152nd Canada Day Ahead! JULY 1st

On Monday, July 1, 2019 this year we are going to be celebrating anada’s 152nd birthday in as usual way with a fun-filled evening of live music and dance performances, family activities and a spectacular fireworks show choreographed to music. There are plenty of opportunities to show off our national pride throughout the country on Canada Day. As expected, Canadians are going to mark the anniversary with more excitement. ‘Canada Day’ being a federal statutory holiday, is celebrated throughout Canada with full fervour in recognition of the “July 1, 1867 enactment” of the British North Americas Act (BNA), also called “The Constitution Act, 1867.” Historically speaking, the Canadian founders of confederation were the representatives of the British North America colonies who attended the three major conferences on Canadian confederation. Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on that day. Not only was he the ‘father of confederation,’ but he also drafted two-thirds of the provisions of the BNA creating the ‘Dominion of Canada.’ As a result, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain. The four provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Currently, Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories. This Canadian national holiday was enacted in 1879 under the name “Dominion Day.” In fact, the formation of the union of provinces under a new country is the basis of Canada’s July 1 celebration each year. However, the ‘Dominion Day’ changed into ‘Canada Day’ on October 27, 1982. The official lyrics “O Canada” were finalized in 1968 by a special joint committee of the Senate and

C

House of Commons. This day also marks the anniversary of the officially proclaimed “O Canada” as national anthem. The Royal anthem plays ‘God Save The Queen’ at some festive locations celebrating Canada Day. The celebrations will be all over Canada. Similarly, Surrey, BC has its own celebration features that include the world-class entertainment, great food, games and amusement rides, and indeed a spectacular fireworks finale. Surrey Canada Day will be held at the same venue as last year, the newlynamed Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre. Cloverdale Pakistan Canada Association planed to celebrate 151st Canaday Day and Eid Picnic celebration on June 24 at Crescent Beech Park South Surrey.

Pakistani Candian Cultural Associations arranged on July Ist at Crescent Park South Surrey. The BC Muslims Association celebrating Eid Bash and Canada Day on July Ist at Masjid Al-Salaam Burnaby. And in all above events people would celebrate the special day by joining BBQ parties and enjoying the fireworks all over the country. Indeed, the event serves as a good bridge to facilitate Muslims to build ties with Canadians of other faiths. Despite the insurmountable difficulty, a tolerance level among the members of multi-cultural society is a real blessing, as it has been playing a big role in promoting diversity in schools, work places, businesses and academic institutions. Of course, the credit goes

to millions of motivated immigrants who kept building this nation to make Canada an attractive country to live peacefully. Every year, tens of thousands of Canadians celebrate Canada Day in grand style in the nation’s capital flocking to Parliament Hill to join with the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Of course, the Canadians are entitled to celebrate their legacy, pride and opportunities. In nutshell: Parliament Hill is the focal point for Canada Day celebrations, with a giant stage featuring Canadian performers throughout the day, the noontime playing of Oh Canada and a flyby by Canada’s Snowbirds aerobatics team and other military aircraft. Certainly, Canada Day unites all Canadians regardless of creed, culture or ethnicity; it helps us understand the significance of the Canadian life. In other words, it brings us together, strengthens our communities, and helps us understand the significance of the Canadian life. As Canadian history reflects the wonderful diverse cultural races, the importance of celebrating Canada Day means a lot to all Canadians. For happy “Canada Day” celebrations, Canadians and the government must be on one page, and the media should play its role without bias to promote love and affection among all. As the Liberal party of Canada is surviving to resume power, the respect and image of Canada among the international countries is finally normalising faster than previously thought. Credit goes to the Trudeau-government for being really pro-people without bias/discrimination. Long Live Canada!

‘Abrahamic Faith’! ‘Islam’ the religion of Prophet Abraham (AS)’. World wide the ‘Torch Bearer’ Millions of Muslims consists of Jews, Christians, Bani Israeli, Hindus, Punjabis, Chinese, Japanese, Arabs, Africans, (all converts) are reviving the monotheistic religion of Prophet Abraham (AS), a man of truth who had very close connection with AllahCreator, and taught the most important concept of unity with One GOD and only HIS worship is divinely accepted and is legal/halal. The perfect ‘unity’ reflects in Muslim prayers praying shoulder to shoulder all colors and tribes united and sit-

ting together for Iftari to break the fast proving they are the true Muslims followers of Allah-Creator and obedient of HIS commandments. If any religion is not Monotheistic and has a middleman as god then it cannot be called ‘religion’, but man made Cult. As the human gods are most intimidating slave masters, inciting disunity and dividing the communities. Yet preaching fake peace, and useless pluralism. It is not a Rocket Science that we cannot understand the true concept of One GOD and HIS way of religion. Islam is the Divinely revealed religion and has remained the same since 14C. Though, the fake Muslims do not believe the same. Every Islamic rituals and practices are divinely ordained that’s why it has physical and spiritual benefits. The performance of all the Islamic symbolic rites marks the tradition of true worship of One GOD, praying and prostrating to the Supreme-Being only. By replacing any objects while prostrating or praying to the other deities or their Photos would be considered Idol worshiping, blasphemous heinous crime, showing rebelliousness in opposition to Supreme Being, such sin will not be forgiven.

“Who turns away from the religion of Abraham but such as debase their souls with folly? (Q.125-130). Prophet Abraham (AS) was born in the family of Idol worshippers, but he obeyed the command of GOD to Bow to HIS will and said: I bow my Will to the Lord and Cherisher of the Universe”. (Quran 2-131). Evidently, Prophet Abraham (AS) tackled his Idol worshiper Father: “O, my Father! Why worship that which heareth not and seeth not and can profit thee nothing”. “O my father serve not Satan, he is rebel against Allah-Creator”. (19-42, 44). “And so WE covenanted with Abraham and Ismail that they should sanctify MY House: and Abraham and Ismail raised the Foundation of the House with the prayer: “Our Lord accept this service from us, for Thou art the all Hearing and all knowing: Our Lord make of us Muslims, bowing to thy will”: “Abraham said: my Lord make this city of peace (Q. 2-125, 126).Kaba, in Mecca the first house of worship of Creator was built by P. Abraham (AS) and his first born son P. Ishmail (A.S). The same belief of ‘True Worship’ is continued today after centuries, revived by his Progeny final universal Messenger Muhammad (saws). Who was

given the final Revelation the Quran revealed in the Sacred month of Ramadaan: “There hath come to you from Allah a new Light and a Perspicuous Book”. (Q. 5-15). The 1st Pillar of Islam of ‘worship of One Creator-GOD is also the continuation of the same commandment of past Biblical (Muslim) Prophets and Messengers. Mecca the holy territory containing centuries old sacred places, symbolic monuments and Historical facts being revived: commemorating Lady H. Hagar (RA) wife of Prophet Abraham (AS) and the Mother of Prophet Ishmail (AS), centuries old miraculous Zam Zam Water, Mt. Arafat where Prophet Adam (AS) and his wife eve (RA) were re-united. Eid Mubarak.

UK will never allow politically motivated extradition: British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, in a joint press conference held with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in London on Wednesday, assured that “no extradition treaty signed by the UK would ever allow for politically motivated extradition”.According to a statement released by the Pakistan High Commission, Foreign Minister Qureshi and

British Foreign Secretary Hunt held the 4th review of Pakistan-UK Enhanced Strategic Dialogue (ESD) at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, today. “Both sides pledged to move forward with an early conclusion of the extradition treaty and readmission agreement,” said the statement. Qureshi, in response to Hunt’s statement to the media, said: “Pakistan does not want to use extradition for political victimisation, that’s not the idea.” “We feel that extradition is important. And we have also discussed in my meeting with the [British] home secretary that the impediment [...] was the issue of capital punishment and we have resolved that by taking a decision that we are going to make amendments in the Pakistan penal code to address this issue,” said Qureshi.“So this will not be misused, but it is a requirement which needs to be discussed. And you know, concluded,” he added. The statements by the two dignitaries come in the backdrop of reports that an agreement has been reached between Pakistani and British authorities for the extradition of former finance minister Ishaq Dar to Pakistan. ‘We reject the budget’: Shahbaz Sharif criticises govt over ‘taking dictation’ from IMF

Following a week of ruckus in the National Assembly, the government and opposition finally agreed not to disrupt a debate on the federal budget — presented on June 11 — giving Leader of the Opposition Shahbaz Sharif the opportunity to open up the general discussion on Wednesday. PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari spoke briefly at the start of today’s session, urging Speaker Asad Qaiser

once again to issue the production orders for former president Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N’s Saad Rafique, and North Waziristan MNAs Ali Wazir and Mohsin Dawar. Making the most of the opportunity, Shahbaz delivered a speech which went on for more than 3 hours, and touched upon a number of topics, including PML-N government’s performance, state of economy, International Mone-

tary Fund (IMF) loan, foreign debt, rate of US dollar — and the budget. Shahbaz began his speech by first addressing the chaos the assembly had witnessed in its last three sessions, expressing regret over “wasting days”. “It [the pandemonium] was against the traditions of this house, it does not add to its glory.” He also backed Bilawal’s demand for the production orders of the four MNAs.

