The town of Woolwich is located in East London, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Historically, the town developed around the Royal Arsenal, a military and naval station which manufactured shipping rope and a range of ammunition, which was established by Henry VIII. The town mainly consisted of the dockyard workers, and grew to be an affluent area of London.

This third-year project consisted of developing a regeneration masterplan for Woolwich, London. As a team of 14 students, we worked together to develop the overall string of sites, researching and identifying key concepts. We then split into smaller groups to tackle the ‘urban blocks’, before beginning our individual building projects. The key intentions for the masterplan were to create a threshold space between the gentrified Royal Arsenal by the river, and the original Woolwich town, whilst still providing density. We hoped to achieve this by creating a meandering route across the whole masterplan as an alternative to the High Street that runs parallel to the the sites. 3 | MIRANDA LYLE PÉREZ PORTFOLIO

KEY BUILDING STUDY Woolwich Covered Market

A string of sites from the Woolwich riverside to the Spray Street Quarter. These sites delineate the threshold between the original low-rise, low-income town and the new high-rise, luxury developments in the old Royal Arsenal. Can a masterplan integrate both communities? Our group’s area of focus was the Spray Street Quarter. Currently already marked for redevelopment, the area and the businesses within it have been falling into severe disrepair for a long time. 4 | MIRANDA LYLE PÉREZ PORTFOLIO

The seemingly unassuming covered market is actually of cultural and architectural interest. The market is spanned by a steel lamella roof structure from 1936, which was an engineering feat at the time. The construction method having been imported from Germany, it was also the first roof of its kind to be built in the London County Council area. Unfortunately, the current development plans to demolish the market and replace it with a mixed-use building. In our masterplan we have decided to keep it, as it is the only covered market in Woolwich- something which the public interviewed all thought Woolwich needed to keep.

PROPOSED

The existing Spray Street Quarter is in a fragmented, derelict condition. Our proposal was to unify the quarter, increase the density and use the covered market to create a route through to a courtyard with the existing mature trees. A variety of mixed-use residential typologies was allocated to the buildings to increase the vibrancy of the quarter.

Spray Street Quarter Approach 0 1 | YR 3 | 2 0 1 7

As a continuation of our third-year project, we individually developed buildings within the masterplan. Jigsaw Terrace is about female empowerment; run by women, for women. The project’s co-housing units provide much needed accommodation for women who have suffered from domestic abuse and their children. These residential units work alongside an integrated Her Centre and carpentry workshops run by Women on the Tools, each providing advice and support as well as work and retraining opportunities respectively. The iconic planted terraces create comfortable, sunlit spaces to enjoy, whilst maintaining the necessary privacy, a motif that runs throughout the building.

2 women are killed every week in England and Wales by a current or former partner (Office of National Statistics, 2015)

The UK has 348 women’s shelters... ...this is how many the UK should have the minimum standard of provision [of shelter] should be one family place per 10,000 head of population (WAVE Report, 2015)

1 in 4 women in England and Wales will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes (Crime Survey of England and Wales, 2013/14)

the UK reported to having to turn away almost as many women as they accomodated [due to the lack of available space] (WAVE Report, 2015) 20% of children in the UK have been exposed to domestic abuse (Radford et al. NSPCC, 2011)

The client and key user for my project was chosen due to the dire need in the UK for accommodation for women survivors of domestic abuse. There would be a working and spatial relationship between the Her Centre charity and the workshop, to run carpentry workshops and empower the women survivors. The commercial/workshop aspect to the project would be run by the women’s charity, Women On The Tools. The carpentry workshop and anciliary DIY shop will have an advantageous relationship with the other art and manufacturing programmes on Spray Street Quarter.

TEAT(R)O OFICINA , Lina Bo Bardi Sectional model, 1:100

Our second year brief was to design a new theatre building in Peckham. Following site analysis I identified a car park by Rye Lane which was used as a pedestrian thoroughfare into the residential area of town. Taking inspiration from Lina Bo Bardi’s Teat(r)o Oficina, I turned an under-used and barren car park in into an activated street that easily integrates into the Peckam neighbourhood by allowing space for public events.

RYE LANE, Peckham

18 |MIRANDA LYLE PÉREZ PORTFOLIO

The brief became to create a new cultural hot-spot for the residents of Peckham by designing a theatre complex for the company Cardboard Citizens. As a result of their interatctive and fluid type of performances, the design should allow flexible use of the main spaces and boundaries that are both permeable and theatrical. The complex should also include all the appropriate amenities to allow a theatre to run smoothly; offices, rehersal rooms, and workhops.

Box office and coffee shop for the local community and theatre audiences. Creates futher employment opportunity for Cardboard Citizen’s homeless network. Informal amphitheatre for buskers, lunch eaters and actors .

The design is divided into two halves; one being the performance and the other being the amenity spaces required for the theatre company to work; offices, workshop, rehersal spaces and a coffee shop that doubles up as a box office for tickets. 19 |MIRANDA LYLE PÉREZ PORTFOLIO

Since graduating in 2017, I started work at De Rosee Sa Architects a London-based firm specialising in high-end residential properties with some commercial & community projects. I have had the opportunity to experience all RIBA design and construction states, from concept proposals to construction snagging and hand-over, often taking Architect’s responsabilities. The projects shown are only a few of the ones I have been involved in.

2018-present I began working with Claire Sa, the director of the practice, to design and develop this project base in Almoçageme, Portugal. It is an old 4.2 hectare plot of farmland with a series of dilapidated farmhouses. The intention for this ambitious project is to create a “Farmstay” holiday destination, and to work in combination with a local winery to use the farmland once again as vineyards. The project requires us to navigate the Portuguese planning and heritage system, as the buildings are listed. This project is still, therefore, in it’s early stages and is undergoing archeological site studies. 28 |MIRANDA LYLE PÉREZ PORTFOLIO

For as long as I can remember I have had a fascination with art. Architecture is a huge part of my creative self, but I also love to practice figure drawing and creating characters, objects, and worlds whcih are not based on any one particular observation of the real world.
