2 E d i t o r i a l Miracle Special: Every Single Vote Matters Safar 12, 1441H Oct 11, 2019
“O
ne man. one vote” is the most fairest method to choose leaders in any democratic society. Voting is patriotic right to choose your representative government. A citizen’s vote is a secret ballot. Voting is the most important exercise a citizen will do as a responsible citizen of a democratic nation. In a functioning democracy, being able to vote allows citizens to express their political opinions by voting a particular policy or candidate that has your best interest in mind. By this, you can decide your very own future by opting a candidate who might speculate your own aspects and possibly those people who share the same opinion with you. Voting is a right of all eligible voters in any country. It is seen as the normal or typical form of political activity and it remains the primary means of political participation. The goal of any voting system is to establish the intent of each individual voter and translate those intents into a final tally or reality. According to Abraham Lincoln; “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent” This further explains that in a truly democratic society, governments are instituted among qualified and responsible men who derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. Another ex-American president, Lyndon Johnson have this to say in support of Abraham Lincoln that “The right to vote is the most basic right, without which all others are meaningless”. Voting is the first duty of democracy. Government is based on citizens votes for representation. In a democracy, your vote is your voice and the act of standing up for what you believe. Voting helps to preserve our way of life. The Federal Election October 21, 2019 Nonetheless, it is of the essence for every voter to cast his/her vote, for every single vote matters in the elec-
tions. So far as the local Muslim populace is concerned, it is of crucial importance for it to go to the designated polling stations of their respective areas to exercise it’s hard-earned right of franchise that has been bestowed upon the people being the citizens of the country of its adoption. Every vote matters in the democratic set up of the sitting Member of Parliament, where the people are its real architects. This is the precise reason that the Miracle newspaper is strenuously creating awareness in the Islamic community for its positive and energetic participation in the electoral process, may that be started from city level. It is, however, regretted to point out that despite the repeated wake up calls the local Muslim Ummah does not deem appropriate to pay heed to the wake up alarms and let the opportunity of sending more of its representatives in the parliament slip out of its hands. Consequently, the representation of this community at all the levels of governance is devastatingly much below its proportion. This is appallingly dismaying picture in comparison to the other ethnic communities around. Everyone has seen that in this election 2019 more than 40 Punjabi community members are participating and specially in Surrey major ridding all 3 candidates from major parties are opponents. . Now when the time for getting something substantial has practically run out owing to the fault of none other than the community itself, it is futile to cry over the spilt milk. All the Muslim votes in their respective areas and bringing the

Why Muslim Governments are so stupid?
By: Syed Soharwardy, Calgary 1. They created Taleban and AlQaedah to fight for US against Soviet Union. Once the objective was achieved, Taleban and AlQaedah were used to kill Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan. More than one million Muslims were killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Taleban, AlQaedah and NATO forces. 2. They used Saddam Hussain to invade Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Gulf war brought US bases in the Middle East. They put embargo on Iraq which killed more than one million Iraqi Muslims including children. 3. They made up fake WMD and invaded Iraq and tried to create ShiaSunni civil war in Iraq. After Iraqi invasion by US forces more than
If You Don’t Vote, Complaint
then DON’T
For every one that complains that they don’t like how the Parliament is running things now and for every one that thinks the MP is on the right track, today is your day — Election Day. Nobody in this world has the right to complain about how our parliamentarians are working, and how our representatives are voting against any public issue at national and international levels, is unless he or she has voted. Voting for our representatives is the cornerstone of our democracy, and we do have the power to change how national works through our vote. Voting takes very little time, and if you did not vote for a candidate you should not complain, because you did not even take the time to vote for those people who make the decisions.

They created Arab spring and created civil war in Libya and destroyed the whole country. 6.They created ISIS to create civil war in Iraq and Syria. More than 350,000 Iraqis and Syrians were killed. And more than 5 million Syrians were made refugees. More than 300,000 Iraqis were displaced from their homes. Both countries are completely destroyed. 7. They used Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and UAE to train, weaponize and support ISIS to achieve the objectives for Israel and the US in the Middle East. 8 .They created war between Yemen and Saudi Arabia which has killed more than 100,000 Yemenis and displaced millions of Yemeni Muslims. 9. voters out of their homes for casting their votes at the polling boots. Putting together of every solitary vote matters for winning the elections in the same way as the little drops of water are required to contribute their might to make an ocean. The youth volunteers of both the sexes can accomplish this productive job conveniently and effectively. Besides, it is equally imperative for all the organizations of the community operating in this area to formulate some tangible plan and educate the people for future on this issue of crucial importance, as the cycle for the federal elections at different levels continues to roll ahead on the footing of four years term under the law.
However, the sad fact of this world is that most people do not vote. They do not think it is worth the time; they don’t think their one vote will matter, and they think that there is nothing that can be done to fix the way politics are now. Those people are wrong. While change is never easy or fast it can be done, and voters have proven they can speak with one very loud voice. The only thing someone can do that is worse than not voting is voting blindly. Voters need to make sure they are sending someone into office they think can do the best job. Read the newspaper today, and get a grasp on the people running for member of parliament , and then go into the voting booth. Better yet, take a minute right now to contemplate what issues are the most important to you, your family at national levels and then take a look at what the candidates believe in. If you don’t know what you believe in, don’t complain when someone does it for you. In short, go vote. These are the people that represent you in parliament and make decisions that directly affect your public life like Canada wide Infrastructure, Education, Tution Fee, Health, Immigration matters, Housing, Human rights, Indigenous Matters, Environment and Energy, Police Crime Control cells , your religious rights, your national and international related matters, seniors, youth and women issues, Canada alliance with NATO, Bill, 21, C51, 24, 518 and other national issues in your daily life Do the job right, and make sure they are Representatives you believe in. fight for them. After objectives are achieved they are now using Turkey to fight against Kurdish Muslims. 10. With all these wars and terrorism China is taking the full advantage and committing crimes against Uyghur Muslims. The entire Muslim world and the western world is silent. They are shouting for Hong Kong but for Uyghur Muslims, no voice. China is committing crimes against humanity but no one bothers because if US can use Muslim governments to fulfil American agenda why China cannot do the same? 11. With all these wars and terrorism Indian government is also taking the full advantage to wipe out more than 200 million Indian Muslims from India. Right in the presence of police Indian Muslims are facing lynching by the extremist Hindus but no one bothers to stop it. Kashmir is under curfew for months, Muslim women are getting raped by Indian army, children and youth are getting kid-
naped, elders are arrested and killed. Except few Muslim countries other Muslim governments are fully in sync with Indian government. 12. The genocide and mass murders of Muslims around the world are being silently watched by Muslim governments. I hope one day, these current Muslim governments will be facing the same, Insha Allah. They will all be having the same consequences what King Raza Shah Pehlavi of Iran, Saddam Hussain, Gaddafi, Hosni Mubarak, etc. faced. Insha Allah. 13. The entire western media is screaming for protestors in Hong Kong but this biased and blind western media is unable to see the atrocities committed by the Indian army in Kashmir, Israeli army in Palestine and Chinese government against Uyghur Muslims. Is there any honesty and fairness left in this world? O’ God, where are you?

