he Imran Khan government’s move to set a potential ransom for Nawaz Sharif was politically brilliant. If Sharif had given an indemnity bond he would for posterity be labelled a thief. And now that the Lahore High Court has overturned the move, the judiciary might be perceived as having to shoulder part of the responsibility. A political analysis could easily interpret the court decision as either a humanitarian gesture or a decision legalising two Pakistans: one for the rich convicts whose treatment takes place abroad and one for the poor who die in prison. In both cases Khan shall appear uncompromising on his anticorruption agenda. It is a good lesson for his competing parties to look again at the edge that Khan’s diverse advisory base provides him. This time it enabled him to play a difficult situation well. Perhaps instead of sticking with continuity that has kept them on a downward slope, his competitors should also develop the capability to analyse results of the advice they receive.

continued questions remain. Overnight TV anchors who waxed eloquent on Sharif ’s corruption supported his leaving in the name of humanity or political stability. The same track resonated with the government’s allies leading to speculation whether Nawaz Sharif or actually Shahbaz Sharif had again made friends with the masters. Imran Khan may have had the optics win but the more serious challenges remain. Khan, much like Mr Bhutto, has come to power by polarising the country with his rhetoric. But very much like what happened to Mr Bhutto, whose polarisation was driven by economics including nationalisation and an attack on established elites, Khan is running the danger of powerful societal forces ganging up to eliminate him politically. Mr Bhutto realised the dangers of the polarisation he had created a couple of years into his term and tried to retreat. ‘Islam-Noah’s Ark re-landed’! By: Gulshan Alani
Today’s disastrous situation of Nature’s and man-made disasters takes us centuries back to analyze and ask why does it happen? For the answers we need to go to the Divine Scriptures that reveals the truth and gives genuine answers according to the ‘Divine Law’. The Divine Scriptures are blessings to mankind for the true ‘Guidance’ in all aspects of our lives, they are the Manuals to assemble our lives according to the Divine Law, like the Manuals to assemble the equipment, also the authentic Maps with the right direction to reach the right destination of ‘Milk & Honey’. With the right direction one gets on the right Caravan, like the ‘Noah’s Ark’. The Boat built by Prophet Noah (AS) to carry those who ac-
and the downtrodden to the extent where they would launch a struggle for him and despite his overtures to the established elites they would never trust him. In the end, when Zia moved he was a sitting duck. Perhaps Imran Khan’s realisation that he will be a sitting duck if he compromises on his anti-corruption agenda made him put up a last stand. His main problem is that, unlike Mr Bhutto, he does not have an economic vision to break the economic stranglehold maintained by purana Pakistan. The current structure of purana Pakistan has concentrated money in the hands of people whose skill lies not in innovation and business development but in buying cheap from government and selling at a margin to the people. If one goes through the business models of the top 30 businessmen that the chief of staff met to discuss the economy, one does not find a single business leader whose innovation is recognised internationally or whose R&D spend was a visible percentage of their business. Their skill sets lie primarily in negotiating an uncompetitive, highly regulated state economy and their interest lies in keeping it that way. The people of Pakistan at an
instinctive level grasp the business model of purana Pakistan and are not willing to be taxed for it. For them, each day remains a negotiation with a bloated state. Return ing home from work without being fleeced by the cop, getting water in a bucket from a tap nearby by appeasing the local bullies against which the state provides no security, trying to obtain healthcare, acquisition of slum housing and water for agriculture are just a few daily negotiations forced by the current economic stranglehold. Khan’s economic mantra should be generating growth, increasing participation in the economy and rolling back big government, but he is doing just the opposite. Instead of a visible programme to jump-start a growth economy by breaking the stranglehold of the established elites exercise, he is being led down the path of more taxes and more FBR to sustain or even further a big, unwieldy and incompetent public sector that uses its powers only to extort from the public and businesses on the pretext of regulation. This is an unsustainable economic situation and Imran Khan’s Achilles heel. By: Shakaib Qureshi

by Angel Gabriel, proven authentic Word of GOD, by its many Scientific details that not even known by Scientists of that time. The Divine Revelations are normally given to the true Prophets by the Creator-Lord GOD to rescue the mankind from the disastrous situation. The Prophets do not come just to say Hi, and bye to us, but to fulfill their rescue mission for mankind who are fallen under the evil influence and have become the victims of the Satan -Iblis-Lucifer who whispers in the ears of innocent mankind like he whispered in the ears of P. H. Adam (AS), influencing him and his wife H. Eve-Hawa (RA) against the Creator of the Universe, to disobey HIM. Similarly, influencing the mankind with his treacherous sweet talk, manipulates with lies, becomes dominant, and rides the innocent mankind, who merely becomes the
Donkey for the devil, or the obedient slaves. It is obvious that the Satan Iblis opposes to the Creator’s Guidance to enter the Kingdom of GOD, rejects HIS worship but promotes the human gods who are more famous with mounts of wealth collected by frauds in the name of GOD. The results of wrong worship are most devastating, increasing the suffering of people.

Nawaz Sharif arrives in London for treatment
Ex-Pakistan PM has secured an eight-week bail on medical grounds. London: Pakistan’s ailing former prime minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in London in an air ambulance for medical treatment on Tuesday evening. He will reportedly consult doctors in the city about his ill health, Geo News reported. Sharif arrived in London via Doha in the air ambulance equipped with an intensive care unit (ICU) and an operation theatre with a team of doctors and paramedics on board. He was later taken to Avenfield House in London’s Park Lane area. The ailing leader was accompanied by his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif and personal physician Dr
Adnan Khan. Close aides of the former Pakistan prime minister and party workers greeted him upon his arrival at his Avenfield House residence. The former prime minister’s departure to the UK was delayed by over a week after his ticket was cancelled as the authorities did not remove his name from the Exit Control List. Sources had earlier told ANI that Sharif will be admitted to London’s Charlestown Clinic. All the arrangements for his medical treatment at the clinic have been completed. Sharif has secured an eight-week bail on medical grounds from the Islamabad High Court in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case. He was serving seven years imprisonment in connection with the case. He also obtained bail from the Lahore High Court in the money laundering case. The former Pakistan premier was rushed to the hospital from Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore last month after his personal physician raised an alarm over his deteriorating health. Sharif, who has been diagnosed with an immune system disorder, was recommended by doctors to go abroad as his condition continued to deteriorate despite treatment. Doctors were struggling to bring his platelet count that had dropped to dangerous levels back to normal. Source: gulfnews.com/

Opposition’s Rehbar Committee decides UMER BUTT 604-505-5452 Residential. Commercial. Investment to end countrywide road blockades Email:umerbutt.realtor@gmail.com
The opposition’s Rehbar Committee on Tuesday called off the road blockades and anti-government sit-ins being held in various parts of the country in order to “not cause inconvenience to the public”. Addressing a press conference after an hours-long meeting of the committee, JUI-F leader Akram Khan Durrani directed workers to open all blocked roads starting tonight. Instead, he announced, the opposition will hold joint jalsas at the district level as part of its anti-government movement. He said since the Rehbar Committee’s decision was the “final word”, it was being conveyed to workers to end the road blockades. As part of the ‘Plan-B’ of the JUI-F-led Azadi March against the government, party workers have been blocking major highways and road links by staging sit-ins across the country since last week. The JUI-F’s sit-in in Islamabad — the first leg of the protest movement — was abruptly called off by party chief Maulana Fa-
zlur Rehman after 13 days last Wednesday. Both the PPP and PML-N had distanced themselves from the JUI-F sit-in as well as the party’s move to block the country’s main roads and highways. Durrani said the Rehbar Committee had today reviewed the political situation and expressed satisfaction at the process of “increasing pressure on the government”.“The opposition is united,” he declared, adding that their goal remains the achievement of their four demands. The president said he was happy with the performance of the Balochistan government.“There is no misunderstanding between the federation and the federating units in the country,” he said. “Allah will help us to get out of the Reko Diq case.” He said with the completion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, other countries of the world will be attracted to Pakistan, and “it will pave way for the development, especially in Balochistan”.

