New video shows Ukrainian plane struck by two Iranian missiles
A new video has surfaced showing the moment two missiles hit a Ukrainian passenger plane over Iran’s capital, Tehran, killing all 176 passengers and crew on board. The New York Times said it had verified the security camera footage, which showed two missiles being fired 30 seconds apart, neither of which brought the plane down immediately. In the video, the aircraft is seen flying for several minutes, on fire, before crashing to the ground and exploding. The newspaper said the first strike disabled the plane’s transponder before it was hit by the second missile. For days, Tehran repeatedly denied reports that the Boeing 737-800 plane had been shot down. An earlier video released on Friday also showed that the plane was hit by a missile

URING a recruitment drive at a company I once worked with, my colleagues and I debated which questions are appropriate to ask in an interview. I was of the opinion that personal questions should be off limits. For example, a female candidate should not be asked whether she is married — a common practice in job interviews in Pakistan. If she is not, the assumption is that she will be soon and resign. If she is, the assumption is that she will soon have children and resign. Either way, she is unlikely to be hired. When I made my case, some of my male colleagues let out a sigh of exasperation: “everything is not a women’s rights issue”. This is now a common refrain among men who are inexplicably fatigued by the women’s rights movement. They believe that feminism has run its course and women are now equal — nay, dominant. In this post-truth world, men are now victims of misandry and gender discrimination. Look up online career discussion forums and men — not just here, but all over the world — are complaining that employers favour women. They are convinced that affirmative action has gone too far and mediocre women are being hired over more deserving men. It does not matter that the facts — gender ratios and pay gaps in most workplaces are abysmal — disprove this theory.
op i n i o n
The gender gap Nor does it occur to them that a woman’s skill and intellect may play a part when she is hired over a man. The myth that prevails among such men puts on stark display their unshakeable belief that they are better. This also manifests in conferences around Pakistan. Panels — or ‘manels’ — are heavily male-dominated. At a recent panel on an economic issue, the sole female panellist bravely began her talk by calling out the lack of female representation. Rather than being applauded for her courageous stand, she was severely denigrated.
The idea that feminism has overachieved is dangerous myth.
While some belittled her — “just another woman throwing a tantrum” — and others vehemently defended their right to hold a ‘manel’, they were all in denial of the systemic and structural issues that prevent women from participating. Some insisted that they could not find a woman with the relevant expertise (I could name several) while others said that if it had been on a subject relevant to women (as though the economy is irrelevant to 50 per cent of the population), they would have invited female panelists. But even this is not true. Even on panels on women’s issues, men are considered the authority and women are ex-

‘R. R. R.’! ‘RevengeRetaliationRetribution’! By: Gulshan Alani It seems humans are high wired with such human genome of revenge, retaliation and retribution that is proven two way street according to the humans who are use to living in the culture of violence and revenge: Influenced by their religious belief: believing an eye for an eye, life for life etc. Though, every ordinary person has this tendency of retaliation, that is apparent in the family feud, husband and wife dispute, and of course among different religious domains who are most violent either defending their religions or even their cults or most violent against other religions. Therefore, it is rather a universal trait of human nature that obviously misused by the bullies who bully other countries and kill like a terrorist. Sadly, today’s most advanced technology and higher education has become almost useless to change this human genome.
a
cluded, as evidenced by the initially proposed all-male panel on feminism at the Arts Council in Karachi. Another common refrain in the wake of the #MeToo movement is “we can’t say anything anymore” — as though women, high on their newfound power, are brazenly accusing men of sexual harassment without any grounds. This too is defeated by facts. First, the idea that women use false harassment claims as weapons against men belies reason. The weapon would be a rather impotent one, given that women rarely win such cases and often suffer serious personal, professional and reputational damage. Second, the idea that men are being silenced and cannot say anything lest they be accused of harassment is dubious. I have never found myself, while conversing with a man, uncertain about whether I am sexually harassing him. The lines are clear. If in doubt, assume there is something wrong with what you are about to say or do, and invest in sensitivity training. The reality is that, while there has been some progress, the status quo prevails, and women continue to lag behind. Profes sionally, women are suffering as workplace gender ratios are abysmal and get worse further up the ladder. Financially, they are disempowered with a big gender gap in financial inclu-
sion. Health and literacy outcomes are worse for women. Violence against women remains prevalent, and the abuse spewed against women on social media is a revealing indicator of our misogynist society. Unsurprisingly, Pakistan performs miserably in UN gender indices, and the World Economic Forum estimates that, based on current trends, it will take 257 years to close the global Economic Participation and Opportunity gender gap. There is a deep nostalgia among Pakistani men for the good old days when there were no repercussions, no women’s marches, few women in workplaces and even fewer in positions of power. The idea that feminism has overachieved and women now have too many rights is a dangerous myth which only helps strengthen this status quo. The Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik refers to such myths as “hierarchy stabilisers” diverting attention “from the fact that there is someone above you who is either exploiting you, or enjoying more unearned privileges than you”. The truth this myth obfuscates is that, with or without male allies, there are many causes to fight and a long, difficult road to travel before we can claim equality. Question to him: what evidence does he have that Major Soleimani was planning to attack Americans? We hope that Mike Pompeo the supporter of Trump’s terrorist act would also provide the evidence to prove their claim. Although, as usual many of us feel sorry for President Trump due to his old age, as he is going through the rough time of Impeachment and publicly mocked and humiliated by the Comedians that we strongly object. As such painful humiliation must be extremely painful for his beautiful wife. Evidently, in case of Iran’s retaliation, President Trump’s further warning to attack 52 Iranian sites out of revenge of 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago. As killing one innocent life is like killing the whole community and bear their sins. Unless, we study the Divine constitutional law that provides the full facts and remedy to deal with such situations we are going to fall in the deep dark Pit.Though, such Divine order is in Islamic Sharia/Divine law, and not in the book of U.S. President Trump, who is without the book of law. Housing society approved for PAF martyrs defrauded people of billions, NAB tells court
An accountability court on Wednesday extended the remand of two detained builders for 14 more days in connection with a probe into reports of fraud in the Fazaia Housing Scheme Karachi (FHSK). During the hearing today, the court was informed about how the land was acquired in the name of ‘shuhada (martyrs) and war heroes’, but hardly any units were allotted to the same. The investigation officer also highlighted how some Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officials had lured their own peers into purchasing housing units and made millions in the process. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB)

had arrested Tanveer Ahmed and Bilal Tanveer, said to be associated with Maxim Properties, for allegedly depriving the public of Rs18 billion through investments in the FHSK. On Wednesday, the investigating officer of the case, Aslam Pervez Abro, produced both the suspects before the administrative judge of the accountability courts, Fariq Anwar Qazi, and sought extension in their physical custody for further interrogation and investigation. The IO submitted a progress report, stating that during the course of interrogation further evidence had come on record that both
the suspects were involved in cheating the public at large in the FHSK in connivance with officials of the PAF. Blatant violation of laws “In execution and launching of the FHSK, the suspects blatantly flouted the relevant government laws and carried out advertisement, sale, development and booking without getting approval of its layout plan from the Malir Development Authority and No-Objection Certificate from the Sindh Building Control Authority,” the report states. Thousands of angry protesters, most of them students, have taken to the streets in the wake of the tragedy, chanting slogans against the Islamic Republic. Iran announced its first arrests over the accidental shooting on Tuesday, without naming who or how many people had been detained. U.S. senator says he has the votes needed to support resolution restraining Trump on Iran
A Democratic senator says he has at least 51 votes to support a bipartisan resolution asserting that President Donald Trump must seek approval from Congress before engaging in further military action against Iran. Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia says the Senate could vote as soon as next week on the measure, which is co-sponsored by two Republican senators and has support from at least two more Republicans. Republican Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky have co-sponsored the measure, and GOP Sens. Todd Young of Indiana and Susan Collins of Maine said Tuesday they will support it. The bipartisan resolution “clearly states that America can always defend itself,” against attack from Iran or any other country, Kaine said, “but we don’t think that this president — or any president — should send our troops into war without a vote of Congress.” Kaine has long pushed for congressional action reasserting congressional power to declare war, but he said Tuesday he has received renewed support after the Trump administration killed Iran’s top general earlier this month. Tehran responded to the U.S. attack by launching missiles at two military bases in Iraq that house
American troops. No serious casualties were reported. Kaine said he has removed, at Republicans’ request, language that targeted Trump. Instead the measure is a more general statement declaring that Congress has the sole power to declare war and directing the president to terminate use of military force against Iran or any part of its government without approval from Congress. Young said in a statement Tuesday that he opposed “a politically charged version” of Kaine’s war powers resolution, but supports revised language reasserting Congress’s constitutional role in debating military action. “Our service members are willing to put politics aside for our national security, we need to do the same,” Young said. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans oppose the resolution, saying it would send the wrong message to U.S. allies. The Democratic-controlled House passed a separate war powers resolution last week. The House measure is not binding on the president and does not require his signature. If the Senate approves the Kaine measure, the House could take up the Senate resolution and send it to Trump. Source: Global News
TORONTO -- Western Canada and much of Yukon and the Northwest Territories continue to deal with bone-chilling Arctic cold which is not expected to relent for the next couple days. Some wind chill values will be as low as – 50 C, as a collection of cold dry air from the northeastern part of Eurasia – known as a Siberian High – has moved south and lingered over Canada. Extreme cold is hitting much of B.C. along with 10 to 15 centimetres of snow expected
for places such as Metro Vancouver, the southern Gulf Island and Vancouver Island, according to Environment Canada. Strong wind gusts have also prompted the weather service to issue wind warnings for Surrey, Langley, Delta and Richmond. The wind is so strong in fact, that Chilliwack city officials told CTV News Vancouver gusts were undoing the work of snowplows.

