Reference, and the Minus Altaf Recipe
gnoring heavy influx of pro Pakistan migrants from India in 1947, the vedaira-community (Feudal class) continued to occupy the key positions; they managed to win national and provincial assembly seats by employing pressure tactics and unfair means. This created an intolerable inequality in the province, and the migrants (muhajirs) felt oppressed. Truth is the Muhajircommunity competed hard in all sectors to get ahead. They eventually became a political reality in Karachi. The Muhajir Qaumi movement headed by its founder Altaf Hussain later converted to Muthidda Qaumi Movement just to silence the objectors. Obviously, MQM was formed to resolve the injustices meted out to the Urdu speaking people in Sind. No doubt, the aim was to fight feudalism, yet the Altaf-India link along with unlawful activities of the party members have always been irritating enough to trigger a general nervousness. With mounting criminal cases, Altaf took refuge in the U.K., from where he has been successfully continuing his control over Karachi through telephone/video link. The recent intolerable hate speech did it all: Previously, MQM was only suspected of having the anti Pakistan elements, but hate speech of Altaf Hussain on August 22 inciting for disturbing the law and order situation of Karachi helped Pakistan to see the true face of Altaf Hussain with utmost clarity. In other words, an ugly side of Altaf Hussain emerged again; knowing clearly what his words were capable of causing, he went off on another tirade, this time condemning news channels by name, inciting violence against them, and, worst of all, insulting and abusing Pakistan – the
country he fled nearly three decades ago for the safe confines of London. His speech invited a tough official action against him and a few other MQM- activists. Altaf not only raised slogans against Pakistan but also called the country “a cancer for entire world”. “Pakistan is cancer for entire world,” he said. “Pakistan is headache for the entire world. Pakistan is the epicentre of terrorism for the entire world. Who says long live Pakistan...it’s down with Pakistan.” Neutrality of the Rangers: The Rangers have done an admirable job in neutralising the law and order challenge that the MQM had posed in the past, and proof of this is in the diminutive attempt at arson and destruction that the party tried to mount following the powerful incitement from its London-based leadership. Good Development: The recent operation has degraded the administrative wing of the party that runs the militant wing and controls the taxation and revenue structure of the party. Fear is when the political wing of the party becomes independent again; crazy Altaf Hussain may give his full attention to the party’s militant wing and on instigating the youth. We are convinced that the “key to peace in Karachi” is in the hands of the New Scotland Yard, of course. Other factor is despite all its ills, MQM has a political base and continues to win elections, even during Clean-up operations targeting militant elements associated with the party. The recent MQM’s victory in the mayoral elections shows that the people of Karachi still want the party to stay in the mainstream of Karachi’s politics. An arrested person has taken oath as the mayor of

Reflections on Pakistan Day Celebrations
By:Zaheer Ali Manki Vancouver The Pakistan Day and the Pakistan Festival celebrations in Vancouver was an event of great pride and pleasure for the community. The credit goes to the Counsel General of Pakistan who was the driving force through his office and the Pakistani Business Community to organise a show of this magnitude.
Karachi - one of the world’s largest cities.wow! However, allowing a jailed person from within the jail boundary needs clarification. Questionable legal wrong: Is there no law that bars a criminal from holding public office! The MQM leader Wasim Akhter has been in prison since July 19 after Anti-Terrorism Court dismissed his pre-arrest interim application in a case for treatment of terrorists will run the metropolis via “video link” from his prison cell. If he has been accused of a nonbailable terrorism charges, why was he allowed to run for a public office? If the mayor is found guilty, a fresh election would be another huge drain from the public exchequer. The U.S. State Department said: “We believe democracies become stronger by allowing expression from diverse voices within society, although we would emphasise that those expressions must be peaceful.” While commenting on last week’s mob attack on media offices in Karachi, the State Department underlines its commitment to a free press. “The United States is committed to defending media freedom. We believe that threats to the independence of the media are unbecoming of any country that counts itself among the world’s democracies,” it says. “Access to free and unfettered press is a pillar of the democratic system and a value shared by all democracies,” the State Depart¬ment concludes. Pakistan government takes serious action: A spokesperson for the Pakistan Interior Ministry in a statement said the British government has been asked in the reference to take legal action against Altaf Hussain for violating British and international laws. The content of the reference as submitted to the British authori-
ties from Pakistan’s Interior Ministry reads as, “British government should take legal action against the elements responsible for instigating public in Pakistan on violence and disrupting peace situation in Pakistan. Altaf Hussain has committed violation of British laws; therefore, British government should take legal action against him.” The reference also attached relevant evidence related to recording of Altaf Hussain’s speeches, in which he incited the public to violence and to attack media organisations in Karachi. It said the MQM founder is responsible for disrupting peace in Pakistan while action should be taken against him. Britain’s Scotland Yard on Tuesday said that it has received full speech of an individual linked with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the founder of whom delivered an anti-Pakistan speech on August 22, sparking outrage in Pakistan. He said that the speech is currently getting translated and after the process, it would be decided whether it should be investigated or not to determine if any laws have been broken. Word of caution: The leaders of MQM and PSP (Pak Serzameen Party) seem to be confusing the issues; there is no need of any MQM as it was based on wrong premises. There never was any discrimination, no hatred towards muhajirs or Urdu speaking people, Urdu is National language, and we are all Urdu speaking. If Farooq Sitar is serious in separating from London, he should quickly move to amend the MQM Constitution. Sources: dawn.com, thenews.com. pk, nation.com.pk
‘Rohingya Day-for Rohingya Muslim Genocide’ By: Gulshan Aalani Rohingya day is to raise awareness about Rohingya people, a Muslim minority being persecuted in Burma (Myanmar). Unfortunately, ignored by many. Most are busy playing drums against Donald Trump, who has not yet done any harm to any Muslims or Muslim countries, yet he has become more hateful by many including ‘Muslims’. Who become brave enough to shout and scream atDonald Trump’s rhetoric. Mr. Khizr Khan the Father of Fallen Soldier (tragedy) angrily and strongly spoke against Trump’s trumpets, showing utmost concern but not a word against otheratrocities happening against Muslims. Such strong speakers should pay more attention to the real issues of the following crimes happening right under his nose..Including the prisons locked up in Guatanamo Bay who are the victims of the U.S. Kangaroo court that blatantly disregards recognized standards of law or Justice, and intentionally disregards the legitimate judicial
