ISRAEL STEPS UP DEADLY GAZA STRIP OFFENSIVE Israel’s intense bombardment of the Gaza Strip has killed at least 72 people and wounded 130 others, Palestinian officials have said. Israel on Tuesday said it was ready for a long-term offensive against Hamas in the Palestinian territory after a surge in rocket attacks on Israeli towns. “We are preparing for a battle against Hamas which will not end within a few days,” Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said in a statement. Israeli said it had undertaken more than 273 airstrikes against the strip on Tuesday. The Israeli cabinet has authorised the calling up of 40,000 army reservists ahead of a possible ground offensive. At least 1,500 soldiers have already been deployed around the parameter of Gaza. Hafez Hamad, one of the leaders of the Continued on pg 5

80pc of Miramshah cleared, army says Major General Zafarullah Khan on Wednesday said that 80 per cent of Miramshah has been cleared during the North Waziristan operation, adding that outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur, if spotted, would be eliminated without any delay as reported by Dawn. The general further said that evidence of Al Qaeda’s presence in the region was found and the army was still facing opposition from some areas. The army official maintained that the civilian population was not targeted during the operation. This information, however, could not be independently verified. Major General Zafarullah Khan is the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7th Infantry Division Miranshah, North Waziristan. The general acknowledged that foreign and local militants were residing in the area. Bahadur is known to have links with notorious militant groups in tribal North Waziristan, including the Haqqani network. Jet fighters carried out airstrikes on suspected militant hideouts destroying three of them while 11 suspected militants were also killed earlier today during the Zarb-i-Azb operation in the North
Waziristan tribal region, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) sources said. The death toll, however, could not be independently verified. First time since the launch of this operation, Miramshah, the main town in North Waziristan, was opened for national and international media as media personnel, particularly from the television networks, were allowed to take shots of several destroyed militant hideouts. The army launched its long-awaited major operation ‘Zarb-i-Azb’ in the tribal region a week after an attack on the airport in Karachi, deploying troops, tanks and jets to the area in the crackdown on the Pakistani Taliban and other militants. So far more than 400 suspected militants, mostly foreigners, have been killed during the operation while at least 19 (improvised explosive device) IED-making factories have also been unearthed by security forces in parts of Miramshah. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), some 62,251 families left North Waziristan in the wake of the military offensive.
Pakistan on Wednesday announcing its full support for a peaceful democratic transition in Afghanistan said that it has already extended all possible support for the efforts aimed at holding peaceful elections. “In this regard, we took several measures to enhance vigilance and security along the border, during the first and second round of elections on 5 April and 14 June 2014, respectively,” said Tasnim Aslam, spokesperson for the Foreign Office, in a statement issued here. “Pakistan has also consistently emphasised that it would respect the democratic choice of the Afghan people,” she added. The spokesperson said that Pakistan has, from the outset, maintained that the Afghan Presidential elections are an Afghan affair, with Afghan electoral institutions in the lead. “We have seen the announcement by the Independent Elec-
tion Commission regarding preliminary results of the second round and noted the statement that these are not final and it is our earnest hope that all related issues would be resolved peacefully, through dialogue, in a timely manner and within the framework of Afghanistan’s constitution and laws,” she said. The spokesperson said that a peaceful, stable, unified and prosperous Afghanistan was vital for regional peace and stability. At this crucial juncture in Afghanistan, when the country was going through multiple transitions, Pakistan remains in strong solidarity with the brotherly people of Afghanistan. “We would continue to support all endeavours that help advance the cause of peace, stability and development in Afghanistan,” she said.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday moved the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over Nawaz Sharif’s qualification as a National Assembly member, DawnNews reported. PTI’s Ali Mohammad Khan and Murad Saeed approached ECP today with regard to this issue. Khan and Saeed filed a petition in ECP against Nawaz’s nomination papers with a demand that action be taken against Nawaz under Article 62, 63 on the basis of which he is ineligible to become a National Assembly member. MNA Saeed alleged that the premier is convicted in the Asghar Khan case and helicopter hijacking cases and must be dealt according to the law. In a press conference held today, Saeed accused Nawaz of being acquitted in the Asghar Khan case on the basis of bribery, adding that he cannot be nominated for NA membership. Recently son of former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, Arsalan Iftikhar challenged Imran Khan’s appointment in the National Assembly criticising him of not being “honest and trustworthy”, adding that the latter did not fulfill the criteria for being a representative of the people, as set in Articles 62
and 63 of the Constitution. A senior PTI official said that the party has evidence that Arsalan has the support of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), and that the ruling party is pursuing every effort to prevent Imran Khan from marching to the capital on August 14. Article 62 is the declaration from the presidential candidates affirming that they fulfil the qualification specified in Article 63 and that they are not hit by any of the disqualifications specified in Article 63, or any other law for the time being in force for being elected as the president of Pakistan. In the Asghar Khan case, the apex court had directed the federal government to take necessary action under the Constitution and the law against Gen (retd) Aslam Beg and LtGen (retd) Asad Durrani for their role in facilitating a group of politicians and political parties to ensure their success against their rivals in the 1990 elections. Previously, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi had awarded life sentence to Nawaz of hijacking a plane carrying former army chief Pervez Musharraf and 198 other passengers in 2000.