Iran warns Europeans of ‘consequences’ in nuclear dispute Iran warned the United Kingdom, France and Germany about “the consequences” of their decision to launch a dispute mechanism against it under the 2015 nuclear deal. The European nations announced on Tuesday they triggered the dispute mechanism provided for in the landmark nuclear agreement in order to force Iran to honour its commitments under the accord. Triggering the mechanism was a “strategic mistake”, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said. “The usage of the dispute mechanism is legally baseless and a strategic mistake from a political standpoint,” Zarif was quoted by the semi-official Fars News Agency as saying. Analysts say the move may mean the end of the nuclear accord and the reimposition of more sanctions on Tehran. “Of course, if the Europeans ... seek to abuse [this process] they must also be prepared to accept the consequences,” Iran’s foreign ministry said in a statement. Tehran suggested it had little faith in the declaration by the Europeans that they were determined “to work with all participants to preserve” the historic deal. “On the contrary, it once again signals to everyone - in particular to the three European state parties to the agreement - that it will respond seriously and firmly to any disloyalty, ill will, or unconstructive action,” the statement added. The United States unilaterally pulled out of the multilateral nuclear deal in May 2018 and reimposed crippling sanctions on Iran. Iran has long accused the Europeans of reneging on promises to protect its economy from US sanctions. Foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi dismissed the “completely passive action” of the three countries and said Iran would support any act of “goodwill and constructive effort” to save the agreement. Following Washington’s decision to withdraw from the accord, Iran began dropping its commitments under the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. On January 6, days after the US assassination of a top Iranian general, Tehran took a further step by announcing it would scrap limits on enriching uranium, though it said it would continue cooperating with the United Nations nuclear watchdog. The three European signatories now say they have “no choice” but to trigger the mechanism. Russia - also a signatory of the agreement
- condemned the European Union move to put the Iran nuclear deal in dispute. “We do not rule out that the thoughtless actions of the Europeans could lead to a new escalation around the Iranian nuclear accord,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. Ellie Geranmayeh, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said the triggering of the process “set in motion a new phase” with “considerable risk”. She said the current impasse could only be solved if the Europeans presented Iran with an economic package to offset US sanctions - which so far they have been unable to do to Tehran’s satisfaction. On the other hand, Iran could respond to this “pressure tactic” by in turn further stepping up its nuclear programme and leaving the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which would be a “major turning point”, Geranmayeh said. Ali Vaez, project director for Iran for the International Crisis Group, pointed out that China and Russia have already suggested they will not recognise the reimposition of UN sanctions, potentially leading to “deepening fissures over this issue”. “UN sanction snapback could exhaust whatever leverage Europe retains without producing any gains, and closing the door on Europe’s ability to even mediate tensions between Iran and the US,” he wrote. Analysts say the UN sanctions that would be reimposed would have little impact on the Iranian economy, already under severe strain from measures the US has taken since May 2018. However, the issue is symbolically important because the UN sanctions included an arms embargo, which will expire in October 2020. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in November that the lifting of the embargo was a “political and security goal” for Iran. Conversely, the US and its allies in the region have been keen to maintain the embargo, with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo branding the October 2020 deadline a “countdown to terror”. f a i th If somebody’s debt are transferred to a rich debtor, the Hawala is irrevocable…Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, Procrastination (delay) in paying debts by a wealthy person is injustice. So, if your debt is transferred from your debtor to a rich debtor, you should agree. Sahih Al Bukhari 1: Chapter 39, Hadith 2288
BY: MOHAMMAD YACOOB simple act that can make a dramatic difference and help human beings during the most challenging segments of their lives is smiling. The untapped powers of smile when uncovered, inspire people during difficult times. Human beings are part of a naturally smiling species and by using smiling powers can positively impact any situation in life. The three-dimensional ultrasound technology, image shows developing babies appear to smile even in the womb, and continue to smile in response to the sound of the human voice. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) on many occasions demonstrated that smiling is really good for human beings. His companion, Abdullah ibn Haarith, once said in one of the Ahadith, “I never came across a person who smiled as Prophet Muhammad.” Prophet Muhammad regarded smiling to a brother as an act of charity. Another companion, Jarir ibn Abdullah said, “The Messenger of God never refused me permission to see him since I embraced Islam and never looked at me except with a smile (on his face).” Prophet Muhammad told all of us in a very positive way to smile more, and in the process earn blessings of Allah. A smile is a beautiful and powerful gesture. It conveys the greatest emotional side of life. Smiling is an art. We must change our attitude and frame of mind and learn how to smile better to give the highest positive emotional message to the person we are facing at that very moment. A genuine smile lights up the world.

Rain Prayer
Greet Everyone With A Smile
Prophet Muhammad taught this. Prophet Muhammad said that even a smile is charity and this hadīth I had taken to heart several decades ago and started smiling to display my high Islamic spirits. Putting on a smile while talking to others, reading a book, listening to a humorous anecdote, greeting others, have helped me become more comfortable with others. I have found that the attitude of others changes when you smile; make things happier. This prophetic tradition has helped me become a better person. Being an engineer and a physicist, I made a decision more than forty years ago, to put my smile to test and conduct an experiment. People sometimes tend to give you a look questioning a smile, feeling threatened by it, posing questions, expressing them through their eyes by rolling their eyes or body gestures. My smile must help bring a little happiness and not pose a threat or questions, so, I augmented it with a gesture of salutation by raising my hand and softly touching my forehead, announcing indirectly the absence of a spurious smile. I would like to give a few examples from my own life that make me say Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar. Once, I pulled my car out of the driveway and got on the street. In front of me, approximately 100 feet

his prayer is a means of seeking rain from Allah, the Exalted, during times of drought. That is, people are naturally disposed to ask help from the One Who is able to support them; Allah Alone. This prayer was known among the previous nations. It is regarded also as one of the acts of the prophets, peace be upon them all, as Allah, the Exalted, Says (what means): source www.islamweb.net “And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people...” [Quran 2: 60] Similarly, the Seal of Prophets, Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) performed Prayer for Rain for his people many times, and in many ways. In addition, Muslim scholars unanimously agree on the legality of such an act. The Prayer for Rain is ordained during times of drought and times when rain fails, which causes harm to people. Then there is no way out except by supplicating their Lord and asking Him for water (rain). People may supplicate Allah in various ways. For instance, people may supplicate Allah in Prayer, whether in congregation or alone. They may also supplicate Him by in-
away, young neighborhood boys were playing hockey on the street using hockey sticks and a puck. A hockey puck is a disk that serves the same functions in various games as a ball does. I had unwaveringly made up my mind more than forty years ago that I would smile in the face of a challenging situation. I could have blown my horn to alert the boys. My earlier experience, based on watching frowning faces of playful boys, hideous glances and taunting words, appeared in front of my eyes, a direct result of horn blowing. The situation needed a smile and a salutation. I slowed down, reduced my speed to less than ten miles, and approached the street crowd. The boys were busy playing. I smiled at one of the boys, who directed others to move. One boy uttered a few words. I turned my face towards him, smiled and raised my hand, positioned it softly on my forehead. His reaction startled me; he shouted directions at other boys. They scrambled and formed two lines, one on each side of the street and saluted me as I was driving away. Allahu Akbar. A smile and the confirmation that I was smiling with sincerity helped communicating with the young boys. Almost twenty years ago, I got involved in a car accident when a driver cut in front of me and compelled
me to blow the horn for more than five seconds. The other driver moved back into his lane and gave a dirty look. I smiled, raised my hand and saluted him. His attitude changed. He rolled down his window and said, sorry. On one occasion, I noticed the driver in the car on the opposite side of the street, taking a right turn. A driver coming out of the parking lot of the gas/petrol station on the corner suddenly came on the street. I used the horn to warn the driver making the right turn to get his attention not to hit the car coming out of the petrol station or to move in the lane I was about to enter. Hearing the horn, he slammed hard on the car brakes, his car shook; the other car sped away. I completed the left turn and the other driver took the right turn. I smiled and saluted him while watching his furious look, when we both were next to each other. He changed his mood, rolled down his window and said, “Thank you, you saved my life.” Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sent down as a mercy to mankind. He showed us ways to achieve Taqwa, greater God consciousness and nearness to God. He made us aware of other ways to improve ourselves to bring tranquility and peace in this world and serve humanity. One of the tools he provided us is use of smile. I love to smile. May Allah give me the strength to face angel of death – Malak al-Maut – when he arrives. Families of plane crash victims face Peter MacKay running for Conservative complicated process for bringing bodies home leadership
TORONTO -- For the families of the 57 Canadians killed in the Iranian plane crash, returning their loved ones’ bodies home is proving to be a complicated process. The majority of the Canadian passengers hold dual citizenship with Iran. Because Iran does not recognize dual citizenship, it insists 140 Iranians were on the flight and just three Canadians. Farbod Pourjam’s uncle Mansour was on the plane and his family wants to bury Mansour’s body in Canada. “Mansour was coming to Canada, he was a Canadian,” Pourjam told CTV News. “He has a 13-year-old son here, Ryan, and that’s what Ryan wants.” Pourjam, an international student, was being sponsored by his uncle, meaning now his life in Canada is in limbo. “They never just destroyed 176 passengers, they destroyed 176 families,” Pourjam said. Another major obstacle with bringing the bodies home comes from identifying them. The RCMP is collecting DNA samples from family members to speed up the identification process, but many of the remains have yet to be identified. Some of the bodies are already on their way to Canada, however. CTV News spoke to a

