There are many reasons why people take the leap of faith to start their own business. They want to be in control of their own time, are wanting to be decision-makers, are hoping to earn more, and in many cases they are just looking for a complete career change.

When Nikki Chubaty ventured out three years ago to start Nikki’s Housekeeping, some of these factors certainly came into play. What she and her husband and business partner, Jordan, didn’t realize at the time was the potential for how quickly the business could grow.
“After I had my first child and was finished my maternity leave I wasn’t eager to head back to my old job, so I decided to start a residential cleaning business. I started on my own and then as word spread, I was turning down jobs because there just wasn’t enough time in the day,” said Nikki.
It wasn’t long after that the budding entrepreneurs were faced with the exciting prospect of expanding the business by hiring staff so they would be able to take on more projects. The cleaning service originally focused on residential jobs, but they quickly realized that there was potential from the client and employee perspective to move into commercial work as well.
“We just didn’t realize there was such a market, people are working and they are just too busy. We sell something that you just can’t buy — time, and more time. We give that back to people so they can spend their free time doing other things and not having to worry about cleaning their house,” said Jordan.
The expansion of the business meant changing the name to be all-encompassing. Now called Nikki’s Cleaning Services, they offer a wide range of services, not just standard indoor house cleaning. Their services include carpet cleaning, off-site rug cleaning, interior and exterior window cleaning, and exterior pressure washing (e.g. siding, decks, fences). While the business is based in Brandon, they serve a large geographic area including the entire Westman region, as well as parts of the Parkland and Central regions. Currently, further expansion plans include setting up office locations in Dauphin and Portage la Prairie, which means they will also be hiring more employees.
Initially, the couple was running the business out of their home but recently moved into a commercial space in Brandon on Park Avenue East that will include a storefront retail location opening this summer.
“We’re thrilled to have a facility to now work out of. It is better for us, and our employees. It’s allowed us to separate our home-life from our business-life, which is important because of our young family,” said Nikki.
“Another part of the business expansion includes branding our own cleaning products. We want to be a one-stop-shop for everything to do with cleaning. We’ve been working on this for months and we can’t wait to launch. The commercially concentrated products are made in Manitoba and will soon be available for purchase under the Nikki’s Cleaning label,” said Jordan.
The full product line includes a multi-purpose cleaner, degreaser, glass cleaner, as well as sanitizer/disinfectant.
It seems that the decision to start their own business was the right one for the Chubaty family. The future in the world of business looks bright for this young couple as they aren’t afraid to take risks.
