Introduction New York City comprises 5 boroughs sitting where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. At its core is Manhattan, a densely populated borough that’s among the world’s major commercial, financial and cultural centers. Its iconic sites include skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and sprawling Central Park. Broadway theater is staged in neon-lit Times Square. It’s no secret that New York is a wellspring of inspiration, with action, romance, and fascinating strangers lurking around every corner. No wonder so many artists, writers, and creatives have flocked here (whether they could afford to eat or not). While there are some disputes on what, exactly, makes a real New Yorker, everyone can agree that the moment you step onto our fair city’s streets, something is stirred within you. New York Finest We are at a pivotal moment in our city’s history, and we must work together. We have the need and the opportunity to make New York safe and fair for everyone, everywhere. NYPD officers—New York City’s Finest—put their lives on the line to keep New York and its citizens safe. Yet most police officers have felt isolated from their own department and from portions of the communities they serve. “If we are to extend the 25 years of dramatic crime reduction achieved by the NYPD, we must invest in training, equipment, and technology for our officers to enhance their effectiveness, improve their morale, and ensure their safety.” William J. Bratton, Police Commissioner, City of New York

In recent years, homelessness in New York City has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In January 2017, there were 62,692 homeless people, including 15,802 homeless families with 23,962 homeless children, sleeping each night in the New York City municipal shelter system.
