Our goal is to become one with the community and cover stories that may be overlooked by other media outlets. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. On to Real Estate.... As 2010 came to an end, I couldn’t help but to ask myself, "What's in store for 2011?” I have been in real estate for over eleven years and I have never seen so many changes taking place virtually overnight. Most of these changes pertained to financing. The fact of the matter is, whatever happens in the financing world directly affects our clientele. And while some of the changes may not have been entirely welcomed, they are here to stay. So rather then fight the inevitable, Mirabal Montalvo has decided to embrace the change and do everything we can to use those changes to benefit our clients. We have partnered with some great lenders who keep us versed weekly on any changes in the mortgage market. There are many options out there whether you are a first time home buyer or a self employed professional; there are now products available to fit every circumstance. Coastal Bend Fashion Showcase
story by April Moore photography by Tony Martinez
“Fifteen minutes until show time,” yelled Andrea Dupper, back stage manager for Coastal Bend Fashion Showcase runway shows, as half – naked models ran around with hairdressers and stylists chasing them to fix any imperfections before they walked the stage. “The idea behind the Showcase was because of being around the Crush Girls so much and hearing their complaints about ‘no places to shop’ in Corpus,” said Tony Martinez, marketing director of TheCrushGirls.com. Of course, when we began working with several boutiques in the area, the girls would most often say, ‘I didn’t even know this was here!’ So, the idea came about to provide a showcase to promote the entire range of fashion options in the area, and not the more typical fashion shows for just one or two boutiques, said Martinez. “The biggest thing we have been lacking here in Corpus is a fashion scene, which people have been saying for years,” said Jennifer Larson, runway model for PART Apparel, “This opportunity is huge for these businesses because it allows people to be aware.” On Sunday Jan. 30, the First Annual Coastal Bend Fashion Showcase took place at the American Bank Center in the Henry Garret Ballroom, which was sponsored by TheCrushGirls.com, Grande Communications and 97.5 KFTX Real Country. Diana Castillo hosted the show with music by Curtis Rock and lighting by Dr. Rockstar. Hair and makeup were provided by Salon Palomo, Salon Deluna, Tease Salon, Yvonne Vaiz and Megan Martinez. “The show was exactly, if not well over what I expected,” said Corey Risper, owner of Risper’s Signature. “I’ve
had a lot of feedback about my fashions and that leads me to believe that this event will allow recognition of my store.” The showcase included fashion shows from eight local boutiques; Kaymare, Corey Risper, GiGi’s Intimate Apparel, Sashay Boutique, PART: Peacethroughart Apparel, Cosa Bella, Frank’s Extreme Wear and Uptown Girl Fashion Boutique. “I hope everyone likes the fashions put together,” said Desi De La Paz, owner of Sashay Boutique, “I try to keep everything at a moderate price range so Corpus can afford it and look just as good as the girls in L.A.” There were over 600 guests that attended the showcase, with two types of admissions: V.I.P. and general. The V.I.P. ticket holders were able to collect two free alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages and visit the chocolate fountain that contained many items for dipping. The general admissions just included the runway fashion show and exploration of over 30 vendors, which included the eight boutiques. “I believe this is a great opportunity for the youth to show what they have to offer fashion wise,” said Dustin Van Dam, an event guess. “Corpus wasn’t really happening in the fashion scene but now I can see it really taking off and I can’t wait for the next show.”The next Showcase will be held on Oct. 16 in partnership with the Caller Times Best of the Best Showcase at American Bank Center. The boutiques and vendors for this upcoming showcase will be announced at a later date. “The demand for fashion is clearly here in our area, and we look forward to helping stimulate and develop the fashion scene in our area,” said Martinez.

