HILE foreign policy may not be the top priority for the new government, the challenges on the external front are no less important. The truism that foreign policy begins at home is more relevant to this country in midst of serious economic crisis and political instability. Undeniably it is vital to put our house in order. Yet the complex external circumstances surrounding the country also demand prudent management of foreign relations. Fast-changing regional geopolitics have a direct bearing on our national security and internal political stability. Given our geostrategic position there is a greater need to take a more balanced approach. While one cannot disagree with the prime minister focusing on the domestic front, it is hard to understand Imran Khan’s pledge not to take any foreign visit for at least three months. It’s swinging to other extreme. There are some critical capitals the prime minister needs to visit and interact with the leaders of friendly countries. There is no decision yet whether the prime minister would attend the United Nations General Assembly session in September. The occasion provides a huge opportunity for the new incumbent to meet other world leaders. That would

On the external front not divert attention from domestic responsibility of the foreign office assistance. Like its predecessors, priorities. It certainly makes a huge difference to have an experienced and full time foreign minister, yet some issues need to be tackled at the highest level. There are some critical capitals the prime minister needs to visit and interact with. As a norm most critical foreign policy decisions lay in the domain of the security establishment. This is certainly not just a perception but a fact. One of the major reasons for this incongruity is the country being turned into a national security state given its geostrategic situation. It is also a fact that Pakistan has been a frontline state in two wars involving superpowers across its western borders twice in the last four decades giving the security establishment a much greater role in determining the direction of the country’s foreign policy. The long period of military rules has further increased the predominance of the security agencies in the decision-making process. The incompetence of successive civilian rules too has been responsible for this imbalance. The narrow security prism has restricted our foreign policy options. This situation must be changed. One cannot agree more with Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the foreign minister, that it is primarily the
and the civilian government to formulate foreign policy — of course with the consultation of the security agencies as happens in other countries. It, however, remains to be seen how the new government takes charge in determining the policy direction and conducting foreign relations. Growing estrangement with the United States, the ongoing war in Afghanistan, tension with India and relations with China will be the major foreign policy issues the new government will have to deal with. Managing its relations with Washington is going to be the most serious challenge for the new PTI administration. The alliance that emerged after 9/11 seems to have come the full circle. The turbulent relations between the two countries have come almost to a breaking point. Once perceived to be a strategic alliance, the relationship has long been transformed into a transactional arrangement. That relationship too is not working with the widening trust gap between Washington and Islamabad. Now the residual transactional relationship has also come under strain after President Donald Trump announced his administration’s South Asia policy earlier this year and suspended military
the Trump administration demands unquestioned cooperation, ignoring Islamabad’s interests. Yet a complete breakdown of relations between Washington and Islamabad is not an option. It was a testy first interaction between the new Pakistani administration and Washington. The controversy over what transpired in the telephonic conversation between the prime minister and the US Secretary of State has clouded the coming visit to Islamabad of the most senior US official in years. But it is time to move forward and find some common ground for cooperation between the two erstwhile allies. Afghanistan remains a thorny issue. The resumption of bilateral talks seems to have broken the ice and reopened a window of opportunity for Islamabad and Kabul to build an atmosphere of mutual trust and put ties on a more stable footing — the lowering of hostile rhetoric, thus paving the way for a conducive environment in which rational discussions on critical issues affecting the two countries can be held. There is, indeed, strong reason for optimism but it would require a greater effort by both sides to remove the major sources of

The Mystery of Eid ! By: Misbah Naseer While moon sighting for Eid has been a debated issue in BC for as long as I can remember, it reached a new level of complication this year. On August 12, BCMA made the official announcement that Eid would be on Wednesday Aug 22. The BCMA had given a clear explanation for not following the Saudi declaration for Eid on August 21: “The BC Muslim Association was unable to follow through with the Saudi declaration, based on our policy, as that would have resulted in 28 days for us. Whereas, the Prophet (peace be upon him) has stated a lunar month can only be 29 days or 30.” Four days later, while scrolling facebook in the evening, I came across another announcement: In light of new evidence brought to the attention of the Board of Religious Affairs, the Board has revised its verdict regarding the month of Dhu al Hijjah 1439. The month of Dhu al Hijjah commenced on Sunday, August 12, 2018.” This left me along with hundreds of others (evident from Facebook comments) perplexed. What was the new evidence? Why did it take four days to evaluate it? Why is the board not giving a proper explanation? Where is the apology for misleading thousands who follow BCMA? These questions were raised to the BCMA on their facebook page.
I sent a message directly to the association which was read but not replied. Regardless of the embarrassment and inconvenience that it caused to many who had to switch days off at work without explanation or were not able to take the day off on Eid at all, I understand mistakes happen. However, leaders should own up to the mistakes and not avoid accountability. I request the BCMA to present the new evidence to its members in order to regain our trust.
‘Kudos to Gracious lady Elizabethanti-Pollution of Water & Land’!
By: Gulshan Aalani ‘Facts of true Human Rights Activists proven by their actions of honest effort of most difficult task. ‘High standard life’ is proven by standing up for the truth and to fight in the ‘way of GOD’-(Q. 2:190)non violence for Justice and for HIS creation. It is undeniable fact that the world is full of corruption, conspiracy, Religious and Medical mal practices, an atheist anti-GOD cheating using the fake ID of spiritual leader, using false titles of progressive, pluralist, and comparative study of Islam in order to eliminate original Islam, polluting the human souls and earth, but worst pollution of ‘Sacred Water’ is by throwing garbage, plastic, Oil spill in the Rivers endangering the lives of humans, Animals and Birds.. Therefore, it is utmost essential to recognize the true H. R. Activist and environmentalist and not fall for the fake ID holders. Who are evil possessed and has tendency to lie, cheat, deceive, and use the fake
ID to gain wealth and fame. On the other hand (followers of Creator-GOD) possess intellect and Angelic spiritual gift to recognize all kinds of evil frauds that is ruining the life, mind and souls. It is a shame that an honest real Human Rights Activist and Environmentalist Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, M.P. Kennedy Stewart and many others including Senior Women arrested at a protest against Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Spoken words of wisdom by one of the 5 Senior Citizen Women after their release Said: “People have to stand up when they see an injustice”. (Ref: Stat Metro Van.). Elizabeth has been charged with civil contempt for blocking the road, which is not a criminal offence, yet she very graciously accepted the charges and surrendered peacefully proving a truthful honored lady. Her many awards speaks a thousand words of her true ID, named as one of the world’s leading women environmentalists by the U.N. Moreover, portraying her best character and good conduct she declared: “she respects the courts and does not take the injunction lightly but believes the pipeline project will cause irreparable harm to the environment and Indigenous rights”. Obviously, who can deny such facts? As an honest Human Rights Activist she endorses recommendations to end human rights violations of Palestinian Children. Therefore, we need to support and speak up for environmentalists and request our P. M. to order the Court to let go her and others without any charges and penalties. Or do we need Kim Kardashian to influence and convince him like she did to U.S. President to give clemency and freed 63 yrs old woman from prison?

PTI’s Arif Alvi secures support of BAP, HDP, JWP for presidential election
The Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) announced on Wednesday that it will back Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) nominee Arif Alvi in the upcoming presidential election. The BAP announcement came after a delegation of PTI leaders, including Alvi himself, federal minister Pervez Khattak, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Qasim Suri and others arrived in
Quetta to muster support for the September 4 polls. The PTI high command met with Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan — also the BAP chief — to secure his party’s support for the presidential election, where Alvi is expected to be up against joint opposition candidate Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PPPP’s Aitzaz Ahsan. “We have decided to support the PTI candidate for the presidency,” Kamal told a press conference at the CM House. The PTI leaders assured its BAP allies that all-out efforts would be made to bring Balochistan at par with rest of the country in terms of development. “We will address the grievances of the people of Balochistan,” Alvi promised. The Balochistan CM added: “We will not make tall claims; rather, we will act to bring an end to the backwardness of the province.” The PTI leaders also met with leaders of Hazara Democratic Party (HDP) and Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) to seek their endorsement for Alvi. The JWP chief Shah Zain Bugti and HDP chief Khaliq Hazara assured the PTI leaders of their support. When asked about the protocol of the Sindh governor in Quetta, federal minister Pervez Khattak stated: “People would laugh at us if we did not end protocol.” He also requested the Balochistan chief minister to keep his protocol at a minimum for the benefit of the masses. SC rejects affidavits submitted by Zardari and Musharraf, seeks assets details of past 10 years
The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the affidavits submitted by former presidents Asif Ali Zardari and retired Gen Pervez Musharraf, and ex-attorney general Malik Mohammad Qayyum regarding assets owned by them in Pakistan and abroad. While hearing a petition regarding the 2007 National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar ordered the three men to submit complete details of their assets and bank accounts held inside and outside the country in the past 10 years within three weeks. The trio has also been directed to disclose before the court the details of assets of their spouses and children both in the country as well as abroad. Nothing could be proven against Zardari: lawyer The counsel representing Zardari, Farooq H. Naek, argued before the bench today that the PPP co-chairman had spent nine years in jail but “nothing could be proven” against him.
