‘Kashmir women are the biggest victims of this inhumane siege’
Sense of fear deepens as Indian politicians stoke misogyny with talk of freedom to marry ‘white-skinned’ Kashmiri women.
S
rinagar, Indian-Administered Kashmir - After August 5, when India revoked Kashmir’s special status and followed the move with a military lockdown, Uzma Javed did not leave her house for days. Every few hours, she looked out of the window from her family’s two-storey house in Srinagar, the largest city in Indian-Administered Kashmir. A 20-year-old student who usually lives in Kerala, Javed had returned home to spend Eid with her relatives. But instead of celebrating, she found herself caged in while outside, armed Indian paramilitary forces manned largely empty streets. A few civilians negotiated with troops to allow them to cross razor wire coils laid across the road. “At present everyone in Kashmir is being immensely subjugated. But women are the biggest victims of this inhumane siege,” she told Al Jazeera. Javed was particularly worried about a female friend who lives close by, who she had not heard from in over a week. “I don’t know how Munaza is doing. The men somehow manage to sneak out for prayers … We can’t even do that.” The sight of armed forces “petrifies me”, she said, adding: “I don’t even want my brother and father to go out at all but there is no option. They need to go to get bread and other daily necessities.” Recently, a large protest, which turned violent as demonstrators clashed with Indian forces, passed outside Javed’s home. She was alone with her mother, concerned that her brother and father were among the protesters. When they returned home later that night, Javed had to go to hospital - her blood pressure had shot up. We feel persecuted, even more than the men of the valley today. Article 370 of the Indian constitution had granted autonomy to the region. After it was revoked, India
put Kashmir under a complete military lockdown. Phone and internet lines were shut off, leaving more than seven million people in the region unable to contact the outside world. India has said that communications have now been partially restored. Before announcing the decision, one of the government’s arguments for scrapping Article 370 was that it would lead to gender equality and the “emancipation” of women in the Muslim-majority region. But days later, a number of the politicians with India’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made sexist comments directed towards Kashmiri women. On August 10, Manohar Lal Khattar, chief minister of Haryana, was quoted as saying: “Some people are now saying that as Kashmir is open, brides will be brought from there. But jokes apart, if [the gender] ratio is improved, then there will be a right balance in society.” Earlier, the BJP’s Vikram Saini, a Member of the Legislative Assembly, said: “Muslim party workers should rejoice in the new provisions. They can now marry the white-skinned women of Kashmir.” Nivedita Menon, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, said: “These are proclamations of conquest and plunder, and reveal the real intention behind the abrogation of 370.” The misogyny also spread online, with posts on social media networks carrying a similar theme. And according to reports, “How to marry Kashmir women” was increasingly Googled after August 5. “The way women of Kashmir are exoticised and objectified on a daily basis in India, the way their bodies are portrayed as vulnerable and used to create fear and intimidation, has heightened the sense of being preyed upon,” said Samreen, a 22-year-old make-up artist from Srinagar. “We
feel persecuted, e v e n m o r e than the men of the valley today.” Wit h communications lines shut off, Samreen was unable to contact her sister in New Delhi. “I wanted to book a ticket to just see if she is okay. We can’t even do that,” she said. To book a flight, she would have to go to the airport, some 20 kilometres away. “My mother has been worried sick,” she said, adding she had attempted to get to the airport on a scooter with her father but the presence of Indian security forces prevented her. Misbah Rehsi, a 22-year-old Srinagar resident, was unsurprised at the growing sexism, explaining that the BJP’s attempt to position itself as a “saviour” for Muslim women is not genuine. “I hope the people of India are able to comprehend the misogyny that runs in the party and see how there isn’t actually any intention of protecting and saving Kashmiri women,” she said. “It’s of course communal and hate-filled. But in the larger context, it plays with the ideas of taking vengeance of what happened 500 years ago under Muslim rule in India, irrespective of the fact that half of it is just lies.” Systematic sexual abuse and other forms of gender-based violence are often deployed as weapons in war. Kavita Krishnan, a member of the Communist Party of India (CPIM), took activists from India to Kashmir after August 5. She said women and girls were anxious given the increased paramilitary and military presence. “They told us they had found it extremely difficult between August 5 and 9 to even get milk and vegetables for their kids, due to the total curfew. They were also deeply distressed at the widespread illegal de-
tention of children as young as nine or 10 years old, and teenagers.” Krishnan added that some of the women and girls also spoke of their fears of “being molested during such raids”. Previous allegations of mass rape Indian forces have previously been accused of sexual assault in Kashmir. On February 23, 1991, as India carried out a large military operation, soldiers allegedly raped more than 30 women in two villages, Kunan and Poshpora, in the Kupwara district The Indian Army has always denied the allegations. But in a July report, the UN said: “There has been no progress in the Kunan Poshpora mass-rape case from 1991, and authorities continue to thwart attempts of the survivors to get justice.” It also called on India to “investigate and prosecute all cases of sexual violence allegedly perpetrated by state and non-state actors, and provide reparations to victims”. As tensions prevailed in Kashmir, with continued protests and widescale arrests amid the clampdown, Janees Lanker, a 22-year-old Masters student from Srinagar, reflected on the roots of misogyny. As well as blaming the political class for encouraging sexist attitudes, she also pointed to the portrayal of Kashmiri women in Indian cinema. “Kashmiri women are shown as these innocent, naive, dolled up beings,” she said, “which is nothing less than objectifying them.” Her social media feeds, she said, are peppered with memes showing “fair girls with a hijab” as objects of sexual desire, “and it’s disgusting.” Delhi-based historian Irfan Habib believes the language emanating from some sections of the BJP is being used to whip up support among the party’s majority Hindu base. “It’s of course communal and hatefilled,” he told Al Jazeera. “But in the larger context, it plays with the ideas of taking vengeance of what happened 500 years ago under Muslim rule in India, irrespective of the fact that half of it is just lies.”

‘U.S.A.-U.K. -U.N.’!
By: Gulshan Alani United State of America, United Kingdom, & United Nation! It indicates Magic word ‘United’: Most unique titles with the unique meanings. United’ state, United Kingdom, and United Nation. These are magic words: all states, Kingdom and nations united. Whoever created the above titles must have an honest aim to unite the nations of different color, culture and religion. That is visible in the different multicultural, multi-faith citizens in these countries. People are allowed to travel to and from these countries without any fear. Although, even after such effort of keeping ‘all united’ there has always been political disputes, discrimination, cultural, tribal, and religious hatred among people. Though, the increase of hatred is
changing the concept of ‘United’, and it seems we are more divided. The recent turmoil of religious hatred, mainly Islam, genocide, ethnic cleansing, White supremacy, Gun violence, shooting and killing of innocents; is most fearful era proving we are in an era of anti-Christ-and anti-GOD. Many blame such increased hatred, created by U. S. President Trump’s rhetoric against migrants and Muslims, and his recent most condemned, his support of Israeli Government’s bald faced racism and repression of denying entry to Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib being barred from visiting her family in Israel, is drawing loud condemnation from all corners and across the political spectrum. On the other side of the coin whenever we hear President Trump talking about his achievements and success, increase of employment, ‘American Energy & Manufacturing’ (Ref. CPAC-C-Span) he sounds completely different respectful person, perhaps he is with 2 personality, but he is not
the killer, nor he is the hypocrite hidden enemy like the Wolf hiding under the coat of a Sheep. Isn’t it true that an open enemy is better than the hidden enemy? However, the worst situation of ‘Kashmiri’ people is completely ignored by the ‘United Nation’. Why such silence? It’s a shame U. N. is not speaking up against such atrocities including evil treatment and violation of human rights of Palestinians. Generally, such silence indicates complicit in such evil actions. The perception of silence is: “Silence of good people empowers evil”. Is U. N. under pressure of some kind or so fearful of P.M. Modi who is now known as the re-born Hitler who wants to get rid off Kashmiris who are one of the 12 tribes of Bani-Israel-people of Prophet Israel-Jacob (AS). Torturing them will definitely bring GOD’S wrath on Modi for his evil actions.

SC urged to make sure institutions respect constitution
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) vice chairman Syed Amjad Shah on Tuesday questioned the role of the Supreme Court, asking if the top judiciary was successful in ensuring that other pillars of the state like parliament functioned independently within their remit as defined in the Constitution.“Unfortunately suffocation reigns supreme in the present po-
litical dispensation,” Mr Shah regretted, adding that efforts were afoot by certain state agencies and institutions to curb dissenting voices of all kind. “Should such institutions be allowed to intrude upon the domain of others contrary to what is enshrined in the Constitution and whether the apex court was effective in checking such creeping encroachment on part of cer-
tain institutions,” he said while speaking at a full-court reference held at the Supreme Court in honour of Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed on reaching superannuation. Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Attorney General Anwar Mansoor and Supreme Court Bar Association President Amanullah Kanrani also spoke at the event which was also attended by Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the SC judge who is facing a presidential reference in the Supreme Judicial Council. In a strongly worded speech in Urdu, Amjad Shah said the PBC stood firm behind the armed forces, adding the entire legal community realised and supported the de-

fence requirements and its importance, especially in view of the current volatile international situation. “But interference in political matters always erodes the prestige of such institutions, especially at a time when Pakistan is at a crossroads and cannot afford even eventuality,” he added.
2 dead, 4 injured as remote AJK valley hit by ‘indiscriminate’ Indian shelling Considered previously to be ‘comparatively’ safe, the remote Gurez sub-valley in the upper belt of the Neelum district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) was heavily shelled by Indian troops from across the Line of Control (LoC) on Tuesday, leaving two civilians dead and four others wounded, local officials said. Gurez lies beyond Kel — located some 156 kilometres northeast of Muzaffarabad — and is spread over 44 kilometres till Taobutt, the last village of the Neelum district. Unlike the lower belt of the Neelum district,
where the Neelum River serves as the boundary between Azad Kashmir and occupied Kashmir, the Gurez sub-valley is situated on both sides of the river and has therefore been less vulnerable to cross LoC firing. However, on Tuesday, this area was hit “indiscriminately” by Indian troops with mortar guns, according to Akhtar Ayub, a disaster management officer based in Athmuqam. Athmuqam is the district headquarters of Neelum valley, located some 84 kilometres northeast of Muzaffarabad. In Halmat vil-
lage, Abdul Jalil Shah, 40, son of Samad Shah, was killed after being hit by splinters from an exploding shell, Ayub said. Three-year-old Nosheen, daughter of Muhammad Ramzan, became an indirect victim, losing her life from psychological shock as “the thunder of shells filled her with panic”, he added. The injured persons, who were admitted to a military-run health facility in Halmat, were identified as Ashfaq, son of Ghulam Muhammad Lone; Source: dawn.com/news

