Un proyecto nacido en Ámsterdam, escrito en español e inglés, y muy pronto también tendremos nuestra página en francés. Una fuente para el arte, la cultura, la literatura, el estilo de vida, la moda, noticias reales, etc. Un periódico serio, con un guiño hacia los hechos extraños, divertidos de la vida (Europea). El Nacional European Times (NET) quiere ser su reforzador del humor europeo, su guía a lugares desconocidos (culturales y divertidos), su creador de opinión con una sonrisa irónica ...
Nuestros colaboradores provienen de todas partes: de España, Inglaterra, Francia y, por supuesto, de la metrópoli de Ámsterdam, la ciudad más tolerante e inspiradora de Holanda. Vivir en esta ciudad es una bendición. Muchas cosas han cambiado desde que Ámsterdam fuera conocida como “la ciudad mágica del mundo”, sin embargo, ella sigue vivita y coleando con nuestros Rembrants y Van Goghs. cercano, El Azart estará navegando de nuevo a por nuevas aventuras: la expedición de bufones hacia Australia. No obstante, El Azart, de camino a Australia hará una parada previa en el puerto de Conil, donde el capitán y su tripulación tendrán el placer de invitarles a su mundo teatral de bufones. Cuando él camina, podéis oír el tintineo de los cascabeles de sus pulseras desde bien lejos. En su cabeza lleva un gorro de bufón. Sus ropas son coloridas como así su presencia: August Dirks, el capitán del Azart, el barco de los bufones. Su Azart es un excéntrico barco-teatro y una noche de cabaret. Un peque-
ño grupo, fuera del reino común, un mundo donde todo está al revés y boca abajo. “Si no hay estupidez o locura en tu vida, la vida no tiene sentido” sentencia el capitán que se viste con un traje de arlequín asombroso. No dudéis en visitarnos cuando esta alegre compañía nos visite en Conil. Seguro que encontraremos un lugar donde disfrutar, experimentar algo diferente y asombroso. EL ALMA DE ANDALUCÍA Fátima de Alba Para encontrar una tierra tan variada y especial como Andalucía tal vez sea necesario recorrer muchos kilómetros, descubrir otros planetas o esperar a que pasen muchos siglos, se alineen los astros y que vuelva a suceder esta maravilla. Andalucía es una estampa diferente y única: repleta de cultura, de arte, de folclore, de tradiciones, de risas, de lágrimas, de empatía y de simpatía, de encanto y desencanto; de atractivo, de ilusión y de desilusión, de paz y de armonía; de guitarras y de palmas, de castañuelas y de peinetas. De genios como Lorca, Zambrano, Machado, Jurado, Cano y Jiménez, del burrito Platero con su yo y con su tú y él y ella y nosotros y vosotros y ellos. Andalucía con todas sus gentes del singular y con las del plural porque si algo tiene esta tierra es que abre sus puertas para albergar y cobijar a todos los que así lo deseen. Si de alguna otra peculiaridad podemos y debemos presumir los andaluces, aparte de nuestra generosidad y hospitalidad, es de tener esas magníficas puertas que abren a
mundos diferentes: a otros océanos y a otros mares; a otros continentes y a otros países; a otras culturas y a otras perspectivas. Gracias a la apertura de estas puertas, el tránsito de otras civilizaciones y las influencias de las mismas, hacen de Andalucía una tierra única especial y diferente. Ya sea por el clima o por el carácter de su gente, o porque es una de sus grandísimas costumbres, los amigos y las familias se reúnen en las calles para tomar algo y compartir entre ellos un trozo de sus vidas. Y, efectivamente, así fue como me enteré de que este mes de agosto Andalucía se nos presentaba mucho más coqueta, risueña y emocionada de lo normal.

