Turning Tides BY now, it seems to be fairly well recognised that the country’s economy is tanking. Pretty much the entire citizenry has taken a deep hit. The blows that have fallen and will likely continue to fall (one must confess that one is no expert on the matter, but going by the views of people who know far better, it’s going to get worse before it gets better) are, of course, across industry or professional lines. Chartered accountants to bankers to engineers, most people seem to be talking about inflation, a decline — sometimes steep — in pay-scale standards, a collapsing job market. If this is the situation for so many that are amongst the most well educated in society, which translates to immense privilege, the reality of tens of millions is entirely more grim. The media industry is a somewhat different place, and presents an interesting angle — from the point of view of scholarship. In recent months, the industry in Pakistan has seen a series of layoffs, a general tightening of belts, pay cuts, and increasing insecurity. The state of the economy has to do with all this, certainly, given knock-on factors such as falling advertising budgets (linked to inflation, a fast-dropping rate of disposable incomes, and perhaps a receding consumerist

bubble), realities about the edu- for reading the news — that is, cation sector, etc. But there’s if they want any. A number of studies carried out, mainly in perhaps more to the story. across the globe to be revisited and overhauled. After all, television means that by the time a newspaper is worked upon, printed and distributed, yesterday’s news is already known and been absorbed (or, as the case may be, dismissed). The internet and television, amongst other modes, are almost instant technologies to disseminate information, including that which is most current. In the resuscitation of the newspaper industry, then, one way forward would be investigative, long-form journalism that does of course report on the stories of the day, but adds the dimension of context and analysis to a (as far as possible) scholarly extent. Journalists around the world have already been trained in such skills, and have the knowledge — or have access to it. Talk to any old hand and they provide a minefield of depth and perspective about matters of the day. Having worked with newspapers for years, of course one is well aware of the production process and the urgency that the medium demands (though not as much as the internet or television, but the serious print media’s information often proves much more solid). However, the world turns, and one has to turn with it.

‘Money makes the world go round’! By: Gulshan Alani Who doesn’t dream of being a Millionaire? It is true Money makes the world go round. Money, moves you around and allows you to do anything you desire, good or evil. Money has more power than the people’s brains. A wealthy man/woman can easily convince and tempt us to aceept all kinds of right and wrong things. In other words money has mesmerizing effect. Though, extreme love for money makes the person more greedier who doesn’t hesitate to obtain it with frauds. No doubt Money is most lovable and likeable by all the humans. It is a common opinion that you can live witout love but not without money. No, not really, what is the use of life without love?

The kind of love reflects in our love for family, friends, and honest people around us believers or non-Believers. Love and care makes us the Global Citizen. Love consists of care, concern, righteousness, truthfulness, respect, honesty, humanity, justice, loves clean healthy Environment, and faithfulness to Almighty Allah our Lord-Creator of the Universe. Evidently, the truth is that Money and love both are most needed to survive, both goes hand in hand, as both has higher values for the normal mankind who is fearful of Divine authority. Love and wealth both should be earned and used with ethics and moral values. According to the Divine Sharia law, Money should be clean, earned with honesty following the rules of Halal/ legal and Haram/forbidden, and not collected by force, false claims, business, family feud out of revenge, or obtained by perjury, frauds, lies, deceits, money laundry, blackmailing, or the worst false claim of human god that he can forgive sins every month by the cash payment, and giving false promise of Heaven by selling tickets costing thousands. Such money is called ‘Dirty Money’. Though, greed of money blocks the thinking of righteousness and brings

the blindness to the unethical actions that pollutes the mind, body and soul. Turning a blind eye to the pollution of earth and Water by the Oil Pipeline, Ignoring the Environment and its safety to gain ‘Money’, in the name of ‘increase employment’, is un-ethical belief. Blackmailing with sanctions that hurts the innocent civilians, and Children, locking up Children in a cage at the detention Ctr. it is clear Child abuse and criminal act, and violation of the Divine order-a great sin. These children needs their Mothers to love them and not just Tooth Brush.

Canadian Multiculturalism Day

Statement from Teresa Wat BC Liberal Critic for Multiculturalism and Richmond North Centre MLA Teresa Wat released the following statement on Canadian Multiculturalism Day: “Today we celebrate the cultural diversity that enriches every one of us, and recognize the remarkable contributions made by multicultural communities to our society. “We are fortunate to live in British Columbia, the most ethnically diverse province in Canada that has attracted

newcomers from around the world. Our strength therefore lies in tolerance, acceptance and cooperation between the many people that call this province home. “In addition to preserving and enhancing the multicultural heritage of B.C., we must continue to guard against intolerance and hatred on the basis of race or place of origin. Discrimination demeans us all and has no place in our society. “I encourage everyone to take today’s opportunity to build cultural awareness in your own home, workplace and community. We all have a responsibility for social diversity and inclusion. “Let’s ensure everyone is treated with respect and dignity and strive to create opportunity for all of B.C.”

If Sharifs and Zardaris bring half their looted wealth back, rupee will soar: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday vowed an end to corruption and preferential treatment given to law breakers. The prime minister made the remark while recalling that he had promised the people that he will get answers from those who have run the country to the ground and left it so enormously indebted. His was speaking in Rawalpindi after the launch of the Sir Syed Express train. “Do whatever you want. It won’t make a difference to me. I won’t give you (amnesty under) an NRO (National Reconciliation Ordinance). No matter whom you grovel to or whosoever intercedes on your behalf,” he vowed, directly addressing the PPP and PML-N leadership. “Shehbaz Sharif was standing in parliament and saying: ‘Look at how the rupee has fallen and the dollar has skyrocketed.’” “Shehbaz Sharif, your family and the Zardari

family — if you bring even half the wealth you looted back to this country, you will see the rupee soar and the dollar plummet,” he said.“I spoke of a New Pakistan and it has already started taking shape. No one had ever laid their hands on such big thieves. No one had ever been made accountable like this before,” claimed the prime minister, vowing accountability for every individual who had left the country in a shambles.“If you go to the jails here, all you find are poor people. One was jailed for eating food in Ramazan. He was imprisoned for six years and died there,” said the prime minister as he criticised what he sees as the double standard within the system for rich and poor criminals. “Those who have stolen billions from the country and taken it abroad say we want food from outside [the prison]. [They want] a VIP jail, air-conditioning. Eighty per cent of the populace doesn’t have an AC and here they want it in jail,” the premier said in disbelief. The prime minister then said that he had communicated his displeasure over this state of affairs to the law minister, urging him to ensure equal treatment of all prisoners. “I have told the law minister this too. You give people punishment so it is a deterrent for others. These guys are living it up in jail and sending a message to people to go big when they steal,” he said.“It is only the small thieves who have to face a difficult time in this country. [But] the new Pakistan will be one Pakistan; one law for everyone. The influential and the weak will all be viewed equally,” he promised. Source: dawn.com

Extension in FBR’s amnesty scheme ends today Salim

The scheme, which was rolled out on May 14, was supposed to end on June 30. However, the government decided to extend the deadline for the scheme to July 3. Under the scheme, assets within the country and abroad (except for real estate) can be whitened at a rate of four per cent. The whitened cash assets will have to be kept in Pakistani bank accounts. For people wanting to keep their whitened money abroad, a rate of 6pc will be charged.

For the declaration of real estate, values will be considered 150pc of the FBR-assigned value to bring it on a par with the market rate. Similarly, the value of real estate will be considered 150pc of the DC value where the FBR value has not been notified or less than the DC rate. Moreover, under the current scheme, the persons are also allowed to enhance the declared value of immovable property. Prime Minister Imran Khan has repeatedly asked citizens to take advantage of the amnesty scheme and declare all their assets. He also expressed his resolve that the current amnesty scheme would be the last one after which no leniency would be shown to those hiding their assets inside and outside the country. However, the prime minister had earlier hinted at extending the scheme so that more citizens could register for it. In a discussion with PTV on June 27, Prime Minister Imran noted that although it appeared that leaving things until the last minute was a Pakistani trait, he was “considering it [an extension to the scheme], because there’s a lot of pressure, and lots of people are saying that there is too little time left to register”. MNA Rana Sanaullah sent to jail on 14-day judicial remand

A day after his arrest, PML-N Punjab president MNA Rana Sanaullah Khan was sent to jail on Tuesday on 14-day judicial remand by a district court in Lahore.Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) officials presented the PML-N leader and five other suspects — Akram, Omer Farooq, Amir Rustum, Usman Ahmed and Sibtain Khan — before judicial magistrate Ahmad Waqas. All six suspects were sent to jail on judicial remand. Following his arrest, Sanaullah was shifted to Lahore’s Camp Jail. PML-N workers chanted the slogan

‘lion lion’ in the courtroom. The PML-N leader’s lawyer said that ANF had arrested Sanaullah after making a political case. Ahead of Sanaullah’s appearance before the court, strict security arrangements were made. A large contingent of police was positioned inside and outside the court. All routes to the court were closed with containers and barbed wires. On Monday, Sanaullah was arrested in what is said to be a narcotics case involving proscribed outfits. The PML-N termed the government’s

move to be “worst example of political victimisation” and warned that such tactics to push the opposition against the wall would backfire. An ANF team arrested Sanaullah, a vociferous critic of Prime Minister Imran Khan, on his way to Lahore from Faisalabad on Motorway at around 3pm at Sukheyki. Although the ANF chose to not give details of his arrest, Minister for States and Frontier Regions Shehryar Khan Afridi had confirmed his arrest, saying “ANF has arrested Rana Sanaullah. He is my colleague but no one is above the law”.

