very year, the renowned colour institute Pantone selects a trend colour at the beginning of the year. This colour is put in the picture all year long, providing an important source of inspiration for creators of decoration, fashion and so on. So colour code 15-0343 is one to remember this year!

A HOPEFUL COLOUR The new trend colour is always associated with an interesting story: after all, a bit of storytelling is a trend in itself. The fresh green tint evokes nature re-emerging on the first days of spring. But why has Greenery been chosen specifically for this year? “We know we are living in a world with a very tense atmosphere, so this is the colour of hope and closeness to nature”, explains Leatrice Eiseman from Pantone. So now at least you know what you’re doing with all those light green cushion covers and throws.

HERMAN VAN VEEN Our Herman van Veen Arts Center is located in the stately setting of de Paltz Estate in Soestduinen, Utrecht. This social arts centre organises concerts, festivities, exhibitions, seminars and lectures, all on a modest scale that befits its wooded surroundings. The centre’s events focus mainly on creating exhibitions and playing opportunities for young artists. No entrance fees are charged for anything organised by the Arts Center. This is possible because visitors are mainly so-called ‘seat holders’, sponsors, donors and volunteers. When their seats are not occupied, they are made available to an

audience consisting mainly of students, senior citizens and children. Seat holders, volunteers and staff can rent the location for a fee for private events. One of these seat holders is the Belgian firm Passe Partout. They sometimes bring their furniture to us to have it photographed in style. These beautiful pictures are the result. RITUALS A JOURNEY TO THE SOUL

ast year, cosmetics producer Rituals was the ‘best growing’ company of the Netherlands, according to the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship rating. Rituals founder Raymond Cloosterman is proud of his achievement, but he is nowhere near ready yet.

CUP OF TEA According to Cloosterman, the success of Rituals rests on two pillars. The first is the quality of and the experience in the shops. You are always welcomed with a cup of tea and friendly service. And the second is brand awareness. The name is getting increasingly stronger. ‘Our brand has a number of fans who buy more and more with us.’ Cloosterman also thinks that innovation helps the concern. ‘What makes us unique, is really the speed with which we innovate. We introduce about two hundred new products annually.’

Cloosterman is pushing forward with his company which he set up in 2000. Rituals is now active in 26 countries with more than 500 shops and 1,800 shop-inshops. And as far as he is concerned, the growth is not over yet; revealing his growth plans he says: ‘This year, we want to open another two or three shops a week and also three or four shop-in-shop branches’.

ENJOYING THE MOMENT There is an enormous difference between the first little shop and the multinational that the company has now evolved into. ‘We have the zeitgeist on our side. Fifteen years ago we were marching ahead of the troops. Now it is all about mindfulness and everyone is occupied with yoga and enjoying the moment a little bit more!’

WELLNESS DNA ‘The great dream is within ten years to build a beautiful little global brand’, forecasts Cloosterman. For this we must also make Rituals successful in other parts of the world. The wellness DNA is less embedded in Anglo-American culture, that explains the difference in growth. ‘That means a slightly longer haul, but we will get there’, he says with continued confidence.

etween Tongeren and Maastricht, along the old Roman roads, in the municipality of Riemst, lies the only Wine Castle of Belgium. This is not by accident, as the Romans had already vineyards in this area some 2000 years prior.

In 1990 the family van Rennes renewed the centuries old wine culture in the area. Once again is the beautiful wine grape to be seen all around the Wine Castle of Genoels-Elderen. The Wine Castle of Genoels-Elderen is with its 25 hectares of vineyards, the largest wine domain in the country, and welcomes every year some 15000 visitors. Guides will show you around the park, the vineyards, a rose garden, the distillery, the press house and the cellars which date from the 13th to the 20th century. Make your next outing a day in Limburg. Enjoy local specialties in nearby restaurants and visit other tourist locations in the vicinity.

THE VINIFICATION: when optimal maturity occurs a manual harvest is done whereby the eventual unripe or rotten grapes are removed. A slow and gentle pressing of three hours with a double membrane pneumatic press in order to extract only the highest quality juice. Approximately four week fermentation under perfect temperature control and systematic malolactic fermentation. The maturing “sur lies” and “bâtonnage” for 12 months enriches the wine with aromas of its own terrain, fattiness and earthy tastes. Bottled on the property.

