Liberal Membership controversy reflects political passion: Campbell Premier Gordon Campbell says controversy about questionable party memberships is inevitable in the enthusiasm over the B.C. Liberal leadership race, but that he is confident the party will make sure valid members choose his successor. Mr. Campbell, elected Liberal leader 17 years ago, told reporters after a farewell speech to the Richmond Chamber of Commerce that the membership disputes reflect the “energy and passion” in the race, and that membership questions are inevitable in such contests. “You know the party will go through this time and again, and you have to count on the party to make sure things are done properly and fairly,” he said in a rare comment on the leadership race. The party announced on Tuesday that at least 50,000 new members have

joined since the leadership race began, but also acknowledged irregularities, such as 40 names from one address in Kelowna. Media reports linked the 40 names to the campaign of former health minister Kevin Falcon. Party spokesperson Lilian Kim said she could not confirm that, adding that the situation has been flagged and is under review. Mr. Falcon faced other woes. His team conceded on Tuesday that a supporter had signed up several members of the Kamloops Blazers Hockey Team without their knowledge. That admission came as Mr. Falcon’s campaign accused the campaign of Christy Clark, the former deputy premier who has been leading public-opinion polls as the favoured choice of the public and party, of

Omar Suleiman, the Egyptian vice-president, warned on Tuesday that his government "can't put up with continued protests" for a long time, as tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters rallied in Cairo's Tahrir Square for the sixteenth day in a row. In a sharply worded statement reflecting the regime's impatience and frustration with the mass demonstrations, the newly appointed Suleiman said the crisis must be ended as soon as possible. Increasingly the public face of the embattled government, Suleiman said there will be "no ending of the regime" and no immediate departure for President Hosni Mubarak, according to the state news agency MENA, reporting on a meeting between the vice-president and independent newspapers. The immediate departure of Mubarak is a key demand for the pro-democracy demonstrators. Mubarak's pledge to not seek another term later this year didn't tame the angry protests. Meanwhile, the UN secretarygeneral, Ban Ki-moon added his voice to host of countries calling for "an orderly transition" in Egypt. Speaking at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Moon said Egyptian government must heed the call from its people for greater reform immediately. Suleiman reportedly told the editors of the newspapers that the regime wants dialogue to resolve protesters'

US threatens to cut Pakistan aid over shooting US lawmakers threatened to cut aid to Pakistan unless it freed an American detained in a shadowy murder case, as Washington intensified pressure on its uneasy war partner. The United States has already warned that high-level dia-

logue would be at risk unless Pakistan releases US diplomatic official Raymond Davis, who said he was acting in selfdefense when he shot dead two men in Lahore last month. Three members of the House of Representatives drove home the point on a visit to Pakistan, telling Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani starkly that the US Congress was working on its budget and looking for areas to cut. Asked if aid would be at risk if Davis stayed behind bars, Representative Buck McKeon, who heads the House Armed Services Committee, said: "It very well could be." Davis was arrested on January 27 after shooting the two Pakistanis, saying he feared they would rob him. A third Pakistani was run over and killed by a US consulate vehicle that had come to assist Davis, according to police. The incident has set off protests in Pakistan, where anti-US sentiment already runs high. Shumaila Faheem, the wife of one of the two men who was gunned down, committed suicide on Sunday by taking poison pills.

Many observers have questioned whether Davis was an ordinary diplomat. Pakistani police said he traveled around with loaded weapons and a GPS navigation system. Nawaz was not surprised by US officials' adamance on freeing the American, saying: "There are so many layers to this story, on who he was and what he was doing, so clearly they don't want him out of their sight." Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declined to meet Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi at a weekend conference in Munich, in a show of displeasure over the case, foreign diplomats in Washington said. US officials have told Pakistan that the Davis case "has to be resolved before we can move to a higher level of discussion," one diplomat told AFP on condition of anonymity. Officials stressed that the United States has not suspended contact with Pakistan, a key partner in the US war effort in Afghanistan and international campaign against extremism. Clinton still met in Munich with General Ashfaq Kayani, the head of Pakistan's powerful army, and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari held talks on Monday with the US ambassador, Cameron Munter. President Barack Obama's administration has put a focus on combating antiAmericanism and reducing the allure of extremists in Pakistan. Congress in 2009 approved a five-year, $7.5-billion aid package meant to build schools, infrastructure and democratic institutions as Pakistan ended a decade of military rule. In October, the Obama administration proposed another $2 billion in assistance for Pakistan's military, often seen as the key power center in the country. Nawaz, the analyst, said the administration would need "powerful gestures," including compensation for the families of the shooting victims, to help rebuild public sentiment in Pakistan. But Nawaz said Pakistan's leaders also had themselves to blame for letting the case drag on, saying it had become a "political kickball" between the central government in Islamabad and the Punjab provincial authorities. Pakistan cabinet quits for revamp amid economic crisis Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has been under pressure for some time to downsize his cabinet Pakistan's cabinet has

quit as part of plans to reduce the number of ministers by more than a third and cut government spending amid an economic crisis. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani paid tribute to his cabinet colleagues as he announced the move live on television. He is to appoint a smaller cabinet to meet political opponents' demands. After devastating floods last summer, Pakistan is under pressure to usher in economic reforms and

meet IMF targets agreed in a 2008 bail-out package. Trimming the cabinet was one of a series of demands made last month by the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) party of Nawaz Sharif. They gave the prime minister 45 days to implement the reforms or risk having the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) kicked out of government in Punjab province, a PML-N stronghold. Ministers submitted their resignations on Wednesday in a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Gilani. In a live TV statement later, Mr Gilani praised the cabinet, saying it had surmounted a number of economic, political and security challenges in nearly three years of its existence. The proposal is to cut the number of ministers and deputy ministers from 60 to less than 40. Under the constitution, a government is supposed to have no more than 49 ministers and five special advisers. Including special advisers, the total number of officials who quit on Wednesday was 80.A government spokesman said the prime minister would announce a new cabinet within days, after consulting President Ali Asif Zardari, who leads the PPP. The BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says it is likely to be a popular move. But he says it exposes the weakness of the current administration, which has a slender majority in parliament. Source:BBC

Dutch lawmaker back in court for hate speech case Lawyers for Dutch anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders said Monday that if their client’s hate-speech case is not dismissed they want a retrial with new defense witnesses including the country’s most notorious convicted terrorist. Wilders faces charges of inciting hatred against Muslims after he compared Islam to fascism and called for a ban on the Qur’an. He is one of the most prominent of the antiIslam populists gaining influence in Europe, and his case has been seen as a major test of the legitimacy of their ideas. It pits his right to free speech against the right of Muslim immigrants to freedom from insult and discrimination allegedly caused by Wilders’ remarks. A new panel of judges was hearing the long-pending case against Wilders after the previous tribunal stepped down last October to avoid the appearance of bias after an appellate judge inolved in the case was accused of having a conversation with a witness before the trial started. The new panel must decide whether to dismiss the charges, change the venue from the Amsterdam District Court or begin all over again. If that happens, Wilders’ lawyer Bram Moszkowicz said Wilders wants to call Mohammed Bouyeri, the Muslim radical who is serving a life sentence for the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh.