Money from rise in sugar prices is going to the govt, not me: PTI’s Jahangir Tareen Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Khan Tareen on Tuesday said neither he nor the sugar mills in the country would benefit from the government’s increased tax on sugar in the new budget. “The money from the rise in sugar prices will not go to me or to the sugar mills — it is going to the government,” said the former PTI secretary general while addressing a press conference on the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Emergency Programme along with Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sahibzada Mohammad Mehboob Sultan.Tareen, in response to a question, said: “This is a big misconception that people are spreading. He said that any additional revenue for an increase in sugar prices was going to the government,

not the private sector. The government in its budget for 2019-20 increased the tax on sugar from 11 per cent to 17pc, saying the move would result in a mere increase of up to Rs3.5 per kilogram. PTI leader and former finance minister Asad Umar, however, had asked his party’s government to reconsider the increased tax on sugar and cooking oil in the federal budget. Umar had also called for an investigation as to why sugar prices are on the rise. During the press conference today, Tareen also responded to a question regarding his role in the government: “I do not hold a position,” he said, adding that the Supreme Court’s verdict regarding his disqualification had stated that he could not do so. Tareen was disqualified on December 15,

2017, for the misdeclaration under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution — the same provision under which former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was held ineligible for life to hold any public office over the Panama Papers leaks case. The PTI leader said that if he is called for advice, he would provide it, adding that Sahibzada Sultan had earlier told the press that he had invited Tareen himself. Tareen said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had given him the responsibility for the agriculture emergency programme and he had also given the cabinet a briefing on the matter. Later, during the press conference, the federal minister for national food security and research reiterated that Tareen was sitting at the press conference on his request.

On Canada Day, Trump says relationship ‘one U.S. government photos show deof the most important,’ vows to maintain it tained migrants pleading for help

OTTAWA – Americans view the bilateral relationship with Canada as “one of the most important” relationships and will work to maintain it, according to U.S. President Donald Trump. In a statement congratulating his neighbours to the north on the occasion of Canada Day, Trump offered his “best wishes for your nation’s bright future.” “Since its founding, Canada has represented a powerful, positive force in the world,” Trump’s statement read. “Our people share many strong bonds, including a common history, close cultural, economic, and familial ties, and a deep sense of duty to promote peace and prosperity in the world.” This diplomatic nod was sent on Sunday to Governor General Julie Payette, alongside warm remarks from U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft.

Pompeo said that the United States is “proud to partner” with Canada when it comes to promoting democracy, human rights, and respect for the rule of law globally. He cited the bilateral trading relationship, collaborations on combatting terrorism and space exploration, and preventing human rights abuses as examples. “We join with our Canadian friends and neighbors to celebrate the 152nd anniversary of Confederation,” Pompeo said. Similarly, Craft cited the re-negotiated, but yet-to-be-ratified NAFTA deal, and the Canada-U.S. pledge to partner on the Lunar Gateway program as high-points between the two nations over the last year. “I am very optimistic that the coming year will bring our countries even closer,” Craft said. “Americans are so fortunate to have neighbors like you.” Source: ctvnews.ca

HOUSTON -- In one photo, one of 88 men in a cell meant for 41 presses a piece of cardboard against the window, with the word “help.” In another, a man lowers his head and clasps his hands as if in prayer. And in a third, a woman wearing a surgical mask presses both of her hands against the glass. The images were released Tuesday by U.S. government auditors who visited facilities in South Texas where migrant adults and children who crossed the nearby border with Mexico are processed and detained. As public outrage grows over the conditions in which thousands of people -- some no more than a few months old -- are being held by the U.S. government, the report offered new cause for alarm. It quotes one senior government manager as calling the situation “a ticking time bomb.” ”Specifically, when detainees observed us, they banged on the cell windows, shouted, pressed notes to the window with their time in custody, and gestured to evidence of their time in custody,” the report says. BuzzFeed first reported on a draft version of the report, which blurs most faces in the photos. Auditors from the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general visited five facilities and two ports of entry in South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, where more people cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally than any other section. The dangers there

were recently illustrated in images shared around the world showing a young father and daughter who drowned trying to cross the Rio Grande and enter the U.S. Around 8,000 people were detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the Rio Grande Valley in early June, when auditors visited the facilities. Around 7,500 people are detained there now, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The Border Patrol made 132,887 apprehensions in May, including 84,542 adults and children travelling together. With long-term facilities for adults and children at capacity, President Donald Trump’s administration has said it has to hold people in unsuitable Border Patrol facilities for much longer than the 72 hours normally allowed by law. Iran warns it will increase nuclear Facebook says some users facing enrichment within days outage on its platforms

Iran’s president is warning Europe that Tehran will “take the next step” in increasing its uranium enrichment this coming Sunday. The comments Wednesday by President Hassan Rouhani further increases pressure on European partners to salvage the unraveling 2015 nuclear deal following the U.S. withdrawal from the accord last year. Pakistan, India ready to resume ‘An honour to serve the Congress Party,’ Kartarpur talks on 14th says Rahul Gandhi as he steps down

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to expeditious completion of Kartarpur Corridor as it accepted an Indian proposal for a second bilateral meeting on the modalities for the functioning of visa-free passage in the second week of July. “Pakistan, today, conveyed to India that the second meeting to discuss the draft agreement for finalising the modalities of Kartarpur Corridor and related technical issues will be held on 14th July, 2019 at Wagah,” said a Foreign Office (FO) statement. India had earlier pulled out of the second bi-

lateral meeting scheduled for April 2 after the two sides had met at Attari on March 14. The FO said the Indian side was asked to share the composition of its delegation visiting Wagah on July 14. Just last Saturday a report published by Hindustan Times said New Delhi had proposed to Pakistan that the second meeting of the officials for finalising the modalities of the opening of the corridor be held between July 11 and 14 at Wagah on the Pakistani side of the border. Source: dawn.com

Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday called serving the Congress Party “an honour” as he resigned as the leader of India’s main opposition party, saying he owed “the country and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love”. “I was born a Congressman, this party has always been with me and is my life’s blood and forever that way it shall remain,” said Gandhi at the end of a four-page letter shared on Twitter. Earlier in the day, according to Hindustan Times, Gandhi had told reporters that the party must quickly decide on the new chief and that its top decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee (CWC), must meet at the earliest to pick a new president. “I have already submitted my resignation and I am no longer the party president,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying. On Tuesday, Gandhi — whose father, grandmother and great grandfather were all former prime ministers — had spurned appeals to reconsider his resignation as leader of the Congress party after losing a second general election to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Stuck between a leader determined to quit and party officials unwilling to accept his leaving, Congress is effectively leaderless more than a month after its election drubbing and facing key state polls later this year. Chief ministers

from five Congress-ruled states went to New Delhi on Monday where they spent two hours trying to convince Gandhi to reverse his May 25 decision to resign.“We told him our point of view, openly, in a long conversation,” Ashok Gehlot, a senior Congress leader and chief minister of Rajasthan, told reporters. A close aide to Gandhi, speaking to Reuters after the meeting, had said the 49-year-old was firm about stepping aside as Congress president, a position he held since succeeding his mother, Sonia Gandhi, in late 2017. “He will never change his mind,” the aide had said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media. “He feels that the way forward is not him continuing as Congress president [...] and let somebody outside the Gandhi family be Congress president,” the aide said, adding the party cannot “just depend on one person, one family”

8 Important Tips to Improve Your Qur’an Recitation! Tajweed Series! By:Muneer Bint Fayaz

Just like how we like to keep ourselves updated along the time, we must keep our Tajweed up to date. Meaning, there is more to the recitation of the Qur’an then just the words or tune and the rhythm. The person who reads the Qur’an without Tajweed is like someone walking in a garden full of beautiful flowers and crushing those beautiful flowers cruelly just because he doesn’t know how to take care of them – Dr. AbdulAzeez AbdulRaheem. So, we need to learn Tajweed, take care of it and brush it up time to time so that we are not making or repeating any mistakes knowingly or unknowingly in the recitation of the Qur’an. Allah says: ’and recite the Qur’an with measured recitation’’. (Surah Muzammil, Ayat # 3). So, we are supposed to beautify our recitation with proper Tajweed applying all rules and characteristics properly. Here are 8 tips to help you boost your Qur’an recitation in an easy way and in shortest time, Insha Allah. 1. Pronunciation 2. Intonation 3. Quality of the recitation 4. Articulation of the rules, characteristics, vowels etc. 5. Breath, pause and stop at the right time 6. Listen to other renowned reciters 7. Understand what is being recited 8. Teach others and master your Tajweed

1:Pronunciation

The Qur’an is a whole book consists of Surahs and Surahs consists of Ayahs and Ayahs consists of words and words consists of letters. It starts with how correct you pronounce the letter which makes a word. You first need to understand the letters, their sounds, and its pronunciation which will help you so much in the proper recitation. So, you need to first practice the sound of each letter well. Check our super fun and easy Tajweed poem HERE. This will help you utter each letter correctly and clearly, insha Allah.

8:Teaching to master yourself and help others correct their Tajweed

Qur’an which just doesn’t give any sense of what you are reading. In fact, A study performed by Ghorbani et al. demonstrated that listening to the Quran recitation significantly reduced the anxiety level in the intervention group compared with the control group. The research of Qasemtabar et al. confirmed the results of study by Ghorbani et al. A study by Heidari and Shahbazi showed that anxiety level in nursing and emergency medicine students was significantly lower during exams with Quran recitation than the exams without it. And there are many more studies in this regard. Subhan Allah! We are so blessed to be honored with the sacred book on earth i.e. the Qur’an.