Gaza in state of alert after blasts kill two Palestinian Harvard student says US policemen: officials nixed visa after social media search
The Gaza Strip was in a “state of alert” on Wednesday after explosions killed two policemen in the Palestinian enclave, authorities said. The officers died in “two explosions targeting police checkpoints” late on Tuesday night, the interior ministry in the Hamascontrolled coastal territory said in a statement. The Israeli military denied carrying out an air strike, and Palestinian witnesses at the scene told AFP they had seen no aircraft overhead. The Gaza Strip, home to two million Palestinians, was in a “state of alert,” the ministry said and AFP journalists reported an increased Hamas presence on the main roads of the enclave. The authorities in Gaza did not specify the nature of the explosions. The Israeli military earlier on Tuesday bombed a Hamas military post after armed fighters in the Strip fired a mortar round across the border but said it had not carried out any air raids at night. Tuesday’s events were the latest in a string of cross-border incidents that have raised concerns of further escalation before Israel’s September 17 elections. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is fighting for re-election, with political opponents calling for tougher action against Hamas. On Monday, Israeli warplanes hit what the military said were “terror targets in
a Hamas military compound in the northern Gaza Strip, including the office of a Hamas battalion commander.” Israel also announced it was slashing by half the fuel it pipes to the strip’s main power station, meaning a cut to Gaza’s already meagre electricity supply. Israeli authorities have accused Hamas of being responsible for the latest violence, which undermines a truce brokered by the United Nations and Egypt that provides for an easing of the Israeli blockade of Gaza in return for an end to military operations from the Palestinian enclave. Specifically, the Israeli army accuses Hamas of not doing enough to contain its ally Islamic Jihad, which is considered close to Iran, an enemy of Israel. Since 2008, Israel has waged three wars on the Gaza Strip, killing thousands of people, mostly Palestinian civilians. Israel has long said it holds Hamas responsible for all violence from Gaza, while Hamas says Israel is responsible for the state of anger and pressure inflicted on Gaza’s residents due to the continued siege. The Gaza Health Ministry said that since the start of the weekly Great March of Return protests last year, the Israeli army has killed more than 300 demonstrators and wounded 17,000 others, who were officially referred to hospitals. Seven Israelis have also been killed. Source: Al-Jazeera
Amnesty calls on Lebanon to stop expulsion of Syrian refugees
Rights group says Beirut deported nearly 2,500 Syrians in ‘a clear violation of Lebanon’s non-refoulement obligation’.
Almost 2,500 Syrian refugees have been “forcibly deported” from Lebanon to their wartorn country over the past three months, a rights group has said, urging authorities to “immediately” halt the expulsions. In a statement on Tuesday, Amnesty International cited data from Lebanon’s General Security agency and the Lebanese government which that about 2,447 Syrians had been expelled between mid-May and August 9.General Security on May 13 started implementing an order from Lebanon’s Higher Defence Council to deport refugees who had entered the country irregularly after April 2019, it said. It was not immediately clear whether all those expelled had entered as such. “We urge the Lebanese authorities to stop these deportations as a matter of urgency,”
said Lynn Maalouf, Amnesty’s Middle East research director. Any attempt to forcibly return refugees is “a clear violation of Lebanon’s non-refoulement obligations”, she added.Non-refoulement is a principle of international law that bars governments from deporting people to countries where they would face persecution. There was no immediate comment by Lebanese authorities. Lebanon, a country of about 4.5 million people, says it hosts about 1.5 million Syrians, of which nearly a million are UN-registered refugees. Lebanese politicians routinely blame the country’s economic and other woes on Syrian refugees and the government has ratcheted up the pressure to send them back. In recent weeks, the labour ministry launched a crackdown on foreign workers without a permit, a move activists say is part of a campaign directed at Syrian refugees to force them to return home. Rights groups, meanwhile, have decried measures to make the lives of refugees increasingly difficult, including a June order for Syrian refugees to demolish their hard shelters. Last month, Human Rights Watch said the order applied to 3,500 - 3,600 families in the eastern region of Arsal. The demolition order is based on the 2004 Lebanese Construction Law Act, which NGOs that have long operated in the camps say that it has rarely, if ever, been enforced. Source: aljazeera.com
A Palestinian teenager admitted to Harvard University said he was detained for hours at Boston’s airport and refused entry into the United States after officers disapproved of his friends’ political comments on social media. Ismail Ajjawi, who lives in Lebanon, said that an officer also asked him about his religion during eight hours of questioning on Friday at Logan International Airport, according to an account he provided to the campus newspaper, The Harvard Crimson. After five hours of searching his phone and laptop, Ajjawi said that an officer called him into a room and “started screaming at me”. “She said that she found people posting political points of view that oppose the US on my friend(s’) list,” he said in the statement to the Crimson. The 17-year-old said that he protested that the comments came from friends and that he never posted his own political views but said his visa was nonetheless cancelled and he was sent home. The US Customs and Border Protection agency confirmed that it refused entry to Ajjawi but said it could not provide specific in-
formation due to reasons of privacy and law enforcement.“This individual was deemed inadmissible to the United States based on information discovered during the CBP inspection,” said Michael McCarthy, a spokesman for the agency. A State Department official said he could not legally discuss details of the case but added: “Generally US law does not authorise the refusal of visas based solely on political statements or views if those statements or views would be lawful in the United States.” Ajjawi said he hoped to resolve his case in time to start classes next week at Harvard, one of the world’s most prestigious universities, The Harvard Crimson said. President Donald Trump has made a tough line on immigration a signature issue, with his administration deciding to monitor the social media use of all visitors as well as legal immigrants. The move has prompted strong criticism from civil liberties advocates, who note that the US Constitution’s First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech. An alleged Thai separatist, who died in hospital following his interrogation by the military, has been laid to rest in his hometown in Pattani province as calls grow for an investigation into his death. Abdulloh Esormusor died on Sunday after 35 days in a coma following reports of torture while he was in custody. His death comes as warnings of violence in the restive southern province increase. On Tuesday, Thailand’s opposition Future Forward Party (FFP) called on the government to conduct an autopsy on Abdulloh’s body. In a statement on its official Facebook page, FFP said it is the “duty of all those involved” to answer questions about the circumstances leading to Abdulloh’s detention and death. The death of Abdulloh “puts the credibility of General Prayut and Thai military leaders on the line,” Sunai Phasuk, senior researcher on Thailand at Human Rights Watch (HRW), said, referring to Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha by his military title. “The military-led inquiry is hogwash and fails to give any confidence that there will be justice. So far, it has been unable to answer even the most basic questions about Abdulloh’s treatment at the interrogation centre, and what were the methods soldiers used to interrogate him before he fell into a coma,” Sunai told Al Jazeera. At his funeral on Sunday, relatives and friends carefully carried Abdulloh’s body from his home to the local mosque in the Sai Buri district of Pattani province. Images posted online showed a crowd of people bidding their final farewells to the man, who was taken by the military from his residence on July 20. Sunai of HRW told Al Jazeera that suspected separatist rebels from the pro-independent group Barisan Revolusi Nasional, also attended Abdulloh’s burial, likely establishing
his links to the armed fighters. Those who knew him told HRW that before his detention, 34-year-old Abdulloh had been the caretaker for his 60-year-old mute mother, as well as his wife and their two children. According to reports, Abdulloh was taken by authorities after a suspected armed fighter claimed he was involved in separatist actions. At the time of his detention, he was not facing any charges. Abdulloh was then interrogated at the 43rd Taharn Pran Task Force centre, located within the notorious Ingkayutthaboriharn military base. The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) reported that the investigation lasted until late that night. At about 3am the next day, soldiers reportedly found him lying unconscious on the ground. He was then rushed to Pattani General Hospital, then transferred to Songklanagarind Hospital in neighbouring Songkhla province the next day. According to medical reports from Pattani General Hospital, Abdulloh was in a coma due to severe brain swelling as a possible result of lack of oxygen to the brain. He died on August 25. FAITH Narrated/Authority of Salama bin Al-Akwa: Once the Prophet ordered a person on Ashura (the tenth of Muharram) to announce, “Whoever has eaten, should not eat any more, but fast, and who has not eaten should not eat, but complete his fast (till the end of the day). TELL YOUR KIDS THE STORY OF HIJRAH
By Selma Cook hen Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) first started to tell people about the message of Islam, he was talking to people who knew him and his good and honest character. We might think that knowing the piety of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would urge them to believe in the message and follow him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) but the people were living in an environment of many evils. They were engulfed in idol worship, racism, tribal and family pride and many types of injustice. It took great faith and courage for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to trust in Allah and proclaim the message, knowing very well the negative response that would likely follow. But this was not the only act of faith that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) exemplified; in fact, making Hijrah to Madina took enormous reliance on Allah and fortitude to face fierce enemies while laying the foundation of a solid Muslim community. The disbelievers of Makkah were angry when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proclaimed that they should not worship idols. These idols were made of stone and all sorts of materials (some were even made of dates). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told them that they should only worship the One true Lord of all Creation who had sent many prophets and messengers throughout time to guide humankind. Devotion to the stone gods was one reason why many insisted on disbelieving in the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but another important aspect was based on pride, as the Quraysh (the main leading tribe in Makkah at that time) had been, for generations, responsible for providing for the pilgrims who came to Makkah every year at the time of Hajj. At that time the Kabah was filled with idols and Quraysh thought that if they believed in the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and followed him, they would lose respect among the other tribes and this important role that had been given to them by their forefathers would be removed from them. Moreover, with the pilgrims every year, also came much economic wealth. In following the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) the people of Quraysh felt they had a lot to lose in worldly terms. Little did they know how much they would lose in the Hereafter if they insisted on their disbelief! The Beginning of Hijrah While the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was patiently, gently and persistently proclaiming the message of Islam, his followers suffered under the harshness and severity of Quraysh who did their very best to persecute and torture the believers, hoping they could force them to give up their faith and return to the worship of idols and immorality. But the faith and firmness of the believers were exemplary and they were prepared to face death if they had to in order to remain faithful to Allah Almighty. After all efforts had been made to change the hearts of the obstinate Quraysh, the time had come for the Muslims to settle elsewhere and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose Madinah. Slowly and secretly the Muslims started to travel to Madinah, trying to keep their movement away from the keen eyes of Quraysh. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was waiting for Allah Almighty to order him to leave and travel to Madinah. It was a sensitive time because Quraysh had
reached the peak of anger and frustration at the growing number of Muslims and the fact that Islam was still continuing to spread despite their many efforts to thwart it. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) remained behind in Makkah, waiting for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to receive the order from Allah Almighty to leave. He prepared two camels and provisions for the journey and waited patiently. Unaware of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) plans, the Quraysh had devised a plot to kill the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) but Allah Almighty is the Best of Planners and He did not allow the disbelievers to succeed in their evil scheme. A group of young men, each one representing a tribe of Makkah, stood outside the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) home, intending to strike him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) one by one when he emerged and kill him. The Quraysh were proud of their wicked plan, thinking it would rid them of Islam once and for all without them having to answer to the tribe of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who could not retaliate against every tribe! Allah the All-Knowing Knew of their plot and guided the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to safety. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to sleep in his blessed bed that night and then under the protection of Allah Almighty, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left his house and walked past the waiting men. They did not see him! And when Ali emerged from the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) house the next morning they were astonished! They had no idea how that could have happened. Because they were without true faith, they could not comprehend how it is so easy for Allah Almighty to make such a miracle happen. Abu Bakr, the Faithful Friend When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left his house, he went to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him it was time for them to leave. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was ready! The greatest manhunt was underway! The Quraysh offered a great reward to anyone who would bring the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) back, dead or alive. How evil they were, and how great is the mercy, guidance and protection of Allah Almighty. Quraysh expected the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would head to Madinah, but he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) headed off in the opposite direction at first to mislead their enemies. They camped out in a cave for some time and during this time a great lesson along with an ayat of Quran was revealed. When first entering the cave Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was so concerned about the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) safety and wellbeing that he insisted on entering first to rid it of any dangerous creatures, like scorpions. When he was satisfied that it was safe
he and the P r o p h e t (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered it and stayed quietly there. Asma, a daughter of Abu Bakr, used to bring them food and news from Makkah. She showed great courage in doing this and she used to hide the food in her clothing and creep out of the city going into the desert. At one time, one of the disbelievers thought she knew where the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was and struck her harshly, trying to get her to talk, but she said nothing! At one point, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)were in the cave a group of men, eager to get the reward money, stepped very close to the entrance of the cave. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) could see their feet and was very afraid the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would be found. He did not care for his own safety; all his thoughts and concern were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the great responsibility he felt in accompanying him on this very important journey. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) whispered his fears to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who comforted him saying (what means): “What do you think of two, whose third is Allah?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was telling his great friend Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that they should not fear as Allah was with them. And Indeed, Allah Almighty protected them because He caused a bird to build a nest and lay eggs at the entrance of the cave and a spider to spin its web across the cave entrance. In this way, the enemies of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were convinced that he could not possible be in the cave. When the time was right, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) left the cave and continued on their journey to Madinah. If was a long and difficult journey and the Muslims were in Madinah, eagerly awaiting their arrival. Every day
men would go to the outskirts of the town, climb tall trees and try to see if the blessed Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was approaching. Many days passed and still there was no sign of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). There was no way for them to know that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was safe; they just had to trust in Allah and wait. They had left their homes, undergone much difficulty and faced many dangers. Without the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to lead them, what would they do? It was a test of their faith and patience. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Arrives to Madinah At last, the happy day arrived! The men, who were watching the desert every day, looking for signs of the travelers, saw dust rising in the distance! As the figures drew closer, it became clear there were two of them! And then when they drew even closer it was clear that finally the blessed Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had arrived! News spread quickly throughout the town. People in their shops, in the market, and in their homes heard the news that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had arrived. Everyone rushed to welcome the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! They sang songs of joy, prayed and followed him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as he entered the city. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) humbly allowed his camel to be guided by Allah Almighty to the place where he would stay. Everyone wanted the blessing of having the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stay with them, so letting the camel stop where it chose showed the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) great mercy and wisdom. There were many more trials to come but the Muslims, now in Madinah, had the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with them. He was teaching them, advising them, and guiding them. Living in his midst was a great blessing and they knew it. They attended to their duties, gathered with him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and grew in faith. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had left the city he loved so well, seeking the pleasure of Allah. And now, in Madinah, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) continued to seek His pleasure and proclaim the message of Islam. www. http://islam.ru/en

