Pitted (verb)

ODR Jargon

In Winter Sports: to make a turn in super deep powder, resulting in a bunch of snow flying in your face. Oddly, winter sports enthusiasts see this as a bad and good thing; “Dude, you just got pitted hard…sick!” Surfers: riding a wave in the middle of a barrel; a surfer’s dream. General Public: something to do with an olive and the center being removed.

Tomahawk (verb) In Winter Sports: to fall violently, on a slope, head over feet, in a motion that resembles an axe being thrown. Commonly used in the phrase, “Bruh, you just tomahawked… sick!” General Public: the actual axe.

GEAR SHOP Find everything you need to live for adventure this fall and winter at the Gear shop. This year we’re hitting the pow hard and offering more gear than ever so that you can join us in style!

SEASON WINTER EQUIPMENT RENTALS Ski and snowboard equipment is available to rent for the season. Pick up your items and keep them until Monday, April 12, 2021 per availability. Adult and youth options are available.

r Neal Made What is your favorite part about working at Outdoor Recreation? I love coming to work every day knowing that I am “living the dream!" Seeing people’s faces light up the first time they carve a snowboard, catch a wave, or see something totally new and exciting makes all the paperwork I do completely worth it. I get to take people kayaking, scuba diving, skiing, surfing, skydiving, hiking and climbing all over Japan. I have the best job on Earth!

What do you wish the Misawa community knew about your programs? No one knows what they are doing the first time, and that’s alright! Our guides and instructors have a plethora of experience and information that we love to share. Stop by and hang out, ask questions, sign up for a trip, it’s never too late to discover your new favorite sport. Anyone who claims there is nothing to do in Misawa is lying to you, this place is awesome and we can show you!

What is your favorite Misawa Outdoor Recreation memory? There are already so many great memories, from scuba trips, to summiting mountains, and jumping from planes over Tokyo. But what northern Japan experience would be complete without skiing or snowboarding the best conditions on Earth? Once I had the opportunity to spend some time in the mountains teaching backcountry skiing and avalanche rescue. It literally snowed nine feet in two weeks, a ski bum’s dream! One day in particular, I woke up in a snow cave to a foot and a half of fresh snow and clear blue skies, it was the perfect break in the weather we had been waiting for. We quickly gathered our gear, boiled water for a hot breakfast, and began climbing to the summit of Mt. Yotei (a dormant volcano where we were training). A few hours and many laughs later, we were standing on top of the world with crystal clear views of Japan, all the way to the ocean in every direction! Cheers of excitement echoed off the volcanic rim, as we skied down into the caldera and enjoyed the deepest, lightest snow I have ever skied. I remember standing deep inside the crater, chest deep in snow, with a huge smile on my face thinking, “I’m skiing inside of a volcano right now‌ who else gets to do this for work?" Out of a thousand memories I have made so far, that is truly one I will carry with me for the rest of my life!