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday announced that his party’s anti-government ‘Azadi March’ to the capital will now take place on October 31 instead of October 27. Speaking to reporters, he said the party would now join Kashmiris in observing October 27 as a black day across the country in protest against the Indian occupation of Jammu and Kashmir. Ignoring the calls of other opposition parties to delay the proposed long march, Rehman had announced last Thursday that his party had decided to hold the antigovernment march to Islamabad on Oct 27. His party had formally sought permission from the Islamabad administration to hold the so-called Azadi March on October 27 at D-Chowk located in the federal capital’s red zone.“The JUI-F will be holding the Azadi March on October 27, 2019, at D-Chowk, Islamabad, exercising its democratic and Constitutional right under Articles 16 and 17 of the Constitution against the incumbent government,” read

Asian Development Bank to provide $2.7bn to Pakistan in 2019
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday announced that the regional bank will provide $2.7 billion in approved financing to Pakistan during

the outgoing calendar year. The ABD, through a tweet, also announced that under the recently approved Country Operations Business Plan (COBP) 2020-2022, it will increase average lending to the country to $2.4bn a year — showing a whopping increase from the $1.4bn on average from 2015 to 2018. According to the ADB, it will leverage the country’s lending through the mobilisation of co-financing and funding from other sources, including regional concessional resources. “The new COBP will support Pakistan’s development goals and complement efforts by other development partners,” it added. On Monday, the Manila-based
lending agency said it had approved a $200 million loan as additional financing to support the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). A press release issued by the ADB noted that an ADB-financed social protection development project, approved in 2013, had enabled the enrollment of over 855,000 beneficiaries of the BISP. Earlier in July, the ADB had announced to extend up to $10 billion indicative lending to Pakistan for various development projects and programmes during the next five years. The bank said it had a series of country consultations to formulate a new Country Partnership Strategy (CPS), which will guide ADB’s engagement

cluding in KP, leaving at least 38 people dead, over 500 injured and thousands of houses and road infrastructure damaged. Following the quake, at least 67 individuals were injured after shallow tremors struck Mirpur city of Azad Kashmir. Similarly, Green Party leader Elizabeth May looked to interject, especially on climate issues and to differentiate her party from Singh’s NDP on progressive issues. At one point, May said Scheer’s proposal to cut foreign aid by a quarter is “the worst idea in your whole non-platform,” referring to the fact that the Conservatives have so far declined to release a full platform. Aside from Scheer’s direct attack on Trudeau, the opening of the debate was consumed by Maxime Bernier, the leader of the People’s Party of Canada. The rest of the leaders were encouraged to scuffle with Bernier about controversial comments he has made about immigration in Canada and about teen climate activist Greta Thunberg. While taking on Bernier, who has called for lower levels of immigration and complained about “climate hysteria,” Trudeau delivered a line the Liberals hope will stick: “Your role on this stage right now seems to be to say publicly what Mr. Scheer believes privately,” said Trudeau. Immediately, the Liberals posted those words on Trudeau’s Twitter account and paid to promote the message on the social media platform. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet took centre stage during a debate about Quebec’s Bill 21, the law forbidding religious symbols in some public service jobs, but struggled to impose himself in other topics. At one point, speaking about the government’s purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline, he referred to Alberta as “over there,” and repeatedly referred to “the provinces and Quebec.” When he referred to the Canadian Constitution, he described it as “yours, not mine.” On Bill 21, Trudeau took Singh to task for not promising to intervene in the provincial law, one of the few times he took direct aim at the NDP leader. Although Trudeau hasn’t promised to intervene in the court fight over the secularism law he has said he won’t close the door on the idea. In response, Singh sounded a note he has used repeatedly on the campaign, criticizing Trudeau for his sarcastic response to protesters from Grassy Narrows First Nation who interrupted a Liberal fundraiser to complain about mercury poisoning in their community. “What kind of prime minister does that?” said Singh, in one of the few moments when he and the Conservative leader were able to find common ground. “I wish I had that answer, but it’s one that doesn’t deserve to be re-elected,” said Scheer. Erything you need to know about the 2019 Federal Election
TTAWA – It’s on. On Sept. 11 Justin Trudeau called the federal election, kicking off five and a half weeks of campaigning before Canadians vote on Oct. 21. Who will you be voting for, and when, and where? When will the leaders vying to be prime minister debate each other? When is voting day? The official election day is Monday, Oct. 21 across Canada. Polling places will be open for 12 hours, with the time varying, depending on what province you are in. Who can vote? Canadian citizens who are 18 years of age or older can vote, so long as you’re are able to prove your identity and address. If you do not have ID, an elector registered to the same polling station can vouch for you, so long as you declare your ID and address and that person has not vouched for anyone else. There is an exception in the case of long-term care facilities, where there is an ability for someone to vouch for more than one person. You can use your voter information card as proof of address, but you’ll also need additional ID, whether a utility bill, or a student ID card, or bank statement, for example. If you have a driver’s license or other government ID that has your photo, your name and current address, then you only need that one piece, but still bring your voter information card with you. You can check to see if you are registered to vote, here. Can I vote in advance? Yes. There will be more advance polling stations open across Canada than in past elections, and they will operate between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. across the country on: Friday, Oct. 11 Saturday, Oct. 12 Sunday, Oct. 13 Monday, Oct. 14 Find your polling place at your card. You can also vote at any time during the election period by mail, or at an Elections Canada office, or at one of more than 100 university or college campus locations, using a special ballot. If you are a Canadian living abroad, you can also vote by mail, and under recent election law changes, no longer need to prove you have been out of the country less than five years, or state your intention to return to Canada.
How do I know what riding I am in? You can find out what riding you are in, by entering your postal code, There has not been a riding redistribution since the 2015 election, so if you haven’t moved, it’ll be the same riding as the last time you voted for your Member of Parliament. How do I found out who the candidates in my riding are? you can see everyone that has registered with Elections Canada to be on the ballot in your riding. As well, CTVNews.ca is compiling a series of riding profiles, looking at the hotly-contested ridings, tight races, potentially contentious campaigns, and more. We are digging deeper into dozens of ridings, so check back for those soon. Who are the party leaders? The leader of the Liberal Party is Justin Trudeau. The leader of the Conservative Party is Andrew Scheer. The leader of the New Democratic Party is Jagmeet Singh. The leader of the Green Party is Elizabeth May. The leader of the Bloc Quebecois is YvesFrançois Blanchet. The leader of the People’s Party is Maxime Bernier. When are the official debates? For the first time, a Debates Commissioner led the efforts to organize two national leaders’ debates during the election, one in French and one in English. These debates will include Trudeau, Scheer, Singh, Blanchet, Bernier and May. The English debate will be held on Oct. 7 and the French debate will be Oct. 10. Both are happening at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que. and each will be moderated by five journalists. We will have live coverage of the debates across CTV News platforms. Where can I read what each party is proposing? On CTVNews.ca we are keeping track of and analyzing each party’s major promises. We also have links to each campaign’s policy platforms. CTV National News is also looking at specific issues during the campaign, from the viewpoint of a community to assess “what’s riding” on various issues. How do I stay on top of the polling numbers? There’s a few ways you can do that, we have
daily updates from pollster Nik Nanos. These will show the latest standings of every party in public opinion, on our main election page. As well, if you’re into podcasts, subscribe to Trend Line, a check-in on the public mood of Canadians with Nanos and host Michael Stittle. There are new episodes three times a week during the campaign. What is the concern about disinformation in the election? In the lead up to the campaign, Canadian security agencies cautioned that the federal election will “very likely” be the target of foreign cyber interference, but there are also concerns about domestic disinformation with the ease of mass voter contact, among other factors. Elections law was amended to attempt to crack down on foreign meddling and the reporting of advertising by third-party advocacy groups, though experts have said there are still gaps, including that not-sponsored social media may be used with malicious intent. CTVNews.ca is publishing regular “Truth Tracker” features where we fact check information being spread online. See a story or post circulating on social media that you think may be disinformation or in need of fact-checking? Let us know by sharing with us the link to the post or the source of the information. You can email us by clicking here or visit our Newsbreaker page. CTV National News will also be regularly digging in to disinformation and the promises the leaders make. As well, subscribe to Attention Control, a new investigative podcast from Kevin Newman that will dig into the impact of fake news, where it comes from and how it affects voters. There will be new episodes posted weekly during the campaign. What are other Canadians hearing and seeing? CTV News is offering cross-platform stories and interviews with average Canadians and undecided voters across the country. These people offer up what they are seeing on their social media feeds, share how their minds are being shaped at key points over the campaign, and weigh in on how the issues that arise are playing out in their lives. Why do I vote for local representation and not the prime minister? In Canada, we have a parliamentary democracy. There are currently 338 seats in the House of Commons, one for a representa-
tive from each of the 338 ridings. The 105 members in the Senate are appointed, and not elected. The electoral system we follow is called first past the post (FPTP), meaning that the candidate with the most votes in each riding is elected to that seat. Generally speaking, the party who has the most elected representatives forms government, and the leader of that party becomes the prime minister. The party with the second-most elected representatives becomes the official Opposition. In order to form a majority government, the party with the most seats needs to have more than half of the seats in the House of Commons, so in the current context: 170 seats. If no one party elects 170 MPs, then it will be a minority Parliament, with the party with the highest number of seats looking to form government. Minorities are generally more volatile as their stability relies on cross-party agreements or support to be able to advance policy. What happens to Parliament and government during a campaign? As soon as the election was called, the current Parliament was dissolved, meaning all business before the House and Senate gets wiped away, and the House essentially ceases to exist, meaning there won’t be a sitting, and no documents can be tabled. In this case, the 42nd Parliament has come to an end, and after the election the 43rd will begin. Any bills or motions that a returning member wants to advance, have to be reintroduced. The government, and the bureaucracy in each federal department and agency enter into what’s called “caretaker” mode, where the general approach is to keep the lights on and the machinery of government humming. During this period, government decisions and announcements are restricted to routine, non-controversial, emergency or urgent matters in the public interest, easily reversible by a new government, or agreed to by the opposition parties. Where can I watch designated election coverage? A few places. On our special election webpage, and nightly on CTV News Channel and CTV National News, Canada’s #1 national newscast. Safar 12, 1441H Oct 11, 2019 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “(There is) no ‘Adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allah’s permission), nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Haamah, nor is there any (bad omen in the month of) Safar, and one should run away from the leper as one runs away from a lion.” (Bukhari, 5387; Muslim, 2220).

