Sans flagpole ministers have a darker, deeper purpose? Was the visit to persuade our government to swallow someone else’s pride, to recognise our theocratic sibling — the state of Israel, younger to us by a year?
Did the visit of the Arab FMs have a HE recent visit of the foreign ministers of Sau- darker purpose?
T
di Arabia and its acolyte the United Arab Emirates could not have been without purpose. Neither of them wastes aviation fuel without reason. The ostensible objective of their sudden, unscheduled visit was, according to Pakistan officials, an endorsement of Pakistan’s principled stand regarding the atrocities being committed by India in occupied Jammu & Kashmir. This might well be true, except that the final statement issued by the Arab diplomats had the aftertaste of a blancmange — bland, without bite. By comparison, the Chinese foreign minister’s support was tart and sharply moulded. He emphasised the need for adherence by both India and Pakistan to the UN Charter, the relevant UNSC resolutions, and the sanctity of bilateral agreements. For the Chinese, continuity is everything. To the Indians, the past exists beyond a closed door, the key to which they throw away. Did the visit of the Arab foreign
Official circles have denied that there was any discussion on Israel. Understandably, until we do recognise Israel, that has to be the official line. Unofficially, though, there has always been contact between Pakistan and Israel. In 1947, the Quaid-iAzam received a secret message from David Ben Gurion (later the first prime minister of Israel), seeking Pakistan’s support for the recognition of Israel after its independence. Desultory contact continued until 2005 when, at president Pervez Musharraf ’s behest, Pakistan’s foreign minister Mr Khurshid Kasuri met his Israeli counterpart Silvan Shalom one moonlit night over dinner on the roof of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. Such a tryst could have led to something more lasting, had Musharraf not spoiled the dulcet atmosphere by insisting upon the prenuptial condition that Pakistan would recognise Israel only after reciprocal recognition of the state of Palestine.
Recently, an Israeli commentator, Prof Efraim Inbar, writing in the Israeli paper Haaretz reminded us that “in 1991, the United States convened the Madrid peace conference, all Arab states accepted the invitation and agreed to sit with the Israeli delegation, signalling a greater acceptance of Israel in a US-dominated world. Egypt and Jordan signed peace treaties with Israel. The 1993 Oslo Accords between Israel and the PLO reinforced this trend of political realism.” Ayesha Siddiqa (the bête noire of the establishment) writing in the same Israeli paper, commented that “confronted by a larger enemy in India, Pakistan’s military is fascinated, more than its civilians, by Israel’s capacity to keep its larger Arab neighbours at bay. Many in the security community have spoken about the dividends of recognising Israel. It could earn Islamabad some brownie points in the United States, especially in the eyes of those American Jews who are believed to be a powerful lobby.” Pakistan is over-familiar with the big neighbour syndrome. It has watched India collaborate with Israel in tactical assistance, military know-how and intelligence sharing. The suspicion of Israeli covert intervention against Pakistan reached its apogee when, in February 2019, in a briefing given by the DG ISPR following the aerial spat between the PAF and IAF, a reference was made to two Indian pilots being downed and captured by Pakistani aces. One was later
identified and confirmed as Indian; the second disappeared like invisible ink from the brief issued to the press. This led to all sorts of speculation: was the second pilot Israeli? Had he been in Indian uniform and detected only when his ID papers were found to be fake? Was he still a ‘guest’ of the Pakistani establishment? If that is true, and as we do not recognise Israel, such a situation would be a unique, intractable diplomatic conundrum. Going back into history, our non-recognition of Israel had been in imitation of the Saudis and, it is said, at their request. They asked; we obliged. We never examined the issue through the prism of our own national interest. Today, there is an un-denied rumour that both Saudi Arabia and the UAE have agreed to recognise Israel. Should they do so, that would leave us flying our flag of principle without the support of their mast. Should Pakistan again imitate our Saudi brethren and recognise Israel, it should not expect a change in Indo-Israeli tactics. India will always be Israel’s preferred ally in the region, especially after Prime Minister Modi described it as a ‘strategic partnership.’ There will undoubtedly be many hirsute naysayers in Pakistan political circles who will decry any move by the government towards a formal recognition of Israel. Time is against them. Their prejudice is no more than a flaccid flagpole. By: F. S. Aijazuddin

‘Sacred Month Muharram’! By: Gulshan Aalani The first month of Islamic New Year month of ‘Muharram’ also known as month of Allah-Creator, beginning of Muslim era the month of Hijraah-migration of Messenger Muhammad (saws) from mecca to Madinah/ Yathrib, accompanied by his faithful followers the newly converts to Islam consisting of some Jewish, christians, Quraish, Arabs Assyrians, some of the 12 tribes of Bani Israel-People of Prophet Israel-Jacob (AS). The reason of migration was to escape the barbaric extreme ill treatment of torture, by the authoririty and local pagans, simply for their declaration of accepting the true Creator-GOD, and HIS ‘Final closing Revelation’ of final warning and Divine Guidance. The month of great significance for a number of reasons that is marked by fasting and prayers, which are the symbols of devotion to our Creator of the Universe, and to celebrate the legacy of Divine intervention, and the hard works of our all the Prophets divinely selected to introduce our Creator of the Universe, and HIS Laws.
Muharram is one of the 4 sacred months (Rajab, Dhul Qaddah, Dhul Hijjah) in which the wars and fights are prohibited, except in self-defense if one is provoked and forced, yet it is advisable to avoid it altogether and hold peace; as these 4 months are of the great opportunity to avoid wars and go for ‘Peace treaty’ as the well known tradition-sunnah of Prophet (saws). Another special happy occasion in this month is the day of ‘Ashura’ (means 10) the day of salvation/freedom/Exodus, which falls on the 10th of Muharram that was initially celebrated as an EID day by our Jewish brethren. Following the Verses of the Quran on ‘Divine Rescue’, Prophet Muhammad (saws) decided to continue this tradition and recommended to Muslims to fast 2 days, to thank Allah in gratitude for the deliverance of the Bani IsraelJacob (AS) and granting victory to Prophet Moses (AS). To Honor this day of his victory Muslims fast voluntarily 2 days either 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th. Celebrating the miraculous victory of Prophet Moses (AS) and salvation of his people from the oppressor evil King Pharaoh. Also to recognize the Miraculous ‘Divine Rescue’ of Prophet Moses (AS) and his followers saved by none other
than the Supreme Being Almighty Allah-Creator of the Universe. HIS miraculous ‘Dividing of the sea’ into the crossing path is the reality of Divine phenomenon. Evidently, the oppressor King the slave master and his evil supporters earned God’s wrath for their cruelty, unjust system and major sins of ignoring Prophet Moses (AS), and for worshiping Idols, were eventually drowned. Quran 20: 80 -”O ye children of Israel! WE delivered you from your enemy and WE made a covenant with you on the right side of Mount Sinai--”And remember WE delivered you from the people of Pharaoh they set you hard tasks and punishments, slaughtered your sons and let your women folk live: there in was a tremendous trial from your lord: “And remember WE delivered you from the people of Pharaoh: “And remember WE divided the Sea for you and saved you and drowned Pharaoh’s people within your very sight: (Q. 2:49,50). Decade after that another tragedy occured on the 10th of Muharram, the murders of innocents, Prophet’s Grandson H. Hussain (RA) and his followers. Who are considered Martyrs, not dead but alive in Heaven.

FM sees risk of ‘accidental war’ over occupied Kashmir
GENEVA: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has warned that the situation in India-held Kashmir risks sparking an “accidental war”, and urged UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet to visit the troubled region. Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council session here on Wednesday, Mr Qureshi said he believed both Pakistan and India “understand the consequences of a conflict”. But with tensions soaring since New Delhi revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomy last month, he warned that “you cannot rule out an accidental war”. “If the situation persists... then anything is possible,” he said. India had imposed a military clampdown on held Kashmir on Aug 5 to prevent unrest as New Delhi revoked the disputed region’s autonomy. Mobile phone networks and internet are still cut off in all but a few pockets. Mr Qureshi, who on Tuesday appealed to the Human Rights
Council to launch an international investigation into the situation in India-held Kashmir, told reporters that he had spoken with Ms Bachelet and invited her to visit both the Indian and Pakistani parts of the region. “She should visit both places and report as objectively as she can so that the world knows what the true... situation is,” he added. According to foreign minister, Ms Bachelet had said she “was keen to visit”. Her office could not immediately be reached for confirmation. Mr Qureshi, meanwhile, ruled out the possibility of bilateral talks to resolve the tensions. “In this environment and with the mindset that we see in New Delhi today, I do not see any room for a bilateral engagement,” he said, adding that a multilateral forum or a third-party mediator would likely be needed. “If the US plays a role, that can be important because they have a considerable influence” in the region, he said. Addressing the 42nd session of the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Qureshi urged the council to constitute a commission of inquiry for investigation into human rights violations in India-held Kashmir, reminding the council that if India had nothing to hide it should allow unhindered access to the commission, international media and human rights organisations. He said the people of the occupied valley were suffering systematic and serial violations of their fundamental freedoms. “The forlorn, traumatised towns, mountains, plains and valleys of Indian-occupied Jammu & Kashmir reverberate today, with the grim reminders of Rwanda, Srebrenica, the Rohingya, and the pogrom of Gujarat,” he added.
Zardari slams ‘tyrannical forces of state against political opposition’
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former president Asif Ali Zardari “condemned the unleashing of tyrannical forces of the state against political opposition” in the country. “Tyranny, oppression and injustice have never triumphed, it shall not triumph in this case also,” the former president said in his message sent from Adiala jail and released by the party’s media office on the eve of Yaumul-Ashura on Monday. In his message, Mr Zardari also asked the people to rise above parochialism and forge unity among their ranks against all tyrannical forces. “The need for it has never been as great as it is today,” he said. “The underlying message of Yaum-ul-Ashura is to resist falsehood, tyranny and oppression at all costs, at all times and under all circumstances,” said Mr Zardari who has been in jail with his sister Faryal Talpur on judicial remand for the past two months in connection with the fake bank accounts case. Mr Zardari in his message also paid tribute to the people of India-held Kashmir. “On this day our thoughts are also