Following last year’s elections Wilders is now propping up a minority conservative Cabinet. His platform demands a freeze of immigration from Muslim countries and forcing Muslim immigrants to adopt Dutch cultural values. Moszkowicz said his client “believes without reservation that Islam is a totalitarian ideology,” but that if he is to be tried for expressing that opinion he must be allowed to cite the experts and evidence that led him to his conclusions. The legal process so far has proved to be a debacle. Prosecutors at first declined to press charges in response to dozens of complaints from Muslims, saying Wilders’ remarks were part of a legitimate political debate. But an appeals court ordered the prosecutors to bring the case to trial. Prosecutors did, but after presenting their case they told trial judges the evidence was too weak for a conviction and called for acquittal on all counts. Before the trial judges could rule, they were themselves dismissed. Allegations emerged that one of the appeals judges who had ordered for the case to trial had attended a dinner party with a witness, leaving an impression of possible bias. When trial judges declined to have the appeals judge interrogated in court, a review panel ordered an entirely new set of judges to take over the case. Prosecutor Birgit

van Roessel told the new judges Monday she did not think the case should be dismissed — in essence asking for a clear public ruling on whether remarks such as Wilders’ are permissible. The prosecution said it would object to some of the proposed defense witnesses. Co-prosecutor Paul Velleman said the court already has heard enough from three Islam experts, who agreed about the general contents of the Qur’an. Velleman said trying to define the nature of a religion is beyond the bounds of the case Source: Arab News

Chechen claims Russia bomb attack Doku Umarov, the Chechen separatist leader, has claimed responsibility for last month's bombing at Moscow's main airport that killed 36 people, after an earlier warning to make 2011 a year of "blood and tears". "This operation was carried out on my order," he said in a video posted on Monday on the Kavkaz Centre website, referring to the January 24 suicide attack at Domodedovo airport. Umarov, 46, described the attack as a "special operation" directed against the Russian people and Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister. He said there would be further attacks in pursuit of an independent Muslim state in Russia’s Caucasus region, an area embracing Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia and other nearby territories. He said it was also to avenge Russian "crimes" in the region and underlined that the blast was purposely staged at the international arrivals hall as the aim was to kill foreigners. Umarov, one of Russia's most wanted men, and the self-proclaimed Emir of the "Caucasus Emirate", appeared in the video, reportedly made on the day of the attack, wearing combat fatigues. Umarov, who has promised Russians that "the war will come to your streets", also claimed to have ordered the suicide bombing that killed more than 40 people in the Moscow subway in March, and the bombing of a luxury train, the Nevsky Express, which killed 28 in November 2009. Rights activists have long criticised tactics in raids against separatists in the North Caucasus - known by the authorities as special operations - for being overly brutal and targeting civilians as well as suspects. The Kremlin has repeatedly said giving up the Caucasus and negotiating with socalled "terrorists" was not an option. Tuesday's statement came as a policeman was shot dead in Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, a region within the North Caucasus. Attacks on officials and police are a daily occurrence in the North Caucasus and after a lull of several years, suicide attacks returned to Moscow in March last year when two female suicide bombers from the region killed 40 and wounded dozens on the underground during morning rush hour. After the March attacks Umarov said they were revenge for the deaths of innocent civilians in a Russian special operation. In a similar video at the time, Umarov said the bombings would go on as long as the "crimes committed by the gangs under Putin continued". The Kremlin fought two wars against separatist rebels in Chechnya in the 1990s but the uprising has now spread to neighbouring regions such as Ingushetia and Dagestan. Source: Al-Jazeera

Bush cancels visit to Geneva George Bush, the former US president, has cancelled a planned visit to Switzerland next week. While human rights groups have said the cancellation was due to the risk of legal action against him for alleged torture, organisers said they did not want to risk violence during protests by left-wing groups. David Sherzer, Bush's spokesman, said the former president was informed on Friday by the United Israel Appeal that his February 12 dinner speech in Geneva has been called off. Human rights groups said they had intended to submit a 2,500-page case against Bush in the Swiss city on Monday for alleged mistreatment of suspected militants at Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. naval base in Cuba where captives from Afghanistan, Iraq and other fronts in the so-called War on Terror were interned. Pressure has been building on the Swiss government to arrest him and open a criminal investigation if he enters the Alpine country. Criminal complaints against Bush alleging torture have been lodged in Geneva, court officials say. Keren Hayesod, the organiser, announced on Saturday that they were cancelling Bush's participation on security grounds - not because of the criminal complaints. Saturday's edition of Swiss daily Tribune de Geneve quoted the Jewish charity's lawyer, Robert Equey, as saying the

visit was canceled because of the risk that protests by left-wing groups could result in violence. Protest organisers had called for participants to each bring a shoe to the rally outside the lakeside Hotel Wilson where the dinner was to be held. The shoe was meant to recall the moment an Iraqi journalist threw his footwear at Bush during a news conference in Baghdad in 2008. Groups including the New Yorkbased Human Rights Watch and International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) said the cancellation was linked to growing moves to hold Bush accountable for torture, including waterboarding. Bush, in his Decision Points memoirs on his 20012009 presidency, strongly defends the use of waterboarding as key to preventing a repeat of the September 11 attacks on the United States. "He's avoiding the handcuffs," Reed Brody, counsel for Human Rights Watch, told Reuters. Dominique Baettig, a member of the Swiss parliament from the People's Party, wrote to the Swiss federal government last week calling for the arrest of Bush for alleged war crimes if he came to the neutral country. Swiss judicial officials have said that Bush would still enjoy a certain diplomatic immunity as a former head of state. Source: Al-Jazeera

Musharraf on list of accused in BB case The Federal Investigation Agency submitted on Monday a fresh 57-page report in the Anti-Terrorism Court-III, declaring former president Pervez Musharraf as an accused in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case. FIA’s Special Public Prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali said in the court that investigators, while reinvestigating the case, had tried time and again to contact the former president for questioning him but he did not respond. He said that the FIA had mentioned him

as an absconder in the fifth interim investigation report. When Special Judge ATC-III Rana Nisar Ahmed asked the prosecutor whether the investigators had declared him a proclaimed offender, Chaudhry Zulfiqar said the former president had been mentioned as an accused and as an absconder, adding that the court could be requested to declare him as a proclaimed of-fender if Musharraf did not submit himself before the law. The investigators have cited the name of

Musharraf in column-II of the fresh investigation report under section 173 of criminal procedure code. They have put the former army chief at the disposal of the trial court, saying they had found no direct evidence against the former president so far. They said the former president could not be completely cleared at this stage. Official sources close to the investigations said a Joint Investigation Team of FIA had tagged statements of former intelligence bureau chief Ijaz Shah and former

Tunisia calls up army reserve to tackle violence

Tunisia asked military reservists to report for duty and warned police they would be fired for skipping work on Monday, in a new drive to restore order three weeks after an uprising overthrew the president. Security officials in the coalition government put in place after President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia have said there is a conspiracy by officials close to the old administration to spread chaos and take back power. After days of gunfights and looting immediately after Ben Ali was pushed out, it had seemed security was being restored but since last week violence has flared again, raising new questions about Tunisia’s stability. The military has for weeks been in the streets helping keep order and filling the gap left by a police force whose ranks have been thinned by desertions and absenteeism. “The Defense Ministry has called on retired members of the army, navy and air force ... to go to the regional centers of conscription and mobilization nearest to their place of residence,” said a ministry statement reported by the official TAP news agency. Tunisia’s uprising against Ben Ali’s authoritari-

an rule inspired protest movements elsewhere in the Arab world, notably in Egypt, and its halting progress toward stability is being watched closely in the region. In a separate statement, the Interior Ministry urged police to play their role in bringing back security. Public respect for the police is low because many Tunisians blame them for carrying out acts of violent repression during Ben Ali’s rule, and suspect them of trying to undermine the new government after he fled. “The Ministry of Interior calls on police officers to guarantee the security of the country and to act to help all those who ask their help in case of danger,” the official news agency quoted the ministry as saying. “In cases where police leave their workplace to answer urgent calls they must return as soon as the emergency is dealt with. If they do not return they will be considered as having left their job,” the ministry said. At least five people have been killed in violent incidents in provincial towns since Friday, including two shot dead in the northern city of El Kef when police tried to disperse protesters. There were no reports of any deaths or injuries on Monday but protesters clashed with police again in El Kef and set fire to buildings in the town, local media reported. In the Tunisian capital, about 300 employees of the foreign ministry staged a protest rally outside their workplace to demand that the minister, Ahmed Ounaiss, step down. He had angered many Tunisians by lavishing praise on French Foreign Minister Michele AlliotMarie, who is under fire at home from opposition politicians who accuse her of having cosy relations with Tunisia’s ousted administration. Inter-Korean talks collapse after North's walkout Military talks aimed at easing high tensions between North and South Korea broke down Wednesday when the North's delegation walked out, Seoul's defence ministry said. The two sides had been meeting for the first time since the North's deadly shelling of a South Korean island on November 23, which briefly sparked fears of war. A ministry spokesman told AFP the delegates even failed to discuss when to meet again. "Under the current situation, we can say the talks have collapsed." After two days of working-level discussions aimed at setting the agenda for a high-level military meeting, North and South remained far apart. The South demanded an apology at the proposed seniorlevel meeting for two bloody border incidents last year. Four people including civilians died in the shelling of Yeonpyeong island near the disputed Yellow Sea border. The South also accuses the North of torpedoing a warship last March near the border with the loss of 46 lives, a charge it denies. Earlier on Wednesday the South agreed in principle to hold separate Red Cross talks on reunions for families separated since the 195053 war. But the unification ministry said these could not now go ahead. The island bombardment, the first attack on a civilian area in the South since the war, sparked outrage in South Korea. Seoul said Pyongyang must apologise at high level talks both for the shelling and the warship sinking and punish those responsible. The North, however, said the talks should focus on halting all military actions that can be considered provocative by the other side. Pyongyang flatly denies involvement in the sinking of the South's warship. It says its attack on Yeonpyeong was in response to a South Korean live-fire drill there, which dropped shells into waters claimed by the North. The South's chief delegate Colonel Moon Sang-Gyun told reporters the North had described the warship allegations as a plot instigated by the United States to justify a policy of

