“Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan), observe fast, and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal), break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days”.
– Sahih Muslim
The Companions of the Prophet(SAW) used to prepare for Ramadan six months in advance. So, if we really want to make the best of this Ramadan,
Seven Ways To Prepare For Ramadan
then we need to prepare for it now! As we know, fasting is more than just abstaining from food but from indecent speech and lustful desires as well. Fasting pushes us to be cognizant of our actions, to be patient and to be moral individuals, thereby increasing our taqwa (God-consciousness). Here are some ways we can improve on di erent aspects of our life so we can fully bene t from Ramadan, a time when deeds are multiplied.
1. Fast Voluntarily is month—Shabaan—is the prime time to start fasting those extra fasts or making up your missed fasts from last Ramadan. Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said, ‘Oh Messenger of
Wa bissawmi ghadann nawaitu min shahri ramadan
Allah, I do not see you fasting in any other month like you fast in Shabaan.’ He said, ‘ at is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadan, and it is a month in which deeds are li ed up to the Lord of the Worlds. I like for my deeds to be li ed up when I am fasting.’”
(Narrated by al-Nasaai)
e best way to prepare fasting for a whole month is to start fasting o en, in order to gain control over your actions, stomach and desires.
Fast Mondays and ursdays:
Abu Hurairah reported that the most the Prophet (SAW) would fast would be Monday and ursday. He was asked about that and he said: “ e deeds of people are
presented to Allah on every Monday and ursday. Allah forgives every Muslim except for those who are deserting each other.” (Hasan)
Fast the White Days—13th, 14th and 15th of each Islamic month:
Abu arr Al-Ghefari said: “ e Messenger of Allah (SWT) said, ‘Oh Abu Dharr! If you fast three days of every month, then fast the 13th, 14th and 15th (these are called AlAyaam Al-Beedh, the White Days).’” (Sahih) e Prophet (SAW) said, “(Allah said), ‘Every good deed of Adam’s son is for him except fasting; it is for Me, and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.’ Verily, the smell

SILENCE is complicity, said the Philippines Nobel laureate journalist Maria Ressa in her 2022 memoir How to Stand Up to a Dictator. Our biggest problems are the results of choices made by those in power. I have seen the rule of law crumble from within. e powerful forces — people, institutions, interests — are the main obstacles to a better future for Pakistan.
ere is no doubt that pre-poll and post-poll rigging carried out in the latest national elections was the worst since the break-up of the country in 1971. We must speak truth to power. e string pullers used tried and tested tactics to tame a digital-savvy generation — but could not win.
e voter’s response was de ant. Against all odds, they thronged to the polling stations and their message, as reported by author and journalist Mohammed Hanif for the BBC, was clear: “We may not be able to take you on in the streets, you have your guns, but here’s our stamp on the ballot. Do what you will with it.”
e Feb 8 polls clearly revealed that the winds of change are blowing in Pakistan. Millions of tech-savvy youth participated in the electoral process for the rst time in their lives. Pakistan’s youth is a large and growing demographic and an important voting bloc: 44 per cent of the electorate this year was under 35. Social media was the dominant political campaign tool. Middleclass voters turned out in big numbers. Women and girls were also very actively involved. e distinction between urban, peri urban and rural voters could not be made. attacks on Red Sea shipping in response to Israel’s war on Gaza.
At least 30,717 Palestinians have been killed and 72,156 wounded in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 7. e death toll in Israel from the October 7 Hamas attacks stands at 1,139.
Gaza cease re deal still possible, US says Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the US State Department, said Washington believes Israel and Hamas could still reach an agreement on a cease re before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins early next week. e comments came amid speculation that negotiations for a 40-day cease re and the release of captives were at an impasse. “We continue to believe that the obstacles are not insurmountable and that a deal can be reached,” Miller