He said Zardari should get some sort of compensation for the nine-year prison sentence. At this, the CJP responded that Zardari could only achieve the reward in the form of clearance by the Supreme Court and that the prison sentence did not translate into an exemption from disclosing his assets. Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that political leaders should get the “blemishes on [their reputation] removed”. The bench asked the counsel whether Zardari ever held bank accounts in his name, or in the names of his wife — slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto — or children, in Switzerland. Naek replied that he would respond to the question after consulting Zardari. Rejecting the affidavit submitted by the former president, the CJP then ordered Zardari to submit details of all his local and foreign assets since 2007, including whether he owns or is the beneficial owner of any trust, or is the direct or indirect owner or shareholder of any bank account In his affidavit submitted on Tuesday, Zardari had affirmed that he owns neither moveable or immovable property nor any bank account outside Pakistan. The affidavit was moved before the apex court which is hearing a petition of Advocate Feroz Shah Gilani, president of the Lawyers Foundation for Justice, in which he had named Musharraf, Zardari, Qayyum and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as respondents. In his petition, Gilani had pleaded before the court to order recovery of huge amounts of public money wasted by the respondents through unlawful means against the backdrop of the NRO in 2007.
Musharraf owns apartment in Dubai, 3 cars In his arguments, the lawyer representing Musharraf, Akhtar Shah, informed the court about the assets held by the former military dictator.A statement of assets and liabilities submitted by Musharraf to the court stated that the only property he owned abroad is an apartment in Downtown Dubai worth 5.4 million dirhams. According to the document, Musharraf owns three vehicles, including a 2015 model Mercedes worth 230,000 dirhams, a Tahoe Jeep 2017 model worth 150,000 dirhams and a Chevrolet Impala 2018 worth 130,000 dirhams. He has three foreign bank accounts holding 92,100 dirhams, 21,550 pounds and 268,653 dirhams. Justice Nisar, who was unconvinced by the details provided, wondered whether Musharraf could purchase the Dubai flat from “even the salary of his entire life”. He said Musharraf should appear before the court in person and explain his assets. Shah maintained that Musharraf ’s foreign assets are from his days after stepping down as the president. The CJP asked the lawyer whether one could make so much money from giving lectures, which Musharraf is seen occasionally delivering. “Why don’t I start giving lectures after retirement as well?” he wondered, tongue-in-cheek. The top judge then asked who owned the farmhouse in the Islamabad suburb of Chak Shahzad, to which the counsel responded that it was owned by Musharraf. The bench then ordered the counsel to submit details of assets held by Musharraf and his wife in Pakistan within three weeks.

US rejects UN court jurisdiction UN documents ‘shocking crimes’ by Myanmar army over Iran sanctions case
The United States told the UN’s top court it has no jurisdiction to rule on Iran’s demand for the suspension of nuclear-related sanctions recently reimposed on the country. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague “lacks prima facie jurisdiction to hear Iran’s claims”, US State Department lawyer Jennifer Newstead argued on Tuesday. During the first hearing of the case on Monday, Iran argued that US President Donald Trump breached a 1955 treaty with his decision to reimpose sanctions after withdrawing from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Newstead said the US has the right to protect its national security and other interests. She said the treaty “cannot, therefore, provide a basis for this court’s jurisdiction” in the case. Sanctions on Iran were lifted under the 2015 accord with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany and the European Union. In return, Tehran committed not to develop nuclear weapons. However, Trump said the deal did not do enough to curb the alleged threat from Iran. He pulled the US out of the accord in May
and began reimposing sanctions earlier this month.“This case is entirely about an attempt to compel the US by order of this court to resume” the 2015 nuclear deal, Newstead said. On Monday, Iran’s lawyers said the sanctions were threatening the welfare of its citizens and disrupting tens of billions of dollars worth of business deals. The Islamic Republic’s lead representative in the case, Mohsen Mohebi, branded the sanctions “naked economic aggression”. “The United States is publicly propagating a policy intended to damage as severely as possible Iran’s economy and Iranian nationals and companies,” Mohebi said. “Iran will put up the strongest resistance to the US economic strangulation by all peaceful means.”But the US lawyers held Iran to blame for its economic woes. They have “deep roots in the Iranian government’s mismanagement of its own economy and repression of its own population”, Newstead said. The court in the Netherlands adjourned until Wednesday when Iran will have the opportunity to respond to the US’ arguments. The ICJ is expected to take several weeks to decide whether to grant Tehran’s request. A final decision could take years. Its judgements are binding, final and without appeal, however, it has no power to enforce its decisions. However, whether any decision will be implemented remains unclear. Both Iran and the US in the past have ignored the UN court’s rulings against them. Despite the 1955 Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations, the two countries have not had diplomatic ties since 1980. War of words between US-Russia as Syria attack looms
Russia has deployed a dozen warships to the Mediterranean Sea in what a Russian newspaper on Tuesday called Moscow’s largest naval buildup since it entered the Syrian conflict in 2015. The reinforcement comes as Russia’s ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is believed to be considering a major assault on the last rebelheld enclave in northern Idlib province. Russia has accused the United States of building up its own forces in the Middle East in preparation for a possible strike on Syrian government forces. On Saturday, the Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen frigates sailed through Turkey’s Bosphorus towards the Mediterranean, Reuters news agency images showed. The day before, the Pytlivy frigate and landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov were pictured sailing through the Turkish straits that connect the Black Sea with the Mediterranean. The Vishny Volochek missile corvette passed through earlier this month. The Izvestia newspaper said Russia had gathered its largest naval presence in the Mediterranean since it intervened in Syria in 2015 and turned the war’s tide in Assad’s favour. The force included 10 vessels, most of them armed with long-range Kalibr cruise missiles, Izvestia wrote, adding more ships were on the way. Two submarines had also been deployed. The Syrian government is gearing up for an expected offensive in Idlib province, which is home to nearly three million people and has a large al-Qaeda presence in addition to several Syrian rebel groups. It borders Turkey, which fears an offensive may trigger a humanitarian and security catastrophe. The United States on Tuesday warned the Russian and Syrian governments against chemical weapon use in Syria.State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the United States “will respond to any verified chemical weapons
use in Idlib or elsewhere in Syria ... in a swift and appropriate manner”.The comments came as Russia again accused Syrian rebels of preparing a chemical attack that Moscow said will be used to justify a Western strike against Syrian troops. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Tuesday an al-Qaeda-linked group is preparing the attack in Idlib. Western countries and independent analysts say Syrian government forces have conducted several chemical weapons attacks over the course of the seven-year civil war. Alleged chemical attacks in 2017 and earlier this year led the US to launch punitive strikes against Syrian forces. The Syrian government denies ever using chemical weapons. Damascus has been sending reinforcements towards Idlib for weeks ahead of an expected attack against the last major rebel stronghold in the country. Last week, Russian Major General Alexei Tsygankov, who heads the centre for reconciliation of warring parties in Syria, claimed British special services were involved in plans for the alleged provocation. That brought a heated denial from Britain’s UN Ambassador Karen Pierce during a Security
Myanmar’s military carried out mass killings and gang rapes of Rohingya with “genocidal intent” and the commander-in-chief and five generals should be prosecuted, UN investigators said on Monday. It was the first time the United Nations explicitly called for Myanmar officials to face genocide charges over their campaign against the Rohingya, and is likely to deepen the Southeast Asian nation’s isolation. The UN mission found Myanmar’s armed forces had taken actions that “undoubtedly amount to the gravest crimes under international law”, forcing more than 700,000 Rohingya to flee starting in late August 2017. Speaking in Geneva on Monday, Marzuki Darusman, the mission’s chairman, said his researchers amassed evidence based on 875 interviews with witnesses and victims, satellite imagery, and verified photos and videos. Marzuki said victim accounts were “amongst the most shocking human rights violations” he had come across and would “leave a mark on all of us for the rest of our lives”. He described Myanmar’s military as having shown “flagrant disregard for lives” and displayed “extreme levels of brutality”. “The Rohingya are in a continuing situation of severe systemic and institutionalised oppression from birth to death,” Marzuki said. The UN does not apply the word “genocide” lightly. Its assessment suggests crimes against the Rohingya could meet the strict legal definition used in places such as Bosnia, Rwanda and Sudan’s Darfur region. The team cited a “conservative” estimate from aid group Reporters Without Borders that some 10,000 people had been killed in the violence, but outside investigators have had no access to the affected regions, making a precise accounting elusive, if not impossible. The UN report said military generals, including Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, must face investigation and prosecution for “genocidal intent” in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state, as well as crimes against humanity and other war crimes in the states of Kachin and Shan. The report singled out Myanmar’s military, known as the Tatmadaw, but added that other Myanmar security agencies were also involved in abuses. “Military necessity would never justify killing indiscriminately, gang-raping women, assaulting children, and burning entire villages,” the report said. “The Tatmadaw’s tactics are consistently and grossly disproportionate to actual security threats, especially in Rakhine state but also in northern Myanmar.” In Rakhine state, there was evidence of extermination and deportation, the report added. “The crimes in Rakhine state, and the manner in which they were perpetrated, are similar in nature, gravity and scope to those that have allowed genocidal intent to be established in other contexts,” the UN mission concluded, adding there was “sufficient information” to prosecute the military’s chain of command.
