lhamdulillah, the month of mandatory fasting is coming to an end: The noble Qur’an has clearly expressed the act Q oof “Fasting” as a blessing and not a calamity: “Allah desires ease for yyou, not your discomfort. He desires yyou to fast the entire month, and that yyou may magnify Him for giving yyou His guidance, and that you may ggive thanks.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185). Taqwa: Eid ul Fitr t is one of the T bbest rewards for Muslims. Having aattained the wealth of Taqwa and sspiritual correctness during the ddaily dawn to dusk “fasting work oout,” the Muslim-worshippers are ssuccessful in becoming self discipplined. The positive change makes tthem feel at peace; immediately nnext thing for them happens to be tthe most exciting festivity. IIn other words, upon successful ccompletion of the month of Ramaddan, the Eid day is a ‘Thanksgiviing Day’ for having gone through a tough exercise towards “self-purrification.” Charity: Among other essential eleC ments is paying Zakat (wealth tax) m aand Fitra to minimize the harsh imppact of any prevailing misfortune, hhunger or widespread poverty. Therefore, when it comes to this reT lligious obligation, the Muslims are dduty bound to help out the needy ppeople before the Eid Prayer. The Muslims are required to pay Zakat M bbased on their wealth and financcial ability. It consists of spending 22.5% of one’s wealth for the beneefit of the needy people. The good tthing is paying Zakat is considered

Gift of Eid ul Fitr
to be the personal responsibility of all Muslims to eliminate inequality and ease economic hardship of others for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa taalaa. Charity in the form of fitra (fitrana) is obligatory at the end of the Fasting month before the Eid prayer. This again means the real happiness of “EID” lies in sharing our happiness with “the have nots.”, On this happy occasion, good Muslims remember those who are afflicted with poverty, ignorance, disease, or otherwise are less fortunate. Beauty is Muslims on this very day are encouraged to erase their grudges or differences with others. Eid day schedule: After offering the regular Salat ul Fajr (the presunrise prayer), the Muslims will be heading out shortly after the Sun-rise to perform the obligatory prayer in congregation (slaat ul Eid) in open areas, community centres and mosques. Eid prayer is followed by special Khutba (Sermon) and supplication asking for God’s forgiveness, mercy, peace and blessings for all people across the world. The Imams would be delivering khutba explaining to the Muslims about performing rituals of Eid, such as the compulsory Zakat or Sadaqat ul Fitr. As usual, The Muslims will be encouraged to stay away from worldly desires; they will be advised to focus entirely on pleasing and thanking Allah for His merciful blessings.
Right after the Khutba is over, over Muslims will be hugging each other wishing Eid Mubarak. Then they will be visiting their relatives and friends. Eid gifts (known as Eidie) are given on this precious occasion to children and to immediate relatives. Children will receive gifts in cash or kind; sweets and tasty dishes would be served throughout the day. Altogether, the caring Muslims will be generously donating money; they are likely to be contributing to their local food banks for the less fortunate. Beyond doubt, Eid is an opportunity for Muslims of different ethnic or cultural backgrounds to share together for prayers and celebrations. A large number of Canadian Muslims will take time off from work to join prayers to be held in big-city mosques or Islamic centres, convention centres or sport grounds. In the larger cities of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa, congregational prayers shall be offered at multiple times to accommodate the large number of worshipers. In many Canadian communities, Muslim organizations and mosques will also hold large Eid parties that are open to the entire Muslim community. Smaller Muslim communities, particularly in the rural areas, hold other communal gatherings. Some groups do reserve other activity centres for the full day of fun and celebration, while others would hold public Eid parties in mosques as a means of OUTREACH to the
non-Muslim society. Positive Difference: It’s commonly seen that holiday for the nonMuslims is a chance to indulge in worldly pleasures, or involve oneself sinfully or immorally and unlawfully, yet for Muslims, there is zero tolerance in the eyes of Allah subhanahu wa talaa for committing forbidden acts. This is certainly a good contribution to maintain a morality enriched nation. Let’s be warned that ‘EID’ doesn’t give an automatic ticket to take a vacation from Islamic responsibilities, and no wasting of “time or money” is permitted either, simply because our obedience and submission to the “Will of Allah” cannot be compromised under any circumstance. We have learnt that ‘EID’ is a chance to multiply good deeds by bringing pleasure to the hearts of other Muslims as well as by devoting for the sake of Allah SWT. Most importantly, it’s the spirit of thanksgiving that make the Muslim Umma stronger all over the globe for the accomplishment of an act of dedication and submission to the total will of Allah, the Almighty. The most beautiful fact is festival of Eid ul Fitr is aimed at promoting peace, strengthening the feeling of brotherhood and enabling the Muslims to move on with their lives normally as a refined Umma in the eyes of our Creator. Hence, the Eid and its celebration in Islam carry a distinctive meaning and spirit as they are totally different from the celebrations in non Muslim communities.

