Dangerous times ahead
efying all predictions, Nawaz Sharif is back in the country to appear before an accountability court. His return symbolises a defiant disposition. He appears determined to fight back to restore his honour. Despite having been stripped of his position he still holds sway over the government — the new prime minister is at his beck and call. With his brother at the helm in Punjab it appears to be business as usual. For sure, Sharif’s return has helped instil confidence into his party and maintain a semblance of unity in the ranks. Most importantly, now he may be able to retain his position as the head of the ruling party following the passage of a new public representation bill. It is surely an unprecedented situation for an ousted leader facing indictment on several counts — ranging from money laundering to misappropriation — to be still commanding such authority. Interestingly, the former prime minister exudes more confidence now than when he left the country, though his tenor has mellowed. He may have been scathing visà-vis the judiciary, but there was no more mention of the ‘hidden hands’ conspiring against him. Indeed, the trial has become more of a political spectacle bringing the court under pressure. Sharif’s arrival at the court under a VVIP protocol sends a clear message that he is still in charge and not defeated yet. His decision to return has certainly gained the disgraced leader huge political mileage, putting his opponents on the back foot. But can he win this twin political and legal battle? has established at least a semblance of the institutional way of governance. Regular meetings of the National Security Council have also allowed the military to bring the civilian leadership onto its page in relation to foreign and national security policies. It is certainly in the military’s interest to support the current political arrangement. That may be a compromise that both sides may find mutually useful. In the bargain, the PML-N is likely to stretch its rule to the next elections, giving the party a clear advantage. It seems that senior party leaders may have been able to convince the former prime minister not to rock the boat. That may perhaps be the reason for Sharif’s more cautious approach at his news conference the other day. There was not even an implicit attack on the ‘establishment’, a marked shift from his rhetoric before his departure for London. His daughter Maryam too had taken that position in her speeches during the NA-120 byelection. But it may not be so simple. It all will depend on how the trial in the accountability court proceeds. There is no indication that it will not stick to its six-month mandate to complete the trial. There is also little probability of the family getting away unscathed. Sharif’s probable conviction along with that of other family members will cause the situation to unravel and no one will be able to control it. Dangerous times lie ahead. Army Chief Gen Bajwa to visit Kabul this week: reports
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa is expected to visit Kabul this week, Afghanistan’s Tolo News reported on Wednesday. Tolo News reported that Gen Bajwa is to meet senior Afghan officials to discuss key issues, including getting Taliban to come to the table for peace talks. Sources in Islamabad confirmed the development, saying that Gen Bajwa would briefly visit Kabul before heading to Moscow.Afghanistan does not want a mediator in its dialogue with Pakistan and has also informed India that it does not want hostility with Pakistan, the sources added. The Afghan news channel quoted Afghan Ministry of Defence Spokesman Dawlat Waziri as saying that the Kabul would reiterate its call to Pakistan to take action against ‘terrorist hideouts and safe havens inside Pakistani
territory’.“We will ask Pakistan to act honestly, otherwise these trips will not have results,” Waziri cautioned. The meeting comes on the back of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where both Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi spoke about terrorism in the region. PM Abbasi in his speech warned that Pakistan refused to be a “scapegoat” for Afghanistan’s bloodshed or to fight wars for others. “Having suffered and sacrificed so much due to our role in the global counterterrorism campaign, it is especially galling for Pakistan to be blamed for the military or political stalemate in Afghanistan,” Abbasi told the assembly. “What Pakistan is not prepared to do is to fight the Afghan war on Pakistan’s soil. Nor can we endorse any failed strategy that will prolong and intensify the suffering of the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan and other regional countries,” he asserted. Ghani in his address to the assembly, however, urged Pakistan to hold a state-to-state dialogue with Afghanistan “on how we can work together earnestly to eliminate terrorism and contain extremism”. Sources in Islamabad claimed that a meeting between Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif and United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson scheduled for later this week had been postponed at Pakistan’s request. The meeting is now expected in the second week of October.: The Dawn news
Don’t blame Pakistan, Haqqanis were your ‘darlings’ at one time: Asif tells US
Pakistan refuses to take the blame for the Haqqani Network and other alleged militant outfits, reminding the United States that these ‘terrorists’ were considered the ‘darlings’ of the White House up until a few decades ago. Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, who is attending the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, made remarks to this end at the Asia Society forum on Tuesday. “Don’t blame us for the Haqqanis [the Haqqani Network] and don’t blame us for the Hafiz Saeeds [referring to the
head of banned Jamaatud Dawa]. These were the people who were your darlings just 20 to 30 years back. They were being dined and wined in the White House and now you say ‘go to hell Pakistanis because you are nurturing these people’.”Further clarifying Islamabad’s position, Asif said: “It is very easy to say Pakistan is floating the Haqqanis and Hafiz Saeed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. They are liabilities. I accept that they are liabilities, but give us time to get rid of them because we don’t have the assets to match these liabilities and you are increasing them [our liabilities] further.” He said that Pakistan is ready to work with the United States for effective management of the Afghan border to stop terrorist infiltration and to facilitate a peace settlement in Afghanistan. In the past, the US has accused Pakistan of not taking significant action against the Haqqani Network. Washington claims the militant outfit has been operating out of “Pakistan-based safe havens” to threaten US and Afghan forces in Afghanistan. Source: The Dawn news
Court to indict Nawaz on Oct 2
ISLAMABAD - Accountability Court Islamabad on Tuesday fixed October 2 to indict Nawaz Sharif in the corruption references after the former prime minister appeared before it. The court also provided copies of the corruption references to him. Nawaz Sharif appeared before the court located in the judicial complex in the federal capital, a day after he returned from London where he was with his ailing wife. During The brief hearing, Nawaz Sharif informed the accountability court Judge Muhammad Bashir that his wife was unwell and he needed to attend to her. He was then allowed to leave the court. The court then adjourned for 10 minutes before continuing with the normal case proceedings. The appearance was just a formality to ensure that the accused was ready to face the trial. Nawaz Sharif stayed at the
court for about 10 minutes. He was accompanied by his lawyer Khawaja Harris who would represent him as a counsel in the corruption cases. Meanwhile, for non-compliance of court summon orders, the judge issued bailable arrest warrants for Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz, Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar with the direction to prosecution to produce them before the court on the next date of hearing. The accused were further asked to furnish a bail bond of Rs1 million each to secure their bail in these corruption references. Realising the messing up of things and breach of court sanctity by the supporters and leaders of ruling PML-N, the judge marked the former premier present and asked him to leave and had taken break of 10 minutes. Scurity staff at Sharifs’ Jati Umra residence in Lahore refused to accept the summons for Hussain and Hasan Nawaz, stating that they reside outside the country. The corruption references against Nawaz and other family members included a reference about the London flats – numbered 16 and 16-A and 17 and 17-A at Avenfield House, Park Lane. The second is regarding Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Company, Jeddah, while the third reference is about Flagship Investment Limited and 15 other companies..... Source: The Dawn news

NAB court indicts Ishaq Dar in corruption case, hearing to start Oct 4
An accountability court in Islamabad on Wednesday indicted Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in a corruption reference filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).The reference was filed against Dar for possessing assets beyond his known sources of income. The minister pleaded not guilty to all charges read out by Accountability Judge Mohammad Bashir, terming them baseless. Following the indictment, NAB presented before the court a list of witnesses against the accused. Dar’s counsel, Amjad Pervez, pleaded that his client did not receive the notice the court usually issues seven days prior to the indictment, but the judge told him that since his client had not appeared in the first hearing on Sept 19, this could be taken to mean that he was allowed the seven-day notice period. The court asked NAB prosecution to present at least two witnesses who would testify against Dar. After the hearing, PML-N leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry while talking to reporters said the court has summoned two witnesses, both of whom are are bank officials from Lahore, out of the 28 prosecution witnesses. Meanwhile, the court rejected an application
filed by Dar requesting exemption from personal attendance in court hearings and said the case would be heard on a day-to-day basis after Muharram holidays. The hearing was subsequently adjourned till October 4.A situation of chaos was observed outside the accountability court when Dar arrived for the hearing. The doors to the court were shut for reporters, and the finance minister had to wait at least 20 minutes outside before he was allowed to enter the court premises from the back door. On Monday, Judge Mohammad Bashir had handed over a copy of the reference filed by NAB to Dar’s counsel, along with copies of related documents, which comprise 23 volumes. The Dawn news

Israel cuts Elor Azaria’s sentence by four months
Israel’s military chief of staff has reduced the sentence of a soldier convicted of manslaughter for shooting dead a severely wounded Palestinian, a decision denounced by Palestinian leaders as a “license to kill without any accountability”. The move to cut Elor Azaria’s sentence from 18 to 14 months was announced on Wednesday, about 18 months after he shot a bullet from close range into the head of 21-year-old Abdel alFattah al-Sharif. “Despite the fact that it is clear from the words of the chief of staff that Azaria’s actions were contrary to the code of conduct and to the values of the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) ... he decided to do so out of consideration of the fact that he is a combat soldier and a warrior” who had “endured a lot”, Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, said. But human rights groups and Palestinian leaders, who had already slammed the 18-month sentence as “extremely lenient”, said Wednesday’s decision was further proof that for Israelis, “Palestinian lives mean nothing to them”. “We are in a system of apartheid. The reduction of the sentence is an encouragement for Israeli soldiers to commit violations” against Palestinians, Mustafa Barghouti, senior member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) central council, told Al Jazeera. “In comparison, Palestinians are subjected to collective punishment whenever one of them is accused of committing a crime,” he said. He cited the demolitions of homes of families of Palestinians accused of crimes, which has now affected 40,000 people, adding that families are being deprived of services, including

