Earthquake Crisis
HE earthquake in northern Punjab and parts of Azad Kashmir has brought with it bitter memories from the 2005 catastrophe that claimed almost 75,000 lives. So far, some 40 people have been reported dead in Tuesday’s quake while over 500 have been injured. Cellular network services remained suspended in many places, preventing a more accurate assessment. While rescue efforts this time were quicker and better than before — perhaps owing to the smaller scale of destruction — the loss of life could have been averted had the authorities put to use the lessons learnt from the 2005 tremor. The statement given by the National Disaster Management Authority chairman shortly after the quake speaks volumes for the state’s
apathy when disaster strikes. Responding to a question, the NDMA chairman said aftershocks could not be ruled out, but the situation was ‘nothing serious’ since there were several fault lines in the country. Considering that the affected area of New Mirpur lies on the active Samwal-Jharik Kass fault line, which, experts say, was also activated in the 2005 earthquake, this statement is simply absurd and insensitive, and the people who lost their homes and loved ones would disagree with it. The quake was the second major one to have hit the area — that lies in seismic zone 4 (the most at risk) — in two decades. The devastation of the 2005 earthquake should have made a deep impact on how the government views and deals with natural disasters, but unfortunately, we do not seem to be any

He was raised by the Creator as the Mercy and blessings to humanity, to re-introduce the Light of GOD and to revive the original most important infallible-precept commandment as enunciated in the Books of GOD: “Worship ME alone and obey MY Messenger”. “And if you have a dispute in any matter refer it to Allah and the Messenger if you are believers in Allah and the Last Day”. (Quran). wiser. The fact that an earthquake preparedness strategy approved by the Planning Commission in 2007 has been lying in cold storage is evidence of this lackadaisical approach. In terms of geographical location, Pakistan is more prone than many other countries to natural disasters, the incidence of which has drastically increased owing to global warming. According to a report by the disaster management authority in KP, all 26 districts of the province are now vulnerable to natural calamities because of the increased frequency of extreme weather events (in addition to seismic activity in the region) as compared to only 13 districts a decade ago. This is also true for the rest of the country that now wit-
nesses torrential rains, floods and droughts on a routine basis. Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, with all its urban perils including substandard construction, also lies in a zone of ‘noticeable’ seismic danger, according to the Geological Survey of Pakistan. Many areas are so densely populated that only a mild tremor would be enough to incur large-scale loss of lives. Regrettably, our collective approach towards disaster management leaves much to be desired. It is time the government moved on from ‘first-aid rescue’ — the shortterm provision of tents, medicines and food to the affected — to developing and then implementing a comprehensive and sustainable policy to counter disaster and deal effectively with its aftermath. Death toll rises to 37 in PoK earthquake, as families bury loved one commissioner
The death toll from an earthquake that struck Pakistani Kashmir jumped to 37, officials said on Wednesday, as families mourned relatives and rescue teams sent supplies to the area. Officials said the extent of the casualties, who included young children, emerged a day after the 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck as authorities were able to reach towns and villages around the region outside main population centres. “We had dispatched survey teams in the entire area affected by the earthquake to collect details of the victims,” Muhammad Tayyab, divisional
for Mirpur, one of the worst affected areas, told Reuters, adding that around 500 people had been injured. Tuesday’s earthquake levelled homes and shops and split open roads in an area between the towns of Jhelum and Mirpur to the north, part of which is in Pakistan’s portion of the disputed territory of Kashmir. ”The situation is slowly returning to normal, the level of panic is now less among the people, although an aftershock was felt at night,” said Sardar Gulfaraz Khan, a police deputy inspector general. Salim Notary ‘Religion has nothing to do with terrorism,’ says PM Imran at UN conference on hate speech Notary Public
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday emphasised that religion has no link to terrorism and that it is “marginalisation of communities [that] leads to radicalisation”. Pakistan and Turkey co-hosted a round table discussion on hate speech, a side event in the margins of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The prime minister along with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, addressed the conference, which also featured a Key Note address by High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC) Miguel Ángel Moratinos. In his remarks, the premier noted the growing amount of “discrimination and violence based on religion and belief ”, a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office said. To this end, he called upon the need for addressing “both the drivers and consequences of these phenomena”. PM Imran also cautioned against the denigration of revered personalities under the guise of “freedom of expression and opinion”.“The world must understand Muslim sensitivi-

He underscored the need for effective measures to be put in place so that hate speech, especially that which stems from Islamophobia, can be countered. ”Marginalisation of any community leads to radicalisation,” the PMO statement quoted the premier as saying.

PPP and JUI-F agree on sending government home, opposition leaders say after meeting
Leaders of the PPP and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) on Wednesday said that there are no differences between their parties on sending the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government packing, but that the method
of accomplishing that objective is still open to discussion. The resolve came after JUI-F leader and convener of the opposition’s Rahbar Committee Akram Durrani called on PPP leaders Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and Sherry Rehman at the latter’s office in the parliament. The meeting was a part of JUI-F’s efforts to get the PPP on board for its anti-government long march which is scheduled for next month. The PPP leadership has previously announced it will not join the march but promised to provide “moral and political support” to the JUI-F. Speaking to reporters following their meeting, Durrani said
leaders of the two parties had “good” discussions. He said the JUI-F and PPP had reached complete consensus on one idea: “We have to send this government home. We have to send this prime minister home.”However, he said talks on how to remove the government would continue and they would take discussions from today’s meeting to their respective leaderships for further consultation. Bukhari also said the two parties were united on the idea of sending the government home. “It is very important to get rid of this incapable government,” he said, adding that discussions on the modalities would continue. He said a multi-party conference