court’s legal or ethical obligations of fair and just trials, which in the case of Gitmo Prison’s the verdict is already decided even before the trial and found guilty. Is this democracy, equality and Justice? Some of the many facts of atrocities and suffering of Ro. Muslims: Citizenship has been taken away. Only 1 physician for every 83,000 Rohingya Muslims. About 250,000 are living in concentration camps and another 2 million are living in refugee camps in neighbouring countries. In the concentration camps they get only 200 calories more than what Nazi prisoners would get. No Schools. Not allowed to have a job. Cannot worship freely. Masajid shut down in Ramadan and no Friday. Prayers allowed. Cannot travel freely. Sexual violence and rape of Rohingya women. Learn more about the Rohingya plight @ www.BurmaMuslims.org

The organisers and the business community must have spent lots of time and effort, weeks of hard work for which they all deserve credit. It was a grand event, first for our community at the new location and venue. Excellent PR and prestige. A large number of the community members spent hours enjoying the festivities, Pakistan like weather, waterfront environment and view of the North Shore mountains. The event showcased the Pakistani culture, cuisine and fashion. The venue and the general environment was very pleasant and appealing. I am however not sure if the cost associated with change of location and venue ( Jack Poole Plaza in downtown Vancouver ) compared to Holland Park Surry location, was worth the additional benefits. On the flip side, I felt that overall turnout was perhaps much less than expected. It could be attributed to lack of familiarity with the venue, cost and difficulty of car parking. Cost of food from the food stalls in Vancouver was expected to be little expensive, but not what we saw. The cost was disproportionately high. At the end of the day we came home, quite happy, relaxed and almost feeling like Pakistan Zindabad. It was a good event. Congratulations to our Consulate Staff, Business Community, Sponsors and community at large.

P A K I S T A N Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Monday telephoned Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leader Dr Tahirul Qadri and invited him to take part in PTI’s rally that shall take place on September 3, reported Dunya News. Both leaders made direct contact after two years and agreed to make the anti-government movement reach a logical end. Qadri invited Khan to attend PAT’s rally in Rawalpindi after the latter invited the former to attend PTI’s Pakistan march on September 3. Both leaders accepted each other s invitation.Imran Khan and Dr Tahirul Qadri agreed upon mutual cooperation regarding the investigation of the Panama Leaks issue and that of the Model Town incident. Both leaders resumed direct contact with one another for the first time after their 2014 sit-ins but remained in contact informally. Awami Muslim League (AML) leader Sheikh Rasheed, PTI leader Chaudhry Sarwar and other personalities convinced Imran Khan to contact Dr Tahirul Qadri.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s latest announcement of nominating 22 parliamentarians as special envoys to highlight Indian atrocities and human rights abuses in Kashmir in the presence of already existing Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir has cast doubts on the intentions of the government. According to a statement issued by the prime minister, the nominated members would be sent in different parts of the world to fight the Kashmir cause so that he can ‘shake the collective conscience of the international community’ during his address at the UN this September. But, there is no justification of sending the parliamentarians abroad to raise the issue sans questioning the performance of the existing Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir. According to the National Assembly’s website, the mandate of the 22-member committee, led by Jamiat Ulema e Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and comprising members of almost all major political parties, are as followed: – To monitor violations of human rights and atrocities being committed by the Indian forces in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir. – To mobilize world opinion in support of the cause of right
of self determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir as well as the stand of Pakistan. – To solicit and provide political, moral and diplomatic support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just struggle for their right of self determination in accordance with the UN Resolutions. – To consider and decide such other issues and matters relating to above which may be referred to it by the House from time to time. According to a report published in a newspaper last month, the committee used up to Rs 175 million while conducting only three meetings, 21 press statements and several foreign trips in the last three years. The budget of the Kashmir committee is far higher than other parliamentary committees since it enjoys a special status. The prime minister’s announcement also drew criticism from the opposition, with the Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari accused the former of cronyism. The prime minister should have decided the fate of the committee before assigning its role to 22 parliamentarians in order to avoid doubts and bringing more transparency in his move.Source: Samma .com ISLAMABAD: AB Saudi Defence Minister Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud Sunday held meetings with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, and exchanged views with them on regional peace and especially the situation in Middle East. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today sought the help of separatist Hurriyat Conference in ending violent protests in the state, after a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. “Everyone wants the bloodshed to stop. But dialogue can only happen with those who want it. I appeal to the Hurriyat to help in getting peace back on the streets, to stop the killings,” Ms Mufti said. Addressing the protesters directly, Ms Mufti said, “I appeal to all the boys who are out on the street, to everyone. I may have got angry with you and you may be angry with me, but give me a chance”. According to sources, Ms Mufti presented a ‘three point plan’ to help deescalate tension in the Valley in a 45-minute meeting with the Prime Minister. An important plank of the plan, sources have told NDTV, is opening up a Track 2 dialogue with the hardline Hurriyat Confer-
ence. The BJP and the PDP have already started discussing names of potential interlocutors who are outside the government. “There will be talks with all stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir. There needs to be an institution for it,” Ms Mufti said after the meeting. Ms Mufti said the agenda of the alliance between her party PDP and the BJP has not been followed but she now has PM Modi’s assurance that will be pushed. In Srinagar, senior PDP leader Dr Mehboob Beg, also appealed to hardline Hurriyat leader, Syed Ahmed Shah Geelani to treat Ms Mufti as his own daughter. “Geelani sahab must think of Mehbooba Mufti as his daughter, who also happens to be the first Kashmiri Muslim woman to lead our state,” Mr Beg said today. Kashmir has been under curfew for the last 50 days since protest broke out over the killing of terrorist Burhan Wani on July 8. Around 70 people have died since and over 11,000 been injured in clashes. Speaking to NDTV, BJP’s Shrikant Sharma said, “Dialogue with all stakeholders is written in the agenda of alliance with PDP. But it can only happen when the 5 per cent who are instigating violence stop fanning hatred.” On Wednesday, during his visit to Srinagar, Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said that the Centre was open to talks with all stakeholders in Kashmir, but declined to answer when asked whether he included the Hurriyat as a stakeholder. An all-party delegation is expected to visit Kashmir in the first week of September. TEHRAN: Tehran has deployed a recently delivered Russian-made long-range missile system to central Iran to protect its Fordo nuclear facility, state television said Sunday. Protecting nuclear facilities is paramount “in all circumstances” General Farzad Esmaili, the commander of Iran´s air defences, told the IRIB channel. “Today, Iran´s sky is one of the most secure in the region,” he added. A video showed an S-300 carrier truck in Fordo, raising its missile launchers toward the sky, next to other counter-strike weaponry.
