Former military dictator Musharraf handed death sentence in high treason case ‘No one has immunity’: Musharraf’s actions in

2007 lie at the centre of the treason case against the 76-year-old former ruler. On November 3, the military ruler imposed a “state of emergency”, suspended the constitution and detained senior political leaders and judges. The crisis was precipitated in March 2007 by Musharraf’s attempt to remove then-Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, a move the Supreme Court later deemed illegal.

Musharraf’s conviction

HEN a former military ruler is convicted and handed the death sentence in a country which has been under dictatorships for the better part of its existence, it is no less than history being made. This is the first time in Pakistan’s history that a former military chief has been declared guilty of high treason for suspending the country’s Constitution. The verdict of a special court against former president Pervez Musharraf is a landmark development in many ways. It has challenged the military’s predominance and demonstrates the growing assertiveness of the judiciary. The death sentence may not be implemented but the court ruling carries farreaching political implications. The verdict sends a strong message to potential adventurists. Musharraf ’s treason trial had become an explosive political issue and had also been a cause of tension between the military and the government of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The military was surely not happy with its former chief being put in the dock on treason charges, and predictably his conviction has provoked a robust reaction from the military leadership that had rejected the court order. The military leadership has come out strongly in support of its former chief.

The sentence might not be implemented but the court ruling has far-reaching

political implications.

Many Pakistani political leaders have faced treason charges, but this is the first time that a former head of state has been convicted under Article 6 of the Constitution. The case had dragged on for more than five years with the bench changing several times. Musharraf was indicted in 2014 for imposing a state of emergency on Nov 3, 2007. There had been strong apprehension that the trial would never reach its conclusion because of reported resistance from the military. Despite repeated summons, Musharraf failed to appear before the court. He has been out of the country for the past several years and is hospitalised for serious health problems. He left the country in March 2016. The court declared him an absconder. It was evident that the PTI government had not been interested in pursuing the treason case. In a dramatic move last month, it pulled out its team of prosecutors and asked the court to halt the trial, saying the case against the former military leader was weak. The court verdict has worsened the government’s predicament. It remains to be seen whether it challenges Musharraf ’s conviction in the Supreme Court. Musharraf is required to be present in the country to file an appeal against his conviction but his return is improbable. Gen Musharraf took power on Oct 12, 1999, in a coup that ousted Nawaz Sharif ’s government. He stepped down as president in August 2008 under the threat of impeachment by the elected civilian government installed after the general elections that year. Interestingly, the treason case was filed more than five years after Musharraf ’s exit that came reportedly after

a deal brokered by the US guaranteeing indemnity to the former president. In a cable sent to Washington and leaked by WikiLeaks, the then American ambassador Anne Patterson reported that Asif Zardari had told her that he was committed to giving indemnity to Musharraf. The ambassador stressed that only the promise of indemnity had persuaded Musharraf to step down as president. The PPP government that came to power after the 2008 elections took oath from Musharraf who was still the president. But the situation changed after the return to power of Nawaz Sharif as prime minister. For him, it seemed to be an opportunity to settle scores with a man who not only deposed him but also put him on trial for sedition. There’s certainly a revenge aspect to the decision to initiate the treason trial, though the government maintained that it only complied with the Supreme Court ruling. Interestingly, the former military ruler was tried not for his ‘original sin’ of staging a coup against an elected government, but for imposing emergency and holding the Constitution in abeyance in 2007. The main argument for not charging Musharraf over the coup was that the Supreme Court and parliament indemnified his action. Many legal experts question whether the 2007 action alone provided sufficient grounds for his conviction under Article 6, ignoring the original takeover. Facing mass protests against his government, Musharraf on Nov 3 suspended the Constitution and declared a state of emergency in what analysts called the second coup. Most superior court judges, including the chief justice, were de-

tained. The action also brought an end to his nine-year rule. Musharraf has also been implicated in other cases including the Lal Masjid operation. A court has ordered the confiscation of all his properties and frozen his bank accounts. Apparently, the military leadership had distanced itself from Musharraf ’s trial, but that’s not really the case. Commenting on Musharraf ’s high treason trial in 2015, the then army chief Gen Raheel Sharif declared that the army would “preserve its own dignity and institutional pride”. It was evident that Musharraf had been protected by the military and it would not accept his conviction or what it described as “humiliation of the institution”. Significantly, the Musharraf verdict came a day after the Supreme Court released its full judgement in army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa’s extension case. The court has allowed the army chief to stay in office for six months pending regularising of his extension through an act of parliament. That keeps the situation uncertain. The ruling has left many questions unanswered. It has triggered a new debate whether it requires a constitutional amendment or just a change in rules. The decision has deepened the controversy over the extension of the army chief. The two court orders demonstrate an unprecedented assertion of authority by the country’s superior judiciary. That has led to a new conflict between the military and the judiciary that in turn could worsen the political crisis. It is not the end of the game yet. What happens next will be a serious test for the government as well as the system.

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, in a statement issued following the verdict in the high treason case against General retired Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday, said the “decision given by special court has been received with lot of pain and anguish by rank and file of Pakistan Armed Forces”. The statement by the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) comes after sources said a meeting of the top military leadership was held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi in the wake of the judgement. “An ex-Army Chief, Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee and President of Pakistan, who has served the country for over 40 years, fought wars for the defense of the country can surely never be a traitor,” said the ISPR statement. “The due legal process seems to have been ignored including constitution of special court, denial of fundamental right of self defence, undertaking individual specific proceedings and concluding the case in haste.” ”Armed Forces of Pakistan expect that justice will be dispensed in line with Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” he said. Govt urged to brief parliament on decision to skip Malaysia summit

ISLAMABAD: Criticising Prime Minister Imran Khan for cancelling his planned visit to Malaysia at the eleventh hour, the opposition has asked the government to brief parliament as to why Pakistan has decided to skip the Kuala Lumpur summit soon after the PM’s visit to Saudi Arabia. Terming it a sensitive issue”, PPP information secretary Dr Nafisa Shah, who is an outspoken member of the National Assembly, said in a statement on Wednesday that any decision made while keeping parliament in the dark would not be acceptable to the opposition. “The cancellation of the Malaysia visit of the ‘selected prime minister’ is a very serious

issue,” Dr Shah said and asked the government to bring the matter to parliament for a debate. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had announced on Tuesday that there would be no representation from Pakistan at the summit of some 20 Muslim countries which started in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. Pakistan was one of the first countries with which Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad shared his plans for holding the summit when he met PM Khan along with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York in September. ‘I have faith in Pakistan’s judiciary,’ says Musharraf after conviction in treason case

KARACHI: A day after the special court handed death sentence to retired Gen Pervez Musharraf for high treason, the former military dictator broke his silence on Wednesday evening and expressed his gratitude to the

armed forces and the people of Pakistan for remembering his services for the nation. In a video that showed him lying on a medical bed, Mr Musharraf also said that he would decide his future course of action after consulting his legal team. “I have faith in Pakistan’s judiciary that they will provide me justice and keep in view the supremacy of law,” he said in a feeble voice. However, he did not say whether he was considering returning home to challenge the special court’s verdict. Following the Tuesday verdict, the InterServices Public Relations issued a statement saying “The decision has been received with lot of pain and anguish by rank and file of Pakistan armed forces. An ex-army chief,

chairman joint chief of staff committee and President of Pakistan, who has served the country for over 40 years, fought wars for the defence of the country can surely never be a traitor”. Delegation of MQM-P meets Musharraf and assures him of full support Mr Musharraf said that he had heard the news of the verdict on television. He regretted that it was a decision in which neither the defendant nor his lawyer was allowed to contest the charges. MQM-P team meets Musharraf Earlier in the day, a delegation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan called on the former military dictator in Dubai and assured him of the party’s full support. The MQM-P, a former ally of Gen Mushar-

raf and the current partner of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government, had already termed the special court’s judgement “extremely regrettable” and wondered whether the decision was connected to his “ethnic identity” as no such action had been taken against other military dictators. A statement issued by the MQM-P on Wednesday said Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar, who is also deputy convener of the party’s coordination committee, along with coordination committee member and former MNA Hyder Abbas Rizvi called on Gen Musharraf in Dubai and inquired after his health. Mr Rizvi is currently residing in the United Arab Emirates. Source: Dawn.com

Boris Johnson is making good on Woman forced to remove hijab his Brexit plans in jail settles for US$120,000 about 11 months, for those counting.

