Muslims and Their Media in Canada

A

mong other things, it’s usually noticed that some groups do have a dirty habit of conveniently using the main stream media to promote a negative image of ‘Islam and its followers’ despite the freedom of religion in Canada. According to Malcolm X, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” In fact, the media does have the capability to generate public opinion as intended to satisfy the vested interests. But the problem is the ‘unfriendly attitude’ of the main stream media towards the Muslim community. Also, the competition among the media businesses is in a desperate need of giving the truthful information by being objective and balanced in reporting. On the other hand, biased journalism stemming from the main stream (non-Muslim) media is too injurious to maintain the required balance, as it does nothing but poison the raw minds of the non-Muslims in general against the Muslims in particular. Unfortunately, in some cases, the main stream media appears to be biased towards Muslim when giving misjudgement without in-depth knowledge about the practicality of Islam. Therefore, an inadequate presence of Muslim media adds to fuel further desperation for the Muslims; the presence of mischievous elements in the media threatens the formation of logical public opinion. Some unqualified media persons are more dangerous when attempting to represent the Muslims because of their ignorance, discriminatory attitude or their little knowledge about Islam. They are accused of mis-

interpreting Islamic teachings for their failure to understand the proper context. Beyond doubt, the media through radio, television, newspaper or internet has the capacity of connecting and bridging communities. Specifically, the internet is a gold mine of accessibility enriching the minds of the users positively or negatively – all depending on what you really look for through face book, twitter, blogs, emails, and the list goes on and on. Several communities of different ethnicities have their own media to safeguard their interests. Similarly, the Muslims are looking for a decent way out of the ongoing frustrating situation. They are becoming active more than ever and getting closer to helping the main stream media. Fortunately, the Muslim media of today has genuine encouragement to become more and more assertive with an improved degree of confidence. In other words, they are more involved and getting closer to be competitive even in the commercially focused media market. Better late than never, the Muslims are comfortable to troubleshoot the negative status quo through their own electronic and print media. They are catching up gradually and hopefully would be able to free the Canadian audience of Islamophobia. Misreporting, exaggerating or ignoring coverage for the Muslims did lead to the formation of such independent voice of Muslim community through their own print and electronic media throughout Canada. As the Muslims are legally entitled to proceed in an organized manner to protect their faith, their media too is equally entitled to publish literature to give the true picture to the general

public regardless of ethnicity, coluor or creed. Thank God, a good bi-weekly namely “The Miracle News” is published in Surrey, British Columbia, it serves the local population through its unbiased reporting which is available to consumers and the business community. The fact is media is always bound by a code of ethics to continue as competitive and credible under all circumstances. A successful journalism has to be conscientious, because presenting the distorted facts is unethical and unlawful. In addition to the print media, a daily Muslim presence in the broadcast media and the internet would correct the anti-Islam feelings among the non-Muslim Canadians. Once Muslim media is in full force on daily basis, the Muslim youth would definitely be encouraged to benefit, preserve and strengthen their Islamic identity. Bi Weekly or Weekly News Papers and several other publications by Muslim Students’ Associations. Since, the mainstream media has been unable to address the issues of different communities equally; therefore, a daily basis English Medium Muslim TV, radio including all other publications would only enable all communities to understand what Islam really is! The Muslim community of Canada is fully entitled to enjoy equality and justice when it comes to their unattended or mishandled issues. And, the Canadian non-Muslim community deserves to find out more to re-establish their view point of the great religion of Islam. We can’t tolerate a biased media which is also focused only on commercialization, as it becomes irritating for intelligent audience. Moreover, utilizing Muslim friendly apparatus, pro-Islamic

media advocates may go ahead with repairing the tarnished image of Islam. Regularly airing of the constructive interfaith dialogues can be further fruitful. At least, the Muslim media should go beyond commercialism and give a deep thought about nation building as well. However, the youths of both genders must participate sincerely to promote Muslim businesses through advertising. They should come forward as volunteers to address social issues through writing articles in the local Muslim Newspapers. Surely, they would be contributing for the noble cause through their efforts, so that the Muslim population is facilitated to merge with other Canadian communities with ease and pride. The Muslims deserve to be accepted as politicians, social workers, economists, educationists but at par with all other Canadians. The Muslim business people must actively engage in using the Muslim newspapers for promoting their business through their commercial Ads. Truth is Muslim media with integrity and full Islamic knowledge is better positioned to publish/broadcast for the benefit of all Canadians. Nevertheless, presenting true image of Islam as a religion of peace, tolerance and justice remains a challenge for Muslim media indeed. The bottom line is Muslim media should continue to focus on achieving the goal of nation building based on balanced truthful journalism on merit. However, the good news is this, the BC Muslim Electronic and Print Media Think Tank formed a Canadian Muslim Media Club (CMMC) in 2019 and it has been already Registered in 2020, and Miracle Media is the key member of that club and now it is in action.

PM reaches across divide for advice on economy

ISLAMABAD: As the government grapples with the question of raising additional revenue amid a sharply slowing economy, it has turned to a former PML-N senator, Haroon Akhtar Khan, for assistance in meeting what increasingly appears to be an impossible revenue target. Word of a briefing to the prime minister by Mr Khan trickled out on the same day that news broke of departure of Shabbar Zaidi from the position of chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Well-placed sources in the PM office told Dawn that Mr Khan — a younger brother of Humayun Akhtar Khan, who contested on a PTI seat from Lahore — was invited to

give his thoughts on matters ranging from rising prices to slowing GDP growth. The briefing was attended among others by Adviser to the PM on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood and Planning Minister Asad Umar. Mr Khan reportedly pointed towards policy failures as the contributory factor in the rising food inflation in the country. When contacted for his comment on the briefing, Mr Shaikh downplayed the importance of the meeting. “A lot of meetings like this take place,” he said. “He [Mr Khan] had some good ideas on the economy and is a seasoned hand on revenue matters,” he said but categorically denied talk of any changes in the portfolios. He neither confirmed nor denied that Mr Khan had been offered the portfolio of revenue adviser, which Mr Shaikh currently holds himself. According to sources, Prime Minister Imran Khan also had a one-to-one meeting with Mr Khan. It was during this meeting that he was reportedly offered the position of revenue minister, or adviser. The sources say Mr Khan has asked for a few days to take a decision. Mr Khan served as a revenue minister in the Nawaz Sharif government. One sticking point in the matter is whether he will remain independent and report to the prime minister or work under Mr Shaikh. Source dawn.com

US seeks funds for resuming military Salim Notary training for Pakistan Notary Public

WASHINGTON: The US State Department is seeking funds from Congress to resume its military education and training facilities for Pakistan, says a document released on Tuesday. In its budget requests for the fiscal year 2021, the department sought a total of $104.9 million for its International Military Education and Training (IMET) programme, informing Congress that IMET “serves as an effective means to strengthen military alliances and international coalitions critical to US national security goals and regional stability”. Out of these $104.9 million, the department is seeking $12.7 million for training military officers from the South and Central Asian region, which includes $3.5 million for resuming this facility for Pakistan. The budget proposal notes that IMET programmes in South and Central Asia “support the Indo-Pacific Strategy by focusing on professionalising the defence forces of regional partners, emphasising professional military education, respect for the rule of law, human rights, and civilian

US House panel advances bill to China coronavirus toll exceeds repeal Trump’s travel ban 1,300 as Hubei reports 242 deaths

The House Judiciary Committee voted in favour of advancing a bill that would withdraw Trump’s controversial travel ban. The United States House Judiciary Committee voted on Wednesday to advance a bill that would repeal Donald Trump’s travel ban that targets several Muslim majority countries, and would limit the president from imposing future restrictions based on religion. The House of Representatives panel voted along party lines in favour of advancing the “NO BAN Act”, which was introduced amid widespread outrage over Trump’s travel ban. The measure now moves to the full House. Civil rights groups welcomed the House panel’s move. “Congress took a huge step forward today, sending the message to the president and the country that Muslims and other communities of colour are welcome here. Now that the bill has passed out of committee, we look forward to its swift passage in the House without any further changes,” Mana Waheed, senior legislative and advocacy counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said in a statement. “We must end these bans and prevent presidents from using rank prejudice to discriminate against black and brown people,” Waheed added. The NO Ban Act was introduced in April, and is supported by nearly 250 members of Congress and hundreds of civil rights, faith, national security and community organisations from across the country. It would overturn the travel ban and prevent the president from establishing future restrictions unless the administration provides strong evidence before