Christopher Sidoti, a member of the investigatory committee, urged the UN Security Council and General Assembly to act on the report’s findings. “We are convinced the international community holds the key to dismantling the destructive veil of impunity in Myanmar,” he said “What we’ve heard in the report really lines up with witness testimonies I’ve heard here. For most of the past year, when official bodies of governance spoke about the atrocities committed in Rakhine state, they called it ethnic cleansing. Now there’s a very extensive UN fact-finding mission recommending that top tier military officials in Myanmar be prosecuted and investigated for genocide. When the members of the panel in Geneva laid out their investigation, they said that they conducted 875 interviews, they talked about the destructive veil of impunity in Myanmar and they said that until that is lifted, the cycle of violence in Myanmar will continue. They said there needs to be a mechanism by which these crimes can be prosecuted and the cycle of violence in Myanmar can be ended. That’s going to be very difficult, we don’t know exactly where this goes. At some point, it will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council and then potentially to the UN Security Council. But we must remember that Myanmar is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, so the International Criminal Court does not have jurisdiction Investigators compiled a list of suspects, which included Min Aung Hlaing and other military commanders. The mission said a full list of suspects will be made available to any credible body pursuing accountability, adding that the case should be referred to the International Criminal Court, or an ad hoc criminal tribunal. Investigators documented mass killings, the destruction of Rohingya dwellings, and “large-scale” gang rape by Myanmar soldiers. The UN’s report drew praise from the ground in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, where refugee camps have taken in hundreds of thousands of Rohingya from across the border. “We are happy for this. If these army people are punished the world will take note of it. They are killers. They must be punished,” said Mohammed Hasan, 46, who lives in the Kutupalong refugee camp. “They killed thousands, we have seen that. They torched our homes, that’s a fact. They raped our women, that’s not false.” Source: Al-Jazeera
Council session on the humanitarian situation in Syria held on Tuesday. “Even by the egregious standards of Russian propaganda, this is an extraordinary allegation,” she said. “It is wholly untrue.”She said the claim was either aimed at increasing “the amount of fake news in the system [or] as a smoke screen for a possible impending attack by the Syrian regime, once again against its own people, in Idlib”.Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said “if the defence ministry says something, then it says that based on concrete facts”. “The Syrian armed forces do not have chemical weapons and have no plans to use them. There is no military need for that. We have stated that more than once. People in their right minds will not use means that are useless from a military point of view in order to trigger reprisals by three major powers,” said Nebenzia. The UN director of humanitarian operations warned a major offensive in Idlib “has the potential to create a humanitarian emergency at a scale not yet seen” in the sevenyear civil war.John Ging called on members of the UN Security Council on Tuesday “to do all they can to ensure that we avoid this”. US Secretary of Defense: ‘Iran will be held accountable for reckless behavior in the region’ Saudi adviser: Sanctions unlikely to stop Iran exports completely A string of senior American officials offer fresh warnings about Tehran’s aggressive foreign policyTrump’s new top Iran advisor Brian Hook accuses Tehran of economic mismanagement PENTAGON: The US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said on Tuesday that Iran would be “held accountable” for its reckless behavior in the region. He was speaking as a string of senior American officials offered fresh warnings about Tehran’s aggressive foreign policy and the effect it has on destabilizing the Middle East. Mattis said that Iran had been “put on notice” that its “continued mischief” in the region — including its support for Houthi
rebels in Yemen and supplying of missiles fired into Saudi Arabia, as well as threats to the Strait of Hormuz — would not be tolerated by the US and its allies. The Defense Secretary went on to say that Iran was the “single biggest destabilizing element in the Middle East region.” In Washington, Brian Hook, the Trump administration’s newly appointed special representative for Iran, said Tehran’s policy of destabilizing its neighbors come at the expense of the Iranian people. Speaking at an event at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies think tank, the envoy highlighted the vast sums spent by Iran on funding Hizbollah and other proxy groups across the Middle East. Slogans making similar points have been chanted at anti-regime protests in Iran in recent months. The protests have intensified as Iran plunges further into an economic crisis exacerbated by a return of tough US sanctions after Donald Trump pulled out of a deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear program. “The regime’s economic mismanagement has put the country in a tailspin,” Hook said. “The rial’s value has collapsed in the
past year. A third of Iranian youth are unemployed. A third of Iranians now live in poverty. “Regime leaders should feel painful consequences of their violence, bad decision making and corruption,” Hook added in reference to the sanctions.Speaking at the same event, Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, said Iran continued to be the primary source of instability in the Middle East. Matiss made his comments at an extended press briefing at the Penatgon, during which various issues across the region were discussed. When questioned about chemical weapons use in Syria, Mattis said that the US had recently discussed the use of chemical weapons in the country with Russia, after media reports that Syria was moving chemical weapons into a rebel-held area the government seeks to recapture. “You have seen our administration act twice on the use of chemical weapons,” Mattis told reporters. “I will assure you that (the) Department of State has been in active communication, recent active communication, with Russia to enlist them in preventing this ... The communication is going on.” Source: arabnews.com
If Iran closes Strait of Hormuz, the UN Security Council is likely to authorize military action . STAVAGNER, NORWAY: Current US sanctions on Iran are unlikely to stop Iranian oil exports completely, a long-time adviser at Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry said on Tuesday, adding Iran would be unable to close the straits of Hormuz and Bab Al-Mandab even partially.Speaking at an oil conference in the Norwegian city of Stavanger, Ibrahim AlMuhanna said Iran would be the first to lose out on a move to block those major shipping routes and that any such action would trigger further sanctions on Iran. Iran has said if it cannot sell its oil due to US pressure, then no other regional country will be allowed to do so either, threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz. “The amount of oil going through the Strait of Hormuz is so large. There’s more than 18 million barrels a day, about two-thirds of world maritime oil trade. Meaning, cutting oil from there will lead to an acute oil shortage and prices will skyrocket,” Muhanna said. “Is Iran able or willing to close completely, or even partially, the Strait of Hormuz or Bab Al-Mandab, or both? The answer is no, and a really big no ... Current sanctions are unlikely to stop Iranian exports completely.” He said if Iran closes Strait of Hormuz, the UN Security Council is likely to authorize military action. Earlier on Monday, Iran went to the UN highest court in a bid to have US sanctions lifted, calling the US move “naked economic aggression.” Iran filed the case with the International Court of Justice in July, claiming that sanctions the Trump administration imposed on May 8 breach a 1955 bilateral agreement known as the Treaty of Amity that regulates economic and consular ties between the two countries. At hearings at The Hague, Tehran asked judges at the world court to urgently suspend the sanctions to protect Iranian interests while the case challenging their legality is being heard — a process that can take years. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the legal move an attempt by Tehran “to interfere with the sovereign rights of the US to take lawful actions, including re-imposition of sanctions. US President Donald Trump pulled out of a 2015 pact between Iran and major world powers under which sanctions were lifted in return for Tehran accepting curbs on its nuclear program. The Trump administration then announced unilateral plans to restore sanctions against Tehran. Source: arabnews.com

Conservatives ask Bernier for proof he doesn’t have Saudi medical trainees allowed to stay in Canada, for now list of party members from leadership election A source familiar with Bernier’s operation More than 1,000 Saudi Ara-
The Conservative party’s lawyers are warning Maxime Bernier not to access a party membership list he obtained during last year’s leadership vote, according to a letter obtained by the National Post. The Quebec MP said last week he was quitting caucus and forming a new political party, little more than a year after he narrowly lost the Conservative leadership election to rival Andrew Scheer. Bernier made the announcement in Ottawa on Thursday as Tories gathered in Halifax for a policy convention. “This letter was ultimately about safeguarding the privacy and personal information of Canadians from unauthorized access,” said a source familiar with the reasons for sending the letter. “People have submitted their contact information to the Conservative party to receive information from the Conservative party, and no one else.” Asked whether the party was worried about Bernier attempting to use the list to identify defectors, the source said the letter was intended to safeguard against “even the possibility of this list being used for a reason other than a Conservative party leadership candidate communicating to Conservative members.” Arthur Hamilton, a lawyer for the party, sent the letter by email and by overnight courier to Bernier’s constituency office on Monday. Hamilton asked Bernier to immediately confirm “that you have neither accessed nor utilized any lists you or your designate possessed as at the point of your announcement.”
