Trudeau lauds Payette’s career, says he’ll wait for reviewer’s work in harassment probe
TTAWA -- A week after saying Julie Payette was doing an “excellent job” and would not be immediately replaced as governor general, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau now says he’ll wait for the results of an investigation into the allegations of workplace harassment against Payette. “The governor general has a long and successful role as a scientist, as an astronaut. We have engaged a third party reviewer to follow up on these serious allegations and we will wait for the reviewer to do their work,” Trudeau said, speaking in Toronto on Wed. The ongoing investigation was launched in response to allegations that employees in Payette’s office were subjected to harassment. Trudeau’s comments on Wednesday mark a shift from his remarks to a radio station just one week ago, when he appeared to come to Payette’s defence. At the time, Trudeau said she was doing an “excellent job,” despite the ongoing investigation. Shortly after the prime minister made the comment while appearing on RED FM’s The Harjinder Thind Show in Vancouver last Wednesday, the NDP issued a statement criticizing his stance. “How can he be so sure that Ms. Payette is an ‘excellent’ Governor General and that it’s appropriate for her to remain in her current role without hearing the facts first?” NDP whip Rachel
Blaney said in a statement. “The prime minister appointed Ms. Payette and he has an obligation to show some real leadership, accept the findings of the investigation, and ensure people working in that office are treated with respect and dignity.” Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole was also asked about the issue last Wednesday, but he said it would be inappropriate for him to comment on whether Payette should continue to serve as Governor General. Citing anonymous sources, the CBC reported in July that Payette had belittled and publicly humiliated employees, which drove some to tears and others to quit. Postmedia and the CBC have also reported that hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on renovations at Rideau Hall, the Governor General’s official residence. Ottawa-based Quintet Consulting Corp. has been enlisted to conduct the third-party investigation, the Privy Council Office announced last week, and that investigation is currently underway. Should the prime minister decide he wishes for Payette to step down from the role, he could engage in a conversation in the hopes that she’ll agree to resign. If that doesn’t work, Trudeau’s only option is to call the Queen to request Payette’s dismissal. Source: ctvnews.ca

High alert: Deadly Northwest fires burn hundreds of homes
E
STACADA, ORE. -- Deadly windblown wildfires raging across the Pacific Northwest destroyed hundreds of homes in Oregon, the governor said Wednesday, warning it could be the greatest loss of life and property from wildfire in state history. The blazes from the top of the state to the California border caused highway closures and smoky skies and had firefighers struggling to contain and douse flames fanned by 50 mph (80 kph) wind gusts. Officials in some western Oregon communities gave residents “go now” orders to evacuate, meaning they had minutes to flee their homes. Fires were burning in a large swath of Washington state and Oregon that rarely experiences such intense wildfire activity because of the Pacific Northwest’s cool and wet climate. Flames trapped firefight-
ers and civilians behind fire lines in Oregon and levelled an entire small town in eastern Washington. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown warned that the devastation could be overwhelming from the fires that exploded Monday during a late-summer wind storm. “Everyone must be on high alert,” Brown said. The blazes were thought to be extremely destructive around Medford, in southern Oregon, and near the state capital of Salem. “This could be the greatest loss of human life and property due to wildfire in our state’s history,” the governor said. At least three people were killed in Oregon fires and a small child died in blazes in Washington state. Brown said some communities were substantially damaged, with “hundreds of homes lost. ”Source: arabnews.com

PM underscores need for consensus among provinc- ‘Mastermind’ of militant attacks among es, warns of impending gas shortage five killed in North Waziristan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday underscored the need for consensus among provinces and the federal government on the issue of gas, saying that if the country was falling behind, a province could not progress either. Addressing a seminar on ‘Sustainability, Security and Affordability of Natural Gas Supply in Pakistan’, the premier said that the country could not progress without equitable growth. Talking about the shortage of gas in the country, he highlighted the problems faced by the provinces. “Punjab has a deficit and is facing problems. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa says that it uses very little of the gas it produces,” he said. He expressed hope that the participants of the seminar, led by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Petroleum Nadeem Babar, would reach a consensus. The premier warned that the country was heading towards a gas crisis. “I am alarmed because there will be a problem this winter but an even bigger problem next winter,” he said. His comments came a day after the federal government warned of an impending serious gas shortage, saying that Article 158 of the Constitution that promised priority rights to gas producing provinces was becoming irrelevant and all stakeholders would have to reach a consensus on a workable way forward. “We will be going towards massive (gas) load shedding in the coming days. PESHAWAR: The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Monday confirmed that a mastermind of militant attacks along with four accomplices had been killed during an intelligence operation in North Waziristan tribal district on Sunday. The ISPR said in a statement that 10 notorious terrorists were also arrested during the operation near Mirali. It said the deceased terrorist, Waseem Zakeria, was the mastermind of 30 attacks, including targeted killing of government officials and security forces personnel. The ISPR said Zakeria was also involved in an attack on a military convoy near Hasokhel. He belonged to the Haider Khel area of Mirali sub-division. “Zakeria was mastermind of 30 attacks since 2019 and wanted by law enforcers,” said the statement. Zakeria was also believed to be involved in the assassination of Zubaidullah Khan, a CSP officer of the Federal Information Group, posted as director of the Pakistan Housing Authority in Islamabad. Mr Khan was killed along with two others on the first day of Eid in Mirali in May this year. Gun-
men riding a motorbike killed them when they were coming out of the mosque after offering Eid prayers. The killing of the senior civil officer had raised concerns about the state of security in once-volatile North Waziristan which has seen an uptick in the number of attacks on security forces since the Zarb-i-Azb operation in June 2014. A lawmaker from the tribal district told the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly last week that 200 people had lost lives to targeted killings since February 2018. There was, however, no official corroboration or denial of the claim by the lawmaker. Source: dawn.com

