Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz is recommending pension funds get ready for a new normal: neutral interest rates lower than they were before the financial crisis. Poloz told a Wall Street audience Tuesday that the fate of neutral rates — the levels he said will prevail once the world economy recovers — remain unknown, but they will almost certainly be lower than previously thought. The central banker made the comment during Continued on Pg 2

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif faces a heavy grilling for he holds the position of trust of his people in the parliamentary democracy. According to the Panama leaks, Prime Minister Sharif’s children Maryam, Hasan and Hussain were owners or had the right to authorise transactions for several companies. The leaks revealed the financial wheeling and dealings of over 200 Pakistanis including prominent politicians and businessmen (Gulf News). Serious allegation: Sharif has said his children have done nothing illegal, but opponents accuse the family of using the tax haven to launder stolen money and dodge taxes.(reuters.com) Surprisingly, the trail of his London properties goes all the way back to the early nineties when his children were still minors, however the PM infers that he cannot be blamed/ accused of what belongs to his children. Objection: Chairman Imran Khan (PTI) said the government had set the terms of reference (ToRs) for the commission on its own without any consultation with the opposition and ignored the demand for authorities to hire an international forensic audit firm to assist in the probe. (Gulf News) PM Sharif talks about his Pakistani-ism, his status as “son of the soil,” born, raised and educated there. He conveniently
E D I T O R I A L
keeps forgetting that the Panama Papers are about his family’s extensive holdings which have been safely stashed abroad---just in case. The fact, Mayfair properties and the hidden offshore companies owned by his children, unveils his Pakistaniism with utmost clarity. Legally speaking, the onus of proof lies upon the prime minister to prove that the facts established by the Panama Papers do not violate the relevant laws. This means he will still need to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the highest judicial panel that the moral norms that attach to the highest executive office of public trust were not violated. He cannot be off the hook unless Pakistani public opinion is re-generated in his favour. Of course, the issues of morality and legality are of serious nature. Although, the PM has not been named directly in the leaks, yet the opposition parties are in no mood to compromise. Especially, a tussle between PML-N and the PTI has ensued, and it’s getting rough every hour. In the meanwhile, “point scoring mode” is switched to “on” position, and the political wrangling among the other political parties is getting bad to worse already. Naturally, time is ripe for the newly formed political party to jump on the band wagon: A break away from the MQM, Pakistan SarZameen Party (PSP)
is already signalling to the opposition parties to get active. The PSP chief Mustafa Kamal while addressing a sizeable crowd at Bagh-e-Jinnah Karachi, called for overhauling the hierarchy of power in the city, stressing that security operations alone are not the solution to combating terrorism. Maybe, he is right for having some workable solution without involving the security forces. Problem is the PTI hasn’t been able to establish its hold in Sindh and failed in Punjab as well. Popularity graph is favourable for the PSP in the province of Sindh as MQM and the PPP are losing ground gradually. Now, the civil society and its institutions are obligated to generate political, judicial and investigative activity appropriately with the help of military having to take an active role within the constitutional limits. The prime minister must step down for a fairer enquiry: But, it’s up to the judicial-panel to decide, in the light of an investigative audit’s findings if any wrongful activity (illegality or immorality) has actually taken place, and whether or not they render the person concerned (PM Nawaz) disqualified from holding office of public trust. In the light of developing scenario, mood of politicking is gaining ground, and the antiPML-n momentum is progressing indeed:
But, MQM now is in no position to, violently or otherwise, obstruct Kamal’s rallies or stop people joining them, but his recent show did not do enough. A considerable disillusionment with the MQM is noticeable; the PSP is yet to prove that it’s the one that offers a meaningful alternative. Technocratic Mustafa Kamal has tried to bring coverage to the PSP by staging a large press conference every time a new politician joins his party. Caution: Again, the PSP can learn from the PTI, for it is unclear whether the scramble to get “Electables” as members would do any good in the long run. Conclusion: There are a lot of allegations against the prime minister of Pakistan and corruption is at its peak, but developing the economic corridor and orange line projects are also a positive reality in the best interest of Pakistan. Bitter reality is Pakistan has lost billions of dollars in lost revenue due to money transfer to the off shore companies unethically or illegally. Certainly, the political parties are eyeing for an early election. Unfavourable time is ahead for Nawaz Sharif as trust-deficit continues to deteriorate his reputation; this progression of negative development is most likely to facilitate his ouster. a question-and-answer period that followed his speech on global trade growth. Among the reasons, Poloz pointed to the more-pessimistic outlook for potential long-term global growth. The forecast was lowered to 3.2 per cent from four per cent, he said. “That downgrade means the neutral rate of interest will be lower for sure — for a very long time,” said Poloz, who added it could go even lower if economic “headwinds” continue. “Those in the pension business need to get used to it. They need to adapt to it.” Since the 2008 global financial crisis, pension funds around the world have had to contend with market uncertainty, feeble growth and recordlow interest rates. Pension funds use long-term interest rates to calculate their liabilities. The lower the rates, the more money plans need to have to ensure they will be able to pay future benefits. A December report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development said the conditions have “cast doubts on the ability of defined-contribution systems and annuity schemes to deliver adequate pensions.” To cushion the Canadian economy from the shock of lower commodity prices, Poloz lowered the central bank’s key rate twice last year to 0.5 per cent — just above its historic low of 0.25. Poloz
linked the higher neutral interest rates of the past to the baby boom, which he described as a 50-year period of higher labour-force participation and better growth. “Well, that’s behind us,” Poloz told the meeting of the Investment Industry Association of Canada and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. “We don’t have numbers for all this, but you need to be scenario-testing those pension plans and the needs of your clients because the returns simply won’t be there.” But with all the unpredictability Poloz said it remains possible current headwinds could convert into positive forces that would push interest rates back to “more-normal levels” seen prior to the crisis. Earlier Tuesday, Poloz’s speech touched on another aspect of the postcrisis world. He told the crowd they shouldn’t expect to see a return of the “rapid pace of trade growth” the world saw for the two decades before the crisis. Poloz was optimistic, however, that the “striking weakness” in international trade wasn’t a sign of a looming global recession. He said the renewed slowdown in global exports is more likely a result of the fact that big opportunities to boost global trade have already been largely exploited. As an example, he noted China could only join the World Trade Organi-
zation once. Poloz expressed confidence that most of the trade slump will be reversed as the global economy recovers — even if it’s a slow process. “The weakness in trade we’ve seen is not a warning of an impending recession,” said Poloz, a former president and CEO of Export Development Canada. “Rather, I see it as a sign that trade has reached a new balance point in the global economy — and one that we have the ability to nudge forward.” He said there’s still room to boost global trade through efficiency improvements to international supply chains, the signing of major treaties such as the TransPacific Partnership and the creation of brand new companies. Poloz’s speech came a day after Export Development Canada downgraded its outlook for the growth of exports. EDC chief economist Peter Hall predicted overall Canadian exports of goods and services to expand two per cent in 2016, down from a projection last fall of seven per cent. When asked when he sees monetary policy returning to a period of normalization, Poloz replied that he thinks the Canadian economy will return to sound footing some time in 2016. “We’re going to get up to full speed this year,” he said. A senior member of Afghan Taliban has said that the group is not interested if Afghan government officials are attending the Pakistan talks on stuttering peace process with Kabul. “We don’t care if Kabul participates in the meeting, as we already launched our spring offensive and are getting successes against them,” Reuters news agency quoted a Taliban official as saying The comments on Tuesday followed the arrival of a Qatari-based Taliban delegation in Pakistan to meet Pakistani officials. A senior Taliban member based in Pakistan confirmed that a delegation of leaders was in the southern port city of Kara-
chi, holding talks with Pakistani officials. “They arrived on Monday,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity, because the Taliban leadership has not authorised him to discuss the talks with the media. Two members of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, which has played a role in previous attempted peace talks, confirmed the delegation’s presence in Pakistan. “Our people held a meeting with Pakistani officials and I am sure they may meet the Chinese on Tuesday,” said one of the Qatar-based leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity, also because he is not authorised to discuss the talks. In Kabul, the
Afghan government has been frustrated by what it sees as Islamabad’s refusal to honour a pledge to force Taliban leaders based in Pakistan to join the talks, or face military action. “We are aware that Taliban delegations are in Pakistan, but we will not go there until Pakistan fulfils the promises that they made,” said Dawa Khan Mina Pal, a spokesman for Afghan president Ashraf Ghani. On Monday, Ghani said the opportunity for peace talks “will not be there forever” and urged Pakistan to fight Taliban groups on its soil that rejected Continued on Pg 10 peace. Afghani-