Congress. Muslim Advocates, a civil rights organisation based in Washington, DC, said in a statement that “tens of thousands of American Muslims have been cruelly separated from their families by the ban.” “This needless suffering has not made us safer and instead furthers President Trump’s bigoted agenda of excluding Muslims, Africans, immigrants and other people of colour from the story of America,” according to the statement. Trump announced his first travel ban in 2017, without warning, days after taking office. It affected several Muslim majority countries and led to chaos at airports across the country as hundreds of travellers were detained and thousands of previously issued visas to the US were revoked. After lower court rulings invalidated the first two iterations of the ban, the Supreme Court on June 2018 upheld the third version, which applied to citizens of five majority-Muslim nations - Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen - and put restrictions on some travellers from Venezuela and North Korea. Earlier this month, Trump expanded the ban to include some restrictions on six additional countries including, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania. His administration argued these countries failed to meet US security and information-sharing standards. In a tweet, Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal said the travel ban is a “dark moment in our history” and “sets a standard that the president of the United States can target and discriminate against anyone, without consequences”. Even if NO BAN Act passes the Democratic-led House, it has little chance of clearing the Republican-controlled Senate. Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee argued on Wednesday that the bill would limit the president’s ability, saying the measure “effectively eviscerates the ability of the administration to take quick and decisive action to protect our homeland when concerns arise”. Trump campaigned in 2016 on a promise to ban Muslim immigrants and refugees from entering the country, and has made imposing harsher immigration laws a focus of his presidency and his reelection drive for the 2020 election. The toll for Wednesday is the highest reported since the outbreak began and more than twice Tuesday’s figure. Health officials in China’s hard-hit central province of Hubei reported that 242 more people died from the coroanvirus, COVID-19 on Wednesday, pushing the death toll in the country above 1,300. The province’s health commission also repeated a huge jump in new cases, saying a further 14,840 cases had been detected in Hubei, the epicentre of the outbreak, over the 24-hour period to midnight on Wednesday (16:00 GMT). Rights groups slam Trump’s attacks on ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions Trump administration sues two jurisdictions with laws that protect undocumented migrants, sparking outrage Civil rights groups and immigration advocates slammed the Trump administration after it filed a series of lawsuits and issued measures against state and local governments that have enacted “sanctuary” policies. The latest announcement came on Monday when US Attorney General William Barr announced the Justice Department was suing the state of New Jersey and King County, Washington, over immigration policies that offer protections to undocumented immigrants. ”When we are talking about sanctuary cities, we are talking about policies that are designed to allow criminal aliens to escape,” Barr said in a statement. “These policies are not about people who came to our country illegally but have otherwise been peaceful and productive members of society. Their express purpose is to shelter aliens whom local law enforcement has already arrested for other crimes. This is neither lawful nor sensible,” he added. But rights groups say sanctuary policies pro-

tect immigrants’ rights and make communities safer. They also say President Donald Trump’s retaliatory moves are legally problematic and aimed at appealing to his conservative base. ”This is just the latest chapter in a long story of DOJ (Department of Justice) failures. The Department of Justice has already lost repeatedly in its efforts to punish states and cities for exercising choices that the Constitution guarantees them,” Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project told Al Jazeera in an emailed statement............. Another US city passes resolution At least 15 dead as Rohingya boat against India’s citizenship law capsizes in Bay of Bengal After Seattle, resolution by Cambridge city council in Massachusetts asks India to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Cambridge in Massachusetts state has become the second city in the United States after Seattle to pass a resolution against a controversial citizenship law pushed by India’s Hindu nationalist government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Cambridge City Council on Tuesday passed a unanimous resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), calling upon the Indian Parliament to “uphold” the country’s secular constitution by repealing the law and stopping a proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).The US city houses the world-renowned Harvard University and Massachusetts Institutes of Technology. ”It has come to the attention of the city council that on December 11, 2019, the Indian Parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Act, which for the first time uses religion as a criterion for Indian citizenship,” the resolution said. The CAA fast-tracks Indian nationality for non-Muslim minorities from Muslim-majority Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who came to India before 2015. Critics have said it violates India’s secular constitution and have chal-

lenged it in the Supreme Court. The CAA and NRC have triggered fears of marginalisation and disenfranchisement among India’s Muslim minority, who form nearly 15 percent of the country’s 1.3 billion population. The Cambridge resolution declared that “Modi government’s racist and repressive policies” were inconsistent with the values of the city, “which welcomes South Asian communities of all castes and religions”.The Cambridge city council urged its congressional delegation to support legislation in the US Congress censuring India for enacting such policies. The move came a week after Seattle, one of the most powerful city councils in the US, passed a similar resolution, urging India to repeal the CAA and stop the NRC.The two resolutions came ahead of an upcoming visit of US President Donald Trump to India. An overcrowded boat carrying about 138 Rohingya refugees from Bangladeshi camps sank on Tuesday in the Bay of Bengal, leaving at least 15 confirmed dead, mostly women, Bangladeshi officials said. The coast guard, navy divers and other rescuers recovered the bodies after the wooden boat capsized off St. Martin’s Island, the top elected official on the island said.Noor Ahmed said by phone from the scene that 71 refugees on the boat survived. It was unclear how many remained missing. The passengers were enticed by traffickers to board the boat from various points as it headed for Malaysia, he said. Iqbal Hossain, a police superintendent in Cox’s Bazar, said by phone the overcrowding of the boat, which may have also been carrying additional cargo, caused it to capsize. Hossain said the rescue operation was continuing, but could not say exactly how many people were still missing. Nojuma Begum, a 26-year-old Rohingya woman, said she wanted to go to Malaysia to see her fiance. “My marriage has been fixed with a person named Rafiq in Malaysia. I was being taken to Malaysia because he couldn’t come here. I was supposed to go by air. But, several trawlers reached Malaysia by sea, that’s why I boarded one,” she said. Traffickers usually lure refugees by promising a better life overseas. Many past attempts

to travel illegally by boat were thwarted by the coast guard. The United Nations has been working with the government to raise awareness among refugees and local people about the risks they may face at sea. The UN is also supporting the strengthening of law enforcement capacities to counter smuggling and trafficking and protect those most at risk, UN agencies said. More than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fled to Bangladesh from neighbouring Myanmar since August 2017 to escape a harsh crackdown by Myanmar’s military. Myanmar maintains that the minority Rohingya migrated illegally from Bangladesh, even though their families have lived in Myanmar for generations. Nearly all have been denied citizenship since 1982, effectively rendering them stateless. Source dawn.com

Miracle at Hudaybiyyah: Prophet’s Visionary Decision

T

BY: MANSOOR ALAM

he Prophet (PBUH) saw a dream that he was performing ‘Hajj. When he mentioned this to his companions, they (around 1400 of them) gladly agreed to join the Prophet for ‘Umrah. This was the sixth year after Prophet’s migration to Medina. The Prophet (PBUH) and his companions started on this long journey from Medina to Makkah and camped near the town of Hudaybiyyah on the outskirts of Makkah. The Prophet (PBUH) sent an emissary to Quraysh to let them know that they have come just to perform ‘Umrah; that there was no other intention behind this visit; so, the Quraysh should let them do the ‘Umrah peacefully and should not create any hindrance in this pilgrimage. The Prophet (PBUH) did this despite the fact that there was established tradition among the Arabs that people can freely come to perform ‘Umrah or ‘Hajj during the sacred months and they do not have to inform the Quraysh about it. But the Quraysh, instead, sent an army to Hudaybiyyah. The companions of the Prophet (PBUH) told them that we have not come to fight but only to do ‘Umrah peacefully, and return to Medina. The Prophet (PBUH) dispatched Othman (R) to Makkah to tell the Quraysh that they should let the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions perform ‘Umrah peacefully. But then the news spread that the Quraysh had taken Othman (R) into custody. The Prophet (PBUH) told his companions: This is now the moment to renew the agreement with Allah for being a Momin as the Quran clearly spells out: (9:111) – BEHOLD, God has bought of the believers their lives and their possessions, promising them paradise in return [Asad]. Accordingly, the companions gladly started renewing their contract with Allah. Meanwhile the news came that the Quraysh had released Othman (R); and that they are coming to negotiate a treaty with the Prophet (PBUH) and not to start a war.

The Quraysh asked the Prophet (PBUH) to agree to their demands. The gist of the treaty was: The Muslims shall return this year without performing ‘Umrah; that in the coming year, the Prophet (PBUH) may come with his companions; that if a Quraysh’s person comes to Muhammad (i.e., after accepting Islam) without the permission of his guardian, then Muhammad shall return him to them, but if one of the Muhammad’s persons come to the Quraysh, he shall not be returned to Medina. The Prophet (PBUH) accepted the demands of the Quraysh, which is commonly referred to as the Treaty of Hudaibiyyah. If we think about this agreement, it appears to be in favor of Quraysh, but, in reality, it proved that the Prophet (PBUH) was an extraordinary visionary and a great statesman. The agreement – that a Quraysh’s person who goes to Medina must be returned to the Meccans while the Quraysh will not return a Muslim from Medina who comes to Mecca – sounds in favor of the Quraysh but it actually turned out to be in favor of the Prophet (PBUH). Some of the companions even thought that this was a weak agreement executed by the Prophet (PBUH). But history proved that this agreement, in fact, was not weak but it was strong for the Prophet (PBUH) in the long run because it opened the door for further victories.his event happened in year sixth Hijrah. After this the Prophet (PBUH) led the expedition of Khyber and finished the machinations of internal rebellion by the hypocrites of Medina. Then Muslims progressed further and grew stronger and the Prophet (PBUH) gathered an army of ten thousand volunteers in the eighth Hijrah to march on Mecca. When this army reached the outskirts of Mecca, the Meccans surrendered before any fighting. Thus, the treaty of Hudaibi-

yyah became the precursor and a pillar for the victory of Mecca. The Quran says:(48:1) – VERILY, [O Muhammad,] We have laid open before thee a manifest victory. [Asad] A decisive revolution took place after this. When the Prophet (PBUH) went to do Hajj then there were more than hundred thousand Muslims in ‘Arafat. This was a manifest victory for the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions. An incident in the life of the Prophet (PBUH) is quite instructive. The Prophet (PBUH) wanted to do Tawaaf (circumambulation) of Kaaba before he started on his night journey of migration to Medina. He went to Othman Ibn Talha Shaibi and asked him to open the gates of Kaaba but Shaibi refused. The Prophet (PBUH) told Shaibi: You didn’t open the gate, but a time will come when I will have its key in my hand and whomever I will give the key it will remain in his family until the Day of Judgment. Although the Prophet had firm conviction on the truth of his message, but the Meccans used to make fun of him and attach derogatory labels on him – that he was crazy; that he was poet, etc. However, after the manifest victory people saw the result. All the derogatory labels that they used to attach to the Prophet (PBUH) were cast away by the victory and conquest of Mecca. They accepted the fact that he was neither illusionist, nor crazy, nor soothsayer, nor poet. Every success and every victory

