ISLAMABAD: The government has announced a stunning Rs1.761 trillion in new revenue measures for the next fiscal year, which, a deeper examination reveals, may contribute to another bout of inflation in the country. The focus of the budget seems to be on withdrawing most exemptions from sales tax and customs duty which, though not fully reflected in the finance minister’s budget speech on the floor of National Assembly, is evident from the language of the

The Prophet (SAW)said the following about Day of Arafat: This is a day on which those who control their hearing, sight, and tongue will be forgiven.[Narrated in Musnad Ahmad]

Hajj Day 2: 9th of Dhul Hijjah (Day of Arafat)

On the second day of Hajj, known as Yawm al-Arafat (the Day of Arafat) or Yawm al-Wuquf (the Day of Standing), pilgrims travel to the plain of Arafat where they combine Dhuhr and Asr prayers and engage in Wuquf, the most solemn rite of the Hajj. After sunset, they leave for Muzdalifah without performing Maghrib salah.

Fajr in Mina

After spending the night in Mina, you will perform the Fajr prayer in the morning. As previously mentioned, wake up at least an hour before Fajr to use the washing facilities and avoid the crowds. You will now have offered five obligatory prayers at Mina before departing for Arafat.

Fasting

Although fasting on the Day of Arafat is very virtuous for non-pilgrims, it isn’t recommended for pilgrims. Ikrimah I narrates:

I entered upon Abu Hurairah in his house and asked him about fasting the Day of Arafat at Arafat. Abu Hurairah said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (SWT) forbade fasting the Day of Arafat at Arafat.’

Takbir al-Tashreeq

Starting immediately after Fajr salah on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, audibly recite Takbir al-Tashreeq at least once after every fardh salah, up to and including Asr salah on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah (a total of 23 fardh prayers).

Takbir al-Tashreeq is the recitation of the following:

Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, lā ilaha illa Llāhu wa Llāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, wa li Llāhi l-Hamd.

Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity besides Allah and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and all praises are for Allah only.

• Talbiyah is recited after Takbir alTashreeq.

• Takbir al-Tashreeq is wajib (obligatory) for both men and women, according to the Hanafi Madhhab.

• Men will recite it audibly, whilst women will recite it softly.

Virtues of the Day of Arafat

The Prophet (SAW)said in a Hadith: Hajj is Arafat.

[Narrated in Sunan al-Tirmidhi]

This saying of the Prophet (SAW) indicates that standing on the plains of Arafat during Yawm al-Arafat is of such immense importance that without it, the entire Hajj is invalid.

The Prophet (SAW) said the following about this day:

There is no day on which Allah ransoms more slaves from the Fire than the Day of Arafat. He draws closer and closer, then He boasts about them before the angels and says: ‘What do these people want?’

[Narrated in Sunan Ibn Majah]

Arrival in Arafat

The word “Arafat” is derived from the Arabic verb “arafa”, which means “to know” or “to recognise”. Imam al-Qurtubi V, the famous Maliki scholar, said:

another.

For your Hajj to be deemed valid, you must perform Wuquf in Arafat i.e. you must spend a portion of time in Arafat between midday and the beginning of Fajr on the following day. If you don’t reach Arafat during this period, your Hajj will be regarded as incomplete. If you arrive early, take some time to rest and get some sleep, as the time of Arafat doesn’t begin until after midday. Some people erroneously start their du’a for Arafat before midday and rest in the evening; this is an incorrect practice and should be avoided.

During the course of the day, you should spend as much time in dhikr and ibadah (worship) as possible. It is perhaps a day that you will never experience again, so make the most of it.

Pilgrims praying outside Masjid al-NamirahPilgrims praying outside Masjid Nimra Dhuhr and Asr Salah in Arafat

After midday, if you haven’t already done so in Mina, perform ghusl.

You will then head towards Masjid Nimra, combining the Dhuhr and Asr prayers in Qasr mode, i.e., shorten them.

This is the location where the Prophet (saw) delivered his sermon during his final Hajj. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims will congregate here, so if you cannot get a space in or around the mosque, you can pray in your tent.

According to the Hanafi Madhhab, there are two opinions regarding combining Dhuhr and Asr salah:

Dhuhr and Asr can only be combined in Masjid Nimra behind the Imam. The two prayers cannot be combined in the tents, so they must be performed during their respective times in the tents if the masjid is inaccessible. This is the opinion of Imam Abu Hanifah.

The two prayers can be combined in the tents at the time of Dhuhr. This is the opinion of Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad, the two foremost students of Imam Abu Hanifah X.

Both viewpoints are valid, so choose one that you wish to follow.

Thousands of pilgrims outside Masjid alNamirah in ArafatThousands of pilgrims outside Masjid Nimra

The other three Sunni schools of thought state that combining the prayers in the tents is permissible.

Before the salah takes place in the mosque, there is a khutbah (sermon).

Those who manage to get a space in the masjid or are within hearing distance should listen to the khutbah attentively.

The combined salah is then

The Story of Ibrahim (AS) - Ibrahim’s (AS) Sacrifice

The story of Qurbani states that Ibrahim (AS) experienced a dream one night in which Allah (SWT) told him to sacrifice Ismail (AS), his beloved son. At first, Ibrahim (AS) believed this was the devil playing tricks on him, and he immediately disregarded it. However, the following night, the same dream occurred again, commanding him to do the same. Ibrahim (AS) then came to realise that this was no fluke and was, in fact, a message from Allah (SWT).

Ibrahim (AS) loved his son, Ismail (AS). Yet he was fully prepared to follow Allah’s (SWT) command and do as He instructed. He took his son to the top of Mount Arafat and brought with him a knife and rope. Upon reaching an appropriate place, he told his son about his dream and what Allah (SWT) had commanded him to do. Being an obedient son, Prophet Ismail (AS) immediately obliged the wishes of Allah (SWT) and his father and asked that his hands and legs be tied so that he may not struggle and that his father blindfolds himself so that he does not have to witness him suffer.

