QUETTA: A powerful suicide bomb blast here at Sandeman Civil Hospital left 71 persons, including lawyers and journalists, dead and 108 critically injured. The suicide bomber blew himself up outside the gate of emergency ward of the hospital. Senior leader Baz Muhammad Kakar was among the 25 lawyers killed while two journalists also became victims. Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Khan Zehri and Inspector General of Police Ahsan Mehboob confirmed that it was a suicide bomb explosion. Former Supreme Court Bar Association president Kamran Murtaza said senior lawyer leader and ex-president of Balochistan High Court Bar Association Baz Muhammad Kakar and other senior lawyer leaders were killed in the blast. “Twenty-five lawyers were killed while most of the injured were also lawyers,” he added. According to Home Minister Sarfraz Bugti, some 71 persons had died so far while 108 others were injured. The terrorists targeted lawyers who were gathered at the hospital where the body of Balochistan Bar Association President Bilal Anwar Kasi was brought after being gunned down by unknown armed men on Manno Jan Road earlier in the morning.A cameraman of a private TV channel was among the dead. Besides lawyers, the injured also included journalists. “Shehzad Khan, cameraman of private channel Aaj News and Mehmood, cameraman of Dawn News, died in the blast while covering the lawyers who gathered at the hospital after the body of their slain leader was brought there,” a police official said. Most of the dead and the injured were

lawyers, he added. Faridullah, reporter of Dunya News and Fateh Shakir, cameraman of 92 News, were among the injured. Advocate Sangat Jamaldini, son of Senator Jahanzeb Jamaldini, was also reportedly injured. The police said the unknown miscreants opened indiscriminate fire at Bilal Anwar Kasi, killing him on the spot. His body was later shifted to Sandeman Civil Hospital for postmortem and legal formalities. Soon after the targeted killing of Bilal Anwar Kasi, a large number of lawyers reached Civil Hospital. Media teams also reached there to cover the incident. During that, a powerful bomb explosion happened, leaving many dead and injured, the police said. The blast, which was heard at far away places, created panic and harassment among the people. Several vehicles parked in the premises of the hospital were also damaged while window panes of the hospital and nearby buildings were shattered. The firing also took place at the hospital soon after the incident. The law enforcement agencies including the Frontier Corps, Police and Balochistan Constabulary cordoned off the entire areas. Most of the injured were shifted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Quetta . The hospital sources said some 37 bodies were placed at Sandeman Civil Hospital, 15 at CMH Quetta and the remaining at other hospitals. According to the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS), it was a suicide explosion. “Eight kilogram explosives and ball bearings were used in the blast,” the BDS said. “No cavity was found at the blast site while bearings were found at the walls.” It confirmed that a suicide bomber had blown himself up. Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Khan Zehri strongly condemned the blast and said the culprits involved in this act of terror would be brought to justice. “Stern action will be taken against the elements involved in acts of terror,” he said.He directed the authorities concerned to provide all health care facilities to the injured. Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti said the terrorists had attacked the lawyers. The personnel deployed for the hospital’s security would be taken to task for their lapse, he said, adding that an inquiry would be held to look into their negligence. “Balochistan is in conflict zone and the government and the people of the province are in a state of war. They are fighting against terrorists and our war will continue till complete elimination of the terrorists,” he said. Source:

Turkey and Russia have reached a clear consensus on normalising ties, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin said in a press conference following a meeting between the two. Putin said the two discussed the expansion of economic ties between the two countries. “The return of our tourists to Turkey is on our agenda,â€? Putin said, adding that the two countries are working to restore charter ights from Russia to Turkey. Erdogan said steps will be taken in “joint investment issuesâ€? and other economic ties, adding that a gas project with Russia will be made a reality soon. It was the ďŹ rst meeting between Putin and Erdogan since Turkey shot down a Russian ďŹ ghter jet last November, sparking a deep diplomatic crisis. â€? Putin said as the two met. Erdogan said that Turkey was entering a “very dierent periodâ€? in relations with Russia, and that solidarity between the two countries would help the resolution of regional problems. Erdogan also thanked his Russian counterpart for a telephone call after the failed coup attempt on July 15, saying it “brought our people great happinessâ€?. Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands, reporting from St Petersburg, said that “one of the interesting things about the whole spat between Russia and Turkey is how much of it seemed to be driven by the personalities of the two leaders; not actually to do with any of the interests the two countries sharedâ€?. Now, following the failed coup attempt, analysts say ties between the two could deepen - with Erdogan publicly making it clear he feels let down by the United States and the European Union. Why midnight of 15 August 1947 for Indian Independence?

