THE so-called Azadi March is finally under way in Islamabad. Led by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the protest march has already stirred the political landscape of the country. It is the third major agitation in the capital after the PTI and Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan sieges. The latter two achieved little but still aggravated the chronic political instability in the country. While a debate on the actors and influencers of the earlier agitation movements has eluded our political discourse, a new movement has emerged, which some consider to be a sequel of previous adventures — but with new faces. However, Maulana Fazlur Rehman has succeeded to a great extent in corroborating the impression that this is his own, independent movement. No one can one deny the need and importance of political stability, especially when the country is facing a major economic challenge. But political stability cannot be manufactured artificially. Silencing the opposition or critical voices may delay the chaos, but eventually creates a void that extra-constitutional forces want to fill. A desire to eliminate political forces thus will not work in the long run. Despite all the efforts made by the establishment to ‘manufacture’ stability and give the impression of a harmonious civil-military relationship, the performance of the PTI government remains unimpressive. Good governance could have averted the prevalent political uncertainty. Instead, the present governance record has fuelled public anger. The maulana’s Azadi March has created space for the voices of dissent, and has even got unprecedented support from liberal segments of society. Apart from the theories about the real motives of the march, and the probable support of sections of the establishment, the maulana has
capitalised on some relevant factors which are the outcome of recent political developments. The first factor is the divided and underpressure opposition, the second is the weak performance of the government, and the third constitutes the growing anti-establishment sentiments in the new madressah generation. Maulana Fazlur Rehman is considered to be the most pragmatic political leader in the country, and like any other leader has the ability to maximise advantages for his party in unfavourable environments. Though he and Prime Minister Imran Khan have a history of confrontation, and the maulana has also declared that the last elections were rigged, he is striving to take advantage of the weakness of the opposition led by the PPP and PML-N to consolidate his own political capital. The PML-N and the PPP, the two
An aspect of the Azadi March is the growing anti-establishment sentiment in the new madressah generation. major opposition parties, have been under immense pressure since the takeover of the PTI government and are struggling to deal with the situation in their own ways. The opposition bloc, led by Shahbaz Sharif, is trying to defuse the pressure through non-confrontational approaches, which is a pragmatic political approach in their view. Their pragmatism has, at least, created some space for their leader to be able to lead the opposition from the front, especially when the government’s performance is not satisfactory. But neither party has gained anything from its non-confrontational approach, which has provided a perfect opportunity to the maulana. It,

Global Citizen’! To be a Global Citizen is the most important way of establishing the peace on earth. First and foremost requirement is to be a Citizen of the ‘Spiritual World’ of our Creator GOD and follow HIS ways of peace, pluralism, ethics and moral values. Every righteous human being believer of One Creator of the Universe is supposed to be a ‘Global Citizen’ of the Spiritual world, to become aware of the problems of others, becomes a good Samaritan and a human rights activist, who are fully aware of the Creator’s creation of different color humans, different tribes with their own tribal ID. Giving them a helping hand saying: “your problem is my problem”; whether it is a Jew, Hindu or Muslim, a Samaritan doesn’t look at your color, or ask your religious status. Violating human rights, depriving them of normal living, not fulfilling their daily requirement of food, Shelter, and clean water, is the sinful act. Universal Messenger Muham-
however, remains to be seen who will have the last laugh. Ever since the last two general elections, the JUI-F has been building its political capital on an anti-establishment stance. Though it has not succeeded much in converting this into electoral success, it has built upon its strategy to resonate with the growing anti-establishment sentiment in madressahs. In recent years, madressahs have emerged as a major force in Pakistani politics. Their expansion and influence are increasing in the lower-income to medium-income groups, and the process is fast in small towns and the peripheries of urban centres and provinces. The madressah generations belong to the marginalised segments of society and geographical regions. Recent studies show that their sense of grievance against an unequal distribution of resources is playing a critical role in their po-
litical awakening. Until recently, the direction of their anger largely remained sectarian-oriented, but as the state’s tolerance is decreasing and space for sectarian and extremist groups shrinking in seminaries, the madressah youth is becoming more attracted to political activism. For instance, despite the calls of prominent Deobandi religious scholars to not participate in political activities, the madressah youth are still joining the Azadi March. The Jamaat-i-Islami also has an opportunity to cash in on the growing anger among the lower middle classes and madressah students, but the party is fast losing its strength because of its vague political policies. The JUI-F is the beneficiary of
the JI’s miscalculations, apart from its own constituencies and support base, cultivated through the madressah network. Thus the JUI-F’s anti-establishment stance was to address the anger of the madressah generation, which gets a sense of purposefulness through such activities. Maulana Fazlur Rehman has also assured them that he is the true custodian of the Deoband religious legacy and that of the parent JUI’s political legacy. He knew that he could capitalise on sub-national sentiments among Pakhtun youth in the erstwhile tribal areas of KP, as well as in Balochistan and Karachi, to drag them into the Azadi March. But it remains to be seen if he can dent ethnic nationalist movements. It can be argued that a fertile ground already existed due to the mistakes of the establishment and the PTI government, and the maulana has just taken advantage of it. However, it is uncertain what exactly he will achieve. His political profile may increase, but only a bit, because so far Mian Nawaz Sharif is the undisputed leader representing anti-establishment sentiments. Upcoming events will reveal more, but the establishment and political forces still have a few lessons to learn from the developing scenario. The establishment has to understand that the weak opposition cannot guarantee political stability; rather, it will create space for conservative religious parties. Political parties, particularly in the opposition, have a lot to learn from this; first and foremost, they have to review their ‘pragmatic approach’ with the focus on the public’s pulse. If they really stand for civilian and parliamentary supremacy, they have to negotiate within themselves to increase their collective strength. By: Muhammad Amir Rana

The major unforgivable sin is to ignore the Creator and replace HIM by human gods.. Most mind boggling is that in this century of advanced technology, some are still unaware of the existence of the Higher Power the Almighty Lord GOD of the Universe. In fact I myself too was completely ignorant of the Divine authority and never heard of Allah nor knew about HIS final Revelation the Al-Quran. I came to know HIM after my conversion to Islam, and qualified to be a ‘Muslim’. As a Divine law only after an oath of allegiance to one’s Creator, accepting HIS given religion Islam and Quran, then only one would qualify to obtain the special trade mark title ‘Muslim’, which is in fact bestowed by the Creator for those who believe in HIM, be obedient to HIM and HIS commandments. Chaudhrys reach out to Fazl to break deadlock with PTI govt Tens of thousands of followers of Maulana Fazal-ur Rehman have gathered in Islamabad, calling for the resignation of what they say is an illegitimate government. Pakistan’s prime minister has rejected demands that he step down. Other opposition parties have supported the anti-government protest but rejected taking it inside Pakistan’s capital. The government on Monday reached out to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, sending two separate delegations to his residence in Islamabad to break an impasse in the wake of the opposition’s ‘Azadi March’. A government delegation, led by former prime minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain met Fazl on Monday night, hours after government’s negotiating team, led by Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak, held talks with the Rehbar Committee and discussed their demands. The meeting between Fazl and Hussain was also attended by Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervaiz Elahi, Senator Talha Mehmood, provincial minister Hafiz Ammar Yasir and opposition Rehbar Committee Convenor Akram Durrani. Talking to the media on the occasion, Elahi said that he had come for reconciliation and expressed the hope that all issues would be resolved amicably. He added that he would apprise Prime Minister Imran Khan about their talks with the JUI-F chief. Earlier, the government’s negotiating team and the opposition’s Rehbar Committee sat face-to-face on Monday. However, the head of the government team, Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak, and his counterpart in the Rehbar Committee, Akram Durani, indicated that neither side signalled any sign of conceding any ground. The Rehbar Committee presented the opposition’s four demands, including resignation of Prime Minister Imran Khan and fresh elections in the country without the supervision of the military. The government side demanded of the committee to end the sit-in. The talks were held at the Islamabad residence of Fazl. The government’s team also included Speaker Asad Qaiser, Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood, Religious Affairs Minister Noorul Haq Qadri and former finance minister Asad Umar. According to sources, the government side sought an end to the ‘Azadi March’. Khattak said that the government was willing to listen to the opposition’s conditions but the demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Imran Khan was a