provided the proof that all the claims made by the Prophet (PBUH) were true. The elites of Mecca were standing before the Prophet (PBUH) in submission after the victory of Mecca. These were the same people who made the life of the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions a living hell. They did not leave any stone unturned, in order to inflict every possible harm and hardship in the path of the Prophet (PUBH) and his companions. Othman Ibn Talha Shaibi was also standing among the crowd of Quraysh before the Prophet (PBUH). Everyone was waiting eagerly to find out who will be the lucky person whom the Prophet (PBUH) will give the key of Kaaba. The Prophet (PBUH) went to Shaibi and handed over to him the key of Kaaba. The world has seen many victories but where has it seen such a miraculous victory? The Prophet (PBUH) gave the key to Othman Ibn Talha Shaibi and the key is continuing to be in his family because the Prophet (PBUH) said that no one can take it away from his family until the Day of Judgment. Enemies of the Prophet (PBUH) were standing in front of him. He asked them what punishment you deserve. They said: We know you are a just and moral person. So, do justice with us; punish us accordingly. But the Prophet said: (12:92) – No reproach shall be uttered today against you. [Asad] This was not a struggle for acquiring power and authority. This was a struggle for winning hearts and minds. This was an unparalleled victory achieved by exemplary personality and high moral character. This was a victory of Truth over Falsehood:(17:81) – And say: “The truth has now come [to light], and falsehood has withered away: for, behold, all falsehood is bound to wither away!” [Asad] (33:56) – Verily, God and His angels bless the Prophet: [hence,] O you who have attained to faith, bless him and give yourselves up [to his guidance] in utter self-surrender! Trudeau misses deadline for disclosing Pipeline protesters block Freeland from private interests to ethics commissioner Halifax meeting, tell her to call police OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has run afoul of federal ethics rules yet again -- this time missing the deadline for filing a financial disclosure statement with the ethics commissioner. Every MP is required to file a disclosure statement within 60 days of his or her election being published in the Canada Gazette; in Trudeau’s case, the deadline was Jan. 13. Of the 338 MPs elected last October, only 13, including Trudeau, had failed to file their statements as of Feb. 5, the last time commissioner Mario Dion’s office updated a status report on members’ compliance with the disclosure requirement. The Prime Minister’s Office says the failure to file was an administrative oversight that is being corrected. The compliance status report, available on the ethics commissioner’s website, is to be updated again Wednesday. There is no penalty for missing the deadline for filing the statements, in which MPs are supposed to detail their own and family members’ private interests, as a hedge against winding up in a conflict of interest. Trudeau has twice been found to have violat-

ed the Conflict of Interest Act: by accepting a 2016 family vacation on the private Bahamian island owned by the Aga Khan, billionaire spiritual leader of the world’s Ismaili Muslims; and by improperly pressuring his former attorney general, Jody WilsonRaybould, to intervene to stop the criminal prosecution of Montreal engineering giant SNC-Lavalin. Others who had not filed their disclosure statements as of Feb. 5 included Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet, Liberal MPs Wayne Easter and Hedy Fry, and Conservative MPs John Barlow and Arnold Viersen. Trudeau secures Senegal’s vote for UN security council seat during Dakar trip DAKAR, SENEGAL -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called on the world to do more to spread freedom Wednesday, as he visited a museum in Senegal that was once a centre in the African slave trade. But a few hours later, with Senegal’s president, he did not take an opportunity to publicly call out a law that criminalizes homosexual activity. Trudeau was sombre and pensive as he toured the House of Slaves on Goree Island, off the coast of Dakar, where African men, women and children were imprisoned at a final stop in Africa before being forced onto ships and taken across the ocean to lives of enslavement in the west. He said we must admit we have not learned “all the terrible lessons of the past and continue to inflict horrible systemic violence on each other in too many places around the world.“We must pledge ourselves to remember and to act to move beyond this terrible part of our past and build a future in which everyone can live free and full,” he said. Trudeau went from Goree Island to the presidential palace for a meeting with Senegal’s President Macky Sall. The meeting was intended to pursue new education and economic connections but is also part of Trudeau’s bid for Canada to win a seat on the United Nations’ powerful Security Council in June. African support is expected to be pivotal as Canada, Norway and Ireland vie for two available spots. Sall threw his support heavily behind Canada’s bid.“Canada has our support in this election,” Sall said in French, during a joint news

conference with Trudeau after their meeting. He cited the many shared values between the two countries, which have a lengthy relationship as two French-speaking nations. Sall said it is “very easy” to root for Canada and that he would speak with his African counterparts to encourage them to cast their ballots for Canada when UN members vote in June. Moments later, Trudeau was asked if he had raised the issue of LGBTQ rights with Sall. Trudeau said he always talks about human rights but pulled his punches about Senegal’s anti-gay law. “We recognize there is always more work to do everywhere around the world and Canada will be a friend and partner as we move forward, recognizing that in terms of values, in terms of democracy, Senegal is a country that has succeeded tremendously in showing a positive example in many many areas for other countries,” he said. Senegal is considered to be one of the most stable democracies in Africa, with several recent peaceful transfers of power after fair elections......... Source:.ctvnews.ca

TORONTO -- Pipeline protesters linked arms to physically block Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland from entering a meeting at Halifax City Hall.Freeland planned to meet with Halifax Mayor Mike Savage on Wednesday, but a group of protesters standing in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en First Nation in British Columbia blocked the front door of the building.“No thank you, no thank you,” a protester told Freeland, adding that she may need to call the police to remove the group. “This will not happen. This meeting is not happening.” Freeland was eventually able to get into the building and attend the meeting. Protesters across Canada have disrupted travel for several days in a show of solidarity for the Wet’suwet’en Nation, whose hereditary chiefs oppose the construction of a 670-kilometre natural gas pipeline through northern B.C. Clashes began last week between RCMP and protesters in Wet’suwet’en territory after officers began to move in to enforce a court-ordered injunction requiring protesters to stop blocking roads.Blockades around the country have now halted railway service for five days. Via Rail said that 223 trains will have been cancelled by Thursday, affecting at least 34, 200 passengers. In Ontario, a demonstration

in Belleville has blocked train travel on the busy corridors between Toronto and Montreal and Toronto and Ottawa. Service from Toronto to Southwestern Ontario, between Montreal-Ottawa and Montreal-Quebec is unaffected, Via Rail said. Airlines and bus companies have both reported an uptick in travellers. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he recognized the “important democratic right” of peaceful protests and encouraged “all parties to dialogue to resolve this as quickly as possible.”“This is an important part of our democracy in Canada, but we are also a country of the rule of law and we need to make sure those laws are respected,” Trudeau said at a press conference in Senegal on Wednesday. TORONTO -- Another two Canadians are among 39 passengers who tested positive for the new coronavirus, now called COVID-19, on a quarantined cruise ship in Japan. Global Affairs Canada confirmed Wednesday that 10 Canadians aboard the Diamond Princess ship have been diagnosed with the virus that has killed more than 1,100 people worldwide and infected 45,000 others. “There are doctors on board the ship and medical supplies are being restocked to care for passengers during this period,” Global Affairs spokesperson Krystyna Dodds said in a statement. “We are actively monitoring the situation and are in contact with Canadians and their families to provide consular assistance to the extent possible, while respecting the decisions of the Japanese authorities as they manage this public health emergency.” At least 174 passengers have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. An estimated 3,700 people are trapped aboard the ship, which has the largest cluster of positive cases outside China. In total, 255 Canadians are still on the ship, which will remain quarantined in the waters off Yokohama until Feb. 19. Passengers infected with COVID-19 have been removed from the ship and treated at a nearby hospital.Among those quarantined on the ship are Greg and Rosemarie Yerex, a couple from Port Dover, Ont. who admit they’re beginning to get a little stir-crazy but are still in good spirits.“We’re actually doing pretty good. Sun is shining, we’ve got a great view of Mt. Fuji,” Rosemarie told CTV News Channel on Tuesday. “I’m not terribly concerned.” The ship has offered supervised walks on the deck for passengers, but Greg and Rosemarie have opted to remain in their cabin “and just enjoy the fresh air on our balcony instead,” Rose-

marie said.On Monday, another Canadian couple aboard the ship told CTV’s Evan Solomon that “stress levels are starting to rise.” “We can see the ambulances coming and going. Today was especially bad. We had a lot more passengers and crew staff come down with the virus, and they were being removed all day long,” Trudy Clement said on Monday.“There’s three other Canadians that are just above us, and we trade news back and forth … They’re of the same mindset as we are: it’s (that) this is not a good place to be.”Passengers are being confined to their rooms with their meals delivered by staff members wearing masks and gloves. The quarantine began on Feb. 4 and will last two weeks – a time period recommended by the WHO.But bioethicist and University of Toronto professor Kerry Bowman said there are ethical concerns about the Japanese government’s decision to keep passengers on a ship where nearly 200 people have become sick.“Even if the argument could be made they’re not infecting each other, which is becoming a little hard to believe, the psychological and emotional stress, it’s very hard to justify that,” Bowman said. By: Zubair Abid Alhumdulillah, on Saturday, February 8th, 2019, the host, Hafiz Zubair Abid, A student from Darul Qur’an Academy of Canada and Hafiz Zakariya held their first annual Seerah Conference which was named “Darkness to Light”. This conference was solely focused on the life of our beloved and final messenger Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). This conference was held at the Crystal at York Banquet Hall. Master of ceremony for this esteemed and blessed event was Shaykh Anees Wahab, who is also a student of Maulana Zafar Abid, the principal and founder Darul Quran Academy. The program was very well organized and run by the youth of the community. The event began with a recitation of the Holy Quran by one of our esteemed

