These B.C. ridings saw the biggest federal election voter turnout — we asked why By Alex McKeenStar Vancouver vators for voters to get to the polls politics professor at the University the high numbers in North Van-

V

VANCOUVER— oter turnout slouched in Monday’s federal election compared to 2015, but climate change and union volunteers may have propped up the numbers in British Columbia hot spots. Overall voter turnout for Canada’s 43rd general election slid just below two-thirds of eligible voters at 65.95 per cent, more than a twopoint drop from the 2015 turnout. In B.C., the difference was greater — turnout fell to 65.02 per cent, compared to 70 per cent in 2015. But the turnout was far from uniform across the province. The lowest was in Richmond Centre, with just more than half of registered voters turning up to the polls. The highest was in Saanich—Gulf Islands, the riding represented by Green Party leader Elizabeth May, where 73 per cent of voters cast a ballot. “Elizabeth May’s riding was also the highest last time around,” said Mario Canseco, a president of polling company Research Co. “It’s a group of people who know what they like, who vote for it and take nothing for granted.” Canseco’s exit polling, based on a survey of 803 adults who voted in the 43rd election weighted to census figures (margin of error: plus or minus 3.5 per cent 19 times out of 20), found that the biggest moti-

were ideas and issues the parties differed on. Canseco said climate change was likely the ballot-box issue for people in Saanich—Gulf islands and other Vancouver Island ridings, all seven of which had higher than average voter turnout. “It’s not that they became engaged in this after Greta Thunberg crossed the Atlantic,” he said. “They were already there.” Local volunteers for May told Star Vancouver earlier this month that the climate crisis was their main motivation for working long hours on the campaign. “Sometimes I reunite her with her dog at 11 o’clock at night,” said Shelagh Levey, a retired schoolteacher who worked as a volunteer for May during the campaign, helping with canvassing and also looking after May’s dog, Xo. Levey explained that her dedication to May came from feeling “it’s now or never” for Canadian governments to begin treating climate change as the serious issue it is. Demographics — Vancouver Island has a higher average age than other parts of the province — also play a role in the high turnout there, since older Canadians are more likely to vote. “The ridings at the high end tend to be ridings with older populations,” said Richard Johnston, a Canadian

of British Columbia. “Independent of everything else, individuals become more likely to turn out as they get older.” Higher education levels, and lower proportions of new immigrants also tend to correspond to higher turnout, Johnston said. All factors could be applied to ridings on the island. Johnston said the strong union movement on the Vancouver Island — with public sector unions concentrated in Victoria and private sector union members distributed throughout the island’s forestry and mill towns — also plays a role. “We devalue the union movement, but the healthiest democracies in the world have strong union movements,” Johnston said. “It’s part of the story of getting people to the ballot boxes.” Declining union membership, along with declining organizational power of the Catholic Church, can both explain an overall drop in Canada’s voter turnout since the 1940s. Those institutions, he said, as well as the large, underemployed female population available to volunteer, and the traceability of people who lived in single family homes have been key in the past in going door-to-door to canvass and get out the vote. Party volunteers also still play a role in voter turnout. Canseco said

couver may have been the product of a get-out-the-vote effort by the Liberals. “The Liberals wanted to fight to keep the ministers that they have,” he said. “I think it speaks a little bit about the effort to get out the vote in places where they actually need it.” In North Vancouver, that meant getting out the vote for fisheries and oceans minister Jonathan Wilkinson. On the other hand, Vancouver South, where defence minister Harjit Sajjan held onto his seat, had the fifth lowest turnout of any riding in the province. Canseco saw this as voters responding with ambivalence to campaigns where the main focus was on negative messaging. The Conservatives, for example, tried to court outer-suburban voters with negative messages about Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax — a strategy that seems to have worked in some places, but may not have been enough to inspire large swaths of voters to get out to the polls in the rain. Hillary Tam, who identified herself as a millennial voter, ventured out in the pouring rain to vote in Vancouver South Monday evening. She said there were few valid excuses not to cast a ballot.

‘Tea with Tamara’!

By: Gulshan Alani It was most enjoyable tea time with a pleasant friendly young lady Tamara Taggart a former television news Anchor, a community leader-activist, and Veteran broadcaster, running for the Liberals, and the Team Trudeau candidate, in the riding of Vancouver Kingsway, she was in fact invited at the Masjid Ul Haqq (on 12th) by Sr. Zubeda Khairati and her group of women. It was such an honor meeting Tamara in person and was a wonderful expe-

rience, quite different than seeing her on TV screen as an anchor for years. Tamara, a wife and a Mother well known for her advocacy on health care, and her well known volunteer work raising millions of dollars for health care, cancer research and people living with disabilities. It was also wonderful experience to listen to her honest opinions of human concerns and at the same time Sisters from the audience could put forward their opinions, concerns and questions face to face with her. She very eloquently discussed the political matters for the coming election. She managed to explain the problematic issues of Environment,

Children’s education, Student’s loan, Senior’s and disabled’s rights for sufficient comfort by better health care, better services for people with Mental health problem etc. Which of course is also discussed by NDP, Green party, and Conservative. She also suggested that women should take part and participate in all the political issues, support and have more solidarity with all the women, as there aren’t enough female running the political agenda. Yes true, perhaps when we have a female President or P. M. the world would be a different better world without Wars, Guns and bombs.

Foreign diplomats taken to Neelum Valley to debunk Indian army claim of destroying ‘terror launch pads’

A team of foreign diplomats posted in Pakistan were taken to the Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to witness firsthand whether the Indian army had “smashed four terror launch pads” there early Sunday, Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal said in a tweet on Tuesday. The diplomats were taken to the Nauseri, Shahkot and Jura sectors near the Line of Control (LoC), as well as the Nausada village, which has suffered severe damage in at-

tacks by Indian troops. The trip was arranged so they can verify for themselves the claims made by Indian army chief Gen Bipin Rawat. Inter-Services Public Relations Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor briefed the diplomats and media persons about the situation in the area. The visitors were also shown remains of the artillery shells that allegedly fired by the Indian troops from across the LoC. DG ISPR said that in 2018, there were 3,038 Indian ceasefire violations and 58 civilians were martyred while 319 were injured. In 2019, so far there have been 2,608 ceasefire violations due to which 44 civilians have been martyred and 230 injured. He said the difference between the Pakistan Army and Indian army was that the former follows military norms and only targets Indian posts. Source: www.dawn.com/news

PM Imran says govt will support joint investment projects under CPEC

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said that the government will support joint investment projects involving companies from Pakistan and China under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the 1,320-megawatt China Hub Power Generation Plant in Balochistan, the prime minister said that he wanted to see the pattern of joint projects continue under CPEC. “I am happy that under CPEC, the first joint project [is being inaugurated]. We want to see the pattern continue,” the premier said, adding that big Chinese companies want to come to Pakistan.“The joint projects are welcome; the government will fully support [such projects],” he said, requesting the managers of the newly built power plant to consume at least 20 per cent coal from the Thar coal reserves. The project “will help us reduce the Current Account Deficit (CAD),” he added. Prime Minister Imran said that there was a huge CAD when the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) assumed power, and held the deficit left by the previous government responsible for the prevailing inflation. The premier regretted that the country’s capacity for hydro power was not utilised in the past. He also asked the local and Chinese companies which built the power project to accelerate work on a desalination plant for Karachi “as water is a big issue for the city”. The prime minister said that the government is committed to fulfilling its pledge on ease of doing business. “Since we came to power, we have been working for ease of doing business. We are continuously striving to create ease of doing business,” he added. The premier said that he was told by an executive of a foreign mining firm that Pakistan has the best and the largest gold reserves in the world, which

can be mined very easily. He noted that mining companies didn’t come to Pakistan only because of corruption. “I have been saying for the last 22 years that corruption is the biggest issue of Pakistan,” the prime minister stressed. Investment does not come if corruption persists.” He said that the country is under burden of loans today not because nature has deprived Pakistan of resources but due to corruption. The country is making progress on CPEC projects, the prime minister said. Addressing Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani, the premier said that there is good news for him (Alyani) as China has agreed to step into the fisheries sector. “Mr chief minister you can develop Balochistan with the help of the fisheries sector alone,” he said. “They (China) have agreed to cooperate in the fisheries and agriculture sectors.” Prime Minister Imran stressed the need to mobilise the country’s resources and population. “We have to make our young population our asset. They will propel Pakistan,” he said. He also asked the chief minister to built a Special Economic Zone in Lasbela.Source: www.dawn.com/news

DG ISPR issues open challenge to Indian army to share locations of targeted ‘terror camps’

The Pakistan Army’s media wing on Monday issued an open challenge to the Indian army to share locations of the alleged terror camps the latter had claimed to have targeted in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The challenge came in response to a tweet by Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal, who noted that

the Indian high commission in Pakistan has not yet responded to an offer made by the director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), who had on Sunday challenged the embassy to take any foreign diplomat or media and prove the presence of terrorist camps in AJK as claimed by the Indian army chief.

“It indicates that they have no grounds to support [the] false claim by their COAS. We expect them to respond soon,” the FO spokesperson wrote. In response, the DG ISPR tweeted that “Indians have no grounds to support [the] false claim made by their COAS.” He said if the Indian envoys did not wish to visit AJK, they have the option of sharing the locations the Indian army had claimed to have targeted with Pakistan’s FO. “We will take foreign diplomats & media tomorrow on those given locations. Let all see facts on ground,” the army’s media wing said. ter Indian troops resorted to “indiscriminate and ruthless” shelling from across the LoC past midnight “without any provocation”, civil and military officials had said. In response, Pakistani troops had targeted Indian positions across the dividing line, destroying two Indian bunkers, killing nine Indian soldiers and injuring several other troops. Pakistan had later rejected India’s claim that they had “smashed four terror launch pads” in Neelum valley in the artillery fire by the Indian army as a “pack of lies”. In response to the Indian army chief ’s claim, the ISPR chief had tweeted: “Indian COAS’ statement claiming destruction of 3 alleged camps in AJK is disappointing as he holds a very responsible appointment. There are no camps let alone targeting those. Indian Embassy in Pakistan is welcome to take any foreign diplomat / media to ‘prove’ it on ground. The propensity of false claims by senior Indian military leadership, especially since Pulwama incident, is detrimental to peace in the region. Such false claims by Indian Army are being made to suit vested domestic interests. This is against professional military ethos.” Source: www.dawn.com/news

Trump: Republicans must ‘get ‘Israel’s Netanyahu gives up effort tougher’ impeachment inquiry to form new government Trump’s comments come as he faces criticism from some Republicans over other issues, including his policy towards Syria. US President Donald Trump on Monday exhorted fellow Republicans to get tougher and fight for him, saying the Democratic-led US House of Representatives wants to impeach him “as quick as possible” over his request that Ukraine investigate a political rival. Trump made his comments during a White House Cabinet meeting as Democrats sought to build public support for their fast-moving impeachment inquiry and the administration pressed its efforts to stonewall a probe that threatens his presidency. Few Republican politicians have shown an inclination to remove Trump from office. But Trump has come under sharp criticism from Republican Senator Mitt Romney. And other Republicans have expressed misgivings about Trump policies, including criticism by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Lindsey Graham of his withdrawal of United States troops in northeastern Syria, exposing US-allied Kurdish fighters to a Turkish cross-border offensive. Approval of articles of impeachment in the House would prompt a trial in the Republican-led Senate on whether to remove Trump from office. Trump is seeking re-election next year.Asked if it is a foregone conclusion that House Democrats will vote to impeach him, Trump said that “they’re not going to beat me in the election, so, of course, they want to impeach”. “They want to impeach. And they want to do it as quick as possible. And that’s pretty much the story,” Trump added. “The Republicans have to get tougher and fight. We have some that are great fighters, but they have to get tougher and fight, because the Democrats are trying to hurt the Republican Party before the election,” Trump said.