The prime minister is moving ahead on his Brexit deal — and wants to get a trade deal with the EU by the end of 2020. Less than a week after winning a landslide victory in the United Kingdom’s general elections, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is laying out plans to fulfill his signature campaign promise: getting Brexit done. On Tuesday, the prime minister’s office said Parliament could hold its first vote on Johnson’s Brexit deal as early as this Friday. That would be the first step toward the UK leaving the European Union by the current deadline of January 31, 2020. This should surprise no one: Johnson campaigned on the promise to withdraw the UK from the EU early next year, and he now has a foolproof, 80-seat majority to get it done. But Johnson also signaled that he’s keeping another one of his riskier campaign promises: to not extend the Brexit transition period past 2020. The prime minister’s office indicated it will tweak the Brexit legislation — which puts Johnson’s Brexit deal into UK law — to eliminate the possibility of extending the transition period past 2020. That means the UK and the EU would have to strike a new trade deal between January 31 and before December 31, 2020. That’s

This may all sound like boring technical details, but it could be a pretty significant move. That’s because Johnson’s decision limits his options and puts the UK at risk of a new “cliff edge” — an economically perilous EU crash-out — this time in December 2020. Brexit doesn’t end on January 31 Brexit is really a two-part process. The first part is the divorce, and this is what consumed UK politics up until this point. Johnson’s Brexit deal will allow the UK to formally break up with the EU in January. Once that happens, the UK and EU will then enter a standstill period in which the UK will continue to follow the EU rules, but won’t have any decision-making power in the body. During this time, the UK and the EU expect to work out their permanent relationship — the second part of the process — trade being the major line item. That transition ends December 31, 2020, but the UK and the EU can renew it for up to two years, until 2022. This seems reasonable, given how knotty trade deals can be. Plus, Johnson wants to pursue a free-tradestyle deal, pulling the UK out of the EU’s economic institutions such as the single market and customs union. It’s also probably worth noting that this transition period was agreed to under May’s deal in the fall of 2018. It hasn’t adjusted to account for the UK’s year-long Brexit delay. So even the initial standstill period was never intended to be short.) But Johnson and his Conservative Party promised during the elections that they would not extend the transition past 2020. This hard deadline appeased the ardent Brexiteers in Johnson’s party, and most critically, Nigel Farage and his populist Brexit Party. Source: ctvnews.ca

MINNEAPOLIS -- A Minnesota Muslim woman has received US$120,000 to settle her lawsuit alleging she was forced to strip in jail and remove her hijab for a booking photo over a traffic offence, the woman and her attorneys said Tuesday. Aida Shyef Al-Kadi, of St. Louis Park, appeared with her attorneys at the Minneapolis headquarters of the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations to announce the settlement approved last month by U.S. District Judge John Tunheim. Al-Kadi, 57, said her treatment at the Ramsey County jail in August 2013 was “one of the most humiliating and harmful experiences”of her life. “I knew that I did not want any other Muslim woman to experience what I did,” she said. A judge had issued a warrant for AlKadi’s arrest after she missed a court hearing over a traffic offence while taking her daughter to the hospital, the Star Tribune reported. Under the settlement, the jail has put in place specific rules about how to accommodate inmates with religious headwear when taking booking photos. The county also agreed to destroy all hard copies and delete any electronic copies of Al-Kadi’s booking photo. The settlement does not require the county to admit wrongdoing. “We believe that this settlement agreement is fair and in the best interests of all of our residents. Ramsey County’s values hold that the rights, beliefs, well-being and dignity of all our residents are protected and honoured in all aspects of what we do. The practices outlined in the agreement to improve the booking process for those with religious head coverings better reflect these values,” Ramsey County Board Chair Jim McDonough said in a statement Tuesday. In her lawsuit, Al-Kadi’s argued that the county violated her constitutional rights and discriminated against her for her reli-

gious beliefs. Al-Kadi was born and raised in Ohio. She moved to Minnesota in 2005 so her daughter could receive specialized medical care. When Al-Kadi turned herself in, she said was told to remove her hijab and abaya, a long dress that covered her body, in front of male jailers. When she objected, she said she was removed from the area and taken to a holding cell, where she removed her hijab in front of a male jailer. She said she agreed to remove her headscarf for her booking photo after being told that the photo would never be released to the public. But months later, she found it on a thirdparty website that charges users to take down the photos. After taking the photo, officers gave her a bedsheet to use as a hijab. Al-Kadi eventually was told to remove her abaya and change into a jail uniform, while two female officers watched her. Ramsey County policy says that misdemeanour inmates such as AlKadi “will not be viewed without clothing,” according to court records. In 2014, the county revised its jail policies to include that inmates who wear hijabs will not be forced to remove them in front of men. A facility-approved hijab will be provided. Sheriff spokesman Roy Magnuson said bedsheets are no longer used. Source: ctvnews.ca

NEW DELHI -- India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the final appeal of one of the four men sentenced to death for the 2012 fatal gang rape of a woman on a moving bus in New Delhi, paving the way for the four to be hanged. The gruesome case made international headlines and exposed the scope of sexual violence against women in India, prompting lawmakers to stiffen penalties in rape cases. The victim, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student whom Indian media dubbed “Nirbhaya,” or “Fearless,” because Indian law prohibits rape victims from being identified, was heading home with a male friend from a movie theatre when six men lured them onto a bus. With no one else in sight, they beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her. The pair were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died two weeks later. The assailants were tried relatively quickly in a country where sexual assault cases often languish for years. Four defendants were sentenced to death. Another hanged himself in prison before his trial began, though his family insists he was killed. The sixth assailant was a minor at the time of the attack and was sentenced to three years in a reform home. One of those sentenced to death, Akshay Kumar Singh, filed his review petition earlier this month, after the other three had theirs rejected. The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected Singh’s appeal. His lawyer accused the judges of bowing to public pressure. India’s presi-

dent can still decide to grant Singh mercy, but that is not expected to happen. Outside court, the victim’s mother, Asha Devi, said she was happy with the ruling. “This is one step closer to justice,” she told reporters. Activists say new sentencing requirements haven’t deterred rape, the fourth-most common crime against women in India, according to government statistics. The last hanging in India was in 2013. The Supreme Court’s ruling comes amid a revived debate over sexual violence in India after several headline-grabbing cases in recent weeks. A woman in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was doused with gasoline and set on fire by five men, including two she had accused of gang rape and who were out on bail, on her way to attend a court hearing in her case. She died earlier this month at a hospital in New Delhi. The burned body of a 27-year-old veterinarian was found in late November near the city of Hyderabad in southern India. Police later fatally shot four men being held on suspicion of raping and killing the woman after investigators took them to the crime scene, drawing praise from people frustrated by the pace of the 2012 New Delhi case and condemnation from those who said it undermined the courts’ role. U.S. President Donald Trump im- India rejects final death sentence peached by House, 3rd in history appeal in 2012 gang rape WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday night, becoming only the third American chief executive to be formally charged under the Constitution’s ultimate remedy for high crimes and misdemeanours. The historic vote split along party lines, much the way it has divided the nation, over a charge that the 45th president abused the power of his office by enlisting a foreign government to investigate a political rival ahead of the 2020 election. The House then approved a second charge, that he obstructed Congress in its investigation. The articles of impeachment, the political equivalent of an indictment, now go to the Senate for trial. If Trump is acquitted by the Republican-led chamber, as expected, he still would have to run for reelection carrying the enduring stain of impeachment on his purposely disruptive presidency. ”The president is impeached,” Pelosi declared after the vote. She called it “great day for the Constitution of the United States, a sad one for America that the president’s reckless activities necessitated us having to introduce articles of impeachment.” Trump, who began Wednesday tweeting his anger at the proceedings, pumped his fist before an evening campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan, boasting of “tremendous support” in the Republican Party. “By the way,” he told the crowd, “it doesn’t feel like I’m being impeached.” The mood in the House chamber shifted throughout the day as the lawmakers pushed toward the vote. Democrats spun lofty speeches, framing impeachment as

