The project The Ways to Jerusalem emphasises the value of the ancient terrestrial and maritime routes used by merchants and pilgrims, secular and religious figures on the long journeys to Jerusalem. The itinerary is composed by the maritime route in the historical Venetian “Stato da Mar, which comprised the Dalmatian and Greek coasts and isles of Adriatic and Ionian sea, besides Crete, Rhodes and Cyprus where maritime pilgrimage was conducted for at least two centuries. An international Association "The Way to Jerusalem" was established to manage the transnational Itinerary. The stopovers of the maritime pilgrimage were identified by a historical research and they are the locations where a creating/enhancing local body (public-private partnership) will develop a local cultural-touristic product (local route). Each local route will offer to visitors a journey done by excitement (outdoors activities in environmental heritages), education (visit to local tangible cultural heritages) and entertainment (enjoyment of intangible local heritages), following the Sustainable Tourism 3E model (excitement, education, entertainment). The process to create local cultural/religious route is organized on the basis of each individual country involved, in four distinct and complementary phases: 1. Identification of the natural and cultural heritages surrounding the staging post 2. Characterization of the route and individual thematic staging post. 3. Executive planning of the route in systemic interaction of natural, cultural, economic and social elements. 4. Creation of the ´tourism-cultural products` and the relative promotion and management plan. The transnational itinerary is thus composed by the local routes linked by the common theme of the long maritime journey to Jerusalem and its management falls back on the International Association, which will be equipped with a Marketing Plan to work in the proposition of Itinerary on the International Market.