4:Articulation of the rules, vowels etc.

Tajweed is governed by some rules, like the utterance and sounds of the letters, hiding and opening of the letters etc. We must recognize each rule, giving every letter of the Qur’an its rights and dues of characteristics observing the rules. This is very important. Therefore, articulation while reading is very important for a flawless recitation.

5:Breath, pause and stop at the right time

7:Understanding what is being recited

The best way to learn anything in the shortest time and master it is to teach the same to others. And what best can be this than to teach others the Qur’an. As Narrated `Uthman: The Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬ said, “The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027). So, start teaching others, begin with your family members or friends and you can also start teaching kids at home. Help them learn basics of Tajweed, the rules etc. and you will never forget what you taught others. Now that you have got some good and easy tips to learn or improve Tajweed. Don’t delay your journey of learning of the Tajweed. And for this you have UQA to count on, we can help you live this dream in the shortest time, in the most fun and easy way, Insha Allah. Alhamdulillah! we teach Tajweed, understand Qur’an and memorization of Qur’an courses. And our highly dedicated & professional tutors will teach you from scratch letter by letter (if needed) at your convenient schedule and in your preferred language, Insha Allah. May Allah ease your path of learning Qur’an Tajweed, aameen

We are obligated to pay the Qur’an it’s due by proper reading and understanding of what is being read. If you could understand what you are reading, then nothing like that. Why to rely on translations or translators when we ourselves can understand the book of Allah? When you understand what you are reading then you will be able to recite from the bottom of your heart, putting all emotions. For this you need to learn then whole Arabic language, but you can just learn Qur’anic Arabic and start understanding the Qur’an in the shortest JazakAllahu khair S: understandquran.com and most easy way.

Nearly 9 in 10 Canadians would Corruption in Ukraine hurts reform, U.S. fail the citizenship test: poll envoy says as Toronto conference begins Most Canadians don’t know their country as well as they may think, a new poll suggests. The survey, released in time for Canada Day, asked a random sample of 1,645 voters 10 questions from the study guide given to those looking to become Canadian citizens. The results weren’t great. Only 12 per cent of respondents got eight or more correct answers, the threshold to pass the test. The average score was five out of 10. I did have a feeling that Canadians wouldn’t score that well and unfortunately that’s in fact the case,” Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research, told CTV News Channel. “These are things that you either should’ve studied in school, or if you didn’t grow up in Canada, taking a citizenship test, you should’ve learned about.” British Columbians were most likely to pass the test, with a 22-per-cent success rate. Respondents with a post-graduate degree were at 21 per cent. Quebecers performed worst on the test, with a 95-per-cent failure rate, and only six per cent of seniors passed the test. “In Quebec, there’s sometimes less attention to non-Quebec issues,” Bozinoff said. Here’s a breakdown of the questions: Question one: Who are the Métis? A) A distinct people of mixed Aboriginal and European ancestry B) A distinct Aboriginal people of Atlantic Canada C) The first French settlers D) The original settlers of Montreal Correct answer: 55 per cent of respondents correctly answered A) A distinct people of mixed Aboriginal and European ancestry. Question two: What is the name of the Royal Anthem of Canada? A) God Save the Queen, B) O Canada C) The Star-Spangled Banner D) La Marseillaise Answer: One-third of respondents, or 36 per cent, correctly answered A) God Save the Queen. Question three: Respondents were given a list of official responsibilities Canadian citizens have and were asked to determine which of was not an official responsibility. A) Helping others in the community B) Voting in elections C) Protecting and enjoying our heritage and environment D) Driving safely Answer: Twenty-six per cent correctly answered D) Driving safely. Question four: When did the Canadian

Charter of Rights and Freedoms become part of the Constitution? A) 1867, B) 1982, C) 1988, D) 2000 Answer: Four in 10 respondents correctly answered B) 1982 Question five: Canada has five regions. Which of the following is not one of them? A) West Coast, B) Central Canada C) The Midwest, D) The Prairies E) The Northern Territories F) Atlantic Canada Answer: Sixty-three per cent correctly answered C) The Midwest. Question six: What does the word “Inuit” mean? A) The people, B) The north C) Home, D) Land Answer: More than half, or 56 per cent, correctly answered A) The people Question seven: Who are the founding peoples of Canada? A) Inuit, Aboriginal, British B) Metis, French, British C) Aboriginal, Metis, French D) Aboriginal, French, British Answer: Nearly half, or 48 per cent, correctly answered D) Aboriginal, French, British as the founding peoples of Canada. Question eight: The names of four party leaders were presented to respondents: Duceppe, Trudeau, Scheer, and May. Respondents were asked to identify which was not currently a leader in the House of Commons. Answer: Just over half, or 53 per cent, correctly answered Duceppe Question nine: What was the importance of the Canada Pacific Railway? A) Uniting the country from sea to sea B) The start of the manufacturing industry or easy access to steel from west to east C) Wealth, and Canada increasing its GDP Answer: Sixty-five per cent of respondents correctly answered A) Uniting the country from sea to sea Question 10: Who is Canada’s head of state? P.E.I. becomes the first province to ban plastic bags Prince Edward Island has become the first province to introduce a ban on single-use plastic bags. The Plastic Bag Reduction Act officially came into effect on Canada Day and prohibits businesses from providing singleuse plastic bags at checkout. They are instead to offer paper bags or higher quality reusable bags. The province says these other bags are more durable and result in less waste. There are exceptions to the regulation, however. Businesses will be allowed to provide plastic bags for a variety of products, including bulk produce, live fish, prescription drugs and dry cleaning, among others. Businesses in P.E.I. will also be allowed to use up the stock of plastic bags they already have. According to the Retail Council in Canada, 48 communities across Canada either have a plastic bag ban or have committed to introducing one in the near future, but P.E.I. has the only province-wide ban. Jordan Keenanof the Plastics Oceans Foundation Canada told CTV News Channel a lot of these bans are proving to be difficult to enforce. “I live in Montreal (and) we’ve had a plastic bag ban here for a while, yet you

can still get plastic bags, pretty much everywhere,” he said. Victoria, B.C. introduced a single-use plastic bag ban a year ago and on Monday increased the prices of grocery bags to 25 cents for a paper bag and $2 for a reusable bag. The city said the increase is meant to reduce the demand for the recyclable bags while helping businesses recoup some of the costs of transitioning to this policy. Last month, the Trudeau government announced its intention to ban single-use plastics across the country by 2021, including plastic bags, water bottles and straws. Vancouver plans to ban single-use plastics by 2020. Source: ctvnews.ca

OTTAWA -- Ukraine’s weak judicial system is hurting the country’s prospects for reform, which is the only way it will ultimately overcome Russia’s ongoing aggression, says the Trump administration’s point man on the embattled country. “You have a judiciary that has been subject to political influences from various directions for a long time,” said Kurt Volker, the U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations and former ambassador to NATO. He offered that assessment on the margins of a major international conference on the Eastern European country’s future that began in Toronto on Tuesday. The meeting marked the North American debut of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who projected bonhomie before and after his meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Zelenskiy, a popular actor and comedian with no previous political experience, easily won this spring’s presidential election, unseating Petro Poroshenko. His appearance in Toronto is partly about allaying concern over whether someone who played the Ukrainian president in a TV

drama was cut out for the actual job. Representatives from more than three dozen countries and international finance organizations want to see continued momentum on Poroshenko’s five years of reforms. Zelenskiy also met David Lipton, the first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, which has in the past frozen billions in reconstruction money for Ukraine because of concerns over corruption. Volker said Lipton expressed concerns about the lack of “legal certainty” in Ukraine -- the rules-based stability that gives potential investors confidence they need to enter the market.“Investors do not have that confidence right now,” said Volker. “Some terrible things are holding the Ukrainian economy back because it keeps foreign investment away.” That being said, the United States is confident that Zelenskiy is up to the task of speeding up reform in Ukraine. Trudeau was certainly upbeat about Ukraine’s future, touting Canada’s free-trade deal with the country. Source: ctvnews.ca

Canadian man pleads with Trudeau gov’t to rescue stranded niece in Syria

LONDON - The Canadian uncle of a young orphan stranded in a refugee camp in Syria has sent a new letter pleading with the Trudeau government to acknowledge its “moral obligation” and rescue his niece, Amira. He has also threatened to go to Syria on his own and try to bring the child out.“Please show some compassion for an innocent girl,” he wrote in a recent appeal to Global Affairs. A four-year-old orphaned citizen is being detained in an open prison in the middle of the desert.” Amira’s parents left Canada in 2014 to join ISIS. They were killed in an air strike earlier this year along with three other siblings. Amira survived and was taken to the al-Hol camp, but little is known about her condition or whereabouts. CTV News first reported on her situation in June. Her uncle, who lives in Toronto and wishes to remain anonymous, says he found Canada’s response “demoralizing.” His letters to the government reflect a growing anxiety and frustration. “The government clearly doesn’t have the will to bring my niece home,” he wrote. “I have reached the end of my rope.” Canada has told him Amira must undergo a DNA test to establish her status as a Canadian citizen, before she can be issued travel papers. That could take months. At least 28 Canadian women and children are stranded in the camp and desperate to return home. Their husbands were either killed or imprisoned. In messages to CTV News, some of the

women have described the dire lack of clean water and medicine, extreme heat and dust storms, as well as the threat from snakes and scorpions. They say they are also subject to nightly raids by the Kurdish guards looking for mobile phones. One of the families quoted an unnamed government official as saying Canada would continue to express its concern in public, but would do nothing to help. Aimee, a Canadian woman from Alberta, recently sent a photo of her newborn son, Mohammed. She traveled to Syria with her Canadian husband and two other sons in 2014. Her first and second husbands were both killed fighting for ISIS. In another written plea to the government, Aimee’s mother said she was extremely worried her daughter and three young children might die. “I am begging the Canadian government to assist in their safe return to Canada. “Other women and children have died in that camp, and I fear the worst the longer my family stays there.” Source: ctvnews.ca