North Korea lacks ability, intent to attack U.S. planes, experts claim
Military analysts say North Korea doesn’t have either the capability or the intent to attack U.S. bombers and fighter jets, despite the country’s top diplomat saying it has every right do so. They view the remark by North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and a recent propaganda video simulating such an attack as tit-for-tat responses to fiery rhetoric by U.S. President Donald Trump and his hardening stance against the North’s nuclear weapons program. By highlighting the possibility of a potential military clash on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea may be trying to create a distraction as it works behind the scenes to advance its nuclear weapons development, said Du Hyeogn Cha, a visiting scholar at Seoul’s Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Another possibility is that North Korea is trying to win space to save face as it contemplates whether to de-escalate its standoff with Washington, he said Tuesday. Speaking to reporters before leaving a UN meeting in New York, Ri said Trump had “declared war” on his country by tweeting that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “won’t be around much longer.” Ri said North Korea has “every right” to take countermeasures, including shooting down U.S. strategic bombers, even when they’re not in North Korean airspace. The U.S. frequently sends advanced warplanes to the Korean Peninsula for patrols or drills during times of animosity. Last weekend, U.S. bombers and fighter escorts flew in international airspace east of North Korea to the farthest point north of the border between North and South Korea that they have in this century, according to the Pentagon. Hours after the flights Sunday, a North Korean government
jority, or face a much tougher path toward dismantling it. John Thune, a member of Republican leadership in the Senate, said the party would likely not try to undo Obamacare again until it was clear there were enough votes for it. “I don’t anticipate that we’ll probably be picking it up again,” he told reporters. “I think right now the focus is going to be tax reform and we try to be very clear-eyed about how challenging that is going to be but at the same time realize that this would be an important victory for the American people if we can get it across the finish line,” Thune said. A CBS poll on Monday showed 52 percent of Americans disapproved of the Graham-Cassidy healthcare bill, while 20 percent approved. “I will readily admit that the Republican Party has done a bad job of explaining what we’re for in terms of replace on Obamacare,” Republican Senator Ben Sasse said on the Senate floor. Six protesters staged a “die-in” on the floor of a Senate office building on Tuesday, lying on the ground and covering their heads and bodies with a white shroud to represent what they said would be lives lost if the bill passed. Police arrested 181 demonstrators on Capitol Hill on Monday. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said the number of people with health insurance covering high-cost medical events would be slashed by millions if the latest Republican bill had it become law. The CBO also found that federal spending on Medicaid would be cut by about $1 trillion from 2017 to 2026 under the proposal, and that millions of people would lose their coverage in the program, mainly from a repeal of federal funding for Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion. Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive
propaganda website posted a video portraying U.S. warplanes and an aircraft carrier being destroyed by attacks. The video on DPRK Today, which was patched together from photos and crude computer-generated animation, also included footage of North Korean solid-fuel missiles being fired from land mobile launchers and a submarine. The North was clearly trying to claim it has the ability to conduct retaliatory strikes against U.S. attacks, said Hong Min, an analyst at Seoul’s Korea Institute for National Unification. Moon Seong Mook, a former South Korean military official and current senior analyst for the Seoul-based Korea Research Institute for National Strategy, said it’s highly unlikely North Korea has the realworld capability to match Ri’s words. North Korea’s aging MiG fighters won’t stance a chance against much more powerful U.S. fighters escorting long-range bombers. And while North Korea touted in May that it’s ready to deploy new surface-to-air missiles that analysts say could potentially hit targets as far as 150 kilometres (93 miles) away, it’s questionableContinued at Page 6
In a reversal of a longstanding rule, Saudi Arabia has announced that it will now allow women to drive. In a royal decree signed by King Salman bin Abdulaziz, the order said it will be effective immediately but the rollout will take months, Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday. A high level committee of ministers has been set up to examine the arrangements for the enforcement of the order. The committee will take up the recommendations within 30 days from the date of the decree, and will be implemented between 23 and 24 of June 2018, based on the Islamic calendar. The decree said that women would be allowed to drive “in accordance with the Islamic laws”. Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world which does not allow women to drive. While there have been restrictions imposed on women drivers, some female activists have defied the ban leading to their arrests. Women drivers have previously been arrested and cars have been confiscated, activists said. In 2016, Alwaleed bin Talal, an influential Saudi prince called for an “urgent” end to the ban, saying it is a matter not just of rights but economic necessity. “Preventing a woman from driving a car is today an issue of rights similar to the one that forbade her from receiving an education or having an independent identity,” Alwaleed said. “They are all unjust acts by a traditional society, far more restrictive than what is lawfully allowed by the
precepts of religion.” He also detailed the “economic costs” of women having to rely on private drivers or taxis, since public transit is not a viable alternative in the kingdom. Using foreign drivers drains billions of dollars from the Saudi economy, Alwaleed said. He calculated that families spend an average of $1,000 a month on a driver, money that otherwise could help household income at a time when many are making do with less. “Having women drive has become an urgent social demand predicated upon current economic circumstances,” said the prince. A slow expansion of women’s rights began under late King Abdullah, who in 2013 named some women to the Shura Council, which advises the cabinet. Abdullah also announced that women could for the first time vote and run in municipal elections. Source: Al-Jazeera