ISCC and MAT Strongly Condemn Terrorists Attacks in Turkey and Bangladesh .By: Imam Syed Soharwardy ISCC, Alberta (Calgary) Muslim Against Terrorism (MAT), world’s first anti-terrorism NGO and the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC), a national Canadian Muslim organization strongly condemn the barbaric terrorist attacks in Istanbul and Dhaka. Those who were involved in these attacks were murderers and must be brought to justice. Regardless of these murderers’ claim that they are Muslims and they want to impose Islam in countries overwhelming majority of Muslims does not believe they are Muslims. These terrorists are (ab)using Islam to carry out their own agenda which is to control the people and the resources. These are thugs and criminals in the sight of Allah, in the eyes of Islam and in the eyes of the laws of all countries. So far, Bangladesh was immune to these terrorist attacks but yesterday’s attacks in Dhaka proved that these criminals are growing and spreading. If we will not stop this menace it will effect every one on the planet. It is every individual Muslim and nonMuslim’s obligation to expose such elements in the society and bring them to justice. “It is unimaginable
Miracle newspaper that was to be published on Friday, July 8, 2016, is being published on Tuesday, July 6, 2016. Our next issue will be printed on its regular date of Friday, July 22, 2016, In sha Allah. for a Muslim to commit or support such heinous crimes especially in the holy month of Ramadan”, said Imam ISCC and MAT urges people of all faiths and no faith to unite against these terrorists and extremists. The tactics of these terrorists to spare lives of those who were able to read Qur’an and kill those who were not able read Qur’an is in fact a very dangerous and deceiving tactics. They just want to create a conflict among people of faiths. They want us to finger point and develop hate for each other. We, the Muslims, Christians, Jewish, Hindus, Sikhs, atheists, agnostics and followers of all other faiths are completely united against violence, hate, racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Christian and anti-Semitism. We will not let these terrorists succeed. ISCC and MAT offer deep condolences to the victims and their families of Istanbul and Dhaka attacks. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in Turkey and Bangladesh. We are all very sad and disturbed by these massacres of innocent people. Yesterday, in Friday prayers ISCC and MAT arranged memorial services (FATEHA) for the Muslim victims of these terrorist attacks and two minutes of silence for all victims of these attacks.
‘Tragic Terror in Turkey’. By: Gulshan Aalani The question is for how long such trials and tribulations in an era of anti-Christ will continue according to the Prophecies? What triggers such violent acts? Is it their unethical lifestyle, or consuming the haraam food that is forbidden by the Creator GOD, or drugs?Or simply the evil uncontrollable anger of some? Universal Messenger (SAWS) advised to control anger, especially while one is fasting should say ‘Peace’ to the aggressors, but such fake Muslims have no idea about Islam or the Prophet’s teaching. However, such Daesh (ISIS) or lawless Gog and Magog wild and lawless tribes breaking through barriers of Divine orders one of the prognostications of approaching Judgement; cannot be considered ‘Muslim’ who do not practice Islam, or respect the month of Ramadaan, or follow Sharia-Divine Law that has strict rules of wars, retaliation, and 5 major commands. Anyone who doesn’t believe in Islam’s ethics, and moral values or the practices of Ramadaan cannot be ‘Muslim’. Such may carry Muslim names, using the fake ID one of the major sins, but their actions reveals their true ID, proving they are anti-Islam trying to destroy Islam by giving it a bad name by evil acts. Similarly, there are many hidden secret enemies of Islam doing the same job of Daesh without an open fight, most hateful of Islam and the Quran, yet using the fake ID of ‘Muslim’, like the Wolf in the coat of Sheep’. Evidently, such hypocrites hidden enemies are more dangerous than Donald Trump, who at least speaks openly
his anti-Muslim opinions. As Allah says: “Beware of the hypocrites the hidden enemies who are more dangerous than the open enemies”, Consequently, we need to remove this misconception of ‘Islamist’ and reject such fake Muslims, who aren’t fighting for Islam but against Islam. Orlando shooter Omar Mateen carried a Muslim name but in reality he wasn’t, not even a righteous person. He was a homo and got angry for not finding a male partner after so much effort and his anger was ignited out of jealousy when he saw two men kissing each other, but the Media was too quick to pass the judgement based on his Muslim name that he was Islamist terrorist, inclining that all the non-Muslims are non-violent and not murderers or crusaders. Most perplexing is that such attend the Masjids concealing their filthy belief after denying their Creator-GOD and HIS Law. Thus, let us remove the hatred of Islam, Allah and the human-beings, whether straight or LGBT, whom we can only correct but not supposed to kill, and not to take the law in our own hands as the Creator-GOD is the only one to declare war on any kind of criminal activities, which is evident in the past pre-Islamic period of destroying the city and people of Prophet Lot (AS) and the people of Prophet Noah (AS) for their iniquity and disobedience of HIS way of life. I know since years the activist Ismaili Imtiaz Popat and Farouq Khaki part of the LGBT- ‘Salaam’ Ismaili queer community, most hated by their own community, but we need to be tolerance.

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif broke his fast with internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Bannu, military’s spokesperson
ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Monday advised Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan to ask Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari about Surrey palace scandal before “bringing him on container against corruption”. Speaking to media after inaugurating a National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) centre in the capital’s Blue Area, the minister said Imran Khan claims he is launching a movement against corruption and wants Bilawal and himself on the same container. “But I request him to ask Bilawal about Surrey palace, diamond necklace and Swiss accounts before bringing him on container”. “If Asif Zardari and Bilawal Zardari declare their assets, the whole issue will resolve. Asif Zardari and Bilawal are the only two politicians who have not declared their assets, except Altaf Hussain for Hussain is a British citizen,” claimed Nisar. He added that Asif Zardari remained president for five years but did not declare his assets and if he cannot do so, he should explain about the three palaces he owns in Dubai. “I would have appreciated if Bilawal would have asked his father about his assets in the same way he asks Nawaz
Lieutenant General Asim Bajwa said on Monday. Bajwa said the army chief spent the day with the displaced persons and interacted with them on issues related to their return and resettlement. Earlier, General Raheel visited Miramshah in North Waziristan where he was briefed by military commanders on the return, resettlement and development work taken up in order to make the dignified return of IDPs possible. With the completion of the final phase of the operation Zarb-i-Azb in Shawal, the army has shifted its focus to the repatriation of internally displaced persons. On May 20, an army officer told a media briefing that eighty per cent of the displaced population will be back in their homes in North and South Waziristan by September. Pakistan’s troubled Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) have been severely affected by unrest and military operations over the past decade. Last year, the number of families displaced by fighting from different tribal areas was estimated at 260,000. Source: Dawn News

The interior minister maintained that a drive against corruption cannot be termed genuine if people “who set worst records of corruption in the country chant corruption corruption on a container”. It is pertinent to mention here that both Bilawal BhuttoZardari and Imran Khan have announced plans to launch anti-government campaigns after Eid. However, it is not clear if the two parties will launch a joint campaign or separate ones.

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office (FO) on Monday strongly rejected Indian media reports alleging Pakistan’s involvement in the recent Dhaka attack in which 20 foreigners were killed. In a statement, FO Spokesman Nafees Zakaria termed the allegations baseless and the reporting of such stories in Indian media “highly regrettable”. A section of India media had reported that Bangladesh In-
Basharat Shah
formation Minister Hasanul Haq and Adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister Gowher Rizvi blamed Pakistan and its intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for the attacks. “These stories are utterly baseless and unfounded. Pakistan strongly rejects such allegations,” the FO spokesman added.Zakaria said Pakistan deeply appreciates Gowher Rizvi’s timely rebuttal to Indian media’s reports. Rizvi contacted Pakistan’s high commissioner to Bangladesh and confirmed that the Bangladeshi government did not issue any such statement regarding Pakistan and that Indian media reports in this regard are false. He also advised Pakistan’s high commissioner to convey this clarification to the government of Pakistan in order to avoid any misunderstanding between the two countries. Pakistan has strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Dhaka and expressed solidarity with the government and the people of Bangladesh, and offered condolences to the families of the victims. The FO said that Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. “Being a victim of terrorism itself, Pakistan welcomes Prof. Gowher Rizvi’s call for international cooperation to fight the menace of terrorism.”

DHAKA: Well-educated and hailing from wealthy families, the gunmen who killed 20 hostages in a Bangladesh cafe defy the increasingly outdated stereotype of militants from poor backgrounds who have been radicalised in madrassas. Six young men were shot dead Saturday at the end of the all-night siege in a Dhaka cafe claimed by the militant Islamic State (IS) group. One may have been an innocent bystander, but among the remaining five are a graduate of Bangladesh’s leading private university, an 18-year-old student at an elite school and the son of a ruling party official. As militant groups such as IS focus their recruitment efforts on disenfranchised middle class youth, government efforts to eradicate extremism become ever more complicated. “They are all highly educated young men and from well-off families,” Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told AFP. Asked why they would have become militants, Khan said: “It has become a fashion.” While the Bangladesh government has continued to deny IS has a foothold in the country, the group claimed the attack and its asso-

ciated news agency, Amaq, posted pictures of the five gunmen posing with weapons. Similarly in militancy-ravaged Pakistan, the government denies that the international militant network has a formal presence in the country. But a Pakistani security official recently told AFP that authorities habusted several IS recruitment cells focused on a similar affluent demographic. Taj Hashmi, a Bangladeshi who teaches security studies at the Austin Peay State University in the United States, pointed out that many of the Saudi hijackers behind the September 11 attacks were also from wealthy families. But he says that middle-class youth have been providing Islamist terror groups with footsoldiers since long before the emergence of IS.