Early electioneering? Where the party leaders are visiting on Canada Day

On the last Canada Day before the next election, the main federal party leaders are making campaign-style stops, and where they are visiting may offer early indications of where the various parties look to make gains, or hold on to seats. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau started his day at a community Canada Day event in Ottawa’s Riverside South, which is part of Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre’s Carleton, Ont. riding. Trudeau was joined by the Liberal candidate in that riding, Chris Rodgers, who came second in 2015, losing by just under 2,000 votes. At the event Trudeau was shaking hands, taking photos and holding babies. “I think it’s really nice that he took the time to come out here,” said attendee and Liberal supporter Kate Moussouni. After making the rounds the prime minister made his way to Parliament Hill for the major festivities where he spoke to the crowd of

some 16,000 people about his government’s achievements over the last four years. “We can and we must continue to make out country even better,” Trudeau said. “We owe it to Canadians who every day make this country stronger with acts of kindness, courage, and compassion both big and small. I have no doubt that together we can continue to build a country we can all be proud to call home.” Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is spending his day embarking on a cross-Canada mini tour of Liberal-held ridings that prior to the last election were Conservative seats. He started off in Medutic, in New Brunswick, which is part of outgoing Liberal MP TJ Harvey’s Tobique-Mactaquac riding. Harvey is not running again so the Liberals won’t have the advantage of an incumbent campaigning, and

according to the party’s website, the Liberals have yet to nominate a candidate. Scheer had his candidate Richard Bragdon -- who lost to Harvey in 2015 by just under 3,800 votes -- with him at a community breakfast. Then Scheer attended Toronto Ribfest, in Etobicoke, Ont., an area which is currently divided into three Liberal-held constituencies. He’s ending his day in Kelowna, B.C., which is part of Liberal incumbent Stephen Fuhr’s Kelowna-Lake Country riding. In an interview with CP24 the federal Conservative leader said that his intention is to celebrate 152 years since Confederation by seeing as much of Canada as he can, and that while his intention was to “leave politics for other days,” “when people bring up issues I’ll certainly be talking to them about our platform ideas to help them get ahead,” Scheer said.“One of the things we need to celebrate and keep mindful on Canada Day is why people choose Canada, people come to Canada from all over the world because of our freedom… because we are the type of country that people can get ahead… my message is to people is we have to preserve that,” Scheer said. This echoed the message he had in a video posted on social media and emailed to supporters. “I’m proud of our country, I’m proud of our history… And we should go into the future with our heads

held high.” Taking a more close-to-home approach, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is spending his Canada Day in his Burnaby South, B.C. riding -- a seat he fought to win less than six months ago. Singh has plans to visit a festival, parade, and other afternoon and evening celebrations. “Today we’re celebrating Canada Day and it makes me kind of think about what it means to be Canadian… We’re proud of what we’ve built and I know there’s more things we need to do,” Singh told a Canada Day crowd in his riding, referencing several key NDP policy planks, like pharmacare and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. “Let’s imagine the Canada we want to build today, and for tomorrow,” Singh said. Detained In Dubai: Saudi sisters’ asylum bid must not be overshadowed by escape of Princess Haya

Detained In Dubai - Jul 02, 2019 epression of women in the Gulf is widespread, and cases like Princess Haya are the tip of the iceberg. Saudi sisters Dua and Dalal Khalid in urgent need of asylum while media attention focuses on the escape of Haya. As global attention has turned to the apparent asylum bid of Princess Haya bint Hussein and her escape from the UAE, reportedly with millions of dollars in tow; Saudi sisters Dua and Dalal Khalid are literally hiding out in Turkey in constant fear for their lives, trying desperately to be granted refugee status or asylum in a third country before their family members find them. While the Princess Haya story piques the media’s interest, particularly in the aftermath of the earlier escape by Sheikha Latifa; both of whom were fleeing Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai; not all women escaping abusive families in the Gulf are royalty.

Dua and Dalal (left). The two Saudi girls’ lives are in danger, and they don’t have Princess Haya’s millions to help them. Only “Cases like Latifa and Haya really represent the tip of the iceberg,” Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai says, “The proper way to understand it is that domestic abuse and repression of women in the Gulf

Radha Stirling (right) CEO of Detained In Dubai to fight their corner and find them a safe country to give asylum is such a widespread social problem that it is even occurring at the highest levels of society. Even the wives and daughters of the region’s rulers are not safe; so the situation for average women is even worse. Dua and

Dalal have detailed an experience of unending abuse, subjugation, discrimination, and domestic tyranny from childhood until today. Even after their escape in Turkey, they are still being pursued, and in danger of deportation back to the same horrific conditions which have traumatised them all their lives. “Princess Haya has yet to utter a word about her escape, yet her story has overshadowed Dua and Dalal, who have been pleading for help on social media for weeks, while living in constant danger. “At this point, having renounced Islam, and having named and shamed their abusers on social media, the sisters’ lives are at risk if they are not granted asylum. In Saudi Arabia, they will be charged with apostasy, potentially even sedition, and subject to being publicly beheaded for these ‘crimes’. Every day that they remain in Turkey is life-threatening; it was, after all, in Turkey that Saudi authorities carried out the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. They do not have millions of

Things Every Prospective Hajji Should Know

H

By: Hajja Saira ajji [‘haj-jee] (col.) noun 1. someone who performs the act of Hajj (Pilgrimage). 2. a title given to someone who survived Hajj

Introduction

build endurance. Boost your immunity. Travelling from the U.S. takes a huge toll: long plane rides, layovers, and a wait anywhere from 2 - 12hrs at the Jeddah airport. So indulge in fruits and veggies while in the U.S., especially those rich in antioxidants. Stay away from sick people as best as you can during the trip. One friend started taking a teaspoon of honey regularly in her tea. A few people wore a surgeon’s mask throughout the trip. Although it may seem mean, don’t share your water bottles or share prayer mats. You might still get sick, but take whatever precautions you can. Pace yourself upon arrival. Try to balance between resting and making the most of your time in Makkah and Madina. You don’t want to wear yourself out before going to Mina, but at the same time you want to earn good deeds in the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah. Preventive care. Take medicine as soon as you feel sick, but avoid taking antibiotics unless or until you have been diagnosed with a bacterial infection. Ricola cough drops are excellent. It is a good idea to take several packs because people will ask you for some. Everyone gets the ‘Hajj cough’. Use lemon, honey, orange juice, etc. Take Vitamin C supplements regularly during the trip-don’t wait till you get sick to start this! Gather your supplies. Make a list before travelling so that you don’t forget anything. Make a specific list for the days of Hajj before you leave for Mina (i.e. stuff you will pack in your backpack) Take your ‘worship tools’ to use during the waiting time. A lot of times people find themselves without anything to do during the long stretches. Come prepared with a Qur’an, seerah (biography of the Prophet book, or dhikr (remembrance/prayer) beads. Write down a few du’a (supplications) for yourself that you can memorize or repeat frequently. Sometimes you will be too tired to remember so keep a small notebook on hand. Also, you can write down some notes or reflections that will help preserve the experience. Stay energized. You need to keep hydrated-drink Zamzam (water from the well of Zamzam in Mecca) but also take snacks and energy bars. Some programs do not serve lunch so healthy snacks will help hold you till dinner. If you don’t like the food at the hotel, don’t complain. There are plenty of places to eat at the malls and hotels. Avoid anything that doesn’t seem clean and anything that you know makes your stomach upset.