CAGE’s Muhammad Rabbani to appeal against court ruling
A British Muslim activist who was found guilty of willfully obstructing police by a UK court after he refused to hand over his mobile phone and laptop computer’s pin number, says he is going to appeal against the decision. Muhammad Rabbani, 36, was arrested at London’s Heathrow airport last November and was charged six months later with obstructing police. “I will be appealing this decision,” Rabbani, who is the international director of CAGE, said in a statement on Tuesday. “This judgement confirms that a person can fall foul of terrorism laws for protecting client confidentiality. The principle of presumption of innocence, the principle of client confidentiality and the principle of personal privacy are all too important to surrender even with the threat of conviction.” CAGE, which was founded in 2003, is a nongovernmental organisation that advocates for individuals affected by British anit-terrorism legislation both within the country and abroad. Rabbani said he refused to hand over the gagdet to police because they contained sensitive information from an alleged torture victim of US security agencies. He was ordered to pay court costs of $707 and was granted a conditional discharge of 12 months. “This is a mockery of the concept of due process - the exercise of a principled, rational, truthful, justifiable concern that legitimate confidential obligations should be respected is transformed instead into a strict liability criminal offence,” Gareth Peirce, Rabbani’s lawyer, said. Rabbani was held under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act, which gives police a broad range of powers to search individuals at ports of entry without grounds for suspicion. It has been frequently criticised by human rights groups for its allegedly discriminatory implementation and impact on civil liberties. Under the powers UK police have, anything a person has on them can be confiscated, including communications and data storage devices. The British civil liberties group Liberty has described the law as “breathtakingly broad and intrusive” and said ethnic minorities were disproportionately targeted with Asians 42 times more likely to be stopped than white people. “We’ve long argued that Schedule 7 is ripe for misuse and discrimination,” Liberty said on its website. “We believe it contravenes the basic rights to liberty and respect for private life, as protected by the European Convention on Human Rights, and is therefore
I nt
unlawful.” Last year, Tanzil Chowdhury of the University of Manchester’s School of Law had told Al Jazeera the legislation was being used to “vilify” communities. “Schedule 7 ... has been used disproportionately against Muslim, Asian and Black communities,” he said. “In recent Home Office statistics, drops in the use of Schedule 7 power were noted among all ethnic groups except for Asians which saw a 2 percent increase in the year ending September 2015. “This has the effect of vilifying an entire community who have to continually answer the charge of its imagined criminality.” In an oped for Al Jazeera in May last year, Rabbani said: “What is clear from my experience is that authorities are trying to get a sense of an individual’s beliefs. “Not only is this a violation of the fundamental right to freedom of thought and belief, but there is no link between an individual’s political and religious views and ‘terrorism’. Yet this information is recorded and connections are drawn. “There is no transparency at all about how the information gathered under Schedule 7 will be used. We don’t know if it will be used to profile certain communities, or to design and develop policies, or to assist the state in criminal trials, or as secret evidence. We also do not know whether this information is shared with other agencies.” Alleged abuse of the power of Schedule 7 first came to international attention in 2013, when David Miranda, the partner of journalist Glenn Greenwald, was detained under schedule 7, also at Heathrow. Miranda was held because authorities believed he was carrying filed relating to Edward Snowden, the US National Security Agency whistleblower. A British judge later ruled that authorities had acted lawfully. Source: Al Jazeera
Sweden arrests man over arson attack on mosque
STOCKHOLM: Swedish police on Tuesday arrested a man suspected of an arson attack that damaged a mosque overnight in the city of Orebro, the latest in a string of such incidents in recent years. “We currently see no political or religious motives to this crime and we refrain from all kinds of speculation,” Bo Andersson, the police chief of Orebro, about 200 km west of Stockholm, said at a news conference. He said the suspect was born in 1997, but declined to provide further details. He also said police were “excluding nothing” in the investigation. Images on the mosque’s Facebook page showed a large part of the building burned down as smoke rose from its roof after the attack, which occurred early Tuesday. The mosque can host up to 250 people in-
side, and has thousands of visitors every month. “It’s a sad day today for Muslims in Orebro and in Sweden. It doesn’t feel good at all to wake up to a destroyed mosque,” Jamal Lamhamdi, head of the mosque’s foundation, told local newspaper Nerikes Allehanda. Several mosques in Sweden have been the target of arson attacks and vandalism in recent years but few of the perpetrators have been caught. No one has died in the attacks. Sweden’s largest mosque, in a northern suburb of Stockholm, was badly damaged in a suspected arson attack in April. Several other mosques have been broken into, with vandals sometimes drawing swastikas inside the premises. Source: ArabNews
Middle-class families are paying more taxes, despite Liberal claims: report
The Fraser Institute study finds 81% of middle-income Canadians are paying an average of $840 more a year in income taxes after Ottawa’s changes. Middle-class families in Canada are paying higher income taxes compared to a few years ago, despite claims by Ottawa that it has eased the tax burden on this income group, according to a new report. Vancouver-based think-tank the Fraser Institute said in a report Tuesday that 60 per cent of the 3.88 million families included in its study are paying higher income taxes under the current government. Of those included in the middle-income bracket, 81 per cent are paying higher total income taxes after the changes, an average of $840 more per year. The report comes amid a furor in Ottawa over a recent Liberal proposal to alter tax rules for Canadian private corporations and businesses. The opposition Conservatives have been seizing on the disquiet from some business owners and professional associations, framing the tax proposals as an attack on the middle class. The proposed changes would effectively do three things: limit income-splitting within corporations, raise taxes on some portion of internal passive investments and place new restrictions around capital gains exemptions. Farmers, doctors and other groups have been highly critical of the changes, saying they will deter investments and place undue tax burdens on them. Consultations on the recent proposals will conclude early next month. The Fraser report did not account for those recent proposals, and instead focused on earlier tax changes that have already been implemented. Ottawa has ostensibly taken steps in recent years to add to the tax burden on highwealth individuals while scaling back taxes on the middle class. In 2016, it pared back its second-lowest rate, which applies to Canadians with annual salaries between $45,916 and $91,831, to 20.5 per cent from 22 per cent. It also hiked tax rates on those earning more than $202,800, to 33 per cent from 29 per cent. But those changes have come alongside the removal of various tax credits and
the Harper-era income-splitting policy, which have on the whole raised income taxes on the middle-class, the Fraser report says. Ottawa has so far scrapped public transit credits, children’s fitness credits and education and textbook credits. “The government in its communications is not talking about these tax credits, it is only talking about the rate reduction. And that’s why they’re wrong in their assessment,” said Charles Lammam, the Fraser researcher who wrote the report. “It’s important to look at all of the tax changes, because if you don’t you’ll get a very incomplete picture of the impact on middle-class families,” he said. Lammam’s report analyzed income taxes for 3.88 million Canadian couples with at least one child. The families were broken into five categories. Eighty-one per cent of those earning in the middle income bracket, between $77,000 and $107,000 annually, are paying higher income taxes after the recent changes (an average of $840 per year more). Of the second-lowest quintile, earning between roughly $51,000 and $77,000, 69 per cent are paying higher overall income taxes ($382 higher per year). The highest quintile, earning over $150,000, saw just 51 per cent pay higher income taxes, or $1,151 higher per year. Lammam says Ottawa’s current proposals on private corporations and businesses are likely to raise the overall income taxes of many of the same middle-income earners by removing certain tax shelters. However, there is debate as to how many small business owners will be impacted by the proposals, particularly the changes to passive investments. A poll conducted by Angus Reid Institute last week found that fewer than half of the 852 business owners surveyed said they would be negatively impacted by the passive investment changes. Of those surveyed, 42 per cent said it would hurt their business, while 55 per cent said the changes are unfair. Fourty-four per cent said the income sprinkling proposals were unfair, while 24 per cent said it would have a negative impact. Source: The Province
how much of a threat the unproven system could pose to U.S. aircraft operating far off the country’s coast, Moon said. It’s also unclear whether North Korea would be able to even see the advanced U.S. warplanes when they come. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service told lawmakers in a closed-door briefing on Tuesday that the North’s inadequate radar systems failed to detect the B-1B bombers as they flew east of North Korea. The last time North Korea fired on a U.S. aircraft was in 1994 when it shot down a U.S. Army helicopter around the heavily armed inter-Korean border, killing one of the pilots and capturing the other. The surviving pilot said after his release he was pressured by North Korean officials to confess that the helicopter had crossed into North Korea. In 1969, a North Korean fighter jet shot down an unarmed U.S. reconnaissance plane and killed all 31 crewmembers on board. It’s highly unlikely North Korea would attempt a similar attack now, experts say. Amid tension created by the North’s nuclear weapons tests and threat to detonate a thermonuclear missile over the Pacific Ocean, such an attack would pretty much guarantee retaliation from the United States that could lead to war, Cha said. “The most obvious reason Ri made those comments was because North Korea simply can’t tolerate such high-profile insults to its supreme leadership,” Cha said. It’s also possible that the North is trying to fan concerns about a potential military clash in the region now so
that it can win room to save face later when it tries to de-escalate, he said. “If Kim Jong Un ever offers a moratorium on his missile tests or makes whatever other compromise, he could say he made a big-picture decision to reduce military tension in the Korean Peninsula,” Cha said. He said Ri’s comments also allow China and Russian to restate their calls for a “dual suspension” of North Korean weapons tests and displays of military capability by the U.S. and South Korea. The Trump administration’s stance on North Korea has been hardening in recent months as the North has been stepping up the aggressiveness of its nuclear and missile tests. It conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on Sept. 3, which it said was a thermonuclear weapon built for intercontinental ballistic missiles. It tested two ICBMs in July, displaying their potential ability to reach deep into the continental United States. North Korea has also fired two powerful midrange missiles over Japan in recent weeks. Trump in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly last week said the United States would “totally destroy” North Korea if provoked, which prompted Kim to pledge to take the “highest-level” action against the United States. Ri then said North Korea might conduct the “most powerful” atmospheric hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean, but added that no one knew what Kim would decide. Source: CTV News

FAITH Ibn ‘Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah fasted on the day of ‘Ashura’ and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians honor.” The Prophet said, “When the following year comes, Allah willing, we shall fast on the ninth.” The death of the Prophet came before the following year. The Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (R.A)
By: Syed Hasan Akhtar, M. D. Austin, Texas Member, Islamic Research Foundation International, Inc. The month of Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar year. An important and tragic event took place on the tenth of Muharram that shook the Muslim world. It was the murder of Imam Husain (A.S.), his family members, and his close friends by the army of Yazid. Yazid was at that time the despotic ruler of the Muslim world, who came to power as the selfproclaimed “sixth caliph of Islam” after the death of his father, Mu’awiya. Yazid gave himself the title of ameer-ul-mu’mineen, meaning “commander of the faithful.” Husain(r.a) was one of the two grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), and the younger of the two sons of Hazrat Fatima (r.a) the daughter of the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet loved his two grandsons, Hasan and Husain(r.a)dearly, and since he had no surviving sons of his own, he used to call them his “sons,” out of affection. There are numerous traditions, recorded by many historians, which indicate the great love and respect the Holy Prophet had for his grandsons. According to one tradition, the Holy Prophet declared that Hasan and Husain(r.a)were the “Princes of the Youth of Paradise.” Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) took his grandsons with him, along with his daughter Fatima(R.A) and son-in-law Imam ‘Ali (r.a )to face the challenge of the Christian delegation from Najrain, which had come to dispute with the Holy Prophet about his divine mission. The Christians were awe-struck at the sight of the Holy Prophet and his family, and withdrew the challenge. This event became known as Mubahila, and is recorded in the Holy Qur’an in chapter 3 verse 61. Historical Background During the caliphate of Imam ‘Ali, Mu’awiya declared himself the governor of Syria. After the assassination of ‘Ali (r.a) by a Kharijite, ‘Ali’s elder son, Imam Hasan(r.a), succeeded him, being judged as the most qualified and deserving by the people. By this time, however, Mu’awiya had amassed enough support in and around Syria to unilaterally declare himself caliph of whole Islamic world. In order to avoid bloodshed, preserve unity, and in fact to save the religion of Islam from destruction, Imam Hasan signed a peace treaty with Mu’awiya. The treaty included these
terms: (1) Mu’awiya would be the temporal political head of the Muslim empire; (2) Mu’awiya would not appoint his own successor, but would leave the caliphate to the will of the majority (which favored Imam Husain); and, (3) Mu’awiya would allow the Muslims to live in peace, free from oppression, especially those belonging to the Hashimite tribe (the tribe of the Holy Prophet and his family). Mu’awiya violated the terms of this treaty and, near his death, designated his son Yazid as his successor. Yazid was an immoral and ruthless man with no sense of justice. He employed bribery and coercion to win support. Imam Husain, as the protector and guardian of the religion established by his noble grandfather, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), refused to swear allegiance
desert plains of Karbala, on the banks of the River Euphrates. In order to avoid bloodshed, Imam Husain chose not to resist, and followed Hur’s directions. He and his companions were forced to camp at a great distance from the river, which was the only source of water in the area. On the seventh day of Muharram, Ibn Ziyad, the governor of Kufa, ordered that food and water supplies were to be blocked from reaching Imam Husain’s camp. In the meantime, the ranks of Yazid’s army were increasing by the thousands. The blistering sun scorched the desert sand, and the thirst was becoming unbearable in Husain’s camp. The children especially were becoming dehydrated and weak, and Imam Husain(r.a) pleaded with Yazid’s army to supply water at least to those children, but to no avail.
to him. Yazid realized that he could never legitimize and consolidate his rule without the allegiance of Imam Husain, the grandson of the Holy Prophet. Consequently, he decided that he would either force the Imam to submit to his rule, or else he would have him killed. In the 61st year after Hijra (680 AD), Imam Husain(r.a), while performing the pilgrimage in Mecca, received the news that assassins had been sent by Yazid to kill him. Desiring to protect the sanctity of the Holy City, he interrupted his pilgrimage and headed towards Kufa, in modern-day Iraq on invitation of the people there to come and teach them about Islam. He took with him his family members and close friends, including his six-month-old infant son, Ali Asghar. His journey to Kufa was intercepted by a detachment of Yazid’s army, led by a commander named Hur. Hur had orders to re-direct the Imam to camp in the
On the tenth day of Muharram, Yazid’s army was ready to attack the small band of defenders in Imam Husain’s camp. One by one, his friends and relatives took permission to go out and fight and each one laid down his life in the defense of Islam. Two of his nephews, who were only ten years old, were among the brave soldiers who died fighting. The commander of Husain’s forces was Abbas(r.a), his brother, who had inherited his chivalry from his father ‘Ali, the Lion of Allah. Abbas asked Husain’s permission to go and fight his way through to the river and bring back some water for Sakina, Husain’s four-year-old daughter, and the other children. The Imam reluctantly gave him permission to go and fetch water. Abbas took an empty flask, charged into Yazid’s army, cut through the ranks, and arrived at the river. While he filled the pitcher with water, he himself did not drink a drop, for he reasoned that he could

