STESSED-OUT FAMILIES CAN REJOICE: Supernanny Jo Frost is back and on Lifetime
By BARB OATES

What do you think of The Unicorn?
Question: I had high hopes for The Unicorn, being a huge Walton Goggins fan, but after 3 episodes I was DONE. The supporting characters are so annoying and grating I couldn’t take it. Shut them up! Shelve this so called comedy... with just about all of the new fall shows. —Monica Matt Roush: I won’t rehash my defense in recent columns for the CBS comedy as one of the most charming and emotionally satisfying shows in some time, but I will say that if you’re lucky enough to get actors like Michaela Watkins, Rob Corddry and Omar Miller to play your friends in a supporting ensemble, the last thing you’re going to tell them is to shut up. I get that no show is going to appeal to all people, and in this case, the friends are meant to be aggravating with their hovering and meddling in the life of their widowed friend. But they mean well, and I find them individually to be mostly very funny. Nothing’s more subjective than comedy, so we’ll agree to disagree on this one. As for the overall fall season, I grade it higher than many past seasons. I’m enjoying Prodigal Son on Fox, Evil on CBS, Emergence on ABC, The Unicorn and to a lesser degree mixed-ish, also on ABC. Not a bad start. And counting the days until NBC launches Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (a singing-and-dancing fantasy drama starring Jane Levy, best known from Suburgatory), which looks terrific. The U.K.’s Supernanny Jo Frost is back in action — Wednesdays on Lifetime, beginning Jan. 1 — helping stressedout and overwhelmed parents with their ongoing challenges raising children in this busy digital age. Much has changed since the series ended in 2011, but Frost continues to focus on positive reinforcement and connectivity. The show is now structured to be more documentary in style, where her teachings are outlined and her help extends to the entire family, including couples who need help in their relationships. With a time-tested method involving honest, direct and nurturing support, Frost offers real-life solutions to parents, dispensing advice, techniques and tips to help iron out the chaos in their lives so that their family can evolve. As Frost sees it, “Raising a family has always had its challenges. In an ever-changing world, how we navigate is crucial to how well we stay connected as a family. Truth is, technology is here to stay, so it’s important to embrace the wonder it brings to our lives. However, we must also learn boundaries, too — which is what a lot of families will learn from watching the show — and the importance of why.” She’s had 30 years of experience helping families, and still Frost says her best piece of advice is, “Mean what you say, say what you mean, but don’t say it mean. I believe that a lot of parents would tell you, if they had done this many years ago, they probably would not be facing some of the challenges they have today. Young children take you at your word, literally, so mixed messages only confuse. Keep it simple. Life is complex enough.”

Wait, What? Joe Rwamirama, 48, of Kampala, Uganda, has an unusually practical superpower: “He is known all over the city as the man who can kill mosquitoes with his farts,” local barber James Yoweri told The Sun on Dec. 10. Rwamirama said no one in his home village has ever contracted malaria because his gaseous ejections knock out insects over a 6-mile radius. “He is respectful of people around him and will only fart when there are mosquitoes around,” Yoweri continued. Rwamirama hopes to market his gas and claims that insect repellant companies have been looking into its chemical secrets, but The Sun couldn’t verify those claims.
Undignified Death
When a Shelby, Ohio, police officer responded to a call on Nov. 13 about a sick or rabid raccoon on a residential street, he had a tough decision to make. The raccoon did seem either injured or ill, and according to WJW, the officer decided it needed to be destroyed. However, there is no area animal control department, and police officers don’t have the “training or equipment to capture a potentially rabid animal,” officials said. And the officer was hesitant to use his firearm because of the time of day and because some residents were outside their homes. So he decided to use his vehicle to eliminate the raccoon, running over it several times to finish the job. Un-

