Introduction to Suvarnabhumi
SUVARNABHUMI THE GOLDEN LAND
Why “Golden”?
So Where Was Suvarnabhumi Why no Bangkok in Suvarnabhumi
?
Really Situated?
W
hen travelers of that time used the term Suvarnabhumi, they did not have a particular country or city in mind, but referred to the whole region, its mainland, peninsula, and islands. Thus, Suvarnabhumi encompasses the whole of Southeast Asia.
S
uvarnabhumi was one of the most fertile regions of the world. Its climate and landscapes gave rise to great bio-diversity, providing the inhabitants with trade goods much desired by traders from abroad.Primeval rainforests which covered much of the land until recently were the source of forest products, vegetable, and animal, that were worth their weight in gold. Fertile soil and plentiful water meant that agricultural production exceeded local demand, providing surpluses that could be exchanged for valuable imports. Certainly, the region produced gold, but other metals like copper, tin, lead, and iron were just as important to traders in those days.
Suvarnabhumi, Land of Gold About 2,000 years ago, Indian, Chinese, and Greco-Roman documents refer to a landmass to the east of India, It was fertile, rich in resources, and there a merchant might make his fortune. These reports attracted travelers to the region which was called, in various languages, Suvarnabhumi, Suvarnadvipa, Jin Lin, Chryse Chersonesos, all of which mean Land of Gold.
Discover Suvarnabhumi
H.R.H. Prince Damrong Rajanupab was the first historian to claim that Suvarnahubhumi was situated in Thailand, in the Chao Phraya Basin with its center at Nakhon Pathom. Similarly, Myanmar proposes Beikthano, Malaysia claims Pengkalan Bujang, Indonesia suggests Taruma, Cambodia has Vyadhapura, and Vietnam argues for Oc Eo. These ancient sites, each now in a differnt country, all show ample evidence of internatinal trade contacts during the Suvarnabhumi Period.
8 Thaioriginals MAGAZINE01.indd 8-9
The Beginning of Suvarnahumi There is massive documentary evidence referring to a Land of Gold in Southeast Asia. The evidence extends through many centuries, going back as far as the time of the Buddha in 6th century B.C.E. We know from reliable records that the Indian Emperor Ashoka (3rd century B.C.E.) dispatched two missionary monks, Sona and Utara, to spread the Buddha’s teaching in Suvarnabhumi. The Ramayana refers to Suvarnadvipa (probably the Peninsula). Buddhist literature, including the Jataka Tales, Milinda Panha, and Maha Nidesa tell of traders who went to Suvarnabhumi to seek their fortune. Even the Geography of Ptolemy mentions Chryse Chersonesos, islands and a mainland rich in gold. The Chinese annals of the Liang Dynasty(6th century C.E.) record that Jin Lin, or Land of Gold, was situated some 2,000 Liwest of Funan. Documentary evidence tells only part of the story. In addition, there is ancient physical evidence that suggests that Suvarnabhumi had been trading with the outside world at least 4,000 years ago. No matter where people lived, they often yearned to discover others whenever opportunities arose.
I
t is not surpurising that Bangkok is not mentioned in the early documents about Suvarnabhuim, because at that time the area we know as Bangkok was below sea-level. About 5,000 years ago, the coastline of the Gulf of Thailand was hundreds of kilometers further north. As the Chao Phraya River deposited silt, the muddy estuary extended further south, becoming dry land about 1,000 years ago and giving rise the coastline that we see today. With this recent evidence, we may suppose that during the Suvarnabhumi Period ports were largely situated at the mouths of rivers along the ancient coastline. Later, some of them silted up and fell into ruin. while others survived and later became great cities further inland, the ruins of which remain today in places like Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi, and Nakhon Pathom.