what many said was their duty to protect the Constitution and uphold the nation’s system of checks and balances. Republicans mocked and jeered the proceedings, as t hey stood by their party’s leader, who has frequently tested the bounds of civic norms. The start of Trump’s Michigan rally was delayed as the voting was underway in Washington but once he took the stage he boasted of accomplishments and complained bitterly about his foes for two hours, defiant rather than contrite. He called Pelosi names and warned the impeachment would be politically disastrous for Democrats. He has called the whole affair a “witch hunt,” a “hoax” and a “sham,” and sometimes all three. Pelosi, once reluctant to lead Democrats into a partisan impeachment, gaveled both votes closed, seeing the effort to its House conclusion, even at risk to her majority and her speakership. House, unfolded in a caustic daylong session that showcased the nation’s divisions. Source: ctvnews.ca

f a i th On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said: Allah (glorified and exalted be He) said: I am so self-sufficient that I am in no need of having an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else’s sake as well as Mine will have that action renounced by Me to him whom he associated with Me. It was related by Muslim (also by Ibn Majah).

Jesus (PBUH) - The Spiritual Ascetic BY: Shaykh Sadullah Khan The Prophet’s saying “make zuhd from the dunya” [Ibn Majah] does not imply a disregard for this world, but rather an awareness of the transient nature of the worldly material things which are insignificant in relation to the permanence of what Allah promises ... “All that is with you is bound to come to an end, whereas that which is with God is everlasting. And most certainly shall We grant unto those who are patient in adversity their reward in accordance with the best that they ever did.” [Qur’an 16:96].

Zuhd in perspective

Z

uhd entails abandoning whatever of this world that does not bring about benefit in the Hereafter. Zuhd resides in the heart, and is practiced by ridding the heart of enslavement from the unwarranted desire and the over-attentiveness to things that are temporary. It entails your being more certain in what Allah has in store for you, than your are about what you have in your hand . As Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said; “When Allah desires goodness for his servant, He grants the capacity of abstention from materialism, a desire for the Hereafter and an insight into his own faults”.

Zuhd of ‘Isa/Jesus (pbuh)

‘Isa/Jesus (pbuh) was the embodiment of the true zaahid. Ka’b al-Ahbar said; Jesus the son of Mary would walk bare-footed, claiming nothing in the way of shelter, finery, wares, garments, or money; of the latter he would procure only enough to subsist for the day. Once the sun would set, he would align himself and pray until morning. He would restore sight to the blind, heal those afflicted with leprosy, and revive the dead all with the license of God. He was ascetic in matters of this world, vigorously exuberant towards the hereafter, ever-vigilant in his devotions to God. He was an itinerant who wandered the earth.....It was then that

God raised him up to the heavens. The Messiah (pbuh) said: “Asceticism / Abstention from materialism revolves around three days; Yesterday, which has passed and from it you should seek admonition / learn a lesson; Today, in which you should increase your preparation; Tomorrow of which you know not what is holds. [Musnad Ahmed] The Messiah (pbuh) said: “O Children of Israel! I have been positioned on earth with a particular status, and there is neither pompousness nor arrogance. Do you know where my residence really is?” They said, “ Where is your residence, O Spirit of Allah.” The Messiah replied, “My home is any place of worship, my perfume is water,

hunger is the flavoring of my food, my feet are my transport, my lamp at the night is the moon, my blanket in the winter is (the rising of the sun) east of the earth, my food is basic, my fruit and flowers are whatever grows from the earth, my garment is wool, my motto is fear of Allah and I accompany the sick and the poor. I sleep while I have nothing and I wake up while I have nothing, and yet there is no one on earth wealthier than I.” [Bihaar al-Anwaar] Taking a Collective Lesson from the Messiah (pbuh) Muslims and Christians do have differing perspectives on Jesus’ life and teachings, but his spiritual legacy, as a righteous and principled guide, his mission as a Prince of Peace offers an alternative opportunity for people of faith to recognize their shared religious heritage. Christians and Muslims would do well to reflect on the verse in the Quran reaffirming Allah’s eternal message of spiritual unity: “Say: ‘We believe in God and the revelation given to us and to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and message given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and it is unto Him that we surrender ourselves.’” [Quran 2:136] SOURCE:islamicity.org/

Peace, patience, and tolerance: The guide to a good Muslim

I

t’s not a secret that in the current context we live in, Islam has a bad rep, and so do many Muslims. Islam in today’s context is often associated with violence, oppression, intolerance, and general backward characteristics. If you were to ask some people who never studied Islam properly what they thought Islam taught it’s followers, then it would also go along the lines of what we have just mentioned. They would probably think or believe that Islam teaches it’s followers to be all those things, to be violence and oppressive towards nonMuslims, and to show a lack of tolerance. The truth however is much different, when studying Islam one finds that the good Muslim per Islamic teachings, is a Muslim possessing traits of being peaceful, patient, tolerant, and loving. All these aspects com-

bined make good character, which also a central tenant to being a good Muslim, the good Muslim is the one with good character, and good character encompasses all goodness, and obviously the opposite of good character is bad character, which encompasses all the negative and bad, such as being intolerant, oppressive, and violent. Now when Muslims say things like this, Islamophobes who have to make a living from demonising both Islam and Muslims will say “oh you’re just being a moderate Muslim” or “you’re just making these things up to conform with modern society and to present this lovy dovy image of Islam”. They will argue that this in fact is not the true Islam. Sadly for them, everything we have mentioned come straight from Islamic teachings, from the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) himself to be more specific. Having patience and tolerance for example are seen as among the best traits-characteristics-deeds of a Muslim according to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh): Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, which deed is best?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Patience and tolerance.” It was said, “Who among the believers has the

best faith?” The Prophet said, “Those with the best character.” Source: Musannaf ibn Abi Shayba 29806 According to these authentic sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), being tolerant, and patient with others are seen as the best deeds-actions from a Muslim. The Prophet is being directly asked the question of what the best deed is, and the Prophet is giving this direct answer. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) didn’t reply to the question by saying the best Muslim or the best deed is “to go kill the infidel”, “to go be oppressive and intolerant”, “to go force everyone to convert to Islam by the sword”. These were not the responses given by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), as much as Islamophobes who love us to believe. Spreading peace is also another trait of what makes a very good Muslim according to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh): Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of

Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “You will not enter Paradise until you believe and you will not believe until you love each other. Shall I show you something that, if you did, you would love each other? Spread peace between yourselves.” Source: Sahih Muslim 54 Here the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) links faith to loving each other, and the way this love is achieved is by spreading peace amongst each other. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not link faith to hate, and going on to spread chaos, anarchy, and terrorism. Islamophobes would obviously have us believe that, but again the reality is quite different. Notice we are not bringing these teachings from our own whims and desires, to put a spin on things on Islam, but rather we are directly quoting the actual sayings and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Trudeau’s top communications staffer Anti-racism and discrimination motions passed by Vancouver School Board leaving PMO OTTAWA -- OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s most senior communications staffer Kate Purchase is leaving the Prime Minister’s Office.Purchase, who was Trudeau’s executive director of communications and planning, will be taking a position with Microsoft as a senior director. In a tweet she said it was “bittersweet” to announce her departure. ”It’s been a wild and inspiring ride,” she said. Purchase has been Trudeau’s top communicator for years, from the lead up to and during the 2015 campaign and through the Liberal’s last mandate. During the fall federal election campaign she took on the title of chief content strategist for the national campaign. In an interview with CTV Chief News Anchor and Senior Editor Lisa LaFlamme on Monday, Trudeau cited communications

as an area in which his government could improve. “I think one of the things that we look at is, we were able to do an awful lot of really, really big things during our first four years. And we weren’t always able to get that message out,” Trudeau said. “We weren’t always able to have Canadians notice and understand the things we did, often because of things that we also did that took up more bandwidth.” The prime minister said in that interview that going forward his focus is on “how we can really dig in on the substance of what we’re doing and reassure Canadians.” Source: ctvnews.ca

