T began with confusion and ended without a bang. As with all such crises in Pakistan, we were held captive for three days, with many a prediction of gloom and doom — there is no other kind — before it ended (to the satisfaction of few). The petition that wasn’t turned into a suo motu that wasn’t when a petitioner approached the Supreme Court against army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa’s extension, and the chief justice, who had so far resisted the temptation of public interest litigation under Article 184(3), picked it up and heard it. And he did so despite the petitioner’s change of mind; the latter wanted to take a U-turn, which has become the flavour of the day, but apparently couldn’t do so because the court had made up its mind. Three days of faulty notifications with the wrong dates issued under incorrect articles of the law and the court let matters be, on the condition that parliament address the issue once and for all. Parliament is supreme, you see. But what if this supreme institution had decided that the matter was best left as it is? And yet the ‘crisis’ has highlighted how little has changed in our polity. It indicated once again that judicial activism or judicial restraint is the choice of individuals and not built into institutions. The present chief justice had focused on setting the (judicial) house in order and he did so despite some criticism from those who had come to admire his predecessors’ care for all matters ex-

‘Hell of Hatred’! By: Gulshan Alani Hell of hatred created by the evil people is the sign of an era of antiChrist, and anti-Creator-GOD; the time of trials and tribulations, and the evil activity of sweet talker Devil Dajjaal playing his treacherous tricks to misguide the mankind against the Creator-GOD whom he hates, according to the Divine prophecies. One of the most hated names is ‘Muslim’: true Muslims are the followers of Creator-GOD, truly connected to HIM and HIS given religion Islam and practicing Islam openly with honesty and truth and testifying the truth of Divine Authority. That’s why the victims of such terrible trials and tribulations are mainly the practicing true ‘Muslims’. Whose enemies also includes the fake Muslims anti-Islam, using the fake ID of Islam and fake ID of Muslim. Reality is that Islam is also most hated religion, among those who are illiterate in understanding the
gested on a TV talk show recently that it may be better to specify a term, making it longer if need be than the present one, than simply provide a blanket cover to an extension. He has a point. Because the latter — once codified into law — will make it next to impossible for any individual and any government to not agree to one; such is the politics which made the past practice kosher. But once again, it remains to be seen if parliament actually has the space to debate and decide and won’t just end up agreeing to whatever is sent its way. Many fear that this is what will happen — legalising a political reality so to speak. Whether that is better than an ambiguity in law which ignored the situation on the ground will be unveiled over time. And what if the parliament is not able to legislate within six months? It is a question already being asked in whispers. Will the court be asked for another deadline? A review of its first verdict? The possibilities are many. Meanwhile, uncertainty will emerge as the only constant. And the only winner, while experts hold forth on how such steps strengthen democracy. But what if these court proceedings, one day, are compared to those where the judges asked the government of the day if it planned to try Musharraf under Article 6? In hindsight, what did it achieve? There is still no clear answer.

Just practicing Islam doesn’t mean they are ISIS members, this is the most ignorant unethical notion of some evil doers under the influence of Devil Dajjaal-anti-Christ. That is evident in the most bizarre barbaric, most gruesome treatment of Uyghur Muslims, being crucified by the Chinese Pr. Opposition asks SC to pass order on appointment of CEC, 2 ECP members as deadlock persists
Members of the opposition on Wednesday approached the Supreme Court requesting it to “pass an appropriate order” in the wake of an impasse in parliament on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The current CEC is set to retire tomorrow, after which “the ECP will become defunct, thereby halting the entire electoral system of the country”, a petition filed by the opposition stated. The positions of ECP members from Sindh and Balochistan have been lying vacant following the retirement of Abdul Ghaffar Soomro and retired Justice Shakeel Baloch in Janu-
ary with no consultation between the prime minister and the leader of the opposition until recently. Eleven opposition members have signed the petition to the Supreme Court, namely Akram Khan Durrani, Ahsan Iqbal, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Farhatullah Babar, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, Muhammad Usman Khan Kakar, Muhammad Tahir Bizinjo, Muhammad Hashim Babar, Muhammad Owais Siddiqui, and Rana Shafiq Khan. The petition contended that Article 213 of the Constitution is silent over the instance where no consensus is reached in parliament over the appointment. This “will lead to a Constitutional crisis in the country,” it argued. “The only viable option left would be to approach this August Court,” it added. The petition noted that although the terms of two members of the ECP had ended on January 26, the commission had been functional with the presence of the CEC and the two members. “In the near future the situation will change altogether,” it said. Meanwhile, science and technology minister Fawad Chaudhry was of the view that things were running smoothly between the government and the opposition. “We hope that the gap remaining will also be bridged,” said the minister in a post on Twitter. “Politicians should be in agreement on important reforms and issues. These nominations will mark an important achievement,” he said. Source:dawn.com

‘Niazi-NAB nexus once more defeated,’ says Shehbaz Sharif after pleas challenging his bail withdrawn
PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday held a press conference in London to declare that the “Niazi-NAB nexus had once more been dealt a defeat”. His remarks came a day after PTI senior
counsel Naeem Bokhari withdrew a set of appeals challenging bail granted to Shehbaz in the Ashiana case and the Ramzan Sugar Mills case. NAB had failed to convince the Supreme Court what role the former chief minister had played in the Ashiyana-i-Iqbal Housing Scheme. It had sought to establish that Shehbaz had abused his authority as chief minister. During the hearing, the apex court was unable to understand how the former chief minister was guilty of misusing his authority or committing or indulging in corruption when he himself sent the matter to a committee and later to the Punjab AntiCorruption Establishment when the allegations of procedural irregularities came to his notice. In today’s press conference, Shehbaz
discussed the court proceedings and criticised how “despite an army of NAB prosecutors”, PTI’s Naeem Bukhari had appeared to defend the case. “When Naeem Bukhari sahib saw things are not panning out for him, he voluntarily withdrew his applications which had sought the cancellation of my bail.” Shehbaz said that over the past yearand-a-half a malicious propaganda had been undertaken by “Imran Khan Niazi and his ministers” in which poisonous remarks were made but the comments given by the honourable bench, and especially the chief justice, in yesterday’s hearing had “separated all the truth from the lies”. The PML-N president said he had never before seen a prime minister “more divisive,
egoistic, ungrateful and full of anger” than Prime Minister Imran Khan. “No one in the country has any doubt of the way he attempted to push the opposition against the wall, seeking their conviction in false cases and spewing poisonous remarks against them. “If he had spent even onetenth of this energy and time in changing Pakistan’s fortunes, the country would not have been in the dire state it is,” said Shehbaz. He told the media he is “confident that Mian Nawaz Sharif will also be proven innocent”. “Under Mian Nawaz Sharif ’s leadership, from 2014-2018, despite tough challenges, the credit for all development projects completed goes to him and his team.” Source:dawn.com
stan’s stance is being weakened. Please, do not minimise what Pakistan has done. He assured the House that the New Delhi’s move of abrogating occupied Kashmir’s special status was being condemned by Indian politicians as well. PPP leader and former prime minister Raja
Pervez Ashraf regretted that the government had failed to even force India to lift the curfew in occupied Kashmir. Munir Orakzai from Fata challenged Qureshi’s claim that the PTI government had taken a lead among all the previous governments on highlighting and internationalising Kashmir. He said India had never dared to take such a drastic step of annexing Kashmir in the past. Foreign Minister Qureshi urges opposition not to ‘minimise’ efforts on Kashmir issue The National Assembly’s session began on Wednesday with heated speeches by both opposition and government members over the Kashmir issue. The sitting began with opposition members’ criticism of the government’s “failure” to highlight the Kashmir crisis, with both PPP and PML-N advising the government to declare a “diplomatic emergency”. In response, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi urged the opposition not to “minimise” Pakistan’s efforts to highlight the Kashmir issue around the world.“When Pakistan’s efforts are minimised, you are being minimised and Paki-

U.S. Congress pushes ahead on 200,000 evacuated as Typhoon Trump impeachment with nation split Kammuri lashes Philippines
The U.S. House of Representatives is plunging into a landmark impeachment week, with Democrats who once hoped to sway Republicans now facing the prospect of an ever-hardening partisan split over the historic question of removing President Donald Trump from office. Lawmakers were getting their first look Monday night — behind closed doors — at the impeachment report from the House intelligence committee. The report, to be released Tuesday, is expected to forcefully make the Democrats’ case that Trump engaged in what chairman Adam Schiff calls impeachable “wrongdoing and misconduct” in withholding military aid while pressuring Ukraine to investigate Democrats and Joe Biden while. For Republicans, the proceedings are simply a “hoax,” with Trump insisting he did nothing wrong and his party allies in line behind him. Late Monday, he tweeted his daily complaints about it all and then added a suggestive question: “Can we go to Supreme Court to stop?” He didn’t elaborate. It’s all boiling down to a historic test of political judgment in a case that is dividing Congress and the country. Departing Monday for a NATO meeting in London, Trump criticized the timing of the impeachment inquiry hearing, which will occur while he is out of the country. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the NATO trip is “one of the most important journeys we make as president” and the summit date was established a year ago. He said Republicans are united in opposing impeachment and the inquiry is backfiring on Democrats, adding, “I think it is going to be a tremendous boost for the Republicans.” Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the NATO trip is “one of the most important journeys we make as presi-
The Philippines evacuated 200,000 people in coastal and mountainous areas amid fears of flooding and landslides, and closed the country’s main international airport, as a powerful typhoon hit the Southeast Asian nation. Typhoon Kammuri, the Philippines 20th typhoon this year, hit the main Luzon island just before midnight local time on Tuesday (16:00 GMT on Monday). The strengthening storm is locally referred to as Typhoon Tisoy. Al Jazeera’s Jamela Alindogan was in Albay, about 12 hours southeast of Manila, and said it “felt like a full-blown war” as the storm hit. Alindogan said the local airport had been closed and it was still too early to know how badly coastal villages and outlying areas had been affected. The Philippine disaster agency said 200,000 people had been evacuated from dozens of provinces in southern Luzon as authorities raised the cyclone warning level for 35 provinces and told people in areas in the path of the Category-4-equivalent typhoon to be on alert for possible landslides, storm surges and floods triggered by heavy winds and rain. The typhoon passed near the capital, Manila, around lunchtime on Tuesday, and officials said the city’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport would be closed from 11am to 11pm local time. Dozens of flights were cancelled or diverted and schools in affected provinces were closed. Lovely Suarez, 48, spent all morning knocking on her neighbours’ doors in an area of Manila that had been classified a danger zone. Their homes are built on a spit of land that juts out from the beach leaving the com-
dent” and the summit date was established a year ago. He said Republicans are united in opposing impeachment and the inquiry is backfiring on Democrats, adding, “I think it is going to be a tremendous boost for the Republicans.” Possible articles of impeachment are focused on whether Trump abused his office as he pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a July 25 phone call to launch investigations into Trump’s political rivals. At the time, Trump was withholding $400 million US in military aid, jeopardizing key support as Ukraine faced an aggressive Russia at its border. The report from the intelligence panel also was expected to include material the Democrats say suggests obstruction of Congress, based on Trump’s instructions for his administration to defy subpoenas for documents and testimony. The next step comes Wednesday, when the judiciary committee gavels its own hearings open ahead of a possible impeachment vote by the full House by Christmas. That would presumably send the issue to the Senate for a trial in January. The Democratic majority on the intelligence committee says its report, compiled after weeks of testimony from current and former diplomats and administration officials, will speak for itself in laying out the president’s At least 208 people are believed to have been killed in Iran during a security crackdown on actions toward Ukraine. protests that came after a surprise petrol price Source: CBC News increase, Amnesty International has said. Anger in China as US House passes Uighur crackdown bill
China has reacted angrily after the US House of Representatives passed a bill requiring the Trump administration to toughen its response to Xinjiang, where the more than one million Muslims, mostly ethnic Uighurs, are being held in re-education camps. In a statement released shortly after the Uighur Act of 2019 was passed, China’s foreign ministry on Wednesday condemned the move, saying the bill “wantonly smears China’s efforts to eliminate and combat extremism”. The United States’s lower house voted to back the bill 407 to one in a vote on Tuesday. It has still to be approved by the Senate before it can be sent to President Donald Trump. The White House has yet to say whether Trump would sign or veto it. “We urge the US to immediately correct its mistake, to stop the above bill on Xinjiang from becoming law, to stop using Xinjiang as a way to interfere in China’s domestic af-