Besides handling the Panama Papers issue through its legal brains, the ruling PML-N has also decided to mobilise its party cadre for politically fighting it with opponents. Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shahbaz are all holding various
meetings, jointly and separately, with district t i level leadership of the party as well as parliamentarians asking them to present a “true” picture of the issue to the masses. In other words, the party cadre is being asked to take the government version of the Panama leaks down to the grassroots level so that the masses cannot be “misled” by the political opponents, says a PML-N official. The district leaders have also been asked to make preparations for holding large public meetings without any prior notice, he says. According to him, the public meetings will be mostly held in provinces other than Punjab to avert the likely negative image to be created by the “propaganda” that the state machinery and resources are being used for the purposes. He says the public meetings in Punjab will be held only if the political fight touches its last bounds. Meanwhile, the PML-N must be heaving a sigh of relief after JI’s Sirajul Haq has said the campaign against corruption is not against democracy and the Tehrik-i-Istiqlal, which so far had been a staunch critic of the Sharifs, has opposed the call of the opposition for resignation of prime minister when Nawaz has met their demand for writing to the chief justice of Pakistan to set up a commission. Rehmat Khan Wardag says the opposition is unjustifiably making an issue of the terms of reference. He requests all the political rivals not to go to such an extent that may endanger the very democratic system as well as the ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor. Source : Dawn
Unit 2&3 12960-84 Ave, Surrey More than 400 Pakistanis identified in the Panama Papers owning offshore companies will be named on May 9 that coincides with the worldwide release of a searchable database by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) with information on more than 200,000 companies. A whistleblower had leaked this data to a leading German newspaper, Suddeutsche Zeitung, that further collaborated with over 100 media partners through the ICIJ having a network of members in over 60 countries. This correspondent made all-out efforts to find the records of Pakistanis who were found operating in multi-layered secrecy, either through proxy shareholders or by registering their correspondence addresses in foreign countries to hide their identity. Nevertheless, the ownership of some companies are untraceable like Askari Limited and Baradar Corporation. Although, politicians attract more attention than others, the business class forms a majority in the list as they have been found using tax havens like the British Virgin Islands, Seychelles, Panama, NIUE and other such jurisdictions for transferring profits abroad, purchasing properties and opening bank accounts in Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Ireland and other such places. Karachi leads in terms owners of offshore companies and Lahore follows. Majority of them identified by their addresses in Pakistan are residents of Defence Housing Authority in both cities. The database will likely be the largest ever release of secret offshore companies and the people behind them, said the ICIJ in its announcement. The data comes from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, one of the top players in the offshore world, and includes information about companies, trusts, foundations and funds incorporated in 21 tax havens, from Hong Kong to Nevada in the United States. It links to people in more than 200 countries and territories. From 2 pm EDT (1800 UTC) on May 9, users will be able to search through the data and visualize the networks around thousands of offshore entities, including,

The Panama Papers investigation revealed the secret offshore dealings of world leaders and other politicians as well as criminals and celebrities. It exposed the role of big banks in facilitating secrecy and tax evasion. And it showed how companies and individuals blacklisted in the US and elsewhere for their links to terrorism, drug trafficking and other crimes were able to do business through offshore jurisdictions. Since its release, the Panama Papers investigation triggered official inquiries in multiple countries and put pressure on world leaders and other politicians to explain their connections to offshore companies. The Prophetic (PBUH) Ascension and Humanism
By: Macksood cks cksood ksoo ood od d Aftab Afftab A f One off the O h most remarkable k bl events in the history of the world was the Night Journey and Ascension. This Journey is not only spectacular because of what it meant to the Prophet (s), but also for what it means for rest of humanity. According to the accounts in the Quran and Prophetic narrations, the Prophet (s) was taken overnight from Mecca to Jerusalem,. “Holy is He Who carried His servant by night from the Holy Mosque (in Mecca) to the farther Mosque (in Jerusalem.) (Quran 17:1) There he led all the other Prophets (including Abraham, Moses, David and Jesus) in prayers. After which he began the Ascension, seeing many amazing things including heaven and hell, and meeting many of the prior Prophets on the way. Finally, (as described by al-Mubarakpuri in the Sealed Nector) “he was then presented to the Divine Presence and experienced the thrill of witnessing the Divine Glory and Manifestation at the closest possible propinquity.” God describes his astonishing experience during the Ascension in the Quran, While he was in the highest part of the horizon: Then he approached and came closer, And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or nearer; So did God convey
at He (meant) ( to His Servant what to convey. The in Th Prophet’s P h ’ mind i d and d heart h i no way falsified that which he saw. Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? (Quran 53:7-12).For the lover of God there could be no greater pleasure than an invitation by the beloved. It is a returning to God sought by humankind ever since the primordial covenant in which they were asked by God: “Am I not your Lord?” and they replied “Yes! We do testify!” (Quran 7:172). The Prophet (s) was granted what the rest of humanity is longing for. All of this happened within a matter of a few seconds of earthly time, and then he was back in Mecca. The pagan Meccans mocked him at the unbelievable “fairy tale” he recounted. For his early followers this was a test, would they trust the Prophet (s)? Abu Bakr, his closest companion at the time, passed without hesitation by stating, “if Muhammad (saw) said it, then it is true.” Trust in the Prophet (s) was to become the test of faith. The unique honor of this magnificent journey attests to the Prophet’s (s) status as the beloved of God and the perfect human being. He is the model for the rest of humanity to emulate. Through him, however, the rest of humankind is also elevated, as one of theirs is honored by the Creator and Sustainer of the worlds. For Iqbal, this humanism is reinforced by the actual nature of the prophetic experi-
Allama Tahir ul Qadri The lecture. Shaykh-ul-Islam made the comment that the night of Mi`raj was the happiest night for Holy Prophet (saw), as this was the night when Holy Prophet (saw) met Allah. The Mi`raj of Holy Prophet (saw) took place in three parts, each corresponding to the tri-dimension persona of Holy Prophet (saw). The first part of the journey was from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa as is mentioned in the first verse of Surah Bani Isra`il. This part of the Journey was to be known as the Isra. This journey was related to the outward physical dimension of Holy Prophet`s (saw) bashariyyah [Humanity]. Holy Prophet (saw) came with a bodily form to this earth so that he may give us i.e. Mankind, fayd [blessings] in the form of hidayah [guidance]. This mi`raj relating to the bashariyyah was concluded when Holy Prophet (saw) led the anbiyah [prophets] in prayer and became their Imam. The second part of the journey, which is known as the Mi`raj, was from Masjid alAqsa to Sidrat al-Muntaha. This journey was in relation to the ruhanniyyah [spirituality]
and nuraniyyah [the light] of Holy Prophet (saw). It was here at the point of Sidrat alMuntahah that Holy Prophet (saw) became Sayyid al-Nur [Master of the Lights]; he became the leader of the whole of Alim alKhalq [World of Creation] from the bashr [mankind] to the malaikah [angels]. The last and final part of the journey was from Sidrat al-Muntaha to Qaba Qawsain aw Adnah; this part of the journey according to Shaykh Nizamuddin Awliyah is called I`raj. The I`raj is related to the haqiqah [reality] of the Holy Prophet (saw), which is known only to Allah and his Prophet (saw). It was at this point that the mi`raj of Holy Prophet (saw) in relation to the tri-dimensions was completed. Here at qaba qawsain that Holy Prophet (saw) met Allah and had seen him with not only with his eyes but also with his heart. In the remaining parts of the lecture Shaykhul-Islam went through many subtle points relating to the night journey. For example, a tafsir of the verses of Surah Tin was given. This tafsir [commentary] was unique, as Shaykh-ul-Islam was the first muffasir [Com-