Anger grows as Baghdad residents accuse Iraqi government of failing to protect them after ISIL attack kills over 200. Anger is growing in Baghdad over the government’s failure to protect civilians, after a devastating bombing in a crowded commercial area in the Iraqi capital killed more than 200 people, including many children. The powerful explosion early on Sunday came near the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, when the streets were filled with young people and families out after sunset. The death toll from the blast in Karada, a predominantly Shia neighbourhood in central Baghdad, rose to over 200 on Monday morning, as the bodies of more victims were pulled from the rubble. Hundreds were wounded when a lorry packed with explosives blew up in a busy shopping street filled with people after they had broken their fast. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement circulated by its supporters online. The group, which has claimed numerous deadly bombings in mainly Shia areas of Baghdad, alleged that a suicide bomber targeted a crowd of Shia Muslims.
Many of the victims were women and children who were inside a multi-storey shopping and amusement mall. Dozens burned to death or suffocated, a police officer said. There were fears the death toll could rise even further.Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi condemned the bombing and declared three days of mourning across the country after visiting the scene of the attack. Video footage posted online showed people jeering and throwing objects at his convoy. Later on Sunday, protesters marched from Karada to Abadi’s house. Many Iraqis blame their political leadership for lapses in security in Baghdad that have allowed large amounts of explosives to make their way past multiple checkpoints and into neighbourhoods packed with civilians. “All the politicians in Iraq are responsible for these blasts, including Abadi,” a woman in Karada told local media. “We can’t enjoy the Eid; if it isn’t ISIL, it’s al-Qaeda, and if it isn’t the two, it’s the filthy corrupt politics in this country. “We are being targeted while they are sitting safe and sound in their palaces. They are the ones who are allowing ISIL to come here and murder people.”
The deadly bombing in Istanbul’s major international airport today is the latest in a string of attacks in Turkey that underscore the immense security challenge facing the nation on the frontline in the fight in Syria and Iraq. At least 36 people were killed in the attack at the Ataturk airport around 10 p.m. local time. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that all signs point to the Syria-based terror group ISIS. The majority Muslim nation shares long, porous borders with Syria and Iraq, which means it is both a transit hub for extremists looking to join the fight there and a tempting target for those looking to take advantage of the regional instability. At the same time, the Turkish government has to contend with active domestic terror groups, like the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), that have launched their own series of bloody attacks in recent months. “They are essentially confronting a three-front war,” Steven Cook, Senior Fellow for Middle East and Africa Studies at the Council of Foreign Relations, said, referring to ISIS, the PKK and a Kurdish splinter group called the TAK. ISIS, which launched a similar airport attack in Brussels in March, has repeatedly called for attacks in Turkey as retaliation for Turkey’s involvement in U.S.-led anti-ISIS operations in Iraq and Syria. Turkey was criticized -- publicly by Vice President Joe Biden in one case -- early in the ISIS fight for not enforcing their borders strictly enough and allowing foreign fighters to stream through Turkey to fill the ranks of ISIS and other extremist groups. Turkey has more recently worked to stem the flow and ISIS has turned more attention on them, especially after Turkey agreed to let the U.S. and its allies use Turkish air bases for airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq and Syria last summer, Cook said.ISIS was suspected in a number of attacks in Turkey in 2015, including a blast in October that killed nearly 100 people. In January of this year an attacker purportedly linked to ISIS detonated a bomb in a busy section of Istanbul, killing 11. Then in March Turkish officials said ISIS was linked to a similar attack in the same city that left four dead, including two Americans. A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, Ned Price, released a statement at the time that revealed the Obama administration’s frustration at the unending carnage.“Turkey has once again suffered a hor-
rific terrorist attack, and we remain steadfast in our support for our NATO ally and partner,” Price said. “These repeated acts of terrorism in Turkey must come to an end. We are in close touch with Turkish authorities and reaffirm our commitment to work together with Turkey to confront the evil of terrorism.”But it’s not just external threats that Turkish security forces are focused on. Just today Turkish officials reportedly blamed another car bombing in southern Turkey on the Kurdish group PKK. Turkey and the U.S. recognize the PKK as a terrorist organization and it has been at the front of a violent separatist movement in Turkey for decades. The other Kurdish extremist group, TAK, which experts said was closely linked to the PKK, claimed responsibility for a car bombing in Ankara in March that killed 37 people. The group reportedly said the attack was in retaliation for continuing security operations by Turkish authorities in the southeastern part of the country.Gonul Tol, the founding director of the Middle East Institute’s Center for Turkish Studies, said that the Turkish government and PKK had made strides towards peace in recent years, but talks fell apart last summer and violence quickly followed. Turkish media has reported deadly attacks allegedly carried out by the PKK on one side and deadly raids and airstrikes on PKK targets by Turkish authorities on the other ever since. Today the White House condemned “in the strongest possible terms today’s heinous terrorist attack” and said it remains “steadfast in our support for Turkey… as we continue to confront the threat of terrorism.” But Tol said she wasn’t surprised when she heard about the bombing today, and Cook said that after such a violent string of attacks, he doesn’t see anything changing in the near future for Turkey. “I think this is a reality now,” he said.