not do so while Imam Husain, Sakina, and the others were still thirsty. Abbas did not make it back to the camp, however. The whole army of Yazid converged upon him. He died defending the precious pitcher of water. Imam Husain’s six-month-old son, Ali Asghar, was on the verge of death from dehydration. Husain brought him out of the tent to show his pitiful condition to the soldiers in Yazid’s army, pleading for at least enough water to save the infant’s life. The enemy denied his request. A heartless archer from the enemy army shot an arrow that struck the infant, killing him in his father’s own arms. Soon, Imam Husain was left alone to face Yazid’s army, since all the able-bodied male members of his camp had died fighting one by one. He made a final plea to the army of Yazid, reminding them of his kinship with the Holy Prophet of Islam, the love and respect which the Holy Prophet had used to show him, and the numerous traditions in which the Holy Prophet had warned the Muslims not to disobey or injure him. He reminded them of his desire to uphold the truth and his status as one of the true protectors of the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet. He asked to be allowed to leave the Muslim kingdom, so that Yazid would not perceive him as a threat to his power. Finally, he clearly warned them that by shedding his blood, they would be subjected to the wrath of Allah (S.W.T.) and they would lose any hope of the intercession of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). The commanders of the opposing army were unmoved, and reiterated their desire to kill Imam Husain unless he chose to submit to the authority of Yazid. Husain was left with no choice but to take a firm and final stand against falsehood, and to fight for the preservation of Islam. He fought bravely, and in the end he achieved martyrdom. The Significance of Imam Husain’s(r.a) Martyrdom Immediate outcome of Imam Husain’s actions: Muslims and non-Muslims alike have acknowledged that Imam Husain saved Islam from destruction by sacrificing his life. Yazid had been successful in winning over the allegiance of the great majority of Muslims, and the rest of the Muslim world was in a state of moral slumber. The principles of Islam were being plundered, the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet was being tampered with, and phony traditions were being concocted toContinued at Page 12

Darul Qur’an Institute organized its annual summer camp to the Okanagan Valley
Alhamdulillah with the help of Allah, recently Darul Qur’an Institute organized its annual summer camp to the Okanagan Valley. We had 22 students join us this year. On Friday night, the students spent I’tikaaf at the Institute and enjoyed chicken pasta for dinner. On Saturday morning we left the Madrasah and headed towards the BC interior. On the way we made various stops along the highways next to rivers where students enjoyed the scenery and got their feet wet and enjoyed the magnificent scenery! Once we reached our campsite, the students set up their tents and had burgers and hot dogs for lunch. Afterwards, the students went for a cool swim in the lake. We ended the day with BBQ chicken for dinner and s’mores before praying Isha and sleeping! On Sunday morning after praying Fajr and having breakfast, the students went gokarting, playing mini-golf, climbing high ropes and other fun activities. Students also got to ride bicycles through the small scenic town!
For lunch, the students were surprised with a BBQ lunch organized by the local Muslim community led by Br. Aslam Sattar. They prepared kebabs, chicken and lamb cubes, rice, salad and Baklava. After lunch, we had a water balloon fight! Students were engaged in different activities such as swimming, baseball and some played football. By evening, the students ended their day with dinner, s’mores and praying Isha. On Monday morning after praying Fajr and having breakfast, the students packed up, cleaned their campsites and prepared for their journey home. Alhamdulillah, the students had an amazing time! During the days of camping the students prayed all 5 daily Salah and remembered Allah. During the entire trip, the students remained occupied and busy enjoying the outdoors. The staff of Darul Qur’an Institute believes that we are fortunate to live in a beautiful country and we should enjoy it by exploring the great outdoors while remembering Allah. As Allah mentions in the Holy Qur’an:
Say: “Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation; so will Allah produce a later creation: for Allah has power over all things. (Surah Al- Ankabut, 20) We do this to remind ourselves that a place of learning is not just about books, but a place to experience new things and ideas and to create happy memories that will last a lifetime. May Allah accept our humble efforts, Aameen. Staff of Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies May Allah reward the community for their Duaas and support and the following volunteers for joining us and their assistance: Shaykh Islamullah, Imam of Abbotsford Masjid Br Tahir Sattar of Surrey Br Khalid of Abbotsford Br Aslam Sattar of Penticton #BC Parks #Allah’s creation #Camping

AICP Celebrates Hijrah 1439 at Surrey Arts Centre
The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects held a celebration commemorating the New Hijri year 1439 at Surrey Arts Centre on Sunday, September 17th. This celebration was an outstanding success in the preparation, presentation and organization of the AICP and renowned Islamic Chants Group for hosting an entertaining event for the diverse Muslim community attending and participating. Recitation from the Blessed Qur’an initiated the whole celebration of more than 300 attendees. The diverse attendance enjoyed and reacted delightfully to chants praising Allah ta^ala and His blessed Messenger Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. Speeches in both Arabic and English languages reflected on the great insights and virtues of the Blessed Migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa salam. The audience was inspired by lessons from the past that
taught: How to rely on Allah truly, acts of bravery, unity, brotherhood, attachment of protecting land. In addition, the speeches included the greatness and glory of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam and the immense love of his companions to the Messenger of Allah while sharing the very inspiring story of how they presented Islam to the King of Abyssinia during their first migration. The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (AICP) wishes the Muslim Community and the whole Muslim Nation a successful and prosperous New Year that will be filled with Safety and Protection from injustice. Our Centers are welcoming to anyone and everyone who wishes to come and learn. May Allah enable our communities worldwide with a strong commitment to piety and righteousness by virtue of learning and implementing proper religious knowledge Ameen!

justify the rule of Yazid. It was the singular sacrifice of Imam Husain and his faithful followers that shook the Islamic world out of its slumber. The Muslims were forced to ask themselves why the beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet had been murdered so brutally. It then dawned upon the people what the true nature of Yazid and his supporters was. Long term outcome of Imam Husain’s(r.a) actions: Imam Husain, by challenging Yazid and in the process laying down his life, changed the world and re-shaped human destiny forever. Yazid, and indeed all future despots, were put on notice that they would not be tolerated, and that truth and justice would be upheld and would ultimately succeed, regardless of the costs. The Iranian revolution that uprooted and overthrew an unjust government, and the liberation of Lebanon from foreign occupation are two of the more recent exemplars of these principles laid down by Imam Hussain. Imam Husain’s(r.a) Philosophy: Professor Syed Jafar Raza Bilgirami beautifully describes Imam Husain’s philosophy. He states that at Karbala, Imam Husain came to rebuild a system of life. He gave a practical embodiment to the rational concept of justice. He successfully placed the spirit (savage, war-making qualities in man) and the appetite (greed for material things and lust for power) under the command of rea-
life to safeguard the peace and security of human society for all times to come. Imam Husain’s(r.a) Foresight and Planning for the Battle of Karbala: Imam Husain chose not to flee or hide from Yazid, because that would not have exposed Yazid’s corruption of Islam and would have served to legitimize his unjust rule. He knew that by rejecting Yazid’s demands, he would most likely be killed. However, he also did not want to die like any other martyr. He wanted his death to serve as a starting point for a revolution that would strengthen justice and oppose tyranny for all times to come. This type of stance needed planning and wisdom. As pointed out by scholars, Imam Husain’s planning encompassed three factors: 1. The choice of location; 2. The choice of companions; and, 3. Foolproof arrangements for passing on the event to the annals of history. The Choice of Location: Imam Husain(r.a) chose not to stay in Mecca because he did not want his blood to desecrate the Holy Precincts. Besides, if he were to be killed by hired assassins, then the killers’ motives would not be clear and his death would fade away on the pages of history. So he chose to travel to Iraq (the den of the tyrant himself), where his mission would receive the maximum publicity, and where
Yazid’s evil would be best exposed. The events of history proved that Imam Husain was right. The Choice of Companions: Hujjatul-Islam Maulana Ali Naqvi has written that in Karbala, the largest number of true Muslims gathered in the entire history of Islam. Imam Husain was not seeking the best fighters, since his goal was not to fight to win a physical war. He was looking for men of principle, true Muslims, firm and patient, who would go through the utmost hardships successfully. His companions included men of different tribes, coming from different parts of Arabia and beyond. They included, among others, an elderly companion of the Holy Prophet, some liberated slaves, and a young newlywed Christian couple. The age of his supporters ranged from six months to a ripe old age of over 90. The heterogeneity of Imam Husain’s supporting group indicates that he did not want the confrontation with Yazid to be misrepresented as a struggle between two clans, or a campaign for gaining power. Preserving His Sacrifice in the Annals of History: Imam Husain took women, children, and all of his family members with him. This strategy ensured that after his death, his message would be spread through his family members, and that Yazid would not be able to suppress the truth or falsify Imam Husain’s
motives. History proves that it was a brilliant move. His sister Zainab (r.a.), through her scholarly and bold speeches, and with no fear of the tyrant Yazid, eloquently proclaimed the truth and exposed the falsehood of Yazid in his own court. He was speechless and humiliated before her. His court was full of dignitaries, both local and from other nation-states, and his own supporters. They were shocked to hear the truth put forth so forcefully, and many were brought to tears. The same scene was repeated in the bazaars and marketplaces of the country, all along the travel route of the surviving captives. Husain had laid the foundation of the revolution with his blood. His sister Zainab stirred the revolution with her oratory. That revolution changed the world forever.