Next time you are contemplating a night out and about ask yourself, “Do I live in a beautiful home? Yes. Did I spend a ridiculous amount of money on my TV and surround sound? Yes.” And finally, and perhaps most importantly you have to ask yourself, “Do I really want to look for parking?” A resounding NO. After all, you spend your life’s work on a beautiful home and then fill that home with all kinds of beautiful stuff and yet, you are so ready to head out the first chance you get. It is hard to understand but we all do it. We head downtown and leave Club de mi casa, hoping all will be as you left it when

you finally make it back home. Do not take this the wrong way, we all need to take off for the city lights now and then and into the glitz and glamor that Aria and other clubs provide, but if you really sit and think about it, so much fun can be had right at home, especially if you actually like your house and the stuff in it. Let’s re-examine our house for a minute. That kitchen and dining room, if clean and that is a big IF at my home, sort of resembles a four star restaurant. You have to use your imagination and a little creativity and with a little time and effort, you are ready to entertain with the best of them. No longer is the good china and silverware laying dormant, collecting dust. Show off those plates and forks your crazy great-aunt from your mother’s side gave you for your wedding. Pull out the crystal glasses and put the Cristol on ice. Call up your friends and tell them there is free food and booze at this ultra exclusive new bistro. 12

Then give them your address and see the smiles on their face when they arrive. So far the easy part, now on to what some may seem as a daunting task, cooking something good that others will want to eat. I recommend sticking to what you know. Now is not the time to try that new recipe. Cooking for others can be a chore so do not hesitate to ask for help. If you plan in advance, it all comes together...maybe not perfect...but always just right. And if all else fails, put that iPhone to good use and order some sushi from SushiBar. After dinner, escort your guests to the media room for a private viewing of the latest Hollywood blockbuster. Show off that massive 60’’ LED that took four grown men to mount on your wall and set the Dolby surround sound to high. A movie can sometimes make people feeling a little lazy or tired so I recommend there be several intermissions during the show. Each intermission can be spent engag-

ing in a fun activity that gets everyone laughing once again. One idea is to set up karoake and have a different set of people sing during each intermission. Or play a quick game of charades. Or truth or dare, or whatever, it’s your party, have at it. Once the movie and games are done and over with, escort your guests to the V.I.P. lounge. Be sure to set the mood with music and the right amount of lighting. Trust me, after a few cocktails your homestyled V.I.P. lounge will resemble most of what Corpus has to offer, minus the cost and chaos. Your home cooking may not be as exquisite and succulent as say SushiBar and your home may not be as posh and trendy as Aria, but a lot of fun can be had at home, hopefully a beautiful home.

Aria & Sushi Bar story by Jamin Aleman photography by Bill Olive
Located at the corner of Lawrence and Chaparral, Aria delivers Corpus Christi’s most upscale nightlife atmosphere
Since October of 2008 Aria has revolutionized nightlife in Downtown Corpus Christi. Located at 326 N. Chaparral, Aria is a diverse multi-level entertainment venue that offers something for everyone. The facility is luxuriously appointed with jaw-dropping design features such as glass tile and custom made furniture, in a venue that offers diverse party space. The sound of Aria was custom designed by a team of award-winning DMX sound engineers and rivals any in South Texas. Entertainment by the best local and guest DJs is offered every weekend. Aria also doubles as an event venue for people seeking a unique and different atmosphere for wedding receptions, holiday parties, birthday parties, or whatever your event needs may be. Aria features sleek white booths and bar stools surrounding a glittering black marble-topped bar, tropical plants, a massive video wall, and a VIP M Magazine • Spring 2011 21
area which doubles as a stage for live performances. Make your way up the stairs and find a mezzanine party space that offers a birds-eye view of the main room bar and dance floor, perfect for scoping out the crowd. Bottle service is available upon request throughout the entire venue. Though Aria brings to South Texas the sophistication of a "big city" venue, they cater to everyone and are in tune with the relaxed environment that is the Corpus Christi Coastal Lifestyle. In fact, right now the rooftop deck, with views of the marina and downtown, is under construction and slated to open in the summer on 2011. Visit Aria and you will see people dressed in suits, jeans, and shorts - everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a night out! Aria Sky Terrace and Lounge has changed Chaparral Street for the better. The success of Aria has made way for other businesses to thrive. Which leads us to Hybridspace, which houses Sushibar and Stereo Musicbar. What better way to start the night than with sushi, specialty cocktails, and the fresh tunes of Sushibar/Musicbar. Sushi at the Sushibar, located directly next to Aria on Lawrence Street, is widely known as the best sushi and 22