Canada looking at military engineers, onthe-ground training for peacekeeping OTTAWA -- Canada is exploring the possible deployment of military engineers as the newly re-elected Liberal government takes a fresh look at ways to step up its support for United Nations peacekeeping, says Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. The government is also looking at having Canadian military trainers join peacekeepers from other nations in the field to help them better do their jobs. Both would be on top of commitments Canada has already made to the UN in recent years, though the minister cautioned talks between the two sides are still in the very early stages and no decisions have been made. ”This is not something we’re going to do by snapping a finger and getting it done,” Sajjan told The Canadian Press in a recent interview. “It’s very important that we take the time to get this right because when you do it, it can have a significant impact,” he said. “So these are the things that we’re working on.” Revelations about the possible new initiatives come after the Liberals promised in their platform during the fall federal election, without any details, that they would “move forward with new investments” to support peacekeeping if re-elected. That followed a similar promise by the Lib-

erals during the 2015 election to renew Canada’s role in peacekeeping, which later resulted in the 13-month deployment of a helicopter contingent to Mali for medical evacuations. Canada is currently providing the UN with the occasional use of a military plane to transport troops and equipment to and from Uganda, but a promised 200-member quick-reaction force has yet to become a reality. Despite these contributions, the Liberals have been criticized by some for not matching their rhetoric around peacekeeping with real engagement and support for the efforts. Others have questioned the benefit of peacekeeping to Canada. Source: ctvnews.ca

VANCOUVER -- Mounties are investigating a late night shooting in Surrey’s Guildford area that sent one man to hospital Monday night. At about 11 p.m., several police cruisers were seen at 144th Street and 104th Avenue and police said they received reports of shots fired near Hawthorne Park. While heading to the park, police got a report that a man was suffering from a gunshot wound at a nearby bus stop. The 25-year-old

was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not said if anyone was taken into custody, but they did say officers would still be in the area Tuesday to continue investigating. Mounties also said they’re not sure where the shooting took place, adding that “the victim in this incident has not been forthcoming with information to police.” The city has been rocked by several recent

VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver School Board voted in favour Monday night of two motions put forward following criticism for how a racist incident was handled. The board approved a suggestion to create a strategic plan with actions to address racism and discrimination in schools. Trustees suggested the plan include supports, and asked that students of colour be involved in its creation. They also approved a motion which the VSB described on Twitter as informing “how acts of discriminatory student conduct can be improved, including consideration of impacts on students and restorative justice.” The votes came about two weeks after parents shared stories of frustration with the board at a meeting. Those who were angry and emotional said they didn’t like how a hate-filled racist video made by a student was handled. The video, which was circulated on social media last year, was made by a boy who was at the time a student at Lord Byng Secondary School. He spoke about hating black people, and said he wanted to physically harm them. The boy also used the N-word multiple

times, a spokesperson for BC Community Alliance told CTV News earlier this month. Parents said they raised the issue with the school, but felt that they were dismissed. One mother said she was told the racism was “not even directed to us.” Citing privacy reasons, the school board wouldn’t comment on how the boy was disciplined, but parents said he was initially suspended for three days. Backlash from parents resulted in a longer suspension, and the boy eventually changed schools. But before that, the parents said, at least two other students left the school because of the trauma the situation caused. The school board’s chairperson told CTV News on Dec. 5 that hearing from those impacted was a reminder that work still needs to be done, and that there was a need for a stronger framework guiding staff on how to deal with similar incidents in the future. OTTAWA -- Federal Attorney General and Justice Minister David Lametti says the agreement between the Public Prosecution Service of Canada and SNC-Lavalin’s legal counsel to have the Quebec-based construction firm plead guilty to a single count of fraud over $5,000 and pay a $280-million fine was “made independently.” In a statement responding to the development in the case that was at the centre of a months-long scandal for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government and his predecessor Jody Wilson-Raybould, Lametti said the decision was reached as part of the Director of Public Prosecution’s office’s “responsibility to continually assess and determine the appropriate path for cases under their jurisdiction.” Wilson-Raybould, the former attorney general and justice minister, tweeted that “the justice system did its work” and that “accountability was achieved.” The now Independent MP who quit Trudeau’s cabinet and was then removed from the Liberal caucus earlier this year during the months-long affair had testified and presented various oral, written, and audio submissions in an effort to back up her allegations that she was improperly pressured by Trudeau officials to make a deal in the corruption and fraud case against SNC-Lavalin to ensure it could continue bidding on government contracts. “I have long believed in the essential neces-

sity of our judicial system operating as it should—based on the rule of law and prosecutorial independence, and without political interference or pressure,” Wilson-Raybould said Wednesday. “Ultimately, that system was able to do its work—as democracy and good governance requires—and an outcome was reached today. Accountability was achieved.” In an interview with The Canadian Press, Trudeau said that his government “could have, should have, would have” done things differently “had we known all sorts of different aspects,” of the political and legal saga. Wilson-Raybould said that 2019 began with questions about the rule of law in Canada, and that she is “glad to see it end with that principle being upheld.” “It is time to move forward,” she said. In a statement, Director of Public Prosecutions Kathleen Roussel thanked her prosecutorial team “for their dedicated work on this very challenging case, in the face of unprecedented public attention.”......... shootings, and multiple people were arrested on Saturday after an incident left a house in Whalley riddled with bullet holes. That incident came just days after a man was shot and killed in a residential area less than four kilometres away from Monday night’s reported shooting. One resident advocating for the city to keep the RCMP, rather than switching to a local police force, said Surrey is “getting into a culture of shootings.” “People believe that they need to shoot to

solve problems,” Ivan Scott said. However, Surrey city council passed its controversial 2020 budget Monday night, which includes $130 million earmarked for a transition away from the RCMP and to a municipal police force. Police have not made any connections to the three recent incidents. Anyone with information on Monday night’s incident is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

Former military dictator Musharraf handed death sentence in high treason case country. This [treason] is the case in which I Pakistan. the High Treason (Punishment) Act, 1973.