ence while at the climax of his journey. At the point of the highest ascent, where he is in the closest proximity to his Lord, Muhammad (s) maintains his individuality. The Quran describes his state as: ‘His eye turned not aside, nor did it wander‘ (Quran 53:17). The Prophet (s) did not find himself losing his own identity in God but rather he was able to, in Iqbal’s words, “retain full self-possession, even in the case of a direct contact with the all-embracing Ego.” Others, as Iqbal writes in poetic form, such as Moses on Mount Sinai were unable to absorb God’s majesty and collapsed:‘Moses fainted away by a mere surface illumination of Reality. Thou seest the very substance of Reality with a smile!’ In this Prophetic achievement, there is great hope for humanity. There is a message of humanism, of possibility and of great po-
mentator of the Holy Qur`an] to relate these verses to Mi`raj. In these verses Allah takes oaths by the tin [fig], zaytun [olive], tursinin [Mount Sinai] and the Balad al-ameen [The sanctified land]. The fig here relates to Sham [Syria], whilst the olive relates to the land of Falastene [Palestine], the Mount Sinai is the mountain in which Musa (as) talked directly to Allah, and the sanctified land is Makkah, from where the night journey started from. All these things that Allah has taken oaths from are all related to the Isra. The journey started from Makkah, and on the way Holy Prophet (saw) stopped at Syria, which is where Ibrahim (as) was buried; he (saw) then went to Bayt al-Lahm [Bethlehem], which was where Isa (as) is buried, in Palestine. And then Holy Prophet (saw) visited Mount Sinai, where Musa (as) talked to Allah and had received Shariah. All of these stops are significant as they signify that Holy Prophet (saw) is the master of the whole of mankind, and that the Shariah of Ibrahim (as), Musa (as), and Isa (as) is contained in
ve and and earth ear rtth,, ev eeven God tential. The heavens earth, himself hi lff is i within i hi h reach h for those who aim to perfect themselves and seek the Almighty. The journey, however, does not end with the Prophet’s (s) experience of God. It continues with his return to earth. He returns with a renewed sense of purpose to better humanity with his Divine message and beautiful character. We learn then that a spiritual return to God is not sufficient; rather it is merely a necessary landmark in man’s larger journey to engage with the world around us to affect positive change. A change, man is capable of, which will ultimately lead to God’s pleasure. May the peace, blessings and prayers of God be upon His beloved Prophet (s), the final Messenger and our Master Muhammad (s). Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says meeting NATO spending targets is under consideration Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump doesn’t hesitate to shoot from the hip on a host of public policy issues, but his comments Wednesday about the efficacy of NATO have reverberated throughout defence circles and could have consequences for Canada. At the core of his criticism of the multilateral alliance is that the United States foots the bill for far too much of the alliance’s defence capacity, and other member nations — including Canada — are “freeloaders” for failing to contribute their fair share of domestic military spending. “It’s obsolete and too many people are getting a free ride,” Trump said Tuesday night after racking up lopsided victories in five presidential primaries. “Frankly, they have to put up more money. We are paying disproportionately. It’s too much. It’s a different world than it was when we originally conceived of the idea.”He has
A New Democrat MP says the Canada Revenue Agency twice mailed batches of private information — including names and social insurance numbers — to the wrong people in his riding. Charlie Angus has asked the office of federal privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien to investigate the apparent violations. In a letter to the commissioner’s office, Angus says the revenue agency mailed a package April 6 to several constituents in Kirkland Lake, Ont., containing the names, SINs, addresses and phone numbers of five people. Five days later, the same constituents were mailed a second package with similar personal information about 11 people. “They were pretty stunned when they received them,” said Angus, who has often criticized the federal agency over privacy lapses. He called the latest incidents completely unacceptable, saying they involved the sort of information that — if it fell into the wrong hands — could lead to fraud and identity theft. The revenue agency had no immediate comment. In his latest annual report, Therrien urged federal agencies to put more rigorous safeguards in place to protect sensitive personal information. The commissioner underscored a record-high number of federal government data breaches disclosed to his office. Federal institutions reported 256 breaches in 2014-2015,

also argued that NATO does not adequately address the pressing problems of our time, notably Islamic terrorism, but is instead focused on an older adversary, Russia, and its continental encroachment. Canada’s patched-up military: Too few dollars, too many missions Harjit Sajjan names blue-ribbon panel to review Canada’s defence policy Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says he will not reduce the size of the military ۔He doubled down Wednesday, during one of his first scripted policy speeches in Washington, saying that if NATO allies don’t meet the spending targets they should get out of the alliance and defend themselves against security threats without relying on American firepower. “The countries we are defending must pay for the cost of this defence, and if not, the U.S. must be prepared to let these countries defend themselves. We have no choice,” he said. Source: CBC News
up from 228 the year before. It marked the first time institutions were required to report significant data breaches to the commissioner. As in previous years, the leading cause of breaches was accidental disclosure, a risk Therrien said can often be managed by following proper procedures. In 2013 the privacy commissioner’s office audited the Canada Revenue Agency, focusing on its access controls to personal information. The privacy watchdog made 13 recommendations in areas including monitoring of employee access rights, threat and risk assessments for information-technology systems and ensuring the privacy impacts of new programs are assessed. The agency agreed with the commissioner’s recommendations, and the watchdog made plans to follow up on progress this year. Angus said the revenue agency needs to implement better training of personnel and impose stricter controls over information. Source: Global News
European leaders say a new deal with Turkey to stop refugees and migrants from making dangerous journeys is working. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Union officials visited a refugee camp in southeastern Turkey on Saturday in an attempt to bolster the controversial deal. Merkel, accompanied by Donald Tusk, the EU president, and Frans Timmermans, European Commission vice president, visited a camp in Nizip - near the Syrian border - to inaugurate an EU-funded project in support of Syrian children and hold talks with Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkish prime minister. Tusk praised Davutoglu and his government, saying his visit to the camp had shown him that Turkey “is an example for the whole world on how we should treat refugees”. Tusk said the EU will spend €1bn ($1.1bn) this summer on projects to improve the lives of Syrian refugees. The media were not allowed into the Nizip camp to talk to refugees. But speaking to Al Jazeera through the fence, Syrians asked if they wanted to stay there or go to Europe responded with one word: Leave. In a deal agreed to last month, the 28-member EU is offering Turkey a package of incentives - from billions in refugee aid to progress on visa-free access to the bloc for Turkish citizens - in exchange for help in returning refugees. Turkey, with 2.7 million registered Syrian refugees, is host to the largest number of refugees in the world. About 280,000 of them live in camps. Praised by Merkel and EU leaders but called inhumane by critics, the deal is aimed at discouraging people smuggling via treacherous sea routes by cutting off the main migration trail from the Middle East to Europe. “Our goal is not only to stop illegal migration, but for refugees to have more opportunities near their home,” Merkel said at Gaziantep University. She said she had been “very impressed” with Turkish efforts at the Nizip camp. She said that EU-funded projects that form part of the migration deal are intended to provide opportunities for all Syrians living in Turkey - not just those living in camps - and to pave the way for “all children to have an education”. In Gaziantep, surveys of refugees by the Syria Relief Network, a coalition of NGOs, suggest that only a third of the children go to school. For
his part, Davutoglu said Turkey had met all its responsibilities in the deal, such as issuing refugee work permits, and rejected claims that Syrians were being sent back to their homeland against their will. “We have fulfilled our side [of the deal],” he said, adding that visa-free access to the EU for its citizens is “essential”. Davutoglu said the deal had already had a significant impact and that the number of people illegally crossing the Aegean Sea each day had dropped from 6,000 in November to 130. Turkish leaders have previously warned that the agreement will collapse if the EU fails to grant visa-free access. The EU has faced severe criticism over the deal, including from the UN refugee agency UNHCR, parliamentarians at the Council of Europe, opposition politicians in Germany and rights watchdogs. Many say Turkey is not a safe country to return refugees to. “Instead of touring a sanitised refugee camp, EU leaders should look over the top of Turkey’s new border wall to see the tens of thousands of Syrian refugees blocked on the other side,” said Judith Sunderland, of Human Rights Watch’s Europe division. “Then they should go to the detention centre where people deported from Greece are held incommunicado.” Merkel is also under fire for her decision earlier this month to grant a Turkish request to allow the prosecution of German comedian Jan Boehmermann, who mocked President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on television. Under German law, a person can be prosecuted for insulting a foreign head of state. It was the latest incident involving the media to strain diplomatic relations. In March, a public broadcaster showed a satirical song that poked fun at Erdogan, prompting Turkey to summon the German ambassador. Merkel said that she had addressed Turkey’s recent decision to deny accreditation to a German TV journalist from public broadcaster ZDF, which is also embroiled in the defamation scandal. “We spoke very openly and very honestly ... and many things were said,” Merkel said. Merkel’s popularity has slipped in Germany as critics accuse her of ceding to Turkish pressure because she needs the country’s help in halting the refugee influx. Source: Al-Jazeera
stan has long accused Pakistan of actively harbouring the Afghan Taliban leadership on its soil. In an unusually candid admission, Sartaj Aziz, Adviser to the Pakistani Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, admitted that Islamabad has considerable influence over the Taliban because its leaders live in the country. “We have some influence over them because their leadership is
in Pakistan and they get some medical facilities. Their families are here,” he said. “We can use those levers to pressurise them to say, ‘Come to the table’. But we can’t negotiate on behalf of the Afghan government because we cannot offer them what the Afghan government can offer them.” Source: Al-Jazeera