3 Aspects of the Islamic Work Ethic
Hard work is one of the most important traits of Muslim men and women alike. A person who seeks Allah’s bounty through hard work is most highly praised, and for that reason work is considered a type of worship. The prophet (saw) said: The believer dies with his sweat on his brow. [An-Nasai] To have sweat on one’s brow indicates labour and hard work. When interpreting this hadith, it is clearly shown that the efforts a person makes are taken into consideration by Allah once he or she dies, along with his or her other deeds, sins, and virtues. And this is not haphazard, because Allah already ordered us to go after rizq (bounty, wealth): And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah , and remember Allah often that you may succeed. [Quran, 62:10] I remember that N.A. was always the last to leave the workshop. He never rested , keeping an eye on everything and everyone. He also used to spend hours and even days trying to fix problems. I always admired his patience and his love for his job. And to top it all off, with all the hustle and the bustle around him, he remained a practicing Muslim. Are you aware that these very ethics are the reason behind the flourishing economy of several countries? Can you believe that these ethics were set 1400 years ago in the Quran and sunnah?

nlike what stereotypes and prejudices teach the world about Islam, this religion does not excuse laziness. It is quite impressive to examine the concept of work from an Islamic point of view. In fact, there is quite an emphasis on work in the holy Quran. With 360 mentions in different surahs, work (‘amal) has a tremendous value in Islam. Our religion is based on an ideal of practice— thus it is a religion of action! During the past three months I put the this idea under the microscope. I moved from theory to practice when I accepted a summer job in a factory where I met N.A., a thirtyish electronics engineer and the manager of the workshop where I was employed. I soon saw that N.A. was the model of a hard-working Muslim— clearly a walking example the three as- Once I asked him “what is your principle their rights and also where everyone pects of Islamic work ethic: 1). the self, in work?” He simply answered: “Perfeccan execute their tasks perfectly. Is Safar a month of troubles?
here were many superstitions during the Era of Jahiliyyah (ignorance) about the month of Safar. Safar is the second of the twelve hijri months. Before Islam, Safar was regarded as a month of bad luck and trouble among the people of Jahiliyyah. They believed that weddings had in Safar would end in divorce; any business, deeds done in Safar would turn out vain, anything started in this month would result in bad luck. Arabs assumed that there was a snake in their stomach called “safar” which, when got hungry, bit them and made them suffer torture. There are also other narrations saying “safar” was believed to be an infectious stomach disease of people or animals; or it referred to the month of Safar and they believed to have misfortune in that month. (Kutub al Sitta) Moreover, it was counted as of the major sins to perform umrah in the month of Safar. The Messenger of Allah swt stated “Umrah is halal (permissible) all the time.” (Bukhari) Narrated Ibn Abbas: “The people (of the Pre-lslamic Period) used to think that to perform ‘Umra during the months of Hajj was one of the major sins on earth. And also used to consider the month of safar as a forbidden (i.e. sacred) month and they used to say, “When the wounds of the camel’s back heal up (after they return from Hajj) and the signs of those wounds vanish and the month of safar passes away then (at that time) ‘Umra is permissible for the one who wishes to perform it.” In the morning of the 4th of Dhul-Hijja, the
Prophet and his companions reached Mecca, assuming Ihram for Hajj and he ordered his companions to make their intentions of the Ihram for ‘Umra only (instead of Hajj) so they considered his order as something great and were puzzled, and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! What kind (of finishing) of Ihram is allowed?” The Prophet replied, “Finish the Ihram completely like a non-Muhrim (you are allowed everything).” (Bukhari; Book 26, Hadith 635) There is no bad omen in the month of Safar Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, ‘(There is) no ‘Adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allah’s permission). nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is Oct 11-25, 2019 Safar 12-26, 1441H there any Hamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of safar, and one should run Isl. After Fundraising Maulana Tariq Jameel addressed in the Urdu language to the audience, he said that you overseas people should spend quality time with your family and obey the teachings of our beloved Prophet Mohammad (saw) Quran and Sunnah, how our Prophet gave us the guidelines for our orphans. We respect our relations between husband and wife, parents and children. At the end, Maulana made the Duaa for Muslim Ummah and Kashmir.
Thank You Maulana Tariq Saheb By Asma Shums he Well known Maulana Saheb, religious motivational speaker Tariq sahib had visited Surrey on Sep 29t. He is very simple person with very special values. He preaches with base of Quran and Sunnah. Maulana, with very religious person with a open mind and heart The World -As he said our society human race started with Hazrat Adam and Hawa (Eve). The first very important relation on this earth is of husband and wife. They get children, these children have their own family and other relations are formed of brothers, sisters, uncle, aunt, cousins and so on .Then a community is formed. The people of different religious and communities line in harmony following and respecting their own religion and same way respecting the tradition and belief of their friends and
T
other people in the society .The world has become like a global village. The people go from their villages to cities and States and even settled in other countries. When people migrate they try to keep their own values, leave some and adopt some new ways of life. The first strong reason in the lives of people is livelihood, to earn money for the families, to support them and give them better life. There are other reasons too, but whichever reasons are there to live and support, financial stability in some cases survival in most common and important. Qualities of being human - it is very important to be a good human. When different culture came into contact with each other, there are some issues some problems and situations . People which need to be tackle by very diplomatic manner with lots of understanding. Coming back to the message of
Maulana Sahib love is very much important and essential for good family life. The relation of husband and wife and parents and children is based on love and affection .when parents as a husband and wife have good relation, they are well balanced and very happy and stable with each other they will be able to provide very good sound base for children to grow as a good human being and then good citizens. Love is very strong emotion. When family members have love for each other they will help each other with no expectations. Family will grow together help each other, bare the problems and discomfort of family life. It is not easy ,love is not enough but love gives many other qualities which is sufficient to understand tolerates and adjust with other difficulties or situations. Patents and youth .The parents with their
life style behaviours values and good characters can teach or show practically the way of living life to the youth. The first teacher is mother in family, when the children with strong character strong foundation will go to school and universities they will make their mark there and may help others to be good and loving and give them support and strength they need .Another important thing which he said not to fight with family, but show patience and tolerance, not to be victim of believing in black magic etc. But have strong faith in God .let us live our life on the Sunnas of our beloved Prophet (SAW) and enjoy the most honourable, lucky and blessed chance of living the life as a human being.