mainstream, national parties, instead of narrow-based religious or ethnic political entities.
ree major political forces have emerged: the PTI, PML-N and PPP. e voters of KP have clearly voted big for the PTI, consistently increasing its vote bank in the three previous elections of 2013, 2018 and 2024. Punjab this time has clearly broken the pattern of voting for ‘electables’ — prominent political families relying on patronage politics. People mostly voted on party lines, rejecting the establishment-sponsored parties launched to create a dent in the vote bank of the most popular party.
Sindh remains the stronghold of the PPP, thanks to the Bhutto legacy. e declared results of Karachi do not re ect the reality: the city is not dominated by a single ethnic party. Both the PTI and PPP have a strong following. Balochistan presents a very troubling scenario.
e footprints of the establishment muzzling the voices of dissent are writ large. e Baloch nationalist regions and Pakhtun areas are witnessing a rising tide of resentment. e issue of missing persons remains a festering wound.
e politicians have not learnt any lesson from our history of ‘de jure’ and ‘de facto’ military rule.
Like most of the previous elections, the recent Feb 8 polls were unfortunately rigged massively. On joining government service in 1973, I saw every election rigged by the state institutions. I was part of the elections monitoring cell of the Punjab Police in 1977 when selective rigging and a managed unopposed
told a daily press brie ng in Washington, DC. “We’re going to continue to push for one,” he said.
In a statement to the ICJ, South Africa says it is compelled to return to the court in light of new facts, particularly widespread malnutrition and starvation in Gaza, brought about by continuing breaches of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Jonathan Kuttab, an international human rights lawyer and a co-founder of the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq, discusses these developments with Al Jazeera. e United Nations has warned at least a quarter of Gaza’s population is one step away from famine Israel’s aims in Gaza appear to ‘go beyond destroying Hamas’: EU top diplomat More on Josep Borrell’s announcement of an EU probe into Israel’s
election of a few prominent politicians resulted in a mass movement by the opposition parties. eir leaders were arrested and detained at Police College Sihala near Rawalpindi.
A er their release and the promulgation of martial law in July 1977, we saw Z.A. Bhutto detained and brought to Police College Sihala, the same place of detention but with a change in the status of the prisoner. Such has been our political saga.
Like the US president Franklin Roosevelt, it seemed Mr Bhutto was asking to be judged by the enemies he had made. His trial in the infamous murder case and hanging in April 1979 was fraught with a gory irony: a general low in the seniority list but selected as army chief, based on expected loyalty, was instrumental in the ‘judicial murder’ of his benefactor.
A er a sham referendum of 1984, the army chief declared himself president for ve years, followed by non-party elections in 1985, wherein people were selected to promote the agenda set by the dictator. Removing that dictator proved to be an uphill task despite the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy launched in protest against a sham democratic façade.
e activists and workers of the PPP bore the brunt of brutal state tyranny. We then saw the decent and honest prime minister Mohammad Khan Junejo, appointed by the military dictator in 1985, sacked by the same general in 1988. Fate had a violent end written for the tyrant military chief; having completed more than a decadelong reign of decadence, he died in
compliance with rights obligations in Gaza. e EU’s top diplomat used strong language to denounce Israeli actions in the Palestinian territory. He expressed concern over Israel’s killing of more than 100 Palestinian aid seekers and said the incident shows that “the international community needs to take decisive steps to save Gazan civilians from both starvation and violence”.
A er ve months of war, “the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza give the impression that its objectives go beyond destroying Hamas”, Borrell said, quoting an Israeli general who pledged to “turn Gaza into a place that is temporarily or permanently impossible to live in”. “And indeed,” Borrell said, “almost everything that allows a human society to function has been destroyed: civil register, prop-
a mysterious plane crash in August 1988. Next followed a decade of political ping-pong between two political parties headed by Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.
e military establishment called the shots and the resultant political instability led to the nation lurching from one crisis to another.
e politicians have not learnt any lesson from our chequered history of ‘de jure’ and ‘de facto’ military rule. Nawaz Sharif repeated his earlier mistake of selecting an army chief in 2016 who was not the senior-most. e role of the deep state in the elections of 2018 is an open secret. en it was ironic that prime minister Imran Khan gave a threeyear extension to the army chief in 2019, believing in the same-page mantra. e toppling of his government and subsequent political engineering since April 2022 are so widely known. And now the current government installed a er the latest highly controversial elections is being dubbed as the “coalition of losers”.
It is little surprise that Pakistan was recently downgraded from a hybrid to authoritarian regime by the Economist Intelligence Unit. e most e ective response to authoritarians and autocrats is to echo Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s challenge to “live not by lies”. For how long will we live by lies? To those who wield power today, one can whisper: ‘memento mori’, a reminder of inevitable mortality.

