CHRISTY CLARK LEADS
B.C. LIBERALS TO SURPRISE MAJORITY
Christy Clark will head a majority B.C. Liberal government after leading her party to a stunning come-from-behind victory in British Columbia’s 40th provincial election. But Clark lost a tough fight to hold on to her seat in Vancouver-Point Grey, to high-profile NDP candidate David Eby by 785 votes. Despite the riding defeat Clark can still be premier, but it is expected she would seek a seat in a by-election in a safer Liberal riding. The last time a B.C. party leader became premier

but failed to win their seat was in 1924, when both Premier John Oliver and the Leader of the Opposition William John Bowser were defeated in the general election. The Liberals won 44.4 per cent of the popular vote and 50 Liberals were elected in the province’s 85 ridings, giving Clark one of the most remarkable political comebacks in the province’s history. Not only did Clark defy countless polls predicting her defeat, she increased her party’s majority in the legislature by five
seats and became the first woman to be elected premier in a general election in B.C. The NDP won 39.5 per cent of the popular vote, giving them 33 seats in the legislature, three fewer seats than they held before the election. NDP Leader Adrian Dix accepts defeat with 33 seats. Earlier, NDP Leader Adrian Dix conceded defeat in his speech, but said the party will continue to hold government accountable. Source: CBC News
Cyclone Mahasen started crossing Bangladesh’s low-lying coast on Thursday, bearing down on the ports of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar, as tens of thousands of people huddled in shelters from a storm which the United Nations says threatens 4.1 million people. Winds up to 100 kilometres an hour lashed the coast and whipped up waves, with an expected 2.1-metre storm surge and heavy rain expected to cause widespread flooding. “It started to cross and is approaching towards Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar coasts,” said a Bangladesh meteorological department official. The storm first hit Khepupara on Bangladesh’s southern coast and was tracking northeast towards the two ports on the eastern coastline near Myanmar. Eyewitnesses said lowlying coastal areas were covered in waist-deep water as the storm crossed and trees were uprooted and houses damaged. Two people were reported killed, one crushed by a falling tree and another as he made his way to a shelter. Bangladesh raised its storm warning to seven, on a scale with a maximum of 10, as Mahasen approached one of the poorest countries in Asia. The storm killed at least seven people and displaced 3,881 in Sri Lanka as it tracked across the Bay of Bengal towards Bangladesh. A boat carrying Rohingya Muslims in neighbouring Myanmar capsized at around midnight on Monday after hitting rocks off Pauktaw in Rakhine State while evacuating ahead of the storm. Official media said 42 people were rescued, but 58 were missing. “The government has ordered the evacuation of about one million people from 15 coastal districts,” said the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). “As per the latest storm trajectory, 4.1 million people have

Pakistan vote count shows big Sharif win Islamabad (AP)--The vote count from last weekend’s nationwide elections in Pakistan on Saturday indicates a big win for former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s party. Figures released by the country’s election commission, based on 254 of the 269 races where the counting has been completed, show Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-N party will likely get a majority in the national assembly, setting him up to be prime minister for the third time. As the new premier, the 63-year-old Sharif, a devout Muslim and a populist, is expected to supplant President Asif Ali Zardari as the international face of a nuclear power whose increasing instability and Islamic militant havens are a global concern, especially at a time when the West is looking to end the war in neighboring Afghanistan. Sharif’s party so far has won 123 of the 254 directly elected national assembly seats, the commission spokesman Khursheed Alam said.

Nawaz offers ‘friendly match’ to Imran Khan Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief and prime minister-in-waiting, Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday evening met his political foe at the hospital to soften up pre-election bitterness. Sharif presented a flower bouquet to Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital in Lahore. The cricket legend-turned politician had sustained injuries on his head and back when he fell off the lifter during a public rally in Lahore last week. Speaking to media representatives after the meeting, Nawaz Sharif said the meeting took place in “good environment.” “Hopefully he will resume his work soon. Thanks to God he is safe and well, and I’m happy he is recovering,” he said.“We both emphasized on forgetting all bitterness that existed among our ranks……I congratulated Mr Khan on bagging many seats in the elections,” said the PML-N chief. There should be a friendly cricket match between us now, said the joyful Nawaz. He said that he will meet the PTI chief
again once he recovers fully from his injuries. “We all want progress and prosperity of Pakistan.” On a query regarding JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s reservations on poll results, he said, “We respect mandate of all political parties and they should do the same.” Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz had issued sympathetic statements to their competitor in Punjab immediately following the incident. They prayed for swift recovery of Khan. The PML-N chief, in rare goodwill gesture, had also asked his party workers to immediately halt the media advertisements against Imran Khan. Sharif’s party had suspended its electioneering for a day as well.Despite bagging enough national and Punjab seats to form governments on his own, the PML-N chief had announced to accommodate all political forces including PTI and MQM for the larger interest of the country.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) provincial head, Ijaz Chaudhry on Tuesday announced parliamentary leader of PTI in Punjab assembly and vowed to submit a list of 20 constituencies to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Supreme Court (SC) where poll rigging allegedly took place. While addressing a press conference at PTI Punjab secretariat, Ijaz Chaudhry termed the current elections as one of the turning points in the history of PTI as it had emerged as the third largest party of Pakistan. PTI Punjab general secretary, Dr Yasmeen Rashid, Mian Mehmood ur Rasheed, Mian Aslam Iqbal and other office bearers were also present on the occasion. On selection of parliamentary leaders he said that all those party leaders who are not present in the conference were consulted on the selection of the parliamentary leadership of Punjab over the phone. Furthermore, Mian Mehmood ur Rasheed, newly-appointed parliamentary leader of Punjab said that he would justify the
trust and faith of party leadership. He further said that PTI would play a constructive role in the opposition for the betterment of the province. He added that other parties of Punjab would be taken onboard to form strong opposition in Punjab assembly. Dr Yasmeen Rashid criticised the administration and police and said that they were pro PML-N and supported the rigging. She added that people of those constituencies are protesting on their own and PTI has no plan for point scoring on this issue. “But we are looking forward to purify the electoral procedure in the country and would file the names of the constituencies to election commission and supreme court of Pakistan on this very issue,” she said. Rashid further said that PML-N leadership violated the Election Commission’s code of conduct by addressing the media before the declaration of results. PTI also provided media persons the list of the constituencies, where they claimed poll rigging had taken place. Source: Daily Times

