Leisure Times Through the Years
The Leisure Times has a history just like the rest of Misawa Air Base, and we are on a quest to learn more about our beginnings. Brenda Akanuma has been living here in Misawa for most of her life and part of her history includes a stint in the Marketing & Publicity Office that designs these very pages! After initially coming to Misawa in 1979 as an active duty member of the United States Navy, she met her husband and planted roots here that have grown ever since. She left the Navy and went to work for Misawa Insatsu, a local printing shop that printed The Northern Light and later the Leisure Times. Eventually Mrs. Akanuma decided to seek employment on Misawa Air Base. She knew the marketing director at the time, Chuck Nolan, since he came often to their printing offices. She decided to jump in with that gang and become a graphic designer. From 2001 to 2004 she worked at the Marketing Office, moving up the ladder from graphic designer to assistant director. Afterward she had a brief tenure at the Misawa Club and then joined the team at the Misawa Inn where she has been ever since. At the Misawa Inn she has been front desk manager, manager and is now a quality assurance
evaluator and trainer. During her time at Marketing, the Leisure Times was still being printed in black and white with a color gloss cover. Mrs. Akanuma started the very first advertisements in the Leisure Times, bringing all of her old contacts over from Misawa Insatsu. By the time she left, the entire magazine was printed in color, and large format printers had been purchased to allow posters and banners to be produced in house. Some of her favorite events and memories from that period include WXW (World Xtreme Wrestling) where the Marketing Department put special ads and decals all over one of their cars, Chaka Khan, Toto, Polynesian Night at the Misawa Club and an office TDY to Yokota for training. The Faultline had its grand opening, Viki Nova came to sing on base and broke a tooth, and Wild Weasels’ Bar and Grill was known as Magnums Steak and Seafood. The 35th Force Support Squadron also won the 2003 LeMay Award for best FSS in the Air Force. Mrs. Akanuma also worked with Wakouko Sato, who is still working at the Marketing Office, and Mrs. Akanuma was present for her wedding.

Wednesday, Nov. 25–Sunday, Nov. 29 Departs at 6 a.m. $675 per person | $250 R4R price Ages 18+ Hokkaido shines bright with a recent green light for travel! Let’s break out of Honshu and explore the North Island cities of Hakodate, Otaru, and Sapporo. This trip will focus on Hokkaido’s culture, nature, history, and food and is an excellent way to be introduced to the largest prefecture in Japan. In addition to some ‘must see’ attractions, we will soak in wild hot springs, hike an active volcano and take in the largest illumination installation in Japan. Our first night will introduce us to tatami floors and futon beds of a traditional Japanese Ryokan, or inn, near the coast. All other evenings we have booked single rooms in newly remodeled business hotels for you.
The west side of Aomori Prefecture is often overlooked as people tend to travel north or south, but this is a huge mistake! There are so many amazing places to visit and beautiful things to see that one day is not enough, but we've packed as much as possible into this day. Volcanic black sand beaches, oceanside hot springs, ancient shrines, sacred blue ponds and more await travelers to Furofushi. Tattoos and swimwear are not permitted.
Karamatsu Onsen ot Springs H Overnight Club Saturday, Nov. 14–Sunday, Nov. 15 Departs at 7 a.m. $135 per person | $100 R4R price Ages 18+ This once-in-a-lifetime trip takes our Hot Springs Club to an authentic Japanese haunted house, originally owned by the first president of the Nissan Car Company. The water that flows in this onsen comes directly from the underground source and is trapped for your enjoyment. Trapped, not unlike the Zashiki Warashi (ghosts) haunting the property. Don’t worry though, good fortune comes to those who see these friendly spirits. Tattoos are permitted, swimwear is not.