Asian tapas in town. Their innovative rolls and small plate recipes have garnered excellent reviews from the reputable magazine Texas Monthly, and from local Corpus Christians. Sushibar has a cult-like following that grows bigger every month. At Stereo Musicbar, within the Hybridspace, you can hear world-class DJs, see unique art and international toys, mingle with a mixed crowd, and eat like royalty. The setting at Sushibar is worlds away from the usual restaurant design seen in the community. The design concept features contemporary decor, a red and white color palate, and an over all minimalistic look that is rarely seen in Corpus Christi. It is truly a destination for those who desire more than just food when dining. Aria alone is amazing, but add Sushibar to the mix and you have yourself a recipe of tantalizing, adult-oriented enjoyment that is fit for the celebrity in all of us.

Ready Or Not... Here We Cure by April Moore photography by Bill Olive
“I could hear a woman’s heels as they got closer and closer to the room I sat in across the hall from where Jacqueline “Jackie” Canales-Black’s CAT scan (Computerized Axial Topography) was taking place. I wasn’t ready for the news I was about to receive,” said Barbara Canales, Jackie’s mother and Founder of the Ready or Not Foundation. “Dr. Lynea Canales, my sister-in-law, told me ‘Jackie has a brain tumor.’ I was so caught off guard because the check-up was just done as a precaution.” One day in January of 2006, Jackie was playing hide-andseek at her school’s playground when she bumped her head on an oak tree. The trip to the pediatrician and a CAT scan revealed that a large tumor, the size of an orange, was hiding in the back of Jackie’s brain. At 6, Jackie was diagnosed with a high-grade anaplastic astrocytoma. Since Jackie was completely asymptomatic, without the oak tree injury and the precautionary CAT scan there would not have been a way for this early diagnosis to occur. This event was an inspiration to the creation of the Ready or Not Foundation. “Initially when you go into a doctor’s office and they tell you that your daughter has a brain tumor, you don’t just go ‘Oh! I’m going to form a cancer foundation and we’re going to get rid of this,’” said Canales. “That’s not how it happened. I thought we were going to lose Jackie. They told me we were going to lose her, so our main goal at that time was for Jackie to survive.” At her young age, Jackie did not fully understand what was wrong with her. However, the doctors showed and explained
the situation to Canales because they had a strong belief in being honest with children and telling them exactly what is happening to their bodies. In addition to the doctors, specialists also spoke with Jackie. They told let her she had “bad cells” in her head that needed to be taken out she would become very sick. They also told her that unfortunately the medicine she had to take would make her feel ill and her hair would fall out. “The doctors were very good at explaining each process to Jackie and letting her know if something would hurt, when there would be an effect from the process such as, feeling really tired or short term memory loss,” said Canales. “They were very honest and that was the best advice, because if you lose a child’s trust as a parent, you can never get it back.” After diagnosis, Jackie was being treated at the Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Soon after, Jackie was moved to the Texas Children’s Hospital (THC) and Texas Children’s Cancer Center (TCCC) in Houston. For three years, Jackie went through two major brain surgeries. The first consisted of making the tumor smaller and the second was an effort to remove as much of the cancer as possible. She then had to go through radiation therapy for six weeks and was subjected to proton radiation therapy at the Proton Treatment Center at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. This treatment consisted of taking two pills and being placed in a radiation chamber. Jackie has since completed a year of chemotherapy and is now in remission at 11. M Magazine • Spring 2011 27