Ibrahim (AS) did as Ismail (AS) had said. Blindfolded and with the knife in his hands, he did as Allah (SWT) had asked of him. When he took the blindfold off, to his surprise, he saw the body of a dead ram in front of him. Ismail (AS) was completely unharmed, standing right next to him. At first, he thought that something had gone horribly wrong and that he had disobeyed the or-

der of his Creator. Then, he heard a voice telling him that Allah (SWT) looks after his followers and that he need not worry. A divine miracle had taken place.

Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) had just passed a difficult test from Allah (SWT).

Performing Qurbani Today

Since the first Qurbani Eid story, every year, during the month of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the holy calendar, Muslims from around the world perform Qurbani to remember what Ibrahim (AS) did. We use his deed to inspire devotion, obedience, and submission in our own lives. Muslims sacrifice animals (preferably a goat, cow, or camel) using special rules and practices in memory of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) sacrifice.

Therefore, the significance of Qurbani is a lesson in obedience and submission.

We must obey Allah’s (SWT) command without pause. We must perform the tasks He has ordained compulsory for all Muslims, such as praying Salat, performing Sawm, paying Zakat, and embarking on the Hajj pilgrimage. May Allah (SWT) enable us to perform the Sunnah of Ibrahim (AS) year in and year out. Ameen.

Due to the firm faith of both father and son, Ismail (AS) was replaced by a ram, and his life was spared by Allah (SWT). In this story, we must, therefore, remember that Eid ul-Adha is not just a celebration but a remembrance of one of the greatest sacrifices in history.

As we remember the Qurbani story every year, and we remember the obedience, devotion, and submission that he showed on that fateful day atop the mountain, we think of the importance of the celebration of Qurbani and what we must do to honour it. For those wondering how to give Qurbani in the UK, Muslim Aid can help. By giving Qurbani in the UK, you serve those most in need and unite the Ummah in this time of joyous celebration as you follow a commandment that is blessed by Allah (SWT). Source: muslimaid.org

Hajj, Eid ul Adha and Where We Stand!

There is a strong hope that when you read this article, inshallah, the pilgrims of Hajj will have gone to perform the rest of the Hajj rituals. Many Muslims around the world come to perform their holy duties in Saudi Arabia. They visit at the Holy places of Makkah and Madinah with great enthusiasm. Thus, every year Allah(swt) gives millions of people this opportunity to be blessed with the happiness of Hajj. For more than four decades, the number of pilgrims has been increasing significantly and now this number is minimum between two to three million every year. It happens, not only among the old but also among the young generation, the passion and love for Hajj is increasing more and more, which is a very welcome thing for the entire Muslim Ummah, and a way of salvation for our coming generations. May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala increase our spirit more, Ameen.

Before leaving for Hajj, great

enthusiasm has been seen in the preparations but many of us can demonstrate this spirit of faith only for one or two months after performing Hajj. It happens, the hustle and bustle of the world slowly pull us towards, and we start the same pre-Hajj routine, and the pilgrims get lost somewhere, we forget that a few days ago or a few weeks ago we have returned from a sacred duty. There is a blessed hadith about the virtues of Hajj:

“That is, whoever performed Hajj to the House of Allah with all manners and conditions, did not come close to sin, nor did any foolish act, that person is purified from sins.” He returns as if he was pure on the day he was born from his mother’s womb” (Ibn Majah p. 213).

But after coming back, we don’t even remember how we were crying at this holy place and asking forgiveness from our Allah SWT for our sins. The spiritual peace that came from the visit of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) Mosque is lost some-

where in the hustle and bustle of the world. If we try to keep the sacred moments that we spent in Makkah and Madinah may be both the world and the hereafter will be accomplished. After returning from there, one should think about what I was before and what I am now, where I was before and where I stand now, has this holy presence had any effect on my day and night, has there been any change, whether have I been close to Allah and turned towards the teachings of Messenger. What is the effect of the collective prayers in the field of Arafat on us? All the Muslim leaders are also often present there at the occasion of Hajj. Does it have any effect on them?

As we all know the biggest sign of acceptance of Hajj is that a person abandons a life of sins and adopts a life of virtues according to the teaching of Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).

Do your best in fulfill the rights of Allah as His faithful servant. Remember Al-

lah every day in worship and in daily routine. Always seek the pleasure of Allah and give priority to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at every opportunity of life. Keep your personal and private life free from sins as much as possible. About life after Hajj, we should all examine ourselves so that those of us who have performed Hajj, how and how we are living our daily life today. Please remember all the Muslim Ummah in your prayers. May Allah forgive those martyred especially in Kashmir and Palestine and those who are currently injured, sick in hospitals, or at home, or may Allah grant them health and well-being and those who have been displaced in Palestine. May Allah restore them to their proper place, we all should pray for them in the Eid prayer especially for Palestine, Kashmir and for Muslims all over the world who are currently suffering or going through the trials.

summer seasonal forecast.

In a news conference Tuesday, Jennifer Smith, a national warning preparedness meteorologist with ECCC, said that most of the country can expect above-average temperatures this summer.

“There is a high probability of

above-normal average temperatures for the summer season,” she said. “It’s important to note that this … does not indicate by how much temperatures are expected to be above normal, nor by how continuous those temperatures may be.” She also noted that we can expect the normal ups and downs of summer. “Daily weather will vary,”

she said. “Expect heat waves, cool spells and all the fluctuations that summer weather brings.” Most of the above-average temperatures will occur in the North, down into northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and then extend into southern Ontario and eastward toward Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. The only part of the country that is

forecast to be near-normal or below average was coastal British Columbia. “It doesn’t mean that those parts of Canada won’t experience warm spells, but when evaluating the season on a whole, the net temperature might not be above what is climatologically normal,” Smith said... Source: cbc.ca/news

Trudeau says he considered stepping down during marriage difficulties

that they had agreed to separate. During an episode of the ReThinking podcast that was released Tuesday, psychologist and host Adam Grant asked Trudeau how often he thinks about quitting.“These days not at all,” Trudeau said, before conceding that the thought crossed his mind last year. “There was a

moment last year as I was facing some difficulties in my marriage where I really wondered, ‘OK, is there a path [to step aside]?