VOLVER A VISITAR UTOPÍA Corrie Verkerk Sí , se puede dormir en una habitación de hotel, visitar un teatro tradicional o una sala de conciertos en un restaurante. Pero en toda Europa , en ciudades emocionantes o en pueblos escondido sencontrará tesoros increíbles a la espera de huéspedes aventureros. El NET será su guía a esos lugares extraordinarios , fuera de lo común : romántico , surrealista , excéntrico y - sobre todo - inspirador . Nuestra primera parada es en el pequeño pueblo de Benalup Casas Viejas - , en las montañas españolas de Andalucía. El nombre lo dice todo : Utopía ... Benalup es un silencioso pueblo andaluz. Es un lugar tranquilo, rodeado de naturaleza. Aquí, Miguel Ángel Fernández -periodista, coleccionista, productor, anticuario y bohemio- creó su propio mundo. Un homenaje a la vida y las artes del 20 al 30 del siglo pasado: Utopía. Es casi imposible describir su pequeño imperio donde el arte, fotografía, noticias, libros, moda, juguetes y objetos se unen en un restaurante, música y teatro. Utopía es un hotel (con sólo 16 habitaciones con temas como “Cabaret”, “Tánger” y “Los poetas”), una réplica del cabaret de París del año 30 y un museo -o más
correcto, una máquina del tiempolleno de objetos y arte de un tiempo pasado. Un laberinto de sentimientos. Fernández, él mismo parece un caballero elegante a quien puedes encontrar en una película en blanco y negro: impecablemente vestido, con su Borsalino casualmente en su cabeza. Debe estar en sus 70 ahora mismo, pero la edad es solamente un número. Sí, los años pasan pero su miente es tan brillante como siempre. Detrás de un vaso de gin-tonic escoge sus palabras cuidadosamente. ‘’No
llamaría a este proyecto solo como hotel o teatro’’. Es un mundo cuidadosamente elaborado donde puedes sentir, como un periódico español escribió una vez, el alma del cubismo parisino, la vanguardia de Bauhaus, los días perdidos de Berlín en la república de Weimar. VIAJERO CON UNA MISIÓN Corrie Verkerk En Somalia Irma Specht visitó a una familia pobre que vendía sus camellos y otras pertenencias para enviar a su hijo mayor a Europa. La probabilidad que el joven tenía de sobrevivir en el viaje en barca hasta Grecia era, ellos lo sabía, del 50%. Pero todo el mundo, incluído el propio hijo, estaban orgullosos de la oportunidad. Si lo conseguía, sus hermanos y hermanas podrían ir a la escuela y la familia dejaría de un poco menos pobre. Mientras hablaba con la familia llegaron las malas noticias. El hijo en el cual habían depositado todas sus esperanzas, se ahogó en el trayecto hacia el nuevo mundo. El viaje en barca le había costado a la familia -padres, tíos y demás- 2.000 euros, y ahora habían perdido a alguien querido. Aquellos que sobreviven envían fotos del nuevo hogar: posando en una gran casa o ante un coche sofisticado, riendo con gafas de sol pi-
jas. El mensaje: “lo estoy haciendo genial, todo está bien”. “Fotos que se muestran a otras familias para estimular el envío de sus hijos al extranjero”, dice Irma Specht. “Por supuesto que lo sabemos. La vida no es un paraíso para los refugiados que llegan. Es horrible. Mira lo que ha pasada en Calais y en cualquier lugar de Europa”. Specht quisiera hacer un documental - o quizás o una película o telenovela - donde hable claramente de la realidad de los refugiados. Ella sólo debe encontrar el dinero para hacerlo. “No será una producción para nuestra empresa occidental, pero se centrará en la audiencia de todos esos países donde la gente ha tenido que huir”. Países pobres con, además, canales de televisión pobres... Entonces, si les entregas una película, ellos la emitirán cientos de veces”.

L A DAMA DE ROJO Corrie Verkerk “No me mientas”. Maureen van der Pligt (1962), ex miembro del consejo del Partido Socialista de Ámsterdam y ahora milita en la unión del sindicato más grande de Holanda FNV, no tiene pelos en la lengua al hablar con sus oponentes. Desde niña ya se preocupaba por las personas necesitadas. Algunos la llaman “Pitbull” por luchar por las injusticias sociales con dientes y garras para intentar resolverlas. “Quiero hacer del mundo un lugar mejor”. Ella se reunió con un director de un asilo para ancianos, quien les dijo a sus empleados que sus horas de trabajo se reducirían a seis horas diarias. “Le pregunté si había contratado más personal pero esto fue, de nuevo, un caso de recortes para el cuidado de los ancianos”. Esos recortes son fuente de preocupación para Maureen van derl Pligt. Y si ella puede hacer algo con respecto a ellos, ella no dudará en hacerlo sin miedo a las autoridades.