A special court in Islamabad on Tuesday found former military ruler retired Gen Pervez Musharraf guilty of high treason and handed him a death sentence under Article 6 of the Constitution. This is the first time in Pakistan’s history that a military chief has been declared guilty of high treason and handed a death sentence. The verdict was split 2-1. Article 6 of the Constitution says: “Any person who abrogates or subverts or suspends or hold in abeyance, or attempts or conspires to abrogate or subvert or suspend or hold in abeyance the Constitution by use of force or show force or by any other unconstitutional means shall be guilty of high treason.” The punishment for high treason is death or lifetime imprisonment, according to

The three-member bench of the special court — headed by Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth and comprising Justice Nazar Akbar of the Sindh High Court (SHC) and Justice Shahid Karim of the LHC — announced the verdict in the long-drawn high treason case against Musharraf after hearing final arguments today. A detailed verdict will be issued in 48 hours. The former military chief is currently in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. He was admitted to a hospital following deterioration of his health earlier this month. In a video statement from his hospital bed, he called the treason case “absolutely baseless”. “I have served my country for 10 years. I have fought for my

have not been heard and I have been victimised,” he had stated. His team can appeal today’s verdict in the Supreme Court. If the top court upholds the special court’s verdict, the president possesses the constitutional authority under Article 45 to pardon a death row defendant. The high treason trial of the former military dictator for imposing the state of emergency on Nov 3, 2007, had been pending since December 2013. Musharraf came to power after ousting then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a 1999 bloodless coup. In an infamous purge in 2007, Musharraf imposed a state of emergency and placed several key judges under house arrest in Islamabad and elsewhere in

He was booked in the treason case in December 2013, when the PML-N government under Nawaz returned to power. Musharraf was indicted on March 31, 2014, and the prosecution had tabled the entire evidence before the special court in September the same year. However, due to litigation at appellate forums, the trial of the former military dictator lingered on and he left Pakistan in March 2016 to seek medical treatment, promising to come back to his “beloved homeland” in a few weeks. Scheer should resign now, says Powers

Some Conservative-affiliated political strategists are applauding Andrew Scheer’s decision to step down as party leader, though one prominent voice says he shouldn’t stay on until his successor is chosen. Scheer announced his resignation last week, but received support from the Conservative caucus to stay on until his successor is chosen. Conservative strategist Tim Powers said

Scheer needs to act in the best interest of the party and step down immediately because he won’t be a credible messenger if the government falls in the next couple of months. “The narrative right now is that Andrew Scheer’s done what’s in the best interest of Andrew Scheer, and that’s the same criticism he levied at Justin Trudeau,” he said. The resignation came amid reports that Scheer was using party money to partially fund his kids’ private Catholic school education. Powers said the decision to use party funds shows an “appalling” lack of judgment from the Conservative leader, especially as Scheer has tried to paint himself as an average Canadian while taking aim at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals for being elitists.“Party members don’t donate money to have the leader’s kids go to private school when one of (the leaders) criticisms about Justin Trudeau is that he has state-

funded nannies,” Powers said. “(Scheer) isn’t as advertised either, as he argues Mr. Trudeau is.” The controversy is the latest for Scheer, who struggled to resonate with voters in the federal election campaign, which some blamed on his social Conservative values, including being anti-abortion and refusing to participate in pride parades. As well, it was reported that Scheer has a dual AmericanCanadian citizenship, even though he was publicly critical of former governor general Michaëlle Jean for holding both Canadian and French passports in a 2005. Former Tory staffer Yaroslav Baran said while Scheer’s resignation was necessary, there’s no immediate rush to replace him, especially as Parliament breaks for about a month over Christmas. He said the leadership race will be short this time around because minority Parliaments are unpredict-

able, whereas the last leadership race which saw Scheer elected ran for about a year and a half. As well, Baran said Scheer could be an effective opposition leader, pointing to his expertise as former House leader and speaker. “If there’s one thing (Scheer’s) particularly good at, it’s Parliament,” he said. Mike Van Soelen, a former Conservative staffer, said the party is focused on who’s running to be the next leader, not Scheer. He said people actively involved are excited about the different names that could be put forward and that the Conservative caucus is comfortable with Scheer acting as interim leader meanwhile. “I don’t really believe people are fussing about whether Andrew Scheer continues to be interim leader,” he said. “I can’t see how that would have any impact on ultimately what’s going to happen and where this party goes.” Source: ipolitics.ca

OTTAWA -- NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s office is apologizing after a staffer improperly used information from Election Canada’s voter list to send Christmas cards to people’s home addresses. “This was an unintentional thing that happened that should not have happened,” said Singh’s spokesperson George Soule. “We are sorry.” According to the NDP the staff member was putting together the list of recipients for holiday cards and in instances where a person’s name did not have an address listed, the employee had a colleague at the party headquarters pull the information from the party’s database which is primarily built on information received from Elections Canada. “That list has now been destroyed,” Soule said. It remains unclear how many people on the Christmas mailing list had their private

information accessed in this process, though it includes journalists who received these cards at their home addresses rather than to their offices, where it is common for MPs to send holiday cards to members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery. The NDP is now reviewing its mailing policies and reminding staff about accessing voter information, “to ensure that this does not happen again.” Soule said the party has been in contact with Elections Canada and the Commissioner of Canada Elections’ office, who is responsible for investigating potential violations and enforcing the Canada Elections Act. The law prohibits unauthorized use of personal information contained in the list of electors, though members of Parliament are permitted under certain parameters to use

the information to communicate with electors. Myriam Croussette, a spokesperson for the commissioner, told CTV News in a statement that “there is no prohibition against the use of the list of electors by registered parties to send greeting cards to electors, including outside an election period. Sending holiday greeting cards is a manner of communicating with electors. In fact, it is a common practice for parties to distribute such material.” Elections Canada information is provided under conditions that the authorized recipients take “reasonable precautions to protect the security and confidentiality of the personal information of Canadian Electors,” including restricting who has access to this information, and technical safeguards to minimize the risk of unauthorized access. Under the latest round of election law chang-

es, the Liberal government made it so political parties had to post their privacy policies online, but stopped short of subjecting parties to tougher privacy rules and oversight for the data they harvest from the electorate, despite calls to do so. Source: www.ctvnews.ca

money to cash-starved provinces -- hinting changes could be coming soon -- but left the details to be determined in 2020. Resource-rich provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan had put proposals on the table at Tuesday’s finance ministers meeting to expand the fiscal stabilization program that helps provinces and territories facing sudden holes in their budgets, such as those created OTTAWA -- Federal Finance Minister Bill by cratering oil prices. Morneau is ordering his officials to come up The program, which has not changed since with ways to change how Ottawa hands out 1995, provides help to provinces facing a

year-over-year decline in non-resource revenues, but the money available to eligible provinces is capped at just $60 per resident. The provinces called for changes to the program’s spending caps, lowering qualifying thresholds for different types of revenue, and retroactive payments for the last five years. Morneau said the Finance Department will analyze the various options and come back with suggestions for potential changes in January. But he also suggested that whatever his officials say will be a step in a longer path

towards updating the program.“We have multiple demands on the federal government as every one of the finance ministers behind me have as well. We talked about that reality today, we talked about the reality that we all face fiscal constraints,” Morneau said at a closing news conference.“That analysis will be done, it will be done in a fair way, and then we’ll have to take a close look at how we respond. That is the challenge that we all face in dealing with issues that are important to Canadians.” Source: www.ctvnews.ca

B.C. groups calls for voting rights for permanent residents

VANCOUVER -- A B.C. group that supports civil liberties and human rights has backed local politicians seeking voting rights for permanent residents who are not Canadian citizens. The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association says mayors and councillors at a convention in September endorsed a motion calling for updated provincial legislation to allow permanent residents to vote in local elections.A statement from the association calls the resolution from the Union of BC Municipalities

historic and an “extraordinary opportunity” to extend the vote to more B.C. residents. The association says it is working with the group #LostVotes to campaign for the change. Together, they have requested a meeting with Municipal Affairs Minister Selina Robinson to discuss next steps. The association says voter turnout is declining and access to citizenship is increasingly restrictive, so offering voting rights to permanent residents would be timely. Meghan McDermott, acting policy direc-

tor for the civil liberties association, says the B.C. government should take advantage of the municipal resolution because enfranchising immigrants would foster deeper civic engagement.“Given the barriers to accessing Canadian citizenship, including increasing costs and long government backlogs, we are very excited by the prospect of making local government elections more inclusive of all residents,” McDermott says. All sides frustrated with NDP rental housing performance VICTORIA (December 12, 2019) – BC Liberal Critic for Housing Todd Stone is once again raising concerns about the NDP’s rental housing plan after multiple reports have drawn attention to John Horgan and his government’s continued failure to deliver on their promises. “What we are now seeing is a widespread consensus from people on all sides of the political spectrum that this government is failing to live up to its promises on rental housing,” says Stone. “The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is now reporting that the government is missing the mark on af-

fordable housing to the tune of 10,000 rental homes per year. With every day that goes by, we are seeing the NDP fall further behind on housing.” Two recent reports — one from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and another from Partners for Rental Housing, a coalition of organizations supporting the growth of rental housing in B.C. — have stated that there is a growing deficit of rental units in B.C. and that the NDP plan is failing to achieve its objectives. It is evident that this government is breaking its promise to build 114,000 homes, delivering nowhere

near the needed units to keep up with population growth. “John Horgan and his government have repeatedly spoken about an urgent need to address the housing affordability crisis throughout B.C, and yet these new reports show that they are actually doing very little to improve the situation,” concludes Stone. “If John Horgan and the NDP truly want to take real action on affordability they need to get serious about increasing housing supply.” By: Carlie Pochynok Director of Communications

