AI Generated Artwork Recently I found myself deeply engrossed by Artificial Intelligence generated artwork. Look at how far technologies has advanced. Artificial Intelligence generated art is a new form of art where a the AI, can generate images based on a set of parameters (the prompt) provided by the user. The AI then generate new images by combining or altering existing images available on the internet. This is a new and exciting technology, with basically limitless possibility to create new idea or concept art. These are some of my experiment with AI generated artwork, using: 1. Disco Diffusion 2. Nightcafe Studio 3. Dall-E Mini 4. MidJourney

Character Design I love playing Dungeon and Dragons. D&D was a gateway for me to start designing and illustrating characters. At first, I mostly develop my own character, doodling the face I had in my mind on the empty space on my character’s sheet. What is the expression looks like when they are angry, sad, laughing, tired, or scared. And then after that, I began to draw their outfit. Designing the outfit was always the tricky part, because I want my character, although living in a fantasy world, based on reality. So I used a lot of reference photos and images of how people in the past dress themselves, what did the proper armor looks like, and so on. It started from designing my own character, now has become designing characters for clients around the world.

THROND DWARRODUM Thrond was a dwarf that originated from a mountain kingdom far, far away. It has become the custom of his people, that when a dwarf has come to a certain age, he will be forced to go out from the kingdom and community. To enter the wilderness and make a name for himself. It is a rite of passage for the dwarves, to prove themself worthy. . Therefore, he set out and became a lone wanderer in a harsh world that is not friendly for a young dwarf at that time. . Until one day he met and joined as a member of Pathfinders and did several extraordinary campaigns, through fire and darkness, pain and suffering. But in the end, they survived, Thrond survived. He hacks and slashes every adversary thrown unto him. . One day, before a great final battle, he went to a mountain alone. There he reforged his ax with rare metal. When it finished, he lifted the ax to the night sky. And it shines, white and bright. Brighter than the stars in the sky. . Thrond became known as Thrond Whiteaxe. And later, after the great final battle, he came back to the mountain and found a clan. The Whiteaxe clan, the dwarves who were born under the bright stars.

The Armor

The Monster Head One of the challenges in this illustration is how to depict the head of the monster quite accurately. To create a contour effect in the head and horns, I used the crosshatch shading technique.

The Head/Face

The dwarven race is famous for their smithing skills, therefore the armor design should be the main point in this illustration. Their armor provides more coverage, with thicker steel plates than human armor. It looks bulky, but actually very agile, giving the user more mobility and versatility. Dwarven armor is highly durable and sold with the highest price among other races’ armor.

Thrond’s face and head designs are inspired by Greek statues. The emphasis of this character is on the way the beard is depicted in detail, with lines that define the contours and grooves of each strand of hair.

When I look for examples of medieval armor, most have plain chest armor designs. I made the dwarves’ breastplates have curves that projected the shape of the body, almost like a roman breastplate, but with a more defined shape.

Farin Farin is a son from a noble family, but he doesn’t really fit into the hedonistic lifestyle of his parents. He loves to wander into the forest, rather than attending parties, and prefers hunting and foraging for foods in the wild than eating grand banquets. He prefers to do everything by himself and spend his time alone. One day, as he enter adulthood, his parents appointed him to be the one to lead and handle the family business, the only thing that he hates the most. So he decided to leave and run away. He spent months wandering alone aimlessly through many lands, until one day he met an interesting party. A group of mixed-race adventurers of humans, dwarves, elves, and halflings is a very rare sight indeed. He then joined this party, which will bring him into many events, even wars that will decide the fate of the land he loves to wander in.

16

Hidden Face

Leather Armor

elven Longbow

Farin is a very mysterious character. He always appeared to hide his face, be it to his friends or enemies.

I observed that most of the archer armor prioritizes mobility over protection. This is because archer focuses on agility, and avoid wearig bulky and heavier armor.

Farin use elven longbow. The bow of elves have distinctive curves to allow its user to shoot further and faster. It is known to be more superior than human bow. The longbow incorporate curving artwork to capture the essense of elves. It was handcrafted using Yew wood, like the english longbow, and the string was made from elven golden hair strands.

