PROFILE Miranda graduates from her Masters at the University of Edinburgh in July 2022. She went to the University of Cambridge 2014-2017, after which she spent three years working as an architectural designer with De Rosee Sa Architects. Her experience with DRS spanned all RIBA stages of work, and she was frequently given the opportunity to assume higher level responsibilities in the practice. As an avid illustrator, Miranda has strong skill in architectural visualisation combining traditional media with Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop and AutoDesk/Rhino/Vectorworks. Her experience in industry has enabled her to adapt to new workflows and software quickly, a learning process which she enjoys. She has learned a passion for detail-oriented design, and would like the opportunity to experience larger scale projects and a sustainability-led design approach. Miranda is a bilingual, Spanish/Australian national with settled status in the U.K. No visa sponsorship is required and proof of settled status can be given upon request.

All of the issues presented by Mexico City’s current unsustainable relationship with water reach a nexus in the North-East corner of the city. On the site of the old Lake Texcoco basin, exists a seemingly ‘left-over’ area of 14,000 hectares – a very large non-urban ‘island’. The intention of this project was to re-establish a sustainable cyclical relationship, through architecture and programme, between the Lake Texcoco site and Mexico City. Due to the incomprehensible scale of the site and the complexity of the programme, a small ‘sample’ area of the site was developed with a portion of the programme. ‘The Wetland Centre’, which would serve the dual purpose of managing the wetlands and the algae lots gives an interesting opportunity to create an architectural response to the New Lake Texcoco. This architecture will come in the form of a series of buildings and structures which will span existing urban barriers. The purpose is not only to bring people to water, but to carry water to people; in the form of education, spirulina production and wetland management.

The key part of the project, the main cistern marks the intersection between different users of the programme. This space not only serves as a water reservoir, but as a public swimming space. The reed bed in the centre of the pool acts as a natural filter. The rammed earth and concrete construction echo the infamous Mexican cenotes. With the most intense collection of programmes in the project, the canal section of the building has the greatest variety of build-ups to provide appropriate comfort for each activity. The section above, cuts across the basketball court. Its detailing needed a great deal of attention in order to ensure that the noise from playing doesn’t travel down into the commercial spaces below.

The processing wing has been designed with porosity in mind – from the ground that the workers will stand on, which will allow run-off water to return to the ground, to the open internal spaces. The idea behind this building is predominantly to provide shade and shelter, but to feel like an external space from which you can take in the beautiful views to the wetland. Women from the neighbourhood adjacent to the project are the key occupant of the building; the spirulina production offers a potential source of income. As a result of this, the spaces and inbuilt furniture, such as the spirulina drying tables, are designed with the average Mexican woman’s body in mind.

Stretching across the project are the walkways and ramps, often found crossing the aqueduct, wrapped in red perforated steel sheets. These are designed to be light-weight in construction to contrast with the heavier concrete and rammed earth materials. The roof edges are detailed with a drip, to control the way that rainwater runs off of the trim.

The Forth & Clyde Canal signalled and sluiced the mineral resource wealth that lay under the hills of Scotland’s central belt. The canal remains a register of the environmental legacy of an industrial extractive age: the Anthropocene of ferrous pollution in waterways from long-abandoned mines to poor soil and air quality, meteorological unpredictability. Three Actuarists’ houses were proposed: imagined as sampling stations dotted along the Canal’s territories, serving as architectural tools to measure, and collect samples and divinings of elemental factors. Using Bruno Latour’s Gaïa Global Circus as a framework, our architectures notice and exaggerate discordances between the realities of global climate change and its public perception. Latour positions the artistic desire to narrate world events through performance, coinciding with the scientific interest in measured evaluation of environmental disasters. The Anthropocene Survey is sited on a land remnant between Canal and Clyde estuary at Old Kilpatrick encompassing both scientific and intuitive means. Empirical survey methods of the “-ologists” (scientists) overlap with the mirrored (musical) work of the “-mancers’” divination in a public Forum, an operatic synthesis of distinctive acoustics, the sequencing of spaces and scripted organisation that inform the Survey Institute as a “redefined assemblage of values”.

The Forth & Clyde canal is used to transport water samples from sampling stations to the Gaïa Anthropocene Survey for analysis. The sample vessels flow into the new canal which we have carved into the Old Killpatrick site to serve the institution, and aid in the delivery of these samples. The hydrologists’ aim is to examine the polluting legacy of the mining industry within bodies of water across the central belt of Scotland, and to endeavour to communicate their findings within the open Forum, creating an accessible public interface. Within the framework of Latour’s Global Gaïa Circus, the hydromancers serve to re-frame the scientific findings in a way that will engage the public to connect with the “energy of collective aesthetic experience”. Historically, hydromancers were the sages of their community; they would interpret the movement, colour and reflections of water using a variety of tools at their disposal. The hydromancers of the Anthropocene Survey continue this tradition, by pouring the water samples into a divining bowl and interpreting its consistency, colour, and movement. Culturally, divining itself was often a performance, something that is present in the architecture of the divination rooms which are all public-facing towards the Stasimo Secondo and the Forum.

