Does Death Penalty Help?
Though the likelihood of executing an innocent person is too strong to be ignored, yet the death penalty saves lives of potential victims in future. In other words, there is taking of certain risks in exchange for safety. The opponents of death sentence claim lots of innocent people are wrongly executed because of the flawed methodology employed for evidence gathering by the investigators. In fact, the resulted delaying tactics involve a number of loopholes that are disguisedly advantageous for the offenders who manage to walk away free. The delayed justice is no justice as it is caused by the obsolete/age old procedure in the judicial system. Hence, there is a state of compromised merit system leading to lack of transparency. Unless the executive/ the judicial administrators take extra precautions, the innocent people and their rights would continue to remain unprotected. And, in some case, the chronic condition tends to cost their lives of innocent people needlessly. Furthermore, there are those who argue that the capital punishment amounts to brutalizing; some label the penalty as “legalized murder.” Nevertheless, there is certain benefit of having deterred the potential offenders or repeat criminals through death penalty, thus it’s absolutely essential to protect the society. Legally speaking, capital punishment is still part of the law, which means that as long as parliament does not amend the law, Pakistan is under no obligation to “not to carry out sentences” awarded under it. Maybe, Pakistan is liable as a signatory to the international conventions, but is under no obligation or pressure to not executing those
who have been tried and found guilty. Admittedly, there are certain economic benefits of extremely high value, as the GSP Plus status was given by the European Union to Pakistan. The problem is if the moratorium is not lifted, the terrorism can’t be dealt with effectively. In other words, there is more benefit in going ahead with hanging the terrorists along with their abettors and facilitators. It’s about time for executing those who have been awarded the death penalty after they have been heard at all levels, right from the trial court to the superior courts, and they have also gone ahead unsuccessfully with appeals exhausting review petitions as well. After their sentences are confirmed through a prescribed sequence of events, there isn’t much left to save them from getting hanged. The question arises for protection for the innocent: The Fair Trial Act and the Protection of Pakistan Act will actually protect innocent people from prosecution. The Fair Trial Act provides the state the opportunity to identify actual suspects: people against whom evidence is collected through surveillance that is considerably accurate. Yet again, it all depends on the lines on which a thorough investigation has been carried out to collect genuine intelligence permissible as evidence in the court. Religiously speaking: The Quran regarding the death penalty clearly states,”...Take not life, which God has made sacred, except by way of justice and law. Thus does He command you, so that you may learn wisdom” (6:151). Therefore, the death penalty (capital punishment) is a reasonable option to save potential victims’ lives. Furthermore, with regard to legal-
ity of capital punishment, Pakistan is ranked fifth after the People’s Republic of China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United States. The fact is European Union has no problem with it, so it continues to do business with Iran, Saudi Arabia, China and USA. Actually, “Human Rights Watch” opposes the death penalty in all circumstances because of its inherent cruelty. Pakistan’s use of the death penalty is inconsistent with international human rights law, according to statements of United Nations human rights experts and various UN bodies. Human rights law upholds every human being’s inherent right to life; it limits the death penalty to those serious crimes that result in death. In Pakistan’s case, terrorists’ activity has killed many thousands which is very serious matter indeed. Killing innocent children by the barbaric terrorists is highly intolerable. There was an expired moratorium which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government did not extend, however, a ban on executions of over 8000 convicts awaiting execution was maintained. Nevertheless, the lifting of the moratorium in the death penalty has angered the European Union (EU); the demand of immediate restoration of moratorium has also angered Pakistanis. Despite the immediate demand for restoring the moratorium; Pakistan will not restore the moratorium after what had happened in Peshawar. Obviously, the EU fails to take into consideration Pakistan’s number one foe which is terrorism; rather it should offer a helping hand to facilitate the elimination of bad guys. Death penalty may not be the best deterrence against the suicide at-

Restoring the longform census will save money, boost the economy and improve our quality of life
By:Ted Hsu, MP Liberal Party of Canada Science Critic Eliminating the long form census was a costly mistake and it’s high time Parliament fix it and restore it by passing Bill C-626. In 2011, Stephen Harper replaced the traditional long form census with a voluntary survey that cost taxpayers more— $22 million more—and produced inferior data. Its numbers were unusable for 25% of our towns and weren’t comparable to past surveys. Worse still, groups like rural residents, the poor and youth were undercounted because of low response rates. That bias not only compromised the census, but it damaged other surveys which rely on census data to correct their sampling. These errors make it harder for businesses to understand markets, governments to deliver services and researchers to get facts. The census is used to design better public transit through its data on commuting patterns. It helps determine where religious groups, minorities and immigrants live, which tells us what services and
businesses could succeed in their neighbourhood. It is the only source of data on small communities’ skill needs and labour shortages. Groups like the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Federation of Independent Business and the Canadian Medical Association have been calling for a fix. That’s why I proposed C-626 to restore the long form census. It would save money and produce better data for everyone. This bill also ensures the census produces quality data that is comparable over time, and empowers the Chief Statistician to protect the integrity of the survey design and data collection process. Canadians need the basic data that is essential to good planning. I hope Members of Parliament will vote to pass C-626 this winter so that we can stop paying more for less.

tackers because they lose their lives right away, yet it would definitely scare their abettors and financiers. War on terror will receive a real blow once the execution of the convicted terrorists is allowed to continue uninterrupted all the way till its logical ending. Hopefully, the long awaited normalcy will return followed by economic national betterment. Then the EU may advocate for the humanitarianism as much as it wants. Currently, the jailed convicts awaiting executions are being held due to appeal-scenario; many have been enjoying because of the moratorium on death penalty. There is a lot of talk about “military courts;” this development is against the spirit of democracy. Under the ongoing negative circumstances, non military courts/ anti terrorism courts have not been fully successful in providing quicker justice, therefore the dream of rooting out terrorism never really came true. Since the terrorists cannot be permitted to be roaming free among the vulnerable populace, they need to be nabbed to be put to death within a reasonable time frame in the best interest of the entire nation. Political parties have already developed consensus to setup military courts for the period of two years. The house is also expected to approve a bill to amend the Pakistan Army Act. After the passage of Constitutional Twenty-first Amendment Bill to provide a constitutional cover to military courts, the scenario will be a different one. Let’s wait for the dust to settle in favour of perpetual peace.

Intl’s Deputy Asia-Pacific Director: “Pakistan suffered an horrific tragedy in Peshawar last week, but resorting to the death penalty and threatening to carry out large numbers of executions masks rather than addresses the underlying problems that need to be tackled by the government – namely that communities living in the north-west of Pakistan are gravely at risk from violence and human rights abuses: “The speed with which these executions are taking place raises big questions about how meaningful the review of the mercy petitions – the last safeguards in death penalty cases – has been in a country where trials are systemically flawed,” said David Griffiths”: Prisoners are at risk of imminent execution once their mercy petitions have been rejected: “One death row prisoner is Shafqat Hussein, who was 14 at the time of his arrest. Speaking in the House before the passage of 21st amendment he said that no Muslim and follower of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) could even think to make legislation that is in clash with the tenets of Islam or pass any law for that purpose. The legislation is being framed against those who are using the name of our religion for terrorist activities and maligning Islam which teaches love, peace and tolerance, he said. According to teachings of Islam, killing of an innocent person is tantamount to killing of the entire humanity, he added. ISLAMABAD: Pakistani lawmakers on Tuesday approved two bills in the Parliament to provide constitutional cover to special courts for conducting trials of suspects involved in terrorist activities. The 21st Constitutional Amendment and Army Act Amendment 2015 were approved by the National Assembly and Senate today. In the National Assembly the bills were approved unopposed as 247 members voted in favour of the laws. Following approval in the National Assembly, Senators also approved the amendments which will now be sent to President Mamnoon Hussain to be signed into law. Members of the Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl group) abstained from voting over reservations. Lawmakers from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were not present in the National Assembly as their resignations are pending with the speaker. Decision for extraordinary measures was taken by elected leaders: PM Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the decision for extraordinary measures was taken by Pakistan’s elected leadership. Prime Minister Sharif on the floor of the Senate thanked Asif Ali Zardari, Altaf Hussain, Imran Khan, Chaudhry Shujaat and the entire political leadership of the country for the passage of the bills which would provide constitutional cover to special courts. The prime minister added that even though JUI-F Maulana Fazlur Rehman did not vote he still stood with the national leadership. Prior to the 21st Amendment and Army Act Amendment 2015 being approved in the Senate, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the decision of which cases will be heard by the military courts will be made by the government. Judicial commission to probe Taliban Chief Behind Pakistan rigging should be formed by School Massacre Promises January 18: Imran Khan More Attacks
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan said the judicial commission to probe election rigging should be formed by January 18. In a press conference held here on Tuesday, Khan once again set a deadline for the government and announced that his party did not want to take to the streets, but would do so if the judicial commission was not formed by January 18 “We can shut the entire country whenever we want, but we do not want this,” Khan said. The PTI chairman further said that the PTI’s future course of action would be announced later.
The head of the group behind last month’s horrific Pakistani school massacre that left 153 dead said the militants would strike again if the government continued to target its members and their families. “You will forget the Peshawar school attack when you face more deadly attacks,” Maulana Fazlullah, the head of Pakistan’s Taliban-Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), said in a 12-minute online video statement that came to light Tuesday. He said that militant attacks would continue if what he termed “detention and house arrest of their women and (the) torture-to-death of their jailed fighters” did not stop. Instead of saying the group regretted the slaughter of scores of innocent schoolchildren
in Peshawar’s Army Public School on Dec. 16, Fazlullah threatened to target more children of military officials. “Every action has a reaction. Killing of people or shedding blood is not our wish but if you target our people irrespective of their age, then we would also hit your people. You killed many of our prisoners and remember we would not spare you‎,” he said. “We would target you everywhere and if you found me, don’t spare me,” he said in the video, during which he appeared to lose his temper, particularly when he talked about detention and house arrest of wives, mothers and daughters of Taliban members or the extrajudicial killings of imprisoned militants. SC frames charges against Salman Iqbal, Mubashir Lucman
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has rejected the pleas for unconditional forgiveness from ARY owner Salman Iqbal and anchor Mubashir Lucman and framed charges against the two. Level allegations without evidence, launch a vilification campaign, use the name of Almighty, the holy Qur’an and Pakistan but ask for forgiveness at once when the court orders to produce evidence in support of such claims. This is exactly what happened in the
Supreme Court of Pakistan when it ordered Salman Iqbal and Mubashir Lucman to come up with proof in support of the allegations they had been leveling. A three-judge SC bench, headed by Justice Aijaz Afzal, conducted hearing of the contempt of court case under Article 204 against ARY CEO Salman Iqbal and anchor Mubashir Lucman. The court turned down the apology offered in writing by both the individuals, ruling the apology is not unconditional. Later, the SC framed charged against
the two. According to the charges, Mubashir Lucman and Salman Iqbal deliberately humiliated a judge of the apex court. Both the accused assured the court that they would submit their replies in writing on the charges within a week. Later, the court appointed the Attorney General as the prosecutor of the case and directed him to submit names of the witnesses in two weeks. Source:.thenews.com.