The images were aired hours after supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave a speech to air force commanders, including Esmaili, in which he stressed that Iranian military power was for defensive purposes only.“Continued opposition and hype on the S-300 or the Fordo site are examples of the viciousness of the enemy,” Khamenei said. “The S-300 system is a defence system not an assault one, but the Americans did their best for Iran not to get hold of it.” The Fordo site, built into a mountain near the city of Qom has stopped enriching uranium since the January implementation of a nuclear deal with world powers. Under the historic accord, Iran dismantled most of its estimated 19,000 centrifuges -- giant spinning machines that enrich uranium, keeping only 5,000 active for research purposes. Iran and the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia negotiated for more than two years before signing a historic July 2015 agreement that removed some international sanctions in return for curbs on Tehran´s controversial atomic programme. The United Nations has significantly revised the estimated death toll from Yemen’s 18-month civil war to up to 10,000 people - a huge increase on the previous estimate of more than 6,000. Speaking from the capital Sanaa on Tuesday, Jamie McGoldrick, the UN humanitarian coordinator, said the new figure was based on official information from medical facilities in Yemen. The number could rise further, McGoldrick said,
as some areas had no medical facilities, and people were often buried without any official record being made. “We know the numbers are much higher but we can’t tell you by how much,” McGoldrick told reporters. “The figures we have are probably incomplete because we take the numbers from functioning health services, and in some of these areas there are no functioning health services,” he added. “People get killed or die and are actually buried before they are recorded, and we don’t have a way of recording that.” Previous estimates cited by officials and aid groups for much of 2016 said the conflict had killed some 6,500 people, half of them civilians. Long-running negotiations have failed to end the conflict between government forces, backed by an Arab coalition, and Houthi rebels, who are supported by Iran. Yemen descended into chaos after the 2012 removal of long-time President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose forces are now fighting alongside Houthis. A Saudi-led Arab military coalition started air strikes against Houthis in support of the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in March
Housing affordability in Vancouver had its biggest drop in 26 years during the first half of the year, but signs of cooling are beginning to show up there, and in Toronto, according to a new report from Royal Bank. The bank said its home affordability measure — the percentage of median pre-tax household income necessary to service the mortgage, property taxes and utilities for all categories of homes — hit 90.3 per cent for Vancouver by the end of June after surging by 6.6 percentage points in the first quarter and 6.1 percentage points in the second quarter. The figure is even worse for a singledetached house, which now requires 126.8 per cent of median pre-tax income to carry. “Clearly, owning a single-detached property at current prices in Vancouver is a luxury that very few locals can afford,” the bank said. In Toronto, the overall cost-of-ownership measure hit 60.2 per cent of median pre-tax income at the end of June, mainly due to a run-up in single-detached home costs. RBC said the level of Toronto’s aggregate affordability measure was the highest since the third quarter of 1990. However, the bank’s chief economist says signs of cooling resale activity have emerged in Vancouver and, more tentatively, in Toronto. “We believe the blistering pace of property appreciation in both markets may slow by year-end,” said Craig Wright. “This likely won’t help affordability in the near-term because of demand-supply tightness in the two markets at the present time, but some relief could arrive late this year or early in 2017,” Wright said. While housing afford-
A Jewish fund belonging to an American casino tycoon, Sheldon Adelson, has denied it financed a poster campaign targeting pro-Palestine groups across US college campuses. Reports published earlier this week claimed that the “Stop the Jew Hatred on Campus” campaign, which labelled student activists as Palestinian “terrorists”, was funded by the Maccabee Task Force (MTF). The activists targeted told Al Jazeera that the campaign left them shocked, scared and feeling uneasy for weeks. At least one said he does not believe the MTF had no idea where its money would be used. Launched by billionaire Sheldon Adelson, the MTF provides grants to organisations which want to end the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. “We did not ask for, nor approve, the poster campaign that targeted student activists, and were not aware that our money had been used to support it. It should not have been,” the statement said. “We have not, and will not, support public attacks on student activists who behave in a civil fashion.” An MTF spokesman later told Al Jazeera that he had been “assured that the grant was not used for the campaign, but rather for speaking engagements and the production of a research report”. The MTF was created last year to “grow the pro-Israel movement” while combating BDS activities on campuses, the spokesman said. “We believe that the number one non-military threat to Israel and the Jewish people is the BDS movement,” he said. The poster campaign was launched across five college campuses in California in April, in an
ability in other major Canadian cities generally eroded modestly in the latest period, some cities, including Calgary, Saint John, and St. John’s saw some improvement. In a separate report, TD Bank is forecasting the Vancouver and Toronto market will follow different shortterm paths, with Vancouver expected to see a modest correction that would be driven, in part, by the introduction of the new tax on foreign buyers of property. Sales activity in Vancouver is expected to drop by 10 to 15 per cent over the next six months, TD said, and it projects prices will decline by about 10 per cent in the region by mid-2017, before stabilizing later in the year. Toronto, meanwhile, is forecast to see some continued home price gains. “Barring the levying of a similar tax, foreign investors could switch focus to the more affordable Toronto market,” TD said. effort to combat the activities of pro-Palestine student groups. The posters declared BDS a “Hamas-inspired genocidal campaign” that aims to “destroy Israel”, and listed the names of students and faculty members involved in pro-Palestine groups and activities, affiliating them with “Palestinian terrorists”, and accusing them of perpetrating “Jew Hatred”. One of the targeted groups was Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), which comprises students, faculty, and community members working on college campuses. Yacoub Kureh, a graduate involved in SJP at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), was among those named on the flyers. “When the posters with my name came up this year labelling me a ‘Jew-hater’, I felt nauseous,” he told Al Jazeera, adding that he was “shocked and scared”. Kureh, a teaching assistant, felt “uneasy for several weeks” and worried for his safety. “Some of the administration at UCLA were supportive,” he said. “But one high-ranking UCLA administrator told me that if I can’t handle it, I should consider stopping my pro-Palestinian activism.” Omar Zahzah, a UCLA PhD student and SJP member, was also named. “While this was not the first anti-SJP poster campaign that Horowitz’s organisation carried out, it definitely constituted an escalation in that individual students and faculty were named,” Zahzah said, who called the action a “form of incitement”. Zahzah has become “sadly used to being targeted and blacklisted, including on Canary Mission”, an online database that documents individuals and groups involved in pro-Palestine activities. “It will always be chilling, no matter how often you encounter it,” he said. In response to the MTF’s denial of having financed the posters, the activist said such claims were “laughable”. “It seems ridiculous for the MTF to give Horowitz a grant, and then feign surprise when his organisation does the same thing it has been doing for some time now,” Zahzah said. “People really ought to be shocked that Adelson and the MTF are putting millions of dollars into quashing grassroots student organising.” Source: Al-Jazeera
2015. Security deteriorated further after the Houthis swept into Sanaa in September 2014 and pushed south, forcing Hadi’s government to flee into exile. The conflict has displaced three million Yemenis and forced 200,000 people to seek refuge abroad, McGoldrick said. The UN had information that 900,000 of those displaced intended to try to return to their homes, he said. “This is a big challenge, especially in areas still experiencing conflict,” McGoldrick said. Some 14 million of Yemen’s 26 million population need food aid and seven million are suffering from food insecurity, he said. Source: Al-Jazeera

Hajj – The Journey of a Lifetime
“The warmth of the sun spreads across the desert. An excitement fills the air. A blanket of people, clothed mainly in white, covers the land. The Pilgrims answer the call for Hajj by a resounding voice of submission: O Allah, I obey Your Order. I obey You one time after the other. O Allah, I obey Your Order. You are the One Who does not have any partner. I obey You one time after the other. You are the One Who deserves to be praised and thanked, Every endowment is from You. You are the One attributed with Dominion. There is no partner with You. As the Hajj season has commenced, the truthful righteous believers started to feel in their hearts the blessings of this season. Some even started preparing themselves for this Holy journey to Makkah and Madinah, the city of the Best Prophet, Muhammad peace be upon him.Others who long for the Holy Cities of Makkah and Madinah but are unable to go remained struck with grief and sadness especially because they are unsure whether or not they would be able to perform Hajj in the upcoming years. Ibrahim Ibn Adham was among many who travelled on foot to perform Hajj. One day and while he was walking to Makkah, he
saw a man riding a camel. The man asked Ibrahim Ibn Adham: Where are you going? Ibrahim said: I am heading to Makkah to perform Hajj. Then the man said: but you need a ride to Makkah since it is extremely far.Ibrahim said: indeed I have many but you do not see them. The man said: “Where are they? Ibrahim explained: In times of hardship, patience is my ride, in times of prosperity, thankfulness to Allah is my ride, and in times of feeling tempted to commit a sin, I remember that death is coming very soon. Upon hearing this, the man astonishingly said: keep walking; I swear by Allah with the strong faith you have in your heart, you are in a better situation than me.There in Makkah, the hearts and the longing souls find their remedy and healing. People circumambulate the sacred House, the Holy Ka^bah, with ultimate submission to Allah as if saying: “O Lord, No matter how many times we circumambulate and turn, there is no refuge except with You.” There at the Holy Kabah, when you make contact with the black stone and kiss it, remember that the lips of the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him touched this blessed stone. UDHIYA (QURBANI)
What is Udhiya?
‘Udhiya’ is an Arabic word meaning “blood sacrifice”, and ‘Qurbani’ is an Urdu and Persian word derived from the Arabic word “Qurban” which literally means an act performed to seek Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. It is technically used for the sacrifice of an animal slaughtered for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. The sacrifice of an animal has always been a recognised form of worship in many religions, but in the ‘Shariah’ (Islamic sacred law) of The Last and Final Messenger of Allah Ta’ala
bah, you will be overcome by the magnificence of the Ka^bah, and recall once again that you are indeed a slave to the Lord of this Sacred House. And when you are performing saiy between Mount of As–Safa and Al-Marwah, remember the story of Lady Hajar and her dear son Prophet Isma^il when Prophet Ibrahim ^alayhis-salam left them both in Makkah which at the time was completely deserted and barren, and so Lady Hajar repeatedly asked him: “O Ibrahim, are we to be left alone in this valley with no water, food or companions?” And his intentions were only to fulfill what Allah subhanahu wa-ta^ala ordered him with, and then she said: “Did Allah order you to do this?” He replied, “Yes.” Upon hearing this, eloquently and with a complete reliance on Allah she said: “Then we will not be lost.” After that, by the will of Allah, fresh pure water sprung out from the ground in large quantities. This was given the name“Zam Zam” water. And while wearing the clothes of Ihram, people gather on the land of ^Arafat and make supplication to Allah subhanahu wata^ala. The Prophet peace be upon him said: Devils are most humiliated, belittled, disturbed and frustrated during the Day of ^Arafah, and this is due to the descent of

It is Al-Madinah that Ad-Dajjal (the oneeyed imposter) will not be able to enter because it is guarded by great angels. Also AlBukhariy narrated that the Prophet peace be upon him said: “O Allah, bless al-Madinah twice as much asMakkah”. S P E C I A L Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet said,
“Whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, he just slaughtered it for himself, and whoever slaughtered it after the prayer, he slaughtered it at the right time and followed the tradition of the Muslims.”