No ulterior motives found on NAB’s part, says IHC on dismissal of Zardari and Talpur’s bail pleas The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday said that white-collar crimes are “not easy to deduct and trace” and therefore, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) required custody of former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur. The order also stated that “no mala fide or ulterior motives” were found on NAB’s part “which is the core principle for grant or refusal of the bail before arrest”. Last week, the high court had dismissed the applications for a pre-arrest bail by Zardari and Talpur in the fake accounts reference. Following the dismissal, Zardari was arrested by a 15-member NAB team while his sister, Talpur, was taken into custody on June

14. Both PPP leaders are in NAB custody on remand. Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, who announced the verdict, in their written order issued on Tuesday said that white-collar crimes are “not easy to deduct and trace and cannot be equated with other general offences”. “The accused persons are to be confronted with the documents and inquire about the same repeatedly in order to build up the chain.” It stated that for this purpose, the NAB authorities required custody of the petitioners. According to the order, the legal counsel for the petitioners had argued that since a reference had been filed, NAB Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal had “no lawful authority”

to execute arrest warrants. They had also said that as bonds had been furnished, the petitioners could not be arrested. The IHC order noted that the furnishing of bonds does not bar NAB from making an arrest regarding an investigation in the case. It stated that the bond is submitted “only for personal appearance” before the court. According to the order, the argument that the accountability bureau chairman did not have the authority or jurisdiction in the matter was “without substance”. The order stated that under Section 24(a) read with Section 24(c) of the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999, the chairman could issue arrest warrants even after a reference was filed. Egypt’s ex-President Mohamed US to send 1,000 more troops to Morsi dies after court appearance Middle East amid Iran tensions

Egypt’s first freely elected president had suffered from neglect during years of imprisonment after his 2013 overthrow. Egypt’s former President Mohamed Morsi has died after appearing in court in the capital, Cairo, according to authorities. The public prosecutor said the 67-year-old collapsed in a defendants’ cage in the courtroom and was pronounced dead in hospital at 4:50pm local time (02:50 GMT) on Monday. A medical report showed no apparent recent injuries on his body, the prosecutor said.“Morsi died today while attending a session in his trial on espionage charges. During the session, he was granted permission to address the judge,” a presenter with

Egypt’s state TV said. “After the session was adjourned, the former president blacked out and then died. His body was taken to a hospital.” The former president’s son, Abdullah Mohamed Morsi, told Reuters news agency that the family did not know the location of his body. He added that the authorities had refused to allow Morsi be buried at his family’s cemetery. Morsi had a history of health issues, including diabetes and liver and kidney disease. He had suffered from medical neglect during his imprisonment, compounded by the poor conditions in jail. There have been various reports over the years that Morsi had been mistreated and tortured in jail, with activists saying on Monday his death should be seen in context of the Egyptian authorities’ systematic isolation and mistreatment of political detainees. Human Rights Watch called the news of Morsi’s death “terrible” but “entirely predictable”, citing the government’s “failure to allow him adequate medical care”. “The government of Egypt today bears responsibility for his death, given their failure to provide him with adequate medical care or basic prisoner rights,” the group said in a statement to Al Jazeera. Trump formally kicks off his 2020 re-election campaign

US President Donald Trump formally launched his 2020 re-election campaign on Tuesday in front of a large crowd in Orlando, Florida. “We are going to keep making America great again and then we will indeed keep America great,” Trump said as he attacked his opponents and the media. “We are going to keep it better than ever before and that is why I stand before you tonight to officially launch my campaign for a second term as president of the United States,” Trump told the crowd at an arena in Orlando. The announcement comes amid calls for impeachment, continuing congressional probes into his presidency and administration and deepening divisions over his hardline immigration policies. But Trump’s speech also comes as the economy continues to grow and the Republican president maintains deep support among his base. Although Tuesday’s speech is being billed as the official beginning of Trump’s 2020 bid, the businessman-turned-politician filed the paperwork officially announcing his bid within hours of his inauguration on January 20, 2017. He has since held campaign-style rallies throughout the United States. On Tuesday, Trump’s attacks against socialism and his doubling down on conservative stances on nationalism, abortion, family, the judiciary and guns were positively received by the loyalist crowd, who often erupted in “USA” and “Make America Great” chants throughout the event. Two-and-a-half years into his tenure, Trump sees plenty of positive factors, led by a growing economy with low unemployment.

“If the economy stays strong, he is very likely to get re-elected,” said Trump confidant Newt Gingrich, a former Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives. Trump touted the economy throughout Tuesday’s speech, saying “it’s soaring to incredible new heights”. The US president also received a large round of applause when he brought his tax cuts, saying, “we’ve done so much ... with the biggest tax cut in history.” But according to an Associated Press fact check, Trump’s tax cuts are nowhere close to the biggest in US history. It’s a $1.5 trillion tax cut over 10 years. As a share of the total economy, a tax cut of that size ranks 12th, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. Former President Ronald Reagan’s 1981 cut is the biggest, followed by the 1945 rollback of taxes that financed World War II. Acting US Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan has announced the deployment of about 1,000 more troops to the Middle East for what he said were “defensive purposes”, citing concerns about a threat from Iran. The announcement on Monday came amid fears of a confrontation between the United States and Iran in the wake of suspected attacks last Thursday on two tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for the world’s oil supplies. Washington and Tehran have traded accusations over the incidents. “I have authorised approximately 1,000 additional troops for defensive purposes to address air, naval, and ground-based threats in the Middle East,” Shanahan said in a statement. “The recent Iranian attacks validate the reliable, credible intelligence we have received on hostile behaviour by Iranian forces and their proxy groups that threaten United States personnel and interests across the region,” he said. The new US deployment to the Middle East is in addition to an increase last month that brought US troops in the region up to 1,500 in response to attacks on four other tankers in May. Washington also sent warships and a Patriot missile defence battery to the region, citing unspecified threats from Iran. Also on Monday, the Pentagon released new photos it claimed showed Iran was behind the suspected tanker attacks, while Tehran set a 10-day deadline for world powers to fulfil their commitments under a multilateral nuclear deal, saying it will otherwise surpass its uranium stockpile limit mandated by the accord. Washington abandoned the deal last year and reinstated punishing economic sanctions on Iran. “The United States does not seek conflict with Iran,” Shanahan said in his statement, adding the new deployment aimed “to en-

sure the safety and welfare of our military personnel working throughout the region and to protect our national interests”. David Desroches, former director of NATO operations at the Pentagon, called the US troop move a “small measure”. He told Al Jazeera: “It’s designed to send a message, but this is nowhere near what you’d need for an invasion or a war.” Meanwhile, the Pentagon has also released additional imagery of one of the ships damaged in Thursday’s incidents that it claimed supported its accusation Iran had carried out the suspected attacks. The US accusation centres on an alleged unexploded limpet mine on the Kokuka Courageous tanker that the US said was removed by Iranian soldiers on a patrol boat. “Iran is responsible for the attack based on video evidence and the resources and proficiency needed to quickly remove the unexploded limpet mine,” the Pentagon said in a statement accompanying the new imagery. Last week, the US released a grainy black and white video it said showed Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) removing a mine, but has not provided an explanation for why the alleged removal occurred while the US military was in the area. Sudan’s protest leaders have called for nighttime demonstrations and marches in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere in the country, amid a tense standoff with the ruling military council over who should lead the transition after the removal of the autocrat Omar al-Bashir. The protest leaders on Monday said they have begun a “revolutionary escalation” to pressure the Transitional Military Council (TMC) to hand over power to civilians and condemn the crackdown on a sit-in camp earlier this month. Thousands of demonstrators who had camped outside the army headquarters in the capital for weeks were violently dispersed by gunmen in military fatigues on June 3, leaving dozens dead and hundreds wounded, according to doctors and witnesses. Protesters blame the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group for the crackdown and the TMC says it has launched an investigation. The sit-in was initially held seeking the removal of al-Bashir and later to demand that

the army generals who toppled him hand power to a civilian administration. The protest camp was dispersed after talks between the Freedom and Change alliance, the umbrella protest movement, and a transitional military council collapsed over installing civilian rule. At least 128 people have been killed since the June 3 crackdown, the majority the day the sit-in was cleared, according to doctors linked to the protest movement. Source: Al-Jazeera