Deadly attack on
Feds to appeal after Abdullah calls Afghanistan court rules Omar Khadr run-off ‘rigged’ should be transferred to provincial jail
Afghan politician Abdullah Abdullah has rejected the results of June’s presidential runoff, calling the vote that put his arch-rival Ashraf Ghani ahead “rigged”. Speaking on Tuesday to a crowded gathering, known as a Loya Jirga, in Kabul, Abdullah told his followers that the results of the vote were fabricated and that he had won both rounds of voting. “I am refusing to accept the result, I condemn it and I will not accept it,” Abdullah said. “Nobody who has committed fraud should dream they will make their way to the presidential palace,” he added. Ghani, meanwhile, said that “political discussions” were needed in order to ensure the results were accepted by all. Abdullah told his thousands of supporters he was the winner of the run-off, putting himself on a collision course with Ghani. “We are the winner of this round of elections without any doubt,” he told a roaring crowd in central Kabul. The veteran politician, who was Afghanistan’s former foreign minister, said the Afghan people were waiting for him to announce a government and “defend their votes”, but stopped short of declaring his own government. Abdullah’s refusal to accept the result threatens to spark a political crisis in a country already destabilised by a conflict with Taliban fighters. Earlier on Tuesday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that any attempt to
take power illegally would cost Afghanistan US support. “I have noted reports of protests in Afghanistan and of suggestions of a ‘parallel government’ with the gravest concern,” he said in a statement issued by the US embassy in Kabul. “Any action to take power by extra-legal means will cost Afghanistan the financial and security support of the United States and the international community.” Security has been deteriorating in Afghanistan as most ISAF forces prepare to leave the country after 12 years of war against the Taliban. Abdullah’s comments came shortly after at least four NATO soldiers, two policemen and 10 civilians were killed in a suicide blast in eastern Afghanistan. Al Jazeera’s Jennifer Glasse, reporting from Kabul, said the timing of the attack was particularly sensitive. “These kinds of attacks are very, very worrying especially at this very politically delicate time with the presidential election results very much in doubt,” our correspondent said. Security sources told Al Jazeera that women and children were among the dead and at least 14 people were also injured in the attack on a medical clinic in the province of Parwan near the Bagram airbase. The Taliban claimed responsibility in a text message to the Reuters news agency. Source: Al-Jazeera
Ukraine’s government took an increasingly aggressive stance Tuesday toward the proRussia separatists, vowing to expunge them from their reduced area of control and imposing new conditions before peace talks can restart. But as the military moves to encircle the rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine, the government also said it would stop using the air and artillery strikes that drove the rebels from other towns so as to avoid terrorizing civilians. Ukraine has displayed growing confidence in recent days after driving the insurgents from Slovyansk, a city that had been the heart of the armed resistance since mid-April. Security officials said Tuesday the area held by the rebels has now been reduced by half. This apparent rout has forced hundreds of militants to regroup in Donetsk, the regional capital, where they occupy government buildings and move freely around the city. Andrei Purgin, deputy prime minister of the selfproclaimed independent Donetsk People’s Republic, said the rebels have an estimated 15,000 fighters and are focusing their efforts on defending Donetsk, a major industrial hub of 1 million. “We are creating one DPR fist that is ready to fight and repel the Ukrainian army,” Purgin told The Associated Press. He said his forces control all of Donetsk, where the normally busy streets were largely vacant but for groups of automatic rifle-toting rebels on patrol. “After Slovyansk we are gathering strength and resting. In Donetsk, we feel at home, and a home must be defended and protected,” said one 27-year-old rebel fighter, who gave his name only as Dmitry for fear of retaliation. A major asset still under government control is the Donetsk airport, the scene of abloody clash in May that claimed the lives of dozens of insurgents. Purgin vowed that the rebels would soon take “all assets of interest, including the airport.” In an indication of Kyiv’s increasingly intransigent line, Defence Minister Valery Heletey said Tuesday that ceasefire negotiations could only be restarted once the rebels lay down their weapons — something the rebels have rejected. Equally unacceptable to the rebels was President Petro Poroshenko’s suggestion that
mediation take place in Svyatogorsk, a government-controlled town north of Slovyansk. Donetsk Mayor Alexander Lukyanchenko, who has cautiously refrained from openly taking sides, said he was assured by Ukraine’s president that the military will not launch air and artillery strikes on the city. Those strikes had hit Slovyansk and other rebel-held towns to vocal criticism from Russia, which accused the central government in Kyiv of indiscriminately killing civilians. More than 400 people have died and tens of thousands have fled their homes during the nearly threemonth-long standoff between the rebels and the new government in Kyiv, which came to power after the previous Russia-friendly president was ousted in February. National Security Council spokesperson Andrei Lysenko said Tuesday that plans were being drawn up to recapture Donetsk, as well as another insurgent-held city, Luhansk, without the use of artillery or aviation. In Luhansk, an apartment building and a business centre were shelled on Tuesday, but no injuries were reported. The circumstances of the shelling were not immediately clear. In Donetsk, tension was high among residents who watched with dismay as Slovyansk, about 110 kilometres to the north, fell in an increasingly ugly standoff. “I plan to leave the city as soon as possible,” said Yekaterina Kachan, 47, who said the restaurant where she works was robbed by militia fighters. “They have turned us all into hostages, but I have no intention of digging graves for separatists under the muzzle of a rifle.” Rebels in Ukraine and nationalists in Russia have called for the Kremlin to protect the insurgents, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has so far made no comment on their defeat in Slovyansk. Putin may be wary of more sanctions being imposed by the West, which slapped visa bans and asset freezes on Russian officials and members of Putin’s inner circle after Russia annexed the Black Sea region of Crimea in March. Kyiv has accused Russia of lending direct support to the insurgents, something which Moscow denies. Source: Toronto Star
Ukraine imposes new conditions for peace talk
A lawyer for former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr says an Alberta court ruling ordering his transfer to a provincial jail gives him a new avenue to apply for freedom. But Khadr’s bid for release could be put on hold. The Alberta Court of Appeal said in a unanimous decision Tuesday that the 27-year-old should be serving a youth sentence in Canada, and should not be in a federal prison. Within three hours, the federal government issued a statement saying it plans to appeal the ruling and will apply to delay the transfer while it asks the Supreme Court to hear the case. Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney said a youth sentence is not appropriate for someone such as Khadr, who “pleaded guilty to heinous crimes. “We have vigorously defended against any attempt to lessen his punishment for these crimes,” said Blaney. “That is why the government of Canada will appeal this decision and seek a stay to ensure that he stays in federal prison -- where he belongs.” The Toronto-born Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to five war-crimes charges, including murder, for killing an American soldier in Afghanistan when he was 15. Khadr was accused of throwing a grenade that killed Sgt. Christopher Speer during a vicious battle at an Afghan compound in July 2002. After spending a decade in Guantanamo Bay, Khadr was sentenced by a U.S. military commission to an additional eight years and sent to Canada. He has said since then that he pleaded guilty so he could get out of the Cuban detention camp. When it sentenced him, the U.S. commission made no distinction between youth and adult punishment or between consecutive and concurrent sentences. When Khadr arrived in Canada in 2012, corrections authorities automatically took him into adult custody. His lawyers argued that the eightyear term for crimes including murder only make sense as a youth sentence and, although he’s now too old to be in a youth facility, Khadr should at least be in a provincial jail. Lawyers for the federal government argued that the sentence of a foreign court cannot be changed and that Khadr had been given eight years as a youth for murder and the sentences on four remaining offences were to be served concurrently as an adult. Last fall, Court of Queen’s Bench Associate Chief Justice John Rooke sided with the federal government and ruled Khadr’s placement in a federal prison
was lawful. The Appeal Court said he was wrong. “We have concluded that the chambers judge erred in law in finding that Khadr was properly placed in a federal penitentiary under the ITOA (International Transfer of Offenders Act),” the court said. “We conclude that Khadr ought to have been placed in a provincial correctional facility for adults.” One of Khadr’s lawyers, Nathan Whitling, said if the decision stands and Khadr gets to serve his time as a young offender, his hope for release no longer rests solely with the Parole Board of Canada. “Now he can apply to a youth court judge.” As a young offender, Khadr would get an annual review for release before a youth judge. Whitling said the judge could order his release and let him serve out his sentence in the community. Whitling said young-offender status wouldn’t necessarily help Khadr’s case before the parole board. Khadr didn’t apply when he was eligible for parole last year because he was still considered a maximum-security inmate. Earlier this year, Khadr was reclassified as a medium-security federal inmate and transferred to Bowden Institution in central Alberta from Edmonton Institution. His sentence is to expire on Oct. 30, 2018. Whitling said he spoke by phone with Khadr after the court decision and, while his client is optimistic about a transfer and eventual application for release, he’s worried he won’t get the chance. The Alberta government has yet to determine any details of a transfer to provincial custody. The province’s justice minister, Jonathan Denis, said his office supports the federal government’s appeal and request for a stay. Whitling said his client will ask to be moved to jail in Fort Saskatchewan, northeast of Edmonton, to be closer to his Edmonton lawyers. One of his other lawyers, Dennis Edney, said it’s important to get Khadr out of federal jurisdiction and “the hands of the Harper government.” The federal government would “rather pander to politics than apply the rule of law fairly to each and every Canadian citizen,” Edney said. “This government chose to misinterpret the International Transfer of Offenders Act and place Omar in a maximum security prison, where he spent the first seven months in solitary confinement, instead of treating him as a youth as required under both Canadian and international law.” Source: CTV News
5 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Voters face stark choice Dalai Lama urges end to anti-Muslim violence in Indonesia polls Ramadan 13, 1435 July 11, 2014
Voters in this sprawling archipelago nation face a choice between stark opposites in Wednesday’s presidential elections. Indonesia’s two presidential hopefuls are a study in contrasts: Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the soft-spoken governor of Jakarta and an outsider to the country’s political elite, is facing off against Prabowo Subianto, a former lieutenant general and wealthy businessman who has run an energetic, nationalist campaign. The election marks the first time in which Indonesia’s 187 million voters will replace one directly elected president with another. The vote comes as the country’s economy - the largest in southeast Asia - has begun to slow, and many voters say they are fed up with a spate of corruption scandals. Jokowi had been the clear frontrunner for months, but his once-massive lead in the polls has shrivelled. A poll released by the Indonesian Survey Institute on Monday found Jokowi hanging on to a 3.6-point lead over Prabowo, with eight percent of voters undecided. Prabowo has said Indonesia needs a powerful leader and expressed his support for returning the country to its 1945 constitution, which entails broad presidential powers. The former military man has a controversial past, dismissed from Indonesia’s armed forces in 1998 for his role in abducting several activists. Meanwhile, Jokowi’s sudden rise to national prominence and self-portrayal as a down-to-earth man of the people has surprised Indonesia’s political world, where most high-level politicians come from the country’s elite. But others worry that he lacks the requisite experience
to rule. The close contest has split voters in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, many of whom have strong opinions on the two contenders. Slamet Masdar, a 71-year-old Jakartan who served in Indonesia’s navy, will vote for Prabowo because he “is a firm guy” who has the fortitude needed to root out corruption. “Jokowi is a good guy, a clean guy,” he conceded - but argued that he does not have the resume to be president. At Jokowi’s vigorous final campaign rally at a stadium in central Jakarta, vocational high school teacher Hadi Sukarno described Jokowi as a “kind, ordinary citizen” who has been able to bring about “real action” as governor of Jakarta. The run-up to the election in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country has seen Jokowi subjected to smears that he is Christian and ethnically Chinese. But pollsters like Dodi Ambardi, the executive director of the Indonesian Survey Institute, also attribute the race’s tightening to missteps, saying Jokowi “does not have a very centralised and well-funded campaign team” and that his PDI-P party seems “half-hearted” about supporting its own candidate. By contrast, he said Prabowo’s well-organised campaign has been “leading the discourse” as the polls approach. Global investors are paying close attention to Wednesday’s results in this resource-rich nation. Although both candidates have voiced support for nationalist economic policies, markets seem bullish on Jokowi, with expectations he will implement business-friendly measures and eliminate costly fuel subsidies. Ubedilah Badrun, the director of Indonesian think tank Puspol, said a smooth transition of power in the election could have beneficial effects on the broader region, noting that Indonesia’s pro-democracy movement in 1998 influenced a similar reformist push in neighbouring Malaysia. Indonesia, which was ruled by authoritarian leader Suharto for more than three decades until he was toppled by protests in 1998, is today regarded as among the most vibrant democracies in southeast Asia. ISREIL : Continued from pg 1 Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad, was killed in a strike on his home in Beit Hannoun, neighbours and hospital officials said. Two children, two females and one adult male were also reported killed in the attack. At least five children were among 12 others killed in Gaza on Tuesday, Palestinian officials said. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appeared on Palestinian TV late on Tuesday to appeal for international help as renewed conflict between Israel and Hamas continued to escalate. Abbas said he had been in touch with the various Palestinian factions and leaders of Hamas whom, he said, did not want an escalation. “What’s happening in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem is not a war between two armies,” he said. “The Palestinian people are an unarmed people, people who live under occupation. “It’s time now for the international community, and especially the Quartet and the Security Council to take their responsibility to guarantee the international protection of our people.” The renewed violence came a day after nine Palestinians were killed following more than 60 Israeli airstrikes struck the Gaza strip on Monday. Palestinian fighters launched more than 80 rockets that day. Following the worst outbreak of violence along the Gaza frontier since an eight-day war in 2012, the Israeli military said a ground invasion was possible, though not imminent, and urged citizens within a range of 40km of the coastal territory to stay close to bomb shelters. Israelis ran for cover as sirens sounded in Tel Aviv in the deepest attack from Gaza since hostilities flared three weeks ago after the abduction and killing of three young Israeli settlers. A state of emergency has been declared in Israel’s business capital where rockets were apparently intercepted by Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defence system. Air raid sirens later sounded in Jerusalem, where dozens of rockets landed close to
The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, has reiterated his plea to Buddhists in Myanmar and Sri Lanka to halt violence against Muslims, in a speech to tens of thousands of devotees to mark his 79th birthday. In front of the massive crowd that included Hollywood film star Richard Gere in Leh, India-administered Kashmir, the Dalai Lama said the violence in both Buddhist-majority countries targeting religious minority Muslims was unacceptable. “I urge the Buddhists in these countries to imagine an image of Buddha before they commit such a crime,” Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader said on the outskirts of Leh, high in the Himalayas. “Buddha preaches love and compassion. If the Buddha is there, he will protect the Muslims whom the Buddhists are attacking,” the leader, who fled Tibet for India in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, said. The Dalai Lama also expressed shock at a wave of deadly violence by Sunni rebels against fellow Muslims, although he did not refer specifically to Iraq. Inter-communal violence in Myanmar has overshadowed widelypraised political reforms since erupting in 2012. It has largely targeted Muslims, who have faced social and economic boycott from the majority community. Last month in Sri Lanka, three Muslims were killed and hundreds of shops and homes damaged in the island’s worst religious violence in recent decades. The Dalai Lama celebrated
his birthday at his residence on the outskirts of Leh in Ladakh, a mainly Buddhist region. The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate was in Ladakh to confer Kalachakra, a Buddhist process that empowers tens of thousands of his disciples to attain enlightenment. The Dalai Lama announced his retirement from politics two years ago, but he is still the most powerful rallying point for Tibetans, both in exile and in their homeland, and remains the universally recognised face of the movement. The leader supports “meaningful autonomy” for Tibet within China rather than outright independence. But China accuses the Dalai Lama of covertly campaigning for Tibet’s independence, and calls him a “splittist” Source: Al-Jazeera
Pakistan condemns Israeli attacks on Gaza
Pakistan on Wednesday expressed its deep concern at the recent escalation of violence and loss of lives in Gaza. “Pakistan condemns Israeli aggression,” Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said in a statement issued here on Wednesday. The spokesperson said that Pakistan supports the international community’s efforts in bringing about a cessation of unilateral Israeli strikes killing Palestinians, including
women and children. “Pakistan has consistently supported the Palestinian cause, specially the two-state solution which paves the way for a viable, geographically contiguous Palestinian state, created on the basis of pre1967 borders, with Al Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.” Source Daily Times Pakistan
the city. Israel said other areas targeted included Beer Sheva, Ashdod and Ashkelon. The Israeli military said that in the past 24 hours, more than 100 rockets had been fired at its territory. Some were intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system, but two people were wounded by shrapnel. The Israeli military said that more than 200 rockets have been launched at Israel from the Gaza Strip since Israel mounted the dragnet while searching for the missing settlers. Of those killed on Tuesday, seven died in an air strike in the town of Khan Yunis, south of Gaza. At least 25 were injured in that attack. Palestinian medical officials said that at least four were killed in a drone strike that hit a vehicle in al-Wahda Street in the centre of Gaza. Ealier on Tuesday, an air raid targeted a site belonging to the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, killing one person. Explosions echoed across the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, shaking buildings and sending smoke rising from targets hit by Israeli fire. In residential areas, the sounds of crying children could be heard as ambulance sirens wailed. Some people took to rooftops to watch for Israeli aircraft and rockets streaking toward Israel. “We will not tolerate rocket fire against our cities and townships, and therefore I ordered a significant broadening of IDF (Israel Defence Force) operations against the terrorists of Hamas and other terror groups in the Gaza Strip,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. Washington has backed Israel’s actions while France, Germany and the United Nations urged restraint on both sides. “We strongly condemn the continuing rocket fire inside of Israel and the deliberate targeting of civilians by terrorist organisations in Gaza,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. Cleansing the Epicentre of Anti-Pakistan Terrorism
Enough is enough: Pakistan kistan has been facing a number of challenges; some are home grown while some are imported - most of which are identifiable only with circumstantial evidence. However, there are many clear cut proofs of foreign meddling as per the rulers’ claims. Better late than never: Karachi Airport incidence has finally been considered as a wake-up call which actually ignited a large military offensive in the history of Pakistan. “Operation-Zarb-e-Azb” is a reality now. Launching offensive of that magnitude is not a joke, especially, when Pakistan already faces severe economic downturn. Seemingly, this will be a long ‘deadly war’ full of suffering and sacrifices. Yet, it’s worth fighting to achieve permanent peace and prosperity for 185 million Pakistanis. Obviously, launching offensive on such a large scale involves allocating huge funds for the purpose. If the operation lingers on for an indefinite period, a severe financial strain is imminent. Yet, for sake of Pakistan’s survival, the operation has to be successful. Success would eventually arrive when safe havens of the TTP militants are eliminated by the Pak Air Force, while the Pak Army keeps advancing to recapture the lost ground. Good news: The terrorists’ hideouts and huge cache of arms and ammunition have already been destroyed. Pakistani jets are busy bombing the militants in a lawless tribal district and have successfully achieved targets. The operation seems to be gaining momentum.
It’s worth mentioning that the Prime Minister’s pronouncements and the adoption of the “Protection of Pakistan Bill” by the National Assembly show a serious intent at the government level to free the country of the terrorist menace at all cost. On the contrary, the experts claim that the vital element of SURPRISE has been missed in this very operation. A prolonged period of time for the negotiated settlement actually gave undue advantage to the militants who disappeared from the scene. Other problem is many militants are believed to have become clean shaven (with no more turbans) to merge with the IDPs (internally displaced persons). So, the IDP camp has to be under military monitoring/surveillance 24/7 to stop the terrorists from sneaking in or sneaking out. Maybe, the menace of terrorism is inherently far from over as an excessive amount of precious time was given to the peace negotiators but no deal ever materialized - because the TTP was only buying time to get re-inforced. The reality is Pak Army is in a state of the bloodiest war that it has ever fought. The expert opinion is Pak military is fighting a deadly 4G war within. However, it would defend the country in case there occurs a “3G threat” from India. Now the military needs more of esprit de corps, sense of unity, and the confidence of 185 million Pakistanis. The latest campaign is much more complex than any other undertaken by the security forces so far in its decade-long war in this treach-
Letters & Opinions WOMEN & MOTHERHOOD
moun erous region comprising of mountainous territory. Despite the fact that the military is now much more experienced in fighting insurgency, this asymmetric war is not going to be easy. In other words, the current military campaign is far more complex than any other undertaken by the security forces so far and it’s going to be a long haul. The Pakistani state is having a difficult time. There is the constant pressure of the War on Terror, created by the US occupation of Afghanistan. Due to US presence in the region, operations as Zarb-eAzb become vitally important. There has been a huge effort to convince Pakistanis that this was their war, and there you go, it has absolutely become one. Though, there is a natural distinction made between Pakistani troops and the militants, yet the fact remains that casualties on both sides are Muslims, thus it becomes Pakistanis’ war. Other development: A control room has been set up at the office of the commissioner Bannu to facilitate the internally displaced persons of North Waziristan Agency in getting help of the relief organisations and volunteers. The control room has been set up at the special directives of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak. The basic purpose of the control room is to share with the concerned quarters the updated information about the affected people of North Waziristan Agency, monitor the registration of IDPs and relief activities, and addressing complaints against any federal or provincial government