Maryam Nawaz, Yousuf Abbas sent to jail on 14-day judicial remand by Lahore court An accountability court in Lahore on Wednesday rejected the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) request for an extension in the physical remand of PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz and her cousin Yousuf Abbas and ordered that the duo be sent on judicial remand for 14 days. During the court proceedings, heard by judge Ameer Muhammad Khan, NAB prosecutors Hafiz Asadullah Awan and Haris Qureshi presented their arguments. They said further investigation of the two was required in the
Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) case. On August 8, Maryam and her cousin had been arrested by NAB in the CSM case. Since then, their physical remand has been repeatedly extended. During today’s proceedings, the NAB prosecutor said that during the investigation of the two they had found out about an agreement for the division of the family’s assets. He said shares valued at Rs14.558 million were divided between former premier Nawaz Sharif, Leader of the Opposition in
the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif, Abbas Sharif, Kausar and Shamim Begum. During the investigation, a difference of shares worth Rs11.61m was identified. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) record for 2008, shares valued at Rs26.2 million belonged to the CSM, the prosecutor said, adding that the shares were not included in the Sharif family’s assets. Trump complains again of harassment Two Muslim men say American Airlines cancelled their flight to after impeachment probe launched DFW because crew ‘didn’t feel comfortable’ flying with them
Donald Trump described himself on Wednesday as the worst-treated president ever after Democrats announced a formal impeachment inquiry against him. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in announcing the probe on Tuesday afternoon that Trump had betrayed his oath of office by seeking help from Ukraine to hurt his Democratic rival Joe Biden. In the latest of a blast of tweets in response to that bombshell announcement, Trump said: “There has been no President in the history of our Country who has been treated so badly as I have. “The Democrats are frozen with hatred and fear. They get nothing done. This should never be allowed to happen to another President. Witch Hunt!,” Trump tweeted. The dramatic move marked the first step in a complex process that stands little chance of driving Trump from office. And it pushed US politics into a perilous new chapter 14 months before new elections for control of the White House and Congress.
Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives, and other Democratic Party leaders had resisted taking the step for months, preferring to focus on the coming election fight. But a combination of the most recent allegations that Trump offered Ukraine aid in return for help to damage Democratic White House frontrunner Biden, and a groundswell of support for impeachment among the party’s rank and file, appeared to tip the balance. ‘Airports are a scary place for Muslims,’ says D-FW imam. Two Dallas-area Muslim men say their American Airlines flight was canceled because the crew “didn’t feel comfortable” after they waved to one another boarding a flight from Birmingham to DFW International Airport. When they got off, they said they were trailed by law enforcement officers, interviewed by an FBI agent and had their bags searched again by TSA during their trip Saturday. Abderraoof Alkhawaldeh, a Muslim motivational speaker from Irving, and Dallas nonprofit leader Issam Abdallah said it was a blatant act of racial profiling and they have filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation against Fort Worth-based American. They said they want to talk with the airline’s leaders about their treatment and what they say is an increasing number of cases of discrimination
Egypt detains more than 1,000 after anti-Sisi protests: NGOs
Egyptian authorities have arrested more than 1,000 people, rights groups said on Wednesday, broadening a crackdown that has seen prominent critics detained after rare protests calling for the ouster of general-turned-President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The wave of arrests comes ahead of a “million-man march” on Friday called for by an exiled businessman whose online videos accusing Sisi and the military of corruption sparked last week’s rallies. The Egyptian Centre for Freedoms and Rights (ECRF) said 1,003 had been detained since the scattered demonstrations erupted last Friday in Cairo and other cities across the country. The Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights reported 1,298 arrested. The high profile dissidents detained include Khaled Dawoud, a former leader of the liberal Al-Dostour party who appeared in front of state prosecutors on Wednesday, his lawyers confirmed. He was charged with disseminating fake news and joining a terror group, and
was remanded in custody for 15 days, they added. Dawoud will be tried as part of the same case as award-winning human rights lawyer Mahienour El-Massry and veteran labour union activist Kamal Khalil, both of whom were arrested over the past week, the lawyers said. A well-known politician and journalist, Dawoud is a senior member of a broad coalition of leftist and liberal opposition parties that called on Tuesday for a “national dialogue” with authorities. The alliance, known as the Civil Democratic Movement, urged authorities to release all those arrested since the sporadic protests broke out. Source: dawn.com
British MPs to return to work as Johnson faces calls to resign
British parliamentarians will return to work on Wednesday after the nation’s highest court decreed on Tuesday that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s controversial five-week suspension of Parliament was unlawful. In a unanimous verdict, the 11 justices at the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court ruled that Parliament had effectively not been prorogued, upholding the decision by the Scottish court of appeal in Edinburgh on September 11, and paving the way for the House of Commons to resume at 11:30am (10:30 GMT) on Wednesday. “The decision to advise Her Majesty to prorogue Parliament was unlawful because it had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of Parliament to carry out its con-
stitutional functions without reasonable justification,” said the Supreme Court’s president, Lady Brenda Hale. Johnson had maintained that his move two weeks ago was to prepare for his scheduled queen’s speech on October 14 - a highly ceremonial occasion in which the British monarch outlines the government’s legislative programme. Led by pro-European Union advocates, including Scottish National Party (SNP) MP Joanna Cherry and high-profile activist Gina Miller, the petitioners against Johnson’s move argued his motives were based on a duplicitous desire to limit parliamentary scrutiny in the face of Britain’s planned withdrawal from the EU on October 31. “This is a historic court ruling,” a delighted Labour MP Paul Sweeney, one of the 70 politicians who had put their name to a legal challenge against prorogation, told Al Jazeera. “The prime minister should resign.” Professor Tim Bale of the Queen Mary University of London said the verdict was “about as bad as it could possibly be for the government”. “To have been judged to have acted unlawfully in their advice to the queen is not a good look,” said Bale. He also stressed that the unanimity of the
against Arabs and Muslims. “It was the most humiliating day of my life,” Abdallah said, speaking Thursday at the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. American Airlines said the flight was operated by Mesa Airlines, its Phoenix-based regional carrier. American spokeswoman LaKesha Brown said the flight was canceled as a result of “concerns raised by a crew member and a passenger.” “American and all of its regional partners have an obligation to take safety and security concerns raised by crew members and passengers seriously,” she said in a statement. “All customers on Flight 5886 were rebooked on the next flight to DFW. We’re committed to providing a positive experience to everyone who travels with us. Our team is working with Mesa to review this incident.” Brown said the airline has reached out to Alkhawaldeh and Abdallah to “better understand their experience.” Mesa is independently owned and flies regional jets under the American Eagle flag for American Airlines and United Express. “The safety and security of our customers is our top priority, and we are conducting a thorough investigation of this matter,” Mesa spokesman Jack Heller said Thursday. American has been under fire during the last two years for alleged hostilities toward racial minorities. The NAACP issued a travel advisory in October 2017 for American Airlines after a string of incidents in which black passengers ruling “makes it even more problematic [for the government] because there is no way that they can suggest that it was only the [opinion] of some judges”. Britain’s decision to leave the EU has been fraught with difficulties ever since the June 2016 referendum saw 52 percent of voters opt to leave the European bloc. Johnson, currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, is the third UK Conservative Party leader to assume the premiership in the Brexit era after the resignations of David Cameron in June
said they were discriminated against on flights. In June, a Miami doctor said he was removed from an American flight for his Arab and Muslim appearance and for using a phone during takeoff. He is suing the airline in federal court. That same month, a black doctor and founder of a telemedicine service said an American Airlines crew called her romper inappropriate and told her to cover up or risk being kicked off her flight coming home from vacation to Jamaica. Imam Omar Suleiman of Dallas said instances of racial profiling of Muslims are increasing, particularly at airports and on planes. “Airports are a scary place for Muslims,” said Suleiman, who founded the Yaqueen Institute for Islamic Research in Dallas. “Especially with the rhetoric of the president.” The men, who know each other from the local Muslim community, said they were traveling separately to a charity meeting in Birmingham. They were sitting in separate sections and waved to one another while boarding. During a flight delay because of maintenance issues, Abdallah said he got up to use the restroom, and when he came out a flight attendant was standing unusually close to the restroom door. The crew soon announced that the flight was canceled. Alkhawaldeh said he overheard a crew member saying it was canceled for security reasons. When they got off the plane, law enforcement officials were waiting for them. After some initial questioning, the men said they were let go but then tailed by a number of uniformed officers to a coffee shop and other areas. After a few minutes, both men said they were again approached by law enforcement and taken into a private interrogation. They had their bags searched again by TSA officers. Alkhawaldeh and Abdallah said while being interviewed by law officers, they were each told the flight was canceled because the crew didn’t feel comfortable flying with the two men. The fact that Abdallah flushed the toilet twice while using the airplane restroom also caused suspicion, Abdallah said he was told. They were booked on a later flight along with many of the same passengers who saw them approached by law enforcement officials as the plane was emptied. Alkhawaldeh said he flies with American often and is an AAdvantage Executive Platinum member, the company’s highest frequent flier ranking. “This is absurd, unacceptable and un-American,” Alkhawaldeh said. Source: www.dallasnews.com/ 2016 and Theresa May earlier this year. Opposition politicians, including Scotland’s SNP first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, have called on him to step down as well. For many pro-Brexit campaigners, however, the Supreme Court’s decision is a major distraction from the job of delivering on the three-year-old result. “British Conservatism as any kind of force is being destroyed internally by the vandals who have seized control of the castle,” he told Al Jazeera. FAITH It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They used to think that ‘umrah during the months of Hajj was one of the worst evils on earth. They would make Muharram Safar and say: They would say: when the backs of the camels have healed and the tracks of the pilgrims have become erased and Safar is over, ‘Umrah becomes permissible for those who want to do ‘Umrah.Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1489) and Muslim (1240)
M
uslims are supposed to work together towards a common goal set by the Quran and shown by the Prophet (PBUH). They are brothers and sisters because they are bonded by the common ideology of the unity of God and the unity of humankind. The Believers are but a single Brotherhood [Yusuf Ali] This is the foundation of Islam. The Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) require Muslims to work for the unity of the Ummah. The Quran is very clear about it: And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah (i.e. this Quran), and be not divided among yourselves. [Hilali & Khan] As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: their affair is with God. He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did. (6:159) [Yusuf Ali And be not ye among Mushrikeen (those who join gods with God), - i.e., those who split up their Religion, and become Sects, - each party rejoicing in that which is with itself! (30:31-32) [Yusuf Ali] Muslims are required to be merciful towards each other (48:29) and be like the body where if any part hurts the whole body should feel the pain (Hadith). But, are we Muslims practicing this injunction of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH)? Muslims and various Islamic organizations are working hard but it is frustratingly obvious that the above goals are ever so elusive. Instead of Muslims being united in mercy towards each other, they are, on the whole, far from it. Instead of feeling the pain and misery of Muslims suffering all kinds of oppression and tyranny, most of us are happily enjoying our material comforts of life. Every day that passes brings more death and destruction to Muslims, only at a much wider scale. It is sad to see Muslim governments collaborating with non-Muslims to inflict damage and suffering against fellow Muslims. Many Muslim groups are also engaged in fighting against each other in many parts of the Muslim world. And in some countries where Muslims are in minority, their condition is even worse. As a minority they are systematically being subjected to discrimination, humiliation, persecution, torture, and rape. One wonders: is it ever going to end? When Greeks attacked Turkey in 1921 (at the behest of the British) Iqbal’s heart started crying. He knew that it was not just an attack on Turkey, but it was an attack on Islam itself. He tried to free the Muslim mind from the prevailing colonial mentality and from Muslims’ own narrow self-interests. He wrote the poem “Tolu-e-Islam” which later became one of his classic works. [Copies of this poem were sold and all proceeds were sent to Turkey.] He said: “Hawas ne tukre tukre kar diya hay na’u-e insan ko Ukhuwwat ka bayan ho ja mohabbat ki zaban ho ja Ye Hindi, wo Khurasani, ye Afghani, wo Turani Tu ay sharmindayeh sahil uchhal kar bekaraan ho ja” “Greed has torn apart humankind. You (Muslims), become role models of love and brotherhood. Get beyond the narrow boundaries of nationalities (like Indian, Khurasani, Afghani, and Turkish) and jump into the limitless ocean (of Islam).”
The Quran and Muslim Unity
Observing the present situation in which Muslims find themselves today, Iqbal’s soul must be feeling extremely restless. Alas! There is no Iqbal today among Muslims who can guide the Muslim Ummah against the forces of evil that are bent on its destruction. But the Muslim Ummah can also be torn apart due to internal conflicts. In fact, this is what is happening to Muslim Ummah today. Probably, there are no people in the world today who are as divided as Muslims. They are divided along religious, political, ethnic, cultural, racial, linguistic, and sectarian lines. These divisions extend further into subdivisions. Status, wealth, fame, and fortune have also created social differences among Muslims. Muslims are divided at the root into Sunnis and Shias. Sunnis are further divided into Hanafi, Maliki, Shaafai, and Hanbali. Shias too are divided into Kesania, Zaidia, Imamia or Ithna ‘Ashari, Ismalia, etc. Sunnis are also divided into Ahle-hadith and Ahlefiqha. In the Indian subcontinent (at least) Ahle-fiqha are further divided into Deobandis and Barelwis. Similar differences exist in other places as well. Are all these divisions and differences schools of thought as many Muslims claim? Whether or not we admit it, these differences and divisions do create physical, emotional, and psychological barriers amongst us. Iqbal says that these differences create prejudice in humans: “Shajar hay firqa arayee, ta’assub hay samar iska Ye wo phal hay jo jannat se nikalwata hay adam ko” “These divisions are the branches of a sectarian tree; its fruit is prejudice. This is the fruit which gets Adam (man) expelled from Jannah (peaceful life).” Although in North America we do try to work together (despite our religious differences) in a civilized manner, but our brothers and sisters back home are not that fortunate. There, these differences sometimes lead to violence and killings. Why is that despite clear warnings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) against it? Is it due to the prejudices that are the inevitable results of our divisions, as Iqbal mentions in the above poem? With all these divisions and differences, can we progress in the world? Iqbal does not think so: “Firqa bandi hay kaheen aur kaheen zatein hain Kya zamane mein panapne ki yahee batein hain” “Somewhere are religious divisions and somewhere are differences based on caste. Is this the way to prosper in the world?” He further says: “Tum syed bhi ho Mirza bhi ho Afghan bhi ho Tum sabhi kuchh ho batao ki musalman bhi ho” “You are Syed; you are Mirza; you are Afghan. You are everything. Tell me, are you Muslim too?” Here Iqbal uses the word “Syed” to represent the caste system that has penetrated Mus-
lims (especially in the Indian subcontinent because of Hindu influence). He uses the word “Mirza” to represent the ruling elite and the word “Afghan” to represent the differences in Muslims based on region, language, and race. All these differences are anti-Qur’anic. When Iqbal poses the question, “Tell me, are you Muslim too?” he implies that those who feel proud and superior compared to other fellow Muslims because of these labels attached to their names (and not because of Taqwa), they are not entitled to be called true Muslims. Qur’an says that those who create differences in the Deen (Islam) are among the Mushrikun: “Be not among the Mushrikun i.e., those who create differences in Deen (Isalm) and become sects. Each (sectarian) party quite content with itself (that it is following the correct path).” (30:32) “And those who create division in Deen (Islam) and become divided into sects, O Prophet (PBUH)! You have no part in them in the least.” (6:159) The Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said: “Anyone who gets even one feet away from the Ummah has taken out the Islamic yoke from his neck, even if he prays and fasts.” That is why Qur’an calls upon all Muslims to be united and hold on steadfastly to the rope of Allah (i.e. Qur’an) and gives a stern warning to them not to create any divisions
(3:103) amongst themselves. If we look at the global picture as a whole, we find that the number of Muslims has grown steadily to more than 1.6 billion today. Muslims possess the richest resources of the world and the most fertile lands of the earth. In spite of this, how ironic that the most vulnerable and the most dependent people on earth are also Muslims. Coming to the religious level, we find that the number of mosques is growing everywhere. The number of Muslims going to mosques is also increasing. The number of Muslims performing the annual pilgrimage increases every year, and in fact, has to be controlled to restrict the number. The number of Muslim organizations has been growing steadily. Whenever some differences arise among Muslims in one organization, they create another one and build another mosque. Noticing such an abundance of religious fervor among Muslims, Iqbal was led to say: “Masjid to banadi shab bhar mein imaan ke hararat walon ne Mun apna purana papi hay barson mein namazi ban na saka” “Those with fervor in their faith built the mosque in one night, but the heart is sinful and did not prostrate in years.” In spite of all the speeches and the sermons exhorting Muslims to unite, we see that the result is disappointing, to say the least. Why is that? The only way to diagnose this problem is to find the root cause according to Iqbal. Qur’an says: “O mankind! There has come to you a guidance from your Lord and a cure for the disease in your hearts.” (10:57) Thus according to Qur’an, the disease of all our problems lies in our hearts and therefore, the cure should also begin there. Iqbal says: “Zaban se kah bhi diya la ilaha illah to kya hasil Dil-o-nigah Musalman naheen to kuchh bhi naheen” “What can you accomplish by saying “la ilaha” with your tongue? If your heart is not