NDP Plan Helps Prevent Gang Crime
Jagmeet Singh takes action for people where Justin Trudeau has failed SURREY – NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh unveiled his plan today to tackle rising organized crime in B.C. and keep our kids out of gangs, taking action where Liberals have refused to act. “People in Surrey are worried about the future for their kids, but instead of listening,
Justin Trudeau’s Liberals chose to spend $4.5 billion of your money on a pipeline while leaving British Columbians to tackle crime alone,” said Singh. “New Democrats have the courage to take a different approach. It’s time to look out for kids and protect our communities from the rising gang violence and organized crime that’s hurting everyday families in B.C..” An NDP government will create a $100 million fund dedicated to helping keep young people out of gangs, with a boost to programs that get youth involved in their community. New Democrats will also im-
mediately create a dedicated RCMP anti-money laundering unit and put an end to hidden corporate ownership of real estate, to help crack down on tax evasion and fraud. “Young people who’ve been left behind need someone on their side. Preventing gang activity and tackling the housing crisis – those are the priorities of families here in Surrey and they need a government in Ottawa that takes them seriously,” said Singh. “We’re replacing empty talk with concrete action, because New Democrats are in it for you.” The NDP’s New Deal for People also gets re-
In 2017, the Liberal government in Québec passed Bill 62, banning the wearing of face coverings for anyone providing or receiving government services. At the time, the federal New Democratic Party under Thomas Mulcair’s leadership vigorously opposed this populist bill. As a result, the NDP suffered major electoral losses in a province where they had recently gained a historic foothold. Now the ruling Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) has passed the equally odious Bill 21, which forbids provincial employees in positions of authority – such as police, jail guards, judges, and teachers – from wearing any religious symbols. That law is now being challenged in court by the National Council of Canadian Muslims, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and hijab-wearing Ichrak Nourel Hak, a Université de Montréal student training to become a teacher. Under the new legislation she would not be allowed to teach school wearing her customary religious clothing. Bill 21 is a flagrant violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, in both the letter and spirit of the law. Québec Premier François Legault and his CAQ party cynically skirted the Charter by invoking the Notwithstanding Clause,
which gives a provincial government power to pass laws that violate the Constitution. Legault has gone on to demand that Québec candidates in the upcoming October federal election must agree not to be involved in any court challenges to Bill 21. Three of the five recognized federal party leaders have given in to this draconian demand: Conservative leader Andrew Scheer; Green leader Elizabeth May; and New Democratic leader Jagmeet Singh, a practicing Sikh who wears his faith’s traditional “five articles” including the turban and kirpan (a ceremonial dagger). They are all after Québec voters. Who gives a damn about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms? Not Scheer, Singh, or May. So, is Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau any better? Trudeau says he reserves the right to intervene, but first wants the ongoing court challenge to Bill 21 to run its course (which could take years). Trudeau, Scheer, Singh, and May have all expressed righteous opposition to Bill 21, but words are nowhere near enough. So far, they have all failed to walk the talk of unity in diversity and enlightened multiculturalism. They are more afraid of suffering the fate of former NDP leader Tom Mulcair who stood
against populist policies and discriminatory legislation. Trudeau’s position may be less blatantly hypocritical than that of his prime ministerial rivals, but it is nowhere near good enough to reassure Canada’s religiously visible minorities. And now he’s squirming out from under yet another scandal, thanks to a youthful history of playing “Mr. Dressup” with overtly racial overtones. In trying to minimize the damage those black-face antics inflicted on his clean image, he argues that he’s always advocated for minority rights. Well, not so much anymore. If he stands back and holds off on any intervening action until the current case against Bill 21 meanders its tortuous way through the courts, he and the rest of Canada stand to lose big-time, and with no recourse. But as PM, Trudeau has it in his power to act now. Within a year of Bill 21’s adoption, he could meet with the Governor General and request the withdrawal of royal assent. Sadly, it seems he has chosen not to do so for fear of losing too many Québec votes – a risky numbers-game that can only end badly for all. Let’s welcome the ethically unflinching Thomas Mulcair back into this unhappy
but do not want to distract from the important work of government in the meantime,” she said. “For that reason, I have decided to step away from my duties while the matter is resolved.” Sims said she would not make further comment on the advice of legal counsel, and the attorney general’s office referred questions to the province’s public prosecution service. I am confident that my name will be cleared but do not want to distract from the important work of government in the meantime A release issued Friday night by the BC Prosecution Service said that after a request from the RCMP Richard Peck, a senior lawyer in private practice in Vancouver, had been appointed as Special Prosecutor “to provide le-
gal advice in relation to an investigation into criminal wrongdoing involving the Minister of Citizens’ Services, Jinny Sims and others.” It is not known if the allegations about Sims’s personal email or the reference letters are the subject of the investigation that led her to resign from cabinet, and the RCMP could not be reached for further comment. In May, the information and privacy commissioner said he would not investigate an allegation that Sims used her personal email and other “non-government applications” to conduct government business because the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act does not “explicitly prohibit” the use of “personal applications” by public officials. Sims denied any wrongdoing. “While the Opposition continues to focus on gotcha politics, I follow the rules and use government accounts for government business and document government decisions appropriately,” she said in a statement reported by the Vancouver Sun. In the legislature in May, Liberal Shirley Bond asked Sims if she wrote sponsorship letters as a member of cabinet for individuals she did not know. Sims replied that letters were written on legislature letterhead.

New Democrats will safeguard the coast from the increased risk of oil spills, as a result of the high tanker traffic permitted by the Liberals, which would only be worsened by Big Oil-backed Conservatives and the Green Party that won’t rule out supporting them.

situation. Thankfully he has not changed, as demonstrated by this excerpt from a recent Toronto Sun article: “Freedom of religion shouldn’t depend on focus groups and polling. It’s a fundamental right, not a popularity contest. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is there to protect all of us.” Today, we are in an age of lesser, weaker, and short-sighted leaders – leaders unwilling to stand up for our treasured Charter of Rights and Freedoms, in case doing so might cost them votes. B.C. cabinet minister steps aside after RCMP begin investigation
The B.C. Liberals have accused Sims of writing letters to support visa applications for 10 Pakistani citizens who were on a security watch list VICTORIA:A British Columbia cabinet minister stepped aside Friday after Premier John Horgan said a special prosecutor has been appointed amid an RCMP investigation. In a three-paragraph statement, Horgan said he was informed of the investigation into Citizens’ Services Minister Jinny Sims by the attorney general. “We take any such investigation very seriously,” he said. No other information on the nature of the investigation was released. Sims said in a statement that she is not aware of the allegations that have been made against her. The B.C. Liberals have accused Sims of using personal emails to allegedly circumvent the province’s freedom of information laws and of writing letters to support visa applications for 10 Pakistani citizens who were on a security watch list.In her statement, Sims makes a reference to unspecified “previous public allegations” she has faced and said there is “no credibility” to them. “I am confident that my name will be cleared
“A number of letters were sent out with my electronic signature, and I did not see the final draft. I take responsibility for what happened. When I became aware of the issue, I immediately had a serious conversation with the staff to ensure that it would not happen again,” she said. In a statement, Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson said Horgan should explain why a special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate a cabinet minister. At a news conference in Vancouver, Wilkinson said the Liberals have raised concerns in the legislature for almost a year about Sims. “John Horgan did nothing about it and now it finally takes the police to step in to get John Horgan to act,” he said. Sims was first elected as the legislature member for Surrey-Panorama in the 2017 provincial election. Before getting into provincial politics, Sims was a New Democrat MP for the Metro Vancouver riding of NewtonNorth Delta. Selina Robinson, the minister of municipal affairs and housing, will temporarily assume Sims’s cabinet responsibilities. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 4, 2019. his article provides a summary of results for the general (all seats contested) elections to the House of Commons, the elected lower half of Canada’s federal bicameral legislative body, the Parliament of Canada. The number of seats has increased steadily over time, from 180 for the first election to the current total of 338. The current federal government structure was established in 1867 by the Constitution Act. For federal by-elections (for one or a few seats as a result of retirement, etc.) see List of federal by-elections in Canada. For the eight general elections of the Province of Canada held in 1843 to 1864 before confederation in 1867, see List of elections in the Province of Canada. There were also earlier elections in Canada, such as for the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada (held in 1792–1836, now part of Ontario) and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada (held in 1792–1834, now part of Quebec). Two political parties have dominated politics in Canada: the Liberal Party and the historic Conservative party (known as the Progressive Conservative Party from 1942 to 2003). If one regards the modern Conservative Party as the successor to the historic one, then these are the only two parties to have formed a government, although often as the lead party in a minority or coalition government with one or more smaller parties (the 1917 win was by a proconscription Unionist coalition of former Liberals and Conservatives). Although government has primarily been a two-party system, Canadian federal politics has been a multi-party affair since the 1920s, during which there was significant parliamentary presence of the Progressive Party and the United Farmers movement. They were supplanted by the Social Credit Party and the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in the 1930s. The CCF evolved into the New Democratic Party (NDP) in 1961. The Social Credit Party and the CCF/NDP won the third and fourth most seats between them from the 1930s, until the Social Credit Party failed to win any seats in the 1980 election. Since 1980, the NDP has remained a presence in the Canadian parliament, but the situation amongst other non-government parties has been more complex. The Progressive Conservative Party never recovered from its spectacular defeat in the 1993 election (when it went from being the majority government with 169 seats, to just two seats and the loss of official party status). Rightwing politics has since seen the rise and fall of the Reform Party and the Canadian Alliance, followed by the rise to government of the new Conservative Party. Further, in 1993 the separatist Bloc Québécois won seats for the first time. It has been a constant presence in parliament since then. The third, fourth, and fifth parties’ results are included in “Other” if the party did not win at least four seats in an election at some point in its history. Results for parties placing sixth or lower (as in the 1926 election) are also included in “Other”, as are Independent seats.
Liberal-Conservative Party (commonly known as the Conservative Party), led by Sir John A. Macdonald, is elected to form Canada’s first government, defeating the Liberal Party and its de facto leader George Brown. In Nova Scotia, Anti-Confederates under Joseph Howe win 17 of 19 seats after campaigning against confederation, but later sit with the Liberals.
2nd 1872 Conservatives under Prime Minister Macdonald are re-elected with a minority, defeating Liberals and their de facto leader Edward Blake.
3rd 1874
Liberals, led by Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie, retain power with a majority after having formed a government after the Conservatives under former Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald lost the confidence of the House in 1873. The Conservatives drop the word “Liberal” from “Liberal-Conservative Party” in 1873, but Macdonald and some other members continue to run under the original party name. First federal election by Secret ballot.
4th 1878
Conservative Party, led by Sir John A. Macdonald, defeat Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie’s Liberals, returning Macdonald to power with a second majority.
5th 1882