He prefers to shoot his enemies stealthily, rather than direct confrontation. Thus he becomes a very mysterious archer whose enemies never know what or who is attacking him from a distance.

For that reason, I prioritize Farin’s character using more leather armor than iron. Farin also does not wear a helmet because it will only hinder and reduce the accuracy of his arrows.

17

Farin also modified and add cloth for better grip and control.

Azoulf Azoulf is a druid halfling. Very shy and often likes to wander into deep forest alone. He will avoid contact with other people if possible, and only trusts animals. Azoulf ’s parents were murdered when he was a child, and he still vaguely remember the scene. He was also going to be killed, but survived as he run into forest. Being confused and scared, he wandered deep into the forest in the dark, until finally he dropped out of exhaustion and hunger. He awoken days later, in a sun bear nest. He was being taken care of by a sun bear mother, along with her other cubs. From then on Azoulf lived in the forest, getting to know every animals and plants. He learned to communicate with animals, and the wild things befriend him. He felt happy living in the forest for a moment, until one night he dreamed of the scene of the murder. Then he remember his anger. He leave the forest from then on, to track and search for the identity of his parent’s murderer. Azoulf want to know who, and he definitely want to know why. Lately he joined the Pathfinders guild and go to various places with some of his very trusted friends. The adventure brings a lot of experience, and more importantly, he finally found a clue to what happened on that night a long time ago.

18

Animal Handle

Camping Kit

Animal Trinkets

Azoulf is acharacter that has deep connection with animals. He trust animal more than humans, and vice versa. These animals follows azoulf by their own will, and Azoulf never drive them away.

Before joining with the Pathfinders guild, Azoulf always have journey alone. This means he always bring his own camping kit and also field cooking utensils. This habit stays with him, and actually very beneficial for the group.

Some animal actually give perception advantages to Azoulf, such as the owl will react to any small sound, the tarsier can see in the pitch dark, and many more.

Azoulf also a great cook; he have a vast knowledge on forest foraging, and always produce great delicacies using any ingredients he can find in the forest.

Azoulf greatly honor his friendship with every animals he encoundered throughout the journey. But the journey itself was never always safe. He often encountered a dangerous beast or enemies, and sometimes, one of his animals died tragically in the battle.

19

Azoulf always keep a trinkets from his deceased animals, such as the eagle feathers he wore after a great eagle had died protecting him from danger in the past.

Ustadz Ustadz was a character illustration requested by one of my D&D game friends. Ustadz is a half-elven cleric, who used to have martial arts that were associated with meditative and spiritual practices related to religious basis. His martial art school is located deep in the mountain, secluded from any civilization. He once have a prodigy student, who excel in every teaching and every philosophical thought. This student was meant to be his successor, but suddenly he was betrayed. The student disappeared from the school, leaving trails of blood from all the other students he massacred. Seeing the danger of his student becoming, ustadz buried all of the victims and set out leaving his now empty school and mountain behind. He needs to find this student and set everything right, even kill him if he must.

Turondor Turondor was a famous architect/builder of the dwarven kingdom. His prominent skills in building fortified structure were trained by the Kingdom’s own master architect. He designed every castles exist in his kingdom, and he designed it in detail and meticulously, down to every nooks and crannies. I made this character with how the medieval architects looks in mind. With large and bulky tools and hammer, bag full of construction drawing, and glasses to emphasize how he always sat down on his seat to draw and design. He always wear a hard leather shoes with iron guard on the toe of the shoe to prevent injury in the field. Fashion wise, he always wear his baggy leather trousers, topped with leather apron. Turondor prioritize simplicity and to maintain his mobility over style in his outfit, to prevent any disasters during his construction activities.