“I just realized, that’s not me. There is so much to do still.”In an interview with Radio-Canada in March, Trudeau playfully said he thinks every day about quitting his “crazy,” “super tough” and at times “challenging” job.

Trudeau told Grant that those comments were meant to suggest that he checks to ensure he’s “all in” on the job. “If you’re going to be honest about doing a job like this, that has the responsibilities and impact it has, you have to check that — maybe not every day — but you have to check that you’re up for it, that you’re all in,” he said.

“Even though I’ve been in it for a

few years, even though it’s harder now than it was before, even though my opponent is getting traction … if they are enough to make you say, ‘No,’ then you shouldn’t be doing it.”

Federal Board of Revenue Chairman Zubair Tiwana avoided sharing details about the exemptions being withdrawn when he was asked relevant questions at a technical briefing held at the FBR’s headquarters. He also avoided sharing hard copies or any specifics of the measures being taken with the media, presumably to maintain the ‘positive impression’ that had been created by the budget speech. Wars in Gaza, Ukraine loom over G7 summit as Trudeau heads to Italy

Canada, U.S. looking to use frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.

The prime minister travels to Italy today to meet with world leaders as wars in Gaza and Ukraine cast a shadow over this year’s G7 summit. “This is a moment of real uncertainty,” said Roland Paris, a former foreign policy adviser to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and an international affairs professor at the University of Ottawa. “Uncertainty about the future of Ukraine, uncertainty

about the fate of democracy. “So it’s really important for these leaders to come together and demonstrate that they can do something in response to these challenges.” The annual international forum brings together seven of the world’s advanced economies — Canada, the U.S., the U.K, Italy, France, Germany and Japan — and the European Union for informal group conversations and one-on-one talks.

The three-day summit that starts Thursday is particularly significant this year, Paris said, because there is “much more competition and disagreement in the world” and many global institutions are no longer working “very effectively.”..Source:cbc.ca/news

Gun conviction not the end of Hunter Biden’s legal woes. Here’s what awaits U.S. president’s son

Sentencing, likely appeal and California tax trial ahead for Joe Biden’s son.

Hunter Biden’s legal woes are not over after his conviction on three felony firearms charges in a trial that put a spotlight on his drug-fuelled past. Now, U.S. President Joe Biden’s son faces sentencing, and another criminal trial on tax charges in the middle of his father’s re-election campaign.

Jurors found Hunter Biden guilty on Tuesday after just three hours of deliberations over two days in the federal court in Wilmington, Del. The case stemmed from a gun he bought in 2018 while, as prosecutors say, he was in the throes of a crack cocaine addiction.

Sentencing

He was convicted of lying on a mandatory gun purchase form by saying he was not il-

legally using or addicted to drugs.

The three counts carry up to 25 years in prison. But whether the president’s son actually serves any time behind bars will be up to U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika. 8 people with possible ISIS ties arrested in U.S. on immigration violations: AP sources

WASHINGTON - Eight people from Tajikistan with suspected ties to the Islamic State group have been arrested in the United States in recent days, according to multiple people familiar with the matter.

The arrests took place in New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles and the individuals, who entered the U.S. through the southern border, are being held on immigration violations, said the people, who were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investiga-

tion by name and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The nature of their suspected connections to the ISIS was not immediately clear, but the individuals were being tracked by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, or JTTF. They were in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which made the arrests while working with the JTTF, pending proceedings to remove them from the country. The individuals from Tajikistan entered the country last spring and passed through the U.S. government’s screening process without turning up information that would have identified them as potential terrorism-related concerns, said one of the people familiar with the matter.

rs2.12 trillion proposed for armed forces

ISLAMABAD: The government on Wednesday proposed an allocation of Rs2.12 trillion for the armed forces in the upcoming fiscal year (FY 2024-25), marking a substantial increase of 17.6pc compared to last year’s budget reflecting the country’s priorities in a region marked by geopolitical tensions. ISTANBUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the opposition CHP party headquarters on Tuesday, the first time in 18 years, after his party’s dramatic defeat in the March local elections. Erdogan last visited the party in 2006 when he was prime minister. The one-and-a-half-hour meeting between Erdogan and CHP leader Ozgur Ozel in the capital Ankara comes more than a month after their first encounter in May. As a result of the local elections, Ozel’s CHP retained control of major cities including Istanbul and Ankara and expanded into some Anatolian provinces previously considered Erdogan territory. Erdogan has signalled “softening” in politics after the March vote observers called his worst defeat since his Islamic-rooted AKP party took power in 2002. Many blamed soaring inflation, currently at above 75 percent, and a crashing devalua-

next fiscal year is set at 1.7pc of GDP, maintaining the same proportion of the national pie as last year. Meanwhile, the proposed expenditure constitutes 12.33pc of the projected current expenses.

This significant boost in defence spending is the second-largest in six years, just shy of the 18pc hike granted by the PML-N government in the final year of its 2013-18 tenure. This also marks the second consecutive year of elevated funding for the armed forces, following last year’s 15pc increase, signalling a shift away from the traditional 11pc annual raise — a trend witnessed over the past decade. Modi prevails over allies in cabinet line-up

NEW DELHI, June 11 (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has retained all key cabinet ministers in their portfolios in the new government, signalling that he still calls the shots despite having to rely on coalition allies for a majority in parliament.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell well short of the majority mark on its own in the election that ended this month, but the government announced there will be no change

in personnel at the four seniormost ministries - finance, home affairs, defence and foreign affairs. The party also retained other key ministries like commerce and agriculture.