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has constituted a twomember bench to hear an appeal filed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif against his conviction in the Al-Azizia reference. sy regarding the leaked video of judge Arshad Malik surfaced in July. The video, purportedly showing judge Arshad Malik ‘confessing’ that he had convicted Nawaz Sharif under duress, was made public by Maryam Nawaz, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader, at a press conference. Accountability judge Arshad Malik, who was removed from his position after the leak, was the author of verdicts in the Al Azizia and Flagship references on Dec 24 last year. He convicted Mr Sharif in the Al-Azizia case, but acquitted him in the other. Judge Malik admitted that a video existed in which he was shown in
that PML-N supporters Nasir Butt, Nasir Janjua, Mahar Ghulam Jilani and Khurram Yousaf had purchased this video from accused Mian Tariq Mehmood and were pressuring him into acquitting Nawaz Sharif. The judge said in an affidavit that at a social gathering attended by both Nasir Janjua and Maher Ghulam Jilani, the former took him aside and requested him to give a verdict of acquittal in both references. The judge further claimed that the two individuals later met him at a party and offered him euros equivalent to almost Rs100 million and told him that foreign currency

Talk of lopsided accountability dangerous: CJP ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa on Wednesday expressed the fear that growing perception about what he referred to as a “lopsided process of accountability” needed urgent remedial measures to save it from losing credibility. “We, as a relevant organ of the state, also feel that growing perception that the process of accountability being pursued in the country at present is lopsided and is a part of political engineering is a dangerous perception and some remedial steps need to be
taken urgently so that the process does not lose credibility,” the CJP said while speaking at the opening ceremony of the new judicial year 2019-20. The event shown live at all registries of the Supreme Court through video link was also addressed by Attorney General Anwar Mansoor, Pakistan Bar Council vice chairman Syed Amjad Shah and Supreme Court Bar Association president Amanullah Kanrani. Described by senior lawyers as a fair and comprehensive response to matters con-
fronting the administration of justice, CJP Khosa in his speech emphasised that together the bench and the bar would resist with the fullest might any attempt from any quarter to destroy or damage the ideals of constitutionalism, rule of law and democracy. In recent times, he observed, the leadership of the bar had repeatedly voiced concern over receding political space in governance or the state and such concerns must not be ignored.. Netanyahu announces post-election plan Trump fires John Bolton as national to annex Jordan Valley security adviser
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to annex the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank if he wins next week’s general election, drawing sharp criticism from Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia. “Today, I announce my intention, after the establishment of a new government, to apply Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea,” Netanyahu said in a speech broadcast live on Israeli TV on Tuesday. That step, he said, could be taken “immediately after the election if I receive a clear mandate to do so from you, the citizens of Israel”. The Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea constitute almost 30 percent of the West Bank. Some 65,000 Palestinians and about 11,000 illegal Israeli settlers live in the area - most of which is under Israeli military control in what is referred to as Area C. Netanyahu - who is fighting for his political life in a closely contested election - reaffirmed the pledge to annex all Jewish settlements throughout the West Bank, but said such a move would not be made before publication of a long-awaited United States peace plan and consultations with President Donald Trump. “There is no change in United States policy at this time,” a US official said when asked whether the White House supported Netanyahu’s move. “We will release our Vision for Peace after the Israeli election and work to determine the best path forward to bring long-sought security, opportunity and stability to the region.” In 2017, Trump decided to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, reversing decades of US policy. The Palestinian leadership has since declared the US cannot be an honest peace broker in negotiations with Israel. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a statement “all signed agreements with Israel and the obligations resulting from them would end” if Netanyahu went
through with the move. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called the Israeli leader “a prime destroyer of the peace process”. “The Palestinian territory is not part of Netanyahu’s election campaign,” Shtayyeh said. Arab League foreign ministers condemned Netanyahu’s plan, saying it would undermine any chance of progress towards IsraeliPalestinian peace. Saudi Arabia said it considered the declaration a”violation of international law and a “very dangerous escalation against the Palestinians”. It called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation foreign ministers to discuss the move. The 2,400-square kilometre Jordan Valley, which Palestinians seek for the eastern perimeter of a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, stretches from the Dead Sea in the south to the Israeli city of Beit Shean in the north. Israel has long said it intends to maintain military control there under any peace agreement with the Palestinians. It captured the West Bank in a 1967 war. Annexing settlements would likely spell the end of any lingering hopes of establishing a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Netanyahu made no mention of what he would do with the territory’s more than two million Palestinian residents. Tamer Qarmout, from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, told Al Jazeera.......
U.K. opposition rages at Johnson after he suspends Parliament
Opposition politicians raged Tuesday at Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s five-week suspension of Parliament before the deadline for Brexit, which drew angry and unprecedented protests in the House of Commons. Parliament has been prorogued -- or suspended -- at the government’s request until Oct. 14, a drastic move that gives Johnson a respite from rebellious lawmakers as he plots his next move as he tries to lead Britain out of the European Union by Oct. 31. Opposition lawmakers chanted “Shame on you” and held up signs reading “Silenced” as Parliament was formally shut down in the early hours of Tuesday morning. As legislators implored House of Commons Speaker John Bercow not to comply, he expressed his displeasure, saying “this is not a standard or normal prorogation.” “It’s one of the longest for decades and it
represents ... an act of executive fiat,” Bercow said. The suspension came after lawmakers inflicted a series of defeats on Johnson’s Brexit plans. Johnson says the country must leave the EU at the end of October, with or without a divorce agreement to smooth the way. But many lawmakers fear a no-deal Brexit would be economically devastating, and are determined to stop him. Opposition legislators, backed by rebels in Johnson’s Conservative Party, passed a law that compels the government to ask the EU for a three-month delay if no deal has been agreed by Oct. 19. “I will not ask for another delay,” Johnson said. But he has few easy ways out of it. His options -- all of them extreme -- include disobeying the law, which could land him in court or even prison, and resigning so that someone else would have to ask for a delay. Legislators also demanded the government release, by Wednesday, emails and text messages among aides and officials relating to suspending Parliament and planning for Brexit amid allegations that the suspension is being used to circumvent democracy. Under parliamentary rules, the government is obliged to release the documents. In a statement, the government said it would “consider the implications of this vote and respond in due course.”........ US President Donald Trump on Tuesday forced out John Bolton, his hawkish national security adviser with whom he had significant disagreements on Iran, Afghanistan and a cascade of other global challenges. The two men offered opposing accounts on Bolton’s less than friendly departure, a leavetaking example of what had been a fractious relationship almost from the start. “I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration,” Trump tweeted. “I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week,” he added Bolton, however, said in a tweet that he had offered his resignation on Monday night and Trump said, “let’s talk about it tomorrow”. The departure comes at a trying moment for the Trump administration on the world stage, weeks before the United Nations General Assembly and as the president faces pressing decisions on a host of foreign policy issues. In recent months, tensions have risen between Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over influence in the president’s orbit and how to manage the president’s desire to negotiate with some of the world’s most unsavoury actors.Bolton held a press briefing with Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin later on Tuesday. During that briefing, Pompeo said there were definitely policy areas where he had different iews from Bolton on how to proceed. Bolton, a leading foreign policy hawk, was widely known to have pressed the president for a harder line on issues such as North Korea. Also a chief architect of Trump’s strong stance on Iran, Bolton had advocated a tougher approach on Russia and Afghanistan. Most recently, there was reportedly significant disagreement within the administration over Trump’s decision to host a nowcancelled meeting with Taliban leaders at
Camp David. US Senator Lindsey Graham, who was travelling with Trump on Monday, said reports of Bolton’s dissent on the Taliban meeting was a “bridge too far” for Trump. One Republican familiar with the disagreements between Trump and Bolton said the NSA’s opposition to a possible meeting between Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was a precipitating factor in the dismissal.French President Emmanuel Macron has been trying to broker such a meeting, possibly on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly, in the hope of salvaging the international Iran nuclear deal that Trump withdrew from. Bolton and the National Security Council staff were also viewed warily by some in the White House who viewed them as more attuned to their own agendas than the president’s - and some administration aides have accused Bolton’s staff of being behind leaks of information embarrassing to Trump. Bolton was Trump’s third NSA after Michael Flynn and HR McMaster. He was a surprise pick at the time, with a world view seemingly ill-fit to the president’s isolationist “America First” pronouncements. Trump had sometimes joked about Bolton’s image as a warmonger, reportedly saying in one Oval Office meeting that “John has never seen a war he doesn’t like”. Bolton championed hawkish foreign policy views dating back to the Reagan administration and became a household name over his vociferous support for the Iraq war as the US ambassador to the UN under George W Bush........ Taliban to continue fighting after Trump says talks ‘dead’ The Taliban on Tuesday pledged to continue fighting against United States forces in Afghanistan after President Donald Trump said peace talks with the armed group were “dead”. In a statement to Al Jazeera, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Washington would regret turning its back on talks spearheaded by high-level officials from both sides. “We had two ways to end occupation in Afghanistan, one was jihad and fighting, the other was talks and negotiations,” Mujahid said. “If Trump wants to stop talks, we will take the first way and they will soon regret it,” he said. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who has been sidelined from the talks, renewed his call for peace and demanded that the Taliban should agree to a ceasefire amid rising civilian casualties. On Monday, Trump told reporters: “They’re dead. They’re dead,” referring to negotiations with the armed group, adding that he was still thinking about troop withdrawal in the country. Two days prior, he abruptly announced he was cancelling secret meetings at Camp David with the Taliban and the Afghan president, ending months of US nego-
tiations with Taliban leaders - who control large parts of the country. The talks were aimed at securing a peace deal to end 18 years of war. The developments came after US and Taliban officials last week agreed on a draft deal that could have led to a withdrawal of troops from the US’s longest war. In announcing the cancellation of Sunday’s planned meetings, Trump cited a Taliban attack in Kabul last week in which 12 people, including a US soldier, were killed. It was unclear whether the talks were cancelled indefinitely or only suspended for the time being. But Trump told reporters on Monday, “as far as I’m concerned, they’re dead”. In the wake of Trump’s decision to scrap talks on Saturday, the Taliban said that the cancellation of the talks would “lead to more losses for the US, “harm [its] credibility” and “show their anti-peace stance in [a]
more clear way”. Source: Al-Jazeera