Rohingya militants deny Myanmar army claims of Hindu massacre
MAUNGDAW, Myanmar: Rohingya militants on Wednesday denied the Myanmar army’s allegations that they had massacred scores of Hindu villagers, whose bodies soldiers displayed to the press after exhuming them from mass graves in northern Rakhine state. Major clashes between the army and the Muslim insurgents erupted last month, triggering a dire refugee crisis with nearly half a million Rohingya fleeing across the border to Bangladesh. An information war has followed, as Myanmar’s government pushes back against UN accusations that the army is waging a cam-
paign of “ethnic cleansing” against the stateless Rohingya, who have faced persecution in the mainly Buddhist country for decades. On Wednesday the army flew journalists to an area where the mass graves of 45 Hindu villagers, including many women and children, were discovered earlier this week. The military has accused Rohingya militants of carrying on the massacre on August 25, the same day the group staged deadly raids on police posts that sparked the military backlash. In its first official statement on the allegations, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) “categorically” denied that its mem-
bers “perpetrated murder, sexual violence, or forcible recruitment” in the area on 25 August. They called on the army to stop “victimblaming,” according to the statement, which was posted on the ARSA’s Twitter account. It used an apparent local name – “Fakirabazar” – for the Kha Maung Seik village tract where the mass graves were found, in the statement posted on Twitter Wednesday. RIYADH: The 87th National Day celebrations in the Kingdom took center stage on Saturday with an atmosphere pervaded by euphoric excitement engendered by the various activities lined up to mark the annual historic event.“The National Day is a precious occasion in which the sons of this country remember the historical saga that was made by the Kingdom’s founder King Abdul Aziz,” Minister of Culture and Information Awwad bin Saleh Al-Awwad said.Al-Awwad said that “the noble sons of King Abdul Aziz followed him with a wise vision and a sound approach toward the foundations of a strong civilized state that united under the banner of eternal unification.”
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Al-Sawah congratulated the people, the king and crown prince on the occasion of the 87th National Day. Al-Sawah also lauded the Kingdom’s wise leadership for the successful march and rapid development being witnessed by Saudi Arabia at all levels. He also expressed gratitude and appreciation for the Kingdom’s ongoing development and growth under the visionary leadership that paid special attention to the telecommunications and information technology sector in the country. In keeping with the occasion, the Saudi capital is decked out in green — the color of the national flag — as an indication of patriotic
enthusiasm, while the Kingdom is celebrating the National Day with traditional gaiety and patriotic fervor. The early hours of Sept. 23 witnessed the birth of the first child at the King Saud Medical City on this auspicious day, which was announced by the hospital on its Twitter account. The hospital held a celebration after the preparation of one medical room with national words, green shawls and clips containing the words “Homeland in our hearts.”Festivities showed people — both young and old — dancing in the streets or in programs held in various venues such as hotels, auditoriums and convention centers in celebration of the historic event. Television channels showed programs which
MOSCOW: The Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday denied allegations that its air strikes had killed civilians in Syria’s Idlib province, saying that in the past few days it had only bombed Islamist militant fighters in the area. Moscow said it was responding to the allegations from the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which on Monday said six civilians had been killed in the province, including a woman and a child. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also criticized Russia on Monday for
the same reason, saying that recent Russian bombing in Idlib had killed civilians and moderate rebels and that this would be discussed with Russian President Vladimir Putin when he visited Turkey this week. Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov of the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that the Russian and Syrian air forces did not bomb residential areas and accused the observatory of making up allegations and of sympathizing with radical Islamist militants. “In the last few days, after drone reconnaissance and confirmation via other channels,
Russian planes struck 10 terrorist targets in Idlib Province,” Konashenkov said. “These were militant bases, ammunition stores, armored vehicles, rocket systems, and workshops fitting out ‘jihad jeeps’ which were located a long way from residential areas,” he said. The targets struck had taken part in a militant offensive last week which surrounded 29 Russian military policemen who then had to be broken out in a special operation backed by air power, he added.

Trudeau government spent $13.6M on sponsored social media
OTTAWA – Since coming to power the Trudeau government has spent more than $13.6 million on sponsored social media posts.A CTV analysis of more than 1,500 pages of documents tabled by the government in the House of Commons last week, reveals that 58 federal departments, Crown corporations, and government agencies have used sponsored posts to get their message out to Canadians, and beyond. The cost: more than $13,677,559.01 The documents were released in response to an Order Paper question from Conservative MP Blake Richards. In responding to Richards’ request, the government disclosed the total cost of sponsored social media posts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram put out by government departments or federal agencies between November 4, 2015, when the Liberal cabinet was first sworn-in, and May 10, 2017. This total does not including the bills from
the Royal Canadian Mint, and the Canada Post Corporation, both of which reported that they’d purchased sponsored posts, but withheld the total cost. Canada Post cited confidentiality as the reason it wouldn’t disclose the amount, and the Mint said it was withheld “on the grounds that the information is considered financially and competitively sensitive.” Also included in the documents was information on analytic data, views, reach, and details of the demographics targeted by the sponsored posts. Gov’t defends outreach Sponsored social media posts are defined in the disclosure as content that the government has paid a social network to boost or get in front of specific eyes, and not regular, unpaid posts. In an emailed statement, Jean-Luc Ferland, spokesperson for the President of the Treasury Board of Canada, said the multi-million dollar spend is about the government’s push to communicate with Canadians in different ways. “Whether it’s Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram—or the traditional interview, press conference or scrum, which happen all the time—it is important for our government to connect with Canadians on platforms with which they are increasingly familiar,” he said. Ferland said that, by going the social media
route, the Liberals have reduced federal advertising spending by 39 per cent in its first year in government. “In contrast with the previous Conservative government, we do not spend millions of taxpayer dollars on expensive and partisan advertisements during major sporting events like the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the World Series,” he said. Top sponsored post spends Two federal agencies spent more than one million dollars each. The top spender was Destination Canada, which is a Crown corporation mandated to promote Canada internationally and generate tourism revenue. Destination Canada reported spending more than $4.3 million (4,323,618.97) on hundreds of sponsored posts. Among them were posts about the “Connecting America” marketing program that was targeted at potential U.S. travellers with the intent of raising American’s awareness of Canada as a travel destination; a package of sponsored posts aimed at potential travellers in Australia, France, Germany, and the U.K.; as well as various other sponsored posts targeting people in Brazil, Korea, Mexico, and Japan. In an emailed statement, Destination Canada told CTV News that the $4.3-million spent on social media generated more than 77 million views, and that its shift to digital marketing is not new.
“Digital marketing, including advertising on social media, is a cost-effective strategy that is ‘always on’ and highly targeted to the right consumers at the right time with the right message. Digital campaigns are a very effective way for Destination Canada to reach potential international travellers,” they said. The second-highest spend was by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, at more than $1.4 million ($1,494,583.01) for two campaigns. One was aimed at informing newcomers to Canada about free settlement services like employment search help. The department said this campaign had more than 11,000,000 impressions. These “ads,” as the department classified them in its disclosure, were focused on newcomers to Canada within three years, with an emphasis on smaller and rural communities, and ran between February and March, 2017. The second campaign promoted the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), the new entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to or through Canada. This promotion was targeted at dual citizens and geo-targeted in Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Netherlands, Taiwan, Israel, Italy, Switzerland, and Australia. It received more than 233,000,000 impressions during the year it ran, between March 2016 to March 2017.