W

hhy was the h midnight id i h off 15thh August 1947 chosen as the date & time for Indian Independence? We can divide the above question into 3 sub-questions:

Why 1947? Why 15th Aug? Why midnight? Let us pick each of the above and find out the answers

Why 1947? The awakening of masses by Gandhi and the activities of Bose behind the scenes (of strengthening Indian National Army) which had intensified during 1940s were already a cause of concern for the British. By the time the World War II had come to an end in 1945, the British were financially weak

(sources indicate they were in the verge of bankruptcy) and were struggling to rule their own country, let alone their colonies. The victory of Labour party in the Britain elections of 1945 was received very well by our freedom fighters because the Labour party had promised to work on granting independence to English colonies including India. Lord Wavell initiated talks with Indian leaders for Indian Independence and inspite of several disagreements and disruptions, it was gaining momentum and in Feb 1947, Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the last viceroy of India to oversee the transfer of power. The plan initially was to transfer power from Britain to India by June 1948. Immediately after assuming power in Feb 1947, Lord Mountbatten had begun a series of talks with Indian leaders for a consensus. But things were not so simple especially due to conflicts between Jinnah & Nehru on the matter of partition. Jinnah’s demand for a separate nation had instigated large scale communal disturbances across India and upon passing of each day, situation was going out of control. This was cer-

Abu Bakrah (R), stated that the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: Allah’s Apostle said: Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle. 2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly. 3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) . 4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage g g to Mecca)) 5. To observe fast duringg the month of Ramadan. Sahih Bukhari

Understanding Islam and Muslims in the West today, whereas Muslims have religion always uppermost in their minds, and make no division between secular and sacred. They believe that the Divine Law, the Shari’a, should be taken very seriously, which is why issues related to religion are still so important.

By: Islamic Texts Society Source: Islamic Affairs Department-Embassy of Saudi Arabia.

What is Islam ?

I

slam is not a new religion, but the same truth that God revealed through all His prophets to every people. For a fifth of the world’s population, Islam is both a religion and a complete way of life. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness, and the majority have nothing to do with the extremely grave events which have come to be associated with their faith.

Who are the Muslims?

One billion people from a vast range of races, nationalities and cultures across the globe – from the southern Philippines to Nigeria – are united by their common Islamic faith. About 18% live in the Arab world; the world’s largest Muslim community is in Indonesia; substantial parts of Asia and most of Africa are Muslim, while significant minorities are to be found in the Soviet Union, China, North and South America, and Europe.

Do Islam and Christianity have different origins? the Day of Judgement and individual accountability for actions; in God’s complete authority over human destiny and in life after death. Muslims believe in a chain of prophets starting with Adam and including Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Elias, Jonah, John the Baptist, and Jesus, peace be upon them. But God’s final message to man, a reconfirmation of the eternal message and a summing-up of all that has gone before was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through Gabriel.

How does someone become a Muslim?

Simply by saying ‘there is no god apart from God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God.’ By this declaration the believer announces his or her faith in all God’s messengers, and the scriptures they brought.

What does Islam mean?

What do Muslims believe?

The Arabic word ‘Islam’ simply means ‘submission’, and derives from a word meaning ‘peace’. In a religious context it means complete submission to the will of God. ‘Mohammedanism’ is thus a misnomer because it suggests that Muslims worship Muhammad rather than God. ‘Allah’ is the Arabic name for God, which is used by Arab Muslims and Christians alike.