FAST VOLUNTARILY “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘The best of fasting after Ramadhan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram.’ “Reported by Muslim, 1982 3. Know WHY you fast on ‘Ashura. ‘Ashura’ in history: Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura’. He said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Musa fasted on this day.’ He said, ‘We have more right to Musa than you,’so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day.” [Reported by al-Bukhari, 1865] ” so we fast on this day to venerate it.” [Al-Bukhari] A version narrated by Imam Ahmad adds: “This is the day on which the Ark settled on Mount Judi, so Nuh fasted this day in thanksgiving,” and “commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day”. Fasting on ‘Ashura’ was a gradual step in the process of introducing fasting as a prescribed obligation in Islam. Fasting appeared in three forms. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah, he told the Muslims to fast on three days of every month and on the day of ‘Ashura’, then Allah made fasting obligatory when He said (interpretation of the meaning): ” … observing the fasting is prescribed for you … ” [Al-Qur’an2:183] [Ahkam al-Qur’an by al-Jassas, part 1] 4. SEEK THE REWARD OF FASTING on the day of Ashura. Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of ‘Ashura’, and this month, meaning Ramadhan.” Reported by Al-Bukhari, 1867 The meaning of his being keen was that he intended to fast on that day in the hope of earning the reward for doing so. The Prophet said: “For fasting the day of ‘Ashura’, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” [ Muslim, 1976]
ACTION POINT: Ask Allah ‘azza wa jall now to enable you to fast and gain this amazing reward. Think of all your sins the last year. And truly beg Allah ‘azza wa jall to include you in this great reward. ACTION POINT: Remember That Fasting Is Not Only With The Stomach, But Also With The Tongue And Other Limbs – Don’t Argue, Shout, Backbite, Swear And Lie! 5. Which Day is ‘Ashura’? An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “‘Ashura’ and Tasu’a’ are two elongated names [the vowels are elongated] as is stated in books on the Arabic language. Our companions said: ‘Ashura’ is the tenth day of Muharram and Tasu’a’ is the ninth day. 6. It is Mustahabb (Encouraged) to Fast Tasu’a’ with Ashura’ ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fasted on ‘Ashura’ and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘If I live to see the next year, in sha Allah, we will fast on the ninth day too.’ But it so happened that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away before the next year came.” [Reported by Muslim, 1916] 7. Know the Reason Why it is Mustahabb to Fast on Tasu’a’ The intention behind it is to be different from the Jews, who only venerate the tenth day. This opinion was reported from Ibn ‘Abbas. To be on the safe side and make sure that one fasts on the tenth, in case there is some error in sighting the crescent moon at the beginning of Muharram and the ninth is in fact the tenth. Ruling on Fasting Only on the Day of ‘Ashura’: Shaykh ul-Islam said: “Fasting on the day of ‘Ashura’ is an expiation for a year, and it is not makruh to fast only that day ” [Al-Fatawa al-Kubra, part 5] In Tuhfat al-Muhtaj by Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, it says: “There is nothing wrong with fasting only on ‘Ashura’.” [Part 3, Bab Sawm at-Tatawwu’] 8. FEEL THE BEAUTY of the expiation! Imam an-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It expiates for all minor sins, i.e., it brings forgiveness of all sins except major sins.” Then he said (may Allah have mercy on him): “Fasting the day of ‘Arafah expiates for two years, and the day of ‘Ashura’ expiates for one year. If when a person says ‘Amin’ it coincides with the ‘Amin’ of the angels, he will be forgiven all his previous sins … Each one of the things that we have mentioned will bring expiation. If there are minor sins for which expiation is needed, expiation for them will be accepted; if there are no minor sins or major sins, good deeds will be added to his account and he will be raised in status … If he had committed major sins but no minor sins, we hope that his major sins will be reduced.”[Al-Majmu’ Sharh alMuhadhdhab, part 6, Sawm Yawm ‘Arafah]
9. Don’t rely Too Much on the Reward for Fasting Some people who are deceived rely too much on things like fasting on ‘Ashura’ or the day of ‘Arafah, to the extent that some of them say, “Fasting on ‘Ashura’ will expiate for the sins of the whole year, and fasting on the day of ‘Arafah will bring extra rewards.” Ibn al-Qayyim said: “This misguided person does not know that fasting in Ramadhan and praying five times a day are much more important than fasting on the day of ‘Arafah and ‘Ashura’, and that they expiate for the sins between one Ramadhan and the next, or between one Friday and the next, so long as one avoids major sins. But they cannot expiate for minor sins unless one also avoids major sins; when the two things are put together, they have the strength to expiate for minor sins. Among those deceived people may be one who thinks that his good deeds are more than his sins, because he does not pay attention to his bad deeds or check on his sins, but if he does a good deed he remembers it and relies on it. This is like the one who seeks Allah’s forgiveness with his tongue (i.e., by words only), and glorifies Allah by saying “Subhanallah” one hundred times a day, then he backbites about the Muslims and slanders their honor, and speaks all day long about things that are not pleasing to Allah. This person is always thinking about the virtues of his tasbihat (saying “Subhanallah”) and tahlilat (saying “La ilaha illallah”) but he pays no attention to what has been reported concerning those who backbite, tell lies and slander others, or commit other sins of the tongue. They are completely deceived.” [Al-Mawsu’ah alFiqhiyyah, part 31, Ghurur] 10. Mind these Innovations Common on ‘Ashura’ Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about Source:https://understandquran.com/muharramthe things that people do on ‘Ashura’, such