Welcome, prospective Hajji, to a unique journey. This journey is an invitation from your Lord to visit His House and engage in one of the most illustrious acts of worship. He picked you out of millions of people to travel across the world and ask for forgiveness in the best place on Earth. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to work on making your Hajj accepted by Allah . This means that you fulfill all the requirements and avoid all the actions that nullify Hajj such that you come back home purified from all sins. You’ve heard it before: Hajj is a beautiful journey. But this journey is a struggle. It is said the greatest physical struggle for a woman is to complete Hajj. Like any journey, being prepared in advance will help to maximize the experience and to deal with challenges. I compiled advice from different friends and experienced hajj veterans to help future Hajjis prepare physically, mentally and spiritually. Hajj stories are very diverse-some have scary stories (don’t ask too much about the bathroom situation) while others have some hilarious moments or a few depressing encounters. Understand that every Hajj experience is different but the goal is the same. Please keep in mind that you will get advice from different people who have different goals and values. Take what you feel matches your own values. For instance: I like to prepare for things as much as I can in advance-therefore I will buy all the things I need in the U.S. instead of hunting down things last minute in Makkah/Madina. I also dislike waste and like to economize-so I prefer taking a few used items from family/ friends instead of buying everything new. I also like to give away non-essential items to needy people in Mina. I prefer to use natural medicines before going to regular meds, however I made an exception during Hajj in order to minimize risks and because Hajj re- Mental Prep quires a lot of energy. Overall, a balanced approach and positive attitude will be your best friends during this trip. The ingredients of a successful Hajj are preparation before the journey, extra patience during the trip, and sincere effort towards improving yourself after the journey. As you keep the following steps in mind, remember to continuously ask Allah to help you in the journey. He can make the difficult Know the requirements of performing Hajj. easy and without His help we are lost. You don’t want to waste this trip by missPhysical Prep ing something important. Attend the workshops in your area and/or read a book. Then review the information before you get to Mina. As a first time Hajji it’s natural to be unfamiliar with the rites, so ask scholars in the group. Know what to expect and set the expectations. Hajj is the journey of a lifetime; but at the same time you might face things that Get in shape. You will walk, walk and walk are upsetting. Sadly, I encountered a lot of some more. Some people recommend walk- trash and garbage thrown all over the place ing regularly in the weeks before Hajj to in Mina. The bathroom situation is another story. Expect squatter toilets and learn to

use them. If used correctly it can be sanitary and easier to use then regular toilets. Strategize. A few tricks will help you maximize your time. For example, when going to pray at the rawdah in the Prophet’s masjid there are designated times for women. Head towards the rawdah area towards the end of the time allotted and try to be in the last group praying. You won’t feel as hassled because there is nobody coming behind you. Also, there are air-conditioned areas in the Haram (area around the Ka’bah) in Makkah on the first and second floor (enter through King Fahd entrance and stay on the left). Plan on praying/sitting there during the hottest part of the day. Since the time between Maghrib (post-sunset prayer) and ‘Isha (night prayer) is short, it’s a good idea to stay at the Haram between those prayers. That way you won’t struggle for a spot inside. One local student gave us this awesome tip: Make sa’i (the walk between the hills of Safa and Marwa) on the 4th floor roof extension area, which is usually empty and has a wonderful view during Fajr (pre-dawn prayer) time. Don’t be cheap. You will see a lot of the poor and the elderly. Help them as much as you can and be generous. Don’t haggle with store keepers over small amounts. At the same time be cautious of theft and being ripped off by taxi drivers. As in any big city there are opportunists, so be cautious of your money and personal items. Keep your shoes in a plastic bag with you at all times. Side point: don’t take a camera or camera phone into the Prophet’s masjid (for women, there are female guards who will frisk you before letting you in). Get in the right mindset by surrendering yourself to Allah . You are going on Hajj, which is not a vacation in a 4 star hotel. You will be tested in different ways so remind yourself to be patient and not to complain. You are invited as Allah’s guests so use the correct manners that a guest should have. As a bonus, try to catch yourself before reacting negatively to a test by acknowledging that that what is making you upset is the test. Remember why you are here: to complete Hajj and go back home. You are not here to change the Saudi government or fix the ignorance of the ummah (community). You are not here to argue with different people about who is right and wrong. You might need to develop a mantra or phrase to remind yourself. A few people would remind themselves saying, “La jidaal,” or “No arguing,” if they started to get annoyed with a spouse, family member, or random uncle in the group. Don’t compare your group to other groups. It’s very easy to get caught up in what other people ate or what their tents were like. Avoid going down that road and remind yourself that everyone’s test will be different and no one has a problem-free Hajj. Focus on yourself, make incessant talbiyah [Labbayk Allahuma labbayk-I respond to Your call O Allah, I respond to Your call], and embody your submission to Allah . Minimize the distractions. This is one of the biggest struggles. There is a lot going on and sometimes it will be hard to focus. Try to set goals for yourself before the trip so you know what to work on. I saw many people complete the Qur’an in a few short weeks. Plan on getting to the Haram extra early if you want to pray inside. Avoid getting into debates about different opinions and madhabs (schools of thought). Decide on what you are going to follow beforehand and don’t get confused when people tell you that your Hajj won’t be accepted. People find themselves waiting a lot and start to discuss these issues that end up creating confusion or hostility. Follow your group leader who is experienced and let oth-

ers follow their leaders. Stick together and find an experienced person to follow. This may seem obvious but a buddy system will help prevent you from getting lost. An experienced Hajji is full of tips and will make some of the rites easier to perform (such as the best time to throw stones and which area is easier to start from). Keep calm with your roommates and carry on. If you are sharing a room with other people in Makkah or Madina take some earplugs or eye covers to help you get rest. You might be paired with a roommate that can be a test for you-just try to take things in stride and avoid getting upset or frustrated with the person. If you are annoyed, try to do nice things for the person and make du’a’ for that person and yourself. Use the full day of Arafah for worshipnot just the time after Asr (late afternoon prayer). Many people fall into this trap and spend time sitting, eating and talking on the most important day of Hajj and only start making du’a’ after ‘Asr. Separate yourself from people and focus on seeking forgiveness. The Prophet used to make du’a’ the entire day and intensified the supplication after ‘Asr. The same thing applies after Arafah when people revert to their old habits and lose focus while they are still on Hajj! Continue to keep yourself busy with reading, remembrance, and extra worship. Side point: plan to avoid the bathrooms at Muzdalifah. Eat/drink accordingly and use the bathrooms in Arafah before getting on the bus to Muzdalifah. An experienced Hajji advised: “Treat tawaf (walking 7 times around the Ka’bah) like prayer and strive for khushoo’ [concentration].” The virtue of tawaf is well known: it is recommended to perform tawaf in the Haram before praying two rakahs (units of prayer) as the ‘greeting’ of the masjid! One idea is to pick different du’a’ or prayers for each round, or to pick the first round for seeking forgiveness, the second round for making du’a’ for the community, etc. Performing tawaf can be a struggle given all the distractions. Try to avoid congested areas and the 2nd floor wheelchair drivers (who go fast and end up hitting peoples’ ankles). One recommendation is to avoid the first and second floor and only make tawaf and sa’i on the relatively un-crowded rooftop. Ask Allah for help. This advice was given by an elderly woman sitting in the Prophet’s masjid. She said to always start your actions by asking Allah to help you. Allah can make anything happen-all we need to do is ask.

Spiritual Prep

This important aspect tends to be ignored since many people focus on the external actions of Hajj and then focus on trying to survive the trip. If you make this a priority ahead of time by taking a few steps to prepare then the struggle can be spiritually uplifting and rewarding. Read the Inner Dimensions of Hajj notes based on

Most Iranians have suffered economic hardship sparked by reimposed and newly created American sanctions after US President Donald Trump pulled out of the historic 2015 nuclear deal involving Iran and world powers.Trump called it “the worst deal ever” but by all indications Iran was abiding by the agreement and refraining from building a nuclear weapons programme. Months of tensions between Tehran and Washington have seen the US rush an aircraft carrier, nuclear-capable B-52 bombers, F-22 fighters, and thousands of additional troops to the Middle East. Syria Attacks calls Israeli strikes ‘state terrorism’ by Israel near Damascus and in Homs killed nine pro-government fighters and six civilians, monitor says.

Syria has accused Israel of committing “state terrorism” after Israeli air strikes killed at least 15 people, including children.“Israeli authorities are increasingly practising state terrorism,” the foreign ministry said on Tuesday in a statement carried by the official SANA news agency. “The latest heinous Israeli aggression falls within the framework of ongoing Israeli attempts to prolong the crisis in Syria,” it

added. Israeli air strikes near Damascus and in Homs province late on Sunday killed nine mostly foreign pro-government fighters and six civilians, including three children, Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment. Demands for accountability Syria’s foreign ministry filed a complaint to the United Nations Security Council over the attack demanding accountability, according to SANA.

Israel’s “dangerous and hostile” actions would not have been possible without the support of its ally the United States, which protects it in the Security Council, it said. The air strikes hit several Iranian positions near Damascus, and also targeted a research centre and a military airport west of the city of Homs where the Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah and Iranians are deployed, the Syrian Observatory said. One of the pro-government fighters killed was Syrian, while the rest were of other nationalities, its chief Rami Abdurrahman said. Source: aljazeera.com

Things Every Prospective Hajji Should Know

a lecture by Shaykh Mokthar Maghraoui ahead of time to get in the proper spiritual frame of mind. The Shaykh describes the Hajj rites from a different perspectivebeyond the walking and waiting, Hajj is an intense act of worship that has spiritual significance. Hajj is not just a physical journey but a surrendering of the heart to Allah with absolute submission. You will give up everyday comforts (even personal hygiene!) for a few short days as you purify the soul. Print the articles out and share with roommates. Evaluate yourself before leaving for Hajj. Really take yourself to account. As one experienced Hajji stated, “Look at your personal weaknesses and flaws. Make tawbah (repentance) for all the sins you are committing and all the weaknesses you have. Do not go to Hajj with the intention of continuing on any known sin when you return. Your intention needs to be that you will discontinue it and fight it. This is very important. Hajj is not something a person does many times-so make sure you receive the full reward for completing it. Do not risk an unaccepted Hajj.” She also emphasized, “Don’t let the spirit of the group affect your spirit. If people on the bus are talking and socializing and you feel like doing the talbiyah then go ahead and start instead of wondering why others aren’t.” Keep good companionship during the trip. I was blessed to have good friends as roommates during my journey. You might observe different types of people in your group: the complainers, the chit-chatters, the Debbydowners, etc. If you feel distracted then keep to yourself since you don’t want the negativity to rub off and affect your experience. Make a pact with yourself that you will come back from Hajj and keep the complaints to yourself. There might be things that you don’t like but you will hold those complaints in your heart and share constructive criticism with the group organizer. Good friends