4 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Report: Canada could see indigenous uprising Rajab 7, 1434 May 17, 2013
Living standards for indigenous people on par with “third world” countries, buttressed by a large population of unemployed young men in a “warrior cohort”, and easy-to-target economic infrastructure, all mean Canada has conditions for a potential indigenous “insurgency”. That’s according to a new report penned by a former Canadian military officer for the MacDonald Laurier Institute, a think-tank supported by corporate executives. “For many Aboriginal people in Canada, but especially for First Nations women and children, life on-reserve is dreary, dark and dangerous,” wrote Douglas Bland in the report, Canada and the first Nations: Cooperation or Conflict?
“Social fractionalisation significantly increases the risk of social conflict. The phenomenon provides motives for an insurgency,” read the report, issued in May. The Queen’s University professor emeritus and 30-year military veteran have worried the Canadian establishment, especially in light of indigenousled protests associated with the Idle No More movement, and Canada’s increasing dependence on natural resource extraction. In November, Paul Martin, Canada’s former prime minister and a business tycoon, echoed Alfred’s comments, albeit in a softer tone. “We have never admitted to ourselves that we were, and still are, a colonial power,” he said. One of the world’s most developed
countries, Canada is home to about 1.2 million indigenous people out of a population of 34.5 million. The indigenous population is rising faster than other demographic groups, despite drastically higher rates of poverty, incarceration and substance abuse. If indigenous Canadians were ranked as a country according to the United Nations Human Development Index, which measures living standards and life expectancy, they would have social outcomes comparable to residents of Kazakhstan and Albania. Across Canada’s prairies, the heartland of the country’s agricultural industry and a centre for mining, about 42 percent of the indigenous population will be under the age of 30 by 2016, more than twice the youth rate in the non-indigenous community. “The fact that Canada’s natural wealth flows unfairly from Aboriginal lands and peoples to non-Aboriginal Canadians is a long-standing and justifiable grievance,” the report said. A large number of poorly educated, unemployed young men - a “warrior cohort”, as
Rescue operation after Myanmar boats sink
Boats carrying hundreds Rohingya Muslims who were evacuating ahead of a storm have capsized off western Myanmar, killing many of those on board, UN officials have said. Eight bodies were recovered from one capsized vessel, which was thought to have been carrying about 100 people, many of whom are still missing, feared dead. The vessels hit trouble on Monday night after leaving Pauktaw township in Rakhine state, said a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). “They were travelling to another camp ahead of the cyclone,” the spokeswoman added. Kirsten Mildren, who works for the same UN agency, told Al Jazeera there was only one confirmed survivor from Monday’s accident. The victims were trying to escape Cyclone Mahasen which is expected on Thursday and Friday. The UN has warned the storm could lead to “life-threatening conditions”. Myanmar state television said on Monday that thousands ofpeople displaced by communal violence last year had been evacuated from makeshift camps to safer ground in the event of the storm. The report said authorities had moved 5,158 people from low-lying camps in the Rakhine state capital, Sittwe, to safer shelter. But human rights
groups said that the government has been too slow to act, and ignored earlier warnings to provide shelter to displaced people. “The Burmese government didn’t heed the repeated warnings by governments and humanitarian aid groups to relocate displaced Muslims ahead of Burma’s rainy season,” said Brad Adams, Human Rights Watch Asia director. “If the government fails to evacuate those at risk, any disaster that results will not be natural, but man-made,” he said. The state television report said displaced people were moved in 10 other townships in western Myanmar where communal violence flared last year between Muslims and Buddhists, taking hundreds of lives and leaving more than 100,000 people homeless. It did not give the number of people evacuated in those locations. Myanmar is a predominantly Bud-
dhist country but about 5 percent of its 60 million people are Muslims. They face a growing anti-Muslim campaign led by radical Buddhist monks. Cyclone Mahasen is expected to hit neighbouring Bangladesh on Thursday or Friday. Images taken by NASA’s Aqua satellite on Monday showed the storm’s centre northeast of Sri Lanka with it packing winds of up to 50 knots (92km per hour). Those winds are expected to increase to 130km per hour as the storm moves north. The space agency said it “sees a strengthening” of the storm and forecasts an upgrade to a Cyclone 1 level by Wednesday. “The current forecast track ... takes the centre of Mahasen just north of Chittagong early on May 17 and into northern Burma,” it said. Officials in the Bangladeshi town of Cox’s Bazar near the border with Myanmar said medical teams with as many as 30,000 Red Crescent volunteers were being formed. In eastern India, authorities put 10 coastal districts on alert. In 2008, Cyclone Nargis killed more than 130,000 people in Myanmar. In 2007, Cyclone Sidr, packing winds of up to 240km per hour, left at least 3,500 people dead, levelled thousands of homes and forced the evacuation of 650,000 villagers in Bangladesh’s southwest coast. Bland put it - provide fertile recruits for militant groups, the report says. Using a formula first developed by researchers at Oxford University, Bland argued that the “feasibility” of unrest, rather than just root causes, could determine outcomes. Most of Canada’s resource industries, including mines, dams and oil facilities, are located on land claimed by indigenous people - and attacking such facilities is easily feasible, the report said. Comprising about four percent of the population, indigenous people make up 23 percent of Canada’s prisoners, a 43 percent increase during the five years prior to 2013, according to a government report released in March. There is near universal acceptance that the status quo is unacceptable, but across Canada’s coffee shops, factories - and even within the MacDonald Laurier Institute - there is no consensus on the causes. In a separate report for the institute, former government senior economic adviser Brian Lee Crowley and professor Kevin Coates paint an optimistic picture, far removed from
fears over blockades, sabotage or a full-blown uprising. “Blockades may be news,” they wrote, “but the new joint ventures, long-term training programmes and successful indigenous businesses are what will reshape our common future.” They argue that indigenous communities are ready to hit a “sweet spot” as a series of Supreme Court decisions on long-standing treaties will give them a larger stake - environmental and financial - in natural resource development. Other intellectuals, however, say support for mines, dams and other megaprojects with large environmental costs won’t help get people out of poverty, and are contrary to indigenous support for sustainability. Especially in northern Canada, many indigenous people still depend on hunting and trapping for their food, and Kulchyski says this way of life should be preserved through land management deals, the sale of meat and eco-tourism projects rather than large-scale developments - which often imperil the land. Retailers back Bangladesh factory safety pact Four of the world’s largest retailers have agreed to a pact to improve safety at some of Bangladesh’s garment factories after a building collapse that killed more than 1,100 workers in the country last month. H&M, C&A, Primark and the owners of Zara have agreed to monitor suppliers and pay for repairs following the worst industrial disaster in the South Asian country. The agreement on fire and building safety, which is being led by the International Labour Organisation, trade unions and other lobby groups, has been under negotiation since the Rana Plaza building located near the capital, Dhaka, collapsed on April 24. It comes as the three week search for survivors ended on Monday and Bangladesh’s cabinet paved the way for parliament to allow garment workers to form trade unions without prior approval from factory owners. Deadly incidents at factories, including a fire in November that killed 112 people, has focused global attention on safety standards in Bangladesh’s booming garment industry, the world’s biggest exporter of clothing after China. At least eight people were killed last week when a fire swept through a garment factory in an industrial district of the capital. German retailer Tchibo also agreed to the plan, according to IndustriALL Global Union, which has been driving the negotiations to get brands to sign up for the agreement.IndustriALL said it hoped for several more brands to join by a May 15 deadline set after talks in Germany last month with major brands and retailers. IndustriALL declined to comment before Wednesday’s deadline on a total financial commitment for the project, but said “it is a substantial amount, enough to make a difference”. Swedish fashion retailer H&M, which is a major purchaser of garments from Bangladesh but did not use any of the suppliers operating in the collapsed factory, said the five-year accord would add to its already strict requirements for suppliers. “We hope for a broad coalition of signatures in order for the agreement to work effectively on ground,” H&M head of sustainability Helena Helmersson said in a statement. The company said that the agreement would also need to align with an action plan agreed by the Bangladesh government, industry associations and trade unions to reach all 5,000 factories. It declined to give details of any financial commitment. PVH, whose brands include Calvin Klein, said it would commit up to $2.5m to underwrite the programme set to be financed by the participating companies. PVH was the first company to agree to a memorandum of understanding on Bangladeshi safety issues last year, followed by Germany’s Tchibo. Britain’s Tesco said it would create a fund of $1.53m to support improvements across the industry in Bangladesh, among other efforts it will pursue. “Tesco did not use factories in the Rana Plaza building, but we are all responsible for ensuring we prevent another tragedy,” Tesco Group Commercial Director Kevin Grace said in a statement. A spokesman for IndustriALL said the final draft of the deal would only be published on Wednesday but included strengthening workers’ rights, training and brands making a financial commitment relative to the size of their business in Bangladesh. Other big brands involved in the fire and building safety talks include Wal-Mart and Gap Inc, which said last year it would launch its own safety programme. Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, did not say whether it plans to sign the accord. The company said that it is working with various parties “to come to an appropriate resolution” and “develop broad-based solutions for the industry”. Source: Al-Jazeera