Muslims believe in One, Unique, Incom- Why does Islam often seem strange? parable God; in the Angels created by Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in Him; in the prophets through whom His the modern world. Perhaps this is because revelations were brought to mankind; in religion does not dominate everyday life

Names Of A l l a h (SWT) & Mohammad (PBUH) Last edition Al Wali name of Allah(swt) Names were Muqtasid Mohammad(saw) name.

No. Together with Judaism, they go back to the prophet and patriarch Abraham, and their three prophets are directly descended from his sons, Muhammad from the elder son Ishmael, and Moses and Jesus from the younger son Isaac. Abraham established the settlement which today is the city of Makkah, and built the Ka’ba towards which all Muslims turn when they pray.

What is the Ka’ba?

The Ka`ba is the place of worship which God commanded Abraham and Ishmael to build over four thousand years ago. The building was constructed of stone on what many believe was the original site of a sanctuary established by Adam. God commanded Abraham to summon all mankind to visit this place, and when pilgrims go there today they say ‘At Thy service, O Lord’, in response to Abraham’s summons.

Who is Muhammad?

Muhammad, was born in Makkah in the year 570, at a time when Christianity was not yet fully established in Europe. Since his father died before his birth, and his mother shortly afterwards, he was raised

by his uncle from the respected tribe of Quraysh. As he grew up, he became known for his truthfulness, generosity and sincerity, so that he was sought after for his ability to arbitrate in disputes. The historians describe him as calm and meditative. Muhammad was of a deeply religious nature, and had long detested the decadence of his society. It became his habit to meditate from time to time in the Cave of Hira near the summit of Jabal al-Nur, the ‘Mountain of Light’ near Makkah.

How did Muhammad become a prophet and a messenger of God?

At the age of 40, while engaged in a meditative retreat, Muhammad received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel. This revelation, which continued for twenty-three years, is known as the Quran. As soon as he began to recite the words he heard from Gabriel, and to preach the truth which God had revealed to him, he and his small group of followers suffered bitter persecution, which grew so fierce that in the year 622 God gave them the command to emigrate. This event, the Hijra, ‘migration’, in which they left Makkah for the city of Madinah some 260 miles to the north, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar. After several years, the Prophet and his followers were able to return to Makkah, where they forgave their enemies and established Islam definitively. Before the Prophet died at the age of 63, the greater part of Arabia was Muslim, and within a century of his death Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far East as China.

idnight 14-15 August 1947, a broadcast in English, followed by in Urdu reached the listeners “ This is Pakistan Broadcasting Service”. This broadcast was followed by recitation of Holy Quran (Surah Al Fatah 1-4) by Maulana Zahir al Qasmi. to Independence

lthough the British Empire expanded, the native Indians never accepted their dominance. On May 10, 1857, Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army, drawn mostly from Muslim units from Bengal, rose against the British in the Meerut garrison some 80 km from Delhi and marched to Delhi. The rising was mainly to protest against the use of the newly issued rifle bullets, alleged to have a wax sealing made of the fats of pigs that was to be removed from the teeth before use. Since pigs are forbidden in the Islam, the Muslim soldiers resented its use and took up arms against their British masters. At Delhi, they captured the famous “Lal Qila” (Red Fort) and reinstated Bahadar Shah Zafar (the last Mughul monarch) to throne. Soldiers in other garrisons also followed the suit and soon much of north and central India was plunged into a year-long insurrection against the British. The British reacted and laid a siege of the Fort, which continued for a while but finally the British owing to their access to artillery and large number of forces stormed the Fort. Bahadur Shah Zafar fled to Humayun’s tomb. The British plundered Delhi and killed many Indian soldiers (and civilians) and artillery was set up in the main mosque in the city to bombard suspected localities, specially the homes of the Muslim nobility. The British forces also arrested Bahadur Shah and days after the arrest, a British officer William Hodson shot Shah’s sons Mirza Moghul, Mirza Khizr Sultan, and Mirza Abu Bakr and shamefully presented their heads to the Shah.