According to its information, families of victims were threatened and warned not to speak to the media, or to hold funeral services, Amnesty said. It described the death toll as “evidence that Iran’s security forces went on a horrific killing spree” and urged the international community to help ensure accountability. “Unless the authorities are held to account by the United Nations and the international community, the unlawful killing will worsen and we will see more bloodshed,” Bahreini said. Meanwhile, Omid Memarian, deputy director at the US-based Centre for Human Rights in Iran, called on Tehran to allow Javaid Rehman, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, to enter the country and “investigate these crimes”. “Iran has repeatedly failed to investigate cases of rights violations in the past decades and to hold perpetrators accountable,” he told Al Jazeera. For its part, the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN in Geneva said in a statement to Al Jazeera that Tehran “has good reasons to suspect the credibility of the reports released by AI [Amnesty International] due to its past pattern of over-reliance on discredited and unreliable sources and because of certain in-built biases concerning Iran.” It added: “Iran fully respects the right to peaceful assemblies. What is Tawbah & why should We Repent to Allah? By: Muneer Bint Fayaz
T
Assalamualaikum Dear Brothers & Sisters, omorrow is too late, yesterday is all gone and now is the right time to repent & change your life and the hereafter before the opportunity is gone. It is no wonder that we all commit sins, but it is necessary for us to return to Allah apologetically after any committed sin. It is said; he who does good deeds is close to Allah and he who does always sinful deeds is close to the devil and he who does good deeds after committing of a sin is a successful person. Those who constantly repent are the most beloved to Allah. Allah says in the Qur’an: Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” Surah Baqarah (2:222) ‘Abdullah bin Busr said that: The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: “Glad tidings to those who find a lot of seeking forgiveness in the record of their deeds.” Sunan Ibn Majah 3818 Meaning of Tauba/ sincere repentance Tauba means repenting for a sin, promising Allah to not repeat the same evil again and returning to Him alone. Repentance is the beginning in the life of a person who intends to walk in the path of religion. It is the first step of discipline, the key to guidance to the straight path, the weapon of purification of those who wish to come close to Allah and is a dear thing to all prophets. If we only know our actual worth, we would never humiliate ourselves by doing sins. While we know our actual purpose in this life is to worship Allah and not to please ourselves. Allah says: And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, “There is no deity except Me, so worship Me. Surah Al-Anbiya (21:25) Even Allah’s Apostle Prophet ( )ﷺwho was the pious, sinless human being the earth has ever witnessed used to seek Allah’s forgiveness over 70 times a day. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺsaying, “I swear by Allah that I seek Allah’s Pardon and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.” [Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1870]. What is sin? Doing an act which has be prohibited by Allah and to the doer of any such action is held accountable and is liable to some sort of punishments by Allah, sometimes the punishment will have to be borne only in this world and sometimes in both worlds. Sins are like flat tyres, people with them go nowhere if not changed at the right time. The worst scenario is when sins turns into habit so much so that sometimes any sin performed regularly become culture which we can’t drop. No wonder sins may sound or look tempting and irresistible but there’s a line above and below everything we do. Sometimes we know that we are addicted to a certain type of sin but waiting for them to
be told or just finds it hard to drop as we are used to it so much that it has become an integrated part of life. So, what’s the solution to this condition? We must every now keep checking our situation, our actions, our state of Imaan, closeness to our deen and our indulgence in good work and good deeds. Never pause in your sins so much that you put our Akhirah on risk, just drop the sin and move away from it. Easier said than done but please try, just take one step then see how Allah makes it easy for you to turn away from bad, even He can turn your bad deeds to good deeds, insha Allah. Talk about it to the upcoming taker of such sin or bad habit. Warn them of the dangers in such sin. Sins do not fall from heavens, they grow with us, they grow because we find joy in living with them, maybe we are proud of it in secret or in the open or may be because we do it as everyone around is doing too. But my dear brothers & sisters any sin is contagious, you don’t need to be physically strong to beat it, but you first need to prepare your mind with the wisdom of staying far from it or having and replacing it with a better habit you enjoy and proud of, insha Allah. Remember, with strong determination no sin is too hard to replace with a better good action or habit, just make up your mind. Also remember, the accepted & beloved deeds are those done only for the sake of Allah and when one abstains from sins or bad deeds only for the sake of Allah nothing like that. Is there any good that sins give you? No, only it takes you away from your creator and worsens your hereafter. No attainment of heart and soul at all. Remember, we belong to Allah and the peace of heart and mine can only be found. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺsaid, “Allah, the Exalted, has said: ‘I have prepared for my righteous slaves what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and the mind of no man has conceived.’ If you wish, recite: ‘No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do.”‘ Surah Al-Sajda (32:17) [Al-Bukhari and Muslim, Hadith 1881]. Few Advantages of Sincere Repentance or Tawbah
1. You will be counted amoungts the best The best of sinners are those who repent, and Allah loves those who keep going back to Him very often. Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: “Allah, the Exalted, will continue to stretch out His Hand in the night so that the sinners of the day may repent, and continue to stretch His Hand in the daytime so that the sinners of the night may repent, until the sun rises from the west”.[Muslim, Hadith 16] 2. Allah pardons, forgives the sins of the one who repents. Allah says: Indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance. Surah Ta-Ha (20:82). 3. Allah relieves the repentant from anxiety, worries and problems. Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah ()ﷺ said, “If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.” [Abu Dawud, Hadith 1873]. 4. Allah erases the poverty; his shortage is reduced, and he is being directed to better opportunities. 5. Allah opens the means of sustenance. Allah volumes up his livelihood and survival. 6. Allah relieves the repentant from grieve and struggles or hurdles. Al-Agharr Al-Muzani (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of
Allah ( )ﷺsaid, “Sometimes I perceive a veil over my heart, and I supplicate Allah for forgiveness a hundred times in a day.” [Muslim, Hadith 1869]. 7. Allah removes the black spot which has been placed on the sinner’s heart after his indulgence in the sin. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ( )ﷺsaid: When the believer commits sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents and gives up that sin and seeks forgiveness, his heart will be polished. But if (the sin) increases, (the black spot) increases. That is the Ran that Allah mentions in His Book: “Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn.” [Hadith 4385, 83:14] 8. Allah increases or gives sustenance to the repentant from such places which he would have never ever thought he would get from; his sustenance is been made easy and comfortable. 9. Allah generates gardens and flowing rivers, sends beneficial rain from the sky such is the benefits of seeking His forgiveness. Allah says: ‘And Nuh (A.S) said; ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers and give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers’. Surah Nuh (71:10-12) Anas (RAA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger ( )ﷺsaid: “All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent often.” Related by At·Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah with a strong chain of narrators. Hadith 1477 Your takeaway from this lesson: 1:Keep seeking forgiveness from Allah sincerely. 2:Recite different duas of forgiveness, even if just saying ‘Astaghfirullah’ with pure intention. As solutions to all your problems can be found with constant repentance, insha Allah. In the next part we will learn about the Conditions and Four principles of Tawbah, insha Allah. May Allah help us to repent & seek His forgiveness in the way accepted, Aameen Ya Rab! JazakAllahu Khair Source:understandquran.com