Delhi was abuzz with talk of haggling by the allies for key portfolios in the lead-up to Modi taking office for a rare third straight term, and analysts said there could be some anger over the cabinet choices but no immediate fall-out. ”He has managed to prevail over his allies to keep all the important portfolios to demonstrate continuity, and they seem to have gone along,” said Tarun Basu, director of the New Delhi-based Society for Policy Studies think tank.

The mayor informed city council Monday night that Surrey is moving forward with what needs to be done to ensure residents are prioritized in the provincially legislated transition.

Locke made it clear she still believes Mounties are doing a good job, and that the switch to the Surrey Police Service would cost taxpayers more money. “I understand that the

Provincial legislation encourages greater density near transit hubs, raising fears of redevelopment evictions.

opposition councillors do not believe the province should contribute to the exorbitant and generational costs for our residents, but our council majority believes the province must take the responsibility for the solicitor general’s decision,” she said, referring to Mike Farnworth. T he mayor said the city plans to review a report about the projected costs of the transition from last month’s hearings in B.C. Supreme Court.

The court recently ruled that the provincial government had the authority to order Surrey to continue the transition away from the

Mounties. In a statement, Farnworth said he knows the people of Surrey want this transition to be over. “There has always been a spot at the table for the City of Surrey and I am glad to have them join in completing this transition to the Surrey Police Service,” reads the statement.

“I look forward to working with all parties to ensure a successful, safe, and quick transition. We are all committed to ensuring safe and effective policing in Surrey and across the province so that when people call 911, help is on the way.”.. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca/

New Westminster, B.C., council votes to boost renters’ protection

passed a motion to beef up renters’ protections after new provincial legislation on housing density raised fears that tenants in affordable homes could be forced out by redevelopment.

The motion by councillors Ruby Campbell and Nadine Nakagawa asks council to update its tenant protection and relocation policies, in light of legislation that encourages more dense housing around transit hubs.

Tenants’ advocates say many buildings in downtown New Westminster are located within 800 metres of a rapid transit station, the zone defined for such transit-oriented development — and this could pressure

owners of affordable housing to sell to developers incentivized by the legislation.

The advocates say if displaced renters are forced to look for a market-rate unit in New Westminster, they could be looking at a spike of about 40 to 50 per cent in rent, based on Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation data.

Gig workers in B.C. to be paid minimum of $20.88 an hour

Province says pay minimums for ‘engaged time’ will come into effect Sept. 3.

British Columbia has become the first province in Canada to provide a minimum wage and other protections for people who work through gig-based apps like Uber, DoorDash, Skip the Dishes and Lyft, according to B.C.’s Ministry of Labour.

Starting Sept. 3, anyone who accepts work through these and other gig-based apps, such as ride-hailing and delivery services, must receive $20.88 an hour from the time they accept an assignment to the time it is completed, the province says.

Under the new rules, this is known as “engaged time.” The pay standards are not applied to time spent waiting between jobs. The $20.88 figure is 20 per cent higher than

B.C.’s minimum wage of $17.40 an hour in order to address the gaps between gigs, the government says. Like the minimum wage, it will be adjusted annually to keep up with inflation. Tips from people receiving the service do not count toward the earnings, and platforms will be required to pay any gaps in earnings that impact workers.

“Too many workers in this industry are putting in long hours and being paid less than the minimum wage,” Janet Routledge, the parliamentary secretary for labour, said in a release. “At the end of a shift, after paying their vehicle expenses, these workers are barely ahead of where they started. The new protections are going to change that.”

The change is being introduced after the province held a series of meetings with gig

workers across B.C. to hear about their experiences and concerns — and after several gig workers threatened to strike if improvements weren’t made.

The government says it also consulted with the platforms behind the services, as well as business and labour associations and members of the public. The new rules represent “balanced solutions” that will keep app-based services in B.C. while providing better protections for workers, the province says. The B.C. government estimates there are about 11,000 ride-hailing drivers and 35,000 delivery workers in the province. According to a March report from Statistics Canada, approximately 3.6 per cent of workers between the ages of 15 and 69 took on gig work as their main job.

B.C. United missteps divide Muslim community, strategist claims

Party dropped Asad Gondal following online backlash to his previous Gaza, LGBTQ comments. By:

A former B.C. United strategist says the party made a major misstep by tapping, then dropping, the head of the B.C. Muslim Association as a candidate in a key Surrey riding. Asad Gondal was dropped by B.C. United three days after he was introduced by Leader Kevin Falcon as the candidate for Surrey North. It came after online backlash to some of Gondal’s previous statements on the war in Gaza and on LGTBQ issues.

Kareem Allam, a Vancouver-based political strategist who previously worked on Falcon’s leadership campaign in 2022, said the party viewed Gondal as a way to win support from the Muslim community.

However, Allam said Gondal’s “extreme” views do not reflect the entire community.

“It’s painful because, for moderate Muslims like me, we’re trying to break from that Sha-

ria law viewpoint.”

Now, by dropping Asad Gondal as a candidate, the party has angered and divided the Muslim community, Allam said.

It also raises questions about Falcon’s leadership and leaves the party scrambling to find a new candidate in Surrey North.

Gondal stood beside Falcon in Surrey on Sunday as he was introduced as a strong Muslim leader to represent the party.

Now, Falcon is distancing himself from Gondal, saying his views are inconsistent with the party’s values.

Gondal was among those who signed a letter sent by the B.C. Muslim Association in October, which called the war in Gaza a genocide. Falcon was under pressure from the Jewish community to remove Gondal for those comments.Falcon stood behind Gondal for three days, even as the issue exposed infighting within the party as B.C. United candidates pressured him to take ac-

tion. Caroline Elliott, B.C. United candidate for North Vancouver posted a letter to social media on Monday calling on the party to replace Gondal.“While I have long defended free speech … there is a role for political parties to select candidates based on the degree to which they align with the party’s principles,” said Elliott, the party’s former vice president and Falcon’s sister-in-law. Falcon was not available for an interview on Wednesday. He said in a statement that he terminated Gondal because his views did not align with the party’s values. Hamish Telford, a political scientist for the University of the Fraser Valley, said while Gondal represents an important minority community, his views were too out of line with B.C. United.“His view around the Israel conflict with Gaza … as well as his perspective on same-sex marriage, I think just made him too toxic for the party. Particularly when B.C. United’s strategy is to go after the B.C.