Erdogan urges resettling of 1 million refugees in northern Syria

Turkish president says formula needed to allow refugees to return on a voluntary basis but in ‘short period of time’. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for the resettlement of one million Syrian refugees in a “peace zone” in the northern part of their homeland - on a voluntary basis but in “a very short period of time”. “We need to find a formula to allow refugees ... who travelled to Turkey to be resettled in their motherland,” Erdogan, whose country hosts 3.7 million Syrian refugees, told the Global Forum on Refugees in Geneva on Tuesday. Housing and schools could be set up in the zone, where some 371,000 Syrian refugees have already returned since Turkish military operations to clear the area of “terrorist organisations”, he said, naming the armed group ISIL (ISIS) and the Syrian-Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Turkey-based PKK. In October, Turkey launched an offensive

against Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria, aiming to push back what it called “terrorist” elements from the border region east of the Euphrates River and establish a “safe zone” to resettle Syrian refugees it hosts. Erdogan said a lack of international assistance to Turkey to support millions of refugees on its soil pushed Ankara to launch the operation. “Nobody seems inclined to help us,” the Turkish president told global leaders gathered in Switzerland. “When we haven’t received the support we needed from the international community. We had to take care of our own self.”

Cross-border aid

On Tuesday, a new survey by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said the majority of refugees who fled Turkey’s military operation say they will not return to their country, and plan on settling in Iraq, citing ongoing fighting and uncertainty.

“Turkey’s military operation has scarred the lives of tens of thousands of Syrian families,” said NRC’s Middle East Regional Director Carsten Hansen in a statement. “The families tell us terrible stories of both the violence and the difficulties in trying to escape to safety. They need to be offered protection for the long term - whether in Iraq or in the areas they fled from.” Meanwhile, the United Nations chief urged the Security Council to authorise the delivery of critically needed humanitarian aid across borders and conflict lines in Syria for another year. “The United Nations does not have an alternative means of reaching people in need in the areas in which cross-border assistance is being provided,” Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a report to the council circulated on Monday. “Humanitarian assistance provided by United Nations agencies included food for an

average of 4.3 million people in need each month and more than 1.3 million health and medical treatments to people throughout the country,” Guterres noted in the report. “Cross-border assistance ... remained a vital part of the humanitarian response” to the more than 11 million people in need, he added.............. Syria, to cope with the extra needs created by the Turkish offensive in the area earlier this year. Source :aljazeera.com

Saad Hariri says will not be Lebanon PM again as tensions rise

Beirut, Lebanon - Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri has announced he would not seek the top post again, on the eve of twice-delayed talks to name a new prime minister that were expected to lead to his selection. Hariri’s announcement on Wednesday came 50 days after he resigned the post amid massive protests against the ruling elite that in recent days have escalated into clashes of an increasingly sectarian shade. Hariri said he would still participate in the process of selecting a new prime minister on Thursday, which is done through a series of meetings between MPs and President Michel Aoun, so that there were no further delays in the process. It remains unclear who will be named prime

minister, with Hariri’s Future Movement parliamentary bloc set to hold a meeting Thursday morning. Any prime minister must be approved by the majority of the 128-member legislature. Religious tensions riseHariri’s announcement comes as tensions between protesters, security forces and supporters of some establishment parties have started to rise, more than 60 days after the uprising began. Protesters have taken to the streets to call for the removal of the entire ruling class, who they accuse of causing an economic and financial crisis in the country. Their main demands, which include the formation of an independent government of specialists to lead the country out of the crisis, as well as early

International Migrant Day: 272 million migrants worldwide in 2019

The number of international migrants worldwide in 2019 saw a jump of of 51 million since the beginning of decade. The United Nations has marked International Migrants Day with an array of events and ceremonies aiming to highlight the contributions made and challenges faced by migrants and refugees. Wednesday’s commemoration - the 19th successive year the UN has celebrated the international day on December 18 - took place as the number of migrants and refugees worldwide continues to rise. The global migrant and refugee population reached an estimated 272 million this year, an increase of 51 million since the beginning of the decade, according to the UN. “Throughout human history, migration has been a courageous expression of the individual’s will to overcome adversity and to live a better life,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement. “Today, globalisation, together with advances in communications and transportation, has greatly increased the number of people, who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places,” he added, while

also calling for the “equal protection of all their human rights”. The UN Migration Agency (IOM) defines a “migrant as any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a State away from his/her habitual place of residence”. Migrants, according to the IOM, are classified as such “regardless of the person’s legal status; whether the movement is voluntary or involuntary; what the causes for the movement are; or what the length of the stay is”.Women make up 48 percent of the total number of migrants and refugees worldwide, according to the UN, while one out of every seven is younger than 20. ‘They risk a great deal’ To mark Wednesday’s event, the UN rolled out the #WeTogether hashtag on the world body’s social media channels in order to draw attention to testimonials of migrants and refugees in different parts of the world and the daily predicaments they face. Depression, loneliness, unemployment and fear of deportation are just a few of the many challenges such individuals often confront.

Surrey getting a new hospital, in Cloverdale

Premier John Horgan said the ‘brand new hospital’ will be built near Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Surrey will be getting a new hospital, in Cloverdale. Premier John Horgan and Health Minister Adrian Dix were in Cloverdale at the Museum of Surrey on Monday to announce the “brand new hospital” will be built beside Kwantlen Polytechnic University, which is located at 5500-180th Street. “It’s going to be a very fast-paced process,” Horgan said. “It’s a happy day.” Horgan said the province’s business plan may take 12 months to put together.“I think we’ll be through the business plan about this time next year in 2020 and then we’ll be going to tender,” Horgan said, adding shovels could break ground by the end of 2021. The new hospital will have an emergency department, inpatient beds, operating rooms, and laboratory, diagnostic and outpatient services. Dix told Black Press Media the challenge is to build a hospital that not only addresses the needs of residents, but also complements other hospitals in the area.“(Surrey Memorial) is full and everyone is stuck in the emergency room when they’re admitted – they can’t go into the wards – so we’re trying to alleviate some of that.”He also said the Cloverdale hospital will have more beds for elective surgeries. “It’s super-exciting for Cloverdale,” Dix said, “because you’re talking about a huge number of employees working here. You also have to think about how they’re going to get here, where they will live, how they’re going to deal with that.” Councillor Doug Elford said the announcement means big changes are coming to the area. “(Cloverdale’s) going to have doctors’ offices, support services, everything down