Conservatives take lead in Canada election: polls Election 2019: Trudeau turns to Conservatives led by rookie Andrew Scheer Surrey to keep red tide alive edged into the lead against beleaguered Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals, which shed support to smaller leftist rivals less than a month from Canada’s general election, according to polls Tuesday. The two parties had been neck and neck at the start of the campaign. But new polling taken since Friday by Ipsos, Angus Reid and Ekos -- after several images emerged of Trudeau in blackface makeup -put the Tories three to five points ahead of the Liberals. Each survey had a 2.5 to 2.9 percent margin of error. “The question was not whether damning revelations that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had participated in the demeaning act of blackface (not once, but on at least three occasions) would hurt Liberal re-election prospects in this election campaign, but how much?” said Angus Reid in a statement. The polling firm noted that the incumbent Liberals yielded support among younger voters -- a key demographic that helped him sweep to power in 2015 -- to the fourth-placed
This was Trudeau’s first visit to Metro Vancouver since last week’s “blackface” scandal. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to Surrey on Tuesday night, in a riding seized last election as part of the Liberal red wave across what is the second-largest city in B.C. Seven children among 16 dead in Yemen air strikes
Air strikes by the Saudi-Emirati-led coalition fighting rebels in southern Yemen killed 16 civilians on Tuesday, including women and children. The deadly strikes came four days after the Houthi rebels said they would stop missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia - if the military alliance targeting Yemen does the same - after the militia that controls most of the country claimed responsibility for a brazen attack on oil facilities in the kingdom. A doctor at Al Thawra hospital in Yemen’s Ibb province where the bodies were taken said seven children and four women were among the dead in the attack. “Sixteen people, including women and children, were killed and nine others injured” in a coalition air raid targeting a residence in Qataba town in Dhale province, a local official told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity. The Iran-aligned Houthis condemned the coalition for its “continued aggression” against the Yemeni people, according to their Almasirah television network. Two residents told Reuters news agency that 17 people had died in the strikes on Qataba, a front-line town that lies on the main northsouth route between Houthi-controlled Sanaa and the southern port city of Aden.

