American Diabetes Association Fall Gala The American Diabetes Association is pleased to announce its sixteenth annual gala, “All In for A Cure”. This incredible evening of entertainment will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Performing Arts Center – Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. Honorary Chairmen are Chris and Robert Adler. Chairmen for the event are Deborah Fisher, Meridith Carter and Susan Gonzales. They are planning an evening featuring a Vegas Show, casino, dinner and more. The Performing Arts Center will be awash in the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas! That's right, "VEGAS BABY!" Our favorite conductor Lee Gwozdz and a full symphonic orchestra will take a spin on the musical roulette wheel with hip classics such as Luck Be A Lady, Hey Big Spender, and even GODZILLA EATS VEGAS! The cast of high rollers will include Scott Elliff singing great Sinatra classics. The music, the celebrities, the surprise showgirls and the ADA audience will all be musically honored in this fast paced, jackpot evening of musical hit after hit. Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of serious complications including heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, and a number of life threatening effects. The American Diabetes Association serves the community by providing vital diabetes information, advocacy and services for people with diabetes, their families and health care professionals and through the funding of innovative research. This year the Cure-Care-Commitment award is being awarded to Allen Borden and Driscoll Children’s Hospital. They are being recognized for their commitment to the mission of the ADA in raising awareness of diabetes, its causes, impact, and cure. Allen Borden has volunteered for the American Diabetes Association for nearly twenty years. His leadership and focus on strengthening awareness and education programs in our community has brought attention to the organization’s efforts. Driscoll Children’s Hospital has supported Camp Sandcastle, a day camp for children with type 1 diabetes, by providing medical staff for over ten years. Through the leadership and support of Allen Borden and Driscoll’s Children Hospital, diabetes education and awareness is more evident in this community today. Are you looking your best this school year? Hopefully you attended The "Back to School" edition of the Coastal Bend Fashion Showcase which was held Aug. 14th at the Arboretum from noon - 4 p.m. If you did, then you witnessed the more than 50 high school- and college-age models from across the Coastal Bend area participate in a fabulous fashion runway show. The amateur models strutted their stuff up and down the runway like true professionals. In addition, each and every model looked amazing in the latest designer fashions from Kaymare Boutique and Sashay Boutique. Both boutiques displayed a wide variety of stylish trends that captivated the large audience in attendance. With school now in full swing, "Back to School" is an afterthought but the Fashion Showcase continues to help those in need with proceeds from the event going to the Corpus Christi Literacy Council. The back to school theme made the Corpus Christi Literacy Council the obvious choice to receive a portion of the proceeds. Currently, the Corpus Christi Literacy Council has more than 100 volunteer tutors who serve in more than 80 tutoring sites across Corpus Christi. Volunteers work on a one-to-one basis with students at neutral locations convenient to both the tutor and student with the goal of increasing literacy and improving education. Furthermore, besides the tremendous runway show, there were EXCLUSIVE layaway discounts from Kaymare & Sashay that were available during the show. Many people took advantage of those discounts and came away with great deals on apparel and accessories. Adding to the event was music performed by David Kearney, who was a standout at the Corpus Christi Idol competition held at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. He is one of the area’s most talented newcomers to the music scene. He puts his own unique spin on songs from his favorite
artists, which ranges widely from Adele and Celine Dion to Steven Tyler. Tickets were only $10 presale or $15 at the door with a portion of the proceeds going to a terrific cause. Hair and make-up styling were featured from Salon Palomo, the official salon for TheCrushGirls.com. Salon Palomo did an incredible job. All the models looked like they had just popped out of Vogue magazine, their hair and make-up gave the fashion showcase a true sense of glamour.