20th 1945
13th 1917
Unionist Party, a pro-conscription coalition of Conservatives and former Liberals, are elected with a majority under Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden. Both former Conservatives and former Liberals are appointed to the cabinet. The coalition defeats former Prime Minister Laurier’s anti-conscription Liberals in the most bitter campaign in Canadian history.
14th 1921
Liberals, led by William Lyon Mackenzie King, win a minority government, defeating Conservatives under Prime Minister Arthur Meighen. The Conservatives are reduced to third place in the House, but the Progressive Party under Thomas Crerar declines the title of official opposition so Meighen becomes opposition leader.
15th 1925
Prime Minister Mackenzie King’s Liberals hold on to power with a minority with the help of Progressives under Robert Forke, despite former Prime Minister Meighen’s Conservatives winning more seats. Labour Party leader and future CCF leader J.S. Woodsworth bargains his votes in the House to the Liberals in exchange for a promise to enact an old age pension plan. The Progressives soon withdraw support from the scandal-plagued Liberals but also refuse to support the Conservatives. The Governor General controversially gives Meighen the Prime Minister’s post in the King-Byng Affair, but the Conservatives soon fall in a non-confidence vote.
Liberals, led by Prime Minister Mackenzie King, are re-elected with a minority, defeating the newly renamed Progressive Conservatives, led by John Bracken. Foreshadowing the Bloc Québécois, Bloc populaire Canadien wins two seats in Quebec on an anti-conscription and Quebec nationalism platform; future Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and future mayor of Montreal Jean Drapeau are young party members.

16th 1926 Liberals, led by Mackenzie King, defeat former Prime Minister Meighen’s Conservatives, winning a minority supported by the eight Liberal-Progressives under Forke. United Farmers parties take 12 seats and Labour four, giving Canada a rare Parliament with six parties in the House each with four or more seats.
17th 1930
Conservatives, led by R.B. Bennett, win a majority, defeating Liberals under former Prime Minister Mackenzie King.
Liberals, led by Prime Minister Trudeau, defeat Stanfields’s Progressive Conservatives with a majority.
31st 1979
Progressive Conservatives, led by Joe Clark, defeat Liberals, led by Prime Minister Trudeau, and win a minority, despite winning a significantly smaller share of the vote than the Liberals. The PCs win the most votes in seven provinces, but the Liberals capture an enormous lead in Quebec. Ed Broadbent makes his debut as leader of the NDP, which wins 10 more seats than in 1974 in a Parliament enlarged by 18 seats.
32nd 1980
Liberals, led by former Prime Minister Trudeau, defeat Progressive Conservatives, led by Prime Minister Clark. Social Credit fades into history after an almost unbroken 45-year run, leaving Canada with a threeparty system.
34th 1988
Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Mulroney is re-elected with a second majority, contending with a much stronger performance from former Liberal Prime Minister Turner and a strong third-party showing from Broadbent’s New Democrats, who score that party’s third best result ever.

party with the Progressive Conservatives. Bloc Québécois experiences a revival due to the Liberal sponsorship scandal. Jack Layton’s NDP comes one seat short of being able to guarantee the survival of Martin’s government.
39th 2006
Conservatives, led by Stephen Harper, win a minority, defeating Prime Minister Martin’s Liberals. BQ keeps most of its seats and NDP improves its fourth-place position.
40th 2008
33rd 1984

24th 1958
18th 1935
Liberals, led by Mackenzie King, defeat Prime Minister Bennett’s Conservatives with a majority. The new Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) from the West, under Woodsworth, wins seven seats on a platform of social reform. The new Social Credit Party under John Blackmore, also from the West, wins 17 seats with its platform of monetary reform. Progressive Party and United Farmers of Alberta pass into the history books.
30th 1974
Progressive Conservatives, led by John Diefenbaker, defeat Liberals led by Prime Minister St-Laurent with an upset minority victory.
7th 1891
Conservatives, led by Prime Minister Macdonald, are re-elected with a fifth majority, in Macdonald’s final election before his death shortly after. Macdonald defeated rookie Liberal opposition leader Wilfrid Laurier.
17
Liberals, led by Jean Chrétien, win a majority and soundly defeat Progressive Conservatives, led by new Prime Minister Kim Campbell, who are left in fifth place with just two seats, their worst ever showing. The separatist Bloc Québécois under ex-Mulroney cabinet minister Lucien Bouchard becomes the official opposition, and the right-wing Reform Party, led by Preston Manning, becomes the third party. Audrey McLaughlin’s New Democrats also post their worst ever results with just nine seats. The election marks the end of the predominantly three-party system of the Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, and NDP.
36th 1997
Liberals, led by Prime Minister Chrétien, are re-elected with a second majority. Manning’s Reform Party becomes the official opposition. Progressive Conservatives under Jean Charest win nearly as many votes as Reform, but only one-third the seats.
Conservatives, led by Prime Minister Harper, win a second minority, defeating Stéphane Dion’s Liberals by larger margins than in 2006. BQ support is steady and NDP picks up several Liberal seats. Green Party under new leader Elizabeth May continues its growth, winning 6.78% of the national vote on its environmentally conscious platform, but again fails to win any seats.
41st 2011
Conservatives, under Prime Minister Harper win a majority of seats. For the first time the NDP, led by Layton, becomes the Official Opposition, taking advantage of the collapse of BQ in Quebec and Liberals in Ontario. The leaders of both defeated parties, respectively, Gilles Duceppe and Michael Ignatieff lost their seats and resigned. The Green Party campaign focused on and won its first ever seat, letting overall support collapse to year 2000 levels.
42nd 2015
Liberals under Justin Trudeau win a majority of seats. Conservatives become the official opposition. Stephen Harper resigns. Quebec drops their overwhelming support for the NDP following the 2011 election, and instead is largely divided, with the Liberals seizing most of the available seats. This split in Quebec reduces the NDP under Thomas Mulcair back to their standing as a third party, while the Bloc Quebecois under Gilles Duceppe regains some of the ridings lost in 2011, despite Duceppe again failing to win his riding. Green Party leader Elizabeth May retains her seat.
43rd Oct 21, 2019
37th 2000
Liberals, led by Prime Minister Chrétien, are re-elected with a third majority, defeating Stockwell Day’s Canadian Alliance, the unsuccessful attempt to unite the Reform Party and the Progressive Conservatives. Progressive Conservatives, led by former Prime Minister Joe Clark, barely keep official party status in the House with the minimum 12 seats.
38th 2004
Liberals are re-elected under new Prime Minister Paul Martin to a minority government. They defeat the new Conservative Party, led by Stephen Harper, ex-leader of the Canadian Alliance, who merged that