Conservatives on those sorts of issues. It was inevitable that Mr. Gondal was going to be a sacrificial lamb here.”

This is the first candidate that B.C. United has had to drop. It leaves the party scrambling for a new candidate for Surrey North four months before the provincial election. Green leader Elizabeth May says there’s no list of disloyal current MPs in unredacted NSICOP report

May says she was ‘relieved’ after reading top-secret information.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May says she’s read the original version of a highlypublicized intelligence watchdog’s report on foreign interference and she doesn’t believe any of her House of Commons colleagues knowingly betrayed their country.

“There is no list of MPs who have shown disloyalty to Canada,” she said. “I am vastly relieved.” Last week, the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP), a cross-party committee of MPs and senators with top security clearances, released a heavily redacted document alleging some parliamentarians have ac-

tively helped foreign governments meddle in Canadian politics.

The report said some Parliamentarians are, in the words of the intelligence services, “semi-witting or witting participants in the efforts of foreign states to interfere in our politics.” May has a top security clearance allowing her to see classified intelligence and was granted access to the unredacted version of NSICOP Monday night. She said reactions to the report since it was tabled last week have triggered a “totally understandable media firestorm, which in my view is overblown.” May described the contents of the report as “not as bad as a John le Carré novel but a bit more worrying than Miss Marple.” “So I am very glad I read the

full report. I am very comfortable sitting with my colleagues,” said the veteran parliamentarian. The redacted NSICOP report described what it called “particularly concerning” behaviour by some parliamentarians.

For example, the report said some elected officials “began wittingly assisting foreign state actors soon after their election.” The report said unnamed members of Parliament worked to influence their colleagues on India’s behalf and proactively provided confidential information to Indian officials.

May said that case study involved people not currently serving in Parliament.

“You couldn’t find a single name of a single member of Parliament currently serving who had significance intelligence, or any

Poilievre says Tories will vote against capital gains tax hike,

‘We’re stepping up for Canadians. They’re stepping up for the rich,’ Trudeau says of Conservatives.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Tuesday his party will oppose the government’s proposed capital gains inclusion rate increase — a tax hike that is projected to

pull in roughly $19 billion in new revenue. Weeks after the budget was tabled, Poilievre finally made his position known when he stood in the House of Commons to blast the Liberals’ plan and their so-called “high tax agenda.” Poilievre’s team also released a 15-minute social media video narrated by the leader to explain why the party is taking a stand against a policy that disproportionately affects wealthy people and big corporations. “Businesses, jobs, doctors and food production will leave Canada,” Poilievre says in the video. The government has tabled legislation to increase the capital gains inclusion rate from one-half to two-thirds on capital gains above $250,000 per year for individuals, and on all capital gains realized by corporations and trusts. Poilievre said

there could be damaging consequences to the policy. He claimed the tax increase will worsen the country’s family doctor shortage because it will levy higher taxes on a physician’s retirement savings — possibly driving these doctors to retire now or move their practices abroad.

The Canadian Medical Association has steadfastly opposed the inclusion rate increase, saying the tax hike will make primary care worse in a country where 6.5 million people already don’t have access to a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Poilievre also said some farmers could be on the hook for higher taxes when they sell a family farm.

The Grain Growers of Canada has estimated the inclusion rate increase will raise the average tax paid by some of its members by

Here’s how would-be homebuyers are responding to the Bank of Canada rate cut

The first interest rate cut from the Bank of Canada in more than four years will not be enough to help most prospective homebuyers feeling sidelined by high borrowing costs, new polling suggests.

The Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News after the Bank of Canada’s 25-basis-point rate cut on June 5 shows pessimism about housing affordability persists. “What Canadians are saying to us here is, 25 basis points is just a drop in the ocean,” says Sean Simpson, senior vice-president at Ipsos Global Affairs. The central bank’s policy rate is a key input into housing costs, affecting both the size of mortgage Canadi-

Just over six in 10 respondents (63 per cent) to the polls said they’ll remain on the sidelines of the housing market due to high interest rates. More than 1,000 Canadians aged 18 and older were interviewed online between June 7-10.

Among those who don’t own a home, some six per cent said interest rates would have to drop by less than one percentage point for them to consider buying a property. One in four said they’d need to see cuts of between one and 3.99 percentage points to get into the market, while 10 per cent said they needed steeper drops to make home owner-

Simpson tells Global News the quarterpercentage point drop might be a “good start,” but Canadians are feeling like there’s a long way to go before housing affordability improves for most. “The reaction from Canadians is, ‘Nice try. Keep going, Bank of Canada,’” he says. Some 45 per cent of respondents maintain that they won’t be able to afford a home no matter how much interest rates drop.

Most Canadians (78 per cent) indicated that owning a home in Canada is now only for the rich, a slight decrease from the 80 per cent who said as much in similar polling from April.

toward parents, in the Glorious Qur’ân, is mentioned next to the commandment to believe in One God.

In other words, everyday is a Father’s Day and Mother’s Day in Islam and therefore should be celebrated as such.

The following verses of the Noble Qur’ân and the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) highlight the high status given to parents in Islam.

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour. And out of kindness lower to them the wing of humility and say: ‘My Lord! Bestow on them Thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood.”(Qur’an 17:23)

Abdullah ibn ‘Umar narrates that the Proph-

Bahys ibn Hakim said that he heard from his grandfather, that he had asked the Prophet, ‘Who should I do a good to? The Prophet replied, Your mother. His grandfather once more asked the Prophet , ‘Who should I do a good to? The Prophet said, ‘Your mother’ His grandfather repeated the question a third time. The Prophet said, ‘Your mother’ After repeating the question for the fourth time, the Prophet replied, Then your father and then in order, your relatives.