confrontation on the peninsula. It repeated its earlier claim that the Yeonpyeong bombardment was caused by provocations from the South. Moon said he rejected the assertions as "nonsense". North and South had agreed to talk soon after their respective superpower patrons, China and the United States, called jointly for inter-Korean dialogue. "Both sides are now under international pressure to continue dialogue," Dongguk University Professor Kim Yong-Hyun told AFP. "I don't think the collapse of talks will escalate tensions again. After a cooling-off period, I believe the North will make a fresh proposal for a new round of military talks." After dire predictions late last year of nuclear war, the North abruptly changed tack in January and launched a spate of appeals for dialogue. Some analysts say the events fit a pattern in which the North manufactures a crisis, and then suggests negotiations in hopes of aid concessions. South Korea's JoongAng Ilbo newspaper said Wednesday that a North Korean diplomat, at a meeting in New York last month, had asked the United States to resume the food aid it suspended in 2009. China for its part is striving to revive six-party talks that offer the North economic and diplomatic benefits in return for nuclear disarmament. But the United States says the North must mend ties with the South before the nuclear dialogue can resume. North and South were briefly "in the same bed but dreaming different dreams", said Hong Hyun-Ik of Seoul's Sejong Institute think-tank. "The South believes the North's dire economic situation will force it to accept responsibility for the incidents, but the North cannot swallow its pride for the sake of opening talks with the South," Hong told AFP. "The North will now say to the US and China that it did all it could to resume dialogue with the South." Source: AFP

Cambodia, Thailand to face UN over border dispute Diplomatic efforts to resolve a festering border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia gained momentum on Wednesday, with the two adversaries set to address the UN Security Council next week. Thailand also raised the possibility of the first faceto-face talks between the two countries' foreign ministers since the deadly clashes erupted on Friday with a volley of shelling in disputed jungle surrounding a 900-year-old temple. Thai

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya will brief members of the Security Council on Monday on the rift, an aide said, adding that a meeting with his Cambodian opposite number Hor Namhong on the sidelines was "possible". In Phnom Penh, Prime Minister Hun Sen said his top diplomat was preparing documents for the UN meeting. At least eight people were killed in four days of cross-border violence, which forced thousands of families to flee on both sides of the frontier. Each side blames the other for starting the fighting but both have held fire since the last skirmish early Monday. The 11th-century Preah Vihear temple, built to honour the Hindu god Shiva, has been a source of contention between Thailand and Cambodia since it was granted UN World Heritage status in July 2008. The World Court ruled in 1962 that the clifftop structure belonged to Cambodia but both countries claim ownership of a 4.6-squarekilometre (1.8-square-mile) surrounding area. Shrapnel and artillery fire appear to have scarred Preah Vihear, although no structural damage is visible, according to an AFP photographer who visited the site. The world heritage body UNESCO said it was planning a mission to the area "as soon as possible" to assess the state of the temple, the most celebrated example of ancient Khmer architecture outside of Cambodia's Angkor Wat. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spoke with both prime ministers on Tuesday and said he again offered UN help to negotiate a deal to end the clashes. Thailand has said it sees no need for third-party mediation, while Cambodia has insisted on it. "I told Ban Ki-moon these are not armed clashes. This is a war," Hun Sen said in a speech in the Cambodian capital. "This war will be resolved through the mechanism of the United Nations." He said Cambodia was no longer interested in bilateral meetings. "But we will continue to negotiate peacefully" with the presence of a third party, he added. With a lull in violence, the UN Security Council has held back from formal talks on the unrest to give time to a mediation bid by Indonesia, chair of the ASEAN regional bloc, diplomats in New York said. Marty Natalegawa, foreign minister of Indonesia -- the current ASEAN chair -- held talks with his counterparts from both countries earlier this week and according to Hun Sen will also attend the New York meeting. It is unclear exactly what triggered the latest violence, but diplomatic frictions have grown since late December when seven Thais, including one lawmaker, were arrested by Cambodia near the border for illegal entry. Both Thailand and Cambodia have written to the UN Security Council twice about the border unrest. Cambodia has called for a UN buffer force to be put on the border and for an urgent Security Council meeting on the clashes, while Bangkok has accused Phnom Penh of seeking the "internationalisation" of the conflict. WHEN “CHANGE” IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO Current Arab uprising has shaken the foundations of autocratic regimes in the Muslim world, and those in power are sensible enough to appreciate the gravity of shockwave which toppled King Zain El Abedine of Tunisia while Hosni Mubarak is about to leave as well. Unfortunately, most of the Muslim countries are ruled by coup makers/dictators and the kings or monarchs. The revolution in Tunisia, a small Arab State of ten million people, was actually triggered by a young peddler, who continuously suffered from getting harassed by local officials almost every day till December 17, 2010 which happened to be the initial flash point in the current scenario. That very day, the poor guy was slapped and insulted by a policewoman. The officials confiscated his all belongings including “weighing scale and all the produce” he was selling. The harshness on the part of government officials sent him deeper into serious ‘depression mode’ where it became too much for him to tolerate any longer. On that very day he set himself ablaze and passed away three weeks later. Consequently, the irritated middle class Tunisian youth staged a month long peaceful protest and toppled the country’s dictator. That has actually set an example for residents of other countries to follow. Come what may, the youth now joined by the ladies and children are fully determined to bring about a positive change to eliminate the looming “status quo” which has been adversely affecting the newer generation. The younger people have been roaming in the streets of Tunisia, Cairo and elsewhere day and night. They are just ordinary people, who want to live with dignity.

Having exhausted their patience, the unemployed and the poor Egyptian “youth from all faiths” also came out in millions to fix the problems which have been ignored for long time. Uncovering the hidden destiny is the right of every citizen. They want to secure and ensure their economic well being. The voice for change is coming from sources other than military, religiosity or any organised group; rather it is purely a movement by the poor and middle class majority for personal financial strength. What can be expected of democracies with rigged elections in some countries and specifically in Egypt, where the ruling party allegedly managed to increase its parliamentary majority to 95 per cent? Resultantly, a tsunami like tide is in full gear and gradually advancing across the whole Middle East and beyond. It seems as if the autocratic political system is in imminent danger of total collapse. After Egypt, the revolution will probably hit Jordan, Algeria, Pakistan and other countries in the region. However, only time will tell. Indeed, the age old authoritarian rule is extremely unpopular - needing a swift change for the better. The protestors are serious enough to bring about a real change after three decades of their economic deprivation. The main irritating problem for the youngsters is unavailability of employment opportunity; hence they are simply looking for work, a shelter and two meals a day at least. They are sacrificing their lives to achieve that goal. The UN believes more than 300 Egyptians have lost their lives with more than 4,000 injured so far. Despite such a heavy loss of life and property, the protestors remain firm on