Ali Garh to Muslim League As a consequence to 1857 events, the British government brought India under the direct control of Crown and a Viceroy was appointed to represent the Crown. They also increased the number of British soldiers in relation to native and allowed only British soldiers to handle artillery. In 1877 Queen Victoria took the title of Empress of India. Bahadur Shah was exiled to Rangoon, in Burma where he died in 1862, finally bringing the Mughal dynasty to an end. Although the “Jange-e-Azadi” (Liberation War) was brutally quelched, the spark for independence and throwing away the yoke of slavery at the hands of the British had been ignited. While the War of Independence had many

repercussions, the intolerance towards the Muslims by the British increased manifold and the Muslims felt deprived and left out in fields of education and representation in government service. Attacks by Hindu fundamentalists against religious conversion, cow killing, and the preservation of Urdu in Arabic script deepened their fears of minority status. In order to keep the Muslims in the mainstream, rose Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and launched a movement for Muslim regeneration that culminated in the founding of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1875 (later renamed Aligarh Muslim University in 1921). Its objective was to educate Muslims by emphasizing the compatibility of Islam with western knowledge. On 30 December 1906 the All-India Muslim League was founded to safeguard the interests of the Muslims. A delegation also met with the viceroy, Gilbert John Elliot, seeking special considerations in government service and electorates. This had positive effect and in 1911 When King-Emperor George V visited India, he announced the reversal of the partition of Bengal and the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to present day New Delhi.

Jinnah and Pakistan Movement Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who had initially joined the Congress was grossly dissatisfied with the Congress attitude towards Muslims and thus joined the Muslim League in 1913. It was with his efforts that Congress recognized the separate position of the Muslims and the Muslims’ demand for a separate electorate as a part of the Lucknow Pact. However the Hindu prejudice against the Muslims could not be hidden for long and the publication of Nehru Report (1928) was a great setback to Lucknow Pact, since the Nehru Report negated all its clauses. It became evident that Congress and Hindus wanted to become the ruler of India on the basis of numerical strength and make Muslims their subjects. This was not acceptable to Muslims since they had ruled India for centuries and after British subjugation, they were again to fall under the Hindus as their subjects. Jinnah therefore refused to accept the report and presented his famous 14 Points to solve the political problems in India. The Muslims wished that their separate identity should be recognized and provided constitutional safeguards to protect their rights. It was then that the first proponents of independent Muslim nation began to appear. Among the first of these was writer/

m

a new nation was carved out of the British India after a long and tiring struggle of Muslims of India. For years since 711 AD, when Muhammad Bin Qasim invaded the Indian sub-continent, Muslims had been the rulers till subjugated by the British in 1857. Therefore, the independence in 1947 from the British yoke was a God-given opportunity to live as per the aspirations of Islamic values. From 1947 till date, Pakistan’s history has seen many ups and downs, finally losing half of it in 1971. The history of Pakistan can easily be divided into roughly 10-years brackets, each having own peculiarities and repercussions on its future.