Muchas personas que poseen altos cargos no tienen ni idea de lo que le está sucediendo al personal.” Desde pequeña estuve siempre comprometida con los de abajo. Estuve en huelga de hambre cuando oí sobre la hambruna en Bangladesh. “¿Por qué no le mandamos mi comida para ellos?” Le pregunté a mi madre. Pero ella no quería escuchar mis ideas. Mi padre, sin embargo, fue un hombre muy progresivo. Siempre luchó por los derechos de los trabajadores que estaban en juego. Marcus Bakker del CPN (Partido Comunista) fue uno de sus grandes héroes. Maureen fue una niña pertinaz

Lot’s have changed since Amsterdam was known as ‘the magical city of the world’: provo, flowerpower, etc. But still the city is alive and kicking, with our Rembrandts and Van Goghs, our famous (dried) weeds and freedom. On his head he wears a fool’s cap. His clothes are as colorful as his presence: August Dirks, captain of Azart, the Ship of Fools. Last year he and his crew returned, after many years, to Amsterdam. Together with his fools he created a world of imagination on the premises of the old NDSM shipyard where the Azart is floating on the water
of het IJ, in bright blue colors. The Azart is an eccentric theatership and (night)cabaret. A small, out of the ordinary kingdom , a world were everything is ‘upside down’. “If there is no folly in your life, life is meaningless,” according to the captain who, this morning, is dressed in a striking harlequin costume. UTOPIA REVISITED Corrie Verkerk Yes, you can sleep in a normal hotelroom, visit a traditional and/or established theatre, a concerthall of restaurant. But all over Europe, in exciting cities or hidden villages you will find amazing treasures waiting for adventurous guests. The NET will be your guide to those extraordinary places, off the beaten path: romantic, surrealistic, excentric and – above all – inspiring. Our first stop is in de small Spanish village of Benalup Casas-Viejas, in the Spanish mountains of Andalusia. The name says it all: Utopia. Benalup is a quiet Andalusian village. It looks peaceful, surrounded by nature. Here , Miguél Angél Fernandez – journalist, collector, producer, antiquair and bohemien – created his own world. An hommage to the life and arts of the 20th and 30th of the past century: Utopia. It’s nearly impossible to describe his small empire where art, photography, (news)papers, books, fashion, toys and objects join together with a restaurant, music and theatre. Utopia is a hotel (only 16 rooms with themes as ‘Cabaret’, ‘Tanger’ and ‘The Poets’), a replica of a Paris cabaret of the 30th and a museum
– or, more correct, a time machine – full of items and art of a long gone past. A labyrinth of the senses. Fernadez himself looks as one of those well dressed gentlemen who you could meet in an old black and white movie: impeccably dressed, his Borsalino casually on his head. He must be in his seventieth now, but age is only a number. Yes, the years are counting, but his mind is as bright al ever. From behind a glass of gin-tonic he chooses his words carefully. “I wouldn’t call this project just a hotel or a theatre.” It’s a carefully crafted world where you can feel, as a Spa-
nish newspaper once wrote, the soul of the Paris kubists, the avantgarde of Bauhaus, the lost Berlin days of the Weimar Republicar. Who wants to understand Utopia had to understand the life and the passion of it’s creator. Fernandez grew op under the fascist dictatorship of general Franco. TRAVELLER WITH A MISION Corrie Verkerk In Somalia Irna Specht visited a poor family who sold their camels and other belongings to send their oldest son to Europe. The chance that he would survive the boattrip to Greece was, they Knew, fifty fifty. But everyon, including the boy himself, was proud of the opportunity. If he made it his brothers and sisters could visit school and the family would be less poor. While talking to his parents the fatal news arrived. Look what´s happening in Calaisand elsewhere in Europe”. Specht would like to make a documentary - or maybe a movie or a soap - in wich she tells clearly about the reality of (refugee) life. She only has to find the money to do so. “It´s not going to be a big production for our own western market, but it´s focused on viewers in all those countries people fled. Poor countries with also, poor nationals tv-channels... So if you delliver them a movie, they will broadcast it maybe a hundred times.

LADY IN RED Corrie Verkek ‘Don’t bullshit me’. Maureen van der Pligt (1962), ex- member of the Amsterdam council for the Socialist Party and now union officer at the largest trade union of Holland FNV, does not mince words when talking to her opponents. As a child she was already commited to people in need. Some call her a pitbull, who puts her teeth in social evils she wants to solve. ‘I want to make the world a better place.’ She just had a meeting with a director of an elderly home, who told his employees that their working hours would be reduced to six hours a day. “I asked him if he had contracted more staff but it was, again, a case of cuts in the elderly care.” Those cuts are a source of concern for Maureen van der Pligt.