Babar said “the issue of Article 158 of the Constitution had been pending for 10 years and had since been taken over by other ground realities and more serious issues”. Based on demand growth and domestic gas production even if utilised in gas-producing provinces, Sindh would be facing gas shortfall in one and half years, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in two and half years and Balochistan in about three and half years, he said. Addressing the participants at the seminar, the premier said that they should consider national interests. “It is very important that consensus building happens and there is awareness among the masses so they take the right decision,” he said. “When there is no consensus, provinces start Prime Minister Imran feeling like they are being sidelined.” Khan on Saturday unSource: dawn.com veiled a “historic” financial package worth Rs1.1 trillion for Karachi’s transformation that he said will address the chronic municipal and infrastructure issues of the country’s financial hub. Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday filed a review petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) stating that it was not possible for him to surrender in the Al-Azizia reference by September 10 (Thursday) and urged the court to forgo the requirement. The petition was filed by Nawaz’s lawyer Khawaja Haris Ahmed who also submitted the former premier’s latest medical reports signed by Dr David Lawrence, a London-
Last week, the high court had directed Nawaz to appear before the court and surrender to the authorities by September 10 or face legal proceedings for absconding. The bench had issued the directives during the hearing of appeals filed by Nawaz, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law retired captain Mohammad Safdar against their convictions in references filed by the National Accountability Bureau. The former prime minister, his daughter and son-in-law were convicted in the Avenfield properties reference on July 6, 2018. Nawaz was also convicted in the Al-Azizia reference on Dec 24, 2018. In the petition filed today, Nawaz’s lawyer said that the former premier was still unwell. “The fact of the matter is that [Nawaz] is still suffering from multiple co-morbities [and] his treatment in London has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Wednesday urged the federal government and Prime Minister Imran Khan to “come and sit” with the people of the province who have been affected by the recent flooding and torrential rainfall instead of making “five-hour trips”. Addressing a press conference in Mirpurkhas, where hundreds of thousands have been displaced due to monsoon rainfall, Bilawal said: “The prime minister should be seen standing with those citizens affected by the rains.” His comments come a day after the federal cabinet decided against releasing funds directly to the provincial government for the victims of the flood and rain-hit areas. The federal government, instead, will utilise the funds itself. “We cannot give even a penny to Sindh for the flood victims unless we are told about the exact losses,” Information Minister Shibli Faraz had said during a press conference after the cabinet meeting. Bilawal, speaking in Mirpurkhas, urged the
premier to take charge as kaptaan by fulfilling the need for reconstruction, rehabilitation and relief. “We can’t leave our farmers and those affected by the rains helpless like this.” Bilawal stated that recent rains have wreaked havoc in several parts of the country. “In Sindh, rainfall and floods have affected 2.25 million citizens. All of Pakistan will need to unite to deal with this national disaster so that we can provide relief to the people.” Source: dawn.com

N unspoken dispute stalks India’s Congress party. It may define the battle lines for the scattered opposition groups to align against a ferocious but not invincible right-wing assault on democracy. The little discussed problem concerns rival views offered by former prime minister Manmohan Singh and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi about what critically threatens India’s liberal democracy. Singh, during his 10-year rule, had described left-wing extremism as the single largest internal security threat for India. That Prime Minister Modi has embraced the view can be seen from the way leftist intellectuals are being declared Maoists before being sent to rot in prison. Gandhi on the other hand had told a US ambassador years ago, in comments subsequently published by WikiLeaks, that right-wing Hindu extremists posed a truly existential threat to Indian democracy. For this and more, Gandhi has been trolled and abused by the ruling establishment, and less openly by lobbies in his own party. There are two other notable differences between Gandhi and Singh. The younger politician says he doesn’t care if his political career gets destroyed in the quest to save Indian democracy, a sentiment one doesn’t associate with Singh’s ascent to power. It’s a lofty, romantic thought borrowed from popular 16thcentury poet-philosopher Kabir. The verse was adapted in Urdu by Majrooh Sultanpuri and loaned to Pakistan in its struggle for democracy during the Ayub dictatorship. “Jala ke mishal-i-ja’n hum junu’nsifaat chaley/ Jo ghar ko aag lagaae hamaray saath chaley”. (“We’ve
turned our bodies into flames to ford the dark night/ Those eager to self-destruct could win the fight.”) One remembers here that the Congress had given a call during Prime Minister Modi’s first innings to launch a second freedom movement. Where has that call stalled?
Are the opposition in India for a war with China or are they gloating over a stick they may have found to beat a Teflon rival with?
Something else Gandhi said has earned him sneers from the rightwing within and outside his party. Had a Gandhi member been in the saddle in 1992 the Babri Masjid would not be harmed. That’s what Rahul once said without trying to rub in the point that Singh was a lionised member of the Narasimha Rao cabinet that slept through the mosque’s destruction. Rajiv Gandhi had been assassinated the previous year. Between Singh’s and Gandhi’s contentions lies the essential crisis for India at the current dire crossroads. A recent letter from a group of Congress politicians obliquely critical of the Gandhis probably had the support of tycoons who have sworn never to see a Gandhi in the saddle. Their anti-Gandhi sentiment had hardened after Rajiv Gandhi threatened in Mumbai during the 1985 celebrations of the Congress centenary that he would punish the “moneybags riding the backs of the Congress party worker”. His opponents, including those from within his charmed circle of friends, joined hands to tar him instead with the Bofors scandal. WikiLeaks signalled a third element that’s driving cynical politics across the world, not excluding
Indian politics with the advent of Prime Minister Modi in 2014. Erstwhile leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, had been meeting US diplomats routinely to lobby for the Bharatiya Janata Party as the original pro-American group in India. The conversation published by WikiLeaks explains Mr Modi’s current agenda. Jaitley admitted to a cynical expediency, which the BJP had embraced in order to survive and grow. What was that expediency? As tensions with Pakistan had abated under Singh, the BJP was losing traction in its north Indian base. So complained Jaitley to his diplomat friends. In other words, good relations with Pakistan do not suit the BJP. Similarly, he said, in India’s northeast, the talk of Bangladeshi immigrants provided the required oxygen to his party. What Jaitley said then is coming out in bold relief today. As for China being in the cross hairs of the BJP, mostly on behalf of youknow-who, the current narrative since May of troops crossing this stream or occupying that hill is like a tale from the tavern. The White House undid the BJP’s doublespeak on China after then prime minister Vajpayee secretly messaged president Clinton that the Pokhran nuclear tests targeted Beijing. What is less explicable here is the opposition’s stance, led by the Congress. Are they for a war with China or are they gloating over a stick they may have found to beat a Teflon rival with? Both are unworkable in the absence of ideological clarity. The Lok Sabha monsoon session starting on Thursday presents an opportunity to draw the battle lines with clarity.
There is needless pessimism over the challenge that Modi presents. Public memory is short. The Bihar assembly, going to polls this year, was not won but grabbed from the opposition by subverting an alliance. Was that popular appeal or desperation? The BJP did not win Goa, or Madhya Pradesh or Manipur in a democratic contest. For a party that came to power by raising middle class hopes against corruption, the BJP stands accused in Maharashtra and Rajasthan with attempting to gain power through horse-trading. If the media therefore desperately projects Modi as an invincible leader, why should the opposition fall for it? There’s a truly imposing challenge, however, and it’s within the opposition parties, chiefly with their self-absorbed leaders. This is where the left parties come be handy with their experience of cobbling steady coalitions. However, for all this to happen, the left needs to stop seeing itself as a victim in West Bengal and Mamata Banerjee as the immediate threat. The left and the Congress, ideologically revived under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, need to sort out their differences in Kerala. The BJP covets both opposition-ruled states, and both face polls next year. Ordinary Indians have shrewdly accepted what was unthinkable until recently — the need for bedtime prayers for the far-right Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra to not get toppled. Some would call it opportunism. Others may see it as ideological clarity. Both are needed for the fight at hand. The writer is Dawn’s correspondent in Delhi. Courtesy By: Jawed Naqvi
‘Black Lives Matters’!
By: Gulshan Aalani
O
f course! Who can deny it? Only those who are not aware of the truth and reality of the Divine order and have no idea who are the Black people. Black, Brown or White, every life matter as they all have one thing in common: they all have one Father, One Creator. They are the Siblings with different colors, like a colorful ‘Rainbow’, intertwined ‘One community’. Moreover, they are the tribes of patriarch Prophet Abraham/Abram (AS), “father of many nations”. Who is appointed to be the blessings to the whole earth: “he would receive a good land with many Children”, and Allah promised him: “I will bless those who bless you and him who dishonors you ‘I’ will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed”. His ‘family’ includes, his 1st born Son Prophet Ishmael (AS), P. Isaac (AS), P. Israel/Jacob/ (AS). That’s why their Creator has forbidden to kill each other. Yet, the hatred of each other is increasing that is evident in recent killings of Black people for no good reasons. Even if there was a good reason no authority has permission to take the law in its own hands, shoot nor kill. The guilty one should be tried in the Court with legal procedure. Isn’t it true: “Innocent until proven guilty”. It is most sorrowful to hear the words from Black persons: “We are scared, we are terrified”:
“With Clinched Fist we are clinched together”, said the distort father of Jacob Blake who is lying in the Hospital badly injured by the 7 Gun shots. May Allah-Creator make him well soon. Such racism of hatred of certain people is the most heinous crime that has dire consequences. Evidently, we need to eradicate the ill of society that also hates Muslims, Islam the religion of Creator, Aboriginal, Indigenous, Dalits, Kashmiris, and Uighur Muslims; such hatred has to stop, as it leads to the wrath of Creator-GOD, which is already proven according to the prophecies of the trials and tribulations of Nature’s disasters, manmade disasters, World-Wide disease, Pandemic of Corona VirusCovid19, number 19 mentioned in the Quran for which I have my own theory, as well Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn has his own interesting theory of #19. Such calamities of tragedies are destroying the towns and human habitants. Speaking up against any wrong doing is every human’s duty, like our brethren Jewish named Andrew with his team protesting against the atrocities of Chinese Uighur Muslims; Kudos to him. However, once we know the shocking true ID of Black people the hatred will turn into love, respect, sympathy, empathy, and the time of repentance will be most needed out of fear of GOD’S command: “I will bless those who bless you, and him