Justin Trudeau
ustin Trudeau is the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and Canada’s 23rd Prime Minister. Justin’s vision of Canada is a country where everyone has a real and fair chance to succeed. His experiences as a teacher, father, leader, and advocate for youth have shaped his dedication to serving Canadians – and his commitment to make Canada a place where everyone has the opportunities they need to thrive.
LIBERAL LEADERSHIP Justin was elected Leader of the Liberal Party in April 2013. His leadership campaign focused on building a new, truly national movement of progressive Canadians, bringing hundreds of thousands of Canadians into politics, most for the first time. He worked closely with his team to build a plan to create jobs, grow the economy, and strengthen the middle class. With Justin’s leadership, the Liberal plan emphasized economic opportunity for everyone, respect for and promotion of equality and diversity, and strong action to address climate change and the environment. PRIME MINISTER Justin led his party to a historic victory, winning a majority government with seats in every province and territory across the country. He was sworn in on November 4, 2015. As Prime Minister, Justin works hard every day to build an economy that works for the middle class and people working hard to join it. One of the Liberal government’s first actions was to cut taxes for the middle class, while asking the wealthiest Canadians to pay a bit more. Under Justin’s leadership, the Liberal government strengthened the Canada Pension Plan to make sure seniors have the support they deserve, and introduced the Canada Child Benefit, putting more money in the pockets of nine out of ten families. He chose to invest in people instead of cutting their services. Canadians have seen the results: more than a million new jobs created since 2015, unemployment at its lowest since the 1970s, and nearly a million people lifted out of poverty – including 300,000 children. Justin’s team has also taken ambitious steps to fight the climate crisis and protect the environment, from making historic investments in conservation, to creating a national Oceans Protection Plan, to putting a price on the pollution that causes climate change. Today, Justin continues to fight for workers, families, and the middle class – and make sure all Canadians can share in a more prosperous future. In a rapidly changing world, where rising populism and growing inequality threaten to take us backward, Justin is determined to keep Canada moving forward. Justin is married to Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. They are the proud parents of Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien.

Muslim Youth Centre 19th Annual Fundraising Dinner
by: Salma Husain “For those who believe and do good deeds, these are the dwellers of the Paradise, in it they shall abide.” (The Holy Quraan: Chapter 2: Verse 82). What a spectacular event! The Muslim Youth Centre (MYC) held its 19th Annual Fundraising Dinner on Saturday, October 5, to a jam-packed crowd. It was held at the Crystal At York Banquet Hall in Surrey,. The Program started with a Welcome address and outline of the Program done by the President of MYC, Br. Kareem Husain. The Master of Ceremonies Br. Ahmed Kandel introduced the Quraan Reciter, Br. Amir Malek who did a beautiful recitation of the Quran. Sukh Dhaliwal, MP (Surrey - Newton) and Bruce Ralston, MLA (Surrey - Walley) spoke about the importance of supporting the MYC to keep a safe and friendly place for the Youth. Then, the audience took part in a fun Knowledge question and answer game done by the Youth; Sister
Jannat, Br. Suhaib, Br. Faisal and Br. Yusuf; followed, by the evening prayer. Voices of Jannah, a local Youth Group led by Sister Rahma had the audience stand and recite the Canadian National Anthem. The group (ages 6-14 years old) launched 4 years ago with the goal of providing youngsters with opportunities to learn about their Muslim identities, and gain confidence through it. They showcased their talent with a special performance on the Nasheed ‘Sing Children of the World’ by Dawud Wharsnby, to promote the diversity of our beautiful religion and talked about ‘How they are Proud to be a Canadian Muslim’; followed by a skit. There was a wonderful taekwondo performance presented by the Youth of MYC led by Black Belt Instructors Brother Adam Ishmail and Sister Alia Ishmail. The hard work and dedication of the Youth were truly inspiring with them displaying poise and discipline. Taekwondo classes are held at the MYC every
Saturday. The Guest Speaker was Imam Br, Shujaat Ali. He made an impassioned speech how the MYC is the only Centre in the lower mainland that offers a unique service for the Youth where sports and Islamic studies are always at the forefront. After this, the Fundraising took place where over $15,000 was raised. Thank you to everyone who donated. A fun Giveaway was played with the entire audience to close off the program. There was an intense competition with the audience where audience members were called on stage and guessed items until one winner prevailed; Sister Saffiya Salim. Thank you to everyone who participated in the event and the winners. The President concluded the Program with a Vote of Thanks and requested everyone to lend their continuous support to the MYC. Thank you to the vendors: Rahihan Ferdous of Modesty Hijab and Fashion; Khadijah Ali who had artisan soaps and

How a Mother of Four Went from Being Broke to Being a Breadwinner Imagine it’s the end of the month and you don’t have the money to pay the next month’s rent. This was the plight of a woman who was disadvantaged yet resilient. Sara Ahmed, a 40-year-old mother of four lives with her husband, Akram. She assumed the role of the head of the household many years ago when her husband became disabled. She is not only a homemaker but is also tasked with managing the family’s finances. Though her husband receives financial support as part of the B.C. disability assistance program, her family fell on hard times a few months ago when she was unable to pay her rent or put food on the table for her four kids. Sara’s kids are alone in this struggle. Some estimates suggest that one in five kids in British Columbia live below the poverty line.