Canada pushing for Amazon protections in free-trade talks with Brazil
Canada is forging ahead with trade talks with the South American Mercosur trading bloc, hoping to push Brazil to better protect the critical Amazon rainforest, a government spokesman said Tuesday. The talks are continuing despite Brazil’s initial rejection of international funding to help fight fires in the Amazon, apparently over a personal spat with France’s President Emmanuel Macron. Canada began trade negotiations last year with the four full members of the Mercosur group -- Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. There have been six rounds of talks, most recently in June. Environment groups last week asked the federal government to abandon those talks in a bid to force Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to end the rapid deforestation experts say is partly to blame for the record number of fires burning in the Amazon this year. Tuesday, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh echoed them, saying in a statement that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “is putting the interests of rich corporations ahead of the fight against climate change by continuing freetrade negotiations with President Bolsonaro.” A spokesman for International Trade Minister Jim Carr said the talks will continue “because we are committed to diversifying our trading partners” but that trade is not the only thing on the agenda. “As part of negotiations, Canada is seeking environmental provisions that would be more ambitious than the current (World Trade Organization) guidelines, and include sustainable forest management and combating illegal logging and related trade,” said Michael Jones. During recent talks for the new North
American free-trade agreement, Canada successfully lobbied to get a specific chapter on environmental protections included. However Canada was not able to persuade the United States to include a mention of climate change. Environment Minister Catherine McKenna said Tuesday any agreement with Brazil would have to have strong environmental protections, including commitments to reforestation. Bolsonaro’s policies to use the resources of the Amazon in agriculture and mining have been blamed by activists for the fires, some of which might have started by farmers burning fields to prepare them for planting. Bolsonaro disagrees entirely, even accusing critics of lighting the fires themselves. Earlier this month, Bolsonaro fired the head of the Brazilian space agency after it released regular data on the forest that showed significantly faster deforestation since Bolsonaro took office on Jan. 1. The policies of the Bolsonaro government, combined with the fires, led France’s Macron last week to threaten to block ratification of a trade deal Europe reached with the Mercosur bloc in June. Ireland’s prime minister Leo Varadkar made a similar threat. Canada is not following their lead. Trudeau did work with Macron to get the Amazon fires onto the agenda of the annual G7 leaders’ summit in France over the weekend. The G7 countries announced a joint US$20-million commitment to help fight the fires, money Bolsonaro at first rejected, but later reportedly said he might accept if Brazil controls how the money is spent. did not sit well with Singh. www.The Canadian Press
Liberals Undecided If Trudeau Will Be In 1st Leaders’ Debate
Tories have accused the Liberal leader of “hiding” from two debates. OTTAWA — The Liberals have not confirmed if Justin Trudeau will attend or be a no-show to the first federal leaders’ debate next month. That debate, sponsored by Maclean’s magazine and Citytv and hosted by journalist Paul Wells, will take place Sept. 12 in Toronto. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh, and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May have all confirmed their participation. “The Liberal party has committed to participating in the commission’s debates,” spokesperson Braeden Caley said Wednesday, referring to two official election debates to be hosted by a partnership of media outlets, including HuffPost Canada, in October. Asked if Trudeau would attend the Maclean’s and Citytv debate or the planned Munk debate on foreign policy on Oct. 1, Caley said the party is still mulling its options.“Other organizations have also started to express interest in holding de-
bates or forums, but we have not yet made any new commitments or decisions.” Scheer and May have also confirmed their participation in the Munk debate, while Trudeau and Singh have yet to announce their plans.“We’re still trying to make the Munk debate work, we haven’t confirmed our attendance yet,” said NDP spokesperson Melanie Richer. Tories launch new attack Uncertainty over Trudeau’s attendance in the Maclean’s/Citytv and Munk debates has inspired a fresh Conservative attack against the Liberal leader. Conservatives released a press release Tuesday suggesting Trudeau is “hiding” and “running away” from debates ahead of the next election. “Just because Trudeau has a lot to run away and hide from doesn’t mean he should,” it read. Meanwhile, Liberals are also accusing Scheer of avoiding questions about his stances on same-sex marriage and abortion. By Zi-Ann Lum www.huffingtonpost.ca/
The family of a teenager with special needs is speaking out after she was berated by a stranger at a nail salon. The incident happened Friday at Icon Nails and Spa in Surrey’s Guildford neighbourhood. Margaret Young and her two daughters, Courtney and Dani Lynes, were getting pedicures when another customer started yelling at Courtney to stop staring. When Young explained that Courtney, 18, has special needs, the other woman started yelling more loudly. “She said: Shame on you for bringing an idiot into the world and we’re all going to hell because I did bring such a retard into this world and that we all should’ve died,” Young said. Salon patrons said the dispute began to escalate when the woman appeared to want to fight Young. “[She] began to threaten to punch and hit, pushing chairs out of the way, pushing people out of the way, coming at the mother and the mother was naturally, understandably reactive as well,” said Caroline Sebraoui, who witnessed the encounter. Security footage obtained by CTV News Vancouver shows salon patrons and staff
members trying to intervene by standing between Young and the woman, and holding them apart. Eventually, staff members were able to kick the woman out of the salon and lock the door. But Dani Lynes said that didn’t stop the woman from tormenting them. “The whole time she was outside, she was banging on the window, making faces at us and fingering us,” she said. Salon patrons said they were appalled to see the woman discriminate against the teen.“This was pure ignorance,” Sabraoui said. “It was shocking and when the mom tried to defend her daughter and everybody was trying to help, this person didn’t stop and flipping fingers and swearing and using such foul language.” Courtney became inconsolable and started to cry during the entire ordeal, the family said.“She had her hands up and she’s sobbing and she said, ‘Why I die? Why I die?’” Dani Lynes said. “I’m holding her hand and I tell her, ‘Courtney, that woman is mean. She doesn’t understand.’” Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