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term “Haya” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith.”
History of Imam Husain And His Martyrdom
By: Abdullah Yusuf Ali
Continued from last edition
P
resently messengers came from Kufa, and Imam Husain was asked to surrender. Imam Husain offered to take one of three alternatives. He wanted no political power and no revenge. He said “I came to defend my own people. If I am too late, give me the choice of three alternatives: either to return to Mecca; or to face Yazid himself at Damascus; or if my very presence is distasteful to him and you, I do not wish to cause more divisions among the Muslims. Let me at least go to a distant frontier, where, if fighting must be done, I will fight against the enemies of Islam.” Every one of these alternatives was refused. What they wanted was to destroy his life, or better still, to get him to surrender, to surrender to the very forces against which he was protesting, to declare his adherence to those who were defying the law of God and man, and to tolerate all the abuses which were bringing the name of Islam into disgrace. Of course he did not surrender. But what was he to do? He had no army. He had reasons to suppose that many of his friends from distant parts would rally round him, and come and defend him with their swords and bodies. But time was necessary, and he was not going to gain time by feigned compliance. He turned a little round to the left, the way that would have led him to Yazid himself, at Damascus. He camped in the plain of Kerbela.
Water cut off; Inflexible will, Devotion and Chivalry
For ten days messages passed backwards and forwards between Kerbela and Kufa. Kufa wanted surrender and recognition. That was the one thing the Imam could not consent to. Every other alternative was refused by Kufa, under the instructions from Damascus. Those fateful ten days were the first ten days of the month of Muharram, of the year 61 of the Hijra. The final crisis was on the 10th day, the Ashura day, which we are commemorating. During the first seven days various kinds of pressure were brought
to bear on the Imam, but his will was inflexible. It was not a question of a fight, for there were but 70 men against 4,000. The little band was surrounded and insulted, but they held together so firmly that they could not be harmed. On the 8th day the water supply was cut off. The Euphrates and its abundant streams were within sight, but the way was barred. Prodigies of valor were performed in getting water. Challenges were made for single combat according to Arab custom. And the enemy were halfhearted, while the Imam’s men fought in contempt of death, and always accounted for more men than they lost. On the evening of the 9th day, the little son of the Imam was ill. He had fever and was dying of thirst. They tried to get a drop of water. But that was refused point blank and so they made the resolve that they would, rather than surrender, die to the last man in the cause for which they had come. Imam Husain offered to send away his people. He said, “They are after my person; my family and my people can go back.” But everyone refused to go. They said they would stand by him to the last, and they did. They were not cowards; they were soldiers born and bred; and they fought as heroes, with devotion and with chivalry.
The Final Agony; placid face of the man of God
On the day of Ashura, the 10th day, Imam Husain’s own person was surrounded by his enemies. He was brave to the last. He was cruelly mutilated. His sacred head was cut off while in the act of prayer. A mad orgy of triumph was celebrated over his body. In this crisis we have details of what took place hour by hour. He had 45 wounds from the enemies’ swords and javelins, and 35 arrows pierced his body. His left arm was cut off, and a javelin pierced through his breast. After all that agony, when his head was lifted up on a spear, his face was the placid face of a man of God. All the men of that gallant band were exterminated and their bodies trampled under foot by the horses. The only male survivor was a child, Husain’s son Ali, surnamed Zain-ul-’Abidin - “The Glory of the Devout.” He lived in retirement, studying, interpreting, and teaching his father’s high spiritual principles for the rest of his life.
Heroism of the Women
There were women: for example, Zainab the sister of the Imam, Sakina his little daughter, and Shahr-i-Banu, his wife, at Kerbela.
Respect for the Truth
A great deal of poetic literature has sprung up in Muslim languages, describing the touching scenes in which they figure. Even in their grief and their tears they are heroic. They lament the tragedy in simple, loving, human terms. But they are also conscious of the noble dignity of their nearness to a life of truth reaching its goal in the precious crown of martyrdom. One of the best-known poets of this kind is the Urdu poet Anis, who lived in Lucknow, and died in 1874.
Lesson of the Tragedy
That briefly is the story. What is the lesson? There is of course the physical suffering in martyrdom, and all sorrow and suffering claim our sympathy, - the dearest, purest, most out-flowing sympathy that we can give. But there is a greater suffering than physical suffering. That is when a valiant soul seems to stand against the world; when the noblest motives are reviled and mocked; when truth seems to suffer an eclipse. It may even seem that the martyr has but to say a word of compliance, do a little deed of nonresistance; and much sorrow and suffering would be saved; and the insidious whisper comes: “Truth after all can never die.” That is perfectly true. Abstract truth can never die. It is independent of man’s cognition. But the whole battle is for man’s keeping hold of truth and righteousness. And that can only be done by the highest examples of man’s conduct - spiritual striving and suffering enduring firmness of faith and purpose, patience and courage where ordinary mortals would give in or be cowed down, the sacrifice of ordinary motives to supreme truth in scorn of consequence. The martyr bears witness, and the witness redeems what would otherwise be called failure. It so happened with Husain. Explorers of Spiritual Territory
That, to my mind, is the supreme significance of martyrdom. All human history shows that the human spirit strives in many directions, deriving strength and sustenance from many sources. Our bodies, our physical powers, have developed or evolved from earlier forms, after many struggles and defeats. Our intellect has had its martyrs, and our great explorers have often gone forth with the martyrs’ spirit. All honor to them. But the highest honor must still lie with the great explorers of spiritual territory, those who faced fearful odds and refused to surrender to evil. Rather than allow a stigma to attach to sacred things, they paid with their own lives the penalty of resistance. The first kind of resistance offered by the Imam was when he went from city to city, hunted about from place to place, but making no compromise with evil. Then was offered the choice of an effectual but dangerous attempt at clearing the house of God, or living at ease for himself by tacit abandonment of his striving friends. He chose the path of danger with duty and honor, and never swerved from it giving up his life freely and bravely. His story purifies our emotions. We can best honor his memory by allowing it to teach us courage and constancy. Abdullah Yusuf Ali is a renowned English translator and commentator of the Holy Qur’an. He died in 1952 in England. Little would he have known that his English translation and commentary of the Qur’an would become so popular in the West and East alike, wherever English is read and understood. Coronavirus ‘emergency’ puts Jakarta back in lockdown:
Governor of Indonesian capital says tough measures needed because surge in cases is pushing health system to collapse. Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan says the Indonesian capital will head back into lockdown as it steps up efforts to tackle what he said was an “emergency - more pressing than the start of the pandemic.” From Monday, all offices will be closed except for businesses in 11 “essential” fields. Entertainment venues will be shut down and all gatherings banned. Religious events will only be allowed at the village level for people who live in the area, he added. Baswedan said the measures were necessary because modelling showed the capital’s hos-