Greta has demonstrated confidence in speaking ‘truth’ to power with her defiant condemnation of world leaders by saying: “you can talk about is money and Fairy tales of eternal economic growth, “How dare you?”. With no extended family around to fall back on, Sara was left with very few options. She went to the local mosque to seek help and was given financial aid that provided urgent relief. After some time, due to limited resources the mosque had to turn Sara away. That’s when she came to the Muslim Food Bank. When Sara Ahmed first visited the Muslim Food Bank to register as a client, the intake worker categorized her as high-priority so her case was given to senior case-worker Hiba Ali. Hiba has worked through numerous cases dealing with low-income families before. In her first encounter with Hiba, Sara didn’t beat around the bush. She said, “I need money!” Hiba asked her if she worked but Sara responded saying she would but she feared losing the only source of income her family had—the disability assistance. Hiba thought that dinging someone for filthy freedom. This world is about Creator and HIS ‘Legislated Blue Print Law’. Everything else is just human staged drama that we enjoy no doubt. Flu (influenza): Prevention and risks
H
ow the flu spreads? The flu is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs. It is caused mainly by 2 types of viruses: Influenza A Influenza B The flu spreads very easily from person to person. Even before you notice symptoms, you may spread the virus to others. If you have the virus, you can spread it by: Talking Sneezing Coughing These actions release tiny droplets that contain the flu virus into the air. You can become infected if these droplets land on your: Eyes Nose Mouth Infection can also happen if you touch any of these body parts after touching surfaces contaminated by infected droplets. Common contaminated surfaces include: Phones Poorknobs Someone’s hands Television remotes Preventing the flu The flu shot is safe and is the best way to pre-
vent the flu. You cannot get the flu from the flu shot. Most people do not have any side effects. Severe reactions are very rare. Everyone 6 months and older should get the flu shot. Getting a flu shot is a simple action that can save lives by: Preventing you from getting very sick Protecting you if you are exposed to the virus helping protect other people because you are less likely to spread the virus In addition to getting the flu shot, you can also protect yourself and those around you by: Not touching your face Washing your hands often coughing and sneezing into the bend of your arm, not into your hand cleaning and disinfecting surfaces that a lot of people touch, such as: Phones Poorknobs Television remotes If you do get sick, stay home. Avoid close contact with other people until you feel well enough to get back to your usual day-to-day activities. This will help prevent the spread of the flu. When the flu is a risk In Canada your risk of getting the flu is higher in the: Late fall Winter Your risk is lower the rest of the year. Who is most at risk Everyone is at risk of getting the flu. The flu is among the 10 leading causes of death in Canada. Each year in Canada, the flu causes an estimated: 12,200 hospital stays
3,500 deaths Some people are at a higher risk of flu-related complications. These include: People with health conditions; These conditions can affect a person’s immune system and can make it harder to fight off infections. Getting the flu can also worsen these pre-existing conditions such as: cancer and other immune compromising conditions Diabetes Heart disease Lung disease Anemia Obesity Kidney disease neurologic or neurodevelopment conditions children up to 18 years of age undergoing treatment for long periods with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) People 65 years and older; The immune system changes with age and this can make it harder for the body to fight off infections. People over the age of 65 are also more likely to have health conditions which can worsen if they get the flu. People who live in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities; The flu spreads quickly, especially in communal spaces. Residents are also more likely to have health conditions which can worsen if they get the flu. Children under 5 years of age; Because of their age, their immune system is still building immunity to fight off serious infections. Pregnant women; During pregnancy, the body goes through many changes that can affect the immune system, heart and lungs. These changes can make it harder for the body to fight off infections.
cause their breast cancer was detected and treated early. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that women: • Have a mammogram every 2 years if you are between the ages of 50 and 69. If you are between the ages of 40 and 49, discuss your risk of breast cancer and the benefits and risks of mammography with your doctor; • Have a clinical breast examination by a trained health professional at least every two years if you are between 40-69; • If you are 70 or older, talk to your doctor about a screening program for you; • Talk to your doctors about any changes. There is no single cause of breast cancer but there are certain factors that may appear to elevate the risk. These include: • Age – Risk of diagnosis increases as a person ages • Personal history – If a person has previously battled the disease • Family history – Especially if a mother, sister or daughter has encountered breast cancer • Family history of ovarian cancer • Taking hormone replacement therapy for more than five years• Dense breast tissue • Other possible risk factors – Poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and obesity Sometimes, women develop breast cancer without any of these risk factors. A lot of women affected by breast cancer don’t have a family history of the disease. Even more surprising, some women have risk factors and never encounter the disease. Unfortunately, because of this uncertainty, early detection means a lot. Health professionals recommend that you see them if you find any changes with your breasts such as: • Size and shape • If you find a lump on your breast or a lump in your armpit area • Skin changes on your breast (such as peeling) • Physical changes you find in the appearance of the nipple Here are 9 ways to change your life:
1. Eat Fruit You can’t go wrong with this – almost all dietary advice comes down to the single instruction to eat more fruit and veg. Diet is thought to be a key factor in one in four cancer deaths – and animal fat in the diet is the suspect ingredient in breast cancer. The Japanese, who eat a diet of fish, rice and vegetables that is extremely low in animal fat, also have low rates of breast cancer. A high-fat diet increases the levels of the female hormone oestrogen in the blood, which encourages the growth of cancer cells. In populations with a high-fat diet, women tend to start their periods earlier and reach menopause later so they are exposed to high levels of oestrogen for longer, increasing their risk of breast cancer. Studies into what effect eating fruit and vegetables has on breast cancer have produced mixed results. One study found that, when combined with taking exercise, the results were dramatic. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology last June, it showed that women who ate their five portions a day and walked briskly for at least 30 minutes halved their risk of breast cancer. 2. Walk It is enjoyable, simple and requires no equipment. Walking is good for all aspects of physical and mental health – and cancer is no exception. Brisk walking (or other exercise) for 30 minutes a day, five times a week, is all that’s needed. Currently only one in four women manages this. If all women did, Cancer Research UK estimates it would prevent 1,400 cases a year. Three large studies in Italy and the US showed that inactivity caused 11 per cent of cases of breast cancer. Exercise works best before the menopause, but it is effective afterwards, too. It is thought to alter oestrogen metabolism, resulting in a weaker version being made. 3. Avoid HRT Hormone replacement therapy is seen as the principal avoidable risk for breast cancer. At the height of its popularity, in 2002, an estimated two million women were taking
Women who get the flu shot during pregnancy pass on immunity to their baby. This is especially important, as babies younger than 6 months can’t get vaccinated against the flu. Getting your flu shot can help protect your baby from the flu after birth. Indigenous peoples; There is a higher risk of flu-related complications and/or hospitalization for Indigenous peoples. This is a result of multiple factors, including a high occurrence of chronic health conditions, reduced access to health care, and other social and environmental factors. Some people are more likely to spread the flu to those at high risk of complications. They include: Caregivers Child care providers Healthcare providers family and other household members those who provide services in closed or relatively closed settings to people at high risk, such as crew on a ship It’s flu season. Stop the spread of the flu Some risks are worth it. The flu is not. Source:www.canada.ca/en/public-health
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
O
ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada. Each year in Canada, October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Canadian females, affecting thousands of women and their families each year. In 2008, an estimated 22,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die of it. One in nine women is expected to develop breast cancer - with the risk increasing significantly after the age of 50. One in 28 will die from the disease. Although, since the mid-1990s, the incidence of cancer and death has declined, it continues to be a life-threatening issue for thousands of Canadian women. The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) continues to encourage its 340,000 members to take an active part in the fight to end this disease. An estimated 170 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 50 will die of it. Breast cancer death rates have declined by 25% since 1986. Incidence and death rates for breast cancer have declined since 1969 in women aged 20-39. Survival has been improving gradually. Today survival ranges between 87% and 89% for women aged 40 and older. For women under 40, survival is 81%, excluding Quebec. What you can do Many women are alive and well today be-
HRT in the UK, and millions more worldwide. Tens of thousands of women will have developed breast cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer (of the lining of the womb) as a result. Overall, women currently taking HRT are 63 per cent more likely to develop these three cancers than those who are not. Earlier hopes that these risks would be counterbalanced by a reduction in heart disease have not been borne out. Gynecologists recommend that women who wish to use it to ease the symptoms of the menopause do so for as short a time as possible. 4. Get screened Women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest possible stage have a nine in 10 chance of a successful recovery. This is the rationale for screening – to detect a tumour by mammography when it is still too small to feel. Women aged 50 to 70 are invited for screening every three years – shortly to be extended to ages 47 to 73. It is estimated that the scheme saves 1,400 lives a years in England – one life for every 500 women screened. However, there is a downside in the shape of false alarms. Screening picks up abnormalities in the breast that look like cancer but turn out not to be. Several thousand women each year suffer the anxiety and discomfort of being recalled for further tests and undergoing biopsies of the breast to check for cancer – before being given the all-clear. Screening is now more accurate, since two views of the breast are taken, reducing the chances of cancers being missed. 4. Give birth Having children, especially before the age of 30, helps protect against breast cancer. It is down to those hormones, again. Over the last century, economic progress has led to delayed childbirth and smaller families as women with their own careers have sought to balance the demands of work and home. But researchers estimate that delaying childbearing increases the risk of breast cancer by 3 per cent for each year of delay.