Sinking B.C. highway will cost you millions
Taxpayers will fork out at least $3 million to fix the South Fraser Perimeter Road. A portion of the highway that connects Surrey and Delta with the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal was built over an old garbage dump and is now slowly sinking into the ground. The BC NDP government figures it will keep sinking until at least 2024. It already spends $600,000 a year to raise and repave the highway and it’s accusing the BC Liberals of not building it properly in the first place. “We call that stretch of the highway the BC Liberal garbage bumps,” said Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon. In turn, the BC Liberals said they have a long history of building quality roads, and accused the provincial government of “making a mountain out of a molehill. “No one complains that it’s been built,” said Richmond MLA Jas Johal. “So at the end of the day, let’s look at it, let’s find an engineering solution – let’s deal with it.” Signs dot the highway near the Alex Fraser bridge warning drivers the bumps are ahead, and the road is scarred with marks where vehicle didn’t slow down and bottomed-out. “My son enjoys going fast over that, but I
don’t think anybody else does,” said Kahlon The expressway has been controversial since the start. It bypasses the Burns Bog and critics raised environmental and First Nations concerns. A geotechnical report for the past government dated September 2006, raised issues with the soil in parts of the route. The report reads, “There are associated considerations such as post-construction settlement that affect the long-term performance of the roadway.”Once the road finally settles, the government said it will look for a permanent solution for the 200-metre-long section. And only then will taxpayers know the full cost for repairs. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca
7 P ak . I N D E P E N D E N C E 8th Pakistan Festival draws the biggest crowd in its history Dhul Hijjah 29 Aug 30, 2019
On August 18, thousands of people came together to celebrate 73rd Pakistan’s independence at British Columbia’s 8th Pakistan Festival in Tsawwassen Mills. With Pakistani and Canadian flags fluttering in the air, there was a huge turnout of Pakistani Canadians, estimated at 8,000 people in total. The new location immensely added to the exquisiteness of the event in that particular area. The event provided a window into Pakistan’s arts and crafts, cuisine, fashion and music. Like the first Pakistani Festival, the tradition was continued this year by individuals representing Pakistan-Canada Association, Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association, Pakistani Youth Council and Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society along with Pakistani businesses and the Pakistani community at large, all with the great contribution and supervision of Consulate General of Pakistan in Vancouver. Ilearn DL Secondary School was the title sponsor for the event and other business and media sponsors also played their role well in success of the festival. Once again, the goal was to strengthen the community and to share their unique culture and heritage with their fellow Canadians. Members of local business community, both Pakistani and nonPakistani, extended their helping hands
by giving money and time to the festival. The presence of vendors from other communities was also a good sign, showing the increased popularity of the event across communities. Planning for this event began many months prior to the event. Allhumdullillah the motivation and enthusiasm of all hardworking volunteers and management committee paid off. The parking lot of the mall was filled with many tents along with a massive stage and sound system set up for the variety of entertainment. Food vendors from the community brought the event to life with the aroma and flavour of traditional Pakistani cuisine. The reception was given in afternoon inside the mall which was attended by many dignitaries. The official celebration started with a colourful Parade and a procession of special guests and dignitaries led by young kids dressed in cultural dresses holding Pakistani flags and women carrying a big Pakistani Flag throughout the Tsawwassen Mills Shopping Mall and to the stage. The festival was conducted beautifully by Ms. Saima Naz, Ms. Bushra Ahsan and Mr. Haroon Khan. The program started with Talawat e Quran, and then a welcome address given by the organizing committee, including Dr. Mohammad Tariq. Many speeches were delivered by honourable
dignitaries, including Senator Salma Ataullahjan who had come from Ontario. Next segment was a collection of beautiful and colourful presentations by children on national songs. On the musical entertainment side, Mr. Sunny Khan performed classical music. After that, guest artist from Lahore Mr. Tariq Tafu performed some of his favourite hits which was enjoyed by all. The highlight performance of the event was Abrar ul Haq, king of “Bhangra” and a legendary Pakistani artist and philanthropist. He riled up the crowd with Pakistani pop and folk songs. A Special thanks goes to the City of Tsawwassen, sponsors and dedicated team of volunteers whose cooperation made this event a huge success. This festival has been a major step for the Pakistani community under the leadership of entire Pakistani Consulate General Team, who continues to make bridges between local Pakistani Associations and many other individuals and the community hopes for it to continue for many years to come. The Miracle Media congratulates all 2019 Pakistan Festival committee members and highly appreciates their day and night efforts of many weeks to host at such a beautiful venue in Tsawwassen.

8 l oca l A Grand Rally in support of Kashmir at Surrey Downtown Dhul Hijjah 29 Aug 30, 2019
On Aug 25, 2019 a collaboration of many Kashmiri, Pakistani, Indian and Peace groups joined hands at a rally to speak up about the human rights violations in Kashmir. There were over 500 attendees that met at Holland Park and then marched down King George, up 102 Ave and back to Holland Park via University Drive. Slogans in support of freedom for the Kashmir were loudly chanted throughout the walk. A police escort assisted with controlling the traffic. The main points to raise awareness about are: 1.Under the false pretext of national security, the Indian government deployed 40,000 armed soldiers to join the 700,000 military personnel permanently stationed in Jammu and Kashmir, which is internationally recognized as a disputed region. 2.Prominent Kashmiri political leaders, civil rights activists and civilians are among more than 4000 arbitrarily arrested since August 5th 2019. Kashmir is under an indefinite curfew that restricts freedom of movement, access to basic necessities, and livelihood. In addition, internet access and phone services have been severely restricted, creating a communications blackout. 3.On August 5, the Indian government unilaterally scrapped two related special provisions in the Indian constitution, Article 370 and Article 35A. Article 370 granted Kashmir autonomy over most of its administrative affairs. Article 35A ensured that only “permanent residents” of the state of Jammu and Kashmir had the right to buy and own property there. This action by the government of India has stripped the Indigenous people of Kashmir of their rights, jeopardized Kashmir’s right
to self-determination and escalated the likelihood of violence inflicted by the Indian military’s mobilization. It has also endangered Kashmir’s demography and its fragile ecology. 4.The Indian military is seen as an occupying force by Kashmiris and its soldiers are protected by laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act that allow them to perpetrate human rights abuses without consequence. These human rights violations have been well documented by local Kashmiri organizations and international human rights watchdogs like the UN Human Rights Office. 5.Our request of the Canadian government is: a.Insist the Indian Government De-escalate the situation by immediately withdrawing all Indian military personnel from Kashmir; b.Take leadership on the world stage by supporting a referendum under international and UN supervision that guarantees a free and impartial vote as enshrined in successive UN Resolutions ensuring the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination and; c.Insist on the restoration of the rights of the Kashmiri people by ending the communications blackout, military-enforced curfew, blockades, and human rights violations. d.Work with the governments of Pakistan and India to mediate a peaceful and amicable resolution to the issue of Kashmir sovereignty. There is much more that needs to be done. If you are interested in being part of this effort you can contact Furquan Gehlen at furquan@worldbeyondwar.org or call/text at 604-603-8741.

