September marks the end of summer and the warm temperatures make way for the cooler days and nights. It also marks the end of my Air Force Civil Service Golf career. My wife and I have enjoyed our time here in Misawa and we will miss Japan and all of the friends we have made here. I especially want to thank my staff who are without question the best in the world. I leave knowing that Gosser Golf Course and Misawa golf will be in good hands with Stephen Ritz-Woller, the incoming manager. He spent the last nine years at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb. Make sure to stop in and welcome him and his family to Misawa. If you are ever in northern Georgia, look me up. Until then, see you at the course! Robert E. Are you looking for full-time child care? Misawa currently has four licensed Family Child Care homes. Our providers offer full-time, part-time, hourly and PCS child care. Each provider has their own contract for the services that are provided in their home. All of our providers go through in-depth training, CPR & First Aid training and background checks. Once they are licensed, their program is inspected monthly to ensure their homes are safe and that they are following the standards put in place for licensed FCC homes. If you're looking for care for your child or you want to learn about becoming a Family Child Care provider, please call the FCC office at 226-2273 or 0176-77-2273. Advance registration is required by Tuesday, Sept. 8 by contacting the FCC office. If you live in on-base housing and provide care in your home for more than ten hours a week on a regular basis, you must be licensed by the Unites States Air Force. If you care for two children for five hours each, that also equals to 10 hours of child care. Failure to obtain an AF Family Child Care license may result in the loss of housing privileges. utumn air has an innate way of refreshing the soul after a very hot and sweaty summer. The aroma of pumpkins, apples and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg stimulate the senses. At every turn there are people wearing their coziest clothes while snuggling up to the warmth of a freshly made cup of coffee or hot chocolate. For many Americans, the time of harvest and temperate weather is a favored season.

Falling into Aki

By Hailey Robertson

Of course, we know our own traditions very well, but what are the Japanese doing at this time of year while we munch on caramel apples, play in piles of crunchy brown leaves and sip pumpkin spice lattes to our heart’s content?

The celebration of Shūbun no Hi (秋分の日) or Autumnal Equinox Day marks the beginning of autumn. This celebration has been around for generations and this year it falls on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Shūbun no Hi was originally called Shūki Kōresai (秋季皇霊祭) and is thought to have roots in Ohagi Shintoism and Buddhism. Shūki Kōresai was observed prior to World War II in honor of past emperors of Japan. Japan’s postwar constitution called for the separation of religion and state so Shūki Kōresai was then renamed Shūbun no Hi and considered a non-religious holiday. In present times, Shūbun no Hi is celebrated differently from person to person. Shūbun no Hi falls in line with the observance of Ohigan (お彼岸). Ohigan translates to “the other shore,” which in Buddhism is considered the world of enlightenment. Over time the name has come to represent more of a celebration of ancestors who have passed on to the afterlife. Ohigan lasts seven days; three days before the Autumn Equinox, the day of the equinox and three days after. During this time, red spider lilies referred to as higanbana (彼岸花) begin to bloom. These beautiful flowers tend to grow around graveyards and are said to have poison in their roots, gaining them nicknames like “Ghost Flowers” and “Dead Flowers.” 18 | September 2020

Many of the traditions related to Ohigan are similar to that of the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Japanese families visit the resting place of their loved ones who have passed and tidy them up. They offer prayers along with flowers and seasonal food offerings made of rice and sweet azuki paste called Ohagi (おはぎ). Families enjoy food together and celebrate the lives of their loved ones at their graves. Citizens who may not live close to their family’s resting place may take this time to travel and see something new. Others may choose to take this time to stay home and recharge. Another tradition, Tsukimi (月見), or moon watching, happens during the fall season. Tsukimi evenings are spent gazing at the harvest moon. Many may look upon the moon with wishes of a plentiful harvest and others may take this time to declare feelings of love to someone special. Tsukimi dango (月見団子), or moon viewing dumplings, and other seasonal foods are enjoyed while looking at the moon. Autumn in Japan is viewed similar to the American observance of Thanksgiving. This is a time to relax and be thankful for what you have. Foods like chestnut rice, sweet potatoes, pacific saury and matsutake mushrooms are commonly eaten in Japan during the fall season. Those wanting to immerse themselves in Japanese culture during this time may be wondering how to go about joining in on these traditions. Many here on base are too far away from the resting places of loved ones to go tidy them up and present offerings, but why not call a living relative back home to discuss fond memories of those who have passed? Look up recipes of seasonal Japanese dishes and prepare them using harvest ingredients in the comfort of your home. Travel somewhere nearby that you haven’t explored. Take in the bright beauty of the harvest moon with family and friends and be thankful for the time being spent with loved ones who are here now even though some are so very far. Take time to sit back, relax and enjoy all that Japan has to offer this autumn.

What is Banned Books Week? Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Through the Years

How did the Leisure Times begin? We’re on a quest to learn more about our beginning. We talked with Lead Designer, Wakouko Sato this month to learn more. Wakouko has worked in FSS Marketing & Publicity for 30 years and has designed some of the very first Leisure Times. She helped us dig into our archives and find out more.

You can get this magazine delivered to your mailbox for FREE! All new subscribers from now to the end of the year will be entered to win a prize. We’ll reveal the prize during our 12 Days of Cheer in December. Visit https://35fss.com/leisure-times/ to subscribe or look for subscription forms in FSS facilities.

From the

ARCHIVES

What were we doing in the Leisure Times this month in 1997? Talking about the 50th Anniversary of the Air Force. The Art Contest also had its 50th Anniversary, where Russel Samson took first place with his drawing of the “Tohoku Enlisted Club.” ITT was selling tickets to the Hirosaki Chrysanthemum Festival and the Club had Jazz and Dominoes in their Aomori Lounge on Sunday nights.

The Leisure Times began printing more than 40 years ago and was originally newspaper-style. Later, the magazine was printed on A4 size paper. The inside pages were black and white, with a semi-glossed color cover. Sizing and preference of the magazine was based on materials and budget available, and FSS commander preferences. Printing through the years was sustained through wartime, thousands of policy and personnel changes and the evolution of our FSS facilities to how you know them today.

Spotlight What is your favorite part about working at the Wood Shop at the Arts & Crafts Center? The best part about working in the Wood Shop is seeing how happy the customers are to receive our custom made gifts and awards. Our team at the Arts & Crafts Center puts in a lot of time, effort and creativity to fulfill the needs of the Misawa Air Base community.

What do you wish the Misawa community knew about your programs? Our capabilities at the Wood Shop, hands down. The items that we can make in the Wood Shop are one-of-a-kind handmade creations. When teamed up with our Graphics Shop, we are the best of the best!

What is your best Wood Shop memory? There isn’t any one memory in particular that I would say is my favorite. My memories here in the Wood Shop mostly consist of sharing my love of the skill. I will always treasure watching a new person grow from taking the Wood Safety Class to creating their first finished woodworking piece with our guidance. Leisure TIMES | 29