NAB’s Shame
T
HE chairman of the National Accountability Bureau, retired Justice Javed Iqbal, has moved with unseemly speed after it emerged that top industry leaders had complained to the army chief about the bureau’s high-handedness. Within days, he took to the airwaves to announce that NAB would not be taking up certain cases involving businesses, particularly if they were linked to tax evasion or loan default, and that he would let the bodies responsible for dealing with these issues proceed on the matter instead. Mr Iqbal also
expressed alarm upon learning that industry leaders had complained about his bureau to the army chief; he sought to create an impression that only one individual did so. However, reports from those who were at the meeting are clear that almost all those who attended strongly criticised NAB for operating far beyond its mandate, and certainly its capabilities. The chairman’s response betrays a certain panic. This is not for the first time that the accountability bureau has been publicly assailed for its lack of capacity and overweening ambition to be the arbiter in all matters, including those that it has no business with. But now that the army chief has been brought into the picture, the NAB chairman has moved suddenly and offered certain carveouts in his field of operation, saying those under him would not deal with those cases. Recently, two separate regulatory bodies
— Nepra and the SECP — openly said that their operations were being adversely impacted by NAB whose officials are often accused of having a very limited understanding of the complex nature of the deals they want to investigate. Mr Iqbal seems to have been impervious to this observation that is indicative of his bureau’s overreach. The NAB chairman’s announcement that the bureau would refrain from pursuing cases involving businessmen has cast doubt on his own mandate. He is supposed to, and has repeatedly said that he does, operate only as per the law. So, how does the law allow him to revise his responsibilities — which is effectively what he intends to do? In the aftermath of his remarks, all other actions taken by the bureau will look even more like a witch-hunt, because the only people left to go after now — which NAB has already been doing quite assiduously
designated as Pink Day for breast cancer awareness. “It’s really a good victory,” said Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka. “All the players were bonded, that was the key to our success. “There are no extraordinary players here — they’re all talented, but the unity was the secret. If we play smart cricket, there’s always a possibility to win.” Oshada Fernando had struck a brilliant 48ball 78 with three sixes and eight boundaries — the highest by a Sri Lankan player on T20I debut — to lift Sri Lanka to 147-7 in their 20 overs. Jehan Mubarak and Danushka Gunathilaka — who both scored 46 each — had held the previous record for most runs on a Twenty20 debut for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s victory was their first-ever Twenty20 series whitewash and was
achieved despite missing 10 of their top players, including regular T20 skipper Lasith Malinga, who refused to tour Pakistan over security fears. However their absences did not hurt Sri Lanka as they staged a remarkable comeback after losing the oneday series 2-0 by winning the first two matches of the T20 series by 64 and 35 runs respectively. Before this, Pakistan’s only Twenty20 whitewash defeat was at the hands of England in the United Arab Emirates in 2015. “I think we recovered well in the bowling, but we needed another good partnership in the middle but we were subdued; we didn’t express ourselves throughout this series,” said captain Sarfaraz. Pakistan’s start was once again disastrous as they lost aggressive opener Fakhar Zaman off the first ball of their innings, bowled by Kasun Rajitha for nought. Babar Azam (32-ball 27) and Sohail added 76 for the second wicket but Sri Lanka applied the brakes as boundaries dried up. Iftikhar Ahmed hit a six and a boundary in
— are bureaucrats and the opposition politicians, while the chairman appears to be calling the shots himself. With so many of NAB’s actions — including arrests on charges that have yet to be substantiated — already controversial, it would have been much better had Mr Iqbal decided to work towards establishing NAB’s credentials as an independent and fair accountability body that is capable of investigating suspected corruption across the board in a professional manner. Instead, NAB’s reputation stands thoroughly compromised, and its claims of conducting a robust accountability drive sound hollow. Source:dawn.com
Hasaranga, Fernando star as Sri Lanka whitewash number one Pakistan in T20 series
Inexperienced Sri Lanka completed a 3-0 clean-sweep in their Twenty20 series with world number one Pakistan on Wednesday with a 13-run victory in Lahore. Chasing a modest 148-run target, Pakistan were on course for victory with Haris Sohail’s 50-ball 52 with four boundaries and a six but leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga turned the tables with 3-21 to restrict the hosts to 134-6 in 20 overs. Hasaranga had Sohail stumped in the 16th over and then dismissed Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed (16-ball 17) in the 18th to give Sri Lanka victory on a match day

5. Breast-feed Breast-feeding protects against breast cancer, as well as being best for the baby. But smaller families and the rise in the number of working mothers has meant the time spent breast-feeding has reduced. Breastfeeding for six months reduces the risk, experts say. Yet many women never get that far. In England, 77 per cent of mothers start breast-feeding but more than a third switch to bottle-feeding in the first six weeks. 6. Lose weight Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer – but only after the menopause. A large European study called Epic found postmenopausal women who were obese had a 31 per cent higher risk of breast cancer than women with a healthy weight. Reducing obesity could save 1,800 cases of breast cancer a year. Obesity increases the risk of other cancers including those of the bowel, womb, kidney and oesophagus. Overall it is estimated that 7. per cent of cancers in women and 3 per cent in men are due to being obese or overweight. In the UK, 12,000 people might avoid getting cancer each year if they maintained a healthy body weight. 7. Get a stressful job (really) A 2005 Danish study published in the Brit-

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month ish Medical Journal found high levels of daily stress reduced the risk of the disease by 40 per cent. The researchers suggest that stress may be beneficial by reducing levels of oestrogen. They draw a distinction between daily stress of the sort experienced by women in high-pressure jobs and stressful life events such as bereavement, which have previously been linked with an increase in cancer. Stress can have other damaging effects, too – on the heart, for example, and by increasing the risk of compensatory behaviour. 8. Live somewhere clean It has long been claimed that exposure to pollutants used in the manufacture of products from plastics to cosmetics has an “endocrine disrupting” effect. A report from the World Wide Fund for Nature last year claimed their role in breast cancer had been neglected. It pointed out that less than half of new breast cancer cases can be explained by genetic and lifestyle factors and chemicals in the environment could be the missing link. Other studies have contradicted this suggestion and experts point out that compared with the natural levels of oestrogen in a wom-
an’s blood, the level of the chemicals is too small to have significant impact. Still, moving to an unpolluted region is unlikely to do harm and could encourage tother beneficial changes, such as eating healthily, exercising more, and drinking less. Don’t be nervous or anxious about finding changes in your breasts. Often these changes may not be related to cancer – but it’s worthwhile to tell your doctor as soon as possible New results from breast cancer clinical trial show non-breast cancer related causes account for most deaths. New findings from a landmark breast cancer clinical trial involving the drug letrozole show that, in this group of patients, women were more likely to die from non-breast cancer-related causes than from breast cancer-related causes. The research team found that non-breast cancer related causes accounted for 60% of deaths. The top causes of death included: cardiovascular disease including stroke (15%), other malignancies (15%), infection (6%), multiple causes (5%), and non-cardiovascular organ failure (4%). The results were particularly striking for older women. Among

his 17 but targets of 37 off the last two overs and 28 in the last were beyond Pakistan. Earlier, Sri Lanka rode on a brilliant maiden half century by Fernando, who held the innings together after Sri Lanka lost two wickets for 28 runs in four overs. They then slumped to 58-4 with Bhanuka Rajapaksa, the star of the second match, falling for just three. Fernando repaired the damage with a fighting 76-run stand for the fifth wicket with Shanaka, who made 12. Pakistan were once again sloppy in the field, dropping four catches while Sarfaraz spurned a stumping chance behind the wicket. Paceman Mohammad Amir, who went wicket-less in the first two matches, finished with 3-27. Source:dawn.com women aged 70 years or older, non-breast cancer-related causes accounted for 72% of deaths. The new results are published in the February 12 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The original study results were first published in The New England Journal of Medicine in October 2003 and involved 5,170 post-menopausal breast cancer survivors with a median age of 62 years (range 32 to 94 years). It determined that women who took letrozole for up to five years following 5 years of tamoxifen therapy experienced a significantly reduced risk of cancer recurrence. The clinical trial was coordinated by the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials group and was funded in part by the Canadian Cancer Society. Routine use of mammography and improved treatment for breast cancer will mean that more women will survive breast cancer at older ages, at which time they might have a higher risk of death from causes other than breast cancer, says Dr Judith-Anne Chapman, lead author of the study. “The study findings show that we are successfully treating women with breast cancer. However, the study also underscores the need to pay more attention especially to older women and the potential for death from other causes,” Dr Chapman says. volunteer or donating to your organization, the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society (usually referred to as Muslim Food Bank) at www.muslimfoodbank.com/donate. 24 Zaad- Ul- Hujjaj Foundation successfully completes its third year of operations
By Isra Khan his past year, the Zaad- Ul- Hujjaj Foundation underwent a few new initiatives that included offering several free online quran classes to Muslim women. The aim was to make it easier for them to recite their Quran during Hajj and Umrah as well as for their daily life. Due to the help of a growing number of volunteers, the foundation has been able to teach more than a hundred women who have benefited greatly from the wide variety of classes offered as well as the number of languages that they are conducted in. These include but are not limited to English, Urdu, Pashto, Japanese and Tagalog.

he foundation has also expanded its operations to include akistan. Specifically, to allow low income scholars to go perform Hajj and Ramadan Umrah so that they can not only fulfil a required pillar of islam but also use their Islamic knowledge to help other Hujajj perform pilgrimage properly as it was performed by the prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H. This project is headed by Hafiza Saima Khan and president of the Pakistani chapter, Hafiz Ajwaid Ubaid who is the principle of the Hifz department of Jamia Ashrafia, Lahore. It is due to their expertise that Zaad- Ul- Hujjaj was able to send their first Pakistani scholar to perform Hajj this past August. Lastly, the foundation created a meal program aimed at opening the fasts of those performing pilgrimage in Makkah and Medina during the holy month of Ramadan. The benefits of doing so are numerous including actually receiving the same rewards as the person who is fasting. For more information on any of these programs or to donate, please visit our website info@zaadulhujjaj.org or contact Hafiza Saima Khan at 7788625560 or Hafiz Ajwad Ubaid at 0326889992