Choose Forward: Liberals launch new national advertising and digital engagement campaign
innovative new advertising and digital engagement campaign focused on the choice facing Canadians in October’s important election. A series of new national ads featuring Justin Trudeau will begin airing on television this week, as part of a comprehensive and digitally-integrated advertising experience that also includes a large-scale online campaign, a new website, and featured stories from Canadians who have a personal connection to Canada’s progress Papineau, QC - With eight weeks until Ca- since 2015. It also includes the launch of the nadians head to the polls, Justin Trudeau and Liberal Party of Canada’s official 2019 camthe Liberal Party of Canada are launching an paign theme: Choose Forward.
“The Conservatives like to say they’re for the people, but then they cut taxes for the wealthy and cut services for everybody else,” says Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “In October, we’ve got a choice to make: Keep moving forward and build on the progress we’ve made, or go back to the politics of the Harper years. I’m for moving forward — for everyone.” Justin Trudeau highlights how Conservative politicians have consistently opposed the Liberal government’s progress to help people, including: •Raising taxes on the wealthiest one percent,
so we could lower taxes for the middle class •Creating the Canada Child Benefit, which gives hundreds of dollars each month taxfree to families across Canada •A real plan to fight climate change that will reduce pollution and put more money in Canadians’ pockets Canadians will have an important choice to make in this fall’s election. While Conservatives are focused on going backward with cuts to vital services that families rely on, Liberals are focused on moving forward with our positive plan to invest in the middle class. Ottawa, ON – Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer has confirmed his attendance at four proposed leaders debates during the upcoming election campaign. Scheer is confirmed to attend both the commission English (Oct. 7) and French (Oct. 10) debates. Scheer is also confirmed to attend a debate organized by Maclean’s Magazine and City TV on Sept. 12 and the Munk Debate on foreign policy on Oct. 1. Why won’t Justin Trudeau attend the Maclean’s/CityTV debate and the Munk debate? Why is he hiding?
Just because Trudeau has a lot to run away and hide from doesn’t mean he should. He has made life harder and more unaffordable for families – bringing in a carbon tax and raising taxes on 80% of middle class families. He is the first Prime Minister in Canadian history to be found guilty of breaking ethics laws – not once, but twice. He has been incredibly weak on the world stage – backing down to Donald Trump on NAFTA, humiliating Canada and severely damaging relations with India, and failing to stand up for Canada’s interests in China.
And, he has broken promise after promise to the Canadian people. Plain and simple, he is not as advertised. Trudeau should stand before Canadians and answer for these failures. Instead, he’s running away.Andrew Scheer is planning to hold Justin Trudeau accountable on the debate-stage while highlighting his own plan to help Canadians get ahead. It’s time for Justin Trudeau to stop hiding. By Cory Hann Director of Communications Conservative Party of Canada
If the fall election results in a minority government and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh holds the balance of power, he says he would not support the Conservative Party’s
agenda. Singh’s comments came in response to a video of Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer from 2005. In the video, Scheer is seen delivering a speech in the House of Commons detailing the reasons for his opposition to same-sex marriage. Liberals had been circulating the video on social media all day Thursday. Scheer says his position has changed since the 2005 vote that legalized same-sex marriage, and he now “unequivocally supports equal LGBTQ rights, including same-sex marriage as defined in law.”Still, Singh said the video was a “resurfacing of Andrew Scheer’s disgusting prejudice against LGBTQI2S+ people.” “This is exactly why, if Canadians deliver a minority government in October, I will not prop up Andrew Scheer and the Conserva-
tives. We can’t trust Mr. Scheer or his caucus to champion the fundamental rights of Canadians,” Singh said in an emailed statement. The Liberals and the Conservatives have been neck and neck in recent polls, which creates the possibility that Singh could end up holding the cards in a minority parliament. That means when the Conservatives vote one way and the Liberals vote another on a given issue – but neither has enough votes to win – the NDP votes could make or break either party’s goals. The Green Party has also been nipping at the NDP’s heels in polls, meaning they could muscle in and be deciders in a minority situation. Singh has now unequivocally shared that, should his party be the one holding the balance of power, he would not support the
Conservatives. Scheer has defended himself against the criticism for his video. His press secretary Daniel Schow called the resurfacing of the video a “desperation tactic from Justin Trudeau.”“When this vote took place a decade and a half ago, Mr. Scheer voted the way several Liberals did, including some who currently sit in the Liberal caucus and are running for re-election. Mr. Scheer supports same-sex marriage as defined in law and as Prime Minister will of course uphold it,” Schow said in an email sent to CTV News. The Conservatives also pointed out that multiple high-profile Liberals voted against same-sex marriage as well, including current cabinet minister Lawrence MacAulay. Source: ctvnews.ca/
Many British Columbians are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Uber and other ridehailing services in the province – but Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum isn’t one of them. On Tuesday, McCallum penned an open letter to B.C. Premier John Horgan slamming the ride-hailing regulations unveiled last week by the Passenger Transportation Board. The mayor highlighted two issues in particular: the lack of any limits on fleet sizes, and the massive pick-up boundaries that companies like Lyft and Uber will enjoy. The latter will create a “distinctly unlevel playing field” between ride-hailing services and taxis, McCallum said. “To create a fair
market environment, both ride-hailing companies and the taxi industry should be subject to the same regulations and restrictions. Anything less is unacceptable,” he wrote in the letter. On fleet sizes, McCallum suggested an unrestricted influx of ride-hailing vehicles would worsen the region’s traffic problems and cause a “further erosion of air quality.” “A better solution may be to initially limit the number of ride-hailing vehicles with a view to increasing that number as demand dictates. This would result in less congestion, less impact on air quality and would allow for the taxi industry to initially retain more
market share,” the mayor said. McCallum doesn’t threaten to take any action if his concerns aren’t addressed, and it’s not clear what power Surrey could have to thwart ride-hailing anyway, as it is regulated provincially. He was not available to answer questions about his remarks on Tuesday. The mayor isn’t the only one to speak out against the new rules. The taxi industry has echoed his concerns, also noting that ridehailing companies will pay less for insurance, while Lyft has questioned whether it will be able to build a sizable fleet given that drivers will all be required to hold Class 4 licences.: Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

calls from members of the public and that’s very unfortunate.” Otto said he was “overwhelmed” and “appalled” to see Frank Smeenk, the head of the third-party group, tell The Canadian Press he disavowed the ad and that he mistakenly did not get the chance to sign off on the controversial campaign. Otto said his company received the finished ad directly from True North Strong & Free Advertising Corp. “This was not a large campaign,” Otto said. “For him to say that he had no idea of the message, I find quite surprising.” Smeenk, chief executive of a Toronto-based mining company, has not responded to follow-up questions. Elections Canada requires all third-party partisan advertising to include a clearly visible tagline identifying the group behind it and indicating that the group has authorized the ad. Photos of the billboards show this tagline was included. According to financial returns the group

Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies organized its annual summer camp to the Okanagan Valley
Alhamdulillah with the help of Allah, Shaykh Oves and Shaykh Anees of Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies organized its annual summer camp to the Okanagan Valley. We had 22 students join us this year. We drove 5 hours towards the BC interior and on the way we made stops along the highways next to beautiful rivers where students enjoyed getting their feet wet and enjoyed the magnificent scenery! Once we reached our campsite that was nestled between a hill and a river, the students were taught to set up their campsites, setup tents and then we had burgers and hot dogs for lunch. Afterwards, the students would go for a cool swim in the lake. We ended the days with BBQ chicken for dinner and s’mores before praying Isha and sleeping! In the mornings after praying Fajr everyone had breakfast enjoying eggs made to order, tea, hot chocolate, waf-
fles, soup, and Nutella sandwiches. Afterwards the students went hiking, rock climbing, go-karting, playing mini-golf, climbing high ropes and other fun activities. We also went boating on a large party boat and had a delicious lunch of burgers and hotdogs on the boat followed by swimming in the lake and finally some fishing! After lunch we would have amazing games of baseball, football, cricket, go swimming in the lake and water balloon fights! By evening, the students ended their day with dinner, s’mores, ice cream and praying Isha. On the final morning after praying Fajr and having breakfast, the students packed up, cleaned their campsites and prepared for their journey home. Alhamdulillah, the students had an amazing time! During the days of camping the students prayed all 5 daily Salah, listened to short speeches and
remembered Allah. During the entire trip, the students remained occupied and busy enjoying the outdoors. Shaykh Oves, Shaykh Anees and the staff of Darul Qur’an Institute believe that we are fortunate to live in Canada that is full of natural beauty and we should enjoy it by exploring the great outdoors while remembering and thanking Allah. As Allah mentions in the Holy Qur’an: Say: “Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation; so will Allah produce a later creation: for Allah has power over all things. (Surah Al-Ankabut, 20) We do this to remind ourselves that learning is not just about studying books, but also includes new experiences, sharing and learning new ideas, strengthening bonds between students and teachers in a fun and relaxing environment, and to create happy memo-
ries that will last a lifetime. May Allah reward the community for their Duaas and support and the following volunteers for joining us and their assistance: Br Tahir Sattar, Br Tariq Qureshi,Br Asad Stanzai May Allah accept our humble efforts, Aameen.