THE EXPANSION OF THE UNIVERSE

INTRODUCTION

T

he expansion of the Universe is one of the most imposing discoveries of modern science. Today it is a firmly established concept and the only debate centers around the way this is taking place. It was first suggested by the general theory of relativity and is backed up by physics in the examination of the galactic spectrum; the regular movement towards the red section of their spectrum may be explained by the distancing of one galaxy from another. Thus the size of the Universe is probably constantly increasing and this increase will become bigger the further away the galaxies are from us. The speeds at which these celestial bodies are moving may, in the course of this perpetual expansion, go from fractions of the speed of light to speeds faster than this. The following verse of the Qur’an (sura 51, verse 47) where God is speaking, may perhaps be compared with modern ideas: “The heaven, We have built it with power. Verily. We are expanding it.” ‘Heaven’ is the translation of the word sama’ and this is exactly the extra-terrestrial world that is meant. ‘We are expanding it’ is the translation of the plural present participle musi’una of the verb ausa’a meaning ‘to make wider, more spacious, to extend, to expand’. Some translators who were unable to grasp the meaning of the latter provide translations that appear to me to be mistaken, e.g. “we give generously” (R. Blachere). Others sense the meaning, but are afraid to commit themselves: Ramidullah in his translation of the Qur’an talks of the widening of the heavens and space, but he includes a question mark. Finally, there are those who arm themselves with authorized scientific opinion in their commentaries and give the meaning stated here. This is true in the case of the Muntakab, a book of commentaries edited by the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Cairo. It refers to the expansion of the Universe in totally unambiguous terms. THE CONQUEST OF SPACE From this point of view, three verses of the Qur’an should command our full attention. One expresses, without any trace of ambiguity, what man should and will achieve in this field. In the other two, God refers for the sake of the unbelievers in Makka to the surprise they would have if they were able to raise themselves up to the Heavens; He alludes to a hypothesis which will not be realized for the latter. 1) The first of these verses is sura 55, verse 33: “O assembly of Jinns and Men, if you can penetrate regions of the heavens and the earth, then penetrate them! You will not penetrate them save with a Power.” The translation given here needs some explanatory comment: a) The word ‘if’ expresses in English a condition that is dependent upon a possibility and either an achievable or an unachievable hypothesis. Arabic is a language which is able to introduce a nuance into the condition which is much more explicit. There is one word to express the possibility (ida), another for the achievable hypothesis (in) and a third for the unachievable hypothesis expressed by the word (lau). The verse in question has it as an achievable hypothesis expressed by the word (in). The Qur’an therefore suggests the material possibility of a concrete realization. This subtle linguistic distinction formally rules out the purely

mystic interpretation that some people have (quite wrongly) put on this verse. b) God is addressing the spirits (jinn) and human beings (ins), and not essentially allegorical figures. c) ‘To penetrate’ is the translation of the verb nafada followed by the preposition min. According to Kazimirski’s dictionary, the phrase means ‘to pass right through and come out on the other side of a body’ (e.g. an arrow that comes out on the other side). It therefore suggests a deep penetration and emergence at the other end into the regions in question. d) The Power (sultan) these men will have to achieve this enterprise would seem to come from the All- Mighty.’ There can be no doubt that this verse indicates the possibility men will one day achieve what we today call (perhaps rather improperly) ‘the conquest of space’. One must note that the text of the Qur’an predicts not only penetration through the regions of the Heavens, but also the Earth, i.e. the exploration of its depths. 2) The other two verses are taken from sura 15, (verses 14 and 15). God is speaking of the unbelievers in Makka, as the context of this passage in the sura shows: “Even if We opened unto them a gate to Heaven and they were to continue ascending therein, they would say: our sight is confused as in drunkenness. Nay, we are people bewitched.” The above expresses astonishment at a remarkable spectacle, different from anything man could imagine. The conditional sentence is introduced here by the word lau which expresses a hypothesis that could never be realized as far as it concerned the people mentioned in these verses. When talking of the conquest of space therefore, we have two passages in the text of the Qur’an: one of them refers to what will one day become a reality thanks to the powers of intelligence and ingenuity God will give to man, and the other describes an event that the unbelievers in Makkah will never witness, hence its character of a condition never to be realized. The event will however be seen by others, as intimated in the first verse quoted above. It describes the human reactions to the unexpected spectacle that travelers in space will see: their confused sight, as in drunkenness, the feeling of being bewitched... This is exactly how astronauts have experienced this remarkable adventure since the first human space flight around the world in 1961. It is known in actual fact how once one is above the Earth’s atmosphere, the Heavens no longer have the azure appearance we see from Earth, which results from phenomena of absorption of the Sun’s light into the layers of the atmosphere. The human observer in space above the Earth’s atmosphere sees a black sky and the Earth seems to be surrounded by a halo of bluish color due to the same phenomena of absorption of light by the Earth’s atmosphere. The

Moon has no atmosphere, however, and therefore appears in its true colors against the black background of the sky. It is a completely new spectacle therefore that presents itself to men in space, and the photographs of this spectacle are well known to present-day man. Here again, it is difficult not to be impressed, when comparing the text of the Qur’an to the data of modern science, by statements that simply cannot be ascribed to the thought of a man who lived more than fourteen centuries ago.

EVOLUTION OF THE HEAVENS

Having called modern concepts on the formation of the Universe to mind, reference was made to the evolution that took place, starting with primary nebula through to the formation of galaxies, stars and (for the solar system) the appearance of planets beginning with the Sun at a certain stage of its evolution. Modern data lead us to believe that in the solar system, and more generally in the Universe itself, this evolution is still continuing. How can anybody who is aware of these ideas fail to make a comparison with certain statements found in the Qur’an in which the manifestations of divine Omnipotence are referred to. The Qur’an reminds us several times that: “(God) subjected the sun and the moon: each one runs its course to an appointed term.” This sentence is to be found in sura 13, verse 2; sura 31, verse 29; sura 35, verse 13 and sura 39, verse 5. In addition to this, the idea of a settled place is associate with the concept of a destination place in sura 36, verse 38: “The Sun runs its course to a settled place. This is the decree of the All Mighty, the Full of Knowledge.” ‘Settled place’ is the translation of the word mustaqarr and there can be no doubt that the idea of an exact place is attached to it. How do these statements fare when compared with data established by modern science? The Qur’an gives an end to the Sun for its evolution and a destination place. It also provides the Moon with a settled place. To understand the possible meanings of these

statements, we must remember what modern knowledge has to say about the evolution of the stars in general and the Sun in particular, and (by extension) the celestial bodies that automatically followed its movement through space, among them the Moon. The Sun is a star that is roughly 4.5 billion years old, according to experts in astrophysics. It is possible to (distinguish a stage in its evolution, as one can for all the stars. At present, the Sun is at an early stage, characterized by the transformation of hydrogen atoms into helium atoms. Theoretically, this present stage should last another 5.5 billion years according to calculations that allow a total of 10 billion years for the duration of the primary stage in a star of this kind. It has already been shown, in the case of these other stars, that this stage gives way to a second period characterized by the completion of the transformation of hydrogen into helium, with the resulting expansion of its external layers and the cooling of the Sun. In the final stage, its light is greatly diminished and density considerably increased; this is to be observed in the type of star known as a ‘white dwarf’. The above dates are only of interest in as far as they give a rough estimate of the time factor involved, what is worth remembering and is really the main point of the above, is the notion of an evolution. Modern data allow us to predict that, in a few billion years, the conditions prevailing in the solar system will not be the same as they are today. Like other stars whose transformations have been recorded until they reached their final stage, it is possible to predict an end to the Sun. The second verse quoted above (sura 36, verse 38) referred to the Sun running its course towards a place of its own. Modern astronomy has been able to locate it exactly and has even given it a name, the Solar Apex: the solar system is indeed evolving in space towards a point situated in the Constellation of Hercules (alpha lyrae) whose exact location is firmly established; it is moving at a speed already ascertained at something in the region of 12 miles per second. All these astronomical data deserve to be mentioned in relation to the two verses from the Qur’an. Since it is possible to state that they appear to agree perfectly with modern scientific data. Canadian soldier killed during parachute training in Bulgaria

I n t

A Canadian soldier who died in a parachuting accident while on a training mission in Bulgaria has been identified. Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said Bombardier Patrick Labrie was killed on Monday. “It’s with deep sadness that we lost a Canadian Armed Forces member yesterday on a training exercise,” he told reporters as he made his way into a federal cabinet meeting in Ottawa on Tuesday morning. Sajjan said Labrie’s next of kin had already been notified and an investigation would be launched into the incident. In a statement, the Department of National Defence said Labrie was a member of the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery based at 4th Canadian Division Support Base in Petawawa, Ont. The military said the accident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. ET in Cheshnegirovo, Bulgaria. Gen. Jonathan Vance, Canada’s chief of the defence staff, confirmed the news Tuesday morning, but he would not give any more details about the circumstances of the death. “On behalf of every member of the CAF, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Bombardier Patrick Labrie,” he wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. “Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.” Gen. Jean-Marc Lanthier, Commander Canadian Army, said the “entire military community” would feel the loss of Labrie. “I am deeply saddened by the loss of Bombardier Patrick Labrie,” Lanthier said in a press release. “Chief Warrant Officer Stu Hartnell and I extend our sincere condolences, on behalf of all ranks of the Canadian Army, to the

family and friends of Bombardier Labrie. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer also expressed his sympathies to the soldier’s family and friends in a statement posted on Twitter on Tuesday. “Saddened to learn of the death of a Canadian Armed Forces member in Exercise Swift Response in Bulgaria,” he wrote. “On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, Jill and I extend our condolences to their family and loved ones. To all members of the CAF, thank you for your service to Canada.” Labrie was taking part in “Swift Response 2019,” a United States-led joint multinational airborne field training exercise involving 5,600 troops from eight nations. The exercise is taking place at various locations in Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania from June 11 to June 24. According to the U.S. Army Europe website, the exercise aims to “validate U.S. European Command’s ability to send high readiness forces into a designated area” while advancing interoperability among NATO allies. The Department of National Defence said a Canadian Military Police investigation has been initiated. Source: ctvnews.ca

