Point of Privilege statement made by MLA Jagrup Brar “ Last week, I reserved my right on a point of privilege, and today I rise to speak about it. We are blessed to live in the most beautiful province, home to the most diverse community — the province built by the people who came before us on the fundamental values of equality, justice and fairness for all British Columbians. These principles are fundamental to Canadian society. We believe in treating people equally, regardless of race or place of origin. This is the people’s House, this beautiful House, and it is our job as the representatives of the people to lift people up, not put them down. On May 16, the member for Rich-
mond-Queensborough told the Minister of Citizens’ Services: “she is an MLA for Surrey-Panorama, not Islamabad North.” The member also claimed some of these individuals were on security watch lists. This allegation was repeated outside of the House by other B.C. Liberal MLAs, including the Opposition House Leader, who took it even further by saying these people were “on the U.S. terror watch list.” The Pakistani community is very upset and offended as a result of the comments made by B.C. Liberals inside this House and outside this House. The Pakistan Canada Association said that they were disappointed by these comments because they “feed into a troubling Islamophobia narrative.” The Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association said that the comments “have outraged and offended the Pakistani community.” They note that “his fellow Liberal MLAs clapped to show support for his inappropriate statements.” The Pakistani community has made extraordinary contributions to this province, and they deserve respect from all members of this House. Therefore, the member for

Spirit of Ramadan By: Mehboob Hajee I Iusually go to break my fast at a masjid not far from where I live. My wife works at night cleaning buildings, so she made one humble request: to bring her some food so that she could also break her fast. Sounds reasonable, correct? After I finish eating, I usually grab an extra paper plate to put something for my wife and carry it out to my car. A few days ago, this one gentleman approaches me as I am putting a few morsels on a plate to tell me that he has been observing me take food out, and really berated me for doing so. I patiently explained to him that my wife works late and I was merely taking some food for her. He really said a few things. I mentioned to him to mind his own business, but he just kept on. Next day, I related the matter to the Imam, and he must have had a
word with him, as, the next day he changed his tune.(“ Why don’t you also take some of ...... for her?”) I thought that was it, so I continued to take food for my wife, as usual, with the full permission from the Imam. Yesterday, another man decided to be “too good” and derided me for the same act. He even went further to grab my plate from my hands, and dump all the food back into the respective containers. I could not talk to the Imam at that time, as he was busy in Nafl prayers. Is this the spirit the Muslims display at such occaissions? Shame on them! These are the kinds of people that give Islam a bad name.

Pakistan wants OIC to probe human rights violations in IHK
Pakistan on Thursday called upon the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to send its fact-finding mission to Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) to investigate the gross human rights violations. Addressing at the meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir in Jeddah, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi called for an inquiry by the OIC’s Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) to look into continuous incidents of extrajudicial killings, detentions and rape by Indian security forces in IHK. Qureshi’s demand came as he mentioned an earlier report by the United Nations’ Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) that called for formation of a “commission of inquiry” to objectively analyse the ongoing abuses in IHK and to fix responsibility. Qureshi, who is in Saudi Arabia to participate in the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting, said “We expect the OIC Contact Group to unequivocally reaffirm its abiding support for Kashmiris and their struggle for self-determination.” Meanwhile, Qureshi told journalists that no meeting had been fixed between Prime Minister Imran Khan and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. However, he said Imran Khan had not turned down the possibility of a meeting. He said that there existed a strong need for Indian leadership to be like Manmohan Singh, and added that Pakistan had always

Eid is on June 5, even if Ruet-e-Hilal Committee disagrees’
Federal Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry has said that even if the Ruet-e-Hilal committee doesn’t agree, Pakistan will be celebrating Eid on June 5. “It’s the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s choice if they want to follow Pakistan’s first official moonsighting application or not. But Eid has been announced and will be celebrated on June 5,” Chaudhry said on SAMAA TV’s programme Naya Din on Friday. He remarked that it’s not his job to get the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to celebrate Eid on the same day.“You can’t
force anyone to celebrate Eid on a specific day. You can only guide them about what is good and right,” he said. The minister added that the calendar and the application his ministry had developed were not part of the agenda during the cabinet meeting on Thursday.“Since we submitted the idea a little late and to be a part of the cabinet meeting you need 160 copies of the calendar and have to go through a distribution procedure, my calendar wasn’t part of the discussion formally,” explained Chaudhry. He said they are
waiting for the Council of Islamic Ideology for their input before getting it approved. Following the launch of Pakistan’s first official moon sighting website, Chaudhry announced on Thursday the availability of a mobile application that displays the various phases of and other real-time information about the moon. The app, called ‘The Ruet’, is available on the Google Play Store. Source : SAMAA tv English
Senate approves resolution against Judges’ references The Senate on Friday passed a resolution condemning the government’s decision to file reference against the judges before the Supreme Judicial Council.“While supporting across the board accountability, the Senate feels that these targeted references are malafied and politically motivated. They are a direct attack on the independence of Judiciary and are aimed at stifling the voices of reason, truth and justice in the highest judiciary. The Senate expresses its full solidarity with the judiciary, lawyers elected representation and Bar Councils of the country and we are with them in this struggle,” read the
resolution. A resolution was also tabled by opposition members in the National Assembly expressing grave concern over the filing of the references: “This House expresses grave concern over the filing of references in the Supreme Judicial Council by the government against some Honourable Judges of the Supreme and High Courts in secretive manner without even the knowledge of the concerned Judges.” The filing of references has provoked serious criticism, caused a split in the Bar and the resignation of Additional Attorney General. There is a lingering suspicion that the arbitrary and suspicious man-
ner of filing references before the Supreme Judicial Council linked to recent verdicts by the Honourable Judges. These references are a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary and are aimed at stifling the voices of reason, truth and justice in the judiciary. This House expresses solidarity with the Honourable Judges under siege, lawyers elected representation and Bars Council of the Country. This House calls upon the government to withdraw the references against the Honourable Judges,” the resolution filed by the opposition read. Web desk