No apology from PM Trudeau after U.S. Trump calls Canada ‘slightly delinquent’ for President Trump calls him ‘two-faced’ not meeting NATO defence spending goals
OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not apologize after U.S. President Donald Trump called him “two-faced” in the wake of a video of the PM apparently speaking candidly to other world leaders about the president.“Last night, I made a reference to the fact that there was an unscheduled press conference before my meeting with President Trump and I was happy to take part of it, but it was certainly notable,” PM Trudeau said on Wednesday. When reporters pressed Trudeau on the issue, he neither apologized nor confirmed whether he had yet spoken to Trump about the video and its fallout. Instead, Trudeau explained that the remarks caught on camera were simply informing other foreign leaders that Trump had announced the location of the next G7 meeting, Camp David, during an unscheduled press conference. ”I think we recognize that there [is], as we talk to G7 leaders, an interest in where the next G7 meeting is going to be and I was pleased to share with them the story of how that came about, that we are going to be gathering, apparently, in Camp David in the coming year for the G7 meeting,” said Trudeau. Trump did not appear to view the videotaped conversation the same way. “Well he’s two-faced,” the president said on Wednesday, when asked about the conversation in which Trudeau seemed to make reference to the president’s lengthy, unplanned media availability the day before. Trump went on to speculate about Trudeau’s motivation for engaging in the gossip – namely, Canada’s failure to meet the recommended defence spending target of 2 per cent of gross domestic product. “Trudeau, he’s a nice guy. I find him to be a nice guy, but the truth is, I called him out on the fact that he’s not paying 2 per cent, and I guess he’s not very happy about it. I mean, you were there. A couple of you were there,” Trump told reporters. “He should be paying more than he’s paying. And he understands it. So I can imagine he’s not that happy. But that’s the way it is.” After making the comments, Trump was recorded talking about them when he appeared to believe he wasn’t on the record. According to CTV’s Richard
Madan, Trump’s audio was picked up on a hot microphone belonging to a radio reporter who was travelling with the president.“That was funny when I said they guy’s two-faced,” said Trump in the recording. In Trudeau’s own candid video, the prime minister was speaking to French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Princess Anne, daughter of the Queen. The video, which was shot during a reception at Buckingham Palace late Tuesday, shows Johnson asking Macron why he was late. In response, Trudeau quips, “he was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top.” Though the president is never mentioned by name, Trump had taken multiple questions from journalists during an unscheduled news conference ahead of meetings with Trudeau, Macron, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Trudeau went on to say, without a clear context, that “You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor.” In his press conference Wednesday, Trudeau explained this part of the conversation as having been a reference to the reaction political staff have to unscheduled announcements. “I think that was an unscheduled announcement, and I think everyone’s team – every different leader has teams who every now and then have their jaws drop at unscheduled surprises, like that video itself, for example,” Trudeau joked. Despite Trudeau’s levity when pressed on the viral video, the initial gossiping and Trump’s fiery reaction comes as Canada and the U.S. are working to finalize a trade deal – something that could be impacted by a change in diplomatic relations. Still, Trudeau insisted there is no problem in his relationship with Trump. “I think people know that the relationship between Canada and the United States is deep and goes far beyond the relationship between prime minister and the president, although I will say, as you know all know, we have a very good and constructive relationship between me and the president,” said Trudeau. The gossiping and name-calling does come in stark contrast to the mood between the two world leaders yesterday, when Trump said of Trudeau that it was “an honour to be with a friend,” and touted their “very good relationship.” The prime minister echoed Trump’s sentiments yesterday, saying the relationship between Canada and the United States is “is incredibly strong, I don’t think it’s ever been stronger.” Source: ctvnews.ca
U.S. President Donald Trump says Canada is “slightly delinquent” compared to other NATO allies failing to meet their defence spending targets. In a media availability with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ahead of a joint meeting on Tuesday, Trump was asked about his repeated references to NATO allies not hitting the agreed-upon target of spending two per cent of their GDP on defence as “delinquent,” and was asked how he viewed Canada’s failure to do the same. “Slightly delinquent, I would say Canada, but they’ll be okay. I have confidence,” Trump responded. “Some are major delinquents, well below one per cent, and then if something happens we’re supposed to defend them? And it’s not really fair.” NATO members agreed in 2014 to spend two per cent of their GDP on defence by 2024. Almost five years later, though, most are still not hitting that goal. According to a report published by NATO earlier this year, Canada’s defence spending for 2019 is projected to come in at 1.31 per cent of its GDP. A separate ranking from the same month, excluding contributions to military pensions, projected Canada would end up at 1.27 per cent for the year. Two years ago, that number was slightly higher at 1.44 per cent because of a one-off adjustment to those pensions, as noted in an assessment of Canadian defence spending done in May 2019 by the Canadian Global Affairs Institute. Trump was then asked whether he would recommit to the NATO principle of shared defence even if faced with the decision of defending a member country that does not spend the target amount. “It’s a very interesting question, isn’t it? It also depends on your definition of delinquent,” he said, suggesting he might look more favourably on countries spending a higher percentage of their GDP on defence than on those at the lower end of the spectrum. The question of defence spending prompted repeated questions throughout the course of the media availability, with Trump at one point suggesting the U.S. might need to put Canada on a “payment plan” to get to two per cent. “We’ll put Canada on a payment plan. I’m sure the prime minister would love that,” Trump said, before turning to Trudeau and asking, “What are you at? What’s your number?” “The number that we talk about is a 70 per cent increase over these past years and for
Jason Kenney said after the meetCanadian provincial leaders seek more Premier ing, referring to the economic aid program. a political conservative, lauded the money for healthcare and struggling oil patch Kenney, “united voice of premiers across the coun-
The leaders of Canada’s provincial and territorial governments showed a united front on Monday in demanding more money from the federal government for healthcare and for provinces facing economic hard times. The 13 premiers – who have diverse party affiliations – gathered for the first time since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals were re-elected in October. The group, known as the Council of the Fed-
eration, called on Trudeau to increase federal funding for the public healthcare system, which is run by the provinces, before moving to expand coverage for prescription drugs, a key Trudeau election pledge. The premiers also urged that a federal program designed to help regions mired in an economic slump be strengthened. “I am very happy with the progress that we made in our fight for fairness,” Alberta
try” in supporting the measure. Trudeau gained the most seats in Parliament in October’s federal election, but fell short of a majority and failed to secure a single seat in either Alberta or Saskatchewan, the heart of the country’s struggling oil industry. There has been a growing sense of alienation in Alberta and Saskatchewan since the 201415 global oil price crash, which has driven up unemployment and hurt growth in the western provinces. The premiers want the government to make the transfer system “more responsive to economic circumstances and downturns in resource sectors,” they said in a joint statement.Trudeau last month appointed his former foreign minister, Alberta-born Chrystia Freeland, as his deputy and put her in charge of relations with the provinces and territo-
the coming years, including significant investments in our fighter jets, significant investments in our naval fleets,” Trudeau said in response. “We are increasing significantly our defence spending from previous governments that cut.” That figure is a reference to the spending commitments outlined in the 2017 Liberal defence policy review. Those included $62 billion in new money for the military over 20 years, bringing Canada up to 1.4 per cent — but still a far cry from the two per cent target. But much of that money has not yet been spent. Much of it is attached to large-scale capital projects like the fighter jet replacement and the awarding of planned contracts for new ships. Trump then asked the question again: “Okay. Where are you now in terms of your number?” Trudeau glanced at a number of senior officials seated off-camera, who spoke but whose remarks were indistinguishable. “We’re at one …” Trudeau appeared to listen closely. “One point three?” Trump seemed to ask the officials. “One point four. One-four. And continuing to move forward,” Trudeau then responded. “They’re getting there, they’re getting there,” Trump then told reporters. “They know it’s important to do and their economy is doing well. They’ll get there quickly, I think. It’s to their benefit.” Trudeau then jumped back in, stressing Canada’s other forms of support to NATO. “And the president knows well as well that Canada has been there for every NATO deployment,” he said. “We have consistently stepped up, sent our troops into harm’s way. We’re leading in Iraq, we’re leading in NATO in Latvia. “We continue to step up like most of our allies, and there are some countries that, even though they might reach the two per cent, don’t step up nearly as much and I think it’s important to look at what is actually being done. “The United States and all NATO allies know that Canada is a solid, reliable partner and will continue to defend NATO and defend our interests.” Source: Global News ries. There was no immediate comment from either Trudeau’s or Freeland’s offices. The unexpected consensus that emerged from the meeting, which was held near Toronto, may spell trouble for Trudeau, who will need the premiers’ support if he wants to fulfill his election promise to introduce a national prescription drug plan. The prescription coverage plan “must be developed in partnership with provinces and territories,” the premiers said in their statement. Some of them insisted after the meeting that there be an increase in federal contributions to healthcare before they discuss the prescription drug plan. Canada’s new parliament will meet for the first time on Thursday, when the government’s priorities will be outlined in the socalled Throne Speech. Many of the premiers have met one-on-one with Trudeau since the election, and the full council is expected to sit down with the prime minister early next year. The program was attended by well over 500 people, representing a healthy crosssection of the local community, and also included many non-Muslims including Sikhs and Hindus, who had gathered to pay their respects to Holy Prophet PBUH. The chief guest at this occasion was Professor Allama Dr. Pir Syed Shahzad Mustafa Al-Hussaini, custodian of Astana Aliya Shahenshah-e-Wilayat, Gujrat, who travelled from New York to especially take part in the program. The MP for Surrey-Newton Hon. Sukh Dhaliwal was also present and presented certificate of appreciation to Bullay Shah Academy for its noble work in the community. The program started after Isha Prayers with the recitation of Holy Quran by Imam Sheikh Malik, which was followed by recitation of nasheeds and presenting tribute of respect and love in the court of Holy Prophet PBUH. Pir Afzal Ahmed Naqshbandi welcomed the attendants in his opening remarks. He reminded everyone that we are lucky to be born in the ummah of the Holy Prophet PBUH who has been sent as a mercy and blessing to everyone in this world. The very first creation of Allah SWT was the noor of Holy Prophet PBUH and the rest of the universe was then created from His noor. He also spoke, in stirring terms, of the love for Holy Prophet PBUH held by various saints of the ummah and explained that the path to salvation lies only in the love for Holy Prophet PBUH. Speaking at the occasion, Sukh Dhali-
wal, noted that the strength and beauty of Canada lays in its multicultural society. He thanked Bullay Shah Academy for its hard work in bringing the different elements of the society together and holding a successful event to commemorate the Mawlid of Holy Prophet PBUH. In his masterful and transcendent keynote speech, Qibla Pir Syed Shahzad Mustafa, expanded upon the remarks of Pir Afzal Ahmed Naqshbandi, and narrating the story of Baba Ratan Lal Hindi, the companion of Holy Prophet PBUH, from Bhatinda, India, who was blessed with long life by Holy Prophet PBUH, explained how the blessings of Holy Prophet PBUH encompass the entire humanity and not just the Muslims. Hazrat Pir Sahib also explained the tafsir of the Ayat “And know that the Messenger of Allah is among you” (49:7), and narrated, with examples, the blessings and special mercy received by the saints of the ummah, all of whom truly understood the meaning of this ayat and acted in their lives accordingly. The full sermon can be viewed at Anjuman Khudam-e-Suffia’s facebook page: facebook.com/aks00786. Bob Ibrahim thanked the participants and in particular, Hazrat Pir Syed Shahzad Mustafa, for participating in the event and reiterated that the salvation in both the worlds lays in following the message of Holy Prophet PBUH and the love for His noble being and His Ahl-e-Bayt. Bullay Shah Academy and Anjuman Khudam-e-Sufiya hold a monthly multifaith event on the last Saturday of every month. The next event will be held on December 28, 2019 to commemorate the Urs of Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam. 12 Politics More plane troubles for the PM, replacement sent to fly NATO delegation home Rabi uth Thani 9, 1441H Dec 6, 2019
OTTAWA -- The plane that flew Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to NATO — a replacement to begin with — has engine troubles and another aircraft has been sent to London to bring the delegation back. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the CC-150 Polaris plane “became unserviceable” after it arrived in London because a problem with one of the engines was discovered during a post-flight inspection by the Royal Canadian Air Force. A different CC-150 Polaris from the fleet has been sent to bring the delegation back to Canada later today. This backup to the backup was in Italy with Gov. Gen. Julie Payette for her visit to commemorate the Italian campaign during the Second World War and it has been diverted to transport the prime minister. Despite this, the PMO says that Payette will still be home in time to read the throne speech happening in Ottawa tomorrow to open the new Parliament. Trudeau and the group that travelled with
him to the summit on Monday made the trek there on another replacement plane because the prime minister’s main plane had been grounded until August 2020, after a collision at CFB Trenton left it with a crushed nose and engine damage in October. According to the Canadian Armed Forces, the main plane — a CC-150 Polaris used to transport the prime minister to international events — was being towed at the military airbase in Trenton, Ont. on Oct. 18 when it sustained “significant structural damage.” The cost to repair the aging main plane, and now to fix the backup, remain unknown. “In the meantime, the RCAF has other aircraft that can be used for transport and are confident it can meet the needs of the government while the aircraft is being repaired,” reads the statement from the PMO. Plane troubles also dogged the Liberals during the fall federal election campaign. On the day Trudeau kicked off the election the
Air Transat plane chartered by the Liberal Party was taken out of commission when a bus carrying the travelling media drove under and scrapped up a wing. A replacement was found, but then later on in the race Trudeau was criticized for using two planes during the campaign, one for the leader, his entourage and the media, and another for cargo. As The Canadian Press has reported, during his first term the main prime minister’s plane also experienced problems. His arrival in India in 2018 was delayed due to a mechanical problem during a refuelling stop, and an incident with a flap required the jet to turn around shortly after taking off with Trudeau on board in 2016. The Department of National Defence is projecting to spend up to $249 million to extend the lifespan of the fleet beyond 2026, according to documents. There’s been some discussion about whether now is the time to look
But, Scheer promised, something new will come with the resumption of the House of Commons: an emboldened Opposition that won’t let do him whatever he wants. “In this minority Parliament, we are putting him on notice,” Scheer said. “We are not going to let them get away with anything.”Scheer accused Trudeau of dragging his feet on bringing back Parliament, saying he was doing it in part because he feared the force of his opponents. While the Conservatives may be styled “Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition,” Canadians should understand where their loyalty lies, Scheer said.“Our loyalty is not to the government, our loyalty is to the Canadian people,” he said. “And when the prime minister puts his agenda ahead of the good of all Canadians he will indeed find himself opposed.” However Scheer himself is facing questions of loyalty and opposition from within his own ranks. The failure of the Conservatives to capture a majority during the election has frustrated many within the party, who felt forming government ought to have been within their sights given the myriad scandals plaguing the Liberals.
Organized campaigns to unseat Scheer at April’s party convention, or force him to retire ahead of that, have been launched and both prominent Conservatives and grassroots members have spoken out against the need for Scheer to change or go. In recent weeks, he’s been on a “listening tour” of campaign managers, failed candidates and volunteers, where common themes have emerged: the party failed to put forward and communicate a convincing climate plan, and that Scheer’s socially conservative views were a liability. Michelle Rempel, a Calgary MP, who has been outspoken about the rights of LGBT Canadians, said the party has to stand up for those issues more forcefully. “I hope to work with our leader to find ways we can advocate for the community,” she said. Scheer has made some early changes, firingtwo members of his inner circle. He also appointed a former Liberal as his party’s deputy leader last week.
to be based on science and designed to keep average global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 C.The Liberals promised during the campaign that they’d set Canada on a path to have zero net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. The current official target is to reach 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, which would still mean emitting hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide and its equivalents. Singh said he also wants the Liberal government to drop its legal fight against a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal order for Ottawa to compensate First Nations children who were inappropriately placed in foster care. And he wants a firm commitment to universal pharmacare and greater investments in health care. The Liberals and the NDP both campaigned on promises to bring in some
form of universal pharmacare. Most of Canada’s premiers expressed hesitation about a national pharmacare program when they gathered in Mississauga, Ont., on Monday. They repeated their call for a 5.2 per cent increase in annual health-care transfer payments from the federal government, but several said now might not be the best time to create a national pharmacare program, as provinces need funding to deal with growing wait times and overcrowded hospitals. There are 24 NDP MPs, which means they have enough votes to keep the Liberal minority government in power. But Singh said if Trudeau’s goal is simply power, rather than meaningful progress, he can turn to the Conservatives, who have 121 MPs, or the Bloc Quebecois, who have 32 MPs, for support. “He can go to the Bloc
GATINEAU, Que. -- The federal Liberals will not make a decision about hiking the carbon price beyond $50 a tonne for at least another two years, Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says. Wilkinson said his first priority in the new Parliament will be figuring out how Canada is going to meet its target for cutting greenhouse gas emissions made four years ago as part of the Paris climate change agreement.” After that, he will map a way to fulfil the
Liberals’ election promise to exceed that goal. He intends to have a new target ready for the United Nations climate change conference in November 2020. Wilkinson said the forthcoming plan will lean heavily on developing clean technology to reduce the emissions from oil and gas production, and manufacturing industries. But at the moment, Wilkinson is signalling that hiking the carbon price won’t be part of the plan. That price, which is at $20 a tonne