Nigeria president declares state of emergency Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian president, has imposed a “state of emergency” in three states in an attempt to curb the increasingly violent attacks by armed group Boko Haram, saying the level of violence called for “extraordinary measures”. The decision comes after a spate of attacks on security forces and government targets by Boko Haram in its northeast stronghold this month. In a televised statement on Tuesday, the president said, “I hereby declare a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.” Jonathan said more troops would “immediately” be deployed to the areas. He made a similar move in January 2012 following a spate of
Boko Haram attacks, but in that case the decree only applied to specific local government areas in four states. Al Jazeera’s Yvonne Ndege, reporting from Nigeria said the president’s declaration was being made “to restore public safety and security”. “This move does to some extent fly in the face of much of the rhetoric we have been hearing about the government’s efforts to broker a peace deal with Boko Haram,” our correspondent said. “They have been saying in the last few weeks that things are going well, that many Boko Haram fighters have surrendered, but clearly this decision to declare a state of emergency in these states and to send
more troops there does seem to bring the success that the government have been talking about in to question.” In seeking to impose the measure across a whole state, Jonathan must first secure the approval of Nigerian legislators, which he pledged to do. The enhanced powers that come with the measure are unclear. When former president Olusegun Obasanjo invoked the measure twice in 2004 and 2006, he removed democratically elected governors and installed appointed administrators to manage the states, both former military officers. Jonathan vowed that he would not employ that measure. “The governors and other political office holders
in the affected states will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities,” he said. Boko Haram, an armed group, has been fighting the government aimed at creating an Islamic state in the country’s mainly Muslim north, and the resulting violence has cost about 3,600 lives since 2009, including killings by the security forces. But a series of recent brazen attacks have raised concerns that fighters have become emboldened, with the Nigerian president saying that the latest violence amounted to “a declaration of war”. EU raids oil majors in ‘price fixing’ probe Europe is investigating suspected manipulation of global oil markets, staging raids at some of the world’s biggest energy companies to gather evidence of possible collusion. Three oil giants – Royal Dutch Shell PLC, BP PLC and Norway’s state-controlled Statoil ASA – on Tuesday confirmed that their offices had been raided in connection with the probe. Oil-pricing agency Platts is also under investigation. Platts, a unit of McGraw Hill Financial Inc., is the custodian of the Brent crude contract, the de facto world benchmark for oil prices and base for the hundreds of billions of dollars of futures contracts that trade off it. Crude oil prices in turn influence the price of gasoline and other fuels. The European Commission, the executive arm of the 27-country European Union, confirmed the probe but did not identify the companies by name. Nor did it specify how many companies were under investigation, leading to speculation that the probe may widen. The investigation shows regulators remain concerned that global markets can be susceptible to manipulation even in an era of electronic trading and apparent price transparency. The oil investigation comes only a year after some of the world’s biggest banks were hit with enormous fines for rigging interest rate benchmarks. “Officials carried out unannounced inspections at the premises of several companies active in and providing
services to the crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels sectors,” the EC said. “The commission has concerns that the companies may have colluded in reporting distorted prices to a price-reporting agency to manipulate the published prices for a number of oil and biofuel products.” The EC added that it “has concerns that the companies may have prevented others from participating in the price assessment process, with a view to distorting published prices.” The EC implied that every consumer in Europe would be a victim if the price manipulation allegations are proven: “Even small distortions of assessed prices may have a huge impact on prices … potentially harming final consumers.” In London, David Nicholas, spokesman for BP, which is co-operating with the investigation, said he did not know the investigation’s scope. The EC probe came seven months after Oil Trading SA, the Swiss trading arm of Total of France, one of the world’s biggest oil companies, complained to regulators that “several times a year, estimates of market prices on key [energy] indices … are out of line with our experience of the day,” according to the Financial Times. Two months later, EU justice ministers agreed on an approach to harmonize criminal sanctions for market abuse in financial instruments, including commodities and commodity derivatives. The EU took a hard stance on market manipulation in the
wake of the Libor – London interbank offered rate – scandal earlier last year, in which several international banks allegedly manipulated the Libor rate by submitting false data on interest rates. Last year, Barclays and UBS collectively paid almost $2-billion (U.S.) of fines in Britain and the United States for the attempted manipulation of Libor, which is used as a reference point to price everything from mortgages to student loans on both sides of the Atlantic. The Brent index compiled by Platts is one of the world’s two main oil benchmarks and is based on output from the North Sea, whose production is declining. (In an effort to keep Brent relevant, Platts has been shunting other oil sources into the calculation.) Futures and options based on Brent are traded on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). Those based on the larger West Texas intermediate (WTI) index are traded on the CME Group’s New York Mercantile Exchange market. Because Brent contracts are less liquid, traders say they can be more readily manipulated than WTI contracts. The EC probe may be examining whether allegedly distorted pricing on the Brent index warped the value of futures contracts on ICE. The CME Group had no comment about the EC investigation. The EC probe is unlikely to have an immediate impact on oil prices, but it exposes the thorny problems of a less actively traded market setting prices for a major world
commodity, said Phil Flynn, futures account executive with Price Futures Group in Chicago. “It seems to be a situation where you don’t have a very liquid market and you depend on these agencies and the energy companies to come up with these prices,” Mr. Flynn said. He said the long-term effect could be the return of the WTI contract as the dominant world oil benchmark, especially with U.S. unconventional crude production from regions such as the North Dakota Bakken surging. The International Energy Agency predicted last year that the United States could overtake Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world’s top oil producer by 2017. The three oil companies known to be under investigation are all players in the North Sea, the source of the Brent crude. It is not known whether other oil companies active in the region are involved in the probe. Calgarybased Nexen Inc., which is now controlled by Beijing, said it has not been approached, spokeswoman Patti Lewis said in a statement. Talisman Energy Inc. was not included in the search, spokeswoman Phoebe Buckland said. Sneh Seetal, spokesman for Suncor Energy Inc., which has North Sea operations, said “I am not aware nor have I heard of any such investigation of Suncor.” Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. spokesperson Alishia Paradis declined to comment Source: Globe and Mail