B.C. government worried about ICBC, global uncertainty affecting province’s bottom line Finance Minister Carole James says B.C.’s economy is still “strong and resilient” but is concerned about global “uncertainty” and problems at ICBC. James released the province’s first quarter fiscal numbers on Tuesday. B.C. remains the only province in Canada with a AAA credit rating from the three main rating agencies and is forecasting a budget surplus of $179 million for the fiscal year. The surplus is down from the $274 million forecast in February. “With the kind of external pressures we are facing we are continuing to practice prudence,” James said. “There is no question the global economy is a risk. The tensions create an environment that is not good for trade.” British Columbia continues to have the highest economic growth in Canada. But the provincial government is still building in $2 billion in contingencies in order to deal with any potential surprises in the economy. One major surprise around the corner could be ICBC. The province forecast the public insurer would lose $61 million in the first three months of the fiscal year, but is now reporting ICBC made $55 million after major changes came into effect on April 1. But there are two ongoing legal cases involving the province’s changes. The courts have still not ruled on whether the province is allowed to restrict the number of expert reports lawyers can use in settlement cases and whether B.C. can legally cap settlements for “soft-tissue injuries” as defined by the province. Together, the changes are forecast to save the province more than $1 billion this year. “There are a couple of risks we still face with ICBC. There are back claims that could still come in and add to the deficit,” James said. “One of the other issue is there are still some outstanding lawsuits that exist and that could have a massive impact on ICBC and the economic situation that it is facing.” For the third straight year home sales are
down across the province. Based on the first three months of the year, home sales are down 16.1 per cent and average home sale prices are down 5.6 per cent. But while prices are down, housing starts are up. The province has seen housing starts up from 40,857 in 2018 to a projected 48,739 in 2019. “We are going to monitor this closely. I don’t think there is a British Columbian, particularly young people trying to get into the market, that would say we have hit affordability. We said when we put in our 30-point plan we wanted to see moderation in the market. We are now seeing moderation in the market,” James said. “There isn’t one change that will address the affordability crisis. There is not one tax, there is not one measure that will address it.” The province’s 30 point plan includes the Speculation Tax, increases to the foreign buyers’ tax and a commitment to building new housing units. The province has also put a renewed focus on renters in B.C. One of the previous cash cows for government, Property Transfer Tax revenues, are down $385 million from where they were forecast. “For too long, the previous government put maximizing property transfer tax revenues first while speculators, and even money launderers, took advantage of our overheated housing market,” James said. “We are not interested in short-term gains at the expense of future generations.” Source: Global News
338 ridings, 40 days, 1 vote: Election campaign kicks off
OTTAWA – Justin Trudeau has set in motion the 2019 federal election campaign, setting up his re-election bid as a choice for forward progress, while his opponents begin to position themselves as ready alternatives. On Wednesday morning, Gov. Gen. Julie Payette accepted Trudeau’s request to dissolve the 42nd Parliament, setting in motion Canada’s 43rd federal race, with campaigns in all 338 ridings. It will be a 40-day race to the ballot box, with all party leaders crisscrossing the country in an effort to pitch themselves, their candidates, and their platforms to Canadians, before election day on Oct. 21. Speaking to the media outside of Rideau Hall with a backdrop of Liberal supporters, Trudeau took the first opportunity to frame what the election will be about, followed by the other party leaders. Responding to the election call from strategically-selected locations across the country, the other federal leaders are offering their first real campaign messages. The latest Nanos Research numbers show that the Liberals have a slight lead heading into the campaign, sitting at 34.6 per cent in the polls. The Conservatives have 30.7, the NDP are at 16.6, Greens are at 11 per cent, the Bloc Quebecois have 4 per cent, and the People’s Party are sitting at 1 per cent. Canadians are also split on whether it’s time for a change in government, with nearly a fifth of those surveyed by Nanos Research saying they are still undecided, leaving questions about what the voter turnout will be like this time around.
“We’ve got a tight race. There’s no majority government in sight right now, and it’s anyone’s game,” said pollster Nik Nanos. Elections Canada estimates that the total cost for the 2019 campaign will clock in at approximately $500 million. Speaking to the media outside of Rideau Hall with a backdrop of Liberal supporters, Trudeau took the first opportunity to frame what the election will be about. “This fall Canadians once again get to vote for the kind of Canada they want to live in. We’ve all got a choice to make, keep moving forward and build on the progress we’ve made, or go back to the politics of the Harper years,” Trudeau said. He spoke about what Liberals accomplished over the last four years, from a tax cut for the middle class and the Canada Child Benefit plan that has raised 900,000 Canadians out of poverty, to a renegotiated NAFTA deal that has yet to be ratified domestically and now will have to be reintroduced in the next Parliament. Over the last four years the Liberals passed 88 pieces of government legislation. “At the end of the day, politics is about people. Maybe you’re a recent grad, or a new Canadian. Maybe you’re raising your kids, or living out your golden years in retirement. Whoever you are, you deserve a real plan for your future,” Trudeau said speaking to several key voter blocks, all whose support the Liberal Party will need in order to win a second mandate. 40-day race to voting day. After the election call, Trudeau flew immediately from Ottawa to the West Coast for a rally in the riding of Vancouver Kingsway, which began more than 30 minutes after its scheduled start time. Though he represents the Montreal riding of Papineau, Trudeau took pains to tout his connections to B.C., saying “it just made sense” to kick off his second federal election campaign as Liberal leader in the province again, after doing so in 2015. “My friends, it is so good to be home,” he said at the beginning of his remarks, flanked on stage by Liberal candidates and staffers. “You all know how proud I am to be a son and a grandson of British Columbia.” He went on to describe time spent visiting
the Lower Mainland as a child and later working as a teacher in Coquitlam and Vancouver. “Some of my best memories in the world are right here in B.C.,” he said. Outside the Italian Cultural Centre, where Trudeau was speaking, dozens of protesters from across the political spectrum gathered. Kris Sims of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation was among them, along with a Pinnochioinspired, long-nosed mascot named “Fibber.” “We’re here today with our friend, Fibber, with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation because the Prime Minister broke his promise,” Sims said. “He looked Canadians dead in the eye and he promised, during the last election, he was going to balance the budget.” A much larger group of protesters
attended the event to protest Trudeau’s continued commitment to building the Trans Mountain Pipeline. Organizer Peter McCartney said his group gathered to show the Liberal leader that the fight over the pipeline “is not over.” “We think the Prime Minister needs to look at the facts on this pipeline,” he said. “The economic case for it has fallen apart since it was first proposed in 2012 … There’s no need for it.” One other federal party leader was in B.C. for the first official day of the 2019 campaign. Green leader Elizabeth May started her campaign in Victoria, where she joined candidates from Vancouver Island and B.C.’s Lower Mainland for an early-morning event Source: bc.ctvnews.ca
On June 3, there was an individual (not a student) who entered into our prayer area at the SFU Surrey campus and he was caught defacating (urinating) in our prayer area. This was done intentionally. Afterwards, he was caught stating, “F*** all muslims”. Then he began to lay down and relax. One of our executives witnessed the act and ran to inform security about what had occurred. Security escorted the individual out of the prayer area and banned him from entering SFU Surrey. My name is Ahmed Khan and I am the The second incident took place on the same President of the SFU Muslim Students As- day at our Burnaby campus a couple hours afsociation. We had 2 incidents occur at ter the first one. An individual came into our June 3rd, 2019 prayer area and opened up our storage closet
and grabbed our donation box. They stole some money from there and threw the box on the floor and ran away. He was not caught and we have no description of his appearance. Luckily we had removed most of the money from the box so not much was stolen. Both of these incidents have been reported to the RCMP and various media outlets such as Omni News, News1130 and RedFM have covered this story. SFU has responded well and have provided us a temporary new room until Fall. In Fall, they will be providing us a new permanent prayer room which will provide students with a sense of security and privacy while praying. Vice Consul Ms. Ayesha Salim Malik conducted very well this event with Allma Iqbal’s poetry. Molana A.L.Nomani recited the Talawat e Quran and then made the Duaa. In the end, Dr. Muhammad Tariq expressed Pakistani Government concerns and actions taken at the worst situation in Kashmir since last 25 days Curfew(till Aug 30th).
An Emergency forum on Kashmir at Surrey Jameh Masjid
On Sept 10, 2019 the “Kashmir Collaboration Committee” arranged a community forum about the human rights violations in Kashmir. This committee is a joint platform of various organizations who are working together in solidarity with the people of Kashmir to highlight the current tragic and catastrophic plight of the Kashmiri people. The forum was held at the community room of Surrey Jamia Masjid. There were around 100 attendees. The main purpose of the forum was to hand over the postcards collected over the past few weeks asking Canada to take action on the Kashmir situation. Over 2500 postcards were mailed to the Prime Minister’s office and another 3000 postcards were handed over at the forum. The postcards were signed by the residents of Canada and urgently requests Canada to take five specific actions in regards to Kashmir. These postcards were handed over to respectable MP Mr. Sukh Dhali-
wal and he promised to deliver them to the Prime Minister. In attendance at the forum were the local liberal MPs Sukh Dhahliwal, Ken Hardie, and Randeep Sarai. The MPs also expressed their concern regarding the devastating condition of the valley and assured us that they would play their role to the best of their capacity. Various community representatives expressed their concern that Canada is not doing enough to address the serious human rights violations occurring in Kashmir. The five points in the postcards were: 1. What India has done goes against many UN Security Council resolutions! UN has passed various resolutions in the past in support of the people of Kashmir. Canada secure a seat in the Security Council and should speak loud and clear in support of past resolutions. 2. The brutal siege of Kashmir is now over 5 weeks long!
People are suffering, including the elderly, sick, and children. They are struggling to get necessities. Over 6000 people have been detained without charges or due processes. We are looking forward to Canada to at least speak in support of human rights. 3. Human rights are human rights, whether they are in Hong Kong, Venezuela or Kashmir. Canada must not allow for any discrimination or prioritization of human rights. 4. Canada must reestablish its position as an honest broker in global affairs. That includes being steadfast in the face of a trade backlash. Canada should take the lead as global peace builder. If we will keep a blind eye to this issue, the fire will spread across the whole
globe. This is dangerous for our future generations and us. 5. Please speak to the leaders of both Pakistan and India so that the matter can be solved with peaceful dialogues. Canada can take a leading role in deescalating and resolving this crisis before it becomes more severe as both Pakistan and India have nuclear weapons. The Kashmir Collaboration Committee has been active over the past few weeks with various actions including rallies, MP visits, and forums. There is much more to be done. If any other organization or group want to join the Kashmir Collaboration Committee please contact Furquan Gehlen at 604-603-8741 or FJGHOME@yahoo.com.

He spoke about the importance of love and status of Ahlul Bayt in our lives for all the time not only for such a curtain period or in certain month. He said in Darood e Ibrahimi, when we recite “Ahal Mohammad(saw)” it’s clear to every faith that we Sunni Muslims and all others who believe on it what does it means? And also, the respect and importance of others 3 Khulafa e Rasheedeen and all other Sahabas (Prophet Mohammad (saw) companions status remain
there. Allah (swt) granted to Mohammad (saw) first time Hassan and Hussain(R.A). Prophet (saw) said Ah, Allah “ I love my grandchildren and You Love to them”. Now socalled Syed, you are looking around you, but Ahal Mohammad(saw)” never accept Sadaqa and Charity. You can gift or help the needy Sadaat family if you feel they are really in trouble. Tribute to Shuhada-e-Karbala at Bullay Shah Academy
Bullay Shah Academy and Anjuman Khudam-e-Suffia commemorated the lives and sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) and Ahle-Bayat at Karbala in a spiritual gathering on Saturday, August 31, 2019. The event was attended by a large number of men, women and children, representing a healthy cross section of the community. The proceedings began with a solemn recitation of the Holy Quran by the young hafiz Ahmed Raza. Mr. Bob Ibrahim welcomed the chief guests and attendants on behalf of the organizing committee. Several prominent Naat Khawans including Haji Sharif, Br. Shahreyar, Br. Muzammil and Br. Ijaz Hussain presented tributes to the august household of Ahl-e-Bayat, honouring their sacrifice for Islam. Maulana Abdul Latif Naumani then spoke at length about the martyrdom of Hazrat Omar Farooq (RA), the exemplary relations and respect between the blessed companions of Holy Prophet PBUH and His Ahl-e-Bayat (RA) and stressed upon the need of learning from their examples to foster unity in the um-
mah today. In his masterful and transcendent keynote speech, Qibla Pir Afzal Ahmed Naqshbandi, who also presided over the gathering, noted that the love of Ahl-e-Bayat is the key to success in this world and the next. Allah SWT has mentioned in the Holy Quran that He has purified the Ahl-e-Bayat with extensive purification. Thus, the easiest way to become a pious Muslim and gain purity of thought and action is through nurturing the love of Ahle-Bayat in one’s heart and emulating their example. Just as Allah has purified them, they, too, purify anyone who comes to their door with faith in his heart. Their lovers are able to subdue the inciting nafs (an-nafs alʾammārah) and elevate themselves to high spiritual stations. On the Day of Judgement, such people will be safe under the shadow of Allah’s Throne. In a moving and stirring conclusion, he reminded the participants that Allah does not reject any supplication made by any true lover of Ahl-e-Bayat in their Holy name and requested everyone to make due for the whole ummah.
Those wishing to hear the full address of Qibla Pir Afzal Ahmed may do as at Anjuman Khudam-e-Suffia’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/aks00786. The next monthly gathering will be held on September 28th. The organizing committee welcomes everyone to attend these spiritual events.