For a few people, Hajj will be an ongoing journey as they come back home and try to implement lessons in patience, physical sacrifice, and complete submission. As one scholar advised, “Take your Hajj back home with you. Don Martin: The 438 days of Parliament that changed Canada, for better or worse By: Don Martin, Power Play Host Let’s get the obvious out of the way first in delivering a eulogy to the 42nd Parliament, which has been put out of its misery after 438 sitting days over 3.5 years. The back bench MPs are still largely voteon-command seat warmers in the House of Commons, the cabinet ministers just follow PMO-mandated orders and this prime minister’s office is no less control freakish or more transparent than the last one. Like rats teaching mice, the Liberals have learned to embrace what they vowed to reject from the Harper era to get their way. Colossal hodge-podge omnibus bills, dozens of time limits on debate, ministers reading staff-scripted non-answers to any question period – it’s all standard operating procedure now. And if there’s an Andrew Scheer

government to come, it will do precisely the same thing. But. But. But. If there’s a difference, it’s that there has been nation-defining change enacted over Justin Trudeau’s reign which cannot be dismissed as insignificant or unimpressive. We are now a nation where the right to choose a medically assisted death has become an option of last resort. The risk of a criminal record for simple possession of marijuana is a thing of the past with pardons coming for those convicted. A trans-provincial pipeline, which will move the motherlode of bitumen over the Rockies to west coast tankers, has been purchased by the government, re-approved by the cabinet and will soon be built by a Crown corporation. NAFTA was renegotiated successfully over the whimsical tirades of a mercurial U.S.

president. Boil water advisories have been lifted in almost three-quarters of First Nations where they existed four years ago, killer whales and dolphins will no longer be allowed in captivity and air passengers will have rights. Gender balancing of cabinet is now almost a political imperative, parents have the most lucrative child benefit in history and the Senate is starting to flex its muscles as a real check against bad government bills. Of course, this Parliament saw real achievement offset by broken promises, extreme antagonism in the Commons contrasted by too many apologies for ancient actions and a prime minister devoting an entire Question Period to personally not answering anything with useful information. And so, the sun has finally set on this parlia-

ment, fittingly on the longest day of the year. Unfortunately, the long-range forecast calls for electorate-polarizing storm clouds, lightning bolts from the leaders and the constant political swirl of debris-filled hot political air. Let the campaign begin. Source: ctvnews.ca

Don Martin: If Scheer wants to be the PM he needs a credible climate plan True, he got some dream attack material on Thursday. The Parliamentary Budget Officer says the Trudeau government can’t achieve the Paris Accord targets unless it whacks Canadians with a $102 per tonne carbon emissions price, which equates to a 23-cents-per-litre carbon pump up. But the a-ha! gloating that will unleash is not early enough to sustain a Conservative campaign into the October election. The secret for any successful politician is to sense which way the public opinion parade is going – and By: Don Martin, Power Play Host jump in front of it. And polls already show a He doesn’t need to be the jolly green giant. party’s environmental plan – or lack of one But if Conservative leader Andrew Scheer – will sway votes. September blizzard in Quebec and climate

change would quickly be elevated into a topof-mind voter issue in the heat of the fall campaign. What’s clear now is that the Liberal carbon tax falls far short of hitting the targets. It could and perhaps should be perceived as a tax collected and rebated as an election bribe. But Canadians still crave tangible ways to participate in lowering emissions and curbing pollution. That could come in the form of home efficiency enticements, electric car inducements or, perish the thought, perhaps an accelerated embrace of the Trudeau government’s planned ban on single-use plastics. If the Conservative green scheme is simply rooted in tax credits for companies exporting clean technology around the world, that

will rightly be seen as a weasel way of doing not much, particularly if the receiving country doesn’t agree with the plan. Scheer needs a blueprint which dramatically slashes motoring emissions without deploying the most effective weapon to accomplish it, which is carbon taxation. He has to force large industrial emitters to curb output without applying penalties making them uncompetitive with countries that don’t impose carbon pricing. And he has to do this without costing consumers more than the current carbon tax. All that still won’t make him a jolly green giant. But failure to deliver on this tall order will ensure Andrew Scheer falls short of his prime ministerial ambitions. That’s the Last Word. Source: ctvnews.ca

Starting Sunday, Canadians will begin to see which third-party groups will be spending money to sway their votes in the upcoming federal election. As of June 30, groups that aren’t political parties but want a say in the fall campaign will need to register with Elections Canada if they spend more than $500 on political activities, and file interim disclosure forms once they raise or spend more than $10,000. Groups such as Engage Canada and Shaping Canada’s Future stole the spotlight earlier this month with duelling ads during the NBA Finals (Engage Canada attacked the Conservatives; Shaping Canada’s Future went after Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau), while groups such as Canada Proud will

likely be spending big in the coming months. But more than half the more than $6 million directly spent on electioneering by third parties in the 2015 election was shelled out by the top 10 organizations, most of which are unions. Those tallies are just for the 78day election period in 2015. Now, new rules on advertising disclosure will show how much groups are spending in the months before the campaign officially begins. Bill C-76, the election-reform law passed by Parliament in December, sets limits for third parties of just over $1 million in the “prewrit period,” and about $500,000 in the election period. In any given electoral district though, those limits are $10,000 and $5,000. At least one union group will be trying to

reach that limit, and has already spent on ads prior to the start of the pre-election period. “We’re all in,” said Jerry Dias, national president of Unifor, the country’s largest privatesector union. “We’re entitled to spend $511,000 in the writ period -- we’re going to spend $511,000” he added. “There is no question, we will be very aggressive.” An outspoken critic of conservative politicians both federally and provincially, Dias said his focus will be on supporting Liberal or NDP candidates and incumbents in winnable ridings. Dias said Unifor will put more emphasis than ever on social-media spending. Digital advertising on platforms like Facebook and

Twitter has, he said, greater reach than traditional means. But for some of 2015’s top spenders, the mood is more cautious. Source: ctvnews.ca

Ottawa, ON – This morning media reported that the Trudeau Liberals had appointed 5 individuals with close relationships to a senior Liberal cabinet minister to judicial appointments in New Brunswick. In response, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, released the following statement: “Once again, the Trudeau Liberals have been caught red-handed abusing the power of their offices to reward their rich

and powerful friends. “Canadians saw this during the SNC-Lavalin corruption scandal, when Justin Trudeau tried to protect his corporate friends. They saw it when Trudeau handed millions of dollars to Loblaw’s, a multi- billion company, to buy new fridges. And they’re seeing it again today, with close personal friends of a Trudeau minister getting government appointments. “Of course, Trudeau has set the tone for this government. He was the first Prime Minis-

ter in Canadian history to be found guilty of violating Canada’s Conflict of Interest laws, which sent a message to his entire cabinet that it’s okay to play fast and loose with the rules to reward their friends and punish their enemies.“When it comes to Justin Trudeau and the Liberals it has always been about who you know, not what you know. This gives them hope that if they can just get out, they will be given refuge. “It is vital for Western nations to step up in these situations, welcome these victimised women, and help them start a new life free from repression. Eventually, the societies in the Gulf will realise the urgent necessity

of change and reform, but this will not happen if women like Dua and Dalal are forcibly returned to the countries they have risked everything to escape. A high profile case like Haya can have tremendous impact in educating the world about what women suffer in the Gulf; but it must not divert our attention from the case of Dua and Dalal who could otherwise be seized, deported, and disappeared while the media spotlight is directed at a princess.” Source: https://www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/stirling-

Want to vote in the 2019 federal election?

The criteria is pretty simple: you must be a Canadian citizen 18 or older and have ID

DURHAM — Voters across the country will go to the polls when Canadians cast their ballot for the next federal government in October. The 43rd Canadian Parliament will be elected on Monday, Oct. 21, with the governing Liberal party, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, looking to keep their hold on the House of Commons from challengers Andrew Scheer of the Conservative party and the NDP with Jagmeet Singh at the helm.

The Green party under Elizabeth May is seeking official party status. Voters will also have a new party to choose from in 2019, with Maxime Bernier leading the People’s Party of Canada. The criteria for voting in the 2019 federal election is pretty simple: to register and vote in a federal election, you must be a Canadian citizen aged 18 or older on election day and provide accepted proof of identity and address. Elections Canada takes many steps to keep voter registration information for millions of Canadians accurate and up-to-date, as well as to safeguard the integrity of voter registrations. Voter registration information is managed using the National Register of Electors — a permanent database of Canadians who are eligible to vote in federal elections, byelections and referendums. The register is continually updated through a range of sources, including the Canada Revenue Agency; Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (new citizens); provincial and territorial driver’s licence and vital statistics agencies; and information supplied by electors when they register to vote or update their registration.