German anti-Islam rally Palestine’s ICC bid hits record numbers could mark turning point
At least 18,000 people in the eastern German city of Dresden have taken part in rallies opposing Islamic influence in Western nations, prompting massive counter-protests in several cities. The record number of people that took to streets in support of the right-wing populist movement known as the “Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisisation of the Occident” (PEGIDA) on Monday came despite a call by Chancellor Angela Merkel to snub such demonstrations deemed racist by many. Organisers of the opposing demonstrations in Berlin, Stuttgart, Cologne and Dresden said they were rallying against discrimination and xenophobia to instead promote a message of tolerance. Businesses, churches, Cologne city’s power company and others were planning to keep their buildings and other facilities dark in solidarity with the demonstrations against the ongoing protests by PEGIDA. Over the last three months, the crowds at PEGIDA’s demonstrations in the eastern city of Dresden, a region that has few immigrants or Muslims, have swelled from a few hundred to 17,500 just before Christmas. Police said a similar number were expected again later on Monday night. The Dresden demonstrations have spawned smaller PEGIDA rallies elsewhere, including gatherings planned in Berlin and Cologne on Monday night where several hundred were expected
to be on hand. By contrast, about 10,000 counter-demonstrators were expected in Berlin, 2,000 in Cologne and another 5,000 in Stuttgart where there was no PEGIDA protest planned. PEGIDA has broadened its appeal by distancing itself from the far right, saying in its position paper posted on Facebook that it is against “preachers of hate, regardless of what religion” and “radicalism, regardless of whether religiously or politically motivated”. “PEGIDA is for resistance against an anti-woman political ideology that emphasises violence, but not against integrated Muslims living here,” the group said. It has also banned neo-Nazi symbols and slogans at its rallies, though critics have noted the praise and support it has received from known neo-Nazi groups. Lutz Bachmann, PEGIDA’s main organiser, refused to comment further about his party’s platform when approached by the AP news agency at a recent rally. Cem Ozdemir, co-chairman of The Greens party and himself the son of a Turkish immigrant, told n-tv on Monday that while he, too, was against any form of extremism, “intolerance cannot be fought with intolerance”. “The line is not between Christians and Muslims,” he said. “The line is between those who are intolerant ... and the others, the majority.” Source: Al-Jazeera
Falling oil prices will hurt Alberta as Ontario, B.C. economies grow Falling oil prices will shift the balance of power among Canada’s provinces this year, with Alberta expected to see its growth rate slashed in half, according to Bank of Montreal chief economist Douglas Porter. Meanwhile, Ontario and British Columbia will battle it out for who will see the fastest growth in 2015, Porter said during a panel discussion hosted by the Economic Club of Canada. “Unfortunately it’s a bit of a race of the turtles as we’re looking at maybe 2.5 per cent growth in those two provinces,” Porter said Tuesday. Last year, Alberta’s economy grew by 3.9 per cent, according to the province’s website. Alberta has led all of the provinces in GDP growth over the past two decades, with average annual growth of 3.5 per cent per year. National Bank chief economist Stefane Marion said it will take some time for Ontario’s manufacturing sector to be able to capitalize on lower production costs brought on by cheaper oil. That’s because much of the excess capacity Ontario once had in its factories was gutted during the financial crisis and subsequent recession and it will take time to rebuild, Marion said. “We do have the ability to offset the oil price in terms of the energy price decrease but it will take time,” Marion said. “That doesn’t happen overnight. We don’t have the same amount of spare capacity that we had in previous oil shocks.” However, Marion predicted the pain won’t be long-lasting. He said oil prices could return to US$60 barrel in the first half of the year, and US$70 barrel in the second half. Oil prices have been falling since June, slipping 55 per cent amid a glut of global supply. On Tuesday, the February crude contract in New York dropped below the US$50 a barrel mark
to US$49.14. CIBC chief economist Avery Shenfeld said if oil prices begin to recover in the second half of the year, he expects the Bank of Canada to raise its key interest rate by one quarter of a point. However, if oil remains low and Canada’s economy is at risk of growing at a rate below two per cent, Avery doesn’t anticipate any interest rate increases from the central bank until 2016. The bank’s has held its trend-setting interest rate at one per cent for more than four years. Scotiabank chief economist Warren Jestin says Canadian manufacturers and exporters are likely to see a boost in demand thanks to growth in the U.S. and a lower Canadian loonie. But he said the increased demand for Canadian goods isn’t translating to an increased investment in the manufacturing sector. “We’ve got more people producing autos now that the U.S. demand is there ... but that’s a cyclical recovery,” Jestin said. “We’re not getting the investment longer term. It’s going to Mexico. It’s going to the U.S. South.” Shenfeld said the Canadian dollar will likely need to drop further before automakers start building new plants north of the border. “We’re trying to find the level of the exchange rate that makes Canada look a bit more like Tennessee — in other words, a cost effective place to put that facility in — and we’re not there yet,” Shenfeld said. Although Ontario is more competitive than it used to be, it still has higher electricity rates than some other jurisdictions, Shenfeld said. “We’re probably going to need to see a weaker currency to make Canada, Ontario, Quebec, the place to install that next plant. Palestine’s bid to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) could mark a turning point in the Middle East conflict, as the war crimes court could prosecute both Israelis and Palestinians. This week, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas signed papers requesting membership in the Haguebased court, and the Palestinian ambassador to the UN formally submitted the application to the UN secretary-general on Friday. It will take a minimum of 60 days for the request to come into effect. The move comes just days after the UN Security Council rejected a resolution that would have set a deadline for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories. If the court accepts the application, the ICC prosecutor could open an investigation into war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed on Palestinian territories by any party. “The ICC would have jurisdiction to prosecute both Israelis and the Palestinians,” Eugene Kontorovich, a professor of international law at Northwestern University in Chicago and an expert on the conflict, told Al Jazeera. If the ICC decides to step in, crimes by both sides are likely to come under scrutiny, Kontorovich said. Hamas has been accused of indiscriminately targeting Israeli civilians and firing rockets from civilian areas, while Israel could be prosecuted for its settlements and the offensive in Gaza this summer, legal experts say. In a report, Amnesty International documented attacks by Israeli forces, saying they amounted to war crimes. The attacks took place during Operation Protective Edge in July and August. Since ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda can only investigate crimes that take place after Palestine has ratified the court’s founding treaty, she would not have a legal basis for the prosecution of incidents related to Operation Protective Edge. However, Palestine could decide to give the court the power to cover events in the past, including Israel’s conduct in Gaza in 2014, international relations scholar David Bosco argues. Abbas has reportedly asked the court to investigate crimes that took place on Palestinian soil after June 13, 2014. The ICC can only prosecute persons, not states, organisations or other entities. However, Palestine cannot choose which individuals the prosecutor goes after, nor could it avoid the prosecution of Hamas or Fatah members, Bosco noted. Before the prosecutor’s office in
The Hague can open an investigation, Palestine likely has to ratify the Rome Statute – the court’s founding treaty. The ICC, too, has to accept the membership. In 2012, the prosecutorrejected an application, arguing it was unclear whether Palestine was a state. However, its status was since upgraded by the UN General Assembly and more recently by other ICC member states, making it likely the court will accept Palestine’s bid this time. As a member of the ICC, Palestine could invite the court to investigate crimes committed on its territory, while the prosecutor could also request an investigation on her own. However, “so far the ICC has tried only middle-ranking rebel leaders from Africa”, Kontorovich said, noting the court might lack the experience and the teeth to go after prominent Israeli and Palestinian suspects. An Israel-Palestine case would not be an easy one for the court, which has previously experienced difficulties in investigating politically controversial cases. In December, the prosecutor had to drop charges against Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. Eight days later, sheannounced a halt to investigations in Darfur after failing to get the necessary support from the Security Council and the international community. The ICC does not have its own police force, instead relying on states’ cooperation to arrest suspects and carry out court decisions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already indicated Israel would protect its soldiers from prosecution, saying the Israeli army is “the most moral army in the world”. “The ICC moves slowly, so one cannot expect immediate action on the part of the ICC in response to Palestine’s joining the ICC,” John Dugard, the former special rapporteur to the UN commission on the human rights situation in Palestine and a professor of international law, told Al Jazeera. But the political implications of the Palestinian action are serious, he added. Firstly, it raises the possibility of the prosecution of Israeli and Palestinian leaders for war crimes. “The Israel Defense Forces portrays itself as the most moral army in the world. This will now be brought into question,” Dugard said. Secondly, Israeli settlements could come under scrutiny: “If Israelis are summoned by the ICC, the West will have to come to terms with the fact that Israel is a criminal state and withdraw its protection.” Source: Al-Jazeera
The Bank of Canada is expected at some point in the year to hike interest rates, and even a small and gradual hike would affect millions of Canadians with car loans, mortgages and lines of credit. “Definitely not going to take much of a hike to make a difference and impact your payments,” says Toronto-based financial planner Jason Heath. “As soon as there’s a quarter-point increase in interest rates, I think it’s going to have an immediate impact on people’s psychology.” Get ready for interest rate shock in 2015 Debt: How to use it and not abuse it Stephen Poloz says up to 30% overvalued housing big risk to economy Stephen Poloz says low interest rates may be here to stay