The Story of Hajj
The Story of Hajj starts with an introduction about Prophet Ibrahim or Abraham (pbuh)
A
B R A HAM
Abraham is a figure revered by Muslims, Jews, and Christians alike as a righteous person who lived over four thousand years ago. His story can be found in the Bible as well as the Qur’an (the Muslim holy book). Abraham is considered to be the patriach of monotheism, or “belief in the One God,” who sought a personal relationship with his Creator. He left his native city of Ur in Mesopotamia after voicing opposition to his people’s polytheistic practices, and eventually settled in Egypt with his family. Later, he escorted one of his wives, Hajar, and their infant son Ishmail, to a desolate valley in Arabia and left them there, trusting in God’s promise to care for them. Hajar, concerned about feeding her young baby, began searching the surroundings for food and water. According the the Qur’an, in response to Hajar’s prayers, a spring miraculously gushed forth at Ishma’il’s feet to
quench their thirst. Hajar climbed nearby hills searching for food and looking for caravans on the horizon. Eventually, some passing traders stopped in the valley, and asked Hajar’s permission to water their camels. In time, the traders decided to settle in the little valley, and eventually the settlement grew into the city of Makkah. Abraham returned from time to time to visit, and when Ishma’il was about thirteen years old, he and Ishma’il constructed the Katbah, an empty cube-shaped building, as a place dedicated for the worship of the One God. Eventually, Makkah became an important trading post by the time of Prophet Muhammad, twentyfive hundred years later.
THE HAJJ
In commemoration of the trials of Abraham and his family in Makkah, which included Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son in response to God’s command, Muslims make a pilgrimage to the sacred city at least once in their lifetime. The Hajj is one of the “five pillars” of Islam, and thus an essential part of Muslims’ faith and practice. Muslims from all over the world, including the Canada travel to Makkah (in modern- day Saudi Arabia). Before arriving in the holy city, Muslims enter a state of consecration (dedication) known as ihram, by removing their worldly dothes and donning the humble attire of pilgrimsÑtwo seamless white sheets for men, and simple white dresses and scarves for women. The white garments are symbolic of human equality and unity before God, since all the pilgrims are dressed similarly. Money and status no longer are a factor for the pilgrims - the equality of each person

in the eyes of God becomes paramount. Upon arriving in Makkah, pilgrims perform the initial tawaf, which is a circular, counterclockwise procession around the Ka’bah. All the while, they state “Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk,” which means “Here I am at your service, O God, Here I am!” The tawaf is meant to awaken each Muslim’s consciousness that God is the center of their reality and the source of all meaning in life, and that each person’s higher self-identity derives from being part of the community of Muslim believers, known as the ummah. Pilgrims also perform the sa’i, which is hurrying seven times between the small hills named Safa and Marwah, reenacting the Biblical and Qurtanic story of Hajar’s desperate search for lifegiving water and food. Next, on the first official day of Hajj (8th of Dhul-Hijjah), the two million pilgrims travel a few miles to the plain of Mina and camp there. From Mina, pilgrims travel the following morning to the plain of Arafat where they spend the entire day in earnest supplication and devotion. That evening, the pilgrims move and camp at Muzdalifa, which is a site between Mina and Arafat. Muslims stay overnight and offer various prayers there. Then the pilgrims return to Mina on the 10th, and throw seven pebbles at a stone pillar that represents the devil. This symbolizes Abraham’s throwing stones at Satan when he tried to dissuade Abraham from sacrificing his son. Then the pilgrims sacrifice a sheep,
reenacting the story of Abraham, who, in place of his son, sacrificed a sheep that God had provided as a substitute. The meat from the slaughtered sheep is distributed for consumption to family, friends, and poor and needy people in the community. After the sacrifice, the pilgrims return to Makkah to end the formal rites of Hajj by performing a final tawaf and sa’i. Muslims believe the rites of the Hajj were designed by God and taught through prophet Muhammad. Muslims believe that since the time of Adam, there have been thousands of prophets, including such well-known figures as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and David, and that Muhammad was the final prophet of God. The Hajj is designed to develop God consciousness and a sense of spiritual upliftment. It is also believed to be an opportunity to seek forgiveness of sins accumulated thoughout life. Prophet Muhammad had said that a person who performs Hajj properly “will return as a newly born baby [free of all sins].” The pilgrimage also enables Muslims from all around the world, of different colors, languages, races, and ethnicities, to come together in a spirit of universal brotherhood and sisterhood to worship the One God together. CIBC Pakistan Festival (2016) Made History!!
O
n August 14, over ten thousand people came together to celebrate 70th Pakistan’s independence at British Columbia’s fifth Pakistan Festival. The overwhelming successful event was held at Jack Poole Plaza in downtown Vancouver. The huge turnout of the Pakistani community and others at Canada Place and fluttering of Pakistan’s flag side by side with that of Canada with serene Burrard Inlet and gorgeous North Shore Mountains in the background, was a proud moment and a thrilling experience. The exotic location has immensely added to the exquisiteness of the event. The event provided a window into Pakistan’s arts and crafts, cuisine, fashion and music. Since the first Pakistani Festival, the tradition was continued this year by individuals representing Pakistan-Canada Association, Pakistani Youth Council and Pakistani Canadian Women’s Society, along with Pakistani businesses and the Pakistani community at large with the great contribution and supervision of Consulate General of Pakistan in Vancouver. Gold sponsors were tPak National Foods, Diamond Carpets, Maharaja Banquet Hall. Silver sponsors included Naz’s Pharmacy, Pizza 73, Pakistan Canada Association from Edmonton and many bronze and Media sponsors played their role well in success of the festival. Once again, the goal was to strengthen the community and to share their unique culture and heritage with their fellow Canadians. Members of local business community, both Pakistani and non-Pakistani, extended their helping hands by giving money and time to the festival. The presence of vendors from other communities and federal political parties at this year’s festival was also a good sign, showing the increased popularity of the event across communities. Planning for this event began many months prior to the event. Allhumdullillah the motivation and enthusiasm of all hard working volunteers and management committee paid off.
