Welcome It is a joy to be able to give you a warm welcome to the EMW Aberystwyth Conference 2013. The programme is focused around the morning Bible Readings where Alistair Begg will preach from God’s word. These sessions will give everyone an opportunity to go deep into God’s word. Seminars run during the day dealing with key areas of the Christian life, helping equip us to better serve our God. In the evenings we come together again for an opportunity to worship God and hear His word preached. There is also, at the start of each day, an opportunity to join with others to pray. During the Bible Readings children aged six months to 14 years can attend their very own Bible-based sessions. A stream of meetings specifically for those aged 15-25 runs throughout the week and several fellowship meetings for adults give further opportunity for reflection and discussion. There’s also plenty of other things to do during the week. You can visit the Mission Exhibition, enter the sports tournament, support the open air work on the seafront and go on the church history trip. You may just prefer to enjoy the beautiful west Wales coast relaxing with friends, both old and new, and reflecting on all you’ve heard.

Whether you are new to the conference, been many times before or haven’t been for years we trust that you will have a wonderful week and be greatly blessed as we join together to be refreshed by the Word.

We trust that you will have a wonderful week and be greatly blessed as we join together to be refreshed by the Word. Gareth Edwards Conference organiser

SEMINARS Seminars, dealing with key areas of the Christian life and helping to equip us to better serve God, run on Tuesday to Thursday at 2:30pm in Capel y Morfa.

Roger Hitchings retired two years ago after pastoring a church in the East Midlands for 15 years. Before that he worked for 25 years in social welfare. He regularly speaks at conferences and gives seminars on aging issues from a biblical perspective. He has also written extensively on these subjects.

Everyone a giver of care Tuesday, 2:30pm, Roger Hitchings The goal of every Christian is to be more like Jesus, which is why every Christian should be a giver of care. For some people giving care is a whole-life commitment as they support or look after disabled, sick or elderly relatives and loved ones. Carers need to be cared for themselves and the local church should be the most supportive place there could be. This seminar will look at what it means to be a carer and how everyone has a role in being like the Saviour and caring for them. Preaching today Wednesday, 2:30pm, Alistair Begg This seminar, organised by the Preaching Today team, will be led by our main conference speaker, Alistair Begg.

Paul Yeulett was a secondary maths teacher for 13 years before being called to Shrewsbury Evangelical Church where he has been pastor since January 2007. He is married to Ruth and they have three children. He is the author of ‘Jesus and His Enemies’, due to be published by Presbyterian & Reformed Publishing this autumn.

Robert Murray M’Cheyne (1813-43): a short life, long lessons Thursday, 2:30pm, Paul Yeulett This year marks the bicentenary of M’Cheyne’s birth. M’Cheyne’s life and ministry, though short, is packed with timely lessons for today’s church. What stands out is his love and dedication to Jesus Christ; in this he is a model first of all to every Christian minister, but also to every Christian believer.

HISTORY TRIP to Llangeithio Monday 12 August, 10am-4:30pm

Pick up points: Porter’s Lodge (10am) and Aberystwyth pier (10:15am) This year you have the opportunity to visit the village of Llangeithio (just 25 miles south of Aberystwyth) and learn more about its special significance in the spiritual history of Wales. 2013 celebrates the 300th anniversary of Daniel Rowland’s birth – Llangeithio witnessed his powerful ministry during the eighteenthcentury. More recently, this village was the boyhood home of one of the most famous preachers of the last century, Martyn Lloyd-Jones. So why not join us and learn more about the rich spiritual history of this place? For just £13 the history trip offers you a day out which will enrich your knowledge of God’s dealing with His people in the past and give you plenty of opportunity for fellowship with others. You can get on the coach at the Porters’ Lodge on the university campus at 10am or at the pier on the promenade in Aberystwyth town at 10:15am. If you’ve not booked – it’s not too late – call the EMW office on 01656 655886 to book your place. If spaces are still available when the conference begins a final opportunity to book on the trip will be announced at the Sunday services.