Egypt : Continued from pg 1 demands for democratic reform, adding, in a veiled warning, that the government doesn't "want to deal with Egyptian society with police tools." At one point in the roundtable meeting, Suleiman warned that the alternative to dialogue "is that a coup happens, which would mean uncalculated and hasty steps, including lots of irrationalities. We don't want to reach that point, to protect Egypt." Pressed by the editors to explain the comment, he said he did not mean a military coup but that "a force that is unprepared for rule" could overturn state institutions, said Amr Khafagi, editor-in-chief of the privatelyowned Shorouk daily, who attended the briefing. "He doesn't mean it in the classical way." "The presence of the protesters in Tahrir Square and some satellite stations insulting Egypt and belittling it makes citizens hesitant to go to work," he said. Egyptian military, widely hailed for professionalism and restraint, has vowed not to

use force against peaceful protesters. President Mubarak, his deputy and the new prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, are all retired military officers with deep links to the institution. Suleiman warned that calls by some protesters for a campaign of civil disobedience are "very dangerous for society and we can't put up with this at all." This comes a day after Suleiman announced a slew of constitutional reforms, to be undertaken by yet to be formed committees. Suleiman said that one committee would carry out constitutional and legislative amendments to enable a shift of power while a separate committee will be set up to monitor the implementation of all proposed reforms. The two committees will start working immediately, he said. Suleiman stressed that demonstrators will not be prosecuted and that a separate independent fact-finding committee would be established to probe the violence on February 2. Source: Al-Jazeera

demanding an immediate ouster of Hosni. Mostly the younger Arabs under the age of 30 are jobless. And, the economic growth is not compatible with population growth; therefore, general inequality has been quite rampant leading to a “culture of corruption” in all spheres of socio-economic set-up. Government’s prolonged indifference and lack of response to address the delicate situation has finally invited an ocean of irreversible tidal waves. “Go Mubarak go” is actually gaining momentum. Egypt depends on American aid and is the 2nd largest recipient of financial assistance. Now the poor Egyptian government has been losing $310m a day in lost revenue because of the ongoing crisis. Like Pakistan, many Arab states are going through political paralysis, where the parliaments consists of influential people who manage to get elected due to their dominance and influence which creates nothing but hurdles blocking election based on merit and integrity. Usually, holding election is just a show business by the ruling class in many sham democracies. The Arab states including the rich ones have kept their population away from higher education creating a loss of golden opportunities for their youth. The global recession has hit people hard enough to deprive them of food or fuel subsidies. Now the moderately educated youth are more aware of the world, hence, they genuinely desire for jobs in modern economic environment. Since the youth have no promising future, their frustration is further aggravated as they are denied personal freedom of expression. Furthermore, police brutality, widespread poverty, lack of housing, high

Protesters are at Tahrir square with their blood and their soul, while the army soldiers refuse to open fire on protesting crowds or stop people from painting antiMubarak slogans on battle-tanks, the president should take the message seriously, sooner the better. Mubarak is a ‘no go guy’ till September when his term actually ends. Washington has said the transition should bring greater democracy to ensure a free and fair vote. But protestors fear that without Mubarak’s immediate exit, the regime will emerge with the same authoritarian rule. However, the regime has almost collapsed and millionaires are running away, yet Hosni Mubarak is managing to hang on saying if he steps down, there would be chaos. Nevertheless, one thing is surely looming over the heads of other rulers - that is - if Hosni leaves, they will face similar threat. To take care of the trust deficit, the rulers are already taking precautionary measures. Yet, there is a great deal of trouble shooting to be carried out before it is too late. Independently elected legislatures, corruption free judiciary and bureaucracy are the answer for most of the administrative and economic ailments. Moreover, all Arab youth deserve self respect and freedom of expression. After all, they are desperate for prosperity.

Interestingly, another Special Public Prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar has avoided speaking about the investigation report submitted in the trial court and even said that no fresh report had been submitted. Separately, the trial court dismissed bail applications of two arrested police officers Saud Aziz, former Rawalpindi CPO, and Khurram Shahzad, the then SP of Rawal Town division. The police officers arrested in December last year had denied allegations of hosing down the crime scene and stopping the post-mortem of Ms Bhutto, saying her personal security was responsible for the breach of security. Brig (retd) Cheema informed the investigators that former president had directed him to arrange a press conference only three hours after the assassination of Ms Bhutto. They said the investigators had also attached an email sent by Musharraf to Ms Bhutto saying that her security depended on the nature of her relations with him. The email is being considered as a threat hurled by Musharraf. The investigators have also submitted a letter written by Ms Benazir to Mark Siegel, a foreign journalist, saying she felt threatened from Mr Musharraf, former Punjab chief minister Pervaiz Ellahi and Ijaz Shah. The joint investigation team has added three new charges in its fresh interim report. It has included section 21-I (abetment in terrorism) of Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, section 119

The Seven Phases of Prophet Muhammad's Life

By Javeed Akhter Traditional scholars divide Prophet Muhammad's (peace and blessings be upon him) life into the Makkah phase and the Madinah phase. This is chronologically valid and historically important. Additionally, I believe the Prophet's struggle can be naturally divided into seven phases. Each phase brings forth a different aspect of his noble personality and highlights a different facet of his sublime mission. Studying the various phases of the Messenger's mission and analyzing its internal dynamics are important factors that give the the Prophet's biography relevance for today.

The Seeker of Light in a Period of Darkness As Prophet Muhammad's biography is recorded, we find him pondering over soci-

etal ills for years. The society where he was born was in a state of moral, religious, economic, and social chaos. It is difficult to resist drawing similarities between the seventh century and today. Today’s society has become submerged in violence, abuse, exploitation, racism, alcoholism, economic disparity, and injustice, etc. The absence of morality in today’s society must weigh heavily on the minds of individuals with insight. They can draw personal inspiration from the Prophet's life. The Arab tribal society of the seventh century, whose structure was based on greed, debauchery, and violence, had changed in a very short time, by the Prophet, into a society with one of the highest moral, economical, and even political standards in history.

The Warner and Exhorter One time during his meditation in Hira' (a cave near Makkah), Prophet Muhammad received the divine revelation. This affirms that celestial knowledge is essential for guiding the limited human intellect. Therefore, we realize the enormity of the task ahead that had burdened the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is both fascinating and revealing that even the individual who later became the most influential man in human history had these initial periods of uncertainty about his mission. It was the Qur'an; the confidence and support of his loving wife Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her); and his close Companions who provided him with the support he needed - surely a lesson for us; less perfect human beings!

The Patient Optimist The next facet of his life was bringing about proactive change by inviting people to Islam. Change is always threatening, and the greater the change may be, the more threatening it is, and the more hostility it would face. This would apply to the change against any established system of practices, whether it is economic, social or behav-

ioral. It would also apply to the change in personal behavior, especially in the attitudes of people. Not surprisingly the struggle for change becomes life threatening. Muhammad had to put his life on the line, and on several occasions the nascent Muslim community had to face the possibility of total extinction. Fortitude in the face of adversities is the salient feature of that phase. The patience and tolerance which Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) displayed during that phase had been a source of strength to many Muslims who have found themselves stressed by apparently hopeless circumstances. The Pluralistic Leader The Migration to Madinah, which had marked the beginning of the next phase, involved careful planning and thorough execution. The Prophet demonstrated that selfhelp and reliance on Allah are both correlated and essential for success. By nominating the Prophet to leadership by the community of Madinah, another facet of his personality was revealed i.e. the capacity to create a truly pluralistic society with equity and dignity for all religious and ethnic groups. In a very short period after the Migration to Madinah, the Prophet proved his capability of uniting various factions and setting exemplary standards for cooperation among them. From a person under constant persecution, he became a successful leader with large administrative and judicial responsibilities. The "Covenant (Constitution) of Madinah" provided a good model to follow, even in today's inescapably multi-religious and multi-cultural world. The Courageous, Yet Reluctant Warrior After a brief respite, the Prophet's mission was consumed by the need to fight wars of survival. These three wars in four years, Badr, Uhud, and Al-Ahzab, besides posing a physical threat on Muslims, must have been extremely distracting and consuming of the Messenger's time and energy. Yet the work of building the community R.Ul-I kept ongoing. It is important to remem07 ber that even though faced 29292208 with very aggressive pro09 ponents, the Prophet and 10 his followers never initiat11 ed or instigated any wars. They engaged in these bat12 tles with high moral stan13 dards such as avoiding 14 killing the innocent and 15 using only the minimum 16 force needed. Women, children, and non-com17 batants were not to be 18 harmed. When the ene19 mies stopped fighting, 20 they were given immediate 21 protection. Striking a blow because of mere anger, even during a battle, was prohibited. Muhammad (peace and blessings be

upon him) used innovative strategies in battles, which include the use of the trench as a means for defense. During the digging of the trench he was an active participant. He consulted frequently with his Companions and followed the majority opinion, even when it was against his own judgment in some occasions.