en and women are born to complement each h other. h T To support each h other. And that’s the purpose of their presence in this world. A country prospers only if and when both are allowed to depict their talent and contribute something to the society to make it a better place to live in. It’s ridiculous to suppress one or other. No country can shine until its women are not as successful as its men or vice versa. At the time of the independence of Pakistan, Quaid -e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of the nation, talked about the importance of the role of women and their empowerment for the betterment of Pakistan on several occasions. And his sister, Fatima Jinnah, became the role model for his words. Since then, the women of Pakistan are striving hard to overcome all the hurdles in becoming successful to make an identity of their own. Many have succeeded, and became internationally recognized, often award-winning. But there a few unsung heroes of Pakistan who would deserve the worldwide recognition, too. Pakistani Woman Gets “Google Funding” On Her First Try Umaimah Mendhro is one of the very few people who won funding from Google on her first pitch. It sounds like a lucky break, but she had been putting together an extensive plan for a very long time! Even when she was young, Umaimah wanted to build and lead her own multi-national company. Going to Harvard University also played a prominent role in her childhood aspirations. Even though she comes from an extremely humble background she still had dreams of one day making a big name for herself! Pakistani woman wins global humanitarian award A Pakistani woman has been awarded the first-ever Global Humanitarian Award for Women’s and Children’s Health for her contributions to Pakistan’s health and education sector. Chairman of the Aman Foundation, Fayeeza Naqvi, along with her husband Arif Naqvi was honoured as one of the four winners of the first-ever Global Humanitarian Award for Women’s and Children’s Health at the 2016 International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) in Nusa Dua, Indonesia. Upon winning the award, Naqvi said, “Aman is dedicated to promoting the centrality of family, and dignity of life for all. The ‘Sukh’ program was created with this mission in mind, and seeks to foster gender equality, by giving women the power of choice. Pakistani doctor wins global entrepreneurship award for doctHERs Sara is the co-founder of doctHERs, a digital platform that links poverty-stricken communities to high quality healthcare by inducting qualified female doctors into the workforce. Pakistan-born, Komal Ahmad, develops phone app to feed almost 600,000 homeless people One lunch changed Komal Ahmad’s life. It was 2011. She had just come back from Navy summer training and was attending the University of California at Berkeley to start work on her undergraduate degree. While she was walking near campus one fall day, a homeless man approached her, asking for money to buy food because he was hungry. Instead of giving him cash, Ahmad invited the man to lunch. As they ate, he told her his story. He was a soldier recently returned from Iraq and had a bad turn of luck. “He’d already gone on two deployments and now he’s come back, he’s 26 and on the side of the road begging for food,” Ahmad said. “It just blew my mind.” Pakistani female doctor wins prestigious HRH Prince of Wales Award ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani female doctor has been announced the winner of prestigious third HRH The Prince of Wales Young Sustainability Entrepreneur Prize by Uni-

The History of the Pakistan Independance movement will be incomplete without mentioning the services of the great Muslim women who struggle for freedom along with the men, Begum Rana Liaquat Ali khan also known as the “Mother of Pakistan” is one of them. Muslims of the Indo-Pakistan sub-continent and in revitalizing the Muslim League. Liaquat Ali khan and Begum Rana became a defining moment in Pakistan’s history when she accompanied her husband to London, in May 1933 to meet Mohammad Ali Jinnah and convinced him to return to British occupied India to resume the leadership of the All India Muslim League. Her residence ‘Gul-e-Ra’ana’ in Delhi was the centre of all major political activities of the All-India Muslim League. She firmly believed that education and economic independence were two of the most important factors that would help women recognize and achieve their just rights. In 1949 she called for an all Pakistan women conference, which announced the formation of a voluntary non political organization” All Pakistan Women As-

sociation (APWA)”for the social, educational and cultural uplift of the women. She was nominated as its first president. From the pen of the Founding Editor of ‘The Miracle.’ By:Sqn. Ldr. (R)Nusrat Hussain nh.guidingstar@gmail.com