US has world’s highest rate of children in detention: UN study
The United States has the world’s highest rate of children in detention, including more than 100,000 in immigration-related custody that violates international law, the author of a United Nations study said on Monday. Worldwide more than seven million people under age 18 are held in jails and police custody, including 330,000 in immigration detention centres, independent expert Manfred Nowak said. Children should only be detained as a measure of last resort and for the shortest time possible, according to the United Nations Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. “The United States is one of the countries with the highest numbers - we still have more than 100,000 children in migrationrelated detention in the [US],” Nowak told a news briefing. “Of course, separating children, as was done by the Trump administration, from their parents and even small children at the Mexican-US border is absolutely prohibited by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. I would call it inhuman treatment for both the parents and the children,” he added. There was no immediate reaction from US authorities. Novak said US officials had not replied to his questionnaire sent to all countries. Novak said the US had ratified major international treaties such as those guaranteeing civil and political rights and banning torture, but was the only country not to have ratified the pact on the rights of children. “The way they were separating infants from families only in order to deter irregular migration from Central America to the United States to me constitutes inhuman treatment, and that is absolutely prohibited by the two treaties,” said Nowak, a professor of international law at the University of Vienna. The US detains an average of 60 out of every 100,000 children in its justice system or immigration-related custody, Nowak said, the world’s highest rate, followed by countries such as Bolivia, Botswana and Sri Lanka. Mexico, where many Central American migrants have been turned back at the US border, also has high numbers, with 18,000 children in immigration-related detention and 7,000 in prisons, he said. The US rate compared with an average of five per 100,000 in Western Europe and 14-15 per 100,000 in Canada, he said. At least 29,000 children, mainly linked to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) fighters, are held in northern Syria and in Iraq - with French citizens among the big-
gest group of foreigners, Nowak added. Even if some of these children had been child soldiers, he said, they should be mainly treated as victims, not perpetrators, so that they could be rehabilitated and reintegrated in society. Since coming to office, US President Donald Trump has made strict immigration policies a cornerstone of his presidency. Under his “zero-tolerance” policy at the border, his government implemented a practice of separating families. Following public outrage, Trump formally ended the practice in June 2018, but immigration advocates say family separation continues in other ways. Last week, an analysis of US government data by The Associated Press and PBS’s Frontline showed 69,550 migrant children were held in US government custody over the past year. AP and Frontline also found that children held in government custody spent more time in shelters and away from their families than in previous years. In September, a judge blocked new Trump administration rules that would have enabled the government to keep migrant children in detention facilities with their parents indefinitely. The judge said the rules conflict with a 1997 settlement agreement that requires the government to release immigrant children detained along the border as quickly as possible to relatives in the US and says they can only be held in facilities licensed by a state. The American Academy of Pediatrics has repeatedly said that detention is not suitable for children, who may suffer numerous negative physical and emotional symptoms. The Trump administration has faced harsh criticism of its temporary border patrol stations, where lawyers and internal government watch-dogs reported hundreds of children and families were held in squalid conditions. Indian police raid New Delhi call centre targeting Canadians, 32 arrested
New Dehli police say they have arrested 32 people and shut down a call centre which scammed Canadians out of their money via fraudulent phone calls involving their social insurance numbers. New Delhi deputy police commissioner Sameer Sharma said in a statement on Monday that the “swanky international cheating scam call centre” called CyberCell was targeting Canadian citizens and had come to the at-
tention of police on Friday. “It was learned that [the scammers] are cheating innocent peoples based [in Canada] on the false pretext of saving them from non-existing social insurance number (SIN) violations,” Sharma said. Police arrived at the call centre located in an industrial district in west Dehli to find several fraudulent calls in progress with computer screens showing Canadian phone numbers. Three supervisors were present and questioned about the activity, but they “could not give any satisfactory answer,” he said. Four men suspected of owning the call centre were not present during the raid and are being sought by police, Sharma said. The centre was believed to have operated at nighttime in New Delhi, which is morning and afternoon across most of Canada, the statement said. “On sustained questioning, they divulged that they were engaged in calling [Canadians] and impersonating [themselves] as genuine Canadian police and Service Canada officials.” ,...... China says its courts trump Hong Kong’s on face mask ruling
China’s top legislature insisted on Tuesday Hong Kong courts had no power to rule on the constitutionality of legislation under the city’s Basic Law, as it condemned a decision by the high court to overturn a ban on face masks worn by pro-democracy protesters. The statement came a day after the high court ruled that the face mask ban - introduced through colonial-era emergency laws - was unconstitutional. The statement could further fan the flames in Hong Kong after months of violent protests over concerns that Beijing is eating away at the city’s autonomy. “Whether the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region comply with the Basic Law of Hong Kong can only be judged and decided by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress,” Yan Tanwei, a spokesman for the Legislative Affairs Commission of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, said in a statement. “No other authority has the right to make judgments and decisions,” it added. Jian also indicated that the legislature might take some form of action. “We are considering the relevant opinions and suggestions put forward by some NPC deputies,” he said, without elaborating. Protests started in June with rallies that brought hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets in a largely peaceful call for the withdrawal of a now-shelved China extradition bill. They have since evolved into a series of demands for greater democracy and freedoms as well as an independent inquiry into alleged police brutality. Protesters worry China is encroaching on the freedoms given to Hong Kong when the United Kingdom returned the territory to China under what was known as “one country, two systems” in 1997. Speaking from Beijing, Al Jazeera’s Andrew Thomas said the statement from the legislature was rare and a further indication of how seriously China viewed the situation
in the city.“There is an irony here,” he said. “Beijing is saying only it has the power to interpret the constitution not the (Hong Kong) courts. They are proving what the protesters have been saying ever since they first came out onto the streets - that is that the whole idea of ‘one country, two systems” is essentially a sham and that the power rests solely with Beijing.” China has repeatedly warned that it would not allow the city to spiral into total chaos, heightening concerns that Beijing might deploy troops or other security forces to quell the unrest. “The Hong Kong government is trying very hard to put the situation under control,” China’s ambassador to Britain, Liu Xiaoming, said on Monday. “But if the situation becomes uncontrollable, the central government would certainly not sit on our hands and watch. We have enough resolution and power to end the unrest.” China has continued to back Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the city’s police force, which has faced off with protesters in increasingly violent clashes. This week police laid siege at a university campus where protesters, some armed with bows and homemade catapults to fire bricks, are holed up. Dozens escaped the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) late on Monday by abseiling from a bridge to waiting motorbikes. About 100 people remain inside, according to police....... Officials from South Korea and the United States broke off talks on Tuesday aimed at settling the cost of hosting the US military, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said, amid a public backlash over a US demand for a sharp increase in the bill. Officials had resumed a planned two-day negotiation on Monday, trying to narrow a $4 billion gap in what they believe South Korea should contribute for the cost of stationing US troops in the country for next year. “Our position is that it should be within the mutually acceptable Special Measures Agreement (SMA) framework that has been agreed upon by South Korea and the US for the past 28 years,” South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said, referring to the cost-sharing deal’s official name. “The US believes that the share of defense spending should be increased significantly by creating a new category,” the ministry said in a statement. Negotiators left the table after only about one hour of discussions while the talks were scheduled throughout the day, South Korean media reported, citing unnamed foreign ministry officials. South Korean lawmakers have said US officials had demanded up to $5 billion a year, more than five times the 1.04 trillion won ($896 million) Seoul agreed to pay this year for hosting the 28,500 troops. US officials have not publicly confirmed the number, but Trump has previously said the US military presence in and around South Korea was “$5 billion worth of protection”. The negotiations are taking place as US efforts
to reach an agreement with North Korea over its nuclear and missile programmes appear stalled, ahead of a year-end deadline from Pyongyang for the US to shift its approach. Lee Hye-hoon, head of South Korea’s parliamentary intelligence committee, said in a radio interview on Tuesday the US ambassador to South Korea talked to her at length earlier this month about how Seoul had been only paying one-fifth what it should have been paying for the cost of stationing the troops. Under South Korean law, the military costsharing deal must be approved by parliament. Ruling party lawmakers have said this week they will “refuse to ratify any excessive outcome of the current negotiations” that deviate from the established principle and structure of the agreements for about 30 years. Trump has railed against what he says are inadequate contributions from allies towards defense costs. The United States is due to begin separate negotiations for new defense cost-sharing deals with Japan, Germany and NATO next year. Source: Al-Jazeera