Taraweeh prayer is one of the remarkable specialties of Ramadan nights; for the whole month, Muslims line up at night to observe a number of optional rak`at and listen to and re ect on the recitation of the Qur’an. It is a very blessed and highly spiritual experience.
Below, Sheikh Sharif Faizullah highlights, in 10 points, valuable information about this prayer.
#1. Taraweeh means rest and relaxation Qiayam al-Layl in Ramadan a er `Isha’ is called taraweeh because righteous people before our time used to rest a er every four rak`at as their prayers were lengthy. Taraweeh is sunnah mu’akkadah (a conrmed practice of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him).

2. Recite and Re ect Upon the Qur’an Start now to re ect on portions of the Qur’an to get closer to Allah and understand your responsibilities. Every single time you read the Qur’an, you will uncover more depths of meaning and bene t in this world and the herea er.
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) related that the Prophet (saw) said: “Indeed the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly and precisely, will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels.
As for the one who recites with di culty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have twice that reward.” (Muslim)

15 Hadiths on Optional Night Prayer (Qiyam)
In the last year of the Prophet’s life, he came out one night and prayed taraweeh. On that night, some people prayed with him. during the second night, word spread and more people joined in taraweeh. Even more people attended on the third. On the fourth night, the masjid was packed and the people awaited the Prophet’s arrival.
e Prophet, however, prayed at home by himself. a er Fajr, he said:
“Nothing prevented me from coming out to you except the fact that I feared that it would be made obligatory for you.” (Muslim)
From the time of Abu Bakr to the beginning of `Umar’s time, people prayed either individually or in small groups. Later, ‘Umar gathered everyone behind one imam and they prayed 8 Rak`at. Eventually, it was increased to 20 raka‘at to make it easy for the people.
#4. e Prophet prayed 8 rak`at of taraweeh and 3 rak`at of witr
`A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked about the Prophet’s night prayer;
she said:
“he did not pray more than 11 rak`at [a night] in Ramadan or any other month. he used to pray 4 rak`at -don’t ask me about their beauty and length–and then he would pray 4 more rak`at-don’t ask me about their beauty and length–and then he would pray 3 rak`at (of witr).” (Al-Bukhari)

#6. Finish taraweeh with the Imam & get the reward of entire night
e Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever prays qiyam with the imam until he nishes, Allah will record for him the qiyam of a (whole) night.” (AnNasa’i and authenticated by Al-Albani) Do NOT leave a er 8, if the imam is praying 20 or 36!

4. Repent and Make Dua’a
We all make mistakes, but alhamdulilah we can always repent.
e Prophet (saw) said: “All the children of Adam constantly err, but the best of those who constantly err are those who constantly repent.” (Tirmidhi)
5. Give Charity is world can only be a better place if we help each other. In return, Allah rewards us in both worlds.

Everyone can be a little bit more kind and work on di erent aspects of their character.
e Prophet(saw) used to say: “ e best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character.” (al-Bukhari)
7. Eat Healthy and Moderately
With less time to eat in Ramadan, we really need to pay attention to what we eat. Now is the best time to research the nutritious value of the food we eat. Brian Mulroney, one of Canada’s most consequential prime ministers, is dead at 84
Brian Mulroney — who, as Canada’s 18th prime minister, steered the country through a tumultuous period in national and world a airs — has died. He was 84. His daughter Caroline Mulroney shared the news ursday a ernoon on social media.
“On behalf of my mother and our family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of my father, e Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister. He died peacefully, surrounded by family,” she said on X, formerly Twitter.