This was a coup because Surrey Centre, that largely replaced Surrey North in 2015, has not been a traditional Liberal stronghold. In 2011, Surrey North was won by the NDP’s Jasbir Sandhu in a close race with the Conservatives’ Dona Cadman. The Liberals captured just 19 per cent of the Surrey North Aden is nominally the interim seat of Yemen’s vote that year and had not had an MP in internationally recognised government, but that area for at least five elections. southern separatists seized control of the city last month. South Surrey-White Rock is held by Liberal Gordie Hogg, who captured the seat in a 2017 byelection after Conservative Dianne Watts resigned. In 2015, South SurreyWhite Rock was a tight fight between the Conservatives and Liberals. Liberal Ken Hardie captured FleetwoodPort Kells from the Conservatives in the 2015 election, while Liberal Sukh Dhaliwal has held Surrey Newton since winning comfortably over the NDP candidate in 2015. Trudeau, who kept his speech short, talked about the Liberal party’s promise to cut taxes for Canadians, increase Old Age Security at 75 and implement a ban on military-style weapons. He said that it remained up to municipalities to uphold his government’s desire to have handguns also banned. Trudeau attacked Conservative leader Andrew Scheer as someone who would reduce taxes for corporations, and slammed Ontario leader Doug Ford — claiming a lack of teachers in that province was linked to Ford’s relaxation of liquor laws to allow $1 beers to be sold. “In B.C. you have seen great things can happen,” said Trudeau, crediting his government’s climate change policy and economic stimulation through infrastructure investment. “Surrey, you have a choice to make.” Source: https://vancouversun.com

Walk With Imam Hussain (A.S) To Succeed
By: Farhan Haider Moharram is the first month of Islamic Calendar. It is one of the most sacred months, any confrontation or war is prohibited in this month. Muslims around the world start new year by commemorating the death anniversary of Imam Hussain son of Ali (A.S), the Grandson of Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him), who was brutally martyred with his friends and family members in the desert of Karbala (Iraq) on the 10th day of this month in 61AH. Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) says “I’m leaving behind two very important things among you, one Al-Quran and the other my Progeny, keep connected with these and you will succeed in this world and hereafter”. During his whole life he tried to teach people to love and respect his family specially his grandsons Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain (A.S), whether it’s the day of Eid when he had Imam Hussain riding on his shoulder or the lecture in the masjid when he had young Imam Hassan and Hussain sitting in his lap and said “Hassan and Hussain are the leaders of people in heavens”. In another Hadith Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) says “Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain”. Unfortunately Muslims forgot all his teachings very soon. Yazid son of Muawiah who tried to become a ruler (Khalifa) of Muslim world

just after 50 years of Prophet’s death was prone to make changes in Islamic laws, he was used to play and humiliate the religion of Islam. Use of alcohol, adultery, and other sins were acceptable for him. He was declaring Allah’s Harams as Halal. But this is only because of Imam Hussain’s great sacrifice that no one tried to do this again even more than 1400 years have passed. Yazid wanted the oath of Allegiance from Imam Hussain ibn e Ali (A.S) to get legitimacy and strengthen his government. But Imam Hussain based on his family background, and his responsibility to protect the values of Islam, refused to do so and opted for a difficult path. Imam Hussain (A.S) stood against Tyranny, oppression, injustice and corruption. Purpose of his sacrifice was to save the religion of Islam and to protect all the efforts made by his father Imam Ali (A.S) and Grandfather Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Yazid ordered for Imam’s allegiance or his head. Imam (A.S) refused by saying “A person like me can not endorse a person like you”. This is a lesson for mankind till the day of judgement. It tells about the mindset, an honest, trustworthy, Just and true believer can never endorse or follow a corrupt, liar, dishonest, indecent, shameless oppressor. Imam Hussain described his mission as “Amer bil Maroof and Nahi anil munkir”, to order the correct and right and to stop and refrain from the evils. Imam said “I will never give Yazid my
hand like a man who has been humiliated, nor will I flee like a slave… I have not risen to spread evil or to show off… I only desire to enjoin good values and prevent evil.” History has recorded Yazid’s words “there was no Prophet, no Revelation (wahi) or Quran. It was a drama by Mohammed (PBUH). Today I have taken the revenge of my elders killed by Ali ibn e Abi Talib in the war of Badr and Uhud.” Our holy Imam Hussain ibne Ali was killed by so called Muslims with young and adults of his family and friends. The respectful ladies of Prophet’s family were looted, their camps were set on fire, and they were arrested as prisoners of war and were taken from Karbala (Iraq) to Syria. Imam Hussain (A.S) is an example for us to speak truth in front of cruel ruler, Voice our support for oppressed and never get afraid of taking action against injustice and corruption. We should remember Imam’s golden words “Those who are silent when others are oppressed are guilty of oppression themselves”. Muslims all over the world arrange processions and rallies to commemorate the death
The Quran and Muslim Unity
a Muslim, then it is nothing.” Iman must enter the depths of our hearts. Simply saying that I believe is not enough, according to the Quran (49:14). The Qur’an says: “Among human beings are those who say ‘We believe in Allah and the Last day;’ but they are not among the Momins.” (2:8). “The Bedouins say, ‘We believe,’ (O Rasool) Say to them that you don’t believe, but you have accepted to surrender (to Islam) and Iman has not yet entered the depths of your hearts.” (49:14) Also, Iman is not blind faith. The Qur’an clearly says that Iman becomes strong only with knowledge: “And that those on whom knowledge has been bestowed may know that (Qur’an) is the Truth from your Lord, so that they may believe in it and their hearts may be made humbly (open) to it.” (22:4) Therefore, the heart must be kept humble and open, so that Iman acquired by the mind (knowledge) may enter the heart. Iman cannot enter those whose hearts have disease and those who have sealed and hardened their hearts (22:53). Qur’an says the Momins have dignity and power over others: “If you are Momins, then you will have dominance and power” (3:139). And unbelievers will never be able to subdue and dominate Momins: “And never will We grant to the unbelievers victory and domination over Momins.” (4:141) Obviously, if we as Muslims compare ourselves with these very clear verses of Qur’an, then we have to come to only one conclu-
sion: that we are not among the Momins which the Qur’an talks about. Majority of our hearts are not open and humble. In fact, Qur’an tells us that instead of making the heart open and humble, there are some who let their emotions and ego control them. It says: “Have you seen the one who has taken his own emotions as his god.” (25:43) Allama Iqbal has essentially translated this verse when he says: “Zabaan se gar kiya tauheed ka da’wa to kya hasil Banaya hay bute pindaar ko apna khuda tu ne” “What is the benefit if you claim with your tongue in Tauheed (oneness of God)? You have made your emotion an idol and taken it as your god.” How many of us (besides practicing the five pillars) are willing to go deep down in our hearts and honestly admit that we follow our emotions more often than we follow Allah (i.e. Book of Allah)? Allah demands total and complete surrender of our wills:(2:208) “O you who believe! Enter in Islam completely.” Therefore, the problems which we Muslims are facing today are the outward symptoms of the root cause, i.e., the internal friction in our hearts between obedience to Allah and obedience to our own emotions and egos. And it is this internal conflict that is referred to as the disease of the heart by the Qur’an. Iqbal too espouses this same theme of the Qur’an when he says: “Batil du-ee pasand hay haq la sharik hay Shirkat miyan-e haq-o-batil na kar qubool”
anniversary of Imam Husain (A.S). Muslims of Lower mainland arranged sixteenth WALK WITH HUSSAIN procession on Sunday September 8TH 2019 in downtown Vancouver to mourn and acknowledge the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (A.S) and his companions. The arrangements were made by Aza e Hussain Surrey and Azzahraa Islamic Centre Richmond. Hundreds of men, women and children attended the event and paid respect to Imam (A.S). A walk was arranged from Vancouver Public Library to Vancouver Art Gallery. It was controlled by dozens of Volunteers and Vancouver Police. Informative and educational material was distributed to the people who were interested in the event. Some volunteers offered briefings about Imam Hussain, his family and his great sacrifice for Humanity. Participants and bystanders were offered coffee, drinks, croissants and many other food items. It is time of the year to revive our oath of allegiance with Imam Hussain (A.S) against Yazid and Yazidi mindset.
“Batil (as opposed to Haq; the Truth) likes to compromise but Haq is uncompromising. Do not accept the middle ground between Haq and Batil.” Therefore, as long as we Muslims keep compromising the TRUTH contained in the Quran, there is no hope for a cure of our collective mental, psychological, and emotional ills. We do not know how many psychological, emotional, and mental idols we carry all the time in our hearts and minds. Qur’an demands us to cleanse and purify our hearts from all kinds of Ilah. These subtle forms of shirk are addictive and like a slow poison have a deadening effect on our hearts and minds. Iqbal in his unique God given style says: “Dile murda dil naheen hay ise zida kar dobara Ki yahee hay ummaton ke marge kuhan ka chara” “The deadened heart is not a heart. Make it alive again. This is the only way to cure the age old diseases of nations.” How to revive and resuscitate the dead heart; Iqbal says it is only possible through Qur’an: “Gar tu mi khahi Musalman zeestan – neest mumkin juz ba Quran zeestan” “If you wish to live the life a Muslim, then it is not possible except to live by the Quran.” ‘Aisha (R) said: “The Prophet (PBUH) was a walking Quran.” Thus the Sunnah is to live by the Quran and not just read it for earning reward for the hereafter. Iqbal says about our Sahaba (R): “Wo mu’azziz they zamane mein Musalman hokar Aur tum khwar huey tarike Quran hokar” “They had dignity and power in the world
because of Islam. And you are suffering humiliation and defeat because you have left the Qur’an.” And our Prophet (PBUH) will complain to Allah on the Day of Judgment: (25:30) And the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) will say: “O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Quran.” Let us conclude with the following message of Iqbal: “Manf-e-at ek hai is qaum ki nuqsaan bhi ek Ek hi sab ka nabi deen bhi iman bhi ek Harame paak bhi Allah bhi Quran bhi ek Kuchh bari baat thi hote jo Musalman bhi ek” “There is one common gain and one common loss for all Muslims. (Remember the Prophet’s hadith that all Muslims are like a body.) One Prophet (PBUH) for all and one Iman for all. One Ka’aba, one Allah and one Qur’an for all. How great it would be if Muslims were one too!” Let us pray to Allah to unite our hearts in the path of Islam. It is Allah’s promise that if we do that, then we will regain our dignity, power, and glory (24:55). And Allah does not break His promise (2:80).