Huffaz from our community, Hafiz Zakariya Jama, his beautiful recitation mesmerized the crowd of the event. Right after, Shaykh Anees discussed the beauty of reciting the Qur’an. Following this was a speech from the first guest speaker, Shaykh Sadique Pathan from Edmonton, Alberta. Shaykh Sadique’s speech was more focused on the youth, he spoke about the prophetic interactions with youth focusing on how our beloved prophet Muhammad interacted with youth and how he always treated them with utmost respect. After the first speech, Hafiz Zubair, the host of the event spoke for a few minutes, thanking the guests and all the sponsors who had a part in the event followed by a 15-minute break which was given to the guests. As soon as the guests got back, the second speaker,

Mufti Shujaath Ali Nadvi, Imam of Masjid Haqq Vancouver spoke about how the beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH interacted with the non-muslims of his time and gave the crowd advice on how we should deal with non-muslims in our day and time. Thereafter, we had a word from our sponsor Islamic Relief Canada’s representative Hassaan Ghani Shaykh spoke about the projects and goals of Islamic Relief Canada followed by Imam Fawad Kalsi talking about Falcon Travel, a Platinum sponsor. Trudeau to take UN Security Council pitch to Caribbean next week as he continues making his pitch for why Canada should have a seat on the United Nations Security Council. Trudeau’s two-day visit south, starting Monday, comes right on the heels of a week-long voyage shaking hands with leaders in Africa and Europe in an attempt to lock down votes from those countries for the Security Council bid. The scene this time will be the island nation of Barbados, which is playing host to a gathering of leaders from across what is known OTTAWA -- OTTAWA -- Next stop: the as the Caribbean Community, or Caricom, Caribbean. That is where Prime Minister which includes 15 countries as full members Justin Trudeau will be heading next week and five others as associate members.

While Trudeau is expected to talk to Caribbean leaders about climate change, given the region’s particular vulnerabilities to its impacts, the Security Council seat will also figure prominently. Canada, Norway and Ireland are the three countries vying for two seats available to Western European countries as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. Members of the UN will vote in June, with the winners sitting for two-year terms. Canada last sat on the Security Council in 2000, with Stephen Harper’s Conservative government having lost a bid for a seat in 2010. Canada lost partly due to lacklustre

African support. Trudeau spent the past weekend at a summit in Ethiopia, meeting leaders from across Africa, before making a whirlwind visit to Kuwait to visit Canadian troops there and speak with the country’s leader. He will spend time in Senegal before jetting to Germany to attend the annual Munich Security Conference, which will include a number of leaders from Europe. Trudeau has said he is seeking a seat for Canada on the powerful UN Security Council because it is where the world’s most pressing issues are debated. Source:.ctvnews.ca/

New Brunswick’s John Williamson decides against running for Tory leadership

OTTAWA -- Another potential contender for leadership of the federal Conservatives is backing away from the race. John Williamson, a member of Parliament from New Brunswick, says he won’t enter the contest. Williamson is one of several people who began contemplating a run after former interim party leader Rona Ambrose and current MP Pierre Poilievre backed out.

Both are popular in what’s known as the conservative movement -- people active in promoting right-wing ideas through think-tanks, academia or advocacy groups. With his own background at the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Williamson was seen as part of that group and had considered filling a perceived gap left by Ambrose and Poilievre’s decisions not to run.

But in a statement, Williamson said now is not the right time, though he declined to give a specific reason. Candidates for the leadership contest have until Feb. 27 to register and so far only two have met the first entry requirements: Erin O’Toole and Peter MacKay. Source:.ctvnews.ca/

Former Liberal MP Peschisolido ‘chronically’ broke code of conduct: commissioner

OTTAWA -- The federal ethics watchdog says former Liberal MP Joe Peschisolido repeatedly broke the code of conduct for members of Parliament. Ethics commissioner Mario Dion says in a

report that Peschisolido “chronically” failed to disclose his private interests, as required by the code. If Peschisolido was still an MP, Dion says he’d recommend that Parliament impose “appropriate” sanctions. But, since Peschisolido lost his British Columbia seat in last fall’s election, he’s no longer subject to the rules governing the conduct of MPs. Under the code, MPs must file a full, confidential statement of their private interests, and those of their family members, to the ethics commissioner within 60 days of be-

ing elected -- and inform the commissioner within 60 days of any material change in those interests. Dion says Peschisolido failed to disclose a shareholder’s loan and a personal guarantee of debt, both worth “well in excess of $10,000.” He also did not disclose a change in his marital status or a change in the status of his law corporation. “Given Mr. Peschisolido’s chronic failure to comply with the code’s disclosure requirements, there is no doubt in my mind I would have recommended that Parliament impose appropriate sanctions,” Dion writes.

According to Dion, Peschisolido told him focusing on his role as an MP had led him to neglect matters involving his law corporation, which in turn resulted in his failure to make full disclosures. “This prompts me to emphasize how meeting all obligations under the code, including those relating to disclosure, is in fact an integral part of a member’s role,” Dion writes, noting that disclosure “is essential to helping prevent conflicts between public and private interests.” Source:.ctvnews.ca/

Patullo Bridge replacement will mean safer, easier, toll-free commutes for people in Surrey

NEW WESTMINSTER - The contract for the Patullo Bridge replacement has been awarded, creating good jobs and training opportunities for workers who will help build the toll-free crossing to better connect communities in the Lower Mainland. “People in Surrey depend on the Patullo Bridge every day, and upgrades to this important piece

of infrastructure are long overdue,” said Jagrup Brar, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood. “I’m proud that our government has acted quickly on this, getting to work to ensure people in Surrey have a safe, easy, and toll-free commute.” The bridge will be built to allow for potential future expansion to six lanes. The bridge will also have wider lanes and better connections into

Surrey and New Westminster, improving ease of travel on this corridor for locals and commercial vehicles. The design includes dedicated pedestrian and cyclist lanes, separated from traffic, that will improve safety for all road users and encourage active transportation options. Construction will begin in the coming months, and the new bridge is scheduled to open in fall 2023.

Peace, not war, to solve human problems

I

By: Zafar Alam Sarwar, Islamabad, Pakistan n a two-hour interview, the Correspondent of the ‘Daily Worker’ London, A. S. R. Chari, got several points cleared by Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah about Pakistan. How is Pakistan, the Muslims’ demand for freedom? Mr. Jinnah replied: “It is the Muslims’ demand for freedom because Muslims in Pakistan would be able to establish their own real democratic popular government. This government will have the sanction of the mass of the population of Pakistan and will function with the will and sanction of the entire body of people in Pakistan, irrespective of caste, creed or colour.” Will Pakistan have any neighbourly relations with Hindustan (India)? Mr. Jinnah said: “Certainly Pakistan will have neighbourly relations with Hindustan like any other two independent national States. I have said so several times. We will say “Hands off India” to all outsiders. Pakistan will not tolerate any outside design or aggression on this continent. We will observe something like the Monroe Doctrine.”

Asked about the British Government’s attitude to his demand, Mr. Jinnah said: “They have kept us on that line (the United India) for nearly a century. They try to put Hindus and Muslims together artificially and unnaturally. It is impossible.” One is reminded of this 1944 interview in the wake of Indian Prime Minister Modi’s agenda against Muslims in India and Jammu and Kashmir that has been under siege for the last five months. Nobody knows when Modi will come to senses. What surprises the world where democracy prevails and human rights are not violated is the bloody carnage and inhuman treatment of all minorities. Pakistan’s elected Prime Minister Imran Khan has rightly pointed out the brutal policy of Mr. Modi. He is being criticised openly by almost all segments of Indian society. Equally interesting is the socio-economic and political life of our Pak leaders. Asked who is more loyal to motherland? Young citizens say: “We.” Most of politicians most of time think of attaining power in their own interest, “come what may.” Notably, the common man, bearing the brunt of soaring food and energy prices, has realised the need of the hour is national unity in the wake of challenges to country’s integrity and stability. “India has already built a number of dams in violation of the Indus Water Treaty to deprive us of water required for agriculture.” The people from different walks of life, including the youths and poor masses, seem

to have foreseen the perils from the aggressively monopolistic approach of some countries in the region. “One continues to martyr peaceful youth and even children in the forcibly occupied Kashmir? Already alerted by the gruesome activity of American CIA’s Raymond Davis in Lahore sometime back and the secret operation in Abbottabad, the common people have decided to call upon the politicians to become selfless by following the example of the founder of Pakistan.“They must iron out their differences. All political disputes should be settled impartially and faithfully in the national interest.” The common man already has joined hands with armed forces as he did in September 1965 to defend Pakistan by all means. The common man wants to learn, as much as is possible for him, about the army role. One of the prerequisites to discuss, and appreciate critically the role of the armed forces is to look into the reason for achieving Pakistan. This is also essential to dispel a specific impression about military institutions being created by some critics and intellectually immature politicians. Every Pakistani, whether a military officer or a civilian, has in mind that Islam is the most progressive religion of the world, which stands for peace and progress of mankind. It teaches that human welfare is the foundation-stone of the state. The common man is again learning many things for his guidance from the Quran, the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and

the Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. He keeps in mind that the Prophet was a poor orphan boy who rose to the position of an efficient administrator and skilful general. Muhammad (peace be upon him), who touched every department of human life, was saviour of oppressed humanity. The people of the East and the West came to know that he was a far-sighted reformer, a brave soldier, an impartial judge, a great statesman, an affectionate father and indeed a sincere friend in need. Justice and equality were his motto, generosity pervaded his conduct. Simplicity and sincerity, truthfulness and honesty were part and parcel of Prophet Muhammad’s character. He encouraged the common people to turn their attention to trade and agriculture. Such measures contributed to building a national economy. The comrades of Prophet Muhammad followed in the footsteps of their leader who had set an example of serving the mankind and defending the welfare state with all available means and capacity. People’s unity was a foremost source of strength. A galaxy of brilliant soldiers and generals emerged as defenders of the state, who possessed extraordinary courage and capacity, foresight and military skill. It was under the command and leadership of those generals that Muslim soldiers who followed them were able to defeat and destroy the aggressor. They fought to the last for one idea—the idea of existence. info: zasarwar@hotmail.com