man who expects to get the body of his wife tomorrow, but declined an interview because “the government is sensitive to foreign news agencies.” Foreign Affairs Canada is hopeful that all the Canadian victims will be returned home in short order.“We are expecting full co-operation from the Iranian authorities regarding all 57 Canadians,” a spokesperson for the agency said in a statement. Canada is hosting a meeting of the International Coordination and Response Group in London, England, later this week. The meeting involves most of the countries that lost passengers on the flight and the topic of bringing home the victims’ bodies is expected to be a high priority.
Regulator mum on ride-hailing, as B.C. premier calls delays disappointing OTTAWA -- Prominent Conservative Peter MacKay is running for Conservative party leadership. MacKay made the announcement on Twitter Wednesday afternoon. “I’m in. Stay tuned,” MacKay said in a tweet. He tweeted the news in both official languages. He is expected to make a formal leadership announcement next week in Nova Scotia. “A lot of people are just really excited to see him confirmed,” said Michael Diamond, who will handle MacKay’s communications for the campaign. Diamond added that a “lot of people” are “ready to move now.” you to ask your questions is there. They’re the ones making the decision at this point. We’ve laid out the framework, we’ve passed and changed legislation. And now it’s up to them.”However, the Transportation Board has gone silent, refusing interview requests. That’s left 24 ride-hailing applicants, the public and — most surprisingly — the government, in the dark. “You’d get more information from the Iraqi information minister than the PTB, it’s ridiculous,” said Liberal critic Jas Johal. “We have no idea what’s happening. Companies to my understanding are sitting there and staring at the computer screens on the PTB website and hitting refresh every few minutes.” Board chair Catharine Reid, whom the NDP government appointed to the job, has refused interview requests for more than four months. “It would be inappropriate for the board chair to comment on, or participate in an interview regarding the ride-hailing applications currently before the board,” the Transportation Board said in a written statement on Tuesday. “The board is working toward issuing decisions on ride-hailing applications as expeditiously as possible. The review process is taking time because of the large number of applications that have been filed and the significant volume of materials involved.” Meanwhile, images on social media recently showed massive lineups for taxis at Vancouver International Airport as frustrated passengers waited in the cold and snow for limited rides and complained about being unable to call ride-hailing vehicles. The government’s ride-hailing law put the Transportation Board in charge of licence approvals and reforms to the taxi sector. The rationale was that an independent body would remove politics from the process.
be MacKay’s campaign manager. It isn’t Nuttall’s first time helping with a leadership bid – the former MP worked with Maxime Bernier when Bernier sought the Conservative party leadership in 2017. Another key organizer of Bernier’s leadership bid, Emrys Graefe, is also helping with MacKay’s campaign. The firm Graefe works for, Rubicon Strategy, has been enlisted to help with MacKay’s leadership bid – though founder Kory Teneycke will not participate. MacKay held a Nova Scotia seat in the House of Commons from 1997 to 2015. Before leaving politics, MacKay held multiple cabinet positions including justice minister, national defence minister and foreign affairs minister. MacKay was also instrumental in the creation of the Conservative Party of Canada. While serving as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, MacKay negotiated a merger with Stephen Harper’s Canadian Alliance in 2003 to create the modern-day party he now hopes to lead. MacKay’s name is frequently raised in discussions about the Conservative leadership, and his name was invoked when outgoing Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer announced his intention to step down on Dec. 12. MacKay’s expected announcement means he will be joining several prominent Conservatives who are running to lead the party.
CTV News has confirmed Conservative MPs Pierre Poilievre and Erin O’Toole both plan to enter the race, and Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu has already announced her plans to run. Former NDP leader and CTV political commentator Tom Mulcair has said former Quebec premier Jean Charest is also considering a bid. The Tory race has also had one drop out. Unelected Conservative organizer Bryan Brulotte, who was the first to announce his bid, left the race on Tuesday. He said the race’s tight rules pushed him out and went on to throw his support behind MacKay. Contenders must abide by the official rules of the race to be considered, and that includes gathering the signatures of 3,000 supporters by March 25. The supporters will have to have been party members for 21 days before signing a hopeful’s leadership nomination papers. The race also requires candidates to pay a $200,000 entry fee and a $100,000 compliance deposit. Leadership hopefuls have until Feb. 27 to submit their applications. Source: www.dawn.com
Amazon’s Bezos promises $1 billion in bid to see off Indian e-commerce storm
The NDP government faces public pressure to approve Uber and Lyft, but also promised to protect the traditional taxi sector in the last election and is reliant on taxi drivers for votes in key Surrey ridings. Both ride-hailing companies and taxi associations appear as confused as the public as to the delays. “There is dead silence,” added Carolyn Bauer, spokesperson for the Vancouver Taxi Association. “No one is getting any information. Nothing at all.” Uber is also mystified. “We are respecting the PTB process and look forward to making our app available as soon as possible,” said Michael van Hemmen, the company’s B.C. manager. The taxi association continues to lobby the Transportation Board to put in a 2,500-licence cap on ride-hailing vehicles to match the 2,500 taxis in Metro Vancouver, as well as to ban what it calls “predatory pricing” from big companies like Uber and Lyft. The board decided in August not to put a cap on ride-hailing licences, sparking several NDP cabinet ministers to express public concern and Transportation Minister Claire Trevena to write a letter expressing disappointment. Horgan said this week his government has tried to suggest action from the Transportation Board, while respecting its independence. “We’ve been doing what’s appropriate nudging for an independent agency,” said the premier. “We have done, I believe, everything we can to make this as open and transparent as possible for the existing industry, and also for the travelling public. And when it gets done, it will be done in a year after that and you won’t be asking me why it took so long.” Not good enough, say the Opposition Liberals. “The public is frustrated,” said Johal. “And for the premier to wash his hands of this and say he’s frustrated — look, you set up this process, this is on you and your government.” Source: Vancouver Sun
Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos promised on Wednesday a new billion-dollar investment in India, just two days after authorities launched an anti-trust investigation into the e-commerce giant. A three-day visit by Bezos, whose worth has been estimated at more than $110 billion, sparked protests in New Delhi and other cities by traders who accuse Amazon and its main US-owned rival Flipkart of killing off India’s army of street traders. Bezos, who has spent heavily to make his company an e-commerce titan in the world’s second most-populous nation, sought to head off critics by promising one billion dollars to digitise small and mediumsized Indian businesses. “We will use our global footprint to export $10 billion worth of ‘Make in India’ products across the world by 2025,” he said, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign to boost national production. Bezos highlighted India’s growing importance, saying “the 21st century will be the Indian century” and that the US-India alli-

OTTAWA -- Another 69 Canadians are heading to Australia this week to help fight the country’s worst bush fires in recent memory. Foreign Affairs Minister FrancoisPhilippe Champagne says the deployment comes after Australia asked for more help. More than 200 bush fires continue to rage across Australia, with the two most populated states of New South Wales and Victoria bearing the brunt of the damage. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre says 27 incident management staff will leave for Melbourne Thursday, followed by two more incident managers and 40 firefighters on the weekend. This is the sixth wave of Canadians helping

Amazon and Flipkart — founded in India but taken over by Walmart in 2018 for $16 billion — face increasing scrutiny and resentment despite their popularity among customers. The Competition Commission of India announced on Monday that it was investigating both companies over accusations they undermine traditional traders by favouring “preferred sellers” on their platforms.

In India, a firebrand’s anti-Modi mantra resonates at nationwide protests against citizenship bill
S
tanding on a stage in the centre of one of India’s most prestigious universities, the firebrand politician looked out at the cheering supporters before him and issued a sharp challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The idea of India is under threat,” said Kanhaiya Kumar, a leftist politician from the northeastern state of Bihar, his voice rising in the cold evening air. “We will not stop. Let the government use force. Let them bring the police.” He paused. “We will rise to prove them wrong. Listen, Modi!” “Freedom!” the crowd chanted after each line Kumar barked from the stage, jabbing his hand in the air for emphasis and occasionally fingering the red scarf slung around his neck. The 33-year-old Bihari politician has emerged in recent weeks as a major irritant and political challenge to Modi, a Hindu nationalist who has faced escalating protests over a citizenship law he introduced in December. Critics say the law, the Citizenship Amendment Act, marginalises India’s Muslim minority and undermines the country’s secular ethos. There is no single leader in the protests, which are sweeping university campuses and which some students say are inspired by the leaderless anti-government protests in Hong Kong. But a recording of Kumar’s “Freedom” anthem is played at almost all of them, with the crowds joining in for the chorus. Modi has won back-to-back national elections with strong majorities, and the Com-
munist Party of India faction that Kumar leads has little clout nationally. But a senior aide to the prime minister says the government is worried that his prominence and messaging could undermine Modi’s policies and weaken him politically. Kumar’s message has largely focused on accusations that Modi has failed to address rising unemployment and create jobs for millions of young Indians, and that his hardline pro-Hindu policies are undermining the country’s secular identity and making life difficult for minorities like Muslims. When asked about his policies in a telephone interview with Reuters, Kumar declined to make “political promises” beyond pledging to uphold the constitution, saying his main aim was to hold the government to account. “Let us not forget Modi has used religion to accentuate the fault lines, and he has failed to create jobs. I don’t want anyone to forget this,” said Kumar.
Opposition support
While analysts say that Kumar’s rise does not immediately threaten Modi, it could provide a basis for a resurgence of the opposition parties that were trounced by the prime minister’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the national elections in May. Several political parties, including the main opposition Congress party, have tried to enlist Kumar to their camps, but he has so far been non-committal. “His presence widens the scope for the fragmented opposition to unite in the near term to dent Modi’s governing style,” said Sanjay Kumar, director of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, an independent research institute in Delhi. Kanhaiya Kumar’s speech at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which has been
rocked repeatedly by clashes between opponents and proponents of the new law, attracted hundreds of supporters on Jan 7. But his words have resonated far beyond the gates of JNU’s leafy campus. Kumar’s speeches are watched avidly by his supporters he has about 2 million YouTube subscribers and a million Twitter followers and his anti-Modi slogans are chanted at protests across the country. While he has been a well-known critic of the Modi government for several years, the recent protests have put him at centre stage in the fragmented and weakened political opposition. “Kumar is unique and forces everyone to think and question. He has been able to fill the gap created by absence of opposition,” said Sanjay Kumar of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies.
Common roots
While they are separated in age by almost four decades, Kumar has much in common with Modi, who is 69. Both come from humble backgrounds, are skilful orators and are firmly committed to their political ideologies. Modi is the son of a roadside tea seller; Kumar’s father was a farmer and his mother works for a rural childcare centre in Bihar, one of the most populous but also poorest states in India. Kumar did well at school, and was able to attend university in Patna, the state capital, where he studied geography and got involved in student politics. He was later admitted to JNU, which has a reputation for leftist politics, and earned a doctorate in African studies and became president of the student council. It was also at JNU that Kumar first shot to national prominence. In 2016, he was arrested at an on-campus rally and charged with sedition for allegedly shouting antiIndia slogans. In an interview with Reuters, Kumar denied the charges and said Modi government’s was trying to muzzle dissent. The courts have yet to begin hearing in the case.“My critical thinking and ability to question Modi’s policies have scared the government since 2016,” Kumar said. “Now, I am not alone. More and more people are joining our movement against Modi.”Kumar ran for a parliamentary seat from Bihar in the national elections in 2019, but was defeated by a candidate from the BJP, which is allied with the socialist party that dominates the politics of
the state.Since then, he has been travelling across India to spread his political views and mobilise grassroots followers. Kumar’s appeal to young and first-time voters has worried Modi, the aide to the prime minister said on condition of anonymity. “We watch him closely,” he said. The government was also closely tracking Kumar’s personal life and his funding, the aide said, without elaborating. The prime minister’s office and the Home Ministry did not respond to repeated requests from Reuters for comment on Kumar.
Supporting secularism
Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act have raged across India since Dec. At least 25 people have died and thousands of protesters have been arrested. The new law eases the path for people from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to gain Indian citizenship, but only non-Muslims. Critics fear the new law will be used to
discriminate against Muslims in India, one of many measures issued by Modi’s Hindu nationalist government that they fear is chipping away at India’s secular constitution. Modi’s government maintains that the new law is necessary to help minorities facing persecution in Muslim-majority nations, and it has called the pan-India protests politically motivated. But Kumar said the protests were just one part of a larger drive to protect India’s secular identity, which is guaranteed by the constitution. Modi’s critics say they are growing increasingly uneasy with his Hindu agenda, which appears to have gained emphasis since he was re-elected in May. In November, an Indian Supreme Court decision handed Hindu groups control of a contested site where a 16th century mosque was razed by a mob in 1992. In August, the government stripped occupied Kashmir of its special status and split it into two federally administered regions. “The essence of India is at stake like never before,” said Kumar. Anurag Kashyap demands Modi’s father’s birth certificate
Indian director Anurag Kashyap demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi to show the birth certificate of his father as well as his own birth certificate before asking the citizens for their documents. Anurag is continuously criticizing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) bill. According to The Times of India Anurag took on the twitter and called the government “dumb” for its actions while also comparing
CAA to demonetisation. “This government can get into a dialogue if they know how to talk. They can not face a single question that’s not been vetted , they don’t have a plan, they haven’t put out a system. This is a dumb government,” said Kashyap boldly. “There CAA is like demonitisation. No plan. No vision. Just bullying.” concluded the director. Source:www.aaj.tv/english