Trump said the Democrats are “vicious and they stick together”. “They don’t have Mitt Romney in their midst. They don’t have people like that. They stick together,” Trump added. In an interview aired with “Axios on HBO”, Romney denounced Trump’s requests to Ukraine and China to investigate Biden, questioned Trump’s character, criticised his decision to “abandon” Kurdish allies in the Syria war and deplored his hush-money payment to an adult film star. Romney was the 2012 Republican presidential nominee. Trump, a wealthy real estate developer, also said serving as president has personally cost him two to five billion dollars. He has not provided any evidence. Trump also expressed annoyance at having to reverse his decision to stage the G7 summit in June at his Trump National Doral golf resort in the Miami area. His plan to host the international gathering at a business he owns was criticised by Democrats and Republicans who said it gave the impression he was profiting from being president. House testimony looms Acting White House Budget Director Russell Vought said both he and Michael Duffey, associate director for national security programmes at the Office of Management and Budget, would not provide depositions to the committees leading the impeachment inquiry in the Democratic-led House. President Rivlin hands mandate to form new administration to Benny Gantz after Netanyahu admits defeat. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced he is giving up his effort to form a new government after failing to form a coalition following an inconclusive parliamentary election last month. Netanyahu, who heads the right-wing Likud party and faces potential indictment in three corruption cases, had hoped to establish a broad “unity” government with his main rival, former military chief Benny Gantz. But on Monday the 70-year-old said he had come up short, announcing in a video posted on his official Facebook page that despite working “tirelessly” to establish an administration with Gantz he had been repeatedly rebuffed. “During the past few weeks, I made every effort to bring Benny Gantz to the negotiating table. Every effort to establish a broad national unity government, every effort to prevent another election,” Netanyahu said. “To my regret, time after time he declined. He simply refused.” Netanyahu said he was consequently returning the “mandate” to President Reuven Rivlin. Rivlin gave Netanyahu the first opportunity to form a government because the Likud-led bloc of right-wing and religious parties won the most seats in Israel’s 120-seat parliament in the September 17 ballot, taking 55, one more than the Blue and White-headed bloc. As individual parties, Likud won 32 seats, while Blue and White took 33. Following Netanyahu’s announcement, Rivlin said he will now hold consultations with the various political parties to tell them he intends to task Gantz with the job of putting together a new government. ’Time for action’ Blue and White, meanwhile, said in a statement it was determined to “form the liberal

unity government, led by Benny Gantz, that the people of Israel voted for”. “The time of spin is over, and it is now time for action,” the party said. antz will now have a 28-day window to try and form a government. If he fails, Israel could be forced into the unprecedented scenario of a third election in less than a year. Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett, reporting from West Jerusalem, said Blue and White had previously made it clear they would enter government with Likud, but not while Netanyahu was head of the party. Gantz’s party say they are not willing to sit in government with someone who, as Netanyahu is, is under the prospect of indictment on three separate corruption charges,” Fawcett said, adding there was likely to be a “bumpy few weeks and months” ahead. “But the prospects for Gantz do look pretty bleak, either in terms of trying to form a minority government, or trying to form a unity government with Likud, because the party has shown no signs as of yet of being willing to jettison Netanyahu,” Fawcett said. Israel’s attorney general is set to decide in the coming weeks on whether to indict Netanyahu in the three cases. Netanyahu, for his part, says he is a victim of a political witch-hunt and as prime minister would be under no legal obligation to resign if formal charges were filed. Source: www.aljazeera.com

noted US policy direction for the country is completely different. Underscoring America’s will to stay in Afghanistan, Esper said it still faces a “virulent terrorist threat that originated in the form of Al Qaeda and now in the Taliban and ISIS-K and other groups”. “All these things should reassure our Afghan allies and others that they should not misinterpret our actions in the recent week or so with regard to Syria and contrast that with Afghanistan,” he said. The US and the Taliban were last month on the brink of signing a deal that would have seen some American forces begin to withdraw from Afghanistan in return for various insurgent security commitments. But negotiations collapsed at the last minute when Trump declared talks “dead” following Taliban attacks including one that killed a US soldier. Guarding Syria oil fields On Syria, Esper said the withdrawal of US forces would take “weeks not days”, and raised the possibility that some troops would stay for now in towns near oil fields as a way of preventing the IS and other groups seizing them. Adel Abdul Mahdi says Baghdad has taken ‘all international legal measures’ in response to US soldiers’ recent entry. Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has said United States troops pulling out of northeast Syria do not have permission to stay in Iraq, adding that his government is taking “all international legal measures” in response to their recent entry. The Iraqi leader made the comments in a statement reaffirming Baghdad’s position shortly after meeting US Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who arrived in the country on Wednesday in an unannounced visit. Abdul Mahdi said the government “has not granted permission for US forces withdrawing from Syrian territory to remain in Iraqi territory”. “We have [already] issued an official statement saying that and are taking all international legal measures. We ask the international community and the United Nations to perform their roles in this matter,” he said. His comments came a day after US and Iraqi officials offered apparently conflicting accounts of the fate of the US troops in the region, who have been leaving Syria as part of a withdrawal announced by President Donald Trump earlier this month. The Iraqi military said on Tuesday that the US forces do not have permission to stay in Iraq, in a response to Esper’s previous comments that the approximately 700 troops leaving Syria would continue operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) armed group from Iraq to prevent its resurgence in the region.

The US already has more than 5,000 troops in Iraq under an agreement between Washington and Baghdad forged when ISIL began taking large portions of the country in 2014. Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan, reporting from Baghdad, said Baghdad’s reaction appeared to have stemmed from “the language that the US used”. “The US said that the forces will come back to Ain al-Assad in western Iraq and mount operations against ISIL from there - and that seems to have angered the Iraqis,” Khan said Four-week timetable After meeting Esper earlier on Wednesday, Iraq’s Defence Minister Najah al-Shammari said US forces withdrawing from Syria into neighbouring Iraq would depart the country within four weeks. Shammari told The Associated Press news agency that the US troops were “transiting” in Iraq and would then head either to Kuwait or Qatar, or back to the US.. Esper said on Tuesday that Washington planned to eventually bring US troops withdrawing from Syria back home. He did not provide any timelines. Source: www.aljazeera.com

No Syria-type pullout planned for Iraqi PM says US troops do not have Afghanistan: Pentagon chief permission to stay in country

Afghans should not misconstrue America’s sudden and contentious withdrawal from parts of Syria as a precursor to a similar move in Afghanistan, US Defence Secretary Mark Esper said on Monday. The Pentagon chief also hinted that some sort of residual US force might remain in Syria to protect oil fields, but stressed no decision had been taken. The United States last week announced the withdrawal of 1,000 American troops from northeast Syria, days after Turkey launched an offensive against the previously US-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara considers a terrorist group. The move provoked outrage from observers and even members of US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party, who saw the sudden withdrawal as a betrayal of the same Kurdish fighters the US had been training and arming for years to fight the militant Islamic State (IS) group Speaking at Nato’s Resolute Support mission headquarters in Kabul, Esper said America maintains a “longstanding commitment” to Afghanistan, which it invaded in 2001 to oust the Taliban, and

Trudeau says new cabinet will be sworn Muslim Canadians Who Won in the 2019 Federal Election in Nov. 20, rules out coalition OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today said he would swear in his new gender-balanced cabinet on Nov. 20. After staying out of the spotlight on Tuesday following election night, Trudeau addressed the media in Ottawa, laying out how the next few weeks will look, which includes the swearing in of his new team – equally female and male, as in 2015 – that will lead his party through the 43rd parliamentary session. He said “next decisions,” like who exactly will fill those roles and what the government’s first priorities will be, will come over the next “days and weeks.” He also squashed speculation that the Liberals would form an alliance with another progressive party – likely the NDP – should they find themselves in a minority situation like they’re in now. “I intend to sit down with all party leaders in the coming weeks to talk about their priorities about how we can work together to respond to the preoccupations that Canadians have,” said Trudeau. “But I can tell you it is not in our plans at all to form any sort of formal or informal collation.” Reflecting on the outcome of Monday night, which brought his party to a minority rule and saw a blue wave throughout the West, Trudeau said more humbly, the results have given him “a lot to think about.” “They returned us to government but with a clear requirement to work with other priorities that Canadians spoke clearly to during the election campaign, particularly affordability and climate change. I’m going to take the time necessary to really reflect on how best to serve Canadians, how to work with the other parties,” Trudeau said. Taking stock of the campaign, the prime minister shared in the sentiment pundits, pollsters, and Canadians have also expressed: that the campaign was focused more on negative attacks as opposed to substantive policy discussions.“I think there were a lot of issues that weren’t properly addressed, I think there were big substantive ideas that weren’t fully debated in this election campaign and I regret that,” said Trudeau.“Many of us regret the tone, the divisiveness, and the disinformation that were all too present features.” He also acknowledged the significance of the fact that not a single Liberal candidate was elected in Alberta or Saskatchewan, and discussed how he plans to navigate this rift. “Any government needs to make sure it is hearing from every corner of the country,” said Trudeau. “I very much want to hear the concerns that folks are experiencing and the solutions that they’ve had to put forward for a part of the country that has faced some very difficult times over the past years.” Calls have been made, he said, to Conservative premiers in the region, Jason Kenney and Scott Moe, about how the governments can better work together going forward. Karim Bardeesy, co-founder of the Ryerson Leadership Lab, said that Canada’s current divisions can’t be attributed to policy deci-