“It’s kind of funny, because before her diagnosis, Jackie was a big cry baby. Everyone knew if Jackie started crying, she wouldn’t stop for an hour. After her first surgery, everything changed,” said Canales. “I don’t remember once, through the terrible procedures, see her kicking, yelling or crying. Which she had every right to do these things, but she didn’t, because she knew this is what she had to do to survive.” After walking Jackie into the radiation chamber for the thirtythird time and having to see her daughter strapped to a table and fully masked, Canales decided she was ready to do something about pediatric brain cancer. “I am very fearful because if the cancer returns Jackie will not be eligible for brain radiation treatment because she had the maximum radiation to the brain allowed,” said Canales. “I kept asking, ‘If this is the only medication available in the market, how are we going to stop it?’ So, I decided to do something about it.” Canales, with the help of others, created the Ready or Not Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to the funding of specific pediatric brain cancer research at TCCC for better treatments and a cure. The foundation raises money for research through donations, store purchases and participation at the foundations website and by specific fundraising efforts. The program has raised over $1.5 million and is well known for some meaningful results for children with different types of brain tumors. Though, there has not been a treatment found for Jackie’s particular type of brain cancer, Canales is still hopeful and happy about the results. “When I first started the foundation I really didn’t think I would receive the recognition or achievements that we have today,” said Canales. “One hundred percent of our money goes to research and I’m happy about that because in the end research is all we have. It’s one thing to raise money for a good cause, but another thing to raise money and get results.” Today, after almost two years of treatment, Jackie attends Incarnate Ward Academy Middle School and is cancer free, though she still has some side effects from the treatments. Jackie cannot feel hot or cold temperatures on the right side of her body, causing her to sometimes burn herself. On the left side she is weak and has a slight limp. Jackie does not have peripheral vision, has sensitivity to light and loud noises and short-term memory loss. Simple tasks such as tying her shoes or buttoning a sweater are a challenge for Jackie. All of these side effects are hard on Jackie and she is very aware today of what cancer is and that she is lucky to be alive. "We have to constantly repeat things to Jackie because she forgets repeatedly. I am constantly at her school because inevitably she doesn't have the ability to remember where things are," said Canales. "These are all small things and I'm happy to have them all, rather than cancer or a tumor regrowth. She is very strong-minded and is very aware if peo-
ple are making allowances for her and she won't let it happen. They are all disabilities but she does not want to be different." Canales said she has found strength in her daughter Jackie, the doctors, surgeons and the researchers. She urges other to help make a difference in pediatric brain cancers. Anyone interested in making a donation or who would like more information about how to make a difference should visit www.readyornotfoundation.org. "These traumas stay with you for the rest of your life and you can never really get away," said Canales. "I mean you move on and I'm happy that Jackie is doing so well today, but you just don't ever forget."
Father Angel Montana
photography & story by Bill Olive
With elements of its history dating back to 1932 and the Sacred Heart Parish, Saint Joseph Catholic Church was built and dedicated July 4th, 1950 as a memorial to the fallen heroes of World War II. Moving now into its 61st year, the congregation has warmly received its current pastor Father Angel Montana who was appointed in March of 2010, and is forging ahead with much needed renovations. Father Angel Montana, who is originally from Guadalajara, and most recently from his assignment in Freer, Tx, has already made significant strides in the repairs of the church. Father Angel Montana invites you to attend his weekly services at Saint Joseph’s Church.

Through his leadership the church has responded vigorously to requests on installation of new carpeting and upholstery in key areas, and new stained glass windows throughout the church. According to the folks over at McInturff’s Glasshaus, who have helped the church with this effort, church member and usher Angie Herrera bought four stained glass windows, three for her and family members, and one which she donated in Rev Joe Lawless and Rev Angel Montana’s name. As of this writing, all repairs of the church within reach of its members have been or are in the process of being completed. Reverend Montana and the congregation now face the daunting task of significant roof repairs to the main congregation hall and steeple, as well as resurfacing the parking lot. Roof repairs are in urgent need as damage to the ceiling and walls exacerbate the problem. The closeness of the congregation is evident in their activity, and boy do they have a full schedule! On May 2nd they celebrated Father Joe Lawless birthday, June 9th Bishop Michael Mulvey will arrive for confirmation, June 19th is the 40th anniversary of the preschool, and the churches 61st anniversary is being held on July 17th. The anniversary celebrations being held at the church on July 17th will feature a variety of fund raising activities including food, raffle prizes and bingo. The church’s updated memory book will also be available. Join them as they celebrate, as a fan of Lenten fish fry Friday’s I can tell you it will be a good time, and a great cause.