non-serious one. “About the opposition’s allegations of rigging in the 2018 election, investigation can be carried out by the relevant forums,” a source quoted the government negotiators as telling the Rehbar Committee. Durrani, the Convenor of the Rehbar Committee, told reporters after the meeting that both sides discussed at length each other’s demands and now they would hold another round of talks on Tuesday (today) after consulting their respective leaderships. “The Rehbar Committee put forth their old demands,” Durrani told reporters. “Both sides debated them at length. It has been agreed that both sides will meet again on Tuesday. The government side will bring its reply at 3pm today.” On the occasion, Khattak expressed his pleasure that there was no violation of the agreement between the authorities and the march leaders. “Today, we heard [their] demands. We will talk to our leaderships and will meet again tomorrow (today). Hopefully, we will reach some conclusion soon.” The talks were held after both sides held their separate high-level parleys in the federal capital. The opposition parties gathered in an All Parties Conference (APC) convened by the JUI-F, while Prime Minister Imran chaired a meeting of parliamentary party of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The participants agreed to keep the option of talks with government open. They also decided to continue to hold their consultations, the sources said. According to a private TV channel, Prime Minister Imran chaired a meeting of parliamentary party of the PTI and its allies. During the meeting, Imran clarified that government was not part of any deal and that there would be no compromise on corruption cases. “Our stance is clear that no one will get NRO,” the channel quoted the prime minister as telling the participants of the meeting, while referring to an amnesty granted to the politicians by then military ruler Pervez Musharraf 12 years ago. The meeting rejected the opposition’s demand for resignation of the prime minister. The PTI parliamentary party reposed full confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan and assured him of its full support. Imran said that the opposition wanted anarchy in the country but “we must promote government’s stance”. He added that the opposition would not be allowed to derail the progress and “we will face them in political arena”
1,100 Indian Sikhs arrive at Punja Sahib in religious procession TAXILA: More than a thousand Indian Sikhs arrived in Gurdwara Punja Sahib in Hassanabdal around midnight on Sunday as part of the Nagar Kirtan, a religious procession held to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism. The gurdwara was decorated with colourful lights and pilgrims performed various rituals including Matha Taki, Ashnan and exchanging gifts. Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) Deputy Secretary Shrines Imran Gondal said that more than 1,100 Sikhs crossed the border through Wagah on Oct 31 via Ludhiana and Amritsar. He said they visited Gurdwara Janamasthan, Nankana Sahib, Gurdwara Sacha Sodda Farooqabad and other temples, and the pilgrimage will conclude at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, where a gold palanquin ‘Palki Sahib’ will be installed. “Around 1,300 visas issued for the Nagar Kirtan are over and above the contingent covered under the Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines 1974 between Pakistan and India,” he said. “Sikh pilgrims from India visit Pakistan for religious festivals at least four times a year under the framework of the 1974 IndiaPakistan protocol on visits to religious shrines but denial to visit Pakistan to participate in religious rituals despite having valid visas is not understood,” he added. Mr Gondal said the board, in collaboration with the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbhand Committee and the district administration, has made security and accommodation arrangements for Indian and local Sikh yatrees. Speaking to the press, a number of pilgrims hailed the government’s initiative to open the Kartarpur Corridor to facilitate the Sikh community, and lauded Prime Minister Imran Khan for laying the foundation stone for the Baba Guru Nanak University in Nankana Sahib and issuing a commemorative coin on the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Mr Sarna, former president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, praised the opening of the corridor, saying that it was a longstanding desire of the Sikh community to be able to visit one of their holiest sites in Pakistan visa-free. He also thanked the government for constructing a new building at Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore. He said Indian Sikhs were grateful to the government for issuing them the maximum number of visas, adding: “Pakistan is sacred to us and we love it, and we come here with a message of peace and brotherhood.” Pakistan Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Satwant Singh said the teachings of Baba Guru Nanak revolve around peace and humanity. He said the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor was a great gift to the Sikh community, and that Pakistan is a pure land for Sikhs and a second home for the Sikh community around the world.
Attock District Police Officer Shahzad Nadeem Bukhari reviewed security arrangements for the protection of the Sikh pilgrims. He told the media that multilayered security plans have been made to ensure that visiting pilgrims are safe. “The district police will provide foolproof security to Sikh yatrees,” he said, adding: “Around 700 policemen will perform security duties, including four district superintendents, six inspectors, 11 sub-inspectors, 23 assistant sub-inspectors, 33 head constables, 506 constables, 40 women constables and plainclothes officers.” Source:Dawn.com

4 I nt e r n a tion a l Netanyahu announces post-election Iran holds 3 Australian nationals in Tehran prison Rabi ul Awwal 10, 1441H Nov 8, 2019
plan to annex Jordan Valley
reported earlier that two British-Australian women were being kept in Tehran’s Evin prison. Located in the northern part of the capital, Evin prison is notable for keeping political prisoners, dissidents and Iranians with dual nationality accused of plotting against the government. In February, Seyed Emami, a top environmentalist and university professor, died of mysterious circumstances while being held at Evin. British-Iranian national Nazanin ZaghariRatcliffe is also imprisoned there after being convicted in 2016 of conspiring to topple the Iranian leadership. Meanwhile, Australia’s public broadcaster ABC also reported that a third Australian national - the partner of one of the women - had also been arrested. It is unclear where he was being held. It is not clear if the three have been charged. One of the women is reported to have been in detention for up to a year. The news of the detention comes after Australia announced that it would join a US-led mission to protect shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison in August announced a “modest” contribution to the controversial mission -- including a frigate, a P8 maritime surveillance aircraft and support staff -- which will also involve British forces. Earlier this week the Australian government updated its travel advice for Iran to “reconsider your need to travel” and “do not travel” to areas near the border with Iraq and Afghanistan. Already difficult relations with Iran have threatened to boil over since United States President Donald Trump abandoned a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme in 2018. Iran has responded by resuming some prescribed nuclear activities, which it insists are allowed under the framework of the 2015 nuclear agreement. Meanwhile, a rising number of dual nationals have been arrested, in what many see as a ruthless diplomatic strategy. Analysts see the arrests as a tactical ploy to gain leverage, or as part of the murky politics in Iran -- with hardliners in the judiciary and the security apparatus scuttling the more conciliatory approach of moderates. South Korea and North Korea have continued to pour resources into modernising their militaries despite a frenzy of diplomacy since 2018, data shows, creating a point of tension that has sharpened as talks have stalled. Military build-ups on both sides of the heavilyfortified border between the two nations have come to the forefront with recent short-range missile launches by North Korea, developing an arsenal it says is necessary to defend against new South Korean weapons. On Wednesday, North Korean state media reported that leader Kim Jong Un had personally supervised on Tuesday the test-firing of a large multiple-rocket launch system, a type of weapon analysts say threatens forces in South Korea. Pyongyang has sharply criticised military drills between the United States and South Korea as well as the latter’s defence procurements - including an aircraft carrier, stealth fighters and spy satellites - as undisguised preparations for a pre-emptive attack. In a commentary on Friday, North Korean state news agency KCNA said South Korea’s pursuit of new weapons systems was an “unpardonable act of perfidy” that threatened to undermine peace on the peninsula. South Korea’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) did not respond to requests for comment.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s administration has committed billions of additional dollars to the country’s defence budget, which is already among the largest in the world. In 2018, South Korea’s military expenditures reached $43.1bn, an increase of seven percent compared with 2017, according to the MND. It was the biggest single-year jump since an increase of 8.7 percent in 2009. In July the MND announced South Korea would build a light aircraft carrier, the country’s first. And in August it unveiled a plan to spend about $239bn more between 2020 and 2024. About $85bn of the future budget is earmarked for arms improvements, representing an average 10.3 percent year-on-year increase. “Given the recent uncertain security environment, the government is investing heavily in strengthening its defence capabilities,” the MND said when the plan was announced. By 2023, the “force enhancement” budget will account for more than 36 percent of total defence spending, up from about 31 percent this year, according to South Korea’s 2018 Defense White Paper. The planned aircraft carrier is expected to accommodate vertical-landing F-35B stealth fighter jets. Among the other weapons on Seoul’s shopping list are new missile defence systems; three more destroyers equipped with the cuttingedge Aegis radar system; spy satellites and high-altitude reconnaissance drones; anti-submarine helicopters; maritime patrol aircraft; submarines capable of firing cruise and ballistic missiles; and a warship armed with guided missiles. “Neither Korea wants a full-blown confrontation, but both want to make sure they have the weapons platforms and defence resources available in the event a flare-up happens,” said Daniel DePetris, a fellow at Defense Priorities, a Washington-based think-tank. South Korea military spending spikes, has North Korea worried