CURRENT SITUATION IN PAKISTAN
ers: “The second news relates to the forfeiture of the final attempt by the Catholic Church of the Christian fraternity of Malaysia to use the word ‘Allah’ (An Arabic term) to refer to God. The highest court of the country ruled in a legal dispute between the Christians and Muslims that the ban on the use of this word on the Christians is lawful and exclusively the followers of Islam can use this word. A seven Judge panel ruled that the lower court decision siding with the government stood and consequently, the application of the Christian community impugning the government decision was dismissed. It is positively a correct decision in my estimation for no community ought to be permitted to intermeddle into the religious affairs of the other community; otherwise, there would be a social chaos and breach of harmony all through the communities around. Either one should convert himself to Islam in any of its forms if anyone wants to use the term ‘Allah’ for God, which is peculiar in Islam only, or shun the use of this term altogether if one sticks to his/ her own religion. The system of the belief of Islam nowhere shuts its doors for the entry of the nonMuslims into its fold. Anybody is free to adopt it as his/her way of belief, subject, however, to some
department (Pak News Papers) departments. Nevertheless, the issue of militants fleeing into Afghanistan, or disguising themselves to infiltrate IDP camps is the prolonged gap between the lingered on hopes for negotiations and the operation zarb-e-azb. Consequently, there is widespread paranoia and panic. It’s suggested that IDPs be kept in camps and be disallowed a free mobility in Pakistan. Caution: Pakistan’s war on terrorism can be won if the rulers show good governance, address and resolve the root causes of extremism and terrorism in the country including the extreme poverty, unemployment, injustice, inequality, illiteracy etc. The most strategic need is the cutting of supply line to the militants including their financial resources from within and from the hostile foreign sources. Smoking out the TTP terrorists from their hideouts in Karachi must be the top priority, otherwise, further terrorist activity could restrain all chances of investment and economic revival in Pakistan. PIA is unable to even lease more airplanes because of the messy terrorism on the airports is scary. Hopefully, the Operation Zarb-eAzb restores the writ of State and the things are back to normal.

fundamental conditions.” I am an individual of non-Muslim background, as most people are aware of, and let me admit without mincing words that very often I have been using the words of Allah, SWT for God and PBUH for the Holy Prophet Muhammad in my writings that have been published over and over again in the Miracle newspaper. Although I am a devout Hindu since after my birth, but I had been using this word simply to express my solidarity and cohesion with the local Islamic fraternity, otherwise, there was no ill intention to offend the sentimentalities of the Muslim community in any manner whatsoever. Nonetheless, in the light of the supra judgment of the apex court of Malaysia, whereby the Christians, being non-Muslims, have been restrained to use the word ‘Allah’ I have been required to contemplate very thoughtfully whether or not it would be appropriate for me to use this word any more in my write ups that I may scribe in future and what will be the probable reaction of the Islamic community thereto? I do hereby solicit the valued direction of the men of Islamic knowledge and wisdom in this regard and I shall be highly grateful to them if the individuals of judicious mindset lead my way.