Leaders drilled on Quebec secularism bill on campaign launch day
OTTAWA – Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau was repeatedly asked about his stance on Quebec’s controversial secularism legislation on Wednesday, as he put forth his bid to serve a second term as Canada’s prime minister. Trudeau fielded questions about why his party has been hesitant to intervene on Bill 21, which the Quebec government has said will ensure religious neutrality across the province.“I’m totally against Bill 21, I think in a free society we shouldn’t legitimize or allow discrimination against anyone. I’m happy Quebecers themselves are going against this law,” he said at a press conference outside Rideau Hall in Ottawa. However, he said it would be “counterproductive” for a federal government to insert itself into a provincial dispute.“We will con-
tinue to monitor closely and evaluate our position,” he added. Trudeau has faced criticism for not taking a firm enough stance on the issue. Bill 21 would ban public figures from donning religious symbols and clothing. Some have speculated that the Liberal leader is staying more tight-lipped as the party seeks to pick up seats in Quebec. Speaking to reporters in Trois-Rivieres, Que., Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer was also pressed on the bill. “We do not have the intention of intervening in this case. We have made it clear that this is not something that we would do at the federal level, and that has been our position from the beginning,” he said. There are 40 days until election night on
Oct. 21, and Quebec remains a key battleground, as it was in 2015. Recent polls show Liberals holding strong support in the region, while the Conservatives lag behind and the NDP trail even further. In a campaign advertisement released last week, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh addressed the discrimination he would face as a turbaned Sikh in Quebec. Under the legislation, he would have to remove his turban to work as a police officer or school teacher. “I think about all the people I’ve met in
MONTREAL, QC – Sep 6, the Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, announced the measures he would take, as Prime Minister, to safeguard Canadians’ personal data online. “The Trudeau Liberal government has been particularly careless on this front,” said Scheer at the Montreal Chamber of Com-
merce. “Just recently a Quebec company made headlines, but they are not the only casualty to this crime. Many Canadian companies are at risk of being the next victims of these criminals.” “It’s past-time the federal government did something to protect Canadians’ information online,” said Scheer. Increasingly, parts of our lives, important interactions and transactions are moved online. Paying your monthly bills, transferring money between accounts, making large purchases, and investing is all done with the click of a button or the tap of a device. It is vital, that the government adopt new policies and keep up with technology to make sure that Canadians – their money and their personal information – is protected. A Conservative government would take a three-pronged approach to this issue: sen-
sible regulation, standards and education to ensure that consumers can make informed decisions, and strong oversight at the highest levels of government. •We will ensure that plain language use agreements are put in place so that companies collecting electronic data must receive informed consent from Canadians. •We will apply regulatory standards for the ethical and secure use of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things and create the Canada Cyber Safe brand to ensure that consumers know when products have met rigorous security standards. • An expert committee with industry leaders will define binding cyber security standards for critical infrastructure sectors and penalties for non- compliance. “As Prime Minister, I will also establish a Cabinet Committee on Cyber Security and
Data Privacy and conduct periodic cyber security penetration testing on all government departments and establish performance benchmarks for senior public servants,” said Scheer. FACTS : •Today, Canadians are connected more than ever before, sharing and storing personal information online. •Only thirty-four percent of companies have data protection and control measures. •Fifty-four per cent of Canadian businesses were affected by cybersecurity incidents that prevented employees from doing their jobs. •Justin Trudeau’s Government has failed to take meaningful action on this front and we have seen numerous incidents impacting millions of Canadians.
Surrey, BC - Canada’s changing economy and investments in infrastructure make skills training critical to our future. The skilled trades offer good, well-paying, middle-class jobs, and the Government of Canada is committed to supporting key groups, such as women, Indigenous people, newcomers and persons with disabilities access these jobs. That’s why today, Ken Hardie, Member of Parliament for Fleetwood – Port Kells, on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, announced a project that will invest in training equipment and materials to help apprentices get the skills they need to succeed. This project is funded under the Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP). The Government of Canada will provide$ 424,213 over five years via a focused project, ‘Technology and an Inclusive Workforce: Forging our Future Sheet Metal Industry’ which is being delivered by the Sheet Metal Industry Training Board. The Board will purchase innovative equipment that will help participants as they develop their technical skills and be better prepared for the emerging technology
trends in the sheet metal industry. The Board will also collaborate with broadbased partners to develop strategies to build a more inclusive workforce. UTIP projects help unions across Canada improve the quality of training through investments in up-to-date training equipment and materials, and support innovation and enhanced partnerships to address long-standing challenges that limit apprenticeship outcomes in Canada. As a result of this investment, more apprentices will be able to develop their skills, complete their training and find good, well-paying jobs.
As Canada’s economy continues to grow and create good, well-paying jobs, the Government is committed to ensuring that all Canadians share in and benefit from this success. Quotes “Canada’s future success depends on building an economy that is as inclusive as it is innovative. That’s why our government is investing in this project that will help apprentices in the City of Surrey, and especially those who face additional barriers to participate and succeed in the skilled trades, start exciting and well-paying careers in the trades.”– The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Min-
ister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour “There are tremendous opportunities in Canada’s trades for highly rewarding careers. Our government’s support through the Union Training and Innovation Program will connect more Canadian workers with these opportunities. This collaboration with unions to promote skills training that leads to good-paying jobs is a boost for our economy and a powerful way forward toward more prosperous middle-class families.” Ken Hardie – Member of Parliament for Fleetwood – Port Kells

Sponsorship of undeclared family members
Ottawa, September 6, 2019 – When people apply to become permanent residents in Canada, they’re asked to declare all family members on their application (spouse, common-law partner, dependent children), including those who aren’t accompanying them to Canada. For various reasons, including lack of awareness or lack of knowledge of a family member’s whereabouts in a conflict situation, many newcomers failed to declare some family members on their application. By not including these family members, applicants made them ineligible from being sponsored to come to Canada for life.
To address this unintended consequence, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced on May 31, 2019, a pilot whereby a resettled refugee, a person conferred refugee protection in Canada, or a person who was sponsored as a spouse, partner or dependent child themselves, will be able to sponsor undeclared immediate family members (a spouse, partner or dependent child). The pilot will begin on September 9, 2019, and run for 2 years. It will facilitate family reunification and ensure that dependants who weren’t declared in their family member’s immigration application are not further
penalized and barred from entering Canada. It will also enable some newcomers to sponsor undeclared family members. To uphold program integrity and ensure that this pilot project doesn’t make the system vulnerable to fraud and misrepresentation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is limiting eligibility of sponsors to those who immigrated to Canada as a resettled refugee, were granted refugee protection in Canada or were sponsored as a close family member. The applicants must still meet all eligibility requirements and prove they’re admissible For more information, please see the to Canada. Public Policy.