18 | November 2020
Waking up early on a crisp, cool autumn morning, I was always full of excitement and anticipation for Thanksgiving, my favorite part of November growing up. Thanksgiving felt like the first step on the ladder to Christmas time for me. Spirits seem generally lighter, everyone gets along just a little bit better and the food is absolutely incredible. My mother used to begin prepping and cooking certain dishes the night before Thanksgiving. She would stand over the oven for hours pouring her heart into her cooking and prepping the turkey that my father would fry the next morning. I observed her techniques and assisted her like a little sous chef, chopping vegetables and gathering other ingredients for her until all the prep that could possibly be done had been finished. We would then go to sleep and get up bright and early the next day to complete preparations for our Thanksgiving feast. I always put on my best clothes, did my makeup and fixed my hair. I would help my mother in the kitchen until there was nothing left for me to do and then I would go into the living room and watch the Thanksgiving Day parade as my other family members began to congregate. The smell of casseroles and pies danced before our noses as our mouths watered with anticipation. Mother would yell from the kitchen, “It’ll just be a few more minutes y’all!” and we would linger around the kitchen counter awaiting her permission to dig into the amazing spread laid before us. Once we were given the go ahead, everyone would fill their plates and we would eat and talk about everything that had been going on with our lives lately. We would joke around, laugh and watch movies together until our eyes eventually grew heavy. Late into the evening we would hug and say our heartfelt goodbyes, until next time. This year I cannot be with my family in the United States but I have my own family here in Misawa with my husband and our two cats. While stationed here we invite our friends and those with no place to go to spend Thanksgiving with our little family. Like my mother, I begin prepping the night before and finish off the meal the next morning. Feelings of love and warmth envelope me as I recreate my favorite parts of my mother’s usual Thanksgiving spread. Instead of waiting for family members to pile in, I watch as friends and coworkers come through the door with smiles on their faces and their Thanksgiving favorites in their hands. We put together each diverse dish to create the most unique Thanksgiving feast. “It’ll just be a few more minutes y’all!” I yell from the kitchen. Everyone begins to gather around as I set the final dish on the counter. Plates and cutlery are passed to each person as we talk about the dishes we made and what they mean to us. We eat each other’s contributions to the dinner and reminisce about past celebrations at each person’s home. We joke around and laugh as we play Mario Kart and watch movies together. Once everyone has had their fill and said their final goodbyes, I fall into my couch with a deep sigh. I am exhausted but feel accomplished and thankful for the wonderful people whom I had the pleasure to entertain. I used to dream of one day being able to cook my heart out for a family of my own and now my wish has come true. I have genuinely found a way to enjoy all my favorite parts of my home away from home. If you are looking for a good career, don’t be afraid to start with an entry level position. Your determination and demonstration of good leadership skills can help you grow professionally. A great example of someone furthering their NAF career is Gissela Garcia H. De Boatwright. Mrs. Boatwright started her career in the food service industry right here in Misawa as a Food Service Worker (Barista) at the Café Mokuteki. With her great work ethic and enthusiasm she was quickly promoted to Food Service Worker (Leader). Next step on her professional path was Café Mokuteki Assistant Manager. With her strong leadership, she gained respect from her employees and full confidence from her supervisors, which lead to her current position as the Café Mokuteki Manager. What advice would you give someone starting out in the NAF workforce? The best advice I can give someone who has just started working in the NAF workforce is to always work hard and try to exceed the expectations set at the workplace. A job well done will give you the satisfaction of being able to succeed at whatever you do and it will open many doors for you to grow professionally. I have worked at Café Mokuteki for about three years. I started as a barista and because of my hard work I was given the opportunity to grow and work my way up to manager. I am very grateful that my supervisors were able to recognize and value my dedication.
What do you like most about being a NAF employee? As a military spouse and constantly having to move to different places, I like the fact that once you become a NAF employee it is easier for you to find a job within the NAF work force no matter where you go. This gives you some peace of mind when you move to a completely new place.
Gissela Garcia H. De Boatwrightht Manager, Café Mokuteki

What is your favorite part about working at the Arts & Crafts Center? I really enjoy all of the interactions that I get to have with people while working at the Arts & Crafts Store. The Staff is like a close knit family and we have tons of fun together on and off the clock. My Japanese coworkers are amazing and I am extremely thankful that I have gotten the opportunity to work alongside them. The relationships and opportunities that I have gained while working at the Arts & Crafts Center are some that I will forever remember and cherish.

What do you wish the Misawa community knew about your facility? I wish the community knew about the huge variety of classes that we offer! Most people don’t realize ze that we actually offer classes for children ranging from ag ages 18 months to 17! We classes. personally also have plenty of adult classe es. I p ersonally wish that I would have been more knowledgeable knowledgeab ble aabout b ut all of the classes that bo before the Arts & Crafts Center offered b efor ef o e I started working there way because it is genuinely a great wa ay tto o meet people! It can be friends overwhelming trying to make friend nds especially when you first get to Misawa but coming to one of our classes really takes the stress out of that even if it’s bringing your kids in to paint and meeting other parents! What is your best Arts & Crafts Center memory? I have too many memories with the Arts & Crafts Center to just name one, but most of them revolve around our customers! We really make it a priority to be as involved with our customers as possible, not only for good customer service but because we are honestly just as committed to their projects as they are! It is truly the most satisfying feeling to have a customer go out of their way to show me a finished project that I helped them will! Leisure TIMES | 29