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to annex the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank if he wins next week’s general election, drawing sharp criticism from Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia. “Today, I announce my intention, after the establishment of a new government, to apply Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea,” Netanyahu said in a speech broadcast live on Israeli TV on Tuesday. That step, he said, could be taken “immediately after the election if I receive a clear mandate to do so from you, the citizens of Israel”. The Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea constitute almost 30 percent of the West Bank. Some 65,000 Palestinians and about 11,000 illegal Israeli settlers live in the area - most of which is under Israeli military control in what is referred to as Area C. Netanyahu - who is fighting for his political life in a closely contested election - reaffirmed the pledge to annex all Jewish settlements throughout the West Bank, but said such a move would not be made before publication of a long-awaited United States peace plan and consultations with President Donald Trump. “There is no change in United States policy at this time,” a US official said when asked whether the White House supported Netanyahu’s move. “We will release our Vision for Peace after the Israeli election and work to determine the best path forward to bring long-sought security, opportunity and stability to the region.” In 2017, Trump decided to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, reversing decades of US policy. The Palestinian leadership has since declared the US cannot be an honest peace broker in negotiations with Israel. Palestinian President Mahmoud Ab-
bas said in a statement “all signed agreements with Israel and the obligations resulting from them would end” if Netanyahu went through with the move. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called the Israeli leader “a prime destroyer of the peace process”. “The Palestinian territory is not part of Netanyahu’s election campaign,” Shtayyeh said. Arab League foreign ministers condemned Netanyahu’s plan, saying it would undermine any chance of progress towards Israeli-Palestinian peace. Saudi Arabia said it considered the declaration a”violation of international law and a “very dangerous escalation against the Palestinians”. It called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation foreign ministers to discuss the move. The 2,400-square kilometre Jordan Valley, which Palestinians seek for the eastern perimeter of a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, stretches from the Dead Sea in the south to the Israeli city of Beit Shean in the north. Israel has long said it intends to maintain military control there under any peace agreement with the Palestinians. It captured the West Bank in a 1967 war. Annexing settlements would likely spell the end of any lingering hopes of establishing a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Netanyahu made no mention of what he would do with the territory’s more than two million Palestinian residents. Tamer Qarmout, from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, told Al Jazeera that Netanyahu’s announcement - if it came to fruition - would “start a new phase in this conflict and it will destroy any hopes of a twostate solution”. “The peace process is already clinically dead, this will literally end it,” he said. his is the column by eminent Arab media figure and Editor in Chief of Saudi Gazette newspaper Khaled AlMaeena on Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), published by Saudi Gazette. Not a day passes without some depressing news from one Muslim country or another. Either it is a terrorist attack in Afghanistan or the Syrian Air Force bombing its own people. Iraq continues to be hit with violence of the most gruesome kind. Mali now joins the list of Muslim countries facing internal turmoil and external intervention. People continue to be killed in Pakistan either in drone attacks by the US or in intersectarian strife. Why?I think no one who reflects on the worsening conditions in the Muslim world can fail to ask these questions: Is this the community envisaged by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was born on 12 Rabi Al-Awwal, and is this the world we would have witnessed if Muslims had proved true to their religion and had lived according to the guidance provided by their Prophet (pbuh) and the teachings of the Holy Qur’an?Muslims may complain of many things but they cannot complain that they have no role model. They have the perfect role model in their Prophet (pbuh). There is no other prophet on whose life so much light has been shed. Living in the full glare of history, his sayings and actions have been documented as no other prophet’s have. Recorded in minute detail, their authenticity has not been questioned by fair-minded scholars and honest historians. It is extremely difficult for the Muslims of today to imagine and much less to endure the hardships that the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions underwent. In the ninth year of his mission, the Prophet (pbuh) — having been persecuted and terrorized by his people in Makkah — headed for Taif, home of the Banu Thaqif tribe. If anything, he was treated even more rudely by the tribal elders, who told him to leave the place and even sent street urchins after him to beat him and pelt him with stones. He bled profusely. His entire body was covered with blood and his sandals became clogged to his feet because of the severity of the beating and torture he was subjected to. Those who would resort to violence at what they perceive to be insults to the Prophet (pbuh) and Islam should realize that he
religion? Have they not read about the Prophet’s attitude and behavior toward all those around him including the ones who abused him and tried to kill him? Do people in authority follow the precepts of the Prophet (pbuh)? If they did, so many Muslim countries would not be in ferment, providing an opportunity for outsiders to intervene in their affairs or to set one section of the people against another. Are our bureaucrats punctual and sincere? Do they cater to the public’s needs? The functioning of government departments throughout the Muslim world in the holy month of Ramadan tells its own story. Most of our problems are self-inflicted. There is no point in crying that enemies are plotting our destruction or hatching conspiracies against us. Of course that is what enemies everywhere have been doing throughout history. The question is whether we should help enemies by our own actions or inaction. Take, for example, scientific progress and economic development. Muslims once led Europe in science and the pursuit of knowledge. All experts agree that without the Arabic numbering system, which included decimals and the cipher (zero), modern science and business would have been impossible. The first university of Europe was established by Muslims in Spain. From the 8th to the 10th centuries, Baghdad flourished as the world’s most civilized city. Its university was attended by 6,000 students from all over the world. Aristotle and Plato were rediscovered by Muslim scholars who translated many Greek manuscripts into Arabic. Even non-Muslim historians admit that Muslims were the originators of modern chemistry, meteorology, mathematics, sociology and geography. Muslim surgeons were also the first to dissect the human body. The first known telescope was built for a Muslim ruler. We should remember that we are the followers of a Prophet (pbuh) who said that one should seek knowledge even if it means traveling as far as China. Today, as we stumble through a confused and turbulent world and as uncertainly and depression grip large parts of the Muslim world, we should go back to the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh). This is the only way to get rid of the social ills from which we suffer. Unfortunately, we say one thing and practice something else. The Holy Qur’an says: “Allah will never change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.” Surah Al-Ra’d - Ayah 11 (13:11). Let us teach ourselves and our children about the life of the Prophet (pbuh) with a firm resolve that we will use it in our daily lives. Let us be more tolerant, more forgiving and show compassion to all people irrespective of their race or religion. This is the best way to show our love and respect for our Prophet (pbuh). This article is written by Editor in Chief of Saudi Gazette newspaper Khaled AlMaeena