said Tuesday that right after the leadership campaign, contact information provided on the official list was deleted from the database Bernier was using to track potential donors — and that a letter from Bernier’s lawyer containing proof of that would be sent to the party this week. About 30,000 people are still in Bernier’s database, the source said, all of whom signed up for the “Mad Max Club” through his website. After choosing a name, writing the party’s constitution and getting set up with lawyers and Elections Canada, Bernier could make an announcement with further details by the third or fourth week of September. Bernier had long ago committed to getting rid of the list at the end of the leadership race. To enter the contest in April 2016, he signed a declaration agreeing to only use membership information “for the purpose of campaigning for the leadership election and not for any other purpose.” But he has already violated the declaration. Bernier agreed then that he would take no steps to “oppose the elected leader in any way,” and signed off on a sentence saying he wouldn’t run against the Conservatives in 2019: “I will not seek the nomination of another political party, or run as an independent candidate, and will not endorse, campaign for or publicly support any opposing candidate or political party, in the next federal election.” Quitting caucus, calling the party “morally and intellectually corrupt” and announcing he would start his own party last Thursday clearly contravene that agreement. It’s unclear, however, whether the party could, or would even consider, taking action to punish Bernier. Compliance deposits of $50,000 had been retained for the purposes of the leadership election, but they have since been returned to the candidates, party spokesman Cory Hann said. bian medical graduates will be allowed to stay in Canada to complete their training, a muchneeded reprieve for teaching hospitals that were unsure how they would handle the sudden and significant loss of staff. Thousands of other Saudi students studying at Canadian universities will, however, still have to leave the country. The 1,053 Saudi medical residents and fellows in Canada received an email late Monday afternoon from the Saudi Ministry of Education “indicating that they may continue in their positions until an alternative assignment is arranged,” said Andrew Padmos, chief executive of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The kingdom initially told the medical trainees to leave Canada by Aug. 31 because of a diplomatic dispute that erupted after Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland publicly called on Saudi Arabia to release jailed human-rights activists. Last week, the deadline was extended to Sept. 22. Residency and trainee programs begin every year on July 1, and those in the programs must complete at least six months to be eligible to write exams. While Monday’s e-mail stipulates that the Saudi medical graduates are to remain in Canada only until they can find alternative arrangements in another country, in reality many of them will likely be able to complete their training here, said Paul-Émile Cloutier, president and CEO of HealthCareCAN, which represents hospitals across the country. For instance, some residents and fellows are entering their last year of training. For others, it could take several years before they can find a training spot in a foreign city, which means they will end up finishing in Canada.
Housing revenues help balance B.C. budget again, but downturn looms
Record revenue from B.C.’s real estate sector has helped the provincial government balance its budget yet again, though it may be the last time the housing sector delivers such a surprise cash windfall to the provincial treasury. The property transfer tax accounted for more than $2.1 billion in revenue for the 2017/18 fiscal year ending March 31, according to government’s public accounts released Tuesday. That’s $266 million more than government was expecting. It also includes extra revenue generated after Feb. 21 when government expanded the foreign buyer tax to 20 per cent and increased property transfer taxes on homes valued at more than $3 million. Home sale taxes have proven a major cash cow for the government in recent years during B.C.’s red hot real estate market. The property transfer tax reached a record amount of revenue in Tuesday’s public accounts, and has grown 128 per cent since 2014.
The extra money was a factor in allowing Finance Minister Carole James to eek out a $301 million surplus in the year-end financial figures on a $51.7 billion budget. But James acknowledged a softening housing market, as well as the NDP’s planned speculation tax, was driving down sales, prices and the property transfer tax revenue that the province has relied upon in the past. “We want the market to moderate, we’ve been very clear about that,” she said. “We think that’s important not only for families and affordability but for our economy. “Do I expect that there may be some change in the money that’s coming in? Yes I do.” New figures on the slowdown will be released in September as part of the quarterly update to the current year’s 2018/19 budget. Home sales in Metro Vancouver in July were at their lowest level in 18 years, and some realtors believe a significant decline in prices is quietly occurring in the market. “Obviously we’re coming off the boil from the housing real estate boom,” said Jock
Finlayson, executive vice-president for the Business Council of B.C. “That’s clearly an area where the slowdown is very much in evidence in the Lower Mainland, and to some extent in the province, in sales activity. It’s going to pinch the government’s revenues for sure. Some of that I think they factored in their budget in February. The question is whether what’s happening now is a bigger downtown than what was predicted in the budget.” James said she’s concerned the previous Liberal government relied too heavily on housing profits as its economic plan. However, her own budget for the current 2018/19 fiscal year also predicts a slight growth in property transfer tax revenue, to $2.2 billion. “It concerns me that we don’t have a longterm stable plan for economic growth in British Columbia if we’re simply relying on money coming in on a speculative market,” said James. “That’s then causing problems for families, individuals, tenants, homeowners, businesses, recruitment and retention.” The year-end financial figures showed a $1.3-billion loss by the Insurance Corp. of B.C., which the NDP has attempted to plug by instituting a cap on pain and suffering claims for minor injuries and an overhaul of insurance penalties for bad drivers. James said the government also made a $950-million “adjustment” to its finances to address concerns independent Auditor General Carol Bellringer made about B.C. Hydro’s use of deferral accounts that push off expenses into future years. Hydro has $4.5 billion in deferral accounts remaining even after the change. The dispute with the auditor over Hydro’s finances delayed the release
The development is good news for the Saudi medical graduates as well as the Canadian hospitals that rely on their service, Mr. Cloutier said. For decades, Canada has had a program under which the kingdom pays substantial sums to allow Saudi medical graduates to train at Canadian teaching hospitals. The doctors-in-training gain valuable experience and provide care to patients in Canada. Ordering the trainees out of Canada would have jeopardized their future careers and forced hospitals to look for ways to fill the gaps left by their sudden departure, Mr. Cloutier said.“The hospitals that have many of these trainees will continue as is. You don’t have to scramble,” he said. Dr. Padmos said the biggest beneficiaries are the trainees themselves, who risked having their careers derailed.“Saudi officials are showing support for their own trainees. I don’t think this implies they are retreating in any way,” Dr. Padmos said. “I also believe this move creates an opportunity for the two sides to settle their differences,” he added. But some of the Saudi Arabian medical graduates have already left Canada. It’s unclear what will happen in those cases, Mr. Cloutier said. It’s also unclear whether Saudi residents and fellows scheduled to start programs in Canada this year will be able to, he added. Source: Globe and Mail of public accounts by more than a month. James blamed the Liberals for years of siphoning away dividends from Hydro, and said her government was trying to reduce the liability Hydro faces by addressing some of the problems now as it conducts a review of Hydro’s operations. Liberal MLA Tracy Redies, a former B.C. Hydro board member, defended the use of deferral accounts. “This seems to be another contrived way of the NDP trying to make the previous government look bad,” she said. “I think it’s really wrong because deferral accounting is the standard practice used by utilities across North America.” Other factors in the annual surplus included increased revenue from federal transfers, natural resources, liquor sales and other tax measures like the provincial sales tax. Spending pressures were last year’s record wildfire costs of more than $560 million, as well more than $3 billion in new NDP spending on health care, education and social services. The government absorbed $3.5 billion in debt from cancelling the tolls on the Port Mann Bridge, forcing the bridge to become a taxpayer-supported liability. Nonetheless, government actually decreased total provincial debt by $918 million and reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio to 15.6 per cent. “Generally, B.C. is in reasonable shape,” said Finlayson. He said there remains “underlying fragility to the province’s finances” because it is at the peak of a larger economic cycle that may lead to a downturn and even a North American recession in the next two to three years. The compassion of the Prophet towards those who abused him