sions around climate change and the energy sector.“[Trudeau] made a number of decisions around climate change for which he also had the national interest in mind – a carbon tax and arrangements to build one of three pipelines,” said Bardessy. “That he didn’t get the results he wanted in Western Canada doesn’t suggest to me that the policy positioning is wrong.” Massive support for the Conservatives might be a proxy for other frustrations, he added, and the prime minister’s office will have difficulty finding representation from the two provinces where Liberals got wiped out. To that end, Trudeau has a number of options about how to form his cabinet to ensure the voices of all provinces, or at least regions, are included at the table. According to Philippe Lagasse, associate professor at Carleton University and expert on Canada’s parliamentary system, the first option is to take a “minimalist” view of the expectation of regional representation. “If you simply view it as ‘the West’ then you can rely on the ideas of your members from Manitoba and British Columbia. If you see it more as no the idea is not the West, but all provinces, then you’re in a bit more of a bind,” told Lagasse to CTVNews.ca over the phone. To get out of that bind, you can look to entice members from other parties to cross the floor with the promise of a cabinet appointment, but as Lagasse says, that would be unlikely. “It wouldn’t just be floor-crossing in a regular sense. The provinces and voters in those provinces have overwhelmingly voted for one party. If you were to lure someone across the floor, that would be a fairly contentious move.” The third option, while less sensitive, is also fraught with political complexity given the Liberals’ first-term mandate to make the Senate more “Independent.” In this circumstance, he would pluck a senator from one of the Western provinces and move them over to cabinet, something former prime minister Stephen Harper did in 2006 to ensure Quebec representation. “We’ve always had a tradition that you can use the senate to shore up any lacuna that you have in the Commons for cabinet composition and that’s something we’ve done for quite some time. That’s an important principle,” said Lagasse. The prime minister said he would be “reflecting” on this decision over the next few days. Source: https://election.ctvnews.ca

The 2019 Canadian Federal Election took place on Monday, October 21, 2019. The following is a list of recently elected, the majority of them re-elected, Members of Parliament who identify as Muslim Canadian. Why does Muslim Link compile lists of Muslim Canadian elected officials? Well, it’s interesting. It is a great way to showcase the diversity of Muslims in Canada. Clearly, we do not all think alike nor agree if we are drawn to such a wide range of political perspectives. As the Editor in Chief, I always enjoy compiling these lists as I get to know more about quite interesting people and I get to learn more about what is happening in Canadian cities other than my own, which is the Nation’s Capital, Ottawa. This is the first list I compiled where so

many of the elected officials had been in office already so it was interesting to be able to also include some information about just what they have been doing since 2015. To learn more about what your Member of Parliament in your riding has been up to for the last four years, I recommend visiting ourcommons.ca. OpenParliament.ca is another site that is particularly interesting as you can search what any Member of Parliament or anyone who has testified before a parliamentary committee has said. The site was built by a computer programmer with time on his hands and is a completely volunteer run effort supported by the Canadian non-profit OpenNorth.ca which focuses on using open data for civil society. You can also just search for any word on the site.

VANCOUVER – One person is dead after a fire at a Surrey, B.C. gas station Monday morning, according to Surrey Fire Service. The blaze broke out around 5:30 a.m. in the convenience store of the Petro-Canada on Harvie Road, across the street from the Port Kells Community Hall. There was heavy smoke and flames when crews arrived, Asst. Fire Chief Jason Cairney said. There were reports of a person missing in the fire, and once firefighters got the flames under control they searched the building and found the body inside. The roof of the gas station collapsed during the fire, although the flames didn’t ignite any petrol in the pumps.

“That always raises the concern level as to whether the gas is involved or not,” Cairney said. “In this case it … didn’t complicate the matter any further.” Surrey RCMP and fire investigators are looking into what caused the blaze, the force said in a release. There’s a polling station in Port Kells Community Hall, and Elections Canada spokesperson Andrea Marantz said it remained open despite the fire. Two roads that access the Port Kells Community Hall were closed, but Elections Canada staff were directing traffic to the polling station from the east side via the 88th Avenue. Trudeau has won the most seats -- but not a majority. What happens next?

OTTAWA -- The Liberals have once more won the most seats in the House of Commons, but this time they do not have an outright majority. So what happens next? With fewer than the 170 seats needed to command the House on their own, Justin Trudeau will need the support of at least one other party to pass legislation in Parliament -- and survive a confidence vote on a speech from the throne laying out his plans for governing. Before then, Trudeau will have to deal with some of the implications of Monday’s results. Trudeau is still the prime minister and Canada is technically still in the same “ministry” -- essentially, the same cabinet or administration -- as before the election. However, the first decision Trudeau makes will likely be to reshuffle his cabinet, considering Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi

lost their seats. Trudeau’s next decisions will be to set a time for Parliament to reconvene. Technically, the Governor General summons a new Parliament, but does so on the advice of the prime minister. The timing of reconvening the House has varied throughout Canadian history. In 2015, it took over a month for MPs to be called back to Ottawa, though a new cabinet was sworn in far earlier than that. Given that there is less dramatic change than in that year, it’s possible we may see Parliament return sooner. When the new Parliament sits, its very first order of business will be the election of a Speaker. Geoff Regan, the current Speaker, was re-elected to his Halifax-area seat Monday but isn’t automatically returned to the position. Minority governments, explained The longest-serving MP in the House will preside over that election. Louis Plamondon, a Bloc MP, will oversee the proceedings for the fourth time -- Plamondon has held his Quebec seat since 1984 and was comfortably re-elected. And it’s after the election of the Speaker that the main event begins, with a speech from the throne. In the speech, the government will lay out its priorities and hint at what direction it will take in the new Parliament. The speech from the throne is also the first

opportunity for opposition parties to try to bring down the government in a confidence challenge. Since the Liberals have less than a majority of seats, they will need to make sure they can secure at least 170 votes to keep the confidence of the House and their grip on power. Trudeau has a few options. For one, he might bet that no party will want to bring down the government and potentially force another election -- or otherwise give the Conservatives the opportunity to form government. In that case, Trudeau would not make any agreements with the opposition parties, bet that he would survive a potential confidence vote anyway, and from there see if he could secure support on an issue-to-issue basis. But if he wants a more stable situation, Trudeau could make a more formal deal with another party to secure its support on confidence matters, an arrangement dubbed a “confidence and supply” agreement. Such a deal is in place in British Columbia, where the NDP are in government and maintain a parliamentary majority thanks to support from the provincial Greens. At the federal level, the most likely partner for such an agreement would be the NDP under Jagmeet Singh. During the campaign, Singh laid out six priorities for supporting another party in a minority, including pharmacare, investments in housing and action

on climate change. In exchange for maintaining the minority government, the NDP would expect to influence government policy on these files. It’s possible that the Liberals could form a formal coalition with another party -- in which members of the other party serve in cabinet -- to maintain a majority, though this is unlikely. The Bloc also has enough seats to sustain a Liberal government if it chooses to do so. However they get there, the goal of the Liberals will be to make sure they have at least 170 votes for confidence challenges and pieces of major legislation. Whether Trudeau wants to cut a deal with another party or take it vote by vote is up to him. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Source: https://election.ctvnews.ca

Scheer says Canada more divided than ever, as NDP, Bloc hold cards close

REGINA — Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer offered the Liberals no help Tuesday to try and piece together national unity after an election contest that’s left the country divided on regional lines. Scheer seized on his party’s success in the popular vote, the complete annihilation of the Liberals in Alberta and Saskatchewan and the re-emergence of a strong Bloc Quebecois as evidence that whatever pleasure the Liberals might take from Monday’s night results has also come at a cost. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spent 40 days demonizing the provinces and anyone else who disagreed with him, said Scheer. The choice is his about what happens next. “Justin Trudeau now has to make a decision if he’s going to change course, have a more co-operative approach with all provinces, or if he’s going to continue down on this path,” Scheer said in Regina. “We’re going to do everything we can to fight for a united Canada.” Conservative premiers in the West responded to the election by calling on the Liberals to implement more Conservative-minded policies. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said Trudeau should scrap the federal carbon tax (the centrepiece of the Liberals’ climate policy), revise the equalization formula that transfers money from wealthier provinces to poorer ones, and build oil pipelines. Alberta Premier Jason Kenney promised to name a panel of eminent Albertans to examine how the Canadian federation should be reconfigured to give Albertans “a fair deal.” He pointed out, however, that the Liberals are in favour of the Trans Mountain oil pipeline, just as Alberta is.

The results Monday night also showed a divide for the Conservatives to contend with. While the Liberals were shut out of two key prairie provinces, they took two-thirds of the seats in Ontario. The Conservatives failed to make any significant gains in Ontario and also lost one of their highest-profile MPs — deputy leader Lisa Raitt. The Conservatives also lost seats in Quebec, where the Bloc Quebecois snatched away many of their hoped-for gains. All told, the Liberals won 157 seats to the Conservatives’ 122 even as the Tories claimed 34.4 per cent of the popular vote compared to the Liberals’ 33.1 per cent. Scheer will face a potential leadership review in six months, at the party’s convention in Toronto next year. He, and those closest to him, were adamant Tuesday that he will remain in place, though there was grumbling among those farther away from his orbit about the party’s failure to capitalize on the multiple scandals around the Trudeau Liberals. Conservatives say they threw all the resources they had at this election, but always knew the strong drive for change that unseated them in 2015 wasn’t a powerful enough force, at a national level, to take

Trudeau down. After 2015, the plan and budget they put in place had always been set with a long game in mind: a potential minority in 2019, and then a majority after that government fell, party sources said on background Tuesday, granted anonymity to talk about internal strategy. Scheer also characterized Monday’s results that way. “We’re going to work as hard as we can in the coming days to prepare the groundwork for the next campaign,” he said. “This is a first step.”The New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois held their cards close, and did not discuss any negotiating points they plan to raise with the Trudeau government after Monday’s federal election reduced the Liberals to a minority. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said Tuesday he won’t negotiate an arrangement with the Trudeau government in public. His party won 24 seats, a worse showing than the 44 it won in 2015, and it was nearly wiped out in Quebec where it clung to just one. But Singh said he will fight for the objectives he laid out in the federal election campaign, including helping students, moving ahead with publicly-funded pharmacare and fighting climate change.