Being Shaped by Ramadan
SADAQAT-UL-FITR $10.00 PER PERSON
May Allah bless everyone with peace and happiness in this Ramadan
mosques, mosques in which declarations of ‘God is the Greatest’ resound as in the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. You would think that the streets are each a mosque and each mosque is Ka’bba. The people shaped by Ramadan in this way, though mortal in nature, gain a sort of eternity and each of their acts done in the consciousness of deliberate worship becomes a ceremony per taming to the Hereafter. Nights are experienced more deeply and in consideration of the afterlife, and days are spent as portions of time dominated by resolution and strong will-power. Those fasting for God’s sake feel a thrill of joy, and spend every and each day in the excitement of a new re-union. They reach every morning in an indescribable feeling as if they were called to a new testing. You can discern on their faces a sign of humility mixed with solemnity, a feeling of nothingness before God together with serenity and seriousness and melancholy combined with a feeling of security. Their every act reflects spiritual peace and exhilaration coming from adherence to God’s will and confidence in Him, and sincerity and kindness acquired by being cleansed in the cascades of the Qur’an. As if created from light and consisting in only their shadows, they are very careful to give no one any harm or trouble.

By: Khalid Mahmood At this time when we experience occasions, of much sorrow and some contentment, we sense the promise in the advent of Ramadan, the month of mercy and forgiveness. In the climate of this month of light, we feel both spring and autumn at the same time in our inner worlds, seasons of lovely expectations and longing. With their profound, spiritual breezes, every sound and breath of air in Ramadan announces in a most exalted and exhilarating style all the pleasures we would like to taste in life and the hopes of good we deeply cherish. Coming like successive rays of light, the smiling days of Ramadan envelop us with the expectations, hopes and joys they carry from the worlds beyond, and present to us samples from Paradise. When Ramadan begins, our inner life, its thoughts and feelings, is renewed and strengthened. Breezes of mercy, coming in different wavelengths, unite with our hopes and expectations, and penetrate our hearts. In the enchanting days and illumined nights of Ramadan, we feel as if all the obstacles blocking our way to God are removed and the hills on that way are leveled. Like rain pouring on the earth, Ramadan comes with streams of meanings and emotions that water dried and thirsty hearts, making the inner worlds of people propitious for new meanings and conceptions. By means of the light of the days, hours and minutes of this blessed month, hearts attain such spiritual depth and become so purified that they never desire to leave its climate of peace. As Ramadan approaches, we live the delight of anticipation and preparation for it. The food and drink that come into our kitchens in the days before it comes, put us in mind of it with a thrill of expectation. And then it comes at last, laden with mercy and forgiveness. As soon as it honors us, each of us finds himself in a spiral of light rising toward the heavens and advances toward the Unknown Existent One in a new spiritual mood in the night-time and in another, different spiritual mood in daytime. We open our eyes to each of its days with a different solemnity and selfpossession and reach every evening in an enchanting, delightful serenity. The pleasant nights of Ramadan receive warmest welcome from all souls. Eyes look more deeply in them and people feel deeper love for each other. Everyone desires to do good to everyone and passions and ill-feeling are subjugated to a certain extent. In Ramadan everyone feels so much more attached to God and is so careful in his relations with others that it is impossible not to see this. Believing souls taste the contentment of belief more deeply and experience the blessing of the good morals prescribed by Islam and the spiritual ease of doing good to others. Moreover, they try to expand, to share, this contentment, blessing and ease with others. Since these souls at rest are convinced that one day will come when this life will end in an eternal happiness and whatever they suffer and sacrifice here for God’s sake will be returned with very great reward, they struggle against their animal appetites in a mood of doing an act of worship. The meals they take at sunset to break the fast give them the pleasure of worship and are followed by early night prayer with the addition of the supererogatory service of worship particular to Ramadan. The meals they take before dawn to start fasting are united with supererogatory night prayer (tahajjud) and become a dimension of their nearness to God. Streets are filled with the people going to and returning from
Respect and courtesy are so much a part of their nature that, even after a day of thirst and hunger and resisting their carnal desires, they remain gentle and purehearted. They display a mood shaped by fear and reverence, discipline and contentment, solemnity and politeness. They are respectful and reverent toward the Almighty and well-mannered and sincere toward one another. Their faces and eyes reflect different degrees and dimensions of depth of spiritual realms and are radiant with the lights of the unseen world. Though each individual may have been shaped by a different climate and different ideas,-all of them, including the intelligent and pure-hearted, those used to a disciplined, careful life and those a bit untidy and careless, the nervous and the calm, those very sensitive to problems of the age and those a little unfeeling, the rich and the poor, the happy and sorrowful, the healthy and the ill, the white and blackshare almost the same feelings in Ramadan. They reach the night and morning together, listen to the call to prayers and perform the prayers together, take the meals before dawn and break their fasts together. They feel together one of the two instances of rejoicing promised for those who fast [The Prophet said: There are two instances of rejoicing for one who
fasts: one when he breaks his fa fast, fa the other when he will receive the reward of fasting re in the Hereafter.] All A Muslims, whatever their nationality or country of origin or temperament or social status or physical state, come together and breathe the same ‘air’ in the climate of Ramadan. In it, their souls are shaped in a way particular to that climate, and they share a sort of deeply-felt happiness which can be experienced only by spirit beings. Ramadan has a fascinating effect on Muslims that leaves its positive imprints on even the souls of the poorest and most oppressed people. Ramadan envelops us with many beauties: the pleasure in the supererogatory prayers performed after the prescribed night service; consciousness of the blessings of Ramadan; the light that pours on us both from the heaven and from the lights that decorate the mosques; the nearness of the Creative Power and Its message of compassion and forgiveness whispered in our hearts. As if planned and commanded in order to kindle such feelings and thoughts in us, each element of the public rites in Ramadan causes the ‘strings’ of our heats to resonate: the calls made from minarets and the blessings called on the Prophet, upon him be peace and blessings, and the pronouncements of Divine Unity, Grandeur and Glory which resound in our ears, all prepare our souls for worship. They awake us to spiritual and celestial truths
and enable even the crudest soul to perform its duties of worship in the way those duties are meant to be performed. The voices rising from minarets meet with the voices of the inhabitants of the heavens and resound throughout the heavens and the earth. They penetrate our souls and take us through a climate of purest meanings and poetry, a realm of sweet imagination. In this pleasant atmosphere, we feel as if it is Ramadan which pours from the heavens, which is discerned on the faces of people and scents the air and is written in the lights of the mosques. Enchanted by this calm and peaceful atmosphere, we achieve a sort of infinitude and feel as if comprehending the whole of existence. Ramadan captivates particularly those open to eternity to such an extent that they experience nothing else than it. I remember well that during my childhood when there was as yet no electricity in cities, people walked to mosques with kerosene lamps in the darkness of night. We imagined that Ramadan was walking around in the alleys in the lights of those lamps. Under the influence of poetry, meaning and deep spirituality which Ramadan poured into our souls, we desired that it should never come to an end. Nevertheless, despite our heartfelt desire, it flew away and the festive day followed it with all its pomp.
O Allah. I fasted for You and I believe in You and I break myy ffast with Your sustenance
I intend to keep fast tomorrow in the month of Ramadan