BY: MAJD ARBIL Prophet Muhammad started the message of Islam in Arabia at a time when human rights had no meaning, might was right and the society was entrenched in paganism. In this environment, Prophet Muhammad taught a message of justice, peace, human rights, animal rights and even environmental rights as ordained by God, the One True Creator of all that is in the universe. God has shown us in the character of Prophet Muhammad the model of a companionate person. He treated everyone, friends and foe, man and woman, young and old, with kindness and respect. Even when the pagan Arabs reacted to the message of the Prophet with extreme hatred he showed love and kindness. The following examples from the life of the Prophet show us how we should react when faced with hatred. We can see one of the most patient and tolerant aspects of the Prophet’s character in the incident of an old woman who made a habit of throwing trash in the way of the Holy Prophet Muhammad whenever he passed by her house. The story related about this incident, mentions a neighbor of the Prophet that tried her best to irritate him by throwing garbage in his way every day. One day, when he walked out of his home there was no garbage. This made the Prophet inquire about the old woman and he came to know that she was sick. The Prophet went to visit her and offer any assistance she might need. The old woman was extremely humbled and at the same time ashamed of her actions in light

darkness and straightens the affairs of this world and hereafter, that Your displeasure and wrath may not descend upon me. For the sake of Your pleasure, I remain pleased and resigned to my fate. No change in this world occurs without Your Will.” As the Prophet picked the grapes he said: “Bismillahir Rahmaanir Rahim” (In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate). Adaas had never heard this before. He was impressed by it, because the Prophet was invoking mercy and compassion of Almighty in spite of all the hardship he was subjected to. “Who are you?” Adaas asked. Muhammad replied, “I am the Prophet of God. Where do you come from?” The servant said: “I am Adaas, a Christian. I come from Nainava.” “Nainava? You come from a place where my brother Yunus bin Mati (Jonah son of Mati) lived,” the Prophet said. Adaas was surprised to hear the name. “What do you know of Yunus? Here no one seems to know him. Even in Nainava there were hardly ten people who knew his father’s name.” The Prophet said: “Yes, I know him because just like me, he was a Prophet of Almighty God.” Adaas fell on his knees before the Prophet , kissed his hand and embraced him. It is further reported that after the Prophet took refuge from the stone throwing mob, Angel Jibrael came to the Prophet and asked him if he so wished Jibrael would give the command to bury the city between two mountains. Although the prophet had suf-

fered a great deal at the hands of these people, he replied that he did not wish destruction for the people of Taif because maybe their offspring would proclaim the religion of truth. 2 The Islamic scholar Imam Ghazali (1058 - 1111 C.E.) summarizes the information he collected in the hadith regarding our Prophet’s compassionate attitude to all those around him as follows: “He was far from knowing anger and quickly showed compassion for things. He was the most loving of men toward other people. He was the most auspicious of men and did the most good to others, and the most useful and beneficial to others.” 3 The Quran says that Prophet was sent asa mercy to humankind. If we are to honor the Prophet , it will be by adopting the sublime character of our Prophet and not through the emotions of anger and hate. References: 1. of the concern that the Prophet showed her. By seeing the example of compassion of Prophet Muhammad , she became convinced that Islam must be a true religion that the Prophet was preaching. 1 Another incident that is reported from the life of the Prophet is when the Prophet traveled to a neighboring town of Taif. In Taif he thought he might find people who might be respectable to the message of Almighty God. The people of Taif turned out to be as hateful as the people of Makkah. The elders of the town planned an organized campaign to ridicule the Prophet. To escalate their disapproval of the Prophet and prevent him from preaching Islam, they set a group of children and vagabonds behind him. They pestered him and threw stones at him. Tired, forsaken and wounded, he sought refuge in a nearby garden. It belonged to Atabah and Shaibah, two wealthy chiefs of Quraish. They were both there when Prophet Muhammad entered and sat under a distant tree. The Prophet raised his face towards heaven and prayed: “O Almighty! I raise unto you my complaint for my weakness, my helplessness, and for the ridicule to which I have been subjected. O Merciful! You are the Master of all oppressed people, You are my God! So to whom would You consign me? To the strangers who would ill-treat me, or to the enemies who have an upper hand over me? If whatever has befallen me is not because of Your wrath, then I fear not. No doubt, the field of Your security and care is wide enough for me. I seek refuge in Your light which illuminates

TLP’s rally against blasphemous caricatures on its way to Islamabad
Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) on Wednesday started its march from Lahore to Islamabad — a form of protest against Dutch Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders’ announcement to hold a competition of blasphemous caricatures — as its demand for the expulsion of the Netherlands’ ambassador to Pakistan from the country remained unfulfilled. After the party’s supporters gathered at Data Darbar, the TLP rally kicked off its journey reciting na`at and chanting religious slogans. The group has crossed Kala Shah Kaku on the G T Road and is closing in on Gujranwala.Upon its arrival in Kamoke — some 25km from Gujranwala — the Khadim Hussain Rizvi-led rally was given a welcome by
its supporters. Following the rally’s departure for Islamabad, Prime Minister Imran Khan formed a fourmember committee to resolve the matter. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Noorul Haq, the Punjab Law Minister Raja and Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry comprise the committee, which is scheduled to meet the TLP leaders tomorrow. “The committee will brief the TLP leaders on measures against blasphemous caricatures,” said Qadri.“The emotions of all Muslims against blasphemous caricatures is the same,” Chaudhry, the information minister added. “A joint front is imperative against blasphemy.”He added: “We are trying to devise a joint strategy so that this issue can be dealt with effectively. We desire a peaceful resolution of this matter by the way of negotiations.” The religiopolitical party, meanwhile, has announced that its workers would
“stay on the streets until either the publication of blasphemous cartoons in the Netherlands is stopped or the govt immediately ends diplomatic ties with the Dutch”.The blasphemous cartoon contest, scheduled for November, is being organised in the Netherlands by Wilders — a right-wing anti-Islam lawmaker who has been widely criticised for his activities. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has distanced his government from the controversial contest, clarifying that: “Wilders is not a member of the [Dutch] government. The competition is not a government initiative.” FM Qureshi discusses issue of ‘blasphemous caricatures’ with Dutch counterpart In a tweet on Wednesday, Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal said that FM Qureshi spoke with his Dutch counterpart to discuss the issue of “blasphemous caricatures”. “The FM expressed concern on the announcement of [the] abominable and sacrilegious competition by Geert Wilders,” read the tweet, adding that the Dutch FM made it clear that his government was neither associated nor supporting the event.