The event was conducted beautifully by Ms. Ayesha Qureshi. Local talents Mr. Ashar Qazi, Mr. Lawrence at guitar and Mini drums, Mr. Asani at Sitar entertained the audience. The official celebration started around 3:00 pm with a colourful Parade and a procession of special guests and dignitaries led by young kids dressed in cultural dresses holding Pakistani flags and women carrying a big Pakistani Flag throughout the plaza and to the stage. The program started with Talawat e Quran, and Dua by Maulana Naumani and then a welcome address given by the organizing committee, including Mr. Haroon Khan, Dr. Babra Rana, Mr. Hamza Malik, Mr. Waseem Javed and Dr. Tariq. Many speeches were delivered from honourable dignitaries, including Senator Salma Ataullahjan, Federal and Provincial Ministers, councillors, and representative from CIBC, the main event sponsor. Next segment was a collection of beautiful and colourful presentations by children on national songs presenting Provincial dresses and dances. This was followed by a fascinating cultural fashion show. On the musical entertainment side, Ms. Wania Jibran from Alberta, and Mr Asad Khan (from Pakistan) riled up the crowd with Pakistani pop and classical songs, and at the end, the event headliner Pakistani singer Mr. Jawad Ahmad took the event to a stratospheric level as he sang familiar tunes. At the plaza many tents surrounded the field along with a massive stage and sound system set up for the variety of entertainment. Food vendors from the community brought the event to life with the aroma and flavour of traditional Pakistani cuisine. A Special thanks goes to the City of Vancouver, sponsors and dedicated team of volunteers. Overall it was a wonderful Festival in Vancouver history This festival has been a major step for the Pakistani community under the leadership of entire Pakistani Consulate General Team, who continues to make bridges between local Pakistani Associations and many other individuals.
The Miracle Media congratulates all 2016 Pakistan Festival committee members and highly appreciates their day and night efforts of many weeks at a such a beautiful new venue in Vancouver Downtown. With all said and done, we hope that in future differences with other Pakistani Association can be resolved ahead of time so this event, which is meant to showcase unity, can do so in an even better manner. Also, we hope all attendees respect their surroundings next time and maintain the cleanliness at these public venues.

Promoting Literacy in Pakistan: A Twenty Year Retirement Activity Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, Professor Emeritus, Mechanical Engineering, UBC Founder and President, Maria-Helena Foundation (www.mariahelenafoundation.org)
Yes We Care!
Date: Thursday, September 22, 2016 Time: 12:30 PM Room: MCLD 418 Macleod Building; 2356 Main Mall, UBC http://goo.gl/maps/1esJ4GarD6H2 Pakistan, population almost 200 million, is a very conservative and patriarchal country, mired in many external and internal conflicts. It lags behind its major neighbors in many developmental indices. The adult literacy rate is only 55%. More than 24 million children are out of school, the majority of them are girls. In this talk Dr. Iqbal will describe how, after his retirement in 1996, he wanted to promote literacy in Pakistan, especially for poor children. With the support of his family, he founded a registered charity: The Maria-Helena Foundation (MHF). There are four types of organizations providing primary education in Pakistan: a) Governments; b) Private for-profit organizations; c) Private not-forprofit Civil Society Organizations (CSOs); and d) Madrassas run by religious groups that provide mainly Qur’anic (religious) education. b) Many Government schools are dysfunctional and their infrastructure is crumbling. Also, many teachers are political appointees who are sometimes absent from schools, resulting in minimal teaching and poor student performance. While the private for-profit schools do better than the Government schools, their fees are too high for low income families. The Maria-Helena Foundation, in partnership with Pakistani CSOs, has helped establish 20 non-profit permanent small primary schools with a total student population of about 4,000. These schools are run on a combination of tuition fees and donations collected locally. The Foundation is also supporting 15 one-room one-teacher schools located in rented rooms. In these schools teachers’ salaries are paid by the Foundation, and textbooks and notebooks are provided free. About 450 students are benefit ting from this free education. The Foundation also offers several merit scholarships, and fee-concessions to poor students.

14 Y O U T H Summer School for Syrian Refugee Children - Bridging Gaps Dhul Hajah 1. 1437 September 2, 2016
By Fatima ince the beginning of 2016, the Lower Mainland has become home to over 1500 Syrian refugees, most of them families. The Muslim Food Bank and Community Services (MFBCS) ASPIRE Program has been supporting the specific sociocultural needs of the refugee group at multiple levels. Along with providing food and clothing, the Refugee Support Program was devel-
S
oped to focus on the unique challenges these refugees face during the settlement process, offering cultural orientation, interpretation services, English classes, and more. A volunteer-run, non-profit organization, MFBCS has sought to provide a sense of community to newcomers and facilitate integration into Canadian society. This year, with the sudden influx of families and their children waiting to enrol
for the new school year, MFBCS realized that some children may need tutoring in order to keep pace with their academic level. Limited summer school programs are already in place through various neighbourhoods, however many families were unable to access these programs due to difficulties understanding and navigating the schooling system in BC. Partnering with the Immigrant Services
Society of BC, local mosques and independent schools, MFBCS started a summer school and tutoring program focusing on English, Math and Canadian Culture. Funding for this initiative was generously provided by the Canadian Red Cross as part of their contribution towards welcoming Syrian refugees. This program ran from June to August, providing support to over 90 children aged between 8 to 12 years old. In order to increase attendance, four locations across Surrey and Langley were chosen for ease of access by refugee families and staffed by volunteer teachers and assistants with diverse backgrounds. Last week, for the last session, children were taken on a field trip and spent a fun-filled afternoon bowling and nurturing a pizza addiction. The response to this program has been overwhelmingly positive, with teachers remarking they “thoroughly enjoyed the interaction” and were “thrilled to see the level of motivation from the kids” . End of program assessments indicate that, come September, students should be better prepared to keep pace with their Canadian counterparts in provincial schools. Freedom is taught for in case of motion in different thing, but it should be earned with due respect in life. If one is a child of age 10, one cannot ask for a freedom of an 18 year old and vice versa. Shouting from the roof for freedom is not a wise thing for children. Freedom is not the disguise for whatever fancies a person. There is always thug-ofwar for getting freedom for certain things, on the part of children. It is a common scenario in most of the houses that children are expecting yes, okay signal for dressing, partying, hours of outings trips with friends. Obviously parents have different choices views. Diversity The parents have kept their cultural views, ways and habits still with them. Whereas, children have either not seen or experienced it enough to put it into practise. When we immigrate and live in other country with lots of diversity, or we live in our own culture but with different social set up it becomes very difficult on the parts of parents. They want to keep their old cultural values and views but they are not easy to put into practise. Life styles in different children are studying, working, or friends with children of other cultures communities. Conflict of Cultural Values The parents are in dilemma as to how much should they allow their family to do whatever they want. For choice of friends, going out, hours of staying out at night parties, dressing style etc.