T

he flight plan of ‘Pakistan ONE’ came in for my signature on the night of 16th August 1988. I was the Duty Air Traffic Controller (DATCO) in the Control Tower at the Air Force Base Chaklala. Pakistan One filed a return flight plan to and from Bhawalpur because the regular Air Traffic Control service was not available at the Bhawalpur airfield. It showed an early morning departure of a C-130 carrying Pakistan ONE, General Zia-ul-Haq, president of Pakistan. Wing Commander Mashud was the captain of the aircraft and Flt. Lt. Sajid occupied the seat of the copilot. I had personally known both the pilots: I played cricket in the Base cricket team captained by Wing Commander Mashud. He was a soft senior who kept a friendly atmosphere during our cricket matches. Flt. Lt. Sajid was a decent and respectful junior who sometimes visited the Control Tower. After night duty on my way home, I had to stop my jeep because of the red light on the barrier installed at the road connecting the tarmac of the VVIP aircraft. Because of the flight plan that I had signed late last night, I knew the red stoplight was for the president of Pakistan who must be on his way to the aircraft. Soon the presidential motorcade passed in front of me and I saw General Zial-ul-Haq engaged in a conversation with General Akhtar Abdul Rehman who accompanied him in the back seat of the black limousine. That was the last time I saw General Zia-ul-Haq and General Akhtar Abdul Rehman. On the eve of 17th August 1988 the crash of the C-130 carrying General Zia-ul-Haq hit the media headlines in Pakistan and all around the world. It also carried ten top generals of the Pakistan Army, Arnold L. Raphel, U.S. Ambassador in Pakistan and General Herbert M. Wassom, the U.S. Chief military attaché in Pakistan. Squadron Leader Rahat Siddiqui an intelligent fighter pilot of the Pakistan Air Force also boarded the plane. He was an instructor pilot during my cadetship days at the Risalpur academy. Sir Rahat carried the reputation of an honest and hard working instructor. General Zia-ul-Haq personally selected him to perform as his ADC (Aide-de-camp, a French expression of an assistant to a high military officer or president of state.) Thirtyone people on board the plane died in that tragic crash. Many conspiracy theories erupted after the crash on the national and international screen. Within the country, some blamed the Shia community. A couple of weeks before the crash of General Zia, on 5th August 1988, Allama Arif Hussaini, a renowned Shia leader and Chief of Tehrik-e-Jaffaria Pakistan (TJP), was murdered in Peshawar. Although, General Zia attended the funeral of the slain leader, some from the Shia community blamed him for the murder of their leader. Copilot Flt. Lt. Sajid of the crashed C-130 had recently converted to the Shia sect in religion and some thought that he had conducted a suicide mission to avenge the murder of Arif Hussaini. The claim of the Shia involvement proved bogus. During my tenure in the ISI in 1989, I heard Brigadier Sagheer hinting the copilot for involvement in the crash. He was then head of the Internal Wing of ISI Later, these claims remained unfounded and were discarded by all the investigating agencies including the ISI. Ejaz-ul-Haq, son of General Zia, on December 1 2012 in an interview on Geo TV, accused General Aslam Beg, then vice-chief of the army of being the person behind the conspiracy to kill his father. He believed in the theory of a missile fired by another aircraft. Ejaz-ul-Haq further added that Beg prevented autopsies of the dead to hide the facts and instructed for removal of the wreckage of the

plane. However, Ejaz-ul-Haq provided no proof to his claim. Those who considered it an international conspiracy thought that Zia had created enmity with the Soviet Union by helping the Afghan Mujahedeen. His active role in the war made the Soviets face a humiliating defeat; therefore, K.G.B. involvement in the crash became an obvious logical choice. Other political analysts pointed towards the U.S history of eliminating dictators after they had performed a wanted task. General Zia had outlived his role after the Russians had signed the withdrawal agreement. The USA lost interest in the region as well as in General Zia-ul-Haq. None of the theories provided any concrete evidence associated with the crash. Air Commodore Shahid Kamal acted as the Director of Operations/ACAS Plans for the Pakistan Air Force at Air Headquarters at the time. He claimed to be an instructor pilot of Mashud and a US qualified Systems Safety Specialist trained by the USAF. His theory about the crash, later floated on the internet, attracted some interest. According to him, “When an aircraft rotates during takeoff, the contents of the aircraft tend to shift rearward. Powerful steel and nylon restraints are used to prevent this from happening. If the restraints are slack, work loose or break, the contents will slide towards the tail of the aircraft. This will cause an attendant shift of the center of gravity of the aircraft towards the rear. This rearward shift of the center of gravity will cause the nose of the aircraft to pitch up. The pilot will note this pitch up and try to counter it by pushing forward on the stick.” He termed ‘shift of the center of gravity’ to be the cause of the crash. Air Commodore Kazim, my course mate and a C-130 pilot, responded to the theory of Shahid Kamal. Kazim claimed to have recreated the crash in a simulator. With the loss of elevator the aircraft behaved exactly the same way as happened at Bahawalpur. The only option to control the pitch emerged through power manual trim. It would overreact and would bring aircraft into oscillation. A content of sulfur close to the elevator booster confirmed the theory that a small blast ruptured the elevator control. Air Commodore Abbas Mirza, Assistant Chief of Air Staff Flight Safety, headed the Board of Inquiry formed by the Pakistan Air Force. It also included Air Commodore Muzamil Saeed, Group Captain Zaheer Zaidi and Wing Commander Sabahat Ali Mufti. The Board comprised of professional engineers, fighter pilots and a C-130 pilot. Six air force technicians from the USA also assisted the board. The board visited the crash site and re-created the actual crash. It interviewed many eyewitnesses on the ground and thoroughly examined the wreckage. About 40 key pieces of engines, fuel lines, pumps, fluid samples and many other items of the destroyed aircraft were sent to U.S. and Pakistani laboratories for different analysis. The board sought expert advice from the Lockheed Company, makers of the C-130 Hercules plane. It also engaged many professionals from different fields of explosives, flame patterns, forensic analysis, aircraft instruments and airframe structures. After intensive scrutiny and investigation, the technical inquiry headed by Air Commodore Abbas Mirza submitted a report that spread over 350 pages. The report failed to find any technical reason or pilot error. It pointed to an act of highly sophisticated sabotage. There were no traces of a hit from the ground or air; however, some aircraft parts were found contaminated with strong traces of antimony, potassium, sulfur, phosphorus and, most significantly, pentaerythritol tetra nitrate (PETN) – an explosive used in highly sophisticated sabotage operations. It believed that shortly after takeoff, the detonation of some poisonous gas in the cockpit