Erdogan: Turkey will hit Syrian government forces ‘anywhere’

President Erdogan says Turkey will push Syrian gov’t forces beyond observation posts in Idlib ‘by any means necessary’. Turkey will strike Syrian government forces “anywhere” if one more Turkish soldier is hurt and could use airpower if need be, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said. Addressing the country’s parliament in Ankara on Wednesday, Erdogan said Turkey is determined to push Syrian government forces beyond Turkish observation posts in the northwestern Idlib region by the end of February. ”We will do this by any means necessary, by air or ground,” he said. Turkey has set up 12 observation posts in the last rebel-held stronghold in Syria as part of a 2018 deal with Russia, which backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

This month, it has poured thousands of troops and convoys of military vehicles across the border into Idlib, including tanks, armoured personnel carriers and radar equipment, to bolster its existing military positions. Syrian government attacks have killed 13 Turkish military personnel in Idlib this month, prompting a deadly response from Ankara amid concerns over an escalation of violence in the country’s nearly nineyear war. On Tuesday, Erdogan said the Syrian government will pay a “very heavy price” for attacking Turkish troops in Idlib. Ankara has said it retaliated for both attacks, destroying scores of Syrian targets. Turkish-backed rebels have mobilised to push Syrian government forces out of Idlib, Erdogan said, adding that they must remain

disciplined.“We have given the message that we will act without compromise to those from the opposition groups who act in an undisciplined way and give the regime an excuse to attack,” he said. With backing from Russia, Syrian troops have been on the offensive for weeks in Idlib province and parts of nearby Aleppo, triggering a humanitarian crisis with some 700,000 people fleeing their homes. Hundreds of civilians have also been killed, according to the United Nations. Much of the fighting in the past week has focused on the M5 highway, which links the former economic hub of Aleppo in the north to the capital Damascus in the south. Both Ankara and Moscow agreed in September 2018 to turn Idlib into a so-called

de-escalation zone where acts of aggression are expressly prohibited. The Syrian government and its allies, however, have consistently broken the terms of the ceasefire - including a ceasefire that started on January 12 - launching frequent deadly attacks inside the zone. Source: aljazeera.com

Egypt’s booming population hits 100 million The figure released by the statistics agency shows an increase of seven million since last census results in 2017. Egypt’s fast-growing population has hit 100 million, its statistics agency said on Tuesday, presenting a pressing problem for an already overburdened country with limited resources. The figure is an increase of 7 million since the publication of the last census results in 2017. Egypt’s population has tripled since 1960, with the annual growth rate peaking

in 1987 at nearly 2.8 percent. The North African country retains its position as the most populous Arab nation and Africa’s third most populous country behind Ethiopia and Nigeria. A counter installed atop the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) ticked over into nine digits for the first time, the agency said. A baby is born in Egypt roughly every 17.9 seconds, the statistics body calculated. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly told a

The celebrations mark the day that Shia leader Khomeini returned from exile and overthrew the shah’s last government. The state has appealed for a strong turnout as a show of solidarity after a year in which Iran has been shaken by protests and military tensions with the US. “Securing our country and our region depends on our unity, and participation in this rally is a symbol of this unity,” Hadi Khamenei, the brother of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on state television. Iran’s economy has been battered since US President Donald Trump in 2018 abandoned an international nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions and a stated campaign of

“maximum pressure”. When Iran raised petrol prices in November, nationwide protests erupted and turned violent before security forces put them down amid a near-total internet blackout. Tensions with Washington escalated in early January when a US drone strike killed powerful Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad. Iran retaliated by targeting US forces but then accidentally shot down a Ukrainian airliner, killing all 176 people on board, in a tragedy that sparked anger at home and abroad. This year’s anniversary also comes ahead of crucial parliamentary elections in Iran. The alliance of moderates and reformers that propelled Rouhani to power in 2013 is scrambling to avoid losing its majority in the

cabinet meeting last week that “population growth is the single largest challenge facing the state ... and affects national security”. The vast majority of the country’s population is crammed in urban areas around the Nile, some 7 percent of Egypt’s territory. The lifeline, which Egypt shares with Sudan and Ethiopia, critically provides around 97 percent of Egypt’s water needs. Source: aljazeera.com

PA’s Mahmoud Abbas says Trump plan offers ‘Swiss cheese’ state

Addressing the UN Security Council, Mahmoud Abbas says US proposal ‘annuls the legitimacy of the Palestinian rights’. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has reiterated the Palestinians’ rejection of United States President Donald Trump’s so-called Middle East plan, telling

the United Nations Security Council that the recently unveiled proposal would bring neither peace nor stability and would leave Palestinians with a state resembling “Swiss cheese”.“I have come to you today to reaffirm the Palestinian position that rejects the Israeli-American proposal,” Abbas said in his address on Tuesday, noting that this stance had also been supported by the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union. Abbas called on Trump to return to negotiations based on existing UN resolutions that call for a twostate solution based on pre-1967 borders, and urged the council to hold an international conference to seek a settlement for the long-running conflict. Abbas said the rejection of the plan, which

Trump unveiled alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu late last month, is the result of its “unilateral steps that violate international legitimacy and the Arab peace initiative”. “It annuls the legitimacy of the Palestinian rights, our rights to self-determination, freedom, and independence, in our own state,” he said. “It legitimised what is illegal - settlements and confiscation and annexation of Palestinian land,” he said, referring to Israel’s illegal settlement expansion project in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The plan, the product of three years of effort by Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, envisions a disjointed Palestinian state that turns over key parts of the

larger role in the global economy, the sources said. Oil prices have fallen by more than $11 a barrel this year to $54, alarming producers as the coronavirus - which has killed more than 1,000 people in China - spreads. One OPEC source said Riyadh wanted a quick supply cut to “put a floor under the prices”. “The Saudis want to be proactive and to keep oil prices at $60 a barrel or above,” the source said.Saudi Arabia is OPEC’s biggest producer and has in the past often orchestrated OPEC production cuts or increases to keep oil prices

at a preferred level. But OPEC has not always acted early enough. OPEC was criticised for not preventing oil prices from spiking during a 2008 rally that saw Brent crude top $147 per barrel on supply fears. The group was equally slow to react to the global financial crisis that unfolded and saw demand collapse and oil prices fall towards $30 per barrel. Under the proposal, the Palestinians would have parts of the West Bank and Gaza for their state and a new capital in Abu Dis, a suburb just outside Jerusalem. But the Palestinian Authority wants both occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank to be part of a future state. Saudis fear costly oil price collapse if output cuts delayed

The kingdom has been working to convince fellow OPEC members and their allies that cuts are needed now, say sources. Saudi Arabia wants global oil producers to agree to a quick oil supply cut as China’s coronavirus knocks demand, aware that delays in the past led to costly price collapses, sources familiar with the kingdom’s thinking have told Reuters. Saudi Arabia sees a potentially bigger impact on oil demand this time than during the 2002-03 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic due to China’s now-far-

Your Success

S

By: Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor uccess can be a rather abstract term and it can mean very different to different people. Trying to define what success is not easy. To most people, success means achieving a goal. In order to achieve a goal, a person usually has to work hard and believe in themselves. Being successful at what you do can also be very motivating. People, who are successful in one project, tend to be more successful in other projects. This is because they get the feeling that their hard work pays off and that a goal is worth their time and effort. Success usually goes hand in hand with appreciation. If someone we know succeeds at what he or she does, we will most certainly congratulate them! This will make them feel good and motivate them even further. To some people, success means being the best at what they do. This means, that the

Mr. & Mrs. Carona virus & family

requirements are even higher in order to succeed: just taking part and achieving good results is not enough. This attitude is especially true to sportsmanship. People who always want to be the best are usually more disappointed if they do not achieve their goals. Another truth about success is that it can create envy. If you are good at what you do, others will want to be good at the same thing and if they are not as good as you, they will envy you. This means that success can create a bitter taste because instead of being happy about your achievements, some people will be negative towards you. In this case, it is important not to forget that you have done well and that there are many other people who appreciate what you have done. Just think about it this way: if people envy you, you have done something good. And if you are lucky, the envious people will see your success as a means of motivation for achieving their own goals. Success means more to some people than to others. Some want to be successful by all means while others are satisfied by simply trying and giving their best regardless of the end result. Remember, it’s your own definition - so what does success mean to you! info: shabnam@skcounselling.ca

By: Asma Shums, his deadly virus has taken many lives and is extremely dangerous. We are advanced in science , medicine , technology ,so many medicines of different types and drugs are in the market but at the same time so many diseases are coming up too. There are so many health problems even it is difficult for doctor’s to treat them cure them completely. We try allopathy, homeopathy, home remedies too even some gimmicks too, but still we suffer. Modern advanced infra structure life The world is becoming smarter day by day . The companies are trying to give different products as attractive and bigger and better then other companies, marketing is too high but where is the quality or assurance for safe products . Everywhere we see big fruits, eggs, vegetables, even we see big meat pieces, everything looking big , shiny super , chemically loaded. The Fact The fact is we cannot stop or control this situation much .The population is huge, cutthroat competition, glossy marketing, low morals, and wish to become rich by short cut, the high cost customers can not afford, so on and on many reasons The life is such that we have to adopt to many new things, instruments, technology, machines, techniques and inventions in many fields . The e.g is cell phones ,they are useful too, but overuse is harmful in long runs but it is necessity. The good and bad The good thing is these new technology has made our life more comfortable , more better , even more safer, We have machines like cranes

etc, we have facilities like organ transplants, we have advance medical knowledge to prevent and or check the symptoms of certain diseases, we have lot of researches. We are still same human beings from ages, same body, mostly same mind set but environment is not same. Our life style has changed in many areas, but we still have to eat the same basic food, work and live our life. Our Life has more chemicals then before. We no longer have only locally grown food or pure natural elements, the air is full of electronic waves, rays, atoms and molecules. The simple example is lots of process food items, use of microwave, and cell phones. Some things are necessary evils. Lots of new health problems are there and we check information on any issue on google /UTube/magazines/home remedies or different types of medicines. We cannot turn the clock back and live in simple old times, at least we can simplify things. Preventive or Protective Measures 1. We can take proper sleep/rest/excercise 2. We can try to keep mental peace, positive thoughts & keep calm 3. We can acquire some knowledge work hard for our Careers of Goal of Life 4. We can be alert about health and avoid process as much as can. 5. We can try to have simple and hot meals, salads, instead of microwaved or refrigerated food. 6. We can have healthy habits and teach our children too. The list is endless but we can save ourselves and our family from many viruses and bacteria lead a healthy life. onfo at asmashums@gmail.com

Two Women, Two Inspirations an, read her autobiographical work, quite m e an i ng f u l l y titled “ Disarm Your Limit: The Flight Formula to Lift You to Success and Propel You to the Next Horizon (2015).” By: Mohammad Omar Farooq

Jessica Cox: First licensed armless pilot.

