I have the privilege to design the Cyprus Rotaract Newsletter for the last 6 months, and with the priceless help of PR Director and dear friend Hannah Mortaga, we managed to continue the tradition that so ingeniously initiated by my amazing fellows & friends Charis Michael & Antigoni Karakouli 2 years ago.

Editorial

I have being working as a Graphic Designer for the last 4 year in Orthodoxou Group of Companies, located in Larnaca, and had the opportunity to work in various industries including Travel, Aviation, Employment, Insurance and more as the Group’s sole in-house designer. Besides my daily job I do some freelance projects and also assisting in the family business enhancing my PR & sales skills at my father’s Atelier. Before entering Rotaract, I tried to create my own community by co-founding a Graphic Design group and later by co-creating a Positive Thinking group. I always had the desire to create my own community but found that I was lacking in leadership and decision making skills. Therefore, I decided one day to look for an already established community that practiced personal and professional development and before I knew it I was a member of the Larnaca-Kition Rotaract Club!

Rotaract Clubs of Nicosia

Nicosia Joint Project: Karaoke Night A joint karaoke night was organized by the three RAC in Nicosia: RAC Nicosia Aspelia, RAC Nicosia and RAC Nicosia Ledra.

The karaoke night took place in Brickyard, which offered us a discounted entrance of 10 euro with unlimited drinks. Raffle tickets of €5 were sold in advance and on the night and all the funds raised will be used

in combination with the funds raised during the Christmas bazaars to buy two pieces of equipment for the pedo-oncology department in Makarios hospital. We are very thankful for our sponsors, who have provided prizes for the raffle and helped us raised a very important amount of funds. A percentage of the income from food orders also contributed to the funds raised. The amount of 1300 euro was raised during the Karaoke night. During the event, members and friends of Rotaract and Rotary, together with Brickyard’s customers sang, danced and had

Rotaract Club Nicosia Aspelia

Ambassador of Romania Visit The Rotaract Nicosia Aspelia general meeting, held on the 11th of February 2014, was devoted to celebrate Romania as part of the Mega-Twinning project which our club is involved to. As a result, we were honoured to host the ambassador of Romania in the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Ion Pascu. The ambassador gave a great speech with regards to the historic bonds between Cyprus and Romania, but also

explained the current good relationship and collaboration between the two countries. During the PowerPoint presentation of the ambassador, we had the opportunity to get to know Romania as a tourist destination.

Finally, a live Skype conference was held between the Nicosia Aspelia club and Rotaract club of Bucharest which helped to build an even more energetic and cosmopolitan atmosphere during the meeting.

In addition, Aspelians organised a Romanian wine tasting accompanied by traditional Romanian food products in order to experience in-depth the Romanian culture.

Rotary Peace Fellow Presentation On the 25th of February 2014, Rotaract Club Nicosia Aspelia had the pleasure to invite Mr Ioannis Marios Sarikas, a Rotary Peace Fellow, to speak about his experience and opportunities on Rotary Peace Fellowship programmes. Rotaract Club of Nicosia

Act for Culture, Act for Rotaract

Rotaract Club Nicosia took part at the ‘Act for Culture, Act for Rotaract’, an international project of Bostanli Rotaract Club, continuing the cooperation between the two clubs, which started 3 years ago. Culture is transmitted through families, language, communities within generations and from one generation to the next. Art and culture contribute to strengthening cultural values, preserving heritage and history, building community and network, enhancing cultural connections among countries. As club we decided to send information for this e-bulletin about Lefkaritika, perhaps the best known Cypriot traditional embroidery. The text sent included how lefkaritika are made and their history in Cyprus.