What Is Dementia?

Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia.

About dementia

What is dementia? Causes, symptoms and diagnosis. Dementia is an umbrella term for loss of memory and other abilities.Dementia is not a single disease. It’s an overall term to describe a collection of symptoms that one may experience if they are living with a variety of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease. Diseases grouped under the general term “dementia” are caused by abnormal brain changes. Dementia symptoms trigger a decline in thinking skills, also known as cognitive abilities, severe enough to impair daily life and independent function. They also affect behavior, feelings and relationships. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80% of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs because of microscopic bleeding and blood vessel blockage in the brain, is the second most common cause of dementia. Those who experience the brain changes of multiple types of dementia simultaneously have mixed dementia. There are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of cognitive impairment but that aren’t dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies.

Dementia is often incorrectly referred to as “senility” or “senile dementia,” which reflects the formerly widespread but incorrect belief that serious mental decline is a normal part of aging.

Symptoms and signs of dementia Signs of dementia can vary greatly. Examples include problems with:

In 2023, significant transformation in enterprise technology had a profound impact on global and regional organisations. Forwardthinking businesses increasingly embraced emerging technologies like AI, cloud, blockchain, and 5G to future-proof their operations in a rapidly evolving landscape. It was in this dynamic environment that e& enterprise took bold, strategic steps to not only ride the cresting wave of change but also to shape the future of various industries. • Short-term memory.

• Keeping track of a purse or wallet.

• Paying bills.

• Planning and preparing meals.

• Remembering appointments.

• Traveling out of the neighborhood. Dementia symptoms are progressive, which means that the signs of cognitive impairment start out slowly and gradually get worse over time, leading to dementia. If you or someone you know is experiencing memory difficulties or other changes in thinking skills, don’t ignore them. See a doctor soon to determine the cause. Professional evaluation may detect a treatable condition. And even if symptoms suggest dementia, early diagnosis allows a person to get the maximum benefit from available treatments and provides an opportunity to volunteer for clinical trials or studies. It also provides time to plan for the future.

Causes

Dementia is caused by a variety of diseases that cause damage to brain cells. This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other. When brain cells cannot communicate normally, thinking, behavior and feelings can be affected. The brain has many distinct regions, each of which is responsible for different functions (for example, memory, judgment and movement). When cells in a particular region are damaged, that region cannot carry out its functions normally.

Different types of dementia are associated with particular types of brain cell damage in particular regions of the brain. For example, in Alzheimer’s disease, high levels of certain proteins inside and outside brain cells make it hard for brain cells to stay healthy and to communicate with each other. The brain region called the hippocampus is the center of learning and memory in the brain, and the

brain cells in this region are often the first to be damaged. That’s why memory loss is often one of the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer’s. While most changes in the brain that cause dementia are permanent and worsen over time, thinking and memory problems caused by the following conditions may improve when the condition is treated or addressed:

• Depression.

• Medication side effects.

• Excess use of alcohol.

• Thyroid problems.

• Vitamin deficiencies.

Diagnosis of dementia

There is no one test to determine if someone has dementia. Doctors diagnose Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia based on a careful medical history, a physical examination, laboratory tests, and the characteristic changes in thinking, day-to-day function and behavior associated with each type. Doctors can determine that a person has dementia with a high level of certainty. But it’s harder to determine the exact type of dementia because the symptoms and brain changes of different dementias can overlap. In some cases, a doctor may diagnose “dementia” and not specify a type. If this occurs, it may be necessary to see a specialist such as a neurologist, psychiatrist, psychologist or geriatrician.

Dementia treatment and care

Treatment of dementia depends on its cause. In the case of most progressive dementias, including Alzheimer’s disease, there is no cure, but two treatments — aducanumab (Aduhelm®) and lecanemab (Leqembi®) — demonstrate that removing beta-amyloid, one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease, from the brain reduces cognitive and functional decline in people living with early Alzheimer’s. (Aducanumab will be discontinued on Nov. 1, 2024. Please connect with

your provider on treatment options.) Others can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. The same medications used to treat Alzheimer’s are among the drugs sometimes prescribed to help with symptoms of other types of dementias. Non-drug therapies can also alleviate some symptoms of dementia.

Ultimately, the path to effective new treatments for dementia is through increased research funding and increased participation in clinical studies. Right now, volunteers are urgently needed to participate in clinical studies and trials about Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Dementia risk and prevention

Some risk factors for dementia, such as age and genetics, cannot be changed. But researchers continue to explore the impact of other risk factors on brain health and prevention of dementia.

Research reported at the 2019 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference® suggests that adopting multiple healthy lifestyle choices, including healthy diet, not smoking, regular exercise and cognitive stimulation, may decrease the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Tawakkul and Sacrifice in Islam

As we enter the blessed month of Zulhijjah, our hearts turn to the theme of ‘Sacrifice’. Beyond the symbolism of Prophet Ibrahim’s (a.s) sacrifice, we are reminded of the profound concept of Tawakkul (trust in God).

Tawakkul is the act of placing complete trust in Allah’s wisdom, finding peace in His perfect plan. It is a source of strength and solace, especially during times of uncertainty. Sacrifice, exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim’s

(a.s) willingness to offer his son Ismail (a.s), symbolizes our readiness to give up worldly attachments for Allah’s pleasure. This commitment is commemorated during Eid al-Adha, where Muslims perform Qurbani (sacrifice) as a demonstration of devotion and gratitude. While distinct, Tawakkul and sacrifice are deeply intertwined. True sacrifice requires Tawakkul – a trust that our sacrifices are recognized and rewarded by Allah. It is