How Sura Ad-Duha Can Change Your Life!
any of us know surah ad-duha off by heart and have probably read its meaning many times as well, which seems quite straightforward. How many of us, though, have actually gone into the reason behind its revelation and derived the lessons and implications this surah has in our lives? This surah was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (saw) at a time when he had not received any revelation for six months, not even in the form of a dream! The Prophet (saw) was in a very disturbed state of mind, feeling negative and depressed and believing that Allah was displeased with him, had forgotten him, and did not want him as a Nabi anymore. Don’t we have similar feelings in our lives? Times when our level of imaan is low, our khushoo in salah wavers and we feel a drop in our connection with Allah? We feel like our duas are not being answered, our salah is not having a positive impact on our hearts, and worst of all the feeling that we’re horrible human beings, that Allah doesn’t love us or doesn’t care about us anymore. Surah Ad-Duha was revealed to the Prophet (saw) to relieve him of these negative feelings and to give him hope, positivity, and the assurance that Allah is with him no matter what. From it we too can find peace, hope, and a renewed faith in Allah when we go through similar states of depression, sadness, and hopelessness. So what does this surah say? Wad duhaa— By the morning brightness This is the first thing you need to hear when you’re depressed: Wake up, look at the sunshine! Everything in life is not doom and gloom– you just have to look up! Wal laili iza sajaa— And [by] the night when it covers with darkness, Why is this aayah immediately talking about darkness? As a reminder to us that the night is meant to cover and give us comfort and rest. Generally when we’re depressed, we tend to get into a very bad sleep pattern by staying up at night and sleeping all day, thereby worsening our state of mind. This aayah reminds us to use the night as a comfort to ease our distress. Ma wad da’aka rabbuka wa ma qalaa— Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muhammad], nor has He detested [you].
This is a very powerful verse from Allah telling us that He doesn’t hate us and hasn’t forgotten us– reminding the depressed person that He is always by his or her side! Walal-aakhiratu khairul laka minal-oola— And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life]. Many times when we’re depressed we think: Is this all my life is going to be? Is it never going to get better? This aayah serves as a perfect answer to those questions, reminding us that life in this world is temporary and that Aakhira is certainly a better, more permanent place for us than this world could ever be. This makes us look forward to attaining our place in Jannah and helps us look at any problems in our lives as temporary tests of our faith from Allah. Wa la sawfa y’uteeka rabbuka fatarda— And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied. A promise from Allah that very soon he will give us a massive reward (Jannah) and we will be happy! Subhanallah! Isn’t this the best thing to hear when you’re depressed and fed up with this worldly life and the problems you’re facing? Alam ya jidka yateeman fa aawaa – Did He not find you an orphan and give [you]refuge? From this verse onwards, Allah gives us reason to believe His declarations and promises
in the first half of the surah. Now many of us may think: how would this aayah about orphans relate to the majority of us? Think about it– weren’t there many times in your life when you were sick or lonely and felt like you had nobody who cared about you? Who was the only one by your side at that time? Allah! It was He who took care of you and guided you out of that stage in life. Wa wa jadaka daal lan fahada— And He found you lost and guided [you]. How many of us, despite being born Muslims, have found ourselves misguided and straying away from Islam in the past? It was Allah who gave us that hidaya and brought us back to the straight path and to Him and made us practicing Muslims. Alhamdulillah! Wa wa jadaka ‘aa-ilan fa aghnaa— And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient. Many of us have probably gone through many periods in our lives when we have been short of money and wealth. Now when we look back we realize that it was only Allah who gave us that rizq in some form and got us through those tough financial times. When a person is depressed, giving him or her examples of how Allah has helped them in the past will strengthen their conviction and belief in the promises Allah makes in this surah for their future. Fa am mal yateema fala taqhar — So as for
the orphan, do not oppress [him]. This aayah is the ultimate antidote to depression! Depressed people are mostly consumed with their situation and feel that nobody could possibly be in a worse situation. This aayah reminds us to look at people who are in far worse situations than ourselves when we’re feeling hopeless and depressed— Look at the orphans, who have no family or loved ones and nobody to care for them. We have families and parents who love us, a roof over our heads and food on the table and we still think we’re in a bad situation? Subhanallah! Wa am mas saa-ila fala tanhar— And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him]. Another example is of the beggar – to once again remind us of the many material blessings that Allah has given us that we take for granted – food, clothing and shelter. How many of us have ever gone to sleep hungry? How many of us don’t have clothes to wear? Or don’t have a home to go to? These examples of the orphan and the beggar are ones we should constantly remind ourselves of to be thankful for the numerous blessings Allah has given us, get over our depression and feel connected to Allah again, out of gratitude. Wa amma bi ne’mati rabbika fahad dith – But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it]. This final aayah is about maintaining that renewed faith and bond with Allah – by pondering, glorifying and talking about the blessings of Allah! Either in terms of halaqas, discussions with family and friends or even da’wah! Dhikr, reading quran and listening to lectures are also great ways to keep the remembrance of Allah close to your heart! So the next time you feel disconnected, disheartened or depressed with your level of Imaan and your connection with Allah – read Surah Ad Duha and ponder over its meanings – Inshallah it will restore your faith and increase your belief in the greatness and power of Allah. David Eby proposes law to ban government Trudeau expands cabinet, promotes seven rookies and shakes up existing ministers from taking ICBC profits
B.C.’s attorney general is readying legislation to ban governments from raiding the Insurance Corp. of B.C. for profits — assuming the cash-strapped Crown corporation becomes profitable again. David Eby said he hopes to pass a law in the spring legislative session, making it harder for government to raid ICBC’s one-time lucrative “excess optional capital” fund. “We can make it clear to British Columbia that not only is government not taking money out of ICBC, but governments shouldn’t take money out of ICBC. It should go back to drivers,” Eby told Postmedia News on Monday. “And a law seems like a good way to do that.” Any future surplus, said Eby, should go toward lowering insurance rates, not general provincial revenue. The previous Liberal government siphoned more than $1.2 billion in profits from ICBC between 2010 and 2016 to pay for other services in the provincial budget. During those years, ICBC had profits. But in 2017, it began hemorrhaging money due rising claims costs and legal fees. The NDP government has blamed the Liberals for using ICBC like a piggy bank and ignoring financial warnings that ultimately led to ICBC losing almost $2.5 billion in the past two years and nearing insolvency. A future government could repeal the law with a vote in the legislature. Opposition ICBC critic Jas Johal questioned whether the NDP will truly be able to forgo ICBC revenues when the government is struggling to hang on to a thin projected $179 million surplus. “Given the NDP’s precarious financial situation at the moment, I’m kind of wondering if the AG has actually spoken to the finance minister and premier before making such pronouncements,” said Johal. Eby has tried to stabilize ICBC’s finances by setting a $5,500 cap on pain and suffering for minor injury claims, limiting the number of expert reports in court cases (which was re-
cently ruled unconstitutional) and redesigning the risk rating system. Also Monday, Eby confirmed comments he made on the This is Vancolour podcast, that B.C. will allow online renewals for basic auto insurance instead of having to visit insurance brokers in person for basic transactions. “We are doing online renewals for British Columbians,” Eby said. “My goal is we will have it in place as quickly as possible and ideally before the next election.” ICBC pays private auto brokers an average eight per cent commission to help motorists sign up for or renew their vehicle insurance. The commissions amounted to $490 million last year, out of a total of $7.5 billion in claims, losses and expenses by ICBC. In the past, Eby has questioned whether the savings of online renewals would be worthwhile, given that ICBC will have to create a new online enrolment system and many customers will still want or need in-person insurance services. We “really need to be saving in the neighbourhood of $100 million plus given the amount of effort,” he said. “And the online renewal piece is a significant question mark in terms of the actual delivery of savings.” He said some other provinces and countries with public insurers offer a reduced commission to brokers for simple online renewals, reflecting that brokers would do less work. The Insurance Brokers Association of B.C., which represents 900 outlets, said it has supported modernization for years....... Source: Vancouver Sun
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has unveiled a reconfigured cabinet that has been expanded with the intent of addressing pressing issues raised during last month’s federal election. With additional emphasis on middle class and regional prosperity and a new approach to representation, a dozen current ministers are taking on new portfolios and seven rookies are now in cabinet, two of whom were elected for the first time in 2019. “I’m very excited today to be able to get down to work the way Canadians asked us to in this last election. To pull together the country, focus on issues of economic growth for the middle class, to fight climate change, and to keep Canadians and their communities safe. That is our focus, and this is the team to do that,” Trudeau said during a postceremony media availability. Trudeau has reshaped the lineup of ministries, with several new titles, and consolidations of some cabinet responsibilities. The majority of the 37-member cabinet are MPs from Ontario and Quebec, four from British Columbia, one from Manitoba, and one from each of the Atlantic provinces. Gender balance has been maintained, a standard Trudeau set when his first cabinet was sworn-in in 2015. On their way inside, several ministers expressed their optimism about the next chapter for the Liberal government and the new challenges their roles will bring. The full lineup of the 29th federal ministry was announced at a Rideau Hall swearing-in ceremony overseen by Gov.
thousands of deaths across North America in an ongoing overdose epidemic. It causes an absolute blackout that can be difficult to rouse people out of, Helten said. When frontline workers give victims the overdose-reversal drug naloxone and oxygen, they often remain in what appears to be a coma. In B.C. in 2018, 1,541 people died of illicit drug toxicity, according to the BC Coroners Service, a rate of 30.9 deaths per 100,000 people in the province. As of the end of August, there had been 690 such deaths in 2019, a rate of 20.5 per 100,000. The solution, Helten said, is a safe supply of clean drugs available for people who have been unable to stop using illicit drugs. Several clean supply programs now operate in the Downtown Eastside, including a program operated by Portland Hotel Society and one operated by Vancouver Coastal Health at the Downtown Eastside Connections Clinic. While the idea of giving out drugs to people who are addicted to illicit drugs is controversial, Helten said it provides people space to work on other aspects of their lives without the constant need to procure street drugs, and risk dying every time they take them. “Once people get stabilized on (clean drugs), they don’t have to use fentanyl, and then we can work on the next steps,” he said. “Do you need housing, do you need treatment, do you need a counsellor, what do you want to do next?”
Last month’s election shows that climate change is at forefront Canadians’ minds and political discourse. Toronto, Canada - If Canada’s election last month sent any message to the rest of the world, it was that climate change is now a major component of political discourse, especially in the North American country. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won a second term, albeit with a minority government, running on the message of balancing climate and the economy. In his first term, Trudeau implemented a federal carbon pollution price, starting at about $15 ($20 Canadian) per tonne and rising to about $37 ($50 Canadian) per tonne in 2022, with a rebate for individuals. After the election, Trudeau recommitted to working on climate change, but said he still plans to expand a controversial oil pipeline opposed by environmentalists. Trudeau is set to unveil his new cabinet on Wednesday, with Parliament opening its next session December 5. Environmentalists will be looking to Trudeau’s throne speech next month for signs about how he will approach climate change in the coming year. Canada’s October election was the closest the country has ever come to a referendum on climate change. For the first time, all major parties put forward climate plans for the world’s 10th-largest emitter. Canada also sits on the world’s third-largest oil reserves. Polls show Canadians have become increas-
Gen. Julie Payette. The group will hold their first cabinet meeting in Ottawa on Thursday afternoon. Notably, Trudeau has named Chrystia Freeland to be his deputy prime minister, the first time someone has held that role in cabinet since 2006. “I see it very much being a Freeland-ish role,” Trudeau said when asked about the expectations of the title. “Chrystia and I have worked very closely on some of the biggest files facing Canada… And our ability to work together on these issues that, quite frankly, touch on national unity, touch on energy and the environment, touch relations with all provinces in all regions of this country, is going to be an extremely important thing at a time where we see some very different perspectives across the country that need to be brought together,” Trudeau said. Born in Alberta, Freeland is also taking on the intergovernmental affairs role, putting her at the helm of tackling the regional divide that the fall federal election exposed, with the Liberals being shut out of Saskatchewan and Alberta, where alienation sentiment is on the rise. She’s now the point person on addressing the tensions between the provinces and the federal government, that some say were aggravated during the election campaign when Trudeau framed his party as the antidote to leaders like Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford. ‘Like a war zone’: 16 overdoses before noon What’s next in Canada’s fight against at Vancouver overdose prevention site climate change?
VANCOUVER - Frontline workers at Vancouver’s Overdose Prevention Society are warning that a dangerous drug combination is causing a spike in overdoses and leaving people in a coma-like state before they can be revived. Trey Helten, a manager at the OPS on East Hastings Street in the Downtown Eastside, said Friday started with two overdoses around 8 a.m. – and by noon, there had been 16 more. Four of those overdose victims ended up going to hospital for further treatment, Helten said. “That’s how our day started – it was like a warzone – and it didn’t let up until three o’clock in the afternoon,” Helten said. While Friday was a particularly bad day for the sheer number of overdoses, Helten said one particular strain of “bad dope” has been causing problems for around six months. Helten said it’s a low-grade Benzodiazepine, a type of drug that slows down the body’s central nervous system, mixed with fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that has caused
ingly concerned about climate change. A government report published in April found that Canada is warming at double the global rate, with northern Canada experiencing the brunt of that heat. Around the world, increasingly dire reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and more frequent and intense natural disasters have prompted weekly school strikes by children and teenagers, including in Canada. During the election, Trudeau marched at the Montreal climate strike, drawing sideeye from activists who believed he was not aggressive enough on climate, highlighting the government’s purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline in an effort to guarantee its expansion. But ultimately voters saw him as the better alternative to Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, who promised to repeal the carbon price and ran on a climate plan that maintained the status quo. ife is never a bed of roses. We suffer from heartbreak, pain, and calamity, any of which might drive us to depression. However, at times depression can just be there for no specific reason at all, and when this happens it is imperative that we seek help for it. Allah subhana wa ta’ala has revealed the Quran as a guide for mankind till the end of time, giving us a guide to help us through depression. Some surahs of the Quran are valuable reading during depression and anxiety, as their meanings and messages can help alleviate depression, inshaa Allah.
Surah Duha
Surah Inshirah, Surah 94, in the Quran. Allah tells the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam about how Allah had eased the pain that the prophet felt internally by revealing to him the Quran. Allah mentions how He will raise the mention of His prophet around the world, and today every second somewhere on earth the adhaan is going on and someone somewhere is saying Ashadu anna Muhammadar Rasulullah. Allah also mentions that both before hardship and after hardship is ease. Then He instructs the prophet to pray to His Lord after he is done with his duties to the people.
Surah Yusuf
Among the early surahs revealed to the prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was Surah Yusuf. This is a unique surah in the Quran in that most of it relates just the story of one prophet of Allah, Yusuf. Countless lessons can be derived from this surah and a lot of it has to do with dealing with hardship— how Yaqub alayhi salam and Yusuf alayhi salam dealt with pain and suffering in this world and how Allah elevated both of them due to their patience. This was also a surah revealed to the prophet to console him, and this should work brilliantly for us too! Surah Inshirah Along with Surah Duha, Allah also revealed Surah Isra, Kahf, Maryam, Taha, Anbiya There have been multiple articles on UnderstandQuran.com about Surah Duha, Surah 93, ma sha Allah. Allah subhana wa ta’ala revealed it at a time when our Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was depressed, to soothe him. For the man who suffered the most in this world, it was something very soothing. The Surah reminds the prophet of the blessings that Allah has opened for him and asks him to help the poor and the needy and to make mention of the blessings of Allah upon him.
The eminent companion of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, Abdullah ibn Mas’ood radi Allahu anhu said concerning these surahs (Surahs 17, 18, 19, 20, 21), “They were among the first chapters to be revealed and they are my treasures.” [1] Imam al-Bayhaqi mentions about this narration, “He was referring to the superiority of these surahs because of what they contain of stories of the Prophets alayhimussalam and the nations. And they were among the first surahs to be revealed at the beginning of Islam, because they are Makkan surahs, and they were among the first parts of the Quran to be recited and memorized.” All of these Surahs contain lots of stories of the prophets, of the nations of old, and of Bani Israeel in particular. All of these stories help with depression and anxiety and help us feel the power and majesty of Allah.
Surah Rahman
Surah Rahman probably has the most vivid imagery of both Paradise and Hellfire. It also tells us of so many blessings of Allah that are mentioned within it. It is a surah that is soothing to the ears, calming on the heart, and food for the soul. With its beautiful imagery, description of Paradise, and a mention of the blessings of our Lord, it can take us out of depression.
Surah Nas
low self-esteem and self-doubt. A lot of it is exaggerated by the whisperings of Shaytan who has sworn to deviate every last human being he can on planet Earth. However, Allah is The Most Merciful and among the surahs he has revealed to combat the whispers of Shaytan is Surah Nas. Reciting it often can help in removing doubts and whisperings and is a surah which brings protection from Allah. Disturbing video shows mob attacking man, vandalizing cars in Surrey
ing golf clubs and other makeshift weapons to damage several cars and attack at least one person in Surrey. The cellphone video begins with a mob of people running toward the parking lot of the Kwantlen Plaza strip mall, located on 128 Street in the city’s Newton neighbourhood. The men can then be seen wailing on a number of fleeing cars, and swarming a driver who steps out of his vehicle. The video, which has been circulating on the WhatsApp messaging platform, was disturbing enough to prompt a response Friday from Mayor Doug McCallum, who suggested VANCOUVER – Troubling video has mob violence is happening with “alarming emerged showing a mob of young men us- frequency” in his city. “In August, another large brawl in the Straw-
berry Hill area was caught on video. This behaviour is repugnant and puts the public at risk,” McCallum said in a statement. “It is imperative that the RCMP take immediate and strong action to get a handle on this kind of mob violence that is occurring far too frequently in Surrey.” Surrey RCMP said the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. Authorities received two calls about the attack, one from a victim and one from a witness. Investigators have yet to identify any of the suspects, but only recently became aware of the recording. Cpl. Elenore Sturko urged anyone who recognizes the men in the video to reach out to police. “While this incident and video is disturbing,
having such a wide distribution could potentially help further our investigation and identify those involved,” Sturko said in a news release. “We share the community’s concerns about this act of public violence and urge anyone with information to come forward.” In response to the incident, the citizens’ group Wake Up Surrey called on elected officials at the provincial and federal levels to address “this increasing type of crime occurring on our streets.” “There should be zero tolerance towards such despicable behaviour and the swiftest legal means to control this violence,” the group said in a statement.