The way of life
The Beginning of Agriculture in Suvarnabhumi
Glutinous Rice The Earliest Cultivated Rice of Suvarnabhumi Small hunting and gathering communities shifted about in search of sustenance for thousands of years until they gradually realized that seeds could be cultivated and animals raised. Staying in one place could maintain a steady food supply and reduce unnecessary risk. The first evidence of rice cultivation in Suvarnabhumi dates from some 4,000 years ago, most of it discovered in the Northeast of Thailand. The evidence includes grains of rice, sickles, and the bones of water buffalo with stress marks indicating that they were not wild but had been put to the plough. The rice grains were of the glutinous variety.
Cultivated Rice The two species of cultivated rice are Asian Rice (Oryza sativa) and African Rice ZOryza glaberrima). After the people of Suvarnabhumi learned how to cultivate rice, their soccieties began to develop and became more complex.
W
hat else can we learn about early agriculture in Suvarnabhumi? When early man learned to plant, he had to stay with his crop until it was ready to yield. He also had to tend it with water and weeding. Animal husbandry had similar requirements, and both planting and herding demanded the choice of an environment other than the wild. Thus, early man began to give up his wandering ways and settle in more or less permanent communities. Fertile areas, suitable for cultivation, attracted scattered families to gather into larger groups for mutual support and protection. The first village communities were formed, then grew to communities, and finally developed into towns and states. These were the simple beginnings of Suvarnabhumi.
Cavemen and Hunters
The first inhabitants of Suvarnabhumi were nomadic hunters and gatherers whose movements were dictated by the changing seasons and the availability of food. They might settle for a time in the shelter of
10 Thaioriginals MAGAZINE01.indd 10-11
a cave or beside a stream. There they left evidence of their stay in the form of rude stone implements which have been dated between 10,000 and 7,000 years ago. These hunters remained in this state for a long time as there was no molivation for the development of technologies for a more stable existence.
Rice of the Hunters
The early hunters and gatherers of Suvarnabhumi left us evidence of the rice they ate and the tools they used to reap it. The rice found at these ancient sites are always wild, never the cultivated type, indicating that agriculture was as yet unknown. This is where the story of agriculture in Suvarnabhumi begins. The same story happened throughout the world.
Wild Rice
Many different types of wild rice were found in the Suvarnabhumi region. The early people of Suvarnabhumi used to eat this abundant wild rice before they learned how to cultivate rice.
How to Cook Rice in Bamboos: This recipe could be used by people of Suvarnabhumi.
1. Cut the bamboo that has two joints between the segments. 2. Bevel the surface of the bamboo’s first and third segments in order to sit on the stand when cooking. 3. Make a hole in the middle segment. 4. Pour the rice grain in the hole as one third of the middle segment’s size. 5. Lie the bamboo horizontally. Fill up the water until the bamboo is full. 6. It takes 45 minutes until the rice is cooked.

rom the reign of Rama V (Chulalongkorn, r. 1868-1910) onward, the West dominated the culture of the Siamese ruling class intellectually and materially. Ideas of administration, education, and even dress, decorum, and architecture were all modeled on European examples.
The ‘60s in Bangkok In the 1960s, the world entered a colorful era of change. Economies were booming, it was an age of new aspirations, and many found both prosperity and the chance to enjoy it. Thais were introduced to the 1960s culture by members of the US armed forces, whose bases were first officially established here in 1967.

The new popular culture had spread from its old center at Wang Burapha to many points throughout the city like Ratchadamri area where a department store, Pratu Nam, boasted Thailand’s first escalator and later at Siam Square. With the coming of the American forces on R&R (Rest and Recreation), entertainment areas proliferated along. New Phet Buri and
The New Siam in the Shadow of the West Sukhumvit Roads with their souvenir shops, massage parlors, bars, and nightclubs to profit from the huge influx of dollars.
In the reign of King Rama IV (r.1851-68), the expansionist policies of the colonial powers became apparent. Britain was closing in on Siam from the west, having taken india, Sri Lanka, Lower Burma, and parts of the Malay Peninsula. France was making inroads on Vietnam, Cambodia, and Loas. China, which Siam had traditionally looked upon as a paramount power, had been humiliated in the Opium Wars (1839-42). Siam stood alone and vulnerable.
The colonial powers were greedy for wealth and strategic control, but their excuse was that they were bringing “civilization”to”backward and benighted peoples”. Siam was ready for change and capable of meeting the West on equal terms.
The End of the Absolute Monarchy
During the reign of King Rama V, a new class came into being: independent thinkers whose ideas and interests differed markedly from the old ruling elite and from the peasantry. Members of the new class had studied abroad and been impressed by what they had seen there. These people were to be a force for change in the years to come. Member of this new class found employment in the bureaucracy when they returned from abroad. They brought with them their admiration for democratic forms of goverment. They promoted a movement that led to momentous change in 1932 when absolute monarchy gave way to “democracy under a constitutional monarch”. Siam began to reinterpret the concept of Nation, replacing the absolute power of an individual with participatory democracy in which the public shared both power nd responsibility.