“Status Quo Friendly Pak Polls”
It’s estimated that 36 million electors out of the 86 million were newly registered, and 60 per cent turnout of voters is surely a significant sign that people are sick and tired of the stinky status quo of bad governance and rampant corruption. Unfortunately, Imran Khan’s political tsunami has bypassed the whole country, yet it reached the North, where the residents seriously welcomed the “anti status quo” tsunami. Miraculously, the Pashtun population succeeded in protecting its mandate from getting stolen. If the PTI makes the next government in the province of KP, it would have five years to do the repair and present a model to the rest of the country. This province is also blessed with natural resources, oil, gas, coal reserves, and huge hydropower potential. Bringing peace will surely attract foreign investors to the province ushering in a new era of prosperity under the PTI government for people of the province. Sadly, election 2013 was a day of massive rigging -specifically in Punjab and Sindh, because according to convincing evidence there was a negative scenario where the turnout even exceeded 100% reaching 300% suggesting nothing but a ballot stuffing illegality. Among the other severe scenarios were the voting at gun point, violence, and other intended clerical irregularities encouraging “in-
complete-vote-casting” aimed at adding to unacceptable ballots in order to give unfair benefit to the vested interests. Despite all this, the Pakistan Muslim League (N) went ahead delivering its “acceptance speech” and announced Nawaz Sharif as its new Prime Minister, wonderful! Just imagine the over-excited winners didn’t even wait for the official announcement by the Election Commission of Pakistan. And, congratulations already started pouring in from foreign lands-wow! Furthermore, the Media hype and TV channels’ announcing results before the “voting-time-deadline” was a little bit too much, as that amounts to manipulation through robbing the independent thoughts of the electors. Obviously, if the “political free will” gets compromised this way, then where is the free and fair election? Having emerged as a winner party, the PML-N faces a lot of tough challenges ahead. Rescuing the drowning economy, tailoring foreign relations in the best interests of Pakistan are quite difficult ones. And, dealing with three different provincial governments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Baluchistan will not be that easy either. Since the PML(N) has rich repeaters who have wealth of experience as well, certainly, there will be a strategy in place. However, prioritizing the targets will still be
needed. Starting with correcting the electricity shortage as number one priority, the new regime will have to fix terrorism and the law and order situation to revive the economic health of the country on a faster track. Furthermore, for facilitating effective governance, a reasonably tailored cabinet is urgently needed for delivery to the impatient public whose tolerance level seems to be around zero. The problem is when it comes to appointing Ministers, accommodating party office bearers and political allies will be a real fun for Nawaz Sharif unless he plays political maneuver skilfully. Question is whether the PML (N) is going to eliminate the status quo of VIP culture and other corruption culture as well as disallow a lavish spending on privileges to the parliamentarians and the office bearers. Answer is “no” because change of mindset can’t be expected at this point in time. Tradition of Rigging: No matter what, generally greed becomes the motivating factor overtaking one’s conscience; hence the evil leads the contestants to win by hooks or by crooks. Many videos can be viewed on social network confirming rigging of the polls. On the other hand, PTI leaders claim the party would emerge victorious if free and fair re-election is conducted in NA-250. PTI supporters in Lahore demanded a transparent re-election in NA-122
and NA-125. While the senior PTI leader Hamid Khan said he would lodge a complaint with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against election rigging across Punjab. “We will not allow those who stole our mandate to live peacefully,” he said while talking to participants of the sit-in. He claimed the results were changed in many constituencies and maintains that PML-N did carry out rigging across Punjab. Also, the PTI Chairperson has already demanded a fresh re-count of the votes in the disputed constituencies. So far, the ECP has decided to go ahead with re-election in NA 250 on 19 May. Painful reality remains - either the morally bankrupt politicians are blind and cannot learn from the consequences faced by the past wrongdoers, or they don’t give a damn to ethical values; thus prefer ignoring the rules, law and the constitution. Again, the protesters are out there on the streets doing limited sit-ins against the massive rigging in the recent elections. In central and rural Punjab the same reports are emerging. Failure of the ECP is sad of course. If the army and rangers were deployed in sensitive areas, then what did stop them from moving against the culprits? Currently, the country is going through tough financial problems of its own, and IMF installment is

F A I T H Translation Of Sahi Muslim Book 20, Number 4491: It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr who said: I said to the Holy Prophet (may peace be upon him): Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint me to a public office? He stroked my shoulder with his hand and said: Abu Dharr, thou art weak and authority is a trust. and on the Day of judgment it is a cause of humiliation and repentance except for one who fulfils its obligations and (properly) discharges the duties attendant thereon.
The Call of Islam: Peace & Moderation, Not Intolerance and Extremism By: Sadullah Khan Islam is salaam (peace) and tasleem (submission to the Divine). In Islam Peace is the standard, it is the principle, and each person of faith has the moral obligation to maintain peace, without compromising on justice and truth. Islam invites to the subul as-salaam (pathway of peace); peace of mind, peace of conscience, peace in the family and society, peace with one’s Creator and His creation. One of the attributes of the Divine is As-Salaam (The Source of Peace) and Muslim greeting universally, upon meeting and departing, is as-salamu ‘alaykum or “peace be unto you”. The final and ultimate reward for human endeavor is Paradise, referred to in the Qur’an as Dar-us-Salaam (Abode of Peace) The Believers were intended to be an ummah (community) that serves as a standard/model for others; what the Qur’an describes .”...And we have made you (ummatan wasata) a median community / a people of moderation/ a balanced medium in order that you may be a testimony or model for humanity.” [Qur’an 2:143] It is the absence of the balance provided by wasatiyyah (moderation) that extremism creeps in. Wasatiyyah is an antidote to ... ghuluww (excessiveness), tanattu’ (harshness), tashaddud (severity), tatarruf (extremism) ... in all its forms. Intolerance Whence?
How is it then that some Muslims are so intolerant of other faiths, involved in atrocious and heinous acts of violence and senseless killing? Are they oblivious to the historic example of how the Prophet engaged those of different Faiths? It seems that some among Muslims seem to have lost sound understanding of the teachings of our Faith and are substituting the sublime message of Islam by a discourse of anger and the rhetoric of rage. There is no command or teaching in Islam that can be referenced as the direct reason behind an extreme act, and killing. Those who are planning and orchestrating any senseless killings are the worst representatives of their religions and enemies of their communities. Those who are perpetrators acts of wanton violence in the name of Islam are doing a most grievous disservice to Islam. Others take pride in being Muslims however un-Muslim their stance may be. Then there are those who cheer acts of violence because they too have degenerated into a hateful people. Zealots are a plague upon religion. Extremists, whether reactionary or radical are a bane to religion. Reactionary extremists do not want any pluralism; they view the world in black and white, good and evil terms. They are good and anyone who opposes them is evil. From among the Muslims these are people who ‘ex-