Statement From Mayor Doug McCallum There is a video circulating online that shows a group of young men fighting, many of whom are wielding metal or wooden rods and sticks as weapons, and vandalizing cars in a parking lot in the 7000 block of 128 St. area of Surrey. I am deeply concerned that this kind of mob violence is happening with alarming frequency. In August, another large brawl in the Strawberry Hill area was caught on video. This behavior is repugnant and puts the public at risk. It is imperative that RCMP take immediate and strong action to get a handle on this kind of mob violence that is occurring far too frequently in Surrey. Doug McCallum Mayor City of Surrey
2 men arrested in connection to separate Surrey bank robberies VANCOUVER – Two men have been arrested by Surrey RCMP in connection to two separate bank robberies in the city. In the afternoon of Nov. 7, Mounties received a report of a robbery at bank near King George Boulevard and 102 Avenue. Police say the man allegedly entered the bank, demanded money, then fled. Not long after, 42-year-old Alan Granger was arrested in Whalley in connection to the incident. He has since been charged with a count of robbery. More than a month prior, on Oct. 1, police were called to a bank on Fraser Highway near 68 Avenue. That time, a man allegedly threatened a bank employee with a weapon when he demanded money.
Police arrested 40-year-old Ryan Wilband shortly after and he was charged with a count of robbery and two counts of breaching a probation order. Mounties say CCTV footage helped them arrest the suspects in each incident. “In both of these incidents, our investigators and frontline members secured valuable video evidence that assisted them to locate and arrest suspects,” said Sgt. Ryan Forbes with the Surrey RCMP robbery unit in a news release. “We encourage all businesses and home owners, if it is within their means, to consider installing their own CCTV systems.” Source: bc.ctvnews.ca/
4 in hospital, 3 with serious injuries after Burnaby crash VANCOUVER - A serious crash in Burnaby sent four people to hospital Sunday afternoon. The incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. on the overpass that takes Kensington Avenue over Lougheed Highway. Burnaby RCMP told CTV News Vancouver two vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened after one of them apparently crossed the road’s centre
line, hitting the other one head-on. Both vehicles suffered severe damage, requiring firefighters to use Jaws of Life to extricate the occupants, police said. Four people were transported to hospital, three of them having suffered serious injuries, according to RCMP. The overpass was closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation into the crash.
MLA wants seat belts to be mandatory on B.C. school buses
VICTORIA - A BC Liberal MLA is pushing the provincial government to make seatbelts mandatory on all new school buses. On Monday, Laurie Throness, MLA for Chilliwack-Kent, introduced an amendment that would require seatbelts on all new school buses in B.C. after September 2021. “The compartmentalization that is now in use by school buses do not protect children from rollovers or from side crashes” explained Throness. Compartmentalization is a type of design that includes high-back seating, seats that are close together, energy absorbing material in the seats, and strong anchorages for
the seats. Minister of Transportation Claire Trevena said she would look at the private member’s bill but preferred to wait for the results of a federal task force, which is consulting with provinces over school bus safety. “We’ll wait for the task force to come out with its recommendations in January, six weeks away, and make a decision then,” she added. A preliminary report from the task force compiled data from the National Collision Database, which shows during school commute hours from 1998 to 2017, five school-aged children died while on a school bus; 158 died while walking to school; and 395 died in a passenger vehicle. Gary Lillico, a bus driver from Agassiz, was at the legislature on Monday with Throness when the private member’s bill was put
forward. Lillico decided to petition Ottawa about a year ago to make three point seatbelts mandatory on all Canadian school buses after watching an exposé on school bus safety. “I looked at my wife and said, you know what, I gotta do something,” he explained. Lillico believes seatbelts would help reduce injuries and save lives, and his petition now has more than 120,000 signatures. “The one that really hit home for me was the death in 2008 of a school child, Jennifer Noble. Her mother was a first responder, she had to actually attend her daughter’s death scene while on duty,” added Lillico. But there is also debate around whether seat belts would actually reduce injuries. “Safety experts, including the Canada Safety Council, do not believe seat belts on school buses would improve safety,” said the Canada Safety Council in a statement on its website. The Association of School Transportation Services of B.C. said it was too early to comment on the bill. A page on its website dealing with seatbelts states: “There is a good probability we would save more lives if we invest in more training for our drivers, bus safety education
for students, reduced walk limits, public education campaign – to stop for school buses with red lights flashing, increased fines and enforcement for red light runners, electronic stability control and collision mitigation technology on school buses, 360 degree outside camera views for drivers and more buses transporting more children in the safest mode of transportation to get to school, The Black and Yellow School Bus.” Critics argue that better technology and training for drivers might be a better way to prevent crashes. They also point out the challenge around getting kids to comply with the rules and figuring out who would be liable if they didn’t. The bill wouldn’t require buses already in use to be retrofitted. Lillico doesn’t think Ottawa is interested in making that change either. Doing so would add thousands of dollars to the cost of each bus, which school districts would be left to deal with. Still, Lillico believes if a seatbelt saves even one life, the change will be worth it. “We’re just trying to get enough attention because it’s long overdue,” he said. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca/