Sheikh Al-Muqri Al-Qari Bashir Siddique, who has a legacy of over 51 years of service to Tajweed & Qiraa’ah in Masjid-AnNabawi, Medinah visited BC last week. He has Ijaazah from “The Father of Qiraa’ah” Sheikh Khalil Al Husary. He is also the teacher of many of the Imams of The Haramain including Sheikh Abdul Muhsin AlQasim, Sheikh Ali Jabir, Sheikh Hussein Aal Sheikh and others with one of the highest Saheeh transmissions in Tajweed & Qiraa’ah. On Friday April 22, Sheikh visited Jameh Masjid Surrey where he gave the Friday sermon (Khutba) and led the Friday prayer. After that he visited Darul Ihsan Institute in Surrey after which he joined a small public gathering in Afghan Chopan Restaurant Lunch which was arranged by BCMA Chairman Surrey chapter Mr. Amar Faridi with a group of board members. Miracle Media got a chance to bring up few concerns regarding the decline of Muslim Ummah Mr. Pirzada asked the Sheikh that nowadays, in Umrah and Hajj, masses are increasing day by day but quality of worship (Ibadah) is decreasing, why is that? He also asked the Sheikh for his opinion on the fact that at every Hajj the Imam delivers Hajj sermon (khutba) at Arafat for peace, unity, brotherhood and love for all mankind, but just after Hajj all pilgrims forget the teachings of Quran o Sunnah, and we see that in form of crisis in many Islamic states, Sheikh Bashir recognized that these were important concerns. He said that Hajj and Umrah have four pillars. If one pillar falls
L O C A L down, imagine the impact. Those pillars are: 1. Niyyat (intention) should be for sake of only Allah(SWT) 2. The money which you are spending for Hajj and Umrah should be pure Halal not from Haram sources 3. Perform your Hajj and Umrah as per our Prophet Mohammad (saw) did. 4. Ask for Pardon (Tauba) from the heart The litmus test to judge your pardon’s acceptance is that if he or she leaves all the bad habits then it means it has been accepted. If he or she continues life in the same way as before, then the result is in front of them everywhere. Halal living is most important for all of us, so feed your kids halal. Analyze yourself: is your earning fully Halal or doubtful with some haram sources. Think about what you are consuming and earning. Other reason behind all of this is that we have discarded the teachings of Holy Quran. It has three rights. 1. Reading Quran properly is fundamental obligation on every man and woman. If we do not read it properly, then we change its meaning. If we change the meaning then it is offending Allah (swt), It does not mean that everyone should become Qari or Hafiz ul Quran, but you have to correct the pronunciation of the words of Holy Quran. 2.Understand the message of Quran. 3. Implement the teachings of the Quran in our life. He then addressed the decline of Ummah and attributed it to our differences in com-
munity with neighbours, groups and other individuals. What is its Cure? We should establish sound institutions for our future generations, which offer high quality of religious teachings. We should fulfill the rights of Allah (SWT) and prophet Mohammad (saw), as well as rights of relatives, neighbours and all other people. We have learn to differentiate between halal and haram. When all of this comes together then you may be on the right way of Islam but it will take some time, may be 20-25 years. The Sheikh said that for our children’s future, there is only one solution, which is that you build your own Islamic schools, Colleges and universities where children are taught the regular government approved curriculum as well as Islamic teachings as per Quran and Sunnah with training. Please encourage the Islamic institutions.Sheikh Bashir also said that we need to learn how to unite together. We are all brothers and sisters. Think about it: Our father is one -Adam(A.S). The Sheikh said that his visit in Vancouver
has been very pleasant, and it really looks like paradise on the earth. From immigration process at the airport till this moment, I have received great reception with love. You are very lucky that you live in such a beautiful country, so live in such a way which benefits mankind, have respect for others and adhere to values. At the end, BCMA President Daud Ismail gave an honorary plaque to Sheikh Bashir at his visit in BC. After the Surrey visit, Sheikh Bashir met many Huffaz and teachers in Richmond Masjid and led Maghrib prayer there.

Staffan de Mistura’s estimate, which far exceeds those given by UN in the past, is not an official number. The UN special envoy for Syria has estimated that 400,000 people have been killed throughout the last five years of civil war, urging major and regional powers to help salvage a crumbling ceasefire. Explaining that the death toll was based on his own estimate, Staffan de Mistura said on Friday that it was not an official UN statistic.“We had 250,000 as a figure two years ago,” he said. “Well, two years ago was two years ago.”The UN no longer keeps track of the death toll due to the inaccessibility of many areas and the complications of navigating conflicting statistics put forward by the Syrian government and armed opposition groups. In the latest violence, at least 30 civilians were killed on Saturday in regime and rebel bombardment of areas across Syria. Twelve people were killed in air strike on the northern city of Aleppo, a local civil defence official said. State news agency SANA said that three

civilians were killed and 17 wounded in rebel shelling of government-held areas of Aleppo. The Syrian Human Rights Observatory said 13 others died in shelling of the rebel-held town of Douma, east of Damascus, while two men were killed in regime air strikes on Talbisseh in central Homs province. OPINION: Syrian Civil War - Negotiating in bad faith De Mistura also appealed to all involved parties to help revamp negotiations between the government of President Bashar al-Assad and opposition groups. Syria gym offers respite from fighting “Yes we do need certainly a new ISSG at ministerial level,” the envoy said, referring to the International Syria Support Group which includes the United States, Russia, the EU, Iran, Turkey and Arab states. De Mistura compared the apparently stalled political talks on Syria’s future, the unravelling ceasefire agreement and the still limited humanitarian relief deliveries to the three legs of a table. “The level of danger to the table made of