Trump to hit Mexico with tariffs in anti-immigration measure
US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs on all goods coming from Mexico, demanding the country curb illegal immigration into the US. In a tweet, Mr Trump said that from 10 June a 5% tariff would be imposed and would slowly rise “until the illegal immigration problem is remedied”. Jesús Seade, Mexico’s top diplomat for North America, said the proposed tariffs would be “disastrous”. Mr Trump declared a national emergency at the US-Mexico border in February. He said it was necessary in order to tackle what he claimed was a crisis at the US southern border. Border agents say they are overwhelmed, but critics say they are mis-
handling and mistreating migrants. The US president has long accused Mexico of not doing enough to stem the flow of people, and this is his latest attempt to put pressure on the neighbouring state. Mr Seade said Mexico “must respond vigorously” if the tariffs - a tax on products made abroad - were brought in. However, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador responded by saying he did not want “confrontation”. “I propose deepening our dialogue, to look for other alternatives to the migration problem,” he wrote in a letter on Thursday. During his election campaign and throughout his time in office, President Trump has sought funds to build a wall on the US-Mexico border. He declared the national emergency at the border in an attempt to divert federal funds for a barrier wall, but a judge blocked his efforts in May.The White House said on Thursday that the president would use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to implement the new tariffs on Mexico. The announcement came the same day that the White House told Congress it planned to pursue a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada. Source :BBC news
Iran accuses Saudi Arabia of ‘sowing division’
Tehran accused Riyadh on Friday of “sowing division” in the region to Israel’s advantage, after the kingdom hosted summits of Gulf and Arab leaders to rally support against the Islamic republic. Saudi Arabia has “continued to sow division between Islamic countries and in the region, which is the wish of the Zionist regime”, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said. “We see the attempts by Saudi Arabia to rally neighbouring and Arab countries against Iran as the continuation of futile attempts by America and the Zionist regime,” he added. Mousavi expressed disappointment that Riyadh intended to level the same “baseless allegations” against Tehran at a summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Makkah early on Saturday, “exploiting” its role as host. Saudi Arabia’s King Salman on Friday ratcheted up the rhetoric against arch-rival Iran, calling on Arab states to confront its “criminal” actions after attacks on oil installations sparked fears of a regional conflagration. The king’s remarks came at the start of two back-to-back emergency sum-
mits in Makkah in the early hours, which drew near-unanimous support for the Sunni kingdom from Gulf and Arab states — with the notable exception of Iraq. The summits came after hawkish US National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Wednesday that Iran was “almost certainly” behind May 12 attacks on four ships, two of them Saudi oil tankers, off the United Arab Emirates. Tehran dismissed the accusation as “laughable” and accused Bolton of pursuing “evil desires for chaos in the region”. Source :The Dawn
tion for US measures. Hong Kong - Vitasoy has been producing its popular malted soymilk in its home base of Hong Kong, as well as Shanghai and Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland, since the 1940s. But the trade war between the United States and China has forced it to make some radical changes to how it sources its most important raw material: soya beans. And as China’s latest retaliatory tariffs against goods from the US come into effect from Saturday, more companies could find themselves in a similar situation. Soya beans have become a particularly contentious issue between China and the US. The US exported about $14.2bn worth of soya beans to China in 2016, according to the US Census Bureau. Yet that number had dropped to less than $3.2bn by 2018, when the first wave of tit-for-tat tariffs hit. And according to a report by Bloomberg this week, China - the world’s biggest consumer of the commodity - has now put all purchases of US soya beans on hold. The outbreak of African swine fever in China has also put a dampener on demand there. Soya beans are grown in many of the states where US President Donald Trump derives much of his support, potentially giving Bei-
jing an economic weapon with which to defend itself.Companies like Vitasoy and other soy importers are now looking to source their soya beans elsewhere, resulting in an oversupply of the crop in the US - and in global prices dropping sharply.“Vitasoy has been adopting [an] agile procurement strategy to diversify the source of raw materials geographically,” Stella Lung, a senior public relations manager for Vitasoy International, told Al Jazeera. “Currently, both Hong Kong and mainland China businesses haven’t purchased any soybeans from the US,” Lung added. The impact of the trade war on soya beans - and the companies that deal with them - are but one front in a growing dispute between the world’s two largest economies. Many other industries, commodities and entire economies are being affected. Source :aljazeera.com
Hitting back: More pain for firms Philippines announces June 5 as public as China’s new tariffs kick in Chinese tariffs of up to 25 percent on $60bn holiday on Eid Al-Fitr in US imported goods take effect in retaliaPhilippine President Rodrigo Duterte has declared June 5 a public holiday in observance of Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. Although the Philippines is a largely Catholic country, a proclamation signed by Duterte stated: “The entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid Al-Fitr.”It said the aim of the decision is “to bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid Al-Fitr to the fore of national consciousness.” Meanwhile, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) announced that a shipment of donated dates from Saudi Arabia had arrived at its central office. A meeting was held to determine the method of distribution, and NCMF Secretary Saidamen Pangarungan gave instructions on how to divide the 1,250 boxes of dates among various regions and provinces. Each box contains 10 packs of dates. A ceremonial handover of the 60 metric tons of pressed dates, as a gift to the Philippine government and people, was held at the Saudi Embassy in Makati City last Monday. The Saudi ambassador to the Phil-
ippines, Dr. Abdullah Al-Bussairy, handed over the dates to NCMF representatives and the Department of Foreign Affairs. Representatives from the Saudi Finance Ministry and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) witnessed the handover. Last year, Saudi Arabia donated the same amount of dates to the Philippine government and Red Cross as a “humanitarian gesture” to the Filipino people. Saudi officials said the dates are an affirmation of the depth of bilateral relations. Source: Arab news
Trucking and the Indians hoping to cross the US-Mexico border In the latest of its Untold America series, AJ+ hops in the cab of an 18-wheeler belonging to Satnam Singh, a Punjabi Sikh immigrant, who came to the US 40 years ago. San Francisco, California - For decades, Indian nationals have been making long journeys to reach the US-Mexico border. In some detention facilities in California, up to 40 percent of the people being held are reportedly from India, according to government data from last year. Immigrants and asylum seekers from India travel more than 9,000 miles (14,484km) with paid “agents” who guide them on a route that snakes through multiple countries before reaching Mexico. In the first four months of 2018, there were 4,197 Indian nationals arrested by US Customs and Border Patrol. Some asylum seekers have told us they fled political and religious persecution in India. Satnam Singh, a Punjabi Sikh immigrant, made the journey in 1979. He

FAITH Hadith No: 57 From: Imam Malik’s Muwatta. Chapter 17, Zakat Narrated/Authority of Yahya related to me that Malik had seen that the people of knowledge used to like to pay the zakat al-fitr after dawn had broken on the day of the Fitr before they went to the place of prayer. Malik said, “There is leeway in this, if Allah wills, in that it can be paid either before setting out (for the prayer) on the day of Fitr or afterwards.”
T
End of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr
he end of Ramadan is marked by all Muslims going to Morning Prayer services and then the Islamic Holiday Eid Al-Fitr begins. The Night Preceding Eid Al-Fitr The night before Eid al-Fitr is regarded as a very blessed night and Muslims believe that it should be spent in nafl (voluntary) salat (prayers) and worship. There will be no taraweeh prayers on this last night of Ramadan, but a devout Muslim will spend the night in prayer, remembrance of Allah and reading the Quran. Before the Eid al-Fitr salat, Mulsims will be sure to pay the “Sadakah Al-Fitr.” This is money due to the poor and the needy. Every Muslim must pay this, even the poor. Sadakah al-Fitr is a fairly small amount of money equal to 1.75 kilograms of wheat for every person in the family. On this topic, Ibn ‘Umar said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, made zakat al-Fitr obligatory for the Muslims - slave and free, male and female, young and old, being a sa’ of dates or a sa’ of barley. He commanded that it be paid before people went out to the prayer.” (Muwatta, Book 17, 52) Preparing to go to Eid Al Fitr Salat The morning of Eid al-Fitr, it is considered sunnah (consistent with the ways of the prophet) to perform certain acts in preparation of thanking Allah for a blessed Ramadan. These acts include: •Wake up early in the morning and take a bath. •Brush the teeth with a Miswak or a toothbrush. •Wear the best available clothes.
•Wear perfume (men only.) •Eat a few dates before the Eid prayer. •Recite the following Takbir in the low voice while going to the ‘Eid prayer: “Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La Ilaha Ila Allah Wa Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wa Lillahi Alhamd.” Eid Al-Fitr Salat (Prayers) In Islam, the Eid prayers should be performed in an open field or area if possible. It is not recommended to conduct Eid prayers in every single mosque. It is said to be a time for Muslims to celebrate Eid together in large gatherings. If a large field or park is not available, then a large mosque will suffice. The Eid prayer is mandatory for every male Muslim. Muslim women must attend Eid prayers if there are no emergency situations in the home, such as issues involving small children or sick and elderly parents that require assistance or tending. The Eid prayer should be attended and prior to the prayer takbir should be recited:”Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La Ilaha Ila Allah Wa Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wa Lillahi Alhamd.” When not reciting the takbir (above), saying zikr (remembrance of Allah) is recommended. No nafl salat (voluntary prayers)
are recited in the home prior to or after the salat; Muslims may recite nafl salat in the home after returning from the Eid prayers. The Eid prayer is distinct from other Muslim prayers. The Imam will lead the salat (prayers) and there will be six sets of takbirs (Allah Akbar). Three of the takbirs will be in the beginning of the salat. After each takbir, the hands are raised to the ears. At the beginning of the second rakat, after the Imam or sheik recites the Fatiha and something from the Quran, an additional three takbirs are recited. Some mosques will do all six takbirs at once at the beginning of the salat and then proceed with the prayer. The Eid Prayer Khutbah (Sermon) The Khutbah itself is regarded as an inspirational event and it involves praising Allah. Muslims should listen intensely and reverently to what the Imam has to say. It is regarded as a time to remember Allah’s blessings and to be thankful to be present in such an assembly. Muslims should not leave the Eid prayer early hoping to avoid the crowds; they should stay until after the final dua is said; then, it’s customary to greet everyone in the room with a congratulations or “Ramadan Mubarak.” Eid Al-Fitr Celebrations Begin at the End of Ramadan Islamic holidays and celebrations are unlike Christian or Jew celebrations. In a nonIslamic situation, there may be partying, dancing, music and singing – this is not so in a Muslim community. Muslims will visit friends and relatives, drink Arabic coffee, chat, hug each other, and then praise Allah for His bounty at the end of Ramadan. It is normal for Muslim families to make the rounds, visiting each home for a brief period
of time. It is considered inappropriate to refuse Arabic coffee when offered. Wishing a blessed Eid Ul Fitr to the whole Islamic Ummah. Congratulating One Another People may exchange congratulations and good greetings on Eid, no matter what form the words take. For example they may say to one another, “Taqabbal Allaahu minnaa wa minkum (May Allaah accept [the fast and worship] from us and from you” or “Eid mubarak’ ‘ and other similar permissible greetings. Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: “At the time of the Prophet (££), when people met one another on the day of Eid , they would say, ‘Taqabbal Allaahu minnaa wa minka (May Allaah accept from us and from you).’ “ (Ibn Hajar. Its isnaad is hasan. Fath, 2/446) The practice of exchanging greetings was well-known at the time of the Sahaabah and scholars such as Imaam Ahmad and others allowed it. There are reports which indicate that it is permissible to congratulate people on special occasions. The Sahaabah used to congratulate one another when something good happened, such as when Allaah accepted a person’s repentance and so on. There is no doubt that congratulating others in this way is one of the noblest kinds of good manners and one of the highest social qualities among Muslims. At the very least, one can return Eid greetings when they are given to you, and remain silent if nothing is said, as Imaam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “If someone congratulates me, I return the greeting, but I do not initiate it.’ ‘