instantly paralyzed and incapacitated the pilots without even giving them a chance to transmit any emergency call. The FBI considered it technical failure, but could not produce any solid evidence. The C-130 Hercules aircraft was considered to be the safest aircraft available in the aviation fleet. According to the U.S. Air Force, until 1989 it had a wear and tear rate of 5 percent compared with 10 percent for the B-52 bomber and 20 percent for other fighter aircraft. American Ambassador, Arnold L. Raphel and General Wassom, the U.S. Chief military attaché, had gone to Bhawalpur in another small twin engine aircraft. General Zia-ulHaq had gone to witness the field demonstration of the M-1 tank which Pakistan was considering buying from the United States. After the demonstration he invited the US ambassador to board with him to his C130. General Wassom, also joined them in the presidential flight. The pilot of the aircraft with the call sign ‘Spark-63’ who brought the U.S. Ambassador and the chief military attaché to Bhawalpur, took off for Islamabad without its passengers. Like many other assassinations of high profile personalities in the past, the people involved in the crime remain a mystery.

After The Crash

Air Marshal Dilawar Hussain then performed as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (DCAS) for Operations (OPS). His afternoon nap was disturbed by a telephone call from Air Officer Commanding (AOC) the Air Defense. AOC informed him about the crash of Pakistan ONE killed with all passengers on board. Vice Chief of the Army Staff, General Aslam Beg was on his way to Dhamial Air Base in a separate aircraft after circling over the crash site. Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Hakimullah Durrani was not traceable. A senior officer, Air Commodore Bukhari was sent with a

first generation mobile phone to locate the Air Chief at the Pindi Golf Course. Air Marshal Dilawar rushed to the Central Operation Command (COC) where AOC monitored the in-air situation. When in contact with the Air Chief, Air Marshal Dilawar passed him the arrival time of General Aslam Beg and advised him to receive the General along with the Naval Chief, Admiral Mohammed Khan, at the Dhamial Air Base of Army Aviation. They were the three top men of Pakistan after the crash of General Zia-ul-Haq and they were to decide the fate of Pakistan that evening. They decided to follow the constitution. According to the constitution, The Chairman of the Senate would become the president of Pakistan after the death of General Ziaul-Haq. History acknowledged the role of these three powerful men who, after consultation on the Dhamial tarmac, went straight to the house of Chairman of the Senate, Mr. Ghulam Ishaq Khan. When the three chiefs arrived at the residence of Ghulam Ishaq Khan in Islamabad, his loyal Pathan servant refused to wake up the chairman who was enjoying a sound sleep. It was because of the Pushtoo language used by the Air Chief that the Pathan servant finally woke him. Mr. Ghulam Ishaq Khan at first refused to take over as the president of Pakistan, but then agreed when the three top men assured to back him up. Air Marshal Dilawar called it a splendid work of nature – a man was placed to the highest position in Pakistan while he was sound asleep in his bedroom. Mr. Ghulam Ishaq Khan became the biggest beneficiary of the death of General Zia-ul-Haq. The founding Editor of ‘The Miracle’ is writing his life experiences in the Pakistan Air Force, Bahrain Amiri Air Force and his time in Canada. We will be publishing excerpt from his book in the upcoming editions of ‘The Miracle.’ The readers are requested to frankly comment on the article. --The Managing Editor.