When all three of them are finding some difficulty, it’s time to call the ISSG.” He gave no date or venue for the high-level ISSG. OPINION: US should not arm rebels The envoy said he planned to continue peace talks next week, despite the “worrisome trends on the ground”, adding that he would seek clarity from government negotiators about their interpretation of political transition. Yemen’s government forces are battling alQaeda fighters in the country’s south, aiming to push back advances the group has made during a year-long civil war for which “constructive” peace talks are currently under way in Kuwait. Dozens of fighters loyal to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) were killed in the clashes, residents and a military source said on Saturday, while a drone strike killed two others further north. Fighting across Yemen has killed more than 6,800 people and driven more than 2.5 million from their homes since March last year, last opportunity,” he said. AQAP has taken advantage of chaos in Yemen since last year to win control over swathes of southern and eastern Yemen, creating a local government there and introducing services. The Houthis have held Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, since September 2014 and their advance prompted an Arab coalition air campaign in support of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government. Despite Ahmed’s positive comments, a government source said disputes continued in the talks over both the agenda and accusations from the government that the Houthis and Saleh’s forces had breached the truce in the city of Taiz. Political disagreements The government wants the Houthis and Saleh’s forces to withdraw from cities and hand over weapons before discussing a solution to the political disagreements. The Houthis and its allies want a unity government to be formed before disarmament talks. according to the UN. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the UN envoy for Yemen, described as “constructive” the first full day of peace talks while calling for a halt to air strikes by an Arab coalition and missile fire by Houthi rebels. He said reinforcing an April 11 ceasefire was essential to the success of the negotiations in Kuwait.Ahmed who spent months getting the rival sides to the negotiating table, said Friday’s talks had been “very constructive”. “There was a consensus on strengthening the ceasefire and the two sides were committed to the need to achieve peace and that this is the
Yemen revolution ‘Our dream was sold’ The UN envoy along with the different factions are trying to work on confidence-building measures and start a political process with the aim of forming a national unity government,” he said.“For the UN this is a very critical moment. They have to seize the opportunity or there is not going to be peace any time soon.”Ahmed, the UN envoy, said the rebels complained of continuing air strikes by the Arab coalition while the government side complained of continued ceasefire violations by the rebels.\
Regional implications
Ahmed said he had contacted Saudi Arabia about the coalition air strikes and they had said the raids were ordered only in response to ceasefire violations by the rebels. “The ceasefire is respected between 70 percent to 80 percent all over Yemen,” he said. The war has taken on regional implications, as Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia accuses regional Shia rival Iran of arming and training the Houthis. Iran says it only provides the rebels with political support, though the US navy says its sailors and allies have seized weapons heading for Yemen from Iran. Source: Al Jazeera and agencies

Headache like no other? If you’re suffering from pain that’s impossible to forget, it’s likely that you are suffering from a migraine. A migraine can happen quickly and the discomfort builds with each minute that passes you by. When the pain strikes, it’s all you can think about. So, let’s explore the signs and symptoms. How a migraine works: What exactly causes a migraine? The precise cause is unclear1 and for each individual person, the triggers can vary. During a migraine, the tissue surrounding your brain
will become swollen and the surrounding blood vessels will expand. This causes intense pressure, an aching sensation and pain. Migraines vs. tension headaches: A migraine is commonly misdiagnosed as a tension headache. It’s important to know the difference between these two different types of pain; that way, you can quickly and efficiently seek the relief you want. The best way to tell the difference between these two types of headaches: *If your headache contains a moderate level of pain that is dull and pressure-like, then it’s likely like li ke a tension headache. *Iff your headache feels *I more like pounding or mo throbbing and you’re exthro th ro periencing symptoms per pe r such suc su c as sensitivity to light or nnausea, you may be experiencing a migraine. per pe r Stages of a migraine: S ta Understanding the stages Und Un d of a migraine can also help he lp you recognize an attack. tack ta ck For most people, a migraine can be divided mig mi g
into the following four stages: *The warning phase can occur hours or days before the onset of the headache.4 This phase is generally common in people that experience frequent migraines. Within this phase, it’s common to feel irritable, depressed, tired and to have excessive yawning or a loss of appetite. *The aura phase. This stage doesn’t occur for everyone; in fact only 1 in 4 people with migraines will have aura5. A migraine with aura will have additional symptoms (which typically occur 30 minutes or less before the headache).6 Auras vary with each individual person, but symptoms typically include: pic ical ally ly iinc nclu lude de:: vi vi-sion loss or changes in vision visi vi sion on (such ((su such ch as as seeseeing flashing or shimmering lights), halluciing llig ight hts) s),, ha hall lluc uciinations, and feelings of nnumbness muscle umbn um bnes esss or m mus uscl clee weakness. *The headache phase. Forensic accounting, forensic accountancy or financial forensics is the specialty practice area of accounting that describes engagements that result from actual or anticipated disputes or litigation. “Forensic” means “suitable for use in a court of law”, and it is to that standard and potential outcome that forensic accountants generally have to work. Forensic accountants, also referred to as forensic auditors or investigative auditors, often have to give expert evidence at the eventual trial. All of the larger accounting firms, as well as many mediumsized and boutique firms and various Police and Government agencies have specialist forensic accounting departments. Within these groups, there may be further subspecializations: some forensic accountants may, for example, just specialize in insurance claims, personal injury claims, fraud, Anti-Money Laundering, construction,or royalty audits. Financial forensic engagements may fall into several categories. For example: •Economic damages calculations, whether suffered through tort or breach of contract; •Post-acquisition disputes such as earnouts or breaches of warranties; •Bankruptcy, insolvency, and reorganization; •Securities fraud; •Tax fraud; •Money laundering; •Business valuation; and •Computer forensics/e-discovery. Forensic accountants often assist in professional negligence claims where they are
assessing and commenting on the work of other professionals. Forensic accountants are also engaged in marital and family law of analyzing lifestyle for spousal support purposes, determining income available for child support and equitable distribution. Engagements relating to criminal matters typically arise in the aftermath of fraud. They frequently involve the assessment of accounting systems and accounts presentation—in essence assessing if the numbers reflect reality. Some forensic accountants specialize in forensic analytics which is the procurement and analysis of electronic data to reconstruct, detect, or otherwise support a claim of financial fraud. The main steps in forensic analytics are (a) data collection, (b) data preparation, (c) data analysis, and (d) reporting. For example, forensic analytics may be used to review an employee’s purchasing card activity to assess whether any of the purchases were diverted or divertible for personal use.

