01. Bionics / Experimental Library _ Monstera Reconnect Studio Code XYZ Prof. Daniel Dendra WS 2008-2009 Dessau Institute of Architecture

The Bionics Studio was a challenge to discover the green world and it’s potential as inspiration for systems applied in architecture. More than a mimicry or a estethical synthetis of the nature, the task was to look for the principals which plants are using and can be transformed and implemented in the design. The first part of the studio I researched on different subjects like bark trees, tree leaves. After the stuio trip at the Botanical Garden in Munich, analyzing many typologies of plants, I have choosen for further development a tropical rainforest plant which is very famous around the world for its ambiental use. Monstera Deliciosa has a specific leaf shape and venation system which grows holes in different time of it’s life, one reason being the reaction to the heavy rains which can break the leaves. What makes it fascinating about this plant is the venation system which can offer gaps and redistribution, reconnection of the veins leading the richfull growing fluids through the cell tissue. One of the strategies to determine rules behind the venation distribution was to

compare it with the urban pattern, using Space Syntax Analysis. Using all range of scales (10-400m) in the diagrams resulted specific hierarchies, the most succsefull scale being around 100m where the most used paths are somewhere inbetween the sides and the middle of the secondary veins. The distribution system thorugh the plant can be easily compared to the information organisation in a library and how the new media possibilities can change the information sharing with its multiple and flexible connections. Starting from the venation system the information distribution and organisation transforms into tectonic platforms which are connected through multiple points using smooth slopes. Having an overall look the slabs are continuously offering ways of descending or ascending. In this sense all the domains of information are interconnected, bridging different fields of information. The result is a complex layering of melted paltforms, making possible the connection and reconnection of informations and the flexible flow thorugh the system.

02. Bad Bank / Paris, La Defense Studio Bad Bank Prof. Daniel Dendra SS 2009 Dessau Institute of Architecture

In the global economic crisis context, the major role of the driving actions is taken by the banks all over the world. Offering loans and credits with no guarantees on a background of impressive global growth, at a certain point collapsed and created the global economical instability. How would a bank headquarter look like and be representative for contemporary time?

The Bad Bank is the financial instituion generated by the state to collect all the bad assets from all the other banks with debts. The site, in the financial center of Paris, La Defense, offers a huge open space, due to the 2 cemeteries placed near the Grand Arch. The feeling on the site is that of exposure, beeing seen from all over the facades on the urban context. This showing off place took me to the idea of voyeurism in a social aspect, reaching the idea of panoptikon and the control of the society.

The specific location of the tower is on the visibility line slightly twisted from the famous axis of Paris, such as the new building should be visible from the urban plazza in front of the Arch and to be perceived within the frame of it.

The architectural proposal is based on visual relations between cell unit base offices. The main structure of the tower is composed of 6 vertical cores which are populated by the cells according to the visual connections between them and to the visual lines passing through the building. By this the financial instituion make a difference comparing to the enlcosed and empowering images of the bank program thorugh out the history. Highlighting this idea, a gradient kind of densification of office cells from down to up gives the opposite pyramidal static image of banks built before.

The 3D printed model represents a previous model study in the whole procces, with a single core and with different orientation of the office cells.

03. National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo Diploma Project “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism June 2010 Coordinator : Conf. Dr. Francoise Pamfil Structure Coordinator : Eng. Stefania Spanu

National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, a 2stage competition from 2009, is planned to be build on the site of Vestbanen (the old west trainstation) right next to the Oslo City Hall, The Nobel Prize Museum, Pipervika Bay, the old Fortress, and the future cultural axis leading to the other end to the Oslo Opera by Snohetta. After analyzing the site I pointed out 3 main problems which are key issues for the proposal: the context of the 2 buildings on the site: the Nobel Prize Museum and the Coffee House (both former buildings fo the train station) from another historically layer , at a different scale than the surrounding closer in tiem development or reconversed old docks of the harbour; the urban island gap feature of the site, with 4 urban fronts; the huge amoung of square meters required by the brief. On the right side the images show different stages with specific program distribution or urban atitudes to the site or history of the site, part of the experimentation I did in the first half of the project. In the end the wining solution offers a 3stripe division with continous flow for circulaiton connecting spaces through different ramps.