From the mighty stretches of the Karakorams in the North to the vast alluvial delta of the Indus River in the South, Pakistan remains a land of high adventure and nature. Trekking, mountaineering, white water rafting, wild boar hunting, mountain and desert jeep safaris, camel and yak safaris, trout fishing and bird watching, are a few activities, which entice the adventure and nature lovers to Pakistan. Pakistan is endowed with a rich and varied flora and fauna. High Himalayas, Karakoram and the Hindukush ranges with their

alpine meadows and permanent snow line, coniferous forests down the sub-mountain scrub, the vast Indus plain merging into the great desert, the coast line and wetlands, all offer a remarkably rich variety of vegetation and associated wildlife including avifauna, both endemic and migratory. Ten of 18 mammalian orders are represented in Pakistan with species ranging from the world’s smallest surviving mammals, the Mediterranean Pigmy Shrew, to the largest mammal ever known; the blue whale.

Exports of Pakistan

At its simplest, Pakistani cooking today consists of staple foods which are cheap and abundant. Wheat and other flour products is the mainstay of the diet, one familiar form being CHAPATI, unleavened bread akin to a Mexican tortilla. This is made with dough prepared from whole wheat flour. Another basic food is LASSI, milk from which curds and butterfat have been removed. Vegetables, usually seasonal, lentils are commonly used. Families with larger incomes eat more meat eggs, and fruits. And the more affluent cook with GHEE, which is clarified butter, instead of with vegetable oil. From the earliest times, the imaginative - and sometimes heavy - use of spices, herbs, seeds, and flavorings and seasonings have helped cooks transform rather ordinary staple foods into an exotic cuisine. Consider some of the most common of these in wide use in Pakistan today: chilli powder, turmeric, garlic, paprika, black pepper, red pepper, cumin seed, bay leaf, coriander, cardamom, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, saffron, mace, nutmeg, poppy seeds, aniseed, almonds, pistachios, and yogurt. Their use in a wide range of pickles, chutneys, preserves, and sauces, together with curries of all descriptions and special treatment for meats, sea, food, vegetables and lentils, gives Pakistani cooking much of its distinctive character.

Cultural influences, whether religious precepts, practices, and ceremonies or local traditions, or even esthetic preferences, have made their contribution toward the evolution of Pakistani cuisine. Food and The Moghul Emperors A style of cookery called Moghlai’ evolved at the Moghul court and even today it remains centered in Lahore. Some latter-day and widely known survivors of court cookery are, for example, chicken tandoori, a dish in which chicken is cooked at low temperatures in special ovens called TANDOORS, and murgh musallum’ in which the whole chickens are roasted with special spices and ingredients. SHAHI TUKRA, a dessert of sliced bread, milk, cream, sugar and saffron, is another left-over from the days of the Moghuls. Fruit drinks, squeezed from pomegranates, apples, melons, and mangoes, and called SHARBAT, are an important part of the Moghlai cuisine and, indeed, the inspiration for American “sherberts.” Ceremonial occasions such as weddings have inspired a number of fancy dishes. A traditional dish at marriage feasts, for example, is chicken curry with either PILAU or Biryani. Firini, made from cream of rice and milk, is an equally traditional wedding dessert. It is served in clay saucers topped by silver foil.