bore no ill will toward his tormentors. Instead, he made a heartrending invocation to God Almighty beseeching mercy for the people who had persecuted him. Those Muslims who are intolerant and become violent at the slightest provocation are doing a great disservice to their religion and the principle of tolerance it espouses. When Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) noticed the continued absence of a woman in Makkah who used to insult him and throw garbage on him as he walked the streets, he asked people about her and visited her after learning that she had fallen ill. Over 14 centuries have gone by since he left us, but his message still lives on. It can lead us from darkness to light as it once led the Arabs from backwardness to the heights of success and glory. His life was one of mercy, compassion, care, consideration, kindness and tolerance for all. His sayings, known as Hadiths, bear testimony to this. One particular theme he was never tired of stressing concerns the rights of women. You should look at what the Prophet (pbuh) said and did in order to realize what an honorable and respectable position Islam affords women. However, it is sad to see that many Muslims ignore this or behave in a way that gives a very wrong impression about women’s position in an Islamic society. “Fear Allah in respect of women,” the Prophet (pbuh) said. On another occasion he said: “The best of you are they who are best to their wives.” Here is another Hadith: “A Muslim must not hate his wife, and if he be displeased with one bad quality in her, let him be Nov 8-22, 2019 Rabi ul Awwal 10-24, 1441H pleased with one that is good.” AccordIsl Dt Day Date Fajar Sunrise Dhuhr Asr-Shafi Asr Hanafi Maghrib Isha ing to him, “The more civil and kind a Isl. applies to become registered party
Roberts ran for the party for the second time, first in Victoria in 2015 and then in Halifax in 2019, where she came third with 14.5 per cent of the vote. “This is a position I take on somewhat reluctantly,” Roberts told reporters. “For now in the Green Party the focus is to start the search for the person who will take the Green Party into the next stage. This is not a replacement for Elizabeth May, I don’t think anybody would be up for applying for that job.” Roberts will now focus on how to expand the party’s membership in time for the leadership vote, encouraging more of the 1.1 million voters who cast their ballot for a Green candidate in the 2019 election to sign up, as the party membership sits at around 20,000 at the moment. She made this announcement flanked by her two Green Party caucus colleagues MPs Paul Manly, and Jenica Atwin, as well as Roberts, deputy leader Daniel Green, and May’s husband John Kidder. May said her decision to step down now was done, in part, to follow through on a promise she made to her daughter Cate May Burton after the 2015 election: that the 2019 campaign would be her last at the helm. “I’m very excited to know that I’ll have time with my husband and time with my daughter and my extended family, and that I keep my promises,” May said. She and Kidder got married on Earth Day, April 22. Cate told CTV News Channel she had initially suggested her mother step down out of concern for her work-life balance. “My whole life my mom has been working like nobody’s business, because she’s so driven to help protect
the planet,” she said. “Under her responsibility as leader of the Green Party, I witnessed it go up several notches and I was getting concerned about her well-being, and whether she was going to have any balance, and space in her life for herself.” May also asserted she is “not done yet.” “I’m not stopping my work, the climate crisis is as critical as ever,” May said. In various interviews with CTV News since the election, May has spoken candidly about the unlikelihood that she will still be the leader by the next scheduled federal election in 2023, though with the nature of minority parliaments it’s possible that the next campaign will kick off before then. She recently mused about running for House of Commons Speaker, but for now she won’t be doing that, saying she’d like to run for speaker after the next election. May intends to stay on as the Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands. May said that, in her view, given the unpredictability that comes with minority governments, the sooner the party names her official replacement, the better, adding that while so many people leave politics when they are already being helped out the door, “that’s not happening here.” Cate said her mother’s 13 years as leader of the Green Party have been a valuable experience for the whole family. “It’s been very stressful…but I’ve had an amazing learning experience to be part of Canadian politics from the inside,” she said. “We’ve always been very close, but that relationship has gotten stronger over the years.” Source: CTV News
The group behind the political movement “Wexit” applied to become a registered party Monday, its leader said. Peter Downing told CTV’s Your Morning that Wexit Alberta had taken the first steps to becoming a federal party and filed paperwork with Elections Canada. “We’re sending in over 500 signatures, over double the required 250 signatures,” said the founder. “We’re going to do for Western Canada what the Bloc Quebecois does for Quebec.” Wexit, a portmanteau of “western and exit,” is a western separatist movement that has appeared to be gaining momentum since Justin Trudeau’s Liberals won the 43rd federal election. About 700 people reportedly attended a rally in Edmonton over the weekend where Downing and others were seen wearing blue “Make Alberta Great Again” hats, a nod to U.S. President Donald Trump’s successful 2016 campaign slogan. A Facebook page for the group created in June has more than 30,700 likes. Downing penned an open letter to Alberta Premier Jason Kenney asking for a referendum on separation, which Kenney has said he does not support. “He’s got the opportunity to be the first Prime Minister of Alberta, absolutely. Be a hero. Lead us to the door to our economic liberty, our social stability and our self-determination,” said Downing. “The door is locked from the inside and he has the opportunity to open it for us.” Downing said Wexit Alberta has
three key aims: the unification of western Canadian provinces, elect members of parliament to legislate issues the directly impact the west, and to “bring Western Canadian nations to national forefront.” Actually succeeding in a move to separate is a “complicated and time consuming” task, said University of Saskatchewan Political Science Professor Joseph Garcea. “I’m not sure that this is a serious effort to move in that direction,” he said of the Wexit Alberta movement. “I think that this is more about partisan politics and posturing than it is about separation.” Some criticism of the group has pointed to the Bloc Quebecois’ calls for sovereignty, which have never resulted in a successful bid to separate from the country. Downing countered that that party has been successful in other ways, including what some in the Wexit Alberta group deem to be unfair equalization payments. Quebec was the highest beneficiary of the equalization payment in 2019-20 at $13.1 billion in funds. “A lot of that comes from Alberta. From our perspective it’s a very unfair equalization program. We went through a horrible downturn and are still going through that right now,” said Downing. “For a number of reasons right now western Canadians, and Alberta in particular, are looking into the situation and we really do think that we are going to be better off separate from the ruling authorities in Ottawa.” Source: CTV News

Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies held its 8th Annual Jalsah and Graduation Ceremony
On October 26, after Maghrib Salah, Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies held its 8th Annual Jalsah and Graduation Ceremony at Royal King Palace Hall in Surrey. This year Alhamdulillah with the help of Allah and the support of the community, 4 students graduated as Hafidh ul Qur’an. It was an evening full of beautiful and inspiring recitations of the Holy Qur’an, Nasheeds, Salatalan-Nabi, Islamic plays and speeches all performed by the students of the Madrasah. Shaykh Mohammed Anees Abdul Wahab acknowledged the sacrifices made by students and their parents in the pursuit of Islamic education. He then explained that not only are the students of the Madrasah taught Islamic studies such as learning to read the Qur’an correctly with Tajweed, memorizing verses of the Qur’an, praying and living our lives according to the peaceful practices of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, but they are also taught to be law abiding, peaceful, productive and contributing members of Canadian society. Keeping this in mind, we are pleased to inform the community that our graduates are studying in Universities in various programs. The main event of the night was the Khatmul-Qur’an, the graduation ceremony of completion of the Qur’an. The graduates were taught Islamic Studies by Shaykh Oves and Shaykh Anees and after years of sacrifices and hard work these students completed their Tahfeedh-ul-Qur’an. The amazing
and remarkable aspect is that they completed Tahfeedhul-Qur’an while going to high school just like other boys of their age. Many Scholars of Islam attended and graced the event with their presence. Alhamdulillah this year we were honoured with the presence of Shaykh Imam Dr. Zijad Delic of Ottawa who spoke about the importance of educating our Muslim youth and investing in their future. Guests from the lower mainland and guests from New York, Calgary and other cities attended the event. Dignitaries that attended the event included Member of Parliament Mr. Sukh Dhaliwal and Member of Parliament Mr. Randeep Sarai and leaders of local Muslim organizations. Both Members of Parliament recognized the positive impact of the Institute in the community. Shaykh Mohammed Anees Abdul Wahab informed the audience that the Institute suffers financial difficulties and is in need of assistance to carry on the many programs and services the Institute is offering. He also informed the audience that Darul Qur’an Institute of Islamic Studies is recognized by Canada Revenue Agency as a Registered Charity and Tax Deductible receipts will be issued for donations. He then explained that the Institute is committed to financial transparency and the community is welcome to see the financial records of the Institute. With the help of the Almighty and generous support of the community approximately $40,000 were
raised. At the conclusion of the event the founders of the Institute, Shaykh Mohammed Oves Abdul Wahab and Shaykh Mohammed Anees Abdul Wahab thanked the guests and volunteers and a sumptuous dinner was enjoyed by all in attendance followed by Isha Salah.