“I am hoping that Mr. Trudeau respects the fact there’s a minority government now which means we’ve got to work together,” Singh said in Burnaby, B.C. With Liberals just 13 seats shy of a majority, the fourth-place NDP still holds some sway with the resurrected Bloc Quebecois that will return to Ottawa with 32 seats. Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet said it’s not his job to make the new Parliament work, and that his guiding priority will be promoting Quebec interests. He said he will not drive a sovereignty agenda, saying that will be dictated by a rhythm and timing dictated by the Quebec people.“I expect us to have quite a good leverage,” said Blanchet. Trudeau showed up at a Metro station in his Montreal riding of Papineau Tuesday to thank his constituents after the Liberals secured a minority-government victory. Only a few hours after he left the stage at Liberal party election headquarters in Montreal, Trudeau stood at the top of the station’s escalators to shake hands with commuters, thanking them as they congratulated him on his electoral success and posing for photos when asked. Trudeau made a similar appearance the morning after the Liberals won the 2015 election, surprising commuters in Montreal who were not expecting to see the prime minister on their way to school or work. Unlike Scheer, Singh and Blanchet, Trudeau did not schedule a news conference Tuesday but is planning to hold one Wednesday, when he’s back in Ottawa. This report was first published by The Canadian Press on Oct. 22.

Green Party wins historic 3 seats in election dominated by climate change In an election campaign where the threat of climate change loomed large, Canada’s Green Party had its best result to date but failed to make a major breakthrough. The party regained both of its seats in B.C. — one held by Leader Elizabeth May, the other by Paul Manly. In Fredericton, N.B., Jenica Atwin defeated a Liberal incumbent to give the Green Party its third victory.

Jagmeet Singh can’t explain how the NDP failed to win any seats in Toronto in election 2019

BURNABY, B.C.—Surveying the defeats his party suffered in Monday’s federal election, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he can’t explain how New Democrats were completely shut out of Toronto and failed to pick up any seats they coveted in the wider GTA. Singh spent much of the campaign in the crucial battleground region, where the party zeroed in on ridings officials believed they could win from the Liberals. That included Jack Layton’s old seat in Toronto-Danforth, former MP Andrew Cash’s attempted comeback in Davenport, and in Brampton, where Singh started his political career as a provincial MP in a riding now represented by his brother at Queen’s Park. But despite making promises targeted di-

rectly at the region — including a pledge to convince Doug Ford’s conservative government to build a new hospital in Brampton — the NDP failed to achieve any gains. For the second election in a row, the Liberals swept Toronto, and the NDP were kept to the two seats in Hamilton they held before the vote. Singh was at a loss to explain what happened. “We’re going to have to figure out what we can do moving forward and how we can make sure we get our message across. I don’t have an answer for you right now, but I know that’s something that matters to me,” Singh said Tuesday morning at a hotel in the riding where he was re-elected in B.C.’s Lower Mainland. “I love Toronto. I love Brampton. These are

places that are really near and dear to me,” he said. “There’s a lot of people that need us out there, and we’ve just got to work harder.” The NDP entered the election with 39 seats in parliament. While the party was reduced to 24 seats in Monday’s vote, NDP officials welcomed the result in light of the NDP’s limited finances — annual donations have plummeted since 2015, according to returns filed with Elections Canada — and low expectations at the beginning of the campaign that included speculation they would fail to win the 12 seats needed for official party status in the House of Commons. The party also managed to defend enough seats to hold the balance of power in a mi-

nority parliament led by the Liberals — a twist that will give the party added heft in the House of Commons even with a smaller number of MPs. Source: https://www.thestar.com

Surrey Tree Lighting Festival Returns to Civic Plaza to Kick Off the Holiday Season

Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey will host the ninth annual Surrey Tree Lighting Festival and Holiday Market at Surrey Civic Plaza on Saturday, November 23 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Residents and visitors are invited to watch the 60 ft tall Christmas Tree decorated with giant holiday ornaments, lights and a star tree-topper light up at 6:30 p.m. to mark the start of the holiday season. “The Surrey Tree Lighting Festival is not

only a holiday tradition in our city, but it has become one of our most popular events of the year,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “I want to invite everyone to mark the date down and join us for this special celebration that kicks off the festive holiday season.” Presented by Coast Capital Savings, this year’s free event will feature new lights and interactive displays on the festival grounds including an illuminated Light Tunnel, Enchanted Forest, North Pole Stage and Candy Cane Dance Tent. its headquarters in the city, we are excited to be the presenting sponsor of the Surrey Tree Lighting Festival because this community is indeed our home,” said Maureen Young, Director, Community leadership, at Coast Capital Savings. “In addition to investing 10 per cent of our bottom line in programs that help young people achieve financial well-being, Coast Capital Savings is always pleased to partner with the city on events that celebrate our community spirit and this festival is a fantastic way for Surrey to usher in the most wonderful time of the year.” Over 30 local performers, choirs and children’s acts will offer free live performances across seven stages throughout the day. Award-winning Canadian pop singer Begonia will headline the Main Stage after the inaugural tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. Additional performers include Fleetwood Mac

tribute band Dreams, local alternative rock band, Hotel Mira and indie pop group Leisure Club. Holiday choirs will perform on the Tree Riser Stage, Snowflake Stage and in the City Centre Library. The Surrey Food Bank, Surrey Christmas Bureau, Sophie’s Place and the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society will be on site collecting donations. Celebrating small businesses in B.C. as they continue to shine

It’s time to celebrate Small Business Week (Oct. 20-26, 2019) and to recognize the tremendous contributions small businesses make to their local communities and B.C.’s economy. Small businesses are the heart of B.C.’s communities and the backbone of the province’s economy. Over half a million small businesses, employing almost 1.1 million people, are operating in the province. British Columbia’s unemployment rate remains one of the lowest in Canada, showing B.C. has a resilient economy and a strong workforce – thanks, in large part, to small businesses. The 2019 Small Business Profile, released this week, confirms that small businesses contribute significantly to the economy by creating and maintaining good jobs in communities throughout the province. The annual profile publishes key statistics on the health and contributions of B.C.’s small business sector and shares the stories of some of the successful entrepreneurs behind the numbers. One small business highlighted in the profile is owned by Kory Wood. In a

spare room in an old house he was renting, in 2013, Wood founded a maintenance and construction company that would later be known as Kikinaw Energy Services. Now the Saulteau First Nations member-owned company supports the wind energy, oil and gas, and utility sectors in a 279 square-metre (3,000 squarefoot) building. Kikinaw Energy Services has operations across Canada, recently opened a Calgary office and has plans to enter the U.S. market. “Don’t walk alone – surround yourself with good people who genuinely want what’s best for you,” said Wood. He and his company won the BC Indigenous Business Award for Outstanding Business Achievement in 2018. Mary-Anne Bowcott is also showcased in the 2019 Small Business Profile. Fifteen years ago, it was highly unusual to see women working in trades and on job sites, but that’s where Bowcott wanted to work. She had a difficult time landing her first job. “I probably handed out 100 resumes and didn’t get a single call back,” said Bowcott. Eventually a friend’s uncle hired her as a roofer. She loved working

in the trades and decided to become a plumber. Once certified, Bowcott was inspired by local businesswomen to start her own company, even though she worried that people might not hire her. “It turned out that I didn’t need to worry. People are excited to see someone unconventional making it in my industry,” Bowcott said. In March, Bowcott was awarded the Canadian Construction Association’s 2018 Person of the Year. Small Business Week is a great time to acknowledge your community’s success stories. Over the course of the year, the achievements of small businesses and their communities are highlighted through two awards. The Small Business BC Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of B.C.’s small business entrepreneurs in categories such as Best Employer, Best Immigrant Entrepreneur and the Premier’s People’s Choice Award. Award winners receive one-year, all-access

passes to Small Business BC services and a cash prize of $1,500. The Open for Business Awards recognize communities that have adopted best practices to create a business-friendly environment. This is an excellent way to acknowledge the vital role of community support in the success of small businesses. Nominations for both awards close Nov. 30, 2019. Small Business Week and these awards are opportunities to celebrate the small businesses and communities that help promote economic prosperity for all British Columbians.

As Lebanon protests rage, political elite in a bind

After a week of mass demonstrations, protesters are refusing to leave the streets until the government steps down. Beirut, Lebanon - Protesters have continued to block roads across Lebanon on the seventh day of mass protests, refusing to leave the streets until the government steps down. Clashes broke out on Wednesday after the Lebanese army tried to forcibly open a key road at the Jal el Dib bridge on the northern outskirts of the capital, Beirut. Two people were reportedly injured. Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s economic reforms package has failed to placate protesters, who want an overhaul of the country’s political system and an end to economic woes. While mass protests have shaken Lebanon before, most protesters and analysts say they don’t see the protests dying down any time soon. Political scientist Michel Douaihy told Al Jazeera that its the protests’

decentralisation that has given the movement serious momentum and has “accelerated the heat” on the government. “For the first time ever we have protests in the south of Lebanon, an area tightly controlled politically, protests in Bekaa, in the mountains in Tripoli,” Douaihy said. Southern Lebanon has been a stronghold of the most powerful political group in the country, Hezbollah. Protesters continue with road blocks to disrupt daily life. Keeping the protests confined to only public squares, as the government wants, would stifle the momentum and allow ordinary life for the public to resume. On the streets leading to Marty’s Square and Riyad al-Solh square, in downtown Beirut, protesters have set up makeshift roadblocks using garbage bins and containers as well as scraps of metal, wood and concrete. Banks, schools and universities continued

to be closed on the third day of the general strike until further notice. Dany El-Horr, a protester at Marty’s Square, says this time all Lebanese are united regardless of their sects, “under the umbrella of the country”. “There’s no need now for each one of us to protect his own sect or religion. This is nonsense. And the people just woke up to that reality,” the 39-year-old engineer told Al Jazeera. El-Horr has been attending the protests all day since they erupted last Thursday following imposition of new taxes, including charges on WhatsApp calls. He says the

government corruption is at “unseen levels” and the country has become unliveable. But El-Horr fears that if the government refuses to step down, a civil war could break out.“Civil wars begin by humiliating people. By not listening to the people, the government is making the people look as if they’re losing their dignity… people will get killed eventually if things drag on for a while,” he said. The four observation posts are designed to facilitate ‘direct inter-party de-escalation in flash point areas’. Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Houthi rebels have agreed to set up four observation posts to monitor a fragile ceasefire in the flashpoint port city of Hodeidah, according to the United Nations.

