“Further Readings” is an ongoing series of concert-style play readings that offers Mint’s First-Priority Club members an opportunity to delve deeper into the work of some of our favorite playwrights. We usually present one “Further Reading” to accompany each of our productions. Past highlights include I Am a Camera by John van Druten, Liliom by Ferenc Molnár, Professor Bernardi by Arthur Schnitzler and The Wild Goose by Teresa Deevy.

Coming next to Further Readings is The Younger Generation by Stanley Houghton, author of Hindle Wakes. Subtitled “A Comedy for Parents” The Younger Generation tells the age-old story of rebellious youth and repressive parents, kept remarkably fresh by Houghton’s plain speaking and light touch--and by the fact that hardly anything at all has changed in the hundred-plus years since this comedy was first written. The delight the play offers is due, not only to the universality of its topic, but also “the author’s fairness and common sense, his general veracity, and not least, his eye for humorous detail.” Houghton is “a writer with a keen sense of humor who uses it freely to make us laugh--and to laugh with all the better conscience because with our laughter goes a comfortable if vague notion that it is not unaccompanied by thought,” as described by the Times, 1912. Occasionally our readings blossom into full productions, which was the case with The Fatal Weakness by George Kelly, and now, Conflict by Miles Malleson, the author of Yours Unfaithfully. Many of you were part of the packed and enthusiastic audience last February when we read this sexy, political comedy. There was a loud clamor that night, all in favor of seeing the play fully staged. And now you will! Turn the page for dates and details...

The play tells the story of an aristocrat’s daughter who experiences a political awakening when two men, a fiery young socialist and a dashing conservative, vie for her allegiance.

HINDLE WAKES PHOTO ALERT! BY STANLEY HOUGHTON

Ciro Gamboni was a long-time friend of the Mint, and a member of our Board of Trustees. Ciro and his wife Gail began attending our performances in 2005 and never missed a play or a reading. Gail continues to attend Mint performances. Ciro was an esteemed attorney specializing in the complex world of international transactions but he always found time for the theater, which he loved. Before the Mint, Ciro was a Board member of the famed Circle Repertory Company, and he even once dabbled his toe in commercial waters as an associate producer of a revue called “Scrambled Feet”. Sadly, Ciro passed away last spring, on April 23rd (Shakespeare’s birthday.) Ciro left the Mint a wonderfully generous bequest of $50,000, for which we are deeply thankful. As an expression of appreciation and gratitude, both for Ciro’s generous gift and for his many years of service and support of the Mint, the Board of Trustees is proud to announce the formation of the Ciro A. and Gail P. Gamboni Legacy Society.
Any planned gift entitles you to join the Legacy Society. If you have provided for the Mint in your estate planning and would like to be listed in future programs, please contact our office: 212.315.9434 or send a confidential email to LegacySociety@minttheater.org.

YOUNGER GENERATION by Stanley Houghton Monday, February 5 at 7:00pm
Happy 2018!
If you had a chance to read the program you will know that Stanley Houghton died tragically young, just one year after making a big splash with Hindle Wakes, at the age of 32. We’re offering a “Further Reading” of another fine play of his on February 5th, “a comedy for parents” called The Younger Generation. This delightful comedy will tickle your fancy, while also adding to your appreciation of Houghton’s gifts. What a loss that he never lived to top himself, and write a follow-up to Hindle Wakes. Wouldn’t you like to know how he saw the world after Fanny’s ideas became more widespread and women actually had the vote!
FIRST PRIORITY CLUB NEWS
from your friends at Mint Theater
Thank you for the wonderfully enthusiastic response to Hindle Wakes. Many of you have told me that this is the best play the Mint has ever done! I do hear that once or twice about every show, which is always lovely, but I think I have heard it many more times about Hindle Wakes.