The port in Chittagong, which has a population of about three million, and the airport in Cox’s Bazar were closed on Wednesday. Meteorologists said Mahasen should weaken quickly into a tropical rain depression over land. “Mudslides will also be a concern as the heavy rain spreads farther north and east on Thursday night and Friday into easternmost India and northern Myanmar,” said meteorologists at Accuweather.com storm forecasters. Bangladesh has more than 1,400 cyclone-proof buildings on standby, but across its eastern border in Myanmar tens of thousands of people on the coast were sheltering in makeshift camps and huts made of timber and palm fronds. In 2008, Cyclone Nargis killed up to 140,000 people in Myanmar’s Irrawaddy delta, south of the main city, Rangoon. The U.S.-based Tropical Storm Risk said Mahasen should track northeast after hitting Chittagong, missing Myanmar. The Myanmar government had planned to move 38,000 internally displaced people, most of them Rohingya Muslims, by Tuesday but many have refused to relocate from camps in Rakhine State in the west of the country, afraid of the authorities’ intentions. At least 192 people were killed in June and October last year in violence between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingyas, who are denied citizenship by the government in Myanmar and considered by many Buddhists to be immigrants from Bangladesh. At a camp near the sea on the outskirts of Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State, several people told Reuters on Wednesday they would rather perish in the storm than evacuate. “We arrived here last year because of the clashes between Rakhine and Muslims. I lost everything. Both my mother and my two young daughters died,” said Hla Maung, 38, a Muslim. “If the cyclone hits here, I will pray to Allah. Everyone here wants to die in the storm because we lost everything last year.” Myanmar is a mainly Buddhist country but about 5 per cent of its 60 million people are Muslims. They face a growing anti-Muslim campaign led by radical Buddhist monks. A Reuters Special Report found apartheid-like policies were segregating Muslims from Buddhists in Rakhine State. communicate’ any Muslim who fail to share their interpretations of the Qur’an and their understanding of the faith. They use takfir (denouncing a Muslim as an unbeliever) and character assassination as a tool for marginalizing any criticism directed at them. Radical extremists differ only in that they will use violence to further their cause and that the end justifies the means. They see any act as acceptable if it will further their ‘cause.’ This is blatantly anti-Islamic. In Islam the means must reflect its noble ends. Any means that does not embody the core truths and ethics of Islam is not from Islam and thus denounced as aberration. Islam is not a secret society of conspirators who no one knows what they are planning. Islam declares openly its aims and objectives and these are recognized by good people everywhere as pure and congruent with their own wisdom and traditions. Islam never allows a Muslim to kill the innocent and the helpless Labeling something Islamic does not make it justifiable. Realize, that just because you are religious does not mean that you are right. Desiring to implement Islamic values is always noble, but having a meaningful and effective strategy is indeed most significant. Forc-
ing other is never an acceptable resort and certainly not the first resort; especially since our deen/way of life commands us not to use compulsion as a tool. Just because something needs to be done does not mean that anything that is done is okay; and just because something is done in religious fervor does not in any way prove that it is Islamically correct. According to the Qur’an [5:32]; Muslims have inherited the command from that prescribed to the Children of Israel “whoever takes a single life without justification is as if he has killed the entire humanity.” Furthermore we are reminded, If Allah had not repelled some people through others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques; all in which Allah’s name is much celebrated, would have been destroyed. Allah will certainly help those who help His cause and surely, Allah is All-Powerful, AllMighty’ [Qur’an, 22:40] If we do not abide by these principles established in the Qur’an, then we are undermining the very spirit of our Deen. We must heed the Qur’anic warning against extremism in religion. ... do not be extreme in your religion [Qur’an 4:171] The Prophet further warned, My intercession will not be availed two categories of my
community; an oppressive/unjust ruler and a rebellious extremist [Tibrani] I warn you regarding extremism, because communities before you were destroyed due to extremism [Nisa’i] Injustice of the self-righteous Some deviant people/groups are committing acts in the name of Islam which are contrary to the fundamental of our faith, while not enough seem courageous enough to openly stand up to these bullies who are denigrating the name and image of Islam. Remember the words of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh):”A Muslim (one who proclaims faith) is that person from whose hands and tongue other Muslims are safe; A Mu’min (one who manifests faith) is that person in whom humanity find safety and security regarding their lives, property and honor.” [Baihaqi] The Prophet (pbuh) further advised ...Allah is kind and loves kindness in every matter, and kindness has been granted capacity which violence could never attain. [Sahih Muslim] May Allah protect the innocent from the injustices of the selfrighteous. Shaykh Sadullah Khan is the Director of Impower Development International

Building collapse in Bangladesh may hit image of global brands BY: KAY JOHNSON Global clothing brands involved in Bangladesh’s troubled garment industry responded in starkly different ways to the building collapse that killed more than 600 people. Some quickly acknowledged their links to the tragedy and promised compensation. Others denied they authorized work at factories in the building even when their labels were found in the rubble. The first approach seems to deserve plaudits for honesty and compassion. The second seems calculated to minimize damage to a brand by maximizing distance from the disaster. Communications professionals say both are public relations strategies and neither may be enough to protect companies from the stain of doing business in Bangladesh. Such experts say that with three deadly disasters in Bangladesh’s $ 20 billion garment industry in the past six months, possibly the only way retailers and clothing brands can protect their reputations is to visibly and genuinely work to overhaul safety in Bangladesh’s garment factories. A factory fire killed 112 workers in November and a January blaze killed seven. “Just public relations, is not going to do it,” said Caroline Sapriel, managing director of CS&A, a firm that specializes in reputation management in crisis situations. Over the past decade, major players in the fashion industry have flocked to Bangladesh, where a minimum wage of about $ 38 a month has helped boost profits in a global business worth $ 1 trillion a year. Clothing and textiles now make up 80 percent of Bangladesh’s exports and employ several million people. Yet the country’s worker safety record has become so notorious that the reputational risks of doing business there may have become too great even for retailers and brands that didn’t work with factories in the collapsed Rana Plaza building or the Tazreen Fashions factory that burned late last year. “I don’t think it’s enough anymore to say: We’re not involved in these particular factories,” Sapriel said. Many clothing brands were quick to distance themselves from the five factories that were housed in Rana Plaza. The building, which was not designed for industrial use and had three illegally added levels, collapsed April 24. Benetton said none of the factories were its authorized suppliers, although Benetton labels were found in the rubble. Spain’s Mango said it hadn’t bought clothing from Rana Plaza factories but acknowledged it had been in talks with one factory to produce a test batch of clothing. German clothing company KiK said it was “surprised, shocked and appalled” to learn its t-shirts and tops were found in the rubble. The company said it stopped doing business with the Rana Plaza factories in 2008. It promised an investigation. WalMart said there was no authorized production of its clothing lines at Rana Plaza but it was investigating whether there was unapproved subcontracting. Swedish retailer H&M, the single largest customer of Bangladeshi garment factories, said none of its clothes were produced there. The Walt Disney Co. in March responded to publicity from last year’s fire at the Tazreen factory, where its branded clothing was found, by pulling out of Bangladesh production altogether. Only a few companies, including Britain’s
Primark and Canada’s Loblaw Inc., which owns the Joe Fresh clothing line, have acknowledged production at Rana Plaza and promised compensation. Loblaw’s CEO said there were 28 other brands and retailers using the five factories and urged them to end their “deafening silence.” Companies that are downplaying involvement in Bangladesh’s factory safety problems may be counting on the short memories of Western consumers, who tend to focus on price and may not even check where a piece of clothing has been made. But that’s a risky strategy, said Rahul Sharma, public affairs executive with the India-based public relations firm Genesis Burston-Marsteller. “Reputation is built over a long period of time. But to lose it, it can take seconds,” Sharma said. Even companies that do make efforts to ensure they use only factories with good safety records are now at
risk of being lumped in with the problems that are rife in Bangladesh’s garment industry, he said. Sharma said that if he were advising any retailer doing business in Bangladesh, he would recommend swift action in the form of a concrete plan to overhaul the entire industry, working with government, factory owners and labor unions. “They need to send out the message that they are addressing this problem — and then they need to actually do it,” he said. In the wake of the Rana Plaza collapse, there have been tentative moves to do that. Last week, the Bangladeshi garment association met with representatives of 40 garment buyers including H&M, JC Penny, Gap, Nike, Li & Fung and Tesco. Others have called for retailers and brands to now embrace a union-proposed plan for all retailers to fund factory upgrades and inde-
pendent inspections that would cover the entire industry in Bangladesh. That plan has previously been rejected by all but two major brands as too expensive for the corporations and Bangladesh’s responsibility to fix its own problems. PVH, the parent company of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands, and German retailer Tchibo were willing to sign up. But with the latest disaster, a potential loss of reputation could be far more expensive in the long run. “There is a perception when something terrible like this happens, that crisis communication is going to fix it,” Sapriel said. “But no, no. You have to go and fix the problem. And then, only then, can you can communicate that you’ve done something to fix the problem.”