Seven hundred school children lead park beautification event to wrap-up Love Where you Live Campaign
Surrey, BC – Mayor Doug McCallum joined over 700 students, parents and teachers from Cambridge Elementary School for a clean-up event today, wrapping up Surrey’s city-wide Love Where You Live Campaign. The initiative, which began in April, called on residents, business owners, schools and community groups to step up and get involved in keeping Surrey clean and welcoming. “The key to our success boils down to the tremendous support we have received from our community,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “Love Where You Live not only resonated with our residents, but it delivered solid results. 5,000 bags of litter have been removed from city streets and parks and more than 13,000 trees and bulbs have been plant-

Across the City, 1,700 street banners were installed and over two thousand feet of decorative streetlights were added to Town Centres. Canadian Senators Group forms to focus on regional interests approach to decisions on legislation and to treat each region equally. The founding members include senators Larry Campbell of British Columbia, Doug Black of Alberta, Robert Black of Ontario, Stephen Greene of Nova Scotia, Diane Griffin of P.E.I., Elaine McCoy of Alberta, David Richards of New Brunswick, Scott Tannas of Alberta, Josée Verner of Quebec, Pamela Wallin of Saskatchewan and Vernon White of Ontario. “What unites us is our approach to the work and the belief that each region should be treated with dignity and respect,” said Campbell, who used to be part of the Independent Senators Group (ISG). “I think a broad-based but smaller group will enable us to do that.” Members come from all parties and regions. A new group is being formed in the Canadian Senate, with 11 like-minded members saying they’re getting together to better represent regional concerns across the country. Senators signing up for the Canadian Senators Group (CSG) said they aren’t looking to whip votes or take over the Red Chamber. Rather, they said they want to become more research-oriented in their
servative caucus to become the founder and interim leader of the CSG after taking time over the summer to reflect on what he described as a tough last session of the Upper House, during which he felt “damage was being done.” Tannas said it was extremely difficult for him to reconcile and accept the passage of C-48, the legislation that bans oil tankers in northern B.C., and C-69, the legislation that overhauls Canada’s environmental assessment process, which is seen by many in Western Canada as anti-pipeline. “What I did notice in those debates is that we were talking past each other a lot and I felt that some of those votes were very, very close,” Tannas said. “If I were a strong, independent voice, could I have influenced better one or two more people? Maybe. That
was one of my considerations, strong considerations.” Tannas said he still supports Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer and remains a loyal party member. “I voted for him and I’d vote for him again tomorrow,” Tannas said. While he said he will continue to advocate for western concerns, Tannas added the CSG is not focused on promoting the interests of any one particular part of the country. “I’m concerned about the vast differences when you go region to region,” Tannas said in an earlier interview with CBC News. “I think we have our job cut out for us in the Senate.” Tannas said group members can vote freely, regardless of political affiliation or membership in the group. The CSG will be capped at 25 members. (Source: CBC news)
Premiers talk strategy for dealing with Liberal minority in a divided country
Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders spoke on the phone Nov 1 for the first time since the federal election to discuss how they would approach relations with the new Liberal minority government. Premiers discussed a range of policy issues, including mental health and addictions, trade, equalization and environmental assessments for major resource projects. The call was convened by Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, who is currently the chair of the Council of the Federation. “Today, I was pleased to chair a conference call with fellow premiers,” said Moe. “As premiers, we recognize the importance of continued engagement at the COF table. The narrow election result has been driving talk of regional fractures within Canada, stoked by the return of the separatist Bloc Québécois and growing signs of western alienation. Relations with the provinces may prove to be one of the most challenging issues for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, given that the Liberals were elected without winning a single seat in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Both provinces have criticized Ottawa for
failing to get the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion built. Trudeau also is being pressed by Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Premier Moe to scrap the carbon tax and revamp the equalization system as first steps toward improving relations with Western Canada. But there are plenty of divisions among the premiers themselves. B.C. Premier John Horgan told CBC News he agreed with Ontario Premier Doug Ford when he expressed his support during the call for increasing immigration to their provinces — an issue on which Quebec Premier François Legault is moving in the opposite direction. And the issue of pipelines pits Quebec and B.C. against Alberta and Saskatchewan. Horgan said the Trans Mountain pipeline project — a major point of contention between Alberta and B.C. — did not come up during the call. The premiers did agree to organize a face-to-face meeting with each other by the end of the year before seeking a First Ministers’ meeting with the prime minister.

Eight new legal clinics will open across B.C. after a cash injection of $2 million from the provincial government. Each clinic will receive a grant of up to $250,000 to hire lawyers and support staff as a way to improve access to justice. “More than a website, more than a handbook, these are people who will actually be in communities helping people work through their problems and potentially helping them in tribunals or courts across the province,” Attorney General David Eby announced Monday. “This investment al-
lows several existing legal advocacy offices to become legal clinics, staffed with experienced lawyers who will offer guidance and support to the most vulnerable members of the communities they serve,” he said at a news conference in Vancouver. Some of the clinics will be specialty clinics offering free legal advice related to specific issues like housing, poverty, immigration, disability and child protection. The first clinic will open in Vancouver through the Tenant Resource and Advi-
sory Centre, designed to help renters with tenancy problems. Exact locations for other clinics are still being finalized, but jobs have already been posted in Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna and Surrey. The grants will be awarded through the non-profit Law Foundation of B.C., which will provide the new clinics with coaching and support. “Legal clinics staffed by lawyers and advocates are a very effective way to help people who cannot afford lawyers to help assist them in their poverty and civil law problems,” said
executive director Josh Paterson. “The investment in these kinds of services is really not very costly in terms of up-front costs and can save so much,” he told reporters. “This is part of a strategy of trying to intervene early with access to justice to stop problems before they get bigger.” The creation of these types of clinics was part of a legal aid review done earlier this year that yielded 25 recommendations.
Vigil marking 72nd anniversary of Black Day for Kashmir
On October 27, 2019 a vigil to commemorate the Black Day for Kashmir was held at Holland Park. The Kashmiri community and their supporters gathered in the evening for this candlelight vigil. Various community members spoke including Gurpreet Singh and Annie Ohana. The main points brought up were: 1. October 27, 1947 marks the ill-fated day when the Indian military subjugated the state of Jammu and Kashmir against the will of its people. “Black Day” which is also called as “Kashmir Black Day is observed every October 27 to mark the illegal incursion into the Valley of Kashmir by India on October 27, 1947. 2. On August 5, the Indian government unilaterally scrapped two related special
provisions in the Indian constitution, Article 370 and Article 35A. Article 370 granted Kashmir autonomy over most of its administrative affairs. Article 35A ensured that only “permanent residents” of the state of Jammu and Kashmir had the right to buy and own property there. This action by the government of India has stripped the Indigenous people of Kashmir of their rights, jeopardized Kashmir’s right to self-determination and escalated the likelihood of violence inflicted by the Indian military’s mobilization. It has also endangered Kashmir’s demography and its fragile ecology. 3. The Indian military is seen as an occupying force by Kashmiris and its soldiers are protected by laws like the Armed Forc-
es Special Powers Act that allow them to perpetrate human rights abuses without consequence. These human rights violations have been well documented by local Kashmiri organizations and international human rights watchdogs like the UN Human Rights Office. 4. Under the false pretext of national security, the Indian government deployed 40,000 armed soldiers to join the 700,000 military personnel permanently stationed in Jammu and Kashmir, which is internationally recognized as a disputed region. 5. In Canada we must do everything we can to raise this issue and call upon the Canadian government to speak up and take action for Human Rights. There is much more that needs to be
done. Plans are being made for the next phase of this campaign. If you are interested in being part of this effort on a personal level or with your organization you can contact Furquan Gehlen at furquan@worldbeyondwar.org or call/text at 604603-8741.