Thoughts on Eid Al-Fitr
By: A K M Mohiuddin t’s Eid Day at the end of the month-long fasting and my heart is sore. I think of the Muslims all over the world and I find little comfort. I think of the Shia-Sunni divide profusely bleeding the ummah every moment. I shudder at the thought that some groups on both sides in Pakistan or elsewhere might not hesitate to shed each others’ blood even on this day of joy and festivity. I think of those rulers in the heartland of Islam, Arabia, who would rather cooperate with Israel than endure the thought of the Muslims surviving and thriving. I cannot forget how this ShiaSunni divide has been exploited by Islam’s common enemies for centuries and has facilitated their conquest and domination of the Muslims, and continues to do so today. On this Eid Day I sit down alone and lament the blindness and the perversion of our hearts that this Shia-Sunni divide has caused. I think of the plight of the Muslim lands Palestine, Kashmir, Chechnya, Mindanao, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia and Yemen, ravaged by internal strife and humiliated by foreign occupation and domination, the killing fields that these places have become. Killing in the Muslim lands has become an easy sport. I think of the fear, insecurity, misery, humiliation and helplessness of so many of my brothers and sisters, too many to count. I think of the long dark night in their lives with no sign of an approaching morning. I think of the beleaguered Muslim masses around the world. The Muslim societies in Muslim lands are no longer a unified whole; they are torn up into conflicting segments in which the masses always lose. The ruling elite in these lands have a tenuous connection with Islam and stand as a class apart only to serve themselves. Their insensitivity
I
and heartlessness to those they rule over is mind-numbing. Likewise, Muslims living outside the Muslim world have a precarious existence and are under constant threat. At every step they need to prove themselves as sufficiently human, sufficiently American or European or whatever; they are regarded with suspicion, ridicule and even outright hostility. I think of my brothers and sisters in so many places of the world in staggering poverty and suffering one natural calamity after another. I see my millions of flood-affected brothers and sisters in Pakistan, mostly poor, pitifully neglected by successive governments and by the rich and powerful in their communities who exploit them but refuse to stand by them in their distress. Where are Muslims who are humble in power and generous in wealth, as Islam teaches? I think of the waste and ostentation that go on all year round, culminating in Ramadan and on the Eid Day, even when neighbours are suffering unspeakably. I think of the breed of politicians in the Muslim lands who ferociously compete with each other to lead the Muslims. Barring a few exceptions here and there, they range from insane to clownish. They display their talent best in groveling at the feet of their foreign masters while creating division and strife at home. They beg without shame from their foreign masters only to fatten themselves and their cronies. They utterly lack any sense of self-respect and are incapable of behaving in a dignified manner. In their own base interest they mortgage the fate of the millions of their fellow Muslims. They lead only to destroy. I think of the way Muslim rulers in the oil rich states squander their wealth in useless and wasteful projects. I grieve at the inhuman treatment millions of desperate expatriate Muslim workers re-
ceive at the hands of m many Muslim governments. I think of the government offices that will open soon after the Eid vacation. I will not speak of the incompetence and corruption in these places. I only shudder to think of the indignity and humiliation an ordinary Muslim is meted out by the people sitting in chairs in these places. An encounter with them is enough to take away one’s joy of living. I miss the loss of community, its integrity and cohesion that Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) and His noble Messenger (Sallallahu alayhi wassallam) repeatedly enjoin on Muslims. Muslims oppress other Muslims without hesitation, inflict pain on each other, make each other’s burdens heavier with no feeling of shame or remorse. Muslims go hungry in the midst of plenty and waste, get sick without succor, cry bitterly and in vain for redress and justice. I find Muslims today living side by side without even being aware of each others’ existence. We pray together in the masjid, but have no real communion with one another. I think of the Muslim people split up and caged into national entities, even so much so that at Hajj they are deprived of any opportunity to come close to each other because they are consigned to enclaves by nationality. I smell the air in which the concept of the ummah has been given a foul odor and has become dangerous to breathe in. It has become a crime to think of oneself as an integral part of a unified body of Muslims, universal and timeless. I miss the ulema who are supposed to be the heirs of our noble Prophet Muhammad (saws) in all the aspects of his life and life’s work. I long to see a body of the ulema who
understand Islam, live by it, understand their own people and their tradition and know the contemporary world for what it is. I long to see them breaking out of their isolation in their own regional confines and forming a close bond with the ulema in all parts of the Muslim world, sit together and discuss issues and concerns that need to be addressed untidily and firmly. I long to see them, and them alone, lead the Muslims. Muslim masses are hungry for leadership that does not come. There are many individuals and groups active in Islamic work, but there are not many who present Islam in its entirety, faithfully and truly. It is as if we are engaged in creating an Islam of our own inclinations, as if we are not comfortable with Islam as it is. I remember what Allah (SWT) has called the Muslims, the best ummah raised for mankind (Quran 3:110). Can we make any claim to being the best of anything? This Eid Day will pass and another day will begin, and thus another week, month and year. On this auspicious day we need to examine ourselves and ask what groundwork we have done for that noble role during the month of Ramadan that we have just bidden farewell to. ***** A. K. M. Volume 2, Book 25, Number 579: Narrated Ibn Umar: Allah’s Apostle enjoined the payment of one Sa’ of dates or one Sa’ of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the ‘Id prayer. (One Sa’ = 3 Kilograms approx.) .
End of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr
T
h en he end nd of Ramadan is marked by all Muslims going to Morning Prayer services and then the Islamic Holiday Eid Al-Fitr begins. The Night Preceding Eid Al-Fitr The night before Eid al-Fitr is regarded as a very blessed night and Muslims believe that it should be spent in nafl (voluntary) salat (prayers) and worship. There will be no taraweeh prayers on this last night of Ramadan, but a devout Muslim will spend the night in prayer, remembrance of Allah and reading the Quran. Before the Eid al-Fitr salat, Mulsims will be sure to pay the “Sadakah Al-Fitr.” This is money due to the poor and the needy. Every Muslim must pay this, even the poor. Sadakah al-Fitr is a fairly small amount of money equal to 1.75 kilograms of wheat for every person in the family. On this topic, Ibn ‘Umar said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, made zakat al-Fitr obligatory for the Muslims - slave and free, male and female, young and old, being a sa’ of dates or a sa’ of barley. He commanded that it be paid before people went out to the prayer.” (Muwatta, Book 17, 52) Preparing to go to Eid Al Fitr Salat The morning of Eid al-Fitr, it is considered sunnah (consistent with the ways of the prophet) to perform certain acts in preparation of thanking Allah for a blessed Ramadan. These acts include: •Wake up early in the morning and take a bath. •Brush the teeth with a Miswak or a toothbrush. •Wear the best available clothes. •Wear perfume (men only.) •Eat a few dates before the Eid prayer. •Recite the following Takbir in the low
voice while going to the ‘Eid prayer: “Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La Ilaha Ila Allah Wa Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wa Lillahi Alhamd.” Eid Al-Fitr Salat (Prayers) In Islam, the Eid prayers should be performed in an open field or area if possible. It is not recommended to conduct Eid prayers in every single mosque. It is said to be a time for Muslims to celebrate Eid together in large gatherings. If a large field or park is not available, then a large mosque will suffice. The Eid prayer is mandatory for every male Muslim. Muslim women must attend Eid prayers if there are no emergency situations in the home, such as issues involving small children or sick and elderly parents that require assistance or tending. The Eid prayer should be attended and prior to the prayer takbir should be recited:”Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La Ilaha Ila Allah Wa Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wa Lillahi Alhamd.” When not reciting the takbir (above), saying zikr (remembrance of Allah) is recommended. No nafl salat (voluntary prayers) are recited in the home prior to or after the salat; Muslims may recite nafl salat in the home after returning from the Eid prayers. The Eid prayer is distinct from other Muslim prayers. The Imam will lead the salat (prayers) and there will be six sets of takbirs (Allah Akbar). Three of the takbirs will