Scheer warns Liberals his Tories are watching as Parliament prepares to return
OTTAWA -- Opposition Conservatives are looking ahead to the return of Parliament Thursday as an opportunity to change the channel after weeks of very public party in-fighting around the future of leader Andrew Scheer. In a public speech to Conservative MPs and senators Wednesday, Scheer covered much of the same ground he’s trod on for weeks following the October election: that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is responsible for dividing the country, weakening Canada’s reputation on the world stage and setting up dangerous conditions in the event of an economic downturn.
Toronto MP Leona Alleslev crossed the floor to the Tories last year, and Scheer said she serves as example -- and ambassador to -the people the party needs: suburban voters
around big cities like Toronto who used to support Liberals. Still, one of the most senior members of his caucus -- former Conservative cabinet minister Ed Fast -- also refused a spot on the Opposition front benches, saying Scheer deserved to be surrounded by those who fully supported him. Fast was Scheer’s environment critic prior to the election. Fast stopped short of discussing his own measure of support for Scheer, a position taken by many MPs who say the decision rests in the hands of the party’s membership come April. “Mr. Scheer got a mandate from supporters, volunteers, the members of our party,” said Quebec MP Gerard Deltell on Wednesday. “It is the members of the party that will decide what will happen.” B.C. MP Mark Strahl, who is counted among those in Scheer’s inner circle, told reporters Scheer can and will hang on. “We need to get back to doing the job that we were elected to do, which is to present a viable alternative,” he said. “The more that we can focus on that, the stronger our party will be.” Source: ctvnews.ca
Here’s the NDP’s priorities for the throne speech
OTTAWA -- NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his caucus is ready to work with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but he should not take their support for granted. “We are more than willing to work together, but we will not vote for something that doesn’t align with what Canadians need,” Singh said Wednesday. Singh said he is looking for a number of specific things in Thursday’s throne speech, including bolder targets for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions as way to fight climate change, and accountability measures to ensure those efforts stay on track. ”We know that governments set targets and then miss them,” Singh said. “That’s not good enough.” The New Democrats have not proposed specific targets for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, but Singh has said he wants them
or the Conservatives if he just wants to run the government and stay in power, but if he wants to do something real that is actually going to tackle the problems that people are worried about right now -- climate crisis, housing, health care -- we are there,” Singh said. “We can work on those things together.” Source: ctvnews.ca
Wilkinson says carbon price hikes won’t be decided until 2022
now, is to be reviewed after it hits $50 a tonne in 2022. Wilkinson said Wednesday that he is not going to “prejudge” the outcome of that review.“We committed to review carbon pricing as we approach 2022, we plan to do that for sure,” he said. “It’s part of the plan, but I would say to you carbon pricing is not the only tool in the tool box. We’re going to use a whole range of them to achieve this in a way that is acceptable and works for Canada.” Source: ctvnews.ca

Surrey Roads Take a Technology Leap with new Advanced Traveller Information System Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey announced Three overhead, full colour LED, Dynamic traffic signals throughout today the launch of its Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS), which will help motorists make more informed decisions to improve their commute, reduce the environmental impact of driving, and lessen driver frustration. “As we activate our Dynamic Messaging Signs, the City of Surrey is opening up even greater possibilities to make traffic safer, improve flow, and reduce environmental impact,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “Surrey has been recognized for being at the forefront of leading-edge, innovative communications technologies. The Advanced Traveller Information System that is being launched today is the latest example of how we are continuously improving our traffic information network in Surrey.”
Messaging Signs are situated to provide alternate adjacent route choices for City Centre-bound drivers arriving from Highway 1 in the north and Highway 99 in the south. The first is located westbound on 104 Avenue at 154A Street and provides route options via 100 Avenue, 104 Avenue and 108 Avenue. The second sign, at the 5500 block of King George Boulevard, displays options via 132 Street, 140 Street and King George Boulevard. The third, situated eastbound on the 152 Street off ramp from Highway 1, shares real-time travel to Surrey’s downtown via 100 Avenue, 104 Avenue and 108 Avenue. The signs display travel times derived from data collected and analyzed from fifty Bluetooth sensors installed last year at selected
the city’s northwest. The ATIS detects anonymized Bluetooth-enabled devices on the roads, encrypts the data and routes it to the Traffic Management Centre (TMC), where a computer tracks the speed and travel time of the detected devices as they move through the city. A comparison of real-time speeds to historical speeds alerts staff when road links are travelling slower than normal, and traffic signals are then adjusted and the public is alerted to changing traffic conditions. This new system is supported by TMC traffic engineers and technologists who actively manage more than 2,500 traffic devices
across approximately 316 square kilometres of city space. ATIS will fully integrate with the City’s other systems, including the exclusive wireless radio communications system, nearly 500 traffic cameras, and over 410 networked traffic signals to improve safety and travel times. Mendicino to oversee Liberal promises including growing immigration targets. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has named Marco Mendicino as Canada’s next Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. The 46 year old has an extensive background in law and worked for nearly 10 years as a

Mendicino will now be responsible for making the case for immigration policies promised by the Trudeau-led Liberal Party of Canada during the recent federal election. The Liberals won a minority government, meaning they will have to rely on opposition votes to implement their pledges to raise immigration levels, create a Municipal Nominee Program, waive citizenship fees and make the Atlantic Immigration Pilot a permanent program. 350,000 immigrants by 2021 During their four years in a majority government, the Liberals increased immigration levels from about 260,000 annually to a target of 330,800 in 2019. Those targets are set to increase by another 20,000 to 350,000 in 2021. All together this could mean over a
The Liberals also put greater emphasis on refugees during their last term. They increased refugee class intake to 15 per cent, and reduced the economic class intake to about 58 per cent. Family class immigration levels remained untouched. The Liberals have promised to make “modest and responsible” increases to immigration levels in the years to come. Free Canadian citizenship applications Currently, permanent residents must pay $530 to obtain citizenship, plus a $100 “right of citizenship fee.” The promise to waive the fees altogether is a part of a renewed effort to reform the Citizenship Act to make acquiring citizenship more accessible regardless of socioeconomic factors such as age and income. the Liberals promised to implement a Municipal Nominee Program. The program would open up a minimum of 5,000 new spaces for prospective immigrants and “allow local communities, chambers of commerce, and local labour councils to directly sponsor permanent immigrants.” Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) was created to curb the population decline in Canada’s four Maritime provinces. The AIPP allows employers in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to hire foreign nationals for a job they cannot fill locally.\ The pilot was extended an additional two years in May and is now slated to become a permanent instalment. Consultations to form a new government in Lebanon will formally begin on Monday, the presidency has announced, more than a month after a wave of protests led the prime minister, Saad Hariri, to resign. “The presidency has set Monday as the date for the parliamentary consultations” for the designation of a new prime minister, the presidency announced in a short statement on social media on Wednesday. Despite contin-