Israel-Palestine ‘Two-State Solution’ as a Distraction
BY: RAMZY BAROUD
The problem is not the absence of a Palestinian state, but Zionism itself.
What is the use of a Palestinian state, if Zionism, as a racist, exclusivist ideology continues to de ne Israel, and impose that de nition on the Palestinians?
is ideology calls for racial purity of Jews in Palestine, of course, at the expense of the native inhabitants of the land. To achieve this, millions of Palestinians had to be forced into exile, hundreds of thousands needed to be killed, wounded or incarcerated.
Neither two states, nor even one state is possible if Zionism is not entirely defeated – not revamped, not ‘ xed’, but eradicated.
As Palestinians are being killed in unprecedentedly large numbers in Gaza, western politicians are waking up to the necessity of a Palestinian state. But why now? A er all, it was these very politicians and their governments that either defended or remained silent as Israel thwarted every possibility of peaceful co-existence.
eirs is not a moral awakening, but a distraction, to appear - at least before their own people - to be proactive, while Israel is systematically destroying the Palestinian people. Former UNRWA o cial, Chris Gunnes, said about the Israeli war on Gaza that this is “the rst genocide in the history of humanity that is livestreamed on television”. e genocide is worsening now that Palestinians are starting to die from starvation, while an even larger number is dying from disease and polluted water, aside, of course, from those being blown up or shot by Israel.
For the likes of David Cameron, Britain’s Foreign Minister, to talk about the recognition of a Palestinian state as “absolutely vital” for “long-term peace”, is bewildering, to say the least. ose struggling to survive
daily are hardly concerned about yet more empty western promises.
e genocide underway in Gaza tells us that the issue is not merely political, but an ideological one. And, while western leaders speak of ‘long-term peace’, Israel entrenches its system of violence and apartheid.
“ ere cannot be a situation in which children and women approach us from the wall. Anyone (…) must receive a bullet,” Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said on February 12.
In Gaza, the violence is far more sickening. Euro-Med Monitor, a rights group, reported on February 12 that “groups of ten to twenty Israeli civilians at a time were permitted to watch and laughingly lm Palestinian prisoners and detainees in their underwear” as they were tortured and abused by Israeli soldiers.
ere can be no rational political justi cation for any of this. All of this - the language of genocide, the genocide itself and the threats of committing a greater genocide - is rooted, not in a rational political theory, but in Zionism.
e problem keeps getting worse because we refuse to address it head-on. In fact, many are doing the exact opposite. For example, western governments have passed - or are passing - laws equating between criticism of Zionism and anti-Semitism. Even Facebook wants to ban the use of the term ‘Zionist’ if it is critical of Israel.
When Israeli Heritage Minister, Amichai Eliyahu, threatened, on November 5, to drop a nuclear bomb on Gaza, he was condemned by many merely for his inappropriate language, not the act itself. Some Israeli o cials also criticized Eliyahu as well, only for damaging Israel’s international reputation.
e Israeli Minister, however, was not simply talking out of anger. He meant it, be-
cause Israel’s behavior in Gaza, since then, has demonstrated that such willingness to kill Palestinians en masse actually exists.
Zionists are ready to do anything to survive, and their survival is wholly dependent on the erasure of the perceived enemy; not ‘erasure’ in an intellectual, political, or even cultural sense, but the physical destruction of the Palestinians as well.
e ethnic cleansing of Palestine, known as the Nakba, in 1948, was a serious attempt at achieving that goal. But since the ‘enemy’, being the Palestinian nation, had survived and continues to resist and demand its collective rights, the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people is now back on the mainstream Israeli political agenda.
is ongoing Gaza war is the most serious attempt, to date, to destroy the Palestinian people. is is why Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his government want to carry on with the war. On the one hand, they want to ensure the continued slaughter, thus the extermination of the Palestinians and, on the other, they are also fully aware that this is a historic opportunity to nish a job that previous Zionist leaders did not complete, 75 years earlier. Indeed, Israel sees the war on Gaza beyond the geographic con nes of the tiny Gaza Strip. It is a war on the Palestinians everywhere. If Israel succeeds in subduing Gaza, it will turn its gaze immediately to the West Bank, then to the millions of Palestinians inside Israel. It is important to recall that, before the current war, the Israeli incitement against Palestinians was focused mostly on
the West Bank - with the declared aim of an-
nexing over a third of that occupied region.
ere was also a major o cial Israeli campaign to curtail the rights and incite hatred against Palestinian Arabs inside Israel. is campaign is rooted in history but has become far more apparent following the Unity Intifada (uprising) of May 2021.
It was then that Israel realized that the ‘division’ of the Palestinians was largely political, and that, as a nation, Palestinians remain strongly connected.
at is why Ben-Gvir lobbied, even before he claimed his ministerial position in December 2022, to have a National Guard tasked with “restoring governance where needed”. If Gaza falls, all Palestinians in the rest of Palestine will become the new target for Israeli violence, ethnic cleansing and, if necessary, genocide. Reducing all these issues to that of nding creative political solutions that would merely sell false hope to the Palestinian people is not only ignorant, or devious, but also a diversion from the real issue: Israel’s Zionist ideology.
Zionism, like all racist colonial ideologies, operates with a zero-sum approach to their relationship with the natives of colonized land: dominance through ethnic cleansing and genocide.
For ‘long-term peace’ to take place, Zionism must end..Source: islamicity.org