The Statesman Par Excellence and Teacher During the next phase, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) showed the ability to compromise and used his foresight and wisdom to realize that peace, even at seemingly unfavorable terms, was better than hostility. The 'Treaty of Hudaibiyah' is a good example for those who negotiate with their opponents. The peace dividend, following this treaty with the Quraishites, was huge and resulted in an exponential increase in the number of Muslims. That also helped in building a model and a just society that functions in a logical manner. It is an egalitarian society with equity and justice for all, governed by mutual consultation, equality before the law and protection of its most vulnerable members, women, children, orphans, indigents, and slaves. As illustrated by many incidents from that phase of his life, the Prophet proved to be an exemplary statesman. He mediated disputes efficiently; kept pledges whenever he had given; and faced risks courageously, without compromising, for the sake of peace. His ambassadors to other nations brought with them a message of cooperation, proving his efficiency in diplomacy.

The Compassionate Ruler and Spiritual Leader The final phase began with the conquest of Makkah - indicating careful planning and the use of overwhelming force to achieve a victory with practically no loss of lives on both sides. He was humble in victory, compassionate, and forgiving to even his most intractable opponents, in a way that is unmatchable in history. The final sermon consolidates the social, economic, and moral changes that have been brought about in the society.

Volume 6, Book 61, Number 538: Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari: The Prophet said, "The example of him (a believer) who recites the Qur'an is like that of a citron which tastes good and smells good. And he (a believer) who does not recite the Qur'an is like a date which is good in taste but has no smell. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who recites the Qur'an is like the Raihana (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who does not recite the Qur'an is like the colocynth which tastes bitter and has no smell. It is time to prepare for the end. The anatomy of the mission, its growth, and evolution in some ways parallel the various stages of human life itself. These phases reflect not only the growing complexity of the message but also the increasing maturity of its recipients. The Prophet's fundamental mission was to interpret and spread the Qur'anic ideology. Almighty Allah says about the noble Prophet, (Indeed there is for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern) (Al-Ahzab 33:21) His wife `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) called him the living embodiment of the Qur'an. His special blessings for us were the Qur'an and Sunnah. It’s true that over time, many differences and sects have emerged amongst Muslims. Still, the core messages of the Qur'an, and its realization in the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are alive and potent, and continue to provide spiritual solace, intellectual satisfaction, and societal discipline to many, making Islam the fastest growing religion in the world. * Simplified version with slight modification of an article taken from www.IslamiCity.com Javeed Akhter is the Executive Director of the Chicago based International Strategy and Policy Institute. ‘The Devil’s Realm’ – An Interesting Seminar Held at Masjid Omar al-Farooq By: Feyoun Khan Abu Hurairah related that the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah exalt his mention) said: "Avoid the seven deadly sins which are: ascribing partners to Allah, (practicing) magic, killing a living being whose life has been declared sacred by Allah without justification, devouring usury (interest), misappropriating the property of an orphan, running away from a battlefield (without a justified reason) and slandering chaste, innocent believing women.” (Bukhari & Muslim) Witchcraft and magic are ancient human practices. Magic is sometimes defined as the ‘deception of showing something contrary to reality to an audience.’ In Islam, however, magic is defined as seeking the help of Satan or Jinns or to perform something harmful against oneself or to someone else. For thousands of years, people of all races have been fascinated, awed and fearful at the unknown and mystical, being heedless of the dangers and harm that they inflict. As Muslims, it is imperative for us to understand evil practices that take us out of the folds of Islam and to protect ourselves from them.

Shaykh Abdurrahmann Murad, the imam of Masjid Omar al-Farooq in East Vancouver offered a highly informative seminar last Saturday on how to recognize Sihr – or black magic – and its treatments according to the evidences found in the Qur’an and Sunnah. A full-capacity crowd came to learn all about the ‘evil eye,’ sorcery and witchcraft, exorcism, the strengths and weaknesses of Satan, as well as the methods of protection from the effects of Sihr. The topic was particularly relevant for the local Muslim community in light of allegations that some local Muslims who under the guise of piety, actively practice Sihr (black magic) – often benefitting financially from it. Shaykh Abdurahmann, while pointing out that placing one’s faith and trust in anything apart from Allah alone constitutes Shirk (the sin of ascribing partners to Allah), educated the crowd on the Qur’anic verses which, when recited regularly, are the only things that can protect us from the harmful effects of black magic and witchcraft. On the topic of the ‘evil eye,’ the Shaykh mentioned the Hadith of the Prophet (may Allah exalt his mention) who said: “The evil eye is a reality, and it can cause one to plunge to his death.” Stressing the importance of educating ourselves on this topic, he further mentioned that the Prophet (may Allah exalt his mention) warned us that “a majority of my Ummah will die from (the effects of) the evil eye.”(Bukhari) After attending this seminar, it was made abundantly clear that all types of sorcery and illusionism are Haraam (unlawful) in

Islam. The seminar taught that sorcery can only be performed with the aid of Satan, whose help is attained when the performer attributes them as partners to Allah in worship. Illusionism may not necessarily involve polytheism directly, but it may none-the-less lead one astray. It is a sin because it implies an act of disobedience to Allah. The Shaykh stressed that magic is a destructive act, and therefore Islam warns against it. Believers should avoid magic and magicians; take precautions to heed the danger they represent and attempt to expose their false allegations. The following evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah asserts this ruling: Allah says: “And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their own selves, if they but knew.” (Surah al-Baqarah, 2:102) Some potential effects of Sihr – black magic – are: incurable headaches, paleness (yellowness) of facial features, urge to urinate frequently, hot flashes (even in cold weather), irregular heartbeats, severe back pains near the base of the spine, heaviness in the back of the head and/or shoulder blades, depression, strong feelings of grief, sudden shift in behaviour, and longing for death. Other symptoms include the feeling of laziness or sleepiness upon hearing the recitation of the Qur’an, sudden loss of will to work, having recurring dreams of being envied by others, tearful yawns, unexplained diarrhea or constipation, and frequent urges to spit. Shaykh Abdurrahmann explained how we can seeks Allah’s protection from the effects of Sihr and the evil eye through the recitation of the Ruqyah Shari’ah (Qur’anic verses prescribed by the Shari’ah for this purpose) as

well as other means of protection found in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. One particular remedy is the recitation of Ayatul Kursi, or the Verse of the Throne (Surah alBaqarah, 2:225) after each of the five daily prayers and before going to bed. And what’s a seminar on Sihr without a lesson on Jinns. The Shaykh dedicated a significant portion of the seminar to this important topic. One of the evening highlights in this regard was an unforgettable video clip of a woman who had been possessed by a Jinn and the attempts to exorcise it. The popularity of the topic was indeed evidenced by the large gathering – men, women and even a few youth – so additional seminars on this topic are already in the works. The next seminar held at Masjid Omar alFarooq, however, will be themed “The Last Days” and will relate the minor and major signs leading up to the Last Day as prophesized by our Prophet Muhammad (may Allah exalt his mention) and the chain of events that Allah has revealed will take place to bring about the end of the world. Please check out www.daralmadinah.com or send an email to imam@daralmadinah.com to find out more about this and other upcoming seminars at the mosque. Masjid Omar alFarooq is located at 1659 East 10th Avenue, Vancouver (at Commercial Drive).