know, grab hands and shake hands,” Biden recently told supporters. “You can’t do that now.”With less than eight weeks until the November 3 election, Trump and Biden are taking diametrically opposite approaches to campaigning amid a pandemic - and the differences amount to more than political theatre. The candidates are effectively staking out different visions for the country. Biden emphasises guidelines supported by local health officials, while Trump rails against re-
strictions that he argues, without evidence, are politically motivated. “By the way, your state should be open,” the president said in North Carolina, where he has feuded with Democratic Governor Roy Cooper over Trump’s abandoned plans to hold the Republican National Convention in Charlotte.“It’s you, it’s Michigan, it’s a couple others,” Trump added, as he sees a line of attack in pivotal states run by Democrats. A roadside bomb in Kabul targeted First Afghan Vice President Amrullah Saleh on Wednesday morning, but he escaped unharmed, his spokesman said. The blast killed at least four people and wounded 16, a health ministry spokesman said, including some of Saleh’s bodyguards. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which comes just ahead of long-awaited peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban in Qatar’s capital of Doha. “Today, once again the enemy of Afghanistan tried to harm Saleh, but they failed in their evil aim, and Saleh escaped the attack unharmed,” Razwan Murad, a spokes-
man for Saleh’s office, wrote on Facebook. He told Reuters the bomb targeted Saleh’s convoy and some of his bodyguards were injured. Saleh, a former intelligence chief, has survived several assassination attempts, including one on his office last year that killed 20 people. Officials and diplomats have warned that rising violence is sapping trust needed for the success of talks aimed at ending an insurgency that began when the Taliban was ousted from power in Kabul by US-back forces in late 2001. He basked in a largely mask-less crowd of several thousand supporters during a campaign rally in the state, which is set to be critical to the upcoming US election. “As far as the eye can see,” Trump said, revelling at the sight of people flouting public health guidelines at Tuesday’s event. “I really believe that these crowds are bigger than they were four years ago.” A day earlier in Pennsylvania, Trump’s Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, held a meeting in a backyard ensuring social distancing. His team has been so attentive to local regulations that some staffers have left the room if they risked breaking the rules on crowd limits. “I really miss being able to, you
China says Indian forces crossed border, fired warning shots BEIJING -- China said Indian forces crossed into territory it holds along their disputed border and fired warning shots at a Chinese patrol in a move it called a “serious military provocation” and a violation of their agreements. The nuclear-armed rivals have been engaged in a tense standoff in the colddesert Ladakh region since May, and their defence ministers met Friday in Moscow in the first high-level direct contact between the sides since the standoff began. China’s western military command said the incursion occurred Monday along the southern coast of Pangong Lake in the area known in Chinese as Shenpaoshan. On the Indian side, the area is known as Chushul where the two countries local military commanders have held several rounds of talks to defuse the tense standoff. After shots were fired, Chinese forces took “necessary measures to stabilize and control the situation,” the command said, in the statement citing spokesman Zhang Shuili. It demanded the
Indian forces withdraw and investigate the move to open fire. There was no word of casualties on either side. Late last month, India says its soldiers thwarted the Chinese military’s moves “to change the status quo” in violation of a consensus reached in past efforts to settle the standoff. In turn, China also accused Indian troops of crossing established lines of control. Source: ctvnews.ca
Respect for the Truth Continued from page 5
Nowadays, you hear much circulated news and read much content online, and you notice that a great part of such content is of unknown origin, some of its writ-
ers use pseudonyms, and the chains of transmission of most narratives that we hear are unknown. All this urges us not to rush into believing everything we hear and hasten to convey it and post it so as not to become accomplices in circulating fake and unfounded news, and you know what Allah, The Exalted, Says in this regard; He Says (what means): {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a wicked person with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.} [Quran 49:6] {O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allah , investigate; and do not say to one who