Taking in consideration the program brief there are 4 parts: contemporary art, old art, architecture and design it add a certain complexity to the organisation, and in the same time it can make a refernce at the concept of ‘museion’ firstly used in egyptian civilasation being a place where information could be accesed and discussed in meetings of philosophers or teachers and their discipols. The proposed concept take 3 main steps: an urban green plaza next to the Nobel Prize Museum, the new Museum entrance and the street; a composition of long stripes creating inbetween courts and inside-outside transparent spaces, in a continuity wiht the Akker Brygge urban pattern; the new volumes are linked with the neighboorhood building heights, with a cantilever part offering views to the bay upside the front house and a high tower kind of part marking the intersection from the opposite corner intersection; and last but not least a segregation of the 4 types of exhibits on different floors connected through smooth ramps, for a feeling of continuity in the circulaiton and absorbing information from different domains.

The main entrance is under the cantilever volume in strong connection with the back entrance for the Nobel Prize Museum enclosing a small urban “pocket plazza correlated with all the other urban spaces. The interior exhibtions are either open spaces found in between the atriums or encolsed open spaces for the specific pieces of art expose din this manner. Coming back at the functional organisation beisdes the main galeries there will be a temporary exhibition at the ground flloor, a library, laboratories for special wokshops, a bele vue cafe in the cantiliver part, museum shops, auditorium, and the technical spaces specific(different tempreatures rooms, deposits, storages, restauration spaces) for museums, offices for the personal.

The facade, mostly a solid wall due to the interior lighting scenario specific to the museum spaces, offers quick views through and from outside from the romboidal pattern windows. The proposed romboidal white silver metal tilling comes from the design patterns specific to scandinavian culture. A variety and gradient movement of the opening scale highlights certain spots in the plan and also curvatures of the whole volume related to the outside urban spaces. As for the interior, the material used for the floor is wood, bringing local material in the interior atmosphere.

04. Human Development City_ Updating United Nations Headquarters NYC Master Thesis _ July 2011 Dessau Institute of Architecture (DIA) 1st Advisor: Prof. Christos Passas 2nd Advisor: Prof. Alfred Jacoby Teaching Assistant: Alexander Kalachev

Updating United Nations Headquarters NYC / Master Thesis _ Dessau Institute of Architecture (DIA) Team: Mircea Mogan & Karim Soliman First semester we started reasearching on United Nations Organisation and on nations statistics through out time. As a reaction to the original building, designed in the International Style thinking, our contemporary proposal should represent the complexity and diveristy of all nations and offer spaces for a better communication at a diplomatic level present to our times. Looking over the last 7 decades we can be sure of an impressive global growth and human development, unique in history. We have choosen Human Development our topic for the future United Nations Headquarters, being the main goal of humanity today. After analyzing the Human Development Index (HDI) we planned to speculate the performance of the countries till 2050 according to the intentions of the United Nations in it’s Millennium Goals: that all the countries of the world will be very high developed.

As a strategy for generating the whole complex we have choosen to work on the HDI graph which concentrates all countries performances and in the same time can be translated into a section. By extruding a line path of a specific country in Z direction according to the years of participation in the Organisation and including the same path by projecting on the new surface, results the basis tectonics. Today 192 country’s representative Missions in United Nations are mostly spread in Manhattan, New jersey and Brooklyn, wasting a lot of time in traveling between missions to the headquarters and back, which decreases their presence in the headquarters. One of the design ideas is to bring all of these missions in house together with the UN bodies.

The mission’s places are shifting periodically in reaction with the changes in the world based on the performance of the human development in each country. The rule is to make sure that in every scenario all the countries from the very high developed or the high developed, have a neighbor from the medium developed or low developed countries. The goal is to increase the probability to meet each other informally and to give more opportunity for better communication.

The new United Nations headquarter will be moved from New York to Zimbabwe . Zimbabwe has the lowest Human Development Index (0.14) through all the time since inauguration of the United Nations till today. Located in the Southern Africa near to the 15th lowest human developed countries.

The interior perspectives show different snapshots of the General Assembly, and it’s connection with all the layered slopes and slabs. On the same hand, it is visible the intelligent flexible membrane of the facade, able to change it’s shape and be in the same time an information medium.

Looking at the internal circulation and distribution system, there will be implemented intelligent screens and floors which will improve the interaction between people and on the other hand will guide every person on his routes through the building.

05. Animated Boxes_ Proccesing Part of the Proccesing Elective Course, I created a code for a scheme of boxes which can move through space and link to each other making a changing web, while in the same time can change their size. The scope of the course was to learn the Proccesing syntax and to experiment the potential of this software.