By Yasmin Mogahed I spent my life running after the creation. I have always been what you might call ‘needy’. I needed friends, I needed people. All the time. And I couldn’t handle letdowns. But at the heart of what makes us run after the creation, is simply love. The need to give and receive love. This need has been put in us by the Creator. And every need created by God, has been created for a purpose. The need to give and receive love was created as a driver. A driver that pushes us back to God. You see, we began with God, and God wants us to come back to Him in this life—even before we come back to Him in the next. So He puts inside us, drivers intended to bring us back. Intended to bring us back Home. But our problem is we get lost along the way. We can’t deny the drive; but we get lost because we seek to fulfill it in the wrong way. We look to fulfill that need in the wrong place. The driver was created by God to take us to Him. But instead, that driver takes us towards the creation. And that’s where we get lost. Why do we run after other people? Why do we run after money? Why do we run after status, or power? We run after these things because we want love and respect. And we believe that by attaining these things, we will succeed at getting both love and respect. But there is a fascinating formula that governs this world. And it is very, very simple. Unfortunately, we almost always get this formula wrong. Yes, we all have that same driver inside us, but the human being is hasty. We prefer the immediate over the delayed, the seen over the unseen, the physical over the spiritual. We run first to what we can see and feel and touch. We run first to what we *think* is closer. We do this because while the human being is needy and dependent, the human being is also impatient and weak. We go for what seems closest, easiest, quickest. So we go towards the creation. See, we think that the more we run after this world (dunya)–the more we run after the love of people, and wealth and beauty and status–the more we will have of it. We think that the more intensely we want something, the more likely we are to get it. And when we don’t get it, we become angry—so angry—at God Himself. As though the *intensity* of my wanting, somehow makes me entitled to having. But the more we drown in this false equation, the more we fail at reaching our goal, and the more we miss the true–but simple– equation of love and life. That equation is clear: The more intensely we want the creation itself, the less likely we are to attain it. If it is love you need, and you seek it from the creation, you will never *truly* get it. Or get enough. Anything of the creation sought for its own sake will evade you. And will never fill you. Even happiness itself: The more you run after it, the more it evades you. But if you run to God instead, happiness will run after you. If you run to God instead, the love of people will run after you. If you run to God instead, success will run after you. True success in this life, and the next. If you run to God instead, provision will run after you. This, brothers and sisters, is the secret formula for which tyrants have burned down cities, and kings have searched the world—but never found. This is the secret. The only formula you need to know. In a profound hadith (Prophetic teaching), a man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and said: “O Messenger of God, direct me to an act, which if I do, God will love me and people will love me.” He said: “Detach yourself from the world, and God will love you. Detach yourself from what is with the people, and the people will love you.” [Ibn Majah] Ironically, the less we chase after the approval and love of the people, the more we gain it. The less needy we are of others, the more people are drawn to us and seek our company. This hadith teaches us a profound
L I F E S T Y L E Truth. Only by breaking out of the orbit of the creation, can we succeed with both God—and people. To run to God is a movement of the heart. To run to God is to strive with everything He has given you. Running to God is movement. If you are passive, you are not moving. You are falling. Movement to God, running to God, is to face your heart towards Him in every motion of life. It is to face every goal, every intention, every End towards Him. He becomes the object of your striving. The means of your striving. The ultimate End of your striving. But you keep striving. You keep working to be the best mother you can. The best father. The best neighbor, the best student, daughter, son, employee. This is the legacy of all our Prophets, peace be upon them all. Their bodies were in dunya. Striving. The Prophet (pbuh) was the best leader, the best father, the best husband, the best friend. His body was working hard in dunya. For a while. But his heart was always with Allah. His heart was already in Akhira (Hereafter), even while his body was still here—for a time. His heart was already Home. His heart saw through the illusions of this life. His limbs worked hard. So hard. He bled, and cried, and strived. His body stood until his feet cracked. His body was abused in Ta’if. His body lost sleep, and felt hunger, and thirst, and fever, and pain. And loss. But his heart faced only Allah. And with Allah there is no hunger, thirst, pain, or loss. His body had to strive in different directions; he was a father, a leader, a friend, a husband. But while his body had to strive in all those places, his heart faced only One. Only one direction. His heart faced only God. As Ibrahim (AS) said so beautifully: “Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah.” (6:79) Ibrahim (AS) focused the face of his heart only on Allah. Completely. Haneefan. Completely. You will find that to only partially face your heart to God is to suffer. And that suffering is in proportion to the degree of partial submission. Allah tells us in the Quran: “O you who have believed, enter into submission completely [whole-heartedly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.” (2:208) There is pain in just partial submission. There is a pain in not entering into peace and security—the *only* peace and security—completely. With one’s *whole* heart. There is pain in half a sajdah (prostration). There is a pain in putting your heart (even partially) in anyone else’s hands. And that pain continues until you turn your entire heart *only* in one direction. Until you turn your entire heart *only* towards Him. He becomes the only true aim of your striving. As we say at least 17 times every single day: “You alone do we worship and You alone do we seek for help.” (1:5). Allah is the only true End, and the only true means to that End. No one gets to Allah without Allah. La hawla wa la quwat illa billah: “There is no change and no strength, except by God.” The one who turns his heart completely to God in this way, reaches true freedom. And that person can no longer be harmed by the creation. The fire couldn’t burn Prophet Ibrahim (AS). The ‘fires’ of the creation cannot harm the one who’s heart faces only God. The financial, physical, emotional, social, and psychological fires cannot harm the one who’s heart is *only* with God. Externally, the person might look harmed, but in Reality, such a person is never harmed. The haqiqah of the situation is not harm, but good, as we know from the words of our beloved Prophet (pbuh): “Strange is the case of a believer, there is good for him in everything—and this is only for the believer. If a blessing reaches him, he is grateful to God, which is good for him, and if an adversity reaches him, he is patient which is good for him.” [Muslim] And this is *only* for the believer. This is
only for the one who’s heart is turned completely and *only* in one direction. Remember, Allah says: “O you who have believed, enter into Islam [submission and peacefulness] completely [whole-heartedly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.” (2:208) Enter into peace and security completely. Complete security is only for those who enter *completely*. But remember the heart is not a still entity. The heart is by definition that which turns (hence the Arabic word for heart ‘qalb’ comes from the root which means ‘to turn’). The heart by definition is that which turns. So our object in life is to keep bringing the heart back to focus, back to center, back to God. And we consistently seek God’s help, as the Prophet (pbuh) used to supplicate most of all: “Oh turner of hearts, set our hearts firm on Your deen (way).” This constant reorientation is tawbah. Return. Again and again and again. Until we meet Him. Only the one who gives up this fight, fails. Only the one who—due to complacency or despair—gives up the fight of constantly bringing the heart back to focus, fails in this life and the next. We all want love. From God, and from the creation. We are all running towards something. Ironically, the more we run after the creation, the more the creation runs away
from us! As soon as we stop running after the creation, and reorient, as soon as we start running towards God, the creation runs after us. It’s a simple, simple formula: Run towards the creation, you lose God and the creation. Run towards God, you gain God *and* the creation. Allah is Al Wadud (The Source of Love). Therefore, love comes from God—not people. As one author, Charles F. Haanel, put it: “To acquire love… fill yourself up with it until you become a magnet.” When you fill yourself with the Source of love (Al Wadud), you become a magnet for love. Allah teaches us this in the beautiful hadith Qudsi: “If Allah has loved a servant [of His], He calls Gabriel (on whom be peace) and says: ‘I love So-and-so, therefore love him.’” He (the Prophet pbuh) said: “So Gabriel loves him. Then he (Gabriel) calls out in heaven, saying: ‘Allah loves So-and-so, therefore love him.’ And the inhabitants of heaven love him.” He (the Prophet pbuh) said: “Then acceptance is established for him on earth. (Muslim Bukhari, Malik, & Tirmidhi) We’re all running. But so few of us are running in the right direction. We have the same goal. But to get there, we need to stop. And examine if we are running towards the Source–or just a reflection. Courtesy: http://www.yasminmogahed.com