He and several key partners in the fractious outgoing governing coalition had apparently insisted on reaching a deal before announcing the start of formal talks with Lebanon’s parliamentary blocs. Hariri announced his resignation on October 29, nearly two weeks into an unprecedented nationwide protest movement that has been demanding an end to

Iran: Rouhani calls for release of ‘innocent, unarmed’ protesters President Hassan Rouhani calls for ‘clemency’ for unarmed demonstrators during Iran’s recent fuel price rise protests. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has called for the release of any unarmed and innocent people arrested during the protests against fuel price increases after two weeks of violent clashes. The unrest, which began on November 15 after the government abruptly raised fuel prices by as much as 300 percent, spread to more than 100 Iranian cities and towns and turned political as young and working-class protesters demanded the religious leaders step down. ”Religious and Islamic clemency should be shown and those innocent people who protested against petrol price hikes and
were not armed ... should be released,” Rouhani said in a televised speech on Wednesday. Iran’s religious rulers have blamed “thugs” linked to its opponents in exile and the country’s main foreign foes - the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia - for the deadly protests that paralysed the oil-rich nation. ”The aim of our enemies was to endanger the existence of the Islamic republic by igniting riots in Iran... But America and the Zionist regime [Israel] lack political wisdom about Iran and the Iranians,” said the chief commander of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, in another televised speech last week. Tehran has given no official death toll, but Amnesty International on Monday said
it documented the deaths of at least 208 protesters, making the disturbances the bloodiest since the 1979 uprising that swept the Shia leaders to power. Iran rejected the rights group’s claim, calling it “biased”. An Iranian legislator said last week that about 7,000 protesters had been arrested. The country’s judiciary, however, rejected the figures. Last week, the Iranian Ministry of Intelli-
Palestinian officials slam plan, calling it result of US decision to no longer consider settlements illegal. Israel’s defence minister has approved plans for the building of a new illegal settlement in the heart of the flashpoint city of Hebron, drawing sharp criticism from Palestinian officials. The defence ministry said on Sunday that Naftali Bennett had instructed departments responsible for the occupied West Bank “to notify the Hebron municipality of planning a new Jewish neighbourhood in the wholesale market complex”, according to local media reports. The market area is on Hebron’s once-bus-
tling Shuhada Street, the Old City’s main commercial artery. It has been shut down by the Israeli army since 1994, forcing many businesses to close. Palestinians, who have long demanded that it be reopened, have been banned from accessing the street. Hebron is holy to both Muslims and Jews and is a flashpoint for clashes between Palestinians and Israeli settlers, who are heavily guarded and usually protected by armed Israeli soldiers. On Saturday, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian teenager southwest of Hebron, with the army saying he was one of the three people throwing petrol bombs at
a military vehicle. The incident occurred near the entrance of a settlement, according to local media reports, where Palestinian medics were barred from entering. Hebron Mayor Taysir Abu Sneineh warned that the “dangerous” decision by the defence ministry would lead to escalations in the “entire region”, Wafa news agency said. “This decision is a meaningful step forward in strengthening the US-Sudan bilateral relationship, particularly as the civilian-led transitional government works to implement the vast reforms under the political agreement and constitutional declaration of August 17, 2019,” Pompeo said in a statement praising Hamdok. Washington and Khartoum had been at odds for decades. The US government added Sudan to its list of state sponsors of terrorism in 1993 over allegations that al-Bashir’s government was supporting “terrorist groups”, a designation that makes Sudan technically ineligible for debt relief and financing from
the IMF and World Bank. But last month, a senior State Department official said Washington may remove Sudan from the list and that the two countries no longer have an adversarial relationship. Congress needs to approve such a removal. Months of demonstrations over price hikes for fuel and bread and cash shortages led to an uprising against al-Bashir, who was toppled by the military in April. It did not specify if Doha had accepted the invitation, which comes amid signs of a thaw in tensions that have fractured the regional bloc. Since June 2017, GCC members Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, along with Egypt have imposed a land, air and sea blockade on Qatar over accusations of “supporting terrorism”, a charge repeatedly and vehemently rejected by Doha. However, the three Gulf blockading countries are currently participating in a
regional football tournament in Qatar, having announced their participation at the last minute. Saudi Arabia, which has also sealed its land border with Qatar, will play the hosts in the semi-finals on Thursday. There were also reports of Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani making an unannounced visit to the Saudi capital last month. The GCC is a bloc comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The 40th session of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit is scheduled to take place in the Saudi capital on December 10. “The Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, received a written message from ... With the Muslim Food bank’s first-ever concert to battle hunger,
By: Shatha Muhsen With the Muslim Food bank’s first-ever concert to battle hunger, the community witnessed the beginning of a new age for raising funds. Yahya Hawa and Ayub Salahudin entertained an audience of over 200 with nasheeds. MFBCS’s ever-growing programs to support the community would not be possible without the help of donors, the need for engaging the supporting community through entertainment was nothing but necessary. The success of the program guides thefoodbank into the future, and with the hopes of future events being joyful for the supporting donors. The efforts which the community goes through to support the Muslim Foodbank is not going unseen and solemn gratitude goes out towards each and every one of you who have been there for us. We are looking forward to seeing you in our future events such as the Annual Fundraiser and many more to come. Jazakallah and we hope you have a great holiday season. We would like to update the community on some of the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society expansion. In the last two years, MFBCS has undergone a series of expansions, including building a brand new warehouse, in the process of establishing a chapter in Toronto, working closely with a new division, the Muslim Care Center (MCC), and creating more innovative programming as to reach a wider variety of people in the community. Midway through 2018, MFBCS purchased a new warehouse space which they were able to design in a manner that best supported both Food Bank and ASPIRE related activities. The new warehouse is composed of two levels, the bottom level being the food bank, with MFBCS offices and a board room, and the top-level being a training centre with ASPIRE offices or counseling rooms. In addition to expanding our reach in the Lower Mainland of BC, in 2019, MFBCS has also begun small scale operations in Toronto. Specifically, MFBCS is in the process of planning the first Case Management Training sessions in Toronto in February of 2020. Backed with several years’ worth of experience and training materials, the MFBCS Vancouver staff is primed to offer guidance and training to its counterparts in Toronto,
before allowing them to take the reigns and offer these services to an entirely new population. Another means by which MFBCS has expanded this year is through its support of ongoing food distribution programs out of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, The Muslim Care Center (MCC), composed of a consortium of Muslim organizations, businesses and individuals, the MCC’s mission is to elevate both people’s physical and spiritual well-being. As such, in addition to food distribution, it hosts a number of activities related to mental wellbeing, including counselling, addiction services, and daily prayer services. MFBCS is one of the main contributing partners behind the MCC and has been supporting the program by providing accounting support, access to resources and overall general support. Finally, the last remaining way in which MFBCS has expanded this year is through the development of new programs; specifically the Calligraphy for Youth Program and the Senior Support Program. The former first ran for 6 weeks in the summer and taught youth in the community both the history and the practice of Arabic Calligraphy. The latter is a more ambitious project that aims to pair together elderly community members with volunteers. The goal of the program is to provide support to both the elderly and their families by having volunteers take on some of the responsibilities and day to day tasks that a family member cannot. Although still relatively new, the overwhelming response to the Senior Support Program indicates that it addresses a need that was heavily felt in the community.

Social Media and Teens: How Does Social Media Affect Teenagers’ Mental Health
Katie Hurley, LCSW The verdict is still out on whether social media is damaging to the mental health of teens. This is in part due to the lack of research. Some studies show that online connections with small groups of people can be beneficial to teens, while other research points to a rise in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. The other reason it’s difficult to get a good read on the issue is that social media is constantly changing and evolving. Plus, no longterm studies have been completed. So, we’re left making educated guesses based on current research. There’s just not enough data to back up the potential long-term pros and cons of living on “likes”. One study out of the University of Pittsburgh, for example, found a correlation between time spent
scrolling through social media apps and negative body image feedback. Those who had spent more time on social media had 2.2 times the risk of reporting eating and body image concerns, compared to their peers who spent less time on social media. The participants who spent the most time on social media had 2.6 times the risk. Results from a separate study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine showed that the more time young adults spent on social media, the more likely they were to have problems sleeping and report symptoms of depression. And another small study of teens ages 13-18 from the UCLA Brain Mapping Center found that receiving a high number of likes on photos showed increased activity in the reward center of the brain. Further, teens are influenced to
like photos, regardless of content, based on high numbers of likes. It feels good to be “liked” and herd mentality is big on social media. Like what others like and you’re in. There are some positive aspects to social media. It’s important to remember that teens are hardwired for socialization, and social media makes socializing easy and immediate. Teens who struggle with social skills, social anxiety, or who don’t have easy access to face-to-face socializing with other teens might benefit from connecting with other teens through social media. Teens in marginalized groups—including LGBTQ teens and teens struggling with mental health issues—can find support and friendship through use of social media. When teens connect with small groups of supportive teens via social media, those connections can be the difference between living in isolation and finding support. Read enough of the current research and you’ll find that the negatives tend to feel bigger than the positives. While teens can use social media to connect and create friendships with others, they also confront cyberbullying, trolls, toxic comparisons, sleep deprivation, and less frequent face-to-face interactions, to name a few.Too much time spent scrolling through social media can result in symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. Here’s how social media can be destructive: Focusing on likes: The need to gain “likes” on social media can cause teens to make choices they would otherwise not make, including altering their appearance, engaging in negative behaviors, and accepting risky social media challenges. Cyberbullying: Teens girls in particular are at risk of cyberbullying through use of social media, but teen boys are not immune. Cyberbullying is associated with depression, anxiety, and an elevated risk of suicidal thoughts. Though many teens know that their peers share only their highlight reels on social media, it’s very difficult to avoid making comparisons. Everything from physical appearance to life circumstances to perceived successes and failures are under a microscope on social media. Even with privacy settings in place, teens can collect thousands of friends through friends of friends on social media. The more people on the friend list, the more people have access to screenshot photos, Snaps, and updates and use them for other purposes. There is no privacy on social media. Social interaction skills require daily practice, even for teens. It’s difficult to build empathy and compassion (our best weapons in the war on bullying) when teens spend more time “engaging” online than they do in person. Human connection is a powerful tool and builds skills that last a lifetime. There’s a happy medium in here somewhere. The key to helping teens learn to balance social media with real life friendships is to keep the lines of communication open and keep talking. Honest communication shows your teen that you are there to support, not to judge or lecture. It’s also important to walk the walk. Disconnect on weekends and show your teen that there is a whole world out there that doesn’t require a handheld screen. She may miss her phone a lot less than she thinks she will and this is a very good lesson to learn.