The new canal carved out of the site allows water to flow from the Forth & Clyde canal down and through the buildings of the Anthropocene Survey. The movement of the water is reflected by the movement of the public through the site, who are guided towards the Forum and down to the Stasimo Secondo.

The water management of the project also mirrors this movement, piping grey water to the primary water treatment works which are located directly underneath the Forum amphitheatre. In this way, when visitors travel down to the Stasimo, they are confronted with the consequences of water use. The clean water is then passed through into the wetlands, which serve as a natural, sustainable passive water treatment. The acoustic design of the Stasimo façade amplifies the hydrolophones. When “-mancers” play, the acoustics resonate within the Stasimo transforming it into a tangible space that behaves like an auditorium. Visitors, having encountered the scientific exhibition in the Forum, and the water treatment works, are met with the undeniable, urgent cacophony of the hydromancer’s song.

£1.3M 225sqm This project was a full-refurbishment of an existing Georgian terraced house near Sloane Square, London. I have worked on this project from conception, to completion - through all RIBA Stages of Work. Additionally, as a result of staff changes, I took on the responsibility of producing tender documents. This extended into the construction stages of the project, I would often take on site meetings, resolving site issues raised by the site foreman and coordinating resolutions with the rest of the design team and client.

4.2 Hectares, 880sqm (gross internal area all buildings) I began working with Claire Sa, the director of the practice, to design and develop this project base in Almoçageme, Portugal. It is an old 4.2 hectare plot of farmland with a series of dilapidated farmhouses. The intention for this ambitious project is to create a “Farmstay” holiday destination, and to work in combination with a local winery to use the farmland once again as vineyards. The project required us to navigate the Portuguese planning and heritage system, as the buildings are listed. And to translate hand-drawings from the planning archives into CAD. This project is still, therefore, in it’s early stages and is undergoing archaeological site studies. Completion date was programmed to be in 2023, though the pandemic has postponed this date.

Colville Mews was another renovation project with change of use to convert an already altered mews house in London into a series of small, high quality, office spaces for rent and for the client’s own tech start-up. I was mostly involved in the planning and some of the construction later on. This project was challenging due to strict planning, and how small the floor areas were for the client brief. Additionally, we had to find ways to run and conceal the air conditioning system that serviced the first and second floor.

This third-year project consisted of developing a regeneration masterplan for Woolwich, London. As a team of 14 students, we worked together to develop the overall string of sites, researching and identifying key concepts. We then split into smaller groups to tackle the ‘urban blocks’, before beginning our individual building projects. The key intentions for the masterplan were to create a threshold space between the gentrified Royal Arsenal by the river, and the original Woolwich town, whilst still providing density. We hoped to achieve this by creating a meandering route across the whole masterplan as an alternative to the High Street that runs parallel to the sites. As a continuation of our third-year project, we individually developed buildings within the masterplan: Jigsaw Terrace is situated on the southern edge of Spray Street Quarter. The last block in the scope of the Woolwich masterplan Jigsaw Terrace is about female empowerment; run by women, for women.

The project’s co-housing units provide much needed accommodation for women who have suffered from domestic abuse and their children. These residential units work alongside an integrated Her Centre and carpentry workshops run by Women on the Tools, each providing advice and support as well as work and retraining opportunities respectively. The iconic planted terraces create comfortable, sunlit spaces to enjoy, whilst maintaining the necessary privacy, a motif that runs throughout the building. The client and key user for my project was chosen due to the dire need in the UK for accommodation for women survivors of domestic abuse. There would be a working and spatial relationship between the Her Centre charity and the workshop, to run carpentry workshops and empower the women survivors. The commercial/workshop aspect to the project would be run by the women’s charity, Women On The Tools. The carpentry workshop and ancillary DIY shop will have an advantageous relationship with the other art and manufacturing programmes on Spray Street Quarter.

Our second year brief was to design a new theatre building in Peckham. Following site analysis I identified a car park by Rye Lane which was used as a pedestrian thoroughfare into the residential area of town. Taking inspiration from Lina Bo Bardi’s Teat(r)o Oficina, I turned an under-used and barren car park in into an activated street that easily integrates into the Peckham neighbourhood by allowing space for public events.

Two theatre stages either side of a central foyer. These three spaces have been designed to flow into each other and the street

The theatre complex was designed for the company Cardboard Citizens. As a result of their interactive and fluid type of performances, the design should allow flexible use of the main spaces and boundaries that are both permeable and theatrical. The complex includes all the appropriate amenities to allow a theatre to run smoothly; offices, rehearsal rooms, and workshops, as well as providing public amenities such as seating, cafés and parks.

External walkway on the first floor giving an alternative point of view of any street performances and allowing people to bypass performances should they chose to.