In a statement on Wednesday, Abhijit Guha, the head of the UN’ s Hodeidah mission, welcomed the establishment of the posts, which are designed to facilitate “direct inter-party de-escalation in flash point areas seen as susceptible to conflict.| ”The two parties finalised written agreements in all four locations and deployed liaison officers at each observation post,” it added. Guha called on all warring parties to reduce rhetoric and support efforts to maintain the

ceasefire in Hodeidah. Yemen’s conflict broke out in late 2014 with the Houthis’ takeover of the capital, Sanaa. The war escalated in March 2015 when a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched a ferocious air campaign against the rebels in a bid to restore the internationally recognised government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. In December 2018, a ceasefire and troop redeployment agreement for Hodeidah was reached at UN-sponsored talks between Hadi’s government and the Houthis in Sweden as a trust-building measure to pave the way for wider negotiations to end the war. The tentative ceasefire has reduced, but not stopped, violence and the troop withdrawal

stalled for many months before a pull-out by the Houthis from three Red Sea ports in May under phase one of the deal. Now in its fifth year, the war in the region’s poorest country has killed tens of thousands of people and left millions suffering amid a lack of food and medical care. Hodeidah, Yemen’s main port and a lifeline for millions of Yemenis on the brink of starvation, became the focus of the conflict last year when the coalition tried twice to seize it to cut off the Houthis’ main supply line. Riyadh sees Hodeidah port as the main entry point of weapons for the Houthis and has accused their regional rival Iran of sending missiles to the rebels, a charge Tehran has denied. Trump lifts US sanctions on Turkey, says ceasefire permanent

US president says Turkey has informed the United States that it will make the ceasefire in Syria ‘permanent’. US President Donald Trump has announced that Turkey said it is stopping combat and making a ceasefire in northern Syria permanent, prompting the United States to lift recent sanctions it had imposed on Turkish imports in response to the violence. “The sanctions will be lifted unless something happens that we are not happy with,” Trump said on Wednesday in a special address from the White House where he also spoke sceptically about the meaning of “permanent” in “that part of the world”. Earlier this month, Trump halted negotiations on a $100bn trade deal with Turkey, raised steel tariffs back up to 50 percent and imposed sanctions on three senior Turkish officials and Turkey’s defence and energy ministries. The president has been under fire for abruptly withdrawing US troops from northern Syria, with many accusing him of abandoning Kurdish forces, who had been one of the US’s main allies in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, or ISIS). Following the withdrawal, Turkey launched an offensive against Kurdish forces in the

region. Last week, Turkey agreed to a fiveday ceasefire to allow Kurdish forces to withdraw. Turkey-Russia deal The ceasefire ended as Turkey and Russia struck a deal in Sochi. Under the agreement, Russia and Syria will “facilitate the removal” from the border region of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) fighters. Ankara will also control a 32km-wide (20-mile) stretch between the towns of Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain, which covers 120km (75 miles) of the Turkey-Syria border, the deal said. Turkey had long said it wanted to establish a 444km long (276-mile) and 32km wide (20mile) “safe zone”. However, during the ceasefire, the US and the YPG-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said the withdrawal would only cover the 120km (75-mile) area between Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad - something that was also confirmed by the agreement reached in Sochi. Russia on Wednesday warned Kurdish forces to quickly withdraw from the Turkey-Syria border or be crushed by the Turkish army. Moscow added that the US “betrayed and abandoned” Syrian fighters. Russia is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s main military ally. Trump said some troops would remain in Syria’s oil fields despite a broader US withdrawal from the country. “We have secured the oil and, therefore, a small number of US troops will remain in the area where they have the oil,” he said. Trump also warned that “crippling” sanctions could be reimposed if Turkey failed to honour its obligation to protect religious and ethnic minorities. Source: www.aljazeera.com

16 election 2019 Federal election shows only ‘marginal’ boost for women in politics: Equal Voice Safar 26, 1441H Oct 25, 2019

TORONTO – A national organization campaigning for gender parity in Canadian politics said the advancement of female representation in Parliament after Monday’s election was “marginal.” This election saw an increase of 10 women elected federally, meaning only 29 per cent of the House of Commons representation is female – a three per cent increase from the 2015 election, according to Equal Voice, the national multi-partisan organization dedicated to electing women to all levels of political office in Canada. “Canada – internationally – is not where it needs to

be,” Nasha Brownridge, national spokesperson for Equal Voice, said in an interview with CTVNews. ca. “Change in Canada has been incredibly slow and incremental and we need to do better, all the political parties need to do better, Canada needs to do better.” The data pulled from Monday’s election by Equal Voice shows that women now hold 33 per cent of seats picked up by the Liberal Party, 18 per cent of Conservative seats, 37.5 per cent of seats for both the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois , and 66 per cent of Green seats. NP View: Canada needs a Conservative government

Canada deserves better, because better is, after all, always possible. Our democracy permits us to choose a new leader when the current one falls short of even his own stated ideals, as Trudeau repeatedly has There was a telling moment on the campaign trail just days ago. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau was asked if he had any regrets about his four years in power. Trudeau answered, in part, that Canadians “find ourselves more polarized, more divided in this election than in 2015. I wonder how, or if, I could have made sure we were pulling Canadians together?”

It was a revealing answer. Trudeau is certainly right that Canadians are divided today. He may indeed genuinely wonder if he could have done more to help. But his answer doesn’t contain a hint, not even the faintest glimmer, of any understanding that he himself shares some responsibility for the discord — not because of helpful things he could have done but didn’t, but because of the harmful things he and his party have done. Trudeau is a man much better able to apologize for the failures of those long dead than recognize where his own conduct has fallen short. And he has fallen short. History tells us that Trudeau, elected in 2015 with a strong majority mandate and promising a sunnier kind of politics, should be facing an easy reelection campaign. The economy is, in general terms, good. The country is not beset by war or economic crises. In times like these, Canadians tend to stick with their leaders, yet Trudeau is fighting for his political survival. Canadians have clearly tired of his brand of politics — all preening theatrics, all the time, even as embarrassing scandals and broken promises accumulate. Canadians have clearly tired of Trudeau’s brand of politics

Canada deserves better, because better is, after all, always possible. Our democracy permits us the chance to choose a new leader when the current one falls short of even his own stated ideals, as Trudeau repeatedly has. This is one of those moments — and the choice is clear. Canadians should elect Andrew Scheer and a Conservative majority government. Scheer needed some time to hit his stride on the campaign trail. He also has taken too long to answer some questions about his past positions, to his own disadvantage. But Scheer and the Conservatives are offering up a desperately needed change from the status quo. They are proposing a modest degree of fiscal restraint, bringing the federal budget back to balance in five years. They’re proposing a tax cut for the lowest income bracket and an aggressive effort to reduce red tape and regulatory burdens for businesses. Their proposed national energy corridor, though short on details, offers Canadians a chance to finally break the logjams of delayed approvals that have hobbled our energy sector and strained the unity of our federation. The Conservative climate change plan rightly recognizes that Canada’s contribution to carbon emissions is but a tiny fraction of

the global total, and that it is technology, not rhetoric, that will allow us to gradually reduce our reliance on fossil fuels while still enjoying a high standard of living. Scheer and the Conservatives are offering up a desperately needed change from the status quo Fundamentally, in stark contrast to the incumbent Liberals, the Conservatives recognize that sound fiscal management is an unavoidable precondition for growing an innovative and productive economy. But what the Conservatives are offering most of all is a break with the selfish, often preposterous leadership Canadians have seen these past four years. Trudeau is a recognized talent at political branding and optics — his government has been a highly polished PR machine, and the man himself, as he recently admitted in rather awkward circumstances, has a weakness for costumes and pageantry. This doesn’t only include his personal dress, and an awful habit of donning blackface makeup, but also his political career — Trudeau’s Liberals have shown themselves to be absolutely shameless in their willingness to promise one thing while delivering another. And they don’t seem to realize that Canadians have noticed. Source: https://nationalpost.com

Monday’s result marked the lowest share of the overall vote ever won by a winning party, and stoked new fears that Ottawa was losing touch with prairie provinces and Quebec. OTTAWA — Alberta Premier Jason Kenney warned of deepening Western resentments on Tuesday, following a federal election that sharpened divides between the prairies and Ottawa and laid the groundwork for a potentially raucous parliamentary session this winter. “If the frustration and alienation in Alberta continues to mount, it will pose a very serious challenge to national unity,” Kenney said, repeating earlier warnings about rising separatist sentiments in the province. Kenney said he would launch a panel of experts to consult with Albertans about how

to “better assert fairness in the federation” as distrust toward Ottawa’s environmental policies grows. Kenney on Tuesday said he spoke with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about potential deals the province could strike with Ottawa as a way to ensure the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline, potentially including a higher tax on the province’s heavy emitters. “This relationship needs some good faith from Ottawa, and if it doesn’t get that I feel that alienation is going to go in a very problematic direction,” Kenney said. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said the federal election results confirm there’s a fire of frustration burning in Western Canada and it’s time for a new deal with Ottawa. “The path our federal government has been

on the last four years has divided our nation,” Moe said in a statement. “Last night’s election results showed the sense of frustration and alienation in Saskatchewan is now greater than it has been at any point in my lifetime.” On Monday, Trudeau eked out a narrow minority government on Monday, dropping from 184 seats in 2015 to 157. The result marked the lowest share of the overall vote ever won by a winning party, and stoked new fears that Ottawa was losing touch both with prairie provinces and with Quebec. All but one of the 48 seats in Alberta and Saskatchewan went to the Conservatives, while the Bloc Québécois surged from 10 seats in 2015 to 32 as regional alliances ap-

peared to firm up. “Canadians woke up this morning to a more divided country,” Conservative leader Andrew Scheer said........... Source: https://nationalpost.com/

19 womeN/ Youth Reading to Remember: Local Kids Honour Beloved Librarian Safar 26, 1441H Oct 25, 2019

Surrey, BC – When their beloved librarian, Gayle Harris, passed away unexpectedly earlier this year, siblings Ivy (age 8) and Jacob (age 11) Hendrickson decided to start a fundraising campaign to honour her memory. Their campaign called “Reading to Remember Gayle” had them both vowing to read for 50 hours each over the summer and collecting pledges for each hour they read to raise funds for a staff education fund set up to honour Gayle’s memory. From an early age, these passionate readers visited Surrey Libraries - City Centre branch every week for Gayle’s storytimes and Jacob remembers the meaningful ways she let him help her during the program as he got older. This weekly routine and familiar face helped to fuel both kids’ appreciation for the library and to foster their love of reading.