India’s Modi awarded UAE medal amid Kashmir crackdown
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the United Arab Emirates’ highest civilian honor during a visit Saturday to the oil-rich Gulf nation, reinforcing ties between the countries even as he pursues stripping statehood from the disputed Muslim-majority region of Kashmir. The induction of Modi into the Order of Zayed shows the importance the UAE places on India, the world’s third-largest consumer of crude oil. India is home to a rapidly growing consumer market and labor pool that the federation of sheikhdoms relies on for its own economy.
Activists, however, decried the UAE bestowing the award on Modi as he pursues a clampdown on the Himalayan region claimed by both Pakistan and India. Modi later traveled to Bahrain to become the first Indian premier to visit the island nation. “With several Gulf states in an ever-tightening embrace with Modi, human rights have been discarded in favor of economic opportunities,” wrote Samah Hadid, a Beirutbased human rights advocate. Abu Dhabi’s powerful crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, personally put the golden medal around Modi’s
neck during an event that was closed to press in Abu Dhabi, the Emirati capital. With a portrait of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s first president for whom the order is named, behind them, the two men shook and held hands for a moment and spoke quietly. “You deserve it,” Sheikh Mohammed told Modi at one point while posing for photos. Putin, Erdogan hail close defence ties as Idlib divisions remain
Turkish president condemns Syrian army offensive as Russian leader urges ‘terrorist attacks’ in rebel-held Idlib to end. S:aljazeera.com/ The leaders of Russia and Turkey have held discussions about a possible expansion of defence industry cooperation, even as differences appeared to remain over the situation in northwestern Syria, where a Moscow-backed government offensive has been going on since late April. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, met in Moscow on Tuesday, just days after Ankara said one of its observation posts in Syria was surrounded and a military convoy was attacked by Syrian government forces in two separate incidents. Speaking to reporters alongside Putin, Erdogan said the offensive has disrupted the calm that set in after Turkey and
Russia - which back opposing sides in Syria’s war - agreed last year to turn rebel-held Idlib province into a de-escalation zone. Erdogan said it was unacceptable that Syrian forces were “raining death on civilians from the air and land under the pretence of battling terrorism”. “We do not want this to continue. All necessary steps will be taken here as needed,” he added. “The situation [in Idlib] has become so complicated that at this moment our troops are in danger.” For his part, Putin said the two leaders had agreed on “additional joint steps” to “normalise” the situation in Idlib, but did not provide any details.“The situation in the Idlib deescalation zone is of serious concern to us and our Turkish partners,” Putin told the news conference, referring to the September 2018 deal between the two countries that prevented a major Syrian offensive on the

ashmir, region of the northwestern Indian subcontinent. It is bounded by the Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang to the northeast and the Tibet Autonomous Region to the east (both parts of China), by the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the south, by Pakistan to the west, and by Afghanistan to the northwest. The region, with a total area of some 85,800 square miles (222,200 square km), has been the subject of dispute between India and Pakistan since the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. The northern and western portions are administered by Pakistan and comprise three areas: Azad Kashmir, Gilgit, and Baltistan, the last two being part of a territory called the Northern Areas. Administered by India are the southern and southeastern portions, which constitute the state of Jammu and Kashmir but are slated to be split into two union territories. The Indian- and Pakistaniadministered portions are divided by a “line
of control” agreed to in 1972, although neither country recognizes it as an international boundary. In addition, China became active in the eastern area of Kashmir in the 1950s and has controlled the northeastern part of Ladakh (the easternmost portion of the region) since 1962. Land And People The Kashmir region is predominantly mountainous, with deep, narrow valleys and high, barren plateaus. The relatively low-lying Jammu and Punch (Poonch) plains in the southwest are separated by the thickly forested Himalayan foothills and the Pir Panjal Range of the Lesser Himalayas from the larger, more fertile, and more heavily populated Vale of Kashmir to the north. The vale, situated at an elevation of about 5,300 feet (1,600 metres), constitutes the basin of the upper Jhelum River and contains the city of Srinagar. Jammu and the vale lie in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, while the Punch lowlands are largely in Azad Kashmir. Rising northeast of the vale is the western part of the Great Himalayas, the peaks of which reach elevations of 20,000 feet (6,100 metres) or higher. Farther to the northeast is the high, mountainous plateau region of Ladakh, which is cut by
the rugged valley of the northwestward-flowing Indus River. Extending roughly northwestward from the Himalayas are the lofty peaks of the Karakoram Range, including K2 (Mount Godwin Austen), which at 28,251 feet (8,611 metres) is the second highest peak in the world, after Mount Everest. The people in the Jammu area are Muslim in the west and Hindu in the east and speak Hindi, Punjabi, and Dogri. The inhabitants of the Vale of Kashmir and the Pakistani areas are mostly Muslim and speak Urdu and Kashmiri. The sparsely inhabited Ladakh region and beyond is home to Tibetan peoples who practice Buddhism and speak Balti and Ladakhi.
History
The region to 1947 According to legend, an ascetic named Kashyapa reclaimed the land now comprising Kashmir from a vast lake. That land came to be known as Kashyapamar and, later, Kashmir. Buddhism was introduced by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, and from the 9th to the 12th century CE the region appears to have achieved considerable prominence as a centre of Hindu culture. A succession of Hindu dynasties ruled Kashmir until 1346, when it came under Muslim rule. The Muslim period lasted nearly five centuries, ending when Kashmir was annexed to the Sikh kingdom of the Punjab in 1819 and then to the Dogra kingdom of Jammu in 1846. Thus, the Kashmir region in its contemporary form dates from 1846, when, by the treaties of Lahore and Amritsar at the conclusion of the First Sikh War, Raja Gulab Singh, the Dogra ruler of Jammu, was created maharaja (ruling prince) of an extensive but somewhat illdefined Himalayan kingdom “to the eastward of the River Indus and westward of the River Ravi.” The creation of this princely state helped the British safeguard their northern flank in their advance to the Indus and beyond during the latter part of the 19th century. The state thus formed part of a complex political buffer zone interposed by the British between their Indian empire and the empires of Russia and China to the north. For Gulab Singh, confirmation of title to these mountain territories marked the culmination of almost a quarter century of campaigning and diplomatic negotiation among the petty hill kingdoms along
the northern borderlands of the Sikh empire of the Punjab. Some attempts were made in the 19th century to define the boundaries of the territory, but precise definition was in many cases defeated by the nature of the country and by the existence of huge tracts lacking permanent human settlement. In the far north, for example, the maharaja’s authority certainly extended to the Karakoram Range, but beyond that lay a debatable zone on the borders of the Turkistan of and Xinjiang regions of Central Asia, and the boundary was never demarcated. There were similar doubts about the alignment of the frontier where this northern zone skirted the region known as Aksai Chin, to the east, and joined the better-known and more precisely delineated boundary with Tibet, which had served for centuries as the eastern border of the Ladakh region. The pattern of boundaries in the northwest became clearer in the last decade of the 19th century, when Britain, in negotiations with Afghanistan and Russia, delimited boundaries in the Pamirs region. At that time Gilgit, always understood to be part Kashmir, was for strategic reasons constituted as a special agency in 1889 under a British agent.
The Kashmir problem
As long as the territory’s existence was guaranteed by the United Kingdom, the weaknesses in its structure and along its peripheries were not of great consequence, but they became apparent after the British withdrawal from South Asia in 1947. By the terms agreed to by India and Pakistan for the partition of the Indian subcontinent, the rulers of princely states were given the right to opt for either Pakistan or India or—with certain reservations—to remain independent. Hari Singh, the maharaja of Kashmir, initially believed that by delaying his decision he could maintain the independence of Kashmir, but, caught up in a train of events that included a revolution among his Muslim subjects along the western borders of the state and the intervention of Pashtun tribesmen, he signed an Instrument of Accession to the Indian union in October 1947. This was the signal for intervention both by Pakistan, which considered the state to be a natural extension of Pakistan, and by India, which intended to confirm the act of accession. Localized warfare continued during 1948
and ended, through the intercession of the United Nations, in a cease-fire that took effect in January 1949. In July of that year, India and Pakistan defined a cease-fire line—the line of control—that divided the administration of the territory. Regarded at the time as a temporary expedient, the partition along that line still exists.
Attempts at resolution and legitimization
Although there was a clear Muslim majority in Kashmir before the 1947 partition, and its economic, cultural, and geographic contiguity with the Muslim-majority area of the Punjab could be convincingly demonstrated, the political developments during and after the partition resulted in a division of the region. Pakistan was left with territory that, although basically Muslim in character, was thinly populated, relatively inaccessible, and economically underdeveloped. The largest Muslim group, situated in the Vale of Kashmir and estimated to number more than half the population of the entire region, lay in Indian-administered territory, with its former outlets via the Jhelum valley route blocked. Many proposals were subsequently made to end the dispute over Kashmir, but tensions mounted between the two countries following the Chinese incursion into Ladakh in 1962, and warfare broke out between India and Pakistan in 1965. A cease-fire was established in September, followed by an agreement signed by the two sides at Tashkent (Uzbekistan) in early January 1966, in which they resolved to try to end the dispute by peaceful means. Fighting again flared up between the two in 1971 as part of the India-Pakistan war that resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. An accord signed in the Indian city of Shimla in 1972 expressed the hope that henceforth the countries in the region would be able to live in peace with each other. It was widely believed that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, then prime minister of Pakistan, might have tacitly accepted the line of control as the de facto border, although he later denied this. After Bhutto was arrested in 1977 and executed in 1979, the Kashmir issue once again became the leading cause of conflict between India and Pakistan.Feb A number of movements have variously sought a merger of Kashmir with Pakistan, independence for the region from both India and Pakistan, or the granting of Indian union territory status to Buddhist Ladakh. To contend with these movements, confront Pakistani forces along the cease-fire line,
and support the administrative structure of Jammu and Kashmir state, the Indian union government has maintained a strong military presence there, especially since the end of the 1980s.
Insurgency and counterinsurgency
Disillusioned with lack of progress through the democratic process, militant organizations began to pop up in the region in the late 1980s. Their purpose was to resist control from the Indian union government. By the early 1990s the militancy had evolved into an insurgency, and India engaged in a crackdown campaign. The rigour of the fighting died down in the mid-1990s, though occasional violence continued to take place. The Kargil area of western Ladakh has often been the site of border conflicts, including a serious incident in 1999. In May of that year Pakistan intensified artillery shelling of the Kargil sector. Meanwhile, the Indian army discovered that militants had infiltrated the Indian zone from the Pakistan side and had established positions within and west of the Kargil area. Intense fighting ensued between the infiltrators and the Indian army and lasted more than two months. The Indian army managed to reclaim most of the area on the India side of the line of control that had been occupied by the infiltrators. Hostilities finally ended when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan gave his assurance that the infiltrators would retreat. However, shelling across the line of control continued intermittently into the early 21st century, until a cease-fire agreement was reached in 2004. Tensions in the region subsequently diminished, and India and Pakistan sought more cordial relations in general and greater regional cooperation. Limited passenger bus service began in 2005 between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad on either side of the frontier, and, after the devastating earthquake in the region later that year, India and Pakistan allowed survivors and trucks carrying relief supplies to cross at several points along the line of control. In addition, in 2008 both countries opened crossborder trade links through the Kashmir region for the first time since the 1947 partition; trucks carrying locally produced goods and manufactures began operating between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad and between Rawalkot, Pakistan, and Punch, India.
Despite these advances, tensions have continued to erupt periodically in the region. Prolonged violent protests flared up over control of a piece of land used by Hindu pilgrims visiting the Amarnath cave shrine east of Srinagar in 2008 and again in 2010 after Indian soldiers killed three Pakistani villagers who they claimed were militants trying to infiltrate across the line of control. A subsequent investigation revealed that the soldiers had
in fact lured the men to the area and murdered them in cold blood. Another cycle of unrest began after the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept elections across India in 2014. The party had won an outright majority in the national legislature and began pushing policies nationwide to promote hindutva (“Hindu-ness”). The BJP, which strongly favoured the union of Kashmir with India, had become the second largest party in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and formed a unity government with the slightly larger People’s Democratic Party (PDP), whose platform centred on the implementation of self-rule in Kashmir. As the hindutva and proIndia policies of the BJP stoked the anxieties of the region’s predominantly Muslim population, Kashmir saw an uptick in unrest. The growing tensions erupted into rioting in July 2016 after the commander of an Islamic militant group was killed in an operation by Indian security forces. India’s union government, dominated by the BJP, began asserting increased control over the state as a matter of national security and launched a crackdown on militants. In late 2018 the union government dissolved the government of Jammu and Kashmir and began direct rule of the state after the BJP left the state’s unity coalition and caused its collapse.
Kashmir experienced its greatest friction in decades in February 2019. On February 14 a suicide bomber associated with a militant separatist group killed 40 members of India’s Central Reserve Police Force, the deadliest attack on Indian security forces in three decades. With a tough election cycle approaching, India’s BJP-led government faced pressure from its supporters to take forceful action. Days later India sent fighter jets across Kashmir’s line of control for the first time in five decades and later claimed to have conducted air strikes against the militant group’s largest training camp. Pakistan denied the claim, saying that the jets had struck an empty field. The next day, Pakistan shot down two Indian jets in its airspace and captured a pilot. Yet, de-
spite the aggravation, many analysts believed that both India and Pakistan intended to avoid escalation. In the aftermath, Pakistan implemented a crackdown on militants in its country, issuing arrests, closing a large number of religious schools, and promising to update its existing laws. A few months later the BJP won a landslide victory in India’s elections, expanding its representation in the parliament’s lower chamber. As the BJP continued along its forceful push in Jammu and Kashmir, the union government in August built up its military presence in the state and within days undertook action to formalize its direct control there. Exploiting a constitutional provision that allowed the union government to integrate Jammu and Kashmir upon the approval of a no-longer-extant elected body, it suspended Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomy and applied India’s constitution fully to the territory. It also passed legislation to downgrade the state at a later date to a union territory—thereby allowing the union government full control over its governance—and to split off the Ladakh region into a separate union territory of its own.
Chinese interests
China had never accepted the British-negotiated boundary agreements in northeastern Kashmir. This remained the case following the communist takeover in China in 1949, although the new government did ask India—without success—to open negotiations regarding the border. After Chinese authority was established in Tibet and reasserted in Xinjiang, Chinese forces penetrated into the northeastern parts of Ladakh. This was done mainly because it allowed them to build a military road through the Aksai Chin plateau area (completed in 1956–57) to provide better communication between Xinjiang and western Tibet; it also gave the Chinese control of passes in the region between India and Tibet. India’s belated discovery of this road led to border clashes between the two countries that culminated in the Sino-Indian war of October 1962. China has oc-
cupied the northeastern part of Ladakh since the conflict. India refused to negotiate with China on the alignment of the Ladakhi boundary in this area, and the incident contributed significantly to a diplomatic rift between the two countries that began to heal only in the late 1980s. In the following decades, China worked to improve its relations with India, but there has been no resolution to the disputed Ladakh frontier. Muslim Food Bank and Community Services hosted their very first 4km Walk-A-Thon
On Sunday August 25, the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services hosted their very first 4km Walk-A-Thon at Hawthorne Park in Surrey. The weather was hot and the crowd was larger than expected. They raised over $8,000 from families, local businesses and fundraising teams that were competing for a prize. At 10:00 am the participants started the walk to fight hunger and poverty in our community. People driving on Whalley Blvd could see a massive line of people wearing bright yellow t-shirts chanting and having a good time. Families were competing to win the
prize for the most enthusiastic participant while fundraising teams were working tirelessly to surpass each other in dollars before the event ended. After the walk everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch sponsored by Hot Pan Pizza as they waited anxiously for the prize announcements. Team Mercy Mission representing Vancouver Madinah and National Zakat Foundation raised $2270 and won 20 large pizza gift cards to Hot Pan Pizza! A family of 3 won a large gift basket to Gurulucky Treats for being the most enthusiastic participant. The money raised from this walk will go