Aftermath of the September 11 attacks
T
From Wikipedia,
he September 11 attacks transformed the first term of President George W. Bush and led to what he has called the Global War on Terrorism. The accuracy of describing it as a “war” and its political motivations and consequences are the topic of strenuous debate. The U.S. government increased military operations, economic measures and political pressure on groups which it accused of being terrorists, as well as increasing pressure on governments and countries which it accused of sheltering them. October 2001 saw the first military action initiated by the US. Under this policy, the NATO invaded Afghanistan in order to remove the Taliban regime (which harbored al-Qaeda) and capture al-Qaeda forces. The war, however, is ongoing and it has not been won. Critics point out that the Afghan conflict has contributed to the destabilization of neighbouring Pakistan and Afghanistan itself is far from at peace— Lord Ashdown, British diplomat and former international High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, has gone as far as to describe the country as “a failed state”. The US government has also asserted that the US invasion of Iraq is connected to 9/11.
Rescue and recovery
After all three attacks that took place on September 11, 2001, society as a whole suffered dramatically. Recovery took years, and the economy declined drastically after the attacks. Various first responders came together that day to unite and help as much as possible. Whether they were police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, or ordinary civilians, the main objective was to cooperate and help the wounded. More than 1,500 first responders, ironworkers, engineers, heavy equipment operators and other workers worked at Ground Zero to attempt to find survivors and clean up the wreckage.[4] Cranes and bulldozers were brought in along with search and rescue dogs[5] in order to locate survivors and bodies of the deceased, however, operations were hindered by the presence of approximately two feet of soot at the site, which obscured objects and bodies. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, only 20 survivors were pulled alive from the rubble,[7] although there were a number of human remains and belongings that were removed from the site. The day after the attack, then-mayor Rudy Giuliani told reporters that they were receiving mobile phone calls from people trapped in the debris.[6] The task of removing debris and rubble continued well into 2002, with some 108,000 truckloads of 1.8 million tons of rubble removed by May 2002.
Hazards
Outside of the general hazards due to fires, falling debris, heavy machinery, broken metal, and the hazardous air conditions, there were also hidden concerns within the clean up zone. The parking garage under the World Trade Center at the time of the attacks held nearly 2,000 automobiles, which each held an estimated 5 gallons of gasoline, which could ignite and explode. Other concerns were around buried fuel tanks that were lo cated on the site, and the 1.2 million rounds of ammunition that were housed at Building 6 for the use of the U.S. Customs Service. US public reaction Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, George W. Bush’s job approval rating soared to 86%.[10] On September 20, 2001, the president spoke before the nation and a joint-session of Congress, regarding the events of that day, the intervening nine days of rescue and recovery efforts, and his intent in response to those events in going after the terrorists who orchestrated the attacks. In the speech, he characterized the speech itself as being akin to the President’s customary State of the Union address. The attacks also had immediate and overwhelming effects upon the United States population. People began rallying around the popularized phrase, “United We Stand,” in hopes of being resilient and keeping the American spirit alive in the face of a devastating attack. The majority of the US population rallied behind President Bush and the federal government in widespread support to the recovery and the expectant reaction to the attacks. The highly visible role played by Rudy Giuliani, the Mayor of New York City, won him high praise nationally and in New York City.[11] He was named Person of the Year by Time magazine for 2001, and at times had a higher profile in the US than President George W. Bush. Two major public reactions to the attacks were a surge of public expressions of patriotism not seen since World War II, marked most often by displays of the American flag; and an unprecedented level of respect, sympathy, and admiration for New York City and New Yorkers as a group by Americans in other parts of the United States. Some criticized this particular reaction, noting that not everyone who died was from New York City (for example, some of the passengers on the planes), and that the Arlington, Virginia community also suffered in the attacks. Many people joined together to help the victims. Gratitude toward uniformed public-safety workers, and especially toward firefighters, was widely expressed in light of both the drama of the risks taken on the scene and the high death toll among the workers. Many people paid tribute to the police officers and fire fighters who died during the attacks by wearing NYPD and FDNY hats. The number of casualties among the emergency service personnel was unprecedented. Blood donations saw a surge in the weeks after 9/11. According to a report by the Journal of the American Medical Association, “... the number of blood donations in the weeks after the September 11, 2001, attacks was markedly greater than in the corresponding weeks of 2000 (2.5 times greater in the first week after the attacks; 1.3–1.4 times greater in the second to fourth weeks after the attack).”[12] At the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show that took place in New York in February 2002, a tribute was paid to the
Security and military actions
The evolution of security and protective services changed tremendously due to the attacks. Immediate changes included air travel policies, airport security and screening, and guidelines that must be obeyed before getting on board. Congress immediately responded after the terrorist attack by passing the Aviation and Transportation Security Act,[53] which applied to different types of transportation, not just air travel. Additional screening was another main focus that took place during the period after the attacks, and many passengers were than one million Syrian are dead and more than five million were forced to take shelter in New York, it also destroyed four Muslim in refugee camps. Anniversary of the Tragedy of 9/11
By: Imam Syed Soharwardy Calgary) Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT) and the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC) strongly condemn the attacks on 9/11/2001 in New York. The terrorism on 9/11 did not only kill nearly 3000 people
search and rescue dogs who not only assisted in locating survivors and bodies from the rubble, but were also inside the World Trade Center buildings before they collapsed. Backlash and hate crimes See also: Islamophobia In the weeks following the attacks, there was a surge in incidents of harassment and hate crimes against South Asians, Middle Easterners, and anyone thought to be “Middle Eastern-looking” people—particularly Sikhs, because Sikh males usually wear turbans, which are stereotypically and erroneously associated with Muslims by many Americans. Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh man, was one of the first victims of this backlash; he was shot dead on September 15 at the gas station he owned in Mesa, Arizona. Mark Anthony Stroman, a white supremacist, killed two men and injured a third in a shooting spree beginning September 15 in Dallas, Texas. His victims, including Bangladeshi American Rais Bhuiyan, were all targeted because they looked “of Muslim descent”. His motive for the killings was revenge for the 9/11 attacks. On July 20, 2011, Stroman was executed for the crime.[13] In many cities there were reports of vandalism against mosques and other Islamic institutions, including some cases of arson. In the year after the attack, anti-Muslim hate crimes jumped 1,600 percent and this is further aggravated by a climate of prejudice that manifests in different ways. The only death officially recorded as a homicide in New York City on September 11 was Henryk Siwiak, a Polish immigrant who was shot in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. While he had taken a wrong turn on his way to a new job onto a street known for high rates of robbery and drug dealing, his family has theorized he may have been the victim of a hate crime in the wake of the attacks, since he was wearing camouflage clothing, had dark hair and spoke imperfect, heavily accented English—all of which may have led someone to believe he had something to do with the attackers.[19] The case remains unsolved; police are open to the family’s theory but have not classified the killing as a bias crime. In 2008, author Moustafa Bayoumi released the book How Does It Feel to Be a Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America.[21] The author says mass arrests and deportations of Arabs and Arab Americans were conducted by the various government organizations, including the FBI, often with insufficient evidence to connect them to terrorism; that some were incarcerated indefinitely without notifying the detainee’s relatives, as if they had just disappeared. Bayoumi maintains deportation of Arabs and Arab-Americans significantly increased following 9/11, often at short notice, saying in one case a man was deported without his clothes.
prescreened and advanced screened at different security checkpoints. This led to the major issue of racial profiling and invasion of privacy, as many Middle Eastern-looking people were singled out for further screening. Luggage screening was another main objective, as new technology was introduced to scan passengers’ luggage thoroughly and search for weapons or bombs. In addition, some pilots were required by the Department of Homeland Security to carry a firearm on board. Better known as a Federal flight deck officer, these pilots undergo training to prevent terrorist attacks or other potential dangers on an airplane. Another act was passed known as the USA Patriot Act, which broadened the powers of law enforcement for the purpose of identifying terrorist activity. For example, law enforcement were allowed able to break and enter one’s premises without a search warrant and without their consent, if they were suspected of terrorist activity. This also included roving wiretaps as a method of surveillance. For instance, the government was allowed to search through one’s record searches, and intelligence searches. Specifically, if one searched terrorism activities or showed unusual behavior and then deleted their history, the government was able to see that. The purpose of this act was to catch acts of terrorism before any attacks were planned and executed. A program called Total Information Awareness was developed to enhance technology that would collect and analyze information about every individual in the United States, and trace unusual behaviors that could help prevent terrorist activities. Information that was gathered through the program included internet activity, credit card purchase histories, airline ticket purchases, and medical records.
Hate crimes
Hate crimes against Muslims increased around the world. For example, Canada experienced a 16-fold increase in anti-Muslim attacks immediately a year after 9/11.[63] In the year leading to the attack, there were only 11 reported crimes but a year following 9/11, there were 173 hate crime cases reported.[63] The same also happened in the United Kingdom and Australia. In the latter’s case, a study conducted in Sydney and Melbourne revealed an overwhelming majority of Muslim residents who experienced racism or racist violence since the attack.[63] Another study claimed that hate crimes “increased for all Muslims after 9/11, although the relative risk was much higher for those individuals living in countries with smaller Muslim populations.” An increase in racial tensions was seen in countries such as England, with a number of violent crimes linked to the September 11th attacks.[65] The most severe example was seen in Peterborough, where teenager Ross Parker was murdered by a gang of up to ten Muslims of Pakistani background who had sought a white male to attack. www. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Aftermath_of_the_September_11_attacks planned and executed the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre on 9/11/2001 in New York and those who killed millions of Muslims in revenge and those who are still planning to destroy more Muslim countries be face the eternal wrath of almighty God soon. Turkey-US joint patrols ‘aim to keep Kurdish fighters away from border’
ANKARA: As part of their efforts to set up a “safe zone” east of the Euphrates River in Syria, Turkey and the US embarked on their first joint ground patrols on Sunday on the suggested site of the zone. The troops were backed by helicopters and reconnaissance drones. The patrol “maintained security within the area, and demonstrates our continued commitment to address Turkey’s legitimate security concerns,” said Col. Myles Caggins, spokesman for the international anti-Daesh coalition. The operation aims to keep the Syrian-Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) away from the border with Turkey, he added. But whether this will revive bilateral relations is uncertain because just after the patrol ended, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Washington of siding with “terrorists,” and warned that his country will implement its own “safe zone” if talks with the US stall. “It seems Turkey’s ally is after a safe zone in northern Syria not for Turkey, but for the terrorist group (the YPG). We reject such an approach,” Erdogan said on Sunday.
Mehmet Emin Cengiz, a research assistant at the Al-Sharq Forum in Istanbul, told Arab News that the first joint ground patrol is a good step regarding implementation of the “safe zone,” but “it was quite limited and is not enough to revive cooperation between Turkey and the US. Such a move alone can’t create a magical effect on bilateral relations.” On Aug. 7, Turkish and US military officials decided to establish a “safe zone” in northern Syria, and a peace corridor to help displaced Syrians return home. But “the language of the deal … was pretty vague,” said Cengiz. “We shouldn’t forget that the US continues its military help to the YPG.” Aaron Stein, Middle East program director at the US-based Foreign Policy Research Institute, said the joint patrols are better than the alternative: A Turkish military operation in the area. “But Erdogan has made clear repeatedly that these won’t be enough to satisfy the Turkish government,” Stein told Arab News. “The US has bought time, but nothing has been resolved and I don’t expect things to
get any better from here on out.” Joe Macaron, a fellow at the Arab Center in Washington, DC, said the objective of the preliminary USTurkish agreement in Syria is to manage the conflict of interest between both sides rather than resolve it. “As long as the US continues its support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (of which the YPG is the primary component), and Turkey remains in alliance with Russia, the revival of cooperation in Syria between Washington and Ankara isn’t feasible,” he told Arab News. Under Turkish pressure, the US has rushed to start joint patrols before agreeing on the depth of the “safe zone” and who controls it, he added. “Erdogan is criticizing the US administration and betting on his meeting with (US President Donald) Trump in New York this
Turkish newspaper publishes detailed transcript of Saudi hit squad in the final moments of journalist’s assassination. The Turkish Daily Sabah newspaper has released transcripts of audio recordings of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the Saudi hit squad that killed him inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last year. The recordings, obtained by Turkey’s national intelligence and made public by the newspaper on Monday, detailed the conversations between the Saudi writer and members of the 15-man hit squad moments before his assassination on October 2, 2018. Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor who was living in the United States, had gone to his country’s consulate to collect documents for his planned wedding before he was killed and his body dismembered. When he entered the consulate, Khashoggi
was greeted by a familiar face before being pulled by into a room, according to the Daily Sabah. “Please sit. We have to take you back [to Riyadh],” Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, a senior Saudi intelligence officer and the bodyguard of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, said. “There is an order from Interpol. Interpol demanded you be returned. We are here to take you,” Mutreb is quoted as saying.. Khashoggi responded: “There are no lawsuits against me. My fiancee is waiting outside for me.” In the last 10 minutes before he was killed, Mutreb asked Khashoggi to “leave a message for your son”, saying not to worry if he could not reach the journalist. When Khashoggi refused, Mutreb said: “Write it, Mister Jamal. Hurry up. Help us so we can help you, because in the end we
will take you back to Saudi Arabia and if you don’t help us you know what will happen eventually.” The operatives then drugged the Saudi journalist. His last words before losing consciousness were: “I have asthma. Do not do it, you will suffocate me.” Sound of an autopsy saw dismembering the 59-year-old’s body can be heard at 1.39pm local time. The procedure lasted 30 minutes. His body is yet to be recovered. Turkey has called Khashoggi’s killing “premeditated murder” orchestrated by the Saudi government. Saudi officials have countered that claim, insisting Khashoggi was killed in a “rogue operation”, after initially claiming he had left the building before vanishing. month to settle this issue, as both sides always aim to find a consensus rather than go to confrontation,” Macaron said. “Regardless of what might happen though, the safe zone is a temporary fix. These contentious issues they’re facing will remain pending moving forward.” Erdogan is expected to hold talks with Trump during the UN General Assembly meeting in late September to discuss several issues, including Syria. Association of Islamic Charitable Projects Celebrates Hijrah 1441-H
By: Imad Nouri The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects in British Columbia is always keen on bringing attention to the various Islamic occasions. This year the AICP was the first of all Muslim organizations to raise the flag of happiness, joy and honor with the coming of the New Hijri Year 1141. The AICP held its annual honoring celebration for coming of the New Hijri Year 1441 at Surrey Arts Centre on Saturday, August 31. The month of Muharram came and it brought with it another chance of a year full of obedience and piety. 1441 years from the time of that blessed Hijrah of the Prophet, sallallahu-^alayhi wa sallam, yet the glory and the effect of that migration still shines over and in every corner of the History since then. An occasion worth of every Muslim to celebrate and feel proud. That is exactly what the AICP seems to achieve. The AICP reminds the Muslims of their glorious occasions and history; to reflect and to gain some esteem from it. Another marvelous accomplishment for the AICP in particular and for the Muslim Community in the Lower Mainland in general. A great performance suitable for such a worthy occasion.
Recitation from the Blessed Qur’an started the celebration with a diverse attendance enjoyed and interacted with moving chants praising Allah ta^ala and His blessed Messenger Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. A speech by his Eminence Shaykh Abdur-Rahman Sulayman shed some light on learning and benefiting from that migration to gain the full confidence in the support of Allah, that is, his victory and the assistance for his fearful and faithful slave. Confidence that is not shaken by the storms of falsehood. Confidence that was clearly shown by those two migrants, when the non-believers reached the mouth of the cave, and when Abu Bakr said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, “If one of them looks down at his feet he will see us.” The Messenger of Allah then said his prominent statement, with which he captured the hearts “O Abu Bakr, what you think of two protected and supported by Allah”. As for what Allah said in the Glorious Qur’an in Surah at-Tawbah, Verse 40: Meaning of which is: “When you did not support him, Allah indeed supported him (Prophet Muhammad) when the blasphemers harassed him. He was the second of two (the Prophet and Abu
Bakr) while they were in the cave he said to his Companion: ‘Do not be sad Allah (with us) is protecting us.’” The words” Inallah ha Mahna” while the literal translation is (with us). The proper interpretation is that ‘Allah Protects us’, and does not mean the physical presence of Allah with them. a matter that is impossible to attribute to Allah as He is clear from any attribute of the creations. Allah protects, supports, aids, preserves, and guides his pious righteous obedient believing slaves. Those who fulfilled fully the orders of Allah, worshiping only Him clearing Him from resembling His creations and leaving all the prohibitions. This blessed migration with all its pearls of wisdom is worthy to revive in us today the sense of pride, dignity, esteem and all enabling factors, as it did that time. After all these years that have passed, the Muslims still read in the pages of this migration the lessons of glory and sacrifice. Sacrifice for the religion and the acceptance of Allah. They take heed with their mentor, the Prophet who emigrated not for money nor a worldly gain or out of cowardice; rather he emigrated to spread the religion and uphold the word of Tawhid ‘no one deserves to
be worshiped but Allah’. The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (AICP) wishes the Muslim Community in the Lower Mainland and those all over the world a thriving and flourishing New Year, one that would be filled with security, peace and protection from injustice. The AICP Centers are always open and welcome anyone and everyone wishing to acquire the knowledge about our splendid Religion, Islam. May Allah guide us all to strong commitment to piety, righteousness, learning and implementing our religious duties, by the virtue of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam.