gives you [a greeting of] peace, “You are not a believer,” aspiring for the goods of worldly life...} [Quran 4:94] The second verse is a divine directive for the believers during wartime not to hasten the killing before it becomes clear to them who is a believer and who is not. What does this mean for my daughters and sons? It means the following: 1- Train yourselves not to believe everything you hear, start questioning the authenticity of the information that reaches you, and judge for yourself. Train yourselves as well to convey less of what you hear; the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: “It is enough lying for a man to transmit everything he hears.” 2- Always look for the source of the information that you hear, try to identify the people transmitting it, and verify their credibility and trustworthiness. 3- The authenticity of what you watch is often greater and stronger than the authenticity of what you hear. Also, the
longer the chain of narrators and transmitters of the information is, the greater the possibility of error and misunderstanding. 4- Countless experiences and incidents prove that oral transmission tends to be less accurate as narrators add to the orally transmitted messages according to their own understanding, moods, and personal whims. Therefore, do not accept the narrations you hear to the letter, and do not trust all their details. 5- Whenever the information sounds odd and unfamiliar, we should stop and investigate it further because much of such information is often incorrect or exaggerated. 6- The exact magnitude of a matter and the extent to which it is true or false can only be known after it ends, and therefore, you should wait before issuing judgment until the speaker completes his statement and the writer concludes his work, which he might publish in several parts. Learn the lessons of history, don’t ‘cancel’ them, new Tory leader O’Toole says
OTTAWA -- New Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole said Wednesday that plaques, not protests, should grace the fronts of historical sites and monuments that reflect controversial moments in Canadian history. O’Toole told his party’s MPs and senators gathered for their first meeting under his leadership that those who are tearing down the statues of the country’s founders are dooming Canada to forget the lessons of history. The caucus was gathered in Ottawa Wednesday but scattered throughout the downtown. O’Toole himself was at the federal government’s Sir John A. Macdonald building for his remarks. In recent weeks,
statues of Canada’s first prime minister have been toppled or defaced in protests against systemic racism and Canada’s colonialist history. O’Toole noted that Sen. Murray Sinclair, who led the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into the residential school system into which many Indigenous children were forced, has suggested instead that plaques be placed alongside such monuments to provide a more balanced look at history. O’Toole said he supports that approach. He contrasted Macdonald’s legacy with that of Louis Riel, the Metis leader Macdonald saw hanged for treason, but who was also considered by some a hero.
Their story serves as a warning for modernday politicians, O’Toole suggested. “Theirs is a story of what happens when Canada is divided,” he said. “When Western alienation takes root and people feel ignored by a distant government in Ottawa who does not try to understand the fears and desires of people thousands of kilometres away.” With his party dominating much of Western Canada, O’Toole has taken up addressing feelings of alienation in the region as one of his priorities as leader. He pledged Wednesday that his party will be a unifying force in the country and urged his MPs and in the Royal Canadian Air Force: through senators to embrace a motto from his days adversity to the stars. Broadway Subway contract continues NDP insider handouts
VANCOUVER (September 3, 2020) – John Horgan confirmed today that, in the middle of a pandemic with countless British Columbians out of work, jobs on the Broadway Subway project will be limited through the NDP’s Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) scheme to only members of the 19 hand-picked unions that have historically donated to NDP campaigns. “While this transit expansion is good news for Vancouver, the issue remains that by continuing to utilize union benefits agreements, this NDP government is only giving
Plan seeks to minimize impact of B.C.’s influenza season and boost capacity to track COVID-19 B.C. has released details of how it plans to manage COVID-19 and influenza cases in the fall and winter months and prevent a combination of the two from straining the
more to the cost of public infrastructure projects, which equates to nearly $4,000 for every family in the province. CBAs result in fewer competing bids and higher project costs while freezing out nearly 80 per cent of B.C.’s construction sector. “The Broadway Subway project is yet another example of the NDP’s insiders-only union kickback program, the Community Benefits Agreement, which have added hundreds of million of dollars more to the cost of public projects since its implementation,” added Hunt. “The unions and workers who aren’t on the NDP’s VIP list make up more than 80 per cent of the construction sector, and many of them are currently out of work. During the best of times CBA’s fail to provide for fair and equitable employment, but during COVID-19 and an economic slow-
down, shutting these people out is unconscionable. John Horgan and the NDP need to be working for everyone in B.C., not just their friends and donors.” Due to CBAs, the Illicillewaet and Kicking Horse Canyon highway expansions have seen cost overruns of 143 per cent and 33 per cent respectively, costing taxpayers $200 million more than when those projects were first announced by the BC Liberals. The NDP have also estimated that under their CBA scheme, the Pattullo Bridge expansion will cost a minimum of $100 million additional taxpayer dollars. The provincial deficit announced earlier this week, which stemmed from the NDP’s pre-pandemic taxes and spending, will now grow even greater as a result of additional CBA costs. province’s health-care system. A key part of the strategy, announced on Wednesday by Premier John Horgan, Health Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, involves reducing the usual demand for hospital beds by reducing seasonal flu cases, while boosting hospital surge capacity if there is a sudden influx of patients. The plan will inject $1.6 billion into the health-care system and involve the strategic hiring and training of 7,000 health-care workers. It aims to avoid a scenario where surgeries must be widely delayed, as the province did in the spring as part of its emergency
response to the pandemic. It will also be launching a major vaccination campaign against influenza, with the goal of vaccinating nearly two million people, compared to the yearly average of around 1.4 million. ”Our pandemic plan has been working,’’ said Horgan. “We need to accelerate. We need to up our game.’’ Vaccination on a scale ‘not yet seen’ Henry said B.C.’s vaccination strategy will be on a scale “not yet seen” and encouraged everyone in the province over the age of six months to get vaccinated against influenza. She said the province has been tracking COVID-19 cases in the southern hemi-
sphere, which is just coming out of its influenza season. Influenza season in the northern hemisphere usually starts in October and November, peaking in December and January. “The good news is that their immunization rates were very high. This triggered us to buy more vaccine here,” she said, adding that measures like physical distancing, masks, and handwashing also protect against influenza. The plan also focuses on boosting the capacity to conduct contact tracing and COVID-19 testing, with the goal of being able to test 20,000 people per day, compared to the current capacity of around 8,000 to 10,000 tests.