I

n this above picture shows a young woman with a plane behind her. A nice picture. Wait, the woman seems to be armless. Probably a silly Photoshop job. Well, Photoshop is indeed an enormously creative tool to transform a lot of special images, but that would be hardly anything meaningfully special. This picture is special not because of Photoshop, or not even because the young woman (33) is armless. Of course, a life being armless is indeed special and may God bless her for the wonderful smile on her face. But the real reason this woman and the picture are super-special is because this armless woman is a fully licensed pilot. Meet Jessica Cox from Arizona, USA. She is the first licensed armless pilot. Now it sounds special enough. Right? But it gets better. She is armless not because of any accident, but she was born with a rare birth defect. Well, what can courage and resolution do? How can they help a person to accomplish his or her dream? The name Jessica Cox is the answer, for example. Being born as armless not only has not taken away her captivating smile, but also has not deterred in the least from anything she wanted in life. Did I say that she is even more special than being an armless pilot? Well, watch out. She is also the first armless black-belt holder in the American Taekwondo Association. “Using her feet as most people use their hands, she is able, among other things, to drive a car, … to type on a keyboard (25 words per minute), to pump her own gas, and to put in and remove her Contact lenses.” [Link] To learn more about this extraordinary wom-

Now let’s look at this above picture.

Reem Al-Marzouqi designed a car that can be driven without hands. he readers might ask, well, what is special about this? Also, this is picture of a woman in hijab. What is that girl doing with a car behind her? Hopefully, she is not a driver and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where contradicting Islam, women are barred from driving. Only recently, due to the courtesy of a young new all-powerful, unquestioned prince, that right is being gradually granted, a right that was never in conflict with Islam. Well, she is not from Saudi Arabia, and the story is not special because she can or does drive. The issue of hijab is relevant here because there is a growing tension in the West due to Muslim women covering themselves in various degree: Burkini, Burka, Scarf (headcovering), etc. The mayor of Cannes labeled it a “symbol of Islamic extremism.” Prime Minister Manuel Valls claims the burkini symbolizes Islam’s “enslavement of women.” [Chicago Tribune] Well, anyone can think anything he or she wants. But just like how to cover

T

or not to cover is one’s choice and it does not symbolize violence (including violence to any culture), it also is not a limit for those who want to transcend “limits.” Meet Reem Al-Marzouqi (25). She is an Emirati young woman, also an engineer. What makes her special? We know UAE has the tallest this, biggest that, etc. But Reem is the first citizen of the UAE to be granted a patent in the United States of America for designing a car that can be driven without hands. A young hijabi Engineer is granted such a patent. That in itself is special. But her design is for cars to be driven without hands. Without hands? Meaning, armless? Yes. That’s what makes this a related story and an inspiration for all. If Cox symbolizes courage and resolution, Reem symbolizes care and ingenuity.

How are these two stories related?

Inventors/innovators need not just inspiration, but also ideas or problems that they can solve. Reem’s inspiration and source of idea was Jessica Cox. Reem once watched a TV interview on Inside Edition with Jessica Cox. She came to learn that even though Jessica is the world’s first licensed armless pilot, she also had difficulties with driving cars, especially for long distances, using only her feet. Indeed, when attempting to drive car once, the privilege was suspended due to violation in safety rules. Reem was deeply inspired by Jessica’s courage and resolution and her accomplishments, but she was also deeply moved due to Jessica’s limitation in driving cars. Just like it happens with inventors and innovators, something makes bulb light up inside their head. Her care, combined with talent/

ingenuity, moved her to undertake a project so that armless individuals like Jessica could drive as well.

The outcome?

Reem dedicated herself to solve the problem and ultimately came up at the age of 25 her original invention, a “Lower Extremity Vehicle Navigation Control System” for which she was also granted a U.S. patent. “The system uses a steering lever, an acceleration lever and a brake lever which are entirely foot-controlled, allowing people to drive a car without the use of their upper body. The system is the first of its kind ...” I find the two stories deeply inspiring. Jessica Cox shows the humanity that we gracefully accept what we are as a blessing from God and try the best to reach our potential – indeed, sky is the limit in a proverbial sense here, and Reem al-Marzouqi, a young Muslim woman, steps forward to facilitate more freedom to those who are constrained like Jessica Cox. We need to think at the level of humanity and rise above our pettiness and parochialism. Courage and resolution, combined with ingenuity and a little care, can help us push many frontiers, make positive differences to life of others, and make this world a little better place. This also constitutes an essential dimension of the Qur’anic dictum amal as-salihat, generally translated and understood as good, virtuous or righteous deeds, but in essence these deeds are not to be merely self-serving, but positively and affectionately touching other lives. … [T]hose who attain faith and do righteous deeds(‘amilu as-salihat) We shall bring into gardens (Jannah) through which running waters flow, therein to abide beyond the count of time: this is, in truth, God’s promise - and whose word could be truer than God’s? about 165 calories. Enjoy hummus with your favourite raw vegetable sticks; veggies are one of the best things people with diabetes can eat – they contain virtually no carbohydrates, tons of fibre and they generally have very few calories. Choose non-starchy vegetables (e.g. celery, cucumber, carrots, zucchini and peppers) to get the best health benefits.

Avocado toast

Yogurt and berries

Both berries and yogurt are excellent lowcalorie food choices: a 100-gram (half-cup) serving of fresh blueberries contains just 42 calories, and a 170-gram (six-ounce) serving of plain yogurt contains between 100 and 150 calories (depending on the fat content). In addition to being low in calories, both blueberries and yogurt are nutrient-rich foods. Blueberries contain vitamins C and B6, as well as potassium and folate, which are all beneficial for heart health; they’re also high in fibre. Yogurt is a good source of calcium, which supports bone health and growth. Try to opt for plain yogurt, because flavoured yogurts can be a source of additional sugars and carbohydrates.

Almonds

Hummus and vegetables

In addition to being an excellent source of protein and fibre, chickpeas used in hummus are high in iron, folate, phosphorus and B vitamins. A 100-gram (half-cup) serving of hummus contains six grams of fibre and

By: Khadija Nadeem n the society we live in today our youth are faced with many challenges. As our communities develop, the dangers facing our youth develop with it. One of these dangers being the problem of vaping. A vape is an electronic version of a cigarette, originally created to help ease smokers off of cigarettes. This has recently blown up and caught the attention of the youth in our community. Vaping is detrimental for the hu-

Turkey is one of the leanest meats available, and is an excellent snack choice. It contains plenty of protein and a single serving of white turkey meat (50 grams, or two ounces) contains just 190 calories. Besides protein, turkey also contains vitamin B6 and niacin, both of which are essential for the body’s energy production. Prepare a rollup on a whole-grain wrap or slice of bread, with a smear of mustard and a dab of mayonnaise for a low-calorie snack that will give you plenty of energy. For a lower-carb option, you can prepare your roll-up on a large piece of romaine lettuce!

Cottage cheese

Avocado toast is all the rage these days, and for good reason – it’s delicious and nutritious! Avocado has endless health benefits: it’s a source of healthy fat that is low in carbohydrates and high in fibre, and it’s even thought to assist in weight loss. Choose a whole-grain bread (instead of white bread) to get the maximum health benefit from this delicious snack. Portion control is key, though; one medium-sized avocado contains more than 300 calories. So, take half an avocado, mash and spread on toast; seal the remaining half tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for up to one week. Get the recipe here.

Apple slices with nut butter

Almonds are packed with protein, healthy (unsaturated) fats, fibre, magnesium and vitamin E. Some evidence has shown health benefits of almonds; they may cause lowering of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol . Almonds can also help reduce hunger pangs and promote weight loss. A 60-mL (one-quarter cup) serving of whole almonds contains 207 calories, 17 grams of fat and 7.5 grams of protein. Because almonds are calorically dense and high in fats, it is important to exercise portion control with your almond intake. Read also about Nuts and diabetes

a protein-packed snack, grab a hard-boiled egg (or two!) to satisfy your hunger mid-day. You can boil a batch of eggs so that they’re ready when you’re hungry; hard-boiled eggs can be stored in the refrigerator (with the shells still on) for up to one week.

Popcorn

Cottage cheese is considered a fresh cheese, as it does not undergo an aging or ripening process; as a result, it has a very mild flavour compared with aged cheeses. Cottage cheese is made from the curds of pasteurized cow’s milk, and is available with various levels of milk fat (i.e. non-fat, reduced-fat or regular). A 113-gram serving (one-half cup) of 1% milk fat cottage cheese has just 80 calories, and a whopping 28 grams of protein. Cottage cheese is also an excellent source of vitamin B12, calcium and iron. Enjoy a cool, creamy bowl of cottage cheese to satisfy your hunger cravings.