A little sugar now and then isn’t a big deal to most children. But sugar has been shown to have an effect similar to an addictive drug, and many kids across the United States are in fact addicted to it. Sugar affects children’s short-term behavior and moods and also can seriously affect their long-term health. Here are some ways to help kids cut back. Prevent unrelated cravings Sugar addiction causes tangible cravings, but so do other entirely unrelated factors, such as low blood sugar and thirst. So begin by dealing with them: Make sure kids always get enough protein, healthful fats, other nutrients and water to keep their energy at optimum levels. And watch out for social or psychological conditions — boredom, emotional issues, teenage hormone surges — that might lead to overindulging. Cut the culprits Soda, energy drinks and sports drinks make up 32 percent of an average child’s sugar intake, followed by desserts at 18 percent, fruit drinks at 15 percent, candy at 7 percent and ready-to-eat cereal at 6 percent. The less sugar children consume, the less they are going to crave it. Improve breakfast by adding protein
Y O U T H
and fresh fruit. Switch to 100 percent whole-grain cereal or toast. Use the weekend, rather than a school morning, to introduce a lower-sugar pancake or a new egg dish, as you will probably have more time to cook and to ride out complaints or questions. Stock the fridge with healthful snacks, and don’t regularly buy sugary treats and then tell your kids they can’t have them. It is better to go out for ice cream occasionally than to have a tub of mint chocolate chip in the freezer marked off limits. But do still bake cookies with them once in a while. Divorce dinner from dessert — sweet stuff should never be a reward for eating a healthy dinner. Pick one night a week when the family enjoys dessert together, and allow your children to take turns choosing what will be served. Spoon out appropriate portions, let the children have seconds if they are truly still hungry, and do not judge the amount they eat. Also avoid overeating yourself, and don’t express feelings of guilt after eating. And watch out for hidden culprits in prepared foods. Read labels on these main offenders to be sure they are low in added sugar: yogurts, energy bars, ketchup, sauces (spaghetti, barbecue),
Last month, a world-wide telephone survey was conducted by the UN. A single question was asked:“Would you please give your honest opinion about possible solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?” The survey was a complete failuWWWre because: In Eastern Europe they didn’t know what “honest” meant. In Western Europe they didn’t know what “shortage” meant. In Africa they didn’t know what “food” meant. In China they didn’t know what “opinion” meant. In the Middle East they didn’t know what “solution” meant. In South America they didn’t know what “please” meant. In the USA they didn’t know what “the rest of the world” meant. And in Australia, New Zealand and Britain everyone hung up as soon as they heard the Indian accent.
salad dressings, breads, crackers, peanut butter, infant formula and drinks. Retrain addicted kids Our tastes for overly sweetened flavors are learned, which means they can also be unlearned. Designate the number of “sometimes foods” (sports drinks, ice cream, cookies, hot chocolate — anything with added sugar) you believe is appropriate for your kids to consume in a day or week. If one a day or three a week sounds right to you, that’s fine. Just allow the children to choose what and when, and do not judge them. Your children should be in control. When they use up their daily or weekly allocation, they have to wait for the next day or week. Let them also choose the dinner menu one night a week, the healthy snacks they eat and what gets packed in their lunch. This way they learn to control the food they eat in a balanced way. Remind kids there will always be another chance for something sweet. If
they are afraid they won’t get another Oreo for a long time, they are more likely to eat past the point of satisfaction. If a child has an acute problem with sugar, it is okay to incentivize him or her to kick the habit — with a reward that isn’t food. We are all motivated by an incentive, be it a bonus, a paycheck or kudos for a job well done. Once your child actively agrees to kick his or her sugar habit in return for an established prize, stock a healthy kitchen and start the child on this plan. Set a good example Enjoy all food with your children, never express guilt for enjoying a dessert, and model moderation. It is important to get on the same page as your spouse and be consistent with your food rules and messages. Stay neutral, and do not judge your kids’ choices or mistakes. We are all drawn to desserts and sweeter items at times, and kids are no exception. Lastly, support and encourage children when they make good choices.

The character will be appearing regularly on Baghch-e-Simsim (“Sesame Garden”) — a Sesame Workshop children’s series that’s been on the air in Afghanistan since December of 2011. Zari was introduced to the English-speaking world on social media last week, but it remains unclear if there are future plans to feature her on American Sesame Street. Dawud Walid, Executive Director for the Council of Arab Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Michigan, wouldn’t mind seeing that. “The younger ages are actually the most important, more so than the adults. This is when the world view develops,” Walid told CBS Detroit. “If younger people are exposed to other cultures at an early age, it is more likely to inoculate them, or vaccinate them, against Islamophobia.” Zari is the latest a lineup of international characters, which has also included Mexican, German and Egyptian Muppets, to name a few. Although a Muppet’s religion is not typically discussed, it’s been stated that Zari is Afghani, and Afghanistan has a Muslim population close to 100 percent. Philip Toscano, director of communications for Sesame Workshop, told the New York Times that Zari’s character was based on research in Afghanistan aiming to develop a character that would resonate with viewers there. Some concerns remain, though, about Oscar the Grouch and other detractors. “From what I have seen, unfortunately, there have been some Islamophobic comments like: ‘Is she going to wear a suicide bombing vest,’” Walid said, after taking a look at Twitter on Tuesday. Reaction to the character on social media has been decidedly mixed.

By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor One of the most important keys to a better life is to keep yourself happy, rather than always living to please everyone else. It’s easy to take on a false sense of responsibility, thinking that it’s your job to keep everybody happy, to “fix” this person, to rescue that person or to solve another person’s problem. Certainly, it is noble and admirable to want to help as many people as possible, and it is always good to reach out to others in need. Too often, though, we get out of balance. At the end, we’re doing everything for everybody else, but we’re not taking any time to keep ourselves happy or healthy. Often it is seen that when we try to keep everybody around us happy by trying to meet all their needs, we are the one’s who ends up suffering. Remember that you should not sacrifice your happiness to keep someone else happy. It may sound a little selfish but there’s a tenuous balance here. Your first priority is to take care of yourself. To do so, you must recognize that some people are still not going to be happy no matter what you do for them. no matter how nice you are and no matter how much time and energy you give them. They have their own issues to deal with or things inside that they need to resolve. This
does not mean that you are being selfish or self-centered. We should be givers. There’s a big difference between giving and allowing someone to control you and make you feel guilty until you do what he or she wants. Once again you should not be unhappy simply to keep someone else happy. Again, if you are allowing that, the other person is not the only one at fault. You may have taken on a false sense of responsibility and now are allowing another person to control you. If you are in a relationship where you do the majority of the giving and always encour-age or rescue the other person, that is a clear indication that something is out of balance. You have to make some changes otherwise the relationship will continue to flounder. You must take a stand. You can do it but you need to go to the right person and say,”I care about you, but I’m not going to allow you to keep dumping your problems on me and making my life miserable. I’m not going to let you keep draining all my time and energy. You have to take responsibility.” Remember - You are responsible for keeping yourself happy!! By Asma Ayyaz, Mortgage Broker Yes! Love affections cannot be always clear, they are in shades. I am sure at one time or other we all feel love and hate, anger and love, helplessness and power at the same time for our loved ones. We love the loved ones but at the same time we hate them for doing certain things or actions or taking decisions. Hate here is not hatred, it is representing the unpleasant dislike state. Be careful of colour shades We usually use words for the emotions like love or hate very freely and fluently. Our emotions for same person at different moments or situations are not always same. Many faces of Love I love red colour. ( I do love it for particular I love my car (Because that’s what I can afford at this time and also I need means of transportation). Some are lucky though to get the car they like. I love Pizza (Ya, most easy and convenient meal substitutes for a wholesome meal I love babies (When they are your friends to tolerate them for a shorter time). Jokes apart out of all loves the first on top list is ‘my choice’. It sounds shocking but true. We actually do not know how to love ourselves. We love our likes and dislikes, our ‘wants’. We assume our weaknesses as our love. Attractions and choices and cravings wear the colours of love. But real Love Yes! Real love do exists. It is the one we feel for our parents, children, family, relatives, friends, needy etc. When we feel kindness towards poor and needy, helpless and troubled ones it’s also love. One should have love for
certain things, actions or people because it is the right thing. We love God, motherland, principles of good and rightful. Dangers of Love When our love exceeds or overlooks right or wrong, it is not good for anybody. The best example of this is parents. When they love their children so much so that even they overlook their certain wrong behaviour. Sometimes they do not say anything to their children. When they favour one child above another, they create rift and discontent in family. Many children are affected psychologically by this inequality. We have to show our children by our words and actions that good qualities are necessary for a social life of human beings. When we explain our children to share their toys with the children of guests they learn sharing. When we are kind and caring with elders and other family members and servants they will learn to do so. Parents let us check our boxes first. Email:asmashums@gmail.com