TAKMIL Fundraiser Dinner Raises $97K for Pakistani Educational Institutions

On June 2, a fundraiser dinner was organized for Takmil Foundation by its co-founder Dr. Zanib Khan from Alberta and Mr. Naveed Waraich from PCCABC, along with their volunteer team . This event was part of the TAKMIL fundraising North America Tour to support the charity in providing education to out-of-school children in remote and rural communities in Pakistan with no or limited access to education. Ms. Rabia Desthagir and Mr. Tauseef Waraich served as the masters of ceremonies. Dr. Zanib Khan highlighted TAKMIL Foundation’s achievements in the field of education in Pakistan in her presentation and how TAKMIL is using technology aligned with

SURREY, B.C. (June 9, 2024) – BC United is proud to announce Asad Gondal as its MLA candidate for Surrey North in the upcoming provincial election. Gondal, a seasoned businessman and community leader, brings over 25 years of entrepreneurial success and a deep commitment to serving his community to his candidacy.

national standards to bridge educational gaps and empower marginalized communities. In Pakistan, 26.2 million children are deprived of educational opportunities, making it the country with the highest rate of outof-school children in the world. A staggering 60% of these children are at the primary and middle education levels, within the critical age range of 5 to 16 years. This persistent challenge underscores a significant educational dilemma for Pakistan, with a substantial portion of these children belonging to rural regions. TAKMIL’s primary focus is on addressing the educational needs of the 77% of out-of-school children living in rural and remote underprivileged communities where public and private schools are absent. These communities lack basic resources such as

Gondal’s candidacy represents a transformative opportunity for Surrey North. His dedication to excellence, community cohesion and multiculturalism will undoubtedly pave the way for a brighter future for the community. As BC United gears up for the upcoming election, the party continues to attract top-tier candidates, all driven by a shared commitment to building a better future for the next generation. By: Adam Wilson Director of Communications BC United

NEW - Asad Gondal has been dropped as a BC United candidate in Surrey North.

As leader I have made a particular effort to fulfill my commitment to make this a party of diversity including successfully recruiting more women, youth and people from diverse backgrounds. It was under that approach that I recruited Asad Gondal to be our candidate for Surrey North.

Prior to Mr. Gondal’s nomination, he shared opinions that are inconsistent with our Party’s views on the situation in Gaza, and inconsistent with our support for B.C.’s LGBTQ+ community. He shared those opinions in correspondence he signed on behalf of the BCMA, while representing his community.

In light of those statements, I spoke with Mr.

Asalamualaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu,

I pray this message finds you all in good health and Islamic spirit. Following yesterday’s message I wanted to give an update to the community and my statement regarding what has happened.

The past few days have been profoundly challenging for my family and me. Being marginalized and ridiculed for my beliefs is something I never anticipated. I embarked on this journey with the purest of intentions, yet I have found myself reduced to a caricature of my faith and values. Today, I want to

share with my community the truth behind the termination of my candidacy with BC United.

My candidacy for BC United has been terminated by the party. This decision, however painful, is all by Allah’s will. We plan, and then Allah plans, and surely He is the best of Planners. There must be Khair in this decision, and I am content with whatever my Lord ordains.

The party demanded that I retract my previous statements condemning the cruelty and genocide in Gaza. I refused, standing firm in my conviction that speaking out against injustice is a moral imperative. They also pressured me to change my views

The rally began at 2 pm at South Surrey Park & Ride and concluded at Holland Park, Surrey, where participants chanted slogans in solidarity with Imran Khan. Speakers, including Saif Pannu, Fahim Shah, Ameen Khan, and Anila Shoaib, addressed the crowd, demanding the release of Khan and thousands of other political leaders and workers detained on baseless charges.

Gondal today to confirm his willingness to adhere to our Party’s long-standing position on these issues. However, he informed me that he cannot change his values and principles, including disavowing earlier statements made while President of the BCMA.

- Kevin Falcon, Leader of the Official Opposition and BC Unitedunited in their support for Imran Khan.

Given Mr. Gondal’s decision to not adhere by our Party’s position on these policies, I have terminated his candidacy effective immediately. I accept full responsibility and apologize to anyone who may have been offended.

on the LGBTQ community. My stance was never about hate or discrimination; it was rooted in a concern for our children. The SOGI curriculum being introduced in elementary schools without parental consent was a policy our community opposed. I stood against this policy of parental exclusion, reflecting the concerns of many parents who believe in the importance of family involvement in education.

I will never compromise my core values for anyone, especially not for political expediency. My principles and my Islamic beliefs are not negotiable.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported me, especially

This event marks the fourth rally of its kind in BC, with previous protests organized by PTI BC since May 2022.

Similar protests took place in New York, Dallas, LA, Toronto, London, and Paris on the same day.

“The fascist regime of Shahbaz Sharif and the establishment led by General Asim Munir and Qazi Faez Asia must release

during these trying times. Your solidarity has been a beacon of hope and strength.

I am particularly grateful to the brothers and sisters from the Punjabi (Sikh), Afghan, Indian, Bengali, and Caucasian communities. Your unwavering support and presence have meant more to me than words can express. You stood by me when I needed it most, and for that, I pray Allah blesses you abundantly. We live in perilous times, where those who preach inclusivity often practice exclusion and discrimination. It is imperative that we remain steadfast in our principles and continue to advocate for justice and equity.

Imran Khan and other political leaders and workers,” emphasized the speakers. The Pakistani-Canadian community in BC, numbering around 20,000, has been deeply disturbed by the events in their home country and stands united in their support for Imran Khan.

Anchorperson Imran riaz handed over to police in fraud case

A Lahore district court on Wednesday remanded anchorperson Imran Riaz, who was arrested last night, in police custody for one day in a fraud case.

Riaz was taken into custody at the Allama Iqbal International Airport late Tuesday night while he was departing for Saudi Arabia for Haj. The visuals of the arrest, which showed the journalist clad in an ihram, went viral on social media.

He was later presented before Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Kamran Zafar by the Nishtar Town police. According to the first information report (FIR), a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, Riaz has been accused of abuse of trust. It invoked Sec-

tion 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

During the hearing today, the police sought seven-day physical remand of Riaz. The prosecutor stated that the anchorperson had borrowed Rs0.25 billion from the complainant but he never returned the money.