Why Saudi Arabia and Iran are bitter rivals?
How have things Hezbollah, to fight predominantly Sunni re- most recent case, against a key economic target could upset the apple cart. bel groups. got worse?
By Jonathan Marcus
Defence and diplomatic correspondent Saudi Arabia and Iran are at loggerheads. They have long been rivals, but it’s all recently got a lot more tense. Here’s why.
How come Saudi Arabia and Iran don’t get along?
S
audi Arabia and Iran - two powerful neighbours - are locked in a fierce struggle for regional dominance. The decades-old feud between them is exacerbated by religious differences. They each follow one of the two main branches of Islam - Iran is largely Shia Muslim, while Saudi Arabia sees itself as the leading Sunni Muslim power. This religious schism is reflected in the wider map of the Middle East, where other countries have Shia or Sunni majorities, some of whom look towards Iran or Saudi Arabia for support or guidance. Historically Saudi Arabia, a monarchy and home to the birthplace of Islam, saw itself as the leader of the Muslim world. However this was challenged in 1979 by the Islamic revolution in Iran which created a new type of state in the region - a kind of revolutionary theocracy - that had an explicit goal of
exporting this model beyond its own borders. In the past 15 years in particular, the differences between Saudi Arabia and Iran have been sharpened by a series of events. The 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq overthrew Saddam Hussein, a Sunni Arab who had been a major Iranian adversary. This removed a crucial military counter-weight to Iran. It opened the way for a Shia-dominated government in Baghdad and Iranian influence in the country has been rising ever since. Fast-forward to 2011 and uprisings across the Arab world caused political instability throughout the region. Iran and Saudi Arabia exploited these upheavals to expand their influence, notably in Syria, Bahrain and Yemen, further heightening mutual suspicions. Iran’s critics say it is intent on establishing itself or its proxies across the region, and achieving control of a land corridor stretching from Iran to the Mediterranean.
The strategic rivalry is heating up because Iran is in many ways winning the regional struggle. In Syria, Iranian (and Russian) support for President Bashar al-Assad has enabled his forces to largely rout rebel group groups backed by Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is trying desperately to contain rising Iranian influence while the militaristic adventurism of the kingdom’s young and impulsive Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - the country’s de facto ruler - is exacerbating regional tensions. He is waging a war against the rebel Houthi movement in neighbouring Yemen, in part to stem perceived Iranian influence there, but after four years this is proving a costly gamble. Iran has denied accusations that it is smuggling weaponry to the Houthis, though successive reports from a panel of UN experts have demonstrated significant assistance for the Houthis from Tehran in terms of both technology and weaponry. Meanwhile in Lebanon, Iran’s ally, Shia militia group Hezbollah, leads a politically powerful bloc and controls a huge, heavily armed fighting force. Many observers believe the Saudis forced Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, whom it backs, to resign in 2017 over Hezbollah’s involvement in regional conflicts. He later returned to Lebanon and put the resignation on hold. There are also external forces at play. Saudi Arabia has been emboldened by support
from the Trump administration while Israel, which sees Iran as a mortal threat, is in a sense “backing” the Saudi effort to contain Iran. The Jewish state is fearful of the encroachment of pro-Iranian fighters in Syria ever closer to its border. Israel and Saudi Arabia were the two countries most resolutely opposed to the 2015 international agreement limiting Iran’s nuclear programme, insisting that it did not go far enough to roll back any chance of Iran obtaining the bomb.
Who are their regional allies?
Broadly speaking the strategic map of the Middle East reflects the Shia-Sunni divide. In the pro-Saudi camp are the other major Sunni actors in the Gulf - the UAE and Bahrain - as well as Egypt and Jordan. In the Iranian camp is Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, a member of a heterodox Shia sect, who has relied on pro-Iranian Shia militia groups, including the Lebanon-based
Iran and Saudi Arabia: Their friends and foes Iraq’s Shia-dominated government is also a close ally of Iran, though paradoxically it also retains a close relationship with Washington on whom it has depended for help in the struggle against so-called Islamic State.
How is the Saudi-Iranian rivalry being played out?
This is in many ways a regional equivalent
Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure have inevitably added a new front to the confrontation between Tehran and Riyadh. As in the Gulf, where Iran and Saudi face each other across a maritime border, rising tensions could risk a much broader conflict. For the US and other Western powers, freedom of navigation in the Gulf is essential
and any conflict that sought to block the waterway - vital for international shipping and oil transportation - could easily draw in US naval and air forces. For a long time the US and its allies have seen Iran as a destabilising force in the Middle East. The Saudi leadership increasingly sees Iran as an existential threat and the crown prince seems willing to take whatever action he sees necessary, wherever he deems it necessary, to confront Tehran’s rising influence. Saudi Arabia’s vulnerability has been demonstrated by these latest attacks on its oil installations. If a war breaks out, it will be more perhaps by accident rather than design. But the Saudis’ own activism, encourAre we heading towards a direct war aged in part by a lingering uncertainty as to between Saudi Arabia and Iran? the Trump administration’s own goals in the So far Tehran and Riyadh have fought via region, inevitably adds another element of proxies. Iran and Saudi Arabia are not directly fighting but they are engaged in a variety of proxy wars (conflicts where they support rival sides and militias) around the region. Syria is an obvious example, while in Yemen Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of supplying ballistic missiles fired at Saudi territory by the rebel Houthi movement. Iran is also accused of flexing its muscle in the strategic waterways of the Gulf, through which oil is shipped from Saudi Arabia. The US says Iran was behind recent attacks on foreign tankers there - something it denies.

What happened in Abqiq and Khurais of Saudi Oil Fields?
Sep /14th, Drone attacks were launched on stated-owned Saudi Aramco oil facilities Abqaiq and Khurais on Sept. 14. Abqaiq is considered the world’s largest oil processing plant. The co-ordinated strikes sparked massive fires at the sites and sent thick plumes of smoke into the air. While no one was injured, the attacks took out nearly half
of Saudi Arabia’s oil production, effectively putting five per cent of the global daily output on hold. Officials initially believed the kingdom’s oil operations could be restored within a few days, but hope for that has dwindled as the damage assessment continued. While 50 per cent of operations resumed Tuesday, the remaining portion likely won’t be repaired until the end of September. Houthi rebels say they launched the strikes in retaliation to Saudi Arabia’s military effort against them in Yemen. The group has been locked in a war against a Saudi-led coalition that has fought to reinstate the Yemeni government since 2015. his isn’t the first time Houthi rebels have used drones in combat since the start of the Saudiled war. More recently, the Houthis launched drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s crucial East-West Pipeline in May. In August, Houthi drones struck Saudi Arabia’s Shaybah
oilfield. Since the weekend assaults, the group has threatened to carry out more attacks and claimed its weapons could reach anywhere in Saudi Arabia.
Why does it matter?
The strikes, which temporarily halved Saudi Arabia’s oil production, are considered the largest single supply disruption in half a century. The attack has already had a significant impact on the global oil industry — prices surged as much as 20 per cent at one point on Monday. With fears that full production could be offline for two to three weeks, analysts believe the impacts could widen and intensify. “Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world who has spare capacity for crude,” Roger McKnight, a senior petroleum analyst at En-Pro International, told Global News. “When you knock out five per cent of the country’s capability, you really knocked out all the spare capacity of crude for the global community.” Source: https://globalnews.ca