Thousands gather on Beirut’s streets for anti-government protest
Tens of thousands of Lebanese protested on Sunday to keep up a nationwide street movement that has brought down the government, hours after a smaller rally of thousands was held to support the embattled president. Unprecedented cross-sectarian demonstrations have gripped Lebanon since October 17, demanding a complete overhaul of a political system deemed inefficient and corrupt. On Sunday evening, thousands of protesters streamed into the main square carrying Lebanese flags and a flurry of inventive slogans on placards, an AFP correspondent said. “Revolution,” they cried to the rhythm of electronic beats in Martyrs’ Square. “All of them means all of them,” they chanted, calling for political leaders from all sectarian stripes to step down. They also called for a general strike on Monday to pressure political leaders. The protest, the biggest since Tuesday when supporters of the powerful Hezbollah move-
ment broke up the protest camp, followed a rally earlier in the day by supporters of Lebanon’s president, held to counter anti-government protests that have paralysed the country for more than two weeks. President Michel Aoun has been among the main targets of mass protests that aim to sweep from power Lebanon’s entire sectarian and political elite. Prime Minister Saad Hariri resigned last week, meeting a key demand of the protesters, but will stay on in the role of caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed. However, Hezbollah and its allies, who dominate the government, have held their ground without offering any concrete proposals to meet the protesters’ demands. Abir Murad, 37, had come especially from the northern city of Tripoli to take part in Sunday’s protests. “We are all united against the leaders … who haven’t changed anything in this country,” she
said. “We came to say that change is now in the hands of the people.” Draped in white sheets, three demonstrators staged a mock execution of the grievances that pushed them down into the street. Nooses around their limp necks, they bore signs referring to corruption, sectarianism, and the 197590 civil war. Protesters in the capital shouted in support of Shia-majority areas such as Tyre, the stronghold of the Hezbollah movement, which has urged its backers not to protest. “Tyre, Tyre, Tyre. We’re rising up for you,” they chanted. Despite Hezbollah’s warnings, protests were also staged in the southern city itself, the National News Agency reported. People also took to the street in Sunni-majority Sidon and the northern city of Tripoli. Lebanon had come to a standstill for around two weeks until the cabinet resigned on Tuesday, after which protest roadblocks were lifted
and banks re-opened. Protests temporarily petered out as rain hit the capital, but activists vowed to fight on until the rest of their demands were met. Protesters have called for an end to Aoun’s tenure, as well as a drastic change to a political system dominated by the same figures and families since the end of the civil war. Earlier in Beirut, hundreds of men and women took part in a feminist march from the national museum towards the main square. “Our revolution is feminist,” read a banner carried by marchers. “Speak up, end male chauvinism,” protesters chanted to the rhythm of drums. Sarah Bukhari, 28, said she was there to demand equality. “It’s so important there is real social justice and that women’s demands be heard,” she said. Source: Al-Jazeera
Iran breaks further away from crumbling nuclear deal
Iran has taken further steps away from its crumbling nuclear deal with world powers by announcing it is doubling the number of its advanced centrifuges, calling the move a direct result of the United States’ withdrawal from the agreement last year. As well as operating twice as many advanced centrifuges banned by the 2015 accord, Tehran is working on a prototype that is 50 times faster than those allowed by the deal, Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, said on Monday. Salehi said Iran is now operating 60 IR-6 advanced centrifuges. Such a centrifuge can produce enriched uranium 10 times as fast as the first-generation IR-1s allowed under the accord. By starting up these advanced centrifuges, Iran further cuts into the one year that experts
estimate Tehran would need to have enough material for building a nuclear weapon - if it chose to pursue one. Daryl Kimball, director of the US-based Arms Control Association, told Al Jazeera that though Iran was taking worrisome steps, these were quickly reversible if there were to be some diplomatic arrangement to bring both sides back into compliance. “Our interpretation is that Iran is trying to increase the pressure on Britain, France and Germany in particular to find some arrangement that will allow them to sell the oil they were buying when Iran was not under sanctions.” “That requires some level of US support to waive sanctions against European firms by the United States. So far, the US has no agreed to do that.”
Salehi also announced that scientists were working on a prototype he called the IR-9, which worked 50-times faster than the IR-1. Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari reporting from Tehran said the feeling in Iran is that since the US withdrew from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, the remaining signatories - France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Europe and Russia - have yet to uphold their end of the deal. “Salehi stressed that is why Iran is moving forward with its nuclear program,” Jabbari said. “This deal has been on its final legs for the last few months. Various European diplomats have been trying to salvage it by convincing the US and Iran to come back to the negotiating table, but Iran’s position is that until the US lifts its sanctions that it has imposed on the country since last year, they will not come back to any negotiations,” Jabbari said.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Iranian government said on Monday that President Hassan Rouhani will announce further steps away from the accord sometime soon. An announcement had been expected this week. Iran has previously broken through its stockpile and enrichment limitations, trying to pressure Europe to offer it a new deal, more than a year since US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew Washington from the accord. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned that the announcement jeopardised the 2015 nuclear accord, urging Tehran to return to the pact. “Iran has built very advanced centrifuges, which do not comply with the agreement,” Maas told a news conference. “They have announced in early September that they would not comply with the nuclear accord and we think this is unacceptable.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Best Example of Prophet(PBUH) for Youth Today
M
By: Idris Tawfiq
uhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah has full knowledge of all things.” (Al-Ahzab 33:40) Young people today see a lot of pomp and ceremony when it comes to politicians and leaders. It seems today as though the more authority you have, the more the red carpet is laid out for you, the more special attire and finery you are expected to wear, and the more freedom you have to express your opinions - whether they are held up by evidence or not, and no matter how much they may offend others. But let’s take a look at the final Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and see the stark difference between what is now and what was before. “Which one is Muhammad?” So humble was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that strangers looking for him in the mosque in Madinah had to ask this. Sitting in the row of believers for the daily prayers, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), with his simple and modest bearing, could not be distinguished from anyone else. He was so calm, so dignified, and so peaceful that no one could single him out as the leader. Children and youth could approach him to receive a warm greeting or to ask this great, yet humble, man a question or some advice. In quiet prayer he looked like any other simple man. There was no sign here of the great warrior, the skillful negotiator in times of war and peace, the statesman. There was no sign either that this was the man, from among all men, who was chosen to receive the Creator’s final message to mankind. In the mosque his focus was on Allah alone. He was like every Muslim who enters the mosque to pray. And yet, unlike any other Muslim, he had been chosen as the Seal of the Prophets, the most honorable and the noblest of men. He was the one whom Allah selected to guide all mankind. Orphaned by the age of six and born in a relatively unimportant region of the world to a simple family, Muhammad could neither read nor write. When commanded by the Angel Jibreel to recite the first glorious verses of the Qur’an, Muhammad could only respond that he was unable to read or recite them. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had neither power nor wealth. He possessed none of the things that the world considers important. Yet Allah chose him from all men in the world to be what the Qur’an calls “a mercy to mankind.” This is the role that young Muslims should take on in this world that is so full of turmoil and hate. The youth are the standardbearers of the message of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and it is a message of mercy. In his person, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a mercy to all the people on earth. One so kind, so pious, so devout in prayer and obedience to the will of Allah had been chosen as the guide for mankind. We should ask ourselves, how closely are we living our lives according to the message of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). If we are living in his way, no problem will be too great to overcome, our future will appear clear before us, and the challenges of young adulthood will seem small. If young Muslims join in the ranks of the followers of
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), they will be joining the ranks of the merciful, pious, and just people through all the ages, from the beginning of time. Indeed, Allah opens the way for those who sincerely obey Him and His Messenger. Good people should surround themselves with good friends. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was surrounded by people who sought the pleasure of Allah. Ask yourself: Who do you mix with and why? Your friends reflect who you are. At the end of his life, when Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was laid to rest in the earth, his funeral was attended by his heartbroken friends and Companions. They had been with him for so long, many since the time of the first revelation of the Qur’an some 23 years before, and now they were to be left alone, without a guide for the first time in so many years. Imagine yourself living at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); imagine walking in his blessed footsteps. If you follow his Sunnah, you are walking in his footsteps today. His body was not laid to rest in some grand tomb as one might expect for so important and so influential a man. Rather it was placed in the earth beneath the spot where he used to sleep on a simple mat. It fell upon Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him), his friend from before the time of the first revelation, to deliver the funeral sermon. Abu Bakr had to try to make sense out of this tragedy for the crowds assembled before him. At this key moment in the development of Islam, they eagerly awaited what Abu Bakr, the closest friend of the Prophet, would have to say. His words to them were filled with wisdom. “O men,” he said, “if anyone worships Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad is dead. But if anyone worships Allah, then know that Allah is alive and will never die.” Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) told the Muslim faithful that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was the greatest man to have lived but he was not the Lord of all creation. He was a man like all men. And this is what makes Islam so extraordinary. There are now at least one and a half billion Muslims in the world, and we are attentive to what our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said or did. Each one of us proclaims at least five times a day that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. It is the core of our faith. In the same breath in which we declare belief in the One true Lord of mankind and all that exists, we declare belief in His Messenger. The love and reverence which we have for Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is both real and deep. We see him as the gentlest, the kindest, and the sweetest of men, and yet he remains for us precisely that: a man. Neither a god nor a saint. We do not ascribe to our Prophet magical powers. It would be a blasphemy for us to do so. We see him as a simple man, chosen from among men, with the same cares and worries we might have. But in Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) we see that it is possible for us to dedicate all our lives to Allah and to live under His guidance, yet live in the midst of life. Not divine, but human like us, Prophet Muhammad showed us by his life and example that Islam is the perfect way of life and that it is possible to achieve happiness by following this way. If you find your life is taking you in another
direction, stop and think. Don’t make decisions in your youth that will take you on a different path that heads away from that of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In Islam there are no priests or popes. That, perhaps, is the secret of Islam. There is no special knowledge reserved for a professional religious class. There are no gobetweens between the Creator and the created. Islam is ours for the taking. How many of us reach out and take what Islam has to offer? How many of us are shining examples of mercy and justice that Islam can develop in us? Each of us can fall prostrate before our Maker and say what we need to say without the help of anyone else. Just you and your creator! We can see this clearly inside any mosque. Muslim men and women, each in their own place, gather in the mosque for the five daily prayers. They pray together as a community, in congregation, receiving blessings for doing so, yet it is obvious to
anyone who looks on that each Muslim is concerned with speaking to his or her Lord individually. It is perhaps this, more than anything else, which makes the place of Prophet Muhammad so strong in the heart of every Muslim. Muhammad was a man and he found it possible, with Allah’s help, to live out every requirement of Islam. So you and I, then, can try to do the same and, with Allah’s help, we can live out our faith like our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). About the writer: Idris Tawfiq has a degree in English language and Literature from the University of Manchester and a degree in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. 4 Types of Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Kids
parents struggle to limit junk food intake. They are even more likely to have dental cavities because permissive parents often don’t enforce good habits, like ensuring a child brushes his teeth.