Meanwhile, Riaz’s lawyer, Mian Ashfaq, alleged that the case against his client was fake. “The complainant was an agent at Maryam Nawaz’s polling station,” he contended.

After hearing the arguments from both sides, the judge reserved the verdict. Later, he granted police one-day physical remand of Riaz.

Arrest and rearrest

Imran Riaz — a YouTuber and television anchor — was arrested two days after violent protests broke out across the country following PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9. He was last known to be taken to Cantt police station after his arrest and later to the Sialkot prison. On May 15, a law officer had told the Lahore High Court that the anchorperson was released from jail after taking an undertaking in writing. His whereabouts, however, remained unknown. Subsequently, a first information report (FIR) of Riaz’s alleged abduction was registered with Sialkot Civil Lines police on May

ruling party blindsided by PPP in maiden budget session

ISLAMABAD: Though loud and traditional protests by the opposition led by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) failed to derail the maiden budget presentation by the coalition government led by the PML-N, it was the eleventh-hour move by its key ally PPP, which took the wind out of the ruling party’s sails, forcing it to delay the proceedings for nearly two hours. According to the PPP, the decision to initially boycott the budget session was made due to an alleged violation of a power-sharing agreement it had reached

with the PML-N after the Feb polls. It also claimed the PML-N bypassed it in the budget preparation. However, it agreed to have a “token representation” after a last-minute intervention by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who assured the PPP that its grievances would be addressed. As this drama unfolded, the confident finance minister remained standing for nearly 20 minutes ready to deliver his budget speech even before the session could formally kick-start. But the SIC members did not require the start of formal

Pakistani court grants FIA two-day remand

Burney was arrested in Karachi on Wednesday after his return to country from United States Burney, associates accused of smuggling and illegally three children to the United States

KARACHI: A local court in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi on Thursday granted a two-day physical remand of rights activist Sarim Burney to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), a day after he was arrested on charges of human trafficking and illegally sending children to the United States.

Burney, a prominent rights activist in Pakistan, was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate

Khaleeque Zaman in Karachi a day after he was arrested on his return to Pakistan from the US. According to the FIA, Burney had been arrested over human trafficking charges levelled against him by US authorities. The Anti-Human Trafficking cell of the FIA had registered a case against Burney under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 109 (abetment) of the Pakistan Penal Code with Sections 3 (trafficking in persons), 4 (aggravating circumstances) and Section 5 (abetment and criminal conspiracy) of the Prevention of Trafficking in

proceedings to record their “protest” through loud slogans and desk-thumping. The session only started when Ishaq Dar led PPP leaders Khursheed Shah, Naveed Qamar, and Ijaz Jakharani into the hall.

Unlike past practice, the budget documents were not placed on the tables of the MNAs and they were told to collect them after the session from the legislation branch.

When contacted, a senior official of the NA Secretariat told Dawn that this step had been taken to prevent the members possibly using

Persons Act, 2018.

The social worker was arrested on charges of human trafficking which includes smuggling and illegally sending children to the US after American authorities filed a complaint against him, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said. “Sarim Burney and his associates Basalat Ali Khan, Humaira Naz and others, in collusion with each other knowingly and willfully gave false information, made misdeclaration as well as concealment of the facts before the Hon’ble Family Courts District East Karachi in the garb of illegal adoption and guardianship of three baby girls by using and providing fraudulent documents,” a copy of the complaint seen by Arab News said.

The complaint said the Sarim Burney Trust claimed the baby girls were orphans and had been found outside the gate of the trust. The trust had also claimed it tried its level best to find their parents but no person came forward to claim them.

The complaint said the suspects’ statements about the three girls were “contrary to the facts” and that the

T20 World Cup: Pakistan stay alive with 7-wicket win over Canada

Mohammad Rizwan and captain Babar Azam starred as Pakistan stayed alive at the T20 World Cup with a seven-wicket win over Canada on Tuesday.

Knowing defeat would condemn them to a shock first-round exit, Rizwan and Babar put on a match-winning second-wicket partnership of 63 as Pakistan reached their target of 107 with 15 balls to spare.

Opener Rizwan finished undefeated on 53 off 53 balls with two fours and a six for his 29th T20 international half-century while Babar made 33 off as many balls with one four a six.

Earlier, Pakistan restricted Canada to 1067 despite opener Aaron Johnson hitting his

sixth international fifty. Pakistan, the 2009 champions and runnersup in 2022, lost both their first two Group A fixtures. A stunning super-over humiliation at the hands of the United States was followed by a six-run loss to bitter rivals India in a game where they failed to chase down a modest 120-run target. Even a win on Tuesday at the same Nassau County International Stadium where they came up short against India may not be enough to secure a place in the second round Super Eights. Johnson demonstrated his attacking intent from the start, cracking successive boundaries off the first two balls he faced from

16 on the complaint of the anchorperson’s father, Muhammad Riaz. The FIR was registered against “unidentified persons” and police officials for allegedly kidnapping Riaz, invoking Section 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The journalist’s father had also filed a plea in the LHC for his recovery.

girls had been trafficked abroad “by way of adoption/guardianship.” Investigation Officer Chaudhry Bilal requested the judge to remand Burney for 14 days in police custody. The magistrate, after hearing the arguments, handed over the accused to the FIA on a two-day remand.

“Meanwhile, the court rejected Burney’s request to discharge him from the case,” the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said.

According to local media reports, Burney alleged that a campaign was being run against him, vowing not to let his arrest get in the way of his philanthropic activities.

Arab News contacted the US Consulate in Karachi for to get their version, who refused to respond to specific queries. “We are aware of reports regarding the arrest of Sarim Burney. This is an internal Pakistani judicial matter for Pakistan’s authorities to investigate,” Anastasia Kolivas, public diplomacy officer at the consulate, told Arab News. “We have been clear and consistent in calling for respect for the rule of law, and we will continue to do so.” Source:.arabnews.com/