Minnesota’s ‘stunning’ uncommitted vote reveals enduring problem for Biden
.Analysts and advocates say the Super Tuesday results show the protest movement against Biden extends beyond Arab and Muslim voters. e concept behind the Michigan protest was simple: Cast a vote for the “uncommitted” option in the Democratic primary, instead of supporting United States President Joe Biden. But the backlash at the ballot box has since become a national movement, with key races in the Super Tuesday primaries revealing strong showings for “uncommitted” voters in other states too. e idea, activists say, is to send a message that Democratic voters will not tolerate Biden’s unequivocal support for Israel’s war in Gaza. And that message appears to be gaining steam.
Last week, over 101,000 Michigan residents cast “uncommitted” ballots in the Democratic primary, for around 13 percent of the
vote. is week, on Super Tuesday, Minnesota saw nearly 19 percent of its primary votes go to the “uncommitted” category — an even higher ratio of voters, despite the last-minute nature of the state’s protest. at comes on top of similar e orts in Super Tuesday states like North Carolina and Massachusetts to rebuke Biden at the ballot box....Source:aljazeera.com

Bangladesh:The speech and those transformative days of March ‘71
e speech was a beautiful blend of clarity for us and calculated vagueness for the enemy. e days of March 1971 are among the most crucial in the history of Bangladesh’s struggle for independence. Events in this month are a combination of the nest (the March 7 speech) and the most tragic (the beginning of the genocide against us). It began with a spontaneous protest at Dhaka Stadium when the crowd, while watching a game, burst out in rage at the news that Pakistani President Gen Yahya Khan had postponed the convening of the National Assembly, and ended with the massacre in Dhaka and elsewhere, marking the beginning of the genocide on the night of the 25th, the Declaration of Independence, arrest of Bangabandhu by the Pakistanis, and

What is Daylight Saving Time?
Daylight Saving Time is a way to conserve energy by utilizing more hours of sunlight as a natural source. e timeframe in which the sun rises and sets already depends on the season we’re in. So, moving the clock forward an hour in the spring from Standard
Likewise, moving the clock backward from DST to Standard Time in the fall, heading into the winter, has a counter-impact, allowing us to adapt to the new season. is method was introduced to the U.S. in 1918, initially being deemed “fast time.” Now be-
ing used for more than just one sole purpose, the U.S. is one of 70 countries around the globe to have adapted DST.
Why do we have Daylight Saving Time? A few stories prevail about how the United States adopted the time change. Benjamin Franklin wrote an early “proposition” in a 1784 letter to e Journal of Paris, where he suggested the city could save 64,050,000
pounds of candle wax burned if only its citizens would rise with the sun. He also suggested ring cannons in every street as a city-wide alarm clock, so the letter is taken mainly as satire (thank goodness)...

MOne essential component of khushoo’ is faith.
By: Asma Ayyaz
Allah says in the Qur’an: “And indeed it’s big except on the people of khushoo’” [Quran:2:45]
e word khushoo’ mentioned in the verse above is a combination of many things. But one essential component of khushoo’ is faith. It’s not a surprise then that the Prophet made faith a
precondition for fasting to be effective. In the authentic hadith, “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith while expecting its reward, then all his previous sins will be forgiven” [Bukhari and Muslim].
In other words, you treat fasting as a true and complete act of worship. We don’t do it out of habit, or because our family
or our environment expects us to, but because we worship Allah through this act. If we break it down further, worship is made out of our pure love and utter submission. If we were to apply that to fasting, it means we fast out of pure love for Allah and out of utter submission to His command.