VANCOUVER -- Home sales in Metro Vancouver showed some bounce in May, but the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board says sales remain below historical averages. The board says 2,638 homes changed hands in May -- the first time this year that sales jumped above 2,000 properties in a month. It’s a 44.2 per cent rise over the 1,829 homes sold one month earlier, but a 6.9 per cent fall from the 2,833 homes sold in May 2018. Sales in May remained nearly 23 per cent below the 10-year May sales average and the lowest for May since 2000. The number of listed homes across Metro Vancouver also edged upward 2.3 per cent between April and May, to 14,685, marking the highest number of properties for sale in the region since September 2014. Real estate board data shows the ratio of sales to active listings averaged 18 per cent for all property types last month. The ratio dropped to just over 14 per cent for detached homes and remained at, or just above, 20 per cent for townhomes and apartments. Generally, analysts expect prices to drop when the ratio falls below 12 per cent, while a sustained ratio above 20 per cent can push prices up. The composite benchmark price for all residential homes in Metro Vancouver is currently $1,006,400, an 8.9 per cent tumble in one year, a 3.4 per cent skid over the last six months and a 0.4 per cent slip since April.

Ashley Smith, the board’s president blames government policies for continuing sluggish housing sales. “High home prices and mortgage qualification issues caused by the federal government’s B20 stress test remain significant factors behind the reduced demand that the market is experiencing today,” Smith says in a statement. Sales of apartment condominiums slipped most dramatically since May 2018, falling 12.9 per cent. The benchmark price for condominiums is $664,200, a 7.3 per cent decrease over the same period and a slip of two per cent in six months. Detached home sales dropped 1.4 per cent since May 2018, while the $1,421,900 benchmark price is 11.5 per cent lower since then and marks a 5.4 per cent decrease in six months. Only attached homes showed a modest 0.6 per cent sales increase over 12 months and prices climbed marginally over the last months. But overall, the real estate board says the $779,400 benchmark price is down 7.6 per cent from May 2018. The real estate board covers 15 cities, municipalities and regions across Metro Vancouver, from Vancouver to Whistler, the Sunshine Coast, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Richmond and South Delta. B.C. premier disappointed by approval of Trans Mountain expansion

B.C. Premier John Horgan says he’s disappointed by the federal approval of the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project, a sentiment echoed by environmentalists across the province. But Horgan added that Ottawa has the authority to give the green light, and he’ll focus on making sure B.C. can protect its territory from the impact of a spill. “I believe it’s my job as the premier of British Columbia to always be vigilant to protect those things that matter to British Columbians, and I’ll continue to do that, “ he said. Horgan spoke just minutes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet announced that they have given the project the go-ahead. The expansion is designed to carry nearly a million barrels of oil each day from Alberta’s oilpatch to the pipeline terminal in Burnaby. Last month, the B.C. Court of Appeal ruled against the provincial government’s proposal for environmental legislation that would effectively stop the expansion project. The proposed law would have allowed the province to limit the flow of “heavy oil” into B.C., but the court said that would be in direct conflict with federal jurisdiction over interprovincial pipelines. B.C. officials have said they are appealing that court decision. Environment Minister George Heyman said Tuesday that he continues to oppose the expansion. “We know that British Columbians continue to be deeply concerned about the consequences of a sevenfold increase in tanker traffic in the Salish Sea,” Heyman told reporters. “We will not abandon our responsibility to protect our land and our water.” And the NDP government is getting support from south of the border, where Washington’s Gov. Jay Inslee said he was alarmed and deeply disappointed by Ottawa’s decision, and ready to stand with Horgan. But the B.C. Opposition is urging the government to give up the fight. “Today’s decision will bring jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars to local communities along the pipeline route. It will also provide an increased supply of refined and refinable product in the line,” B.C. Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson said. “It’s a great day for B.C. and a great day for Canada.” This is the second time the cabinet has approved the project, but the last approval was nullified by the Federal Court of Appeal in 2018. The court said there had been inadequate consultation with Indigenous groups and insufficient environmental review.

Coastal First Nations said Tuesday that they plan to appeal the cabinet decision once again. Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart, who spoke alongside Indigenous leaders opposed to the project, said the city would do “everything in our power” to support local First Nations in their court battles. Tuesday’s decision to move forward was immediately slammed by environmentalists, who suggested it was ironic to approve an oil and gas project less than 24 hours after declaring a national climate emergency. “This is like declaring war on cancer and then announcing a campaign to promote smoking,” Patrick McCully, the climate and energy program director at Rainforest Action Network, said in a news release. Margot Venton, the nature director for environmental law charity Ecojustice, said she saw no justification for the decision. “The reality is that the government can put Canada on the path to a safe climate future and fulfil its legal responsibility to protect endangered killer whales, or it can push this pipeline through. It cannot do both,” Venton said in a news release. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May slammed the decision, describing it in a statement as “breathtaking cynicism and hypocrisy” a day after parliament passed a Liberal motion to declare a climate emergency. She said the prime minister’s promise to invest profits from the pipeline into clean energy would “fool no one.” “If you’re serious about fighting climate change, you invest public funds in renewable energy. You don’t invest them in a bitumen pipeline,” she said. “And there’s no guarantee that this pipeline will ever turn a profit anyway — in fact it almost certainly won’t.” Some B.C. business leaders, on the other hand, applauded the news. “It is high time that we move forward, collectively as Canadians, to build this infrastructure and get our natural resources to international markets,” said Greater Vancouver Board of Trade president and CEO Iain Black. Mosques in Turkey hold funeral prayers in Mohamed Morsi’s honour

Thousands gather to pay their respects to the former Egyptian president who died in a Cairo court on Monday. Mosques across Turkey are holding funeral prayers for Mohamed Morsi, the former Egyptian president who collapsed and died during a court session in Cairo on Monday. Turkey’s religious authority, the Diyanet, called for the absentee funeral prayers to be held on Tuesday throughout the country’s 81 provinces. A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood group, Morsi won Egypt’s first free

presidential election in 2012, a year after an uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. His term in office was short-lived, however, as he was overthrown and imprisoned in a July 2013 military coup led by Egypt’s then-defence minister and current president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Turkey’s ruling AK Party supported Morsi’s government and many Brotherhood members and supporters have fled to Turkey since its activities were banned in Egypt in 2013. been residing in Turkey since the Arab Spring began and people are here to give support for Morsi’s cause,” Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu, reporting from Istanbul’s Fatih Mosque, said. While thousands joined in prayer in Istanbul, in the capital, Ankara, about 500 people prayed in a central street, halting traffic outside the Egyptian embassy. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to attend an absentee funeral later on Tuesday, along with members of human rights groups and political dissidents. Speaking at a rally ahead of a June 23 re-run

Detained in Dubai has released a statement from Dua Khalid Al-Shweiki, one of the two sisters who have escaped alleged abuse in Saudi Arabia, fleeing from their family while in Turkey; for the first time providing details of their traumatic life under religiously strict parents and a harsh patriarchal system. CEO Radha Stirling commented, “I have been in continuous communication with Dua and Dalal since first learning of their plight. It is heartbreaking to hear what they have endured since childhood; constant bullying, intolerance, physical, verbal and psychological abuse from family members, peers, and the authorities. Their resilience is inspiring, and the courage in their bid for freedom is tremendous. We are doing all we can to ensure that these young women will find asylum in a welcoming country as soon as possible. It is urgent, and their lives are in danger every moment they remain in limbo.” Dua Al-Shweiki, 22, wrote the statement with her sister Dalal, 21, explaining that the two suffered a lifetime of mistreatment and abuse. “My parents were rigid hard-liners,” she wrote, “They forced us to wear hijab and full-face cover (niqab), when I was just 11 years old. I remember one day when I was a child I felt so hot, so I took off the hijab… and I was subjected to a harsh beating until they took me to the hospital since my mother beat me on the head with a wooden stick.” Dua said that she was expelled from school as a teenager, and the administration told her family that she was gay, “My mother beat me, threw all my clothes and broke everything in my room.” The issue of Dua’s sexuality became a frequent source of speculation and threats in later years, as her family tried to force her into marriages she did not want. She also wrote of her sister’s victimization at the hands of Saudi Arabia’s notorious religious police, “One day my sister Dalal left the university, and was stopped by a man working with the “prohibition of vice” as he claimed. He pulled her to the car and tried to rape her, but my sister resisted and pushed herself out of the car as it was moving. This event was the worst that has ever happened to my sister and me throughout our whole lives.” Finally, Dua and Dalal concluded that their only chance at freedom and a meaningful life was to escape. “We can never possibly live with our family, and I know that living with them will end up with us being killed. They have robbed us out of our dreams, our