“Jacob and Ivy really connected with Gayle,” said mom, Kelly Hendrickson. “She was such a strong influence in their lives and they needed a way to process her loss so we all talked about it and came up with this idea as a way to focus on something positive.” The Gayle Harris Memorial Education fund was established by Gayle’s mother, Barbara E. Harris with an initial $100,000 donation to Surrey Libraries. The Fund will be used to provide annual grants to Surrey Libraries staff who are studying to get their Master of Library and Information Studies degree or Library Technician diploma. “I’m so touched by Ivy and Jacob’s efforts to remember Gayle. Reading is a super way of remembering Gayle as it was such a big part of her life…she sometimes missed her stop on SkyTrain because she was so engrossed

in what she was reading,” said Barbara Harris. “I’m so proud to learn of these kids, their mom, and their wonderful tribute to Gayle.” When asked what she likes best about the library, Ivy said, “I like the idea you can come here and find any book you want.” Jacob describes loving the feeling of being in the library, “You walk in and you’re completely surrounded by books.” Ivy and Jacob met their goal and read for a total of 102 hours over the summer. That make a donation to the Gayle Harris translated to a $1,200 donation from their Memorial Education Fund, Reading to Remember Gayle fundraiser. To please visit https://bit.ly/2Zfqntn.

nual writing competition for youth aged 1218. Since launching the contest in 1987, Surrey Libraries has received over 6,500 entries from aspiring young writers across Surrey. The contest is free to enter and young writers submit entries to one of the four contest categories: short stories, poems, comics, and

a new random category for other types of writing such as essays and screenplays. “With more than 300 entries this year, our judges were challenged to select the winning entries,” explains Kelly Lau, Youth Services Librarian and contest coordinator. “We were so impressed by the diversity, creativity and fearlessness demonstrated by all the young writers who submitted their works. The future of writing is in good hands.” Alyana Amadeo who placed in both the junior short story and the junior poetry categories said, “I think the competition is cool. I think it can motivate young people to write and inspire people to start writing – especially the poetry and comics, even if you don’t like writing.” This popular program is organized by the dynamic youth library staff at Surrey Libraries - City Centre branch and is made possible through the generous support of

the program’s champion sponsors: Khalsa Credit Union, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and The Dhahan Prize for Punjabi Literature. First time entrant, Meshal Asghar, who received an honourable mention for her short story said, “The process was straight forward and easy. I really enjoyed it. I started getting into writing a lot more in my senior year of high school and writing a story for my provincial exam. Since I worked really hard on it for the provincial exam, I thought I would submit it for the competition. I wasn’t sure that I was going to get an award at all but it was really exciting and I’m really thankful.” An anthology of the winners’ work will be available online or to check out from any Surrey Libraries branch. Anthologies can also be purchased for $8.00 for a limited time at the City Centre branch

with a decision on their values, important things for them and then vote. It is not that, *whatever* the father says should be done as a tyrannical obligation but rather at times, other family members know what is the best thing to do. Some houses may have the young being wiser or more knowledgeable and vice-versa. Creating the Atmosphere When children do something they like or hide their lives from the elders, when they avoid communication or confrontation, the elders complain of disobedience or becoming like strangers to us as they may live in the house more like guests. When the child is not allowed to say or express their likes and dislikes, or opinions freely without being criticized, they feel they are like outsiders in the family, they are just either informed or ordered to do something, they start keeping distance. When all the family members are given due respect they also learn to give re-

spect in return. In this era of modern technology, our children are much open minded and aware of what is happening in and out, around them. They are more clear about what do they expect and want from life and people in their life. They are smarter and fearless than the earlier generations. They have to face more fierce competition in life. The parents will have to find a way to teach children old values and at the same time, understand new values. Otherwise, the generations will become distant from each other. We must have flexibility in small matters and understanding towards each other. The Leader When we select the leader, we seek for certain good qualities in our leader. It is our duty as a parent to cultivate good and sound qualities in our children so that in future if they happen to be the leader we are voting today. Whichever we think right accord-

ing to our own judgement we have come so far with some good qualities, some good strength of character and ability and personality. Let us ourselves first try to be worthy citizens, good human beings and make our future candidates who are our children, a better person, a good and hard-working human being, knowledgeable and capable.

Casting vote!

These last few days were when we were supposed to vote. We were reminded to vote, the importance of our vote, to not vote, and whom to vote. Why is it hard: “whom to vote for?” It is hard because we want to make right choice. By the time, we are reading this, results will be already declared, the party who wins, the people who voted for them will celebrate a victory, and every one has a lot to say about politics and the parties they like or dislike. Every family should discuss this and come

What happens if your mind lives for ever on the internet?

I

By: Michael SA Graziano magine that a person’s brain could be scanned in great detail and recreated in a computer simulation. The person’s mind and memories, emotions and personality would be duplicated. In effect, a new and equally valid version of that person would now exist, in a potentially immortal, digital form. This futuristic possibility is called mind uploading. The science of the brain and of consciousness increasingly suggests that mind uploading is possible – there are no laws of physics to prevent it. The technology is likely to be far in our future; it may be centuries before the details are fully worked out – and yet given how much interest and effort is already directed towards that goal, mind uploading seems inevitable. Of course we can’t be certain how it might affect our culture but as the technology of simulation and artificial neural networks shapes up, we can guess what that mind uploading future might be like. Suppose one day you go into an uploading clinic to have your brain scanned. Let’s be generous and pretend the technology works perfectly. It’s been tested and debugged. It captures all your synapses in sufficient detail to recreate your unique mind. It gives that mind a standard-issue, virtual body that’s reasonably comfortable, with your face and voice attached, in a virtual environment like a high-quality video game. Let’s pretend all of this has come true.

Who is that second you?

The first you, let’s call it the biological you, has paid a fortune for the procedure. And yet you walk out of the clinic just as mortal as when you walked in. You’re still a biological being, and eventually you’ll die. As you drive home, you think: “Well, that was a waste of money.” At the same time, the simulated you wakes up in a virtual apartment and feels like the same old you. It has a continuity of experience. It remembers walking into the clinic, swiping a credit card, signing a waiver, lying on the table. It feels as though it was anaesthetised and then woke up again somewhere else. It has your memories, your personality, your thought patterns and emotional quirks. It sits up in a new bed and says: “I can’t believe it worked! Definitely worth the cost.” I won’t call it an “it” any more, because that mind is a version of you. We’ll call it the simulated you. This “sim” you decides to explore. You step out of your apartment into the sunlight of a perfect day and find a virtual version of New York City. Sounds, smells, sights, people, the feel of the sidewalk underfoot, everything is present – with less garbage though, and the rats are entirely sanitary and put in for local colour. You chat up strangers in a way you would never do in the real New York, where you’d be worried that an impatient pedestrian might punch you in the teeth. Here, you can’t be injured because your virtual body can’t break. You stop at a cafe and sip a latte. It doesn’t taste right. It doesn’t feel like anything is going into your stomach. And nothing is, because it isn’t

real food and you don’t have a stomach. It’s all a simulation. The visual detail on the table is imperfect. There’s no grittiness to the rust. Your fingers don’t have fingerprints – they’re smooth, to save memory on fine detail. Breathing doesn’t feel the same. If you hold your breath, you don’t get dizzy, because there is no such thing as oxygen in this virtual world. You find yourself equipped with a complementary simulated smartphone, and you call the number that used to be yours – the phone you had with you, just a few hours ago in your experience, when you walked into the clinic. Now the biological you answers the phone. “Yo,” says the sim you. “It’s me. I mean, it’s you. What’s up?” “I’m depressed, that’s what. I’m in my apartment eating ice-cream. I can’t believe I spent all that money for zilch.” “Zilch?! You would not believe what it’s like in here! It’s a fantastic place. Remember Kevin, the guy who died of cancer last week? He’s here too! He’s fine, and he still has the same job. He Skypes with his old yoga studio three times a week, to teach his fitness class. But his girlfriend in the real world has left him for someone who’s not dead yet. Still, lots of new people to date here.” I have to resist getting carried away by the humour of the situation. Underneath the details lies a very real philosophical conundrum that people will eventually have to confront. What is the relationship between bio you and sim you? I prefer a geometric way of thinking about the situation. Imagine that your life is like the rising stalk of the letter Y. You’re born at the base, and as you grow up, your mind is shaped and changed along a trajectory. Then you let yourself be scanned, and from that moment on, the Y has branched. There are now two trajectories, each one equally and legitimately you. Let’s say the left-hand branch is the simulated you and the right-hand branch is the biological you. The part of you that lives indefinitely is represented by both the stem of the Y and the left-hand branch. Just as your childhood self lives on in your adult self, the stem of the Y lives on in the simulated self. Once the scan is over, the two branches of the Y proceed along different life paths, accumulating different experiences. The right-hand branch will die. Everything that happens to it after the branching point fails to achieve immortality – unless it chooses to scan itself again, in which case another branch appears, and the geometry becomes even more complicated. What emerges is not a single you, but a topo-

logically intricate version, a hyper you with two or more branches. One of those branches is always going to be mortal, and the others have an indefinite lifespan depending on how long the computer platform is maintained. Neuroscientists decode brain speech signals into written text You might think that since the bio you lives in the real world, and the sim you lives in a virtual world, the two will never meet and therefore should never encounter any complications from coexisting. But these days, who needs to meet in person? We interact mainly through electronic media anyway. The sim you and the bio you represent two fully functional, interactive, capable instances of you, competing within the same larger, interconnected, social and economic universe. You could easily find yourselves meeting over video conference. At the simplest level, mind uploading would preserve people in an indefinite afterlife. Families could have Christmas dinner with sim Grandma joining in on video conference, the tablet screen propped up at the end of the table – presuming she has time for her bio family any more, given the rich possibilities in the simulated playground. It’s this kind of idealised afterlife that people have in mind, when they think about the benefits of mind uploading. It’s a human-made heaven. But unlike a traditional heaven, it isn’t a separate world. It’s seamlessly connected to the real world. Think of how you interact with the world right now. If you live the typical western lifestyle, then the smallest part of your life involves interacting with people in the physical space around you. Your connection to the larger world is almost entirely through digital means. The news comes to you on a screen or through earbuds. Distant locations are real to you mainly because you learn about them through electronic media. Politicians, celebrities, even some friends and family may exist to you mainly through data. People work in virtual offices where they know their colleagues only through video and text. Each of us might as well already be in a virtual world, with a steady flow of information passing in and out through CNN, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and text. We live in a kind of multiverse, each of us in a different virtual bubble, the bubbles occasionally