The Trio Gamblers The Trio Gamblers were three characters I made with two other friends in a short Dungeon and Dragons Campaign. The stories revolves around the three mercenaries hired by their client, to investigate the involvement of a gambler king in the assassination of the prime minister’s son. The three mercenaries then team up and become a gambler themselves, using technologies and mind trick to keep winning in the gamble, and gain reputation to access the gambler king’s “kingdom”. The female android, was once a human. But she was once diagnosed with a rare virus infection, and had to transfer her consciousness into a robot brain to survive. The technology had advanced so much, that now she looks like a normal human. But under her synthetic skin, there’s no organic matter left. The man standing by her side, on the other hand, is considered a purist: a person who refuses robotic limbs. He still 100% human; flesh and blood, where everyone around him has modified their body to robotic limbs. He is a tech savvy, a top programmer and hacker. He got a lot of invention; one of which is the shade he wear, which can hack into his opponent’s neural connection, especially those who have robotic brain/limbs. The dwarf, is an engineer, but at the same time a tech and robotic junkie. Hence you can see he has adopted robotic limbs extensively, even parts of his head. These limbs gave him a lot of advantages, especially in building robot and drones. He is like mini field factory or workshop for the team.

Lorn In this sketch of Lorn, I tried to learn how to illustrate a character whom always stay in the shadow. I experimented in using shadow, which hides the detail but at the same time stimulate viewer’s imagination on how he looks based on the little amount of body part and gesture I shown. --------------Lorn is a half tiefling half human, rogue shadow hunter. Being hated for his appearance, he always hide in darkness to avoid trouble. His parents were despised by society, for marriage between human and tiefling were regarded as a thing only done by evil lunatic. Discarded by the society, his family moved to a hut deep in the dark forest. There they lived a fairly peaceful life for sometimes. But the hatred of man is not easily forgotten, as one night after a long hunt, Lörn came back to his house and found his house has been ransacked, and his parents lay down dead. In that moment the fear of society turns to hatred, and he vow to the dead body of the parents, to set out and hunt for the murderer. He used to hunt animals for life, now he will hunt for revenge.

Environment Art The Lord of the Rings was perhaps my biggest influence in starting to draw environment art. Tolkien (the author) describes the setting in a way that triggers my imagination, and pick up pencil and draw them on the paper. I gradually began to draw non-Middle Earth (or non Tolkien) related landscape. I drew mainly environment for Dungeon and Dragon game, and other fantasy land imagined by my few freelance clients.

Gravesend Town Gravesend was a commision work for a client. He requested illustration of a hamlet named Gravesend Town. The setting of this town is a medieval quasi-Northern European aesthetic with touches of Tibetan influence. The residents are consists of a mixture of human, elf, dwarf, and mousepeople. There is also one fishperson family and one minotaur family. I approached the client’s prompt by first communicating about the brief description of the city, the people and their cultures. The more I understand the background story, the more I can illustrate in detail precisely. For this project, I choose to draw from human eye level, as it communicate the environment and atmosphere better. By drawing from human eye level, the viewer can feel related and easily place him/herself in the scene (or the eye of the main character in their game).

26

Gravesend Town

The important point to show in this illustration are mainly architecture. Architecture can define the socio-cultural aspect of a society. One of the challenge of this illustration is in depicting crowds, where I have to be able to balance the scale based on the distance to the point of view. This includes how detailed the people on the foreground, and less detail for the crowds in the background. I also experimented in making the drawing to have a little bit fish eye effect, to create wide angle illustration.

04 Fan Art

The lord of the Rings has influenced me in many pen and ink illustration. I read the book since before the movies came out, and I have a very close relationship with the characters in the story. I have my own interpretation and imagination on how each characters look; their face, their clothes, emotion, etc. The idea was to draw characters of the Lord of the Rings, according to my own imagination, without being affected by movie’s visualization. This was a self project, to reunite with my own version of LOTR character.

Digital Art I started to draw in digital medium quite early, using my parent’s old Macintosh. Many hours I poured clicking mouse into Kid Pix program, playing around with various stamps and colors, creating images and art unburdened with rules and full of imagination. Years later, I still draw digitally using various programs and hardware. I used to use Photoshop, but now I mostly draw using Procreate on my ipad. My art may not be as free as those childhood times, but the fun in creating them still feel the same.
