Concept
The concept is made with inspiration from homemade photographs of the 30's (their poses, clothes and facial expressions) trying to convey sexual and gender freedom which is one of the most important themes of the movie Cabaret. The artistic approach also comes from the Hollywood movies of those years, where dresses, feathers and costumes were all the rage. Finally, this concept was meant to express fun and cabaret aesthetics while demonstrating important topics that are still dispensable today such as patriarchalism and being yourself without thinking of others.
Editorial style and photographer's influence
The style of this editorial comes mostly from inspiration of an editorial for Vogue Paris from 2016 where several women are shown in black and white men's suits with "masculine" poses and nonchalant looks, another source of inspiration comes from these portraits where the camera is at the same height as the model and the model is looking directly at the camera demonstrating hard facial expressions like the photographs of the famous photographer Josh Wool but also the editorial for Dior called “les adventureuses de Dior” from 1973.
Location
The location is practically a studio with a white background because we wanted to have a basic selfportrait aesthetic to focus on the models and their facial expressions, to get the viewer's attention. There was also use of different light points in order to create shadows for the models to elongate and highlight their facial and body features.
Two models were chosen as we wanted to photograph a couple to add the romanticism that was portrayed in the movie Cabaret, we wanted one to be taller than the other to have the illusion of a strong man as well as the delicate and glamorous woman.
Models
Styling
For the styling we wanted to make a modern mix between 30s fashion and contemporary with a camp style, the model playing the man would wear an oversize suit style outfit and a hat, the woman would wear basic tight dresses and feather accessories to give the illusion of 30s glam. Overall the concept called for basic outfits that expressed Cabaret but with a modern twist. For the props we wanted few things as we wanted something simple to focus on the facial expressions, these involved a mirror inspired by the image of the woman in the black dress, the cigar for the man and a boa with black feathers to recreate the feather necklace.
