The aim of this landscape project is the enhancement of the territorial area that
spreads south of the city of Elche down to the Nature Parks of “El Hondo” and the
saltpans of Santa Pola. This area hoards an extraordinary cultural, environmental
and ethnographic heritage, in the need of strategies that take steps in order to stop
degrading dynamics that are putting it at risk and to revitalize the whole area.
Strategies focus on two fields:
Water and its landscapes. The water reservoir of “El Hondo” and the saltpans of
Santa Pola act as the core of a matchless irrigation system, typical of traditional
Mediterranean agriculture and of worldwide importance.
Elche´s Countryside. The countryside that spans between the city of Elche and the
wetlands is in the need of a full landscape project that will make the most of a
territory now at a standstill.