F A I T H Book 35, Number 2398: Sahl b. Sa’d (Allah be pleased with him) said : When this verse was reveal- ed. “Eat and drink till the white streak becomes distinct from the dark streak for you,” the person who decided to observe fast tied on one of his feet a black thread and on the other a white thread. And he went on eating and drinking till he could distinguish (between their colour) on seeing them. It was after this that Allah reveal- ed (the words): min al-fajr. And they (the Muslims) came to know that (the word khait) refers to the night and day.
Life and Times of Hazrat Ali R.A.
Amongst the descendants of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S., Hazrat Ali R.A. belonged to the line of Quraish. He was the son of Abu Talib r.a., son of Abdul Muttalib of the distinguished tribe of Bani Hashim. It was his father Abu Talib who had nourished and brought up the Prophet S.A.W. His mother Fatima bint-e Asad was also a noble lady belonging to the tribe of Bani Hashim whom the Prophet S.A.W. regarded as his own mother. When the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), was thirty years old, Ali R.A. was born on 13th of Rajab. His parents were very happy on his birth but it was Prophet Muhammad (SAW). who was most particularly pleased to see the baby. The responsibility for bringing him up devolved directly on Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa S.A.W. Hazrat Ali R.A. was ten years old when Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa was formally called upon to convey the divine message. This is called Besat. Prophet Muhammad (SAW), had embarked upon a mission which was against the trend of the times, the prevailing environment, the practice of the entire city and of his own people and tribe. No one was prepared to extend a helping hand and cooperate with him. It was Ali R.A. who was foremost in testifying the claim of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and in reposing full faith in his mission. The other personality was that of Hazrat Khadijatul Kubra who acquired the honour of precedence in embracing Islam among the women. After some time Abu Talib left this world. The demise of his loving uncle broke the Prophet S.A.W’s heart. He made up his mind to migrate to Madinah. Thereupon the enemies unanimously decided to surround the house of the Prophet S.A.W’s at night and finally kill him. The Prophet S.A.W’s coming to know of it, called his cousin Ali R.A and told him about it saying, “My life can be saved if you sleep on my bed tonight covered with my mantle while I leave Makkah incognito.” Had it been some body else this news would have terrified him. But Ali R.A. expressed his gratitude to God that the life of the Prophet S.A.W’s. will be saved through him. Accordingly at night the Prophet S.A.W’left Makkah for Madinah and Ali ibne Abi Talib slept on his bed. All around the house blood thirsty enemies with drawn swords and spears were just waiting for the break of dawn to break into the house and kill the Prophet S.A.W’s. In the mean time Ali R.A. was resting peacefully and quietly on the bed and did not at all think of the lurking danger to his life. The enemies discovered in the morning that the person resting on the bed was Ali R.A. and not Muhammad S.A.W . The loyalty, courage and boldness with which Ali R.A. discharged his responsibilities is an example in itself. The first thing that the Prophet S.A.W did on his arrival in Madinah was to solemnize the marriage of his daughter, Fatima Zahra with Ali R.A.. The Prophet s.a. deeply loved his daughter and had so much respect for her that whenever she came to him he used to stand up in reverence. It was in the first year of Hijrah when the Prophet s.a. chose Ali R.A. for this honour. The wedding rites were performed with utmost simplicity. The daughter of the Prophet s.a. was married without any dowry from the Prophet S.A.W. It was the amount of her Mahar (dower) offered by Ali R.A. from which some household articles were purchased and given to Fatima. Later, Ali R.A. became the caliph. During his caliphate of nearly four years and nine months, Ali R.A. followed the way of the Prophet (saw)
and gave his caliphate the form of a spiritual movement and renewal and began many different types of reforms. Alas, this protagonist of peace, equality and Islamic values could not escape the malicious designs of the worldly people. In the morning of 19 of the month of Ramazan 40 A.H.while offering prayers in the mosque he was fatally wounded by a sword dipped in poison. His mercifulness, kindness and regard for equality of all human beings was such that when his assassin was brought before him with a pale face and tears rolling down his eyes, he was touched with compassion even for him and addressing his two son, Imam Hasan and Imam Husain said: “He is your prisoner. Do not treat him harshly. Give him the food that you yourself eat. If I recover, it will be upto me to punish him or to forgive him. But if I do not survive and you decide to avenge his crime, then strike him with sword only once as he had struck me once and in no case his hands or legs or any other part of his body should be cut off as it is against the teachings of Islam.” Ali R.A. spent two restless days on his sick bed in extreme pain and distress. Eventually the poison spread all over the body and he breathed his last on 21 of Ramazan at the time of morning prayer. Hasan R.A. and Husain R.A. performed the funeral rites and that prince of humanity was buried at Najaf at the back of the city of Kufa.
Hazrat Khadija (R.A)
Hazrat Khadija (R.A) daughter of Khuylaid and Fatima was born in Mecca in 555 CE and was a pious and worthy lady, who at the time of the pagan regime of the Arabs before Islam was well-known as “Tahireh” (Pure and Chaste Woman). She was well-known as a great and distinguished wealthy woman in the Arabian Peninsula. She had become a widow at an early age. He engaged herself in business by the assistance of others, who traded in partnership on her behalf. Therefore, she was looking for a trustworthy and honest man on whom she could rely completely with her capital for business. Hazrat Khadija (R.A) was well-aware of the glad tidings of the eminent coming of the Seal of the Prophets (SAW) through learned-men and spiritual leaders. Among them was her uncle Varaqa ibn Nofal, who was considered as a prominent Arab scientist. Hazrat Khadija (R.A) encouraged by the positive response of Muhammad (SAW) to her offer in accepting the responsibility to lead her business caravan, appointed Moyaser, her slave as agent to observe Muhammad’s (SAW) manner and conduct during the journey and to report his observations to her. When Hazrat Khadija (R.A) became interested in Prophet Muhammad (SAW), he was 25-years-old and already quite well-known for his integrity and honesty besides his outstanding quality as an exceptionally trustworthy man. In her proposal she offered him the management of her business. Hence she made a marriage proposal to him through his uncle Abu Talib, news of this proposal reached Abu Talib and the rest of the uncles. Abu Talib in an eloquent fashion executed the marriage contract, while Khadija’s (R.A) dowry came from her own wealth. Khadijah married the Holy Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) when she was 40 and he was 25 in 595 CE. They had six children: two sons and four daughters.”When none believed me, Khadijah did. She made me a partner in her wealth.” Those are the words of our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
about his wife. Khadijah lived with the prophet for 25 years and was his only wife during that time. When the revelations came from Allah and Muhammad (PBUH) was made the last prophet in 610 CE, it was Khadijah who accepted the faith and became the first Muslim. She was 55 years old at that time. Her acceptance of Islam greatly helped the spread of the religion among the Mecca residents. She stood by the prophet all the time. In moments of trial and difficulty, the prophet used to come to her and she consoled and comforted her husband and encouraged him. Khadijah’s wealth was used for the cause of Islam. The prophet and Khadijah had to bear the death of their sons Qasim and Abdullah in their infancy and in the fifth year of prophethood, their daughter Ruqaiyyah left them and migrated to Abyssinia (Ethiopia) with her husband. The Quraysh did all they could to stop Muhammad’s (PBUH) propagation of Islam. Hazrat Khadijah was his source of encouragement and comfort. She also had to bear enormous strain and suffering during the boycott at Sha’bi (the valley of) Abu Talib for three years. The great Muslim woman passed away on Ramadan 10th in the tenth year of Hijrah (prophethood), 620 CE, at the age of 65. Her death was a great loss to the prophet. He loved Khadijah so dearly that after her death, he used to remember her often. He said: “I cannot bear the scene, I believe that Allah has kept much good in it. Young Muslim Sisters should know how devoted Khadijah (R.A) was to her husband and how much she did for him for the cause of Allah. Any Muslim of today would feel proud to have such a wife. The world could be changed by great Muslim women like Hazrat Khadijah (R.A).

He also explained how ICNA-Relief strives to keep administrative and overhead cost as low as possible. He also outlined the strategy of ICNA Relief Canada. •To assist and empower the people in need, locally and internationally •Develop effective disaster and emergency response domestically & internationally •Donors’ Satisfaction & Trust •Develop highly responsive professional leadership, staff & volunteers •Effectively utilize the means of mass communication Domestic Programs: •Muslim Family Services (MFS) •Food Banks •Emergency Relief and Financial Help (ER) •Seniors Support •Funeral Support •Matrimonial Services •Foster Parenting •Youth Leadership and Development Program (YLDP) International Programs: •Education for poor and needy
•Medical Health Care Program •Water for Life during Drought •Zabiha Program •Skill Development program •Orphan Sponsorship Program •Helthcare •Women Empowerment Program Br Riam Al-Safadi (A representative from Syrian community) who recently came from Syria from a relief mission presented about the situation in Syria. Since the conflict started huge number of people have been affected and forced to live in refugee camps because their homes have been completely destroyed. According to UN over two millions are living in refugee camps inside and outside Syria. 120,000 died and over 200,000 injured since the war started. Lots of human lives could have been saved if there was medical treatment available. Over 75% hospitals have been destroyed in the area. Because of unavailability of medical treatment even minor wounds turns infectious and causing deaths. ICNA Relief launched a massive campaign two years ago to help our brothers and sisters in Syria. We raised and spent $500,000 on emergency food relief, medical supplies and equipment and children education. ICNA Relief also supports close to 3000 orphan kids in different parts of the world every year through its “orphan sponsorship
program”. Funds raised for this cause are spent on building orphanages and provision of food, education and lodging of orphans. Over two hundred concerned community members from all races and walk of life attended the Surrey, July 6th program and helped our brothers and sisters across the globe by their donations and prayers. Guest speaker shaikh Ahmed Shihab highlighted the importance of helping these brothers and sisters in need. He quoted that we should put our self in the shoes of those brothers and sisters who are going trough hardship to get the feeling and motivation to help them. He also added that helping these brothers and sisters is actually helping our selves in the hereafter inshaAllah. ICNA Relief Canada wants to thank all brothers and sisters who attended the event and those who had intention but couldn’t attend for any reasons. Syria’s war widows fight for survival
The thick black veil that covers fatima’s slender body from head to toe has done little to stop the constant accusations from her community that she is too open, too audacious and, even, too masculine. The 36-year-old syrian who fled a brutal war that ripped through her village of qusayr, destroying her home and killing her husband, is now facing a lone fight for survival with her two children in one of the poorest villages in lebanon. She is one of more than 145,000 syrian refugee women who, according to un figures, are the sole breadwinners for their families, struggling to provide food and shelter for their children and often facing harassment, humiliation and isolation. A report released by the un refugee agency, unhcr, on tuesday, says that one in four syrian households living in four major countries of refuge - lebanon, jordan, iraq and egypt- are headed by lone women. Of the dozens of syrian refugees
camps in arsal, fatima lives in one of the most densely-populated. The “mothers of martyrs” is a complex of 113 concrete, fourby-four metre rooms, where a few hours of electricity is a luxury and the water tank is a 15 minute walk away. After the death of her husband who died under torture in a syrian regime-run jail - she found herself, not only in a fight for survival, but in constant conflict with her new community as she tried to make the ravaged camp a fit home for her children. “Every time i voice my opinion on how to improve the aid distribution in the camp, the syrian men in the village shut me up. Because i am a woman, i am being told my opinions are worthless even though i am more educated than most of them,” fatima told al jazeera. “They say i am too open and too manly because i leave the house and speak out, even though my
clothing has nothing to do with openness,” she said, as her black robe trailed behind her along a muddy and unpaved road. ‘Prey to men’ According to the unhcr report “woman alone: the fight for survival by syria’s refugee women”, which is based on the personal testimony of 135 women, one in three female refugees said they were too scared or overwhelmed to leave home, and 60 percent expressed feelings of insecurity. Many women complain of regular
verbal harassment. “A woman alone in egypt is prey to all men,” diala, who lives in alexandria, was quoted as saying. “I was living in dignity, but now no one respects me because i’m not with a man,” zahwa, in jordan, said. She said was even harassed by refugees when collecting food coupons. Om mohmmad, who now lives in the mother of martyrs camp after she lost her husband to the war and was separated from her family, told al jazeera that she is even
scared to take her children to the outdoor bathroom at night because the men in the village view women who leave the house after dusk with suspicion. “I do not want to hear hurtful words in the streets on the way”, she told al jazeera as she sat in her shelter, one of those four-by-four metre rooms. The 38-year-old mother of five depends solely on a stipend from aid organisations for survival. She breaks her fast during the holy month of ramadan with her five children over a dinner of crusty bread and canned food, a striking contrast to the long and rich dinner table that her family united over before the war blighted their lives. In common with om mohmmad, one third of the women interviewed by unhcr said they did not have enough to eat. And only one fifth of them have paid work with many finding it hard to get a job, or simply having too many other responsibilities.
“Many have reached the end of their savings – even selling off their wedding rings,” the report says. “When i was living in syria, i did not have to even worry about going shopping for bread. My husband brought everything,” om mohammad told al jazeera, tears filling her eyes. “Now i am running around from one place to another to fetch stuff for my children to eat.” ‘Humiliated for losing’ Before the conflict forced syrian women into exile, many of them depended heavily on financial security and protection provided by the men in their families. In some cases, their lifestyles were such that they did not even go shopping alone. Often they lived in areas where other members of their extended family were nearby – syrian families are traditionally very tight-knit. But the civil war has torn those families apart, forcing at least three million people – mostly women and children - to flee the country. “Syrian refugee women are the glue holding together a broken society,” angelina jolie, unhcr’s special envoy, has said. “Their strength is extraordinary, but they are struggling alone. Their voices are an appeal for help and protection which cannot be ignored.” Unhcr has called for urgent new action from donors, host governments and aid agencies. “For hundreds of thousands of women, escaping their ruined homeland was only the first step in a journey of grinding hardship,” antonio guterres, un high commissioner for refugees, said. “They have run out of money, face daily threats to their safety and are being treated as outcasts for no other crime than losing their men to a vicious war. “It’s shameful. They are being humiliated for losing everything.” Source: aljazeera