Liberals win 4th straight time On Wednesday, May 14, the Prime Minister Stephen Harper congratulated Clark and her team on the election victory. “I look forward to continuing to work with Premier Clark on issues that matter to British Columbians and all Canadians, including jobs, growth and long-term economic prosperity,” said a statement from Harper’s office. The victory marks the fourth straight win for the B.C. Liberals, who were first elected in 2001 when Gordon Campbell led the party to the largest majority government in provincial history, winning 77 of 79 seats. Led by Campbell, the B.C. Liberals, who are not formally linked with the federal Liberal Party, won two more majority governments in 2005 and 2009 before Campbell stepped down following a popular revolt against the HST in 2010. Clark was first elected as an MLA in 1996 and served as deputy premier under Campbell from 2001 to 2005. She then stepped down to spend more time with her young son, before
making a failed run for the NPA nomination for mayor of Vancouver. In 2007, she became a talk radio host. After Campbell stepped down in 2010, Clark returned to provincial politics and won the leadership of the Liberal Party in February 2011 after defeating cabinet ministers Kevin Falcon, George Abbott and Mike de Jong in the race. She won her seat in a by-election in Vancouver-Point Grey with a narrow victory over Eby, making her the second woman to become premier of British Columbia after Rita Johnson in 1991. But Clark was considered an outsider by the party establishment and only had the support of one sitting MLA during her leadership campaign. After she took office several cabinet ministers stepped down ahead of the 2013 election campaign. Heading into the 2013 election, the Liberals held 45 seats, with the opposition NDP holding 36 and four MLAs sitting as Independents.
Linda Reid Wins Richmond East for the Sixth Time in a Row It’s another strong win for the incumbent Richmond East candidate Linda Reid. The Liberal candidate was first elected in 1991 and has served as Richmond East’s MLA for a continuous 22 years. While the NDP are expected to make enormous gains in other parts of the province, Richmond is traditionally a Liberal stronghold in provincial elections and this time was no exception. At time of publishing, Reid has secured 55 per cent of the vote with her closest rival, Gian Sihota from the NDP trailing with less than half the number of votes at 28 per cent.
NDP concedes defeat
NDP Leader Adrian Dix accepts defeat with 33 seats. Earlier, NDP Leader Adrian Dix conceded defeat in his speech, but said the party will continue to hold government accountable. “Obviously, we’re disappointed,” said Dix, whose focus on running a positive campaign failed to win over many voters who were apparently unwilling to trust the NDP to lead the province. “Our message didn’t get out in the way we needed it to get out to win the election.” Despite the party’s loss of three seats in the legislature, Dix wouldn’t say whether he’ll stay on as leader,
saying only that he plans to meet with the caucus in the coming days.
From Surrey Ridings:
Harry Bains, Bruce Ralston and Sue Hammell were re-elected, winning with a great Margin.
Green Party
Green Party candidate Andrew Weaver won the first provincial seat for the party in the Vancouver Island riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head, but party leader Jane Sterk failed to win her seat in Victoria. Overall the Greens won eight per cent of the popular vote.
Independent Party
Independent Vicki Huntington was re-elected in Delta South, making her the only one of three independent MLAs to hold on to her seat.

Mortgage Watch
By Kazim Jafary Good news is that you can take small steps towards mortgage freedom and save thousands of dollars in interest in the process; where there is a will there’s a way. According to Scotiabank’s Mortgage Landscape Study, almost two-thirds of mortgage holders agree they could pay off their mortgage faster without impacting their lifestyle. Some might wonder how much it takes – only an extra $20 per month. While many homeowners think in terms of lump-sum payments, there are also other ways in the mortgage market to save money and pay down your debt faster. Seventy-nine per cent of mortgage holders have taken at least one of these following steps. • Refinancing or renegotiating for a lower interest rate • Switching to bi-weekly payments • Increasing the amount of regular payments • Lump-sum payments Increasing your payment by just $20 a month will have a positive impact because the extra money is applied directly against the mortgage principal. This decreases the amount of interest you will pay over the life of the loan. For example, the average borrower would save almost $2,800 in interest over 25 years and reduce the amortization by 10 months. Imagine if you added $40 or $60 a month, how substantial would be the impact. Interestingly, the poll also showed that 21% of mortgage holders have not taken any steps to pay down their mortgage faster for the following reasons. • Don’t have available funds • Have other payment priorities • Don’t know what steps to take The poll also revealed that 51% of mortgagors have spoken to their mortgage professional about how they can become mortgage-free faster. It’s easy to forget about your mortgage when you are making automatic payments. It’s a good idea to keep up-to-date on mortgage options and interest rates .You could potentially save a huge amount of money by understanding those options. The freedom that being completely debt-free brings is a dream for many Canadians. If you are unsure of what your next step should be, it’s advisable to contact your mortgage professional. Together with your trusted mortgage professional, you can look at your bigger financial picture and devise a mortgage-reduction plan that works for you. Now let’s briefly focus on new immigrants who have recently moved to Canada and are probably in the process of searching for a place of their own. Looking for a home can be a very exciting experience that can be both rewarding and challenging. you the time to look for a home to buy without feeling pressured into making a quick decision. Under this section, the following topics are available. • Understanding ‘For Rent’ Ads • Checking Out a Home or Apartment • Signing a Lease • Keeping Your Home in Good Condition • How to Find and Rent a Home if You Have a Large Family • Paying the Rent: What’s Included - and What’s Not A series of interactive videos have also been produced as well as translated and featured in subtitles in all the other languages to provide you with information on home buying, mortgage literacy and home renovation. Mother & Daughter Event Celebrated by the Canadian Society of Fiji Muslims By: Sonam Naidu The Canadian Society of Fiji Muslims hosted another successful year of their annual “Mother & Daughter Event” at Bollywood Banquet Hall on May 4. No less than 500 women came together in unity to celebrate the power and importance of women. The maximum seating capacity in the hall was completely filled and fortunately ticket proceeds went towards building homes in Fiji Islands for those less fortunate. The event consisted of remarkable highlights, but the glamour girls who strutted the catwalk for Bombay Collection’s first ever runaway show was definitely the anticipation of the evening. The girls conquered the stage in a choreographed manner through melodious Bollywood tunes such as ‘Mar Jawa’ ‘Sans’ and ‘Ishq Wala Love’. The fashion show was split into a series of four
sequences with five looks per sequence. The core arrangements consisted of Shimmer sarees, sheer and Lace Lucha’s, crystal embellished Anarkali’s and gorgeous bridal lehnga’s. The experts at Bombay Collection were able to accentuate every outfit to its full potential. Jewelry hung not only from the neckline and the forehead but swept across the back from shoulder to shoulder; creating an overall fabulous look. The Blossom Makeup artistry team gave every model an identical look; with sleek pulled back buns, red lips and light smokey eyes that emphasized the detail and quality
Where Are You?
Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor An important key to let go of the past and reach your full potential, is by putting yourself in an environment where the the seed of your dreams can grow. We know of people who are extremely talented. They have incredible potential. But they still insists on hang-
ing around the wrong people. If you are close friends with people who are negative, undisciplined and has no great dreams, they will rub off on you very easily. Moreover the environment in which you place yourself will prevent you from rising any higher. You cannot hang out with negative people and expect to live a positive life. If all your friend are depressed and defeated and have given up their dreams, make some changes. Let’s be honest. You’re probably not go-
of the pieces shown on the runaway. Bombay Collection’s essential runaway show was a complete success! The boutique will continue its journey as Fashion pioneers in the South Asian community and also their contribution in future fashion events.
ing to pull them up, though you may have made numerous attempts. More likely, if you continue to spend too much time in their presence, they will pull you down. Certainly, you love your friends, you can even pray for them and try to encourage them to make positive changes in their lives. Sometimes the best thing you can do is break away from negative people and put yourself on a healthy, positive and funfilled environment. This is extremely critical, because it doesn’t matter how great the potential in the seed, if you don’t put it in good soil, and it doesn’t get good naturing, it will not grow.
It may be painful, but the best thing you can do is get away from somebody who is a constant drag on your spirit. Don’t allow somebody to treat you that way. You are extremely valuable. There is something as “the gift of good-bye.” That means that when somebody is pulling you down, you may choose to leave. You may not realize it but that person just did you a great favor. Don’t look back, instead keep looking forward. Get ready for new explorations and opportunities in your life. Have a positive attitude towards yourself and others!! shabnam@skcounselling.ca