In fact they themselves find it hard to adjust to new surroundings, new ways of modern life or facts of prevailing life style. For example, before parents would not allow their daughters to go even far for university nowadays girls are living alone in city far from their hometown even in other country to study or to work. Freedom/Responsibility The shadow of freedom is called taking, and accepting responsibility for consequences of your action. Freedom of speech does not mean to utter any words one wants to. It actually means when one speaks something he or she has the details and knowledge of situation for which they are speaking, and they are ready to accept the after effects of it. Before enjoying any of our nights and freedom we should understand the duties associated with it. Respect/Love When we respect others equally then we can respect our own self in true sense. It is very much necessary for the world to function in harmony for everybody to love and respect the feelings and situations of others as they do for their own.

W hy have the bans been imposed?
to strict modesty edicts The French bans have referred to religious clothing and as they were loosely phrased, came to be understood to include full-length clothing and head coverings worn on the beach - not just burkini swimsuit
After a militant Islamist ploughed a lorry into families on the seafront at Nice on 14 July, killing 86 people, the city’s authorities said a ban was “a necessity”.Local leaders have described their actions as appropriate and proportionate. But the bans are not just a response to a spate
of deadly jihadist attacks on French soil. France has long-standing laws on secularism, and the Nice ban focused on “correct dress, respectful of accepted customs and secularism, as well as rules of hygiene and of safety in public bathing areas”.
Top French court suspends burkini ban
France’s highest administrative court has suspended a ban on full-body “burkini” swimsuits that was imposed in a town on the Mediterranean coast. The ban in Villeneuve-Loubet “seriously and clearly illegally breached fundamental freedoms”, it found. The ruling could set a precedent for up to 30 other towns that imposed bans on their beaches, chiefly on the Riviera. At least three mayors have already said they will keep the bans
in their towns. The court will make a final decision later on the bans’ legality. Correspondents in France say the court’s decision means that all the bans on burkinis are likely now to be overturned, But town hall authorities in Nice and Frejus, as well as in the Corsican village of Sisco, have vowed to keep the bans in place. Nice saw a devastating attack by a follower of so-called Islamic State in July while Sisco witnessed clashes this month between villagers and Muslim bathers. Police images fuel burkini debate Arab social media alarmed Burkini beach row puts French values to the tes t Cannes burkini ban: What do Muslim women think? French Muslims fear state aims to control their faith A human rights group, the Human Rights League (LDH), and an anti-Islamophobia association (CCIF), brought the ban in Villeneuve-Loubet to the court’s attention. M
ajor Zafar was the most senior bachelor officer in Cherat acting as Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General, in short called the DQ. His room closer to mine provided often opportunity of candid discussions on various matters of common interest. One night, while sitting in his room we ended in a heated discussion. I never meant to insult the commandos Special Services Group (SSG) as an institution, but he considered some of my words as derogatory remarks for the SSG. It created a rift between us. Major Zafar felt insulted and told Major Shaukat Kamal who was a much more passionate officer of the SSG. Being emotional and sensitive to the pride of SSG, Kamal was offended to hear the words coming from a ‘Sissy-,’ a name given to the Air Force officers by the army Commandos. One late night, Major Kamal, with two other officers Captain Amir and Captain Arshad came to my room seeking an explanation for my derogatory remarks about the SSG. I tried to explain, I never meant to talk badly about the SSG as a formation. Major Kamal recounted the rich history of the SSG, a formation dearer than life to him. In the heat of discussion, he grabbed me by the collar and threatened grave consequences. Flight Lieutenant Khursheed Mirza from the adjoining area, after listening to the noise came into my room. On his intervention, all three left angrily. Major Shaukat Kamal was about six feet tall with the solid built of a Commando. Frankly speaking, fear overtook my courage in the presence of the three army commandos. Panic stopped me from reaction when he grabbed my collar. I always thought to be a
brave man, b but that b h night i h I chickened hi k d out – I admit. If reported to higher authorities then the three of them were punishable for trespassing and assaulting. I was an emotional Flying Officer, not interested in getting them punished by the military. I wanted to get even with the Commandos’ mentality of considering ‘Sissy’ to the Air Force Officers. Major Kamal was the only one who used harsh language and grabbed me by the collar. The other two officers remained silent throughout the conflict. I couldn’t react because of the terror I felt of the three Commandos. Insult of not reacting haunted me. It became a matter of pride of the Air Force. I did not sleep that night and kept thinking.
Kamal Kama Ka mall was was about abou ab outt six six feet feet tall ttal alll and and had had the the strong build of a commando. He was stronger and taller than my five feet seven inches. I thought of my boxing abilities, the words of my boxing coach, Chief Tech Yaqub echoed in my mind. ‘Always stay closer while fighting a tall person to neutralize the full force of his punch.’ I had once knocked out a taller opponent following the same rule. I gathered my confidence. Like Shakespeare’s tragic hero, I decided to challenge Major Kamal to a duel to restore the pride of my organization.