be in the beginning of the salat. After each takbir, the hands are raised to the ears. At the beginning of the second rakat, after the Imam or sheik recites the Fatiha and something from the Quran, an additional three takbirs are recited. Some mosques will do all six takbirs at once at the beginning of the salat and then proceed with the prayer. The Eid Prayer Khutbah (Sermon) The Khutbah itself is regarded as an inspirational event and it involves praising Allah. Muslims should listen intensely and reverently to what the Imam has to say. It is regarded as a time to remember Allah’s blessings and to be thankful to be present in such an assembly. Muslims should not leave the Eid prayer early hoping to avoid the crowds; they should stay until after the final dua is said; then, it’s customary to greet everyone in the room with a congratulations or “Ramadan Mubarak.” Eid Al-Fitr Celebrations Begin at the End of Ramadan Islamic holidays and celebrations are unlike Christian or Jew celebrations. In a non-Islamic situation, there may be partying, dancing, music and singing – this is not so in a Muslim community. Muslims will visit friends and relatives, drink Arabic coffee, chat, hug each other, and then praise Allah for His bounty at the end of Ramadan. It is normal for Muslim families to make the rounds, visiting each home for a brief period of time. It is considered in-
efu A appropriate to refuse Arabic coffee when offered. Wishing a blessed Eid Ul Fitr to the whole Islamic Ummah. Congratulating One Another People may exchange congratulations and good greetings on Eid, no matter what form the words take. For example they may say to one another, “Taqabbal Allaahu minnaa wa minkum (May Allaah accept [the fast and worship] from us and from you” or “Eid mubarak’ ‘ and other similar permissible greetings. Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: “At the time of the Prophet (££), when people met one another on the day of Eid , they would say, ‘Taqabbal Allaahu minnaa wa minka (May Allaah accept from us and from you).’ “ (Ibn Hajar. Its isnaad is hasan. Fath, 2/446) The practice of exchanging greetings was well-known at the time of the Sahaabah and scholars such as Imaam Ahmad and others allowed it. There are reports which indicate that it is permissible to congratulate people on special occasions. The Sahaabah used to congratulate one another when something good happened, such as when Allaah accepted a person’s repentance and so on. There is no doubt that congratulating others in this way is one of the noblest kinds of good manners and one of the highest social qualities among Muslims. At the very least, one can return Eid greetings when they are given to you, and remain silent if nothing is said, as Imaam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “If someone congratulates me, I return the greeting, but I do not initiate it.’ ‘

On Eidal-Adha, eat breakfast after Salaat or after sacrifice if you are doing a sacrifice. 8.Pay Zakaat-al-Fitr before Salaat-alEid (on Eid-al-Fitr). 9.Go to prayer ground early.
10.Offer Salaat-al-Eid in congregation in an open place except when whether is not permitting like rain, snow, etc. 11.Use two separate route to and from the prayer ground. 12.Recite the following Takbir on the way to Salaat and until the beginning of Salaat-al-Eid. On Eid-al-Adha, Takbir starts from Mughrib on the 9th Zdilhijjah and last until the Asr on the 12th Zdilhijjah: Allaho-Akber, Allaho-Akber. La ila-ha ill-lal-lah. Allaho-Akber, Allaho-Akber. Walilahill hamd. (Allah is greater, Allah is greater. There is no god but Allah. Allah is greater, Allah is greater. And all praises are for Allah).
Essence of Eid n of Eid ul-Fitr culminates a The celebration month of fasting wherein the faithful have spent their time praying and beseeching God for forgiveness and mercy. For many, Ramadan was not just an abstention from food and drink. Rather, it was an exercise in patience and discipline. Eid is the celebration for those who fasted and obeyed God’s rules and teachings. It is for those who spent the month of Ramadan in complete devotion to Allah. Eid is a time when the entire Muslim community comes together to share in each others joy and blessings and also to lessen the burden of those who may be suffering. It is preceded by people shopping and looking around for gifts for their near and dear ones. It is a time when the bright lights from homes and shops illuminates our life. We use see this day and the following days to spread happiness and social harmony by visiting our friends and relatives. Gifts are exchanged during Eid by young and old alike. We also visit the elderly and the sick. Eid is a time where all kinds or festivities pre-
vail vail. Many of us gormandize to make up for “lost food” during the month of Ramadan. However, with all the going around we some time forget our lesser privileged brethren. We forget that there are many out there who have nothing to celebrate. There are those among our brothers and sisters for whom Eid day is just another ordinary day. There are those who open their cupboards on Eid day and find them bare. There are those who in hospitals who will go through a bleak and lonely day with no one visiting them. Friendless, deprived of company, they will have no one to offer solace or comfort. Let us therefore see to it that our deprived brethren welcome the day of Eid with warmth and hope. As we buy gifts and clothes for our children, let us earmark a special sum for those who cannot afford to buy. Also we should instill in our children a sense of compassion so that when they buy something they will also think of their unfortunate brethren. Let us teach them the art of giving. We should let them know that there are millions of children in;
war torn areas of Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Syria, Kashmir and Chechnya, the poor and downtrodden areas of Africa, Asia and South America, and even in the forgotten ghettos of Europe and North America who do not have the basic necessities to make this day a different day. We cannot divest ourselves from the misery of others. We cannot shrug it off saying that it does not concern us. To do this would be an injustice to humanity. The Quran (5:8) tells us ... Be just: that is next to piety. Many of us donate money to charity and fulfill our religious duty. However, if we actually meet the recipients of our charity the

perception of charity changes. There is a feeling of belonging when the recipient and giver meet. Islamic ideology teaches us to be kind and compassionate. Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that “I and the provider of the orphan will be together.” And what greater prize is there for anyone of us than to be around our beloved prophet. All we need for that is compassion, sincerity and a feeling of brotherhood and understanding. And that will decide the quality of our life on earth and the hereafter. EID-AL-FITR message from President of The B.C. Muslim Association Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful All praise belongs to Allah, the Creator of heavens and earth and the Lord of the universe. Dear respected brothers, sisters, elders and children Assalamu’Alaykum wa Rahamatullahi wa Barakatuhu On behalf of the Executive Council, Executive Board, various divisions and staff of the BC Muslim Association it is my pleasure to extend a very warm and joyous EID MUBARAK to you and your families Alhamdulillah, we are in the last days of this blessed month of Ramadan. We were blessed to welcome the arrival of Ramadan with zeal, excitement, overwhelming joy and gratitude that Allah (swt) granted us another opportunity to embrace and experience Ramadan in our lifetime. Now, we are at a point to bid farewell to this sacred month with mixed feelings. As we conclude Ramadan, and on the threshold of celebrating Eid Al-Fitr, we cannot thank Allah swt enough for His favors, blessings and mercy for affording us the life, faith and health to earn extra rewards. For this and all of Allah’s favors, we give thanks. Ramadan completely sets us in a different state of mind; totally different atmosphere
that is full of god-consciousness, devotion, generosity and tolerance. We cherish every moment dearly for full month and share its blessings with families, friends and neighbors. Ramadan allows us to remember and reflect upon Allah’s place in our lives. We put extra effort and push ourselves to enhance our spiritual qualities in the hopes of earning Allah’s pleasure. It is our personal training exercise geared towards making us a better Muslim, a better community and a better vicegerent on earth. We sincerely ask Him to reward our efforts, accept our fasting and prayers…Ameen! I hope and pray that you and your families had a wonderful Ramadan. I pray that you are energized and fully recharged spiritually and physically until next Ramadan. May Allah (swt) bring a feeling of satisfaction, achievement and success in your life. May He bring us all closer to Islam and enable us to fulfill our responsibilities and make us live our lives within the framework of Islam as demonstrated by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his cherished Companions..… Ameen! Muslims are passing thru difficult times locally, nationally and internationally. There is so much pessimism about Islam and senseless killings that our enemies take full advan-
tage to portray negative image of Muslims and Islam as a religion. Unfortunately, this labeling is only reserved for Muslim/Islam by bias media and irresponsible forces that have own personal agendas. Certainly, there is nothing wrong with Islam and these pessimists need to demonstrate common decency and respect for other faith and not hurt their feelings. Every society has individuals that are misguided. These oddballs also commit heinous crime against humanity but their deeds do not reflect on whatever faith they follow but only Islam and Muslims are highlighted. WHY? Such standards are unconditionally unacceptable and we call for fairness and responsibility. Islam teaches high moral ideals that are the cornerstone of Islamic faith that millions have sacrificed their life defending it over centuries. Why would any true believer, a true Muslim act in contradiction of the basic tenets of Islam. It’s unimaginable! Some Muslims need to do actual soul searching and not only ask but answer some fundamental questions before facing his creator on the Day of Judgment. What is our purpose in life? Why are we here? Are we living Islam as prescribed in the Holy Qur’an? Do we really understand all the intricate and minute details about Islam and how it is to be practiced? Let’s welcome Eid Al-Fitr with a renewed
spirit of Taqwa in our hearts, find the right answers and bring change in our lives in line with basic principles of Islam. Finally, brothers and sisters please do not forget the underprivileged, the sick, new Muslims and those displaced by acts of war – our new Syrian and Iraqi brothers and sisters. I appeal to the community to please welcome them, invite them to your houses and take care of them. These are the Mujahareens of our time and our responsibility is to look after their welfare. We are blessed by Allah (swt) for being safe and comfortable but our brothers and sisters in Palestine and other parts of the world are under constant attack and agony. Let’s remember them and pray for their safety and freedom. Once again “EID MUBARAK” to you all. Baraka Allahu Fiikum