B.C. parents hoping for a boost from the $60 increase in the federal Universal Child Care Benefit may find themselves squeezed anyway by rising daycare costs. The majority of the benefit increase may already be eaten up by increases in fees by some daycares, said family policy researcher Lynell Anderson. “Parents absolutely are squeezed,” said Anderson. Daycare fees are rising at faster than the cost of inflation, Anderson added, and she expects rising fees across the province to catch up with the increased benefit within a year and a half. The Universal Child Care Benefit was introduced by the Conservative government in 2006, and is given as a cheque to every parent with a child under six years old. But while child care fees increased each year, the benefit did not, leaving parents further behind. In the runup to a 2015 election the Conservatives announced they would raise the benefit to $160 a month. But a review of some day cares by CTV News shows that some have increased their fees even as the benefit rose. Brightpath, which operates a network of day cares across the country including seven in B.C., said it increased its monthly fees be-
tween two and four per cent. In its Coquitlam centre, monthly fees rose from $1,175 to $1,215 for kids under three, and $815 to $850 for kids between three and five. But the company said the increase had nothing to do with the increased UCCB. “Most industry providers increase their rates on a yearly basis,” said Juliana Jay, Brightpath’s director of marketing. She said the increase would largely go to paying for increased transportation costs, wage increases, and other costs of doing business. Employment and Social Development Canada issued an emailed statement to CTV News saying, “The Government of Canada does not regulate the fees charged by child care providers.” A Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives report found that the median price of Vancouver infant day care is $1,215 per month, and about $870 a month for toddlers. The cost adds up to about 29 per cent of a Vancouver woman’s income, the report says. Anderson says parents would be better served by a national day care plan similar to what is available in Quebec, where parents pay $7.30 a day for full-time care, or about $150 a month. B.C. advocates have been pushing for a $10 a day daycare, while a $15 a day plan is part of the federal NDP’s platform. Anderson said such plans would make it easier for parents to stay in the workforce paying taxes -- one immediate financial benefit that would help the government pay for such a program. “The benefits extend to employers, who have less stressed workers, communities who have good supports in place and the benefits extend to the economy overall,” Anderson said. mother, who cannot be identified because her daughter is now in the care of Child and Family Services (CFS). “I felt bad as a parent that that happened to her.” Police said the toddler was in the recycling bin for around 15 minutes before a man who had also been at the party heard the cries and found her. “I picked up this baby, and I yelled back out there to call the cops. I just found a baby in a garbage can,” Robert Keno told CBC News last week when the story first broke. Toddler dumped in Winnipeg North End recycling bin New Year’s Day The mother said she has reached out to Keno to say thank you. The mother said the girl is now OK and that she hopes to get her back soon from CFS. She said she’s not sure what may have motivated her brother to take the girl, except that he had been drinking.
Child recovering Police said an altercation broke out at the party, and one person was chased away and went down the street. That person, it was later confirmed, was Keno. The 17-year-old boy then got into an altercation in the house as well and allegedly took the toddler — his niece — and rushed outside. He fell, landing on the child and causing her to suffer a number of injuries, before putting her in the recycling bin, according to police. The boy is reported to have then returned to the party, where, according to police, he got into a physical altercation with a 13-yearold girl. In the meantime, Keno had walked to his nearby home. He was inside when he heard the cries of the toddler, who was in a bin behind his home. The girl was taken to hospital with lifethreatening injuries but has stabilized and is recovering. The toddler’s 17-year-old uncle is charged with: • Assault. • Possession or consumption of liquor by a minor. • Causing bodily harm by criminal negligence. • Abandoning a child. Fewer Canadians feeling confident about their personal finances: poll Canadians’ confidence in being able to meet current financial goals is slipping, says a new poll. Two-thirds of Canadians – 65 per cent – said they are entering the new year feeling positive about being able to reach their financial goals, according to an annual poll conducted for CIBC. That’s down from 76 per cent who said the same thing last year, the lowest percentage in 5 years. And among the least confident this year are Canadians in the 45-to-54 age bracket, says the Neilsen poll. Only 58 per cent of them expressed confidence about reaching their financial goals, down from 77 per cent last year. In comparison, 75 per cent of Canadians aged 25 to 44 were optimistic about reaching their financial goals, relatively unchanged from 76 per cent a year ago. A second question asked those polled if they feel positive about their current financial situation and – again – the 45-to-54-year-olds were among the least optimistic: 58 per cent voiced confidence, down from 73 per cent a year earlier. That compares with 69 per cent in the 25-to-34 age group, up from 68 per cent. The single biggest concern for Canadian consumers is paying down debt, according to a separate recent CIBC poll. “The decline in confidence among boomers is the most significant we’ve seen in five years,” Christina Kramer, CIBC executive vice-president of retail and business banking, said. “As each year goes by and boomers increasingly focus on debt reduction as an immediate priority, they also get closer to retirement without a long term plan in
place that will deliver the retirement they are looking for.” “We are seeing a real conflict among Canadians close to retirement, who are trying to balance their short term need to reduce debt with the longer term goal to save for the retirement they want,” Ms. Kramer said. “As Canadians approach traditional retirement age it can be a challenge to keep focused on both, and that can impact their overall confidence in their future finances.” The poll results also indicate a wide spread across the country. In Alberta for example, 77 per cent said they are optimistic about reaching their financial goals, down from 84 per cent, while only 50 per cent of Quebec respondents expressed confidence, a big decline from 68 per cent a year earlier. The results are based on a sample of 1,014 Canadians interviewed between Nov. 13 and Nov. 17, 2014. A sample of this size has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 per cent, 19 times out of 20. Euro touches a nine-year low against US dollar’ The euro slid to a nine-year low against the dollar as investors predicted the European Central Bank (ECB) may act to stimulate the economy. The euro fell by 1.2% against the dollar to $1.1864, marking its weakest level since March 2006, before recovering slightly to $1.19370. The drop follows ECB president Mario Draghi’s comments indicating the bank could soon start quantitative easing. Greek political turmoil also weighed on the currency. Although the ECB has already cut interest rates to a record low level, and also bought some bonds issued by private companies, a full-scale programme of quantitative easing QE has not yet been launched. But on Friday, Mr Draghi hinted in a newspaper interview that the bank might soon start a policy of QE by buying government bonds, thus copying its counterparts in the UK and US. The purpose would be to inject cash into the banking system, stimulate the economy and push prices higher. Speaking in an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Mr Draghi said: “We are making technical preparations to alter the size, pace and composition of our measures in early 2015.” Political turmoil in Greece also weighed on the euro, with fears that the general election on 25 January, could see the anti-austerity, left-wing Syriza party take control of the country. The possibility has sparked fears about whether Greece will stick to the terms of its international bailout and stay in the eurozone. On Saturday, Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine said the German government believes the eurozone would be able to cope with a Greek “exit” from the euro,
if the Syriza party wins the Greek election. Reacting to Der Spiegel’s report, a spokesman for German Chancellor Merkel said there was no change in German policy and the government expects Greece to fulfil its obligations under the EU, ECB and IMF bailout. French president Francois Hollande also commented, saying it was now “up to the Greeks” to decide whether to remain a part of the single currency. “Europe cannot continue to be identified by austerity,” he added, suggesting that the eurozone needs to focus more on growth than reducing its deficit. Analysts said the euro was likely to remain volatile for the next few weeks. “The market is readying itself for action from the ECB. The first meeting of the year takes place on 22nd January, so the euro is likely to remain in focus and see heightened volatility as we approach that date, which is also a few days before the Greek General Election,” said FxPro senior analyst Angus Campbell. F A I T H Volume 1, Book 3, Number 64: Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Abbas: Once Allah’s Apostle gave a letter to a person and ordered him to go and deliver it to the Governor of Bahrain. (He did so) and the Governor of Bahrain sent it to Chousroes, who read that letter and then tore it to pieces. (The sub-narrator (Ibn Shihab) thinks that Ibn Al-Musaiyab said that Allah’s Apostle invoked Allah against them (saying), “May Allah tear them into pieces, and disperse them all totally.)”
Pearls of Peace: An extract from Surah Kahf This Surah begins with the mention of some youth who lived under a tyrant leader. Because of their community’s deviance from the right path, the youth decided to leave them and sought refuge in a cave. Fearing their community and feeling lost, they prayed to Allah (swt), “(Remember) when the young men fled for refuge (from their disbelieving folk) to the Cave, they said: Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!” (AlKahf 18:10) And Allah (swt) answered their prayer and protected them by making them sleep for several years. One reason for losing one’s peace is being in the wrong company. We see people around us indulging in such acts that are contrary to the Quran and Sunnah, and we don’t see a way out for ourselves. In such moments, we should remind ourselves the story of these strong young men. They migrated for the sake of Allah (swt). Their migration was not for any worldly need, but to protect their Iman. See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil This is a powerful statement! Another stirring statement is: garbage in, garbage out. Our brains have the ability to instantly process everything that we come across. If we read or watch filth; that is what is going to come out of our mouth. We will no more be conscious of what words we are uttering or what actions we are doing. Consider for example, you pass by a Masjid and you see people entering in flocks. You have an urge to follow them. You enter the Masjid and you are spiritually uplifted. Now you are with your friends. They offer you a glass of alcohol and you refuse it. They insist you to have a sip. You refuse but they push you. You give in and take a sip. You begin enjoying your drink. What happens next? You are addicted.
A sincere advice Change your company and reform yourself. Protect your eyes, mouth and ears. Avoid juicy stories and vice. This is why our Prophet (sa) taught us to ask Allah (swt) for beneficial knowledge and protection of our eyes and ears. The youth discussed in Surah Al-Kahf did not just distance themselves from the wrongdoing people but also made Dua. Never leave Dua. It is your connection with Allah (swt) via which you can ask Him for goodness. It is a mercy of Allah (swt) that He has informed man of both, the truth and the falsehood. Mankind has been given a choice to follow whatever they desire, “And say: The truth is from your Lord. Then whosoever wills, let him believe, and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve.” (Al-Kahf 18:29) Beware these choices have consequences, “Verily, We have prepared for the Zalimun; a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them (disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah). And if they ask for help (relief, water, etc.) they will be granted water like boiling oil that will scald their faces. Terrible the drink, and an evil Murtafaqa (dwelling, resting place, etc.)!” (Al-Kahf 18:29) Repentance – a way out! While one is free to pick his path, he is not free to escape the punishment. Every action of man is being recorded in a book, “And the record [of deeds] will be placed [open], and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it, and they will say, ‘Oh, woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?’ And they will find what they did present [before them]. And your Lord does injustice to no one.” (Al-Kahf 18:49) To save oneself from such an end, one must hasten to seek repentance. Because sincere repentance is the only thing that can wipe out our bad deeds. When you have shed sincere tears of repentance, compete to increase your good deeds. Don’t waste time; because we will be in need of a lot good deeds in