Andrew Scheer will give more support to seniors
Increase the Age Credit to help our seniors get ahead Saint-Hyacinthe, QC – Today, Andrew Scheer, the Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, announced that a new Conservative government will increase the Age Credit by $1,000. This measure is part of the Conservative plan to put more money in the pockets of all Canadians to help them get ahead. “The increase will benefit seniors with low or medium incomes most,” said Scheer. “Many
seniors live on a fixed income and they are at the mercy of governments like Justin Trudeau’s, which has increased the cost of living and the price of everyday essentials.” Since the Age Credit is income-tested, it will benefit low to middle income seniors. With this measure, an individual aged 65 could receive up to $150 more per year and a couple could receive up to $300 more per year. “Our commitment is clear: it’s time for you to get ahead. This $300 tax relief for senior
couples is on top of our Universal Tax Cut for all Canadians. We will also eliminate the GST from home heating costs and introduce the Green Public Transit Tax Credit. Seniors will benefit from all those tax cuts and file a single tax return in Québec, as we committed to do,” concluded Mr. Scheer. This increase will be the third of its kind made by a Conservative government. In 2006, and again in 2009, Canada’s Conservatives increased the Age Tax Credit by $1,000.
By: The Canadian Charger Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s handling of the SNC Lavalin scandal has been a wake-up call for Canadians as more than ever they’re questioning his performance on many of the key issues facing the country and, asking themselves: Can we afford another four years of Trudeau and, if so, at what cost to the country? With the recent release of Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion’s report, finding Prime Minister Trudeau violated Conflict of Interest rules, the debate rages between those who agree with Mr. Dion’s conclusion that in intervening in an ongoing criminal prosecution of SNC Lavalin, in order to secure the company a deferred prosecution agreement instead of a criminal prosecution, Mr. Trudeau was “acting in his own political interests”; and those who believe Mr. Trudeau that he was “standing up for Canadian jobs.” Moreover, opposition Leader Andrew Scheer is demanding that the RCMP investigate Mr. Trudeau for possible obstruction of justice: a criminal offence which includes possible jail time. Meanwhile, with the release of the Ethic Commissioner’s report, it is now a proven fact that Mr. Trudeau’s public denials that any pressure was put on then Justice Minister and Attorney General Jody Wilson-Rayboult were lies; and lying to Parliament has traditionally been a cause for resignation or dismissal. In the August 17, 2019 edition of the National Post, noted historian and political commentator Conrad Black noted that misleading Parliament on such a large scale, with the full support of his caucus – contrary to the conscience of at least some caucus members, voters would hope – coupled with the “even more scandalous and malicious prosecution of Vice-Admiral Mark Norman, all overlaid on a very inadequate general performance in government for the past four years, should place the government as clear underdogs in the election in two months.” Mr. Black then asserted that Canada – in the whole history of the country - has not seen a government as incompetent and deficient in ethics as the Trudeau government and that consequently Mr. Trudeau should be “thoroughly punished and defeated by the voters for a combination of incompetence and deficient ethics that this country has not seen in Ottawa before.” Although the Ethics Commissioner con-
cluded that Prime Minister Trudeau broke Conflict of Interest rules, he also decided that Mr. Trudeau will face no punishment as a result. Alas, Prime Minister Trudeau awaits the October election campaign and the election results to see whether voters will punish him and his government, and there is much to punish him for. His tepid response to the Quebec provincial government using the notwithstanding clause to ban provincial government employees in positions of authority from wearing religious symbols, the continuing tariffs on Canada’s steel and aluminium – despite Canada’s almost total capitulation to U.S. demands in signing the new NAFTA or USMCA agreement - and his callous response to a First Nations women protesting the Trudeau government’s lack of action on mercury poisoning at Grassy Narrow First Nations leave Canadians with second thoughts about a Prime Minister who came to power professing “sunny ways” and claiming “Canada is back” - whatever that means. Perhaps his quip to protestor Lana Goldberg - “Thank you very much for your donation,” - as security was escorting her out of the Laurier Club, $1,500 a plate Liberal fundraising dinner on March 27, gave Canadians a window into the true character of a carefully crafted politician – born with a silver spoon in his mouth - who claims he’s “concerned” about just about everything Canadians struggle with in their daily lives. Ms. Goldberg was attempting to raise awareness about people suffering from mercury poisoning in the Grassy Narrows First Nations community. Grassy Narrows has been suffering from mercury poisoning in its local water supply for decades, after an upstream pulp and paper mill dumped thousands of pounds of effluent into the English-Wabigoon river system through the ’60s and early ’70s. Ms. Goldberg was representing an advocacy group called Free Grassy Narrows, which aims to help the community secure a long-term care facility for patients of mercury poisonings.
Mr. Trudeau was compelled to apologized to the Grassy Narrows First Nations community after a video surfaced of him telling Ms. Goldberg he appreciated her donation – which was sarcasm for the fact that she didn’t have the money to donate $1,500. Grassy Narrows Chief Randy Turtle stressed that an apology was not enough to solve the grave problem of people suffering from mercury poisoning at Grassy Narrows. “I acknowledge Trudeau’s apology, but more importantly he needs to deliver on his government’s promise to build a Home and Treatment Centre so our mercury survivors can be cared for with dignity,” Mr. Turtle said. He added that said the community needs to have the money put into a trust to ensure that future governments don’t suddenly take away the promised funding. While his callous quip to a woman protesting lack of government action on the mercury poisoning at Grassy Narrows leaves an indelible impression of an aloof politician, who merely claims concern about issues facing Canadians, it was the SNC Lavalin scandal which really lifted the veil on Mr. Trudeau. SNC Lavalin is a 108-year-old engineering company with 50,000 employees throughout the world, 9,000 of them in Canada. In 2015, the RCMP charged the company - a major employer in Quebec—with corruption for allegedly paying various Libyan government officials nearly $48 million in bribes, and defrauding other Libyan entities to the tune of nearly $130 million, all between August 2001 and September 2011 (former employees were also charged in the investigation). In the wake of allegations published in the Globe and Mail on Feb. 7, 2019, claiming the PMO tried to interfere with the potential criminal trial of Quebec engineering giant SNC-Lavalin, the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development announced that it is monitoring the situation, with its working group on bribery say-
Can Canada afford another four years of Trudeau?
ing in a statement March 11 that it is “concerned” by the accusations. The Globe and Mail article referred to unnamed sources to report that the PMO wanted the Attorney General Jody WilsonRaybould to step in and help SNC Lavalin negotiate a “deferred prosecution agreement” - whereby the company would admit its guilt and pay a fine, but avoid a criminal conviction. The deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) only became law this past fall after an intense lobbying campaign by SNC Lavalin. Moreover, the company’s employees have made illegal campaign donations to the Liberal party in the past. When asked if he was apologizing to Ms. Wilson-Raybould for the pressure he and his staff put on her to give SNC Lavalin a DPA, Mr. Trudeau stressed that he continues to believe there was “no inappropriate pressure.” Though, he said, “I’m obviously reflecting on lessons learned through this.” Meanwhile, after signing the new NAFTA or USMCA agreement on November 30, 2018 and, of course, claiming it was a good deal for Canada, there is increasing concern in the business community and throughout the country that the aluminium and steel tariffs – which were not part of the agreement and will be in a separate side deal to be negotiated later – are still in place. In other words, the worst possible threat is still there. Five months after agreeing to the USMCA, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is now saying Canada won’t ratify the agreement until the U.S. steel and aluminium tariffs are lifted. Moreover, because the Canadian government signed on to a six-year review of the USMCA, the U.S. government will have plenty of leverage over Canada at review time: Does “Agree to our stipulations or we’ll withdraw from the agreement,” sound familiar? Moreover, the U.S. tariffs were applied to protect national security, which means whenever the US decides to claim national security it can impose more tariffs. But Team Trudeau needed a deal because the Business Council of Canada wanted a deal. Does this sound like corporations dictating Trudeau government policy? In the wake of the SNC Lavalin scandal, in which Mr. Trudeau and his staff stuck their necks out a long way to go to bat for a company with a history of questionable business deals, this becomes increasingly believable. Jagmeet Singh On Justin Trudeau Brownface Call: ‘It Doesn’t Matter What He Tells Me’
BURNABY, B.C. — Less than two hours after taking a private call on board his campaign bus, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said “it doesn’t matter” what the Liberal leader said to him regarding old photos that surfaced showing Justin Trudeau in blackface and brownface. “It doesn’t matter what he tells me. I’m not a proxy for the people of Canada,” Singh told a crowd of around 200 supporters at a town hall in Burnaby Tuesday evening. According to reports from the
bus, Singh took Trudeau’s call while they were en route to the meeting, and it lasted around 15-20 minutes. The call came after a bombshell report from Time magazine last week which published a photo of Trudeau in brownface at an “Arabian Nights” themed party in 2001. Since then, two other instances of a younger Trudeau in racist makeup have emerged. I’m not a proxy for the people of Canada.”NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh While he didn’t divulge the details of
his call with the Liberal leader, Singh — who is Sikh and the first non-white leader of a federal party in Canada — told his supporters Trudeau needed to redeem himself to every Canadian hurt by the photos. “I don’t think that he understands what people are going through,” Singh said. “The people of Canada who were hurt, they need to know that he understands.” :Source: online--news.com