ambitions and our childhood, and now they want our youth” Doa wrote. The sisters ran away from their family while in Turkey, and began appealing for help via Twitter, but even these appeals were hindered when their Twitter account was abruptly suspended. “Dua and Dalal immediately set up a new account, and it too was almost instantly suspended,” Stirling says, “This happened several times, but fortunately we were able to establish contact before their latest suspension. Their family possess the sisters’ passports, and it may be that they are reporting Dua and Dalal’s Twitter accounts as fake in order to close them. We hope Twitter is not suspending the accounts in deference to Saudi investors who own a considerable share in the company; but even the account we set up for them has been locked for dubious reasons, so there is a fear that there may be an attempt to silence their story.” Stirling said that the sisters will be applying with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, and that Detained in Dubai is assisting them in their pursuit of asylum in every way possible. The complete statement of Dua and Dalal Al-Shweiki is reproduced below: I am Dua Khalid Al-Shweiki, 22 years old, from Saudi Arabia – Jeddah. My sister Dalal Khalid Al-Shweiki is 21 years old. I, Doa, have been bullied ever since I was young, by everyone; my parents, at school, my teachers, my female friends. I never lived my childhood, I don’t even think that I had a childhood. My parents were rigid hardliners, they forced us to wear hijab and full-face cover (niqab), when I was just 11 years old. I remember one day when I was a child I felt so hot, so I removed off the hijab from my head. My brother told my mother and I was subjected to harsh beating until they took me to the hospital since my mother beat me on the head with a wooden stick. There were problems between my mother and father every day, and when my mother was angry with my father, she would beat us for no reason except to vent off her anger. I tried to tell everyone close to us, but they never believed us, and they told my family which made things worse… So, we kept silent. My sister and I were both sexually harassed by my older brother. And when I tried to tell my mother, she smiled at me and said that this was impossible. She just dismissed it so simply, and when I tried to tell her again, she was very angry and so I kept silent. This

of Istanbul’s mayoral election, Erdogan denounced those who stood by as Morsi was “tortured” in prison. “I am condemning the Western world and humanity, who watched Morsi taken down in a coup and tortured in a prison cell,” Erdogan told a crowd of cheering supporters in Turkey’s largest city.

Short-lived presidency

At the time of his death, Morsi, 67, faced a host of legal charges, which he, along with many human rights groups and independent observers, said were politically motivated. Egypt’s government has dismissed accusations that Morsi was badly treated. He was buried in eastern Cairo on Tuesday alongside other senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Family members were permitted to attend the funeral, although authorities refused to grant permission for a burial in Morsi’s home province of Sharqiya, his son, Ahmed, said in a post on Facebook. Turkey’s main opposition leader lashed out at the circumstances surrounding Morsi’s

burial, saying his party would have wished Morsi to be buried with a presidential ceremony. “He lost his life in a courtroom. We wish God’s mercy on him. We would have wished Mohamed Morsi to be buried with a presidential ceremony,” Kemal Kilicdaroglu of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) said. “He was buried secretly, in a hurry, in the presence of only his family. I would like to express that I do not find this right in terms of our democracy, culture, beliefs and morals,” Kilicdaroglu added. Source: Al Jazeera

Detained In Dubai: Saudi sisters seek asylum after a lifetime of abuse is because (in our culture) whenever a woman is harassed or raped, she would carry the whole burden of the issue, and she ends up being beaten for what the male did to her, or she ends up being killed. When I was 16 years old, I was subjected to racism and psychological abuse at school by the teachers because of my hair and because of my appearance. I was exposed to heavy bullying by the students, and when I told my mother what happened at school, she never stood by me, and always took their side… I have no idea why. They put so much pressure on me to give up school, because they could not expel me, so I moved to another school. When I moved to another school nothing changed and the situation got worse. The teachers in my old school communicated with the teachers of my new school, and they smeared my reputation, until they expelled me for no reason! They told my family that I was homosexual and my mother beat me, threw all my clothes and broke everything in my room. When I was 18 years old and my sister was 17, they tried to force us to marry but we always refused. When the men came to see me and my sister for marriage, we would tell them that we were compelled into marriage and that we totally refuse to get married. We were then beaten every time we said this! We succeeded in entering university after long discussions with my parents, since my father is against the very concept of university for women. He always said that if a woman studied at the university, this would be an act of big generosity from her family, since women are only suited for the house, the husband and for bearing children. For him, work and study, are a no-no! When I tried to argue that his thinking is wrong, he would become very angry, and tell me that this kind of crooked thinking is only in the West, and not in our religion. One day my sister Dalal left the university, and was stopped by a man working with the “prohibition of vice” as he claimed. He pulled her to the car and tried to rape her, but my sister resisted and pushed herself out of the car as it was moving. This event was the worst that has ever happened to my sister and me throughout our whole lives. When we tried to report the man to the police, the policeman verbally abused us over the phone.

We were so sad and angry, but could not tell our parents anything and we could not do nothing but keep silent. My sister Dalal was always severely beaten by my mother, and sometimes even when my sister was sleeping, my mother would enter her room for no reason and pull her by her hair and muffle her breath so no one would hear her as she beat her. I tried to tell my father but he never responded. Recently, I, Duaa, have been threatened by the university and they expelled me because of my hair and my appearance. When I tried to communicate this to the Ministry of Education, the university director threatened me and my father that if I did not keep silent, she would file against us a “homosexuality” case. My father never stood by my side, and he deprived me of studying. He told me that I had grown up and that I should marry, and that I’ll never be able to refuse, if my father liked the man proposing to me. He tried to force me to marry a man who is over 50 years old, already married to two women and with three children. When I refused, he tried to convince me that the man had a lot of money, and that women do not care much about men; they only wanted money and children. He told me that my refusal to marry expels me out of the religion of Islam! He threatened me that I would never live independently, and that if I even dared to think about it, he would kill me. We can never possibly live with our family, and I know that living with them will end up with us being killed. They have robbed us out of our dreams, our ambitions and our childhood, and now they want our youth. If they succeed in returning me to Saudi Arabia, I will be tried by the government and then killed by my family. Source: www.mynewsdesk.com/

Iran slams Saudi Arabia over tanker attack allegations

Tehran blames Riyadh’s own ‘misguided approach’ for causing current tensions in the region. Iran has accused its main regional rival Saudi Arabia of adopting a “militaristic, crisisbased approach” after Riyadh said Tehran was behind last week’s attack on two tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. The comments by the Iranian foreign ministry on Monday came a day after Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), called on the international community to take a “decisive stand” over the attacks - but said the kingdom did not

want a war in the region.“But we won’t hesitate to deal with any threat to our people, our sovereignty, our territorial integrity and our vital interests,” MBS told Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq al-Awsat. US President Donald Trump backed MBS’s claims, but Tehran has vehemently denied any involvement in the reported attacks and hinted that Washington itself could have done it to pile pressure on the Islamic Republic on top of economic sanctions. On Monday, Abbas Mousavi, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, blamed Riyadh’s “wrong policies” for causing the escalating

regional tensions, which have caused a spike in oil prices and concerns about conflict in the region.“Salman’s charges against Iran in various situations is a continuation of Riyadh’s misguided approach and attempts at escaping the problems brought on by their own wrong policies,” Mousavi said, according to state TV. “Saudi Arabia has poured out the wealth of its people and countries in the region with a lack of proper understanding of the region’s variables with a militaristic, crisis-based approach,” he added. Mousavi said the kingdom lacked a “proper

understanding of the region’s dynamics” and followed “an approach based on militarism and causing crises and tension”. Source: Al Jazeera And News Agencies