12 Politics A closer look at the new faces in Trudeau’s cabinet — and what they bring to the table Rabi ul Awwal 24, 1441H Nov 22, 2019
After an election that reduced the governing Liberals to a minority, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is making a number of changes to his cabinet to adjust to new political realities. Trudeau is swapping out some cabinet stalwarts for new faces to grapple with the challenges ahead for his government — primarily restless western provinces beset by pipeline constraints and disruptions in the energy economy. Trudeau has tapped Peace River, Alta.-born Chrystia Freeland to serve as deputy prime minister and minister of intergovernmental affairs, the cabinet portfolio that will deal di-
rectly with the country’s premiers. The new Trudeau cabinet is decidedly Toronto- and Montreal-centric. Of the 36 cabinet ministers Trudeau appointed, seven are from Montreal and 11 are from the Greater Toronto Area. Five of the seven additions to cabinet come from those urban areas. Asked today about the the lopsided nature of the new cabinet, Trudeau said, “We are responding to the caucus we were given.” Here is a closer look at the new faces around the cabinet table: Source: ctvnews.ca
Scheer criticizes Liberal cabinet lineup while Kenney, Ford congratulate the new team Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer scoffed at the composition of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new federal cabinet Wednesday, saying the presence of many of the same faces will lead the government to repeat the errors of its first term. “The cabinet he unveiled today is a bigger and more bloated version of the same one that helped create an affordability crisis for Canadian families, attacked our energy sector and put thousands of Canadians out of work, and set the stage for a national unity crisis,” Scheer said in a statement. The Conservative leader said Trudeau had learned nothing from the election that saw his majority government reduced to a minority. The evidence for that, Scheer said, was Trudeau’s decision to elevate “a known antipipeline activist” to cabinet. Scheer did not name the “activist” but it appears he was referring to Steven Guilbeault, one of seven new appointments to cabinet. Guilbeault was director of the Quebec arm of Greenpeace for ten years and is a founding member of Équiterre, a Quebec environmental group. Trudeau’s cabinet stood at 35 members, including himself, when Parliament was dissolved. That number now sits at 37, including the prime minister. Two former ministers lost
their seats — Ralph Goodale of Saskatchewan and Amarjeet Sohi of Alberta — and Jim Carr of Manitoba is remaining out of cabinet so he can focus in on his battle with cancer. Former science minister Kirsty Duncan, from Ontario, was shuffled out of cabinet and becomes deputy House leader, while Ginette Petitpas Taylor, from New Brunswick, is being moved from the health ministry to serve as the new deputy whip. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet said Trudeau “lacked the necessary courage” to give Guilbeault a strategic role in environmental policy, opting instead to appoint him minister of heritage. “I believe that Mr. Guilbeault was not offered the minister of the environment because Mr. Trudeau dare not face Alberta and did not want to raise any more animosity between Alberta and his government,” said Blanchet. Appointments like Guilbeault’s, Scheer said, will “further stoke” regional divisions following an election campaign that saw the Liberals shut out of Alberta and Saskatchewan.“Today, Trudeau wasted an opportunity to begin a new approach. Instead, he’s doubling down on the same failures of the last four years,” he said. Welcoming the new cabinet Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s reaction to the new cabinet lineup was far more posi-
tive. He congratulated the new cabinet ministers on Twitter and said he hopes to work with them to create jobs and spur economic growth. “In particular, I look forward to working with [Jim Carr] in his new role as Special Representative for the Prairies, [Chrystia Freeland] as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs [and Seamus O’Regan] as the Minister of Natural Resources,” Kenney wrote. Conservative Ontario Premier Doug Ford also congratulated those appointed to the new cabinet, saying that his team is looking forward to working with Ottawa to “build a stronger, more prosperous Ontario and Canada.” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said that while Trudeau made some changes, the presence of
new faces around the cabinet table does not give him confidence in his government. “What would give me confidence is a clear indication of the policies that this government will enact that are going to benefit people,” he said. Blanchet said that Freeland, now deputy prime minister and minister of intergovernmental affairs, is capable but unlikely to soothe regional divisions because “no one could make a coherent or relevant country of this Canada.”“I think Ms. Freeland has shown in the past that she is, how shall I put it, very talented, she has experience now,” he said. “However ... the apparent division in Canada is a natural state for an artificial country [like] Canada.”Source: ctvnews.ca
need to do better,” Singh said. “They need to be an economy that’s not subject to the whims of one commodity that might go up and down in price and that could completely upturn their economy,” Singh said. “What they need to do is this: They need to be committed to job creation, they need to be committed to making sure they have a diverse economy that creates real opportunities that aren’t subject to the global whims of a market that can go volatile up and down.” Singh said he is open to looking at the equalization formula to make sure that it’s still working and fair. “The future we know is a future where we’re fighting the climate crisis while creating jobs. There has to be a path that’s laid out where we show workers that there is a path to create jobs… that’s what people need to see and to hear and to feel, so that they’re not worried about their future,” Singh said. SINGH WANTS ‘CONCRETE’ LANGUAGE IN THRONE SPEECH In addition to action on climate change and job creation, Singh said that he wants to see “timelines” and “some real concrete commitments” for pharmacare and dental care in next month’s Liberal throne speech, otherwise he is prepared to vote against it. “I want something concrete,” Singh said, downplaying questions of whether he is over exaggerating the bargaining position he will have in forth-party status, given the Bloc Quebecois’ indicated intention to work collaboratively with the Liberals so long as they stay out of provincial secularism matters. Singh said it’s different to have the support of an NDP caucus that he says will be “fighting actively” for improvements to Liberal initia-
tives than the backing of a party that would just “not get in the way.” “The Liberals can work with other people, there’s no question about it. The difference is that we’re actually fighting for things that Canadians want,” Singh said. SAYS PERSONAL, SPIRITUAL BELIEFS ALIGNED In light of Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer being asked about his personal and religious views on social issues like same-sex marriage, Singh was asked whether as a Sikh he believes that being gay is a sin. “No.” He was asked whether he supported same-sex marriage. “Yes.. I support it all the way.” And does he support the right of women to access abortion? Yes, absolutely, without any question.” Singh said that his personal and religious beliefs are “completely aligned.” “My beliefs spiritually are fully in line with supporting same-sex marriage, supporting a woman’s right to choose. I have no, any sort of ambiguity with my personal, spiritual beliefs,” Singh said. Asked whether it was appropriate for these kinds of questions to be asked of federal leaders, Singh said that he thinks it gives people confidence in his stance. “In my case, people can be very confident that both my spiritual, my personal, my beliefs as a leader are all in line with my values, which are to support a woman’s right to choose, which is to support same-sex marriage, which is to fight for equality and fairness for Canadians, so people can have that confidence with me.” Source: ctvnews.ca
Singh says Prairie premiers ‘distracting’ from real issues, need to ‘do better’
OTTAWA – NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says that clearly “people are feeling neglected” by Ottawa, but that the way the premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan are going about raising those concerns are “distracting” from the “real” problems. In an interview with Evan Solomon, host of CTV’s Question Period, Singh said that the issues and pressures Albertans and Saskatchewanians are facing are real, but are being felt in “many provinces.” While discussing what his priorities will be for the new Parliament, including more action on climate change, Singh was asked about the ongoing conversation around western alienation and the requests being made by Premiers Jason Kenney and Scott Moe and what the NDP caucus’ response would be to the Liberals moving ahead with targeted measures for that region of the country. “I want to see commitments at the federal level to help out those folks,” Singh said during a wide-ranging interview in which the NDP Leader also spoke about the intersection of his personal and spiritual beliefs, and why propping up the Liberal minority may be dependent on the promises in the throne speech. “People are feeling neglected and ignored by
Ottawa,” Singh said. “What Conservative premiers are doing is distracting from the real problem.”He cited the health care and education systems, and the challenge in finding jobs as examples of the “real” issues. Singh—who has just one elected MP in Alberta and none in Saskatchewan— opposes the Trans Mountain pipeline project that many in Alberta view as integral to their economic stability, and supports tougher environmental regulations. As CTV Edmonton reported last week, Kenney announced that he would be creating a “Fair Deal Panel” to look into ending several arrangements with the federal government, including opting out of federal cost-share programs like a proposed pharmacare plan that Singh is a vocal proponent of; and enacting a system in which schools need provincial signoff before entering into federal government agreements. In the interview Singh suggested that Alberta has to diversify its economy instead of doubling down on oil and gas. The Kenney government has previously said that becoming less dependent on oil and gas is a long-term initiative, though there have been steps taken. “They

Documents stolen from Quebec Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette’s government car MONTREAL - Embattled Quebec Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette’s bad month just got worse: documents were stolen from the minister’s government vehicle Wednesday night. Jolin-Barrette’s car had been parked in a lot at an office tower in Quebec City where Jolin-Barrette’s office is located. He was reportedly working late Wednesday night. A suspect who Quebec provincial police say has no ties to Jolin-Barrette was arrested and is to appear in court at a later date. He is alleged to have had the stolen documents in his possession at the time he was arrested. Jolin-Barrette told reporters in Quebec City Thursday that the stolen documents were not important, calling them mainly “handwritten notes” and “daily working documents.”
He said his iPad was also stolen, and has been recovered, and that he has changed all his access codes. “When you’re the victim of a theft, it’s not pleasant and I think any Quebecers who have experienced that know it’s frustrating and worrisome - and that’s how I feel today,” Jolin-Barrette said. Asked about the theft, Quebec Premier Francois Legault said Thursday he did not believe his minister acted irresponsibly in leaving documents in his work car, noting that he himself has done so. Legault said he was not aware if there are rules against doing that. Opposition parties took the opportunity to pile up on him again this week, with Liberal member Marwah Rizqy saying “the errors keep accumulating” for Jolin-Barrette.“My mother taught
me never to leave my purse in the car and I think we shouldn’t leave working documents in the car,” said Rizqy. “The minister, who is a trained lawyer, knows full well any document could be important.” Jolin-Barrette hasn’t had the easiest time in the legislature since last week, when he announced reforms to a popular immigration program for foreign students and workers. Hundreds of foreign students already in the province were shocked to learn they no longer qualified for a fast-track residency program. He and the rest of the Coalition Avenir Quebec government were hit with such criticism and disapproval that they suspended the reforms entirely last Friday. Jolin-Barrette on Tuesday was forced to publicly apologize for the proposal and

two of five people applying to study in Canada, with Africans suffering by far the highest rate of rejection. With Canada now the world’s fastest-growing destination for international students, the Immigration Department has this year been rejecting 39 per cent of study-visa applications, up from a 28 per cent refusal rate in 2014. Immigration officials say one in 10 applicants are rebuffed for apparent fraud. Others don’t make the cut because they’re unable to prove they have enough money to pay high tuition fees and rents in Canada. Others present study plans that don’t appear to make
more than 100,000 study-visa applicants a year. Even though most young people hire agents to make their case for a student visa to Canada, immigration lawyers in Canada confirm some applications are fraudulent and many are poorly put together, causing confusion and wariness among border agents. The rejections are hitting hopefuls from India especially hard, since they have grown into the largest group of foreign students in Canada. Many of India’s 173,000 study-permit holders here hope to eventually obtain permanent resident status so they can get full-time jobs and obtain Canadian citizenship for themselves and family members.

Indian nationals make up 30 per cent of foreign students in Canada, followed by China at 24 per cent, and South Korea, France and Vietnam at four per cent each. Source:vancouversun.com

Palestinians, rights groups, politicians and others on Monday slammed the Trump administration after it announced the United States was no longer considered Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank “inconsistent” with international law. “After carefully studying all sides of the legal debate, this administration agrees ... (the) establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per se, inconsistent with international law,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday when making the announcement.
tion of US President Donald Trump would no longer abide by a 1978 State Department legal opinion that said the settlements were “inconsistent with international law”. According to several United Nations Security Council resolutions, the most recent in 2016, Israeli settlements are illegal under international law as they violate the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits an occupying power from transferring its population to the area it occupies. The US announcement, the latest in a series of moves by the Trump administration favouring Israel, drew immediate criticism from Palestinians, rights groups and politicians worldwide. A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the US decision “contradicts totally with international law”.
to cancel the resolutions of international law, and has no right to grant legality to any Israeli settlement,” Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeinah said in a statement. Hanan Ashrawi, a veteran Palestinian negotiator and member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, said on Twitter before Pompeo’s statement, that the move represented another blow to “international law, justice & peace”. Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, warned that the US change of position would have “dangerous consequences” on the prospects of reviving the Middle East peace process. Safadi said in a tweet that Israeli settlements in the territory were illegal and killed prospects of a two-state solution in which a Palestinian state would exist sideby-side with Israel, which Arab countries say is the only way to resolve the decadesold Arab-Israeli conflict. Noura Erakat, a Palestinian human rights lawyer, tweeted: “Pompeo’s settlement an-
Mideast Police. Making it about Trump is self-exculpatory and a continuation of violence. Trump is not the rupture, he’s the culmination of US policy.” Huwaida Arraf, a Palestinian American lawyer and rights activist, said the announcement was “not surprising”. “Trump administration once again shows its complete disdain for the law,” she tweeted. “Sec. Pompeo, what has ‘not advanced the cause of peace’ is Israel’s building of illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian land, NOT calling out the settlements for what they are. #Justice101,” she added. Meanwhile, the European Union said that it continued to believe that Israeli settlement activity in occupied Palestinian territory was illegal under international law and eroded prospects for lasting peace. “The EU calls on Israel to end all settlement activity, in line with its obligations as an occupying power,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement following the US move. Rights group calls for end to ‘brutal crackdown’ of anti-government demonstrations, reporting 106 deaths in 21 cities. Days of protests in Iran over rising fuel prices and a subsequent government crackdown have killed more than 100 people across the country, according to rights group Amnesty International. In a statement on Tuesday, the UK-based organisation accused Iranian security forces of using “excessive and lethal force” to crush the demonstrations since they started on Friday. “At least 106 protesters in 21 cities have been killed, according to credible reports,” Amnesty said. “The real death toll may be much higher with some reports sug-
gesting as many as 200 have been killed.” No immediate reaction was available from Iran’s government to the estimated death toll. According to figures collated by Al Jazeera, at least 11 people - five security forces and six civilians - have been killed in the unrest. Iranian authorities have not offered a definitive account of how many people have been injured or killed in the protests. But the semi-official ISNA news agency reported late on Monday that three members of Iran’s security forces were killed by “rioters” near the capital, Tehran. Raha Bahreini, Amnesty’s researcher on Iran and Human Rights, said their death toll was based on information received from
witness accounts on the ground, human rights activists inside the country, as well as journalists and reliable sources outside the country. “The information that we have obtained reveals a horrific pattern of unlawful killings across the country,” she told Al Jazeera from London. “The information that we’ve received so far suggests that in a pattern consistent with past practices, security forces are even refusing to return the bodies of many of those killed to their families, or are forcing families to bury
their loved ones under rushed circumstances and without an independent autopsy, which is of course against international law and standards.” Source: aljazeera.com
On Monday, the Trump Administration broke with decades of U.S. precedent to redefine America’s policy on Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Since President Trump took office in 2016, he has overturned long-held U.S. positions on several of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict’s most contentious issues, to the dismay of the Pales-
tinian leadership. The White House’s latest announcement—that the U.S. will no longer consider Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be illegal under international law— is likely to further inflame those tensions. Here’s what to know. What is Washington’s new policy on Israeli settlements in the West Bank? “After carefully studying all sides of the legal debate,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters on Monday, “the United States has concluded that the establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per se, inconsistent with international law.” Pompeo added that “calling the establishment of civilian settlements inconsistent with international law hasn’t worked. It hasn’t advanced the cause of peace.” Close to 600,000 Israelis live in West Bank settlements Israel built after it took over the ter-
policy and puts Trump administration at odds with the international community. It is a dramatic shift in US policy and goes against the position taken by international organisations and most other countries. The United States says it no longer views the illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank as “inconsistent with international law”. How does this differ from the past policy? The Palestinians are furious and many obWhile Israel has long disputed the majority servers say it makes Israeli-Palestinian peace of the international community’s determi- even more elusive. Beijing’s patience wanes as fierce battles escalate when riot police attempt to round up university occupiers. China warned on Monday it will not sit back and watch Hong Kong’s protests develop into an “uncontrollable” situation as dozens of demonstrators occupying a university made a daring escape as police fired projectiles. Many more anti-government protesters remained trapped inside the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and two prominent figures were allowed by police onto the campus late on Monday to mediate - a sign there is a growing risk of bloodshed. “The situation is getting more and more dangerous,” Jasper Tsang, a pro-Beijing politician who is the former head of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council, said after he arrived at the school. Police fired tear gas and water cannon against
protesters who tried to break through police cordons and reach the university to reinforce the demonstrators at the centre of a week-long standoff with security forces. Black-clad protesters hurled petrol bombs as they tried to get to the school in the most intense violence in five months of anti-government demonstrations. The South China Morning Post reported a large fire was burning inside the campus and loud explosions were heard late Monday. Dozens of protesters escaped the besieged university by lowering themselves on a rope from a footbridge to a highway. Once on the road, they were seen being picked up by waiting motorcyclists and fleeing. The violence drew a sharp rebuke from China’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Liu Xiaoming. “I think the Hong Kong government is try-
ing very hard to put the situation under control,” Liu told a London press conference. “But if the situation becomes uncontrollable, the central government would certainly not sit on our hands and watch. We have enough resolution and power to end the unrest.” The comments came after a brief and rare deployment of Chinese troops in Hong Kong over the weekend to clean up streets. The People’s Liberation Army has a barracks in an upper-class district of Hong Kong. Asked about a possible intervention, the en-