Well-known former imam wins Lib- Alberta government targets Horgan, high eral nomination in Montreal riding gas prices in new pro-pipeline ad campaign A former imam who gained international attention for speaking at a funeral for victims of the Quebec City mosque shooting has won the Liberal nomination in the Montreal riding of Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel, the first time the party has nominated a nonItalian in the Liberal stronghold. Hassan Guillet said the Liberals were reluctant to have him run in Saint-Léonard, afraid of antagonizing the large Italian community. But he pushed ahead, and insists that he represents the community “better than everybody else,” pointing out that the riding is increasingly diverse and is now home to sizeable North African and Haitian populations as well. “The Muslim community is as big as the Italian community,” Guillet told the Post in an interview. “The demographic changed enormously.”Guillet claims to speak six languages, including Italian, and said he was the only potential candidate who could speak to the majority of the riding’s constituents in their mother tongue, whether it be French, English, Italian or Arabic. His nomination ahead of the fall federal election marks a dra-
matic shift in the Montreal riding, which has been represented by members of the Italian community since its creation in 1988. The seat was held until 2002 by Alfonso Gagliano, a central figure in the Quebec sponsorship scandal, followed by Massimo Pacetti, who was expelled from the Liberal caucus in 2015 over accusations of sexual misconduct. The riding went to Nicola Di Iorio in the last federal election, who announced his resignation in April 2018 but didn’t officially resign until the end of January 2019. Source: The National Post
B.C. Wildfire Service sets up special camp as northwest fire risk soars
The province of Alberta is hoping to sway British Columbians with a $1.1 million ad campaign supporting the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. More than 30 billboards are going up around the Lower Mainland, as well as newspaper, radio and social media ads alluding to high gas prices and targeting Premier John Horgan. Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage, who travelled to Vancouver to promote the campaign, said it will run until June 18 when the federal government is expected to deliver its decision regarding the future of the pipeline..” You’re paying the highest cost of gasoline in North America here in B.C. and there’s a direct link to the Trans Mountain Pipeline. We’ll give you much needed relief at the pump. So, we’re really going to focus on that message,” Savage said. On Thursday afternoon, the price
of gas in Edmonton and Calgary hovered at about $1.05 a litre, while around Vancouver it checked in as high as $1.65. But passersby didn’t seem too impressed with the first billboard. One, Clinton Johnson, said Canadians ought to be moving away from the oil industry and looking to greener technology. “I think it’s a dying industry,” Johnson said. “I don’t really think this [campaign] helps relations between B.C. and Alberta. I mean it’s not a B.C. versus Alberta thing. I think it should be considered a bigger global issue.” The campaign, which the Alberta government is calling “Yes to TMX” comes just days after the unanimous decision by the B.C. Court of Appeal denying the B.C. government’s attempt to restrict or prohibit the flow of bitumen through the Trans Mountain pipeline. Source:cbc.ca
A B.C. mayor is pushing back against criticism that the city’s proposed bylaw amendments will target homeless people. In a decision on May 21, Penticton’s city council passed first, second and third readings of amendments to their Good Neighbour bylaw that would stop people from sitting or lying down on some city sidewalks. The amendments apply to sections of three streets, which the city says make up about 17 per cent of the downtown core. The amendments would also stop people from gathering outside vacant stores, and would be in effect every year between May and the end of September. Violators could face a potential $100 fine. The final amendments will be voted on by council on June 4. In a statement posted to the city’s website Thursday, Mayor John Vassilaki defended the potential additions to the bylaw. “Downtown residents and businesses are tired of the bad behaviour and brazen crime they are witnessing and they’re demanding more solutions,” he said in the statement. Vassilaki acknowledged he had heard from citizens in the week since the amendments who suggested the bylaw would target homeless people, but denied that bylaw officers would indiscriminately ticket them. “Since our last Council meeting, concerned residents have said the proposed amendments will impact those without a home. That’s possible,” he wrote. “If someone who is homeless is obstructing passage along one of three designated sections of downtown high-traffic sidewalks…they will likely be approached by Bylaw Officers and be asked to move.”
But the move has faced intense criticism from local homeless advocates. Kristine Shepherd, who has run a Monday night meal program in downtown Penticton for several years, called the amendments “discriminatory.” “It’s a bylaw to target one group of people,” she told CTV News Vancouver. “They’re specifically targeting the homeless, people with mental illness and people who suffer from addiction.” Shepherd says her meal program has faced harassment from residents in the days since the bylaw amendments were discussed. In one case, she says, someone drove by and swore at people having a meal. She says the amendments are a result of inaction from city council for years. Shepherd argues that council let the situation deteriorate to a point where citizens started complaining. “They’ve got their heads in the sand. They could’ve taken care of these issues a long time ago. The previous council could’ve dealt with it,” she said. Instead of the proposed bylaw amendments, she calls for a more comprehensive response to homelessness in the Okanagan city. “We should have safe consumption sites, we should have needle buyback programs, we should have better access to rehab,” she said. “But we have none of these things.” It’s not the first time a bylaw has targeted people sleeping on the street in the Okanagan. The City of Kelowna made it illegal to sleep or lie down on sidewalks 24-7 in 2016, after first banning it during daytime hours. Source: ctvnews.ca

SMITHERS, B.C. - Wildfire crews are arriving in northwestern British Columbia as drought grips the region and the fire danger soars along with the temperature. The B.C. Wildfire Service is setting up a 150-person camp in the Dease Lake area, not in response to any specific blaze, but because the service expects potential new wildfire activity with the parched conditions. A statement from the service says the camp will house firefighters ready to respond to any incident, while a team that specializes in overseeing wildfire management, has also been sent to Dease Lake. The fire danger rating is listed as high to extreme across most
of the Northwest and Prince George fire centres, while large sections of the Coastal Fire Centre are also rated at a high risk for a blaze. Wildfire service maps show the most drought-stricken area is in the extreme northwestern corner of the province, covered by the Cassiar fire zone, where a campfire ban and other open burning bans are already in effect. Three new wildfires were sparked in that zone this week and crews also continue to work on two blazes that burned intensely last year and smouldered underground through the winter before resurfacing as hot spots in the spring.Source: The National Post
This is what the Alberta wildfires look like from space
Satellite imagery from outer space shows the powerful day-by-day spread of the raging wildfires in northern Alberta. The images from NASA Worldview show plumes of smoke stretching almost the entire length of Alberta and spreading across the border into Saskatchewan.
The images show the vast range of the fires. The largest blaze, which is raging near High Level, Alta., spread to over 2,300 square kilometres on Thursday, growing more than 800 square kilometres from the day before. Source: ctvnews.ca