Wagging the Dog: Trump Does It This Time
BY: HABIB SIDDIQUI n 2011 and 2012, years before he began his own presidential campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly accused President Barack Obama of seeking war with Iran to help win the 2012 presidential election. He tweeted: “In order to get elected, @BarackObama will start a war with Iran.” (Nov. 29, 2011) “Now that Obama’s poll numbers are in tailspin – watch for him to launch a strike in Libya or Iran. He is desperate.” (Oct. 9, 2012)
“Don’t let Obama play the Iran card in order to start a war in order to get elected--be careful Republicans!” (Oct 22, 2012) On Thursday, January 2, 2020, PresidentDonald Trump ordered the killing of Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military commander who was one of the most powerful men in the Middle East. General Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, was killed by a drone attack on his convoy at an airport in Baghdad. Among those killed was Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iranbacked militias in Iraq known as the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), and five others. The strike came just a few days after supporters of the Iran-backed Iraqi militia, Kataib
Hezbollah, mobbed the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. The breach at the embassy followed U.S. airstrikes on Sunday (December 29, 2019) that killed 25 fighters of the Kataib Hezbollah. The U.S. military said the strikes were in retaliation for last week’s killing of an American contractor in a Dec. 27th rocket attack on an Iraqi military base in Kirkuk that the U.S. blamed on the militia. The Defense Department said Thursday that Soleimani had “orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the last several months - including the attack on December 27th - culminating in the death and wounding of additional American and Iraqi personnel. The assassination of General Soleimani came with Trump’s approval rating languishing at 42.4%, according a model by FiveThirtyEight, and he is the first US president to face an impeachment trial while running for reelection. Interestingly, Trump is not the only POTUS bombing or killing someone of high value when domestic politics shows a high a disapproval rating at home. The trend has repeated
many times since at least the time of Bill Clinton (1993-2000). During the Monica Lewinsky scandal in 1998 and 1999, President Bill Clinton initiated bombing campaigns in Sudan and in Iraq, and critics claimed he was trying to divert attention. The Al Shifa factory in Khartoum was the largest manufacturer of medicines in all of Sudan, producing over half of the country’s pharmaceutical products and specializing in anti-malaria drugs. It was “pulverized,” reduced to nothing but “broken concrete and iron bars,” leaving “thousands of brown bottles of veterinary and other medicines” littered across the sand on the direct orders of Bill Clinton on August 20, 1998. The strike was in retaliation for Osama bin Laden’s recent bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. When it was pointed out to the Clinton administration that they had just eliminated one of Sudan’s major medical suppliers, spokespeople “claimed the plant was actually a disguised chemical weapons factory.” ......... A step-by-step guide to what’s next as the Senate prepares to hold Trump’s impeachment trial. The United States House of Representatives on Wednesday formally handed off two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate, clearing the way for a trial. The House of Representatives impeached Trump on December 18 for abuse of power related to his efforts to get Ukraine to launch an investigation into his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, and obstruction of Congress for his refusal to participate in the impeachment inquiry. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.
Trump is almost certain to be acquitted in the Republican-led Senate, but the trial could deliver some unexpected moments if witnesses are called. As the Senate prepares for the trial, here’s a look at what happens next. When will the trial take place? What time? Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the trial would start “in earnest” on Tuesday following procedural matters scheduled to be completed this week. In terms of timing, most expect the trial to go six days a week (Monday-Saturday) and begin at 1pm local time (18:00 GMT). What will happen first? Following a host of formalities, includ-
ing the swearing-in of members and other housekeeping matters, the Senate will put forth an initial resolution outlining how the chamber will move forward with the trial. According to McConnell, that measure would set up a phase for arguments by the House managers, who act as prosecutors, and Trump’s defence team. There would then be a period for senators to submit written questions, which would be answered out loud by managers and lawyers in the Senate chamber. This phase could last one to two weeks. McConnell only needs 51 votes to approve these rules. The Republicans hold a 53-47 majority. Unlike the impeachment trial of former President Bill Clinton, sup-
port for the Trump trial rules package will likely fall along party lines. The Senate must also formally notify Trump of the impeachment articles and ask for his reply. Source: www.aljazeera.com

Is Putin attempting to carve out a ‘father of the nation’ role?
By: Julian Colling After he proposed sweeping constitutional reform, analysts say Russian president is seeking to extend his hold on power. In his annual address to parliament, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed constitutional changes that could see him extend his hold on power. Here are five things to know: What has happened? In a move that has surprised Russians and international observers, the Russian prime minister and government resigned on Wednesday as Putin proposed sweeping constitutional changes. Dmitry Medvedev , the outgoing prime minister who had served for eight years, said government officials quit to give Putin room to carry out the changes he wants to make. Less than three hours later, Putin named federal tax chief Mikhail Mishustin, 53, a relatively unknown technocrat, as the new prime minister. In his annual address to parliament, Putin said he wanted to put an “entire package of proposed amendments “ to a referendum. Among his proposals, he suggested: Transferring more power to parliament by allowing lawmakers to name prime ministers and cabinet members (currently the president makes these appointments) Amending how heads of security agencies are appointed to allow the president to decide after consulting the Federation Council (the upper house of Russia’s Federal Assembly) “Enshrining” the State Council, a body that advises the president Lifting the residency requirements for presidential candidates from 10 years to 25 Preventing presidential candidates who have held foreign residency in the past, not just at election time Allowing the Russian constitutional court to review whether laws comply with the constitution before the president signs them Preventing international law from being prioritised over Russian law Prohibiting civil servants from holding foreign citizenship
Adding a provision to keep minimum wage and pensions above the poverty line Why has Putin done this? Observers have been looking for clues as to how Putin might reform the political system before 2024, when his term ends. “ All last year, the question of what would happen in 2024 when Putin’s presidential term ends became the obsession of the Moscow chattering classes, and so at last we seem to have an answer,” Mark Galeotti, honorary professor at University College London’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies, told Al Jazeera. “He is tired of the job of actually running the country, but can’t simply step down - in such a system, your status, your legacy and your security all depend on retaining some power. So, he will weaken the presidency and shift more powers to the prime minister, so they can be counterweights to each other, while creating a new ‘father of the nation’ role, probably as chairman of a revamped State Council. “It’s not about staying in power. If he just wanted to remain president, he could easily just change the constitution to waive term limits. It’s about creating a form of political retirement that continues to provide him with security and relevance.” Putin said the measures would “increase the role of parliament and parliamentary parties, powers and independence of the prime minister and all cabinet members “. He added that Russia should remain a “strong presidential republic”. While he promised that he would not seek a third term, something that is currently unconstitutional, analysts largely agreed that Putin is trying to extend his own influence beyond his presidential term. He could be trying to carve out a new role for himself - one he can fill when he steps down at age 71. ”Putin wants to create the conditions and the mechanism not only to control the future president, but also help him, in a way,” Tatiana Stanovaya, a Moscow-based political expert and founder of R.Politik, a consultancy group, told Al Jazeera.
“Maybe that’s because Putin could already have found his successor and they have dealt these changes together, to ensure both their safety and room to operate: that of him in his future position, and that of the next president.” Russian journalist and political analyst Fyodor Lukianov said it seemed as though “the transition of power” has already started. “In 2018, after Putin’s re-election, a feeling of stagnation took over in the country. Nothing happened nor changed, the government stayed the same as in the previous term. Many thought it was already the beginning of the end - and now we’re seeing the start of the transition,” he told Al Jazeera. “The constitutional changes proposed by Putin have an obvious design: he wants the political system to be diversified. But moderately, not changed entirely. He’s willing to create a new position for himself, putting into constitution increased powers for the head of the Russian State Council.” Did the government quit in anger, and is there any backlash? Outgoing PM Medvedev is a longtime Putin ally, and there seemed to be no animosity as he and the government stepped down. Medvedev will be appointed the new deputy head of Russia’s influential Security Council. Dmitri Trenin, head of the Carnegie Moscow Center, tweeted: “Medvedev’s career isn’t over, Putin still needs him in transition scenario. He remains what he’s always been: [Putin’s] alter ego.” He added: “Mishustin’s elevation to Russia’s PM is designed to get more competent leadership in Cabinet, which will have to focus on all-important domestic agenda.” Opposition figures hit out at the Russian president. Prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny tweeted that Putin’s speech signalled his desire to continue calling the shots even after his presidential term ends. Opposition politician Dmitry Gudkov described the move as a “constitutional coup”. Who is Mishustin?
Beijinang Richmond Halal Cuisine Restaurant Mikhail Mishustin is widely credited with modernising the federal tax service and is considered a talented technocrat. Stanovaya said: “This is the most comfortable format for Putin to work with - putting a technocrat at the position of PM gives him space to manoeuvre. “It looks like [Putin] wants to limit the prerogatives of the future president, so that most definitely means that he’s leaving presidency for good; he won’t stay in power. He will have to find a successor. He plans to find a loyal successor, who will be able to continue his policies. Of course there will maybe be some disagreements, but his goal is to create some leverage and mechanisms [in the system] to manage the disagreements and still have leverage.” Lukianov said of Putin, “ by appointing a PM without any political ambitions, but loyal to him, it gives him time to think”. What happens next? Russia last conducted a referendum in 1993 when it adopted the current constitution under Putin’s predecessor, Boris Yeltsin. Putin didn’t give a date for the proposed referendum. The lower house of parliament will vote on whether to approve Mishustin as the new PM on Thursday. The current government will continue its work until Putin hand-picks a new one to oversee the constitutional changes to Russia’s systems and structures of power. Source: www.aljazeera.com