Masjid Al Salam hosts Weekend Islamic School Fund Raising Contributor: Amir Zaheer Masjid Al-Salaam Education Committee organized a fund raising dinner on Feb 5, to support the finances of the Weekend Islamic School. Approx. 350 people including children participated in the fund raising and by the grace of Allah (SWT) raised 14000$. It was a well managed program that was full of presentations by the young children attending the Weekend Islamic school program at the Masjid Al-Salaam Education Center. The management of the Masjid Al-Salaam would like to thank the efforts of all the brothers and sisters who made this fund raising dinner a successful one. The funds collected will help to start new programs for children and Muslim youth, improve the quality of Islamic education as well as to support the educational needs of the children who are unable to afford the cost of Islamic education and need financial

assistance. In addition to the fundraising, the education committee invited the parents to volunteer in various educational activities and to establish a parent’s advisory committee. They also urge the community to donate by filling a pledge form, sponsoring a child for a year or donating $ a day, by cash or a cheque. The ultimate gift that we can give to our children is to provide them the opportunity to learn about Islam and learn to recite and understand the book of Allah, Al-Qur’an al Kareem. To fulfill this need, Masjid AlSalaam has started a Kids Quran School

and a Sisters only Beginner’s Tajweed Class. More information on Masjid Al-Salaam education programs is available at http://www.bcmaburnaby.org/. Suggestions and comments on educational programs, volunteer and parent’s advisory committee applications or general information requests can be made by email: education@bcmaburnaby.org

WHEN SELECTING A HAJJ GROUP By: Akif Nazar Hajj is an experience that just cannot be put into words and it is an experience that is unique for each person. One simply has to go through it in order to completely understand what Hajj is all about and how it can change one's life. One of the conditions for Hajj though is that one must be able to afford it, only then is it obligatory upon a person. That is why for a lot of people this is a once in a lifetime experience. Al-Hamdu-lil-Allah, I was fortunate enough that at a young age, my wife and I were able to go for Hajj last year. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the spiritual aspect of Hajj, there are a lot of things I would do differently in terms of the planning aspect if I were to go again. That is the primary reason for me to compose this article. It is so that I can share my experience with all those brothers and sisters who are intending to go for Hajj this year, so that they are able to pick a group that would complement their trip and not be a hindrance during their Hajj. Picking the right group to go with is extremely important because if you end up with a group that provides poor services (as our group did) then you'll end up spending a lot of your time dealing with frivolous activities rather than focusing on your Hajj and your ibada. So what are the different things one should look out for and what kind of questions should one ask when choosing a particular Hajj travel agency or group? Based on my own experience, below is a list of things that I believe are crucial when picking a group: 1) Ask about the Imam travelling with the group: The Scholar/Aalim/Imam travelling with the group can either confuse you during Hajj or make your Hajj a lot more simpler and easy to follow. One may not realize this, but even though the Hajj steps are clearly laid out in the Quran and Sunnah, sometimes there are issues where one needs guidance, and that is when it is extremely important that you get the right information. If the Scholar/Imam himself does not have the right information then he may not only mislead himself but also mislead others. You have to remember that you may not get the opportunity to go for Hajj again, so you have to try your best to make sure that you perform all the steps according to the Quran and Sunnah in order

for your Hajj to be accepted. And that is where a Pious, Religious and Knowledgeable Imam can be a source of true guidance. Hence, when you find out which scholar is accompanying the group, make sure you invest time researching about him to ensure that he has sound knowledge of the deen and is someone trustworthy, honest and follows the Quran and Sunnah in all matters. 2) Ask about the hotel locations in Makkah and Madinah: In Makkah as well as in Madinah, there are numerous hotels, all situated at different distances from the Haram. Depending on how far your hotel is, that is how much time and effort you'd have to exert to go through the thousands of people and make it to the Haram. Keeping this in mind, make sure you get the closest possible location; the best is right opposite the Haram. That means that as soon as you step out of the hotel you enter the Haram. If the group does not tell you the exact name and address of the hotel then that means they are probably going to place you in a hotel that is farther away from the Haram. So, make sure that you confirm that the hotel is close to the Haram. One way to check is to search for the various hotels in Google Maps and then comparing the distances between all of them. 3) Ask about Aziziyah: Pretty much all groups arrange accommodation for a few days in a place called Aziziyah. Aziziyah is an area that is in the middle between the Haram and another city called Mina. Usually the Hujjaj are asked to move to a hotel in Aziziyah a few days before the Hajj begins. The hotels in Aziziyah have lower standards than the ones beside the Haram, so make sure you ask how good the building is where you are going to be staying in Aziziyah. Also, double-check the location of the hotel in Aziziyah and make sure that it is as close as possible to Mina. The reason being that when the Hujjaj are spending the days in Mina, they can come to this hotel in Aziziyah easily and quickly, in case they wish to take a shower or grab some clothes, or do some other task that they might not be able to do comfortably in the tents in Mina. 4) Ask about the meals: Make sure your group provides all the 3 meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. If they are not, then don't bother going with that group. The reason I'm emphasizing this point is

because the amount of time that you have to spend just to get food from a restaurant that is outside your hotel, is at least an hour or sometimes even two hours. This is because there are hundreds of people lined up at each restaurant and it takes a considerably long time to have your turn. Hence, double-check with the group coordinator and confirm that you'll be getting all the 3 meals during your entire trip. 5) Ask about the "Maktab" number: The "Maktab" number is essentially your camp or group number. The smaller this number is, the better it is for you. The tents in Mina are arranged not only by regions but also by the Maktab number. The smaller numbers are closer to the Jamaraat than the bigger numbers. Trust me, walking from your tent to the Jamaraat amongst thousands of people is an extremely daunting task. Crowds have a tendency to get riled up for whatever reason and that puts you and your family members at risk. To minimize this risk, it is important to choose accommodations that are closest to the potential sites that you'll have to visit during Hajj. Therefore, always ask the group coordinator questions like: "How far is the camp from the Jamaraat?" or "How far is the hotel from the Haram?" or "How far is the building in Aziziyah from Mina?" Distances matter! Farther the site, the more harder it will be to get there, which will only increase your frustration and even the possibility of not being able to perform a certain ritual on time. 6) Ask about transportation: Make sure that the agency or group you are travelling with, has its own dedicated bus for transportation. If the group doesn't have its own driver or bus and instead relies on public buses then do not travel with that group! Transportation is a huge problem during Hajj. There are millions of people and they are all trying to get to the same location, so you can imagine the chaos that ensues. Often, you'll see people competing and fighting to get into buses. That is why it is a must that the group has its own dedicated bus and driver. Make sure you get a clear answer about this point from the group coordinator. 7) Have it all in a written form: One of the major problems with Muslim businesses today is that they all expect you to trust them and take their word simply because they are Muslims. Take it from me, I

MIR A LE

fell into that trap and learned my lesson the hard way. Do not accept any verbal confirmation from the group coordinators. Rather, ask them to send it you in written form. Always make sure that you have written proof of whatever services the group is offering you. This, in fact, is the Sunnah. So, if someone insists and swears by Allah that they will give you the best service ever, do not take their word for it. Instead, ask them to write down exactly what services they will provide and then go even a step further and ask them to sign it. That way, if they fall short, you can hold them accountable for it later. 8) Research on your own: The final point that I wish to mention is that don't simply rely on the feedback of a few people who have gone to Hajj before with a particular group. They might have had a good experience with them, but you don't know what might be in store for you. To avoid any problems later, make sure you research as much as you can about the group. Check out their website, ask all the questions to the group coordinators, and ask as many people as you can about the group and then finally pray Salat-al-Istikhira and pick a group. The more research you do and the more you compare, the more you'll be able to narrow down your selection and pick the best one. Another point to keep in mind is that don't be stingy in this matter. If the group you want to go with is charging more but you know for a fact that they will live upto their word and provide all the services, then spend the extra dollar and go with that group. If you decide to go with a group that costs less, you'll most likely end up paying for it later. I hope that these points will help those brothers and sisters intending to do Hajj this year Insha-Allah. Remember that Allah (SWT) has intentionally made Hajj very challenging and tough. No one has an easy time during Hajj. In fact, it is full of struggle and pushing yourself to the maximum. However, if you have to cope with the extra overhead of dealing with bad management and bad services offered by the group, then that makes your Hajj even more difficult. That is why picking the right group is even more important. I'd like to conclude by saying that may Allah (SWT) help all those brothers and sisters intending to go for Hajj make the right decision and may Allah accept your Hajj (ameen).