Ex-leader appears in public for the first time since being overthrown as prosecutor moves to begin his corruption trial. Sudan’s former President Omar al-Bashir has appeared in public for the first time since his overthrow by the military following months of mass protests against his 30-year-long autocratic rule. Dressed in a white robe and turban, the toppled leader was seen on Sunday as he was escorted under heavy guard from a maximum security prison in Sudan’s capital Khartoum to the prosecutor’s office. There, prosecutors informed him he faced charges of “possessing foreign currency and acquiring suspicious and illicit wealth”, according to the official SUNA news agency. He was given one week to raise objections,

questioned on additional unspecified corruption charges, and taken back to Kobar prison. If al-Bashir does not appeal, he could appear in court as early as next week, Sudan’s acting Chief Prosecutor Alwaleed Sayed Ahmed said on Saturday. In Khartoum, the moves against the 75-yearold former president triggered derision and scepticism from critics who dismissed it as an attempt by Sudan’s new military rulers to deflect attention from a recent bloody crackdown on protesters, as well as its reluctance to cede power to a civilian-led transitional administration. They also questioned the likelihood of al-Bashir receiving a fair trial in Sudan or being held accountable for the most egregious of charges against him. The former leader, who came to power in a

coup in 1989, is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide relating to abuses by Sudanese forces in the country’s Darfur region between 2003 and 2008. Instead, al-Bashir’s first trial looks set to be on charges of violating a decree he imposed in February as part of an effort to quell antigovernment protests sparked by rising food prices and a currency crisis. At the time, as protests gathered pace across the country, al-Bashir had imposed a state of emergency and made it illegal to carry more than $3,000 in foreign currency. But shortly after he was overthrown on April 11, the Transitional Military Council (TMC), which replaced the former leader, said security forces had seized more than

$113m worth in cash in three currencies from his residence. If al-Bashir is found guilty of violating the emergency decree, he could face at least 10 years in prison. Source: Al Jazeera.com

Scepticism as Sudan moves to put Omar al-Bashir on trial

Evidence suggests MBS, other top Saudi officials liable for Khashoggi murder: UN expert

Evidence suggests Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and other senior Saudi officials are liable for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a United Nations rights investigator said on Wednesday. There was no immediate reaction from Riyadh which was sent the 100-page report in advance ─ but the kingdom has regularly denied accusations that the prince was involved. Agnes Callamard, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, called for countries to widen sanctions to include the Crown Prince and his personal

assets, until and unless he can prove he has no responsibility. “It is the conclusion of the Special Rapporteur that Mr. Khashoggi has been the victim of a deliberate, premeditated execution, an extrajudicial killing for which the state of Saudi Arabia is responsible under international human rights law,” Callamard said in her report based on a six-month investigation. Callamard went to Turkey earlier this year with a team of forensic and legal experts and said she received evidence from Turkish authorities. “There is credible evidence, warranting

further investigation of high-level Saudi officials’ individual liability, including the Crown Prince’s,” she said.“Indeed, this human rights inquiry has shown that there is sufficient credible evidence regarding the responsibility of the Crown Prince demanding further investigation,” she added, urging the UN secretary-general to establish an international probe.Khashoggi, a critic of the prince and a Washington Post columnist, was last seen at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct 2 where he was to receive papers ahead of his wedding. JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Israelis will take part in a conference in Bahrain next week that is part of the United States’ Middle East peace plan. “An important conference will soon be held in Bahrain and Israelis will of course participate,” Netanyahu said at an event in Tel Aviv. US President Donald Trump’s administration organised

the conference, which is to be held on June 25 and 26 in Manama, Bahrain for the unveiling of the economic component of the US peace plan. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner has been drafting the long-awaited plan, but it has been rejected in advance by the Palestinians, who expect the proposals to heavily favour Israel. The plan is aimed at providing economic opportunities for

the Palestinians, but Kushner has hinted it will not endorse international calls for the creation of a Palestinian state. “We welcome American attempts to provide regional solutions for a better future,” Netanyahu said. Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Monday that Israel would be represented at the conference, without giving further details. Source: dawn.com

Ten reasons NOT to vote for the Trudeau Liberals in October

The Canadian Charger 1. NAFTA The new NAFTA / USMCA agreement was signed on November 30, 2018 and proclaimed as “a good deal for Canada.” Yet the punitive US tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel exports are still in place. The business community is being left in limbo. Five months (and counting) later, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canada won’t ratify the USMCA until US tariffs are lifted. Since the Liberal government agreed to a six-year review of the USMCA, the US will have plenty of leverage over us: does “Agree to our stipulations, or we’ll withdraw from the agreement” sound familiar? 2. CHINA AND VENEZUELA Justin Trudeau came to power with a Canada-China free trade agreement near the top of his wish list, but despite continued efforts to negotiate one, our relationship with the PRC is actually worse now than before the Trudeau Liberals came to power. A case in point: After purchasing $2.7 billion worth of Canadian canola products in 2018 (approximately 40% of our total production) China abruptly banned further canola imports, claiming unproven “quality” issues. Until 2018 China was the largest single market for Canadian canola; its sudden (and politically motivated) decision poses a significant economic threat to our farming industry. Overall, canola exports contribute approximately $26.7 billion annually to our economy and the industry employs more than 250,000 people, according to Brian Innes, VP of public affairs for the Canola Council of Canada (CCC). “The impact is huge,” he said. “To put it in perspective, agri-food is one in seven jobs in the country, and canola is the largest source of farm income in agriculture, so canola is a big part of what we do … And most of what we are able to do … comes from exports.” Meanwhile, Venezuela has become another Trudeau foreign policy débacle that’s unnecessarily costing the Canadian taxpayer money. Despite Canada being a founding member of the Lima group – supposedly promoting democracy in Venezuela – our government has been anything but transparent in revealing which opposition groups it supports. Back in 2010, Eva Golinger, America’s foremost researcher on funding to the Venezuelan opposition, claimed that Canada was playing a growing role in that troubled country. According to a 2010 report from the Spanish NGO Fride, “Canada is the third most important provider of democracy assistance” to Venezuela after the US and Spain. 3. CANNABIS In a big rush to meet his self-proclaimed deadline, Justin Trudeau failed to adequately address many concerns about cannabis legalization that were raised months, even years, ahead by municipalities, law enforcement agencies, employers, scientists and doctors. In mid-October 2018, government officials confirmed they have no conclusive test to determine if someone is driving high,

leaving front line law enforcement in limbo. Several police forces across the country now refuse to use government-approved test devices. Moreover, the Trudeau government has not addressed safety concerns raised by employers, workers and Indigenous communities. There have been no explanations as to how the Liberal plan will keep marijuana out of the hands of children and profits out of the hands of criminals. 4. CLIMATE CHANGE Prime Minister Trudeau has kept his promise to fight climate change with a carbon tax. The federal carbon pollution rate will be $20 per ton this year, and rise $10 per ton annually until it reaches $50 per ton in 2022. But it is far from an equitable solution, since the poor spend more of their disposable income on fuel, heat and groceries than the rich. Rebates are issued long after the fact. Because too little time was spent consulting the provinces, Trudeau faces possible carbon tax court challenges from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, with more likely in the near future. 5. FIRST NATIONS Shortly after becoming Prime Minister in 2015, Trudeau promised a radically new relationship with Indigenous and First Nations peoples all across Canada. But the recipients of his good intention have little or nothing to show for it. In November 2017, then Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott announced Ottawa would provide $170,000 for a feasibility study on a longterm treatment centre in Grassy Narrows, as well further funding to “design, build and operate” such a facility. It also promised a similar treatment centre for the Wabaseemoong, or Whitedog nation, which has also suffered the health effects of chronic mercury poisoning. Construction of the proposed 20-bed Grassy Narrows facility was to have begun late in 2018, but no ground has yet been broken. Media reports said that in December Minister Philpot held discussions with the community and that the project was supposed to get underway around June of this year. So far nothing has been confirmed. Grassy Narrows Chief Rudy Turtle said the community must put the money into a trust to ensure that future governments don’t suddenly remove it. Justin Trudeau’s mocking quip to protestor Lana Goldberg, “Thank you very much for your donation” as security was escorting her out of a $1,500-a-plate Liberal fundraiser at the Laurier Club on

March 27, gave Canadians a “true colors” glimpse of a careful, crafty and entitled politician who casually claims “concern” over what Canadians struggle with in their daily lives, but doesn’t act on it. Ms. Goldberg was attempting to raise awareness about mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows. The First Nations community has battled with mercury poisoning in its local water supply for decades after an upstream pulp and paper mill dumped thousands of pounds of effluent into the English-Wabigoon river system during the 1960s and early 1970s. Ms. Goldberg was represented an advocacy group called Free Grassy Narrows, working to secure a long-term care facility for victims of mercury poisoning. 6. PIPELINES After promising pipelines to relieve pressure on Alberta, whose oil producers are forced to sell crude at a discount due to lack of shipping capacity to serve the US market, there are still no new pipelines in sight. In June 2018 the Trudeau government passed Bill C-69, creating a new Impact Assessment Agency and replacing the National Energy Board with an agency called Canadian Energy Regulator. The intention was to introduce new timelines and concrete steps by which oil companies and governments could move new energy projects forward. But Chris Bloomer, president of the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association disputed government claims that the new legislation will speed up the review and approval process. “We cannot see that timelines will improve. We expect them to be longer,” he told the Commons Environment Committee. He also predicted that the federal plan would only increase difficulties and uncertainties. “Instead, it introduces a new regulatory agency and unique new processes and information requirements that have never been tested.” He continued, “Science and fact-based assessments can now be obscured by the layering … of assessments that are ill-defined, fluid and open to potential strategies of delay and obfuscation … by groups opposed to any project.” Even prior to Bill C-69, which the pipeline industry says will stop any future projects, this Liberal government killed two major routes. Northern Gateway was cancelled, despite regulatory approval, when Trudeau declared a ban on oil tanker traffic off the British Columbia coast. Of course, that hasn’t stopped American tankers from shipping Alaskan oil through those same

Canadian resource development is a slap in the face to the tens of thousands of Canadians who depend on these good-paying jobs.” The Liberals provided Canada Summer Jobs funding to a number of organizations that are actively trying to shut down Canada’s oil and gas sector, including the Dogwood Initiative, Tides Canada, West Coast Environmental Law, the Pembina Institute and the Sierra Club. “This just goes to show who the Trudeau Liberals are really focused on helping.

