2016 MID-YEAR REPORT
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT // JOHN LUMMUS Since its founding in 2000, the Upstate SC Alliance has consistently strived to market our region to the world and bring business to the Upstate, while advocating that the public and private sectors work together as a strong, focused region. As a team, we have achieved great success, with more than $15 billion in new investment and 50,000 new jobs created over the last 10 years in our region. The Upstate’s industrial growth has come about for numerous reasons, including our workforce, proximity to markets, strong industrial base, our emergence as a center of advanced technologies, and our business friendly environment. But the glue that keeps all of this together is our willingness and ability to collaborate and make these new and expanding businesses successful. The fact that internationally known companies such as BMW, Michelin, ZF, Bosch, GE, and many others have chosen the Upstate, and have prospered and expanded here is one of our best selling points.
Our greatest challenge at the Upstate SC Alliance is to stay on the cutting edge of economic development so we can assure that this success continues in the decades to come. We have embarked on a mission through the Global Cities Initiative to transform our region from a global player to a global leader in the world economy. We feel that globalization is here to stay, and for the Upstate to continue to flourish, we must become even more connected and engaged in the global economy. We will continue to work on this ambitious goal in 2016 and the years to come. I want to thank our public and private sector investors for your constant support of the Upstate SC Alliance. I also want to thank the local economic developers and the South Carolina Department of Commerce for being part of a great team in the Upstate. I commit to you that your Upstate SC Alliance will continue to work hard every day to make our region the best place for business.

MID-YEAR HIGHLIGHTS Growing Investor Engagement. The Alliance has welcomed 20 new investors in 2016, and investor momentum and engagement continue to grow. Investors have enjoyed new networking opportunities such as hockey and basketball games at The Well, welcomed international delegates, and participated in lively Coffee & Conversations. Investors have forged deeper connections during the revival of the Investor Roundtable Club’s small-group setting this spring and through collaborative Export Task Force meetings.

Strengthening Global Competitiveness. In March, the Alliance launched the Regional Foreign Direct Investment Plan, which outlines steps local business, civic, government and economic development leaders can take to increase our global engagement and grow foreign direct investment. On July 21st, more than 250 gathered from four regions to attend the Global South Metro Exchange, an event spearheaded by the Alliance to discuss matters affecting our collective regions’ global competitiveness and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Expanding Recruitment Outreach. The Alliance has shared our message with companies at trade shows and on mission trips to California, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Washington, the District of Columbia, and the United Kingdom. In February, the Alliance hosted a delegation with the Scandinavian Automotive Suppliers Association, and in April, investors joined us in welcoming the director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York. During the first half of 2016, the Alliance promoted and participated in events that serve to support and grow our industrial base, including the 2016 South Carolina Manufacturing Conference and Expo, the BMW Supplier Diversity Conference, the BMW Pro-Am, and the 5 th Annual SC Automotive Summit.