Elections Canada mails voter registration notification letters to people who may be eligible to vote, but who are not registered. Those letters are mailed a few times a year, mostly outside election periods, to invite people to register. About three weeks before election day, Elections Canada mails personalized voter information cards to registered electors. The card tells them that they are registered to vote. It also tells them when and where to vote, the different ways they can vote, and how to get more information. Voter turnout for the 2015 federal election was the highest since 1993 (69.6 per cent), with 68.3 per cent of eligible Canadians (17,711,983 of 25,939,742) casting a ballot. A record-low 58.8 per cent of eligible Canadians voted in 2008, but that figure climbed to 61.1 per cent in 2011. Dismal turnouts were also recorded in 2004 (60.9 per cent) and 2000 (61.2 per cent). The highest recorded turnout for a federal

ten overlooked in national polls but could play a decisive role in the October federal election. Conducted by Public Square Research and Maru/Blue for CBC News, the poll ran between May 31 and June 10, interviewing 4,500 Canadians online. The survey included a sample of 3,000 eligible voters and additional samples of 500 respondents from each of three targeted demographics: first-time voters, new Canadians and Indigenous people. The poll shows that these groups often view the issues very differently from other Canadi-

ans, influencing how they will cast their ballots in the fall. ndigenous voters abandoning the Liberals The Liberals made significant inroads among Indigenous people in the 2015 federal election. In polling divisions located entirely on First Nations reserves, the party captured 40.5 per cent of the vote — an increase of nearly 28 percentage points over 2011. But the poll suggests the party has lost a lot of the support they gained four years ago.

Indigenous and first-time voters split, new Canadians still prefer Liberals: CBC News poll

Poll breaks down the political views of some of the key demographics in the fall federal election By: Éric Grenier · CBC News New Canadians are still backing the Liberals, Indigenous voters have abandoned the party in droves and first-time voters are leaning disproportionately toward the New Democrats and the Greens and away from the Conservatives — if they intend to vote at all. These are the findings of a poll commissioned by CBC News. It offers a glimpse into the politics of a few demographic groups that are of-

England crush New Zealand with 119-run victory to reach World Cup semi-finals England scored a comprehensive 119-run victory in their must-win match against New Zealand at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday. Eoin Morgan’s side scored 305-8 in their 50 overs as Jonny Bairstow, player of the match, topscored with 106 and Jason Roy hit 60. The tournament hosts then bowled out New Zealand for 186 to guarantee a top-four finish in the 10-team group stage. England, who have never won the competition, are into the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1992. As soon as the match was over, the commentators at ESPN Cricinfo began speculating what the semi final composition could look like given today’s win, whether Pakistan have a chance, and considering the fact that Australia and India are already through.“Pakistan will

need to beat Bangladesh by 316 runs at Lord’s on Friday to oust New Zealand. That is, if they score 400, they need to keep Bangladesh to 84 or less. The exact margin will change depending on scores. It’s not over yet!” they said. As things stand, England are in line to face India, currently second, but it is still possible for Virat Kohli’s men to leapfrog Australia at the top of the standings. If England do play India it will be a repeat of Sunday’s match at the Birmingham ground when, following back-to-back defeats by Sri Lanka and Australia, they inflicted a first reverse upon Kohli’s side. The opening semi-final between the first and fourthplaced sides is scheduled for Old Trafford next Tuesday Source dawn.com.

Bangladesh’s World Cup hopes come crashing down as India win by 28 runs India defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs, dashing its hopes of making it through to the semifinals as the two sides met at Edgbaston on Tuesday. Bangladesh were given a target of 315 runs by India to pursue.‘The Tigers’, as they are otherwise known, had needed to win both of their remaining matches and hope New Zealand beat England if they were to go through to the semifinals. On the other hand, India need to win one of their two remaining group games to be certain of reaching a third successive World Cup semi-final. With their victory against Bangladesh, the Men in Blue booked their place in the semi-finals, join-

ing reigning title-holders Australia in the last four with a match to spare. For the second match in a row, India’s Rohit Sharma was dropped in single figures and made a hundred. Sharma’s 104, his fourth century of the World Cup, helped take India to 314-9 despite Mustafizur Rahman’s 5-59. That proved too much for the Tigers, who were dismissed for 286 with two overs to spare, India spearhead Jasprit Bumrah taking 4-55. Bangladesh face Pakistan in their last group match at Lord’s on Friday. India meet Sri Lanka on the final day of the round-robin phase on Saturday. Source dawn.com

Making the Links: The climate crisis, militarism and war

By:Furqan Gehlen World BEYOND War Metro Vancouver chapter held their first event in Surrey at the City Centre Library on June 23, 2019. World BEYOND War’s mission is to end all wars and dismantle the very institution of war and militarism. Tamara Lorincz, a renowned Peace Activist was the guest speaker. She is a PhD student in Global Governance at the Balsillie School for International Affairs (Wilfrid Laurier University). She is the recipient of the Rotary International World Peace Fellowship at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom and was a senior researcher for the International Peace Bureau in Switzerland. Tamara is currently on the board of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and the international board of directors of Global Network Against Nuclear Power and Weapons in Space. She is a member of the Canadian Pugwash Group and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Tamara has an LLB/JSD and MBA specializing in environmental law and management from Dalhousie University. Her current research is on the climate and environmental impacts of the military. Tamara’s talk highlighted the enormous carbon footprint of the Canadian military and

the wide ranging environmental damage caused by the military to the soil, air and water. She outlined how the military’s environmental impact is not tracked and how over $32 Billion of taxpayers money is spent each year on the military. This money needs to be phased out of the military and towards a green economy, health, education, poverty alleviation and other much needed services. This new chapter is made up of the following members of the organizing committee: Affan Bajwa, Asad Syed, Ashraf Muhammad, Carol Zhong, Furquan Gehlen, Lynn Armstrong, Raqiya Mohammad, Shehla Nasir. The chapter’s goal is to support World BEYOND War’s mission of ending all wars and the institution of war and militarism. The chapter plans to hold educational, and other events regularly. They will also be starting various campaigns such as Canada out of NATO, Divestment from militarism and an election campaign so that ending wars and militarism is a visible issue in the lead up to the election. One other goal of the chapter is to link and connect with the other various local groups working in the anti-war, peace, human rights and environmental crisis area so as to support our collective efforts. Some future events that are coming up are:

1. Talk: David Swanson on “How to End U.S. and Canadian Wars” Monday, August 05, 2019 • 2:00 PM - Newton Recreation Centre, 13730 72 Ave, Surrey 2. Talk: David Swanson on “Growing the Movement for a World BEYOND War” Monday, August 05, 2019 • 6:00 PM, Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, 800 East Broadway, Vancouver 3. #NoWar2019 is coming to Limerick, Ireland this October 5-6, World BEYOND War’s 4th annual global conference. 4. #NoWar2020 “Divest, Disarm, and Demilitarize: Conversion for a Peaceful, Green, & Just Future” Conference, Peace Festival, Mass protest against CANSEC - Ottawa from May 26-30, 2020

Join the chapter by signing the declaration of peace on the website at https://worldbeyondwar.org/individual/ . After signing, you will be placed on the email list so that you are notified of future events in the area. You can follow the chapters Facebook page. Just search for “World Beyond War Vancouver”. In order to succeed in our mission we need to have lots of engaged people that are part of this movement and are ready to take part in a focused, action oriented, sustained and persistent set of actions and campaigns. If you are interested in being part of the organizing committee, or a sub-committee you can contact the chapter coordinator Furquan Gehlen at furquan@worldbeyondwar. org or call at 604-603-8741.

How to Sustain Intimacy as a Retired Couple ?

Adjusting to a new lifestyle can be a challenge —and test a relationship.

W

By: Murray Lewis hen you’re preparing for retirement, financial planning becomes a top priority, but your relationship with your partner is going to need attention, too. With re-

tirement freeing up so much time, it can cause problems for many couples. When one partner joins another in retirement, he or she may in effect be invading the other’s space if the other person has become accustomed to having a lot of time alone. And with so much free time, it can be tempting to spend time together 24/7, but experts say couples are better off striving for a balance between being together and being apart. Having separate groups of friends or different hobbies can help. That’s not to say it isn’t worth it to sign up for a class together, since learning something new together can also build intimacy. You don’t want to live separate lives—it’s simply a matter of balance and respecting each others boundaries. Sustaining intimacy can become particularly difficult should your partner fall ill and you become

the primary caregiver. Once you start taking on that responsibility, your partner may experience guilt watching you juggle so much. To ease feelings of resentment and tension, it can help to do chores and run other errands while the other isn’t around. You can also look for small ways for your partner to still help out around the house or with errands. While your routines will have to be adjusted, you can still organize your lives to spend time and do the same things together as before. Respite centres or residential care may also become necessary to prevent caregiver burnout. That separation stands to break down intimacy, increasing the other’s risk of becoming isolated and depressed. To limit feelings of abandonment, caregivers should make sure to organize visits from family or friends, and make sure to call or text their partner regularly.