the Hereafter. May Allah (swt) bless us with steadfastness in our repentance. Ameen. How merciful is Allah (swt)? Not only does Allah (swt) make us aware of the right and the wrong, but He is also willing to forgive our wrongdoings; if we turn to Him. Sadly how ungrateful is man- forever complaining and quarrelling, “And indeed We have put forth every kind of example in this Quran, for mankind. But, man is ever more quarrelsome than anything.” (Al-Kahf 18:54) We argue over Allah’s (swt) commands and Prophet’s (sa) tradition; showing disrespect and ingratitude to both of them. We should immediately surrender to the commands of Allah (swt) as soon as we learn about them. Are we unintentionally ignoring Allah (swt)? Allah (swt) tells us to come to the right path. But we turn away. “And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayat of his Lord, but turns away from them forgetting what (deeds) his hands have sent forth. Truly, We have set veils over their hearts lest they should understand this (the Quran), and in their ears, deafness. And if you (O Muhammad (sa)) call them to guidance, even then they will never be guided.” (Al-Kahf 18:57) When a person chooses to ignore Allah (swt), then Allah (swt) too is not interested in guiding such a person. On the contrary, the one who loves Allah (swt); He opens his heart to comprehend the beneficial knowledge. Today, when one learns of a football match in his city or perhaps a lawn launch; we leave every other worldly task and run to be the first ones to stand in queue. But when call for prayer is given from the mosque and we are promised a greater reward for standing in the first row with the angels; we sit back and turn our attention to something else. How ungrateful man really is! May Allah (swt) make us of those who run towards doing good. May He not make us of those whose hearts have been sealed. Ameen. Who is your child’s superhero? Another sad reality is that our children, as young as seven and eight years old, know the names of the entire football or cricket team; but they don’t know the names of the Prophets and their Companions. These were the people who strove with their life and wealth to spread and protect Allah’s (swt) religion. These were the people who were given the glad tiding of Paradise, and we are not interested in learning about them.
A scary reminder! Allah (swt) says, “Say (O Muhammad (sa)): Shall We tell you the greatest losers in respect of (their) deeds? Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life while they thought that they were acquiring good by their deeds!” (Al-Kahf 18:103-104) What a scary reminder! The efforts of such a person are limited to the worldly life only and he has no concern for the Hereafter. When you invite such people to study Quran, learn one verse or a Dua, they come up with countless unnecessary tasks of this world. While the game is on, we are at loss! Whose loss will it be if we turn away from Allah (swt)? How many hours does a man spend at his job to get a salary at the end of the month? On average, we spend at least eight hours at work weekly. Then we get our pay cheque. We work approximately for 208 hours in a month like slaves to get that cheque. Allah (swt) offers us much greater reward; not only in this world, but an eternal life of bliss in the Hereafter. Unfortunately, we are too lethargic when it comes to obligatory prayers. How many times have we woken for Fajr before the call for prayer is even given? And how many times have we woken up at 3 a.m. without hitting the snooze button when a football match is on? Those who do wake up, they wake up to get done with it. Let us commit to fall in love with our prayer because we love Allah (swt), and we seek His love and His mercy. The way we have messed up our priorities, shows how confused we are about our purpose in life. Not only are we confused about our purpose in life; but our worship too. We have strayed away from the path of Muhammad (sa) and invented our own ways of worship; which were neither taught by the Prophet (sa) nor practiced by his Companions (ra). The proponents of innovations say, “Say (O Muhammad (sa)): I am only a man like you. It has been inspired to me that your Ilah (God) is One AIlah (God i.e. Allah). So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.” (Al-Kahf 18:110) Hold on to Quran and Sunnah and let not Shaytan deceive you. 8th day of AirAsia search begins; big parts found in Java Sea
By Ben Brumfield and Jethro Mullen, One week after AirAsia Flight QZ850appeared from air traffic control radar, the search for victims and more of its wreckage was underway Sunday, officials said. Waves are expected to be 1.5 to 2 meters high, said Bambang Sulistyo, head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, at a press conference in Jakarta. Sulistyo said that if the weather is relatively good, divers will be sent to the location where four objects were detected on sonar. There are 89 divers on standby and divers from Russia will join the effort, he said. Search teams have found four large pieces of debris believed to be parts of the aircraft. Sulistyo said the latest objects -- including one that is 18 meters (59 feet) long -- were located by sonar in the priority search area. Searchers came upon the metal parts after spotting an oil slick late Friday. Bad weather conditions -- including 15-foot waves and strong underwater currents -prevented divers from conducting searches Saturday, meaning no additional bodies were recovered. Sunday’s forecast called for more favorable conditions, he said. Who was on the plane
Sinking bodies
Anton Castilani is eager to get the rest of the victims out of the waters before they sink to the bottom of the sea. He is in charge of identifying them and said that gases in the bodies that keep them afloat disperse after a few days in the water. It’s been nearly a week already. The plane went missing on Sunday. He urged families to be patient with his team as they identify loved ones. He wants to do his work right. “We have to make sure that we have to return that right body to the right family,” he said. Decomposition also slows his work down. “The later the dead bodies come to you, the harder you work,” he said. His team uses fingerprints and dental records as well as

What we know: The Airbus, operated by AirAsia’s Indonesian affiliate, had accumulated about 23,000 flight hours in about 13,600 flights in six years. The plane’s last scheduled maintenance was November 16. Flight 8501’s veteran captain, Iriyanto, 53, had 20,537 flying hours, 6,100 of them with AirAsia on the Airbus A320, the airline said. The first officer, Remi Emmanuel Plesel, 46, had 2,275 flying hours, a reasonable amount for his position. Indonesian authorities are looking in to why AirAsia was flying that particular route on that particular day; the country’s transport ministry claims that AirAsia was permitted to fly it only on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. AirAsia said it will cooperate with the inquiry and suspended all service from Surabaya to Singapore in the meantime. What we don’t know: Did technical problems or human error have anything to do with the crash? A major aviation database registers 54 incidents involving the A320. Some A320 accidents and incidents involve fan-cowl detachments, landing gear collapse, bird strikes and pilot error, an expert said. These cause disasters only in very rare cases.
Security threat?
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta issued a security alert Saturday after being “made aware of a potential threat against U.S.-associated hotels and banks in Surabaya.” A State Department official, however, told CNN that there was “no knowledge of any connection between this threat and the Air Asia flight.” No additional information was given regarding the nature of the threat, but the Embassy recommended “heightened vigilance and awareness of one’s surroundings when visiting such facilities.” CNN’s Paula Hancocks, Kevin Bohn and Joseph Netto contributed to this report. Journalist Yosef Riadi and translators Michelle Anugrah, Azieza Uhnavy and Edi Pangerapan also contributed. Source: Al Jazeera and agencies

Hub e Rasool Conference
A Grand Eid Milad Al-Nabi (saw) was held in surrey on January 2nd at the India Banquet Hall. it was an overwhelming success with over 700 people in attendance, including dignitaries and non-Muslims interested in learning about the life of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). This year’s Eid Milad ul Nabi (SAW) was truly “Grand” in every sense, from the glittering lights of the chandeliers, to the wonderful fragrance of bakhoor which gently flowed through the ballroom, no expense was spared and every detail was carefully orchestrated to show the greatest amount of love and respect to our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the one to whom we owe everything for bringing us the religion of Islam. The Grand Eid Milad Ul Nabi (SAW) was sponsored by the NaqshbandiyyaNazimiyya Center of Vancouver, the Fiji Islamic Center and the Bullay Shah Academy of Canada. After the attendees had taken their seats inside the magnificently decorated banquet hall, the Milad began with children, dressed in beautiful turbans and sunnah outfits, and holding green flags and banners, walked in a procession down the main isle towards the stage, reciting praises upon the Prophet (saw). The innocence in their eyes, and the sweet sound of their voices expressing their love to Prophet Muhammad (saw) brought many in the audience to tears as they remembered when they were children celebrating Eid Milad ul Nabi (SAW) in their homelands before coming to Canada. It was a wonderful, heart-warming way to begin an evening filled with love. Many dignitaries were present, including Jinny Sims, Member of Parliament for Newton-North Delta, Counselor General of Pakistan Dr. Muhammad Tariq, Community service Officer Ghalib Bhayani representing Chief of Surrey RCMP Mr. Bill Fordy and former Member of Parliament Mr. Sukh Dhaliwal. Mr Asim Akhtar Khan welcomed all the guests and dignitaries in a beautiful way. All dignitaries were happy to attend the program. They spoke about the importance of holding such events for the greater community to see the beauty of the Islamic faith, as well as the importance of voicing issues of concern to the community through the proper democratic channels. At the end of their speeches each dignitary was awarded a participation plaque and a gift by Shaykh As-Sayyed Nurjan MirAhmadi, Mawlana Abdul Lateef Naumani. Peer Afzal Naqshbandi and Mr. Asim Akhtar Khan. Following the speeches by the dignitaries and invited guests, a Naat ensemble from
the Naqshbandiyya-Nazimiyya Center of Vancouver recited Naat and a short zikr for the audience. This brought about a wonderful energy of love and tranquility that prepared the audience for the main speakers. First to speak was Maulana Abdul Latif Naumani from Fiji Islamic Center, he spoke about the love and importance of respect that Sahaba Kram had for Holy Prophet PBUH. Mawlana Naumani addressed the audience in his very eloquent way explaining that celeberating Milad brings abundance of blessing and barakah in our life. Milad is a sign of love and loving holy Prophet completes our Iman. He quoted hadis mubarakah and events from Shaba Kram life how they used to love and adore Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Mawlana Naumani made three announcements on this Holy day. One to celebrate the Milad in most festive way, Secondly condemning the heinous act of terrorism that happened in Peshawar,Pakistan and strongly declaring that all Muslims should be united against any and every kind of terrorism. Mawlana Also announced to form a united Suni Council that will represent the Ahle Sunat wal Jamat and uniting all groups in Love and Honor of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Following Maulana Naumani’s speech, Shaykh As-Sayyed Nurjan MirAhmadi from the Naqshbandiyya-Nazimiyya Center brought the audience to tears once more as he spoke in English about the reality of love from a spiritual perspective, and that our love should be directed towards Sayedina Muhammad (saw). Shaykh Nurjan said that the concept of “Ahlul Sunnah wa Jammah” is that we are the people of the Sunnah, and following the Sunnah of Sayedina Muhammad (saw) is an act of love. He said that what we should be competing with each other is not our amal but our love. Shaykh Nurjan stressed that the fard is obligatory; therefore there is little reward to be found there. Allah (swt) ordered us to do it, so we have to do it. But the reward from Allah (swt) comes from those actions which go above and beyond the fard, those actions which are done out of love for Sayedina Muhammad (saw), and this is exemplified by the degree to which we follow the Sunnah. Shaykh Nurjan also clarified an important Islamic issue within the community: that of giving oneself titles. In particular, Shaykh Nurjan said that the title of a “Mufti” is not something to be claimed by just anyone and it is not a title that you buy at a store. Rather, it is an honour that is given by Allah (swt). Shaykh Nurjan then said that the only one quali-
fied to hold the title of “Mufti” in all of British Columbia is Maulana Naumani, who’s Islamic education is of the highest calibre, and who has given more than 20 years of service to the Islamic community in BC. Refering to him as “Mufti Saab”, Shaykh Nurjan pointed out that many other Imams and leaders within the community had learned from Maulana Naumani and yet they show very little respect to him. This is not in accordance with the teachings of the Prophet (saw), who said that if someone taught you just one letter, you owe that person your life. What about those who taught us our Islam? Therefore, Shaykh Nurjan said that anyone who has learned from Maulana Naumani should respect Mawlana Naumani, but instead they are showing bad character and rebelling against him. Event ended with presenting darood and Salam Upon the Holy Prophet (SAW) Ashab-e-Nabi (SAW) and Ahle Bait (Rizwan Allah Tala Ajmaien). Peer Afzal presented the soul touching and heart melting final supplication and asked for foregiveness and blessing of Allah (SWT) in this Holy Month. A delicious dinner was served and guests were presented with flowers and gifts. Inshallah Hub-E-Rasool (SAW) Monthly Conference will be held on January 18th 2015 on Sunday at 6:00pm in Fiji Islamic Center. It is a free event and we welcome and encourage everybody to participate in our monthly conference.