Is your child going back to school? Canadians concerned about deficit, split on ability to rebuild economy: Nanos survey Here’s what to ask about COVID-19 safety feds’ TORONTO -- Most Canadians are con-
TORONTO -- From the ventilation in schools to how often doorknobs are cleaned, parents are brimming with questions as their children return to the classroom. Safety professional Lee-Anne Lyon-Bartley -- affectionately known as the ‘Safety Diva’ -- told CTV News Channel that there’s a few questions parents should definitely be aware of for this back-to-school season. “I think you want to get a sense of, ‘What are they doing?’” she said in reference to each individual school’s preparations. “What is the schedule at my child’s school for cleaning and disinfection?” She pointed out that high-touch areas in schools, such as doorknobs, handles and railings should be disinfected “at least twice a day,” since so many hands will use them. “The things that people are going to touch the most is where you’re going to likely have the spread of COVID-19,” she said. “So are they being disinfected? Cleaning is one thing, but disinfection is another. Are they being disinfected often enough, and is the disinfectant that they’re using on the approved list from the government of Canada? “Those are some of the questions that I’ll be asking my child’s school next week.” How much ventilation a school or classroom has is important, and is something parents could be pressing on. “Ventilation is one of the points that I don’t think we’ve heard a lot about in all of the news that’s come through, and it is important,” Lyon-Bartley said. “There’s the
public health measures, with the social distancing, there’s the hand washing, all those things, but [for] the actual physical building itself, ventilation […] can actually make a big difference.” Lyon-Bartley identified the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA Canada) pandemic planning guide as a good resource.“It talks about how you want to make sure that your schedules for your HVAC system and your preventative maintenance is being done and being done accordingly,” she said. “And also just making sure that you’re changing out those filters often.” It’s worth probing to see if schools are taking these measures seriously. Some of the biggest questions on parents’ minds are sure to be related to COVID-19 cases or outbreaks within schools. You want to make sure you’re aware of how schools plan to notify students, and what steps students and parents would be taking after that. Source: ctvnews.ca
Unions mark Labour Day with calls for increased COVID-19 help
OTTAWA -- Unions and labour groups across the country marked Labour Day with scaled-down versions of their traditional demonstrations, while calling on expanded federal government aid for workers struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic. The Canadian Labour Congress launched a campaign on Monday to coincide with the federal holiday that calls on the federal government to expand the changes to employment insurance that provides benefits to any Canadian worker left jobless even after the
pandemic ends. CLC president Hassan Yussuff also said that he hopes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address their concerns in his upcoming throne speech with announcements of improved apprenticeship program for Canadian youth, and ways to help visible minorities and immigrants access unemployment benefits. “We know we have gaps, we know we have many issues and what we’re hoping to get the federal government to address in the throne speech is how do we address some of these things to make this country truly a better place for working people (and) for all Canadian,” Yussuff told The Canadian Press. At a rally in Toronto, Shelli Sareen, secretarytreasurer of Unite Here Local 75, the largest hospitality union in the Greater Toronto Area, called for additional paid leave and long-term benefits as the hospitality industry struggles through historic declines in large events and tourism. “Many of our members are struggling to put food on their tables and they’re struggling to pay their bills and struggling pay their rent,” she said. OTTAWA -- WE Charity has repaid the full $30 million that the WE Charity Foundation received from the federal government under its now-cancelled deal to deliver the Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG), according to one of the organization’s Twitter accounts. “As of today, WE Charity has transferred back the full balance of funds for the CSSG to the Government of Canada,” according to the tweet sent from the WE Communications account on Thursday evening. “Over the last 2 months, WE Charity repeatedly communicated to the ESDC the desire to return the remaining funds as soon as the Gov was able to accept the transfer.” The WE Charity Foundation had signed a contribution agreement with the govern-
ment to deliver $543 million of up to $912 million in grants. WE Charity was slated to receive $43 million for the administration of the program, and $30 million of those funds was delivered to WE before the program was abruptly cancelled. During her testimony before the House ethics committee on August 11, Youth Minister Bardish Chagger said the full amount had yet to be repaid — despite the fact that WE Charity had pulled out from the program on July 3. “The money, as the organization has indicated, will be returned to the government,” Chagger said at the time. “We want to ensure that all processes are being followed. I can assure you that the public
cerned about the ballooning federal deficit amid the COVID-19 pandemic but are divided on if they have confidence in the federal government to rebuild the economy, according to a new survey by Nanos Research. The survey of 1,039 Canadians found that more than three quarters of those polled are concerned (47 per cent) or somewhat concerned (30 per cent) about the deficit. Just over two in 10 are not concerned (10 per cent) or somewhat not concerned (13 %) Before the pandemic hit, Canada was expected to post a $28.1-billion deficit for 2020-2021. Updated numbers released in July show that number skyrocketing to $343.2 billion, due in large part to record economic aid and stimulus plans that are on-par with Second World War-level spending. Part of that deficit can be attributed to measures such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, which has cost nearly $71.3 billion, and $30 billion spent on wage subsidies. The federal government has described COVID-19 as the “challenge of a genera-
tion” that required unprecedented spending to help stave off a full-blown economic collapse. Some critics have said that the steep spending made sense in the early days of the pandemic but may be difficult to sustain as the pandemic drags on. The Nanos survey suggests that those living in the Prairies are most worried about the deficit, with 83 per cent describing themselves as concerned or somewhat concerned. Every region surveyed found that most respondents were concerned or somewhat concerned, with Atlantic Canada (77 per cent), Quebec (77 per cent), Ontario (75 per cent) and British Columbia (74 per cent) expressing similar degrees of worry. start or expand a business will have access to loans and supports for training and mentorship under a new federal program unveiled by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Toronto Wednesday. The $221-million program jointly funded by the federal government and eight financial institutions, is the first of its kind to help Black businesses on a national scale. It responds to one of the requests made in June by an open letter from the Parliamentary Black Caucus that was signed by more than 100 MPs and senators. Trudeau said the COVID-19 pandemic has put a spotlight on the systemic gaps and economic barriers Black Canadians face every day, and that his government wants a pandemic recovery that is “inclusive and equitable for all Canadians.” “An investment in Black excellence is an investment in economic empowerment and economic empowerment is an essential part of justice,” he said. “It’s justice against a system that has locked out far too many Black entrepreneurs and denied them the same opportunities as other Canadians.” Ottawa is putting up $93 million over the next four years for the Black Entrepreneurship Program, while banks are contributing up to $128 million for loans between $25,000 and $250,000 for Black business owners. The federal cash will including $33 million towards the loans, $6.5 million to collect data on the barriers preventing Black Canadians from succeeding in business, and $53 million for Black business organi-
zations to provide mentorship, financial planning and business training. Trudeau made the announcement at a Toronto organization called HXOUSE, which describes itself as a “think centre” to help foster innovation and opportunities for young talents in Toronto. HXOUSE co-founder Ahmed Ismail said the program is a welcome sign of a government acknowledging systemic racism exists, addressing the fact opportunities are not equally available, and taking “the uncomfortable step of doing something about it.” “This is something I’ve never really witnessed in all my life in any country that I’ve studied,” said Ismail, who was born in Somalia and has also studied and worked in the United States. Liberal MP Greg Fergus, the chair of the Parliamentary Black Caucus, said the program isn’t all that is needed but will help Black Canadians be economic actors, community leaders and see “that we are full Canadians and want to participate in this wonderful country that we call home.” Source: ctvnews.ca

Saudi court scraps 5 death sentences over Khashoggi murder, jails 8 A Saudi court on Monday overturned five death sentences over journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder in a final ruling that jailed eight defendants to between seven and 20 years, state media reported. “Five of the convicts were given 20 years in prison and another three were jailed for 7-10 years,” the official Saudi Press Agency said, citing a spokesman for the public prosecutor. None of the defendants were named in what was described as the final court ruling on the killing which had sparked an international outcry. The verdict came after Khashoggi’s
sons said in May they had “pardoned” the killers, a move condemned as a “parody of justice” by a United Nations expert. The family’s pardon spared the lives of five unnamed people sentenced to death over the 2018 murder in a December court ruling, which was lambasted by human rights groups after two top aides to the crown prince were exonerated. Khashoggi — a royal family insider turned critic — was killed and dismembered at the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, in a case that tarnished the reputation of de facto
ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Khashoggi, a 59-year-old critic of the crown prince, was strangled and his body cut into pieces by a 15-man Saudi squad inside the consulate, according to Turkish officials. His remains have not been found. Riyadh has described the murder as a “rogue” operation, but both the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and a UN’s special envoy have directly linked Prince Mohammed to the killing, a charge the kingdom vehemently denies. Hezbollah, Hamas chiefs meet to discuss Israel-Arab ties Meeting comes after August’s agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates to normalise diplomatic relations. Leaders of Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement and the Palestinian Hamas group met to discuss diplomatic normalisation between Israel and Arab countries, the movement said. On Sunday, Hamas chief Ismail Haniya was given a hero’s welcome at Ain al-Helweh, Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee camp. Hezbollah-run Al-Manar television reported earlier that Hassan Nasrallah, head of the
Iran-backed Shia Hezbollah movement, and Haniya stressed the “stability” of the “axis of resistance” against Israel. They discussed “political and military developments in Palestine, Lebanon and the region” and “the dangers to the Palestinian cause”, including “Arab plans for normalisation” with Israel, Al-Manar said. The meeting comes after an August 13 announcement that Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to normalise ties. While the United States-backed diplomat-

The Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Omura Masahiro did the handover to Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau and said materials and equipment will assist Fiji in its food security challenges brought about by the COVID-19 epidemic. “Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of food security and sustaining livelihoods has been increasing and regarded as an urgent matter in Fiji. One solution to this challenge is developing freshwater aquaculture in communities.
It gives me great happiness to say that the newly provided equipment will increase the annual Tilapia seed production forecasting for the station,” Ambassador Omura said. Minister for Fisheries Hon. Semi Koroilavesau thanked the Government of Japan while receiving the equipment which was funded under the Grants Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Program (GGP). Minister Koroilavesau is optimistic that the generous assistance by the Japanese government will boost Tilapia production in Fiji by an annual production of $1.2m to $2.2m. “And maximum direct assistance to the ordinary freshwater farmers in Fiji,” he said. 9/11/2001 : Timeline of the September 11 Attacks
Written By: Amy Tikkanen Note: All times listed are Eastern Daylight Time. 7:59 AM: American Airlines flight 11 departs from Boston’s Logan International Airport, bound for Los Angeles. Aboard are 11 crew members and 81 passengers, including 5 hijackers. 8:14 AM: United Airlines flight 175 takes off from Boston, headed for Los Angeles. Aboard are 9 crew members and 56 passengers, including 5 hijackers. 8:14 AM: Flight 11 has its final routine communication with air traffic controllers. Sixteen seconds later, controllers instruct the pilot to increase the plane’s altitude. However, there is no response, and all subsequent messages are unanswered. Investigators believe the plane is hijacked around this time. 8:19 AM: A flight attendant on flight 11 alerts American Airlines that the plane has been hijacked. She reports that the “cockpit is not answering” and that the hijackers reportedly have a bomb. In addition, two other flight attendants and a passenger have been stabbed. The passenger, later determined to be Daniel Lewin, formerly served in the Israeli military, and it is thought that he tried to stop the hijacking. Some speculate that he was the first victim of the attacks. 8:20 AM: American Airlines flight 77 departs from Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., bound for Los Angeles. The plane is carrying 6 crew members and 58 passengers, including 5 hijackers. Before boarding, three of the terrorists had set off the metal detectors when going through security, but all passed subsequent inspections. 8:21 AM: The transponder on flight 11 is turned off, making it difficult for air traffic controllers to monitor its course. 8:24 AM: September 11 attacks. If you try to make any moves, you’ll endanger yourself and the airplane. Just stay quiet.” 8:37 AM: Air traffic controllers at Boston’s Logan Airport alert the U.S. military’s Northeast Air Defense Sector. 8:42 AM: Flight 175 makes its last communication with air traffic controllers, reporting that during takeoff it heard a “suspicious transmission” from another airplane, later determined to be flight 11. Around this time, flight 175 is hijacked, and some five minutes later its transponder code is changed.

At this point, no aircraft has been notified that flight 11 has been hijacked. 8:44 AM: A second flight attendant on flight 11 is on the phone with air officials and reports that the plane is in “rapid descent” and that it is flying “way too low.” The call then abruptly ends. 8:46 AM: Two military jets are ordered to depart from Otis Air National Guard Base in Cape Cod, headed to New York. 8:46:40 AM: Hijackers on flight 11 fly the airplane into the North Tower of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City. The impact occurs between floors 93 and 99. The crash instantly kills hundreds, including all those on board. Almost immediately emergency responders are sent to the building. 8:51 AM: Flight 175 changes from its assigned altitude, and repeated efforts by air traffic controllers to contact the plane are

Two minutes later the pilot asks the dispatcher to confirm the message. 9:25 AM: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) bars all civil aircraft in the United States from taking off. 9:29 AM: Hijackers on flight 93 attack the cockpit. “Mayday” is declared over a radio transmission and sounds of a physical struggle are heard. On another transmission seconds later, someone yells “get out of here.” 9:32 AM: Controllers at Dulles observe an airplane traveling at a “high rate of speed.”
Two minutes later officials at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport alert the Secret Service of a plane (later determined to be flight 77) headed in the direction of the White House. 9:32 AM: A hijacker on flight 93 announces, “Ladies and Gentlemen: Here the captain, please sit down keep remaining sitting. 15 E du c ati o n / YO U T H Surrey School District shared its plan to safely return to in-class instruction Muharrum 23,1442H
September 11, 2020
Dear Community Members;
F
irst of all, I would like to take a moment to thank all of you. These last few months have been challenging times for everyone. As we move into September, many families are preparing for the next big hurdle – return to school. Undoubtedly, there has been a lot of information, a long list of concerns expressed and now several options available to families. With this newsletter, we will try to breakdown the various options available to Surrey students and parents for the start of the 2020/2021 Academic year. On August 26th, the Surrey School District shared its plan to safely return to in-class instruction. These plans reflect the measures put forth by provincial health experts and the Ministry of Education and include the important steps schools will take to safely welcome students back in September. In response to parent feedback and concerns, a new option was introduced that will be available to families that are not ready to have their child return to full-time face to face instruction when school begins next week but want their children to remain enrolled in their current schools. This newsletter will present a basic overview of the current approved plans that are in place for the upcoming school year. The Ministers of Education and Health have worked collaboratively with the various school districts, the BCTF (BC Teachers Federation), parent groups and support staff to develop this plan. I know this has been a challenging process for all involved and that so much uncertainty leaves many feeling anxious and scared but I would like to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly throughout the summer to develop guidelines and plans in place so that our children can return to learning in these challenging times. Families are expected to have received communication from the school where students are enrolled. Please take the time to respond to your school so that your school can best plan for your child’s return. If you are looking at enrolling in the new blended transition programs that are offered, it is essential that you fill out the form and return it to your neighbourhood school no later than September 8th at 4:00 pm.

COHORTS
A cohort is a group of students and staff who will remain together throughout a school term. Within the cohort, minimized physical contact will be encouraged where possible but a two metre physical distance does not need to be maintained. Cohorts will include students, teachers, support staff and educational assistants.
HEALTH & SAFETY ORIENTATION
Individual schools will be sending out schedules for a student orientation where teacher will communicate new procedures for the school year. Students will learn about the importance of their cohorts and how to interact within their cohort and with individuals outside of their cohorts. Hand hygiene, minimizing physical contact and how to safely enter and exit the school will all be covered during this initial meeting. https://www.surreyschools.ca/covid19/ healthsafety/Pages/default.aspx