Iran, Syria on agenda as Mike Pompeo meets Germany’s Merkel
German chancellor says brief talks with the US Secretary of State has Iran, Afghanistan, Syria and Libya on the agenda.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has held 45-minute talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, discussing “plenty of issues” including Iran, Afghanistan, Syria and Libya.Pompeo, who is on a five-day tour of Europe, arrived in Germany on Friday on his way to Switzerland, the Netherlands and before joining US President Donald Trump in the United Kingdom. Speaking at a news conference before the talks with Merkel, Pompeo sought to paper over differences with Germany in the face of
a deepening rift with one of its major NATO allies. ”Germany is a great, important partner and ally of the United States, that’s why I am so happy to have this time today with Chancellor Merkel,” he said. “There is important work for our two countries to do alongside our NATO partners and alongside all of our allies to achieve security for our own people, and stability and peace in as much of the world as we possibly can.”Merkel said the two countries would “discuss plenty of issues, because the world is in great unrest”. “First of all, the question of Iran and how do we prevent Iran coming into possession of nuclear weapons and also how we prevent further aggressive actions by Iran,” she said.
“We will talk about Afghanistan, where we both have stationed a significant number of troops on the ground. We will talk about the situation in Syria and also the very fragile situation in Libya.” Al Jazeera’s Dominic Kane, reporting from Berlin, said high on Pompeo’s agenda was “to kill” a new trade framework that Europe’s leaders are planning to set up to circumvent US sanctions on Iran.Washington says it will sanction anyone involved if the system created by France, Britain and Germany - Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) goes into effect. “Quite clearly, the Americans would like to kill INSTEX, but the Europeans are committed to the nuclear deal with Iran and they
see it as their way of trying to keep Iran inside the deal for as long as possible,” he said. “The issue brought a big pressure on the ties of Germany and the US.” S: aljazeera.com
The deal was announced after US National Security Adviser John Bolton visited the UAE amid increasing regional tensions. The United States and the United Arab Emirates announced on Wednesday that a mutual defence cooperation agreement had come into force, amid increasing tensions between Washington and Tehran. “The DCA [Defense Cooperation Agreement] will enhance military coordination between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, further advancing an al-
ready robust military, political, and economic partnership at a critical time,” a joint statement said. “The United States and the United Arab Emirates share a deep interest in promoting prosperity and stability in the region. “The DCA will advance that interest by fostering closer collaboration on defence and security matters and supporting efforts by both nations to maintain security in the Gulf region.” US national security adviser John Bolton was in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday,
meeting his Emirati counterpart, Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Bolton said Iran was almost certainly behind recent oil tanker attacks that sent Gulf tensions soaring. Riyadh’s regional rival Tehran dismissed the accusation as “laughable”. This came on the eve of emergency Arab and Gulf summits called by Saudi Arabia to discuss the standoff and ways to isolate Tehran. Source: aljazeera.com

All you need to know about the OIC
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is the second largest intergovernmental body after the UN. Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud will host the 14th summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Friday in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The meeting is expected to address “current issues in the Muslim world” and “recent developments in a number of OIC member states”, according to the official agenda. Topping the summit discussions will be regional security issues amid soaring tension between Iran and the United States and its Gulf allies.. What is the OIC? The OIC’s mission statement bills it as “the collective voice of the Muslim world” that works to “protect the interests of the Muslim world”. It was established by 24 member states in 1969. Today, with 57 member states from four continents, the OIC is the second-largest intergovernmental organisation in the world after the United Nations, with a collective population reaching over 1.8 billion. The majority of its member states are Muslim-majority countries, while others have significant Muslim populations, including several African and South American countries. While the 22 members of the Arab League are also part of the OIC, the organisation has several significant non-Arab member states, including Turkey, Iran and Pakistan.
It also has five observer members, including Russia and Thailand. The organisation has permanent delegations to the UN and the European Union and its official languages are Arabic, English and French. Why was the OIC established? The OIC first met in Morocco in September 1969, a month after an arson attack inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque that destroyed part of the roof and the 800-year-old pulpit of Salahuddin, best known for recapturing Jerusalem from the Crusaders in the 12th century. Reacting to the incident, representatives from 24 Muslim countries met in the capital Rabat to establish a body that would promote cooperation across the Muslim world. In March 1970, the first Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and plans for setting up a permanent secretariat for the OIC were established. Issues relating to Palestine have been central to the OIC’s agenda and summit discussions. The organisation has continuously condemned what member states consider Israeli aggressions against the Palestinians. Other issues that have also taken centre stage in OIC summits include the wars in Bosnia and Iraq, a rise in the number of refugees from Muslim-majority countries such as Syria, as well as Islamophobia in the West. Objectives and role According to its charter, the OIC aims to preserve Islamic values, safeguard and de-
fend the national sovereignty and independence of member states and to contribute to international peace and security. While the organisation has been known for its cultural and social projects, its political influence has been relatively limited. “Typically, in the past, the OIC has been effective in promoting cultural and educational projects across the Muslim world,” Sami Hamdi, a Middle East expert, told Al Jazeera. “However, its political capabilities remain severely limited.” According to Mamoon Alabbasi, a political analyst focusing on the Middle East and North Africa region, while the OIC has relative political weight, its rhetoric does not always translate into action on the ground. “With 57 member states… the OIC carries a [relatively] heavy political weight… [and] impact. But how much change that makes on the ground is not always clear,” said Alabbasi. Adding to its political limitations is its inability to unify its stance on issues, say experts. “Like other international organisations, such as the UN General Assembly, the OIC is supposed to have a unified voice but it does not because policies of the individual countries greatly differ,” said Alabbasi. “Most importantly, the OIC doesn’t have a unified voice because most of its member countries are not democracies. So, while their populations may be in agreement [over an issue] they do not always represent the views of their populations.” Hamdi agrees: “The OIC has a broad spectrum of different cultures. This means that the political front, even if there is a united stance, it means very little, practically.” Is the OIC relevant and effective? Like other intergovernmental organisations, although resolutions issued by the OIC are not usually followed by action, statements usually point towards member states’ “red lines” that they cannot cross, say experts. “If you want to know what position member states can take in the eyes of their own public, statements by the OIC are reflective of that. They [statements] show their [member states’] limits,” explained Alabbasi. Because the OIC includes a significant num-
ber of Arab states among its membership, it has often been compared with the Arab League. While the two organisations share many similarities, the main difference lies in the OIC’s limited politicisation compared with the Arab League, say analysts. “The Arab League is more of a political entity than the OIC given the close proximity of its members and the, often joint, threat that the countries have had to face in the past,” according to Hamdi. According to Alabbasi, because of its wider scope of membership, a lack of consensus within the OIC sets it farther apart from the Arab League. “The OIC is very different in the sense that member states cannot get a consensus across,” said Alabbasi “But in other organisations such as the GCC, and to a lesser extent the Arab League, there tends to be an agreement on issues in broad terms, as opinions are similar, even if there is some disagreement,” added Alabbasi. How does the OIC operate? The OIC holds an Islamic Summit once every three years. At the summit, heads of state discuss ways to achieve the charter’s objectives and make policy decisions that concern its member states. Talha Abdulrazaq, a Middle East expert at the University of Exeter’s Strategy and Security Institute, explained how OIC decisions and resolutions are much like they are at UN General Assembly. “Member states each get a vote. Each member state can table a resolution and then others can vote on it or suggest tweaks. “But much like the GA, OIC resolutions aren’t binding. They are just a declaration of the general feeling of the leaders of the Islamic world,” said Abdulrazaq. Meeting on a more regular basis, the council of foreign ministers convenes annually to evaluate the implementation of the organisation’s policies and objectives. The general secretariat, the OIC’s executive body, is responsible for implementing those decisions. Saudi Arabia hosts OIC, GCC meets amid rising US-Iran tensions (2:22) Source: aljazeera.com