Audit of B.C. mosque charity alleges personal spending, ‘relationship’ with Qatar group accused of supporting terror
By Stewart Bell and Rumina Daya Global News charity that runs a Vancouver-area mosque has been penalized by federal regulators after an audit found its former president and imam spent tens of thousands of dollars on personal purchases including a spa, jewelry, video games and hair dye. The Canada Revenue Agency audit of the Islamic Society of British Columbia also alleged the charity was “controlled or influenced” by a Qatar organization accused of supporting terrorism, although that did not result in a penalty. The Islamic Society operates the Masjid Al-Hidayah and Islamic Cultural Centre in Port Coquitlam, B.C., and was formerly headed by Saadeldin Bahr, who is now serving a 3-1/2-year prison sentence for a 2013 sexual assault at the mosque. CRA documents obtained by Global News allege that during the period covered by the audit — Oct. 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2013 — Bahr made purchases with his personal credit cards and reimbursed himself with online bank transfers from the charity accounts. Using this method, he bought a $5,000 “evolution spa therapy,” the CRA said in a letter detailing the audit results that was sent to Bahr and three other directors in June 2016. Auditors said the shipping address for the spa appeared to be Bahr’s home address. He also bought dish sets, flowers, groceries, pharmacy items, air travel, restaurant meals, car parts, car washes, gas, dry cleaning, a food processor, PlayStation games, an iPad and an iPhone, the CRA letter said. Although some expenses for which he was reimbursed seemed legitimate, most “appeared to be for personal use,” the letter said. The CRA said they amounted to an “undue benefit” to a board member totalling $127,000 and accused the Society of failing to devote its resources to charitable activities. The Eid Foundation The audit documents released by the CRA further said the Sheikh Eid Bin Muhammad Al-Thani Charity Foundation (Eid Foundation) in oil-rich Qatar had “maintained some level of control or influence over the affairs” of the B.C. charity. “The organization’s connection to and possible control by the Eid Foundation is particularly concerning given that publicly available information … indicates that the Eid Foundation is alleged to have provided support to terrorism,” the CRA Charities Directorate wrote. “Our research indicates that the Eid Foundation is a member organization in the Union of Good, a global coalition of Islamic charities operated by Hamas, a listed terrorist entity in Canada,” read the letter. In May, the CRA said in a “Notice of Penalty” letter that while it had initially proposed a $126,000 penalty for Bahr’s spending, it had decided not to follow through after the Islamic Society said it would remove him from the board and improve its internal controls, financial oversight and record keeping. But the CRA did impose a $9,000 penalty against the charity for issuing $182,000 worth of donation receipts that were deemed “not compliant.” The letter said the penalty could be paid to another registered charity. Qatar group was one of several areas of possible non-compliance No penalty was imposed in relation to charity’s
A
“relationship” with the Qatar group. The Islamic Society’s lawyer, Sebastian Elawny, said the CRA had found no wrongdoing and was satisfied with thecharity’s reply to the allegations. “The organization’s response was clear and the evidence was unequivocal in proving that the organization was not involved in any activities involving terrorism. Had there been any shred of evidence supporting a terrorist financing claim, the CRA would not have permitted the organization to continue to be designated as a registered charity,” he said. One of four organizations listed on the CRA website as “penalized,” the Islamic Society of B.C. built a mosque with a gym and underground parking that opened in 2003. Recent visitors have included Christy Clark, when she was the B.C. premier, and local MP Ron McKinnon, a Liberal member of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. McKinnon’s office said the MP was unaware of the CRA audit and did not know about the sexual assault case against Bahr until July 2016. “The main issue probably was the personal expenses of the person that was running the organization being mixed up with the organizational expenses,” said Mark Blumberg, an expert in non-profit and charity law who reviewed the CRA documents. He said the CRA had also expressed concerns about possible terrorist links. “Canadian charities have to be scrupulous and careful that when they’re dealing with foreign partners that they avoid any even perception that those organizations could be involved with a terrorist organization,” said Blumberg, a partner at Blumberg Segal LLP. The allegation that the Eid Foundation was “directly involved” in the affairs of a B.C. charity has emerged as Qatar is under diplomatic pressure from its Arab neighbours for allegedly bankrolling groups spreading extremism in the Middle East. In June, the governments of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain closed their borders with Qatar and placed dozens of charities and individuals on a terrorist list. The Eid Foundation was among them, the Gulf News and Al Arabiya reported. Also listed was an alleged Eid Foundation cofounder and ex-board member, Abd al-Rahman alNuaymi. The United Nations has identified him as a key financier of Al Qaeda in Syria and Iraq. The Eid Foundation said Nuaymi had not served on its board since 1999. The Canadian charity’s relationship to the Eid Foundation was one of several areas of possible noncompliance raised by the CRA in its 32-page “preliminary findings” letter. The letter said the Islamic Society’s records “indicate that a 2005 agreement was signed between the organization and the Eid Foundation.” Documents mentioned that two board members would be “from Qatar,” the CRA wrote. “The organization’s records refer to the Eid Foundation as ‘our board members and partners,’” according to the CRA letter. Ali Al Suwaidi, an Islamic Society board member between 2006 and 2010, “appears to be a representative of the Eid Foundation,” the CRA wrote. The Eid Foundation was “in control of employing” an Islamic Society imam, Ayman El Najjar, the CRA wrote. El Najjar is no longer the mosque’s imam and filed a civil suit against the Society in
Opening Soon
2012. The Society responded in court documents that El Najjar was “employed by the Sheikh Eid Charitable Association” to be the mosque’s imam, but that there were complaints he “preached an extremist doctrine” — an unproven allegation he denies. The CRA said the Eid Foundation began contributing financially to the Islamic Society in 2005. During the period covered by the audit, the Qatar group transferred almost $80,000 to the Islamic Society, the CRA said. Auditors also found transfers in February and July 2010 of $68,000, which the CRA said showed “an ongoing pattern of funding from the Eid Foundation.” The Islamic Society denied any “affiliation or relationship” with overseas groups, and said it had only used the Eid Foundation to transfer money to Canada due to
banking restrictions in Qatar, the CRA wrote. But the CRA said it found no such restrictions and that documents reviewed by auditors indicated the relationship “goes beyond the facilitation of fund transfers” and that “the Eid Foundation was directly involved in the organization’s affairs

Mobilization Against War and Occupation Protests Ongoing War on Yemen
By Janine Solanki, MAWO In late September, the United Nations reported that there are nearly 700,000 suspected cases of cholera in Yemen, and over 2,000 people have died from the disease since April 27, 2017. Yemen is facing the world’s worst cholera outbreak on record. One must ask, how can this happen? This humanitarian crisis is one of the devastating consequences of the two and a half year-long Saudi Arabianled, US-backed bombing of Yemen. Saudi Arabia and their allies have also imposed a land, air and sea blockade on Yemen, deepening the crisis. With all eyes on the United States and US President Trump’s war-mongering rhetoric, his speech at the United Nations on September 19th stepped up the US agenda of wars and occupations, especially with threats against North Korea, Venezuela and Iran. The US Senate also recently passed a $700 billion military budget, increasing from last year by $80 billion. The job of antiwar organizations is to respond to and protest against these dangerous threats and military interventions. This October, Mobilization Against War and Occupation will mark 14 years of antiwar organizing, educating and organizing. As the new era of war and occupation continues to wreak havoc on the lives of oppressed people around the world, it is up to all peace-loving people to stand against war.
On September 22nd, MAWO organized their monthly antiwar rally and petition campaign, with the demands: “US/Saudi Arabia Hands Off Yemen!” “US Out of Afghanistan!” and “US/Canada/NATO: Hands Off Syria, Iraq, Venezuela, North Korea, the Middle East and North Africa!” This action, happening every month for 14 years, is an important opportunity to raise antiwar demands in public protest, and to reach out to the general public with antiwar information and petitions. The rally included MAWO chair Alison Bodine, who spoke about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen that has been created by the Saudi-led war, and encouraged passers-by to sign the petition against Canada’s $15billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia. This month, participants got to hear from Estea Elements and Trevor Mills, two talented local Hip Hop artists whose music reflects the struggle for peace. The rally also included poetry read by a local Iraqi poet. Join MAWO for the next monthly antiwar rally and petition campaign on Saturday October 7, 2pm outside the Vancouver Art Gallery in Downtown Vancouver. The upcoming rally will be part of International Days of Action called by the United National Antiwar Coalition and other antiwar groups in the United States, marking 16 years of the US-led war and occupation in Afghanistan. The Cold And Flu Symptoms
By:Rebecca Zamon The Huffington Post Canada t is officially cold and flu season in Canada, and despite all your best efforts (like getting the flu shot, or keeping your immune system in tip-top shape), there’s still the possibility of you getting hit by the virus. And the number one culprit? Probably the people you work with. After all, who doesn’t have that co-worker who comes to work with a sore throat, claiming “I’m sure it’s just an early morning thing”? Or the one who talks about the stomach bug going around their kid’s daycare and just happens to have to run to the washroom before the morning meeting? In good news, Health Canada reveals the most recent flu numbers show a downward trend from years past, so hopefully that new flu shot really is working its magic. But just in case, here are the people you’ll want to shift away from in the elevator — so they can’t take you down with them.
avoid them.
Sure, some offices are just freezing, but The One Who Keeps Falling Asleep people who are cold could be displaying signs of a weakened immune system — or worse, the start of the chills that come with the flu. The One Who Can’t Stop Coughing

The One With The Sore Throat If someone’s complaining about a sore throat, stay away. It’s a standard symptom of the flu, and can show up one to four days after they get the virus — exactly the time when it’s the most contagious. The One Who’s Always Shivering Unfair? Maybe. But people who are dehydrated could be more likely to get sick, because their systems aren’t being cleaned out in the same way. Plus, if they’re already getting sick, they could be getting dehydrated faster, which will keep them from recovering.

Another Angle!
By : Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker ooking at things from different angles gives us new thoughts many times. We have such a fix mindset that when we look at anything, any problem our mind cannot make the right decision. The world we live in changes fast, people have lots of difficult situations in life. We have to let go some of our likes and dislikes, look at their situations from different perspective, keeping our prejudices aside. In our family, if all the members try to look at a problem from a different perspective then the solution will be much easier.
L
THIRD PERSON Whenever we are in any problem or difficult situation, take some time to mentally come out from it for a few minutes, think like an outsider, like a third person who is not involved in it, we will definitely see things we have not noticed before.
POWER OF POSITIVE THOUGHTS Every person has inner strength which even he or she is not aware of. That inner quality comes out at a time of difficulty when we just go on thinking about how difficult our situation is, how big our problems are. We cannot even see the solution right in front of us, like blessings in disguise. Whenever we
think positively it immediately removes that mountain load of worries which blocks us from thinking about the right solutions. Sometimes even problem does not look as big and sad as before.