The next day when Major Kamal walked up the road after the morning parade, I stopped him and politely invited him to my room. He looked tired and sweaty after the parade. Signs of worry from last night’s action were also clear on his face. He silently followed me. I locked the door as soon as he sat on the chair inside my room. He looked nervous but overcame smil sm ilee I ofof his nervousness with a friendly smile. fered two choices in response to his behavior from the previous night. First, a duel following the boxing rules until one of us bled or asked to stop the fight. Second, I would report the matter to the Air Force authorities. He was aware of the consequences if reH po ported; a joint investigation by the Army and the Air Force leading to a court-martial. My th pr proposal brought some relief to his face. He ch chose the first option and asked for a few da days before the fight. I unlocked the door an and he left with the promise to respond soon. We continued with our normal routine. After W a few days, while watching TV in the anteroom, he asked me if I still wanted to fight. ro I rresponded, ‘Sooner the better.’ He appeared ready and walked to my room. H I llocked the door; moved the bed to a corner to create space for fighting, and reminded him of the boxing rules, as we took off our hi w wristwatches and placed them on the table. We stood against each other with our bare W fists clenched tightly in boxing style. I fought close to his body, when I suddenly

He sighed loudly in pain. I saw his skin popping up and turning blue. I was even. I immediately called off the fight. It didn’t last more than a few minutes. We shook hands and hugged each other. A strange bond of respect between us was formed that night. Major Kamal in appreciation said, “I wish you were in SSG with us.” I once again managed changing the Sissy impression, but this time it happened in restoring the Air Force pride as a fighting arm- No Sissy. Next day, when I met Major Kamal in the mess, I noticed the blue mark under his left eye. My swollen lip was obvious. We smiled, carefully viewing each other’s faces. Major Shaukat Kamal later retired as a Brigadier. The founding Editor of ‘The Miracle’ is writing his life experiences in the Pakistan Air Force, Bahrain Amiri Air Force and his time in Canada. We will be publishing excerpt from his book in the upcoming editions of ‘The Miracle.’ The readers are requested to frankly comment on the article. --The Managing Editor.

MQ M decides to amend constitution to remove Altaf Hussain
F
arooq Sattar-led MQM Pakistan will soon amend the party’s constitution to formally and legally disassociate itself from its founder — Altaf Hussain — and make the post-22 August Muttahida a democratic organisation with no veto power given to any office bearer or leader.MQM sources said that Farooq Sattar, Khawaja Izhar and some other senior leaders of the MQM are presently in consultation with the top legal
minds of the party to precisely assess what amendments are required to give it a new look with no shadow of Altaf Hussain and his fashion of politics. Interestingly, most of the MQM leaders are unsure of what is precisely written in the present MQM constitution which, it is discussed, gives dictatorial powers to Altaf Hussain with regard to organisational matters of Muttahida.A senior leader of the MQM told The News that in case there is any veto power given in the constitution to any leader or party office bearer, it will be simply deleted. It is also said that in case the constitution contains the name of Altaf Hussain or makes any reference to the “founder” of the party, these will also be removed. A senior official of the Election Commission of Pakistan, when contacted, told this correspondent that the MQM’s constitution as submitted before the Commission, does not include the name of Altaf Hussain. “Only
the MQM’s letterhead, which was amongst the documents submitted with the ECP for registration of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan, contains Altaf Hussain’s name as party’s founder,” the ECP source said. “The MQM Pakistan’s constitution does not include Altaf Hussain’s name,” the commission source categorically said, adding that Farooq Sattar is the MQM party leader as per the ECP’s official record.According to a senior MQM leader, who claimed to have last read the party constitution in 2013, the document neither has any reference of Altaf Hussain nor gives any veto power to the party’s founder.Following Altaf Hussain’s recent tirade against Pakistan, the Farooq Sattar-led MQM is making all efforts to materialise a complete disconnect with Altaf, who was once followed blindly but has now become a symbol of hatred even for the MQM. The MQM’s local leadership has the realisation that after August 22nd episode, Muttahida
even as a political entity can’t survive by maintaining a connection with Altaf. Decision to get rid of Altaf was taken earlier but it was not clearly announced in the press conference, addressed by Farooq Sattar, as some of the MQM leaders feared that there might be a reaction from the MQM workers. However, there has been no reaction and not even a single MQM worker has raised his voice in favour of Altaf. This situation has encouraged Farooq Sattar to announce a complete disconnect between the MQM Pakistan and Altaf and his London Secretariat.-Source:The News

Pakistan cricket legends want Sarfraz as new ODI captain
F
ormer Pakistan captain and legendary batsman Javed Miandad believes that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should admit its mistake of appointing right-hand batsman Azhar Ali as the captain of the flailing ODI side. “It is time for the PCB to admit they made a mistake in appointing Azhar as the ODI captain and appoint someone else for the series against the West Indies next month,” Miandad said Wednesday. “It made no sense to appoint Azhar last year when he was not in the ODI team since 2013,” he added. Alex Hales’s stunning 171 provided the platform for England to post the highest ever one-day international total of 444 for three as they beat Pakistan by 169 runs at Trent Bridge on Tuesday night. Victory in this day/night clash gave England an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series after Pakistan were dismissed for 275 with 44 balls to spare. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram believes that wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed is the obvious choice to replace Azhar as the ODI captain. While talking to
a local news channel, Wasim said it is the right time to hand over the captaincy to the 29-year-old. “I think it is the right time to give responsibility to Sarfraz and make him ODI captain. He is a performer under pressure and he can bring about a change.” Another former captain and famous commentator Ramiz Raja is of the view that he is concerned about Azhar, who he believes can suffer at the Test level after coming under enormous pressure following three back to back defeats against England in the ongoing series. “I am just concerned that eventually all this pressure and criticism might affect his Test cricket performances.” Pakistan former Test opener and head coach Mohsin Khan said that he believes it’s a big test for new coach Mickey Arthur to turn the team’s fortune in the limited overs cricket. “Where are we going in this format?” asked Mohsin. “I believe it is going to be a big challenge now for coach Mickey Arthur to replicate his success of the Test matches into limited over cricket.