Photo fest to feature Arab News series on Saudi female success stories
S
HARJAH: Works from the newspaper’s The Face series, shot by Saudi lensman Ziyad Alarfaj, will be on display throughout the fourth edition of the Xposure International Photography Festival which runs from Sept. 19-22 at the Expo
T
Center in the city of Sharjah. Titled “The Face: Portraits from the Kingdom,” the picture presentation includes striking photos that celebrate the groundbreaking accomplishments of Saudi women profiled in the regular section of Arab News. “I want to highlight women who aren’t relatively well-known because they’re too busy working for themselves and for their countries,” said Alarfaj. The cameraman’s main aim was to add a human element to his photographs. “I don’t want to place too much focus on their work. That’s why I capture them in their living rooms,” Alarfaj added. Expo visitors will be able to view shots of successful women from a variety of different careers, fields, and backgrounds. Among those featured are Sara I. Alissa, a professional organizer from Riyadh, Ahlam Alshedokhi, a medical doctor and artist, and university professor Dr. Dana Bakheet. Established in 2015 by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, this year’s event is set
to be the biggest yet and will house an acclaimed selection of more than 1,000 images taken by 357 world-renowned photographers from the Middle East and beyond. “What makes Xposure special, is that it’s not any regular photography festival. I’ve been to many, and Xposure is one of the best,” said Alarfaj. “The participating photographers are among the best in the world.” In addition to works from the likes of British wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas, American cameraman Stephen Wilkes, emerging Emirati picture-taker Amer AlAli, and Brazilian snapper Gabriel Wickbold, Xposure has a packed program in store for photography enthusiasts. Unveiled by Sharjah Media Council Chairman Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Qasimi during a press conference, the festival will also include photography workshops, talks from industry professionals, public seminars, portfolio reviews, and competitions. Working with Muslim Youth – The Do’s and Do Not
By:Nihal Khan his is a question which has probably been lingering in the minds of many “Islamically-aware” youth in the Muslim community for a very long time. They may be the main volunteers in their masjid, be active in their MSA, but cannot figure out an effective means to working with the Muslim youth of their locality. So after working with Young Muslims for the past six years, being a youth director for a period of time, and taking the advice of du’aat and scholars in the west, I have put together this small post. To start: a. Give Da’wah with Wisdom Allah tells us in Surah Nahl 16:125, “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction.” If you want to work with a teenager, realize that different circumstances surround that teenager’s issues. He/ she may be neglected by their parents, they may be hanging around with bad friends, or may simply be looking for the right path but have not found it yet. Every situation must be treated different for the most part. Another item to remember is the saying of Aa’isha (R) the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who said, “If the first revelation was to tell the Arabs to stop drinking, they would have never stopped drinking.” The hadith went on to mention the act of fornication in that context as well. The whole point is that we cannot expect results in a day; rather, we need to be patient and persistent in the youth work we are involved in. Do not ask a sixteen-yearold Muslim youth to stop listening to Jay-Z or stop wearing tight jeans if he/she is not
praying salah. b. Three Types of Muslim Youth As one of my teachers categorized it, generally the Muslim youth in the west fall into three categories: 1. “Religious Youth” They are your MSA going, weekend seminar attending, shaykh so-and-so rocks, etc type of brothers/sisters (You know who you are). They are keen on gaining knowledge, want to go study overseas, and attend college/high school at the same time. They’re active in da’wah and are recognized in their communities. They teach sunday school and conduct the weekly halaqas in their masjid, and truly care about their communities. They are the rising leaders of the Muslim youth. 2. “Middle-Men Youth” a. Be their Friend THESE are the youth the religious crew need to focus on! Who are they? They come to the masjid for Jumu’ah, come to the Friday night youth group, Islamic events, etc. At the same time they may listen to music, could find some better friends to hang out with, and may even let a few curse words fly here and there while they are with their friends. They have a relationship with the religious youth and with the third category (who will be talking about next), the nonreligious youth. The religious youth need to understand that THESE are the people who they need to work with and build a rocksolid relationship with! They are the most effective route towards getting across to the non-religious Muslim youth. How? b. Conduct Relevant Activities
Do not focus on many lecture/knowledge type events for them. The weekly halaqa should be their main Islamic discourse for self-development. These halaqas need to be lots of fun and attention catching. Make sure there are moments in which you have the guys (and/or girls) on the edge of their feet, at times be laughing with them, and at times be really emotional with them. This will stir their emotions to make them think about their true purpose. At the same time, stay 1000 miles away from presenting overly academic material in halaqas in which the middle-men youth are present. c. Be Upto Date Another thing which is important is to be up to date with sports, movies, and music which is popular amongst youth. If you try to relate to them through Ferris Buehler’s Day Off (best movie ever :D) and the youth you are speaking with are 13 years-old, then perhaps you should read up a little bit more on today’s media.
3.“Not-So-Islamic Youth” These youth have a bit of a long road ahead of them. They may not come to the masjid except on Fridays when their parents bring them. They also may not be involved with the masjid, MSA, or even pray regularly. They have girlfriends/boyfriends, do drugs/ alcohol, and also do not hang out with a healthy group of friends. The middle-men youth are really the only group to have a grip on these guys. They are the ones who can bring the “not-so-Islamic youth” towards the masjid and/or activities planned by the religious youth. Even after we may put in our effort, we need to understand that guidance is solely in the hands of Allah. In conclusion, remember the hadith of the Prophet (SAW) in which he said, “To guide one person towards Islam is better then the world and all that it contains.” We are working with youth for Allah’s sake, no matter if our efforts reaped benefit in front of us or not. This hadith should be our motivation to do what we do.

The Chief Public Health Officer’s Report on the State of Public Health in Canada 2018: Preventing Problematic Substance Use in Youth
A Message from Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer
I
am pleased to present my annual report, which is a snapshot of the health of Canadians and a spotlight on the prevention of problematic substance use among youth. This year I am introducing a new dashboard of health indicators to provide an overall picture of the health status of Canadians. In reviewing the dashboard, it is evident that Canada continues to be a healthy nation. We are generally living long lives and rank among the top or middle third for most indicators when compared to other high income countries. I do remain concerned, however, about the influence of persistent health inequalities and the impact of social and economic factors as barriers to living well and to the elimination of key infectious diseases. Major chronic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes continue to be the leading causes of all deaths in Canada. It is important that as we age, we live in good health. Many chronic diseases can be prevented or delayed by approaches that get to the root causes of risks such as tobacco smoking, physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, and harmful use of alcohol. At the same time, mental health impacts every aspect of our lives, including relationships, education, work, and community involvement. Although the majority of Canadians report positive mental health, a third of us will be affected by a mental illness during our lifetime. There are also worrying trends in relation to some infectious diseases. We are seeing a rise in sexually transmitted infections, while antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a global threat to our ability to cure infections. Lastly, as I highlighted in my previous report, tuberculosis is having a serious and ongoing impact on some First Nations and Inuit communities. Many cases of infectious diseases can be prevented or eliminated by reducing risks of exposure and ensuring access to screening and treatment – provided that partners also tackle underlying social factors by improving living
conditions and confronting stigma. To address key public health issues, I set out my vision and areas of focus for achieving optimal health for all Canadians earlier this year. I will champion the reduction of health disparities in key populations in collaboration with many partners and sectors. I will focus efforts in the areas of tuberculosis, AMR, built environments, sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, children and youth, and the prevention of problematic substance use. This brings me to this year’s focus on preventing problematic substance use. The growing number of opioid-related overdoses and the over 8000 deaths since 2016 are tragic and unacceptable. The national life expectancy of Canadians may actually be decreasing for the first time in decades, because of the opioid overdose crisis. At the same time, because of its social acceptance, we have lost sight of the fact that continued high rates of problematic alcohol consumption are leading to a wide-range of harms. In fact, 25% of youth in grades 7 to 12 use alcohol excessively. I am also aware that the change in legal status of cannabis means we need to make sure that youth understand that legal does not mean safe. We have to think about how to reverse these trends for future generations. That is why this report centres on youth and explores the reasons for harmful substance use, as well as effective approaches to prevent problematic use. There is a complex interplay of factors that may lead youth to use substances. We know that the marketing, advertising, and availability of a substance can increase substance use in youth. We also know that youth are more likely to use substances as a coping mechanism when they have experienced abuse and other forms of trauma. But we also know that there are protective factors that can help build youth resilience, such as stable environments and positive family and caregiver relationships. The interconnected nature of these factors means there is a critical need to collaborate across many sectors to develop comprehensive prevention solutions. The next generation of interventions can connect sectors such as housing, social services, edu cation, public health and primary health care, at multiple levels to implement coordinated policies, public and professional education and programs. We can also work together
with the media and private sector to promote new social norms around lower risk use of substances. Our efforts need to value the experiences and voices of youth and those who use substances. The media, health care, and social service organizations can help to eliminate stigma and discrimination by adopting equitable and compassionate policies, practices and language. There will never be just one answer to this ever-shifting issue of problematic substance use. This is a key moment in Canada to examine how
we address substance use across all areas of potential action: prevention, harm reduction, treatment and recovery. My aim with this report is to draw attention to the central role of prevention. As important initiatives like the Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy advance, this report can help to inform these collective efforts to prevent substance use from becoming problematic. I hope my report will stimulate discussion and lead to renewed action to achieve this goal. www.canada.ca/en/public-health