here is going to change,” he said Monday. Elford said traffic routes, including Highway 10, around the area may be changing too. “It’s all going to be based on the services around the hospital. Doctors will want to be close. It’s going to change the face of Cloverdale completely.”Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum told Black Press Media the announcement was great news for the residents of Surrey.“It’s been long overdue.” McCallum said the choice of Cloverdale is significant because it is well-positioned in an area of need, between both Langley Memorial and Peace Arch hospitals, and southeast of Surrey Memorial. McCallum said he plans to sit down with TransLink to push hard for better transportation to and from Cloverdale. In terms of the traffic congestion that a new hospital will bring, he said the City is going to embrace more technology to solve potential gridlock woes.“We’re going to be bringing some initiatives ahead on how to improve traffic across the city.” Dr. Victoria Lee, president and CEO of Fraser Health, said Surrey’s new hospital “allows us to re-envision how health services can meet the demands of this fastgrowing and diverse community with an expansion of services and the incorporation of virtual health-care services that go beyond the walls of the hospital.” Surrey is currently served by Surrey Memorial Hospital, opened in 1959, Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, opened in 1954, and the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre which was opened in Green Timbers in 2011. MLA Jinny Sims celebrates new playground for elementary students in Surrey SURREY – Surrey-Panorama MLA Jinny Sims attended Goldstone Park Elementary today to celebrate the grand opening of a new playground, one of three new playgrounds recently announced in Surrey. “Investments in playgrounds are investments in our children,” said Jinny Sims, MLA for Surrey-Panorama. “As a teacher, I am so proud that our government is creating spaces that will allow children in Surrey to play, learn and thrive.” The playground equipment program provides annual funding for playgrounds at public schools throughout the province. The program was launched in May 2018 by Minister of Education Rob Fleming to relieve the fundraising burdens for parents. Since then $10 million has been invested in 101 new playgrounds, contributing to the positive health and well-being of about 25,000 B.C. children. Made possible through the Playground Equipment Program (PEP), the funding for new or accessible playgrounds is part of the province’s commitment to up-

date aging infrastructure in B.C. schools to provide safe, enjoyable and accessible learning environments that set children up for success. In Surrey, three schools in 2019 have received a total of $285,000 in funding to build new or accessible playgrounds. Playgrounds help promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles, encourage children to share, develop conflict resolution skills and overcome challenges, and help students learn more effectively in the classroom. Previously, parents were expected to fundraise tens of thousands of dollars to replace and upgrade school playground equipment. The PEP helps ensure equality among children attending schools with different financial resources and fundraising capacity. Every school district in the province has now received at least one new playground. School districts in B.C. can apply for the funding by sending a list of priorities in their capital plan submissions in June of each year.

7 Common Winter Health Issues (And How To Combat Them)

I

t’s easy to love winter if you try. But it’s even easier to hate it, especially when you’re dealing with health issues. The season’s cold, dry weather can exacerbate everything from asthma to your chances of getting struck with the flu. Sure, you could escape to a hot and sunny destination when winter hits, but your best defence is knowing how to protect yourself when the temperatures plummet. Here are seven common winter health issues and how to combat them.

ful, but can even lead to infection if they’re not properly cared for. Our hands are often hit the hardest because we use them so often. They’re also most likely to be exposed to water and cold weather. When washing your hands, use a mild or moisturizing hand soap before drying them thoroughly. After each hand-washing, apply a good hand lotion that contains petroleum jelly to lock in moisture. It also helps to always wear gloves in cold weather or when using harsh cleaning products, and to moisturize your hands overnight. ainful Joints

are caused by various strains of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Most people know that once you’re infected with the virus, it never fully goes away, lying dormant in the nerve cells of your skin. Recurrence can happen any time your immune system is compromised, but they’re more likely to crop up in the winter. Cold sores often triggered by exposure to wind and sun, fatigue, and a decrease in your overall health. Therefore, when you combine cold, dry weather, a busy time like the holidays, and cold and flu season, it’s the perfect cold sore-inflicting storm. As with any viral infection, fluids, rest, and adequate nutrition are your best defence. But if you do get struck with one, try an over-the-counter drying agent like alcohol and a cool, damp cloth to promote healing. Regularly applying lip balm will also protect your lips from future damage. sthma

warns against stepping outside half-dressed for winter. He also advises dressing in layers, so that it’s easy to remove articles of clothing if you get too warm. If you do some form of physical activity while you’re all bundled up, you can overheat, causing your blood vessels to dilate and dramatically lowering your blood pressure. Combine one of these scenarios with overexertion, and you’ve got a serious mismatch between blood supply and demand, which is exactly what leads to a heart attack. It’s also why shovelling heavy, wet, or deep snowfalls can be extremely risky, so if you live in a particularly snowy part of the country, consider investing in a snowblower.

he Flu

According to the Arthritis Foundation, changes in temperature and barometric pressure can trigger joint pain, though researchers aren’t entirely sure why. What we do know, however, are ways to manage the pain when it hits. Dressing warmly during winter is extremely important if you suffer from joint pain. Always be sure to pay special attention to your head, hands, and feet, since the majority of body heat is lost from the extremities. It’s also important to keep up with regular exercise during the winter months, since a lack of physical activity can cause joints to stiffen.

Everyone knows that winter is flu season, but exactly why this virus tends to hit harder from November to March is often debated. Although some attribute the spread of the flu to lifestyle factors, like spending more time indoors and a lack of vitamin D, studies have shown that the virus is more stable when the air is cold and dry. Unlike cold viruses, flu viruses spread through the air, and according to this study, they’re able to stay in the air longer in winter-like conditions. Therefore, the flu is actually more likely to be transmitted on your way to-and-from the subway old Sores than once you’re inside it. But that doesn’t mean you should forfeit the outdoors altoAccording to the Mayo Clinic, cold sores gether. Instead, make sure you get enough rest and regular exercise, stay hydrated, and eat a nutritious and well-balanced diet. If you’re healthy enough to get it, the flu shot can also help. ry Skin

For some, dry skin is nothing a little moisturizer can’t fix. For others, however, it can lead to serious cracks that are not only pain-

Cold, dry air can trigger asthma attacks, which is why winter can be a brutal time if you have difficulty breathing. The dry, windy weather that many parts of the country experience in the winter can also stir up mold and pollen, which makes asthma sufferers even more prone to attacks. But staying indoors all winter isn’t good for anyone, and could even lead to other health issues on this list. When attempting to manage asthma symptoms, your best bet is to start by keeping a diary so that you understand exactly what type of weather conditions trigger your flare ups. Then, do your best to pay attention to weather reports, which can also include pollen and mould counts. eart Attacks

When your body is suddenly exposed to cold temperatures, your blood vessels constrict, which is why cardiologist Randall Zusman

Everyone feels a little sluggish when winter hits, but if you’re feeling moody and completely zapped of energy, it might be more than just the “winter blues.” You could have Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD, which strikes most people in the fall and continues throughout the winter months. Although it’s tough to pinpoint the exact cause, many health care providers believe it has something to do with the amount of sunlight we receive in the wintertime. Reduced sunlight can disrupt your internal clock and lead to a drop in chemicals such as serotonin and melatonin, both of which play a role in mood. That’s why the condition is sometimes treated with light therapy. Exercising regularly, getting outside, and finding a few things about winter to look forward to don’t hurt either. Attacking Lawyers, The Criminals Indeed

awyers have dispersed the morals of law and order when they attacked Punjab Institute of Cardiology. They did so keeping the domestic and international laws at the tip of the shoe; the so-called protectors of law might have forgotten the law. According to the Geneva Convention, the civilized world has agreed not to target hospitals and patients in the war. Article 14 of the Geneva Convention expressly states that hospitals will not be targeted in the event of war. It is agreed not to target patients and wounded in combat; according to international law, the younger and the elderly people need to be protected against the effects of combat. Article 16 of the Geneva Convention also speaks of special honors for the wounded, patients and pregnant women and to ensure their safety. The people of Pakistan are asking how are these lawmakers who are practicing law, morality, and civilization under their feet? In Lahore, lawyers attacked the city’s largest heart hospital; lawyers set up their court in the hospital; blacksmiths did not put their hands on their hearts or saw the condition of the patients, who broke everything. The lawyers broke the door of Punjab Institute