merging in real space and then separating, but always connected through the global social network. If a virtual afterlife is created, the people in it, with the same personalities and needs that they had in real life, would have no reason to isolate themselves from the rest of us. Very little needs to change for them. Socially, politically, economically, the virtual and the real worlds would connect into one larger and always expanding civilisation. The virtual world might as well be simply another city on Earth, filled with people who have migrated to it. A neuroscientist explains: the need for ‘empathetic citizens’ - podcast We’ve always lived in a world where culture turns over with each generation. But what happens when the older generations never die, but remain just as active in society? There’s no reason to think that the living will have any political, economic, or intellectual advantage over the simulated. Think of the jobs people have in our world. Many of them require physical action, and those are the jobs that will probably be replaced by automatons. Taxi driver? Publicly shared, self-driving cars are almost here. Street cleaners? Checkout operators? Construction workers? Pilots? All of these jobs are probably for the chopping block in the medium to long term. Robotics and artificial intelligence will take them over. The rest of our jobs, our contributions to the larger world, are done through the mind, and if the mind can be uploaded, it can keep doing the same job. A politician can work from cyberspace just as well as from real space. So can a teacher, or a manager, or a therapist, or a journalist, or the guy in the complaints department. The CEO of a company, a Steve Jobs type who has shaped up a sweet set of neural connections in his brain that makes him exceptional at his work, can manage from a remote, simulated office. If he must shake hands, he can take temporary possession of a humanoid robot, a kind of shared rent-a-bot, and spend a few hours in the real world, meeting and greeting. Even calling it the “real” world sounds prejudicial to me. Both worlds would be equally real. Maybe the better term is the “foundation” world and the “cloud” world. The foundation world would be full of people who are mere youngsters – mainly under the age of 80 – who are still accumulating valuable experience. Their unspoken responsibility would be to gain wisdom and experience before joining the ranks of the cloud world. The balance of power and culture would shift rapidly to the cloud. How could it not? That’s where the knowledge, experience and political connections will accumulate. In that scenario, the foundation world becomes a kind of larval stage for immature minds, and the cloud world is where life really begins. Mind uploading could transform our culture and civilisation more profoundly than anything in our past. Nawaz’s condition stable, under control: NAB

After former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was shifted to Services Hospital late on Monday night, the National Accountability Bureau said his condition was “under control” and dengue test results were negative.

In a press release issued by NAB Lahore following the former premier’s visit to the hospital, the accountability watchdog said that Nawaz’s platelets had decreased “allegedly due to provision of medicine which makes blood thin that was suggested by Dr Adnan Khan, who is his personal physician”. The accountability watchdog said Nawaz had been shifted to Services Hospital for a complete medical check and in order to increase his platelet levels. “A team of doctors have been deputed to provide him round the clock medical facilities without fail,” the press release stated, adding that his physician had spent three hours with Nawaz on Monday. “Therefore, the impression being given in media that NAB has not given him per-

mission to see Nawaz Sharif is not correct and totally baseless. Media is requested to kindly avoid spreading speculations without consulting [NAB’s] spokesman,” the bureau clarified. Visiting Services Hospital today, PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif said: “We [Sharif family] and doctors are very worried that [Nawaz’s] platelets reached 15,000 level while the normal level is 150,000 to 400,000.” “It is very concerning that [Nawaz’s] platelets dropped so fast,” he added. Following his arrest in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case, the former premier had been shifted from Kot Lakhpat jail (where he is serving seven-year imprisonment in Al-Azizia case) to NAB’s Lahore building. The bureau obtained his physical remand till Oct 25.or-

ders On Monday evening, Dr Adnan Khan had raised alarm about the former premier’s deteriorating health, urging the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government to immediately shift him to a hospital for treatment.A number of party workers had gathered outside the NAB office late on Monday evening demanding that the concerned authorities shift their leader to a hospital. Shahbaz had also issued a statement, demanding the Punjab government to shift his brother to the hospital without further delay. “The medical reports of Nawaz Sharif by the government show that his condition is very serious. It is a callous attitude of the PTI government that despite his worsening health condition he is not being shifted to hospital,” Source: .dawn.com

Former president and PPP chief Asif Ali Zardari was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) on Tuesday for treatment and lab tests after a medical board in Adiala jail recommended that the authorities do so.Last week, an accountability court in Islamabad had ordered jail authorities to act upon the advice of medical officers on Zardari’s plea for his shifting to a hospital. The former president is currently on judicial remand in the fake accounts case. The PPP leader was brought to the hospital today from Adiala jail in an armoured vehicle. Doctors at the hospital performed a medical examination and took samples for labs. The former president has meanwhile been shifted to the cardiology department of the hospital. Talking to reporters after

reaching the hospital, the former president said, “God willing, Maulana Fazlur Rehman will achieve his goal [of ousting the government].” “Aisa tau hota hai aise ma’amloun mai [that’s the way the cookie crumbles],” he replied when told that containers have been placed and arrests are being made to thwart the protest. Last week, the PPP leader had told the accountability court that he is diabetic and suffers from cardiac ailments and needs medical care. The accountability court, however, had rejected a plea seeking the transfer of th ePPP chief and former president from jail to a hospital. The court had rejected the plea on the grounds that the matter does not fall in the court’s jurisdiction. Judge Mohammad Bashir, while pronouncing the decision, had

directed Zardari to approach jail authorities instead. According to the verdict, jail authorities can declare a hospital a sub-jail through an executive order. The court also ordered the jail superintendent to act upon the recommendations of the medical officers or a medical board. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had arrested Zardari on June 10 after cancellation of his pre-arrest bail by the Islamabad High Court in the fake bank accounts case. On Aug 16, the court had sent the former president to Adiala jail on judicial remand. The case pertains to a massive money laundering scam that was previously being probed by the Federal Investigation Agency. The suspects include Zardari, Talpur, former Pakistan Stock Exchange chairman Hussain Lawai, Omni Group CEO An-

war Majeed and his sons and several other high profile persons. The case was later taken over by NAB on the Supreme Court’s orders Source: .dawn.com

Under the Rules of Business, 1973, a summary is sent to cabinet members who sign the copy to give their approval, but under this circulation method, the summary is also deemed approved after a stipulated period of time even if the cabinet members haven’t signed it. Last week, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan had said that the federal cabinet would take up the matter in its next meeting. The interior ministry in its summary sent to the cabinet had said: “Various source reports shared by our intelligence agencies and provincial governments with the Ministry of Interior [have] revealed that the JUI-F has established a militant wing, a private militia/Razakar force named ‘Ansar-ul-Islam’ to provide security to marchers for the Azadi March scheduled for October 27, 2019 and proposed sit-in in Islamabad from October 31, 2019.” According to the summary, a copy of which is available with Dawn, Ansar-ul-Islam is

capable of functioning as a military organisation, which is a violation of Article 256 of the Constitution. The ministry said Ansar-ul-Islam was organised, trained and equipped and it was capable of being used to display physical force in promoting Azadi March and objectives of the JUI-F. The summary said that the uniformed force, carrying batons and sticks with wrapped barbed wire under a politico-religious party, apparently aims at challenging the writ of the government. It said the rehearsals and march pasts carried out by the said force during a workers convention recently held in Peshawar, pledging allegiance to the top JUI-F leadership, has stirred fear among the general public and it is being seen as a private armed militia/combating force to confront the law enforcement agencies.“It is feared that the said private militant force, reportedly around 80,000 all over Pakistan, may sabotage public peace and create disorder and anarchy across the

country during the planned Azadi March and other political activities by JUI-F.” The interior ministry had also expressed concerns that the private militia could be equipped with other objects, including arms and ammunition. Ansar-ul-Islam posed a real, present and severe threat to the peace and tranquillity of Islamabad and the four provinces, it added. The summary had also given the reference of the National Action Plan that prohibits militant outfits and armed gangs from operating in the country. The ministry had referred to Article 146(1) of the Constitution which allows the federal government to delegate any of its powers to the provinces, conditionally or unconditionally, with the consent of the provincial governments. It had asked the federal cabinet to authorise it to seek consent from the provinces so that the process of abolishing/banning Ansar-ulIslam could be initiated. Source: .dawn.com

Cabinet approves summary to ban JUI-F’s ‘militant wing’: sources

The federal cabinet on Monday approved a summary seeking a ban on the “militant wing” of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), sources in the cabinet division said. According to the sources, the summary, moved by the interior ministry, was approved through circulation just a day ahead of a cabinet meeting. The government took the measure to avoid a discussion on the matter in the cabinet, the sources added.

Misbah names young pace bowlers for T20, Test series against Australia

Chief selector and head coach Misbahul Haq on Monday announced the 16-member squads for the upcoming Twenty20 and Test series against Australia in a press conference in Lahore. The T20 team will be captained by batsman Babar Azam, while the Test team will be led by Azhar Ali. Speaking to reporters, Misbah said that the only way to defeat Australia was “to play aggressive cricket” and the board while selecting players for the squad had kept that in mind. He said that the board included some “young and exciting” players in both the 20-overs format and Test series. The T20 squad will travel to Sydney on October 26 and will play a warm-up match on October 31 before the series. Players in the Test squad will leave for Perth after the fifth round of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy, which will be played from October 28-31. The Test squad will play two warm-

up matches before the series begins. Pakistan will play three T20s against Australia, the first of which will be held on November 3 in Sydney. The second T20 will be played in Canberra on November 5, while the third in Perth on November 8. The first Test will be played from November 21-25 in Brisbane, while the second will be held in Adelaide from November 29 till December 3. As announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) earlier, Sarfaraz Ahmed was not included in either squad. Fast bowler Hasan Ali was also left out because he is under a rehab programme after his back injury. Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad, who had been included in the T20 team for the series against Sri Lanka, have also been excluded. The chief selector also decided to keep Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik out of the squads. The squad for the 20-overs format includes:

Babar Azam (c), Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Imamul Haq, Shadab Khan, Moosa Khan, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Rizwan, Wahab Riaz, Khushdil Shah, and Usman Qadir. The squad for the Test series includes: Azhar Ali (c), Abid Ali, Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Imamul Haq, Imran Khan senior, Iftikhar Ahmed, Kashif Bhatti, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan, Moosa Khan, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood and Yasir Shah. Sarfaraz removal due to poor form Speaking about Sarfaraz’s removal, Misbah said that the sole reason for the former skipper’s removal from the T20 and Test squads was his poor form. “Strange theories are popping up on the media [regarding Sarfaraz’s removal]. It is a simple thing.