“Now, ladies and gentlemen, can I ask you as well if you could raise three very special cheers for Her Majesty on this special occasion. “And if they’re loud enough it might just work to light the other beacons by spontaneous combustion.” The crowd then gave three cheers. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were driven to Cambridge Gate in Home Park, Windsor, for the lighting of the first in a network of more than 1,260 beacons. She was dressed in a white silk headscarf for her last public engagement of the day before a private black tie dinner hosted by Charles in the Waterloo Chamber of the castle. More than 30 royals were among more than 70 guests joining the Queen for the lavish affair. Charles handed the torch to the Queen and invited her to light the principal beacon - a large brazier on a 20ft (6m) pole at the start of the Long Walk..
The Prince of Wales paid a touching tribute to his mother at the beacon lighting ceremony, wishing her the “most special and happiest of birthdays”. At the Windsor Castle celebration he spoke of the “love and affection” for her throughout the country and the Commonwealth. He called the head of state “Mummy” during his short address - often his affectionate introduction for the sovereign during royal celebrations. As dusk approached on Source: www.telegraph.co.uk her milestone birthday, he said: “Your Majesty, Mummy, I find it very hard to believe you’ve reached your 90th year and I suddenly realised the other day that I’ve known you since you were 22 years old. “This is, ladies and gentlemen, a very special occasion and the beacon Her Majesty is about to light will also represent, as it lights other beacons across the nation, the love and affection in which you are held throughout this country and the Commonwealth. “So, ladies and gentlemen, can we wish Her Majesty the most special and happiest of birthdays on this occasion. And long may you reign over us.

DeMar DeRozan, his teammates and his coaches have all said the same thing during these playoffs: Despite the All-Star swingman’s early struggles, he was eventually going to return to being his dominant self. It was only a matter of time. That time finally came on Tuesday night in Game 5. With the Toronto Raptors looking to snap a 2-2 series deadlock, DeRozan scored a playoff career high 34 points in the team’s 102-99 victory over the Indiana Pacersat Air Canada Centre. The seven-year veteran shot 10-for-22 from the field, drained his first two 3-pointers of the postseason and went 12-for-13 from the free-throw stripe. “DeMar is one of those guys where once his shot starts falling, he’s unstoppable,” Bismack Biyombo said Wednesday at practice. “We all know that. And he showed that from the beginning of the game. He was really aggressive, and I always tell him there’s games when you come y in really aggressive and I just look at Cory
(Joseph) and I say it’s going to be a long night for (the opposition).” It was the type of performance that reminded everyone why the 26-year-old DeRozan was selected as an Eastern Conference All-Star for the second time in his career during the regular season. Now, Toronto is just one victory away from advancing in a best-of-seven series for the first time in franchise history. It just took DeRozan getting his act together. “Being in this league for a while now, you really have to stay level(-headed),” DeRozan said. “You have to, because it can always change quickly and anything can happen, so you have to stay humble, stay mellow and understand you have another opportunity to do more than you did before.” During the first four games of the playoffs, DeRozan had averaged just 13.3 points on 29.6 percent shooting. And in Games 2 and 4, he did not attempt a single free throw. He did not get h v down on himself, however. “I beat myself
The NFL doesn’t see any need to reopen settlement talks with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and the NFL Players Association regarding Brady’s four-game suspension, a league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The source said the NFL doesn’t believe the NFLPA or anyone from Brady’s camp has provided a reason to renew settlement discussions after the suspension was upheld by a federal appeals court earlier this week. The league believes the time for those talks has come and gone, the source said. The league and attorneys for the NFLPA engaged in talks for several months last summer in an attempt to reach a settlement in Brady’s appeal of the suspension for his involvement in the Deflategate scandal. They could not come to an agreement, and on Sept. 3, U.S. District Court Judge Richard M. Berman overturned the suspension. On Monday, a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the suspension. The court ruled 2-1 that commissioner Roger Goodell did not deprive Brady of
“fundamental fairness” with his procedural rulings. Goodell, speaking to reporters Wednesday in Chicago on the eve of the NFL draft, said the league would like to move forward. “I think the most important thing from the ruling is that the judgment that the district court made last summer was incorrect. They obviously reversed that,” Goodell said. “They reinforced our authority here, and they reinforced the fact that we have the facts correct, that it was a fair process and that we came to the conclusion that they supported. From our standpoint, we think that’s the right decision and frankly should have been the decision last time.” Goodell also told Fox Sports’ “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on Wednesday that he is unlikely to reduce Brady’s suspension, even if requested to do so by owners. “I listen to everybody, but we’ve had these discussions,” Goodell said. “This was an issue just about a year ago. When we make these decisions, it’s with a tremendous amount of thought, a tremendous amount of consideration. Our staff worked very
up from the standpoint of letting my teammates down. I hate that,” DeRozan said. “But when it comes to anything with me personally, I really don’t beat myself up.” DeRozan got going early Tuesday but really found another gear with Paul George on the bench getting a rest to start the second quarter. He was playing with confidence, draining his midrange shot, taking advantage of solid screens and driving to the basket. With 4:15 left, DeRozan drained a 3 to give Toronto its first lead of the game, a lead it would not relinquish. DeRozan shot 4-for-8 and scored nine points with George as his primary defender in Game 5, according to ESPN Stats & Information. In the first four games, George held DeRozan to 24 points combined on 25 percent shooting. “It’s not surprising,” DeRozan said. “I think just with me being older, maturing and going through a lot basketball-wise, I never got frustrated. It’s easy to complain or make excuses when
hard on it, and I think that we have given that full consideration. “We’re careful -- and this is where the commissioner’s authority is important -- we don’t allow individual clubs to influence an outcome with respect to discipline because it can affect other clubs. The rules of the league, obviously, the competitiveness of the league, that’s handed to the commissioner by the 32 clubs for exactly that reason -- to avoid any club getting a competitive advantage.” Goodell also said he doesn’t view this week’s ruling as a win. “No, we don’t look at it that way at all,” he said. “What it is, is reinforcing the commissioner’s authority and the league’s authority that we negotiated in our collective bargaining agreement. It also reinforced the underlying facts of the case, the process we engaged in, the fact we had a fair process, we looked at the facts fairly, including the destruction of evidence, and came to a reasonable conclusion. The courts of appeals made it clear that the district court got it wrong last summer, which we felt from the moment that decision
things are not going your way the previous games, but I know how hard I work, how much I put into the game, and I’m not who I am for no reason. I knew it was going to come. It’s all about being patient and when my team needed it most, I came through.” The Raptors have a chance to close it out on Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The hope is that DeRozan, an impending free agent who could command a max contract over the summer, can put together back-to-back solid games. “It’s not about Xs and Os,” DeRozan said. “It’s about the mentality that once we leave tomorrow and head to Indiana that we have to fight like hell to make sure we’re not going back home to play (Game 7). I told all the guys that we really have to treat it like it’s our last game. If we go in there understanding, having that feeling and emotion like it’s our last game, we should be fine.” Source: ESPN
came down. That is why we appealed it.” On Tuesday, NFLPA executive George Atallah told ESPN Radio’s Russillo & Kanell that the union is still reviewing the court’s decision and weighing appeals options, including an appeal to the full federal appeals court panel or to the Supreme Court. The NFLPA has two weeks to make a decision on an appeal. “We’re not going to sit here and hypothetically talk about what we’re going to do,” Goodell told reporters. “We had a lot of discussions last year. But the determination by the appellate court was very clear and very strong. We will continue, obviously, to negotiate with the union on the commissioner discipline issue. We’ve done that in the past. We’ve made changes in the past, and we’re still open to doing that.” Source: ESPN