Extratime extratime is a series of meetings for 15-25 year olds. The programme is designed to complement the main conference meetings and look at key biblical issues. This is done this with a focus on what it means specifically to 15-25 years olds through a series of seminars each morning and afternoon as well as the extratime late meetings. extratime is not just about formal(ish) meetings, it also provides the opportunity to meet other Christian young people through a number of social events. During the week there's a newcomers' lunch, quiz night, BBQ and the now annual football and netball tournaments. extratime is organised by small group of young people, led by Gareth Davies. See the extratime brochure for full details. Gareth has lived in Cardiff for 12 years having grown up in North Wales. He is one of the church officers at Emmanuel Baptist Church and is married to Jenna. In what little spare time he has Gareth enjoys watching most sports especially football, rugby and NFL.

TIME OUT Time Out is held in Medrus 1, Penbryn from 9:30pm10:30pm after the evening preaching meetings and is led by Glyn and Fflur Ellis. Time Out is a valued part of the conference. These fellowship meetings are designed specifically to help adults come together and reflect on the teaching of the conference and discuss relevant issues with others at the same stage of life. Time Out is for those who are not quite young enough to join the under 25s at extratime, but are still young at heart. Each evening there’s a chance to meet some of the conference speakers, and engage with other Christians in discussions about the challenges that work and/or family life can bring, including: Reflections on Mission in the Local Church Nicola Edkins Work and the Prayer Meeting! Prime Time is another valued part of the conference, helping adults come together for fellowship and reflection on the teaching of the conference, as well as an opportunity to discuss relevant issues with others at the same stage of life. Prime Time is more reflective than Time Out, and aimed at those who are little older. Each evening a topic will be briefly introduced by a guest speaker, and there’s always plenty of time for questions and conversation over a free cup of coffee.

THINGS to DO in and around Aberystwyth The seaside town of Aberystwyth lies on the west coast of Wales at the heart of the wide sweep of Cardigan Bay. This small town nestles between three hills with the promenade facing seaward in a colourful curved terrace of Victorian houses. There are two shingle beaches, a pier, a picturesque harbour and the remains of the late thirteenth-century Aberystwyth Castle. At the end of the promenade are the rugged slopes of Constitution Hill with a zigzag path that climbs the 420 feet to the summit. Up here you can recuperate in a small cafe or visit the Camera Obscura for fine views of Cardigan Bay. For the less energetic there is the option of the Cliff Railway, a fine example of Victorian engineering built in 1896 and still trundling up and down its steep track. Pendinas Hill has visible remains of an iron age hill fort that dates back to c. 600 BC and a fine monument to the Duke of Wellington. The National Library on Penglais Hill holds more than three million printed works, forty thousand manuscripts, and four million deeds, as well as holding works of art, photographs, and audio visual material. In the town you can play bowls, tennis, pitch ’n’ putt or crazy golf. The rugged coastline is popular for all types of water sports and boat trips. You can also go to the cinema, visit Ceredigion Museum or watch a show in the University Arts Centre.

20

Just six miles north of Aberystwyth is Borth with its two mile long golden beach. Keep travelling north and you’ll reach the Dyfi National Nature Reserve which boasts an impressive sand dune system. East of Aberystwyth is the dramatic scenery of the Rheidol Valley which extends several miles inland to Devil’s Bridge. From here, you can follow the Rheidol to its source at Llyn Nant y Moch, a massive reservoir in the shadow of one of mid-Wales’ highest range of mountains. Why not take the cycle route or walk the valley if you are feeling energetic, or, seeing as you’re on holiday, let the train take the strain?

Visit or contact the local tourist information centre (open daily, 10am-5pm) for more details or more ideas to make your stay one to remember: Aberystwyth Tourist Information Centre Terrace Road Aberystwyth SY23 2AG 01970 612125 AberystwythTIC@Ceredigion.gov.uk