Bangladesh court rules women need not say if they are virgins on marriage forms
B
angladesh‘s top court has ruled that women need no longer declare if they are virgins on marriage certificates after a five-year legal battle by women’s rights groups trying to protect women’s privacy and prevent potential humiliation. Marriage laws in the Muslim-majority country in South Asia had required a bride to state on her marriage certificate if she was a “kumari” — meaning virgin — a widow or divorced. But the nation’s High Court on Sunday ordered the government to remove the word “kumari” and replace it with “unmarried,” a move welcomed on Tuesday by women’s rights groups. According to the ruling, the groom would now also have
to disclose if he was unmarried, divorced or a widower. No one from the government was available to comment about the change or when it was to take effect. Ainun Nahar Siddiqua, one of two lawyers involved in the case, said the case dated back to 2014 with the filing of a writ petition to change the form provided under the 1974 Bangladesh Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act. “It’s a ruling that gives us the belief that we can fight and create more changes for women in the future,” Siddiqua, of Bangladesh Legal Aid And Services Trust (BLAST), told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
“We filed a writ petition because asking whether someone’s a virgin or not is against the person’s right to privacy.” Mohammad Ali Akbar Sarker, a Muslim marriage registrar from Dhaka, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation that registrars like him were waiting for the Ministry of Law and Justice to officially inform them about the changes in the form. “I have conducted many marriages in Dhaka and I have often been asked why men have the liberty to not disclose their status but women don’t. I always told them this wasn’t in my hands. I guess I won’t be asked that question anymore,” said Sarker. Source: https://globalnews.ca
Realizing the Importance of Letting Go
T
here are many people who believe holding on to things or relationships are signs of great strength and rise them above others but there are many times when it takes more courage to know that its time to let go, and then doing it. Letting go is one of the most important skills we can learn in order to be happy in the one lifetime we get. It is an important lesson to relieve ourselves of unhealthy habits, relationships, connection to events, ideas, or simple pet peeves that come in the way of our life. Like they say; yesterday is
gone, tomorrow is yet to come, and all we have is today. Every day is truly precious and there is no better time than today to let go of negative thoughts, ideas, and other influences so that you can have a better present and future. The unpleasant things we hold on to take up precious real estate in our mind and heart. We focus and ferment on things that continue to cause us distress. By letting go, we give up the resistance and make more space for life-changing moments that would have otherwise never happened because there was no space in your life for them. To simplify: accept what is and let go of what was.
memories and thoughts that cause us pain and discomfort and lack any lesson that we can focus on. If you’re holding onto something and find it hard to let go, take inventory of those thoughts. We have such a short amount of life and so much to accomplish, maybe there are some things that are just meant to experience for a brief moment and not to stay as a prick in our minds. Personal growth and change can be uncomfortable but nothing is more painful than being stuck in the past, where you no longer belong. Our future hopes and happiness should never be defined by our fears of the future which only exists in our minds. It is a joy to What Was? follow our hearts, and a massive tragedy to Before anyone continues on this path, we let a hologram of fears to stop us. must determine what is worth holding on to What is? from our past and let go of what was once There is no perfect moment to make posia pleasant influence but has changed into tive changes in our life. The only meson is something else. As we grow older, most to stop expecting life to be perfect. To be of us know what memories are important the best we can be, we must no longer hold to hold on to. First step is to identify the ourselves down with things that are out of

One man was climbing a tree when suddenly he slipped. He grabbed a branch and was hanging there. After an hour or so passed, he was feeling
our control. We have to be grown and matured enough to appreciate our experiences and hold on to the lessons we have learned. We have to simplify our lives, share the love we have today, embody our most caring and compassionate nature, and communicate honestly and truthfully. What is flourishes when we stop focusing on how unlucky we are, how life and its participants have wronged us, and remind ourselves about how blessed we are. There is always a way something can be worse, and it would be shame we cannot be grateful for our present. “Yesterday is already a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision, but today, well-lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope.”