Syrians to face visa restrictions for Lebanon
Following influx of more than one million refugees, Syrians will need visas to enter neighbouring country from Monday. Lebanon is to impose visa restrictions on Syrians for the first time after being overwhelmed by an influx of more than 1.1 million refugees, according to documents published online. The new regulations, posted on the website of the General Security agency, will come into effect on January 5 and lay out new visa categories, including for tourism and medical treatment. This is the first time that Lebanon has required Syrians to apply for visas. Citizens of both countries have for decades been able to travel freely across their shared border. The new rule is the latest in a series of measures taken by Lebanon to stem the influx of Syrians fleeing their country’s brutal civil war. Lebanon imposes stricter conditions for Syrians crossing border The document lists categories including tourist visas, which require applicants to provide evidence of a hotel reservation and $1,000, as well as a valid passport or ID card. Other visas are available for business visits, medical treatment and schooling, as well as transit visas for onward travel. Visas are also available for those who own
property in Lebanon or are seeking to enter to apply for visas at foreign embassies in Beirut. Security and economy In October, Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbas said Lebanon was effectively no longer receiving Syrian refugees, with limited exceptions for “humanitarian reasons. A security source, speaking to AFP news agency on condition of anonymity, declined to describe the new requirements as visas, but acknowledged they were unprecedented. “This is the first time these kinds of instructions have been given, he said. “The goal is to bring the security and economic situation under control and to monitor the presence of Syrians on Lebanese soil. A spokesman for the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said they were still studying the new rules and had no immediate comment. But aid groups and agencies working with Syrian refugees have long warned that Lebanon, with a population of just four million people, has been overwhelmed by the influx of Syrians. More than 200,000 people have been killed in Syria’s conflict, which began in March 2011 and has displaced around half the country’s population. Source: aljazerac.om

ICC bid Abbas signed onto 20 international conventions the next day, including the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, giving the court
jurisdiction over crimes committed on Palestinian lands and opening up an unprecedented confrontation between the veteran peace negotiator and Israel. In retaliation for the move to the ICC, Israel announced on Saturday that it would withhold $125m in monthly tax funds that it collects on the Palestinians’ behalf, in a blow to
Abbas’s cash-strapped government. “Now there are sanctions - that’s fine. There’s an escalation - that’s fine ... but we’re pushing forward, Abbas said. Abbas’ plan to resubmit the statehood application came as Israel considers its options for further punishing Palestinians after freezing millions in tax revenues as a first response to their attempt to join the International Criminal Court. Palestinian leaders responded to the tax freeze by accusing Israel of trying to starve their people as a form of mass punishment. The Palestinian move to join the Hague-based court sets the scene for potential legal action against Israel for war crimes, in a bid to put pressure on Israel to pull out of the territories. But the request to join the court, formally presented on Friday, angered Israel which quickly moved to freeze the transfer of $127m in tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority (PA). Eating Disorders Can Start in Elementary School, Study Shows
By: ActiveBeat Author In recent years we’ve heard a lot about childhood obesity. Now, a new report says eating disorders like bulimia can start very early on — perhaps even in elementary school. The report comes from the Universite de Montreal, where researchers examined just over 200 children aged eight to twelve, all diagnosed with eating disorders. The researchers found that about 15 percent of the children occasionally made themselves throw up, while 13 percent reported bulimic-like behavior. An incredibly 52 percent had been hospitalized at least once as a result of their eating disorder, while just under half had received outpatient treatment as a result of these disorders. The report is expected to change how medical professionals think about eating disor-

ders like bulimia. “Many researchers believe that bulimia only appears at adolescence, but our (findings) indicate that the problem can arise much earlier,” noted the study’s lead author, Dominique Meilleur, a clinical psychologist. “It is possible that it is currently under-diagnosed due to a lack of awareness and investigation.” The report also revealed that more than one-third of the children under evaluation came from families with psychiatric problems, including anxiety and mood disorders. Another one in four said they had been openly mocked or teased about their appearance, a factor that intensified the eating disorder. Meilleur said this bullying “can initiate or reinforce body image preoccupations” and can eventually “lead to a change in eating behavior.” Overall, it’s clear that body image issues start much earlier than high school. “These behaviors reflect the clinical presentations we observe in adolescents and support findings that body image is a preoccupation for some children as early as elementary school,” Meilleur said.

Police arrest 7
By: Serafina Silaitoga SEVEN people have been arrested, 861 plants believed to be marijuana have been uprooted and two parcels of dried leaves have been confiscated by police in the North as a result of Operation Sasamaki. Police conducted a raid on Monday in parts of the North resulting in the discovery of plants and dried leaves. And Chief of Operations Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu issued a stern reminder to those who are involved in such illegal activities that police mean business in their fight against drugs. He said Operation Sasamaki was a success and the results of the raid was a good start for the year considering the impact it carried in their fight against drugs. “We are also appreciative to the public and the crime prevention committees in these areas for their support because they called with the tip,” ACP Tudravu said.
“We had made arrangements for our drugs analyst to be in Labasa today (yesterday) because we want the tests done while the suspects are still in our custody and charges made and they be produced in court. “This is how serious we are in fighting drugs and by doing this, we want to get the message out to the people. Police will continue to rely on information from the public as it comes in.” ACP Tudravu said the seven suspects have already been interviewed. “We are adopting a new strategy whereby we want all drug cases to be investigated and the suspect produced to court quickly as a deterrent to others who contemplate being part of or are involved in this illegal trade,” he said. “Previous practice would have the suspect released awaiting analysis of the suspected substance which at times would be a lengthy process.”
Former constables cry foul over payout
By Mere Naleba ABOUT 20 police special constables who served in the Fiji Police Force from 2004 to 2012 are raising questions on why they are not included in the pension payout expected to be paid to officers who served during that period. Two of the 20, Josateki Bogidua and Penijamini Bainimarama who were in the force about that period, say they have been neglected and their service to the country has not been recognised. Mr Bogidua, who joined the force in 1979 and left in 2007, said they had carried out the duties expected from a regular officer which included manning police posts, taking part in city operations, escorting remanded inmates to court, beat patrol in operation areas, part of community policing and many other tasks assigned to them. His colleague Mr Bainimarama, who was in the force from 2000 until 2007, said they had been treated unfairly. “We carried out the duties of any regular force officer, we were paid sick leave and then when
we enquired about this payout we were told that special constables are not going to be part of it, that is really unfair,” Mr Bogidua said. Force spokeswoman Ana Naisoro yesterday said the force would not comment further on the issue. “As stated earlier by the acting commissioner, no further comment will be made regarding this issue,” she said. “A team is working round-the-clock to ensure officers are paid on the second pay of January.” The two former special constables said they had visited the police accounts department only to be told the payout was only for regular police officers. ANXIETY DISORDERS
What are anxiety disorders?
Anxiety disorders are mental illnesses. The different types of anxiety disorders include: Phobias A phobia is an intense fear around a specific thing like an object, animal, or situation. Most of us are scared of something, but these feelings don’t disrupt our lives. With phobias, people change the way they live in order to avoid the feared object or situation. Panic disorder Panic disorder involves repeated and unexpected panic attacks. A panic attack is a feeling of sudden and intense fear that lasts for a short period of time. It causes a lot of physical feelings like a racing heart, shortness of breath, or nausea. Panic attacks can be a normal reaction to a stressful situation, or a part of other anxiety disorders. With panic disorder, panic attacks seem to happen for no reason. People who experience panic disorder fear more panic attacks and may worry that something bad will happen as a result of the panic attack. Some people change their routine to avoid triggering more panic attacks. Agoraphobia Agoraphobia is fear of being in a situation where a person can’t escape or find help if they experience a panic attack or other feelings of anxiety. A person with agoraphobia may avoid public places or even avoid leaving their homes. Social anxiety disorder Social anxiety disorder involves intense fear of being embarrassed or evaluated negatively by others. As a result, people avoid social situations. This is more than shyness. It can have a big impact on work or school performance and relationships. Generalized anxiety disorder Generalized anxiety disorder is excessive worry around a number of everyday problems for more than six months. This anxiety is often far greater than expected—for example, intense anxiety over a minor concern. Many people experience physical symptoms too, including muscle tension and sleep problems. Other mental illnesses Some mental illnesses are no longer classified as anxiety disorders, though anxiety or fear is a major part of the illnesses. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) Obsessive-compulsive disorder is made up of unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause anxiety (obsessions) or repeated actions meant to reduce that anxiety (compulsions). Obsessions or compulsions usually take a lot of time and cause a lot of distress. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Post-traumatic stress disorder can occur after a very scary or traumatic event, such as abuse, an accident, or a natural disaster. Symptoms of PTSD include reliving the event through nightmares or flashbacks, avoiding reminders of the traumatic event, and feeling unsafe in the world, even when a person isn’t in danger. Who do they affect? Anxiety disorders can affect anyone at any age, and they are the most common mental health problem. Sometimes, anxiety disorders are triggered by a specific event or stressful life experience. Anxiety disorders may be more likely to occur when we have certain ways of looking at things (like believing that everything must be perfect) or learn unhelpful coping strategies from others. But sometimes there just doesn’t seem to be a reason. What can I do about them? Many people who experience an anxiety disorder think that they should just be able to ‘get over it’ on their own. Others may need time to recognize how deeply anxiety affects their life. However, anxiety disorders are real illnesses that affect a person’s well-being. It’s important to talk to a doctor about mental health concerns. Some physical health conditions cause symptoms of anxiety. A doctor will look at all possible causes of anxiety. Normal, expected anxiety is part of being human. Treatment should look at reducing unhelpful coping strategies and building healthy behaviours that help you better manage anxiety. Each anxiety disorder has its own specific treatments and goals, but most include some combination of the following strategies:
Counselling An effective form of counselling for anxiety is cognitive-behavioural therapy (or ‘CBT’). CBT teaches you how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours work together. A goal of CBT is to identify and change the unhelpful patterns of thinking that feed anxious thoughts. CBT can help you identify problem behaviours and replace them with helpful strategies. It’s often the first treatment to try for mild or moderate problems with anxiety. Medication Some people also find antianxiety or antidepressant medication helpful. Medication can help with the physical feelings of anxiety. It may also make anxious thoughts less frequent or intense, so it can be easier to learn helpful coping strategies. Some people take medication until their anxiety is controlled enough to try therapies like CBT. Support groups Support groups—in person or online—may be a good place to share your experiences, learn from others, and connect with people who understand. Self-help strategies
Many different skills can help people manage anxiety, such as stress management, problemsolving, and relaxation. Mindfulness—developing awareness of the present moment without judgement—may also help. Practices that support wellness, such as eating well, exercising, having fun, and connecting with others, are also important. How can I help a loved one? Supporting a loved one who is experiencing an anxiety disorder can be difficult. You may not understand why your loved one feels or acts a certain way. Some people who experience an anxiety disorder feel like they have to do things a certain way or avoid things or situations, and this can create frustration or conflict with others. You may feel pressured to take part in these behaviours or adjust your own behaviours to protect or avoid upsetting a loved one. Support can be a delicate balance, but you should expect recovery¬—in time. Here are some general tips. Remind yourself that the illness is the problem—anger, frustration, or behaviours related to anxiety are nobody’s fault. Be patient—learning and practicing new coping strategies takes time. If your loved one is learning new skills, offer to
help them practice. Listen and offer support, but avoid pushing unwanted advice. Set boundaries and seek support for yourself, if needed. If other family members are affected by a loved one’s anxiety disorder, consider seeking family counselling. Do you need more help? Recruiting In-Demand, Skilled Immigrants to Canada
Express Entry will contribute to Canada’s economic growth and international competitiveness January 1, Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander today celebrated the successful launch of Express Entry – a highly anticipated new application management system designed to get people with the skills to succeed in Canada’s economy here faster than ever. Starting today, skilled workers who want to apply to Canada’s key economic immigration programs are able to create an online profile and express their interest in coming
to Canada permanently. Candidates who meet the minimum criteria will be accepted into the pool and will be ranked according to various factors. These include language proficiency, education and work experience. Each is a leading indicator of one’s likelihood of integrating fully and quickly into Canada’s economy and Canadian society. The highest ranking skilled workers will be invited to apply for permanent residence and most will see their application processed in six months or less. The first invitations to apply will be issued during the
As of January 2015, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has a new electronic system called Express Entry to manage applications for permanent residence under certain economic immigration programs. The Express Entry system is the first step to immigrate to Canada under these programs. Potential candidates can complete an Express Entry profile at any time. Note that there is no deadline to complete a profile and there are no caps on the number of
candidates that will be accepted to the pool. Anyone who is accepted into the Express Entry pool could get an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence. Draws to invite candidates to apply will take place regularly over the course of each year. We will only pick the top ranking candidates no matter when they were accepted into the pool. If you are invited to apply, you will have 60 days to submit a complete Application for
last week of January. Express Entry marks major progress for skilled foreign nationals and employers alike. Express Entry will allow Citizenship and Immigration Canada to identify those who are most likely to succeed economically in Canada, instead of simply processing applications on a first-come, first-served basis. This will result in faster processing and will allow the Government of Canada to be more flexible and respond better to Canada’s changing labour market needs. •Express Entry will manage applications for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class. •Provinces and Territories will be able to use the Express Entry system to select a portion of candidates for their Provincial
Nominee Programs. •Once candidates have been invited to apply for permanent residence they will need to complete the immigration process, which includes health and security checks. Complete applications will be processed in six months or less. •Canada has admitted more than 1.6 million new permanent residents since 2006, and will admit between 260,000 and 285,000 in 2015 alone. There are many reasons the world’s best and brightest Choose Canada.