They’d much rather cater to their elitist friends on the cocktail circuit and the radical environmental lobby than support hardworking men and women in the oil and gas sector. No amount of lip-service is going to change that,” said MP Barlow. “The Trudeau Liberals need to stand with Canada’s oil and gas workers, revoke Summer Jobs funding to these anti-energy activist groups and immediately get to work on the construction of the Trans Mountain Expansion in Burnaby,” concluded MP Barlow.

waters. He also killed off Energy East by abruptly changing the rules. Suddenly Energy East was told they would have to account for both upstream and downstream emissions; according to Trans Canada Pipelines that was the deal-breaker. 7. SNC-LAVALIN Testifying at the House of Commons Justice Committee on Feb. 27, 2019, former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould said: “For a period of approximately four months, between September and December of 2018, I experienced a consistent and sustained effort by many people within the government to seek to politically interfere in the exercise of prosecutorial discretion in my role as the attorney general of Canada.” After weeks of obfuscating, prevaricating and deflecting around Ms. Wilson-Raybould’s concerns, Trudeau was asked if he intended to apologize for what unfolded in the SNC-Lavalin case. Instead, he continued to emphasize his belief that there was “no inappropriate pressure,” adding as an apparent afterthought, “I’m obviously reflecting on lessons learned through this.” 8. MCCALLUM AND DION Many mistakes that have marred the Trudeau government’s first term can be attributed to lack of experience. Not only Justin Trudeau himself, but many of his closest advisers were relatively new to the game. Yet the Prime Minister apparently found it easy to dispatch two senior Liberals who had solid experience “in the trenches.” John McCallum was exiled to the role of ambassador to China and Stephane Dion was sent to the political outfield as Canada’s representative to the European Union. They are undoubtedly useful in such roles, but needed far more at home. 9. JANE PHILPOTT and JODY WILSONRAYBOULD When two high-profile cabinet women, Minister of Veterans Affairs (and former Attorney General) Jody Wilson-Raybould and Treasury Board head Jane Philpott, criticized him for lack of leadership, Trudeau expelled them from Caucus. The resulting vacuum is all too evident as there is no one to fill the huge spaces they left. 10. REFUGEES It has long been raised at every level of government that most, if not all, of Canada’s major refugee resettlement cities – Toronto in particular – do not have adequate social service, health and housing facilities to accommodate the refugees that Prime Minister Trudeau has welcomed into the country. While it is indeed a noble cause to help those in need, and in danger for their lives in many cases, it is simply poor planning and inefficient prioritization to neglect the basicneeds issues – both human and material -required to properly integrate these people into Canadian society. These are only ten reasons but unfortunately there are many more. Each one profoundly affects all Canadians as we look toward the challenges of the upcoming October election. Now is the time to think about their impact and how it will affect our voting decisions. www.thecanadiancharger.com

Trudeau Liberals funding radical anti-oil and gas lobby organizationsthrough Canada Summer Jobs program OTTAWA, ON – The same week the federal government is expected to approve the Trans Mountain Expansion project, the Trudeau Liberals need to explain why they are funding radical anti-oil and gas lobby organizations, said John Barlow, Conservative Shadow Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, and Labour. “Justin Trudeau has made it clear that he wants to ‘phase-out’ Canada’s oil and gas sector,” said MP Barlow. “Providing funding to organizations whose entire reason for existence is to shut down

Muslim women in Quebec facing increased hate amid Bill 21 debate: advocates By Maham Abedi

In the roughly one-and-a-half months since Quebec’s legislature tabled a bill to ban public sector employees from wearing religious symbols at work, advocates say Muslim women in the province are facing increased incidents of hate. Justice Femme, a Montreal-based group that offers legal support to women in the province, says it has received more reports of hate-fueled incidents since the March 28 tabling than ever before. Hanadi Saad, the president of the Justice Femme, told Global News that the organization has received 40 reports of such incidents since then. She noted the number

was “minimal” prior to Coalition Avenir Québec’s election, but has been steadily growing in the last few months. “They report to our organization via Facebook, by phone, email and through our website,” she explained. “We received 40 reports. It’s the first time since the creation of Justice Femme that we had this number in two months and that’s really not good news for us at all.” The reports included 12 cases of cyberbullying, which resulted in some women removing their photos from social media. There were two reports of women being refused early childhood education jobs on the basis of their hijabs. In several other cases, women said they were harassed

or intimidated at work. There were also four cases of physical assault — in two cases, individuals attempted to rip off hijabs, and in one case a woman was spat on. Saad noted that many women she speaks with do not report to police or speak publicly. “People don’t want to report, because they don’t trust the system anymore,” Saad said. “They’re saying the government is [creating] laws to let people discriminate.” The proposed ban on symbols such as hijabs, turbans and kippas would apply to several professions — including teachers, judges, police officers, prison guards and Crown prosecutors — and has been the subject of criticism for several

months, even before it was introduced by the Coalition Avenir Québec. Hearings into Quebec’s secularism bill have been taking place at the legislature committee studying the proposed law, and have at times turned tense. Last Thursday, former senator Celine Hervieux-Payette drew a connection between the Muslim headscarf, female genital mutilation and forced marriage. And earlier in the week, another supporter of the bill, Djemila Benhabib, told the hearings that any woman who refuses to take off her hijab to work in the public service is a “fundamentalist.” That prompted Legault to appeal for people to be “careful with labels.”

India continued their World Cup dominance over rivals Pakistan with a rainaffected 89-run victory as a highly anticipated match came to a strange end at Old Trafford. Pakistan, chasing 337, collapsed to 1666 before a rain delay saw their target revised to another 136 runs required from 30 balls - a near-impossible task.

India, who have never lost a World Cup match to Pakistan, earlier posted an impressive 336-5, led by Rohit Sharma’s fine 140 and 77 from Virat Kohli. Only Mohammad Amir (3-47) impressed with the ball for Pakistan and their runchase crumbled in front of a vociferous crowd, before the rain delay added further confusion.

Drug shortages in Canada: Why they happen and what you can do about it?

By Maham Abedi It’s not entirely unusual for Canadians see warnings emerge over drug shortages in the country. In March, for example, Bladder Cancer Canada’s medical advisory board said that it is currently facing a shortage of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin. The organization itself was told of the shortage by drug manufacturer Merck Canada in November 2018. Merck is the only supplier of the medicine in the country. So what happens when necessary drugs, such as BCG, are in limited supply? Here’s a look at why drug shortages happen, and what Canadians who need those drugs can do about it. What’s happening with the BCG shortage? Bladder Cancer Canada explained in a release that it is working to mitigate the effects of the shortage of BCG, which is a “standard of care for many patients” with that form of cancer. It has produced guidelines for doctors on how to handle the shortage, telling them to “closely monitor” their supply and put conservation strategies in place. The guidelines also include a list of alternate treatments that can be considered by medical professionals. Bladder cancer, which is the fifth most common cancer in Canada, is the most expensive to treat. The organization says it is currently waiting on Health Canada, as the public agency has final discussions with a potential second supplier for the medicine. In an email to Global News, Health Canada said the expected end of the shortage is December and it is working on finding an alternate supplier. “Health Canada has received a submission for market approval (New Drug Submission) of a new BCG product,” the statement read. “Health Canada expects to make a decision on this submission in fall 2019, after the Department has completed a thorough evaluation of the scientific evidence to support the quality, safety and effectiveness of the product.” Monitoring drug shortages in Canada The public health agency added that it plays an “active role” in resolving issues related to shortages, alongside interest groups, provincial and territorial governments, health care professionals and manufacturers.

As of March 2017, legislation requires drug manufacturers to report drug shortages, current or anticipated, to the third-party Drug Shortages Canada database — at least six months ahead of time, or within five days of learning about it.

Health Canada must also be notified if a drug is discontinued in Canada. Paul Grootendorst, a University of Toronto associate professor who researches economics of the pharmaceutical industry, explained to Global News that shortages typically emerge when generic drugs are priced low. The low prices often make drugs more popular, while producing them becomes less profitable, he noted. “It’s less profitable to invest in productive capacity, such as manufacturing capabilities,” Grootendorst said. He added that there are other things — such as inspections, difficulty accessing ingredients, and international demands for drugs — that can impact production and cause a low drug supply.