Students will be enrolled in their neighbourhood school and will not lose their spot if they choose to enroll in Surrey Blended. VICTORIA - A new school year unlike any other begins in just a few days. I know living through the pandemic is a worry for all of us. But I know many people, especially students, are excited about heading back to school, to connect with teachers and friends. Health experts predict we will be living with COVID-19 for months to come. We must show young British Columbians that’s it’s ok to be concerned, but it’s also ok to keep learning and growing and stay connected to school and friends. Schools are going to look different this year, schedules are going to be different and classrooms are going to be different.
What has not changed is our government’s commitment to the health and safety of students and staff. Our ministry and schools are taking science-based, public-health advice and planning to have as many children as possible back in classrooms this September. Schools are the best places for students. There is no substitute for in-class learning and, more than that, we know there are unintended negative consequences when children are not in school for extended periods of time. To support schools during this pandemic, we have provided a new, one-time provincial investment of $45.6 million in COVID-19 specific funding to ensure our schools are safe for students and staff. We have ordered 1.5 million reusable face masks - that’s two masks for every student and staff member. We have provided funds to school districts to buy more cleaning supplies, to hire more custodial staff and to enhance and expand handwashing stations. Plus, the federal government is supporting our efforts with an additional $242.4
million. This funding will support school districts to hire more teachers and support staff to help students whether they are learning remotely or in the classroom, to purchase more software licences and electronic course materials or textbooks, to help supply computers or tablets for the families who need them and to create additional WiFi hubs in remote and Indigenous communities, or provide internet access for families. This funding will also allow schools to expand their health and safety measures, improve ventilation in buildings, purchase more personal protective equipment, install plexiglass barriers and hire even more custodial and support staff. Every dollar of the provincial and federal funding will benefit students in B.C. School districts are reporting the majority of students are heading back to the classroom. For those who are not, I’ve directed school districts to be flexible and work with families to provide remote options that keep children connected to their school community. The pandemic has upended our world.
Many families have been making sacrifices to support their children with learning in the spring and throughout the summer, and I thank them. I also thank teachers and education assistants who have been getting their classes and lesson plans ready; principals, viceprincipals and school administrators who have connected with families to make sure they know about learning groups and what to expect in the classroom; and school support staff who are doing everything needed to keep schools clean and safe. Our government is steadfast in its promise to work together with school communities, to respond quickly and appropriately throughout the pandemic and to focus on health and safety while delivering the highest quality education possible to students who deserve us to be at our best now and always. B.C. remains one of the safest places in the world because we are in this together. Let’s continue to look out for each other - working and learning safely in school this year. Celebrating Disability Employment The Importance of Personal Boundaries Month 2020
I
By Ward Kindlein would like to share with my family and friends the excitement I am feeling! There are a couple of reasons that I am so happy with how my life has developed since 2015 when both of my legs were amputated below the knee, the medical term is bilateral below knee amputation. I had to give up my previous career due to a breakdown of sorts combined with the health problems associated with the amputations. While I was recuperating I was trying to think of a new career that I could excel at and the thought of counselling so I could help people kept recurring. By the spring of 2017 my wounds had healed enough to the point I could get up off the couch and reenter society. I decided I would find something to commit myself to that would benefit my community, friends, and neighbours. I have been involved with giving back to the community quite often throughout my life and enjoy the feeling of doing good deeds. On my fiftieth birthday I phoned the campaign office of Surrey - Whalley MLA Bruce Ralston and offered to help in his reelection. I spent the next four weeks working every day to help get Bruce elected for his fourth term. I began to wake up happy because I had something important to do. It is very exciting and exhilarating to discover something you enjoy doing. To get up in the morning and be happy when getting ready for work is a coveted feeling that should not be squandered. Soon after he was re-elected in 2017, Bruce, who had often complimented me during the campaign for my contributions and skills, offered me a part-time temporary position in his constituency office. I was excited at the opportunity -- and a bit nervous! At first I was working half days, and slowly, as I regained strength, I moved up to full time hours. I worked hard and enjoyed the work, getting more and more comfortable and confident with a career choice that allows me to help my neighbours in my community. As the Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, MLA, Hon. Bruce Ralston, is very busy in his role, but always has time to be out in our community, meet with constituents, and represent the government at events and meetings around the province.
MLA Ralston has always been very positive in working with me to give me the confidence and skills to excel in my work as his Constituency Assistant. He has told me many times how good I am with people and praise my ability to help them solve the challenges they meet. Through my own experience, I know all about the hard knocks that can be tossed at you, and in my job I take it as a personal challenge to find solutions to the problems that people in Surrey - Whalley face.
Why am I telling my story?
September is “Disability Employment Month,” and this month 2 years ago Bruce Ralston, MLA for Surrey - Whalley, hired me as his permanent full-time Constituency Assistant to manage his community office. For a long time I had no goals, no dreams, no hopes. I had given up on myself. MLA Ralston saw me for what I had to offer and was able to guide me in finding my confidence once again. He challenges me to do better and be better every day and asks me to do new and different tasks that I never before thought I could do. Bruce has shown me the kindness and commitment he puts into his work for constituents and the dedication he has in helping every single person who comes through his door – no matter how different they are. I am very thankful to Surrey -Whalley MLA Bruce Ralston for looking past what others call a disability and for giving me a chance at living life again.
By: Asma Shums, Often overlooked, personal boundaries are the key to have long-lasting relationships that are respectful, supportive, and sustainable. They are the critical keys in ensuring that you maintain your self-respect and don’t burnout providing constantly for others and being unfair to yourself. By having boundaries, you tell others what is acceptable behavior towards you and in a way determine how you feel about yourself. If you often feel uncomfortable by how others treat you or in an imbalanced relationship, it may be time to reset these boundaries to your acceptable level. Weak boundaries leave you feeling that you are being taken advantage of and unhappy as you are vulnerable. Healthy boundaries on the other hand, make you feel well-taken care of with plenty of energy left to spend on yourself. How to Reset Your Boundaries The most important step before resetting your boundaries is to take some time to identify relationships where you feel unsatisfied. Identify the specific situations and/or people that leave you unhappy and hurt and the motivation behind it. The next step is to identify the action you can take to rectify this situation. You may decide to let a friend know that their constant jokes on your failures in school is hurtful and put an end to it. Or let a family member know that constant nagging to find a job is redundant and ask for help in your search instead. This also means you can question insults masked as humor. Also, learn to say no to things that are extending your boundaries. As

you learn to enforce your boundaries, try not to overstep on other people’s boundaries. There are multiple ways to identify and rectify these situations and you can use this guide as a cheat sheet. The ‘Five Things’ Method •List five things you want people to stop doing around you - such as jokes centering around a specific race of people •List five things you want people to stop doing to you – such as not taking your suggestions seriously in a work meeting •List five things you want people to stop saying to you – such as you always giving up on a project that interests you Using this method, you can keep updating your boundaries. It may be tough enforcing these with friends or families as they might not understand your reasons or take it as a personal attack. However, resetting your boundaries change your values from pleasing others to valuing your own time and having a sustainable relationship with yourself and others. In hard moments remember Harriet Lerner, “An intimate relationship is one in which neither party silences, sacrifices, or betrays the self and each party expresses strength, vulnerability, weakness and competence in a balanced way” to feel comfort in setting your boundaries. info at: asmashums@gmail.com

Misbah calls on cricket rivals to tour Pakistan
Pakistan cricket coach Misbahul Haq urged more nations to tour the country, saying on Monday the sport needs “mutual support” to recover from the coronavirus crisis. His appeal comes just a week after Pakistan finished a tour of England, where they played three Tests and as many Twenty20 internationals in empty stadiums. During the trip, the squad spent two months in a bio-secure environment after several players tested positive for Covid-19 before the trip. Even before the pandemic, Pakistan was trying to attract touring teams after militants attacked Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore in 2009. Security has improved, however, and last year Pakistan squared off against Sri Lanka in what was its first home Test in a decade. Misbah said he hoped teams such as England would consider travelling to Pakistan as global sport slowly returns following months of inactivity. “Our tour to England was important for both countries,” Misbah told a press conference in Lahore.
“It was also important to support the cricket world in general and English cricket in particular in these testing times of Covid-19. “Pakistan also deserves similar support from other countries. These are times when the cricket world needs mutual support.” Last week, England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Ian Watmore said England should “definitely” tour Pakistan provided it was safe to do so.