McCallum announced that he will be running for a fourth term
Surrey BC - Former Mayor of Surrey Doug Surrey, McCallum announced his intention to run again for the Mayor’s chair in a press conference held in front of the former City Hall this morning. Inspired to put his name forward by four key issues - crime, fiscal responsibility, transit and electoral reform - McCallum classifies the coming four years as critical to building a prosperous future for the City of Surrey. “With such rapid growth, Surrey requires decisive leadership to tackle some very difficult issues,” says McCallum. “People are feeling unsafe in their neighbourhoods, spending and debt is out of control, transit services are severely lacking, and a ward system that would help cultural and regional representation on City Council has never been seriously considered. The time for action is now.” In a short address to supporters and media, McCallum offered a number of statistics that
helped to confirm his decision to return to politics. The City of Surrey just established a tragic record, with homicides rising 127 per cent from 2012 to 2013. Between 2012 and 2013, the city’s debt rose by 40 %, or over $70 million. The City of Surrey will become BC’s largest city within a decade, will increase in population to 750,000, and yet has had no major infrastructure added since Expo 86. Ethnic minorities represent 52.6 per cent of Surrey’s population, but never has this diversity been proportionally
represented on City Council. McCallum says that he intends to make this campaign about the issues, and will present detailed policy proposals to address such glaring problems. “I am motivated to offer immediate solutions that will give the people of Surrey a clear idea of the different candidates and our priorities, approaches and ability to make an impact,” adds McCallum. “People have approached me for many months about these four issues, and I think that it is time to set priorities and
put these concerns ahead of politics.” Over the coming months, McCallum hopes to initiate healthy debate and an exchange of ideas in order to give people a real choice about how they want to move the city forward. “I am humbled by the support and encouragement I have received from every corner of this great city, and I intend to live up to the expectations that come with a demand for experienced leadership.”
Justin Trudeau Liberal Party Leader at the Islamic Foundation Toront o
As Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada I’ve been fortunate enough to travel from coast to coast to coast, meeting Canadians and sharing in important celebrations and milestones. On Sunday, June 29, I had the pleasure of sitting down with members of the Muslim community for the first Iftaar (breaking of the fast) at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto. This was a wonderful chance to share in a meal and talk to members of the commu-
nity about their faith and the significance of the holy month of Ramadan: a time for fasting, prayer, spiritual reflection, charity, and friendship. I saw first-hand the spirit of the community by visiting the kitchen and the volunteers who prepare meals daily during this holy month. Having visited several Mosques before, I know that the generosity of the Muslim community extends throughout the year. Whether it is through hot soup kitchens, supporting programs aimed at helping our young people, or raising money for local hospitals, the compassion and generosity of the Muslim community uplifts us all. I was truly touched by the warm welcome from the families and volunteers I met. It being two days before Canada Day, I couldn’t
help but think how this event embodies the character and values that make this country great. I am proud to live in as diverse and vibrant a country as ours, where our differences are celebrated as the source of our shared strength. Iftaar is a reminder of the importance of ensuring that every Canadian – regardless of background, age, race, or faith – is included in our shared prosperity, and our shared future. I am thankful for the diversity and religious freedoms which we enjoy in Canada, and I am proud of the accomplish-
ments and contributions made by Canada’s thriving Muslim community. I wish my Muslim brothers and sisters a blessed Ramadan, and pledge to continue standing up for all Canadians to protect the values that unites us.

BEING YOURSELF! Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Initially, to be true to yourself means to act in accordance with who you are and what you believe. If you know and love yourself, you will find it effortless to be true to yourself. Just as you cannot love anyone else until you love yourself, you cannot be true to anyone else until you are true to yourself. Be who you are! Have the courage to accept yourself as you really are, not as what someone else thinks you should be. Do not take action or pretend to be someone else for the sake of gaining acceptance and being liked by others. Many young people believe that when they do things to please their peers, such as drink when they shouldn't, or behave and party in inappropriate ways, they will be popular and liked. They go against the advice of their parents or their own common sense only to find themselves in trouble and not accomplishing what they set out to do. When you do things that are not genuine or a reflection of the real you, you will not be happy with yourself and will end up confused. You'll be confused because you won't know whom to please, or how and when. Self-respect comes from being true to who you really are and from acting in accordance with your fundamental nature. When you respect yourself, others will
respect you. They will sense that you are strong and capable of standing up for yourself and your beliefs. When you are true to yourself, you allow your individuality and uniqueness to shine through. You respect the opinions of others but do not conform to stereotypes or their expectations of you. To be true to yourself takes a lot of courage. It requires you to be introspective, sincere, open-minded and fair. It does not mean that you are inconsiderate or disrespectful of others. It means that you will not let others define you or make decisions for you that you should make for yourself. Be true to the very best that is in you and live your life consistent with your highest values and aspirations. Those who are most successful in life have dared to creatively express themselves and in turn, broaden the experiences and perspectives of everyone else. Take pride of who you are because you are unique!! shabnam@skcounselling.ca