12 Politics Iran plane crash: What challenges does Canada face in probe? Jamadi ul I, 22,1441H January 17, 2020
Experts welcome early signs of cooperation, but warn Canada must tread carefully in complicated political climate. by Jillian Kestler-D’Amours Montreal, Canada - Amid vigils, fundraisers and an outpouring of public support, Canada
has emerged as a leader in international efforts to seek justice for the victims of last week’s deadly Ukrainian plane crash in Iran. “The families of the victims and all Canadians want answers. I want answers. That means closure, transparency, accountability and justice - and this government will not rest until we get that,” Justin Trudeau said on January 9, a day after the Ukrainian Airlines flight went down near Tehran. All 176 people on board Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 were killed, including 57 Canadian citizens. Speaking to victims’ families on Sunday, Trudeau reiterated his promise to pursue “justice and accountability”. But according
to legal and political experts, without the results of a thorough investigation, it remains unclear what justice may look like, and the search for answers may be complicated for Canada by the tense political climate. “Canada is to an extent at the mercy of the Iranian authorities to be able to enter the country, to be able to access the crash site, to be able to get as much information as possible,” said Amanda Ghahremani, a lawyer who specialises in international criminal law, access to justice and redress for victims of atrocities. As a result, the Canadian government must tread carefully to ensure “that the victims and the victims’ families have access to the truth … to justice, and … to some form of reparation”.
“There’s still so much that we don’t know,” she told Al Jazeera.
Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence, Pierre Paul-Hus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety, and Todd Doherty, Shadow Minister for Transport, issued the following statement calling on the Trudeau Liberals to take immediate action regarding the developing situation in Iran: “Last night, the Iranian regime took responsibility for shooting down Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752. As a result, 176 people including 57 Canadians lost their lives and their friends and families are hurt-
ing and reeling from the loss. “Justin Trudeau and the Liberals must take immediate action to ensure those responsible are held accountable for this terrible atrocity. “Canada’s Conservatives call on the Trudeau Liberals to take the following measures: 1. Immediately implement the Conservative motion passed by Parliament in 2018 to list Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. 2. Demand Iran compensate all victims of the crash, repatriate their remains, and hold the perpetrators of this atrocity accountable. 3. Be prepared to impose Magnitsky Sanc-
tions on Iran if they don’t fully cooperate with the international investigation. “The fact that 57 Canadians lost their lives due to an Iranian missile requires action by the Trudeau Liberals. The status quo is unacceptable. The actions listed above represent a measured response to ensure that the families of the victims receive justice. “The Iranian regime must not get a free pass after killing 57 Canadians. Canada’s Conservatives will continue to advocate for the appropriate and measured response necessary to ensure that Iran is held accountable and the families of the victims receive the justice they deserve.”
country. Brulotte had signalled his intention to run for the party leadership in December, just days after current leader Andrew Scheer announced his resignation. In early January, Brulotte began rolling out an early campaign, despite the absence of formal rules for the contest. Unlike some of the better-known contenders, he faced an uphill battle to get his name and positions known across the country. He’d hoped to use his relative outsider status, however, to recruit new party members who’d back his bid, and in turn become a new base of support for the party. But the official rules of the race, released over the weekend, require candidates to have the support of 3,000 people who’ve been party members for 21 days before they sign someone’s leadership nomination papers.
One thousand of those signatures are required by the end of February, giving candidates effectively less than a month to sign up new members if they don’t know enough existing ones. ”Although my desire to serve was and continues to be a motivating factor, after careful consideration and review of the recently published regulations, I have decided to withdraw from the leadership race for the Conservative party,” Brulotte said in a statement to The Canadian Press. Brulotte said he still intends to try for a career in politics -- he’ll seek the nomination to run as a member of Parliament for the Conservatives if there’s a spot for the next federal election. He’s run once before -- as a Progressive Conservative candidate -- and that’s also part of his connection to MacKay. Brulotte
First step: Diplomacy
After initially disputing reports that an Iranian missile struck the airliner, Iran admitted that its military mistakenly shot down the Ukrainian International Airlines flight. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the fatal incident was the result of “human error” at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. Several people have been arrested, Iran said on Tuesday. The plane crashed shortly after Iran launched missiles at American targets in Iraq in retaliation for the US assassination of top Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani.

Tight rules for Conservative leadership prompt Bryan Brulotte to drop out
OTTAWA -- Tight new rules for the Conservative leadership election have led businessman and longtime party volunteer Bryan Brulotte to declare he’s no longer making a bid for the job. Instead, he’s encouraging people to support potential contender Peter MacKay, saying MacKay is best placed to one day run the
volunteered on MacKay’s 2003 campaign for leadership of the PC party. After MacKay won the leadership, he helped merge the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian Alliance to create the modern Conservative party. MacKay has yet to formally announce he’s running for the Conservative leadership, though he has been making the rounds of party and community events for weeks shoring up his own support. The deadline for candidates to submit their applications to run for the leadership is Feb. 27, and they must meet all the entry requirements -- including a $200,000 entry fee, $100,000 compliance deposit and having the 3,000 signatures by March 25. Party members are to elect a new leader on June 27 at a convention in Toronto. Source: www.ctvnews.ca
BC Liberals continue to support unfair tolls on the Port Mann Bridge
A
A tweet by BC Liberal House Leader Mary Polak raises questions about whether the BC Liberals would bring back tolls on the Port Mann bridge. Polak defended tolls on the Port Mann, saying the BC Liberals considered it a solution to traffic congestion - “Congestion returned when the tolls were removed which was predicted by all the traffic modelling - the reason we retained them.” (2020-01-09) Polak does not acknowledge the impact Port Mann tolls had on diverting traffic to the Alex Fraser and Pattullo bridges. Reinstating tolls on the Port Mann would cost daily commuters
up to $1,500 a year. Garry Begg, MLA Surrey Guildford: “John Horgan put $1,500 back in people’s pockets when he cancelled bridge tolls in 2017. That’s extra money for groceries, sports registration, or just to help families start saving. For years, Andrew Wilkinson and Mary Polak unfairly charged commuters from Surrey and the Fraser Valley while cutting taxes for the richest 2%. It’s clear the BC Liberals haven’t changed and it’s disappointing to hear they might do it again. Andrew Wilkinson is a risk British Columbians can’t afford to take.” By: Emily Della Mattia

Single-use plastic shopping bag ban in the works for Surrey
The City of Surrey has led the way on many of the green initiatives in the Metro region. Our Biofuel Facility is the only closed loop operation in North America where 100% of our curbside green bin organic waste is converted into renewable natural gas and high-quality compost. 115,000 tonnes of organic waste is diverted annually from the landfill as a result of Surrey Biofuel. The next logical step for Surrey is to ban single-use plastic shopping bags. “This is a simple and effective step that will have an immediate beneficial impact on our city,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “In this day and age where we all can play a role in curbing waste and con-
sumption, there is no reason not to have a reusable shopping bag close at hand for bagging groceries or other goods. I have asked City staff to immediately begin work on developing the proper bylaws so such a ban can be enacted by January 2021. My Council colleagues are fully in support of this initiative and a Corporate Report will be brought forward within the next month for Council action. I want to encourage Surrey businesses, and some of have already done so, to take the initiative to eliminate single-use plastic shopping bags before the city-wide ban comes into effect on January 1, 2021.” By: Oliver Lum Communications Manager
TransLink launches new RapidBus service with 4 routes
VANCOUVER -- Transit users travelling across Metro Vancouver now have access to faster routes with TransLink’s launch of a new bus service. Four routes will now offer RapidBus service, TransLink says, which is expected to bring
customers up to 20 per cent faster service. To achieve that, buses on those routes will run more frequently but stop less often, use dedicated bus lanes and have all-door boarding. “We’re stepping up our bus game,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond in a news
release. “RapidBus is a crucial part of improving the region’s bus service through the Mayors’ Vision. These RapidBus routes will benefit eight communities and bring our customers a more reliable bus service that they deserve.” he buses are expected to have softer seats, more space, real-time digital signage and audio next-bus information at RapidBus stops. The four routes, which launched Monday, include: R1 King George Boulevard – (Guildford Exchange/Newton Exchange) Every eight minutes during peak hours R3 Lougheed Highway – (Coquitlam Central Station/Haney Place) Every 10 minutes during peak hours R4 41st Avenue – (UBC/Joyce-Collingwood Station) Every three to six minutes during peak hours R5 Hastings Street – (SFU/Burrard Station)
Every four to five minutes during peak hours “These new RapidBuses will get more people to their destination faster. That means people in communities like Surrey, Maple Ridge, Coquitlam and other communities served by these lines can spend less time in traffic and more time doing the things that matter to them,” said Selina Robinson, municipal affairs and housing minister, in a news release. “These RapidBuses are just one example of how our shared commitment to transit is making a difference for people in the region.” TransLink says a fifth route, the R2 between Phibbs Exchange and Park Royal on the North Shore, will also enter service this spring. Seven more routes are expected to launch at a later date. Source: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/