A growing problem?

There have been concerns raised recently that drug shortages are a growing problem in Canada. Last year, a group of Alberta pharmacists warned the government about shortages of common medications, including those to control seizures and diabetes. Eid Festivities By: Asma Shums A week later, I am sure all of us are still enjoying Eid festivities. We are still indulging in feasts, new outfits, meeting our families and friends. As summer approaches, these are estimated to be regular meetings where we barbecue and catch up on each other’s lives. These events, for some, are not a joyous gathering but instead a place where they feel anxiety and stress. It is an event where people have to brace themselves in fear of judgement from family about their lives. Let us complement instead of comment this season. I am sure we all mean well for our friends and family and experience love and care towards them. There are always ways of conveying our thoughts and opinions that do not undermine the feelings of others. Words once spoken cannot be taken back. We need to be careful of them, how we phrase them, and how it will be perceived by someone

else. We are all different people with different things that bother us and touch base with our insecurities. We have different lifestyles, hobbies, and interests that we hold dear and would feel hurt if they were criticized by someone close to us. Even though we might have the right words to say and we say at the wrong time, the results defy our intentions. In some cases, pharmacists can find a workaround — such as offering fractional doses — but many other patients are sent back to their doctor for additional lab work and consultations. should keep those feelings in mind before we bad-mouth or disrespect the others. Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become deeds. Watch your deeds. They become habits. Watch your habits. They become character. Character is everything. Our words create action. Our words can create intimacy or separation. With our words we can motivate ourselves to do things we never thought we could do, and our words can also move others to step forward into their own personal power so they can be of service to their community. Words can calm us or excite us. Words can actually change the direction of a nation. So watch what you think and be aware of the words that come from your thoughts, and the actions that follow your words. A habit is an action we do regularly, often without thinking. It’s just what we do. If we do an action and it feels good or we get the results we want, then we often repeat it over and over. Some habits are beneficial and some can be detrimental. If it’s detrimen-

tal, it’s usually called an addiction. If it’s beneficial, it’s called a good discipline. Our day is full of small little “habits” that we do unconsciously. Some of us are habitually tidy, or messy, or early, or late, or rude, or courteous, or happy, or angry. These are all habitual ways of being. So, our habits become who we are, or they become our character. When we change our thoughts and actions, we show our community as loving and actually as a region of peace. Let us cultivate the art of good etiquette and embody it in our life. We should strive to be a community of pleasant people, tolerable and open to speech and criticism, and more importantly show consideration for other human beings. Asma Shums <asmashums@gmail.com>

Trans Mountain pipeline expansion: Five things to know about the project 1. What is it? getting more oil to the west coast will open Bill C-69 is the federal There is an existing, 1,150-km pipeline carrying crude and refined oil products from Alberta’s oilsands to a terminal in Burnaby, B.C. It transports about 300,000 barrels of oil a day, with refined products including gasoline, diesel and jet fuel making up about 15 per cent of its flows and crude oil the remainder. The refined products are used mainly in B.C.. About half the crude is sent to Washington state refineries on a different pipeline, and the rest mostly goes to Burnaby. Less than 10 per cent is loaded onto oil tankers. In 2018, 53 oil tankers used the Westridge Marine Terminal, where the pipeline ends. The expansion, first proposed in 2012, would build another pipeline roughly parallel to the existing one, and be able to carry another 590,000 barrels a day, all of it diluted bitumen. It will require about 980 kilometres of new pipeline and reactivating 193 kilometres of existing pipeline that has not been used for many years. There will also be 12 new pumping stations along the route and 19 new storage tanks at terminals in both Alberta and B.C. The expansion will use the existing right of way for 73 per cent of the route, and 16 per cent will use right-of-ways granted for other infrastructure including telecommunications, hydro lines and highways. Eleven per cent of the route requires a new right of way. 2. Why do proponents want it expanded? One of the most common reasons given is that Canada’s existing pipeline infrastructure is at capacity, and for Canadian oil producers to expand production, they need either more pipelines or more rail capacity. The lack of ability to get products out is having some impact on the price Canadian producers can get for the oil, though it is only one of the factors. The hope is also that

up the option of Asian markets. Right now 99 per cent of Canadian oil exports go to the United States, which also has an impact on prices. However, there are no refineries in Asia that can currently handle Canadian bitumen, which needs to be processed first into synthetic crude. Project proponents believe that if there was more product available ,the refineries in Asia would develop to use it because demand for oil in places like China and India is growing. Critics call that expectation a myth and say any extra oil coming from Trans Mountain for export would still end up going to the United States for refining. 3. What is diluted bitumen? The main product coming out of Alberta’s oilsands, bitumen is a thick product close to the consistency of cold molasses. To flow through pipelines, it must be mixed with chemicals to make it less viscous. The resulting product is diluted bitumen, or dilbit for short. It is more expensive to produce, is mined rather than pumped out of oil wells, and the science on how it behaves when spilled is still somewhat scarce. A major dilbit spill occurred in Michigan in 2010, when an Enbridge pipe leaked more than 3.7 million litres of dilbit into a tributary of the Kalamazoo River. Cleanup efforts took more than five years and a section of the river was closed to recreational use for nearly two years. Natural Resources Canada has concluded that spilled dilbit doesn’t sink and may in fact be easier to clean up. Three years after the Kalamazoo spill, however, Enbridge was ordered to return to the river to remove submerged oil and contaminated sediment. As of 2014, the estimated cleanup cost was more than $1 billion. 4. What is Bill C-69 and how does it relate to Trans Mountain?

government’s proposed overhaul of the environmental assessment process for major national projects, including interprovincial pipelines and highways, new refineries, electricity grids, airports and offshore wind farms. The Liberals say it is needed because the process created in 2012 by the former Conservative government was considered to be too weak on Indigenous consultation and environmental protection; under that process the Federal Court of Appeal overturned cabinet approval of the Northern Gateway pipeline and the Trans Mountain expansion. C-69 has yet to become law and does not apply to Trans Mountain, but it would kick in for any future projects if the Senate passes it this week. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer has vowed to repeal the bill if he becomes prime minister in the fall. The oil and gas industry says the legislation will prevent another pipeline from ever being approved in Canada, while environment groups argue it brings back some semblance of balance between approving major resource projects and ensuring Canada meets its climate change commitments. The Senate introduced more than 180 amendments to the bill, many of which would have reduced the requirements for taking into account impacts on Indigenous communities and climate change, and the government rejected more than half the Senate’s proposals. The Senate this week will debate the government’s response and decide whether it can live with the bill without those amendments. 5. What are the political ramifications of the Trans Mountain decision?

“If he really cared about his kids and about the future … then he would be not worrying so much about the financial situation,” said demonstrator Lynda Dernisky, who lives in Delta. “He would be caring about the planet. There’s only one planet – no Plan B.” George Rammell, another protester, vowed to fight the pipeline expansion “till it’s dead.” By 6 p.m., upwards of 250 dissenters had gathered. The crowd started moving at around 6:30 p.m. Footage from the scene showed demonstrators carrying signs with anti-pipeline mes-

saging on them, including “Future biologist: Please keep the planet alive so I can have a job (and a life)” and “The answer is still no.” The federal government announced its plans for the controversial pipeline expansion between Alberta and Burnaby early Tuesday afternoon following a cabinet meeting and after markets close for the day. Ottawa bought the pipeline last year for $4.5 billion dollars but the project was shelved nine months ago after the Federal Court of Appeal outlined concerns about Indigenous consultations and the impacts

‘It’s disastrous’: Protest against Trans Mountain pipeline in Vancouver

With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing the federal government’s approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion Tuesday, environmentalists wasted no time sending their message to Ottawa with hundreds of anti-pipeline protesters gathering downtown Vancouver.

The voices for and against the project are strong. Oil-industry advocates and conservative politicians say the pipeline is a must to keep the oilsands industry going; environmentalists and more left-leaning politicians are adamant that a new pipeline will make it impossible to meet Canada’s international climate change obligation to cut emissions almost 30 per cent over the next 11 years. For the Liberals, who have been trying to balance the economic needs of the oil industry and Alberta, with the concerns about climate change and the environment, the pipeline has proven troublesome. It is part of their “grand bargain” to prove their constant refrain that the “economy and the environment go hand in hand.” Their efforts to appease the oil industry by approving the pipeline and pulling out as many stops as they can to back up that approval -- including buying the existing pipeline for $4.5 billion and promising to expand it themselves -- have not improved the government’s credibility in the oil industry. Environmental groups that largely supported the Liberals in 2015 are also deeply skeptical. Indigenous communities are also divided over the pipeline, with some who feel if they can get a financial stake in the pipeline it will be a path to economic freedom, and others who worry if there is ever a spill it will have devastating consequences for their traditional way of life.