Pakistan PM meets Saudi leaders, condemns Aramco attacks hmood, the prime minister’s special aide tage acts,” Khan said.
RIYADH: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the recent missile and drone strikes on Saudi Aramco oil facilities in the Eastern Province while meeting Saudi leaders in Jeddah on Thursday. “Pakistan fully supports the Kingdom with all its capacities in confronting these sabo-
The king stressed that the Kingdom is capable of dealing with the criminal acts that target the security and stability of the region and global energy supplies. The prime minister also briefed Crown Prince Mohammed about the situation in Indian-administered Kashmir after New Delhi revoked the limited constitutional autonomy of the disputed Himalayan region on August 5. Earlier in the day, the prime minister arrived in Saudi Arabia on a two-day official visit, before his trip to New York to attend the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Makkah governor Prince Khalid bin Faisal bin Abdulaziz received Khan at King Abdulaziz International Airport. Pakistan’s envoy to Saudi Arabia Raja Ali Ejaz was also in attendance. Khan was accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Foreign Secretary Sohail Me-
for overseas Pakistanis Zulfiqar Bukhari, and other officials. The foreign office said late Wednesday that Khan would discuss the “various dimensions of the grave situation in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, arising from India’s illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019” during his meeting with the Saudi leadership “The Prime Minister has been in regular contact on the Kashmir issue with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman,” the foreign office statement read. It further highlighted the “growing momentum in Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations in all areas of cooperation” since the visit to Islamabad by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in February 2019. “During the Prime Minister’s visit, the two sides will discuss ways of further strengthening the economic partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia,” the official handout stated.
KARACHI: Pakistan’s head coach-cumchief selector Misbah-ul-Haq on Wednesday made a fervent appeal to the world cricketing community to do more for the country in its bid to stage full-time international matches on home soil while forewarning his charges not take the new look Sri Lanka side lightly in the upcoming limited-overs series. Addressing his maiden media conference at the National Stadium on Wednesday after Pakistan team’s practice session was cancelled following heavy rains for the second successive day in the mega city, Misbah made it clear that in the prevailing scenario, it would be fair that Pakistan shouldn’t be isolated as far playing series on home soil is concerned “I think the situation everywhere these days is more or less the same. Pakistan has done the best it can do
to provide peaceful and safe environment where people can live in peace and enjoy their lives. In sporting terms, I firmly believe all of us in the cricketing world need to do more to have more countries playing in Pakistan,” the 45-year-old Misbah who retired in 2017 as Pakistan’s most successful Test captain, said. “As a sportsman, my conviction is that cricket, or for that matter any other sport, shouldn’t suffer just of the fears the foreigners have in their minds. We are living in a world where at present no place or country can be considered completely incident free of hundred per cent safe but, of course, the very best level of security and hospitality can be ensured for the visiting teams and officials. “Look we are all performing our rituals in our day-to-day life without being fearful. Cricket is a passion
in Pakistan and is a sport that brings people closer. Sri Lanka has always supported and helped Pakistan in every possible way to end the cricketing isolation at the international level. They are true ambassadors of their country and by coming to Pakistan now they have further strengthened the great friendship our two nations have always enjoyed,” he added. The former skipper went on to add: “Our ultimate goal is to make sure more teams visit Pakistan because playing at neutral venues [like in the UAE] is or was never an ideal solution to the problems we have had faced over the past decade or so. Believe me, both I and my team members are very excited to be playing in front of our own fans because their presence inspire you hugely. This feeling was non-existent in the years of isolation and we badly missed the

“Assalamu Alaikum”, Art Work presentation to the Surrey City Hall
I
t was an exciting and heart warming celebration of the U. N. International Day of Peace which was sponsored by the Global Peace Alliance and held at the Surrey City Hall on September 21st 2019. During this lovely and an extensive event a special presentation was also made to the Surrey City Hall. A collage art work with the following inscription was presented; “Assalamu Alaikum- Peace Be Upon You U.N. International Day of Peace Presented by Global Peace Alliance and Farooq M. Rai ( Peace & Harmony ) to Surrey City Hall “ The City of Surrey Councillor Laurie Guerra, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee graciously accepted the unique art work on behalf of the City and also spoke eloquently on this auspicious occasion. The president of the GPA, Ms. Niovi Patsicakis introduced Farooq Rai, a Canadian of Pakistan origin by making the following remarks ; “ Mr. Farooq Rai, has had an extensive public service career in British Columbia dating back to 1966. He was a member of the Provincial Advisory Council on Multiculturalism and assisted in the passage of BC’s Multiculturalism Act. Mr. Rai was appointed as the first Assistant Deputy Minister, and Head of Ministry responsible for Multiculturalism and Immigration in 1994. Also a writer and advocate in the community, Mr. Rai was recognized for his dedicated volunteer work and efforts in promoting better intercultural relations. He considers the message of Peace & Harmony important and it is the theme of his unique art work.
We are very pleased that Mr. Rai is presenting the City of Surrey with one of his art works on behalf of Global Peace Alliance, Surrey.” Farooq responded by stating that; “ I was touched to see the very moving First Nations greetings and blessings by the Kwantlen chief. I am reminded that when we celebrate Multiculturalism related events
we should never forget that with the exception of the aboriginal people, all of us are immigrants. We must therefore be mindful of this and always recognize its important significance . I want to convey my appreciation to the present and past Mayors and City Councillors for their dedicated work in promoting harmonious cross cultural relation. I acknowledge every one’s hard work and contribution in this regard. Incidentally in 1993-94, I had the pleasure of working as a member of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Youth Violence, City of Surrey while on a leave of absence without pay. A subsequent report titled “ A call for Action” was published. Secondly, I want to take this opportunity here to recognize the work of Global Peace Alliance. I consider an asset and a positive reflection of a City to have such worthy organizations around, who are working hard in promoting peace. We should acknowledge the work of the volunteers performed by the committed citizens. I ask you to applaud their spirit of volunteer
work. I, for this reason, take pleasure in making the joint presentation with GPA to the City of Surrey on this particular day, when we are celebrating U.N. International Day of Peace. By the way our family visited Africa earlier this year where our daughter is work-
ing for the UNHCR and the ‘ field work’ is an eye opener. My last point is in reference to the presenting art work and relevance to the City Hall. Historically, City Hall is known to be a place where citizens go for a variety of reasons. In recent times, City Hall has also become a venue where all sorts of activities take place such as the one we are having now. This particular art work is part of my “ Peace & Harmony “ Exhibition. ‘Assalamu Alaikum’ means Peace be upon you. It is a simple message of goodwill which is symbolically inscribed on a doorway so that all citizens are welcome. Thank you.” The Global Peace Alliance, Surrey Society (GPA) held its ‘Give Peace a Chance’ Surrey Festival. The festival celebrated the International Day of Peace which is set by the United Nations and It’s theme this year reflects our climate crisis, and calls for the earth’s protection. At this event GPA also recognized, with certificates, prizes and trophies, the participants and the winners of the 2019 PEACE-THEMED LITERARY & VISUAL ARTS CONTESTS. The festival this year had fun art activities for the young. This was a free event open to the public. Refreshments were also served. There were prominent authors There was an arts and craft room for the young at heart and exhibit of arts on the theme of peace. Global peace Alliance is a non profit organization run by directors from varied ethnic, religious and political background. The board consists of Niovi Patsicakis , Patrick O’Connor, Asad Syed, Rajesh Jiyaparkash , Annie Ohanna, Maryam Boukherbani , Furqan Gehlen .