06. Urban furniture / Panneling tools _ Rhino CAD Logic Course WS 2008-2009 Prof. Daniel Dendra Design team: Mircea Mogan, Alexandra Virlan, Andreea Nica The task for this project was to challenge the possibilities of panneling method by populating a surface with a component, to understand all the geometrical deformations of each piece of the system. Following with the fabrication procedures we used the lasercutter to produce each separate element and ending with building up the whole structure. The software means for this project was Panneling Tools Plug-in for Rhino. “Tex and relax is inspired from the textile fabrics, in the way different knots are used in sewing. After experimetning we decided on the final 3d component and the next step was to focus on different types of joining them. The overall image shows a 3d lattice structure, performing the role of an urban lounge bench, which offers flexible ways of sitting and relaxing, due to the curved surfaces.

Starting from 2 inputs, the topic of the workshop: reconnecting real and virtual through architecture means and the site for experimentation: Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, we proposed an inflatable ground which will improve the urban site next to the bridge (empty most of the time) and in the same time will be a site for reconnecting social actions bringing the virtual (forums, social networks, web platfroms) into the physical world.

08. Cloud City / Urban canopy anOther Architect, Berlin International architecture competition for public open roof system connecting the train station and the bus station plazas in Wolfsburg, Germany

International architecture competition for public open roof system connecting the train station and the bus station plazas in Wolfsburg, Germany Design team: Daniel Dendra, Daniel da Rocha, Mircea Mogan, Alexandra Virlan

During a 3 month internship at anOther Archtiect Office in Berlin I was part of the design team for the Wolfsburg urban canopy competition organised by the municipality of Wolfsburg. The site is one of the most important and significant urban condition, next to the central train station, bus terminal, the bridge linking with the AutoStadt (Wolkswagen Plant) and the famous Phaeno Center by Zaha Hadid Architects.

The solution consists in a series of canopies which are creating a continous covered and open path from the bus termianl to the train station. In order to keep the visual qualities of extended and branched kind plaza the proposed canopy rises high, obtaining a wide sheltered space. The specific components of the overall structure are the different size “coluds or coushions made out steel easy to fabricate in the automobile plant the icon of the city. My contribution to the project started with the design proposals and continued with the drawing of the explenatory diagrams, final drawings (sections) techincal detail, photo editing and final Photoshop render editing an din the end the physical model(3d printingpreparing stl files, lasercutting, painting)

An important im part of the competition was the p physical model at 1:200 scale reaching large dimensions around 2 to 3m due to the urban scale of the project. We used wood and plexi boards, and 3d printed parts for the ccoushion canopies

09.a. Office Building on Lascar Catargiu Str. SYAA Architecture Office _ Bucharest

The task of the project is to design an 3floor office building which will be rented to small companies. The key factor of the site is the fact that is situated on one of the most important bulevards in Bucharest, in a continous street aligmnet with historically and archtiecturally valuable buildings (Eclectic, Art Nouveau Style). Being part of a larger team, my task for this project was to articulate a series of proposals, moslty as a volumetric study and facade systems. The volumetric and internal oraganisation are determined one haned by the neighborhood condition with the highly decorated and imposabal archtiecture presence of kind of palace building. A simple monovolume geometry is the most succsefull solution, being enriched by a complex and detaield facade system .Teh tectonics of the new building react to the balcony of the building next to it , marking and eclosing the entrance area.

09.b. Maritime Port Headquarters Constanta Harbour SYAA Architecture Office _ Bucharest

The site for the future Maritime Port Headquarters is placed in the Constanta Harbour, close to the historic center of the city. Another factor realted to the place was the visibilityof the site due to the surroundings landscape increasingin slopes, which gives a certain presence of the future building. The initial brief from the institution representat was asking for a maximum build area, due to the amount of offices included. In my proposal I searched for a solution which will be fragmented into boxy components offices to the idea of pilling up with the intetion of creating a dynamic state of the volumes and also to create inbetween gaps. (gardens&teraces). The aim of fragmentation is to be corelated with the surrounding urban fabric, due to the bigness factor required by the instituition.I contributed with the 3Dmodeling, drawing of plans, and photshop editing.

The project is an impressive urban plan to relink and regenerate urban spots and paths in Bucharest. Involving most of the succsefull and highly proffesional and contemporary offices in the city, the proposal were distributed to different teams for diveristy and complexity in the generating proccess. My work was focused on producing of the final images with 3d modeling and Photoshop editing.