The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
18-month investigation, the Justice Dept. discredited Jowers and concluded that there was no evidence of an assassination plot. King wrote Stride toward Freedom (1958), Why We Can’t Wait (1964), and Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? (1967). His birthday is a national holiday, celebrated on the third Monday in January. King’s wife, Coretta Scott King, has carried on various aspects of his work. She also wrote My Life with Martin Luther King (1989).
Civil Disobedience
1929—1968, American clergyman and civil rights leader
Martin Luther King was born on 15 January 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia (US). Originally named Michael, he was later renamed Martin, like his father, a Baptist minister. His mother, Alberta Williams King, was a schoolteacher.Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., graduated from Morehouse College (B.A., 1948), Crozer Theological Seminary (B.D., 1951), and Boston University (Ph.D., 1955). The son of the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, King was ordained in 1947 and became (1954) minister of a Baptist church in Montgomery, Ala. He led the black boycott (1955-56) of segregated city bus lines and in 1956 gained a major victory and prestige as a civil-rights leader when Montgomery buses began to operate on a desegregated basis. King organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), which gave him a base to pursue further civil-rights activities, first in the South and later nationwide. His philosophy of nonviolent resistance led to his arrest on numerous occasions in the 1950s and 60s. His campaigns had mixed success, but the protest he led in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963 brought him worldwide attention. He spearheaded the Aug., 1963, March on Washington, which brought together more than 200,000 people. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. King’s leadership in the civil-rights movement was challenged in the mid-1960s as others grew more militant. His interests, however, widened from civil rights to include criticism of the Vietnam War and a deeper concern over poverty. His plans for a Poor People’s March to Washington were interrupted (1968) for a trip to Memphis, Tenn., in support of striking sanitation workers. On Apr. 4, 1968, he was shot and killed as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel (since 1991 a civil-rights museum). James Earl Ray, a career criminal, pleaded guilty to the murder and was convicted, but he soon recanted, claiming he was duped into his plea. Ray’s conviction was subsequently upheld, but he eventually received support from members of King’s family, who believed King to have been the victim of a conspiracy. Ray died in prison in 1998. In a jury trial in Memphis in 1999 the King family won a wrongful-death judgment against Loyd Jowers, who claimed (1993) that he had arranged the killing for a Mafia figure. Many experts, however, were unconvinced by the verdict, and in 2000, after an
civil disobedience, refusal to obey a law or follow a policy believed to be unjust. Practitioners of civil disobedience usual base their actions on moral right and employ the nonviolent technique of passive resistance in order to bring wider attention to the injustice. Risking punishment, such as violent retaliatory acts or imprisonment, they attempt to bring about changes in the law. In the modern era, civil disobedience has been used in such events as street demonstrations, marches, the occupying of buildings, and strikes and other forms of economic resistance. The philosophy behind civil disobedience goes back to classical and biblical sources. Perhaps its most influential exposition can be found in Henry David Thoreau’s On the Duty of Civil Disobedience (1849), in which he claims that the individual, who grants the state its power in the first place, must follow the dictates of conscience in opposing unjust laws. Thoreau’s work had an enormous impact on Mohandas Gandhi and the techniques that he employed first to gain Indian rights in South Africa and later to win independence for India. Gandhi developed the notion of satyagraha [Sanskrit: holding to truth], acts of civil disobedience marked by Indian tradition and his own high moral standards and sense of self-discipline. Attracting a huge number of followers from the Indian public, Gandhi was able to use the technique as an effective political tool and play a key role in bringing about the British decision to end colonial rule of his homeland. His was one of the few relatively unqualified successes in the history of civil disobedience. The philosophy and tactics of civil disobedience have been used by Quakers and other religious groups, the British labor movement, suffragists, feminists, adherents of prohibition, pacifists and other war resisters (see conscientious objector), supporters of the disabled, and a wide variety of other dissenters. In the United States, the most outstanding theoretician and practitioner of civil disobedience was civil-rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During the 1950s and 60s he achieved international fame by leading numerous peaceful marches, boycotts, and sit-ins. Like Gandhi, he was jailed several times. The beatings, mass arrests, and even killings of civil-rights demonstrators pledged to nonviolent civil disobedience were important factors in swaying public opinion and in the ultimate passage of new civil-rights legislation (see integration). Civil disobedience in the United States traditionally has been associated with those on the left of the political spectrum, as were most participants in the anti–Vietnam War movement, but toward the end of the 20th cent. the strategy also began to be employed by those on the right, for example, by those involved in confrontational but nonviolent antiabortion activities. Confidence!
Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet so many people struggle to find it. Sadly, this can be a vicious circle: people who lack self-confidence can find it difficult to become successful! After all, most people are reluctant to slow down at a project that’s being instructed by someone who is nervous and lacks confidence. On the other hand, you might be persuaded by someone who speaks clearly, who holds his or her head high, who answers questions assuredly, and who readily admits when he or she does not know something. Confident people inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. And gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a self-confident person finds success. The good news is that self-confidence really can be learned and built on. And, whether you’re working on your own self-confidence or building the confidence of people around you, it’s well-worth the effort!
Self-confidence is about balance. At one extreme, we have people with low selfconfidence. At the other end, we have people who may be over-confident. If you are under-confident, you’ll avoid taking risks and stretching yourself and you might not try at all. And if you’re overconfident, you may take on too much risk, stretch yourself beyond your capabilities, and crash badly. You may also find that you’re so optimistic that you don’t try hard enough to truly succeed. Getting this right is a matter of having the right amount of confidence, founded in reality and on your true ability!! shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Unveiling the Truth: The Hijab and Muslim Women in Canada By: Rubab Abid (Toronto) Specially written for the Miracle The hijab has been a continually controversial and emotionally-charged topic throughout history. Within both the Muslim world as well as many Western countries, the on-going conversation surrounding the hijab and other Islamic headscarves has brought about intensely polarizing sentiments from both sides of the aisle. On the one hand, many Muslims around the world feel that the hijab is a religious and social mechanism through which Muslim women can assert their modesty, privacy, and morality. On the other hand, numerous Western politicians, commentators, and feminist organizations view the hijab as an archaic and oppressive religious symbol which unfairly subjugates and marginalizes the rights of Muslim women. Within this whirlwind of social, political, and religious debate, the opinions and perspectives of young Muslim women are often left unheard. More specifically, young Muslim women who are born and raised in Canada find themselves placed in a very unique and interesting context with respect to the issue of the hijab. On the one hand, Muslim-Canadian women have been raised within a distinctly Western perspective and have been brought up in the influence of its social, cultural, and political practices. They have grown up surrounded by the power of the Western media, movies, music, television, and magazines, all of which project a distinctly sexualized image of female gender roles. On the other hand, many secondgeneration Muslims living in Canada also feel a deep and profound sense of connection, value, and respect for their cultural and religious roots. Young Muslim-Canadian women often uphold culturally-specific traditions and religious practices such as refraining from dating, avoiding alcohol and
drugs, and wearing modest clothing such as the hijab alongside their distinctly Western upbringing. As one can imagine, the task of balancing and harmonizing these two seemingly different worlds can be very a difficult process for many young Muslim Canadians. One of the most critical challenges facing Muslim women living in Canada centers on the hijab. Despite the assertions of certain critics, the decision to wear or not wear the hijab is a very complex and multi-faceted issue. It does not simply boil down to a purely religious duty on the one hand, or the fundamentalist Islamic oppression of women on the other. It is a decision which entails a wide range of social, political, economical, emotional, and psychological factors. There are a wide range of reasons why many young Muslim-Canadian women choose to wear the hijab. Undoubtedly, there are countless Muslim women who wear the hijab solely as a religious act of duty and modesty and view the hijab as a symbol of their adherence to Islamic beliefs. However in a post-
9/11 world, the eff e c t a n d mean-
ing of the hijab has become more and more politically charged. With Western countries such as France and Germany and even the province of Quebec placing institutionalized bans on the hijab in public places, many young Muslim women have been forced to re-interpret the meaning and significance of the hijab throughout their lives in the West. Many young Muslim women have come to utilize the hijab as a reactionary symbol of social and political protest against the intolerance and prejudice of anti-Islamic critics. These women utilize the hijab as a political tool through which they emphasize and promote their Muslim identity. For young Muslim women, the hijab becomes a badge of pride and condemnation against Western countries and their foreign policies. On the other hand, many young Muslim women in Canada choose to wear the hijab as a direct response to Western ideals of overt female sexuality and the West’s overwhelming emphasis on external beauty. Many Muslim women feel that the hijab
grants them a sense of protection and emancipation from conforming to Western ideals of femininity. In this sense, the hijab is utilized as a tool which grants young Muslims a sense of liberation and freedom. In both cases, Muslim women are shown to be actively and consciously deciding for themselves the method and manner in which they wear the hijab. Conversely, there are also a wide and multifaceted range of reasons why some MuslimCanadian women chose to not wear the hijab. It is a sad fact that many Muslims are unfairly discriminated against in Western society as a result of their religious beliefs. Whether in the workplace, schools, universities, or public places, many Muslim-Canadian women complain that they are often treated with hostility, fear, anger, and even violence as a result of their hijab. In many instances, Muslim women are overlooked for potential job opportunities or become the victims of bullying or social isolation. As a result, many young Muslim women feel that in order to avoid such bigotry and inequality, removing their headscarf is the most practical and effective choice for them. Other Muslim women simply choose not to wear the hijab because they feel that covering their hair does not signify the level of their religious beliefs and view the hijab as more of a cultural interpretation rather than a religious requirement. It is important to note that young CanadianMuslim women, like all women, are not singular monolithic beings. They are diverse, complex, and multi-faceted individuals with wide-ranging thoughts, opinions, and experiences. Correspondingly, the various reasons behind why certain Muslim-Canadian women choose to wear or not wear the hijab are similarly complex and diverse. Why and how a woman comes to this decision is a personal judgment which only the woman herself can and should make. Hence, it is important for both Western society and the Muslim community itself to respect this choice and the reasoning and motivations behind such a critical decision.