How are B.C. gangs targeting youth for recruitment?
14 are being actively targeted by organized criminals to join streetlevel gangs, experts say.
Two former high-pro le gang members spoke to Global News regarding their experiences within the world of organized crime.
Stanley Price, a former member of the Redd Alert gang who sold rearms and illicit drugs in the Downtown Eastside for more than 15 years, is now a speaker with KidsPlay Foundation, a program in
ost people probably do not know that Arab and Islamic history has its fair share of atheists and skeptics of Abrahamic religions. e o cial narrative was only concerned with documenting the history of Islamic civilization as a history of faith, while ignoring the skeptics at times, or defaming them at others. Consequently, the majority of their writings were either burned or disappeared. In his book e History of Atheism in Islam, author Abdel Rahman Badawi has attempted to gather the stories and thoughts of atheists in Islamic history from di erent sources. Concerned neither with defending nor attacking these thinkers, the book attempts instead to document their existence as agents within this rich civilization. ese were people who both a ected and were a ected by this civilization, having formed a movement within it that in uenced even those who defended religion. ese thinkers pushed clerics and public speakers to develop their discursive tools in order to suit modern science and philosophies, and be up to date with the spirit of the age. is was ultimately benecial to these religious gures, and enriched the civilization. e atheism to which Abdel Rahman Badawi refers is di erent from the prevalent de nition of atheism: i.e. denying the existence of a deity. He distinguishes between the atheist movement as it exists in this part of the world from that which developed in the West, wherein Western atheist thinkers sought to undermine the central tenet upon which religiosity is built, which is the existence of a god. Conversely, Badawi postulates that Arab atheists sought to question and discredit the idea of prophethood, on the basis that religiosity in the East is primarily built on this principle. So what was it that drove these thinkers to critique religions in general, to the point that they would not submit to a single one of the beliefs prevalent in this part of the world? And what were their objections to them? ese are the most vital beliefs that they held, with no attempt to place judgment on their validity or lack thereof. Perhaps the most renowned of these thinkers was Ibn al-Rawandi, who questioned prophethood, rejected the Abrahamic religions, and sharply criticized the Quran and the Sunnah. He is considered the most famous atheist in Islamic history, speci cally because his ideas reached us through books in which the authors sought to refute these very ideas. We have dedicated an entire article to al-Rawandi here on Raseef22.
Vancouver that works to mitigate youth involvement in gangs.
According to experts, kids as young as 12 years old are being identi ed by gangs or subgroups to be recruited – they target kids that appear to be mis ts, those with rough home lives, or cocky bravado youths. Experts said it makes it easy to pull the child in with a little bit of charm and a dose of acceptance. Price said of his time in the drug
trade that as he got older, he noticed more and more young people becoming involved with organized crime — he said it was a key factor in his “retirement.” “I didn’t agree with it. We were having a party … I look over and I saw some kids probably around the ages of 14, 15, 16 years old hanging out,” Price said. “ at is how old my kids are.” District warns gangs targeting students in Greater Victoria Sometime between 2016 and 2017,

Price said he began to move away from organized crime. Something an associate said to him was an eyeopener. “He looked at my boys and said, ‘ at is our future,’” Price told Global News.
What he meant was that they were going to take over for us, and that really resonated in my mind, like ‘Yeah, my children are my future.’
And I don’t ever want my children to make the mistakes I made and