In an annual show of solidarity, social harmony and multiculturalism, a breathtaking celebration was organized and hosted by the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (AICP) to mark the annual Multicultural Milad-un-Nabiyy event to commemorate the honourable occasion of the birth of the most beloved, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). The AICP was honoured to commemorate the birth of the best of all creations, the mercy to mankind, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and thanks Allah ta^ala for making us amongst the followers of the best of all the Prophets. The celebration was held on Sunday the 10th of November, 2019 coinciding with the 14th of Rabi^ul Awwal, at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey. It was marked by the presence of distinguished Canadian figures sitting side by side next to politicians and dignitaries before a crowd of over 1300 attendees. This year, the prestigious guest list included ministers, MP’s and MLA’s from British Columbia, Harry Bains Minister of Labour, Sukh Dhaliwal MP for Surrey Newton, Ken Hardie MP for Surrey Fleetwood and Port Kells, Garry Begg MLA for Surrey Guildford, Tamara Jansen MP for Cloverdale/ Langley, Rachna Singh MLA for Surrey Green Timbers. National elites included the presence of his Eminence, AICP Vancouver’s Shaykh AbdulRahman Suleiman, community leaders, businesspeople, sponsors and Imams from diverse backgrounds across the Lower Mainland. Encompassing the slogan “Muhammad, peace be upon him – in following you, we succeed”, the annual event amplified the message that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) undisputedly brought guidance and justice to the world. It was a pleasure to hear from Harry Bains, Minister of Labour who represented the Premier of British Columbia, John Horgan. He relayed the message from the Premier who said: “Thanks to the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects for their charitable efforts throughout the year in the City of Surrey.” Following the speech, the main event officially began and unveiled one surprise after another. A sensational speech by His Eminence Shaykh ^AbdulRahman Suleiman – the Shaykh for AICP Vancouver – who once again drew everyone’s attention to his powerful and rousing address in Arabic. He set the scene concisely and highlighted the theme of this year’s Mawlid celebration in the true Arabian style of speech.
In his address, he welcomed attendees, and affirmed the purpose and permissibility of celebrating the birth of Prophet Muhammad. He stressed the importance of following the true and authentic teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Muslims must adhere to this Authentic creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama^ah, clearing Allah from resembling His creations, and to love our Grand Prophet as he deserves. The Mawlid onlookers were treated to a glorious Qur’anic recitation that was followed by a captivating speech by the AICP director in BC, Mr. Mazen Turk, in English, addressing the crowd’s roaring cheers with words urging Muslims to adhere to the fundamentals of this tolerant Religion commanded by Allah; while passionately warning against exploitation, misguidance and extremist ideologies in the name of religion. Adorned in white and green, the Islamic Choir Group eloquently delivered a number of heart-warming performances in praise of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) in Arabic and English. The stage soon became engulfed with melodic and tuneful stage performances that sent the crowd to a high level of jubilation. Al-Hidayah School and The Islamic Education School (TIES) performance was immensely remarkable as well. It began with an impassioned speech from one of its well-respected graduating students. Adorned with vibrant and colourful traditional attire and with smiles etched on their faces, the children knew exactly how to capture our hearts with their words of praise for the Prophet in English and Arabic. We cannot go past the glorious moment when the stage became alit with the jewelled box which contained a trace of the Prophet’s hair peace be upon him. A grand convoy of imams and shaykhs from different cultural groups accompanied the trace of the Prophet peace be upon him that engulfed over 1300 spectators with absolute astonishment, and gathered them to seek tabarruk (blessing) from the hair of the Greatest Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam that was brought especially for Miladun-Nabiyy celebration.. The event ended with a distribution of complimentary dinners by the AICP. The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects extends their appreciation to the Bell Performing Arts Centre teams, the guests and volunteers, all of whom contributed to the success of the Multicultural Milad-unNabiyy Celebration of 2019. We ask Allah to grant us peace and prosperity in the return of this blessed occasion next year.
16 spec i a l Pakistan Opens Visa-Free Border Crossing for Indian Sikh Pilgrims Rabi ul Awwal 24, 1441H Nov 22, 2019
ISLAMABAD - Hundreds of pilgrims Saturday from India’s minority Sikh community crossed the international border with Pakistan without a visa for the first time in 72 years to pay homage to one of their holiest shrines. The rare instance of cooperation to facilitate the religious journey comes amid a sharp deterioration in already tense ties between the nuclear-armed rival countries sparked by recent Indian actions in the disputed Kashmir region. Both India and Pakistan control portions of the Himalayan territory but claim it in its entirety. Indian pilgrims, including senior politicians and officials, traveled through a newly established 4.1-kilometer cross-border corridor, featuring fenced-off sides and leading straight to the shrine in the Pakistani town of Kartarpur in Punjab province. Known as the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, the temple is believed to have been built on the site where the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, spent last 18 years of his life before he died there in the 16th century. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the border corridor, just in time for the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak’s birth on November 12. “I congratulate you and I am happy to be with you today to see that for the first time people can now come from India [through the corridor] to pay the homage,” Khan told thousands of Sikh devotees inside the newly built sprawling complex around the temple. The “historic” opening of the Kartarpur corridor, he said, is a testimony to Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace. “We believe the road to prosperity of the region and a bright future for our coming generation lies in peace,” the Pakistani leader asserted. Khan went on to urge Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to work for a negotiated settlement to the Kashmir dispute so the two countries can jointly fight poverty and bring regional prosperity to their two nations. “I asked Modi, ‘Why can’t we resolve this issue?’ What is happening in Kashmir is beyond territorial issue, it’s about human rights ... They are being treated like animals. If PM Modi is listening to me, then I
would say that peace prevails through justice. Give justice to the people of Kashmir,” he said. Former Indian Sikh prime minister, Manmohan Singh, was among the first pilgrims to cross over into Pakistan to pay respect to the shrine. “I hope India and Pakistan relations improve enormously as a result of this beginning. It is a big moment,” Singh told reporters. Traditionally strained bilateral relations plunged to historic lows last August when New Delhi ended the special constitutional autonomy for Indian-administered Muslimmajority Kashmir region and bifurcated it into two union territories. Indian authorities simultaneously imposed a security lockdown and a communications blackout, though it has since been partially eased. Islamabad rejected the move as a violation of longstanding United Nations resolutions that describe Kashmir as a disputed territory. Pakistan also downgraded diplomatic ties with India. The territorial dispute has sparked two of the three wars the neighbors have fought since gaining independence from Britain in 1947. The minority Sikh community in India has demanded access to the shrine for decades. But bilateral tensions blocked progress until last year when Pakistan itself offered to open the Kartarpur crossing. A large number of devotees from countries such as Canada, Australia and Britain also come to Kartarpur through regular entry points and airports in Pakistan to attend the event. Foreign diplomats based in Islamabad also were flown to Kartarpur to witness the inaugural ceremony. Saturday was the first time since 1947 — when British India was divided into the two separate states of India and Pakistan — that Indian Sikh devotees were able to cross the border and undertake a visa-free visit to the shrine. Until now, pilgrims had to go through a drawn-out visa process, often hampered by mutual tensions, and undertake a long journey through Pakistan to reach the temple.
Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Modi, while inaugurating his side of the corridor, flagged off hundreds of pilgrims from the Indian border city of Gurdaspur. The United States welcomed the opening of the Kartarpur border crossing as an “impressive project” and congratulated both India and Pakistan on this initiative. “We see this as a positive example of neighbors working together for mutual benefit. The newly opened corridor is a step toward promoting greater religious freedom,” State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus noted in a video message she released via Twitter. The border corridor, under a bilateral pact, would give year-round visa-free access to about 5,000 Indian Sikhs each day to the temple, arriving in the morning and returning in the evening.. Pakistan has constructed a road and a bridge over the Ravi River, along with dozens of fully equipped immigration reception centers for pilgrims. Officials said the dining area near the shrine can host more than 2,500 pilgrims simultaneously, where they will be served free food during Guru Nanak’s birth celebrations. Pakistani officials say the massive construction effort has turned the temple into the world’s largest Sikh Gurdwara complex. Already built, or under construction, are a new courtyard, dormitories, locker rooms, a library, a museum, and an embankment to protect the shrine from floods — all in consultation with experts from the Sikh community, the officials noted.