Hard boiled eggs

There’s a reason why the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” is so popular. Apples are very rich in antioxidants, flavonoids and dietary fibre. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer and heart disease. A single medium-sized apple has about 95 calories. Spreading a teaspoon or two of nut butter on your apple – whether it’s peanut, almond or cashew – will give your body a protein and fibre boost.

When air-popped and eaten plain (i.e. skip the oil, butter and salt!), popcorn is a healthy whole grain food that is low in calories (about 30 calories per cup) and high in fibre (about one gram per cup). High-fibre foods take more time to digest than nonfibrous foods, so they keep you fuller longer. Another reason why popcorn is an excellent snack choice is because it’s probably the only snack food that is 100% unprocessed whole grain. In fact, just one serving of popcorn contains more than 70% of your recommended daily whole grain intake. Source: www.diabetescarecommunity.ca/

A single egg has about 70 calories, and contains six grams of protein, zero carbohydrates and no sugar. Egg yolks are a source of choline, a nutrient that promotes normal cell activity, liver function and the transportation of nutrients throughout the body. For

man body, especially the bodies of those at young ages. Studies show that nicotine-containing vape products trigger lung inflammation and damage lung tissue. Long term damage includes the possibility of various chronic lung diseases. Some companies look at Youth Buyers as an advantage and don’t try dissuading their young buyers. Nonetheless, most companies understand that these products are damaging the health of their youth and are taking precautions. For

Tuna is a source of high-quality protein, and contains almost no fat. It also contains all essential amino acids required by the body for growth and maintenance of lean muscle tissue. Canned tuna can be a good source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which may help improve blood vessel function, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Choose solid or chunk tuna packed in broth or water (instead of oil) and spread it on healthy low-salt, whole grain crackers. Because there are concerns that tuna may contain high levels of mercury, Health Canada advises that people should consume no more than 150 grams (about 5 ounces) of tuna per week.

example, restricting access. Most youth are less likely to vape if vaping products aren’t as easy to get. School Districts are also providing “Quit Smoking/Vaping Programs”. These are information sessions that educate Vapers and would-be vapers. As fellow students, classmates are also expected to help their peers. Vapers are more likely to quit if they’re approached by friends than adults. This is a growing problem in our community and is not to be taken lightly, if you get the chance to help a fellow Vaper, take it.

Kashmir Solidarity Day organized by Consulate of Pakistan Vancouver

Consulate of Pakistan in Vancouver organized an event Kashmir Solidarity at a restaurant ‘ Taste of Lahore’ in Surrey on 5 February 2020 The event started with Tilawat Kalam e Pak by Molana Sajid Khan and after recitation of Quran the National Anthems of Pakistan and Azad Jumau Kashmir were played. Messages of the President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan were read by the Vice Consul Ayesha Salim Malik. The event was attended by large number of Pakistanis and Kashmiri community. Mr Furqan Gehlen coordinator Kashmir Committee in Vancouver briefed the audience about Kashmir

committee’s efforts in projecting Kashmir issue at highest level. The Consul General Dr. Mohammad Tariq underlined the importance of the occasion and highlighted the grave human rights violations in occupied Kashmir especially in wake of August 5 action of Government of India and impressed upon community to continue to highlight Kashmir issue at their levels. At the end Molana Sajid Khan made Duaa for all the Kashmiries who are severe suffering in Curfew since August 5, 2019, he also duaa for all Muslim Ummah.

Why Solidarity with the oppressed Kashmiris?

P

akistanis, at home and abroad, have been observing the Kashmir Solidarity Day on 5th February, every year since 1991, to renew the pledge to continue their all-out support to their Kashmiri brethren who are engaged in a peaceful struggle to secure their inalienable right to selfdetermination. The background of the day is that the people of Indian occupied Kashmir intensified their struggle for securing their right to selfdetermination in 1989 and the mass movement gave sleepless nights to the Indian rulers. In a bid to crush this popular movement, India dismissed the government of Farooq Abdullah and appointed Jagmohan Malhotra, who was notorious for his antiMuslim bias, as the Governor of the territory on January 19, 1990.Soon after the appointment of new governor, a reign of terror was unleashed in occupied Kashmir and on the night of January 20, Indian troops molested several women in Srinagar during house raids. As the word about the molestation of the women spread in the morning, thousands of people took to the streets in the city to protest against the brutal action of the troops. The Indian forces opened indiscriminate fire on the protesters in Gaw Kadal area of the city, killing over 50 people and injuring hundreds of others. The massacre caused resentment in Pakistan and the ensuing 5th February was declared as a solidarity day all across the country. Since then, every year, the day is being observed to express oneness with the oppressed people of occupied Kashmir at the state level. On this public holiday in Pakistan, seminars, conferences and demonstrations are organised to highlight important aspects of the Kashmir dispute and the gross human rights abuses being committed by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir. The overseas Pakistanis and Kashmiris arrange special events in world capitals to remind the international community that resolution of the dispute is imperative for ensuring peace in South Asia. This year, the day is being observed in the backdrop of India’s illegal and unconstitutional move of scraping special status of occupied Kashmir and annexing it on August 05, 2019. India put the territory under military siege and internet gag which was continuing even after months when this write-up was written. Factors behind Solidarity There are many legitimate and genuine rea-

sons for the Pakistanis to express solidarity with their oppressed Kashmiri brethren because both share strong bonds in respect of religion, geography, culture, aspirations and economy. The matter of fact is that the Kashmir dispute is considered both by Pakistanis and Kashmiris as an unfinished agenda of the partition of the Indian subcontinent and the liberation struggle of the people of Kashmir as an inseparable part of Pakistan Movement. The number of Kashmiris who migrated to Pakistan from occupied Kashmir since 1947 due to Indian aggression is in hundreds of thousands, which shows emotional attachment of Kashmiri people with Pakistan. Even when India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was asked a question in 1965 about holding of plebiscite in Kashmir, he responded, “Kashmiris would vote to join Pakistan and we would lose it. No Indian government responsible for agreeing to a plebiscite would survive.” Also it was the ideological commonality that prompted the Muslim Conference of Jammu and Kashmir to pass a resolution in its meeting in Srinagar on 19th July 1947, whereby it was declared that Jammu and Kashmir should become a part of Pakistan. This happened about a month before the creation of Pakistan. The attachment of the people of Kashmir with Pakistan is manifest from the fact that the Kashmir Valley has been from time to time, reverberating with the slogans of “Long Live Pakistan” and “We Want Pakistan.” Pakistani flags are hoisted in occupied Kashmir on the national days of the country, whereas such days of India are observed as black days. Pakistan’s Support to Kashmir Cause The leaders of Pakistan have always represented the Kashmiris’ aspirations and never betrayed the faith reposed on them by the Kashmiri people. It was his commitment to the interests of the people of Kashmir that drove father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, to visit Jammu and Kashmir three times before 1947. He had rightly termed Kashmir as the “Jugular Vein” of Pakistan. The incumbent Prime Minister, Imran Khan, since assuming his office in August 2018 has vigorously highlighted at all global fora including the UN General Assembly the plight of the people of occupied Kashmir, particularly post 5th August. The Army Chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, declared “We will fulfill our commitment towards Kashmir till last bul-

let, soldier and breath. Pakistan will go to any extent in support of oppressed Kashmiri people.” Kashmiris’ Revolt and Mass Uprisings New Delhi has exhausted all its resources during the past over seven decades but has miserably failed to intimidate the people of occupied Kashmir into submission and efface their love for Pakistan from their hearts. Since 1989, when the people of occupied Kashmir intensified their freedom struggle, till December 2019, the troops have martyred 95,471 Kashmiris, widowed 22,910 women, orphaned 107,780 children and molested or gang-raped 11,175 Kashmiri women. While the whereabouts of thousands of innocent youth subjected to disappearance in custody remain untraced, the discovery of thousands of mass graves across the territory has raised concerns about their safety. The Kashmiris in thousands hit the streets during mass uprisings in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2016. However, most of the time, Indian troops and police personnel subjected these peaceful demonstrators to excessive use of brute force, killing hundreds of people. Since the mass uprising triggered by the extrajudicial killing of popular youth leader, Burhan Wani, on 8th July in 2016, besides killing hundreds, the troops have caused injuries to more than 28,000 people by firing pellets, bullets and teargas shells on protesters. During this period, more than 10,300 people have suffered pellet injuries and 147 of them have lost their eyesight in both eyes while 215 in one eye. However, all these brutalities have failed to suppress the Kashmiris’ resolve for freedom. India’s 5th August onslaught Modi government has endangered the peace of the region and the entire world by abrogating Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir and annexing it with India on August 5, 2019. After repealing the Article 370, New Delhi put the occupied territory under strict lockdown. Millions of Kashmiris were confined to their homes while thousands were arrested. Continued curfew, restrictions and communications blackout led to humanitarian crisis in occupied Kashmir. The basic motive behind this move has been to bring about a change in the demographic composition of Kashmir by settling Indian citizens in large numbers in the territory. The people of Pakistan showed strong

resentment against this move by holding massive demonstrations across the country. This solidarity shown by them for the Kashmiris has no precedent in Pakistan’s history of over seven decades. The government of Pakistan effectively highlighted the sufferings of the people of occupied Kashmir at every forum by contacting the world leaders. World’s Concern The grim situation of occupied Kashmir following India’s August 5 move forced the UN Security Council for the first time in fifty years to convene a special session to discuss the matter. This move was rejection of India’s claim that Kashmir is its internal matter rather it was vindication of the fact that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationallyrecognised dispute concerning the right to self-determination of Kashmiris. World leaders and organisations including UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, US Lawmakers, European Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch expressed concern over the grave human rights situation. UN Chief Antonio Guterres and US President Donald Trump offered mediation to settle the Kashmir dispute. Even Indian people like opposition leaders, Rahul Gandhi, P Chidambaram, Shashi Tharoor, Priyanka Gandhi, Sitaram Yechuri, D Raja, Sharad Yadav and Manoj Jha, journalists, Barkha Datt and Nirupama Subramanian, as well as Nobel laureate, Dr Amartya Sen, criticised the imposition of continuous restrictions and communication blockade in occupied Kashmir. Conclusion There is no denying the fact that Jammu and Kashmir is a flashpoint as it involves two nuclear-armed arch-rivals, Pakistan and India. The observance of the Kashmir Solidarity Day conveys a clear message to India that it would have to recognize Kashmiris’ right to self-determination as granted by the UN resolutions. It also sends a message to the World Body to fulfill its commitments of holding a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute.. An Interview with Azhar Syed