tension, not an easy task given the huge baggage of mutual distrust and certain adverse internal and external factors. The recent series of meetings between Kabul and Islamabad has taken the discussions forward with more concrete suggestions for evolving a common strategy to deal with cross-border sanctuaries that have been the biggest cause of tension between the two countries. Another foreign policy challenge for the new government would be to figure out how to normalise relations with New Delhi and manage business with Beijing. Imran Khan appears serious about improving relations with India, but Indian intransigence and the Kashmir issue remain a major hurdle to a breakthrough. Also given that India is having a general election next year, there is no hope of any major development on the Indian front. Meanwhile, the growing China-Pakistan axis reflects Asia’s emerging geopolitics and realignment of forces. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has brought a dimensional shift in the two countries’ relations at a time of significant geopolitical change. But while it promises wide-ranging benefits for infrastructure development and economic growth in Pakistan, a number of important challenges remain to be overcome if the project is to be sustainable and produce long-term benefits for Pakistanis. A major challenge for the new government is to negotiate better terms with the Chinese firms so as to reap maximum benefit from their investments. Given all the complexities, the new government needs to diversify its foreign policy options keeping in view Pakistan’s national interest. While internal political and economic stability must remain the top priority, it is also important to take charge of foreign policy too. By: Zahid Hussain. The writer is an author and journalist.

12 POLITICS Liberals Still Don’t Have a Plan to Handle Illegal Border Crossings: Rempel & Paul-Hus Dhul Hijjah 20,1439H August 31, 2018
OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Michelle Rempel, Conservative Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today issued the following statement in response to Minister Bill Blair’s mandate letter from Prime Minister Trudeau: “Nearly two months after the Prime Minister appointed Bill Blair to cabinet, we finally received some information about his job description, but unfortunately it’s clearly an exercise in public relations, not a plan of action. “The letter contains no formal commitment to renegotiate the Safe Third Country Agreement in such a way that would close the loophole that facilitates the Roxham Road crossing in Quebec. This is because Justin Trudeau has no intention of doing so.
“Conservatives have been calling on the Trudeau government to make concrete policy decisions to deal with the influx of border crossings for almost two years. In that time period, they have failed to broach the issues with the Americans, instead choosing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to facilitate the claims of those illegally crossing the border from safe spaces like upstate New York. “The Liberal government’s complete mismanagement of our immigration system means that the world’s most vulnerable who are waiting in refugee camps and newcomers to Canada waiting their turn to have their applications processed will have to wait longer. It is long past time for the Prime Minister to present Canadians with a plan to deal with his mess.
“Further, we still don’t have any clarity on who is lead on this issue. How can Minister Blair be expected to negotiate with the United States if the Liberals can’t even figure out which Minister is in charge of their intergovernmental task force? “Instead of presenting a fully costed, longterm plan to Canadians, Justin Trudeau has chosen to allow illegal border crossings to become a permanent stream of immigration. This is yet another example of an unbudgeted non-solution from this Liberal government. “This parliamentary session, Canada’s Conservatives will continue to hold the government to account and advocate for constructive policy solutions, such as the ones we announced last week. Our Pathway To Canada tour will allow us to hear directly from policy-makers and stakeholders on how best
to improve our immigration system. “Conservatives have a plan to refocus Canada’s immigration system on order, fairness and compassion. Justin Trudeau does not.”
BC Liberal friends fail in attempt to block people from voting in referendum The BC Liberals’ big money friends, The Independent Contractors and Businesses Association, failed in their attempt to block the upcoming referendum on electoral reform through the courts today. It’s clear though that Andrew Wilkinson and the BC Liberals don’t want British Columbians to have their say on whether we should scrap our outdated voting system and make it more fair. First they tried to attack the question on the referendum Wilkinson first claimed the referendum on how we vote is “undemocratic,” and tried to suggest the referendum would “confuse voters.” A letter from Chief Electoral Officer Anton Boegman rejected that claim, saying “I believe that this question is simple and clear enough for voters to understand. They are being offered a distinct choice between the existing voting system and a proportional representation voting system.” After that BC Liberal argument fell apart,
they supported their big money friends who tried, and failed, to block people through the courts from even voting at all When their friends, The Independent Contractors and Businesses Association, launched their failed court injunction “to halt” the referendum from even happening and to bring big money back into politics, BC Liberals quickly got in line to support the attempt to block people from having their say. BC Liberal MLA Mike Morris said it was “Great to see the constitutional challenges.” His colleague Dan Davies said “I’m glad this is being challenged,” and other BC Liberal MLAs such as Doug Clovechuk and Mike Bernier also showed support through social media. Andrew Wilkinson also hinted “There’s a possibility of challenges in the courts” when asked if the BC Liberals under his leadership would accept the results of the referendum. So why do Andrew Wilkinson and the BC Liberals want to stop people
from having a say on how we vote? Dianne Watts, who would be the BC Liberal leader if their own party had used the “first-pastthe-post” system, let everyone know the real reason when she said “If we do not defeat this referendum, there will be no majority. There will forever be a minority of BC Liberals.” That’s because with less than half of the votes in several elections, the BC Liberals managed to hold 100 per cent of the power for 16 years. They didn’t need to work with anyone, and people paid the price for it as life became less affordable, and important services, like health and education, were cut year after year. Andrew Wilkinson and the BC Liberals are
looking out for their own best interests. They don’t want you to have a say in how we vote, and they want to bring big money back into politics. “Today’s ruling put people’s interests over the interests of the BC Liberals and their big money friends,” said New Democrat MLA Ravi Kahlon. “It’s time for Andrew Wilkinson and his friends at the top to stop the shenanigans, and let the people decide on the future of voting in B.C.” Source: Media contact: Joanna Groves

Egypt’s Sunni authority: No excuse, all sexual harassment ‘forbidden’
The footage of the man parking his car and approaching a woman to go for a coffee went viral and drew wide-ranging reactions online Public debate over harassment intensified in the aftermath of the January 2011 uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak CAIRO: Egypt’s highest Sunni Muslim authority has said there can be no justification for sexual harassment, in a country where many people often blame women themselves for the widespread problems they face. In a statement Al-Azhar blasted all forms of harassment as “a forbidden act and deviant behavior” and said “the one who carries it out is a sinner.”“Criminalizing sexual harassment must be absolute and free from any condition or context,” the statement released Monday said.“Justifying sexual harassment with the behavior or clothing of the woman is a misunderstanding, for sexual harassment is an assault on the woman and her freedom and dignity,” it said. Some 60 percent of women in Egypt said
they had been victims of some form of sexual harassment during their lifetimes in a 2017 report from UN Women and Promundo. Three quarters of men and 84 percent of women polled said that women who “dress provocatively deserve to be harassed.” The divisions have been highlighted by a recent debate over a video posted on the Internet by an Egyptian woman showing a man making unwanted advances on her in a Cairo street. Hostile atmosphere The footage of the man parking his car and approaching a woman to go for a coffee went viral and drew wide-ranging reactions online. Some commentators said it definitely constituted harassment given the hostile atmosphere of the Cairo streets. But others described the approach as normal given the man made no obscene gestures, and there were even suggestions the woman was at fault as she was welcoming advances by standing in the street. Public debate over harassment intensified in
the aftermath of the January 2011 uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak. The protests demanding Mubarak’s ouster centered around Cairo’s Tahrir Square, where constant media coverage also highlighted sexual attacks and helped show public denial of the phenomenon. Following the 2011 uprising, anti-harassment graffiti spread around downtown Cairo, volunteers organized to rescue women from mob at-
tacks, and more women shared their own stories publicly. In February 2013, women took to the streets brandishing knives in a symbolic protest against sexual violence. Authorities directly criminalized sexual harassment in June 2014, days before President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s inauguration, however many women complain that officials still turn a blind eye to the problem. Makkah Imam Sheikh Saleh Al-Talib Arrested By Saudi Arabian Police Sheikh Saleh Al-Talib who is a famous Makkah Imam, as well as the Preacher of Masjid Al Haram (Grand Mosque), has been arrested by Saudi Arabian forces as per the reports of Social media group Prisoners of Conscience. After a lot of fuzz, an activist cleared the air by telling that Makkah Imam Sheikh Saleh Al-Talib was arrested after a talk on EVIL DOING. He was arrested after he criticized King Salman and all the things he did wrong. Al Talib tweeted our few tweets related to the topic of Hajj. Questions are spreading whether Al Talib made
this social media post himself. Since 2017, King Salman has initiated a long-term arrest campaign which has led the Saudi forces to arrest journalists, human rights activists, moderate clerics as well as people in a business. And these arrests has now reached Liberals and similar thinking people who are openly expressing how they think about different situations. Since Saudi Arabia never allows liberalism, so their security forces are making arrests whoever going against their law. Last week, An Islamic scholar