YOUTH
STRATEGIES FOR SOLUTIONS Ethan Hunt’s mission (Tom Cruise- Mission Impossible 4), that he’s already accepted, is to pacify a diabolical mastermind bent on starting World War III is. To do this, Ethan needs access to the highlysecured server room nestled within the world’s tallest building, the Burj Kahlifa All “safe” options to enter this room are useless. The last available course of action is a ‘take or leave it option’ – entering from the outside… And off he goes, in Ethan Hunt fashion, scaling the building, unaided by a harness – but by futuristic suction-gloves. A glove malfunctions, leaving Ethan dangling 3,000 feet from death. Oh, did I mention that a skin-stripping sandstorm is just off the horizon, gunning directly towards him? I would say Ethan Hunt has a – “problem”…. Whether in the cinematic world or in this “real” one, when wishful expectations fail to match what actually occurs in reality, that’s when we realize a problem exists. But, truth be told, the problem isn’t usually the problem; it’s how we deal with it. This is key. We all have reflexive responses for dealing with common situations which arise. Some work well, others don’t; the interesting thing is, we continue to employ tactics we know are useless, like ignoring, making excuses, blaming others for a problem, etc. and keep getting the same empty results. It’s like beating one’s head against the wall – stop! Recognizing that a problem exists also presupposes that a solution is present, though hidden – temporarily. Albert Einstein famously said, “…The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them!...” In other words, if we are to unearth solutions for what we perceive to be an existing issue of concern, then a revolutionary perspective, a new way of thinking needs to be exercised. We can start by first defining what the problem is. This requires several things: One, we take some responsibility for the issue at hand. Simply put, what was your role in making the problem exist? What did or didn’t you do? For example, your consistent cell-phone usage while driving consistently gets you pulled over by a police-officer who routinely gives you
Failure versus Feedback We’ve all seen movies where the hero fires a heat-seeking missile at the villain. But the agile villain constantly dodges it, causing the missile to fail in connecting with its target. But the missile, as if it has a mind of its own - self- corrects - and gets back on its aggressive course…and does connect with its target. Failure versus feedback can be likened to this missile. Instead of calling your results, a failure, think of them as - feedback. It’s this information feedback you use to re-calibrate, so that when you get back on course, you’re armed with more information as how to navigate, to get things done, so you accomplish your goal.
Humans Have the Resources to Affect Change
a ticket. Blaming or arguing with the officer does not solve the issue. Taking some responsibility for the act offers you a new vantage point from which you can *see solutions for your problem. Second, focus on solutions. Visualize the outcome; ask solutions-based questions, instead of riveting your attention on the problem, thus feeding it unnecessary energy. Adding to the example above, instead of the driver paying attention to the anger and frustration triggered by receiving the ticket, he/she can focus on safe driving, and ask solution-based questions such as, “How can I eliminate getting tickets and drive safely on the road?” (Can you construct additional creative solutionsbased questions?) Third, we’ve either said these words, or have heard someone say them, “I need to get some space, some distance from the problem!” A hidden power resides in this statement. However you do it, physically or mentally, putting distance between you and the scenario in question shifts your state of mind and perspective, thus helping you to find creative solutions. Adopting useful beliefs are also important when searching for creative solutions. Beliefs aren’t “wrong or right,” per se; they are just useful, because they act as discriminating doorways, halting incompatible thoughts, ideas, and behaviors from entering one’s mind-space. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) contains many useful beliefs that can be applied to solutions-based thinking. Some of the following are:
Most of us have become accustomed to doing things a certain way. This oftentimes can lead us to believe that no other approaches exist to get the same task done, and that problems are bound to occur when this singular tactic can no longer be used. As previously stated, beliefs are neither wrong nor right, but useful. Finding ourselves in a pinch is no excuse for staying there. Adopting the belief that we have the ability and power to influence our outcome is a good step in the right direction. For example, Ethan Hunt, after having gained access to the serverroom, now must urgently get back to his team – asap! However, from the looks of things, he’s in some serious trouble:… Both of his futuristic climbing gloves (the only climbing gear he has) are destroyed, he’s several-thousand feet up, a dreaded sand-storm is minutes away, and he can’t use the elevators.
What’s he to do? If action reveals character, then it’s clear from witnessing Ethan Hunt’s previous exploits that he possesses certain abilities: He has the mental prowess to push aside fears; he can prioritise, focus and he’s always committed to a cause. These qualities are what Ethan accesses and utilizes…Ethan Hunt straps himself to on one end of a fire-hose, throws the other end out the window and races down the side of the building, … escaping, without the use of magical powers, but by taking advantage of resources that are already within him. Like Ethan, we, too, can utilize the built-in resources unique to each of us, and also what’s within our control to discover solutions. Examples of people doing such things, refusing let their circumstances limit or imprison them, are abundant.

22 BOOK REVIEW Antidote for the Vulnerable Ramadan 13, 1435 July 11, 2014
By TariqMjaved ( Toronto) Following is my review on book entitled “Devotion and Defiance: My Journey in Love, Faith and Politics Author: Humaira Awais Shahid with Kelly Horan” Published by: W W Norton & Company: Initially, the genius author (Humaira) a university professor taught English literature but she preferred to discuss women issues, because the culture of taking advantage of the weaker by the stronger was unacceptable by her, so she chose to give her students an empowering vision of womanhood. After marrying Ednan, she was invited to join her father in law Mr. Shahid’s newspaper empire, where Ednan was already involved helping his dad. She started taking care of the “women’s section” of “Khabrain,” one of Pakistan’s leading Urdu newspapers. She wrote editorials and articles regarding the battered women and the abused girls. With the ‘helpline set up,’ the silent ‘cases of abuse’ started emerging in the office of “Khabrain” on a much faster rate. A team of investigators helped the author pin point area of violation, abuser and the abused parties. After the diagnosis, the author used to take action. Acid attacks on women, the trading of girls as currency in
tribal disputes, and other abuses needed immediate attention. Through her editorials she let the world know what the problem really was. She targeted three areas: the customary vani in rural areas, using girls and women as collateral for loans, and the revengeful acid attacks on the vulnerable women/girls/wives for disloyalty or alleged cheating. In search of answers, she never hesitated to personally visit the rural Punchayats, and the involved abused women and girls despite the tough opposition of the close relatives. And, she usually succeeded in digging out the facts of the case. The author, as the dedicated advocate for women’s rights, made her way to win one of the reserve seats in the provincial parliament of the Punjab, where she struggled to protect the vulnerable women, girls, and the poor. Now she managed as editor of the Vista Magazine of the popular English Newspaper, “The Post.” The fact: Poverty makes the people vulnerable and the predators are always looking for hunting them at will; hence, the “have-nots” usually end up getting trapped one way or another. Thus, battling for the noble cause has always been author’s agenda with passion. The “God fearing author” has quoted in her book quite a few of relevant verses from the noble Qur’an where needed; she includes the last sermon of Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him in the book as well. Referring to the author, the revenue committee members would say “the mountain is coming,” while bureaucrats used to say Humaira is “the unmanageable woman in
Pakistan.” “There is always light at the end of the tunnel;” is the message of hope given by the author. Criminally motivated private money lenders are actually loan sharks who are hell bent to exploit the poor class. Luckily, the results-oriented brilliant author has been in touch with such vulnerable people face to face. The author loves righting the wrongs committed against the most vulnerable people. With legal cover in place, the author has paved the way - giving the green light for all concerned to go for helping the needy without hesitation or fear of reprisals. The trend is the rich is becoming richer while the richer is becoming the richest - all due to mindset of aggressive behavior at the cost of exploitation of the vulnerable society at the hands of rogue feudal system and the network of underworld dons/ anti social rascals. The atmosphere of insecurity of the ‘have nots’ can’t be reversed as long as the culture of “Might is Right” prevails. But the stinky status quo would change if the like minded people come on board with the author. Author’s inspirational autobiography is a blend of her personal, social and political life. Having attained a position of influence as the provincial parliamentarian, she went ahead pushing for legislation on acid crimes, defying those who discouraged her saying it was impossible. She managed well to bring the divided people on single page in order to find support for the Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Act. The author had one on one meeting with high profile dignitaries including Pres. Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, the cabinet members and Gov. Maqbool
of the Punjab in connection with the long pending bill to curb private money lending. Yet, nothing happened beyond lip service. Surprisingly, after so many extensions in the four years period, the private money lending bill was abruptly passed in just four and a half minutes after the demise of author’s mentor Eddie. Finally, the desired legislation was passed to outlaw the private money lending practice and enactments were in place for the protection of young girls and the vulnerable women. The dedicated author’s life is a lesson for others about surviving the tough challenges It’s established that even the fragile gender with a perfect head is strong enough to start creating an abuse-free environment for others. I strongly recommend everyone to purchase the book, as it’s ‘a must read’ to learn more of the author’s eye opener biography.

H E A L T H
IFTAR --- A PERFECT MEAL
With Ramadan approaching, it’s probably the right time to think of how you can make Iftar a perfectly balanced meal for you and your family, since it is probably the most substantial one you’ll have every day! A balanced and healthy Iftar will provide your body with the necessary without adding unnecessary calories, in comparison to a large Iftar which can often lead to a feeling of discomfort in your stomach. Here are some tips on how to make sure that your Iftar is balanced and healthy for you and your loved ones: Make healthy food choices: Choose wisely from within the different food groups which include grain products, fruits and vegetables, meats and legumes, dairy and alternatives. You can also benefit further by varying your intake from within the food groups. For instance, choose wholegrain bread, brown pasta or long grain rice more often. Consume lots of vegetables and a minimum of 2 servings of fruit groups. Have lean meat cuts, fish and your skinless chicken more often. Switch from full fat milk and dairy products to low fat options, which would still provide you with the calcium that you need, minus the extra calories. And go slow with the usage of oils, and enjoy lighter sweet options! Prepare your food using healthy cooking
methods: Try to bake your fatayer or sambosa instead of having them fried. Steam your vegetables for few minutes to enjoy their crunchy taste; this would also retain their vitamin content which could be otherwise lost with prolonged cooking. Cook your main dishes with a variety of vegetables, cut down on fat and salt which would make it healthier for your heart and wellbeing in general. Focus on soups as they provide you with the fluids that you have lost during your fast. It also serves as a great source of fibre, vitamins and minerals which will help boost your immunity Control the size of your portions: Eating big food portions might lead to weight gain. It could also result in a distended stomach and a feeling of discomfort. So remember to be moderate by controlling your portions to accommodate the variety of food that will be available during your Iftar. Balance your dish: For a well-balanced meal, try dividing your main course plate into 3 portions: one quarter with carbohydrates and their alternatives, another with meats and their alternatives, and half your plate for salad and cooked vegetables. This will help cover your body’s nutritional requirements without necessarily adding extra calories to the food you are consuming. Include the essentials: Add a tablespoon

of olive oil to your salad to enhance your heart health. Drink laban as a fresh drink rather than sweetened juices or soft drinks, because laban will provide you with a generous quantity of calcium to maintain healthy bones. Also include dried fruits which serve as an instant source of energy after a long day of fasting. Vary what you eat: Sticking to one kind of food for Iftar may prevent your body from having enough nutrients for its proper functions. When your food intake is varied, you
are more likely to take in all the nutrients you need. And for more health benefits, vary your Iftar choices within your week and month. Iftar is a special gathering that you enjoy with your family and friends. This is why it is essential that you make wise food choices, to feel healthier and fulfilled. But most importantly, having a healthy Iftar everyday will help you and your family stay nourished and energetic all through this holy and blessed season.
5 WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY WHILE FASTING FOR RAMADAN Fasting during the month of Ramadan can be good for your health if it’s done correctly. When the body is starved of food, it starts to burn fat so that it can make energy. This can lead to weight loss. However, if you fast for too long your body will eventually start breaking down muscle protein for energy, which is unhealthy. Dr Razeen Mahroof, an anaesthetist from Oxford, says there’s a strong relationship between diet and health.“Ramadan isn’t always thought of as being an opportunity to lose weight because the spiritual aspect is emphasised more generally than the health aspect,” he says. “However, it’s a great chance to get the physical benefits as well.” During Ramadan, practicing Muslims change their eating habits dramatically. Questioned by Relaxnews, nutritionist Charlotte Debeugny provided her recommendations to religious fasters looking to make the most out of this festive time of year.

