first priority club news Dear Friends, The Heiress is a special play for me for a number of reasons, so it is with great pleasure that I invite you to see the play with me on November 5th at the Walter Kerr Theater. We’ve arranged fantastic seats for a small group of Mint friends. Add to that dinner with some very special guests, and this is surely the best way to see the production that the New York Times is calling “one of the more promising entries of the fall season.” One reason the play means so much to me is that it was written by my lovely wife Katie’s grandparents. Mint’s evening at The Heiress will be co-hosted by Katie and her mother, Judy Goetz Sanger. Judy is the only child of Ruth and Augustus Goetz, the esteemed and extraordinary husband and wife team who wrote this terrific play, inspired by the novel Washington Square by Henry James. At dinner before the show, Judy will give us some background about her parents and their very special collaboration and tell us some inside stories about how this wonderful play came into being. One other reason that the play is special to me is a story I’ll share with you on Nov. 5th, about a production I saw of the play in 1988 which helped to chart the course of the Mint Theater. Katie may also share a story about another special family connection we have with this play. We’ll gather for dinner at Angus McIndoe, 258 West 44th Street at 6:00 and then make our way to the Walter Kerr a few block away for an 8:00 curtain. We have a variety of great seats available, including 15 first row seats, another 8 in the second row, plus some great aisle pairs and for those who prefer a little broader perspective, great seats in the front mezzanine. Call us today and take your pick; first come first served. Sincerely,
Jonathan

KATIE ROCHE by teresa deevy January 26th- March 30th “GREAT DEEDS WERE NEVER DONE BY LITTLE HEARTS.” KATIE ROCHE KATIE ROCHE is the story of a fiery young servant girl of uncertain parentage living a quiet life in rural Ireland, while harboring dreams of grandeur. Katie aspires to sainthood but has a devilish temper which may be her undoing.
“Few treatments of volatile youth matched with staid middle-aged in marriage are as engaging and as moving as this…” The Irish Independent, 1975
Originally produced by Ireland’s famous Abbey Theatre in 1936, KATIE ROCHE was hailed as a masterpiece by the Irish Independent, garnering rave reviews for both the playwright and the play: “Imagine a play in which the really eloquent and revealing things are the sentences the players do not say; a play in which words become almost unimportant and situation everything; a play of fantastic irony, of vital convincing characters, of superb craftsmanship. That is KATIE ROCHE.” The Irish Independent.
The response was so strong that KATIE ROCHE went on to be published in an Anthology of
“Famous Plays” from that year (“even though it cannot yet be called famous,” the publisher acknowledged), where it appeared beside Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing. In his review of the Anthology, St. John Ervine (author of JOHN FERGUSON, seen at the Mint in 2006) praised “The last play in the volume is Miss Teresa Deevy’s KATIE ROCHE, and it is, I feel inclined to say, the most remarkable of them.” He went on to say of the playwright, “Miss Deevy may be a genius.” KATIE ROCHE immediately became Teresa Deevy’s most successful play. A U.S. tour was kicked off in New York in 1937 and a London production was presented the following year. The play was revived by the Abbey in 1949, 1975 and 1994—each time to critical acclaim: “Full of wisdom and compassionate warmth,” The Irish Independent gushed in 1975, “A most welcome draught of pure, fresh air in the theater.” This winter, Teresa Deevy’s groundbreaking drama finally returns to New York with performances running from January 26th through March 24th.

The Teresa Deevy Project
TERESA DEEVY RECLAIMED: Volume Two will arrive in 2013! The book will feature all of her short dramatic works and radio plays. In the Spring of 2010, Mint artistic director Jonathan Bank travelled to Ireland to meet with members of the Deevy family and to see Landscape, the Deevy family home where Teresa was born and spent her final years. All of Teresa’s remaining papers were stored there, including complete and incomplete typescripts of both produced and unproduced plays. Every page was scanned and/or copied and brought back to New York. We are currently at work editing these plays for publication. We look forward to sharing them with you in 2013 with the release of Teresa Deevy Reclaimed: Volume Two. The book will feature all of her short dramatic works and radio plays; Holiday House, In The Cellar of My Friend, The King of Spain’s Daughter, Light Falling, and more.
Remember these Deevy Delights... “The Mint Theater is certainly making an elegant case that the Abbey Theater in Dublin missed an opportunity almost 70 years ago when it declined to produce Wife to James Whelan” The New York Times
“One of the most compelling, challenging plays currently on a New York stage.” The Irish Echo
“Wife to James Whelan is exactly the kind of show for which the Mint was created. Here's to Bank and company for unearthing it and allowing Deevy's skillful, idiosyncratic voice to be heard once more.” Backstage
“Jonathan Bank and his company strengthen their case for Deevy as a formidable and too-long-lost voice in Irish theater!” Backstage
“Deevy's dialogue, colloquially simple and straightforward, seems artless at first. But on closer inspection, it turns out to gleam, like rich ore, with glints of subtext's precious metal. Hearingimpaired or not, she listened acutely.” The Village Voice
“Unfailingly perceptive, poetic, and moving.” The New Yorker
“Temporal Powers provides more evidence that Deevy was a writer with a penetrating vision of her characters… It’s an uncompromising vision for any time or place; for a woman writer in the 1930’s, it’s pretty astonishing. The Mint has plans to produce another Deevy play next season; I can’t wait.” Lighting and Sound America
If you would like to show your support for Mint Theater Company's Teresa Deevy Project by making a $500 contribution, we will acknowledge your gift by printing your name on a special page in the front of the book.