very festival is steeped in age-old traditions that embrace a new shade as you walk across geographical boundaries. Eid-Al-Fitr, also known as the Sugar Feast, brings the month-long Ramzan fasts to an end. The celebrations commence with great gusto after the first sighting of the new moon and are known to last for about three-four days. ‘Eid’ is an Arabic word for festivity and ‘fitr’ means breaking the fast. While traditions may vary, food is central to almost every celebration in the form of grand family feasts. Here’s how countries across the globe ring in Eid festivities differently, yet with the same spirit. Egypt The celebrations last for four days and unlike other countries, fish recipes form the centerpiece of the feast along with other delicacies like Fata (a classic Egyptian dish made with meat, rice, onions and vinegar) and Kahk (cookies filled with nuts and wrapped in powdered sugar). Afghanistan Egg fights are unique to the Eid celebrations in Afghanistan where men gather in parks with hard-boiled eggs, trying to break the each other’s egg. This is popularly known as Tokhm-Jangi.

How Countries Around the World Celebrate Eid T Tu urk rkey key ey Turkey
Eid is celebrated as a holiday of sweets and is popularly known as ‘Seker Bayrami’. Children visit relatives and neighbours to greet them and are gifted with sweets like Baklava and Turkish delight as a blessing. South East Asia Beef rendang (spicy meat curry), ketupat (dumplings), dodol (toffee-like confection) and lemang (a glutinous rice cake cooked in bamboo) are some of the dishes that adorn the menu. It is celebrated in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and with great enthusiasm in Indonesia where it is known as Lebaran. These countries follow the custom of mudik or balik kampung, where people meet their family and relatives and ask for forgiveness. Pelitas (oil lamps) are used to illuminate homes.
IIndonesia Ind In ndo done don nesi sia ia Besides the common South-Asian traditions, they prepare a special cake called ‘Kue Lapis Legit’, also known as the thousand-layer cake. It is inspired by the Dutch cuisine and is made with flour, butter and a host of spices. Burma People feast on desserts made with semolina like semolina pudding or cakes. The Burmese
biryani, loaded with meat, spices and dry fruits, is also a favourite. Somalia Besides the elaborate banquets, xalwo or more commonly known as halvo, is served as a special delicacy. It is a simple sweet made with cornstarch, sugar, spices and oil.
Saudi Arabia In some areas, it is a common tradition that people will put large rugs on one of main streets of their neighbourhood and each household shares their meals with the others. India & Pakistan The night before Eid is called ‘Chaand Raat’. Women often apply henna on their hands and feet. Elders distribute gifts, money or sweets which are popularly known as Eidi. Diverse delights like Seviyan (vermicelli pudding), Hyderabadi Haleem (mutton stew), Kebabs and Nihaari Gosht are savoured. Iraq Dates are given utmost significance and a dish called Klaicha must be prepared by every household. Klaicha is a rose-scented cookie filled with dates and nuts. p f http://food.ndtv.com/

Tips for Maintaining Your Health After Ramadan
very year, ar, the Holy month of Ramadan provides us with the opportunity to eliminate unhealthy eating patterns and gives our overburdened digestive systems a much needed break. During this sacred month, the rituals of fasting, night prayer and reading the Holy Qur’an on a daily basis can have a transformational effect on our overall sense of well-being and contentment. However, now that the blessed month of Ramadan has passed and the Eid ul-Fitr festivities are over, here are 10 tips
r e t Af for maintaining the incredible health benefits and habits that you worked so hard to gain in Ramadan. 1. Fast Twice a Week Try fasting two days a week after Ramadan. Occasional fasting has also shown to accelerate the activity and growth of nerve cells. To follow the sunnah of the Prophet , try to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “Deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.” [Tirmidhi] Also, try fasting the 6 days of Shawwal. There are enormous spiritual benefits to fasting in Shaw-
wal. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari narrated that the Messenger said: “Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal will be (rewarded) as if he had fasted the entire year.” [Muslim] 2. Have 2-3 Meals a Day Make a habit of eating 2-3 regular meals a day (similar to Ramadan), rather than 6 small ones. The sensation of hunger between meals, contrary to popular belief, can be of great benefit to our physical health. According to a study published by PLOS ONE, the sen sensation of hunger may actually protect against Alzheimer’s dise disease. The feeling of hunger can also have spiritual benefitts too. Ibrahim ibn Adham said said: “Any one who controls his stomach is in control of his dee deen, and anyone who controls his hunger is in control of good beh behavior. Disobedience towards All Allah is nearest to a person who is satiated with a full stomach ach, and furthest away from a per person who is hungry.” 33.. E Eat Dried Fruits Kee Keep eating those dried fruits that you made a habit of eating dur during Ramadan. Allah’s Messenger said: “Whoever has dried dates, then let him break the fast with that, and whoever does not, then let him break the fast with water, for indeed water is purifying.” [Tirmidhi] .Dried dates and figs are both excellent source of iron, fiber and antioxidants that protect against harmful free radicals, which are associated with ageing. If you have a sweet tooth and must have dessert after meals, have three dates instead of a dense, nutrition-deficit piece of chocolate cake. Allah’s Messenger said: “He who eats seven ‘Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them.” [Bukhari]
4. The 80/20 Rule Practise the 80/20 rule and eat only until you are 80% full. A good way to do this is to eat slowly, so you are aware of your satiation level while you eat. Eating on the go or while watching television are surefire ways to overeat and hinder your body’s ability to properly digest what you consume. During Ramadan, the ritual of fasting allowed us to consciously recognise our body’s hunger and satiation signals. Therefore, avoid returning to mindless eating habits and most importantly beware of overeating, as the Messenger of Allah was reported to have said: “The people who most eat their fill in this world will be the most hungry on the Day of Resurrection.” [Ibn Majah] 5. Use the Rule of Thirds Ramadan was an excellent opportunity to learn how to plan our meals carefully and avoid the after-iftar slump that hindered our ability to pray taraweeh comfortably. After Ramadan, use the rule of thirds to keep your daily energy levels up and prevent the sense of heavy-headedness that often follows a heavy meal. Our wise Prophet Muhammad
once said: “A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.” [Ibn Majah] 6. Keep the Sadaqah Flowing Keep the sadaqah flowing and reap the mental health rewards of giving. If you were supporting disadvantaged families in Ramadan, continue to do so after Ramadan. The act of giving, whether of your finances, skills or time, is extremely rewarding not only in the Hereafter but also here on Earth. Evidence has shown that small gestures of kindness or more significant ones, such as volunteering in the community, can substantially increase your overall sense of happiness and satisfaction. “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is allEncompassing and Knowing.” [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 261]