Sheikh Suleiman Dweesh lost the battle of his life in a Saudi Arabian jail after a long-term torture by security forces inside the jail. Islamic scholar Sheikh Suleiman Dweesh was arrested in April of 2016 after he openly shared his views which went against King Mohammad Bin Salman. And the same thing happened with famous Makkah Imam Sheikh Saleh Al-Talib, only the sources can confirm that he has been arrested and kept in jail. Source: https://theislamicinformation.com

ADB expands presence in Vanuatu
PORT VILA,29 AUGUST 2018 (ADB) – Asian Development Bank (ADB) Vice-President Stephen Groff joined the Prime Minister of Vanuatu Charlot Salwai in inaugurating ADB’s extended mission in Vanuatu. “ADB’s financing has helped Vanuatu achieve some real development results,” said Salwai. “The ADB Extended Mission will allow us to collectively better respond to the development needs of the people of Vanuatu.” In establishing the extended presence in Vanuatu, ADB is reaffirming their commitment to and deepening relationship with the country. It will better enable ADB to provide more effective support and responsiveness on the ground and maintain regular and close dia-
logue with the Government of Vanuatu, civil society, project beneficiaries, and other development partners. ADB’s extended mission for Vanuatu assists the government in implementing its development strategy, the National Sustainable Development Plan 2016–2030, while facilitating activities outlined in ADB’s Pacific Approach 2016–2020, which serves as the overall country partnership strategy for the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. The extended mission is led by Arto Ahonen. He is assisted by Senior country coordination officer Nancy Wells and other support staff. “In the past 37 years, ADB has provided Vanuatu with US$202.42 million to help the country achieve its development goals,” said Groff. “In the next two years, ADB is expected to scale up total financing for Vanuatu for a further US$88.50 million.”ADB began working with the Government of Vanuatu in 1981. ADB has since approved 16 loans totaling US$95.96 million, 14 grants worth US$83.41 million in total, and 69 technical assistance projects worth US$23.05 million. Source: fijitimes.com
President Vladimir Putin and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan have spearheaded an unlikely but so far sustained partnership to bring peace to Syria since late 2016 There is still a hope in Moscow to find an agreement with Ankara that could allow the Syrian regime to take control of Idlib without a new rupture with Turkey, says analyst ISTANBUL: Russia and Turkey are in intense negotiations to ensure the rebel-held province of Idlib does not become a breaking point in their alliance on Syria, but the long term fate of the area still risks provoking a rupture, analysts say. President Vladimir Putin and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan have spearheaded an unlikely but so far sustained partnership to bring peace to Syria since late 2016, despite being in theory on opposite sides of the civil war. The cooperation now faces its biggest test over Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib, bordering Turkey, which Syrian President Bashar Assad wants to recapture to complete a string of military successes. Idlib has over the last years become an increasingly densely populated region where problems in resolving the seven-year Syrian civil war were effectively dumped to be resolved at a later date. That moment is now drawing closer with
expectations of a government offensive and fears over the combustible mix in the province of displaced people from other Syrian regions, moderate rebels and Islamist radicals. Erdogan has been a champion of the antiAssad rebels and bitterly denounced Putin in the crisis that followed the shooting down of a Russian war plane by Turkey in November 2015. But the burgeoning alliance with Moscow, which also includes cooperation in trade, energy and defense, is now of critical importance to Ankara at a time when a crisis in relations with the US has caused the Turkish lira to bleed value. “There is still a hope in Moscow to find an agreement with Ankara that could allow the Syrian regime to take control of Idlib without a new rupture with Turkey,” Kerim Has, a Moscow-based analyst on TurkishRussian relations, told AFP. He said Moscow was carefully watching Turkey-US ties and could launch a full operation at the “moment when the Turkish leadership is in most desperate need of the Kremlin’s encouragement during a deepening Turkey-US crisis.”.....“Russia and Turkey are trying to find agreement with suitable terms for both sides,” Timur Akhmetov, Ankara-based researcher at the Russian International Affairs Council, told AFP...... When to Start Collecting Your Government Pension?
U
nderstanding what you’re enti- their rights, personal finance, and estate tled to at different ages can help planning. Here’s one on Canada Pension you sort out when you should Plan premiums and benefits: do what Q.: I’m 64 and will be turning 65 in A popular regular feature in Good June. I’m employed full-time and plan Times magazine is “Your Questions,” to continue working for at least a few where Olev Edur provides answers to more years. However, I read somewhere questions from our readers regarding that at 65, I should cancel my Canada
Pension Plan (CPP) premiums, which are currently paid through my employment. I have some RRSPs, but no other future sources of income. I would appreciate your advice and suggestions as to what I should do about CPP. I also wonder whether I should convert my RRSPs into a RRIF or TFSA at this point. I understand that I will have to do so anyway after I turn 71, but I’m wondering if it’s advisable to do so now. My gross income level is currently $50,000 annually. A.: The first question you have to ask yourself is: Do I need the extra income? If you’re comfortable enough with your work earnings, then you should probably defer your CPP benefits until you stop working. That’s because: a) if you start taking benefits now, they’ll be taxed at your top marginal rate (rather than a lower rate once you’ve quit working) and b) every month past age 65 that you forgo benefits and keep paying pre-
miums, your benefits will be increased by 0.7 per cent. So if, for example, you work for another three years, your benefits at that point will have increased by more than 25 per cent. This strategy is particularly advantageous since your employer would be paying half your CPP premiums, although the exact result would depend on your actual CPP entitlement, based on how long you have worked and how much you have earned since age 18 (with some allowance for your lowest-income years). The current maximum CPP retirement benefit is $1,134.17, or about $13,610 a year, but let’s assume you’ll be entitled to $10,000 a year at 65. If you work for another three years past your 65th birth month, you must pay 4.95 per cent of your income (less the first $3,500) in premiums, or about $2,300 a year; over three years, you’d pay $6,900. You’d also lose out on three years’ benefits, or $30,000 (we’ll disregard indexation for simplicity’s sake), so your total loss would be $36,900. But when you retire, you’ll be entitled to an extra $2,500 a year in benefits. The break-even point at which you will have recovered all your losses would be at about 14¾ years of benefits, meaning that by the time you’re nearing age 83, any further benefits would amount to free money. And that’s not counting the amount you’ll also save through lower taxes on the deferred income. Of course, if you pass on earlier, you’ll have left some money on the table. But assuming you’re in good health (as would seem to be the case since you’re still working full-time), and given that the average life expectancy of a 65-year-old Canadian male is now 83.8 (i.e., another 18.8 years), the odds are that by deferring your benefits you’ll gain money rather than lose, and the longer you live, the more you’ll gain. It should also be noted that you can now defer the receipt of Old Age Security (OAS) benefits until age 70 as well, and each month of deferral results in a 0.6 per cent increase in benefits, meaning that if you waited another three years, you’d be entitled to an extra 21.6 per cent—the current benefit for anyone who’s lived in Canada most of their lives is $7,025 annually, so this three-year deferral would net you an additional $1,517 a year. As for your RRSP, once you move the plan contents into a RRIF, you must start withdrawing a minimum amount every year, and this will be taxable on top of your work income, meaning that it could be taxed at a marginal rate of around 30 per cent (depending on province). So it’s probably better to leave the money in the RRSP where it can all compound untaxed until it’s needed. One notable exception to this advice is that once you’re 65, you can claim the pension income credit of up to $2,000 a year on RRIF withdrawals—so it makes sense to move perhaps $10,000 into a RRIF right away, so that you can avail yourself of that credit every year until you start making bigger withdrawals. Canada and Australia Announce Amendment to Youth Mobility Arrangement
Expanded age range will give young Canadians the opportunity to travel and work in Australia through the International Experience Canada program. August 29, 2018—Ottawa, ON The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and the Honourable Peter Dutton, Australia’s Minister for Home Affairs, today announced an agreement to expand the age range in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Canada and Australia concerning Youth Mobility. Through the amended MoU, Canadian and Australian young adults aged 18 to 35 will now be able
to work and travel through the International Experience Canada (IEC) program. Reflective of our strong people-to-people ties, Australia is a major source of foreign participants in IEC and Australia is consistently the top destination for Canadian youth through the program. Increasing the eligible age from 30 to 35 will provide for more opportunities for experienced professionals from both countries to gain valuable skills in a global work environment. The IEC program facilitates the process for young people to gain valuable international work experience and travel abroad. There are 34 destinations available to young Canadians
looking for international work experience with IEC’s partner countries and territories. Quote “I am pleased that we have agreed to amend this MoU with Australia and further strengthen the great relationship between our two countries. International travel and work allows our youth to immerse themselves in a different culture and develop life skills, all while improving their employability back home. This expanded age range will give more young adults from Canada and Australia the opportunity to broaden their perspective of the world and gain professional work experience while traveling.”