Nawaz Sharif leaves for London from Lahore in air ambulance
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif left for London on Tuesday, 20 days after he was released on bail from a seven-year sentence for corruption. The PML-N supremo, who has been diagnosed with an immune system disorder, is accompanied by his brother Shehbaz Sharif and his personal physician Dr Adnan Khan. “Nawaz Sharif will go to Boston after going through a detailed checkup in London. During his travel, he will stay in Doha for two hours,” PML-N leader Pervaiz Rashid told Reuters. The air ambulance arrived from Doha early morning at Lahore airport’s Haj Terminal. An intensive care unit and an operation theatre has been set up inside while a team of doctors and paramedics are also on board. According to immigration sources, Nawaz’s medical files were handed over to the team traveling with the former prime minister in the air ambulance. Doctors also conducted blood tests prior to the departure.
PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Nawaz’s plane will stop in Qatar for a refuel. The medical team will also be changed. The 69-year-old PML-N supremo, who has bail in two corruption cases and is facing another reference by the National Accountability Bureau, was accompanied to the airport by a large number of supporters as well as party leaders. Party leaders, including Khawaja Asif and Ahsan Iqbal, were also present to see off the leader. The former premier’s mother, other family members and his daughter Maryam — who surrendered her passport to secure her release in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case earlier this month — bid farewell to him at the house. A large number of supporters and workers had gathered outside Jati Umra since morning prior to Nawaz’s departure. In a separate statement issued earlier on Tuesday, Aurangzeb said that doctors completed a medical examination of Nawaz ahead of his departure and he was administered high doses of steroids and medicines to ensure that his condition remains stable during travel. His departure comes a day after the interior ministry issued a notification, allowing the former prime minister to travel abroad for medical treatment, saying that the decision was an “interim arrangement” in the light of the LHC’s order, which was passed last week. In its notification, the ministry reproduced the undertakings provided by She-
hbaz Sharif and Nawaz to the LHC in which the terms of their travel and return have been laid out. The former prime minister’s name remains on the Exit Control List (ECL). Praying for Nawaz’s recovery’ Soon after Nawaz left, premier’s aide Firdous Ashiq Awan wished Nawaz a “speedy recovery so that he can return and face [the courts]”. In a tweet, she said: “[We are] praying that God grants a complete recovery to Nawaz Sharif. We are praying for his health and [for his] speedy recovery so that he can return and face the law. With his conduct, Prime Minister Imran Khan has set a golden example of respect for humanity and supremacy of law.”Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry also reacted to Nawaz’s departure and said that the “journey from ‘why was I expelled’ to ‘expel me for God’s sake’ is now approaching its end”.“When such leadership demands respect for vote, it actually insults the democratic process,” he said in a tweet. “I sympathise with those workers of the PML-N who consider Nawaz Sharif their leader and tire themselves day and night.” Later, in a press conference in Islamabad, Chaudhry said that the government was praying for Nawaz’s health. He added that the “impression that an NRO had been granted should not be there”. LHC order After much deliberation and meetings, the government had agreed to allow Nawaz to
travel abroad, with the condition that indemnity bonds amounting to Rs7-7.5 billion be furnished. The PML-N had rejected the condition and had taken the matter to the LHC, which — in a blow to the Centre — ordered the federal government to remove his name from the ECL without any conditions. The verdict was issued after Nawaz signed a court-approved undertaking, saying that he would return to the country within four weeks. Shehbaz too signed an undertaking, which stated he would “ensure return” of his brother “within four weeks or on certification by doctors that he has regained his health and is fit to return back to Pakistan”. Nawaz was allowed to leave the country for a period of four weeks, extendable on the basis of medical reports. Nawaz, who has been diagnosed with an immune system disorder, was recommended by doctors to go abroad as his condition continued to deteriorate despite treatment. He was rushed to Services hospital from the Kot Lakhpat jail — where he was serving a prison sentence granted by an accountability court that found him guilty of corruption in the Al Azizia — after Dr Khan raised an alarm over the former prime minister’s deteriorated health. Nawaz was granted bail by the Islamabad High Court on humanitarian grounds, in the Al Azizia case earlier this month. He also obtained bail in the ongoing Chaudhry Sugar Mills case, in which he is a suspect, from the LHC.

Life after Fifty
W
e always hear two words like, oh we are no longer any young now, we are getting old or what difference does it make now etc. Life begins when we start living it yes conditions apply. Yes we do have certain physical mental limitation but that’s not the end of world but little inconvenience . Flashback- That’s the thing to be avoided to go in flashback often. Let’s not just live in past because to live in present become slightly difficult. That not only make us sad but at the same time make us incompetent. We can not stop thought from coming but let us not welcome them too. Yes we should feel happy and proud for our past achievements or some great things.
Time on hands-now we have enough time on our hand to cultivate or do the hobbies or activities we always wanted to do. We should find out the activities we can do and we spend time with our seniors and most importantly we can do volunteer work. Big no- the big no is for giving unasked, unwanted advice giving to youngsters and others. Big no for emotional blackmail or taking advantages of family members. Generation gap-let this generation gap do not back fine on us other way round. Let us not feel alien to the new ways of life in present lifestyle or thoughts. We are expected to be more mature and understanding then the young generation. Time table-the very important thing in our life is to have some rules, some time managements and some routines. yes we can tension free days but to enjoy our freedom we need to have some discipline. We have to focus on mind exercise that can be anything like walking or yoga but it has tom be.
Secondly we have to eat healthy and proper food, nutritional food if we are taking some regular medicines we have to take care of our medicine timings. Take interest around us ,in life in general and around us let us line fully rather than just exist the joke life plats with many and most is that in young age one has wishes, wants energy but either no time or money or both. Or some time lots of responsibilities like small children or old parents. In our 50s and 60s we have time money and no responsibilities as such but health or physical condition is issue. The bottom line is that wherever we are in whichever condition we are living whether we are 50 or 15 it is very important to understand the valuable gift of life we have and happiness and what is got to be done is to be done at any stage of life. Just chill – one young girl wrote on face book if daughters allowed to keep parents there will not be old age homes in the country .on that one young boy commented if these
same daughters treat and think at their in-laws as their own parents then not only country but world will not need the old age homes. On a lighter note –if you love something set it free. It is comes back it’s yours. If it doesn’t it never was And if it just sets on sofa watching TV unaware that it is set free you are either married to it or has given birth to it.
Prophetic Wisdom - Generation Gap
T
BY: SADULLAH KHAN hat person is not of us ... the elder who has no compassion for the young and the young who has no respect for the elder.” - Prophet Muhammad The Generation Gap is a continual source of pain and confusion for every successive generation and is often seen as the difficulties and struggles represented in the attitudes and experiences of people of differing ages who share the same time span. The Generation Gap occurs when older and younger people do not understand each other. This is brought about because there arises a lack of communication between one generation and another, espe-
cially between young people and their parents, who may have different perspectives, tastes, outlook, ... Prophetic Example of Bridging the Generational Gap: Our beloved Prophet announced prophethood at the age of forty and therefore, it is well-known that a sizable majority of his companions were much younger than him. Throughout the Prophet’s life, he maintained a most perfect balance between appreciating and respecting the wisdom and the experience of the elder companions such as Khadijah and Abu Bakr as-Siddiq at the same time appreciating and respecting the dynamism and the sharp insights
of the younger companions such as Ali ibn Talib, ‘Aishah and Abdullah ibn Abbas. The beloved Prophet led by example when he kissed his grandchildren at a time in Arabia when such intimacy was not common. We learn from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that, Allah’s Apostle kissed Al-Hasan bin Ali while Al-Aqra’ bin Habis At-Tamim was sitting beside him. Al-Aqra said, “I have ten children and I have never kissed anyone of them.” Allah’s Apostle cast a look at him and said, “Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully.” SOURCE: ISLAMICITY
Stories for Muslim Kids Am I a hypocrite?
O
ne day, Hanzala al Usaidi* (r.a.*) said to his friend Abu Bakr (r.a.),
“Abu Bakr, I have become a hypocrite!” “A’udhubillaahi minash shaytaanir rajeem*! Why are you saying this?” Abu Bakar was shocked. “Wallaahi*,” Hamzala continued, “When I am in the presence of the Prophet (saw) or when we are listening to the Quran from his mouth, or when he reminds us of Jannah*, I feel motivated and energised and inspired! When he reminds us of Naar*, I feel fear and aim to be extra careful in my actions. But the moment I reach home after the gathering, when I meet my wife and children, or when I go back to work after the gathering, I feel different! I often get busy and forget about the matters of Akhirah*. I can’t recognise my own heart anymore!” Abu Bakr said, “You’re right. This is a problem. I feel the same way too! That makes the two of us. We’re both hypocrites! Oh no. Let’s go ask the Prophet!” So, off they both went to see the Prophet (saw)straight away. They knew that the Prophet was the best teacher they ever had and nobody else could answer them in the
best way possible. After listening to their query, Prophet Muhammad (saw) replied, “By Allah*, Hamzala, if you had the same feelings when you are here with me and when you are with your family or when you are at work, the angels in the streets would want to shake hands with you! Why? Because your level of Imaan* is so great. And it is consistent too. (Masha Allah. TabarakAllah. Wow. That would be amazing, wouldn’t it? SubhnanAllah*.) The angels would turn up in broad daylight to come shake hands with you.” “But (let’s try being realistic here)… An hour and an hour.”**Hmmm… “An hour and an hour”? What does the Prophet (saw) mean by “an hour and an hour”? This means that we can put aside an ‘hour’ for our heart’s matters and its purification or cleaning process. And we can put aside another ‘hour’ for our dunya* matters or even entertainment. It does not mean that we can do one hour of good deeds and one hour of bad deeds. For example, we spend one hour listening to an Islamic lecture and we spend one hour at the club or pub, dancing, drinking, singing karaoke or gambling. No! That’s not what the Prophet meant.
What the Prophet meant by the dunya matters was that we have to attend to the necessary and important things that we do for our body, mind and life like eat, drink, go to the bathroom, go to work or school, clean the house, cook, ride the train or car or other vehicle, etc. As for entertainment, we could perhaps read a book, watch a Halal* movie, play a video game, go for a walk, go shopping, spend quality time with your parents or grandparents, enjoy moments with your siblings or cousins or aunties or uncles, sew, paint, fish, solving puzzles, visit friends, etc… There are numerous other Halal dunya activities and Halal entertainment activities that we can do. Can you name one more?
Don’t you just love Islam? Islam is perfect. It teaches us to be balanced. Alhamdulillah*. Moral & Afterthought Islam does not prohibit us to do many normal activities. There are many, many things that we can do without getting into trouble with Allah or with the authorities. These activities are actually Halal. We should not think that going to school or work is actually un-Islamic or a waste of valuable time. Or vacuuming or cooking or sewing is not good as we are not reading the Quran or Hadeeth* books or cleaning the mosque or doing something that is related to Islam. https://storiesformuslimkids.wordpress.com