LeadingAtheists in Muslim History
Ibn al-Muqa a’
Ibn al-Muqa a’ was not an atheist in the sense of denying the existence of god or the resurrection, and nearly everything that was attributed to him in this regard can be found in a single chapter of the renowned collection of tales Kalila wa Dimnah, which he translated himself from Farsi to Arabic. Much of the speculation around this particular chapter, known as “Borzuya, as translated by Ibn Khalkan,” contends that Ibn al-Muqa a’ wrote this chapter himself and attributed it as part of the book in order to clandestinely put forth his skeptical thoughts towards religions. It is said that the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mahdi (158 - 169 AH) claimed that there is no disbelief that cannot be traced to this chapter that was written by Ibn al-Muqa a’. It is this same chapter that led to the accusation of Ibn al-Muqa a of in delity (or political intrigue), and then to the amputation of his limbs and the burning of his body parts in front of his eyes until he died. In a segment of this chapter, Ibn al-Muqa a’ tells the tale of Persian physician Borzuya’s journey with religions, wherein he begins with doubting the religion he has inherited from his parents, and so tries to nd a replacement. He reaches the point of condemning all religious people who are born with their parents’ religion, without consid-
ering the veracity of their beliefs or its lack thereof. Above all, he condemned inter-religious disputes with each party claiming the truth of their beliefs. He insisted that there is no inherent reason to submit to one religion over another, concluding that it is sucient to treat people well and withhold from harming anyone.
Abu Bakr Muhammad Bin Zakaria al-Razi
There is perhaps more room here to discuss al-Razi’s philosophy rather than reciting his achievements in medicine and physics. Among the most important of his philosophical works are On Divine Science and e Miracles of the Prophets. However, most of what we know about him came through the books of those who responded to his claims. Al-Razi did not believe in prophethood, and took it upon himself to prove the contradictions within holy books, beginning with the Torah, and moving on to the Bible and then the Quran. He soon moved on to dealing blows to the remaining oriental religions, such as Zoroastrianism and Manicheanism. Al-Razi believed that the role of prophethood and the prophets is con ned to the value of the mind, contending that as long as God had granted people minds and distinguished them from the rest of creation by providing them with the abil-
ity to discover good and evil, people did not need prophets to teach them laws and morals. Al-Razi believed that the human mind was capable of comprehending the existence of God through creation, and as such there is no need to send a prophet to teach people the way to God. He attempted presented counter-arguments to his own claims, for instance, in light of God’s wisdom and justice, which religious people believe in, it is imperative to provide his creation with equal capacity to discover good and evil. is same argument states that if God were to distinguish between people in this regard, this would create discord between them, which is what we witness between those of di erent religions and sects, with dispute, con ict, and bloodshed. In al-Razi’s opinion, the cause of this is not a lack of understanding among religious people, but rather a problem within the idea of prophethood itself. In his opinion, prophets preach laws and ideas that are not open for discussion on the basis that they are divine in nature, and as such are sancti ed. He considered that much of the messages relayed by prophets contradict human nature, and the ideal of peace between humanity. e idea that each religion claims to the only one who has the truth, naturally led to discord and sparring between sides attempting to monopolize the concept of truth. He also argued that religious people see people within a hierarchy, where some are more favored than others. Within this hierarchy, prophets are the most noble and are entitled to their place above all others. However, in al-Razi’s eyes, this did not evince prophethood, as he viewed people as equal in their capacity for knowledge, with the only thing distinguishing them being their diligence in seeking knowledge, as well as their personal capacity in utilizing their minds. Al-Razi also explored the di erences between the prophets themselves in terms of the beliefs they hold, whereby some deify Christ, while others believe him to be human, and others, such as jews, see him as an in del. As such, al-Razi questions how God could send prophets with such contradictory messages. Finally, al-Razi did not see any justi cation in the attempt to explain people’s beliefs through prophecy to validate them. People submit to their inherited beliefs and do not bother to examine them. ey submit to those beliefs out of habit, until these beliefs become instinctual and second-nature to people with the passing of generations. People fear the assault

of religious gures and their authority, or are deceived by the attractive appearance of preachers. For Al-Razi the large numbers of believers does not validate the belief. Among al-Razi’s objections to the holy books was his opposition to the passages in the Torah in which God commands the Jews to kill and legitimates the bloodshed of other peoples. He also expresses objection to drawing comparisons between the divine gure of God with a person who enjoys the smell of grilled meats and sacri ces, or the comparison to an old man with greying hair, stating that this contradicts the Prophet Moses’ a rmations that God is older than time, was not created, and can neither be bene ted nor harmed. Al-Razi further objects to Christ’s statement: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to ful ll them,” [Matthew 5:17] in which he refers to Moses’ Torah. Al-Razi observes that Jesus Christ then goes on to negate most of the laws that came in the Torah, from the sancti cation of the Sabbath, to the act of vengeance, and so on. rough this, he attempts to prove the contradictions of the Bible, and does not stop there, but also attacks the Doctrine of Trinity and Unity in Christianity, considering them