By: Asma Shums e have to take first step for starting whether walking or running or anything . This applies for decisions in life too. That one step we take forward or backward decides our path and thus our journey. This first step is only difficult rest takes its course. Our thoughts are our first step towards the decisions of life then
comes planning ,executing and Required planning and actions. We are born, childhood, young age, adulthood . Thousand steps Our journey of life begins ,our road of life to death has one road with many lanes , twist and turns , beautiful scenes, hurdles etc ……..but we have to walk through life. Each day we begin our new journey or we walk further or backward . The speed of our jouney is good or fast or slow, either we follow the rules or break, we go smoothly or we get fines , or we have rough journey. We go back and forth emotionally , spiritually , when we are tired life does not allow us to rest for a long time, show must go on, journey of life must go on time or else we suffer penalties. If we do not have much choice but to live , go on , why not go in joyfull and lively manner instead of going like a zombie. THE most beautiful gift from god to us is life. Most of us are given good body good organs, intelligence , some very good qualities , inner strength , many things. Its upto us to value this gift and use it wisely or make foolish , stupid mistakes. We do have opportunity to make choices, there are problems and solutions, there are temptations and sense of right and wrong, we have our constant friend….. conscience our inner voice and we have family, friends,
directly to supporting all the programs that MFBCS runs throughout the year. Currently they assist over 500 needy families throughout the year with their food hamper and Aspire programs. Everyday caseworkers are working hard to make sure families that have no support are getting it. From families that are refugees to seniors who haveno one. The highlight of this event was having people from all walks of life come together in solidarity for these families. Coming together believing in hope. In the beginning of organizing this event there were challenges and road bumps but the organizers believed other people who cross our path of life. We have a choice to live nicely or just stand on the belt and let it move. It is said that time and tide waits for no one , so we have a choice to act, plan, fight in a good way with circumstances, as clock always ticks, its operated by nature , it does not need anything to go on. We get good and bad, pleasant and unpleasant, easy or difficult situations, chances or missed luck, anything expected or not expected. Infact that’s the beauty of life. As we talked earlier a step is the beginning , an idea can change the life. WAKE UP LETS wake up , live with eyes open, not sleepwalk through journey of life. The role of parents is to first make their life better so when they have children they can make their life better. The wordly things like money and all comforts are just tools they can not be the reason or gols , they are to help and support us but not our aim in life. What we act or do in every second makes it our routine thus turns into our habbits and it becomes so strong force in our nature and style that we do not give it a second thought, it drives us in life, so to understand the importance of good qualities, thoughts, and actions is very important. THE ATTIQETTES THE attiqettes of life helps us to mould our character, gives us thoughts and abili-
they could make it happen. The cause was too important. The Muslim Food Bank and Community services thanks all those who sponsored, participated, volunteered, fundraised and donated. They look forward to seeing everyone at their next event. We are still hoping to receive more donations to meet our target. Please donate online at muslimfoodbank.com/donate/ or personally at our Surrey location at 104-12941 115 Ave or in Richmond at 220-13911 Maycrest Way or you can call us at 866-248-3868 ext 0. ties to go smoothly, peacefully in our life, ofcourse we will have challenges and hurdles but otherwise life becomes boring, they are the spices of life. If we do not know anything we can always try to get the knowledge , in this modern age everything is on your fingertips to know but we need strong fingers, that is our thoughts and determination. We are not leaving alone in a bubble we share the path of life with people related to us,people who come in contact with us, and people we are around , so we better drive carefully after taking our first step as It should be safe for us and others around us , who are sharing road of life with us.