Eid ul Fitr for Children
A
s many Muslims today say “Eid is like our Christmas”, and in a way, it is. It is one of the two celebrations that Muslims celebrate (Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha). With the busyness of Ramadhan or the fact that many want to remain focussed on the blessed month and not pre-occupied with many worldly things, it can be difficult to plan a massive shindig for Eid. But it need not be a hassle. With pre planning, internet shopping and things that you can make at home, your Eid celebration planning should be a doddle. Eid is a time for contemplation, celebration, gift giving and family and friends. It is especially important for children, especially young ones, as we should try and instil in them the importance of Eid from a young age. Children living in the west, because of a lack of understanding of Eid and usually due to the fact that some parents don’t make a big deal out of it, don’t feel Eid the way I think it should be felt. It becomes more like a “Yehlets-party-’cos-now-we-can-eat” type of day. Children often feel uncomfortable and bored on Eid (dressed up in scratchy clothes, masjid early in the morning, visiting endless family…) and so they can easily lose sight of the fun of Eid. So when Christmas comes around and they see the huge deal it is, inevitably, to them, it holds more importance than Eid. Which is why they need to know that some people celebrate Christmas, and it is a special time for them, m, and we celebrate Eid, and it is
a special time for us. So, how can we make m Eid fun for the little ones? How can we make it a time they will remember? Here are some simple ideas to make planning Eid easier for you, and make it a fun time for the little ones. School If your child is at a mainstream school, the school may not be celebrating Eid, although many schools do acknowledge different religious festivals and teach the children about it. Encourage your child to write Eid cards for their friends. You can purchase Eid cards in most Islamic bookshops, but also from Amazon .You can also buy sweets and send them into school for your child’s class, and maybe ask the teacher to put up an Eid information poster, you could encourage your child to make one. Presents You don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds on presents, but you can find some lovely children’s gifts on www.islam4kids.com. It might also be worth looking out for sales in mainstream stores for clothes and toys (Mothercare, Early Learning Centre ). You can find wonderful gifts for adults and children here www.sirat.com. You can even encourage your child to make their own Eid cards or even presents for family members, or let them help choose presents for others, while teaching them the importance of giving gifts in Islam, and that gifts don’t have to be big or expensive.
Party If the weather is nice, why not have a barbecue for Eid. Either way, a gathering of family and friends is great for everyone, not just the kids. Remember to include non-Muslim friends/ family, and invite your child’s friends also. It may be a nice touch to let your child choose a theme for the party “Eid Tea Party”, for example. With regards to food, you could help them to bake for the party, cupcakes, or a main cake. Decorations You can buy decorations- sure. But why not let the kids to make their own? There are many websites that can give you ideas. Alternatively or together with homemade decorations, you can visit a party shop and get all of your decorations in one day. Get the kids to help decorate aswell. It will be a fun build up to the party! Party bags/party games If there will be afew children at your party, why not plan some party games and give party bags. You can tweak many traditional party games to suit your needs (ie- ‘pass the parcel’, a game in which the children pass a present to music, when the music stops the child who has the present opens one layer. There is usually a small gift between every layer. You can use children’s nasheeds for this game). You can buy anything to put in party bags or games. Things like these badges are really sweet. You can also get Islamic stickers and small books/ toys for party pags. For any Londoners, there is a fabulous Islamic shop, Zam Zam, on Green Street, near Upton Park where you can purchase things like stickers and badges.
Not losing sight of the reason for Eid Amongst the party games and food, we can easily lose sight of why we are celebrating Eid. In order to feel the true essence of Eid, it might be worth finding somewhere where Eid salaat is prayed outside, or where there is an Eid fair, so that the family can be part of a wider community Eid celebration. When it comes to your celebration at home, a good idea is to encourage the child- prior to Eid, to write a short story about their favourite time in Ramadhan, to read to family and friends at the Eid party. Or you can encourage them to write and perform a play about Ramadhan. Something as small as (for older children) learning a new surah during Ramadhan and reciting it as an opening for the Eid party can be a lovely touch. Maybe they can recite ahadith about Eid and what we are to do on Eid, and why. This can gradually become a yearly tradition. InshaAllah (God Willing), you found this short blog post useful! I do hope that you all have a blessed Ramadhan, and an Eid full of goodness, love, joy and lots of remembrance of Allah.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University MSA Hosts Iftar Our peers are often curious about Ramadan and why it’s such an important facet of the religion. So, on June 27, KPU’s MSA hosted an Iftar to educate students on the holy month and allow them to take part in the opening of the fast. The turnout of the event was phenomenal! It was heart-warming to see students from various backgrounds and religions so enthusiastic to take part in this educational event! The evening included a Ramadan Talk, Prayer, Afghani Dinner, Trivia, and Prizes. Both Muslims and Non-Muslims found the event quite enjoyable as they were able to connect with their peers while learning about the holy month. The most rewarding aspect was when our jar was full of responses to our Trivia Questions and many Non-Muslims got all the answers correct! Despite being from different programs and back-
grounds, there was one common thing that united the organizing committee - bringing the KPU community together to educate them on Ramadan and allow them to take part in the breaking of the fast. Despite the extremely short time frame of three weeks, we were able to host an Iftar for 75 students and staff at KPU. It was encouraging to see so much support from the community to help us put on this event. A huge thanks to our Sponsors for their generosity: KPU International, Kwantlen Student Association, Medicine Guru Pharmacy, Al Iman Islamic Centre, exemplify how caring and inclusive Muslims are. If you have any quesand Al Ameen Newspaper. Self Respect!
By:Shabnam Sh b Khan h – Family Counsellor Self-respect is crucial to self-care because it protects you from settling for less when you deserve the best. This is toxic to how you view yourself and how you allow others to treat you, your values and your boundaries. If you allow others to trample over your expectations constantly, you’re debasing your worth and chopping away at your self-esteem. You might be afraid that if you have high standards for yourself, people might perceive you as a high-maintenance person and even abandon you in the process. At the end of the day, your opinion of yourself and what you deserve is all that truly matters in life. Having high standards for yourself, your career and relationships protects you in the long-run. Think of things that fall below your standards as bad experiences. You’re not getting what you need and want out of it, but the person on the other side is. It’s not worth the investment if someone else is benefiting from the positive return. Life is too short to waste your energy by allocating resources into goals that are not truly your own. Caring for ourselves means remaining authentic and recognizing our true passions. Don’t be pressured into picking a certain career path just because society says it’s the right one for you, don’t always settle for crappy jobs just because they’ll pay the rent, don’t pursue a major just because of its financial rewards unless it’s something that really interests you. Some-