The Bishwa Ijtema 2011 on the bank of Turag River Tens of thousands of Muslims seeking peace and the revival of Islam's tenets joined a mass prayer Sunday to wrap up an annual three-day Islamic congregation outside the Bangladeshi capital at Tongi. It was

It shuns

cal discussion. The local police estimated the number of attendees of 2007 ijtema to be 3 million while in 2010 the number of attendees was 5 million. The first meeting was reportedly held in 1946 (although various sources indicate other dates for this) and continues to be organized by the Bangladesh Tablighi Jamaat. The Ijtema is non-political, and therefore perhaps it draws people of all persuasion. Prayer is held for the spiritual adulation, exaltation and welfare of the Muslims community. This immensely popular program gives the people of Bangladesh an opportunity to interact with Muslims from other countries and is commonly attended by prominent political figures.

at the same venue. The gathering of devotees of all ages spilled over to the roads and areas around the Ijtema venue as Akheri Munajat started. Pin-drop silence prevailed at the virtual sea of humanity with the prayers offered using loud speakers. People who could not reach the venue joined the prayers over the cell phone. Many devotees had to walk around 20km to reach near the venue while many others stopped on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. A number of devotees said they could not join the munajat as loud speakers were installed only at Ijtema venue while the crowd spread up to around 10 km from it. And thousands of people were seen on the rooftops of buildings, on open fields and roads nearby. Thousands of people from the capital and nearby districts started moving towards Tongi by buses, trucks and trains, and many more walked for miles to join the concluding prayers. Several square km areas around the Ijtema venue were crowded by 1:00am yesterday. A three-tier security system was in place to ensure peaceful holding of the congregation. About 1,000 members of intelligence agencies were deployed at and around the venue. Surrey School Trustee Ijaz Ahmed Chatha stays loyal to SCC and his voters! Ijaz Ahmed Chatha, Surrey School Trustee with the Surrey Civic Coalition, said he is disappointed that School Trustees Terry Allen and Laurie Larsen have left SCC but said he will remain with the party. "It's a matter of loyalty," said Chatha. "I stood with voters and parents to try to improve education in Surrey and the voters had confidence in me. I am proud to stay and work with SCC and those who supported me." Chatha said Allen and Larsen invited him to join a new party made up of the current trustees but he declined. Allen was a founding member of SCC and was elected three times with SCC. Larsen was nominated twice, and the second time was elected. SCC President Stephanie Ryan also

expressed disappointment for the defection but said SCC will move on. "We will miss working with Trustees Allen and Larsen, but SCC will regroup and move forward in preparation for the November 2011 election. We will endorse school trustee candidates who are willing to actively lobby Victoria for adequate funding, for reduced class sizes, and for new school construction," Ryan said.

Ryan thought the former SCC trustees left due to differences in the nomination process. "They (Allen and Larsen) didn't want any more trustee candidates to be nominated for the November election, just the three incumbents," she said. The SCC executive wanted to nominate more trustee candidates. Chatha said, "SCC is a democratically-run political party where the majority makes decisions which is the beauty of our system. I may have a different opinion at the table but in the end, this is the reality that we should accept and this is what I believe." Chatha said SCC made every effort to reach a compromise on internal differences. There was an important strategy

meeting about a week ago to finalize the nomination process and other decisions about the campaign, but Allen and Larsen did not attend. "I went to that meeting. I listened to what everyone said and I tried to offer suggestions to help everyone," said Chatha. Ryan said, "SCC will endorse school trustee candidates who are willing to actively lobby Victoria for adequate funding, for reduced class sizes, and for new school construction." She said SCC, "will stress the importance of City Council and the Board of Education working together so we can reduce the embarrassing number of portables in the Surrey School District.” For further information, please contact: Ijaz Ahmed Chatha 778-883-0161 Stephanie Ryan 778-855-8574

CALLING ALL CANADIAN CHARITIES! WIND Mobile to donate more than $500,000 through new competition ~ Best Conversation Ever TORONTO, - February 2, WIND Mobile launched a first-of-its-kind competition called Best Conversation Ever that asks Canadians the question: if you could talk to anyone in the world, who would it be? Five lucky people will actually win the conversation of their dreams, and to make it happen, WIND Mobile will donate more than half a million dollars to Canadian charities. “The goal of this unprecedented competition is to make a few dreams come true and help some important Canadian charities along the way,” says Anthony Lacavera, Chairman of WIND Mobile. “First, we are going to donate $100,000 on behalf of each of the chosen per-

sonalities for participating in a conversation with our five winners - for a total of $500,000. Then, we are going to donate an additional $100,000 to six charities based on popularity in the Charity Challenge at www.BestConversationEver.ca.” The Charity Challenge is a part of the Best Conversation Ever competition and is based on popular voting. The most popular charity will receive $50,000 and the five runner-ups will each receive $10,000. Charities can increase their chances of winning by encouraging their supporters to vote for them every day. Currently in the lead is St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club of Greater Toronto proving

it’s not just national charities that will win. “We help brighten the lives of over 3,000 children and youth in Toronto and are always looking for ways to do more for the kids,” says Chris Foster, Executive Director, St. Alban’s Boy’s and Girls’ Club. “We are in the final phase of building a Jane and Finch Youth Centre and if we are successful in the Charity Challenge we will have enough funds secured to be able to open our doors by the summer!” “There are only 36 days left to vote, so let your favourite charity know about this great opportunity and encourage your friends and family to vote,” concluded Lacavera.

Record $22 M donation establishes Beedie School of Business at SFU By: Public Affairs and Media Relations Simon Fraser University Ryan and Keith Beedie have donated $22 million to Ryan’s alma mater—SFU Business, which will now be named the Beedie School of Business. This is the largest gift that Simon Fraser University has ever received. SFU will use the gift to create an endowment supporting students, professorships and research chairs.

“What’s great about our donation is that it’s an investment in the future,” says Ryan Beedie. “The endowment will be there for generations to come, to give students the SFU education that I was fortunate to have had and to enable the university to attract the best teachers and researchers.” “Receiving a gift of this magnitude is wonderful for the university,” says SFU president Andrew Petter, “but having it come from a

Super Bowl Fans sue over ticket issues

The NFL has offered money, tickets, merchandise and more to roughly 400 fans who had to give up their seats at the Super Bowl. It might not be enough. Approximately 1,000 fans sued the NFL, the Cowboys and owner Jerry

Jones on Wednesday saying they were deceived by not getting seats or received inadequate seats. The federal lawsuit, filed in Dallas, alleges breach of contract, fraud and decep-

tive sales practices. "We think that this is a pretty straightforward matter," said Michael Avenatti of Eagan Avenatti which is representing the fans, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "People did not obtain what they were told they were going to get." The lawsuit seeks $5 million in actual damages for the plaintiffs -- but that number can be tripled under the state's trade law -- and unspecified punitive damages, according to Bloomberg. Spokesmen for the Cowboys and the NFL had no comment. About 1,250 fans were displaced after some temporary seating sections were not completed in time at Cowboys Stadium on Sunday in Arlington, Texas. Other seating was found for 850 fans, but 400 were forced to watch the game on monitors or use standing-room platforms. The league initially said Monday those fans would get $2,400 -- three times the face value of the ticket -- and tickets to next season's Super Bowl. The fans also were allowed on the field after the game and given merchandise and food. On Tuesday, the NFL added a second option: They can choose to attend any future Super Bowl instead of being limited to the 2012

game and receive round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations. If fans choose that option, they will not get the $2,400. They can wait until after the conference championship games each season to see whether their favorite team reaches the Super Bowl. If fans choose the first option of next year's game plus the $2,400, the ticket is transferable, which means it can be sold on the secondary ticket market. It won't be transferable in the other option. Some fans who were moved want compensation as well. Mike Dolabi said that when he paid for his seat license at Cowboys Stadium, he was promised "the best sightlines in the stadium" for the Super Bowl, according to Bloomberg. Instead, some fans received "temporary metal fold-out chairs" in an attempt to break the Super Bowl attendance record, according to the complaint. "The NFL and Jerry Jones sold something to fans they weren't able to deliver, and they knew they weren't able to deliver it," Avenatti said, according to Bloomberg. The Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 on Sunday. The NFL said it is working with the Packers, Steelers and Cowboys to track down all of the affected fans.. Source: ESPN