O

n Miracle’s 19th anniversary, I took the opportunity to speak with a senior board member of Miracle Media Group Inc., Br. Azhar Syed. Throughout the years, Br. Syed has been a voice of reason behind many business decisions. Whenever I have needed advice, I reach out to Br. Syed and he provides sincere guidance every time. For this special edition, I decided to re-introduce him to all our readers. Miracle: Assalamu alaikum, Azhar Sahab. For past few months, you were not feeling well. How are you doing now? Br. Azhar Syed: Alhamdulillah, I am feeling much better and my health is improving too. Miracle: Let’s start with your background, where were you born and where did you get your education? Br. Syed: I was born in Hyderabad (India) in 1931 and completed my education there. Miracle: When did you migrate to Pakistan? Br. Syed: First I migrated from Hyderabad (India) to Dhaka (East Pakistan) in 1952 and then moved to Karachi (West Pakistan) in 1954. Miracle: What work did you do in Karachi? Br. Syed: I worked as a Production Manager for a leading publishing house and advertising agency in Karachi, Pakistan till 1973. Miracle: When did you immigrate to Canada and where did you first land? Br. Syed: My family landed in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1973.

Miracle: After arriving in BC, did you get a job in your profession? Br. Syed: I got a job in my field, but not exactly in my profession. I served as Purchasing Manager for Behnsen Graphic Supplies Ltd. in Vancouver for 18 years before taking early retirement. Miracle: After retirement what did you do to keep yourself engaged? Br. Syed: In 1991 I joined hands with my wife to run a family day-care in Richmond. Then we closed the day-care in 2002 to retire. Miracle: I know you have interest in reading religious books. What do you mostly read - Tafaseer ul Quran, Fiqh etc. . Br. Syed: Yes I have spent much of my time in reading Islamic Studies books and I educated myself in Islam by studying the Qur’an, Hadith, and Seerah of the Prophet by renowned authors, both old and contemporary. Miracle: Now tell us about your social and other activities in the community. Br. Syed: After settling down in Vancouver, I immediately became a member of BCMA, Pakistan Canada Association, MSA (which later became ISNA) and ICNA and got involved in the activities of all these organizations. I spent many years in forging ties between the Muslim community and other communities in Canada. I was a very active member in the BC Muslim Association (BCMA), and its Islamic School. I have worked in almost every committee in the

(Miracle’s Editorial Board Member)

BCMA, especially BC Muslim School and Election committee. In the last four years of my activities in BCMA before I finally retired from community work, I was Vice President of Religious Services of BCMA. I also served as a volunteer community organizer, conference and seminar organizer, educator, and Imam and worked at different levels in various committees of many local and national Muslim organizations such as ICNA, ISNA, HCI (Director for 18 Years), PCA (chair of election committee), and the Islamic co-operative housing corporation. I also focussed a lot of time on Dawah work to non-Muslims and in interfaith work. I am also a registered marriage officer and have performed many nikaahs. Miracle: What do you say about Miracle and what was your interest in joining the Miracle Board? Br. Syed: The Miracle is the first Muslim regular bilingual and biweekly newspaper since 2001 and its quality is improving day by day due to the dedication and hardship of the entire team. My interest to serve the community brought me close to the Miracle and I joined its Editorial Board. My contribution is more on the getup and presentation of the Paper. I also advise on community issues from time to time. The Miracle is serving the community very well and I envision a bright future for the Miracle in the years ahead.

Miracle: What do you say about the BC Muslim Community, and we are nowhere in National politics? Br. Syed: As per my observations of many years, the lack of Unity in the Muslim Community is the major issue, that’s why we can’t stand at one platform in politics. I see that we are not trying hard enough to participate at any platform in the Civic /Provincial or National political arena. I would like to see more participation of the community in all levels of politics, including in rallies and demonstrations for the important issues that affect our community and all of Canada. Miracle: Tell us about your family: Br. Syed: Allhumdulillah, I am married and have three children and five grandchildren. Miracle: Thanks for your time Syed sahib, Allah (swt) give you speedy recovery. Ameen

Pakistan win first Test against Bangladesh by innings and 44 runs

Pakistan on Monday won the first Test against Bangladesh by an innings and 44 runs at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. With the win in less than 90 minutes on day four of the Test, Pakistan secured a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. The second match will be played in

Karachi from April 5-9. Resuming on 126-6 after conceding a first-innings lead of 212, Bangladesh could not make Pakistan bat again and were all out for 168. Yasir Shah (4-58) claimed two of the last four wickets. The onus was on Mominul Haq (41) to try to erase the deficit but the Bangladesh skipper fell lbw to Shaheen Afridi in the very first over of the day. Mominul reviewed the decision but could not get it overturned. Mohammad Abbas trapped Rubel Hossain (five) lbw before Yasir hastened Bangladesh’s collapse. The leg-spinner dismissed Liton Das for 29 and then induced Abu Jayed into a wild slog with Asad Shafiq running back from slip to collect the top edge. On Sunday, teenage paceman Naseem Shah

became the youngest player to record a Test hat trick as Pakistan closed in on victory against the visitors. He finished with 4-26. According to ESPNcricinfo, Shah, who didn’t bowl today, was awarded the Man of the Match. “I had an MRI, I had a muscle pull but the scan is clear. I should be able to resume bowling in two days. Picking up a hat-trick in front of your home crowd is special. They added to the support and festivities. It was great fun. I only hope I will be able to live up to the expectation of fans and teammates,” he was quoted as saying. With the victory, Pakistan gained 60 points in the World Test Championship, taking their tally to 140 points. India lead the nine-team championship table with 360 points followed by Australia (246) and England (146). Top two teams on the championship table will play the final at Lord’s in June 2021. Steps to Overcome Hardship By: Nada Adams

A

person nowad a y s doesn’t have to look to hard to see how our world has changed for the worse. Everywhere you look and on every continent injustice and suffering prevails. Prophet Muhammad foretold about this matter of widespread injustice, disobedience and sinning, that when this happens, prepare for calamities and tribulations to fill the earth. Hardship comes in all forms, whether it’s a loss of one’s job, home, wealth, loved ones, illness, etc. If you are suffering from one, others have suffered from all of those hardships compounded with the pain of loss being unbearable. Out of all the losses here, the loss of one’s health is only second to the loss of a loved one. Illness can strike all of the sudden and in the spiral of uncertainty, here are several suggestions to assist you: 1.What is meant for you will not miss you; what’s not meant for you will never reach you. You must realize that whatever ca-

lamity you are experiencing today, it’s no mistake you have it. There is nothing that you could have done to avoid it. Everything in your life happens by God’s Destiny. Don’t feel despair, God is the Most Merciful and knows about your hardships. It’s your chance to gain even more reward until the relief comes back into your life. The Awliya’ of this nation would be so delighted when God sends them calamities because they know the reward of the hereafter is better than someone giving them a million dollars. 2. Accept your Challenges – this doesn’t

mean that you like it or want it to stay, however, accepting puts you in a state of mind of letting go which releases your need to change things and allows you to see the good around you and in your own life. You are able to see that there is nothing wrong

with the immediate moment of right now and make every minute appreicated. 3. Be Grateful to Allah and appreciative of the innumerable endowments we have been

given. God revealed in the Qur’an that with every hardship there is an ease elsewhere. Be grateful for what God has made easy for you because of your other hardships. Hardships are there to make you a better person if you allow them. Choose patience over anger and trust in God’s Will for you. 4. Be Relentlessly Hopeful – your mindset is crucial for your own mental health and the health of those in your life. Especially around the person who is ill, if you’re the caregiver. I acknowledge the caregivers!! They are the ones who usually suffer in silence. Please make time for you to fill your emotional cup so that you can be strong and continue to help yourself and your loved ones.

5. Wake up in the late night 1 hour before Fajr – make Salat and ask Allah for help. Also make Istighfar (by saying: Rubbigh-Fir-Liy 100-300x). 6. Don’t complain, say AlHamdulillah instead – Gratitude is the highest of emotional energies and the more you are Grateful to Allah for what you have; the more God gives you. 7. Be Relentlessly Patient – Just because you don’t get what you want, when you want it doesn’t mean your prayers will not be answered. Trust in Allah. God has the Power to create this entire universe in less than a second, however God created the entire universe in 6 days that were equivalent to 6000 years. Why? To teach mankind not to be hasty in doing things. With Patience, the relief will most definitely come guaranteed! Not in your timeline but in what Allah has eternally willed to be. Breathe… Of course, this is a deep subject however, I’m confident these lessons when applied will make a difference in- sha’ Allah. One thing that is certain about this life, nothing stays the same! If you are successful, things will change and if you are struggling, things will change…change is inevitable! Put this article on your fridge to remind you everyday.