Govt seeks opp support amid calls for ‘diplomatic emergency’ over Kashmir
* Qureshi says every positive suggestion by opposition will be entertained to highlight Kashmir issue * Ahsan Iqbal says Pakistan should quit OIC if it does not call a session on Kashmir
By:Ijaz Kakakhel
The opposition parties in National Assembly on Wednesday demanded that the government declare a ‘diplomatic emergency’ over Kashmir dispute, while Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi invited the opposition parties to come forward and give their input, assuring that every positive suggestion will be entertained by the government to highlight the Kashmir issue at the international level. Addressing the National Assembly session, Qureshi said the Lower House has unanimously passed a resolution condemning India’s illegal annexation of the occupied valley, and praised the opposition for supporting the government on the issue. He said the PTI-led government forcefully
raised Kashmir issue at all the international forums, adding that the grave human rights violation in the occupied valley has become an international issue. Talking about India’s illegal bifurcation of Kashmir, Qureshi said New Delhi is continuously violating the UN resolutions. He said Kashmir issue has been internationalised after 1965 due to effective and prompt diplomacy of the government, adding that the issue has been raised and discussed in US Congress, EU parliament, UNSC, OIC, and parliaments of various countries. Qureshi went on to say that human rights organisations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have also supported Pakistan’s stance of grave human rights violations in the occupied valley. “About 70 heads of states, governments, and foreign ministers of different countries were contacted to sensitise the world community to highlight the Kashmir issue,” he said. “We have tried to send the voice and concerns of the people of Pakistan to
Kashmiris across the Line of Control, living under constant siege for over 120 days and over 1100 protest demonstrations have been reported whenever Indian occupation forces relieved curfew in the valley,” he said. “India is afraid of the backlash of Kashmiris to its illegal acts of annexing Kashmir on 5 August this year,” he added. Qureshi also invited the opposition to come forward to give its input and assured that every positive suggestion will be incorporated to highlight the Kashmir issue. Responding to PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal, Qureshi said that he shouldn’t call Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) a ‘dead horse’ as 57 countries are members of the body and Pakistan needs their votes. “We cannot offend our OIC friends,” he said. “You (Ahsan Iqbal) are not serving Pakistan and Kashmir by calling the OIC a dead horse,” he added. The sitting began with opposition members criticising the government’s ‘failure’ to highlight the Kashmir crisis, with both PPP and PML-N advising the government to declare a ‘diplomatic emergency’. PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal criticized the OIC’s what he called tepid response to the Kashmir crisis and said if the body does not agree to call a session on the issue, Pakistan should ‘immediately announce exit from it’. “We don’t need a dead forum that cannot even call a session on Kashmir,” he declared, and appealed to the foreign minister to visit at least 10 to 15 countries over the next 15 days and inform foreign governments about the situation in the occupied valley. Meanwhile, the National Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution to denounce
desecration of Holy Quran in Norway and also witnessed introduction of four government bills which were referred to the relevant committees for further consideration. The bills introduced in the House included Port Qasim Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2019; the Surveying and Mapping (Amendment) Bill, 2019; the Gwadar Port Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and the Privatization Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2019. The House passed a motion to elect Standing Committee on Power and authorised the Speaker to nominate its members. Another motion was also adopted by the House for constituting a parliamentary committee to protect rights of persons with disabilities and suggest legislative measures and amendments in the existing laws. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Azam Khan Swat laid the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Authority Ordinance, 2019, which was also forwarded to the relevant committee for further deliberations. as vocational boarding schools that allow “trainees” to graduate into gainful employment. In remarks Tuesday on the House floor, Rep. Christopher H. Smith (R-N.J.), a Uighur Act co-sponsor, said the Xinjiang detention program was “on a scale not seen since the Holocaust.” “This Congress wants to hold the Chinese government and Chinese companies accountable for crimes against humanity and the cruelty they inflicted,” Smith said. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in remarks supporting the bill that “the human dignity and human rights of the Uighur community are under threat from Beijing — Beijing’s barbarous actions, which are an outrage to the collective conscience of the world.” In October, the Trump administration placed visa restrictions on Chinese officials involved in the Xinjiang crackdown and barred the export of U.S. products to
Chinese technology companies involved in the region’s surveillance. Chinese diplomats and state media have doubled down on their defense of the Xinjiang policy with increasingly pitched rhetoric. The Global Times on Tuesday launched a rare and personal attack against an American anthropologist at the University of Washington and an independent German researcher, accusing them of working undercover on behalf of a U.S. intelligence agency to “slander and smear China.” Earlier this week, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that it would sanction several U.S.-based nonprofit and human rights organizations, including the National Endowment for Democracy and Human Rights Watch, but it did not provide details about what the sanctions would entail. China also said it would deny the U.S. Navy port visits to Hong Kong. Source: www.washingtonpost.com
China slams House’s passage of bill backing sanctions on Beijing over mass detention of Muslims
BEIJING — The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill late Tuesday that would impose sanctions on senior Chinese officials involved in the country’s mass detention of its Muslim Uighur minority, setting up another clash between Washington and Beijing at a time of broadening disputes between the two powers. The Uighur Act cleared the House by a vote of 407 to 1 a week after President Trump signed legislation that would impose sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials involved in human rights abuses in the protest-racked financial hub. Nury Turkel, chair of the Uighur Human Rights Project advocacy group in Washington, called the House passage “historic” and urged Congress to reconcile the two versions of the bill this month. “The scope and scale of the crisis in the Uighur region demands urgent action in Congress to send this bill to President Trump’s desk for his signature,” he said. The Senate version passed in September. China has angrily denounced both the Uighur and Hong Kong measures and said Wednesday that it would respond to the House’s passage of the Uighur Act. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged the United States to “immediately correct its mistake, stop the above bill on Xinjiang from becoming law, and stop using Xinjiang as a way to interfere in China’s domestic affairs.” The state-run Global Times tabloid suggested in an article that China could take aim at American companies doing business in China by placing them on an “unreliable
entities” list. Hu Xijin, the paper’s editor, tweeted that Xinjiang officials would shrug off the sanctions because they have no connections with the United States. “But U.S. politicians with stakes in China should be careful,” he said. The back-to-back U.S. measures targeting the Chinese government’s handling of Hong Kong and Xinjiang — two of the most politically sensitive regions in the eyes of Communist Party leaders — have added strain to the bilateral relationship at a time when the two sides are struggling to reach a trade deal. Trump acknowledged this week that the new Hong Kong legislation complicates trade talks. He played down the possibility of an imminent deal a day later, telling reporters during a visit to London that “I like the idea” of waiting until after the November 2020 election to reach an accord even though the Chinese “want to make a deal now.” The Uighur Act would probably target officials including Xinjiang’s regional Communist Party chief, Chen Quanguo, a member of the ruling party’s elite 25-person Politburo whom researchers consider responsible for overseeing the detention and surveillance program in Xinjiang. The three-year crackdown has led to the detention of at least 1 million Uighurs in reeducation camps, designed to mold them into secular, patriotic citizens who embrace Chinese customs and language. The program has been extensively documented in media reports, satellite imagery and public and leaked Chinese government documents. Chinese officials initially denied the camps’ existence but now describe them

At the End of The Day
A
By Asma Shums ll of us try to have a good life, we work hard and try to keep that momentum going as much as we can. We try our best to be successful; we get a good education, we prioritize our career, get a good paying job and make sure we limit our distractions to focus on the important things in life. But we forget to ask ourselves: what actually matters at the end of the day? All of us need a home to come back to at the end of the day surrounded by our families. All, if not most, should be excited to return home to our families and loved ones. Whether we are parents or children, we should want to return home to see our family. However, most of us treat our home like a guest house. We come home because we have to and our belongings are stored there. Family is like a string of pearls. Each glis-
Women married to ISIL fighters share accounts of being made to watch executions and strap explosives to other women. In the second of our five-part series exploring what life was like for women living under ISIL (ISIS), three women who were married to ISIL fighters share their stories. Anonymous - Syria: ‘This is your life now, you’re ISIL whether you like it or not’ ISIL was like a disease, an epidemic like the flu that infects everyone. Unfortunately, it infected my home. It infiltrated it through my husband. He was an open-minded person. He loved life. He was liberal, sensible and well-educated. He was respected by all. Gradually, he became more religious, more devout. And then I noticed that his ideas had changed. I do not know how to explain it. It happened gradually. Suddenly one day, he went to visit his parents in the countryside. The next day, his mother called me and said: “He’s gone, that’s all. Forget about him. You no longer have a husband.” After 40 days, I was staying with relatives and had not returned home. One of them told me that he had just walked past my house and had seen my husband there. I went back home happy and hugged him. But it was not him any more. It was his face but it was not the same person. It was as if he was a stranger. He told me: “I made my decision and you have to accept it. This is your life now, you’re ISIL whether you like it or not.” ISIL was like a disease, an epidemic like the flu that infects everyone. Unfortunately, it
tening white beautiful is attached to another by a delicate piece of thread and together a priceless and intricate piece of art is created resulting in a unique masterpiece. The thread that holds it all together is the parents to each member. Our parents cultivate the bond between our aunts and uncles, our grandparents, and force us to spend time with our cousins. It is the hardest, lowestpaying, challenging, and thankless job in the entire construction of an intricate and beautiful tree of relationships. Now that we know our responsibility on fostering relations in our family, it is important to understand the qualities needed to be successful in this prestigious role. We need to be strong mentally first and foremost as our children look up to us to guide them in their lives and build a foundation to reflect during difficult and blissful moments in life. A day has 24 hours for everyone; whether a CEO of a multi-billion dollar company or a farmer in a improvised nation. We have to utilize this time to align with our goals and happiness as that is the true definition of success for an individual, not monetary
value or material goods or a glamorous position at work. What does this mean? We have to prioritize. It includes giving attention to our home, our family members, our careers, and most importantly to ourselves. It includes delegating tasks, taking difficult decision, and sometimes being the bad person so things get done and our family members learn responsibility to be a successful independent individual. We need to find the strength and personal reflection to understand in these situations to not be hard on ourselves to make the required difficult decisions. This situation also teaches us to appreciate the work other members our family is playing. Let your mother have a day off and not criticize her, let your children have a ‘fun’ day where they don’t get scolded for doing something they aren’t allowed to, or shouldering the responsibilities so your spouse can have a fun-filled evening with their friends. More importantly, it’s important to have an identity after marriage or having children. It is important to reflect on the things that make you happy and the boundaries that
are important to you. It’s more important to not develop our sense of self on our husband or wife and manifest our personality on the traits of another. What makes you, YOU, is what is your personal brand. If you are certain of who you are, its important to hold on to that because no one else will. You are your own best friend. info@asmashums@gmail.com
Two things that help you immensely to succeed in life is the way you “manage’ when you have nothing and the way you “behave” when you have everything.
Women under ISIL: The wives children. They’re my children.” It was risky for me because of ISIL and the Iraqi army. My husband’s behaviour towards me changed, but for the better. He thought that on any given day he would get killed. So every time he went to the market he would buy all kinds of things for us. Anything I wanted, he would buy it for me. His mother even told him that he was spending too much on the house. He said: “No, as long as I’m still alive I’m going to buy everything they want. Expensive or not, I’m going to buy it. I don’t want to deprive them of anything while I’m still alive.” I still loved him. I liked his long hair, it looked good on him. I liked his long beard, infected my home. It infiltrated it through too. I wish every single woman would marry so my husband. she can see that a husband can be as preANONYMOUS, SYRIA cious as her soul. When I learned of his Noor Mohammed - Iraq: death, I fainted. ‘I still loved him’
I am Noor Mohammed and I was born in 1991. My husband was a simple soldier. When ISIL arrived, he went to join them. He forbade me from seeing my family. To be honest, I could not leave him. He was my other half. Besides, I had two children and was six months pregnant with my third. I do not know why he joined them, but it was his friends who convinced him. I often tried to change his mind but I did not succeed. When we were in Mosul, I threatened to leave him and go home to my parents. He said: “Go ahead, but you’re not taking the
Khadija - Raqqa, Syria: ‘They stoned her until she died’
One of the last things they did was to ask women to wear suicide belts. And a lot of women volunteered ... Four women from Belgium volunteered. We helped them prepare. KHADIJA, SYRIA When he took me home, his wife was not there. On our first night, he explained to me what he liked and what I should do to him. He was violent. They were all violent. ISIL members are known for that. The women have no say; we cannot question their decisions. Of course, I was sad. How could I feel otherwise? If someone hits you on your wedding night you are going to feel humiliated and sad. He was often violent and not just with me. He hit his other wife in front of me, and he hit me in front of her. And we did not dare say anything. My husband often took us to see ISIL’s punishments. Once, we were in the car and he told us: “I’ll show you something.” We went to two things. The first was a sodomy case. They tied the accused to a chair and pushed him off the top of the tallest building. The second case was a woman. I saw it because my husband made me. They took this woman to al-Naim roundabout and stoned her to death. They stoned her until she died. Blood came out of her eyes and from all over her face. Every time she tried to get up they threw stones at her. One of the last things they did was to ask women to wear suicide belts. And a lot of women volunteered. My husband asked me and his other wife but we were terrified. So he was afraid that we would cause the operation to fail. Four women from Belgium volunteered. We helped them prepare. We had learned from watching others. There are specific areas to place the explosives. And it can only be done by women, so we did it. The most important thing to show is that men should not be violent with women. Violence against women must stop. We have to have gender equality. And, above all else, we must have peace. These accounts were gathered for the documentary ‘Women of ISIL’ by filmmaker Thomas Dandois. They have been edited for clarity and brevity.
I am Khadija. I am 33 and I was married to a member of ISIL. He was from Belgium. I met my husband when he came to ask my brothers for my hand. He already had two wives. One of them had stayed in Belgium because she did not want to come to Syria with him. My family was in favour of my marriage for financial and religious reasons. But when I saw him, I refused. He had a long beard, long hair. They forced me to marry him. Source: aljazeera.com