New urgent and primary-care centre officially opens in Kelowna
People living in the Central Okanagan now have better access to team-based day-today public health care with the opening of the new Kelowna Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC). “The Kelowna UPCC will help connect more people in Central Okanagan communities with the health care they need, when they need it,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Thousands of area residents who currently lack a primary-care provider will benefit from increased access to same-day appointments for urgent needs and ongoing primary care, as well being able to find a doctor or care provider for regular, ongoing primary care.” The Kelowna UPCC is one of three centres now open in Interior Health. Fourteen UPCCs have been announced throughout B.C. under the government’s primary-care strategy. The Kelowna UPCC is a partnership between the Ministry of Health, Interior Health, the Central Okanagan Division of Family Practice and the Doctors of BC.
Interior Health also collaborated with the Westbank First Nation, patient partners and the Central Okanagan Regional Hospital District to develop the UPCC. The centre will provide urgent primary care for Central Okanagan residents by a team of health-care providers, including doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers and office staff. The centre will serve two purposes: to provide care for people with non-lifethreatening conditions who need to see a health-care provider within 12 to 24 hours, but don’t require an emergency department and who do not have or cannot access their family practitioner; to help attach patients to a regular primarycare provider. To facilitate this, the centre will attach patients to health-care providers in the community in collaboration with the Central Okanagan Division of Family Practice. Unattached patients will be provided with ongoing wraparound care on an interim basis,

Rouhani warns foreign forces in Middle East ‘may be in danger’ Iranian president’s remarks come after clear deal signed in 2015 between Iran and missile strikes against US targets in Iraq. European forces have been deployed alongUK, France and Germany challenged Teh- six world powers. The European nations announced on Tuesside American troops in Iraq and Afghaniran over breaking limits of nuclear deal. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told foreign powers to withdraw their forces from the Middle East, warning they “may be in danger” if they remain in the region. “Today, the American soldier is in danger, tomorrow the European soldier could be in danger,” Hassan Rouhani said in televised remarks on Wednesday, without elaborating. Rouhani’s comments mark the first time he has threatened European countries amid heightened tensions with the United States. The comments came a day after the United Kingdom, France and Germany challenged Tehran over breaking limits of a major nu-
day that they triggered the dispute mechanism provided for in the landmark agreement in order to force Tehran to honour its commitments under the accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), from which US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew in 2018. Friction in the region escalated in recent months after a series of attacks in the Gulf region that Washington blamed on Iran and its proxies, over Iranian denials. Fears of an all-out war emerged earlier in January after a US air strike killed top Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, prompting retaliatory Iranian

The security agents surrendered late on Tuesday after negotiations with their leaders. In a televised speech, al-Burhan said he would never allow a coup to take place. Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan, reporting from Khartoum, said: “After more than 15 hours of a standoff ... the Sudanese armed forces said the situation has been resolved.“It looks like the situation, for now, has been contained.” Earlier, heavy gunfire erupted in Khartoum after the agents, who had belonged to a feared security service, rejected the financial compensation offered after their unit was disbanded. Violence broke out at the Directorate of General Intelligence Service office, formerly known as the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) - the powerful security arm of al-Bashir. Masked members of NISS dressed in military uniform set up checkpoints in one of Khartoum’s main residential streets near the headquarters and were seen firing shots into the air, witnesses said. In a televised statement, Information Minister
Faisal Mohamed Saleh said the gunmen were former employees upset at the terms they had been offered upon their dismissal. Authorities had closed Sudan’s airspace for five hours as a precautionary measure after the start of the shooting. The gunmen were angry after being told to either retire or join the notorious Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group. “The events that occurred today are under control,” tweeted Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, a former World Bank economist. “We renew our confidence in the armed forces to contain the situation.” NISS security agents were at the forefront of cracking down on protesters during the nationwide uprising that erupted against alBashir in December 2018. The army deposed al-Bashir four months later and the country’s new authorities pledged to reform NISS - a key demand of the uprising that called for his removal from power. Source: www.aljazeera.com

Israel creates seven ‘nature reserves’ in occupied West Bank
Palestinian Authority says it will file complaints over Israel’s ‘dangerous announcement’ at UN, international courts. Israel’s defence minister has announced the creation of seven nature reserves in the occupied West Bank as part of efforts to maintain Israeli control of the area, saying the move would strengthen Israel and further develop Jewish settlements. The sites are all located in what is known as Area C of the West Bank that includes the strategic Jordan Valley, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in September he planned to annex. Minister of Defense Naftali Bennett, whose right-wing New Right party draws much of its support from Jewish settlers, said last week that the territory belonged to Israel and his goal was to annex it “within a short time”. In his latest move, Bennett said the Israelirun reserves would be “under the responsibility” of Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority. He also announced the expansion of 12 existing West Bank sites managed by the Israeli authority, including Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in caves between 1947 and 1956. According to the Ministry of Defense, it would
be the first time the reserves have expanded since the Oslo Accords in the early 1990s. Bennett is seeking re-election in the March 2 elections, as part of a far-right alliance. The Palestinian Authority (PA) condemned the move, accusing Bennett of “erecting a new colonial umbrella to fight the Palestinian presence in those areas”. Area C makes up 60 percent of the West Bank and is under full Israeli control. The Palestinian foreign ministry said it would lodge complaints about the “dangerous announcement” at the United Nations and in international courts. “The reserves will speed up his appearance before the ICC as a war criminal,” the ministry said in a statement, referring to Bennett.
‘Easier to evict Palestinians’
According to Israeli settlement watchdog Peace Now, the designated reserves total about 5,300 hectares (13,096 acres), some 40 percent of it under private Palestinian ownership. Under Israel laws regulating nature reserves, Palestinians would be forbidden to cultivate their own land, the Peace Now’s Hagit Ofran said. Source: www.aljazeera.com

New study reveals many B.C. residents have too many electronics By:Miriam Halpenny / Castanet A new study from BC Hydro suggests almost threequarters of B.C. residents feel overwhelmed by the amount of electronics they accumulate over the holidays. The survey conducted in the study also found that 13 per cent of residents believe they have more electronics than they need. The research also found that 22 per cent of residents give out electronic presents over the holidays and more than 50 per cent purchased electronics during Boxing Day sales. For those who obtain newer models of cellphones, including the latest iPhones, 16 per cent will keep their older models. Compared to 2010, B.C. residents own 50 per cent more electronics than before. Electricity
used by smaller electronics has almost hit an increase of 150 per cent from the early 1990s. Despite the buzz for new electronics, 77 per cent of residents hold on to retro electronics. Thirty-three per cent of people own a VCR, almost 50 per cent have a cassette or CD player, 13 per cent have a Discman or Walkman, nearly 30 per cent have a SEGA or Nintendo and 66 per cent have a DVD player. Those wanting to get rid of old electronics, especially older model televisions which are known sources of standby power usage, can recycle them at any ReturnIt recycling depots across the province. Ninth earthquake in three days recorded off Canada’s west coast By:Miriam Halpenny / Castanet PORT HARDY, B.C. — Two more earthquakes hit in the waters off Canada’s west coast on Christmas Day. Earthquakes Canada says a magnitude 4.9 earthquake hit 198 kilometres west of Port Hardy, B.C., shortly before 1 p.m. local time.. A smaller earthquake was also recorded at 8:25 a.m. about 153 kilometres west of Port Alice, B.C. Officials say there are no reports of damage and a tsunami is not expected. The pair of quakes comes after a magnitude 6.2
earthquake struck 188 kilometres west of Port Hardy around 7:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Six earthquakes also shook Vancouver Island on Monday, ranging between magnitudes 4.3 and six. Earthquakes Canada has said that the region, centred more than 100 kilometres off northwest Vancouver Island, is a hot spot for tremors of that strength. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 25, 2019. Source:www.vancourier.com
The oldest material on Earth has been found in a meteorite Fifty years ago, a meteorite fell to Earth and landed in Australia, carrying with it a rare sample from interstellar space. A new analysis of the meteorite revealed stardust that formed between five to seven billion years ago. That makes the meteorite and its stardust the oldest solid material ever discovered on Earth. Our sun is around 4.6 billion years old, meaning this stardust existed long before our sun or solar system were even a reality. The stardust found on the meteorite are called presolar grains because they formed before our sun.
Stars are born when gas, dust and heat combine in just the right way. They can exist for millions or even billions of years before dying and expelling their key ingredients into space. This in turn helps new stars to be born, creating a space daisy chain. Meteorites, if they don’t knock into too many things, can act like time capsules of the materials trapped within them, like stardust. That’s why the discovery of the presolar grains is such a rarity -- only 5% of meteorites found on Earth contain them. Their impossibly tiny size is difficult to fathom. Source: www.ctvnews.ca/