School children release hundreds of butterflies at Surrey Centre Cemetery
Surrey, BC – Over 280 students from AJ McLellan Elementary School participated in the seventh annual Butterfly Release Celebration yesterday, at the Surrey Centre Cemetery. The annual event is part of the grade one lifecycle curriculum at AJ McLellan, educating students on the cycle of life. For weeks, 11 classrooms raised butterflies from egg, to chrysalis, to adult butterfly and learned about their environmental impact before releasing them at the cemetery. Butterfly gardens effectively attract and sustain other insects and organisms. Their larvae provide food for birds, lizards and other wildlife. In return, this wildlife keeps these gardens free from pests. “The idea behind the event is to teach children about
the cycle of life and enhance connections between the community and the cemetery,” said Yalda Asadian, City of Surrey Manager of Community Enhancement. “This event opens up conversations around life and death – an important topic we don’t often talk about with our children.” The Surrey Centre Cemetery is hosting another butterfly release on Father’s Day weekend this June 15 at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to honour fathers past and present. This free event is open to the public and guests can enjoy watching the release of over 100 butterflies at the cemetery. Visit Surrey Cemeteries online for more information. Surrey Centre Cemetery is located at 16671 Old McLellan Road

Andrew Wilkinson and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad session guage” Before March was done, Jas Johal had apologized for using a derogatory Punjabi term in question period, which one observer called “childish,” saying that “grown up people don’t use this kind of language.” (CBC, March 26) 4. Rich Coleman compares ALR changes to the Holocaust Next came Rich Coleman, who compared Agricultural Land Reserve changes to The Holocaust. Speaking on Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Coleman claimed a move requiring landowners to go through municipal governments to apply to remove land from the ALR was similar to “people whose rights were taken apart and away from them in the 1940s.” Coleman initially apologized “to anyone who took offence” before clarifying: “to be clear, I apologize without reservation for drawing the parallel I did earlier today.” Wilkinson issued a tweet that denounced Coleman’s comments but did not mention him by name. (Global, May 3) 5. Coleman and Throness speak at anti-abortion rally One week later, Coleman and Laurie Throness addressed an anti-abortion rally on the steps of
the legislature. Coleman described abortion as “totally, totally wrong.” Following backlash online, Coleman bizarrely attempted to claim he “did not refer to abortion” in his speech (which, again, was made at an anti-abortion rally). Throness attempted damage control by claiming “I do not call for laws against womens’ rights,” despite many of the speakers at the rally explicitly calling for government action against abortion. Again, Wilkinson was forced to denounce his MLAs in a tweet but did not mention them by name. (Daily Hive, May 10) 6.“Pakistan Canada association is disgusted with the comments made by Jas Johal” And on Monday Johal was up again, apologizing for saying that Jinny Sims represented “SurreyPanorama, not Islamabad North.” The comments had drawn outcry from the Pakistani-Canadian community. The Pakistan Canada Association said Johal’s comment “feeds into a troubling Islamophobic narrative,” while the Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association noted that Johal’s BC Liberal colleagues “clapped to strengthen and show support for his inappropriate statement.” (StarMetro, May 24)
7.“Especially for the South Asian community… it’s important to keep their kids out of the bad end of town, keep their kids out of gangs” Finally came Ian Paton. Speaking in support of an amendment lowering the age kids could work to 12, Paton told Minister Harry Bains on Monday: “Especially for the South Asian community, this is something I cannot believe the Minister would not stand behind this amendment. With the South Asian community that know it’s important to keep their kids out of the bad end of town, keep their kids out of gangs and whatnot, to give them the opportunity to work and get a job at even age 12, 13, 14, and 15.” After initially attempting to clarify his remarks without apologizing, Paton rose in the legislature on Tuesday morning to withdraw his comments. (Georgia Straight, May 28)
community that go out in the summertime — grandma and grandpa that go because they enjoy picking berries on the blueberry farms. They take their grandsons and their granddaughters with them to earn a few bucks. Getting your first paycheque at age 12 or 13 or 14 is so important,” he said. ‘That’s what good farm kids do’ Paton spoke against the provincial government’s child labour law legislation that would raise the working age for youth from 12 to 16. “Think of the things that kids are getting into nowadays who aren’t getting their first jobs. Look at the gangs we have in this province. Look at the social issues we have with kids that are sitting around on a Friday night and a Saturday night that have never even contemplated getting a job. What do they do? They get mixed up with some kids that are maybe into the bad end of town.” Paton argued that what makes “this country great” is “giving young people an opportunity to work on the farms.”
“That’s what good farm kids do. They put down their books. They changed their clothes. They went to the barn, and they started getting the cattle ready for milking time. The kids started doing chores,” he said. BC Greens, NDP criticize Paton’s comments According to Paton, raising the working age for youth in BC only adds to “red tape” and “bureaucracy.” “Quit making it tough for everybody in agriculture, especially for the South Asian community. This is something that I cannot believe, that the minister would not stand behind this amendment with the South Asian community that know it’s important to keep their kids out of the bad end of town, keep their kids out of gangs and whatnot, to give them the opportunity to work and get a job even at age 12, 13, 14, and 15.” Paton’s remarks were promptly criticized by BC Greens MLA Adam Olsen. “The previous comment there is just absolutely offensive. I just can’t even believe that those kinds of words are being spoken in this
House. We’re talking about how we need to get this country back to the way it was, make it great again. That rhetoric is just absolutely absurd,” he said. On Twitter, NDP MLA Ravi Kahlon commended Olsen for calling out Paton’s comments. Paton apologizes The BC NDP said that Paton withdrew his remarks and apologized for his comments yesterday. As did Liberal MLA Jas Johal who came under fire for saying that MLA Jinny Sims represented “Surrey-Panorama, not Islamabad North.” It’s disturbing to see Andrew Wilkinson’s BC Liberals disrespecting people of different backgrounds,” said BC NDP MLA Jagrup Brar, in a statement. “This pattern of behaviour is offensive and hurtful to our communities. British Columbians deserve much better than what they’re getting from Andrew Wilkinson’s team.” In a statement sent to Daily Hive, Paton said his “choice of words in the moment was unfortunate.” Read his full apology below:
VICTORIA - In the last 24 hours, BC Liberal MLAs Jas Johal and Ian Paton have been forced to withdraw and apologize for their offensive remarks in the Legislature. Yesterday, Richmond-Queensborough MLA Jas Johal apologized for saying that MLA Jinny Sims represented “Surrey-Panorama, not Islamabad North.” Johal’s apology followed outcry from the Pakistani-Canadian community. The Pakistan-Canada Association said Johal’s comment “feeds into a troubling Islamophobic narrative.” The Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association noted that Johal’s BC Liberal
colleagues “clapped to strengthen and show support for his inappropriate statement.” And then yesterday afternoon, BC Liberal MLA Ian Paton suggested the South Asian community needs to keep their kids out of gangs. The comments were directed to Labour Minister Harry Bains as Paton argued in favour of an amendment that would allow children as young as 12 to work in any type of job. Paton said: “Especially for the South Asian community, this is something I cannot believe the Minister would not stand behind this amendment with the South Asian community that know
it’s important to keep their kids out of the bad end of town, keep their kids out of gangs and whatnot, to give them the opportunity to work and get a job at even age 12, 13, 14 and 15.” After attempting to clarify his comments without apologizing or withdrawing them yesterday afternoon, Paton rose in the house today to withdraw his comments. BC NDP MLA Jagrup Brar: “It’s disturbing to see Andrew Wilkinson’s BC Liberals disrespecting people of differties. British Columbians deserve much betent backgrounds. This pattern of behaviour is offensive and hurtful to our communi- ter than what they’re getting from Andrew Wilkinson’s team.”
By Karen McCrimmon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety While crime rates have generally been declining in Canada for over 20 years, gun violence and gun crime has been rising since 2013, including gun homicides which have doubled. The federal government has a responsibility to take action to keep communities safe. And Parliament responded, by passing Bill C-71, a package of common-sense measures to combat gun violence. Together with new federal investments in enforcement, preven-
tion and countering smuggling, stronger laws will support public safety and bolster police work. These key changes to our laws uphold the commitments Liberals made to Canadians in the last election to take action on background checks, licence verification, recordkeeping, classification and transportation. Police support C-71. It will help them catch criminals by requiring businesses to keep records of sales of non-restricted firearms, giving officers a starting place for investigations into crimes committed with these weapons, which account for 4 of 10 gun crimes. Gordon Sneddon from the Toronto Police told a parliamentary committee studying the legislation that “it’s really important from a policing and investigative perspective to be able to trace that firearm. I can’t stress that enough.” The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) called it “essential”. Chief Adam Palmer, the President of the CACP, says C-71’s changes to licence verification are “critical” and that its stronger
safeguards related to the transportation of restricted or prohibited firearms, like handguns an fully automatic rifles, mean “people are actually held more accountable” and “it would reduce the likelihood of theft from vehicles.” That’s vital—there are over 400 break and enters into motor vehicles to steal firearms every year. New stronger, lifetime background checks for licensing will help keep guns out of the wrong hands. Not only does this keep guns away from gangsters, it helps address two silent tragedies: domestic violence and suicide. The testimony before committees of Parliament was compelling: Lise Martin from Women’s Shelters Canada “strongly” supported C-71, saying that “the average number of women staying at the shelter on that day who had been threatened by a gun is 100. The link between guns and violence against women is clear.” More than 500 people die in gun-related suicides every year in Canada, often youth. Professor Brian Mishara from the Université du Québec à Montréal backed the bill, not-
As a new poll shows BC Liberal Leader dreWilkinson struggling to gain traction with people, a look back at the BC Liberal effort in the spring session offers some insight. Every week of the session seemed to bring another apology, retraction, or “clarification” for an out of touch or offensive comment from Wilkinson or a member of his team. 1. Renting is “a wacky time of life” Wilkinson himself kicked it off in February when he characterized renting as a “fun” and “wacky time of life.” After initially attempting to clarify his comments without apologizing, Wilkinson eventually said he was sorry “if people have misunderstood those remarks.” (CBC, March 1) 2.“Students may get a little carried away” A week later, Wilkinson took a stand against interest-free student loans on the grounds that students “may get a little carried away” with debt. Wilkinson faced a backlash from students, who called the comments “insulting.” Wilkinson was forced to walk back his position in a tweet claiming the media coverage was inaccurate and insisting he would not bring back interest on student loans. (Global, March 5) 3.“Grown up people don’t use this kind of lan-
BC Liberal MLA apologizes for implying lower working age helps keep South Asian kids out of gangs
BC Liberal MLA Ian Paton is facing criticism for comments he made suggesting that amending the province’s labour laws to allow children as young as 12 to work any kind of job will help keep South Asian kids out of gangs. The comments were made on Monday, in the BC Legislature. Paton, an MLA for Delta South, said that as a kid he had many farm jobs before the age of 16 which kept him busy and out of trouble. He then began to focus on Metro Vancouver’s South Asian community. “Look at the families of the South Asian