Your parenting style can affect everything from how much your child weighs to how she/ he feels about him/herself. It’s important to ensure your parenting style is supporting healthy growth and development because the way you interact with your child and how you discipline her will influence her/him for the rest of her life. Researchers have identified four types of parenting styles:1
4. Uninvolved Parenting
Authoritarian Authoritative Permissive Uninvolved
Each style takes a different approach to raising children, and can be identified by a number of different characteristics.
1. Authoritarian Parenting
Do any of these statements sound like you?You believe kids should be seen and not heard. When it comes to rules, you believe it’s “my way or the highway.” You don’t take your child’s feelings into consideration. If any of those ring true, you might be an authoritarian parent. Authoritarian parents believe kids should follow the rules without exception. Authoritarian parents are famous for saying, “Because I said so,” when a child questions the reasons behind a rule. They are not interested in negotiating and their focus is on obedience. They also don’t allow kids to get involved in problem-solving challenges or obstacles. Instead, they make the rules and enforce the consequences with little regard for a child’s opinion. Authoritarian parents may use punishments instead of discipline. So rather than teach a child how to make better choices, they’re invested in making kids feel sorry for their mistakes. Children who grow up with strict authoritarian parents tend to follow rules much of the time. But, their obedience comes at a price.Children of authoritarian parents are at a higher risk of developing self-esteem problems because their opinions aren’t valued. They may also become hostile or aggressive. Rather than think about how to do things better in the future, they often focus on the anger they feel toward their parents. Since authori-

Hello winter
Winter has set with full force, We have forgotten how the summer was. The heat is on jackets, coats, socks and all winter clothes are out. Imagine we have some function in a hall where spring, summer season is created .Everything is sunshine, warm, flowers and all so nice Life after fifty - life in winter stage, it may not be as youthful as before but it is still wonderful. It is always the way you look at the things, whether the glass is half full or half empty, to be optimistic or pessimist. All things and happening and situations are in their own
place, the important thing is how we think about any situation, how we deal with it and how we accept it and take action about it. We just breathe and go on with life without giving serious thoughts unless we are forced to think the grass is always green on the other side, it seems like that. When we reach the age of 50 and plus we think, oh if only i was young i could have done these or those things differently. We always think about the physical and mental limitations, But we never concentrate on okay what is there it is but what next. If season is cold we wear warm clothes , we do not play summer supports like cricket or football but we can play ice hockey or ski or play with snow. Yes, we can play indoor games. Some way we can still work and make a career which fits in our mental and physical state. In fact we can do lots of things and activities which we could not do before due to our studies and
career and family responsibilities • We can do lots of volunteer work. • We can relax and line daily life the way we always wished. Get up little late if we feel like, finish the book we were reading. Do gardening as long as you want. • We can travel whichever place we always wanted to go and explore at our pace. • We can give full time and attention to our hobbies in fact we develop new hobbies. • We might be surprised to find out hidden or forgotten skills we have which we could not practice due to busy life. We never know we can do some great work • Friends and family- we can spend time with friends and family we can help them make their life more easy and comfortable. • Give-we can give back to family and society which we took till now, help favours which we might have taken favours which we might have taken granted think we always had help from our parents when we were young. Now we can look after our grand children and some of house works and shopping etc. So our children can concentrate more on their career .life and career are more stressful and competition in this modern age of technology • We can also learn to take help of all this advanced technology and do something i.e. if you are a good cook and love cooking, you can cook some dishes and post and share them. You can run online cook-
Do any of these statements sound familiar? You don’t ask your child about school or homework. You rarely know where your child is or who she is with. You don’t spend much time with your child. If those statements sound familiar, you might be an uninvolved parent. Uninvolved parents tend to have little knowledge of what their children are doing. There tend to be few rules. Children may not receive much guidance, nurturing, and parental attention. Uninvolved parents expect children to raise themselves. They don’t devote much time or energy into meeting children’s basic needs. Uninvolved parents may be neglectful but it’s not always intentional. A parent with mental health issues or substance abuse problems, for example, may not be able to care for a child’s physical or emotional needs on a consistent basis. At other times, uninvolved parents lack knowledge about child development. And sometimes, they’re simply overwhelmed with other problems, like work, paying bills, and managing a household.Children with uninvolved parents are likely to struggle with self-esteem issues. They tend to perform poorly in school. They also exhibit frequent behavior problems and rank low in happiness. The studies are clear, however, that authoritative parenting is the best parenting style. But even if you tend to identify with other parenting styles more, there are steps you can take to become a more authoritative parent. With dedication and commitment to being the best parent you can be, you can maintain a positive relationship with your child while still establishing your authority in a healthy manner. And over time, your child will reap the benefits of your authoritative style. Source: https://www.verywellfamily.com
ing classes . you may get Tiffin orders and earn at your own pace as well as enjoy your hobby • Talent –we can have enough time to explore our talents and help family member to have theirs. • We can meet people, we can work in nonprofit organisations, We can work hand in hand with youngsters. They can be helped with our experience and intelligence. • Its good time to make old meet new• Last but not least is we understand that whoever is born is going to die so death is final step to meet our creator we should be ready to welcome that . We also should accept that our body and mind which are tools are in effect of wear and tear so are going to give us trouble but we will work our life. God send us in this world non-polluted state, we must try to return his gift as much we can in pure, better and good state Just chill – when day start we need money when day starts getting over we need peace, do not have arrogance ever anything even the grave if Sikander is not found.