Occasional Naps Do a Heart Good, Swiss Study Finds
By Dennis Thompson HealthDay Reporter
A new study reports the occasional nap appears to cut in half people’s risk of heart attack, strokes and heart disease, compared with folks who never nap. But more frequent napping provided no benefit, researchers found.”In fact, we found that frequent nappers had initially a higher risk for incident cardiovascular disease,” said lead author Nadine Hausler, a postdoctoral researcher
at University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland. “However, when we took sociodemographic, lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors into account, this increased risk disappeared.” The findings left experts scratching their heads. “I don’t think it’s anything definitive, in terms of whether napping is actually helpful or not helpful,” said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, director of the sleep program at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. She noted that the health

benefits of napping are a source of intense debate among researchers, with many arguing that naps are a sign of lousy nighttime sleep and, therefore, not a good thing.” This throws a little bit of a curveball, because they found one to two naps per week might be beneficial,” St-Onge said. For this study, researchers looked at napping patterns of nearly 3,500 randomly selected people in Switzerland, and then tracked their heart health for more than five years. About three in five said they don’t nap. One in five said they nap once or twice a week -- the same number who reported napping three or more days a week.Frequent nappers tended to be older men with excess weight and a tobacco habit. Though they reported sleeping longer at night than those who don’t nap, they also reported more daytime sleepiness and were more likely to have sleep apnea, a condition that wakes a person repeatedly in the night when their breathing stops. During the five-year follow-up, participants had 155 fatal and non-fatal heart events, the findings showed. These could include heart attacks, strokes and heart disease caused by clogged arteries that required
surgical reopening. Napping once or twice a week cut a person’s risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure by 48%, compared with people who don’t nap at all, the researchers found. Frequent naps initially appeared to increase a person’s heart risk by 67%, but that disappeared after accounting for other risk factors, the study authors noted. Dr. Martha Gulati, a cardiologist who is editor-in-chief of CardioSmart.org, the American College of Cardiology’s patient website, said it makes sense that frequent napping could be a red flag for health problems”The mechanisms are not straightforward,” she said. “We assume that occasional napping might be a result of a physiological compensation allowing to decrease the stress due to insufficient nocturnal sleep and, thus, could have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease events.” Though she said the results should first be confirmed by other studies, Hausler added: “We can say that an occasional nap can potentially decrease cardiovascular disease risk for healthy adults.” The study was published online Sept. 9 in the journal Heart.

Bianca vs. Serena: The stakes are high for both women at the U.S. Open It seems like everyone in Canada is suddenly a tennis fan Remember those jitters you felt before the first day of school earlier this week? OK, now multiply that by, like, a thousand. That will give you an idea of how Bianca Andreescu is probably feeling right now, as she prepares for the biggest tennis match of her life. On Saturday, the 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., will represent Canada at the U.S. Open tennis finals in New York — one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the year. What’s so remarkable about this young woman is that a year ago, most Canadians had never heard of her, something the rising tennis star admits is wild. “If someone had told me a year ago I’d be in the U.S. Open final, I’d say you’re crazy,” she said after winning in the semifinals on Thursday night. Last year, Andreescu didn’t even qualify to play in the annual tournament. On the opposite side of the court will be a veteran of the tennis and sports stage.
Serena Williams has been a household name for years. Her record is stellar. It’s the 10th time she’ll play in the U.S. Open final, not to mention that if she wins, it would be her 24th major win. Williams’ tone is slightly different than her opponent’s.At a press conference after her semifinal win, she was asked about making it to the finals. “I don’t really expect too much less,” said the 37-year-old. Williams has her own clothing line and a duchess cheering her on. That’s right, Meghan Markle is a fan of Williams, and is rumoured to have jumped on a plane to New York to catch the finals match this weekend. (CBC Kids News has not confirmed this.) Is this déjà vu? It won’t be the first time the two women play each other in a tournament final.Last month, Andreescu beat Williams in the Rogers Cup in Toronto after the veteran pulled out due to an injury after only 16 minutes. When Williams announced she was pulling out, Andreescu rushed to her side to console
her. The sincere move prompted Williams to describe her opponent an “old soul.” Both women want to win Don’t expect too much friendliness on the court on Saturday. There’s a lot at stake here. If Andreescu beats Williams, she will be the first Canadian to win the U.S. Open. She already made history by being the first Canadian to reach the finals. Canadians all over are jumping on the tennis bandwagon and cheering her on. On the other hand, Williams has her own motivation to win. If she defeats Andreescu, she will tie a re-
cord and become the second woman to win 24 Grand Slam titles. There’s more to it than just bragging rights The victor will also be a lot richer. The prize money for the winner of the U.S. Open is more than $5 million Cdn. The runner-up’s winnings aren’t too shabby, either: $2.5 million. Regardless of who you’re cheering for, the match is likely to be a nail-biter. Source: CBC Kids News
Misbah-ul-Haq: Former Pakistan captain named new coach and chief selector Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq has been appointed Pakistan’s new head coach and chief selector. The 45-year-old fills the role vacated by Mickey Arthur, whose contract was not renewed after they failed to reach the World Cup semi-finals. Former skipper and paceman Waqar Younis is the new bowling coach. “I know expectations are high, but I am absolutely ready and up for the
task,” said Misbah, who scored 5,222 runs in 75 Tests at an average of 46.6. “We have some of the most talented and exciting cricketers, and I will like to help them train and prepare in such a way that they can play intelligently, smartly and fearlessly. ”I am aware this will require a change in the dressing room culture but if we have to compete consistently at the highest level, we have to embrace
these modern day requirements.” A Pakistan Cricket Board committee also interviewed former Australian batsman Dean Jones and former Pakistan coach Mohsin Khan before awarding Misbah a three-year deal. Misbah and Waqar will start with three one-day internationals and three Twenty20s at home to Sri Lanka from 27 September. Source:www.geosuper.tv/
With great salary comes great responsibility for Waqar Younis
Pakistan cricket team’s new bowling coach Waqar Younis will be paid Rs2 million a month for coaching the national team as well as unearthing and honing new talent, Daily Jang reported on Friday. The legendary pacer, who has been settled in Sydney for the last few years but will
soon relocate to Lahore with his family, has been handed a pay package that is not far off from the figures offered to Misbahul-Haq — the new head coach and chief selector. However, in return of monthly remuneration of Rs20 lacs, Younis will have to do more than just coach the national
team’s bowlers, according to the Urdu daily’s sources. Younis will reportedly also attend domestic matches and identify new talent before working with them at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. Source:www.geosuper.tv/

Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah Dec 25,1876- Sep 11,1948
“Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.” — Stanley Wolpert Birth to Death of Quaid e Azam akistan, one of the largest Muslim states in the world, is a living and exemplary monument of Quaid-iAzam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. With his untiring efforts, indomitable will, and dauntless courage, he united the Indian Muslims under the banner of the Muslim League and carved out a homeland for them, despite stiff opposition from the Hindu Congress and the British Government. Muhammad Ali Jinnah was born in Karachi on December 25, 1876. His father Jinnah Poonja was an Ismaili Khoja of Kathiawar, a prosperous business community. Muham
mad Ali received his early education at the Sindh Madrasa and later at the Mission School, Karachi. He went to England for further studies in 1892 at the age of 16. In 1896, Jinnah qualified for the Bar and was called to the Bar in 1897. Muhammad Ali Jinnah started his political career in 1906 when he attended the Calcutta session of the All India National Congress in the capacity of Private Secretary to the President of the Congress. In 1910, he was elected to the Imperial Legislative Council. He sponsored the Waqf Validating Bill, which brought him in touch with other Muslim
P
leaders. In March 1913, Jinnah joined the All India Muslim League. As a member of the Muslim League, Jinnah began to work for Hindu-Muslim unity. In 1917, the annual sessions of both the Congress and the League were held at
Lucknow. The League session was presided over by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It marked the culmination of his efforts towards Hindu-Muslim unity. Here, both the League and the Congress adopted a scheme of reforms known as the Lucknow Pact. On April 19, 1918, Jinnah married Rutanbai. Their daughter, Dina was born a year later. In 1919, Jinnah resigned from his membership of the Imperial Legislative Council as protest against the “Rowlatt Act”. Until the publication of Nehru Report, Jinnah continued his efforts for Hindu-Muslim unity. The Nehru Report, published in 1928, was severely criticized by all sections of the Muslim community. In December 1928, the National Convention was called to consider the Report. Jinnah proposed some amendments, but they were all rejected. He finally parted ways with the Congress. In 1929, Jinnah presented his famous Fourteen Points in response to the Nehru Report. When he returned from England, he reorganized the Muslim League. In 1934, he was elected as its permanent president. The Provincial Assembly elections of 1937 swept the Congress to power in eight provinces. After almost two years of oppressive rule, Muslims under the leadership of Jinnah, celebrated the Day of Deliverance at the end of Congress rule. The Muslim League held its annual session at Lahore in March 1940. This was presided over by Quaid-i-Azam. The demand for Pakistan was formally put forward here. This goal was realized on August 14, 1947. Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was appointed as its first Governor General. The establishment of Pakistan brought even greater responsibili-
ties for Jinnah. The refugee problem, the withholding of Pakistani assets by India, and the Kashmir problem were a real test for the Quaid. However, his indomitable will prevailed. He worked out a sound economic policy, established an independent currency and the State Bank for Pakistan. He chose Karachi as the federal capital. However, he did not live long to witness the progress of the state that he had founded. On September 11, 1948, he died after a protracted illness at Karachi. He was buried in Karachi that witnessed the entire nation mourning over an irreparable loss.