Grief & Selfcare
G
By: Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor rief is a somewhat complicated and misunderstood emotion. Yet, grief is something that, unfortunately, we must all experience at some time or other. We will all inevitably experience loss. Whether it is a loss through death, divorce or any other loss, the stages of grieving are somewhat the same. There are five stages of grief. If we get stuck in one stage or the other, the process of grieving is not complete, and cannot be complete. Thus there will be no healing. A person most likely goes through five stages to be well again, to heal. Not everyone goes through the stages at the same time. It is different for each person. You cannot force a person through the stages, they have to go at their own pace, and you may go one step forward then take two steps backward, but this is all part of the process, and individual to each person. The following five stages must be completed for healing to occur: 1-Denial-”this can’t be happening to me”, looking for the former spouse in familiar places, or if it is death, setting the table for the person or acting as if they are still in living there. No crying. Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss. 2-Anger-”why me?” feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with spouse of divorce, for death, anger at the deceased, blaming them for leaving.
3-Bargainingbargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals with the spouse who is leaving, or attempting to make deals with God to stop or change the loss. Begging, wishing and praying for them to come back. 4-Depression-overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, selfpity, mourning loss of person as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future. Feeling lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal. 5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that it takes two to make or break a marriage. Realization that the person is gone (in death) that it is not their fault; they didn’t leave you on purpose. (even in cases of suicide, often the deceased person, was not in their right frame of mind) Finding the good that can come out of the pain of loss, finding comfort and healing. Our goals turn toward personal growth. Stay with fond memories of person. Get help. You will survive. You will heal, even if you cannot believe that now, just know that it is true. To feel pain after loss is normal. It proves that we are alive, human. But we can’t stop living. We have to become stronger, while not shutting off our feelings for the hope of one day being healed and finding love and/or happiness again. Helping others through something we have experienced is a wonderful way to facilitate our healing and bring good out of something tragic. info: shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Why do you get that weird, painful feeling when you hit your funny bone? to your forearm as well as your fourth and fifth fingers and helps stimulate movement in your hand and wrist.
Why does it hurt when you hit it?
Here’s everything you need to know about your funny bone and why it hurts so much to hit it. First off, it’s not a bone
By Vanessa Hrvatin We’re all familiar with that incredibly uncomfortable — and often painful — tingling feeling that comes along with hitting your funny bone. And we all know it’s anything but funny. But what exactly is causing this strange and unwelcomed feeling? Here’s everything you need to know about your funny bone and why it hurts so much to hit it.
What is your funny bone?
Funnily enough, your funny bone isn’t a bone at all. It’s actually the ulnar nerve, which extends from your spine, passing behind the elbow joint and going all the way down to your pinky and ring fingers. This nerve is responsible for giving sensation
There’s a point where the ulnar nerve curves around the elbow joint and is essentially wedged between bone and skin. Specifically, when the nerve reaches the elbow it goes through the cubital tunnel. This is a tunnel of tissue on the inside of the elbow under a bony portion of the humerus (your upper arm bone) called the medial epicondyle. At this specific point, the nerve is not protected by any muscle. The sensation you feel when you hit this precise spot is actually the nerve being pinched and compressed. Hitting your funny bone happens when your elbow is bent rather than extended because the former opens up this small and sensitive area. This temporarily stops the nerve’s connection to the brain and results in that familiar feeling of pain and numbness. The pain follows the nerve’s path and shoots down into your arm and fingers. Because the nerve is also responsible for some hand and wrist movements, it can take a few minutes to get these movements back after whacking your funny bone. And while hitting your funny bone is something you can usually laugh about once the pain subsides, in some instances the pain and discomfort is ongoing. Cubital tunnel syndrome is a condition where the ulnar nerve is stretched or pinched easily and frequently, sometimes for extended periods of time. This condition can develop from reg
ular movements where your elbow is bent, like spending large parts of the day making phone calls and holding your phone to your ear. But it can also be the result of abnormal bone growth in the elbow or from intense physical activity that increases pressure on the nerve (for example, baseball pitchers often have cubital tunnel syndrome). And while the symptoms can be similar to those of hitting your funny bone — although they persist for longer and occur more frequently — some symptoms are more extreme, such as a decreased gripping-ability and difficulty controlling fingers for precise tasks.
Why is it called the funny bone?
It’s not entirely clear how the funny bone got its name, considering it isn’t a bone at all. But there seems to be two main competing theories. The first, is that it’s based on the “funny feeling” you get when you hit your elbow in that not-so-sweet spot. The second, is that it’s a play on words because the ulnar nerve runs along the upper arm bone called the humerus (sounds like “humorous”) that is between your elbow and shoulder. Despite the uncertainty around its name, one thing’s for sure: hitting your funny bone is really not so funny. Source: nationalpost.com

Pakistani Court Overturns Treason Verdict Against Musharraf
Court’s reversal of death sentence against the former military ruler largely hinged on legal technicalities By Saeed Shah and Waqar Gillani ARACHI, Pakistan—A Pakistani court revoked a guilty verdict and death sentence for the country’s last military ruler, suggesting that the country’s powerful army is reasserting itself after a brief spasm of judicial opposition. Pervez Musharraf had been found guilty of treason by a special court late last year following a six-year trial. As army chief, Mr. Musharraf had seized power in 1999 and ruled until 2008. The overturning of the verdict on Monday by the Lahore High Court hinged on legal technicalities over the forma-
K
tion of that special court and came after the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan denounced the court’s finding of treason. The case could now end up in the Supreme Court if democratic activists bring a petition. Last month’s verdict was the first time that a leader behind a coup had been convicted in Pakistan, where the country’s democratic institutions have struggled to assert control over the army. One of the judges, in delivering the December ruling, even wrote that when Mr. Musharraf dies, his body should be dragged through the streets and hanged in the central square of Islamabad for three days, words that drew a rebuke from the military. The special court’s trial was held without the attendance of Mr. Musharraf, who lives in self-imposed exile in Dubai. While it was unlikely he would ever come home to be punished, the ruling had symbolic resonance for many. The reversal of the decision “shows that even in a case as straightforward as this, convicting a former chief of army staff for subversion of the constitution remains a challenge,” said Reema Omer, a legal adviser based in Pakistan to the International Commission of Jurists, a
human-rights organization. The judiciary has usually backed Pakistan’s military establishment through the country’s 73-year history, making its recent judgments against the military all the more notable. The December death sentence came weeks after the Supreme Court in November ruled as illegal the government’s decision to grant another three-year term to the army chief, Gen. Qamar Bajwa. However, the court gave the government time to amend the law to allow the extension. Now, both those rulings have been nullified. Even the two main political opposition parties—which had previously positioned themselves as defenders of the right of civilians to hold levers of power—backed legislation this month that legalized the extension to Gen. Bajwa. Critics of the military say the freedom of media, civil society and the political opposition has been curbed under Gen. Bajwa.
The army denies any political interference. Pakistan is now led by Prime Minister Khan, whose administration says it is in partnership with the armed forces. “All the proceedings have been quashed,” said Ishtiaq A. Khan, a senior government lawyer, Ishtiaq A. Khan, speaking to reporters outside the court. Mr. Khan said that the treason charges were pursued in an illegal way. The government had argued that there was no decision taken by then-government’s cabinet in 2013, as required, to form the special court. Muhammad Azhar Siddique, a lawyer for Mr. Musharraf, said that the ruling meant that the previous verdict held no value as it was found that the court that issued it was illegally constituted. A photo appearing to show former prime minister Nawaz Sharif having breakfast at a restaurant in London has gone viral on social media. he photo prompted a reaction from Federal Minister of Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry, who took the chance to put doubt on the fact that Nawaz Sharif was in London for treatment. The photo also showed Shahbaz Sharif, former finance minister Ishaq Dar, and Hassan Nawaz. Though

Nawaz Sharif is not clearly visible, a person with his back to the camera appears to be him. Other users also shared the picture, with one asking if they served dietary food at the restaurant. Meanwhile, Times of Islamabad has reported Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed Punjab Health Minister Yasmin Rashid to get Nawaz Sharif ’s medical reports. Yasmin Rashid has contacted Nawaz Sharif ’s physician for his medical reports. Source: https://nayadaur.tv/ Punjab Home Dept Receives Latest Medical Report Of Nawaz Sharif According to the sources, hours after the Punjab government raised objections to a medical report attached with an appeal of Nawaz Sharif to extend his bail period, the Home Department received latest second report of the former premier.
The medical report was sent by Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Atta Tarrar which stated that the former prime minister is still unwell. Nawaz suffering from severe cardiac disease Nawaz Sharif is suffering from a severe cardiac disease, his latest medical report by the Royal Brompton Hospital shows. The Royal Brompton Hospital has issued three reports: Rubidium Cardiac PET-CT scan on three pages; Holter Analysis on 16 pages; and Echocardiogram on three pages. Separately, Dr David Lawrence has also issued a medical summary based on reports by the Royal Brompton and Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals. Dr Adnan Khan said that Prof Yasmin Rashid called him and asked for a fresh medical report which was provided duly. “Mr Sharif has been recommended by the doctors to go out for short walks at least twice a day.
He went out with his family on their insistence and as per medical advice but sadly the issue is being politicised.” Dr Adnan Khan explained that Nawaz Sharif ’s disease conditions are further confirmed and endorsed by UK doctors as similarly it was diagnosed initially by doctors appointed by the PTI government, recommending treatment abroad. Parents’ Ultimate Guide to TikTok
By Frannie Ucciferri ith so many social networks to keep track of, it’s not surprising if your kid’s obsession with the TikTok app leaves you scratching your head. So what is it exactly? TikTok is a free social media app that lets you watch, create, and share videos -- often to a soundtrack of the top hits in music -- right from your phone. It was originally available as musical in the U.S. but was rebranded when the two apps merged in August 2018. With more than 100 million users, Tik Tok is incredibly popular, owing in part to its slick mash-up of features from other kid favorites. As with the lip-synching app Dubsmash, users can watch and record videos of themselves lip-synching to popular music and sound bites. As they did on the now-defunct Vine, kids can create short, shareable videos ranging from funny to serious. And just like YouTube, Tik Tok is an interactive world of videos that lets you connect with friends and admirers through likes, comments, and even duets. TikTok even spawns its own celebrities. Back before TikTok acquired musical.ly, overnight sensations like Baby Ariel and Jacob Sartorius gained internet fame on the app, especially with kids and teens. Since then, even more stars have joined the list. But with so much information out there, it can be a challenge for parents to know if it’s really safe. While TikTok videos are mostly harmless, creative fun, there are real concerns about kids using the app. As with any social network, you have to use privacy settings to
limit how much information you and your kids are sharing. Kids can post stuff without reviewing or editing it first. There have even been reports of online predators using the app to target younger users. And in 2019, TikTok paid millions to settle with federal regulators who charged it violated children’s privacy law. What is TikTok? TikTok is a social network for sharing user-generated videos, mostly of people lip-synching to popular songs. It was originally called musical.ly (pronounced MU-zik-lee).
Users can create and upload their own videos where they lip-synch, sing, dance, or just talk. You can also browse and interact with other users’ content, which covers a wide range of topics, songs, and styles. These videos can be grouped by hashtags, which often correspond to challenges or memes. How safe is TikTok? Using any social network can be risky, but it’s possible for kids to safely use the app with adult supervision (and a private account). When you sign up for TikTok, your account is public by default, meaning anyone can see your videos, send you direct messages, and use your location information. Parents should make sure to turn on all privacy settings for accounts kids are using, so only people you know can interact with your videos or message you on the app. That means either opting for a private account or changing the settings for comments, duets, reactions, and messages to “Friends” instead of “Everyone.” You can also
turn those features off completely. How does TikTok work? Tik Tok users sign up with a phone number, an email address, Facebook, or Instagram. Once logged in, you can search popular creators, categories (comedy, animals, sports), and hashtags to find videos. Or you can use your phone contacts or social media followers to find friends already on the app. Many kids on Tik Tok like to create videos, but plenty of people don’t post themselves -- they just use the app to find and follow content creators.
Is TikTok appropriate for kids?
Because of TikTok’s emphasis on popular music, many videos include swearing and sexual lyrics, so it may not be age-appropriate for kids to use on their own. It’s also easy to find people wearing revealing clothing and dancing suggestively, although TikTok won’t let you search for objectionable content such as “sex” or “porn.” If you supervise your kids and stick to songs you already know from the radio, TikTok can be a kid-friendly experience. In 2019, after settling with the Federal Trade Commission for child privacy violations due to all the children under 13 on the site, the developers created a separate section of the app for kids that only allows them to access curated, clean videos: They can’t comment, search, or post their own videos. However, bypassing that section only requires entering a false birthdate. Users can also earn TikTok Reward points by inviting friends to download the app, and
then they can redeem those points for coupons from brands like Sephora and Uber. It’s also possible to spend real money by adding virtual coins to your Wallet. How can I use TikTok with my kids? You can provide a buffer between kids and iffy content by watching with your kids and making videos together. Offer to hold the camera or turn it around to do a selfie duet. You can post it or save it as “private” so only you can see. The app also lets you share videos by email, text, or other social media where you can better control who sees it, so kids can perform for friends and relatives instead of a wider network of people. Is there any way to limit or restrict my kid’s activity on TikTok? In addition to blocked search terms, TikTok also offers Digital Wellbeing features to help limit time spent on the app and limit the appearance of videos that may be inappropriate. To turn these features on, tap the three dots at the top right of your user profile. Then select “Digital Wellbeing” next to the icon of an umbrella. The features are automatically protected by a four-digit pass code so kids can’t turn them off on their own. From there, parents can opt to turn on Screen Time Management, which limits users to two hours on the app per day, and Restricted Mode, which blocks some content. Keep in mind, Restricted Mode isn’t foolproof, and even with the filter on, kids using the app on their own might come across age-inappropriate videos. How can I monitor my kid’s activity on TikTok? Other than Restricted Mode, there’s no way to filter out content on TikTok, so parents are encouraged to share an account with kids under the age of 13. This will let you keep an eye on what your kid is viewing and posting. Parents of older kids who are more resistant to monitoring can ask about their favorite video creators and get to know their videos (with or without your kid). Also, take the time to regularly look at the most popular songs, videos, memes, and challenges.