THE VINEYARDS: with extreme vigilance and much labour we take care of 22 hectares of pure and healthy vineyards, without the use of pesticides and artificial manure. The green harvest limits the volume but intensifies concentration, maturity and character.

PRESERVATION AND MATURING OF THE WINES: after bottling, the wines are stored at the Castle for a period ranging from 12 to 48 months, in order to avoid fatigue after bottling. Bottles with faulty corks are removed and an optimal harmony is achieved by the fusion of the wine.

big smile on a customers’ face is what we live for at Maona Corner. Delicious coffee, healthy juices or amazing yoghurts is what we make to get it.

Kjell, the owner of this lovely coffee bar at the corner of ‘Van Schoonbekeplein’ and ‘Oude Leeuwenrui’ in the city of Antwerp took over the place of Pieter Loridon, earlier a famous basketball player. Kjell was his first employee and started to work for him 10 years ago. He was inspired by all the healthy food and the possibilities they had with all the simple ingredients and products. The honest and small preparation of juices, sandwiches and yoghurts with fresh fruits are all made behind the bar of the small and lovely place called Maona Corner. Lamarzocco, the Roll’s Royce of the coffee machines, came in in 2015 and since that time the coffee itself became more and more important and took an important place on the menu. With all their love, filled with passion and lots of joy, Kjell and his team prepare the best coffees ever. ntwerp’s Central Station is considered one of the most beautiful stations worldwide. Between 2000 and 2009 the monumental building was completely modernised and expanded to accommodate the high-speed rail line. More platforms were opened on two additional underground levels, an additional entrance with station hall was built in Kievitplein and space was created for shops and restaurants. The unique metal platform roof had previously been restored. In the past Antwerp Central Station was a terminus where trains had to turn around. But since 2007, trains can continue their journey thanks to the railway tunnel between Antwerp Central Station and the north of the city.”

The Antwerp Central Station, also known as Middenstatie (Middle station) or Spoorwegkathedraal (Railroad Cathedral), was first used in 1905. The structure is made up from a steel platform covering and a stone station building in an eclectic style. Recently, the station was completely renovated and in 2007 a tunnel underneath the station and a part of Antwerp was opened, reverting the station’s status as a terminus where are all trains have to turn back. In 2009, the American magazine Newsweek chose the Antwerp Central Station as the fourth most beautiful train station in the world.

“The original station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905 as a replacement for the original terminus of the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp Railway. The stone clad terminus buildings, with a vast dome above the waiting room hall were designed by Louis Delacenserie and the vast (185 metres long and 44 metres high) iron and glass trainshed by Clement van Bogaert. The viaduct into the station is also a notable structure designed by local architect Jan Van Asperen. The station is now widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium, although the extraordinary eclecticism of the influences on Delacenserie’s design had led to a difficulty in assigning it to a particular architectural style. In W. G. Sebald’s Austerlitz an ability to appreciate the full range of the styles that might have influenced Delacensiere is used to demonstrate the brilliance of the fictional architectural historian who is the novel’s

In February 2009, the American newspaper ‘Newsweek’ found that the station deserved a 4th place as world’s most beautiful station.” “In 1835 the first train from Brussels to Antwerp arrived in Antwerp in a wooden station outside the city walls, in Koningin Astridplein. This structure was replaced in 1854 by a new wooden station building near the Antwerp Zoo’s current entrance: East Station. But King Leopold II felt that Antwerp deserved a more prestigious station. In 1895 Bruges-born architect Louis dela Censerie set to work. Ten years later Antwerp’s Central Station was officially inaugurated. The station consists of an elevated railway bed, a covered steel platform hall and a monumental station building for services and ticket hall.

RECEPI ‘Paling ‘t groen’ (Eel in green sauce) INGREDIENTS: 1 kg eel 100 g butter Pepper and salt 2 dl white wine 4 dl fish stock

FOR THE SAUCE: 2 shallots 7 different fresh green herbs (mint, sage, lemon balm etc…) ½ bunch of parsley 100 g butter 150 g flower

TO PREPARE THE EEL: Cut eel into pieces and fry briefly in salt and pepper. Add the white wine and the fish stock. Turn off heat just before it reaches boiling point

TO PREPARE THE SAUCE: Melt the butter and add the flower. Add the cold eel juice and stir, bring to the boil until it is the right thickness. Chop the herbs and shallots and mix the ½ bunch of parsley. Then add the eel to the sauce.