Life is not a bed of roses but it certainly is a garden of flowers. What we give the universe comes back to us. In spite of having good thoughts and deeds we do suffer. People have different theories for that. Our problems are due to our decisions and actions in past, some problems are in our destiny, whether we believe it or not. Some problems are like blessings; it is to prepare us for some good in the future, to bring out good in us, to prevent us from becoming destructive, arrogant or such qualities, which can bring us bad days. ho do you turn to when your life falls apart? A few years ago, Abida Rahim’s life did. A single washroom pipe in Abida’s rental home was the reason for it all. On a cold winter’s night, Abida’s oldest of eight kids woke her up to tell her about the flooding in all the rooms. The washroom pipe had burst. As Abida walked around the house to investigate the damage, she could feel the water up to her ankles. Within hours, the carpets, the beds and the furniture were drenched with water. Abida’s life had never been easy but this was one situation she didn’t know how to handle. The next day, the walls were stained with mold and bugs started breeding on the floors. Abida was buried under stress by the cards life dealt her but she reached her melting point when she saw her one-and-a-halfyear-old daughter eat a dead cockroach she found on the floor. Though Abida’s husband, Salman, was present throughout this difficult time, his disability prevented him from alleviating the issues. Salman was in the army back home. A decade ago their home country went through a long period of instability. Militias took over government compounds and not a single soldier was spared. Salman was held captive for days, the torture left him disabled. Since then Abida has had to assume the role of the headof the household. Abida tried to contact her landlord but he was out of the country on vacation. That’s when she reached out to the Muslim Food Bank & Community Services to find a way out of her horrific circumstances. In her first meeting with caseworker Hiba Ali, Abida shared graphic photos of her home
to show the extent of the damage. From that point on, it was a quest for Hiba to get things moving for this family. “It was a challenge because there were children living in unhealthy and unsanitary conditions,” Hiba recalled. She tried to find housing for Abida but due to the large size of her family, landlords either denied their application or asked for such exorbitant rent that Abida couldn’t afford to pay it. Meanwhile Abida and her family continued to live with the mold and the infestation in her home. As a temporary fix, Hiba reached out to the community to arrange for blankets because everything Abida owned was destroyed in the flooding. “We sent out a mass email to both Muslims and non-Muslims saying we need help,” Hiba said. Thanks to donors, Hiba managed to gather enough blankets to keep Abida’s family warm through the cold nights. Hiba also arranged mattresses and with the help of volunteers, delivered them right to Abida’s doorstep. “Our volunteers were just amazing! They picked up the mattresses from Coquitlam, from Cloverdale and from New Westminster.”The issue at hand was still getting Abida a decent accommodation so Hiba recommended getting two apartments side-by-side. With tearful eyes Abida asserted that splitting her family was not an option for her. That put a lot of pressure on Hiba because she knew that if Abida’s kids are not relocated into a safe environment, authorities may intervene and put the kids in foster care. “I told her that if she doesn’t take this option then they will be in shelters and they’re all going to be split up,” Hiba recounted. The landlord finally returned from his trip and got the home cleaned. In the meantime, he gave Abida a notice to vacate his property. He blamed her family for the
will have to do what you have to do in order to survive - but be sure you’re still looking for ways to improve yourself and progress to something better and something that represents your true self. Setting aside time to pursue your dreams is important because these are things no one can take away from you. You own the right to all your dreams and the ability to make them come true. At the end, it’s all about you - about your uniqueness - about your dreams! The key is to still be practical, but also to be passionate. You were not meant to live this life doing just what is required to survive, you were meant to live life valuing your dreams. Don’t be afraid of failure, because failure is a learning experience that will strengthen you and prepare you to do better in the future. Would you rather sit around and live in the regret of not knowing what would’ve happened if you had tried or would you rather lead an exciting life by taking on risks and challenges that will ultimately lead you towards reaching your dr eams. It’s never late to start Living Your Dreams!
elf-respect is crucial to self-care because it protects you from settling for less when you deserve the best. This is toxic to how you view yourself and how you allow others to treat you, your values and your boundaries. If you allow others to trample over your expectations constantly, you’re debasing your worth and your selfesteem. You might be afraid that if you have high standards for yourself, people might perceive you as a high-maintenance person and even abandon you in the process. In fact, it’s probably a good thing that they do that and reveal that earlier during your important journey. At the end of the day, your opinion of yourself and what you deserve is all that truly matters to you in your life. Having high standards for yourself, your career and relationships protects you in the long-run. Think of some things that fall below your standards as bad experiences. You’re not getting what you need and want out of it, but the person on the other side is. It’s not worth the time and your energy if someone else is benefiting from the positive return. Life is too short to waste your energy by allocating resources into goals that are not truly your own. Caring for ourselves means remaining authentic and recognizing our true passion. Don’t be pressured into picking a certain career path just because society says it’s the right one for you, don’t always settle for jobs just because they’ll pay the rent, don’t pursue a major just because of its financial rewards unless it’s something For any inquiries please email at that really interests you. mishap that had taken place in his absence. It was now up to Hiba to do the legwork and find an affordable option for this family. Hiba looked through newspaper listings and found a five-bedroom home for rent. She knew that Abida would not be able to afford the advertised rent so she contacted the National Zakat Foundation, a charitable organization based out of Toronto. Hiba related the family’s challenges to them so they agreed to pay part of Abida’s rent for six months giving Abida some breathing room until she could find a permanent solution for her family. Next, Hiba called the landlord and introduced herself as a social worker and let him know about Abida’s situation. Besides negotiating the rent down, Hiba also convinced the landlord to accept part of the rent payment from Abida and part of it from the National Zakat Foundation. The landlord agreed and Abida’s family moved in shortly but that didn’t come without its challenges. The landlord had difficulty communicating his expectations to Abida due to language barrier. Abida didn’t speak English fluently but, more importantly, she was not well-acquainted in how manage upkeep of a home. She came from a different country that had a different set of rules and way of doing things. Having eight young kids didn’t help either. The house was a mess most of the time and the landlord made his displeasure known.Hiba had to step in yet again but this time it was in the form of an educator. Hiba taught Abida that just as tenants have rights so too they have responsibilities. She said that it was up to Abida to ensure there is minimal wear and tear on the rental home and a basic level of cleanliness is main-
tained. That was not an easy task for Abida to shoulder all by herself which is why Hiba advised her to assign some of the chores to her kids. Through these simple lessons, Hiba helped Abida integrate into Canada as well as be an effective parent. The end of six months was fast approaching and all the rental homes available in the lower mainland were not within Abida’s budget. Though she had applied for BC Housing, her options were limited because she was not willing to move far from New Westminster. Hiba encouraged Abida to be willing to move to the Fraser Valley if a decent option comes up. “I told them that if you open up your options and broaden your scope, you’re going to have a) a home, b) lower rent and c) your family will stay together,” Hiba stated. Abida agreed to list more options in her application for subsidized housing and not long after, she and her family were placed in Chillwack. During the course of the journey in difficult journey in Abida’s lifeHiba provided multi-layered support. Whether it was finding mattresses to sleep on, lending a sympathetic ear to Abida as she went through emotional turmoil or finding her financial support when she couldn’t afford shelter for her kids, Hiba did it all.

5 Reasons Why Pakistan is the next “Silicon Valley” of Asia business plans, advises them on internal op-
By:PakWired or decades, Silicon Valley has long been a ripe, fertile incubator for tech startups, but a hot, new player is emerging in the far east – Pakistan. With a largely untapped market, fresh talent pool, low startup costs and a nurturing tech community, Pakistan is poised to develop a number of tech startups and is quickly becoming known as the “Silicon Valley of Asia.” Here are five reasons why Pakistan is the hot, new place to invest in tech: 1. A growing and thriving technology ecosystem. At one point, tech incubators and Pakistan had nothing in common. There was no reason to: The country was more known for nurturing hospitals or agricultural industries than supporting a tech community. Much of that has changed, though in recent years, as technological investments have moved full force to Pakistan. Today, the country is a beehive of tech activity and technology investments are proliferating. Mobile apps are hot. No official numbers exist, but there is a wave of tech accelerators, incubators and university programs cultivating ideas and innovation. There are nearly 3 dozen incubators, backed by universities, government and private industry. One of the first successful technology innovators, Plan9, launched in August 2012. Backed by the Punjab Information Technology Board, it hopes to boost entrepreneurship in the country. Founded by Dr. Umar Saif, it helps tech startups with networking,
erations, monitors product development and connects companies with clients. Since its launch, Plan9 has graduated nearly two dozen companies and more are on the way. 2. A pool of talent. Building a technology company is one thing. But having the talent to staff critical projects is another. With outsourcing still on the rise, Pakistan has the luxury of a rich pool of top talent to recruit from. The IT industry in Pakistan has more than 100,000 employees, with top companies such as Techlogix, TRG, Systems Ltd, LMKR and TPS, among others. Pakistan’s tech industry doesn’t rival the much larger India, for example, but it is still growing. Not only is Pakistan nurturing its existing talent, it’s also bringing up a whole new, young crop of future tech employees – women. Since 2012, hundreds of girls are learning technology as part of the Pakistan Social Association (PSA) that gives young girls in rural villages around Islamabad training on computers and the Internet. The girls receive certifications and are encouraged to further their studies. More than half of some cities are made up of women in villages. 3. Money to invest. Not only are companies talking about investing in Pakistan, they’re putting up the cash to prove it and are nurturing talent. Tech incubators and accelerators such as Plan9 and Invest2Innovate are connecting
By:Zubair Ahmed akistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has indicated that General Elections in Pakistan for the national and provincial assemblies scheduled to be held next year might get delayed, and may not take place as per the schedule. While quoting the reason, one of the PBS sources stated: “The final results of the Census 2017 will be available in April 2018” Interestingly, it was only last week that the PBS had recommended to the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to make constitutional amendment to hold next general elec-
Federal Minister for Statistics Kamran Michael, had been reported in media to have said in a press conference: “We have recommended to the CCI in the last meeting to make constitutional amendment to replace the word ‘final’ with ‘provisional’ results to hold next general elections on the basis of 6th population census.” Elections and census result are co-related Additionally, he also stated that elections in Pakistan are supposed to take place after tak-
ance with the latest census result. He further went on to say that even if the final results are declared in April 2018, then ECP will be unable to conduct election next year as per the constitutional requirement. CCI has already given a deadline to PBS to publish the census results as soon as they could by December 2017. The idea behind the deadline is to smoothly conduct elections in Pakistan as per the schedule. https://pakwired.com
has made Sharifs run for their lives, secured 47,099 votes. The third major political player emerging from the Pakistan People’s Party, Faisal Mir secured less than 1500 votes. No, PPP didn’t claim the second runner up position. Historically, PML-N has retained the seat since 1988. By-Election Result Break Down As we have gathered the unofficial numbers, and process a voter trend, interesting insights can been seen in the politics of a definite power centre. Following voting numbers emerge from the polling results at NA120: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz: 61745 (91666 in 2013) Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf: 47099 (52321 in 2013) Azhar of Labaik Group: 7130 Milli Muslim League: 5822 Pakistan People’s Party: 1414 (2604 in 2013) Jamaat-e Islami: 592 As can be seen, creating a major upset is neither a recognized force, nor even an agenda most people in Pakistan can relate with! It is the Mumtaz Qadri hailing Barelvi sectarian outfit Tehreek-e Labaik Ya Rasool Allah – standing third, in addition to the banned outfit, an internationally terrorist declared organization – JuD’s MML which has claimed the fourth position in the voters preference order. As Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Pakistan, Asad Hashim shared his observations, while Pakistan Muslim League-N got 60.6% of the vote cast in 2013, it has gone down to
48.67% in 2017 – only a year before the general elections of 2018. Two other factors quite significant to comprehend the worth of PML-N vote count, are: (i) In 2013, the seat was consted by Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif himself, (ii) In 2017, the PML-N election campaign has been based upon translating the election as a referendum against the judicial ousting of the Sharif. Against the PML-N figures, in 2017 the Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf ’s vote share has increased modestly by 6.1% of the total votes cast versus those it won in 2013 with the same candidate. PTI lost to PMLN by an undaunting 11.55% of votes cast yesterday. This is a loss Dr. Rashid can actually cheer about considering she had been defeated by a rather convincing 26% previously in 2013. The PPP has lost another thousand of its already abysmal voter base in the constituency, and has effectively moved to being a non-entity. There is an alarming drift of the voting trend (over 10% of the votes cast) towards new entrants from the ultra right with decidedly militant leanings. Previously unheard of in the mainstream electoral process, Labaik Group secured 7130 votes (5.62%) making it the third highest scoring party in the by-