Case y Lain photography & story by Bill Olive
With a resume way too long to list here, this native is one of CC’s most prolific figures in the entertainment business. Dating back to ’97 with stints at the Executive Surf Club (ESC), and Concrete Street he now focuses on his current managing partner position at House of Rock, and his own CLP (Casey Lain Presents). Of the many incredible experiences he has had over the years, booking a 15 year old Miranda Lambert for the ESC as an opening act ranks right up there with hosting Clutch, Social Distortion and Willie Nelson. Some of Casey’s upcoming CLP events include The Texas Tornados, Asleep at the Wheel, Tonic, Green River Ordinance and Ziegfest at Whataburger Field. House of Rock, which hosts live shows as well as the annual Zombie Prom, will be celebrating it’s sixth year anniversary on July 28th. As busy as he is, Casey is one of the most congenial people I have met in Corpus. You should take the time to swing by his place at 511 Starr Street and say hello. www.texashouseofrock.com

photography & story by Bill Olive
After joining the CC art scene in 1998 and working to establish a non-profit art space, Michelle opened the doors to K Space Contemporary in 2007. As the director of K Space Contemporary she coordinates many art shows, lectures and popular events like the annual Wig Out fund raiser, as well as involvement in the monthly First Friday Art Walk and the hugely popular downtown Dia De Los Muertos Street Festival that happens October 28th. Somehow she also finds the time to be an artist herself. A dedicated lover of fun, seeing the creative process of artists like Trenton Doyle Hancock, or working the Enmascarados exhibition that included a live Lucha Libre match in the street are some of her personal favorites. Upcoming events include “Latex Suites and Gardens” by Candé Aguilar (May-June). July 1 will open with “Exquisite Corpus”, a Surrealism show based on spontaneous creativity by local artists. Visitors will be encouraged to join in and add to the exhibit throughout its run. http://kspacecontemporary.org/ | http://michellesmythe.com 32

Saigon Cafe
photography & story by Bill Olive
This modest Vietnamese eatery is quietly taking the Corpus community by storm as visitors and locals have taken it upon themselves to support its cuisine. “I am so lucky to have the customers that I do.” says Trang Nguyen who opened the café 2 years ago, returning to Corpus to be closer with her family. Indeed this is true. With a positive online review presence, listings on urban spoon and other social network media, this little restaurants’ following is steadily growing. “My customers did all of that! I started getting these little stickers in the mail, and customers telling me they found me on Urban Spoon, it’s really been amazing and I love them all so much!” says Trang. Their enthusiasm is warranted, as I can say the food does not disappoint. I have loved Vietnamese food ever since the first time I tried it, and the Banh Mí here is the best I have ever had. Most Vietnamese places view this sandwich as a super quick lunch item skimping on the ingredients to allow it to be a very cheap option for hurried workers, but at Saigon Café this is not so. The care and quality of this sandwich is evident the second you lay eyes on it, while the price is still in range and easily one of the best values on the menu. The #5 is a favorite in the banh mí offerings, consisting of char-grilled pork on a French roll under pickled carrot, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeno and butter. I had been accustomed to ordering this sandwich from other places with extra meat, and while that is always a good option it is less necessary here, though you may want to try it. Hitting their marks on appetizers, sandwiches and Vietnamese coffee the menu has over 50 items with a good selection of vegetarian offerings. The spring rolls are a must with any meal, and the pork pot stickers are highly touted. Saigon Café also enjoys a loyal following for its reasonably priced Bubble Tea and Sinkers. The thing I love about the French influenced Vietnamese cuisine is the variety of flavors that can be served simultaneously and still go together. This design allows the possibility of a unique dining experience every time you eat, or if you have a favorite you can stick with that. In short it is a taste adventure, being very popular to order dishes family style for sharing. Trang’s Phö, Bún and Cóm all stand very well in their own right, but eating them all is the best way to enjoy Vietnamese. Of these dishes, popular favorites include the #9 phö (brisket, eye round steak and meatball soup), the #18 bún (char-grilled sliced pork and egg roll on noodle) and the #24 beef korean short ribs on rice. The portions are large and easily make for a social meal. Modest prices and good food temper the scant ambience in this locale opened Monday through Saturday 10am-8pm in a strip center on Saratoga Boulevard.