University of Calgary study links knee damage to osteoarthritis By: MICHAEL KING GLOBAL NEWS A new University of Calgary study has linked a common sports injury with osteoarthritis. The two-year study by the Faculty of Kinesiology focused on torn menisci — an injury that plagues many athletes. The Arthritis Alliance of Canada estimates osteoarthritis will cost Canadians $550 billion in health care costs over the next 30 years, affecting more than 4.4 million Canadians. By using a custom-built, $1.5-million microscope, researchers studied what
impact removing the damaged ligament has on the joint. Dr. Walter Herzog — a professor at the Faculty of Kinesiology — said doctors have known for years that removing the meniscus could cause issues down the road but that this study shines a light on how the damage is done. “Taking out the meniscus on its own was associated with an enormous amount of cell death,” Herzog said. “We could see the cells dying as the experiment was going on.”The study points to cell death as being the reason for knee deterioration
and an increased risk of osteoarthritis. Dr. Ziad Abusara co-published the study and said the rate of cell death during the hours following physical activity was staggering. “It was surprising how quickly the cells died when the meniscus was removed,” Abusara said. “Half of the cells which make and maintain the components of the knee cartilage were dead within four hours.” Abusara said the next step is to find out why the cells die so quickly, with the ultimate goal of preventing or even reversing the damage.
The Surprising Lesson I Learned By Cutting Coffee for 2 Weeks
I
’m going to be completely honest with you. Getting up in the morning involves snoozing my alarm several times, staring at the ceiling for a while and when I’m finally ready to brave the task of getting up, tripping over my slippers on the way. It’s not that I’m a night owl—I just need a little bit of a boost to be my most functional self. And usually that boost involves coffee. A lot of it. Sound like you, too? As any coffee addict’s been told one million times, starting the day off with caffeine has its downsides. Research shows that too much caffeine can lead to issues such as anxiety, insomnia, and increased blood pressure, among other things. And as you know, the highs tend to only last for a couple hours, leaving in their wake a horrible energy crash
that puts you out of commission to be super productive. So, for the sake of my health, I decided to test out what it would be like not to drink coffee for two weeks. It certainly wasn’t easy to do, but I did discover a valuable lesson that transformed my morning routine. I realized that sitting at my desk all day—or focusing for long periods of time, rather— requires long-standing brainpower, not just bursts of energy. Coffee was an excellent quick fix to get that first burst of energy, but to keep me going for longer, I really needed a routine that would get me further than that. With that in mind, I picked up a few new habits to see what would help. For starters, I began to meditate before work, and found that dedicating just 10 minutes to this
helped me transition between the fast asleep and wide awake stages—something I’d normally rely on coffee to do. I also created an agenda each day that held me accountable for reaching short-term goals, a responsibility I would’ve otherwise delegated to coffee. I allotted 45 minutes for major assignments, and left room inbetween for “me-time.” And I must say, a countdown to my next break was a much better incentive than another cup of coffee. The reality is, I didn’t need as much coffee (or coffee as much) as I thought I did. I just needed a more energizing routine. Now, I know it’s easier said than done to cut out coffee from your diet (I know I won’t always be able to do so). But regardless, it’s important to have a morning routine that works for you. Because if you can get ex-
cited and energized from making breakfast, or journaling, or doing a quick workout, or some other morning activity, you’ll be less likely to turn to caffeine for assistance. Source: www.themuse.com
the partnership moved past hundred and both men brought up their half-centuries radio commentary in Pakistan even mooted the possibility of a final day smash and grab. But hope to Pakistan is like locusts to agricultural farmers; they never comfortable allowing it to proliferate. The extermination began when Masood danced down to Lyon and, failing to get to the pitch of the delivery, spooned the simplest chance to mid-off. Shafiq, meanwhile, has mastered the art of scoring pretty but ultimately meaningless runs; he’s made a successful career out of it. He ensured there would be no departure from that script, and for good measure even ensured he’d get out in the most Shafiq way possible, flicking a catch to leg slip off Lyon. That fielder had been exclusively placed for that shot and one who was rather hard to miss. But even so, Australia had themselves done little to suggest they could blow the side away, given the two wickets had almost been gifted to them. So when Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed began to scramble together another partnership and the lead whittled down to double figures, Australia might have pondered having a target to chase. However, talk of that was still much too premature, especially as Lyon continued to plug away, bowling better than he’s ever done against Pakistan. When some extra bounce rapped Ahmed on the gloves and Marnus Labuschagne - finally - held on to
one at short leg, the Australian kitman could have probably put his feet up. The finish, there onwards, was at least entertainingly Pakistani. Yasir was trapped in front, so plumb that even if they were playing with just middle stump, it still wouldn’t be worth a review. Yasir, however, had a century under his belt and felt it was worth reviewing, if only to spend a few extra moments out in the middle. Later, when Rizwan tried to farm the strike and ensure they got through to the dinner break without any further damage, Shaheen Afridi decided to lash out at Lyon, skying the ball instead and giving the offspinner his five-fer. The best bit of comedy was still to follow. Muhammad Musa drove one to mid-on and, for some reason, Mohammad Abbas believed it to be a cue for a single. By the time he would realise it was anything but, Pat Cummins was already taking aim. And just like Pat Cummins so often does, he hit the stumps. In Pakistan, however, the joke is unlikely to be much appreciated. While Australia steel themselves for a series against New Zealand likely to test them more than this one has, Pakistan will have to regroup quickly ahead of a two-match home series against Sri Lanka. What might have otherwise been a celebration of cricket coming home has become very serious business. Source: Cricinfo
Lyon takes five to secure back-to-back innings victories for Australia
There was resistance, as there had been before, but it came when the game was so far beyond saving it seemed futile. Pakistan went right through to the final session before Australia finally wore them down and succumbed to another convincing innings defeat. A few positives aside, this really has been a bleak series for the visitors. Nathan Lyon enjoyed a bit of personal glory, completing his first five-wicket haul against Pakistan. It will do his confidence much good, given the offspinner’s rather ordinary numbers against this particular opposition, and in a contest where every one of Australia’s bowlers enjoyed great success, they couldn’t have hoped for a better launch pad to the three-match series against New Zealand later this month. Shan Masood and Asad Shafiq began the day simply hoping to take the Test as deep as was possible, and the early signs weren’t ter-
rible. In the day time the pitch flattened out and once the batsmen got themselves in the runs even began to flow. Once again, however, it highlighted the struggles of Pakistan in the evening session, which had yesterday seen three of their top-order batsmen off before the innings properly got going. It was a similar pattern as the first innings, where the night session saw Pakistan lose more than half their side before the Yasir Shah and Babar Azam rearguard. Masood, in particular, combined patience with belligerence early on, consecutive boundaries off Micthell Starc demonstrating the intent he harboured. He used his feet against Lyon to deposit him over long-on, trying to work himself back to form after at testing series. Shafiq looked almost completely untroubled, and in those moments, there might even have been hope Pakistan would make Australia bat once more. When