ing “anything you can do to restrict, delay or make it more difficult for people who are vulnerable and suicidal to have access to guns will certainly save lives.” Under the radar, a segment of gun users have been vigorously campaigning against these common sense measures. The Conservative Party has quietly, but aggressively courted them, opposing the bill at every turn, and running extensive targeted Facebook ads that only certain users see. And it’s not just for show: Andrew Scheer has pledged that if he is elected Prime Minister this fall, he’ll repeal C-71 in its entirety. Laws police call “essential” and “critical” would be gone. That stance on guns is reckless, and doesn’t provide any comfort to the families and communities who are looking for real leadership to combat gun violence. The differences between the two parties could not be more stark. There is only one party with a credible agenda for combatting the scourge of gun violence.

tre in June. In May, the per litre price was Rs108.42. High speed diesel, which saw the maximum hike, was increased by Rs4.50 to cost Rs126.82 per litre from the previous Rs122.32 per litre. Meanwhile, the prices of kerosene and light diesel oil saw an increase of Rs1.69 and

amount was proceeds of crime, he said it was being investigated. Mr Abro said another company Park Lane Private Limited owned by the former president also received a huge amount from the same account. NAB has filed a separate reference in this case as well. Court extends interim bail of ex-president, sister in fake bank accounts case When Justice Kayani asked why NAB had filed multiple references when these could be filed as a single case, NAB’s Additional Prosecutor General Jahanzeb Bharwana said the Supreme Court had directed the anti-graft watchdog to file multiple references. During the hearing, the IHC bench extended the interim bail of Mr Zardari and Ms Talpur, as well as some other accused persons. Mr Bharwana informed the court that there was nothing against Khawaja Nimar Majeed and three officials of the Summit Bank and NAB was not going to arrest them in the fake accounts case. Subsequently, the IHC disposed of their petitions.
Giving some details of the fake accounts case, Mr Bahrwana said the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) under the directive of the Supreme Court had traced 28 fake accounts where the ostensible account holders disassociated themselves from the accounts. He said the FIA initially registered the FIR in the fake accounts case under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, Prevention of Corruption Act and Anti Money Laundering Act. A challan was submitted to a banking court in Karachi, whereas the NAB chairman in the light of the SC directive transferred these cases to an accountability court of Islamabad. Naek’s press conference Farooq H. Naek, the counsel for Mr Zardari and Ms Talpur, claimed at a press conference that the former president had nothing to do with the references filed by NAB because he was a minority shareholder in the Zardari Group. He said the Zardari Group was a private firm that received Rs30m from a bank account.
According to Mr Naek, this amount was paid by sugar mills owned by the Omni Group for sugarcane crops of Mr Zardari and his sister. He said the case was originally registered with the Karachi FIA and tried in the banking court from where it was transferred to the Rawalpindi NAB. Mr Zardari had challenged the transfer of the case and the matter was pending before the Supreme Court, he added. Source: dawn.com
Zardari Group got Rs30m of Rs4.4bn suspicious transactions, IHC told
ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) informed the Islamabad High Court on Thursday that out of Rs4.4 billion suspicious transactions through a fictitious bank account, the company owned by former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur received only Rs30 million. NAB investigation officer Mohammad Ali Abro, who is probing the fake bank accounts case, told a two-judge IHC bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had registered an FIR in the case in which Mr Zardari and his sister were also entangled at a later stage. The FIR was based on the suspicious transactions of Rs4.4bn, he added. He said the account titled M/s A One International was fake and it received a sum of Rs4.4bn out of which Rs30m was paid to the Zardari Group at two different times. When the court asked the investigation officer if there was any evidence that showed the
England start 2019 World Cup campaign with 104-run win over South Africa
England inflicted a heavy 104-run defeat over South Africa on Thursday in the opening match of the 2019 World Cup at Kennington Oval in London. Chasing a 308-run target, South Africa were dealt an early blow when opener Hashim Amla had to retire hurt after copping a Jofra Archer bouncer. Quinton de Kock (68) top scored for the visitors and Rassie van der Dussen chipped in with a 50 but no other batsmen did enough for the Africans to pose a serious threat to the hosts. Archer was the star of the the show as he picked up three wickets and bowled with hostile pace that troubled Faf du Plessis’ men. Ben Stokes was named the man of the match for his two-for coupled with an 89-run knock in the first innings. Earlier, South Africa had restricted England to 311 for eight as the tournament hosts and favourites made a stuttering start in their
quest to win the trophy for the first time. Ben Stokes top-scored with 89, while England captain Eoin Morgan (57), Jason Roy (54) and Joe Root (51) all made fifties. But England, who last year set a world record for the highest one-day international total of 481-6 and have often blown teams away with the bat, were repeatedly pegged back by a Proteas side who deployed the slower ball to good effect. England, after Britain’s Prince Harry officially opened the tournament, lost a wicket second ball before Roy and Root shared a stand of 106 that was equalled by Morgan and Stokes. South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, despite being without
injured spearhead Dale Steyn, saw his decision to field rewarded in dramatic style when Imran Tahir struck with just the second ball of the match to dismiss Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck. Normally it is a paceman who has the first spell. But Du Plessis gave the ball to 40-year-old leg-spinner Tahir, the oldest player in the tournament, instead and a well-flighted delivery had Bairstow edging to wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock, with the Pakistan-born Tahir running off in a semi-circle — his familiar celebration. Roy and Root were both in fine touch and England would have wanted at least one of them to go on to a big score. But from 107-1, England lost two wickets for four runs in four balls.
the toss and opting to field first, produced a ruthless display of fast bowling to dismiss Pakistan for a disappointing 105. Having elected to field after winning the toss, West Indies made full use of overcast conditions as Oshane Thomas took four wickets for 27 runs, while captain Jason Holder (3-42) and the returning Andre Russell (2-4) completed the demolition job. The in-form Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam got off to solid starts but were both dismissed for 22, sparking a middle-order collapse that the former champions did not recover from. Pakistan were bowled out in 21.4 overs for their lowest World Cup total since a paltry 74 against England at Adelaide in 1992, the year
Imran Khan’s team went on to lift their only 50-overs crown. The green shirts lost their fourth wicket at the start of the 14th over, when Babar Azam was caught out after scoring 22 runs. Wickets then fell in succession, with captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali and Mohammad Hafeez all going back to the pavilion. Wahab Riaz’s 11-ball 18 runs could not do much to salvage his side’s score and he was bowled out on the fourth ball of the 22nd over. At the end of 10 overs, Pakistan had put 45 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of three
Roy flat-batted an intended pull off Andile Phehlukwayo to Du Plessis at mid-off before Root steered Rabada to backward point, where JP Duminy held a sharp catch. Morgan, whose aggressive approach has been symbolic of England’s rise to the top of the one-day international rankings after their woeful first-round exit at the 2015 World Cup, struck the first two sixes of the match off successive balls from fast bowler Lungi Ngidi. The left-hander’s drive over long-off was followed by a pull above long leg. But having completed a run-a-ball fifty, Morgan’s drive off Tahir (two for 61) was well caught low down by a diving Aiden Markram, running in from long-on. Dangerman Jos Buttler fell for just 18 while left-hander Stokes, trying to break the shackles, saw his 79-ball knock end in the penultimate over when a reverse hit off Ngidi (three for 66) found Hashim Amla at third man. Lineups: England: Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (captain), Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer. South Africa: Hashim Amla, Quinton De Kock, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis (captain), Rassie van der Dussen, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir. West Indies pulverise Pakistan by seven wickets at Trent Bridge
West Indies inflicted a heavy seven-wicket defeat on Pakistan in their opening fixture of the 2019 World Cup at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Friday. The Calypso Kings chased down the measly 106-run target set by the Champions Trophy winners for the loss of just three wickets in the 14th over. The Caribbean side lost their first wicket when Shai Hope (11) was caught by Mohammad Hafeez off Mohammad Amir, who also took the wicket of Darren Bravo, caught by Babar Azam at second slip without scoring any runs. West Indies’ third player was lost when Chris Gayle was caught by Shadab Khan off Amir, once again.Earlier, West Indies, after winning
wickets. Andre Russell took the wickets of Haris Sohail and Fakhar Zaman while Sheldon Cottrell picked up the wicket of opener Imamul Haq. Thomas was named the player of the match for his figures of 27-4. Source: dawn.com