10 Things You Shouldn’t Say to Your Kids
These oft-used phrases may end up doing more harm than good. BY DENISE SCHIPANI There are a handful of obviously wrong, damaging and terrible things to say to a child (“I wish I never had you” or “You’re the reason we’re getting a divorce” count among them). But it may surprise you to discover that some seemingly harmless phrases can trigger resentment, dent self-esteem or bring up other less-than-desirable sentiments in your kids. Amy McCready, founder of Positive Parenting Solutions and author of If I Have to Tell You One More Time…,notes, “We have the best of intentions, but often we say things to our kids without thought to how it’s being perceived by the child.” Here, 10 phrases you should think twice about before repeating to your kids. 1. “I know you can try harder.” Frustrated by a daughter who you know is capable of much more in school, sports, music, etc.? While you (hopefully!) aren’t saying such obviously hurtful things as “You are so lazy!”, any comment that makes it seem as though you’re not satisfied with her efforts can not only be discouraging to your child, it can also do the opposite of motivating her to try harder, says McCready. If your “try harder” has to do with tasks or chores, be clear about what you expect: “When you have your room cleaned up, then you can go out and play.” If you’re talking about academics, “take note of times she does go the extra mile,” such as: “Wow! That extra time spent on your book report really shows!” 2. “Are you sure you need that second cupcake?” Yikes. You have good intentions — keeping your child fit and healthy — but you’re better off steering clear of any talk that might foster a negative body image, says McCready. If you’re worried about what your child eats at home, use actions, not words, such as stocking your kitchen with healthy foods rather than junk and emphasizing family physical activity like afterdinner walks. That way, if there are cupcakes at a party, your child’s fine to indulge. And walk the walk yourself; you mix your message if you tell your kid to keep his hands out of the cookie jar while you’re inhaling potato chips. Incidentally, the same goes for telling your child that he’s a “great” eater; try to avoid labels (he’s my picky child; she’s such an adventurous eater; this one needs to stay away from treats) because “you never want to turn food into a power issue,” says McCready. As best you can, keep food-related comments specific and positive: “Wow, I see you tried the squash soup!”
RELATED: 11 Lessons Every Mother Should Teach Her Daughter 3. “You always…” or “You never…” Undeniably, it’s tempting — almost a reflex at times — to spit out an always (“You always forget to put your socks in the hamper!”) or a never (“You never remember to call me when you’re running late!”). But be careful because those two words are a minefield, says Jenn Berman, PhD, a psychotherapist and author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy, Confident Kids. “At the heart of ‘You always’ and ‘You never’ statements are labels that can stick for life.” Kids become what we tell them they are, so telling your child that he “always” forgets to call makes him more likely to be the kid who, you guessed it, never calls. Instead, ask your child how you can help him or her change: “I notice you seem to have trouble remembering to bring home your textbooks. What can we do to try to help you remember?” suggests Dr. Berman. 4. “Why can’t you be more like your sister/ brother?” Siblings and rivalry go hand in hand — and anything you say that sets up comparisons only fuels that natural flame, says McCready. If you’re saying, for example, “Your brother is practicing piano and he sounds great — why can’t you do that?” you’re essentially telling your child that piano is his brother’s thing, and he’s not measuring up. “Comparisons slot siblings into categories — the smart one, the athlete — and discourage kids from trying the thing their sibling is ‘good’ at.” Try instead to encourage each child in whatever pursuits are “his” or “hers,” while avoiding comparisons. 5. “I told you waiting until the last minute was a mistake!” You repeatedly informed your middle-schooler that if he played video games all afternoon, he’d have less time to study for the math test. And guess what? He stayed up too late, went to school sleepy and unprepared, and didn’t do as well as he could have on the exam. But any time you say “I told you so” to your child, you’re in effect telling him you’re always right, and by contrast he’s often wrong or a screw-up, says McCready. When he comes home with the poor grade, resist the “I told you so” urge and instead ask him if the two of you could brainstorm some smarter ways to study the next time. Also, “point out the positives that occur when he does follow through,” says McCready. For example, if he cleans up his room when asked, saying “Isn’t it easier to find all your stuff when your room’s tidy?” puts the control and the credit with him — not you. RELATED: Stop Arguing With Your Kids 6. “You’re the best at soccer!” It may seem obvious that denigrating your child’s efforts (“You’re no artist!”) can be damaging, but in fact, even the positive pronouncements can be bad because they are limiting, says McCready. “Say you always tell your child how smart she is. She may, over time,
The Righteous Beggar By: Fatima Nadeem Grade 7, Surrey The following incident took place in Dhaka which is the capital city of Bangladesh. There was a beggar in the city that used to beg beside a Masjid on Fridays after Jumah prayer. Begging was permissible for him due to his adverse condition. Though he was a beggar, he would pay attention to the sermons that were delivered during the Khutbah. One such sermons were about the importance of earning halal income. He learnt that supplications (dua) will not be accepted from those people whose income are from forbidden sources. He immediately decided to accept money from only those individuals that he knew had halal income. His daily earnings decreased as a result but he was committed to his decision. Then become scared of trying new things or more challenging work, for fear she won’t be ‘smart’ anymore if she gets a B instead of an A.” It can also backfire if your child is struggling with work and you say, “But you’re so smart!” She may only feel worse for not living up to the label you’ve given her. But what if your child is not a great soccer player? If she enjoys it, that’s enough. But if she feels she’s not good at it, she may be less likely to try a different sport later on, says McCready. Focus instead on her hard work: “You show up to every practice and try your best,” or “What a fantastic job on this science project!” 7. “Don’t worry — the first day of school will be fine.” What’s wrong with trying to soothe an anxious kid out of worry? “If you tell your child not to worry, you’re dismissing her feelings,” says Dr. Berman. “So now, she’s still worried about the first day of school, and she’s worried that she’s worried, or that you’re upset over her worry.” Same goes for “Don’t cry” and “Don’t be angry.” Instead, say, “I can see you’re worried. Can you tell me what you’re most concerned about, so we can talk about it?” 8. “Because I said so!” We’ve all been there — you just need to get out the door and you don’t have time to explain why you need to switch off the computer and head to a family event/doctor’s appointment/ religious obligation. “Because I said so,” puts all the control in your hands, and dismisses your child’s growing sense of autonomy and ability to figure things out, says Dr. Berman. “Because I said so” also leaves out a potential teaching moment. Let’s say your kids don’t want to visit their aging great-aunt on a sunny day when they’d rather ride their bikes. “Because I said so” only makes them feel less in control of what they are able to do. Instead, try, “I know you’d rather ride your bike, but Aunt Clara really loves seeing you, and we try our best to honor our family.” That way, even
came a day when the beggar died. Even though he lived as a beggar, his funeral was like that of a king. Many dignitaries of the area attended his funeral because they knew of that great sacrifice he used to make daily in order to keep up with the commandment of Almighty Allah. if they continue to grumble, they know their feelings matter; plus, they’ve learned a valuable lesson about how you conduct yourselves as a family. RELATED: When Bad Friends Happen to Good Kids 9. “I wish you didn’t hang out with Jack; I don’t like that kid.” Yeah, a lot of parents don’t like “that kid,” for whatever reason, but “the moment you tell your child that ‘that kid’ is not your favorite, he becomes more appealing,” says Dr. Berman. Evaluate, first, what you don’t like about Jack. Is he just not your cup of tea, or does he present some sort of danger you don’t want your child exposed to? If it’s the former, grit your teeth. If it’s the latter, though, “Ask your child some open-ended questions,” says Dr. Berman. “What do you like about hanging out with Jack? What do you guys do?” The idea is to keep the lines of communication open between you two, and hopefully spark discussion about values, right and wrong, and so on. 10. “That’s not how you do it! Here, let me.” You asked your child to stir the soup, or fold the towels, or wash the car. Sure, you want the help — but then she kind of does a notso-great job. Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, it can be tough to hold yourself back from just jumping in and taking the task back, “But that’s a mistake, because then she never learns how, and is less likely to try anything else you ask down the line,” says Dr. Berman. If you can stand messy folding or a less than clean car, let it go. Or, you can step in but in a collaborative rather than dismissive way: “Here, let me show you a neat trick my mom taught me about folding towels!” TELL US: Do you agree with these? Do you have any more phrases to add? Source: goodhousekeeping.com/family
S l h (Prayer) - Our Golden Opportunity Salah
By: Rahma Khan As we continue playing our video games and enjoy life’s happiness, we have to take notice of something else as well. What am I talking about? Our Salah. As you know or might know, Salah is very important in our lives. But why is Salah important? What makes it so special and why are we reminded daily about it? Salah is our chance to please our merciful god and show Him our love and thanks. It is our chance to gain thousands of good deeds judged by the qualAllah(SWT) and get a variety of good friends and hang out at the mall and ignore ity of each single act of worship that is done deeds. Do we want to waste these golden our special times to freely and truly talk to towards Allah (SWT). We have 5 golden times? Would we rather play with our usual Allah (SWT)? Salah is a part of Arkaan Al opportunities each and every day to please
– Islam; the 5 pillars of Islam, which means Islam is not fully Islam to you if your prayer is missing. But always remember that it’s never too late to change. But Yawm AlQiyaama is coming! The Day of Resurrection/ Judgement is coming! So I advise everyone to pray their Salah as often as possible, and also, keep your eman good. Do not miss a single golden opportunity to thank Allah (SWT), and to ask Him for forgiveness of all our bad actions. Allah (SWT) said in the Quran: “Indeed, I am Allah. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (Jan 5, 1928- April 4, 1979) Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Despite civil disorder, aggravated by incidents of repression by federal forces, the PPP won the 1977 parliamentary elections easily. However, a conservative alliance alleged widespread rigging, and violence escalated across Pakistan. Finally on 5 July 1977, chief of army staff General Zia-ul-Haq deposed Bhutto in a bloodless coup, and had the former Prime Minister controversially tried and executed by the Supreme Court in 1979 for authorising the murder of a political opponent. While Bhutto’s legacy is contentious, his party, the PPP, remains one of the largest in Pakistan and continues to be dominated by members of his family.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto; (5 January 1928 – 4 April 1979) was the ninth Prime Minister of Pakistan (1973–77) and its fourth President(1971–73). Revered as Quaid-i-Awam (People’s Leader), he founded the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and served as its chairman until his execution in April 4, 1979. Educated at USC, UC Berkeley and Oxford, Bhutto trained as a barrister at Lincoln’s Inn in London. His political career began as a member of President Iskander Mirza’s cabinet, before being assigned several ministries during the presidency of Field Marshal Ayub Khan from 1958. Appointed as Foreign Minister in 1963, Bhutto was a proponent of covert infiltration in Indian Kashmir, leading to war with India in 1965. An agreement brokered by the Soviet Union ended hostilities, but Bhutto fell out with Ayub and was dismissed from the government. After uniting the left-wing mass, Bhutto founded the PPP in 1967, and contested 1970 general election held by President Yahya Khan– Ayub’s successor. The East Pakistani party, the Awami League, surprisingly won a plurality of seats, but neither Yahya nor Bhutto were ready to cede power to them. Subsequent uprisings led to the 1971 secession of the East as Bangladesh, as Pakistan were defeated in a war against Bangladesh-allied India. Bhutto was handed the presidency in December 1971 and an emergency was imposed. By July 1972, President Bhutto had recovered around 93,000 prisoners of war and 5,000 square miles of Indian-held territory after signing the Simla Agreement with Indian premier Indira Gandhi. In foreign affairs, he strengthened ties with Soviet Union, China and Saudi Arabia, and recognised the sovereignty of Bangladesh. Domestically, Bhutto’s reign saw parliament unanimously approve a new constitution in 1973, after which he endorsed Fazal Ilahi’s bid for president, and assumed instead the newly empowered office of Prime minister. He also played an integral role in initiating the atomic–bomb programme. His economic programme was based on the nationalization of much of Pakistan’s fledgling industries, healthcare, and educational institutions; this led to severe economic stagnation. In an attempt to restore peace, Bhutto dissolved the Balochistan Assembly which was met with unrest; Bhutto subsequently ordered a military operation in the province in 1973, causing thousands of civilian casualties.
Legacy Bhutto remains a controversial and largely discussed figure in Pakistan. While he was hailed for his nationalism, Bhutto was roundly criticized for intimidating his political opponents. By the time Bhutto was given the control of his country in 1971, Pakistan was torn apart, isolated, demoralized, and emotionally shattered after a psychological and bitter defeat at the hands of its bitter rival India. His political rivals had blamed his socialist policies for slowing down Pakistan’s economic progress, as they caused poor productivity and high costs. However Bhutto and co countered that they were mere addressing the massive inequality built up over the Ayub Khan years. Bhutto is blamed by some quarters for causing the Bangladesh Liberation War. In 1977, General Zia-ul-Haq released former general Yahya Khan from prison and his LieutenantGeneral Fazle Haq gave him the honorary guard of honor when the former general died in 1980. After being released from house arrest after the 1977 coup Yahya said, “It was Bhutto, not Mujib, who broke Pakistan. Bhutto’s stance in 1971 and his stubbornness harmed Pakistan’s solidarity much more than Sheikh Mujib’s six-point demand. It was his high ambitions and rigid stance that led to rebellion in East Pakistan. He riled up the Bengalis and brought an end to Pakistan’s solidarity. East Pakistan broke away.” Other army men who lay blame for 1971 at Bhutto’s feet include future President Pervez Musharraf and East Pakistan’s former Martial Law Administrator Syed Mohammad Ahsan. Bhutto is also often criticised for human-rights abuses in Balochistan by hard-line Islamists as well as conservatives. Bhutto’s actions during the 1970s operation in Balochistan are also criticised for failing to bring about a lasting peace in the region. Bhutto’s international image is more positive, casting him as a secular internationalist. Domestically, despite the criticism, Bhutto still remains Pakistan’s most popular leader. During his premiership, Bhutto succeeded in uniting all the parties in getting the 1973 constitution enacted. His determined and aggressive embrace of nuclear weapons for Pakistan has made him regarded as the father of Pakistan’s nuclear-deterrence programme, which he pursued in spite of Pakistan’s limited financial resources and strong opposition from the United States. In 2006, The Atlantic described Bhutto as demagogic
and extremely populist, but still Pakistan’s greatest civilian leader. Even though Henry Kissinger developed differences with Bhutto, in his 1979 memoir White House Years he conceded that Bhutto was “brilliant, charming, of global stature in his perception, a man of extraordinary abilities, capable of drawing close to any country that served Pakistan`s national interests”. While, Bhutto’s former Law Minister Mairaj Muhammad Khan described Bhutto as “a great man but cruel”. His family remained active and influential in politics, with first his wife and then his daughter becoming leader of the PPP political party. His eldest daughter, Benazir Bhutto, was twice Prime minister of Pakistan, and was assassinated on 27 December 2007, while campaigning for 2008 elections. While his son, Murtaza Bhutto, served as the Member Parliament of Pakistan, and was also assassinated in a controversial police encounter. Roedad Khan, former statesman who served under Bhutto, further wrote in his book, “Pakistan—A dream gone sour”, that
“after 1971, Bhutto started extremely well, bringing the isolated, angered, apprehended, and dismembered nation back into her feet and gave the respectable place in the world, in a shortest period... With a gift of giving the nation a parliamentary system and furthermore the ambitious successful development of atomic bomb programme in a record time, are his greatest achievements in his life, for Pakistan and her people, but sadly deteriorated at the end”. Bhutto remains highly influential in country’s public, scientific, and political circles; his name yet continues to resonate in Pakistan’s collective memory. With all the criticism and opposition, Bhutto remained highly influential and respected figure even after his death. Bhutto is widely regarded as being among the most influential men in the history of Pakistan. His supporters gave him the title Quaid-eAwam (Leader of the people). Source: Wikipedia.com