The Fight for GMO-Free Food By: KARL GROSSMAN Will New York State be the first state in the nation to require the labeling of food containing what has become known as GMO— genetically modified organisms? More than 60 countries have enacted laws banning the use of GMO in producing food or requiring the labeling of food with ingredients that have utilized genetic modification or genetic engineering. But because of heavy pressure by the biotechnology industry, there are no such laws or regulations in the United States. There was an attempt in California in November to pass a referendum—Proposition 37—requiring labeling of GMO food. But despite initial strong public support, it failed after an advertising blitz led by biotech giant Monsanto. “There was a very well-funded misinformation campaign,” said Mark Kastel, co-director of the Cornucopia Institute. “Forty-six million”—the amount of dollars industry poured into the campaign against the proposition, five times as much as labeling supporters—“buys an awful lot of confusion and misunderstanding,” he commented. Now political action on a state level for labeling genetically modified food has come to New York with a bill before its State Legislature requiring it. “Consumers have a right to know what’s in their food, especially concerning products for which health and environmental concerns have been raised,” says the sponsor of the measure in the State Senate, Kenneth LaValle of Port Jefferson. A long-time educator and an attorney. he says: “My bill was introduced to give consumers the freedom to choose between GMOs and conventional products. Essentially, if a foodstuff is produced using genetic engineering, this must
be indicated on its label.” Kathleen Furey, education and media director of GMO Freehas been busy criss-crossing Long Island, New York City and elsewhere in the state challenging GMOs and pressing for passage of the proposed law. Crops using GMOs were introduced commercially in the United States in 1996. But “Americans are still dining in the dark,” said Ms. Furey in a recent presentation in Sag Harbor, New York. Ms. Furey, a graduate of Stony Brook University’s Sustainability Studies Department with a degree in environmental humanities, said that now in the U.S., 88% of corn, 90% of sugar beets and 94% of soybeans are grown using GMO. Some 80% of “bottled, boxed or canned foods in the U.S.” contain GMO ingredients. And livestock feed “is comprised mostly of GMO corn and soybeans.” GMOs “dominate the agricultural landscape” of America today, she said. People have “the right to make informed choices about what we eat,” she emphasized. “We have the right to be protected from food health risks and the right to stop being used as guinea pigs.” GMO technology is used to create “transgenic species” of plants and animals. Through it, genes from one often unrelated species are introduced into another. The biotechnology industry insists GMO technology doesn’t harm people and is useful. It points to how, with genetic modification, plants resistant to some pests have been developed. But GMO opponents hold it is harmful and various uses have backfired. Moreover, they charge that the U.S. government—including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the agency empowered to protect Americans from contaminants in their food—has been
Good News!
acting as a rubber stamp for the biotechnology industry, doing its bidding. And it’s not that inside of government there isn’t an awareness of the dangers of GMOs, noted Ms. Furey. She pointed to “internal memos from FDA scientists citing the risks of GMO safety and toxicity that were disregarded by their superiors.” On pest resistance through GMOs, Ms. Furey spoke of how “superbugs resistant to pestresistanct GMO crops have evolved and are destroying those crops.” Also, “superweeds resistant to herbicides sprayed on GMO crops have evolved and caused farmers to spray more herbicide per acre and resort to the use of even more-toxic herbicides.” Ms. Furey and GMO Free NY are supported by national organizations. The Institute for Responsible Technology—http://www.responsibletechnology. org—based in Iowa, describes genetically modified foods as “not safe.” Its literature stresses a report by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine citing studies finding “serious health risks associated” with GMO food including “infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging…and changes to major organs and the gastrointestinal system.” Food & Water Watch - http://www. foodandwaterwatch.org - headquartered in Washington, D.C., is warning on its website about the Food and Drug Administration now “paving the way for genetically engineered salmon,” which it calls “frankenfish.” This, furthermore, “would open the floodgates” for genetically modified “cows and pigs which biotech companies are waiting in the wings to finally commercialize after years of research and development.” Just last month, the U.S. Congress passed and President Barack Obama approved what
GMO foes call the “Monsanto Protection Act”—a measure to last initially six months stripping federal courts of the authority to halt the planting and sale of genetically modified crops if litigation is brought alleging health risks. Ms. Furey calls it “incredibly unconstitutional.” The reach of the biotechnology industry extends into the U.S. Supreme Court. The court had before it in February a case involving Monsanto and genetically engineered seeds, yet Justice Clarence Thomas, formerly a Monsanto attorney, refused to recuse himself. He refused to recuse himself, too, in 2010 in another case involving Monsanto and GMO seeds and joined in the decision favoring Monsanto’s position. “It’s outrageous,” says Ms. Furey. Overall, the biotechnology industry’s drive for GMOs has been incredibly undemocratic and the process is quite likely unhealthy. Labeling is a minimum—so people can at least know what food is genetically modified and choose what’s still GMO-free. Karl Grossman, professor of journalism at the State University of New York/College of New York, is the author of the book, The Wrong Stuff: The Space’s Program’s Nuclear Threat to Our Planet. Grossman is an associate of the media watch group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR). He is a contributor to Hopeless: Barack Obama and the Politics of Illusion.