Only Half of Canadians Get a Shot Before Overseas Travel Most of us know that travelling overseas can put us at risk but never bother to protect ourselves

Despite that, a recent poll shows only half of Canadians decided to get vaccinated before travelling overseas. The vast majority of Canadians—78 per cent— according to a poll conducted on behalf of London Drugs (which offers vaccinations in its pharmacies)—agree that travelling outside of Canada can put you at risk of catching a vaccinepreventable-disease such as hepatitis A

Canada Day

t is nice to have every thing on our finger tips. Yesterday, was Canada Day and we wanted to see the fireworks. I checked on my smart phone all the details, events and timings. I could even see the previous years’ fireworks. The point being, modern technology is very advance insofar that one needn’t ask any one for the details any more. Wow Factor Isn’t it amazing that any aspect of our life, one can google it and see our private details on social media websites. One can read reviews of many things on the internet as well. In our days, it was difficult to watch a live match but today you can not only watch live matches with ease but see decades worth of events on the internet with ease. Some things Don’t Change The spirit of enjoying the game, the craze for the game has not changed but it has become more commercialized than ever before. However, our emotional needs have not changed; we demand love, affection, attention, respect, friendship, stability, success and fulfillment just like we did 50 years ago. It shifts from situation to situation. We are still the same human beings that were born 50 years ago to someone being born today. That will one day grow up and

study hard and work hard for a living. The point being that our bodies have remained the same whilst our standard of living luxuries of life have drastically changed. Despite the emergence of technology, we won’t be able to get rid of our human needs

and therefore we will fall short of balance if we go in excess in either. Our cultures and their mindsets were different 50 years ago than today; the culture may shift but our religion will be applicable in all times. Our children often hear that in their par-

and B, yellow fever, typhoid, or traveller’s diarrhea. While the federal government recommends that all Canadians consult a travel clinic before a trip overseas, the message isn’t getting to everyone: the same poll found that only three in 10 Canadians are aware that they should take this precaution. As a handful of measles cases have surfaced in Canada and the United States this last year, more pharmacies are now recommending that vaccine, as well. Just this month, New Brunswick had to secure 20,000 doses of the measles vaccine after 12 people in the Saint John region contracted the disease.

We draw the line, where our Lord asks us to, as He owns us and to Him shall we return. Every now and then, families have argu-

ments on boundaries for their children and many children take advantage of the freedom they are given. Later in their lives, parents will often cry on the path their children took but it all has to start from an early age. No one grows up to desire a ca-

Even if your destination is unlikely to put you at risk, diseases such as these can still be spread at airports—with the Vancouver airport announcing a measles exposure warning recently, as did Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia and Los Angeles International Airport. The sooner you can get to a pharmacy the better. Most travel vaccinations give you immunity only two weeks after being administered. reer of drugs or alcoholism. We need to be mature and set our boundaries even if we have technology at our finger tips. Solution Balance is required in all things. Communication is one way to start that. One also must be clear in setting boundaries and sticking to ones principles. We cannot be like a feather that the wind blows us in whatever direction it wills. Support is the bedrock of any family and without that, one may as well call each other strangers. The young need to realise that they cannot foster a home where “everything goes” and one does whatever the nafs wants it to do; an enslavement if you will of the human being. And the parents need to know that one does not nurture positive morals by way of control but rather communication. Otherwise we have achieved nothing than our predecessors beside some new technological advances. Asma Shums <asmashums@gmail.com

Zaira Wasim’s decision to quit Bollywood ‘for faith’ stirs debate

Kashmiri teenager’s decision to stop acting in films since it clashes with her Islamic faith sparks social media debate.

By Bilal Kuchay New Delhi, India - A teenage Muslim actress’s decision to quit Bollywood, saying she was not happy with her work since it was taking her away from her faith, has triggered a social media debate in India. On Sunday, Zaira Wasim, 18, wrote a long post on Facebook, which she later shared on Twitter and Instagram, saying she was bidding adieu to what many referred to as a “promising” career in the Indian film industry. “This field indeed brought a lot of love, support, and applause my way, but what it also did was to lead me to a path of ignorance, as I silently and unconsciously transitioned out of ‘imaan’ [faith],” Wasim said in her post. “While I continued to work in an environment that consistently interfered with my ‘imaan’, my relationship with my religion was threatened,” the teenager, who has acted in two films so far, wrote.

T

Wasim, who hails from Srinagar - the capital city of Indiaadministered Kashmir - rose to fame in 2016 when she made her debut in “Dangal” (Wrestling Match), which also starred superstar Aamir Khan.”Dangal” was inspired by the real-life story of two successful wrestling sisters from Haryana state in India’s north. The teenager played one of Khan’s two daughters in the movie, which became a mega Bollywood hit and grossed over $20bn worldwide. Wasim won widespread praise and several awards for the film, including the prestigious National Film Award for best supporting actress in 2017. “Five years ago, I made a decision that changed my life forever. As I stepped my foot in Bollywood, it opened doors of massive popularity for me. I started to become the prime candidate of public attention, I was projected as the gospel of the idea of success and was often identified as a role model for the youth,” the 18-year-old said in her post. “However, that’s never something that I set out to do or become, especially with regards to my ideas of success and failure, which I had just started to explore and understand.” Wasim said she had “struggled” to become “someone else” for a long time. “… though I may fit here perfectly, I do not belong here,” she wrote. In Wasim’s second film, the 2017 runaway hit “Secret Superstar” starring Khan again, she played a burqa-clad Muslim teenager, who

dreams of becoming a singer but faces opposition from her conservative father. Undeterred, she follows her passion by anonymously posting her songs on the internet. Al Jazeera’s calls and messages to Wasim, asking for her response to disappointment and questions over her decision to quit films, went unanswered.

Support and criticism

“I don’t know what made you take this tough decision, but I am feeling sad,” a fan named Khushboo Kapoor commented on Wasim’s Facebook post, which had more than 17,000 comments and was shared over 13,000 times. Former Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon suggested Wasim could have exited “gracefully” and kept her “regressive views” to herself. Many felt Wasim’s departure from films would make it harder for other Muslim women in India to pursue a career in cinema. Actor Mohommed Ali Shah told Al Jazeera that while Wasim’s decision to quit acting because of her religion “should be respected”, she could have done it “quietly”. ”She should have left quietly and not made it public as it sets a wrong precedent for other Muslim actresses who have worked hard to earn their name in the field,” he said. Twitter user Ifra Jan said Wasim’s post has made it “difficult for every Muslim woman to choose an unconventional career”. “As if our society wasn’t enough!” she posted. “But please don’t leave spitting at an industry, audience that gave you so much,” she added. However, in an article for The Quint website, Hiba Beg questioned the “messiah complex” behind “saving” Muslim women. “We must stop using Muslim women as victims to make ourselves feel better about our own choices,” she wrote. “Stop playing saviours to a community that did not ask for your help - it is quite simple.”

Debates on religion

Since Wasim belongs to the disputed Kashmir region - India’s only Muslim-majority state - social media debates tended to weigh in on how “permissive” Islam was towards Muslims acting in films, especially women. Delhi-based Islamic scholar Ali Ahmed Qasmi told Al Jazeera that working in films was prohibited in Islam for both men and women, as he welcomed Wasim’s decision. “Women, according to Islam, are not even allowed to speak or meet people from outside their family. How can it be right then to work in films where they have to expose their bodies?” he said. Barkha Dutt, India’s leading TV journalist, said she was “deeply disturbed at the indoctrination of religious conservatism” behind Wasim’s departure from films. ”Choice is sometimes a complicated word,” Dutt posted, leading to a spirited discussion, in which many Muslims also came to the actress’s defence. Omar Abdullah, former chief minister of the Jammu and Kashmir state, questioned the people criticising the teenager’s decision. “Who are any of us to question Zaira Wasim’s choices? It’s her life to do with as she pleases,” he said. “All I will do is wish her well and hope that whatever she does makes her happy.” Film critic Stutee Ghosh told Al Jazeera it was normal for people to be surprised and shocked because Wasim was a “role model, not only for the Kashmiris but even otherwise”. “At a time when religious fundamentalism is on the rise, choice and agency, especially for women, becomes complicated,” she said. “One can hope that Zaira has taken the decision on her own and not under any duress.” Wasim’s third film “The Sky Is Pink”, alongside Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar, is set to release later this year and could be her last appearance in Bollywood. Are cell phones ruining family time?

he way you use your mobile device around your family can affect your relationships. Cell phones can make you feel more connected, but they also can distract you and your family from connecting with each other in person. Your view on whether it’s okay to use cell phones during family time is likely related to how often you use your own phone around your family. While some people need to check their phones for work or emergency purposes, it’s important to model and prioritize putting away phones and to engage in face-to-face communication. Some people have trouble putting away their cell phone even when it causes problems. They might feel a lack of control over how often they pick up their phone or how long they use it. They might feel the need to constantly check it without a real reason or feel upset if they don’t have access to the phone. Using a cell phone for work purposes during family time can increase distress and strain on a family. While using their cell phones, parents talk to their kids less, respond more

slowly, and overreact to being interrupted. And snubbing your partner while on the phone (“phubbing”) is linked to lower relationship satisfaction among couples.

To assess whether cell phones are getting in the way of your family’s time together, ask yourself how much you use your own phone when you’re together. Maybe there’s an opportunity to cut back. Doing so can benefit you, your partner, your kids, and your relationships. Once you’ve given some thought to your own cell phone use (and what you might be modeling for your family), think about the rules you want your family to follow when you’re together. To get your family on the same page, call a family meeting. Review each person’s current cell phone use, what’s working, and areas where you think some changes might help. If you have kids, ask their opinions on your own cell phone use. You might be surprised by what they have to share. Use good communication skills by practicing active listening and showing curiosity about what each family

member has to say. Consider the following questions and agree on a family media plan that works for everyone. What does appropriate use of cell • phones look like for our family? • Can we agree to place all cell phones on silent, in a basket, or out of view during mealtimes and other family time? • When do we want to use cell phones to play family games together? • How does everyone feel about limiting cell phone use during family outings?

Quality time together strengthens family resilience. People rate the quality of their conversations as “significantly higher” when smartphones are not present, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, or mood. Less cellphone use also usually means less screen time, which enables kids to get outdoors and be more physically active. When teens spend more time actively engaged with their parents, they tend to set higher educational goals.