of Cardiology, broke the emergency ward’s glasses, seized the ICU, tortured doctors, para-medical staff, even parked vehicles in the hospital premises, Not only the hospital, but Jail Road was also made a battlefield by lawyers. “Unfortunately the lawyers forgot all of the learnt lessons of morality and did not even leave patients and common men who had to bear the brunt of war between doctors and lawyers. Four patients are officially dead; their attack cost huge financial loss to national exchequer, of at least Rs70 million. Considering all such facts, we can justifiably say that lawyers broke law like a criminal and now their legal fraternity is portraying them as savior of law. How sad!” The police came to the hospital about an hour after the attack, shelling tear gas at the hospital to disperse the lawyer. Lawyers also attacked law enforcement agencies, opened fire on the police van, as per details. It was a worst example of attacks on humanity. The patients and their kith and kin hid in the hospital washrooms to save their lives. Patients in the ward remained terrified throughout the incident, but the lawyers neither poured the heart nor had any mercy on

the patients. Even cars could not survive the wrath of the black coat? Lawyers also tortured journalists, hospital staff, doctors, wards, building, and unfortunately the crowd. Patients and their relatives continued to see the [in]justice of the black coat. The lawyers, who came to conquer the hospital, also turned Jail Road into the battlefield. The outbreak in the hospital also angered passersby. When Information Minister Punjab Fayyaz-ulHassan Chauhan arrived at the PIC, the lawyers also surrounded him, drew his hair and even dragged him. This all started with a video that when viral on social media two days ago, in which lawyers were ridiculed by doctors. To take revenge, the lawyers attacked PIC in Lahore and vandalized

everything there. Keeping all ins and outs into consideration, it is a matter of fact that the lawyers dispersed the morals of law and orders. These morals are taught to them in educational institutions for half a decade. Unfortunately they forgot all of them and did not even leave patients and common men who had to bear the brunt of war between doctors and lawyers. Four patients are officially dead; their attack cost huge financial loss to national exchequer, of at least Rs70 million. Considering all such facts, we can justifiably say that lawyers broke law like a criminal and now their legal fraternity is portraying them as savior of law. How sad! By: Hammad Hassan

How International Media Cover Kashmir

By: Shairee Malhotra

T

he lack of context in the international media’s reporting on Kashmir leads to a distorted picture of events. Four months after India’s abrogation of Article 370 in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, different reports on the situation have emerged from national and international media. Indian media have focused on the return of normalcy in the region with limited mention of the human rights violations taking place. International media have primarily looked at the human rights situation with little mention of the preexisting security situation. While there is no denying the occurrence of human rights violations in Kashmir, including a communications lockdown, a curfew and the detainment of political leaders, there has been a lack of discussion about the volatile, historical context in the state and the genuine reasons for India’s undeniably disturbing lockdown. Firstly, the crucial fact that Article 370 was a temporary provision granting special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir in the Indian Constitution has rarely found mention. India has not attempted to redraw any external boundaries. It has merely removed a complex and temporary article within its own constitution. Since August 5, India has stressed that its objective is to increase economic investment and development in Jammu and Kash-

mir and to integrate the state into the rest of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also promised that Jammu and Kashmir will not remain a union territory for long and its statehood will be restored at some point in the future. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s loose, absurd and disturbing talk of genocide in Kashmir, all whilst ironically refusing to recognize the state of Israel and fueling anti-Semitic sentiment, only brings serious dishonor to victims of genocide. The means can be rightfully questioned, but the move by India with its consistent language of development and progress at least appears well-intentioned.

A Diverse State

International media have not adequately explained the complex demography and diversity of the region. Muslim-majority Kashmir makes up only 15% of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, yet it comprises 53.9% of the population. The rest of the population is Hindu or Buddhist Ladakhi. It is hypocritical when global media outlets unabashedly, yet understandably, criticize alleged majoritarianism in Modi’s India but apply a majoritarian lens to view Jammu and Kashmir. As Atul Singh and Manu Sharma state in an article on Fair Observer, there is often little mention of the ethnic cleansing and mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits who, in the 1990s, were driven out of their homes in fear of persecution. This is

also the case with Buddhist Ladakhis who have faced systematic discrimination by Kashmiri Muslims. Hindus and Buddhist Ladakhis have thus celebrated the removal of Article 370, as well as the decision to divide the state into the two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh to allow for more effective administration and governance based on the individual needs of the territories. The removal of Article 370 also allows for the application of laws focused on the rights of minorities and women in Jammu and Kashmir. The region’s special status previously had allowed it to retain its own laws, many of which were discriminatory to women and minorities. For instance, if a woman from Jammu and Kashmir married a man from another state, she lost the right to own property there. The same did not apply to a male resident of the state who married someone from outside. A well-known case is that of Charu WaliKhanna, a Kashmiri Hindu lawyer, who was forced to flee the state and later wanted to purchase a home there but couldn’t because she was no longer a permanent resident and was married to a non-Kashmiri. Along with another Kashmiri woman who was a permanent resident but married to a non-resident, WaliKhanna filed petitions and challenged these laws in 2017 on the grounds that they were counter to India’s inheritance laws, which grant women equal rights.

Line of Control — the boundary separating Indian-controlled and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir — have fermented violence and destabilization, thereby emphasizing that cross-border terrorism has been central to Kashmir. Wells used language that big global media outlets like the BBC, Al Jazeera and The New York Times do not use in the Indian context. Historically, they often refrain from using the term “terrorists” when attacks occur in India, including Mumbai in 2008. Instead, these outlets describe attackers as “militants” and/or “fighters.”

Although the lockdown and curfew have been gradually lifted, it is primarily the internet clampdown that is still ongoing. This is due to the risk of Pakistani terrorist groups and Kashmiri militants weaponizing the internet to mobilize people and foment unrest. That the internet can be easily mobilized, manipulated and misused in the hands of the wrong people hardly needs a mention. In 2016, after militant Burhan Wani, commander of Hizb-ul Mujahideen, was killed in an encounter with Indian security forces, the exploitation of social media by online groups to capitalize on the situation led to one of the most violent periods in the history of Kashmir. As Parjanya Bhatt of the Observer Research Foundation writes, “[S] ocial media strategies in Kashmir have been morphed into a tradition where false narratives create heroes out of fallen terrorists The Lockdown of Kashmir With regard to the lockdown in Kashmir, and radicalise new recruits as icons.” a country like India with its largely benign State-Sponsored Terror and responsible image on the global stage But even as India attempts to normalwill hardly risk damaging it with unneces- ize the situation in Kashmir, militancy is a sary actions. Madam Noor Jehan’s 19th death anniversary observed

19

th death anniversary of famous singer ‘Melody Queen’ Noor Jehan was observed on Tuesday. Born as Allah Wasai on September 21, 1926 in Kasur, Noor Jehan started her musical career from Calcutta at the age of nine as a talented child star. She was renowned as one of the greatest and most influential singers of her time in South Asia and was given the honorific title of Malika-e-Tarannum. After partition, she moved from Bombay and

started her film career in Pakistan as actress, singer and the first female film director with film “Chann Wey” in 1951. If a Hebrew prophet spoke from his cradle, she crooned at birth. When Noor Jehan was born on September 21, 1926 to an impoverished musician Madad Ali in Kasur, her aunt rushed out to greet her father thus ‘Congratulations brother! This girl will change your fortune for she cries in tune.’ She recorded about 10,000 songs in various languages of India and Pakistan including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Sindhi. Noor Jehan ruled the film industry for more than 35 years and sung appropriately six thousand songs for Urdu, Punjabi and Sindhi films. Not only was she a celebrated playback singer but also a gifted ghazal singer. She also gave Pakistan a new genre, which later developed into a category we all know today as national anthems or milli naghme. The new beginning was made during the 1965 war, when Madam sang live on radio and TV some of the most gripping songs ever composed . In 1957, Noor Jahan was awarded the President Award for her acting and singing capabilities. On December 23, 2000, she died as a result of heart failure and was buried in Karachi. The nation had lost a legend.