Tips for Maintaining Your Health After Ramadan
E
very year, the Holy month of Ramadan provides us with the opportunity to eliminate unhealthy eating patterns and gives our overburdened digestive systems a much needed break. During this sacred month, the rituals of fasting, night prayer and reading the Holy Qur’an on a daily basis can have a transformational effect on our overall sense of well-being and contentment. However, now that the blessed month of Ramadan has passed and the Eid ulFitr festivities are over, here are 10 tips for maintaining the incredible health benefits and habits that you worked so hard to gain in Ramadan. 1. Fast Twice a Week Try fasting two days a week after Ramadan. Occasional fasting has also shown to accelerate the activity and growth of nerve cells. To follow the sunnah of the Prophet , try to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “Deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.” [Tirmidhi] Also, try fasting the 6 days of Shawwal. There are enormous spiritual benefits to fasting in Shawwal. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari narrated that the Messenger said: “Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal will be (rewarded) as if he had fasted the entire year.” [Muslim] 2. Have 2-3 Meals a Day
Make a habit of eating 2-3 regular meals a day (similar to Ramadan), rather than 6 small ones. The sensation of hunger between meals, contrary to popular belief, can be of great benefit to our physical health. According to a study published by PLOS ONE, the sensation of hunger may actually protect against Alzheimer’s disease. The feeling of hunger can also have spiritual benefits too. Ibrahim ibn Adham said: “Any one who controls his stomach is in control of his deen, and anyone who controls his hunger is in control of good behavior. Disobedience towards Allah is nearest to a person who is satiated with a full stomach, and furthest away from a person who is hungry.” 3. Eat Dried Fruits Keep eating those dried fruits that you made a habit of eating during Ramadan. Allah’s Messenger said: “Whoever has dried dates, then let him break the fast with that, and whoever does not, then let him break the fast with water, for indeed water is purifying.” [Tirmidhi] .Dried dates and figs are both excellent source of iron, fiber and antioxidants that protect against harmful free radicals, which are associated with ageing. If you have a sweet tooth and must have dessert after meals, have three dates instead of a dense, nutrition-deficit piece of chocolate cake. Allah’s Messenger said: “He who eats seven ‘Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them.” [Bukhari] 4. The 80/20 Rule Practise the 80/20 rule and eat only until you are 80% full. A good way to do this is to eat slowly, so you are aware of your satiation level while you eat. Eating on the go or while watching television are surefire ways to overeat and hinder your body’s ability to properly digest what you consume. Dur-
ing Ramadan, the ritual of fasting allowed us to consciously recognise our body’s hunger and satiation signals. Therefore, avoid returning to mindless eating habits and most importantly beware of overeating, as the Messenger of Allah was reported to have said: “The people who most eat their fill in this world will be the most hungry on the Day of Resurrection.” [Ibn Majah] 5. Use the Rule of Thirds Ramadan was an excellent opportunity to learn how to plan our meals carefully and avoid the after-iftar slump that hindered our ability to pray taraweeh comfortably. After Ramadan, use the rule of thirds to keep your daily energy levels up and prevent the sense of heavy-headedness that often follows a heavy meal. Our wise Prophet Muhammad once said: “A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.” [Ibn Majah] 6. Keep the Sadaqah Flowing Keep the sadaqah flowing and reap the mental health rewards of giving. If you were supporting disadvantaged families in Ramadan, continue to do so after Ramadan. The act of giving, whether of your finances, skills or time, is extremely rewarding not only in the Hereafter but also here on Earth. Evidence has shown that small gestures of kindness or more significant ones, such as volunteering in the community, can substantially increase your overall sense of happiness and satisfaction. “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 261]