I must face wrath of Allah if I am telling lie: Shaharyar Afridi
ISLAMABAD (92 News) – State Minister for Narcotics Control Shehryar Afridi and former law minister Rana Sanaullah both has brought Holy Quran in favor of their stance during the debate in National Assembly (NA). Today’s NA session turned into war of words between the minister and opposition leader during the debate and both the sides wanted to prove their stance with a Holy Quran in their hand but PTI’s Syed Fakhar Imam, who presided over today’s session, stopped them. Fakhar Imam admitted that since Sanaullah had been allowed to speak with a Holy Quran in his hand, Afridi should be allowed to do the same, but said that such a tradition should not be set in the parliament. The speaker told Afridi to speak on oath, without holding the Holy Quran but the latter refused. Model Town victims waiting for Rana Sanaullah The minister said that victims of Model Town tragedy are also waiting for Rana Sanaullah. The government and the ministry will not let him run away and will prove that the case against him is based on facts. He said that a decision should be taken in this House today and the reality should be
revealed to the people. Source: https://92newshd.tv ISLAMABAD: The Minister for States and Frontier Regions and Narcotics Control, Shaharyar Afridi, on Tuesday said at the National Assembly that he or Prime Minister Imran Khan did not conspire against Rana Sanaullah, and challenged the PMLN leader to face trial in the drug trafficking case against him in the court like a man if he was speaking the truth. The minister and the PML-N leader came face to face on floor of the National Assembly when the former accepting challenge of the opponent, swore on Almighty Allah and the Holy Quran that neither he nor the prime minister conspired against him. Saying that the government had no intention to implicate Rana Sanaullah in any case, the minister said they have not come to power to target opponents. “We should face wrath of the Almighty Allah if I am telling a lie,” he said. Referring to a previous sitting of the National Assembly when Rana Sanaullah, holding a copy of the Holy Quran, swore that he was innocent, Afridi said that instead of swearing on the Holy Quran, Sanaullah should not use delaying tactics in start of trial and face the court like a man if he is speaking
Rana Sanaullah challenged Minister of State for Narcotics Control Sheharyar Afridi to testify on Quran to prove allegations. Acting Speaker of the National Assembly Syed Fakhar Imam prevented the situation from getting tense and said that there should be no further discussion and decision will not be made on Quran as this matter is in the court.“May God curse me if I have ever been in contact with a heroin dealer or tried to influence on behalf of anyone,” said the PML-N leader. He went on to say that the ANF officials, who arrested him last year, had no idea about the case being prepared against him.Sharing the ordeal of his arrest, Sanaullah said when he asked ANF officials
the reason of his arrest, the reply was that “they have received orders from the seniors”. Sharyar Afridi was given the floor once more when the NA sitting resumed after a short break, “May God curse us if I and Prime Minister Imran Khan have run any conspiracy against Rana Sanaullah,” he added. The Safron minister refused to speak without a copy of the Holy Quran in his hand. The request was denied by PTI’s Syed Fakhar Imam. The speaker told Afridi to speak on oath, without holding the Holy Quran but the latter refused. Imam Fakhar adjourned the session until Wednesday morning after a ruckus in the parliament. truth. The PML-N leader also arrived in the National Assembly hall when the minister was lashing out against him. “I was expecting that you will again bring a copy of the Holy Quran, but you are carrying a file,” Afridi while passing remarks at the Sanaullah said. The minister warned the PML-N leader that the government would not allow him to run away and follow the case taking it to the logical end because it concerns the country. “Rana Sanaullah should come to the House and on next day of hearing on 18th of this month, he will tell the court to start his trial,” he said. In response, the PML-N leader once against pleaded that he was innocent and said Almighty Allah may have his wrath on him if he had involvement in any drug trafficking case or recommended release of any person involved in such practice. Rana Sanaullah reiterated that he had no links with any international gang of drug traffickers, saying as to where are other members of the gang if there were any. “Almighty Allah will do justice between me and you,” he said. Rana Sanaullah said the minister should know that as per law, the trial by the court could start only after the investigation process is completed. He said that not only that investigation was carried out against him,
the personnel of the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), who arrested him, had no idea of any case against him. He challenged the minister that he should also swear while holding a copy of the Holy Quran as he himself did in the previous session. The presiding officer Syed Fakhar Imam allowed the minister to swear with ruling that such practice should not be repeated on floor of the House in the future. During speeches of the minister and Rana Sanaullah, the members from both sides also stood up exchanging harsh remarks with each other. Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan said the country has been put on the path of economic revival due to the concrete steps taken by the government. Responding to a calling attention notice moved by Sabir Hussain Kaim Khani, Ali Muhammad Khan categorically rejected reports that Hyderabad Dry Port is being closed down saying that the dry port caters to the areas of interior Sindh including Larkana, Sukkur and Jacobabad. He said the dry port witnessed an increase of business activity by over 100 percent during the last one year. Source: www.thenews.com.pk
Bangladesh to play two Tests, one ODI and three T20Is in Pakistan
Bangladesh will play two Tests, one ODI and three T20Is in Pakistan - though the matches will be split across three legs. There will be three T20Is played from January 24 to 27, all in Lahore. The first Test will take place in Rawalpindi from February 7 to 11 in the second leg, and Bangladesh will return in April to play a solitary ODI and the second Test, both in Karachi. The Pakistan Super League, also to be
played in Pakistan in its entirety, will be played between the second and third legs of Bangladesh’s tour. After the PSL concludes on March 22, Bangladesh will return to Pakistan to play a solitary ODI, in Karachi on April 3, followed by the second Test of the series, from April 5 to 9. PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani said: “I am pleased that we have amicably achieved a resolution that is in the best interest
of this great sport as well as both the proud cricket playing countries. I also want to thank ICC Chairman Shaskank Manohar for the leadership he provided and ensured the sport continues to grow and thrive in the two countries.” PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan, who also attended Tuesday’s meeting at the ICC headquarters, said: “It is a win-win outcome for both the boards. I am glad that the uncertainty around the series is now over and we can start planning for the smooth delivery of the matches. Bangladesh will visit Pakistan thrice, which should give them the comfort that Pakistan is as safe and secure as any other cricket playing country.” This latest update to the status of the series is, the PCB will hope, the final chapter of a saga that has dragged on for weeks now, with the prospect of the tour believed to be all but killed off after the BCB announced on Sunday it was against government advice to stay on for any more than 6-7 days in Pakistan, which would only be conducive to a T20I series. But the PCB’s announcement the following day that they would continue to have discussions with the BCB on the sidelines of the ICC’s Gov-
ernance Review Committee meeting implied they had not yet given up on a favourable outcome. Manohar having facilitated these talks led to the surprise outcome announced on Tuesday. BCB President Nazmul Hassan said: “I must thank the PCB for understanding our position. We are pleased that a mutually acceptable resolution has been reached and this is a prime example our sincere efforts at respecting the ICC FTP commitments.” Bangladesh had maintained from the start that they were ready to play a limited-overs series in Pakistan, but the PCB was adamant any visit would have to include the two-Test series set in the ICC Test Championship calendar and the Future Tours Programme. The Bangladesh women’s team toured Pakistan for three T20Is and two ODIs in OctoberNovember 2019, with the series going off without incident. That came on the back of the Sri Lankan cricket team touring Karachi for three ODIs and Lahore for three T20Is, before they would return for two Test matches in December 2019, the first Test held in Pakistan since 2009.