24 S P O R T S Developers, including Rams owner, plan Los Angeles stadium Rabiul Awaal 18, 1436 H January 9, 2015
A development group that includes a company controlled by the owner of the St. Louis Rams announced plans Monday to build an 80,000-seat stadium in the Los Angeles suburbs that could become home for an NFL team. The proposal that envisions a stadium rising on the site of a former horse track again raised the hopes of fans that Los Angeles could end its two-decade drought without an NFL team. It becomes the latest in a string of stadium proposals in the Los Angeles area since the 1994 exit of the Rams and Raiders from Southern California. The proposal stands out, however, because of the involvement of St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke. His company, The Kroenke Group, has entered a joint venture with Stockbridge Capital Group, which had been developing a 238-acre tract of homes, parks and office space at the former Hollywood Park track in Inglewood, on the edge of Los Angeles. Kroenke’s company owns an adjacent 60 acres, which would be merged into the overall development. The expanded project would include a stadium, a separate
6,000-seat performance venue and parking. ‘’This is a perfect location for a venue like this,’’ said Christopher Meany, a senior executive for the joint venture, Hollywood Park Land Co., alluding to its proximity to major freeways, the Los Angeles International Airport and The Forum, the former home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers. ‘’I don’t know of a place that compares to this.’’ A rendering of the project depicts a stadium, shielded by a gently sloping dome, surrounded by palm trees and fountains. Meany was cautious not to characterize the stadium as an NFL venue, emphasizing that any decision on moving a team is ‘’entirely in the hands of the NFL.’’ He repeatedly referred to the stadium as ‘’multipurpose,’’ also capable of hosting soccer games. The shell of the old racetrack would need to be leveled, and stadium construction is not expected to begin before late this year, with a completion date pegged for 2018. However, its development would hinge on approval by local voters, Meany said. The proposal was first reported Monday by the Los Angeles
Times. The plan adds pressure on the city of St. Louis to either strike a deal for a new stadium for the Rams, or watch the team return to Southern California, where it played from 1946 to 1994. The team is unhappy in the Edward Jones Dome, which is outdated by NFL standards. St. Louis is expected to offer the team a new proposal by the end of the month. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said in a statement that ‘’St. Louis is an NFL city and I am committed to keeping it that way.’’ Two of Nixon’s advisers on the NFL, former Anheuser-Busch executive David Peacock and lawyer Robert Blitz, said in a statement that ‘’this will be a long-term process, but one that the state of Missouri and the St. Louis region are fully pledged to seeing through.’’ The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are also playing in aging stadiums and are considered potential Los Angeles transplants. The earliest any team could move would be 2016. Meany made the Inglewood announcement standing outside the shuttered track, where work has been underway razing barns and pre-
paring the site for development. The city of Los Angeles has been hoping to lure an NFL team to a proposed downtown field. The city’s aspirations are hitched to Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and the downtown Staples Center, home of the Lakers and Clippers. Under its deal with City Hall, the company, led by billionaire Philip Anschutz, has until April to sign a football team. Another stadium project has been discussed for years in the city of Industry, about 20 miles east of downtown. Source: Yahoo.com
World Juniors: Canada holds off Russia to win gold
The sweetest sound was the final buzzer. Canada built a four-goal lead on Russia and could taste gold at the world junior championship. What followed was a harrowing struggle just to hold on. “We didn’t panic or certainly tried not to panic,” Sam Reinhart said. There were moments of panic, but by the time Monday night was over, gold medals were hanging around the players’ necks and they sang along with “O Canada” while locking arms on the blue-line on home ice at Air Canada Centre after a thrilling 5-4 victory over Russia. It wasn’t easy, but Canada’s world junior gold-medal drought that dated to 2009 was no more. Joy was heightened by the emotional twists and turns of this gold-medal game, another classic in the passionate rivalry between Canada and Russia that began with the 1972 Summit Series. This will go down as another unforgettable piece of Canada-Russia history. Anthony Duclair scored to give Canada the lead and ignite the crowd of 19,004 just 23 seconds in, and Russian starting goaltender Igor Shestyorkin was chased after Nick Paul scored goal No. 2 less than three minutes in. Thanks to goals from McDavid, Domi and Reinhart, Canada proceeded to build a fourgoal lead at 5-1, and this looked like it would
follow the script of past games in this tournament. This veteran team led by 19-year-old captain Curtis Lazar, a rookie with the Ottawa Senators, had never trailed and cruised into the final. Goal by goal the lead got smaller, and at 5-4 coach Benoit Groulx was forced to use his timeout to settle a rattled team that looked like teenagers for the first time. After going undefeated with victories over Slovakia (twice), Finland, Germany, the United States and Denmark, this was the first time Canada was really pushed. Clinging to a one-goal lead from late in the second period and through the third, the onus was on goaltender Zach Fucale, who imploded in the semifinals of this tournament a year ago. This time, Fucale was at his best, stopping all 11 shots he faced in the final period, including two in the final 12 seconds to preserve gold. The emotional ebb and flow of the building was palpable. Excitement built from the opening two goals and hit another high when Morrissey sprung McDavid for a breakaway goal that will go down as one of the signature moments of the game. When Reinhart deflected Domi’s shot past Russian backup Ilya Sorokin to make it 5-1, fans — and likely players — could taste gold. What followed was a series of penalties and
goals-against that made for a tense atmosphere. Groulx said it was clear the Russians were “here for a fight” and unwilling to wilt under pressure. Dmitri Yudin, Ivan Barbashev, Sergey Tolchinsky and Nikolai Goldobin scored goals to help make this one a classic. The poise of this gold-medal-winning team will be what Canadians remember. As dominant as this group was through the first six games, it had to bust out of its comfort zone to finish the job. The closeness of this group of 23 players aged 17 to 19 was never more evident than in the post-game ceremony when Lazar
skated over to injured teammate Robby Fabbri and handed him the trophy. Fabbri was lost for the rest of the tournament with a high ankle sprain in the quarter-finals. By the time it was over, this group made it clear they did this for the country, Hockey Canada, the fans but also for each other. That was part of the joy of victory. “At the end, I mean, it’s a game,” Lazar said. “It’s a game we love, the fans love it, we love it, the refs love it, and we’re all out here having fun.” Source: CBC News