Why is our Young Generation not interested in getting married? This is a very common social problem of our society. Parents are worried about their children’s interest in married life. visable to stay out of the sun, spend most of the day in cool places and avoid strenuous exercise. Eating fruit before sunrise is a good idea, as the water it contains helps to hydrate the body during the day. Be careful not to drink too much water at once. Coffee and tea are to be avoided, as they can actually lead to increased thirst and dehydration. For additional energy, try drinking smoothies or fruit juice diluted with water.
Adapt fasting to your physical condition Before starting a fast, it is necessary to talk to a doctor, particularly for seniors, diabetics taking medication to control their insulin levels, pregnant women and pre-adolescent children. Those with compromised health who still wish to fast for Ramadan should consult their doctor to develop a fasting plan adapted to their condition. At the first symptom

THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION FOR MUSLIMS B H By Harun Y Yahya h As we know, madrasahs are one of Islamic societies’ oldest education-teaching institutions. Before madrasahs, education and teaching activities in the Islamic world were carried out in places of such varying names and characters as masjids, mosques, scholars’ homes, palaces and bookshops. Since mosques and masjids in particular were used for instruction in the essentials of religion, they were also employed for education and teaching purposes. According to Islamic history, following the first revelation to our Prophet (saas), the first Muslims who converted to Islam secretly assembled in the house of al-Arqam, one of the companions of the Prophet, where they were instructed and taught by our Prophet (saas). It is said that this is how the school and madrasah were born in Islam. The Dar-al-Arqam (House of Arqam), known as the first madrasah in Islam, is still preserved in memory of those days. With the founding of the Islamic State in Medina by our Prophet (saas) following the Hegira, the Masjid Nabawi constructed there became a centre of Islamic education and teaching. Muslims would gather there, study the Qur’an and Islam and improve themselves. The gradual increase in need caused our Prophet (saas) to found other education centres in different parts of the city. Madrasah education continued in the same way during the period of the four caliphs. Not only religious knowledge was taught in the madrasahs; sciences of the time, such as astronomy, mathematics, geometry and medicine were also given an important place. Later still, courses in Western languages, Persian, history, geography, astronomy, mechanics, trigonometry, chemistry, painting, physical training, hygiene, social sciences, philosophy, economics and finance were added to the curriculum. These institutions continued to be
kknown as ““medreses” d ” dduring i th the ti time off th the Turks. The Nizamiyah madrasahs opened by Sultan Alparslan’s vizier Nizam al-Mulk during the Great Seljuk Empire and named after him are very well known. Following this new line adopted by the Seljuk Empire, there was a rush to open madrasahs just about everywhere in the Islamic world. In the 13th and 14th centuries, centres such as Cairo, Damascus, Basra and Bukhara, and particularly the Transoxania region, became the most important powers in the development of Ottoman institutions of learning under the influence of the madrasahs they possessed. Their instruction was very definitely one of the major factors in the success of the Ottoman Empire, one of the greatest empires in the world and which survived for six centuries. A Muslim needs to know the Qur’an in order to correctly understand and interpret the world, human beings, natural events and everything in the universe. Knowing for what purpose Allah created the universe, human beings and all other living things is of the greatest importance from the point of view of appreciating Him properly. Engaging in activities based solely on artificial knowledge, without a knowledge of the Qur’an and without considering the hidden aspects of events, cannot lead to productive results. In the Qur’an, Allah summons humanity to investigate and reflect upon the heavens, the earth, mountains, stars, plants, seeds, animals, the alternation of the night and the day, the creation of man, the rain and many other created things. Examining these, man comes to recognize the artistry of Allah’s creation in the world around him, and ultimately, to know our Creator, Who created the entire universe and everything in it from nothing.
“S i ” offers ff th d bby which hi h th i “Science” a method the universe, and all the beings therein, may be examined to discover the artistry in Allah’s creation, thereby communicating it to mankind. Religion, therefore, encourages science, adopting it as a tool by which to study the subtleties of Allah’s creation. Religion not only encourages scientific study, but also permits that, supported by the truths revealed through religion, scientific research be conclusive and expeditious. The reason being, that religion is the only source to provide accurate and definitive answers as to how life and the universe came into being. As such, if initiated upon a proper foundation, research will reveal the truths regarding the origin of the universe and the organization of life, in the shortest time, and with minimum effort and energy. Science can only achieve true results if it adopts the aim of studying the infinite might of Allah and the proofs of creation in the universe, and if it pursues its activities solely in that light. Only if science is properly directed, if it is kept on a correct course in other words, can it become a vehicle whereby mankind achieves useful information and progress. As stated by Albert Einstein, considered one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century, “science without religion is lame”, which is to say, that science, unguided by religion, cannot proceed correctly, but rather, wastes much time in achieving certain results, and worse, is often inconclusive. In the event that the purpose behind the creation of man, the transitory nature of this world, the fact that what matters is the life of the hereafter, death, the certain existence of destiny and the hereafter, the fact that every individual will have to account for his deeds, and the existence of heaven and hell are all fully known, then this will shape the individual’s way of looking at events, his way of living and his
ti tto th t hhe encounters. t If th reactions the events these truths are not known, then even if a person receives the very best education in the very best schools and/or participates in academic studies at the very highest level, that education will still not be enough. That is because the important thing is for the individual to have a lifestyle and moral values which are pleasing to Allah. This world is very transitory and is created as a place of testing. The individual is tested here, and will receive a recompense in the hereafter based on the moral values and behaviour he displayed in the life of this world. This is an unavoidable fact for all people. For that reason, as well as receiving a modern scientific education the individual should also be immersed in religious matters. That is because someone who has adopted the moral values of the Qur’an and comprehended the religion will use this knowledge and technology he has learnt in the manner most pleasing to Allah, and thus for the benefit of mankind. SUCCESS THROUGH DIVERSITY In the often heated debate over the integration and social recognition of fellow citizens with a migrant background, it is still the case that positive aspects of the integration of German citizens of foreign heritage are acknowledged far too rarely. The fact that nowadays many Germans with migrant roots work successfully as teachers, scientists and journalists, as well as in business and sport – to mention just a few vocations – is unfortunately only ever mentioned in passing in the media. This is a pity, because these are the just the kind of positive examples that can motivate young immigrants or youngsters with migrant roots to strive for social integration. Take Mesut Özil, for example. For youngsters with Turkish origins he is not only a hero with whom they share a similar background, he’s also a role model. The German Football Federation (DFB) only realised this just over 14 years ago. It then established new talent scout programmes aimed primarily at children from migrant families. In the 1990s, the German national squad was a thoroughly Teutonic entity, with players like Klinsmann, Matthäus, Möller and Völler. The DFB’s new measures began in parallel to the reform of Germany’s citizenship laws, and later introduced new players to the national team who represented a quite different image of the country. By the time of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Ger-
many, the team looked much more diverse: David Odonkor, Jens Nowotny and Lukas Podolski were among the new faces on the national squad. But in this regard a new high point was reached with the following World Cup in South Africa in 2010, when 11 players on the 23-member team had foreign roots. Klose, Podolski, Trochowski, Özil, Taşçı , Gómez, Khedira, Aogo, Boateng, Cacau and Marin now reflected multicultural Germany in soccer – a symbol of intercultural coexistence and solidarity in a modern German society. There are those who might say that such a development was bound to come about. Germans with a migrant background, who constitute about 16 percent of Germany’s population of around 82 million, should after all be represented in a variety of social contexts, including the national team. But until the end of the 1990s, this was not yet something that could be taken for granted. Only when the new millennium began did German society begin to view itself predominantly as a country of immigration. Consequently, it took a while for this multicultural self-image to trickle down to the national football team. Barely had this image taken hold when people began to look askance at the conduct of these players when the national anthem was being played. The question of why Mesut Özil doesn’t sing the anthem, for example, preoccupied both the
tabloids and specialist sports magazines in equal measure. An intensive discussion was also conducted in the media over why, of all the different sports, there were so many German footballers with a migrant background. As is so often the case, the response was a lazy generalisation: that soccer was just a sport for dummies. Children with a migrant background were focusing on football because of their comparatively low level of education – and they didn’t need to be clever to do that. But this ignorant view overlooks the fact that top players like Özil or Khedira, who are doubtless among the best footballers in the world, showed greater talent and ability in their youth than many Germans. To be a soccer professional at international level
requires not only an immense competitive spirit and talent, but also the ability to withstand pressure, and a personal and collective sensitivity – traits that completely dispel all the usual clichés applied to sportsmen and sportswomen with a migrant background. Özil and his team colleagues not only represent multicultural Germany: they also serve as popular role models within German society. This means soccer should be afforded greater appreciation as an important and effective force for integration. Although a recent education report ascertained that people from migrant backgrounds are still struggling within Germany’s education system, this does not compromise the value of German soccer as a model of successful integration. Instead of generally downgrading positive examples of integration, we should be doing more to establish the exact causes of these educational deficits. Our society must also begin to honour the strengths of German citizens with migrant roots. In soccer, this is exactly what appears to have worked. Reservations were overcome by strength, talent and team spirit. This positive example should not only serve as a model for sport, but also for business or education. We must finally understand that success is accomplished first and foremost through diversity. Source: Qantara