Culture and Brain
H
umans are biologically adapted to cultural environments they themselves create. Human brain and mind are therefore modified, shaped, and formed through one’s active engagement in a variety of sociocultural contexts. Understanding the interplay between culture and human brain function and between culture and human behaviour is a necessary step for uncovering both the mechanisms underlying cultural processes and behaviour and human brain responses to evolutionary/ societal demands. Studies of mutual interactions between culture and human brain/ mind require scientific research from multiple disciplines to bridge the gap between natural sciences and humanities. This opens an avenue to understand both generalities of human nature and particularities of human practices. ics such as how the mutual interaction between culture and brain/mind influences aims to provide a platform to publish em- human cognition, emotion, and behaviour, pirical and review articles that focus on what mechanisms underlie cultural experithe interrelationship between culture and ences, and how the cultural diversity of huhuman behaviour and between culture man collectives is created. Spaghetti-scented candle? Why “savory” candles mess with our minds
By: ASHLIE D. STEVENS Science explains why the spaghetti aroma, in candle form, just seems wrong yet still intriguing have been stalked for about a month by a spaghetti-scented votive candle. I mean this in the way that, in our peculiar age of digital advertising, an item available for purchase can follow you from platform to platform, popping up in sponsored ads and emerging from the e-shadows through targeted campaign emails. Sold by the MoMA Design Store, this candle is made by the designers behind “Toiletpaper” magazine — a biannual magazine co-created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari. Its fragrance is described as “eclectic… an aromatic blend of tomato leaf, sage, and other botanicals sprinkled with pink pepper.” I know the candle, with its porcelain holder designed to look like coils of sauce-covered noodles, is meant to make a statement; it’s sold as “comfort food meets Pop art,” after all. But every time it would appear in my social media feed, I felt a little sick. The thought of lighting a small, white candle that suddenly filled the room with the smell of pasta sauce was disconcerting. I wasn’t the only one who felt this way; in an informal survey of friends on social media, there were very few “savory-scented” candles that people would actually want to put out (bacon was, perhaps unsurprisingly, the most common exception). But why? At the end of a long day, if I walked into my kitchen or a restaurant and the scent of spaghetti with sauce filled the air, I would drool in anticipation and reach for the Parmesan. According to Dr. Thomas Cleland, an olfactory researcher at Cornell University, our sense of smell — and how our brains construct feelings about most odors— is a really personal thing. “The affect, or feelings, associated with a given odor can come from many sources including personal experience, associations with similar odors, or even some startlingly indirect routes,” Cleland said. He gave the example of how a spicy scent bouquet could evoke thoughts of drinking hot spiced wine under a blanket beside a
I
roaring fire while the snow swirls outside the window. “[It] doesn’t need to be an identical odor so long as enough important ‘notes’ are there,” he said. Cleland imagines this sensation would be strongest if someone actually had experience with hot spiced wine themselves, but doesn’t believe that’s actually necessary. “You can substitute any sort of spice that fits the narrative,” Cleland said. “I’m thinking Christmas spices here, and most of us have smelled cinnamon and know that it is a traditional part of such spice combinations. “In other words, the olfactory perception associated with an odor encounter is constructed from the full experience, real and ‘advertised,’ of that or similar odors in your experience, and one can attribute meaning to any sort of odors that you associate with particular situations or circumstances,” Cleleand said. This idea of “construction” is key to understanding why a spaghettiscented candle would be unsettling to some people. The way we comprehend the world around us is very much a collection of active processes and prior learning; our brain is constantly putting together puzzle pieces and making predictions. According to Cleland, as a culture, we have
a tendency to not focus on odor “as much as some other modalities, and hence it’s kind of prone to mystery.” In this case, it may help to think about it in terms of our other senses. Take listening to music, for example. As with everything, personal taste varies because of a collection of cultural and personal associations, but most people have a pretty solid grasp on what music is appropriate for certain occasions. You’re not going to blast Ginuwine’s “Pony” at a funeral, “Baby Shark” is not a song you want to get it on to. And while our brains are constantly learning and adapting, it can be tough to break prior associations. This is something I wrote about for NPR last year in terms of taste, memory and visual cues (using gummy bear flavors as an example). For that story, I spoke with Dr. Don Katz, a neuropsychologist at Brandeis University. He broke down a study done by the UKbased researcher Charles Spence, in which he took a group of college students and gave them bottles of clear-colored liquid enhanced with fruit flavorings — orange, grape, apple, and lemon. According to Katz, the college students did a great job of differentiating between the flavors of the clear liquid. “But then he added
food coloring,” Katz says. “The ‘wrong’ food coloring for the liquid.” So, the grape-flavored liquid was then colored orange, for example. “While I wouldn’t say they went to chance, their ability to tell which was which got really subpar all of the sudden,” Katz says. “The orange beverage tasted orange [to them]. The yellow beverage tasted like lemonade. There wasn’t a thing they could do about it.” “Spaghetti odor, I think, is associated with dinner time via our individual — and shared — experiences,” Cleland said. Removing it from that context, via candle, is a definite way to mess with one’s mind. And like other cultural touchstones that have been altered in bizarre ways — like this ska remix of the “Jurassic Park” theme — that disconnect is intriguing enough to inspire discussion (and potential purchases). It’s a business model that has worked well for shops other than the MoMA Design Store, too. Kentucky for Kentucky is a novelty store that sells state-based items. They garnered a lot of press in 2013 when they launched a fried chicken-scented candle. “Initially we only had 25 candles for sale and they sold out in under a minute,” said Kentucky for Kentucky partner Whit Hiler. “Based on the demand, we decided to relaunch the candles a few days later and just let the sales run and then make the candles based on that demand. After a few hours we had sold over 1,300 fried chicken candles and had to kill the sale.” Since then, the business has released other state-specific scents. According to Hiler, their candles with sweeter notes, like bourbon ball and mint julep, sell more consistently. But he said, thanks to a powerful combination of novelty and internet popularity, there’s a strong demand for their savoryscented candles, too — which are cornbread, beer cheese, and the classic Kentucky hot brown sandwich. So next time you walk into a restaurant and catch a whiff of your favorite savory entree — consider the market for candles that purposely challenge our sense of odor construction and perception. Prime Minister Khan launches the “largest ever needs-based” scholarship
Addressing the launching ceremony, the prime minister said that the programme will bring a big change in the society. He said that the best way to reduce poverty is provision of opportunities to students from poor families. He regretted that a colonial-era educational system was functioning in the country and criticised the multiple education systems which exist in Pakistan. “Three parallel systems — English medium, Urdu medium and religious seminaries — were being run in the society which was a big injustice and no one tried to [fix it] or talk about it,” he said. “According to the last update I received, some 800,000 students are studying under the English medium system, 30 million under Urdu medium and 2.5 million students
Steven Smith’s masterclass gives Australia series lead
It didn’t take long for Steven Smith to clamp down on any whispers he might be surplus to the The top order, once more, left Azam on his own to fend off the Australia attack. Fakhar Zaman’s tortured existence at the crease lasted seven balls before driving a catch straight to mid-off, while Mohammad Rizwan struggled with the exact problem his predecessor was criticised so heavily for. The dot balls mounted at his end, only increasing the pressure on Azam to keep the runs flowing. It wasn’t until Iftikhar Ahmed came in at No. 6 that Pakistan took Australia’s bowlers to task; until then, the run rate was barely over a run a ball.and poise in exactly the right doses steered Australia to what ended up being a stroll of a chase against Pakistan with victory by seven wickets. It needn’t have been as easy as that, though, and didn’t look nearly as comfortable when they lost David Warner and Aaron Finch inside the powerplay, more than a hundred runs still to get without the comfort blanket of an explosive Glenn Maxwell in the middle order. It was an innings every bit as modern as T20 cricket requires of its players, but the 51-ball 80 Smith struck contained shots that wouldn’t have been out of place at this year’s Ashes. Eleven fours and a six, exactly a half-century of them, came in boundaries, and by the final two overs, Smith was properly peaking. You almost wished Pakistan, who had done quite well at the end of the first innings to post 150, had put up something more challenging than that, if only to watch a little bit more of the game’s hottest player operating at his best. He was helped by the belligerence of Australia’s openers, making their intentions plain as early as the second over. Warner took apart Imad Wasim, normally so reliably economical in the powerplay, finding four fours in what seemed like all four corners of the ground to get Australia off to a flyer, before his run of unbeaten scores was ended by Mohammad Amir. Their dismissals within three overs of each other was, in truth, the only time in the whole contest where it felt Pakistan were within a punter’s chance of making a game of it in Canberra’s first T20I, but having added 48 in the powerplay, Smith knew he could take his time to settle in without the asking rate spiralling out of control.
are enrolled in madressahs,” he said. He said that under the programme 50,000 scholarships will be offered each year. Out of the total, two per cent quota will be allocated for physically challenged students, the premier announced, adding that 50pc of the scholarships will be provided to women. He also emphasised the importance of a high literacy rate among women. ‘Ehsaas for Students’ is another project of the government’s social welfare programme Ehsaas and aims to provide scholarships to about 200,000 students from lower income families over the next four years. The government will award 50,000 scholarships every year, half of which will be granted to women, the prime minister said in a tweet earlier today.
“I will launch the largest ever needs-based undergraduate scholarship programme in the history of Pakistan today. 200,000 scholarships will be awarded over the next 4 years, 50,000 every year, 50% of these for women to promote human capital development under my @Ehsaas_Pk umbrella,” the premier said. The project aims to “ensure that no student is deprived of education because of financial need”. Scholarships will be awarded to students admitted to any public sector university “on merit”, whose family income is “below poverty threshold”. The programme also encourages differently-abled students to apply and/or those who hail from rural or remote areas. The scholarship would cover the students’ tuition fee
and also provide them a stipend. The deadline to apply for scholarships is December 10. Ehsaas is an ambitious social safety and poverty alleviation programme launched by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government. Since the launch of the programme earlier this year, the prime minister has inaugurated multiple welfare projects under Ehsaas’ umbrella including Ehsaas-Saylani Langar Scheme and Panah-gah in order to provide food and shelter to the poor.