Minot (N.D.) Daily News, TRADING POST, December 24, 2019 3
BY TERRY AND KIM KOVEL Belsnickel is part of the Christmas lore of Germany, other German-speaking countries and the Pennsylvania Dutch, a community in the United States since the 1830s. He is a companion of Saint Nicholas, but while Santa carries a bag of gifts for good children, Belsnickel spreads candy for good children then beats the bad children with his whip. Today’s Santa Claus is fat and jolly, and dressed in a red and white outfit. Belsnickel wears a ragged beige coat with a rope belt and a fur collar. Collectors of antique Christmas decorations look for old ornaments and figurines of Belsnickel used in the 19th century. They are often made of papier-mache. He has a long tongue and carries a sack of candy in one hand and a whip in the other. Christmas legends in the 19th century included other dark characters, including Krampus. This antique German Belsnickel with a painted face and white beard is wearing a hooded white robe. It was auctioned at Cordier Auctions in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The unsigned figure sold for $168. Q. I’d like some information about an old brass desk clock that has no markings other than “R.M.S. Celtic.” I’d like to know where it was made and where it came from to be in Louisville, Kentucky. A. We don’t know how it got to Kentucky, but we can tell you where it came from.
The clock is from the ocean liner RMS Celtic, which was launched in Belfast, Ireland, on April 4, 1901. The ship made its maiden voyage three months later, leaving Liverpool, England, on July 26 and arriving in New York City on Sept. 16, carrying almost 3,000 passengers. It became a troop ship for a few months during World War I and then reverted to carrying passengers and cargo. The RMS Celtic survived hitting a mine in 1917, being torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1918, and collisions with other ships in 1925 and 1927, but it ultimately met its demise in 1928 after being shipwrecked on the rocks in Ireland. The ship was scrapped in 1933.
Buddhist and Hindu legends or Thai culture. Many pieces are marked “Siam Sterling.” Your button-style earrings are worth $25. More elaborate pieces with silver filigree are worth about $35 to $60. Bracelet and earrings sets sell from about $60 to $75. Q. After my mother died, we found a Pairpoint lamp in a box in the attic. It looks original except for the cord. There are two stamps under the shade dated July 9, 1901. It has puffy butterflies. The base has a diamond-shaped stamp underneath. Can you tell me what this might be worth? A. Thomas J. Pairpoint founded the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1880. The company joined with nearby glassworks and made glass, lamps and silverplated pieces. Reverse-painted glass shades and molded shades known as “puffies” were made until the 1930s. The company became the Pairpoint Glass Company in 1957. It moved to Sagamore, Massachusetts, in 1970 and now makes luxury glass items. Look closely at the patent date on your lamp. Are you sure it’s not 1907? Pairpoint’s Papillon (butterfly) boudoir lamp marked “patented July 9th - 1907” sells at auction for about $2,000.
This Christmas figure is Belsnickel, a 19thcentury German figure, not our modern Santa Claus. The German character looked for bad children to punish, not good children to reward with gifts. The scary figure is much less popular than Santa and sold for $168.