Canucks star Roberto Luongo says goodbye again This time, Roberto Luongo really does hope it’s goodbye. Of course, he said so long last year at this time and we all know what happened. But on Thursday, when he joined the rest of the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena for a final team get-together, Luongo made it clear that he does think it’s time to move on. Actually, way past time. If Luongo learned anything this past season, it’s to expect the unexpected. He didn’t think he’d start the season in Vancouver,
let alone end it here. Asked if he could envision returning to the same situation next season and again play second fiddle to Cory Schneider, Luongo said: “Not really. Like I just said before, I want to play and that’s the bottom line. “The way I came into camp, the way I felt about my game and stuff I was really excited about that. For once I had a good start to the season and I was happy and with all the stuff going around I kind of lost a little momentum in the middle. But at the end of the day I feel like I have many good years left in me and I can contribute somewhere and I want to be part of something like that.” Luongo made his comments about an hour before Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis addressed the media. It sounds like Gillis plans to
grant Luongo his wish. Asked about the likelihood of Luongo being here next season, Gillis said simply: “I think it is unlikely.” It doesn’t figure to be easy, as Gillis discovered this past season. Luongo is 34 and has nine years and just over $40 million left on the 12-year deal he signed with the Canucks. Luongo thinks everyone -- he and Schneider, the coaches, the rest of the team -- handled a difficult situation as best they could. As Luongo spoke, Schneider was at the other end of the hall giving his own interview. He disclosed that it was a groin injury that kept him out of Games 1 and 2 of the playoff series with the San Jose Sharks. He suffered the injury in the third period of Vancouver’s 3-1 home-ice win over the Chicago Blackhawks on
Seattle, Sacramento enter final chapter in fight for control of NBA Kings Inside the small club on Seattle’s Capitol Hill late Monday night, the chant would not be contained by the walls, drifting out onto the street with every urging scream from the performers on stage. “Super,” the DJs would shout. “Sonics,” was the emphatic reply from the crowd. After months of waiting and politicking, recommendations and reversals, and a remarkable amount of money being thrown around, fans in Seattle will finally learn Wednesday whether they will cheer on a team with the SuperSonics name again or whether the Kings will remain in Sacramento. “May” remains the important word as the NBA Board of Governors meets on Wednesday in Dallas to tackle the issue of whether the Kings stay in Sacramento or are allowed to move to Seattle, where they would be rechristened the SuperSonics. Investor Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer have had a deal since January to buy a 65 per cent controlling interest in the Kings from the Maloof
family. Hansen originally offered a total valuation of $525 million, then increased that offer to $550 million after a competing Sacramento group matched his deal. He hoped to move the team to Seattle to replace the original Sonics, who were relocated and renamed the Thunder in 2008. After months of staying quiet and letting the process play out, the Hansen and Ballmer group went on the offensive following the NBA relocation committee’s decision on April 29 to recommend denying the move. The Hansen and Ballmer group elbowed its way back into the conversation using money and creativity. It started last Friday when Hansen increased his total valuation of the Kings from $550 million to $625 million. Hansen also announced on his website that he has guaranteed owners that the franchise would pay into the league’s revenuesharing system if it was in Seattle and not collect money as it has in Sacramento. On Saturday, word leaked of a backup deal with the Maloofs

to purchase a minority interest in the Kings, with the Maloofs remaining the controlling party. The limited partnership would be a purchase of at least 20 per cent of the Maloofs’ stake in the franchise at a valuation of $600 million, but the Hansen/Ballmer group would retain a twoyear option to purchase majority control. They were bold and aggressive moves by the Seattle group. And for fans, they were a needed boost. “If they had folded, we would have folded,” said Robinson. All that brings the whirlwind back to Wednesday’s meeting in Dallas and likely the last chance to provide clarity. Anyone who says they definitively know what will come out of the meeting is likely just taking educated guesses. The roller coaster both cities have been on emotionally since January has come with stomach-knotting twists and turns that have provided little clarity about what the final answer will be. Will the Kings stay in Sacramento with an ownership group led by

April 22 while stretching to make a save. “Felt something I hadn’t felt before in my career,” Schneider said. “It wasn’t anything major. I was able to finish the game, but there was some discomfort and I could tell that something wasn’t right. But with 10 minutes left in a game against Chicago, I didn’t want to come out of the net.” If he really is leaving, Luongo seems to be departing Vancouver with the fans solidly behind him. They clearly appreciated not only the solid goaltending he provided most nights over his seven seasons here, but the class and humour he displayed in what was an uncomfortable situation. For them, Luongo offered a thank you and an apology before leaving the rink Thursday. Source: Vancouver Sun Vivek Ranadive and plans for a new downtown arena? Will the Maloof family remain majority owners with Hansen and Ballmer as minority investors in a Sacramento team? Will Hansen and Ballmer be successful in throwing enough money into the pot that owners are swayed to give the Kings a one-way ticket to Seattle? Or will expansion finally be a plausible solution that could satisfy both markets despite the NBA’s stance thus far that expansion won’t be discussed until after the league’s next television deal is negotiated? There is just as much apprehension in Seattle, where the criticism of the NBA has quickly risen since the relocation committee’s recommendation. Fans already feeling burned by the league after the messy Sonics divorce are having flashbacks. On Monday night, those concerns were forgotten for a few hours. Bouncers were forced to turn fans away from the club after capacity was reached and then exceeded. Those fortunate to arrive early and stay inside raised their bottles at every scream of the word “Sonics,” and they treated former Seattle great Shawn Kemp like a rock star when he took the stage. Kemp was the same as the others, keeping hope that Wednesday’s result would see a return of the Sonics. Source: Vancouver Sun

Pakistan's prime minister-elect urges stations in Pakistan's biggest city of Karachi. The Imran Khan to drop vote-rigging claim Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) has Nawaz Sharif says former cricket star and leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party should 'show the sportsman's spirit'. The winner of election has told former national cricket captain Imran Khan to "show the sportsman's spirit" and drop his complaints of vote-rigging. Nawaz Sharif, the victorious head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) which is set to secure a strong working majority in parliament, said the elections had been "by and large free and fair" and all sides should accept the results. Speaking to journalists in his luxurious estate in the outskirts of Lahore, Sharif said that his party had accepted the local election results, where the PML-N had failed to win a majority of seats in provincial assemblies, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where Khan's party won the highest number of seats. "We respect their mandate and similarly we expect them to respect our mandate," he said. He also argued the PML-N had accepted the result of the elections in 2008 even though "our hands had been tied very badly by Mr. Musharraf at that time".
ECP Seeks all Election record over rigging in Karachi Acting on the complaints of rigging in several constituencies in Karachi, the Election Commission of Pakistan has sought all records from DRO, RO, DPOs pertaining to rigging in Karachi elections. Statistics confirm rigging reports in Karachi An elections observer group in Pakistan has confirmed reports of rigging at some polling
provided statistics supporting reports of rigging at several polling stations where voter turnout was abnormally high. Since the elections were held, the media and many political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and Jamaat-e-Islaami, have alleged rigging at many polling stations in Karachi to secure big wins for the Mutthaida-e-Qaumi Movement candidates. According to the statistics registered in at least five polling stations show rigging trends since the number of votes polled far exceeds the registered voters, Polling stations with over 100 per cent votes polled include Orangi Town, Model Colony, Malir Colony and Shah Faisal Colony. The National Assembly constituencies affected by the apparent malpractice include NA-242,256 &257. As per statistics, 2,508 and 1,484 votes were polled at NA-242 Orangi Town's polling station 80 and 2, while the respective number of registered voters was 1,349 and 1,230. At station 151 of Model Colony and stations 63 of Shah Faisal Colony (NA-256), 3,233 and 2,495 votes were polled against a total of 2,114 and 2,405 registered voters. At least four other polling stations (PS-37, 38, 39 &40) in Landhi area falling under NA-255, also appeared to have been affected by irregularities, with the number of votes polled falling between 93 to 98 per cent of registered voters. In total, data provided by FAFEN shows at least 32 polling stations with over 80 per cent votes polled, which it says are abnormally high numbers.