Butt out for 10 years, Asif 7 and Amir 5 Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir have been banned for 10, 7 and 5 years respectively after an ICC tribunal found them guilty of spot-fixing stemming from the Lord's Test against England last year. The sanctions against Butt and Asif have five and two years suspended, which means that the trio cannot play any official, sanctioned cricket, international or domestic, for a minimum of five years, until September 2015. The suspended sentences on Butt and Asif have been made conditional on their making no further breaches of the code and participating in an anti-corruption education programme, under the auspices of the PCB. Butt, who was captain during the series in England, received the maximum sentence but one charge against him of batting out a maiden over during the Oval Test - was dismissed. However, he was found to have not disclosed an approach by Majeed that he should bat the maiden over. The other charges that were upheld relate to the subsequent Lord's Test, where Amir and Asif were found to have bowled deliberate no-balls and Butt was penalized for being party to that. Amir will appeal against the decision to the Court of Arbitration Sports, but the other two players have not yet said whether they will. The announcement on Saturday evening followed a day of deliberations in Doha between the three-man tribunal - comprising the head Michael Beloff QC, Sharad Rao and Justice Albie Sachs - the players and their legal teams and the ICC's lawyers. The three players began the day requesting the tribunal for a deferral of any verdict, in light of the statement on Friday by the UK's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) that the players might also face criminal charges relating to the Lord's Test as the result of a separate investigation carried out by British police. The players, who continued to maintain their innocence, argued that a judgment today by the tribunal could be prejudicial to any criminal trial in the UK, but the request was rejected. The length of the sentences may be considered surprising to the extent that at least one life ban had been predicted beforehand. Now, in theory, the 26-year-old Butt could return after five years if he complies with the conditions of the verdict. Amir, who will only turn 19 in April, could also conceivably harbour hopes of a return, though in practical terms a five-year gap from any competitive cricket makes the prospect of a return that much more difficult. The situation is most bleak for Asif, who will be 33 by the time the minimum five years are up. It must also be noted that not until the full judgment is released will the picture become fully clear, especially with regards to the nature of the rehabilitation programme they must undertake and the role the PCB will have in that. The tribunal asked the ICC to publish the full judgment as soon as possible and it is expected to happen tomorrow. The question, however, of whether or not the full judgment may be deemed prejudicial to any criminal proceedings in the UK still looms. A member of the ICC legal team told ESPNcricinfo that it is "very happy with the fact that the players were convicted." But given that the governing body was pushing for maximum sanctions, there will be at least a tinge of disappointment within the governing body. The tribunal also recommended that the ICC make "certain changes to the code with a view to providing flexibility in relation to minimum sentences in exceptional circumstances." The lawyers of Butt and Amir later said that the tribunal would've given lower punishments had their hands not "been tied" to the code's range of sanctions. News of the World, the tabloid that broke the spot-fixing story this summer, released a statement of its own, saying that "it is now clear to everyone in the game that corruption will not be tolerated," and added that it will continue to assist the police in any way it can. A number of Pakistani fans waited outside the Qatar Financial Centre, some for the entire nine-hour duration of the proceedings, and gave vociferous support to the players when they eventually came out. Amir, in fact, was mobbed and had to return inside the building briefly. Source: Cricinfo

RODGERS LEADS PACKERS PAST STEELERS TO WIN SUPER BOWL Super Bowl MVP Aaaron Rodgers threw for 3 TDs and 304 yards to lead the Packers to their fourth Super Bowl. The Packers capitalized on the three Pittsburgh turnovers by turning them into 21 points.

VANOC warned well before luge death Organizers of last year's Winter Olympics warned almost one year before a Georgian luger died that athletes could be "badly injured or worse" on the track and that they could get the blame, a report said Monday. Games organizing committee chief executive John Furlong said in a March 2009 email obtained by public broadcaster CBC that the International Luge Federation (FIL) had warned "that the track is in their view too fast and someone could get badly hurt. "An athlete gets badly injured or worse and I think the case could be made we were warned and did nothing," he added, referring to a copy of a letter from the FIL to the track's designer expressing concern over high speeds on the track. FIL president Josef Fendt had noted speeds up to 20 kilometres per hour faster than the track designer had projected. "Most of the athletes were able to cope with these extremely high speeds," Fendt wrote to IBG Designs in Germany. "Nevertheless, overstepping this limit would be an absolute unreasonable demand for the athletes.... This causes me great worry." CBC said Furlong asked lawyers to look into it and Tim Gayda, organizing committee vice-president for sport, replied: "I don't believe there is anything to do." Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, died hours before the February 12 opening of the Winter Games in Vancouver when his sled hurtled off the luge track at Whistler and slammed into a steel pillar, throwing a pall over the start of the event. An autopsy determined Kumaritashvili died of extensive head and torso injuries. A coroner's report released in October said no "single factor" was to blame for Kumaritashvili's death, but pointed to his "relative lack of experience... on this challenging track" as

contributing to the accident. Georgia's Olympic Committee rejected the conclusions. The coroner's report also noted that the president of the International Luge Federation had expressed concerns to Canadian officials one year before the Games regarding speed hazards at the luge track. Vancouver Games organizers found in their own inquiry that the notoriously high-speed track -- later modified and shortened -- was not at fault, blaming driver error instead. Furlong told CBC on Monday, "My concern was, are we doing everything that we need to do? And when I spoke to our team, spoke with the sport, and spoke with everybody involved, the feeling was that we were doing exactly what our responsibilities demand we do." He noted that the organizing committee was "not an expert in these areas" and that it relied on sports officials' assessment of the track. Canada's Minister of State for Sports Gary Lunn expressed support for Furlong, saying the email exchange revealed Furlong had done "additional due diligence" in the matter. Source: AFP

Ms. Clark has refused to confirm reports that her team signed up 25,000. “I am very confident with the numbers of people that came in to support me, but I don’t rest on my laurels about it,” Ms. Clark said when pressed on the issue. Ms. Clark said she was not aware of any photocopied membership forms being used in her campaign, and added that she has faith in the party to deal with any irregularities. However, she said membership issues should not be the basis for negative campaigning among the six candidates. “As candidates, we shouldn't be attacking each other on these things,” she told reporters in Burnaby after a speech to outline her “Families First” policy agenda. “What it does is it serves to help the NDP more than any of the particular candidates in the race.” Norman Stowe, a spokesman for the Falcon campaign, said he did not have any information on the 40 members from a single address, but that they might be employees at a single workplace. Canada : Continued from pg 1 improperly photocopying membership signup forms. Last week it was disclosed that a supporter of Ms. Clark signed up a cat as a party member. Mr. Campbell rejected a suggestion that all of this will hurt the image of the BC Liberals, noting that New Democrats were recently “battering one another” over similar issues. “I don’t think it’s unusual to have a discussion about memberships, particularly when there’s a real drive to sign up members across the board,” he said. Mr. Campbell said he expected both the Liberals and the New Democrats will manage their situations to elect the best possible leaders. Ms. Kim said the party’s membership now stands at about 90,000, up from 36,000 in November. On Feb. 26, party members will choose a successor to Mr. Campbell from six contenders. The campaign of Mike de Jong, the former attorney-general, has claimed 10,000 new members, and Mr. Falcon 17,500. The other campaigns have