angkok is excess in all of its unrestrained glory. Bigger, better, more:the city is insatiable,a monster that feeds on concrete, shopping malls and diesel exhaust. The city demands that you be in the present and in the moment, not necessarily for a religious epiphany, but because the city is selfabsorbed and superficial, blissfully free of wrinkle-inducing selfreflection. Smiles and sa-nook(the thai word for “fun”) are the key passports into Bangkok society. A compliment here , a joke there-the demands of social lubrication in this
megalopolis are more akin to a small village than an anonymous city and a necessity for survival. As Bangkok forcefully kneads out of you all demands for order and predictability, you’ll understand the famous Thai smile. Or appreciate the attempts at enlightenment at the city’s famous temples and doorstep shrines,or simple acts of kindness amend the urban bustle. square meals; when in Bangkok, locals snack throughout the day, packing away at least four meals before sunset. Like a sundial, the sidewalk landscape of food stalls is an approximate indication of the time of day. In the mornings, vendors sell steaming cups of thick filtered coffee sweetened with condensed milk or mini baton-shaped doughnuts dunked in glasses of warm soy milk. By midday the buffet has switched to premade rice and curries, madeto-order rice dishes and fruit snacks. Once the traffic and the heat subside (relatively speaking) , the dining social hour begins, with sleepy lanes being converted into communal dinner tables. Friends gather around plastic tables slurping down shared dishes or bowls of noodles chased with bottles of beer or fruit juices. Perhaps no other dining experience will leave such a lasting impression as an alfresco meal complete with a spice-incluced sweat moustache.

Have you ever noticed that the Siamese have always been fascinated with everything foreign? Siam’s fetishism of the foreign commodity is indeed one of the distinctive characteristics of Thai identity. These days, Thai people often proudly state that we have never missed any trend from abroad whether a European or an American trend, a Korean or a Japanese trend - and it seems that our forebears also took pleasure in keeping up with the latest trends from Cambodia, China, and even Persia. And have you ever noticed that the object of Siam’s fascination come only from the great nations? Our taste for trends from the world’s high civilizations is a reflection of our desire to show the global public that we are also part of this modern world. Siam’s unceasing fascination with the foreign also reflects an internal contradiction of Thai identity- on the one hand, we Thais often value our own culture, but on the other hand, we can be strongly nationalistic, particularly when we encounter nonThais.
Trend Europe
and the fashion in king Chulalongkorn During the late 19th century, the horizons of the Siamese elite extended far beyond the once powerful countries of India or China, Within a few years. the center of civilization had shifted to the West. The world was entering the modern era, and Siam came face to face with the threat of Western colonialism. It was during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) that Siam grew much savvier
in keeping up with international trends. Whereas the Siamese elites of previous reigns were just amateurs at borrowing from the West by the Rama V period, they had become skilled veterans in following the trend “du jour.” Siamese courtiers old not hesitate to adapt their dress in accordance with European fashion. By purchasing luxurious commodities from abroad. Siamese elites
were able to project an image of themselves as being civilized and modern. Victorian blouses madeof intricate lace such as those worn by European ladies became a must-have ltem for ladies of the Siamese court. Reflecting our superb skill at adaptation. the new lacy top was then combined with our traditional bottom. This iconic fashion merger between Western and Siamese couture came to signify Thai identity for later genereations.

Why did the name of our kingdom change from siam to kingdom
Siam Becomes Thailand
The process of “Nation Building” began under King Rama V (r. 1868-1910) and gained momentum under King Rama VI (r.1910-25). Nationalism reached its apex under Field Marshal Pibulsonggram (P.M.1938-44). His National Socialist regime produced a State Edict in 1939, proclaiming that the county was henceforth to be called “Thailand” in accordance with its racial pure “Thai” inhabitants who were genetically superior to other “lesser breeds”. Under this Edict, those who conformed to the ideals of the dictatorship were pronounced “racially pure Thais”.