Managing Our Plastic Addiction
BY: ASMA JARAD The invention of synthetic plastic in 1907 by Belgian-born American immigrant, Leo Hendrik Baekeland, gradually and completely changed life for people around the world. In the search for a substitute to shellac--a natural electrical insulator--Baekeland invented Bakelite. Because it provides endless possibilities with its unique ability to be molded into virtually anything, Bakelite was marketed as “the material of a thousand uses.” Over time, plastic evolved even further and replaced our reliance on natural materials such as metal, wood, stone, and animal tusks, becoming the material of infinite uses. Indeed, the development of plastic has proven invaluable to people and the environment. However, as with all good things, there is always a price to pay. Unfortunately, plastic products show up in places we don’t want them to; piling up in landfills, blocking our waterways, and polluting our oceans. We are endowed by our Creator for good, so how can we utilize plastic in the countless beneficial ways it is offered without harming our health and contaminating our environment? Plastic Everywhere In the 1960s, plastic began gaining popularity due to its exceptionally versatile characteristics. Our lives today are saturated with plastic products; from the medical field, tech devices, furniture, toys, car and plane parts, to food containers and drinking vessels; reliance on plastic is everywhere. In addition to being precisely moldable, plastic is light yet durable, provides a practical alternative to glass and ceramics, is cheap to produce, and sterile enough to be used in medical procedures and devices. It is indeed difficult to imagine a day without plastics because they make our lives easier, healthier, and safer. For example, safety helmets people use for riding a motorcycle or bike are nearly 100% plastic. Plastics also furnish our lifestyles; whether it’s the cellphone in our hands, the clean water delivered to our faucets, the television mounted on our walls, or the structural foundations of our homes, innumerable lifestyle possibilities would not be available if not for plastic. As practical human beings, we know that there is no such thing as an all-around good thing. Everything has its downfalls and when it comes to plastics, there is no exception. With increased reliance on plastic as an alternative to natural resources, we gradually learn the negative result of the proliferation of plastics in our lives. As we become increasingly aware of taking care of the environment and
reducing our waste, we also cannot ignore the collecting plastic debris, piece by piece occupying vast miles of ocean space, clogging our waterways, and piling up in landfills. The troubling effect of plastic waste certainly cannot be disregarded. Since the chemical structure of most plastics renders them resistant to natural processes of degradation, plastic pollution has become a leading environmental plague. According to Rick LeBlanc, an expert in the area of sustainable packaging, “Normally, plastic items can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in landfills. But plastic bags we use in our everyday life take 10-1,000 years to decompose, while plastic bottles can take 450 years or more.” There are solutions to this epidemic which include what I learned in grade school as the 3 Rs: reuse, recycle, and reduce. According to Laura Parker, a National Geographic staff writer who specializes in covering climate change and marine environments, “A whopping 91% of plastic isn’t recycled. Billions of tons of plastic have been made over the past decades, and much of it is becoming trash and litter.” When we reuse and recycle rather than tossing away, we reduce the need to create more plastic products, thus helping to stave off what many experts fear will be a time in the not so distant future where the ocean will be filled with more plastic waste than fish. Roland Geyer from the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, specializes in industrial ecology and found that “The rapid acceleration of plastic manufacturing, which so far has doubled roughly every 15 years, has outpaced nearly every other man-made material.” Unlike other man-made materials such as steel,
nylon, and glass, the lifespan of plastic products in our lives average under a year. Tips for consuming less plastic as described by Stephanie R. Kinnon, a Vancouver-based freelance writer, include: - Make an effort to purchase products with minimal plastic packaging. - Use cloth bags for grocery shopping. - Reuse plastic containers within your home. For example, plastic grocery bags can be reused for additional trips to the grocery store or as lunch bags, gym bags, and garbage can liners. Yesterday’s yogurt container can become tomorrow’s lunch pail. Old margarine containers can become storage vessels for an assortment of household items. - Familiarize yourself with plastic recycling in your community. Plastics on Our Health In addition to the negative impact we inflict on the environment with our over-consumption, lack of recycling, and reliance on plastics, there is also a documented adverse effect on our personal health. For example, plastic containers are made with additives such as bisphenol-A (BPA), an industrial chemical that some experts claim is toxic because it binds to estrogen receptors and influences bodily processes such as cell repair, fetal development, growth, energy, reproduction, and fertility. When certain plastic containers are made, BPA is added to aid in product resiliency. BPA is meant to remain sealed within the product, however, it commonly seeps into the food or beverages the container is holding. Given this information, BPA has been banned or restricted on several fronts, however the common replacements, bisphenol-S or bisphenol-F are similar to BPA in structure and toxic effect.
Canadians are advised to brace for a ‘polar coaster’ winter if the latest prediction from the Farmers’ Almanac is to be believed. The new edition of the 203-year-old publication reveals its forecast for the winter ahead –
and the outlook is bitterly cold. The almanac sees areas east of the Rockies to Quebec and the Maritimes bear the brunt of the cold conditions and areas from the Prairie provinces into the Great Lakes to be the most frigid. “We expect yet another wild ride this winter,” said almanac editor Pete Geiger in a press release, “with extreme temperatures swings and some hefty snowfalls.” The coldest outbreaks in late January into early February are forecast to hit those in the Prairies, with the almanac warning that very cold “Arctic air could cause temperatures to drop as low as -40 C.”It also suggests this cold blast will
bring intense bursts of heavy snow, especially in the snowbelt area of Ontario.“The Maritimes will be wet and white and cold,” Geiger added. British Columbia is forecast to see a milder time, with near-normal winter temperatures and precipitation predicted. Across the country, January looks to be especially stormy with frequent bouts of heavy precipitation, along with strong and gusty winds.“The middle part of Canada is going to get whacked. January in particular, there’s a spell in there where there’s some storms that are maybe 60 centimetres,” Geiger said.“It’s going to be a very cold winter with some interludes. There’s a lot of storms in there.”The almanac predicts worse than normal winter precipitation over much of Canada.“Polar coaster means there’s going to be some warm spells and some cold spells,” Geiger told CTV News Channel.“Particularly when you look in December, we use the word ‘winterlude,’ which
To minimize BPA exposure, Aline Petre MS, RD, recommends avoiding packaged foods, drinking from glass bottles, being selective with toys, not microwaving plastic, and only buying powdered infant formula. Whether we like it or not, plastics are here to stay. Despite the negativity surrounding them, plastics are critical to our modern lives. Without plastics, we would not have much of the technology we enjoy and depend on such as cell phones, computers, TVs, and lifesaving medical devices. Plastics’ versatility has raised our standard of living and helped shift reliance from natural materials in a safer, lighter, cheaper, reliable, and durable manner. It is incumbent upon each one of us to do our part in becoming plastic savvy to preserve our environment and protect our health. We must reduce our waste by choosing reusable and recyclable plastics to keep them out of landfills as well as out of the water we share with other living creatures. When we are done with our plastic products, we should take responsibility for delivering them to reputable recycling centers where they are converted into other useful products. The benefits of recycling are far reaching as they include reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, conserving natural resources, preventing pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials, and saving energy. As Muslims who seek to follow in the footsteps of our ultimate altruistic role model, Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), we should heed his teachings when he advised us to hold ourselves accountable for our actions and to avoid going into excess as reported by Abu Huraira, “Verily Allah likes three things for you and He disapproves three things for you. He is pleased with you that you worship Him and associate nor anything with Him, that you hold fast the rope of Allah, and be not scattered; and He disapproves for you irrelevant talk, persistent questioning and the wasting of wealth.”—(Sahih Muslim, Book 30, Hadith 12. Wealth comes in many forms, including a healthy environment. In the Quran, God commands us to avoid wasting resources and to be mindful of our guardianship role. He says, “But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.” (Quran 28:77). SOURCE: IFANCA
‘Freezing, frigid and frosty’: Farmers’ Almanac forecasts a harsh winter
means there’s already been some snow but now there’s going to be a break.”Spring will also be a little late in 2020, Geiger said, though not as late as it was in 2019.“We’ll get well through April and it will still be winter-ish,” he said. Geiger explained that the almanac uses a formula for its forecasts, developed in the 1800s when its first editor was a mathematician.“Over the course of 203 years we’ve had only seven prognosticators,” Geiger said. “Sunspot activity… the effect the moon has on the earth, all of that with the formula allows us to do it (forecast) two years in advance.“Does it mean I’m going to be 100 per cent accurate? No. But it does mean that I’m going to get the gist of what the winter is and if you get the almanac… you’re going to be able to see what storms are coming and when we call for it.” https://www.ctvnews.ca/

PM for steps to bring down prices of essential items
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the authorities concerned in the federal capital and two provinces — Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — to thrash out a plan to provide relief to the masses and ensure stability in prices of essential commodities. “Such a system should be devised that ensures no additional burden is put on the common man,” the prime minister was quoted as saying during a meeting on Wednesday. According to the Prime Minister Office (PMO), the meeting was attended, among others, by Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, the federal secretary interior, the chief secretaries of Punjab and KP, and the chief commissioner of Islamabad. The prime minister issued a directive for launch of a crackdown against hoarders and profiteers and the use of latest technology for the purpose. He was of the view that surprise inspection of wholesale markets must be ensured and people should be kept apprised about prices. Prime Minister Imran Khan stressed the need for transparency in auction of fruits and vegetables in wholesale markets so that no one could deprive farmers of their income and reward for hard work. The participants discussed a proposal for formation of market committees to control profiteering and hoarding. “Provision of Roti (bread) is a responsibility of the state and therefore all-out efforts
should be made in this regard,” the prime minister said. He revealed that the government was considering a proposal for provision of essential commodities to deserving families under the Ehsas programme. The chief secretaries of Punjab and KP briefed the participants on prices in their provinces and the action being taken against hoarders and profiteers. The meeting decided to address grievances of Nanbais (roti makers) after it was apprised about their reservations over the price stipulated by the government. Ease of Doing Business In a separate meeting Prime Minister Khan directed the Board of Investment (BOI) to complete the consultation process with stakeholders for streamlining and simplifying laws related to doing business. He called for completing the process of “guillotining” unnecessary regulations as soon as possible so as to improve ease of doing business. The meeting, which focused on removal of regulatory hurdles, was attended by the Adviser on Commerce, Mr Abdul Razak Dawood, Adviser on Institutional Reforms Dr Ishrat Hussain, BOI Chairman Zubair Gilani, Punjab Industries Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal and the World Bank’s Country Director for Pakistan. The prime minister said special attention should be paid to promotion of digital economy and digital solutions should be offered to firms in the information technology sector. He said facilitating investors and increasing ease of doing business

The prime minister was informed that in compliance with his directives, the ministries of petroleum and housing, the power division and BOI would present their proposals for removal of unnecessary regulatory hurdles in their jurisdiction.