“We have always backed Sarfaraz. He is a good enough player, he has done a lot for Pakistan [...] but this decision [to remove him] was taken due to his form recently.” Talking about Sarfaraz’s future, he said, “I think it is just the matter of regaining his form. As soon as his form is restored. I think the doors are open. There is no conspiracy or any such thing in the matter. It is a straightforward thing. I think it is a clear message for Sarfaraz and others as well.” Source: .dawn.com

Why Kashmiris Observe 27th October as “BLACK DAY”? the document is lost and the announcement since January 1989 till 19th September 2019

By: M Raza Malik Background ctober 27 is the darkest day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and the Kashmiris living on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world observe it as Black Day. This year, the day is being observed in the backdrop of India’s illegal and unconstitutional move of scraping special status of occupied Kashmir and annexing it on August 05, 2019. India put the occupied territory under military siege and imposed curfew, restrictions and communication blackout which was continuing even after several weeks when this write-up was written. It was on October 27 in 1947, when India had sent its troops to Jammu and Kashmir and illegally occupied it in total violation of the Indian Independence Act and Partition Plan and against the aspirations of the Kashmiri 0people. According to the Partition Plan, the Indian British Colony was to be divided into two sovereign states – Pakistan and India. The Hindu-majority areas were to constitute India while the Muslim-majority areas of Western provinces and east Bengal were to be included in Pakistan. At the end of British suzerainty over Indian sub-continent in 1947, more than 550 Princely States had become independent but with a choice to accede either to Pakistan or India. However, India illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir by military invasion. Being a Muslim-majority state, with 87% Muslim population, Jammu and Kashmir had a natural tendency to accede to Pakistan. However, the evil designs of the Hindu ruler of Kashmir and the leaders of Indian National Congress and Britain led to the creation of the Kashmir dispute, which continues to haunt the peace and stability of the entire South Asia even after the passage of more than seven decades. India claims that it signed ‘Instrument of Accession’, which was drafted in Delhi and presented to the then ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh, on October 26. However, a prominent British historian, Alistair Lamb, challenging the Indian invasion in Kashmir, in his book “The Birth of Tragedy” wrote that the successive events after the partition of the united India strongly suggested that Indian troops had invaded Kashmir prior to the signing of the Instrument of Accession. He argued that this has been the sole reason that the Indian government never made the so-called document public at any international forum. This was corroborated by noted Kashmiri researchers, Abdul Majid Zargar and Basharat Hussain Qazilbash. They have proved that the “Instrument of Accession” was fake and no such genuine document ever existed. Even Indian Archives Department has now declared that

O

Kashmir

has put question marks on the very existence of the document. Kashmir in the United Nations The Indian occupation faced stiff resistance from the people of Kashmir who launched a mass struggle against it. The Kashmiris’ resilience forced India to knock the doors of the UN Security Council on 1st January 1948, seeking help of the World Body to settle the dispute. Successive resolutions passed by the UNSC and accepted by both India and Pakistan nullified the Indian invasion and called for settlement of the Kashmir dispute by referring to the Kashmiri people to ascertain their aspirations through an impartial plebiscite to be conducted in Jammu and Kashmir under the UN’s supervision. However, Indian rulers later backed away from their commitments and declared Jammu and Kashmir an integral part of India. Modi-led communal government moved a step further and illegally merged the territory into Indian union through the August 05 move. Kashmiris’ revolt against Indian rule The failure of all the efforts aimed at resolving the Kashmir dispute through peaceful means since 1947 caused severe resentment and anger among the Kashmiris and they intensified their freedom struggle in 1989 to secure their right to self-determination. This movement pushed the Indian authorities to the wall, forcing them to sit around the negotiation table with Pakistan. However, the fact remains that India had always been averse to the negotiations to settle the dispute and present Indian leaders – like their predecessors – have not responded positively to Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan’s repeated offers for dialogue. Mass uprisings In 2008 the Kashmiris’ struggle to get rid of Indian bondage took a new turn. They started taking to the streets in large numbers and expressing their anti-India and pro-liberation sentiments in a peaceful manner. This mass uprising continued for three consecutive years. The extrajudicial murder of a young liberation leader, Burhan Muzaffar Wani, on July 08, 2016 by Indian troops triggered another mass uprising in occupied Kashmir. People in large numbers hit the streets in every nook and corner of the occupied territory on daily basis, demanding their right to self-determination. But most of the time during all these mass protests, Indian forces’ personnel used brute force on protesters, killing hundreds of Kashmiris and injuring thousands others. Indian state terrorism New Delhi has exhausted all its resources during the past seven decades to intimidate the people of occupied Kashmir into submission but failed in its nefarious designs. DIWALI !

D

iwali, or Dipawali, is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali)of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects us from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. Diwali, celebrated in October or November each year, this year it will be on October 27, originated as a harvest festival that marked the last harvest of the year before winter. India was an agricultural society where people would seek the divine blessing of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, as they closed their accounting books and prayed for success at the outset of a new financial year. Today this practice extends to

businesses all over the Indian subcontinent, which mark the day after Diwali as the first day of the new financial year. Indians celebrate with family gatherings, glittering clay lamps, festive fireworks, strings of electric lights, bonfires, flowers, sharing of sweets, and worship to Lakshmi. Some believe that Lakshmi wanders the Earth looking for homes where she will be welcomed. People open their doors and windows and light lamps to invite Lakshmi in. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith: Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs. Hindus interpret the Diwali story based upon where they live: •In northern India they celebrate the story of King Rama’s return to Ayodhya after he

martyred 95,444 innocent Kashmiris. Since the killing of Burhan Wani alone, Indian troops have killed 1,037 Kashmiris, tortured 27,739, arrested 12,010 and molested 933. During this period, at least 10,298 people have suffered pellet injuries and 147 of them have lost their eyesight in both eyes while 215 in one eye. However, all these brutalities have failed to suppress the Kashmiris’ resolve for freedom. India’s 5th August onslaught Modi government has put the regional as well as global peace at stake by abrogating Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP government took the extreme step via a presidential order that superseded a 1954 proclamation, which had added Article 35-A to the constitution. The announcement regarding the repeal of the Article 370 was made by the Indian Home Minister, Amit Shah, in Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He also introduced a bill in the Parliament to bifurcate occupied Kashmir. The bill was passed later under which the territory will be divided into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. After repealing the Article 370, India placed the occupied territory under strict lockdown. Millions of Kashmiris were confined to their homes while thousands were arrested. Continued curfew, restrictions and communication blackout led to humanitarian crisis in occupied Kashmir. Pakistan’s support to Kashmir cause History stands testimony to the fact that Pakistani leadership and people have always supported the Kashmiris’ just liberation struggle. Prime Minister, Imran Khan, since assuming his office in August 2018 has time and again warned that the Kashmir dispute and India’s recent actions in occupied Kashmir could lead a nuclear war if the world does not work for the settlement of the lingering dispute. Army Chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, has declared at several occasions that Pakistan army and nation will go to any extent in support of the people of occupied Kashmir and would fulfill its commitment towards Kashmir till last bullet, soldier and breath. The fact remains that despite facing the worst Indian military aggression for supporting the Kashmiris during the past several decades, Pakistan never gave up its support to the Kashmiris and continues to advocate resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with their will. Encouraging developments The grave situation of occupied Kashmir following India’s August 05 move forced the UN Security Council to convene a special consultative session to discuss the matter. This was for the first time in fifty years that the World Body held an exclusive meetdefeated Ravana by lighting rows of clay lamps. •Southern India celebrates it as the day that Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. •In western India the festival marks the day that Lord Vishnu, the Preserver (one of the main gods of the Hindu trinity) sent the demon King Bali to rule the nether world. In all interpretations, one common thread rings true—the festival marks the victory of good over evil. Non-Hindu communities have other reasons for celebrating the holiday: •In Jainism, it marks the nirvana or spiritual awakening of Lord Mahavira on October 15, 527 B.C. •In Sikhism it marks the day that Guru Hargobind Ji, the Sixth Sikh Guru was freed from imprisonment. •Five Days of Diwali •On the first day of Diwali, people consider it auspicious to spring clean the home and shop for gold or kitchen utensils.

ing on Kashmir. The holding of this session rejected India’s claim that Kashmir is its internal matter rather it testified the fact that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally-recognised dispute concerning the right to self-determination of Kashmiris. World leaders and organisations including UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, US President Donald Trump, French President Amanuel Macron, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, European Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch expressed concerns over the grave human rights situation following India’s inhuman actions in the occupied territory. UN Chief Antonio Guterres and US President Donald Trump have offered mediation to settle the Kashmir dispute. Even Indian people like opposition leaders, Rahul Gandhi, P Chidambaram, Shashi Tharoor, Priyanka Gandhi, Sitaram Yechuri, D Raja, Sharad Yadav and Manoj Jha, journalists, Barkha Datt and Nirupama Subramanian, as well as Nobel laureate, Dr Amartya Sen, criticised the imposition of continued curfew, restrictions an communication blockade in occupied Kashmir. Conclusion These are the reasons of the observance of October 27 as Black Day by the Kashmiris all across the globe. The observance is aimed at reminding the world of its obligations towards resolving the Kashmir dispute for the peace and stability in South Asia and the world at large. At the same time, it is intended to send a loud and clear message to New Delhi that the Kashmiris reject its illegal occupation of their homeland and that they will continue their struggle till they achieve their inalienable right to self-determination promised to them by India and the international community. After India’s action to change the disputed status and demographic composition of occupied Kashmir, the observance of October 27 as Black Day has become more important for the Kashmiris to send a loud and clear message to India and the world community that they would never accept India’s subjugation and would not rest till they achieved their cherished goal of freedom from it. •On the second day, people decorate their homes with clay lamps and create design patterns called rangoli on the floor using colored powders or sand. •The third day is the main day of the festival when families gather together for Lakshmi puja, a prayer to Goddess Lakshmi followed by mouth-watering feasts and firework festivities. •The fourth day is the first day of the new year when friends and relatives visit with gifts and best wishes for the season. •On the last day of Diwali, brothers visit their married sisters who welcome them with love and a lavish meal. http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/