companies with angel investors, funding and business opportunities worldwide. Google recently chose a Pakistani-based company, Eyedeus Labs, to participate in an immersion program for startups at its headquarters in Silicon Valley last summer. The company is a university-based spin off that developed a popular photo app. No hard figures exist on the amount of technology investments, but China in February 2014 announced plans to invest $20 billion in the country’s energy infrastructure. It’s a a decision that could have a positive ripple effect, and could spur more technology businesses to invest in Pakistan to support the nation’s growing energy industry. 4. Growing acceptance of technology. Pakistan is home to a fast-growing online community. There are more than 30 million Internet users in Pakistan, with half of them on their mobile phones, and many of them under 30. According to a survey by Ansr.io, Internet penetration in Pakistan has reached
16%, and the country is estimated to be the fifth-largest mobile market in Asia. 5. Success. Nothing breeds more investment than success. Many of Pakistan’s tech startups have been successful, including Yayvo, an online retail store that sells computers, mobile phones, home and kitchen appliances and automobile accessories. Labels eStore is a high-end retail online store that caters to fashion designers in the country. Another success story that launched in Islamabad in 2005 is Convo, formerly known as Scrybe, which was recently lauded by US President Barack Obama. The software product-based company has gained a global audience for its multi-platform social network enterprise that is dubbed the “Facebook of enterprises.” It allows teams to share and work together more efficiently. The platform combines discussions with messages, images, documents, presentations and PDFs, and is available as a desktop app.

NA120 By-Election Results – What Does The Data Say?
By:Leenah Nasir s the fiery by-election for NA120, Lahore, comes to a conclusion, there have been many interesting take aways. According to the data issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), as many as 44 candidates including 32 independent and 12 ticket holders of different political parties took part in the bye-election. Despite the hordes of contesting candidates, only three captured public interest: all coming from the major political parties – PMLN, PTI, and PPP. By-Elections Turn Out The NA120 constituency has a total of 3,21,786 registered voters, out of which 1,79,642 are male while 1,42,144 are female voters. As per the provisional data received, a total of 126,860 votes were cast in yesterday’s by-election. This reflects the turn out to be 39.42%,which is in steep drop as compared to the 51.83% turn out (153,328 votes) for the 2013 general election (GE) for the same seat. Analysts do, however, believe that this drop in turn out values is the normal trend for the by-elections voting in Pakistan. Results Mrs Kulsoom Nawaz, representing the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (N), and wife to the recently disqualified three times Prime Minister Sharif, has won the seat vacated due to her husband’s disqualification. She secured 61,745 votes. The runner up, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ’s Dr. Yasmeen Rashid, who everyone agrees
elections 2017, whereas Hafiz Saeed’s JuD’s fraction MML, got 5,822 votes (4.59% of vote) and stood fourth. While it should be a cause of concern for the ruling party that there has been a visible shrinking of the winning margin despite their extra efforts to make the by-elections into a crusade between the Sharifs and the establishment; the real reason for concern for the think tanks should be: Where are the PML-N and PPP votes going? Who has come in to fill the gap sufficiently left vacant by the mainstream political parties? The shift of voter base away from the left and centre in the urban centres of the country becomes a palpable reality, if any trend is to be studied in these results. In a world where hyperextremism is turning into the new world order, are we losing foot or sticking to the script, only time will tell. https://pakwired.com
23 sports Trump urges NFL to ban players kneeling during anthem Muharrum 8. 1439 September 29, 2017
U.S. President Donald Trump ramped up his fight with the National Football League on Tuesday, calling on the league to ban players from kneeling in protest at games while the national anthem is played. “The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations. The only way out for them is to set a rule that you can’t kneel during our National Anthem!” Trump wrote on Twitter. For the fifth straight day the president denounced the symbolic gesture, which has been adopted by some black players in the last year to protest against racial disparities in the criminal justice system. An NFL spokesman did not respond to requests for comment. Trump praised two teams that played on Monday night and largely steered clear of the controversy. The
Arizona Cardinals linked arms and stood for the “Star-Spangled Banner” along with the Dallas Cowboys, who knelt before the song. Last Friday, Trump told a political rally any protesting player was a “son of a _____” who should be fired, and urged a boycott of NFL games, triggering protests by dozens of players, coaches and some owners before Sunday’s games. Trump’s verbal assault may appeal to his conservative base as the Republican president grapples with critical issues including North Korea’s nuclear threats, a humanitarian crisis in hurricanestruck Puerto Rico, an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and the healthcare struggle in Congress. Paul Ryan, the most senior Republican in the U.S.
House of Representatives, said he also disapproved of the gesture. “People are clearly within their rights to express themselves how they see fit,” he told reporters. “My own view though is that we shouldn’t do it on the anthem.” U.S. Attorney General Jeff Session told an audience at Washington’s Georgetown Law School that the protesting athletes were wrong. “The players aren’t subject to any prosecution, but if they take a provocative act, they can expect to be condemned,” he said. Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic rival in the 2016 election, called Trump’s comments “a huge, loud dog whistle to his supporters” in an interview with CBS. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first kneeled during the anthem
last year to protest police shootings of unarmed black men. His former teammate Eric Reid wrote in a New York Times opinion article that he and Kaepernick chose to kneel as a “respectful” gesture, comparing it to “a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy.” Source: Reuters
Pakistan’s transition an advantage for SL bowling – Chandimal
For all the talk of “rebuilding” that has followed Sri Lanka around, on the bowling front, at least, there is now considerable experience. The two leading fast bowlers, Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep, have now each toured the UAE twice before, even playing important roles in the 2014 victory in Dubai. Lead spinner Rangana Herath, meanwhile, is by far the most-capped cricketer in the series - all of 83 Tests and 389 wickets to his name. If Sri Lanka’s first-choice attack is available through the two Tests, those three bowlers represent a reliable - if not quite menacing - attack. Beneath that core group, however, there are a few raw bowl-
ers. Most notable among these is left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan, who after a promising debut series against Australia, has been a victim of fickle selection Sri Lanka playing him only in the matches in which they field three spinners. He has not exactly run through sides, but he has created chances in the first innings, which is an area Sri Lanka have struggled in. Ahead of the first Test, captain Dinesh Chandimal talked Sandakan up, and expressed confidence in the bowlers on tour. “Herath did really well in the last seven to eight years but we also have another spinner, Lakshan Sandakan, and he is a very good upcoming bowler,” Chandimal said. “Our fast bowlers Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep did well here in the last series. Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Gamage and Dilruwan Perera are there as well. As a bowling unit, I feel we have a blend of experienced and inexperienced players. I’m sure they will put their hands up and do their best.”
They will be pleased, too, to not be bowling to India anymore. Virat Kohli and co. batted first and mounted gigantic totals in each of the three Tests in Sri Lanka, though in each of those games, Sri Lanka’s attack was hamstrung by some sort of injury. Pakistan, who are very much in the process of working out what their batting order will look like over the next few years, have dropped 57 catches this year - at least should present less of a challenge. Or so, at least, Chandimal hoped. one of the most memorable drops coming “Actually we can have a very good ad- against Pakistan during the Champions Trovantage because Pakistan’s main two bats- phy. It has become a pre-series cliché for Sri men are not there in their batting unit,” he Lanka now, but an assurance that catching said. “Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq are would be better this time was again issued. wily old foxes, and they have played really “We learnt a lot from the India series - we good cricket throughout their careers.