Q. I want to learn more about earrings I found in my mother’s jewelry box. They are silver round clip-ons with an Asian design on a black background. Are they old? Are they worth anything? A. The country of Siam changed its name to Thailand in 1939. It was renamed Siam in 1946, then changed again to Thailand in 1949. Siam sterling silver jewelry was handmade from the 1930s to the 1970s, and American soldiers in Thailand brought some home as gifts. Most of it is sterling silver with niello, a mixture of copper, silver and lead that looks like black enamel. Pillsbury Bake-Off turns 70! Let’s Cook
Long before there were cooking shows such as Cake Boss, The Great British Bake Off and Barefoot Contessa, bakers from across America took an interest in the Pillsbury Bake-off. 2019 marks 70 years since Pillsbury first introduced this baking contest. Pillsbury introduced what they called the Pillsbury Grand National $100,000 Recipe and Baking Contest, and in time, it became the Pillsbury Bake-Off. Pillsbury started this tradition in 1949 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Pillsbury and as an effort to promote Pillsbury Best Flour. Why not mark an anniversary with a delicious homemade cake? They came up with jingles and clever marketing phrases to promote Pillsbury such as “Nothin’ Loving like Somethin’ from the Oven” and “Pillsbury says it Best!” They wanted more bakers to use their flour so they started promoting it with jingles and a contest. They gave generous cash prizes for the following six categories: breads, cakes, pies, cookies, entrees and desserts. The grand prize the first year was $25,000, and if you included the seal from the Pillsbury Best Flour which was used in the recipe, the prize money could be doubled! Wow! Second, third, and fourth places, along with Best of Class winners, were all awarded healthy cash prizes; thus the reason Pillsbury could market it as a $100,000 contest from the start. Contests and good cash prizes go together like lutefisk and lefse. At one point in the Bake-Off, the grand prize was 1,000,000! Since 2018, the grand prize has been 50,000 plus a kitchen makeover from GE Appliances. It has been estimated you are 18,550 times more likely to win the Bake-Off than the lottery. The math has been done and since its inception in 1949, there have been 53 Bake-Off Contest Winners out of more than 500,000 entries. According to the Huffington Post, your odds of winning the lottery are 1 in 175 million. So set out the mixing bowls, create a recipe, and enter the next Bake-Off Contest instead! The first Bake-Off contestants were selected by a panel of home economists from a vast pool of entries which they narrowed to 100 finalists. These lucky folks were then invited to New York City where the contest was held at the impressive Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The ballroom gave way to 100 cooking ranges with each one being numbered and labeled with contestant’s name. Things almost didn’t heat up at the premier because organizers had failed to realize the electrical current that 100 electric ranges would need! During the middle of the night, Pillsbury had electricians stirring things up by breaking a hole in the wall and dropping a cable down into the subway system to tap into the alternating current cable there. The contest went on the next day like a hot knife passing through butter. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was the guest of honor at the first Bake-Off. She had been invited by Philip W. Pillsbury, then president of Pillsbury Mills, and she paid tribute to the housewives of America and praised them for the daily efforts of fine cooking and baking. Over the years the contest has had many celebrities such as Arthur Godfrey, Art Linkletter, Bob Barker, Willard Scott and Martha Stewart to name a few who have hosted the event. The Bake-Off has been held most often in New York City but Los Angeles, Washington DC, Honolulu, Hollywood, Boston and other major cities have hosted it as well. Once the contest is over, booklets

are printed featuring the winning recipes. I will admit that I do not have a fine collection of cars or coins, but I have almost every Bake-Off booklet! These booklets feature pictures of the winners, hosts and panel of judges. Looking back on some the earlier books is a fine treat. These booklets show contestants in vivid 50’s aprons and hats showcasing their best baking and current fashions as well. Both men and women enter the contest with women being the most common dominator as winners. Only one male has won the Grand-Prize. His name is Kurt Wait of Redwood City, CA, and he won in 1996 with his Macadamia Fudge Torte. It is interesting to note that there has been a Bake-Off winner from every state. Yes, every single state has at least one finalist or grand prize winner. California has claimed the most with 132 winners and next comes Pennsylvania and Texas claims third place. The three states with the fewest number of winners are all tied with one each and they are North Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming. With all the good cooks in North Dakota, I look for this to change! Enter and you may win! Are you a fan of Bundt Cakes? How about Peanut Blossoms? Well, you can thank the Pillsbury BakeOff because both of these classic made their appearance there. In 1966 winner Ella Helfrich used a littleknown baking pan to feature her Tunnel of Fudge Cake recipe and that was the Bundt pan. After the release of the booklets the recipe was so popular that it quickly became Nordic Ware’s number one selling pan! Pillsbury picked up on this trend and developed a line of special cake mixes for Bundt pans. Many folks at funeral lunches continue to thank Helfrich for her inspiration. It was Freda Smith who made the Peanut Blossoms and entered them in the ninth Bake-off in 1957. Her efforts only made it to the finalist stage, and she received no prize money. However in 1999 Peanut Blossoms were one of ten recipes inducted to the Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest Hall of Fame at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Here is a winning recipe from the 1951 booklet. It was entered by Mrs. Vava M Blackburn of Walla Walla, Washington. This cake made from scratch is wonderful, and the fluffy orange frosting is always a hit. I have yet to be the owner of the 1949 booklet!