B.C.’s gang task force said it’s common to see young kids involved in street-level gangs, also known as subgroups.
Sta Sgt. Lindsay Houghton said the youngest child they’ve dealt with was a 10-yearold student selling cocaine at an elementary school. “It was shocking, but I’m not surprised anymore,” Houghton told Global News. “When someone asks (a child) to de-

Houghton said gang members understand that children won’t be sent to jail when they are caught, and, on the other hand, the kids feel like they’re invincible and don’t mind taking risks.
e bulk of street-level gang activity, mainly selling small amounts of illicit drugs, is done by young people between the ages of 16 and 22. ” e main thing is that kids can get their driving licence at 16,” Houghton said.
Shane Knox, a former United Nations gang
While speaking to the media in Lahore, he said the JUI-F believed that both the 2018 and 2024 elected were “rigged”.

member and drug runner in downtown Vancouver, who is also a speaker at KidsPlay, backs the notion that young people are easily manipulated and that money, power and acceptance can entice kids to join gangs. He said he rst became involved with streetlevel gangs when he was in Grade 6.
“I was a gang member when I was in Grade 6, 12 years old, my rst gang. From there it was street-level gangs before I ended up hanging with the guys from the UN,” Knox said.

to be incoherent and contradictory. He then criticizes Islam, for what he perceives to be the personi cation of the divine gure in verses such as “ e Most Merciful sat on His rone,” and “eight angels will, that day, bear the rone of your Lord above them.” He also denied the linguistic inimitability of the Quran, responding to these claims by questioning whether anybody could nd works comparable to those of Galen and Ptolemy. In doing so, he attempted to draw forth the idea that a person’s linguistic style is like a ngerprint, and di ers according to the speaker or writer. Abdel Rahman Badawi believes that al-Razi disregarded the claims of the Mu’tazila school of theology who argued that these verses had esoteric interpretations di erent from their apparent meanings, thereby denying the idea of personi cation or comparison. Al-Razi believed these to be merely attempts to rectify the status of these verses. He also critiqued the abundance of stories about the Prophet Muhammad in the Hadiths, hypothesizing that if a single person in the long chain of the Prophet’s storytellers were to make one slip of the tongue, the entire story would in turn fall apart. As such, he believes that this led to a large degree of contradiction in the stories about the
prophet, exempting himself from taking the Hadiths at face value.
Abu Alaa al-Ma’arri
Described as the poet of the mind in the history of Arab literature, he was known for upholding the value of the mind over customs and traditions, and his faith in people’s ability to distinguish between good and evil, without the need for religion. He wrote: But some hope a divine leader with prophetic voice Will rise amid the gazing silent ranks. An idle thought! ere’s none to lead but reason, To point the morning and the evening ways. He went as far as to deny the holy books of the Abrahamic religions: Religion and disbelief; news enlightens Amid testaments of the Torah and the Bible, Each generation condemned by untruths, Will guidance one day nd a generation? He appears to have wavered between doubt and faith in numerous stages. Yet, he never doubted the existence of God, and always spoke of his blessings and characteristics. Taha Hussein wrote in his book ,“together with Abi El Alaa in his Prison” that al-Ma’arri believed in God’s existence and spoke of him in the manner of an observant, ascetic, and truthful believer.
Jaber bin Hayyan
Jaber
bin Hayyan was a great chemist. Abdel Rahman Badawi mentions that Orientalist historian Paul Kraus recognized bin Hayyan’s great contributions to the study of chemistry in Greece, having formulated a scienti c methodology comparable to those developed by modern scientists in Europe. Based on his achievements in this eld, he arrived at the belief that chemistry is capable of creating lifelike creatures, almost as a forbearer of modern attempts at arti cial intelligence. His belief caused him to be perceived as a non-believer and an atheist.
e Ribald (Mujaan) Poets
This group of poets came to be known as the Ribald, or Mujaan Poets. e most notorious of whom was Abu Nawas. ey lived under the second caliphate of the Abbasid Empire, and do not seem to espouse a clear ideology toward religion. e majority of the literature on them suggested a disdain for religious commandments among these poets, and that they attached human happiness to material things, rather than spirituality and divine concepts.