You never thought to yourself, “What are the relative merits of learning baseball versus football?” You just ran around the playground and played baseball and football. You built sand castles and played tag and asked silly questions and looked for bugs and dug up grass and pretended you were a sewer monster. Nobody told you to do it, you just did it. You were led merely by your curiosity and excitement. And the beautiful thing was, if you hated baseball, you just stopped playing it. There was no guilt involved. There was no arguing or debate. You either liked it or you didn’t. And if you loved looking for bugs, you just did that. There was no second-level analysis of, “Well, is looking for bugs really what I should be doing with my time as a child? Nobody else wants to look for bugs, does that mean there’s something wrong with me? How will looking for bugs affect my future prospects?” There was no bullshit. If you liked something, you just did it. “HOW DO I FIND MY PASSION?” Today, I received approximately the 11,504th email this year from a person telling me that they don’t know what to do with their life. And like all of the others, this person asked me if I had any ideas of what they could do, where they could start, where to “find their passion.” And of course, I didn’t respond. Why? Because I have no clue. If you don’t have any idea what to do with yourself, what makes you think some jackass with a website would? I’m a writer, not a fortune teller. But more importantly, what I want to say to these people is this: that’s the whole point — “not knowing” is the whole point. Life is all about not knowing, and then doing something anyway. All of life is like this. All of it. And it’s not going to get any easier just because you found out you love your job cleaning septic tanks or you scored a dream gig writing indie movies. The common complaint among a lot of these people is that they need to ‘find their passion.’ I call bullshit. You already found your passion, you’re just ignoring it. Seriously, you’re awake 16 hours a day, what the purpose do you do with your time? You’re doing something, obviously. You’re talking about something. There’s some topic or activity or idea that dominates a
significant amount of your free time, your conversations, your web browsing, and it dominates them without you consciously pursuing it or looking for it. It’s right there in front of you, you’re just avoiding it. For whatever reason, you’re avoiding it. You’re telling yourself, “Oh well, yeah, I love comic books but that doesn’t count. You can’t make money with comic books.” Have you even tried? The problem is not a lack of passion for something. The problem is productivity. The problem is perception. The problem is acceptance. The problem is the, “Oh, well that’s just not a realistic option,” or “Mom and Dad would kill me if I tried to do that, they say I should be a doctor” or “That’s crazy, you can’t buy a BMW with the money you make doing that.”The problem isn’t passion. It’s never passion. It’s priorities. And even then, who says you need to make money doing what you love? Since when does everyone feel entitled to love every second of their job? Really, what is so wrong with working an OK normal job with some cool people you like, and then pursuing your passion in your free time on the side? Has the world turned upside-down or is this not suddenly a novel idea to people? Look, here’s another slap in the face for you: every job sucks sometimes. There’s no such thing as some passionate activity that you will never get tired of, never get stressed over, never complain about. It doesn’t exist. I am living my dream job (which happened by accident, by the way. I never in a million
years planned on this happening; like a kid on a playground I just went and tried it), and I still hate about 30% of it. Some days more. Again, that’s just life. The issue here is, once again, expectations. If you think you’re supposed to be working 70-hour work weeks and sleeping in your office like Steve Jobs and loving every second of it, you’ve been watching too many shitty movies. Life doesn’t work like that. It’s just unrealistic. There’s a thing most of us need called balance. I have a friend who, for the last three years, has been trying to build an online business selling whatever. It hasn’t been working. And by not working, I mean he’s not even launching anything. Despite years of “work” and saying he’s going to do this or that, nothing actually ever gets done. What does get done is when one of his former co-workers comes to him with a design job to create a logo or design some promotional material for an event. Holy shit, he’s all over that like flies on fresh cow shit. And he does a great job! He stays up to 4:00 AM losing himself working on it and loving every second of it. But then two days later it’s back to, “Man, I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do.” I meet so many people like him. He doesn’t need to find his passion. His passion already found him. He’s just ignoring it. He just refuses to believe it’s viable. He is just afraid of giving it an honest-to-god try. It’s like a nerdy kid walking onto a playground and saying, “Well, bugs are really cool, but NFL players make more money, so I should force myself to play football every
day,” and then coming home and complaining that he doesn’t like recess. And that’s bullshit. Everybody likes recess. The problem is that he’s arbitrarily choosing to limit himself based on some bullshitty ideas he got into his head about success and what he’s supposed to do. Another email I get all the time is from people wanting advice on how to become a writer. And my answer is the same: I have no stupid idea. As a kid, I would write short stories in my room for fun. As a teenager, I would write music reviews and essays about bands I loved and then show them to nobody. Once the internet came around, I spent hours upon hours on forums writing multi-page posts about inane topics – everything from guitar pickups to the causes of the Iraq War. I never considered writing as a potential career. I never even considered it a hobby or passion. To me, the things I wrote about were my passion: music, politics, philosophy. Writing was just something I did because I felt like it. And when I had to go looking for a career I could fall in love with, I didn’t have to look far. In fact, I didn’t have to look at all. It chose me, in a way. It was already there. Already something I was doing every day, since I was a kid, without even thinking about it. Because here’s another point that might make a few people salty: If you have to look for what you’re passionate about, then you’re probably not passionate about it at all. If you’re passionate about something, it will already feel like such an ingrained part of your life that you will have to be reminded by people that it’s not normal, that other people aren’t like that. It didn’t occur to me that writing 2,000 word posts on forums was something nobody else considered fun. It never occurred to my friend that designing a logo is something that most people don’t find easy or fun. To him, it’s so natural that he can’t even imagine it being otherwise. And that’s why it’s probably what he really should be doing. A child does not walk onto a playground and say to herself, “How do I find fun?” She just goes and has fun. If you have to look for what you enjoy in life, then you’re not going to enjoy anything. And the real truth is that you already enjoy something. You already enjoy many things. You’re just choosing to ignore them. Source: https://markmanson.net/

Overwhelming Success of Book Launch and Film Screening
On November 24th an exciting and unique book launch and film-screening event took place at the impressive Performance Hall in the Richmond Cultural Centre in front of a capacity mainstream audience. It was the first time that an Islamic/Pakistani Art Work book launch and screening of docufilms of a Canadian of Pakistan origin took place at a renowned public setting in British Columbia. Following the success of Farooq Rai’s Peace & Harmony art exhibitions across the Lower Mainland in 2018, a book The Journey Continues...(Art related) was published in 2019. An accompanying video based on the book was showcased during this event along with the docufilm, The Luminary. During his opening remarks Shaun Dacey, Director of the Richmond Art Gallery, stated that he had the pleasure to work closely with Rai and found him to be a humble, compassionate and sincere person. In his remarks, Rai made three points. Firstly, he conveyed the greetings of Assalmu Alikum- Peace be Upon You. Secondly, he recognized and paid respect to indigenous people, on whose traditional territories we live and work. He stated that we are all here as immigrants and we should not forget this important factor. Finally, he thanked the City of Richmond and the Richmond Art Gallery for hosting such a wonderful event promoting intercultural relations and har-
mony in the Canadian mainstream. The honour of conducting the graceful book launching ceremony was given to three youth artists. This was a unique feature since book launching is typically done for promotional purposes. However, Rai’s books and extensive art works are not for sale and are being donated for good causes. City of Richmond Councillor Chak Au, Richmond Tennis Club’s Board representative Ann Nykforuk, Dacey, and Rukhsana Rai accompanied the youth. The docufilm The Luminary was shown for the first time in British Colombia. It highlights Rai’s remarkable accomplishments and contribution to Canadian Society. The following quote was displayed in the film: Here is a story of a boy who survived the ravages of Partition and eventually rose to prominence in an adopted country where he served ministers, premiers, prime minsters and most importantly, society itself! Along the way you established many firsts for Canadians of Pakistan origin and repeatedly demonstrated what can be accomplished with hard work, dedication and a passion for public service. Thank you Farooq for sharing the inspiring story of your journey with me and others. And, thank you Farooq for all you’ve done along the way to make this province and country a better place for all! The audience applauded warmly at the conclusion of the moving docufilm. The accompanying video of the book was shown next and was extremely well received by the enthusiastic crowd who clapped during some inspiring messages and paintings. Rai thanked Karl Maier, a creative and kind gentleman who produced the video and assisted in the book preparation. Rai was appointed as the first Assistant Deputy Minister and Head of the Ministry responsible for Multiculturalism and Immigration in 1994. Also a writer and advocate in the community, he is recognized for his
dedicated volunteer work and efforts in pro moting harmonious inter cultural relations. His unique collage artwork also depicts his cultural and literary heritage with a message of peace and harmony. Several organizations, youth, and media were recognised during the course of the event. The three young artists were given the opportunity to showcase their artwork, which was much appreciated by the audience. The Richmond Tennis Club was recognized for contributing to the health and cultural life of Richmond. Rai applauded the efforts of all community media outlets who are playing an important role in promoting harmonious inter cultural relations while preserving their own cultural heritage. Two prominent Pakistani community media personal were presented
with special commemorative works of art in recognition of their significant contribution. Nasser Pirzada (Print Media), Editor of The Miracle, which is the first Pakistani newspaper in British Columbia, was recognised for his contribution. Rai presented Pirzada with the Three Commemorative Cards piece especially made for this occasion. The Miracle’s coverage of Rai’s past events are highlighted in the book and video. Naveed Waraich (Social Media), Host and Producer of a popular television program was presented with the Commemorative Poster made by the Richmond Art Gallery for the World Festival Richmond Exhibition. Rai acknowledged that Waraich was the first community leader who interviewed him after the publishing of his first book several years ago.
Media Personalities, Naseer, Intikhab, Naveed ( *I have only 6 Facebook ‘friends’ apart from the family)
Thanks everyone, when we were planning the event format, I specifically requested to recognize the youth and media. The Director of the Richmond Art Gallery who was the MC of the program kindly concurred with my foresight. I like to share with you some background info for your particular interest since I also have experience in media work during my extensive government career. - “ The Maple Morning, A sequel “ is one of the most significant mainstream media exposure of Canadians of Pakistani origin’s contribution in Canada. The renowned Producer and Videographer spend the day at our home shooting the BC part. - “ The Luminary “ documentary was made using the extensive footage of my interview. I wrote the script for this documentary. -I have been working hard to preserve our identity and heritage in BC. I wan to improve our image and share positive aspects of Pakistan. I want to counter racism and Islamophobia by promoting inter cultural harmonious relations. With such objectives in mind I went about ‘doing my things’ . - We set up a ‘studio’ in our home for several months where we meticulously photographed the selected 100 art work paintings ( see some photos ). When a book is published or a film is screened then some times there is a video made to show the background work of how it was accomplished. We kept photos of this process and may compile a documented profile latter on. The limited edition book was published at a cost of $ 250 per book. The book and documentaries turn out to be very time consuming
and an expensive proposition. -The Book was compiled after great team work. It was the idea of the younger generation to come up with an enticing social media docufilm with English translation for wider circulation. The subsequent video was directed by me and produced by a media company. I choose the music and formulated the script. It is about 50 minutes video which we had to condense considerably for the showing at the event. -Early this year the family travelled to three continents. Wirth Allah’s blessings performed Umrah, visited our daughter in Africa and had a special book launch and film screen at the renowned Dabistan e Iqbal, ( see their Facebook ) Lahore Pakistan by Mian Iqbal Salahuddin the grandson of Allama Iqbal. We have ties with this family and I really appreciate the work of Mian Yousaf Salahuddin the older brother of Mian Iqbal who organize the music show Virsa: Heritage Revived which is produced from his Mughal-style Haveli’s sehan. (see our family photo from this historic venue ). I am very fond of music and cohosted with
Rafiq the first music program in BC. -Dabistan e Iqbal made a special documentary of the book launch ceremony which will be shown in BC. It is humbling experience to see a renowned scholar Dr. Tanoli and the grandson of Allama Iqbal recognising my efforts and contribution. Incidentally CG Tariq has seen it and appreciated it. I would like to show you the preview if you are interested. I have few other projects in mind and time permitting will like to pursue. I want to do a docufilm regarding the first mosque in BC.
I have some rare material in this regard. If any one wish to collaborate I will be interested in this worthy cause . I also want to write an article about the Pakistani Music History in BC and have drafted the outline etc. We must preserve our history in BC and share our contribution for many good reasons. I appreciate and recognize the work of all Pakistani media folks and I wish them continues success. Regards and best wishes Farooq