August 20, 2018 – Surrey, BC – To help reunite even more parents and grandparents with their families in Canada, today, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that the Government of Canada will accept up to 20 000 applications for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents, in 2019. This is 4 times the number of applications accepted when the program reopened in 2014, when the cap was set at 5000 applications. This decision to increase the number of applications that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will accept for processing is a result of continually high demand in the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program and the fact that we have significantly reduced the inventory of applications. The inventory has dropped from a peak of 167 000 people, in 2011, to just under 26 000 people, in June 2018. After increasing the 2018 cap to 17 000
complete applications, IRCC sent a second round of invitations to randomly selected potential sponsors who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in early 2018. Those invited to the second round have until October 5, 2018, to submit a complete application. Minister Hussen also announced that, as a result of listening to stakeholders and closely examining the PGP Program, the government is making further changes to the application intake process that will streamline access to the program and improve client experience. Using this modified intake process will give the government more flexibility in the application process, ensuring that we receive as many applications as possible. In 2019, as in previous years, the Interest to Sponsor form will be available online, at the beginning of the year, so eligible potential sponsors can let IRCC know they wish to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada. However, instead of ran-
domly selecting the sponsors to apply, we will invite them to submit an application to sponsor their parents and grandparents based on the order in which we receive their Interest to Sponsor forms. This process will continue until we reach the 2019 cap of 20 000 complete applications. Further details of these improvements to the system will be announced this fall. Quote “Over the last few years, we have made substantial improvements to the parents and grandparents sponsorship process and eliminated the backlog of applications. Confidence!
By: Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor
the confidence of people around you, it’s well-worth the effort! Self-confidence is about balance. At one extreme, we have people with low self-confidence. At the other end, we have people who may be over-confident. If you are under-confident, you’ll avoid taking risks and stretching yourself and you might not try at all. And if you’re over-confident, you may take on too much risk, stretch yourself beyond your capabilities, and crash badly. You may also find that you’re so optimistic that you don’t try hard enough to truly succeed. Getting this right is a matter of having the right amount of confidence, founded in reality and on your true ability!!
elf-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet so many people struggle to find it. Sadly, this can be a vicious circle: people who lack self-confidence can find it difficult to become successful! After all, most people are reluctant to slow down at a project that’s being instructed by someone who is nervous and lacks confidence. On the other hand, you might be persuaded by someone who speaks clearly, who holds his or her head high, who answers questions assuredly, and who readily admits when he or she does not know something. Confident people inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. And gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a self-confident person finds success. The good news is that self-confidence really can be learned and built on. We become too busy to build the nest that we forget to use our wings to fly. People say there is no “sorry” or “thanks” in a relationship but experience tells us that most of the time these two words are very essential to a relationship.

By: Asma Shums, Mortgage Broker he children comes running to parents , home eager to tell about their achievements. They share everything , good or bad , with them or around them with parents. We are very happy and feel proud when they bring trophy or a prize. We smile and encourage them. They grow little , they come home , as usual share the news that we all bunked the class and went for a movie or worse some bad habit thing they tried, kabhoom #*#<#> We expload oh my god ...how can you being my son / daughter Worse the mistake ,worse the reaction....so what message we convey the message that they have done some heineous crime.
Are we wrong?
No and Yes , yes and no. Of course no parents will or should encourage wrong thoughts or behaviour. The parents choice of words, manner and way of handling such situation makes a lot of difference. In actual sense the parents want to say that so and so action was bad but the way. The manner in which they scold makes the child feel that he or she is bad.
What’s up
and truly not good. What do we do is instead of listening we became judgemental. We attack the child and not their actions. This results in the child not sharing and they take their rejection personally and shut themselves from parents. When other children come to us with same mistakes committed, what do we say? Yeah, it happens in this age and time, it happens, no worries, take care, etc. We do not react dramatically.
How could you?
This difference in reaction makes friends parents look “cool parents” in the eyes of children. Counsellors vs Parents People open up more, share more about their feelings or thought to counsellors or friends and more then family because they are afraid to share or to even strangers to get rejection, ridicule and shame from family. When somebody comes to us with sin what do we do? We try to show them that they are not but the action they did is bad, we try to help them to be emotionally strong and give them a helping hand to come out from their place. This is exactly what we as parents should have in the first place when our child was growing and told us honestly about the mistakes. So lets give them a helping hand by not becoming so judgemental, critics or aggressive. Instead let us show love, support, and guidance. To be continued...
What’s happening and the results to it are opposite, now the parents run behind children, go around them to ask what is happening, hardly getting any answers or details. What, where, why and how The child who was sharing everything in detail has suddenly closed the doors to parents. Same child, same parents, then what has changed? First when they got some good news about some achievements we smiled, appreciated. Every soul craves for approval, acceptance and understanding. As soon as they do something which is bad in their eyes Info:asmashums@gmail.com

PCB election set for September 4 Former ICC president Ehsan Mani steps closer to being formally elected PCB chairman, after the election commissioner called a special meeting of the Board of Governors (BoG) on September 4 in Lahore. A majority of six out of 10 voting members of the BoG would be required to elect the chairman, but given Mani was appointed to the post last week by the prime minister of Pakistan, he is more than likely to be elected unanimously. Imran Khan, the former Pakistan captain, was elected the country’s prime minister this month and appointed Mani to the post hours after Najam Sethi resigned from it on August 21. Mani staying in the post was dependent on an election process, but that remains a formality. The prime minister is the patron of the board, and, as per its constitution, can change the PCB chairman if he so desires. Sethi is known to have a poor relationship with Imran Khan, meaning his position became untenable. A newly elected chairman will have a three-year term starting from the day he is elected. Apart from Mani, the prime minister had also put Asad Ali Khan on the BoG, as his second direct nominee, replacing
the previous patron’s second nominee Arif Ejaz, who’d also resigned from the role. In all, only nine members of the BoG will be voting on September 4 since one seat is currently vacant. Mani and Asad Ali Khan aside, the BoG includes four representatives of regional associations - FATA, Lahore, Quetta and Sialkot (currently vacant due to an adhoc cricket administration in the region) - and four representatives of services organisations - WAPDA, SSGC, HBL and KRL, who replaced the nowdefunct UBL. An official from an interprovincial government body acts as an exofficio, non-voting 11th member. The chairman shall be eligible for re-election for one further term of three years, provided that the total tenure of the person as chairman does not in any case exceed six years. Source: Cricinfo