November is Diabetes Awareness Month
D
ifferences between type 1
Even though diabetes may be caused by many of the same factors as other chronic conditions, people with diabetes often face stigma because there are misconceptions around what causes
always caused by diet or lifestyle choices. Some believe all obese people will eventually develop the disease or pass on diabetes to their children. The truth is, depending on the type, diabetes can be caused by a myriad of factors that researchers are still trying to figure out. Source:diabetescarecommunity.ca Type 1 Diabetes Causes Type 1 diabetes occurs when your immune system starts attacking and destroying the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. Without enough insulin, the body can’t regulate the blood sugar needed to create energy. Although the disease usually occurs during childhood or adolescence, it can also develop in adults. And while it’s definitive cause is still unknown, Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by genetics and exposure to environmental factors that may trigger the disease. These include viruses such as German measles or mumps. If you have a parent or sibling with type 1 diabetes, your chances are slightly increased for developing the condition yourself. Researchers have also discovered that the disease can develop in people who have a variance of genes in their HLA (human leukocyte antigen) complex, which is used to help the immune system function properly. Type 2 Diabetes Causes
More common in adults, type 2 diabetes occurs when your body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn’t produce enough to maintain a normal blood sugar level. Specifically why this happens is still unknown, although genetics and lifestyle factors (such as excess weight and inactivity) can be contributing factors. Being overweight is strongly linked to the development of type 2 diabetes but not everyone with the condition is overweight. Diabetes Canada is proud to join more than 1 billion people in over 160 countries in commemorating World Diabetes Day, the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign. Marked every year on the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin in Canada in 1921 with Charles Best, World Diabetes Day is an opportunity to recognize one of our nation’s greatest achievements. But, this year, Diabetes Canada is asking Canadians to also recognize that we are facing a diabetes epidemic and immediate action is needed to confront the many challenges that still lie ahead for the 11 million Canadians affected by diabetes. “Canada has made an extraordinary contribution to the way in which we live with diabetes, but the need to win the fight to end it is greater than ever,” says Dr. Jan Hux, President and CEO of Diabetes Canada. “The number of Canadians living with diabetes has doubled since 2000, and the cost of this epidemic to Canada’s health-care system is expected to be more than $27 billion this year alone. We simply cannot afford to be complacent, and we need the support of Canadians and their government to turn the tide.” Diabetes Canada is calling on the Government of Canada to support Diabetes 360˚, a national strategy and evidence-based action plan to prevent and manage the diabetes epidemic. I’m also not alone in this. Every morning I run into colleagues making avocado toast, microwaving oatmeal, or pouring out cereal right there in our office. Some bring it in on a day-to-day basis, and some leave their stuff at their desk or in our refrigerators. Of course, I’m lucky to work at a company that provides us with utensils, appliances, milk, and basic condiments—and I know not every company has the same amenities. But as you can tell from my morning routine I like to keep things simple, and I’ve found many ways to make delicious office meals with limited resources, time, and budget. The point is: You can eat breakfast at work. It’s not a crazy concept, and it’s worth a reminder. In fact, to prove my point, here’s a list of stuff you can keep in your desk at work that suf-
• Nuts and dried fruits • Applesauce • Peanut butter and crackers Buy some fruit that can sit on your desk (such as apples, bananas, and avocado) at the beginning of the week and you’ll be looking at better than a good-enough breakfast. Now, I’m not saying you have to do this— eating before work most definitely has its benefits, and if I was more of a morning person I’d enjoy a balanced breakfast in the comfort of my home, too. But I am saying that, if you’re running late but need food to survive, you can still get the most important fice as a good-enough breakfast: • Cereal (dry if you don’t have milk at meal of the day covered while in the office. Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces. There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. The causes and management of these two types of diabetes are very different. What is type 1 diabetes? Type 1 diabetes, formerly referred to as juvenile diabetes, is a disease in which an individual’s insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas get destroyed, causing an absolute lack of insulin. What is type 2 diabetes? Type 2 diabetes, formerly referred to as adult onset diabetes mellitus, is a disease that increases in frequency with advancing age. Individuals can still produce insulin (unlike in type 1 diabetes), but do not produce enough insulin to meet their body’s needs. What causes diabetes?
demic, health-care, government, private industry and patient advocate stakeholders, the evidence-based action plan will enhance the prevention, screening and management of diabetes to achieve better health for Canadians. Diabetes Canada is calling for an investment of $150 million over seven years, which can save the health-care system more than $9 billion while preventing the development of nearly one million diabetes cases. Diabetes Canada is also calling on the public to join a day of action, using an online advocacy tool available at diabetes.ca/strategy to send a message urging the government to fund the strategic action plan in Budget 2019. “The theme of World Diabetes Day 2018 is ‘The Family and Diabetes’,” says Hux. “A recent poll we conducted with Ipsos shows that about half (49%) of Canadians have a family member living with diabetes. We all have a stake in the future of Canada’s healthcare system, and we all have a role to play in asserting Canada’s role as a global leader in ending the diabetes epidemic.” The burden on families of those affected by diabetes is large. A third, or 32 per cent of those living with or caring for someone with diabetes, have missed work due to the disease, including 15 per cent of those that have left the workforce because of it. For Canadians who understand the severity of diabetes, 8 in 10 (82%) rank diabetes as one of the top three diseases that should be prioritized by the Government of Canada, on par with cancer (85%).Sources: Canadian Diabetes Association,
This Is How You Can Have a 10- Minute Morning Routine and Still Eat Breakfast
R
ecently, I shared with the world that I get ready for work in the morning in 10 minutes. If that shocks you, you can read the article. Among the many comments people had about my routine, many emphasized that I wasn’t eating breakfast— which is a totally fair statement considering all the studies say just how important breakfast is for your productivity. And I won’t lie, I don’t always eat breakfast, and I do suffer the consequences (and as a result start my lunch at around 11 AM). But to maintain my super speedy routine and still get some food into my belly, I’ll often bring my breakfast to work. Sometimes that’s a Pop-Tart I toast in our office kitchen, sometimes it’s a bagel I pick up on the way, and sometimes it’s something I’ve prepped the night before and simply eat at my desk.

Disturbing video shows mob attacking man, vandalizing cars in Surrey
VANCOUVER – Troubling video has emerged showing a mob of young men using golf clubs and other makeshift weapons to damage several cars and attack at least one person in Surrey. The video, which has been circulating on the WhatsApp messaging platform, was disturbing enough to prompt a response Friday from Mayor Doug McCallum, who suggested mob violence is happening with “alarming frequency” in his city.
“In August, another large brawl in the Strawberry Hill area was caught on video. This behaviour is repugnant and puts the public at risk,” McCallum said in a statement.“It is imperative that the RCMP take immediate and strong action to get a handle on this kind of mob violence that is occurring far too frequently in Surrey.” Surrey RCMP said the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. Authorities received two calls about the attack, one from a victim and one from a witness. Investigators have yet to identify any of the suspects, but only recently became aware of the recording. Cpl. Elenore Sturko urged anyone who recognizes the men in the video to reach out to police.“While this incident
and video is disturbing, having such a wide distribution could potentially help further our investigation and identify those involved,” Sturko said in a news release.“We share the community’s concerns about this act of public violence and urge anyone with information to come forward.” In response to the incident, the citizens’ group Wake Up Surrey called on elected officials at the provincial and federal levels to address “this increasing type of crime occurring on our streets.” “There should be zero tolerance towards such despicable behaviour and the swiftest legal means to control this violence,” the group said in a statement. Islamic Perspective on Animal Welfare
BY: ASMA JARAD According to Census of Marine Life scientists, there are an estimated 8.7 million living species on earth, and yet the Quran teaches us that humans are the highest of creation. With this elevated status comes an elevated responsibility. This responsibility encompasses not only how we treat our own bodies, actions, and interactions with each other, but also how we treat other creations such as animals. Yes, animals have rights and a legitimate place in Islam. The Quran refers to animals as independent communities to be acknowledged and respected: “And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered” (Quran 6:38). At the same time, many animals serve numerous purposes; some of which are for our direct beneficial use, consumption, and companionship while others are part of the circle of life and benefit us indirectly. Regardless of whether we gain any benefit from the animals around us, the Islamic perspective on animal welfare includes treating all animals as in-
dependent communities sharing this earth, finding the balance between respecting their independence while at the same time enjoying their benefits and friendship as God intended, all the while avoiding any type of cruelty toward animals. Despite not having the free will or brain power that is bestowed upon humans, animals nonetheless live their lives the way God created them to obey His laws and follow the natural cycle of the earth. We are reminded in the Quran, “Do you not see that God is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him], and God is Knowing of what they do.” (Quran 24:41). This verse shows us that animals have duties and connections with the larger world, including praising God. Hence, we must respect their independent existence without infringing on their rights and responsibilities. When Prophet Nuh (Peace Be Upon Him [PBUH]) built his ark, he was not only commanded to save the believers among his tribe, but also to preserve the existing animal species by collecting a pair of each. This shows us the importance and value of animals within our living cycle. In the Quran, it says, “[So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, ‘Load upon the ship of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed.’ But none had believed with him, except a few.” (Quran 11:40). In ad-
dition, many animals provide us with food, fertilize our plants, as well as inedible, yet similarly valuable products, such as wool, fur, and leather. These benefits are mentioned in the Quran: “Do you not see that
God has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about God without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him]. (Quran 31:20). An important piece of information here is that despite the overwhelming benefits we gain from animals, God has commanded us to nonetheless share the earth with all living creatures. Therefore, although we gain many benefits from animals, we must remember that we are obligated to care for them and treat them as blessings and with compassion, for the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Anyone who shows mercy, even to an animal meant for slaughtering, will be shown mercy by God on the Day of Rising.”–Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Book 20, Hadith 10. According to the Prophet’s (PBUH) teachings, farmers and caretakers must abide by certain guidelines when dealing with animals: a: Provide appropriate food and fresh water b: Provide a safe and comfortable shelter c: Separate them from aggressive behaviors of each other d: Allow males and females to mate during mating seasons e: Not to harvest them for food faster than their ability to breed
f: Not to overburden them g: Not to neglect them, especially in sickness and advanced age These Islamic directives came to us over 700 years ago. Similarly, in more modern times, we have what is internationally known as the Five Freedoms outlining five aspects of animal welfare as developed in the United Kingdom in 1965 and formalized in 1979 by the United Kingdom Farm Animal Welfare Council. Subsequently, these Five Freedoms were adopted by internationally prominent animal welfare societies, including the World Organization for Animal Health and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Five Freedoms are: 1:Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor 2:Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area 3:Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment 4:Freedom to express normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind 5:Freedom from fear and distress by en-
suring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
When most people in the West hear the term, “animal protection from cruelty,” they may think of domestic pets such as dogs and cats with little to no regard for livestock, birds, and wild animals. It seems that these