Eid al-Fitr: it’s all about generosity and gratitude
E
id al-Fitr, which means the “Festival of the Breaking of the Fast”, marks the end of Ramadan. Ramadan is a month-long when Muslims fast, or go without food and drinks, during daylight. The celebration of Eid al-Fitr also signals the first day in the month of Shawwal. The date of this festival is based on the lunar calendar. It begins with the first sighting of the new moon, so most of the time Muslims have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date. The starting day varies every year and from country to country depending on geographical location. In many Muslim countries, the three-day festival is a nation-
al holiday. That means people don’t go to school or work. Instead they participate in the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. How is it observed? Fruit, pastries and other sweets are are eaten during Eid. During Eid al-Fitr, Muslim families and friends get together to celebrate. The day usually begins with the whole family enjoying a small breakfast. This is the first daytime meal that has been eaten in a month. Muslims then gather outside or at a mosque to pray together and listen to a sermon that’s followed by a prayer called the Salat al-Eid. In the afternoon, Muslims get together with family and friends to enjoy a big feast (with lots of sweets!) and give gifts to each other. There may also be parades, processions, and other outdoor celebrations. Eid is marked with a special set of prayers on the first morning of the festival, followed by the first daylight meal in a month, usually shared with friends and family. Many return to their family homes to celebrate. A vast array of sweet dishes and treats are prepared and consumed. Traditionally, people greet each other by saying: Eid Mubarak, =which means “Blessed Eid.. In some countries the prayers take place outside, while others are
Open House Invitation By: Asma Shums We are all hereby invited to the open house invitation to the home of happiness, mindfulness, and a life of success. Eid Mubarak to all our Muslim brothers and sisters around the world. This feeling of celebration is unmatched and unique, a feeling shared by all of us after going through something challenging together. It was not simply the shared feelings of hunger and thirst, not just the feelings of eating and conversing at the end of the day, or the early morning meals we shared with our loved ones. It encompassed our experiences in between; the prayers we shared and the goal we hoped to achieve and did together. It was the combined experience of our small community around us to the millions in the same practice aiming to be king, patient, and forgiving collectively over an auspicious month. We have failed and we have
succeeded and now it is our job to extend our ability to control our emotions and do good by others after this month has ended. We can rejoice and share happiness since we have earned it. We can embrace our feelings and be proud of our accomplishment. Take a Stretch Amidst our own struggles to last the day without any food or water and unwavering responsibilities, we have been so focused on finishing the fast that we have forgotten to sometimes see the world around us. We end up turning back to who we were 30 days before and live our life. This month is a cleanse for our soul and an opportunity to reflect and create a higher level of selfawareness. It is okay to take a break, relax, catch up with our friends for brunch, go for dinners, go to the movies and grab a snack, and partake in work potlucks. However, it
hosted in mosques or large halls. After the prayers, Muslims wish those around them a happy Eid. People then visit relatives, friends and sometimes graveyards to pray for their dead. Many people wear traditional clothes, give gifts or money to children, and donate to charity. In some countries, the holiday is known as Sweet Eid for its variety of sweets. Are there any other special traditions? Since giving to others through charity is an important part of Ramadan, it is also a part of the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Many Muslims donate different kinds of food to the poor. This form of charity is called sadagah al-fitr, and it makes sure that everyone will be able to mark the end of Ramadan by enjoying a special meal. Do some countries have different traditions when celebrating Eid al-Fitr? While Eid al-Fitr celebrations are similar in most places, some countries do have their own unique customs. In Indonesia, for example, many Muslims visit the graves of their family members and clean the gravesites during this holiday. And in Turkey, people show an extra sign of respect to the elderly throughout Eid al-Fitr by kissing
their right hand when they meet. How do people dress for Eid? Any of the Muslims like to celebrate by dressing up and wearing their best clothes on Eid day and going out to meet friends and relatives, looking and smelling good. Muslims begin this occasion with the Eid prayers in the morning Eid is a well-known tradition from Islamic history and is also indicated by Sunnah. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was known to have worn his best cloak on Eid. An important marker of Eid is the clothes. Some would wear clothes from their culture, while others would pick out something new to wear. This year, social media users were already fretting over Eid clothes mid-way through Ramadan. A few Muslim-owned businesses started trading free Eid outfits for retweets. What are the common Eid greetings? Depending on the country and language. For instance, in Indonesia Eid is called Lebaran, so Indonesians would say, “Selamat Lebaran” which means Happy Eid. Other variations of Happy Eid are “Mutlu Bayramlar” in Turkish and “Barka da Sallah” in Hausa, a Nigerian language.
is now a journey to embody the lessons we learnt during our journey and migrate it into our daily lives. Take a moment to read the news and see the mounting support from our communities around the world to others, the participation and understanding by others of different faiths, and appreciate the good in the world. Let’s join together to be a true community that fosters all the qualities we have come to address and develop during our month of self-control. Let us say good-bye to hate and create a world of love, patience, acceptance, and kindness. Act of Mercy
the forgiveness in our lives and focus on our own actions. Make yourself in such a way that you are always part of the solution, not the problem. Allah is not cruel. Not only has Allah disallowed oppression among human beings [Sahih Muslim, Book 032, 6247]; Allah is kind and loves kindness in all forms [Sahih Bukhari 6528]. This must be the basis of how we practise Islam. And always remember: God is like Wifi, He is available everywhere, but you have to connect with Him with the correct password which is Prayer and a clean heart. Eid Mubarak! Asma Shums <asmashums@gmail.com>
The biggest lesson, if there can be one, is the act of forgiveness in this Holy month. There were many people who could not fast and our religion permits those to do so. There were many who could not due to health reasons, age, or obligations. We should reflect if we have condemned those in our hearts or our words regardless of what country and its rules that we live in. Let’s embody
Top 10 Summer Vacation Challenges for Working Moms
By: Liz Taurasi Summer vacation can be hectic for working moms. For working moms, summertime doesn’t always mean the living’s easy. From coordinating activities, camps and child care to planning vacations and family visits, scheduling your summer can be downright daunting. Don’t get me wrong: The school year can get crazy hectic, but at least it’s consistent. With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top 10 unexpected challenges working families face when summer vacation comes around. 1. Yup, Mom Guilt Believe it or not, summer can be emotionally tough on us moms. You want to give your kids the best summer ever, but scheduling beach days, amusement park visits and fun in the sun can be a challenge to balance with your responsibilities at work. And that’s where the guilt creeps in. Once the kids get older and into school, the summer months are a well-deserved break from school, but before that, you feel like it’s on you to make sure the warmer weather isn’t July feels differently than January for the little ones. 2. Pressure of Planning Everything When you have a school-aged kid or three, the schedule fills up quickly. It’s all you can do just to keep up, sometimes. But at least there’s a certain cadence to it. As much as you might curse the constant stream of field trips, carpools and lacrosse practices, you’ll be longing for that pre-programmed busyness once summer comes and you’re the one responsible for planning all of the kids’
activities. 3. Water, Sunburns and Other Safety Concerns Whether you’re spending the day at the beach or laying out by the pool, the sun and water aren’t just fun – they’re safety concerns. Parents constantly find themselves needing to stay alert when they’re spending time with their kids – or their kids’ friends – by the ocean or the pool. And that’s not to mention the bee stings, playgrounds and other safety concerns associated with spending long days outdoors. 4. Adjusting to Activity Schedules Once you fill your calendar, the next challenge arises. Swimming lessons, specialized sports camps and other recreational activities often begin mid-morning and end during the early or mid-afternoon. Not exactly convenient for parents working downtown, who need to figure out drop-offs, pickups and child care arrangements. 5. Your Summer Care Situation As if the camps and rec programs aren’t enough reminder already, child care providers often offer another reminder that, yes, it’s summer for everyone. Many college nannies return home for the summer, leaving families to find other arrangements. Family day care providers will often close for a week or two during the summer to take their own vacations. When it comes to figuring out your summer child care situation, do yourself a favor and start planning well in advance, because good help can be hard to find. 6. Those Weekend Crowds Part of summer is being able to take your
children to the beach or hit up amusement parks for a day of fun, but if you want to do that and you’re a working mom you are stuck with only two options: fight the weekend crowds or take a day off from work. Some companies offer Summer Fridays, so at least you’re able to get a jump on the traffic heading when you’re the beach for the weekend of sun and sand. 7. Competition for Camps If you want to get your kid a spot in a good summer camp, better start planning months in advance. Many camps – probably most, in fact – start signups for summer camps over the winter months to take advantage, offering early bird discounts and making sure they get the enrollment numbers they need in time to plan their programs and budgets. For parents, this means carefully laying summer camp plans, including coordinating which weeks your children’s friends are going to be where, is a challenge. Once it’s done, though, you can breathe a big sigh of relief – until summer rolls around and your parents decide they want to visit a week when your children are booked to be at camp. 8. Your Child is Too Young for Most Programs In many towns, mine included, there aren’t many options for town wide programs if your child is under the age of 4. That can make keeping your child active and involved with other children during the summer that much harder. I was able to sign my 3 ½-year-old son up for two different weeks of sports camp, but they only run for a week from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. each day. It’s a win
that he’s able to participate, but it means I’m standing on the sidelines for 45 minutes instead of being able to run errands or complete a few projects if he was at a three- or four-hour program. 9. Cost Whether you’re paying for programs by the week rather than by the day or you’re springing to bring a carload of kids (yours plus friends) to the zoo for an afternoon, summer can get expensive fast. 10. Your Actual Vacation Mountains or the beach? Long weekend getaways or a few full-week trips? Do you go with friends? Should you bring the nanny? For working families, planning a vacation can be as much work as the jobs you’re getting away from. But once you get there, it’ll be worth it to spend some quality time having fun with your family. All this and we’re not even getting into the back-to-school craziness. … Yet.