times you will have to do with what you have in order to survive, but be sure you’re still looking for ways to improve yourself and progress to something better and something that represents your true self. For example, if you dream of writing the next big screenplay, continue working on it when you have the time. Setting aside time to pursue your dreams is important because these are things no one can take away from you. You own the right to all of your dreams and the ability to make them come to life. The key is to still be practical, but also to be passionate. You were not meant to live this life doing just what is required to survive; you were meant to live life chasing your dreams. From the pen of the Founding Editor of ‘The Miracle.’ a lover boy. The next day, I boarded the Pakistan
From the Cockpit of a Jumbo -747 aircraft
I
n the year 1980, I was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer and posted to Cherat, a beautiful hill station at an elevation of 4,500 feet about thirty miles from Peshawar. There was only one mode of transport called the ‘Khattak Bus’ that arrived and departed once a day for dropping off and picking up passengers of Cherat. Pubbi, on the main GT road, about fifteen miles down the hills was the only access point to catch any other transportation. Therefore, coming in and going out of Cherat had to be planned according to the timings of the ‘Khattak Bus.’ Cherat cantonment was a well-guarded and gated community controlled by the Pakistan Army. It was the training center for the Commandos of the Special Services Group (SSG). Commandos of Pakistan Army were a different breed. Most of them were passionate and dedicated souls with a carefree attitude towards life. The mountains around Cherat always echoed with the laughter of these brave and lively officers. Air Force had a small setup of NO.411 Squadron of the Air Defense Weapon Corps (ADWC). NO. 213 Flight of Air Traffic Control (ATC) also formed a part of the same squadron. Air Base Peshawar looked after the administration needs of the Air Force personnel posted at Cherat. Cherat Approach Control was the most complex station that I ever worked at in my entire Air Traffic Control service. Islamabad, Dhamial, Kamra, Risalpur, and Peshawar were the five aerodromes located within the Control Zone. It extended from ground to an unlimited altitude with a sixty nautical mile radius centered at Attock Bridge. All domestic and international commercial flights flying in and out of Peshawar and Islamabad soared though this area. The Approach Control was not equipped with radar and as such all traffic was controlled by listen-
ing to reported position of the aircraft. Controllers formed a mental picture of all the positioned aircrafts and provided separation to air traffic by marking at the paper strips. This extraordinary station allowed controllers to gain tremendous amount of confidence in their abilities. Control Zone of sixty nautical miles, in rush hours, was filled with all types of aircraft ranging from low level flying helicopters of army to the subsonic and supersonic fighter aircraft of Air Force. Medium body and wide body, domestic and International commercial flights comprising of Fokker to Jumbo aircraft also transited through the same air space. Flight Lieutenant Salman Yaseen performed as Senior Air Traffic Control Officer (SATCO). He was a sweet soul and my immediate boss at Cherat. On a weekend, I went to my parents’ home in Islamabad which was a few hours’ drive from Cherat. My wife Shaheen was my fiancée at that time. She lived in Karachi with her parents. When I talked to her by telephone from Islamabad, she inquired about my plan of visiting Karachi. I bragged to her that I will reach there the next day, if she asked me to come. She knew that I was to report back to Cherat the next day and that it wasn’t possible to reach Karachi so soon. I always considered her to be more realistic and was confident that she would not put me under the test. However, to my surprise she asked me to visit her the next day. Perhaps, she called my bluff. Being a love struck young boy and an officer of the Air Force- it became a matter of honoring my words. I was also certain that the Air Force wouldn’t consider it a matter of honor, if I asked for leave under the pretext that I have promised my fiancée to see her in Karachi. My adventurous mind presented a perfect plan to honor the words of an Air Force Officer and
International Airlines Jumbo- 747 flight from Islamabad to Karachi at a time, when I was supposed to be boarding a bus for reporting back for duty in Cherat. Because of my experience, I was aware that the flight I was boarding would contact my workplace immediately after takeoff. It would be under the control of Cherat Approach for another ten to twelve minutes. Therefore; As soon as I boarded the plane, I introduced myself to the air hostess and requested her to immediately deliver my note to the captain of the aircraft that read: “Dear Captain, Sir—please ask my SATCO, Flight Lieutenant Salman Yaseen at Cherat Approach Control to approve my ten days emergency leave. I am on board your aircraft, and I am your Air Traffic Controller at Cherat Approach-.” Flying Officer Nusrat Hussain. Few minutes after takeoff, the air hostess told me that the captain wanted to see me in the cockpit. I was expecting it because I knew that my boss at Cherat would like to hear from me. The captain asked me to take the jump seat in the cockpit of Jumbo-747 and gave me the headset to speak with the SATCO. After occupying the jump seat and adjusting the headset, I transmitted-, ‘Cherat Approach control, this is Flying Officer Nusrat from Pakistan- 301. I heard the sweet voice of the SATCO over the headset. He inquired;‘Yes Nusrat— what is it-?’ I replied in a humble tone-, ‘Sir—I had to go to Karachi in an extremely urgent emergency situation, please approve my leave for ten days.’ There was a silence of few minutes on the radio, then came the sweet voice of the SATCO-, ‘Ok Nusrat, and come back after ten days.’ ‘Yes, Sir— and Thank you very much!’ I replied and headed back to my seat after thanking the captain and his first officer in the cockpit. Flight Lieutenant Khursheed, a dear friend of

H He llater thatt after approving my leave, the SATCO put his hand on his head thinking and astonishingly said, ‘How I could have refused the leave when he was already in the aircraft climbing to thirty-three thousand feet outbound for Karachi’? Upon my return to duty, the SATCO was eager to know the urgent nature of the emergency. He summoned me to his office and asked me the straight question in somewhat of a serious mood, ‘Flying Officer Nusrat—so let us hear exactly about the urgent emergency.’ There was obviously no such emergency response in my arsenal that could have satisfied his later line of questions. I replied by almost bringing tears into my eyes-, ‘Sir—I am thankful that you approved my leave, but please do not ask me again about the nature of my emergency. Sir, it is a very personal family matter, and I cannot disclose it to anyone.’ His expressions revealed that he uttered the fourletter word for me in his mind. But he generously smiled, winked at me and said-, ‘Ok— carry on, young man.’ They were great and generous Commanders of the Air Force, who often knowingly ignored my sometime naughty behavior. The founding Editor of ‘The Miracle’ is writing his life experiences in the Pakistan Air Force, Bahrain Amiri Air Force and his time in Canada. We will be publishing excerpt from his book in the upcoming editions of ‘The Miracle.’ The readers are requested to frankly comment on the article. --The Managing Editor.
